North Walsham Guide Launched The Official Guide to North Walsham 2021 - 2022 has now been released into the wild.

After the success of the 2019 Town Guide re-boot, this is the difficult "second album" and, despite concerns over the restrictions of the recent covid-19 pandemic, it was decided to 'give it a go' anyway. The result was more than worth it. We 'bucked the trend' and the new guide is even bigger and includes more information and photos than before.

This is a publication for both residents and visitors alike. Not only distributed to every house in North Walsham but many going to local holiday accommodation as a guide for visitors, others further afield as a window on our town and some to local estate agents for new residents and those interested in moving here.

North Walsham Guide Launched

Continued from front cover...

The new guide is more a companion than a replacement to the previous one and includes loads of new photos, 3 beautiful new double spread historical aerial photographs, several prints of paintings of the town, a whole new North Walsham history timeline, a guide to North Walsham in print and updated/ expanded information throughout. Produced and printed locally using Carbon Balanced Paper making this an environmentally responsible publication too.

A free publication of this size and quality has been made possible because of a few key factors. Firstly, our Facebook Archive group with almost 8,000 members built up over 8 years is the ultimate 'hive mind' whose combined, extensive knowledge of the town and its history has been invaluable for research. North Walsham has a great community who have been amazingly helpful. Finally, I am in the privileged position to orchestrate the project with 35 years in the print & design trade, a lifetime living in the town, an extensive local network and my involvement with the North Walsham Archive of which I have been chairman for several years now, taking over from Mike Ling who sadly passed away earlier this year and to whom this edition is dedicated.

Once again the guide is completely free to all residents of the town with copies being distributed to every home in North Walsham. All funded by the generous support of our advertisers. A further 3,000 copies will be available from pick-up points in the town such as the Library, Post Office, Heritage Centre, etc. and surrounding villages. Details will be shared on our Facebook page www.facebook. com/northwalshamguide. Copies are also available via www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk/shop. There is a companion website to the guide at www.northwalshamguide.co.uk where you can view a digital copy of the guide or register for your own, free webpage. Wayne Beauchamp

Aylsham Heritage Centre Reopening

We are really pleased to be able to say that the Heritage Centre will reopen on Wednesday May 19th at 10.30am. It seems like such a long time since we welcomed visitors and we are really looking forward to opening the doors again.

In the first instance the centre will be open Wednesdays and Fridays 10.30 – 3.30. We hope to be able to increase the opening hours and the staffing levels as further restrictions are lifted.

This is a very special year for us as it marks our tenth anniversary!

In those 10 years we have had over 15 exhibitions – each one showcasing a different aspect of the history of this amazing town. We were planning a big new exhibition to mark the occasion, but in the light of the prolonged closures over the last two years, we have decided to keep the current exhibition in place and open our anniversary exhibition next year! This will also give visitors a chance to see the exhibition from last year. This exhibition is called “Now and Then”. It looks at Aylsham through the eyes of two families – one living in the town between 1900 and 1920 and the other living in the town between 2000 and 2020.

It covers a wide range of topics including the pubs which have trading in the town, the schools and shops both families could have used as well as other aspects of the town’s history such as the railways and the wherries and the many royal events which have been celebrated here.

Aylsham during the First World War is also explored. The exhibition looks at the differences each family would have experienced, as well as a surprising number of similarities!

We hope to be able to run some events in the near future, especially our evening and weekend walks.

More details will be announced as we finalise dates. One event that we can announce is another online wine tasting evening on Saturday May 29th at 7pm. The event will take place via zoom and will involve tasting 3 delicious wines from Harper Wells in Norwich, led by Brian Sullivan.

The wines will be delivered to your house in the week before the event along with suggestions for cheese to accompany each one.

The event costs £40 per household so why not make an evening with friends – following all current guidelines of course. Booking is now open via www.aylshamheritage.com www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

A Note from the editor

Where did Spring go, did it happen when I wasn’t looking? As I am writing (bank holiday Monday) the wind is blowing and the rain is beating on the window. Just when we are looking forward to getting out and about as things are opening up, the weather has other ideas. There were still one or two stoic souls eating fish and chips on the beach today determined to enjoy their al fresco dining experience! It is good to see businesses open again and everyone keeping to social distancing. It bodes well for the next phase of the lockdown easing.

All letters must be supplied with name and full address (full address will not be published). Anonymous letters will not be published. Comments, views and opinions in readers letters are not necessarily shared by the editors or the publisher and we reserve the right to edit or not publish.

Dear Editor,

Am I the only resident of North Walsham who is becoming thoroughly annoyed by the continuous road works here, and specifically in Yarmouth Road/Grammar School Road?

Over the last two years or so there have been numerous temporary traffic lights, single lane routing, road closures together with the associated tailbacks. At present (20 May) the situation is compounded by temporary traffic lights in Norwich Road causing tailbacks over the by-pass and into Grammar School Road. The works always appear to be "penny-packet" repairs. Does nobody co-ordinate these things? Surely contractors must apply for permission for these things to somebody? Or are the decisions taken so remotely that the local geography and traffic flows are unknown?

Like many gardeners, I am champing at the bit to get my patch ready for the Summer, the greenhouse is full to bursting just waiting for the risk of frost to pass. Perhaps now is the time to dust off that barbeque and prepare to welcome friends and family back for the gatherings we have all missed so much. Let’s hope for more clement weather in the weeks to come and a return to more normal times. Whatever you plans, enjoy your May magazine.

Keep safe and well.

If I could be sure that it was a solution, I could live with these two roads being closed for several weeks and the entire surface removed with every underlying service renewed, provided that no more work took place for ten years.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Hi everyone. It seems a long time since I was in a position to write an article for North Walsham Times. North Walsham in Bloom have been quietly working away in the background, as have a lot of organisations like us. So, let me start by saying that we were all very upset to find that our lovely barrier baskets outside Spec Savers as well as the tubs in the Market Place had been vandalized on the evening of 17th April. This is all the more upsetting as we have not had any problems of this nature for some time and had started to feel that the people who carried out this sort of mindless vandalism had seen the error of their ways and decided not to spoil our lovely plants just for the sake of it.

on New Road from 10 am. Sorry we will not be able to deliver.

I would also like to make an appeal for helpers. We now have so many beds and areas to care for that we are finding it difficult to get them all covered when needed, especially as our helpers have holidays booked this year which are much needed. Please contact me on 01692 405211 or through our webpage. NorthWalshaminBloom.com.

Let’s hope we can make this summer a lot better than last year, and all get out and enjoy our town.

We will be starting our spring programme on the 27th May when all the summer bedding will be delivered as well as the hanging baskets. As things stand at the moment, we intend to take out all the winter bedding on Tuesday 25th May. It is our intention this year to put as many of the primroses as we can into pots and offer them to anyone who would like to come and collect them for their own use. On the 25th of May the main place for collection of the plants will be outside the Old Council Offices

Air ambulance Trek 24 challenge coming back to Norfolk

This summer East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will be hosting its first large-scale fundraising challenge since August 2019 in the form of Trek 24; an organised 24 kilometre or 24 mile walk along the Norfolk coast.

Two Trek 24 events were planned to take place in 2020 but both were unable to go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Optimistically looking ahead to this summer, EAAA is excited to now be organising three Trek 24 events across the region and bringing Trek 24 back to north Norfolk, finishing at Holkham Hall.

year’s Trek 24 events will each be as successful.

Exact routes will be released in due course, the Trek 24 timetable is as follows:

● Trek 24 Suffolk: Saturday 14 August, finishing at Sotterley Estate.

● Trek 24 Bedfordshire: Saturday 4 September, starting and finishing at Hexton Manor.

● Trek 24 Norfolk: Sunday 12 September, finishing at Holkham Hall.

The life-saving charity has two helicopter emergency teams covering East Anglia and aims to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its service. Trek 24 is a guided 24 km, or 24 mile walk to help raise vital funds to help the charity start flying 24/7, which it hopes to do later this summer.

The very first Trek 24 event took place in 2019 in Norfolk and saw hundreds of walkers setting off from either West Runton or Cley, all finishing at Holkham Hall, and raised over £100,000 for the helicopter emergency medical service charity. The charity is hopeful this

A spokesperson from Holkham Hall said: “Given our rural, and often inaccessible, location we have seen at first hand the incredible, life-saving service that the East Anglian Air Ambulance provides, and we are very keen to show our support by hosting the Trek 24 Norfolk event at Holkham this September. There is no denying that for the participants Trek 24 will be a significant challenge, but we are sure that the beautiful landscapes and sea views along the north Norfolk coast will help them along the route back to the finish line in Holkham Park! We wish all participants the very best of luck and thank them in advance for raising much-needed funds for EAAA.”

Amateur actors step out to boost community theatre funds

A dance class comedy aims to turn on the tap for some much-needed funds for a lockdown-hit North Norfolk theatre.

A late summer season of the musical Stepping

Out has been announced for Sheringham Little Theatre to boost its summer programme, which has been affected by COVID restrictions. The funny, heart-warming and sometimes poignant show follows a group of people thrown together at a weekly tapdancing class, preparing to perform at a charity gala. It delves into their back stories and widely differing characters and charts their dancing “journeys” as they rehearse for the big day. It is being staged by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, which has rallied around to revisit and improve the show it first staged there in 2019. The aim is to get the actors back in action and provide some light-hearted entertainment for Little Theatre regulars and holidaymakers. It will generate income for the community arts hub which has lost months of ticket sales, including its lucrative pantomime and summer seasons.

CSODS chairman Robin Taylor said: “We are desperate to perform on stage again – and we knew the Little Theatre was keen to host live

audiences too, so this is brilliant for both of us. This show is more ‘ready to go’ as some of the cast members have played their roles before – but it will be modified and enhanced, so it will appeal to tourists and locals alike, even if they have seen it before. CSODS have a long-standing link with the Little Theatre, which has done a great job keeping things ticking over and connecting with its audiences during lockdown. We are thrilled to be part of its comeback with a feel-good show, and excited to be part of its summer offer for the first time.”

Rehearsals have already begun – using Zoom and social distancing in gardens – for the two 10-strong casts who will do five shows each during the run from August 27 to September 4.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “This show is a real god-send to us. It provides a fun show in August at a time when it has been difficult to commit to our usual summer season of repertory drama due to Covid and finance restrictions. It is very kind of the CSODS to support us like this.”

Tickets and more information will be available at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Today she stands alone Before the ocean he has crossed, Her heart so far from home Must know such depth To hallow loss. For all the gold and diamonds That have weighed upon her head, She would that her Odysseus Remained with her instead. For what good are a thousand ships To serve a royal throne When no tide can surmount the grief That strands us so alone? Yet after flags are lowered And chapels echo song, Her star will rise to steer by, And the voyage will go on.

Hospital Charity Lottery to launch with £25,000 jackpot

New Funeral Home in North Walsham

We are Gordon & Sally Haynes and we are very pleased to introduce you to our new funeral home. “Gordon Haynes Independent Funeral Services”.

A new weekly lottery which supports the work of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity will be launched this week with the chance to win a weekly £25,000 jackpot.

Having both been brought up in and around North Walsham the Haynes family name is well known locally. Gordon is the son of the late Roy Haynes, long term town and district councillor and also twice appointed North Walsham town mayor. Over the years Roy, along with his wife Audrey by his side, avidly supported local worthy causes including assisting with the Dilham Canal Project and resurrecting the lovely Bluebell Pond. Gordon, has over 30 years experience in the funeral trade having previously been employed ‘Funeral Director’ and ‘Manager’ for Murrell Cork Funerals in North Walsham, whilst Sally has over 10 years experience in funeral administration and customer service.

The Hospitals Charity raises vital funds to support the N&N Hospital, Cromer & District Hospital and the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital. For every £1 entry, at least 50p comes directly to the N&N Hospitals Charity to help us improve the hospital environment, purchase the very latest in state-of-the-art equipment, support staff welfare and provide extra care over and above what is currently provided by the NHS.

When someone joins the hospital lottery a unique six-digit lottery number is allocated. A random winning number is drawn every Friday with the aim to match the winning numbers. To win a prize, those who sign up need to match four, five or six digits of the winning numbers in the correct sequence. Match all six-digits in sequence and the weekly prize jackpot is £25,000 with £1,000 for five matching digits and £25 for four digits.

We would love you to come and meet us and to see our newly refurbished funeral home that includes a chapel of rest, where you can be assured of a private moment to say a fond farewell and goodbye to a loved one. We also have an extensive memorial showroom which you are welcome to look around in an un-hurried atmosphere or to discuss pre-need funeral ideas.

We aim to offer a deeply personal service, to uphold the traditions and time-honoured values with respect and utmost dignity for all. We offer tailor made funeral services, traditional, direct cremations, eco friendly or bespoke to accommodate individual requirements and beliefs of each family.

John Paul Garside, Director of the N&N Hospitals Charity, said, “The funding from the charity lottery will help us to improve patient and staff experience, helping to fund equipment and support staff welfare above and beyond our normal NHS funding. By supporting the lottery, you will help make a difference to your local hospital, its patients and staff.

NNR Needs Volunteers

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Have you got a few days to spare each month? Looking for a new hobby that is engaging and interes ng, with the chance to meet and socialise in a dynamic and fun environment and make new friends? We welcome new volunteers at the North Norfolk Railway. Our services run from April to October with special trains at Christmas. Our Sta ons at Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt have opportuni es to work on the pla orm, mee ng and gree ng customers, buffet and shop and full training will be given.

More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for.

We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin.

When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women. A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity.

Come along and have a cuppa on us in the Sheringham Buffet on the first Saturday of each month between 10 am and 2pm

How does the Laser Facelift Work? A tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. A CO2 laser is then used to ‘shrink wrap’ the skin surface.

Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range a solutions including non-surgical

A warm welcome to our new Day Centre manager

Looking towards June and Step 4 on the Government’s Road Map to recovery… you will see some changes at Age Concern some general maintenance and improvements are currently being undertaken but more importantly we have engaged a new Centre Manager – Anneliese Maerz who joined us in February with excellent qualifications and the experience necessary to support our future needs.

Anneliese Maerz joins us after a career of over 40 years in social work and social care in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors in Northern Ireland, Lincolnshire and Norfolk.

Most recently she worked as the Older People’s Specialist for the Salvation Army covering the East of England. Living in Sheringham for the past 15 years, she is delighted to be able to walk to work and start to meet the older people of this area of Norfolk.

She has a passion for older people and is a great believer in them being ‘fruitful in later life’, never being too old to learn something new. She herself learned to play a brass instrument when she was 50 and regrets not having learned when she was younger.

Air ambulance CEO and founder retires

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has announced that its CEO, Patrick Peal, will be retiring from the charity in June after seven years in the role. EAAA’s Director of Operations Matthew Jones has been appointed as Patrick’s successor and will take the reins at the end of June.

Patrick played an integral part in setting up the life-saving charity just over 20 years ago, led the charity as a former Trustee for some eleven years and has been the charity’s CEO since 2014.

During Patrick Peal’s tenure, the service has expanded to cover 24 hours a day every day of the year. To date, this has involved flying by day and by night, with the middle of the night covered by rapid response vehicles. His final act at EAAA in the summer will be extending the flying service 24/7.

The charity being a cause very close to his heart, Patrick said: “Being CEO of East Anglian Air Ambulance is the best job I’ve ever had, but all good things must come to an end eventually. The charity is approaching an exciting new era of 24/7 helicopter operations and now is the right time for me personally to step back and let someone else lead EAAA into what I’m sure will be a very exciting future.

Patrick continued: “I’m extremely lucky that I’ve been involved with the charity from the very beginning and the transformation I’ve seen in what this charity can do for our patients really is outstanding. EAAA simply wouldn’t exist without the fantastic support of the local community and that is something that I’ve

always been keen to remember and advocate to the rest of the team.

“When I took on the role of CEO seven years ago EAAA was attending about 1,700 missions a year and raising £8 million annually. I’m proud to say both of these areas have significantly increased, by about 60%, with 2,700 missions attended in 2019 and over £14 million raised in the same year. That’s a huge testament to the community that keeps this charity flying and I’m really excited to see how EAAA continues to progress in order to help the East Anglian community even more.”

As part of this year’s campaign officers placed an additional focus on the safety of road users on two wheels by conducting checks in both marked and unmarked vehicles in areas frequently used by motorcyclists and pedal cyclists. Officers engaged with riders in order to educate them on the dangers of not having the correct skills, knowledge and personal protection equipment.

Temporary Chief Inspector Jon Chapman, Head of the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: "We know that as lockdown restrictions ease, road users, particularly cyclists, are more likely to get back out on our roads. It has therefore never been a more important time to highlight the dangers that both motorcyclists and cyclists face. "As we have seen riders being disproportionally involved in serious collisions when they only make up a small fraction of the total road users, we want to use this campaign to encourage motorists and cyclists to think about the safety of those on two wheels.

Mrs Vicar and the Flying Rings

In recent years, flying rings have emerged as a popular alternative to Frisbees for their increased acceleration and have been sold in many shops up and down the coast.

her neck, much of which exacerbated by the scar tissue. She is well fed and undergoing exercises which improve the mobility in her neck.

The work of the volunteers from Friends of Horsey Seals and the RSPCA has meant that Mrs Vicar, and seals like her, are spared the continued injury of their wounds or succumbing to the associated complications.

Due to their lightweight nature and aerodynamic design, these flying rings are frequently lost in higher winds or if thrown with extra force. It is common at the coast for flying rings to be lost into the sea, where they float off or sink, if made from denser materials.

Flying rings are not the only risk to marine mammals or ocean wildlife. Netting, carrier bags (including ‘bags-for-life’) and fishing wire are also items that have to be removed from the necks of injured animals.

Flying rings pose a serious threat to marine mammals. The materials they are made from do not break down or lose their structural integrity over time and in the water.

AND ST STORAGE ORAGE LTD LTD : 01692 016 500 501

A local example is a seal dubbed ‘Mrs Vicar’. Mrs Vicar is an adult seal that the Friends of Horsey Seals had been trying to catch for two and a half years. She had a white flying ring trapped around her neck, mirroring the imagery of the clerical collars worn by vicars.

She will remain at the wildlife centre in East Winch over the coming months while she fully rehabilitates. Mrs Vicar is currently kept in an outside pool, where the salt water granulates and sooths the long term infection around

Seals lack the ability to move their flippers forwards and have no way of removing these themselves. Pups grow at a significant rate, adding up to 30kg of mass in a matter of weeks; with such rapid growth, the seal pup can quickly outgrow the ring they are trapped in, leading to horrific injuries as it cuts into their neck.

Manager Alison Charles, who has cared for Mrs Vicar, said: “They bought her in, and we took her into isolation; the vet then removed what was around her neck, and ensuring [all remnants] were all out. Her wounds were so infected, really deep where the plastic had cut into her neck. You could smell her as you walked into the isolation unit.”

If you find a seal in distress and in need of emergency assistance you can contact any of the following agencies.

If you are heading to the coast, consider bringing alternate items to play with and remember to bring home or dispose of any rubbish as their discarded presence in the sea can cause unexpected and horrific

Seals are inquisitive by nature and will seek to investigate, or play with them as they find them in the sea. Many seals have been discovered by local animal groups (such as Friends of Horsey Seals, British Divers Marine Life Rescue and the RSPCA) with flying rings stuck around their necks.

She was finally rescued by Friends of Horsey Seals during the Easter Weekend and promptly brought to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre, who have been tending to her wounds and rehabilitation. The wounds she had suffered in those years had resulted in deep, bloody cuts and a raging infection which was potentially life threatening.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month at Toll Barn Vets!

May marks the annual Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month – a month where we celebrate and recognise the skills and value veterinary nurses bring to our team and the health and welfare of our patients.

The title Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) can be used by nurses who undertake vigorous practical and theoretical training and examinations to qualify as Veterinary Nurses and be awarded entry onto the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Register. They follow the Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses and once qualified they are required to keep their skills up to date by undertaking Continued Professional Development to ensure we always treat our patients with the most up to date skills and techniques. Several of our RVN’s have undertaken further qualifications in particular areas of interest including Behaviour, Feline Care, Physiotherapy, Exotics and Dentistry.

At Toll Barn Vets we are proud of our skilled team of 9 RVNs who work closely with our veterinary surgeons to ensure your pets receive the best possible care. RVNs use their technical knowledge, hands on expertise and empathy for a whole range of tasks including advising clients on their pets health and welfare both in person and over the phone,

triaging emergency patients, administering life-saving first aid and CPR, blood sampling,

Some of the Nursing team members (l-r) Graham, Lucie (Head Nurse), Ryan & Delphi placing intravenous catheters, performing in house laboratory tests, taking x-rays, dressing wounds, assisting with surgical procedures, monitoring patients during general anaesthesia, preparing patients for surgery, caring for patients after surgery, caring for sick hospitalised inpatients by medicating, wound management, monitoring of key parameters, fluid therapy and very importantly love

and TLC.

The skills and knowledge recognised by the RVN qualification is why at Toll Barn Vets we ONLY allow RVNs to perform our veterinary nurse clinics and to monitor General anaesthetics and anaesthetic recoveries for our patients.

Our RVN’s provide a huge range of clinics to help our patients including Laser Therapy and Physiotherapy to help our pets with arthritis, soft tissue injuries and wound healing, claw clipping, microchipping, Second vaccinations, flea and worming clinics to discuss your pets lifestyle and risk factors and then tailor a parasite program to their specific needs, post operation checks, blood pressure monitoring, diabetes clinics, senior pet checks, puppy and kitten checks, dental checks, 6 month healthchecks for VIP members and nutritional advice.

At Toll Barn Vets we are also an Approved Training Practice allowing us to train future generations of veterinary nurses to our high standards! To find out more about training to become an RVN visit the British Veterinary Nursing Association website.

Redwings Set to Welcome Visitors Again

Redwings Horse Sanctuary has announced the date for the reopening of its two Norfolk visitor centres.

With safety measures in place, the charity looks forward to welcoming visitors back to Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth, and Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, from Friday 30th April.

The centres will open every weekend, Friday to Monday from 10:30am. Paddock walks will close at 3pm, but gift shops and cafes will remain open until 4pm. Supporters will be asked to pre-book tickets for their visits online, but entry remains free.

The centres have been closed since December following a year of disrupted opening due to coronavirus restrictions. The Sanctuary estimates the disruption to its Norfolk centres alone saw them miss out on over £200,000 in fundraising income in 2020 – a blow for the charity which is 100% funded by donations. Debbie Scott, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome our supporters back and see them enjoy spending time with our rescued horses and donkeys again. As well as a major source of

income, our visitor centres are one of the key ways we share our work and build relationships with our supporters. Traditionally, 60% of the new donors we record every year decide to support us because they’ve enjoyed a day out at one of our visitor centres, but this number fell to 10% in 2020. This means we could be counting the cost of closure for years to come.

Redwings Caldecott is home to a herd of more than 30 lovable donkeys and gentle giant Shire cross Fox, as well as a peaceful newly opened Memory Garden. Meanwhile, at Redwings Aylsham you will find Redwings’ own ‘Black Beauty’, rescued Friesian horse Maya, and ‘The Gangsters’ – an adorable gang of miniature Shetland ponies! The site also has dedicated wildlife walks and ponds.

The charity has put in new measures to ensure the safety of their visitors including: • Visitors are asked to book a time slot for their arrival to ensure the number of people at the centres remains at a safe level at all times. • Entry remains free but donations would be welcome towards the care of Redwings’

rescued residents. • There will be one-way routes around the centres to help visitors maintain social distancing. • Cafes and gift shops will be open in line with current Government guidelines. • Visitors are encouraged to visit Redwings’ website for the latest news on the available facilities before travelling.

For those unable to travel to Redwings’ visitor centres they can follow the charity’s social media channels to enjoy daily updates on its rescued residents.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Our branch of Cats Protection was set up in June 2000 but prior to that Stephanie and I had been volunteers at the Dereham Branch. During our time there we met other like-minded people, including one lady who set up an independent charity to rescue stray cats and kittens plus neutering ferals, in the Fakenham area.

We have continued to have contact with her over the years and on occasion we have advised people who live in her area to contact her for help. I was therefore concerned when she contacted me recently asking whether we had taken in a feral mum and her kittens from her area. When I advised her that we had not, she explained that she had agreed to take these into care but when she went to pick them up, was advised that they had already been collected by North Walsham Cats Protection. I reassured her that we had been unaware of these cats but, if we had been we would probably have referred the caller to her as they were in her area.

We are the only branch of Cats Protection in North Norfolk, although there are other branches plus two adoption centres in Norfolk. The Branches are Anglian Coastal, Breckland and Norwich and the Adoption Centres are at Dereham and Downham Market. There are other charities in the post codes we cover, some of which also rescue other animals, and although we do on occasion work with some of them, none are connected to Cats Protection.

Fortunately, during lockdown, we have been able to continue to take in cats and als re-home them. This is mainly due to our cats being in pens in peoples’ gardens. Prospective owners have happily complied with social distancing and the restrictions and procedures that have been necessary when viewing the cats. This has also applied when they return to collect new members to join their households. Similar care has also been needed for visits to the vets for health checks for new cats in care

!!

plus any needing treatment. The vets have all also been extremely helpful by neutering the cats under our special neutering scheme plus feral cats from the two Midnight previously in our care colonies we have recently been helping. Although the situation has eased, we will still need to be careful as volunteers. Although most of us have now been vaccinated we will still proceed with caution to ensure we can continue to care for the cats.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Spring accidents happen

It finally seems as though Spring has sprung after what’s seemed like an endless winter. With the longer days comes more times outdoors for almost all our pets, especially cats. This coincides with the clocks going forward and, in my experience, there seems to be an increase in the number of road traffic accidents (RTA’s) at this time of year as well. In fact, as people and their pets become more active, we seem to get busier at the vets as well!

One such case was Kimi a 3 year old Domestic Shorthaired cat who was hit by a car and subsequently went missing for 2 days before being brought to the surgery. She seemed

quite bright in herself, but her respiration rate was elevated and she was occasionally coughing up blood. Kimi is only small so the impact from a car, even at low speeds can be catastrophic, so it is always wise to take x-rays of any patient that has had an RTA. X-rays of her chest revealed a tear in her diaphragm that had allowed part of her liver to slide into her chest collapsing the lung on the righthand side. This type of injury, known as a diaphragmatic hernia, is relatively common and often life threatening. Fortunately, there were no other breaks or fractures visible and her owners were keen to try everything to

save her. Kimi was stabilised on intra venous fluids and pain relief before surgery was performed the following day. She had torn two thirds of her diaphragm, but her internal organs were not otherwise damaged and surgery to repair her diaphragm was a success. She recovered incredibly quickly and was home with her owners 48hours later and has gone from strength to strength.

We can’t unfortunately teach our cats road sense, but we can slow down in built up areas and be mindful of the cats out there who don’t always look left then right! Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

Art and Artists Unlocked

In a new venture for this year, 102 North Norfolk artists have formed a co-operative in order to open their studios from 29th May to 6th June.

The studios are organised into 15 local trails. Artists taking part in the Sheringham trail are Steven Levitt in Sheringham, Steven Paterson in Beeston, Emily Rose in West Runton and Lesley Mendes in East Runton.

Turnstone by Angie Maddigan

The South of Sheringham trail starts with Joan Sandford-Cook and Sheringham painter Angie Maddigan at Sunset Cottage in West Beckam, where the studios are very well ventilated and there is ample parking. The trail continues with Mo Teeuw in West Beckham, then on to a group of 4 painters: Anna Cloutman, Mirka Mc Neill-Farmer, Pia Henderson and Lesley Ash in a studio between West Beckham and Gresham. And finally, Victoria and Martin Kurrein in Baconsthorpe.

Full details of all the participants and maps of the trails can be found on the website www.northnorfolkstudios.co.uk. Brochures will also be available locally from early May.

The artists are looking forward to sharing with you the work they’ve been busy with during the lockdowns. Original work will be on sale as well as prints and cards. There will be a preview taster exhibition at The Old Workshop Gallery in Corpusty from 15th May.

North Norfolk District Council have kindly supported this venture with a grant from the Norfolk Strategic Fund.

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton

New Not For Profit Law service Launched

The Coronavirus pandemic has given many of us cause to reflect upon the way we work and do business, as well as how we connect with our wider community. Laura van Ree and Trina Worden are two local solicitors who have been doing just that.

290. Mate in two moves

Having risen through the ranks at local law firms, with over 30 years’ experience between them, Laura and Trina have both long reflected on a more philanthropic legal model. The pandemic has prompted them to put these musings into action. The end result: Not for Profit Law.

Through Not for Profit Law Laura and Trina offer their legal expertise at lower rates than traditional law firms, feeding the profits they make back into the local community. To do this they partner with Norfolk Community Foundation, a charitable organisation which has been pivotal in providing support to charities and community groups across Norfolk throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Claire Cullens, CEO of Norfolk Community Foundation, says “Many of the problems we need to tackle in the post-pandemic world have been here for a long time: coping and growing back stronger needs out of the box thinking. Laura and Trina are leading the way with their new business venture”.

The key changes all these mates, checks and non-checks being completely reversed. Difficulty 3.

Laura and Trina advise on Wills, Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection, Probate, Estate Administration and Trusts. They currently offer a Free Probate Advice service for anyone who has lost a loved one, as well as a Free Will Review service. They can offer appointments from offices in Norwich, in your home or online. They both work flexibly, offering evening and weekend appointments where required.

Not for Profit Law is a social enterprise founded by two local solicitors, Laura van Ree and Trina Worden, who have more than 30 years’ experience between them. Prompted by their experiences of the Covid19 pandemic, Laura and Trina have resolved to ‘do law differently’. Through Not for Profit Law they offer expert legal advice at lower rates than tradi onal law firms, partnering with Norfolk Community Founda on to feed the profits they make back into the local community.

FREE WILL REVIEW (valid un l November 2021)

Changes in the law and tax system can mean that a will made just a few years ago might not perform as you expect. Laura and Trina will happily look at your will and make sugges ons about poten al changes that might benefit you. It may be that you don’t need to do anything, but it is certainly worth checking!

FREE PROBATE ADVICE

There can be a lot to think about when someone dies, at what is almost certainly an emo onal me. For that reason, Laura and Trina offer a free ini al probate advice service to anyone who has lost a loved one or is dealing with an estate. Also advising on Powers of A orney, Court of Protec on and Trusts.

We aim to be fl fle exible, off ffe ering meetings online, in offi ffic ces in Norwich or at your home. Evening and weekend appointments are available on request www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Bill Brandt | Henry Moore Exhibition Reopens 18 May – 22 August 2021

This major exhibition traces the parallel and intersecting careers of two leading artists of the 20th century. The photographer Bill Brandt (1904–1983) and sculptor Henry Moore (1898–1986) first crossed paths during the Second World War, when they created images of civilians sheltering in the London Underground during the Blitz. These photographs by Brandt and drawings by Moore today rank among their most iconic works.

The exhibition is organised by the Yale Center for British Art in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield and is curated by Martina Droth, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Yale Center for British Art. The exhibition brings together almost 200 works including significant sculpture, iconic photographs and drawings, little-known photo collages and rare original colour transparencies. Bill Brandt | Henry Moore reveals the interdisciplinary range of these two artists, exploring how they both responded creatively to the British landscape and communities during the turbulent times in which they lived.

The exhibition opens with the moment the artists met in 1942 when Brandt photographed Moore in his studio to accompany a 10-page spread in Lilliput magazine, which juxtaposed the two artists’ shelter images for the first time. Both artists were often drawn to similar

subjects. During the Second World War, there was a focus on ordinary people, the home and labour. Their images of coal miners and their families reflect social deprivation, yet an optimistic view in the case of Moore.

In contrast with the densely populated, often claustrophobic, urban subjects explored during the war, Brandt and Moore both later turned to nature and the light-filled open landscape as a primary source of inspiration.

A significant section of the exhibition looks at their enduring interest in rock formations, geological artefacts, and megalithic sites, such as Stonehenge.

Ghislaine Wood, Acting Director of the Sainsbury Centre said: “Henry Moore is a

crucial artist in our collection, and we are delighted to be able to show his work in a new light through its presentation alongside Bill Brandt, one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. This exhibition demonstrates how Henry Moore, often known as a sculptor, worked across media, including collage and photography, and how Brandt — through photography — presented the landscape and body as acutely sculptural.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a major new book published by the Yale Center for British Art in association with Yale University Press. The book takes an unusual approach to the reproduction of photographic works, capturing the materiality of the print as a singular, three-dimensional object rather than a flattened image on the page.

Bill Brandt | Henry Moore reopens at the Sainsbury Centre 18 May – 22 August 2021. Dates at the Yale Center for British Art have been postponed until further notice. Tickets £13/£12 concessions.

Building a Granny Annexe

by Charlotte Bentley, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + Storr

If you are thinking about building an annexe for an elderly parent or other family members, you will need to have the necessary planning consents in place before you start work. If not, the local planning authority could require you to remove the dwelling and return your home to its original state. Being unable to show the requisite consents may also cause problems when you come to sell your home. Planning permission, do you need it?

The good news is that depending on what you want to build, and where you live, you are allowed certain building works without having to make a planning application. Permitted development rights allow the improvement or extension of a home without the need to apply for planning permission, where that would be out of proportion with the impact of the works carried out.

However, a separate self-contained building in your garden is likely to need an application for full planning permission. A home extension, which satisfies other conditions relating to height and physical layout, may not.

If you’re unsure whether planning

permission is required, you can apply for a certificate of lawful development. This can give you peace of mind that your proposals are lawful from a planning perspective.

What other consents will you need?

There may be restrictions in your title deeds which mean that any building works require the consent of an adjoining landowner, or another third party. If your home is a leasehold property, then it’s likely you will need consent from your landlord for any structural alterations. If your home is subject to a mortgage, you may need your lender’s consent too.

What about stamp duty land tax?

Building an annexe should not ordinarily give rise to any liability for stamp duty land tax. However, stamp duty land tax will apply on any future sale of your property, affecting how attractive your home is to would-be buyers. What about finance and ownership?

If you are combining finances with other family members, you should all be clear about the arrangement. Ensure there is a written agreement which reflects your true intentions. This should take account of your

relative contributions and what could happen in the future. For example, what legal interest, if any, will your parent have in your shared home?

Joint ownership as tenants in common may seem like the obvious and fairest choice, because it would allow each of you to have a fixed share, reflecting your different contributions. However, if your parent dies, their share in the property will pass as per instructions left in their will if they have one, or according to the rules of intestacy. You could then find yourself sharing ownership of your home with their beneficiary, which may not be what you had in mind at all.

For further information about extending your home to share with relatives, contact Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959 and ask to speak to someone in the property department.

Your legal matters in safe hands for generations Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

Busy busy busy

For those of you walking up Overstrand Road, you may have noticed a new sight appearing this year. Giant tipis situated on the North Lawn of The Grove were erected in November and since then, we, at The Grove, have been busy building the adjoining kitchen and bar, landscaping and getting ready to open Sundown, our new seasonal restaurant serving Norfolk tapas, pizza and ice-cream.

two-rosette meal from our a la carte restaurant.

So if you are feeling hungry and fancy a treat, you can book either the main restaurant, an afternoon tea or table at Sundown via our website. Or if you fancy a nosey, come and say hello, however busy we are, we are never too busy to talk. 01263 512412

The tapas menu includes, Wells cockles, grilled prawns with oyster sauce, BBQ artichoke, Norfolk samphire, and of course, fresh Cromer crab. Have I got you salivating yet?

The pizzas include John’s Escape – which is virtually all garden produce, The Gangway, which is crab, anchovies, prawns, and Gressingham Special, which is Hoisin duck. How about now?

But that is not all that’s been happening. This year, we have also revamped our afternoon teas, built a terrace on the Conker Lawn keeping those in mind who like to sit outside and enjoy an afternoon tea or

Sultana Tea Loaf

This tea loaf is very easy a good keeper and freezes well, just the thing to have in reserve for unexpected guests. It is moist and delicious spread with a little butter. You need to plan ahead as the fruit is soaked overnight prior to baking.

Ingredients 250g/9oz sultanas 100g/4oz candied mixed peel 140g/5oz light muscovado sugar 300ml/1/2pt hot black tea made with 2 teabags (Earl Grey is good) Butter for greasing 300g/11oz self-raising flour 1 egg, beaten

Method Put all the dried fruit and the sugar in a large bowl and pour over the hot tea, stir well, cover and leave overnight to soak. The next day, heat the oven to 150C/gas2 and lightly grease a 2lb loaf tin and line with baking parchment. Stir the flour and egg into the fruit mixture until well combined and there are no pockets of flour. Pour into the lined loaf tin and level the mixture. Bake for 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 hours until well risen and a skewer inserted into the middle comes away clean. Cool for 10mins in the tin then turn out onto a cooling rack. When cool, enjoy with a cup of tea. Eat Cake for Veg’s Sake!

Here’s a great way to enjoy a fabulously delicious cake and pretend to be a bit healthy at the same time! Carrot cake sounds like a contradiction in terms, but the addition of vegetables into cakes has been going on since time immemorial, and if your kids won’t eat veg this may be a really sneaky and great way to get some into them! On a serious note, it’s also a terrific way to achieve a really moist cake, and one that is a good keeper too. I have always found carrot cakes to be a bit too oily for me, as the recipe usually calls for oil rather than butter, so I devised my own to get around this. The result is a really moist and scrumptious cake, which I don’t tend to ice as I don’t think it needs it, but you could if you wanted to. You can’t really go wrong with this recipe; I make mine in a 2lb loaf tin for ease of slicing, and it’s best if you make it a day ahead of eating (if you can bear to wait that long).

3 eggs whisked with 3 tblsp milk 6 oz Grated Carrot 4 oz sultanas or raisins

Cream together butter, sugar and almond essence until pale and light.

Sift together all dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

Slowly add a little egg and a tablespoon of flour mix to the creamed butter mixture, beating well to avoid curdling (if this happens just add a little more of the flour mix and keep beating)

bake in the oven on 180° for approx 35 – 40 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Rest in tin for 10 mins, and then turn out onto a wire cooling rack.

Once all the egg and flour has been thoroughly mixed together, stir in the grated zest, carrot and finally the sultanas.

Pour into a greased and lined 2lb loaf tin and

Keeps in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Carolyn Burn

The Natural World we are gardening in…

Hello everybody, how is your garden growing in the present climate? This month I just want you to think about the Weather - Climate Insects and growing in this increasingly topsy turvey climate we are experiencing. I want to also show you how I have got a head start on certain things as well.

Where have all the April showers gone? Not only has it been the driest April but one on record, it has and still remains the coldest April since 1980s. So, what is it with the weather?

Last year in May, I was in a drought and watering like mad. It seems likely to be the same, although rain is forecast over this Bank Holiday weekend as I write this article. We now need to become Savvy Gardeners with a bit more insight and intuition.

So how do I water correctly and use the water efficiently? The soil is like a sponge and can act as a reservoir for water, also different soil types hold the water better than others. So, we need to understand that soil will either hold moisture, or it will evaporate or drain straight through. The other issue is how water will run off if we have these increasingly heavy showers. Here are some ways we can help to achieve this.

1. Water in the late afternoon or evening if possible and check with a trowel how deeply the water has penetrated the soil. By watering later in the day, you are not losing water to evaporation through the sun or wind.

2. Target the water at the soil directly below the plant and not on the foliage, it will stop the evaporation from the leaves. It will also stop the plant being scorched by the water droplets on the plant acting as a magnifier of the sun.

3. Avoid water running off, draining through the soil and evaporating by putting down mulches of good compost, grass cuttings on top of paper and cardboard or straw. This will help keep the soil moist.

4. If your soil is light and sandy then you need to improve the body of the soil by putting into it organic matter or manure or indeed place it on the top and let the worms pull it into the soil.

I have noticed that many people are sowing and raising plants too early and garden centres have bedding plants in very early. This is fine if you have a greenhouse - cold frame to bring them on and harden them off. However, many people don't have that and lose the plants to the frost or cold winds. I have potatoes in bags in the green house now coming into flower and strawberry plants in flower which hopefully, I will be picking near the end of the month. I have also grown my first early peas in guttering and have now put them outside on the allotment.

However, and this is the important point, until we lose the frosts and cold evenings, together with the cold winds nothing is going to grow. So don't go rash, there is still lots of time and plants will catch up.

Now is the time to start courgettes, pumpkins, squashes, runner beans, peas, sweetcorn and hopefully by the time they have grown big

enough to plant out in the case of the squash and runner beans they will have much warmer nights and a consistent day time temperature.

Some planting can benefit others if they are grown together, this is known as companion planting. It works in various ways: -

Attracting beneficial insects, grow flowers that attract pest -eating insects alongside your vegetables. This should cut down on pests such as aphids and caterpillars.

By growing strong scented vegetables / flowers such as onions, garlic or marigolds around carrots they will mask the smell of the carrots and confuse the carrot fly that can smell carrots up to a mile away, marigolds will help with dealing with whitefly in the greenhouse.

Intercropping growing fastmaturing crops in between longer-term crops keep the ground covered so fewer weeds grow and makes the most of limited space. The most famous is the three sisters, sweetcorn, pumpkins or squashes and climbing beans. The corn supports the beans, the squashes suppress the weeds, and the beans take up nitrogen from the air.

That is all for this month happy gardening. Chris Wright

Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust Update

Spring - a time of green shoots and looking ahead... we are certainly looking ahead, and see some promising green shoots of a sailing season! A wherry trip would be something to look forward to and both day trips and private charters are on offer from 1st June to 30th September. Naturally there is a degree of caution attached, and as we are all aware restrictions may change. But for now let's think positively! Wherry Yacht Charter volunteers are busy making sure our two pleasure wherries, Hathor and Ardea, as well as our wherry yachts Norada and White Moth are ready for a busy sailing season, Olive is currently out of the water on our slipway for essential restoration and maintenance.

Our scheduled public day trips have already been offered to our Friends for early bird booking, so some spaces are already booked, but there are plenty of spaces left. We usually carry up to 12 passengers but for the time being we will confirm bookings for up to 6 passengers per trip, and add others to a reserve list in the hope that restrictions will allow us to accept more people safely on board by the time of sailing. Payment will be requested nearer the date of the trip. If a booked sailing or charter has to be cancelled due to Covid-19 or changes to the relevant guidance on social and leisure activities, we will offer a full refund or postponement to a future date.

Our skippered Day or Overnight Charters give you exclusive use of a wherry yacht. Dates may be requested from 1st June 2021 onwards. Charter groups must be formed to comply with the relevant rules on group numbers and household mixing at the time of sailing.

Our historic boats provide a perfect way to get together with family or friends while enjoying peaceful sailing on the Broads. All enquiries for charters and day trips should be addressed to bookings@wherryyachtcharter.org.

All income from our sailings goes to keeping our beautiful wherries on the water for all to enjoy.

As a charity we rely on volunteers to achieve our aims, and we welcome assistance in all

areas. Becoming actively involved with WYCCT is a fantastic way to learn more about the wherries, meet other supporters, brush up old skills or learn new ones. No matter how experienced (or inexperienced) our volunteers are with other boats, sailing a wherry is rather different. This is why we ask all crew volunteers to go through a staged training programme. How quickly you progress to full sailing crew depends on how quickly you learn the ‘wherry ways’. And if crewing turns out not to be for you, then there are definitely other ways you can get involved. We have roles to suit various strengths and abilities, and whether you work behind the scenes or share your enthusiasm with the public at our events, you're part of the team that helps to keep our fleet sailing and bring in much-needed support. We positively welcome young volunteers, but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult both during training and while volunteering. We do ask that, for insurance purposes, all volunteers should be current members of the Friends of WYCCT.

If you are interested in any of our sailings from June to September, or to volunteer please see our website www.wherryyachtcharter.org. You can also find us on Twitter - @WYCCT, Facebook - Wherry Yacht Charter and Instagram - @wycctnorfolk.

North East Norfolk Conservation Volunteers

During these unprecedented lock down times, we have all been made very aware how much local nature reserves, walks around the lanes, canals, woods, heaths and local beaches have meant to us. All of these habitats do not look after themselves and all require protection and intervention at various stages of their existence.

I’d like to share with you some of the work local conservation volunteers (North East Norfolk Conservation Volunteers) were able to do pre and post lock down (all Covid compliant of course)

We work in conjunction with other local interested groups including the District Council, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Parish Councils and individuals, on a variety of habitats including Pigneys Wood, East Ruston Poor Allotments, Bradfield Commons, Bryant’s Heath, and the Weavers Way including Honing Station and bridge and Felmingham Station and cutting.

Recently we enjoyed a nature ramble around Pigneys and managed to spot, with the help of a brilliant local naturalist, some 33 different species of bird (sadly not the resident kingfishers) plus butterflies, insects, deer, evidence of otters and badgers, plus the emergence of many varieties of spring wildflowers.

Obviously, this is testament to the ongoing

care and attention provided by NWT and volunteers. It is also fair to say that it, together with the canal walk, has come under intensive use over the past year and this has caused the occasional conflict of interests, but we must all remember that this is first and foremost a nature reserve. That tops everything.

That week was something of a treat – it’s usually much harder work coppicing, cutting gorse, raking the meadows, planting trees and last week was no exception as a litter pick along Hall Lane leading up to Pigneys was on the agenda for our morning and afternoon groups. Well, photographic evidence provided just shows what has been thrown out of passing cars since the last pick about 2 years ago. On the surface it seemed to be reasonably clear but just under the surface of the newly emerging spring vegetation and snagged in the brambles it was a very different case. We collected around 20 bags of rubbish and recycling along a ¾ mile stretch of supposedly quiet lane including garden rubbish and large plastic pots, a parasol frame, takeaway food cartons and packaging, many bags of plastic bottles, general plastic litter and much to our amazement somewhere around 25 empty vodka bottles! Beside causing a hazard to small mammals…. what about the drink/driving implications for humans?

In Pigneys itself someone had clearly enjoyed a picnic but really is it necessary to put your

empty wine bottles into the bushes? Enjoy your picnic, take your litter home! Pigneys is equipped with litter bins for both general rubbish and dog poo in the car park so please use them, if they’re full take the litter away with you.

Please think about your behaviour in the countryside, really enjoy it but please don’t throw your litter out of the car window or dump your household rubbish and expect that someone else will clear it up. Most of all don’t drink and drive. Conservation volunteers would much rather be spending their time helping to create a better environment for both human and wildlife to thrive.

Horticultural enthusiasts invited to return to Creake Abbey’s 2021 Plant Lovers’ Day

Creake Abbey’s highly popular Plant Lovers’ Day returns on Saturday 29th May 2021 to this beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk. The region’s budding gardeners are invited to enjoy the botanical delights on sale at this much-loved horticultural event, now in its 14th year.

For Creake Abbey’s Plant Lovers’ Day 2021, 30 specialist plant nurseries from across East Anglia and beyond will showcase their finest perennials, exotics, bulbs, shrubs, trees and climbers.

From olive trees, bamboo and grasses to carnivorous plants, roses and wildflowers, the buzz of excitement is palpable as visitors find an unusual specimen or something irresistible for their garden or as a gift for a loved-one.

Nurserymen are always happy to answer questions and to provide advice on a wide range of high-quality plants, sold at reasonable prices.

Once again, proceeds from the day will go to Wells Community Hospital Trust at Wells-next-the-Sea. Over the past 14 years Creake Abbey has raised over £25,000 for the hospital through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent donations.

The hospital has been providing health and wellbeing services in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics, the hospital is spearheading services for the community including a digital hub, community café, parents and toddler groups as well as a program of exercise classes. Registered charity no. 1154540

Strict Covid-safety measurements will be in place to ensure visitors and stall holders feel safe. There will be a simple one-way system in place, visitor numbers will be monitored within the event area and, as needed, a queue may form at the entrance.

Ordering from the nurseries in advance is welcomed and contact details for all the nurseries will be available from

www.creakeabbey.co.uk/events/plant-lovers-day

Visitors are encouraged to spread their visit across the whole day and not arrive at the peak time of 11am to 12noon.

Masks are to be worn at all times and visitors should respect social distancing rules across the venue’s outdoor location on the breezy north Norfolk coast.

The café and food hall will be serving takeaway coffee, cake and light meals. If restrictions allow, then there will be some indoor seating.

A paramedic will be in attendance.

Competitive rugby returned to Scottow Park on 1st May, the Vikings hosting Holt in a friendly. Covid meant law changes on the field and social restrictions off it. Free kicks replaced scrums and mauls, whilst spectators booked in advance and wore masks whilst sitting at tables of six in a beer garden. The Vikings used 36 players in a match played in quarters of twenty minutes. Amongst the many newcomers were some who began their rugby careers as Minis at Scottow: Charlie and Joe Hawkins (re - joining from Crusaders), Henry Dewing was back after five seasons in London and Harry Agnew, who has played in the Championship. Coach Ryan Oakes was pleased with what he saw delivered on the pitch commenting, “it was important to get everyone back into the game: new players, old

players, returning injured players and maturing colts.” After a return fixture at Holt on the 8th, the Vikings travel to Shelford this Saturday (15th).

There has been plenty of action across the rest of the Club too. The Youth, Minis & Valkyries are back on Sunday mornings having re-started on 11 April, whilst lockdown was lifted just in time for the Easter Holiday Camps to be held with what are thought to be a record number of nearly 200 attending. Elsewhere four players who came through the Youth system at North Walsham George Loose, Callum Richardson, Cameron Photo by Hywel Jones Tasker and Kip Horton - were included in Leicester Tigers Academy squad for the Premiership Academy competition. The North Walsham Community Shop have been helping the North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club by providing them with a new training clock. This will benefit every swimmer who attends club training at the Victory now that they are back. The advantage of this clock is it will be portable, meaning it can be placed anywhere in the pool to benefit the different squads starting at different ends in addition to the permanent clock already fixed. At the handover of the clock, Annie Abbs and Veronica Cooke, trustees of the Community Shop said: We are really pleased to provide this training clock which will help the Viking swimmers. Our funds come entirely from the sale of public donations and this is just the sort of project that our volunteer-run charity exists to help” Club Captain, sixteen your old Katy Coleman from Mundesley replied with “On behalf of all the swimmers, I just wanted to simply say 'thank you' to the Community Shop for the clock. This will be a great advantage to us all in our training for which we are all truly grateful." as she received the clock from on behalf of the Vikings.

Each Needs Volunteers

We need YOU to help us keep our shops open and raise vital funds!

With many of our shop volunteers currently unable to lend a hand due to the pandemic, the number of hours’ support we normally receive is down more than 50%.

We are facing a financial deficit over the next 12 months, following disruption to fundraising and retail, and at the same time our care and support is more important than ever as vulnerable families become exhausted from shielding.

Might you be able to help? Just a couple of hours a week can make a difference.

There are so many ways you can support us, from sorting donations and dressing windows to running the till and listing items on our eBay shop, and we always guarantee a friendly welcome!

Why not pop in to your local EACH shop – we have 43 right across the region – chat to our team and arrange a taster session? Find out more about becoming a retail volunteer, including a full list of our shop locations and phone numbers, at www.each.org.uk/retail-volunteers.
