We are looking for volunteers to apply for the following roles in North Walsham
North Walsham & District Community Archive 2022 Calendar Continued from front cover...
Versus Arthritis Support Group Leader: Group lead Volunteers are the main point of contact at Versus Arthritis groups. Working with Group Support Volunteers and responsible for organizing and promoting group activities for people with arthritis. This is a rewarding role whilst creating a supportive environment for local people with arthritis.
Sadly the archive's founder and our original chairman, Mike Ling, passed away earlier this year. His private collection went to auction with Horner's Auctioneers in Acle and we were fortunate enough to win a few lots. Many of the great photos from the lots we didn't win have subsequently turned up on eBay and we have been doing our best to win these and keep them in North Walsham which has proved quite an expensive pursuit. That said, it is the money made from past projects, such as our calendars, which have enabled us to buy this wonderful record of the town's history for future generations to enjoy. We have included several of these new additions in the 2022 calendar. Many of these images printed to full A4 size so all their wonderful detail can be fully enjoyed.
Versus Arthritis Group Support Volunteers: to support and assist Lead Volunteers in facilitating support group meetings and activities.
For more details and how to apply please contact Chris Preston Local Coordinator tel: 07834418472 email: c.preston@versusarthritis.org
The Friends of Friesenried North Walsham Town Twinning
North Walsham & District Community Archive has always endeavoured to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, to keep it safe for future generations and to make it available to the public.
We have bitten the bullet, as you say, and have progressed a few more steps towards normality. We held a coffee morning in the town late September and learned that we were the first for nearly two years. It was fairly well supported, and our funds were boosted by a modest sum. Thank you to all who came along. On 1st October we braved our first face to face A.G.M. for two years and it was gratifying to see the many members there showing their support. The committee all stood down, were all then nominated, duly voted back into post so nothing new there. As I have mentioned before. 2021 is our fortieth anniversary year and the two members who joined in the beginning and are still here were honoured with a certificate of recognition for their continuing support. In the photo the chairman Steve Wolstenholme is presenting Mollie Whitworth and Colin Watson with their certificates.
Our beautiful calendar has become a firm favourite with those who grew up in the town and remember ‘the good old days’, newcomers to the town interested in its history and to those lucky enough to grow up here but who now live further away (copies are sent all over the world via our website). The calendar is as collectible as it is practical.
Calendars are available from North Walsham shops; C. D. Page (ie. Colin's Sweetshop), Swallows Coffee Shop, Express Printing & Stationery, The Community Shop, The Heritage Centre and Penney's Flowers & Crafts. None of these businesses make any profits but sell our calendar to support the group and its projects.
The calendars are also available via our website at www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk for those further afield.
The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running over 14 years now, managed by a hard working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, local photographs and the area. Our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive has been running for 8 years and is as active as ever with well over 8,000 members! It’s free and easy to join, and you will be able to view thousands of photos from the history of the town and discuss those photos and memories with other members.
Our next event is a dinner for Christmas being organised for late November.
As ever, you are invited to come along, meet the members, have some fun all without any obligation. Steve 01953 607119 Dianne 01962 402726.
Thank you for your support.

A Note from the editor
It is said that over 50% of older people in the UK say that the television is their main source of company
November already... really?! The clocks have gone back and I suppose we are on the run-up to Christmas.
Here at the Age Concern North Norfolk day centre, we do not have time for the television as we are too busy with activities and enjoying our time together.
With talk of shortages of this and that, let alone rising winter fuel bills, you could be forgiven for thinking we are in for a bleak winter. But wait a minute, maybe it’s time to have a bit of a reset and think about those simple pleasures we enjoyed before everything got so complicated.
Over the past couple of months, we have done biscuit decorating, flower arranging, making lavender bags, seated exercises and music and singing. In addition there are quizzes, word searches, games and puzzles with the aim of stimulating all the senses throughout the day. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy has proved very beneficial for people with cognitive deficits as it can engage people in very simple and straightforward ways and is effective when a variety of sensory stimuli are combined within the activity.
Making the Christmas cake and puddings in November to be fed and matured for the big day. Making decorations with the children (and memories at the same time). Crisp walks wrapped up in scarves and gloves and then home to a mug of hot chocolate. Who needs the latest toy or gadget? If Covid has taught us anything, it is to look at what really matters to us and our loved ones and that getting back to basics is not such a bad thing.
So, get planning those homemade treats for Christmas, make some presents for loved ones instead of chasing the latest must-have, make some memories – they last longer than anything you can buy.
Whatever you are planning, enjoy your November magazine.
Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor

Exercise to music with scarves was a physical activity structured by a trained leader to enable all participants to move different parts of their body to music as they were able to safely. The light-weight scarves contributed positively as movement was required to wave them around so that people moved their limbs more than normal. Watching others also impacted on their enjoyment and motivation and there was scope to discuss the different colours. People living with dementia are more likely to achieve their potential by doing rather than by sitting passively and watching.
There are still places available, particularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays – phone 01263 821188 to book your Half Price Taster Day.

Why you should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney this November
At Clapham & Collinge Solicitors, we’re running our ‘Charity Lasting Powers of Attorney Scheme’ throughout November, where we are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney. In addition to this discount, we will also make a £50.00 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 5 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities for this year’s scheme are The Benjamin Foundation, Norfolk and Waveney Mind, Big C, Norfolk Community Foundation and Sheringham Little Theatre.
Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them.
If you lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that enables people you choose to have legal authority to make certain decisions for you, if you become unable to make them yourself. The person who is given this
What happens if you don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf; • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order; • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself.
authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney:
Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank or building society accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and if necessary, selling your home. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it can be used immediately, or held in readiness until required.
Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney: This gives your attorney the power to make decisions about your daily routine, medical care, moving into a care home and lifesustaining medical treatment. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.
In relation to the cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney, this will depend on whether you wish to have both a Lasting Power of Attorney (Property and Financial Affairs) and/or a Lasting Power of Attorney (Health and Welfare) prepared and registered.
All appointments must be booked by Tuesday 30th November and must take place by Monday 31st January 2022. To claim your discount and book your Lasting Power of Attorney appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Local charities to benefit from Artisan Fair!
The Two Rivers’ Artists are a group of 7 talented people who live between the rivers Ant and Bure on the Broads. The group are renowned for their traditional skills and handcrafted work.
Each November, the group holds a Festive Fair in Neatishead, and invite two local charities to join them. This year they’ll also be joined by five hand-picked, exceptional Norfolk artisans. Last year due to covid, it was a virtual event, and the artists were delighted to achieve 2,500 website hits which brought many sales. Now, lockdown has led to new designs, new ideas and new inspiration from this talented group, many of who have gone in new directions and added new designs.
Saturday November 20th at the New Victory Hall, Neatishead NR12 8AD 10am to 3pm. www.tworiversarts.co.uk
This year’s event, to be held on Saturday November 20th, at the Neatishead New Victory Hall, will see the Nancy Oldfield Trust join them. The Trust are based in Neatishead and provide opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people, families and carers, to enjoy a boating experience under motor, sail or paddle on the Broads. Also joining the Fair will be the Friends of Neatishead School with their spectacular refreshments and cakes, so people visiting the event can enjoy a chat and a break with friends while soaking up the vibrant, artistic atmosphere.
The 7 Two Rivers Artists are: James Arthur, photographer. Kit Calladine, printmaker. Fiona Johnson, silver smith. Fran Tubbs, photographer. Paul Williams, artisan woodworker. Jacky Witton, bespoke metalwork and sculpture; and Bob Payne, oil on canvas. They will be joined by: Sue Andrews, basket maker. Trisha Francis, ceramics. Keith Nash, water colours around Norfolk. Neil Gladwell, the traditional rope company; and Ros Wilson, woven tapestry. Do come along and join the artists and help support their chosen charities on Saturday the 20th of November, at the New Victory Hall, Neatishead NR12 8AD, from 10 to 3.
Keep the date!

Exhibition at Thorpe Market Church
The last eighteen months have not been easy for anyone but one of the positive outcomes has been the increase in the number of people making things. Some have redesigned and replanted gardens, some have taken to writing stories, and some have rediscovered the joy of traditional crafts. Amongst the makers has been Rachel who has found time in a very successful final year at Lincoln University (working from home) to develop her crocheting skills and her design work to produce a wide range of items from small earrings to blankets, waistcoats and cardigans using cotton, wool or acrylic. Many are items for sale, but she will undertake commissions too. She trades as Saffron and Bee.
On 4th and 5th December, 10am to 5pm she will be joining a family friend to mount a joint exhibition at Thorpe Market Parish Church. Clive has been making things out of wood all his life (he’s nearly seventy!) and specialises in turned ware using local hardwoods and carving using storm-felled limewood. His passion is carving feathers which are often made into functioning quill pens by the addition of an antique steel nib. He is very proud of his green policy which extends to natural wax or oil finishes, recycled and flawed timber and recycled, plastic-free packaging. Clive trades as Verdant Woodcraft. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

EAAA’s 24/7 service is saving lives all over the region
Since the launch of EAAA’s 24/7 service by air and road on 30 June and up until 7am on Monday 18 October, the charity’s crews have been tasked 307 times between 7pm and 7am, averaging nearly three missions a night. During this time, 87 of the taskings were by helicopter and 220 by rapid response vehicle.
As the nights draw in and the seasons change, the EAAA teams will be operating even more during the hours of darkness, to provide enhanced critical care, by air or by road, to people living across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
EAAA has been providing 24/7 care from both its bases in Norwich and Cambridge by rapid response vehicle for the last 18 months but began flying around-the-clock for the first time on 30 June this year, extending the night-time helicopter emergency medical service coverage in the region from its previous finishing time at 1:30am to complete coverage through to 7am. This change saw EAAA become the first air ambulance in the East of England to become 24/7 by both air and by road. As a result of the increased operational hours,
the crews have been able to cover a much wider area in East Anglia at night, helping more patients than was previously possible. By air, the crews have been tasked to Peterborough, across North Norfolk, into the depths of South Suffolk and as far southwest as Harpenden in Hertfordshire, to a mixture of emergencies including accidental injuries, cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions, medical emergencies, self-harm incidents and assaults.
Matthew Jones, CEO of EAAA, said: “We’re just over three months into providing a fully 24/7 service for the region and we’re really pleased to see that our teams are already making a big difference to people all over East Anglia and beyond. We can see that we are being tasked over a much wider area at night than ever before, showing that we’re taking our enhanced critical care skills to those patients most in need of our help.
“Moving towards providing a 24/7 service has taken us the best part of four years and included raising an extra million pounds a year to fund this change, extending to 24/7 operations by rapid response vehicle first and expanding and renovating the charity’s HQ in Norwich, to adequately house a 24/7 service by air and by road. We are incredibly pleased to

now be able to offer the same level of service, no matter what the time of day or night, to our patients and their families and this is only possible thanks to our incredible supporters.”
To facilitate the additional night flying at Norwich Airport also required upgrading the control system for the runway lights, costing around £60,000 which was kindly funded by the HELP Appeal. This drastically helps to reduce light pollution and saves energy by allowing the EAAA pilots to turn the lights on remotely via the aircraft VHF radio as they depart or approach the airport.
EAAA needs to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its life-saving service and is grateful to all of its supporters for the essential donations which keep the charity flying and have made a 24/7 service by air a reality for the people of East Anglia.

Popular ‘Launch a Memory’ lifeboat to carry a further 5,000 names
A new all-weather RNLI lifeboat to be based at Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, will carry the names of a further 5,000 people, following record take-up of the original 10,000 names. The Shannon class lifeboat Duke of Edinburgh, currently being built at the RNLI’s All-Weather Lifeboat Centre, is the third to be part of the charity’s ‘Launch a Memory’ fundraising campaign and the first to be based in England. Back in June, members of the public were offered the opportunity to commemorate a loved one by making a donation online and submitting the name of someone they wanted to remember. Each name will` be featured within the lifeboat’s letters and numbers, or ‘decal’, ‘RNLI 13-46’, displayed on the vessel’s hull. In just four months, more than 10,000 people have pledged their loved ones’ names, prompting the RNLI to open up space to take the total to 15,000. A second decal will be placed on the lifeboat’s ‘wheelhouse’ – the cabin which sits at the top of the vessel. The £2.5m Shannon class is the fastest all-weather lifeboat in the RNLI fleet. It was funded in part through an appeal in the local Wells community, and by the Civil Service charity The Lifeboat Fund. The new boat will be housed in a brand-new boathouse, currently under construction next to Beach Road and due for completion in time for the Shannon’s scheduled arrival in late 2022. Peter Rainsford, Chair of Wells Lifeboat, said: ‘We were so proud to be able to bring ‘Launch A Memory’ to North Norfolk, and we knew it would be popular, but we’ve been blown away by the speed with which these 10,000 names have been pledged. We’re incredibly thankful to all those who have made a donation. ‘RNLI lifeboat crews are busier than ever. The ‘Launch a Memory’ campaign, while a fundraiser for the charity, is also a way for us to say thank you to those people who support the lifeboat service, and our volunteer lifeboat crews. It’s humbling to think that when our new Shannon lifeboat arrives, we’ll carry with us the names of 15,000 loved ones every time we launch.’ There are three ways people can get the name of a loved one on the Launch a Memory lifeboat. Donations can be made online at rnli.org/WellsLaunch or by phone on 0300 300 99 90 (Monday to Friday 8am-6pm).
VACANCY
There is a suggested donation of £50 with space to commemorate up to 15,000 names on the lifeboat.

Lights Set to Illuminate Town Again
The town will once again shine this festive season thanks to the hard work and determination of a small team of volunteers who have been out Sunday mornings getting the lights up before this year's planned switch on. After last year's 'virtual' switch on the team have planned to bring back the usual switch on event albeit more spread out. This year's switch on will take place on Saturday 27th November with stalls and rides set out in both Marketplace and Church Street before North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker flicks the switch at 6.00pm. Father Christmas will be in attendance in his grotto which this year will be on Church Street. Once again, the team have made sure that there will be a tree in the town as in previous years. Chairman Colin Jeary said, 'It’s unbelievable that we start in October to make sure the lights are up in time but due to only having a few volunteers it takes a lot longer. This year we have been lucky to recruit some new helpers which has helped.' This year the group are adding more colour to the display, but the new lamps alone have cost in excess of £1800.

NCI Cromer Seeks Volunteers
National Coastwatch Institution (NCI Cromer) is currently seeking to recruit additional volunteers for its Cromer watch station overlooking both East Runton and Cromer beaches. We are a friendly team, from all walks of life, and we all feel good about keeping a watchful eye open for the safety of our local beaches, waters, people and wildlife!
experience. Full training ensures that volunteers reach the high standard expected by the NCI and HM Coastguard. Regular assessments take place at all stations and retraining programmes are held to maintain standards and keep watchkeepers up to date with the latest legislation or improved operational procedures.
Full training is given, and no previous maritime experience is necessary.
Watchkeepers are the eyes and ears along the coast, keeping a visual watch, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility. They remain vigilant at all times. Surveillance work is mainly routine but watchkeepers are trained to act in an emergency, report to the MCA and, if required, co-ordinate with the search and rescue services.
Our volunteers give 3 hours per week (or more if you so choose) and we only operate during daylight hours, so no night-time hours.
If you would like to learn more, please contact our station manager for an informal chat:
Richard Leeds 07767 492456 richard.leeds@nci.org.uk
A log of all water-based activities is kept during each watch and, when requested,

weather conditions can be passed to yachtsmen and fishermen before they put to sea. Also, with the new generation of web cams we can identify sea conditions for those who wish to check on the weather or sea state prior to doing any water sport activity, hopefully reducing the need for HM Coastguard response and RNLI callouts. During each watch other activities such as canoeing and diving etc are closely observed, as are bathers, walkers and climbers who use our shoreline.
Watchkeepers provide a vital link with all the emergency services and can provide an emergency contact point on land for both sea and shore users.

In 1994 when two fishermen lost their lives off the Cornish coast near a recently closed Coastguard lookout, local people decided to open and restore the visual watch. When the first station was opened at Bass Point on the Lizard, NCI was born. Today 57 stations keep a visual watch around the coastline of England and Wales, with more in the pipeline.
High technology and sophisticated systems such as radar and telecommunications have vastly improved safety at sea, but there is no substitute for a watchful pair of eyes. Accidents do happen and a computer or technology cannot spot a distress flare, an overturned boat, a yacht with problems, a water sports enthusiast in difficulty, or children or adults in trouble, or possible pollution incidents. That is why our lookouts and watchkeepers are an important service provider to all those who use our coastal waters, footpaths and coastline.
Each station is manned by a team of fully trained and dedicated volunteers who keep a daylight watch up to 365 days a year. Stations are equipped with telescopes, radar, telephone and weather instrumentation as well as up to date charts. Close contact with the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) aims to promote stations to Declared Facility Status in order to become an integral part of the National Search and Rescue Structure.
Watchkeepers come from all walks of life and offer a wide range of skills and

Anaesthetising Pets At Toll Barn Vets we are honoured to be trusted with loved family pets when they need surgical procedures both in routine and life-threatening situations. When a pet needs an anaesthetic this is understandably a very worrying time for both pet and owner, especially when it is an emergency or a life threatening situation, and we know that understanding what is happening to your pet is really important.
Every veterinary practice is different and has different protocols and procedures for anaesthetics but at Toll Barn Vets we work to a well-established procedure. So what exactly do we consider when your pet needs an anaesthetic?
Firstly we consider the species as many different injectable and gaseous anaesthetic drugs exist. Importantly, different species (and sometimes even different breeds within the same species) respond differently to the each drug and therefore species and breed play an important role in our choice of the right drugs to use to keep your pets as safe as possible. Seeing so many different species and breeds means we have a wide choice available to us, including Sevoflurane, a special gas anaesthetic often used in human paediatric surgery so we are able to choose the very best option for your pet.
Secondly, we perform a detailed pre-anaesthetic check. During this we check heart rate, temperature and breathing rate. We also check
for underlying health issues that might affect the anaesthetic choice. Much like in human hospitals we use this information to produce an ASA Score (an objective measure of the patient’s health and fitness for surgery). This helps us to predict and avoid, or specifically manage, any potential complications during or after the anaesthetic.
Next, our team consider the patients stress levels. Our purpose built separate dog, cat and exotic pet hospital wards along with our calming diffusers and music systems, aim to keep pets calm but by assessing stress or anxiety levels in advance we can make sure pets receive appropriate pre-medication to keep them nice and calm, and avoid any changes that might impact the anaesthetic. When booking admission appointments, we also try to book a later appointment for particularly nervous or anxious pets as this reduces their waiting time.
What about the anaesthetic itself? We hope there is never an anaesthetic complication but we also know it is incredibly important to be prepared just in case. Our Team run regular in house “Anaesthetic Emergency Simulations” to make sure that we are all ready to leap into action should the need arise. One of the key things in an emergency is being able to administer medication into a vein quickly which is why all our patients undergoing anaesthesia have intravenous catheters fitted. This also helps us to administer intravenous fluids to help keep their blood pressure stable. Our team use a full range of specialised multiparameter machines
which accurately measure blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide saturations, temperature, ECG, heart rate, breathing rate and breathing efficiency on patients ranging from the tiniest lizard or bird up to the largest dogs. Of course, all this monitoring is only as good as the person using the equipment! We are very proud to only use qualified veterinary nurses rather than lay staff for all our anaesthetics, and this helps us detect and act on any changes that may occur, helping us to keep your pet as safe as possible.
Following the anaesthetic, patients are recovered in our heated hospital wards where a qualified hospital nurse makes sure they are comfortable by performing regular “pain scores”, as well as making sure they have as many home comforts as possible to make their stay comfortable.
Obviously this is a very brief summary of what is involved with anaesthetising your pet, so please give us a call on 01692 407126 if you would like to discuss your individual pets procedure.

are both making good progress. Mabel continues to take her medication and Edna is now looking much healthier. Her coat is no longer matted, and we now believe she could be younger than first thought. She is putting on weight and loves a fuss but will need her nails clipped when she goes to the vets to be vaccinated.
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Stephanie gets many enquiries from people with cats needing to come into care and, although we would love to be able to help straight away there is often a delay before we can take them in as we have to wait for a cat pen to become free. Fortunately, most do not have to wait too long, and she always gives priority to those that have the most need. By adhering to Cats Protection guidelines and not mixing cats from different households, we have never experienced any cross infections in the 21+ years the branch has been in existence.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to Domino, Liberty and Dinky help with any other enquiries. industrial site kittens The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
Fortunately, when we received a call recently from the gentleman who cares for the cats on the industrial estate, advising he had found 4 kittens, a pen had just become vacant with Caroline, and we were able to take them. As they were only about 5 weeks old it was important to get them in straight away and, if necessary, we would have appealed to Lesley to allow us to use another of her pens. All four kittens are now in their new homes and enjoying life with their new families.
Although we show a few of our cats on our website most are not shown there for many reasons. We do get some enquiries from people looking for a cat or kitten via our website, although most people contact Stephanie direct on the cat phone. She will ask them lots of questions to enable her to advise which cats or kittens in care would be suitable for their lifestyle and give them contact details for the fosterer caring for them. Before being available for adoption they will have been given a clean bill of health by our vets, been neutered (if appropriate), vaccinated (including for FELV) and microchipped. When homing kittens too young to be neutered we will pay for this to be done by one of the veterinary surgeries we use. We also pay for the second vaccination when cats and kittens leave before this is due.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website,

Hedgehog Haven
It's the start of the season for Autumn juveniles, this little one, Hannah, was found in a garden in North Walsham. She had fallen onto a patio and was struggling to get out. If possible, please put out some wild hedgehog food to help build them up for the winter along with a shallow dish of water. Hedgehogs are meat eaters, and unlike African Pigmy ones do not eat fruit. We are hoping to be at NW Garden Centre on Saturday 20th November, come along and say hello.

As we enter Autumn we move towards Halloween and Bonfire Night which can bring a certain stress to our pets. This comes in the form of fireworks. It is estimated that 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. If any of you have a pet with a noise phobia, you will already be aware of how stressful it can be, but there are things we can do to manage the problem.
North Walsham Mothers’ Union
At our October meeting we were pleased to welcome Dr. Jan Sheldon who came along to talk to us about St Martins, a charity which works across the county to tackle homelessness and the sad plight of rough sleepers. The charity began in 1972 in Norwich Cathedral and now has a range of services around the city. It was emphasised that homelessness can happen to anyone, we none of us really know what the future holds for us and people living on the street need specialist support. Giving food or money, although kindly meant, does not help the situation it is much better to be able to refer someone to where they can get the help they need.
By preparing in advance before the fireworks start your pet will be better able to cope with the noises. Aim to walk dogs during the day when there are less likely to be fireworks set off. Once the fireworks start close the curtains and put some music or TV on to muffle the sounds. It can be helpful to provide a safe and secure den for your pet to feel secure in. If the problem progresses or you pet seems very stressed then it is sensible to seek the advice of a behaviourist or vet who may be able to help modify the behaviour and reduce the anxiety.
St Martins have a Charity shop at Anglia Square, this is a shop with a difference, nothing is priced, and people are simply asked to pay what they can afford. This idea has proved very popular and also profitable for the charity. Dr Sheldon finished her talk with a reminder that ‘Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and compassion.’
Mothers’ Union meet at 2pm on the second Tuesday of the month in St Nicholas Room, North Walsham. Visitors and new members are welcome. For further information contact Petra 07749253465 or Ann 01692 402705
We often have clients seeking sedation for their animals during these periods of stress, but it isn’t always the answer. Some sedatives leave animals incapacitated, but still consciously aware of the noises, which can be equally traumatic. There are, however, some very effective anxiety relieving supplements available from most vets that help to alleviate stress without the side effects of some drugs. As with all behavioural challenges it is better to try and address them sooner rather than later, particularly with winter celebrations just round the corner after bonfire night.
Weather Forecast
The past three months came in nicely as a typical British summer although August on its own was a disappointment to say the least. July rescued itself with a few warm days and September was an above average month although the last week went downhill quickly as colder Atlantic air steamed in sourced from a pool of unseasonal cold air that has been around the Greenland area since the beginning of August. The next three months will kick off unsettled or stormy but high pressure should settle things down in the first ten days of October and give us at least seven fine days. Thereafter and through November and December the weather should be what you would expect from the last two months of the year in a maritime climate with no prolonged deviations. However, the cold air massing in northern latitudes has the potential to undo many predictions including this one. Ned Nimbus

Exactly seven years ago, ‘Love for Leo’ was founded by partners Moss Taylor and Robina Churchyard. Our aim is to raise funds for any children living in Norfolk & Suffolk with cerebral palsy. This was as a direct result of seeing appeals for help in the local papers, and the fact that one of Moss’s grandsons, Leo, was severely affected.
Cerebral palsy is often due to problems at birth and results in varying degrees of lifelong physical disability. Unfortunately, not all the expensive equipment needed to improve the quality of life of these children is available through the National Health Service, nor are some of the surgical treatments and other therapies, and this is where Love for Leo is able to make a contribution towards these costs.
While Robina and Moss have personally raised over £10,000, our fund has passed the £36,000
mark since 2014, which has only been possible by very many generous donations from a large number of friends, as well as the Lights Up show at the Little Theatre, Sheringham Masonic Lodge, the Crown quizzes and Tesco’s Bags of Help blue token scheme. We were also the beneficiary of the Captains’ chosen charity at Sheringham Golf Club in 2018/19 and received the magnificent sum of over £6,000. One of the most successful and enjoyable fund-raising events was the Who Dun It at The Muckleburgh Collection, written and directed by Leo David and Audrey Williams. Over the years our tombola at the 40s Weekend in Sheringham has raised almost £2,000 but as a result of Covid-19, it has not taken place for two years, but requests for financial help for children with cerebral palsy still keep coming in.
During the last seven years, Love for Leo has given financial support to 43 children with cerebral palsy and to NANSA (Norfolk & Norwich Scope Association) for their work
Spitfire Visits Cadets
In these difficult times, we particularly appreciate any donations, every penny we collect going directly to the children, as there are no administrative costs at all. We also welcome requests for financial assistance for any Norfolk or Suffolk children with cerebral palsy, by contacting Moss Taylor on 01263 823637 or at moss.taylor@btinternet.com or Robina Churchyard on 01263 823588 or at reacgenet@btinternet.com
Terry was still a very active member of 2110 Sqn, teaching radio to the cadets. In over 50 years of cadet service hundreds of young men and women gained radio qualifications through Terry's tutoring. He was awarded a certificate from the RAF Air Cadet Commandant, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, in recognition of his service to the Air Training Corps in 2018.
Terry joined the RAF as a Boy Entrant and served 27 years in the Royal Air Force. Then, inspired by his son who was a cadet, he joined the ATC in North Finchley and rose to the rank of warrant officer. After retiring from uniform service, he continued as a civilian instructor teaching radio, a subject about which he was both expert and very passionate. In September 1997 he moved to 1132 Sqn in Stalham where he worked until the squadron closed. He then moved to North Walsham where he taught radio from September 2017.
Hopefully his talk and models will inspire the cadets to get involved in aeromodelling themselves, albeit in a somewhat more modest scale. Then there will be an opportunity to enter the Wing modelling competition next year.

with disabled children, totalling over £33,000. This money has been used towards the purchase of wheelchairs/buggies, PPods, Windmill car seats and specialized walkers, as well as other items to improve the lives of these unfortunate, but almost invariably, happy children. Most recently, we are pleased to announce that Lord Vincent Constantine has graciously agreed to become our Patron.
2110 [North Walsham] Squadron RAF Air Cadets, Civilian Instructor Terry Owen has sadly passed away at the age of 85
Last week North Walsham Air Cadets were treated to a talk from Mr Richard Gale. Richard makes large scale model aircraft and ships. He brought along a ¼ scale model Spitfire; with an eight feet wingspan this is one of Richards smaller models! He has previously made a model Vulcan with a nearly 20 feet wingspan! He has also made enormous models of aircraft carriers and the RMS Titanic. Richard spoke to the cadets about his models and his long life and at the end of the evening said how impressed he was with the cadets; he hopes to return to North Walsham to see the cadets Remembrance parade next Richard Gale with his model Spitfire month.
If flying, and much more interests you, North Walsham Air Cadets paade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 17 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers for uniform staff, civilian instructors or committee members.

Pilot Officer Matt Williams, 2110 Sqn, said “The advice and guidance he has given me ... over the last year has been invaluable...I wouldn't begin to thank him enough for what he's done.”

Managing financial affairs under a lasting power of attorney by Sudan Dayment, Associae Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
Making a lasting power of attorney (also known as an LPA) for your finances is an important part of lifetime planning. An LPA should be set up well in advance of when it might be needed, although it can be difficult to predict when that might be. If in the future you have an accident or illness, like dementia, an LPA enables other people (your attorneys) to help make decisions on your behalf.
In addition to managing bank accounts and selling property, an LPA clarifies your wishes on a wide range of financial decisions, including if you have a business or complex investments.
Funds You may have investments in certain funds which require your express consent or discretionary management funds to be set up before your attorneys can be authorised to deal with them.
Overseas assets If you hold overseas assets, an LPA made in England and Wales may not be recognised by the jurisdiction in which those assets are held. You will need legal advice for each jurisdiction to ensure your attorneys can act on your behalf in the different territories.
Gifts Attorneys can make small gifts in limited circumstances on your behalf, but you may authorise them to make larger or more regular gifts. For example, you may wish to make such gifts for tax planning purposes, or because you would like to provide financial assistance for family members who need extra support. Whatever the reason, you will need to include a specific authority to allow such gifts to be made.
Dependants You may be concerned about a family member or another dependant who relies upon you financially, especially if they are unable to manage their own finances.
Business assets If you have any interest in a business, you should ensure that the appointed attorneys have the necessary insight and business acumen to continue to run things smoothly. If you wish to appoint separate attorneys for your business decisions, you will need to make two separate financial lasting powers of attorney, one for your personal financial decisions and one for your business decisions.
Avoiding common mistakes Many people choose to appoint the friends or family closest to them without considering
whether they are suitable for the role. If they are not good with their own money, think carefully about trusting them with yours. There may also be times where your interests could conflict with theirs.
Careful considerations • You can decide when your LPA comes into force. • Your attorneys must always act in your best interests. • You may need to include specific instructions to extend your attorneys’ powers. • You should appoint more than one attorney or replacement attorneys who would step in if your first choice of attorney can no longer act for you.

Send a Smile with Santa appeal launched for 2021
The annual appeal to give every patient at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital a gift on Christmas Day has been launched.
Each year, the N&N Hospitals Charity’s Send a Smile with Santa appeal collects more than 1,000 presents kindly donated by the members of the public and businesses across Norfolk. These are then distributed to patients, both young and old, who will spend Christmas in hospital and are unable to celebrate at home with their families.
This year, the charity is asking people who would like to give a present to a patient, to either purchase an item from the list below and drop it off at the hospital or make a small donation online at our website which could then be used by the charity to purchase a gift.
All gifts must be new and unwrapped and can be dropped off from now until 5 December at the hospital’s West Inpatients Reception Desk which is open 24/7 or at the Charity Hub East Atrium Monday to Friday 9-4pm.
For children and young people: • Lego for girl/boys • Items suitable for babies – 18 months old • Items for 18 months – 5 years • Gifts for teenagers including fidget toys or other suitable items • Sensory toys for children with complex needs
making a donation which we will use to purchase a present. For example, £5 could help us to buy a toiletries’ gift set which will be wrapped up and given out on Christmas morning.”
Louise Cook, Head of Fundraising, said: “Send a Smile is now in its sixth year and each year we are so grateful for the wonderful gifts given to us which we know make a huge difference to our patients. We know that people have been fantastic supporting the NHS through the pandemic and we are asking you again to help us make Christmas special for those patients in hospital on Christmas Day. If you are purchasing an item, please do look at the list as this has been put together or consider

Change, Grow, Live is a charity which delivers the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service, and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers across the whole of the county who would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care. The children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive. The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun; taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest. Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support are provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses. Homity Pie
As winter comes around, it is time to look out those warming recipes which just hit the spot on a cold day. This one is just the ticket and won’t break the bank. You can jazz it up with any left over veg, mix it up with different cheeses (substituting some of the cheddar with blue cheese makes a change) and any leftovers are good cold the next day. If you want to save a bit of time you can use readymade pastry. Good served with plenty of fresh veg or salad.
INGREDIENTS For the Pastry 125 g (4oz) plain flour 125 g (4oz) wholemeal plain flour + extra for rolling out 150 g (5oz) butter chilled, + extra for greasing 1 egg lightly beaten For the Filling 500g potatoes 125g spring onions
1 leek 2 tablespoon vegetable / sunflower oil 25g butter 3 tablespoon double cream 150g mature cheddar cheese 15g parsley chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper
METHOD To make the pastry, place the flours, and chilled butter into a good-sized bowl. Rub the butter into the flours until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre of the breadcrumbs and add the beaten egg. Mix to a dough, adding a little cold water or milk to fully bring the mixture together if required. Wrap the pastry and chill for at least 30 minutes. Wash the potatoes and cut into chunks about 2cm (1in) cubed. Steam until tender about 15 – 20 minutes. Whilst the potatoes are cooking prepare the other ingredients. Cut the spring onions into 1 cm (½in) chunks. Wash the leek thoroughly, cut into 2cm (1in) rounds. Chop the parsley. Grate the cheese. Once the potatoes are cooked through, heat the oil in a large frying pan and set over a medium heat. Add the leek and cook gently until softened. Add the spring onions and cook for a further 2 or 3 minutes, stirring regularly. Add the butter and allow it to melt into the vegetables. Then stir in the cooked potatoes. Add the double cream and 3/4 of the cheese, stir again. Keep stirring until the cheese melts and the double cream to start to thicken. Add the parsley. Season to taste. Turn off the heat and set aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 220℃ (200℃ fan)/425°F/gas mark 7. Roll the pastry into a circle about 5mm (¼in) thick and large enough to line an 8-9-inch, deep pie dish. Grease the pie dish with a little butter. Use the rolling pin to gently lift the pastry and lay it gently over the pie dish. Press the pastry into the pie dish, avoid stretching it. Trim away the excess from the rim. Once the filling is completely cool spoon it into the lined pie dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top of the filling Bake for 20 – 25 minutes until the pastry is cooked through and the cheese is starting to brown. Enjoy! Carolyn Burn

Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge
With Christmas approaching and all of us tightening our belts, one idea for presents with a personal touch is to make something. This scores on two counts, it is cheaper than paying for commercial products and all the fancy packaging and people appreciate the effort of something made especially for them, particularly if children have been involved too.

WHY TREATMENT COMBINATIONS?
A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, over active muscles, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover! GOLD PACKAGE Wrinkle softening injections for the upper face, includes frown line, forehead lines and crow’s feet. 3 syringes of dermal fillers to soften nose to mouth lines and to restore fuller cheeks. IPL photo facial to brighten and blend the skin complexion. SILVER PACKAGE Wrinkle softening injections for the upper face, includes frown line, forehead lines and crow’s feet. 1 syringe of dermal fillers to soften nose to mouth lines. JAWLINE AND NECK MAKEOVER The neck is a very delicate and visible part of the body. This includes radiofrequency treatment of the jawline and neck, clearlift laser and LED light therapy, this is followed by nefertiti lift muscle relaxing injections to weaken muscles responsible for neck bands and jawline sagging. HEAVENLY HANDS Hands are often the most neglected parts of the body and often show signs of ageing. These include volume loss and skin changes that show pigmentation, loss of volume and prominent veins.
We use 1.5 cc dermal fillers to plump up the hands and then IPL or q switched laser to tackle pigmentation.

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton 295. Paul Keres, Sports Referee, 1933

296. Paul Keres, Vaba Maa, 1932
In Town, on the Coast and in the Country, wherever your Norfolk home, we are your local Trusted Property Experts.
295. Mate in two moves
Solution to No. 295: 1. Bc7, threat 2. Bf7. 1… Bg5 2. Nd4; 1… Bf4 2. Bh7; 1… Be3 (or 1… Rf8) 2. Nc1; 1… Bd2 2. Ne5; 1… Bc1 2. Nc3. The 3 black major pieces each control 2 white batteries; the black B opens one control line to stop the threat, but wherever it goes, it closes another control line enabling White to shut off the second control of that battery. Theme shown with beautiful clarity, though the white Q functions only as a B.
We are able to look after your every need, from full market exposure to discreet one-off buyer introductions.
No. 296, by the same illustrious OTB grandmaster, has an interesting theme: a Grimshaw (mutual interference) on e5 as an anticipatory unpin of the black Q. Pretty but fairly easy Key, so difficulty 2.

The Cedars refurbishment project tender issued! What’s happening when in North Walsham?
The High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) Project North Walsham is pleased to be able to announce the next steps in the refurbishment and renovation of the Cedars building in the Town Centre.
During the past few months, work has continued by the HAZ project team in order to be able to get to a position where an invitation to tender is now live. For those interested in the tender document it can be found on our website by going to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/contracts-andtenders/proc072-the-cedars-north-walsham-norfolk/ The deadline for submissions is the 8th November 2021. A panel will consider all the tenders and it is hoped that they will be able to appoint a contractor this year so that work can start as soon as possible.
This document sets out in more details the extensive works that are planned for the building including attention to the roof, the movement of the resident bee colony as well as redecoration and restoration inside and out to restore the Cedars to its former glory. It is envisaged that once the contractor has been appointed work can start. It is likely to be early in 2022, if not before! Watch this space for more exciting updates.
The plans for its final use will be firmed up over the coming months, once the building is in a better state to view and tour. However, anyone interested in the space can request an escorted tour and discussion with the Strategic Property Surveyor leading the Cedars project. Five Hospital Governors Sought to Represent Patients Across Norfolk
People living in Norfolk will have the opportunity to put their name forward as a governor at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as five public governors reach the end of their three-year term. The vacancies are in Broadland, North Norfolk, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, plus two posts in Breckland.
David White, Chairman of NNUH, said: “We want governors drawn from a wide range of backgrounds who share our passion for providing the best possible services for local people.
“Our governors come together to form our Council of Governors which has an important role in shaping the future of the organisation.
“Governors need enthusiasm for the role and a desire to get involved with our hospitals. We look at what’s working well and what could be improved with governors providing a useful link with the local community. ”
The responsibilities of governors include supporting the recruitment of new members, attending Council of Governor meetings and engaging with the Board of Directors on a range of issues. Governors serve a term of three years after which they can be re-elected.
To be eligible to become a governor, people must be aged over 16 years, interested in the success of the Trust and join NNUH’s free membership scheme at https://secure.membra.co.uk/nnuhapplicationform/
Potential candidates have until 3 November to return their completed election forms. The results of the election, where members vote for their choice of governor, will be announced on 14 December.

Marathon Success for Local MP
NW Town FC
The under 18s have been in weekly action in the floodlit Under 18s league with mixed results. However, their teamwork and development cannot be questioned being topped off with players featuring throughout our adult teams with no less than four playing in our reserves and first team. This evolution is the platform the club has been working so hard to build on over the last few years.
A local MP has completed the London Marathon today, raising over £26,000 for charity in the process.
Duncan Baker, MP for North Norfolk, crossed the finish line in 4 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds, marking the end of many months of training and fundraising.
“I’m absolutely delighted not only to finish my first marathon, but to have hit – and gone past – our fundraising target. We have so many amazing charities in North Norfolk, doing so much for our local communities and it’s great to be able to support their work. I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated, and so generously, to be able to help 26 local charities nominated by the public.” Duncan has been fitting training around his Parliamentary and constituency work, often running around Westminster after midnight to get in shape for the London Marathon – and he’s becoming a familiar sight to many on his regular runs around North Norfolk. The 26 charities benefiting from Duncan’s run are: Littlelifts, Norfolk Coast Riding for the Disabled, North Norfolk Astronomy Society, the MacMillan Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital, Holt Youth Project, Wild Touch Wildlife Centre, North Norfolk Foodbank, Stalham Community Gym, Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Fitzroy Support at Home, Cromer Youth & Skate Park, Holt & District Dementia Support, Wells Community Hospital, RNLI, The Treehouse, North Norfolk Cats Lifeline, Aldborough Village Care, Ladybird Pre-School Nursery, Sheringham Little Theatre, Friends of Roughton School, Canaan Christian Trust, DEBRA, East Anglian Children’s Hospices, East Anglian Air Ambulance, and Thornage Hall Independent Living. The 26 Miles for 26 Charities fundraiser is still open for donations – just visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/duncanbakermp

Their last game was on the 21/10/21 a local derby which saw them come out losing 4-1 at home to Sheringham. Plenty of effort from the team but got over ran through the middle with errors ultimately seeing our downfall.
Craig Harrison the manager commented that when we pass and move, we play some good football. In one of those spells, we saw a great goal from Joe Baxter Hale who picked up the ball when it was cleared from a corner moved forward and drove a low shot into the corner.

Two wins from three in the past month have seen the Vikings maintain their impressive start to life in London & South East Premier. Prior to last week’s match versus Sutton, they were fourth on 25 points, six less than leaders Wimbledon. Their defeat was at Havant 20 -12, but that result was given perspective by the Hampshire side then only losing by two points against both Wimbledon and second placed Dorking in successive weeks. The wins came against Sidcup at home 27 – 17 and away to Brighton where, in a memorable performance, they scored seven tries to overwhelm their hosts 47 -8.
The Raiders have won all their matches and sit top of Eastern Counties One North, ahead of Diss 2nds who are also unbeaten but have
an inferior points scored difference. Player numbers are such that, after a few years dormant, the Warriors (3rdXV) have played three matches with a similar number of fixtures scheduled before Christmas.
All the Youth, Minis and Valkyrie sides have been in regular action too with the Under 16s travelling to Sussex for two matches the same weekend as the Vikings were at Brighton.
The Vikings are not at home again until 27th November when Wimbledon are the visitors. This Saturday (6th) they are at third placed Sevenoaks, returning to Kent the following weekend to play Tunbridge Wells. Meanwhile the Raiders are at home to their counterparts from Diss on the 6th and Norwich on 4th December. No matches scheduled for the 20th.

Swim Gala Provides First Opportunity for Competition North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club are recovering well post Covid 19 and membership has soared in its junior section.
Therefore, Beeston Hall School kindly opened up their facilities for the Vikings to either compete for the very first time or a chance of a little more race practise in a friendly match against the school team. No fewer than thirty-one swimmers took part as distances were contested over both 20m and 40m in front of a large gathering of appreciative parents and spectators.
There were some exciting races and close finishes none closer than the Boys Under 12 40m Freestyle when Jasper Keeler (Beeston) just out touched George Edridge (Vikings) by two tenths of a second whilst both teams scored points on either side of the lane lines. However, when the final tally was revealed Beeston Hall School ended up worthy winners.
At the conclusion, Mrs Caswell from Beeston school said “For many this was their first chance to race against children outside of their school and they enjoyed the opportunity and rose to the challenge. Vikings put on an excellent display with some brilliant swims, and we had a number of nail-biting finishes.” and Sarah Buchan, Chair of the Vikings replied with "Our junior section has been developing well lately and it was pleasing to see them reaping their reward for all their hard work they have put in over the summer months.
Wear it Pink Day
It was a very Pink Day at Sheringham Golf Club on Tuesday 12th October as the Ladies regaled themselves in colour, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness.
We would like to thank Beeston for their hospitality and friendly rivalry.” - John Holden
Ladies Vice Captain Christine Tew and Past Captain Elaine Richards went all out with their pink hair.
For a free try out to join the club, please e-mail them. enquiries@norfolkvikings.co.uk
The club raised £500 for the charity from their club competition, a raffle and donations.
