Hospital staff praise community support through lockdown

Staff at a North Norfolk hospital have praised the morale-boosting support they have had from the local community through lockdown.

North Walsham War Memorial Hospital has been dealing with Covid patients as well as routine ones over the last six months, when a temporary ward was added in a day room to cope with the extra workload. Ward manager Mandie Owen reported to a meeting of the hospital Friends group that it had been a challenging time, with community staff drafted in to help in-patients. The support Nurse Stella Mihalache and support ward from the community, manager Diane Cremin receiving the final including the Friends goody parcel. who provided weekly Photo: Richard Batson / Hospital Friends goody bags of food for ward staff, was “generous and appreciated, she said. “The patients and staff felt very supported by the local community and the Friends during the outbreak. It has all been much appreciated. Continued on page 4...

Hospital staff praise community support through lockdown

The Benjamin Foundation

Continued from front cover... Staff have enjoyed sharing some of the gifts with the patients to brighten their day, especially those without any friends or family to visit. And staff particularly loved the support during a bad day. She added: “I cannot tell you how proud I am of the staff. They have worked incredibly hard to support their patients and care for their colleagues if they’re struggling on a shift.”

project.

The homes on Bluebell Road in North Walsham have been made possible thanks to the 'Future Builders' project which is funded by OVO Energy’s charity arm OVO Foundation. The renovation has also received funding from LandAid, is part of the End Youth Homelessness national programme and is supported by several other organisations. Future Builders gives local young people, many who have previously been vulnerably housed, the opportunity to gain valuable on-site skills and experience while renovating the semi-derelict homes.

As well as the Friends parcels, there have been gifts from other local shops, businesses and organisations ranging from flowers to takeaway meals. The 24-bed unit was prepared for a second wave of pandemic should it happen the report added.

The Friends continue to liaise with health officials about future projects post lockdown, including funding the fitting out of a room at the hospital where visitors can stay overnight or spend a bit of quiet time. Other plans include asking Paston College art students to paint a mural to brighten a blank brick wall outside a ward window. The group uses money donated by the public to provide “extras” to benefit patients, staff and visitors.

Thanks to their hard work, there are now two, fully furnished three-bedroom homes which are available for young people, who are in education, training or employment, to co-live in at an affordable cost of £50 per week, which includes all bills.

The two Victory Housing Homes each have three bedrooms. Young people will have their own, secure bedroom, with a queen-sized bed and storage facilities, a shared kitchen, bathroom and lounge with a Smart-TV. The kitchen is fully fitted and includes a cooker, washing machine, fridge and freezer. There are modern furnishings, fixtures and fittings throughout, a garden and that all-important WiFi.

Michala Howarth, Home Starter Development Worker for The Benjamin Foundation says: “The homes are an ideal next step for young people looking to grow in independence. With rent which is affordable, they can live with friends in the homes and have the opportunity to grow in confidence and life skills as they negotiate their way into the world of work, training or education. The great news is that our team is on hand to support them if them need it. We can help with things such as budgeting, paperwork and careers, taking away any stress of learning how to live independently.”

If you are aged 18-25 and in training, education or employment and would like to enquire about living in one of the homes, contact Michala on 07976 851202.

The Future Builders project is supported by OVO Foundation, LandAid, End YouthHomelessness, Victory Housing, Easy Bathrooms, RTB Roofing and Builders, Gasway, Nova Training, PTS Plumbing Trade Supplies and Vaillant.

283. Mate in two moves

Well Autumn arrived with a bang! The roofers will be happy.

Covid 19 restrictions are ever changing, creating yet another blow to our leisure and hospitality industry. We are very lucky here in North Norfolk however, with one of the lowest incidence of infections in the country. I like to think that this is down to most people obeying the rules and being careful and considerate. Now, more than ever, we need to keep this up and avoid a further lock down, for the sake of our businesses and our vulnerable. So, stock up on those designer face masks and dig in. This may be a long haul, but it will be worth it when we come through the other side. Oh, and don’t forget to get that flu jab!

Solution to No. 282: 1 Nh1, no threat. 1… d4 2. Qf1 (set 2. Ne4); by-play 1… Qxa6 2. Rxa6, 1… Q else 2. QxQ, 1… B- 2. Rf3. The move 2. Qf1, unpinning the black Q after 1… d4 has cut her off from f2, is a Gamage unpin. This changed mate after a no-threat key with every black move answered by a mate in the initial position, makes the problem a Mutate.

We will be continuing to publish the magazine monthly for the foreseeable future until advertising and editorial picks up. Copies may take a little longer to deliver due to occasional problems with covering delivery rounds, but magazines are available at most of our usual pick up points.

If you have any interesting stories or pictures to share with our readers, you can email them to Jo on info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Cyril Stanley Kipping composed around 7000 problems, was Problem Editor in both Chess and Chess Amateur, and edited The Problemist for over 30 years. His No. 284 is a Miniature (7 units or fewer) with a promotion theme. The key piece is obviously the Q, who is a mere spectator in the diagram, and her destination should be pinpointed by the need to guard certain squares after the black K takes his flights with discovered check, so Difficulty again 2.

Coronavirus Job Support Scheme

Employment Law Update: by Shaun Taylor

With the end of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme in sight (31 October 2020), the Chancellor has outlined the structure of an additional scheme, the Job Support Scheme, ('JSS') that will start from 1 November 2020 and run for an initial 6 months.

The JSS is intended to move away from the furlough scheme and only support viable jobs, roles that are still required but face reduced hours due to reduced demand flowing from the economic impact and the continuing restrictions.

As such, to benefit from the scheme, employees must work at least 33% of their usual hours.

Employers will have to wait for the guidance and legislation to be released by the government to see the detail of the scheme and whether it will be a viable option. But we know from the introduction of the CJRS that this may be inconsistent and take several iterations before all questions are answered.

Main Points: The main points known so far are: 1. Employees must be working at least 33% of their usual hours.

2. For the hours lost and not worked, the government and employer will each pay one third of the equivalent salary. 3. The government contribution will be capped at £697.92 per month.

The example provided by the government shows that an employee working 33% of their normal hours will be paid in full for that 33% by their employer. The government and employer will then pay an additional 22% each (66% x 2/3), subject to the cap, resulting in the employee receiving 77% of their normal pay. Eligibility: • All employers are eligible however, large businesses must show a fall in turnover, as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, in order to apply.

• Both employees and employers are eligible even if they did not use the CJRS scheme previously.

• Employees must have been employed on 23 September 2020 in order to be eligible.

• Employers who are eligible to claim the Jobs Retention Bonus can do so along side the JSS.

Employers are not able to serve redundancy notices on employees who are on the JSS. Whether this means consultation can take place or not is unclear.

Our expert Employment Law Team work with employers to understand their business and the problems they face, find a tailored and pragmatic solution that will suit their needs and help implement any changes. Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure

Keeping yourselves and others safe

If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell.

Lights Will Shine this Christmas

Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.

North Walsham Christmas lights have stated that they will ensure lights, albeit possibly a smaller display, will deck the town over this year’s festive season. Chairman Colin Jeary said, ‘The committee decided at the beginning of August that it would be impossible to police the annual switch on event, so this was shelved but we needed to try and make sure the town had some lights this year.’

As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next.

The group set up a just giving page for donations which initially aimed to raise ÂŁ500, currently this is sitting at ÂŁ720 and will stay active until Christmas. The page can be found at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nwxmaslight

NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves.

There are also collection tins in Showcase Gallery and Extra Care Mobility have kindly agreed to be a drop of point for donations also. Colin said he hoped that the townsfolk would support the group this year as the lights are generally financed from the switch on event and donations from traders who have been hit twice this year by both the gas works and then Covid 19.

Local Outbreak Control Plan

The lights are planned to start going up in October by a small team of volunteers who give up Sunday mornings, Colin added volunteers are always welcome.

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

To find out more details email Colin directly - jeabol@aol.com

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Having a flu vaccination will help protect you, your family and your NHS Health chiefs are urging people in Norfolk and Waveney to have a flu vaccine to help protect themselves and their families and ease pressure on the NHS this winter.

GP surgeries and community pharmacies have begun vaccinating local people against flu. This year there will be a change to the way flu vaccinations are delivered as health teams need to factor in social distancing and infection prevention measures in order to continue to keep people safe. Due to this, vaccinations will be delivered in a phased way with various cohorts of patients being invited at different times.

Some GP practices may be offering drivethrough appointments at community centres or village halls, and practices are contacting those eligible by letter, telephone or text to offer specific time appointments rather than the usual drop-in sessions. Please be patient – you don’t need to contact your GP practice as they’ll be in touch with you. Alternatively you can contact a pharmacy for an appointment.

Many local community pharmacies are also offering bookable flu vaccination appointments for those who are eligible. So please contact your pharmacy for details. Pharmacies are working with GP colleagues to ensure the best possible access to the vaccine for all eligible groups and may be able to offer evening or weekend appointments.

This year will be the most comprehensive flu programme ever, with more people eligible for the free NHS vaccine which will be given over the next few months. With this in mind, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging the public to have the vaccine for flu if they are eligible as it will reduce the risk of catching and spreading the virus over the winter months.

Flu can cause severe illness and even death among vulnerable groups, as well as complications like bronchitis and pneumonia.

Patients in ‘at risk’ groups who are eligible to receive a free flu vaccination include: • everyone aged 65 years or over • women who are pregnant • those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups including patients who suffer from a chronic illness, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), kidney disease, hepatitis, Parkinsons, HIV and diabetes • children aged two or three years old on 31 August 2020 • all primary school-aged children • children with a health condition that puts them at a greater risk of flu • those in long-stay residential care homes • Carers - including young carers, parent carers and adult carers - who are looking after a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, mental health or addiction cannot manage without their support • All frontline health and social care workers

This year also includes: • year 7 secondary school-aged children – these vaccinations will take place at school • household members of those who may have been shielding • later in the year the age range may extend to those aged 50-64 Later this year, the flu vaccine may be offered

to 50-64 year olds providing there is sufficient vaccine, and no NHS appointments will be offered for this age group until then. This is to ensure that those who are most at risk are vaccinated first.

If you are 50-64 and you are in one of the other groups which is eligible for the flu vaccination, for example you have a health condition which puts you at risk from the flu, you will be invited earlier.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, a GP and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney CCG, said: “Across Norfolk and Waveney we are working hard on our vaccination program plans and our GPs, nurses, community pharmacists and others will be going to great lengths this year to give this vital protection to many more people in a safe and convenient way. So when the time comes would urge everyone invited for a flu vaccination to get it as soon as possible.

“Flu can be a horrible virus, especially if you've already got a respiratory illness and if bad enough, could mean you having to go into hospital, something none of us really want.

“We particularly want to encourage over 65s, pregnant women, those with certain medical conditions, carers and those who have been shielding to get the vaccine. I would urge all people who fit into the key groups to think about being vaccinated this year, it could save lives and help protect the NHS this winter.”

More information on who is eligible for the flu vaccine is available here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ vaccinations/who-should-have-flu-vaccine

Six public governors sought at NNUH People from a wide range of backgrounds and interests are being sought as governors by the Norfolk’s largest NHS Foundation Trust which runs the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Cromer Hospital.

to shape the future of services.”

Responsibilities include supporting the recruitment of members, attending Council of Governor meetings and engaging with the Board of Directors on a range of issues. Governors serve a term of three years after which they can be re-elected.

David White, Chairman of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are looking for governors who have varied backgrounds and interests, who care about our patients and staff and can help our hospitals to continue on their journey of improvement."

Six public governors have reached the end of their three-year term creating vacancies in Broadland, Breckland, Great Yarmouth and Waveney, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk and South Norfolk.

To be eligible to become a governor, people must be aged over 16 years, interested in the success of the Trust and join NNUH’s free membership scheme at https://secure.membra.co.uk/nnuhapplicationform/

Nominations open on 21 September and potential candidates have until 20 October to return their completed election forms. The results of the election, where members vote for their choice of governor, will be announced on 1 December.

The role of a governor is to provide a direct link with the local community and represent the interests of local people as hospital services change and develop. Governors work in partnership with the Board of Directors helping the Trust to achieve its vision of delivering high quality services to local people.

To find out more information go to: https://www.mi-nomination.com/nnuhft or contact Mi-Voice which is handling the election on behalf of NNUH by telephone on 023 8076 3987 or by email at support@mi-voice.com

GREAT NEWS! WE’RE OVER HALFWAY THERE! BUT WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!

North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Unit Progress Report The Cromer Community and Hospital Friends fundraising campaign was launched just before the Covid 19 pandemic broke. The target was to raise £500,000 to equip the planned new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre.

Unfortunately, all the major fundraising events for the year have had to be cancelled which was a major blow to the campaign. But the amazing news is that with the help of a legacy, local grants, and the wonderful endeavours of local people the Hospital Friends have managed to raise over £250,000, half of the amount needed.

The building work on the new Centre is progressing well and is on target to open in the Summer of 2021. Below is an artist’s impression of what the new Centre will look like. However, there is still a long way to go to raise the money to fully equip the Centre so that it can work at its full potential. This will be an amazing and desperately needed facility, especially as the demand for cancer referrals after Covid 19 is expected to increase significantly.

The Cromer Hospital Friends have to try and find alternative ways to raise funds because of the current situation and we have some really

Ned Nimbus Weather Prediction Oct – Dec

After the past three months of typical British weather the next three months are unlikely to stray far from normal. OCTOBER is likely to still give us good fine spells with temperatures above average. Overall, no weather type will last for long with a fairly mobile Atlantic driven pattern continuing. NOVEMBER and DECEMBER overall we can expect a couple of months with no set of conditions sticking around for long and temperatures around average. November 10 and December 8. It is worth noting that at the time of writing a large area of cold air sits over Greenland and adjacent northern latitudes, ,this will need watching because a deep depression (possibly ex tropical) tracking between Iceland and Scotland for instance could redistribute some of this cold air mass. Update from Coastal Arts

On 11th September 2020, the trustees of COAST Arts met to discuss our future given the pandemic we have been living with since March this year and the fact that restrictions appear to be getting tighter again.

It is with a heavy heart that the small group of trustees have agreed to close the charity. Since we wrote to you in June with a more optimistic outlook on how COAST Arts would come back in 2021, a number of the trustees have found that with the changes in their lives following the Coronavirus crisis, they do not have the time or space to continue all that they were doing to keep COAST Arts going. We also realise that it may be sometime before the events that we had planned could come to fruition, particularly our annual festival which has been the hallmark of COAST Arts for the last 10 years.

We will be working closely with our partners and funders to hopefully pass on some of the work we do so that it continues, possibly in another form, within Cromer and the surrounding area.

We are especially grateful to NOVA, Friends of North Lodge Park, The Belfry Centre for Music and the Arts, Rock the Lobster, The Atrium Cinema Group and others who have made significant contributions to COAST Arts, for all their support and help over the years. We hope that they will all continue to flourish in what is a particularly difficult time for the arts.

We also hope that the new group, Cromer Artspace, will continue with some of the work we have undertaken in the last 10 years. It is a wonderful place to live and without the arts North Norfolk would be a much duller place. Paul Smith suit, 34” waist, 38” chest , 30” inside leg. cost £800 new, accept £200. 01692 405663Stainless steel sink with tap and drain kit NEW still in box £40 ono. Our final thanks must go to our funders, without whom, we wouldn’t have been able to undertake all the events and exhibitions for the last 10 years and in particular to Cromer Town Council, Norfolk County Council, and The Geoffrey Watling Charity

who regularly supported us.

We will be closing our online presence very soon and winding up the charity so there’s nothing left to say now except ‘Thank you for all your support and Goodbye!’

Cinema at the Atrium

Hello to all our cinema friends. Now is the time to give you an update that we are still very much here and you will be happy to know that we are making plans in the background on how to reopen the cinema in the Atrium, North Walsham.

North Walsham High School has reopened and initially they will be managing the return of pupils to school, and implementing their Covid protocols. They will then be able to advise us on how and when we can reopen the cinema in line with government guidelines.

With the current situation we won’t be able to start showing films until early 2021 - so still a few months off.

When we do start we will make sure that everything is safe for our audience and volunteers, including a system of pre-booking seats to ensure social distancing.

For those reading this that have not been to the Atrium Cinema North Walsham before, please look out for our advertising and come along and enjoy a film in an amazing cinema, with comfy seats, surround sound, friendly volunteers and a café/bar. We hope to still be able to run a matinee (with free tea and cake) and evening performance each month and our screenings were enjoyed by over 2,000 people last year!

Man ordered to pay back proceeds of crime

A man convicted for supplying cannabis in North Walsham has been ordered to pay back £80,000 from the proceeds of his crimes.

Aiden Hyland, aged 25 and of Chapel Road in Paston, appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Friday 25 September where he was sentenced to an 18-month Community Order and 150 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply cannabis at an earlier hearing. Hyland was also ordered to pay £80,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

We will keep you updated and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Best wishes, The Atrium Cinema Group www.atriumcinema.co.uk You can follow us on Facebook atriumcinemaNW Email atriumcinemanw@gmail.com

!!

The court heard how Hylands was arrested on Saturday 10 February 2018 after officers executed a warrant at an address on Kings Arms Street in North Walsham and seized drug paraphernalia and cash.

01692 404050

A number of mobile phones were also found which contained various messaged relating to the supply and sale of cannabis.

Sergeant Toby Gosdon said: "I am pleased Hylands has been ordered to return the money he made through his criminality. This case demonstrates that crime does not pay, and officers will continue to ensure those engaged in illegal activity are stripped of the very thing that motivates them to commit their crimes.”

Autumn Planting

Autumn is nearly upon us and we need to be thinking about next year in terms of what to plant now and what we would like to grow. Bulbs are the main topic of this article especially spring bulbs such as: Galanthus (Snowdrops), Crocus, Daffodils, Hyacinth, Iris, Narcissus and Tulips. Bulbs are very versatile and can be planted in open ground, under grass and in containers.

I am going to focus on container planting; however, the general rules apply to all planting areas. Bulbs should be planted in free draining

multi-purpose compost, with one part of grit to three parts compost to aid drainage. If they sit in an area of high moisture the chances are, they will rot.

With containers we want to get the longest flowering show possible and one way to achieve this is through lasagne planting or layering of the bulbs. So, we need to know how deep the bulbs need to be planted and what time of spring they will emerge. Generally speaking, snowdrops and crocus are the first to appear and are also the smaller bulbs, then come daffodils, narcissus, followed by tulips.

The rule of thumb for the planting depth is three times the height of the bulb, so in the case of tulips 5cm or 2inches, they will be planted 15cm or 6inches deep, they also need to be planted one bulb width apart, with the pointed end upwards. This can be your first and deepest layer. Cover with compost and follow on top with a layer of daffodils or narcissus, following the same rules. As you are nearing the top cover again and plant, crocus, snowdrops which will be the first to flower and the shallowest planting.

As a result you have three layers and several weeks of colour, the container needs to be watered regularly, and if you have problems with mice or squirrels cover the top of the container with wire mesh until the bulbs

appear. As you have planted containers, so you have the ability to move them around your property, so they benefit from the sun.

To promote good flowering next year, feed the bulbs every seven to ten days with a high potassium fertiliser such as a liquid tomato feed. Begin feeding as soon as shoots appear, and stop feeding once the foliage starts to die down at the end of the season

You could also think about other plants to put in the top of the containers which will give you further colour and interest, winter pansies, violas, cyclamen, dwarf wallflowers and heucheras.

On the allotment, now is the time to plant winter onions and garlic followed in mid-October with a winter sowing of broad beans that will stand through the winter and give you a head start in the spring. Chris Wright

As an Accredited Gold Standard Rabbit Friendly Practice we are proud to be able to treat even the most complicated of cases but sometimes these cases can be particularly challenging!

Beautiful six-year-old Lola (a Netherland Dwarf mix rabbit) was referred to us for a second opinion as she had been suffering from repeated episodes of gastrointestinal stasis (when the intestines stop moving and the rabbit stops eating and passing faeces). These episodes can be potentially life threatening so it is important to find the underlying cause. Our team performed a thorough examination and realised that Lola’s eyes were bulging slightly more than normal. In rabbits this can be a sign of a problem within their chest so our team performed x-rays to assess Lola’s chest and thex-rays showed there was a large “mass” within Lola’s chest which was compressing her lungs and preventing them expanding properly.

recurring in the future. After intensive nursing within our dedicated exotic pet hospital ward, Lola recovered well and began eating and passing faeces and was discharged to continue her recovery at home. Rabbits are able to hide the signs of disease well so it is always worth getting them checked thoroughly.

Duncan Baker’s September Newsletter

To further assess this mass and find out its origin and assess any potential treatment options a CT scan was performed. This scan showed the mass within Lola’s chest was actually her stomach, pancreas, right kidney and part of her liver. These organs had travelled through a diaphragmatic hernia (a hole within the diaphragm which should separate the chest and abdomen) and the organs were compressing Lola’s lungs reducing her ability to breath. At the same time the lungs and heart were compressing Lola’s stomach and abdominal organs which meant she couldn’t eat or digest food properly hence the episodes of gastrointestinal stasis.

Dear all, I hope you have enjoyed the summer and fine weather throughout most of August. Parliament has now resumed for what is sure to be an extremely busy few months back in Westminster. As I look forward to that, I want to reflect on what has been my first Summer Recess and just how enjoyable it has been to spend the majority of my time touring the constituency, meeting so many of you. There has been no sitting about and on my first day back home, I started a 54-location tour working from East to West across the constituency. From the brilliant sunshine in Horsey, Hickling and Ludham on day 1 we finished in the pouring rain in Langham, Holkham and Wells six weeks later! Being active, approachable, and visible in the community are some of my principle aims as your MP and as I made my way around the constituency, the reception from everyone I met was hugely welcoming. I have been truly humbled by the warmth from so many residents who took the time to meet me and ask me questions, and it’s been a pleasure solving so many problems that people wanted to share. Whether helping constituents with cancelled operations or taking up highway issues in many of our villages, the tour has been a great success and it has been enormously rewarding to help so many. From listening to many stories of people overcoming such difficult situations throughout the pandemic, to meeting entrepreneurs who’ve started businesses in their garages during lockdown, not a day went by when I wasn’t amazed by the spirit and communities that define North Norfolk. It has been an incredibly busy summer with a huge influx of visitors to our area. This has been a lifeline to our local economy, and North Norfolk alone has enjoyed 203,000 discounted meals through the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, benefiting local businesses by over £1m. Despite such a busy period we have continued to see remarkably low infection rates. As our children return to school, having missed seeing their friends for many months, I wish them all a safe return. In the run-up to Christmas, I will be visiting more towns and villages around the constituency, offering surgeries, and supporting residents, charities, and businesses in any way I can.

Luckily for Lola, Toll Barn Vets is one of only a handful of East Anglia veterinary centres with an in-house CT scanner and also the facilities and skills to perform an intricate surgery to save Lola’s life. Our team of vets and nurses had to use specialised anaesthetic techniques to keep Lola asleep and pain free as the hole in her diaphragm meant she was unable to breath for herself whilst under general anaesthetic. Our surgeon then used microsurgical equipment to locate Lola’s stomach, liver, pancreas and kidney within her chest and delicately relocate them to their “normal” position within her abdomen. Our team then carefully repaired the hole (hernia) in her diaphragm to prevent the problem

The Prom must go on!

After incredibly challenging beginnings to the year it seemed that teenagers missed out on so much more than their predecessors. Namely the Year 11 school leavers who were literally at school one minute and gone the next as in the case of Yr 11s from Cromer Academy. Covid-19 struck, and their worlds turned upside down without so much like a single GCSE to take after years of hard work.

There was no proper last day and no chance of a Prom like so many before them. They were at school one day and gone the next. It was just so sad that their prom dresses were just left to hang redundant in wardrobes! It really seemed like a distant pipe dream with so many rules, regulations and red tape but when mums are determined to make

something happen for deserving teenagers there’s not much that can stop them!

With the help and support of Zaranne Newland former Head Girl at Cromer Academy and many friends, family and local businesses we got together to make this happen. The Cross Keys in Dilham allowed us to use their beer garden to put on the Prom the kids deserved, cooking pizzas on their outdoor pizza oven.

We gave all students presents for something to keep and remember the evening, awards were given out on the evening voted by the students, extra presents were bought by a Yr10 student from Cromer, Mia Newland missed out on her trip to Africa so decided the money she had raised to buy gifts when visiting Africa, she would use it to treat

the Yr11s as she felt that they deserved it. A raffle was also organized so every student won something with thanks to local businesses donating prizes.

Donation from: Jamie’s Accident Repair Centre, Carrie Catchpole @ Boots, The Cross Keys, Wills Fish & Chips, Benedicts Cove, Laura Smith @ Gift Garage, Poppy Amber Morgan Shipp, Ginny Greenfield, Tracey Chapman, Mia Newland, Simon Spence, Jade Ball, Lydon Swift @ The Ship Inn Weybourne, Yvonne & Peter Hardingham, Martika & Josh Smith, Robert Scammell, Cathy Raymond, Zoe Chattenton, Jane Quantrill.

Sweet Treats Raise Funds for Macmillan A Macmillan Cake Day was held on 11th September, by Pentaco Constuction, the company building the new Macmillan Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital. Delicious cakes and bakes were on sale, all socially distanced of course, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. £1370 was raised and a few inches added to waistlines too, but all in a very good cause.

WE

It has been lovely to welcome visitors to the Museum again, and onto Falcon and Marsh Harrier, our two trip boats. The Museum has been busy and our staff and volunteers have been working hard to ensure every visit is safe and enjoyable.

At the time of writing, the Museum is open on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday each week, 11am to 3pm, with one of our boats running each of those days. Full details and the facility to book online are on our website. Phone bookings are possible in advance and on the day of the visit too. Of course, the situation may change, so please do check our website, or give us a call before arranging your visit.

Want to know how much your house is worth? The market is buoyant and there are lots of buyers out there. Plus, there’s the added incentive of a stamp duty holiday*.

We hope to still run our Family Hallowe’en Trail during Half Term, with spooky prizes for those brave enough to locate the Museum’s ghosts! Our special Holidays Exhibition is also popular with plenty of happy memories to enjoy. The Museum will close for 2020 on Sunday 1st November.

All at the Museum wish you a happy autumn, and here’s hoping for a safe 2021!

Charity Day Proves a Success for over 40 Years

Mannington Estate held their annual Charity Day this September, Lord and Lady Walpole were pleased not to break their 40-year record of holding this event! Despite Covid concerns around 500 people visited the gardens on 6th September and supported the local charities attending. Funds of around £3,700 were raised, this was made up from entrance fees and tearooms and will go to the local churches of Erpingham, Alby and Thwaite. Other charities ran their usual stands with good results. This year they were joined by a group of local craftspeople with ceramics, silver, woodwork and more.

Book a valuation and open the door to a new possibility.

Give the county team a call…

Mannington are asking for any visitors this year who may have taken photographs of wildlife (Kingfisher & Otters most spectacularly) but all gardens and grounds – we’d love to see your pictures.

According to RIGHTMOVE the biggest spike in property searches is on BOXING DAY.

We moved home

It has been a rather eventful couple of weeks here at the vets. We have moved practice for the first time in over 50 years, from our old site on Yarmouth Road to Norwich Road a short distance away. This move has offered us some fantastic opportunities to improve our facilities for both patients and clients. We have better access, more car parking and also much more space, which is proving very helpful in our efforts to guard against Covid-19. Once we start bringing people back into the surgery over the coming weeks we can offer separate cat and dog waiting areas, with plenty of space to socially distance in each. For the patients themselves we have specialist non slip flooring,

hygiene clad walls and an air circulating system to minimise disease transmission and ensure fresh air for clients and staff as well, thereby reducing the risk of viral spread. There are separate cat, dog and isolation wards and specialist theatres designed for sterility and orthopaedic and keyhole surgery. We have a dental suite and an imaging suite with digital x-ray, ultrasonography and a variety of endoscopes. The move from one site to another went as well as we could have hoped and within a week we are back operating at full capacity and enjoying our new surroundings. We have already welcomed cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes and even a Snowy owl through the door. One of the things we are still seeing are allergies, particularly harvest mite allergies in cats. Perhaps due to some of the lengthy dry

periods we have had some severe cases this year and so just wanted to share a photograph of a case and let you know what to look out for. These tiny, orange mites tend to congregate around the ears and head of outdoor cats, through direct irritation and also the animals scratching themselves they lead to a classic pattern of scabs and soreness around the base of the ears, and often under the neck. They can be discouraged using Frontline Spray, but once these signs manifest themselves, most cats will need a trip to the vets for some anti-inflammatories. Fortunately, the risk dies down with the cooler weather, but it is certainly something to monitor for into autumn and when the weather warms up next year.

It was with much regret and sadness of all our members and supporters, that we had to cancel the Battle of Britain Memorial that we had planned to take place at our War Memorial on Tuesday 15th September, 2020 at 10.45.a.m., paying tribute to 74 and 242 Aquadrons that took off from RAF Coltishall, remembering those who did not return, and indeed all the very brave airman to whom we say a 'Huge Thank You' to. It is hoped that Covid-19 will not intervene when we hope to re-schedule this event next year.

We do, indeed, face challenging times ahead, as at the moment, we are unable to hold our Branch Meetings, but please keep an eye out for announcements regarding the re-commencement of these through this paper, our Facebook, or telephone Lorna on 01263 579633. We are maintaining good communications with everyone, and we do welcome new members.

In the meantime, from everyone here at Northrepps RBL keep safe and well.

As anyone who follows Trevor’s work will know, it evolves and adapts to what he's seeing and feeling at any given time. The work is always familiar but certain subjects call for something 'more'... and this is obvious in these latest paintings.

After experiencing the breathtaking scenery of Iceland in 2019, Trevor's looked back at places he's visited over the years and produced a body of work that captures these varied and often dramatic landscapes. We don't want to give too much away, but the Peak District and Lake District will be featured as well as local scenes and some from further afield too. Things will be a little different with this exhibition, due to the Coronavirus restrictions, so we're putting a two-fold plan in place.

Will your home make it fit for the future by Emma Langley, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Property is often the most valuable asset in someone’s estate when they die. It is also a home and may need to remain a home for a surviving partner, spouse, or children. It can be difficult to balance the need to provide a home for loved ones or dependants with ensuring your assets ultimately pass to those who you wish to provide for.

Types of Property Ownership

There are many different ways in which a property can be held. This could be in your sole name, or jointly with others, or even in a Trust.

Property in joint names is held as either “Joint Tenants” or “Tenants in Common”. If held as Joint Tenants, the property will pass to the surviving owner on death, regardless of the terms of your Will. The surviving owner of the property is then free to do as they wish with the property.

If held as Tenants in Common, each owner has a separate and distinct share and therefore their share can be left in accordance with the terms of their Will.

Blended Families

If you own a property with a partner and have children from a previous relationship,

you may want your children to benefit from your assets, but would not want your partner to be made homeless in the event of your death.

Your Will can be structured to create a Trust on your death, ensuring your partner can remain living in the property for a period or the rest of their life. When that right ends or on your partner’s death, your share of the property then passes to the beneficiaries named in your Will. Your partner’s share would pass in accordance with the terms of their own Will.

This arrangement can be beneficial should your partner need care after your death, as only their share of the property is available to fund the care fees with your share protected for your beneficiaries. Careful thought needs to be given to how payment of outgoings, mortgages and Inheritance Tax are to be funded. Such an arrangement is often not possible if equity release is either in place or likely to be required.

Lifetime Gifting

Gifting a property during your lifetime to an individual or into a Trust may seem appealing for both Inheritance Tax and Care fee planning. However, such a gift also

means relinquishing control of your asset and can risk your security.

The law in relation to gifting property, property Trusts, Inheritance Tax and care fees is extremely complex and depends on your individual circumstances. Advice is therefore strongly recommended to ensure your wishes are achieved effectively, taking into account your individual circumstances.

If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Emma on 01328 850735. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01692 503 081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Tropical Heaven

Every so often, a recipe occurs that is so ridiculously easy, but so sublimely delicious, that you just know it is going to be a favourite forever. Whilst experimenting with pudding recipes for the café, this happy accident materialised, and we have served it several times this year to much delight!

These tins of mango puree are what I would call a ‘hero’ ingredient, they are just so versatile and useful. I make a point of always having them on the shelf. This is also great even without the fresh fruit, which just adds extra nutritional goodness and flavour, but the puree is a wonderful flavour all on its own, and you can even make a super quick version by just mixing the puree into some really good, thick Greek yogurt.

This is the ultimate version here, a super luxurious and creamy pudding, that cleanses the palate and will have everyone coming back for more. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

Mango and Pineapple Fool Serves 6

1 tin mango puree (available in Tesco) 1 large tub extra thick Greek Yoghurt 1 carton thick custard 1 fresh ripe mango, peeled and cut into chunks

1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks

Mix the mango into the custard in a large bowl.

Thoroughly whisk in the Greek yoghurt, leaving no lumps.

Cover and place in the fridge to chill.

Chill the fruit separately.

When ready to serve, fold the fruit into the fool, and serve with biscotti or amaretti biscuits. Carolyn Burn

TARTE TATIN

Autumn is here with a bang and of course fruit in all forms are coming off the trees (a little quicker than preferred after the recent storms!) The outdoor seating on the conker lawns wasn’t the place to be as seventy-mile-per-hour winds turned our ripening horse chestnuts into very effective munitions, which left access to the garden last Friday night quite an ordeal.

However John’s apples survived and are now sitting happily in the kitchen waiting for the chefs to incorporate them into menus. In fact there were so many that all the staff have been carrying home bags and boxes of cookers and eaters to distribute to friends and family.

This is actually a Raymond Blanc all-time classic recipe that we have used several times over the years; often serving in individual portions perfect for our restaurant. It’s a great dish and I’m sure it will feature again in the forthcoming months.

Do come and see us for dinner – we start our a la carte at 5pm so there’s plenty of time to adhere to the 10pm curfew! 01263 821463

Ingredients 300g all-butter puff pastry Plain flour, for dusting 6 dessert apples (about 900g/2lb), such as Braeburn, Cox’s Orange Pippin or Adam’s Pearmain 100g golden caster sugar

85g unsalted butter (60g/21/4oz chilled and diced, 25g/1oz melted) Crème fraîche (full-fat please!) or high-quality vanilla ice cream, to serve

Method 1. Roll the pastry to a 3mm-thick round on a lightly floured surface and cut a 24cm circle, using a plate as a guide. Lightly prick all over with a fork, place on a baking sheet, then cover and freeze while preparing the apples. 2. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Peel, quarter and core the apples. Put the sugar in a flameproof 20cm ceramic tatin dish or a 20cm ovenproof heavy-based frying pan and place over a medium-high heat. Cook the sugar for 5-7 mins to a dark amber caramel syrup that’s starting to smoke, then turn off the heat and stir in the 60g diced chilled butter. 3. To assemble the tarte tatin, arrange the apple quarters very tightly in a circle around the edge of the dish first, rounded-side down, then fill in the middle in a similar fashion. Gently press with your hands to ensure there are no gaps. Brush the fruit with the melted butter. 4. Bake in the oven for 30 mins, then remove and place the disc of frozen puff pastry on top – it will quickly defrost. Tuck the edges down the inside of the dish and, with a knife, prick a few holes in the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake for a further 40-45 mins until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.

5. Allow to cool to room temperature for 1 hr before running a knife around the edge of the dish and inverting it onto a large serving plate that is deep enough to contain the juices. Serve with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, congratulations to Westover Vets on the move to their impressive new premises. Some of our fosterers have already visited and were delighted to be able to take advantage of the new dedicated cat waiting area. We look forward to many more years using their services and I hope it’s not too long before I have the opportunity to see them myself. Another busy month on the re-homing front with 12 kittens and 4 adult cats leaving for new homes over one weekend. Four of our longer-term residents, Pearl, Milton, Maya and Mora will also be leaving for their homes by the time you read this as will Jasper, Willis and Mr and Mrs Bumble. The little kitten mentioned previously as being offered for sale on Gumtree has had problems with one of her legs which has not been resolved (this could be as a result of inbreeding). She is one of the 12 recently rehomed and should she need surgery on her leg the branch will be taking care of this. We believe she is better off being in a home with a very experienced cat owner, rather than sitting in a pen to see if she does need surgery. Kittens Abby and Bella will also leave once they have had their health check and first vaccinations. Although we have some new residents this has left us with a few empty pens, again we expect them to be filled by the time you read this. We are so grateful to Lesley who has accommodated some of the cats at her cattery in Hemsby during the time when our pens were full, and we were not able to take new cats into care. When cats are re-homed it creates lots of paperwork, new owners also must be contacted to check on how the cats and kittens are getting on and also to check on their names before recording their microchips. At this stage we also make sure the owners are informed if the second vaccination needs to be arranged with our vets and the neutering vouchers are issued to vets for kittens not old enough to be neutered before they leave us. Adoption Forms are sent to Pet Plan to put in place the 4 weeks free insurance that

goes with every cat we re-home and the new family are advised to contact the company within this period should they wish to continue the insurance. The information relating to the cats (including any health-related history) is also recorded on records shared with Head Office. Sadly because of the present situation we will not be able to hold our Christmas Sale this year. However, we will be ordering calendars and diaries which can be obtained by either leaving a message on the cats phone, emailing enquiries@northwalsham.cats.org.uk or sending a message to our Facebook page. We will not be ordering the new Christmas Cards but some of last years are available at reduced prices for anyone interested. Although we have not been able to fund-raise, people have been very generous, and we have also been informed that we will be receiving a generous bequest from one of our long term supporters who has recently died. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Hedgehog Haven

This is Stumpy, he is a 100grm hoglet, unfortunately both his back legs are deformed, this could have happened in the nest as sometimes siblings will nibble the others feet, he can move quite quickly & is gaining weight my only concern is that he had a nasty injury on his back which had fly strike which some had already hatched into maggots I'm hoping I’ve caught them in time before any internal damage is done. Baca use of the Covid pandemic I have not been able to do any fundraising, so therefore I have had printed a Hedgehog Haven calendar 2021 which feature some of the hogs which were in my care during 2019, if you would like to purchase one you will find them at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Road from this coming weekend, all profits will help towards the cost of the hedgehogs food and medication. Many Thanks.

Rugby is now at the fourth stage of the RFU’s “Return to Rugby Roadmap”, meaning training can take place in larger groups than hitherto and limited contact work is allowed. Normal matches cannot take place until stage six, and that will not be reached until at least four weeks after stage five (full contact training allowed) has commenced. Stage six though looks a long way off with the pandemic worsening and the Rugby Football Union have already decided the League season won’t begin until January at the earliest.

The Minis, Valkyries & most Youth teams were able to start on Sunday mornings in early September as usual. Covid restrictions mean though some age groups have to train at other times: the Under 13s

on Saturdays (1600), Under 16s Wednesdays (1830) and Colts Thursdays (1900). “It’s been challenging but we’re confident the environment is safe and our offer enjoyable” said Alix Stimpson, Youth & Minis Director. “Our Coaches are good at putting together enjoyable routines and games, as the Summer Camps (pictured) evidenced.”

The Camps were judged a great success by Participants, Parents and Coaches. Over 120 youngsters, 20% of them Girls, attended the five age based three-day events. Director of Rugby James Knight commented, “we showed it’s possible to have lots of fun doing rugby related activities, despite the restrictions.” He stressed the focus on rugby’s values – teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship – building skills and attitudes that are of lifelong value. Inspirational golfer Molly remembered at seaside club she loved Evergreen golfer Molly Johns is being remembered at her home club – every time players walk to the first tee.

Molly played at Mundesley for more than 50 years, from 1967 until just a few months before her death in June 2019 aged 90. A former club ladies captain, she was still winning competitions in her mid-80s, and was also well-known across the county spending 26 years running the Norfolk Ladies Golf Captains Society, where she was also president.

Molly, from Thorpe, was also a social member at Eaton Golf Club where her son Peter is general manager. Mrs Johns’ parents used to live at Happisburgh, and several of the family

played at Mundesley, where she commuted twice a week for her golf. The course is also poignant because her husband Tom sadly died there while playing the 18th hole aged 59 in 1986. The couple were both captains in the same year, 1978.

Friends and fellow golfers, including three former county presidents, gathered at Mundesley this week to honour her by naming the newly-resurfaced pathway from the clubhouse car park to the first tee as Molly’s Way, paid for by a gift to the club from Mrs Johns’ will. Son Peter said: “Mum loved her golf, and lot of it was down to the friendships she made at Mundesley. She was a formidable lady, so it is very apt the path is

called Molly’s Way – because it was either Molly’s way or no way.”

At the opening ceremony, ladies’ captain Jenny Smith recalled an “amazing lady” who was bubbly company and inspired younger golfers, winning countless competitions at club and county level, and who loved telling a story. There were also short speeches from club president Mike Foster and men’s captain Pat Kerrison.

Treat your skin this autumn. Cost effective, skin rejuvenation treatment Pigmentation can have a number of causes such as excessive sun special offer packages are available

You are still active and you feel great. But, the effects of time, sun, wind and toxins in the air have taken their toll on the appearance of your skin. It’s not as smooth as it was when you were younger. Now there are effective procedures available to reverse these changes. We have created special cost effective packages to look after your skin during the cooler months. We have not one but three packages to suit every budget. What is common with these combinations is a pampering touch, enjoyment, some ‘me time’ and results.

1. Silver package includes diamond microdermabrasion and chemical peels. These are fantastic treatments to polish and brighten the skin. Not only this exfoliates and polishes your skin, it also stimulates collagen synthesis in the deeper layers to improve the overall skin quality. Microdermabrasion is then followed by LED treatment with a red light to further improve and brighten your skin to give it a nice glow and a plump and fresher feel and look. 2. Gold package includes No needle mesotherapy in addition to the above treatments. We use a computerised CO2 laser to open precise micro-channels in the skin in a painless manner. These are then used for infusion of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and minerals in a painless, no needle way. This is ultimate natural skin rejuvenation technique. 3. Fractional laser toning/ clear lift/ Laser genesis skin toning. A quick no-downtime lunchtime laser procedure for skin toning and brightening. Includes diamond microdermabrasion followed by q switched laser or laser genesis procedure. If you always wanted a laser skin treatment but worry about cost and recovery, this one is for you.

exposure, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma. Melasma is a commonly acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation. Treatment of melasma has been traditionally centered on the use of daily sunscreen and topical bleaching creams or chemical peels.

A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.
