Council awarded funding to regenerate historic North Walsham town centre

North Norfolk District Council has secured a double funding boost from Historic England and the Government through the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership to finance an exciting major regeneration project for North Walsham town centre.

The council has received an award of £975,000 from Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme to renew and revive North Walsham’s historic town centre.

And additional funding to support this game-changing project for the town has come from the Government through the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, who have this week awarded ÂŁ1.17m as part of the Getting Building Fund.

Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme is designed to secure lasting improvements for towns’ historic cores and the communities who use them.

Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, commented: “High streets lie at the heart of communities but are under increasing pressure, which has been further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This scheme in North Walsham will enhance the town’s historic character, making it a more attractive, safe and vibrant place for people to live, work and visit, ensuring the town’s long-term economic, social and environmental viability.

“The programme of works includes improvements to public spaces and passageways, better signage and repair and restoration of heritage buildings, all of which should help to provide a real lift to North Walsham, improving the experience enjoyed by residents and visitors to the town and provide an uplift in footfall to boost businesses. There are particular opportunities for local retail and service businesses as we respond to the COVID

situation as many people realise the benefit of shopping more locally and supporting local businesses, many of which have adapted their offer during COVID to meet the needs of their immediate communities”

The key features of the High Street Heritage Action Zone scheme will include: • Town centre “re-stitching” – Improved connectivity and access through the town via lokes and gateways including improved signage and heritage interpretation.

• Building Improvement scheme – To support improvements to current buildings and business premises and support new business or uses of vacant spaces.

• Market Place Public Realm improvement – Making the Market Place more accessible and attractive for users.

• The Cedars (old council offices) repair and restoration of this Grade II listed building.

The successful programme was devised with the support of a strong local partnership

between North Norfolk District Council, North Walsham Town Council and Regenerate North Walsham (RNW CIC) and community consultation and engagement will continue throughout the programme.

Alongside these physical works there will also be a range of community-led programming to bring the town’s rich history to life. It will celebrate the town’s incredible heritage and showcase its stories as well.

These include its role in the final battle of the 1381 Peasant’s Revolt and fascinating historical insights into the long-rumoured tunnels and cellars hidden beneath the historic town centre streets.

Alongside the awarded funding The National Lottery Heritage Fund is partnering with Historic England and investing £3 million in a complementary Cultural Programme. A consortium of local cultural groups and community organisations, including the North Walsham Heritage Group and Paston College, is being formed to create an exciting range of cultural programming to run alongside the scheme.

Stay on Possession Proceedings Extended Again

Landlord & Tenant Update:

The Government brought in emergency legislation on 27 March 2020 preventing Landlords from obtaining possession of properties or enforcing possession orders already obtained for a period of 90 days. We previously reported on this in June 2020 when the Government announced it would extend the stay for a further eight weeks until 23 August 2020.

Whilst the stay was welcomed by millions of Tenants throughout the UK, Landlords were unable to obtain possession of their premises regardless of the type or severity of a Tenant’s breaches. However, we recently reported that from 24 August 2020 Landlords would be able to continue with existing proceedings or commence fresh possession proceedings against their Tenants.

On Friday 21 August 2020, just three days before the new legislation was due to come into effect, the Government made a complete U-turn and has extended the stay on possession proceedings for a further four weeks, until 20 September 2020. Therefore, Landlords will not be able to continue with existing proceedings or commence fresh possession proceedings until further notice.

The Government’s last minute change has created frustration amongst Landlords throughout the UK. Whilst several issues with Tenants have arisen due to the pandemic, Landlords are now left in a position where they are unable to take any action to deal with issues that are not related to Covid-19.

The additional extension is of course welcomed by Tenants who are no longer subject to an immediate threat of eviction during these uncertain times. However, this extension is only a temporary measure. The Government will now be required to use these additional four weeks to create robust plans and consider how it can achieve a balance between the interests of both Landlords and Tenants to gradually bring the country back to some form of ‘normality’ during the exceptional circumstances that the nation finds itself in.

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread.

we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.”

If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household.

It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms.

Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.”

But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them.

They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves.

Local Outbreak Control Plan

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus.

If a friend or relative of yours has spent time in a residential or nursing home during the pandemic, Healthwatch Norfolk want to know how you have coped with the changes to understand what worked well and what could have been improved.

The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support.

Feedback will be collected anonymously and fed back to Norfolk County Council, who want to learn by listening to the public so that care homes can be safer, more resilient, and communicate better with families in the future.

Hospital charity to hold Service of Remembrance

A virtual Service of Remembrance will be held for families, friends and carers of people who have died at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals.

The event will be available from Saturday, September 12 and people are invited to get in touch if they would like a loved one’s name or favourite poem to be read out at the service.

The service has been organised by the N&N Hospitals Charity and will be led by NNUH Lead Chaplain Adrian Woodhouse and Chief Nurse Professor Nancy Fontaine in the hospital chapel with members of the public invited to

watch from home.

N&N Hospitals Charity Head of Fundraising Louise Cook said: “We already hold an annual Remembrance Service for babies and children but this is the first time we have held such a service to include adults.

“This will be an all-inclusive event and an opportunity for people to remember their loved ones who have passed away at the hospital, not just in the past year but at any time.”

Opportunity to recognise amazing hospital staff

Patients from across Norfolk are being asked to nominate the health professional or hospital team who have made exceptional efforts over the last few months during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The nominations are for the Patient Choice Hero award at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Cromer Hospital. The award will enable the hospitals to recognise those staff who have provided exceptional patient care, kindness or outstanding professional expertise.

Patients can nominate any nurse, doctor, midwife, therapist, receptionist or other member of staff who looked after them during an outpatient visit, day treatment or hospital stay.

Police shut down unlicensed music event, Ashwicken

A man has been arrested and sound equipment seized after police shut down an illegal gathering near King’s Lynn earlier this morning (Sunday 23 August 2020).

David White, NNUH Chairman, said: “We want to recognise the outstanding efforts of our exceptional staff who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep our patients safe and well during these unprecedented times.

“I am amazed and humbled by the hard work carried out at all levels

Police were called shortly after 1am by a member of the public reporting a suspected rave at Ashwicken. Officers arrived on scene and discovered approximately 70 people on land near to Bawsey Pitts in the early stages of an unlicensed music event.

Roads accessing the area were blocked by police cars before officers went on to the site at about 3am. The music was switched off at police direction at 3.15am.

Generators and sound equipment were seized and a 31-year-old man from King’s Lynn was arrested on suspicion of organising the event.

The man was taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre where he remains in custody and will be questioned.

Assistant Chief Constable Julie Wvendth said: "These events are not only illegal and unsafe, they also cause unnecessary damage and disruption. Where we can prevent, disrupt or stop a rave taking place, we will do everything within our power to do this, providing it’s in the best interests of all concerned.”

Earlier this month, the government announced tougher measures targeting the most serious breaches of the public health regulations introduced to help stop the spread of coronavirus. New legislation, which comes into effect on Friday (28 August), will see organisers of illegal raves face a £10,000 fine while those who attend will be liable for £100 fines.

ACC Wvendth added: "Coronavirus is still with us and continues to be a real threat. Young people are not immune to this threat and we would urge them to think twice before attending such events which are unsafe and carry a significant risk of transmitting the virus.

"The key to stopping these events is early intelligence and information from our communities. We’re grateful to the local resident who called police after hearing loud music and noticed several cars heading to the area. The prompt call meant we were able to respond effectively and stop the event before more people were able to attend.”

Overwhelming support for emergency services sunflower campaign

Sunflowers have been blooming across Norfolk after the emergency services sunflower campaign received overwhelming support.

Working together with the East of England Ambulance Service, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and other public service partners, Norfolk Police launched the Sunflower campaign to spread some positivity and happiness during lockdown.

To complement the NHS Rainbow campaign and to demonstrate how the blue light services and other agencies have been working together to help protect and support the NHS during the Covid-19 crisis, communities were encouraged to display sunflower creations in their windows.

Homes which were seen displaying their sunflowers by officers whilst on patrol received sunflower seeds through the door which could be planted.

Tailormade toolkit launched to support businesses across Norfolk to stay open and stay safe A tailormade toolkit has been launched by Norfolk County Council to support businesses of all sizes and across all sectors to play their part in operating as safely as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The kit, which has been developed by Norfolk’s Public Health team and representatives from local businesses, focuses on NHS Test and Trace and the implications for employers including: workplaces, restaurants, pubs and cafes, places of worship, leisure and entertainment facilities, hairdressers, salons, barbers and public venues.

NHS Test and Trace plays a crucial role in minimising the risk of further outbreaks of coronavirus. The kit, which is free and easy to use and download, contains:

• An update on social distancing guidelines • Tips for employers • A guide to NHS Test and Trace • What to do in the event of an outbreak on your premises, including how to report it • Professionally designed printable posters for staff and customers for use in premises in a variety of languages • Resources for workers • Posters for restaurant and pubs • Grid and guidance for taking customer details for test and trace tracking • A sign-up facility for further updates as additional guidance, posters and leaflets become available or are required

It follows an earlier business toolkit issued in May which gives general advice about how employers can play their part by adopting measures appropriate to their premises and staffing to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

Also published earlier this month was a kit aimed specifically for tourism businesses and accommodation providers.

This contains: • A tourism information leaflet • Information posters for guests and tourists • A process for handling guests with suspected coronavirus

Mannington Estate – Gardens Open into September

Mannington will be keeping it’s gardens open to the public on Sundays throughout September, from 11-5pm. These will kick off with their annual Charity Day on 6th September, something Mannington have held for over 40 years to support local charities. On the 27th September they will open with all proceeds going to the National Garden Schemes chosen charities. Please see the website for the latest on both events. September at the Museum of the Broads

On 2nd August, the Museum re-opened to visitors.

It was lovely to welcome people back onto the site and onto both boats for the first time in 2020. In accordance with Government regulations, the numbers are limited, people are being asked to wear face coverings and keep their distance, and boat passengers are only seated within their family group or social bubble. Although things may look a bit different, the Museum is still bringing the stories of the Broads alive!

LANGHAM DOME NEWS www.langhamdome.org

The Dome has remained closed for the months of April to July inclusive. Assessing the latest government advice we still have to decide whether we can open sometime August, and then in September and October. The Dome is very small and one issue is that even if we are allowed to open, but the 1+M social distancing and sanitisation of everything a visitor may have touched rules are maintained we would be limited to only 6-8 visitors at a time to the Dome itself. A possible solution, which we think could meet all the rules and keep our staff and visitors safe, may be to pre-book visits eg in one to one and a half hour slots.

The website (link above) is regularly updated, so please refer to that for the latest Dome news and before making a wasted journey expecting to find us open or only opening against bookings.

Preparatory work has been completed for mounting of the full size replica Spitfire outside the Dome - with the foundations and

mounting now installed as you can see from this picture. If all goes well it should have the Spitfire mounted on it in August, with CCTV security coverage. However the formal unveiling and dedication ceremony will only take place once the Dome can re-open normally - hopefully in April 2021.

Whether we are fully open or not we are still planning to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain by holding the B of B Prize Draw in the Dome grounds at noon on 13 September. With the shut down the Draw is now a very important part of our fund raising for this year with great prizes that include a Tiger Moth flight from Langham and also a helicopter flight, as well as a flight simulator experience and a £50.00 cash prize. We have also been donated a large framed Spitfire print painted by artist Barrie Clark - a very appropriate prize for this anniversary. There are a host of other prizes. If you have not yet bought Draw tickets please come along at any

time after 1030 on 13th September to buy them on the day. However we hope that Lynx readers will support us by purchasing tickets in advance and paying by BACS or cheque, either on-line by contacting admin@langhamome.org (please e-mail initially and we will get back to you with payment and ticket details), or by telephone to John Blakeley on 01263 861008.

Visitors to the Dome can see exhibits and films which relate to the various Squadrons that served at Langham during WW2.

Lanham Dome Spitfire Memorial

As you know from your previous articles, we have been fund raising and planning for some time to place a replica Spitfire as a memorial on a plinth outside the Dome, This was originally planned for earlier this year, but the work on strengthening the aircraft and the external mounting infrastructure was delayed by COVID 19. However, yesterday it all came together and as you can see from the attached pictures (taken by me and you are welcome to use them – more are available) we now have a very impressive Spitfire replica on display. We will be taking it down in late October for winter storage and the formal dedication ceremony as a memorial to the pilot, Richard Younghusband, who was killed in 1953 flying a Spitfire from RAF Langham is being planned for Spring 2021.

Keeping your pet smiling!

We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over 3 years old.

Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.

Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and

immunosuppression, and should be discussed with your vet. Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect Before large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture. Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.

When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe. Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These

Raised beds are a great way of growing a wide range of plants and are particularly popular for growing fruit and vegetables

However, if you only have a small area then you can adapt them for whatever you would like to grow. They can also be raised higher for people who need to work at waist height.

The beds can be made out of a wide range of materials from wooden planks, sleepers, bricks, concrete blocks anything that is robust enough to hold a large amount of soil.

If you are thinking of using wood then this needs to be tanalised, to help prevent rotting. Be aware that the old railway sleepers may have formaldehyde in them, which will leech out into the soil.

I first came across raised beds when the RHS promoted the Three Metre Square bed, this was something I adopted for schools with restricted space.

The size of all raised beds needs to be no more than 1.2 metres wide, in order that you can work them from both sides. They can be as long as you would like them, also as deep as you require them. Some people use condemned scaffold boards.

The advantages of raised beds are that you do not have to dig them every time. They improve soil drainage so you can work on them anytime of the year, they create more warmth and you can bring in new soil if yours is unworkable. They are easier to maintain, concentrating soil improvement by adding mulch, manure and compost. Crops can be planted closer, to give higher yields, crop rotation can be practised easily and crops can be protected with netting and fleece much easier.

The disadvantages of these beds are they dry out rapidly in hot weather, good topsoil is required and nutrients can leech away. Closer planting can lead to more diseases such as damping off or rotting of young plants and more slugs at the edges of the boards.

Wooden structures will rot over time.

The Final Battle

For many of the brave men and women who serve their country in the armed forces, the war doesn’t stop when they leave the military. An unfortunate few are still haunted by a war raging inside them – the internal battle of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD as it is known.

“But years later it surfaced after some personal issues and it was like the flood gates had opened. The tide couldn’t be stopped and I had what can only be described as a nervous breakdown. I had been self medicating with alcohol for a while but everything got out of hand, I lost my home, a fabulous job I loved, and even members of my family who couldn’t understand what I was experiencing.”

Fortunately for Dave, he eventually found help through St Andrews Health Care when he was formally diagnosed with CPTSD (complex PTSD) and offered cognitive behavioural therapy.

St Andrews then referred him to Outside The Wire, an arm of the Norwich based charity The Matthew Project, which helps military veterans with drug or alcohol abuse as a result of PTSD.

A response to experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, PTSD is an extreme source of anxiety which affects the sufferer adversely where they Looking Back often relive the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, or experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt.

“I was lucky,” Dave admits. “I eventually got help and am on the road to recovery, although it has been a slow climb uphill and it hasn’t been without it set-backs.

I have found that writing poetry has been an excellent way of releasing my emotions and processing my thoughts.

Severe cases can impact on an individual significantly, affecting all aspects of the sufferer’s life from their relationships with family and friends through to work and even their ability to carry out normal day-to-day tasks, often with dramatically devastating consequences if left undiagnosed or untreated.

But, with help, sufferers of PTSD can recover and rebuild their lives, as one military veteran, Dave Fincham, has managed to do.

Dave explains: “When I left the army I buried everything that had happened during my time there.

“Photography has also been an enormous help allowing me to express myself in pictures and create something positive that others can enjoy. I have immersed myself in Surfer capturing our wonderful North Norfolk Coast and enjoying where I live – it has been a very important part of my therapy and my journey back to good metal health.”

“I was in the Royal Engineers and later 59 Commando, with action in Northern Ireland and Bosnia, I saw some bad things and did some bad things. It never leaves you but you try to adapt to civi-street and get on with your life.

Some of Dave’s images of North Norfolk have been reproduced as postcards and calendars, and are being stocked in retail outlets in Cromer as well as being sold online through his own website www.davefincham.photography. There are also plans for Dave’s photographic work and poetry to go on display in Norwich next year and to be reproduced in a coffee-table book.

Dave commented: “I would say to anyone with any mental health issues to seek out help and don’t give up. It took me almost 2 years of trying to access help to get the support I needed but just make that first call and life will improve. Despite still being on my journey to recovery, I think I am one of the happiest I have ever been now.”

Uplifting concert boosts funds for locked down Little Theatre

A sell-out concert crowd enjoyed uplifting stories and classical music as Sheringham Little Theatre signalled another big step back from lockdown.

Theatre supporters picnicked and savoured top quality music in the walled garden of spectacular moated Mannington Hall.

The London Mozart Players’ relaxing sounds were mixed with positive reflections on the good things to come out the pandemic delivered by young local actors.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “The concert was a huge success, with a crowd captivated by the music and thoughts in sunny weather and the perfect setting of the stately Happy picnickers relax in the hall grounds home belonging to our before the concert patron Lord Walpole. It has been fantastic to see 100 people enjoy a live event for the first time in months, which will provide us with much-needed funds.”

The event was promoted by Orchestras Live, whose senior creative producer Stuart Bruce said: “It was great to have the local young people playing a huge role in helping shape the concert, curating the words, helping choose the music, and presenting at the event – as well as seeing freelance musicians back performing live and restarting their careers.”

Our case this month is Alfie a 1-year old terrier cross with a habit of getting into mischief!

He was on his holidays here in Norfolk when his owners decided to have a go at fishing on the broads. Unfortunately, they hadn’t anticipated Alfie’s interest in their new hobby, or his speed and he got to their fishing bait and hook before they could stop him. He was brought straight into the surgery with fishing line trail from his mouth and clearly quite uncomfortable.

He was anaesthetised and x-rayed immediately and a fishhook could be seen stuck near the top of his oesophagus.

The hook was then found using our endoscope, a flexible camera designed for investigating the gastrointestinal tract. After a very tricky and delicate procedure the hook was successfully removed without the

need for Alfie to go to surgery. His owners were understandably very relieved, but Alfie’s bounced back very quickly and was able to enjoy the rest of his holiday with the family (but no more fishing).

In other news, we are incredibly excited to be able to announce our imminent move to our purpose-built state of the art veterinary facility in North Walsham. Westover Vets has been working in the town for nearly 125 years, but our new premises mark the biggest investment in all that time.

The project has been a number of years in the making and has been designed to enhance the provision of care for our patients and to reduce stress for patients and clients alike.

Given all that has happened through 2020 it is nice to be able to share a positive story and open a new facility that will further improve the service we can offer our patients.

It aims to stop seals being injured and sometimes killed by Frisbee type flying rings a popular beach toy.

She says “ We are not anti-fun, but I wish people would not take them onto the beach but rather buy solid discs instead. It’s just horrendous, I removed a ring from one seal and I thought her head was going to fall off because the wound was so deep and so horrible. Remote witnessing of Wills

The law of Wills in England and Wales is to be amended to allow the remote electronic witnessing of Wills under certain conditions. A Statutory Instrument under the Electronic Communications Act 2000 will implement the change. The news has been cautiously welcomed in the legal press.

Currently, under the 1837 Wills Act, a Will must be executed by the Testator (i.e. the person making the Will), ‘in the presence’ of two witnesses, present at the same time.

Some Testators have already used remote videomeeting platforms to arrange the execution of their new Will, hoping that the phrase ‘in the presence of’ would later be interpreted by the courts to include virtual-witnessing via electronic link. There is old case law stating that the witnessing ‘in line of sight’ is valid.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has now declared that Wills and Codicils witnesses by video link will be upheld, as long as the quality of the sound and video is sufficient for the parties to see and hear what is happening at the time. The new law is to last for two years and is retrospective from 31st January 2020.

Remote witnessing is only being authorised in an emergency, as ‘a last resort’, and Testators are being asked to arrange the physical witnessing of Wills where it is safe to do so. Strict precautions must be taken to deter fraud or undue influence.

The MoJ recommends that Testators at a remotelywitnessed Will signing should make a formal statement that ‘I, full name, wish to make a Will of my own free will and sign it here before witnesses, who are witnessing me doing it remotely’. Signatures must be ‘wet’. The whole process should be recorded and the recording retained along with the Will.

The Will, signed remotely by the Testator, then needs to be sent physically to both of the two witnesses, who should sign and write their name, address and occupation in the traditional way.

For a person who is shielding, the question of how to get the Will to the witnesses remains a problem.

Either they need to go out of the house to post it, or someone will need to collect it, in which case they could probably have arranged for witnesses to see them sign the Will in person, through an open door or window.

Arguably, it was not necessary to bring in these changes. To meet the demand for Wills, and to stick to social-distancing guidelines during lockdown, solicitors have had to find inventive new ways of getting Wills signed, with neighbours witnessing Wills over the garden fence and documents passed between cars 2 metres apart.

The legal profession lobbied for judicial powers to allow Wills, where formal signing procedures were not met, but where otherwise the legal requirements were met. This would have required primary legislation, which would have meant an Act of Parliament; so rather, these temporary remotewitnessing measures were introduced.

Guidance has been issued to minimise unintended consequences and to ensure validity. However, there are still many unanswered questions, such as: what if the Testator dies whilst the Will is being posted to the two witnesses for them to sign?

The new law will inevitably create an increase in disputes after the person has died, and evidence of remote witnessing is unlikely to be as convincing as it would be in person.

For those with no disability or vulnerability this new option could be a great help, although when you look at the subsequent procedures required, you may well think that it is just easier to find two independent witnesses and sign within each other’s ‘line of sight’ in a single step, in the time-honoured fashion.

Some lawyers have praised the changes saying that, at last, the legal profession is moving with the times and embracing modern technology. I have severe misgivings should the remote witnessing process be used by the vulnerable, and see too many ways in which abuse could arise.

What is clear is that new robust reforms for the signing of Wills are needed and that making these changes to the law in times of a pandemic is far from ideal.

1. For the brûlée, toast the tonka beans in the oven for 10 minutes at 150C/Gas mark 2. Peel the skin off and chop them into pieces.

How newlywed stage roles led to 40-year marriage

Romance is often seen on the stage of Sheringham Little Theatre as dramas unfold.

They met as strangers thanks to an “am dram” play casting crisis, took the parts of newlyweds and went on to enjoy a 40-year real life marriage.

“But I can’t go,” I replied, “as I don’t know them.”

But real-life relationships are also hatched there – like the uplifting and poignant story of Ashley and Aileen Gray.

Memories of their first meeting were sparked by a recent story about the Theatre discovering original programmes from its first ever summer drama season in 1960.

“You must go to see them,” he instructed me, not taking any excuses from me. “They’re very nice and will make you feel welcome.

“You will do as you are told!” he said, brusquely.

“A few nights later, I decided to go. Mrs Black ushered me inside. In the lounge, sitting on a settee, were two girls. One was their daughter, Aileen, the other was Janet Bell, who used to work in Cyril Nunn’s shop selling photographic supplies. really good review. And, playing newlyweds, Aileen and I became engaged late in 1966. We married, in foreign parts, Solihull, on 12 Aileen and Ashley in later life August, 1967, and had a great many happy years together.”

Ashley and Aileen lived in North Walsham and Wymondham and had a son Julian and daughter Samantha.

He continued: “Many years ago, when June was still in her dress shop in Church Street, we paid her a visit. It was the first time we had met up with her for a great many years, and it meant so much to Aileen and I. Sadly, Aileen passed away suddenly on Friday 6 August 2010. She had done what she always did on a Friday; she had gone swimming that afternoon. She came home, began getting our evening meal ready, and then suddenly told me she didn’t feel well. I got her to sit down for a minute, and she died in my arms. I was heartbroken. We were just six days away from our wedding anniversary. Ten years on, I still miss Aileen every day, but thanks to the Sheringham Players, I am greatly pleased to have been able to share my life with such a wonderful person.”

We have been very busy on the homing front with all the kittens that came to us via our friend during lockdown, now re-homed. Several other cats have also either left for new homes or will be leaving by the time you read this. The “cat” phone has certainly been extremely busy so please be patient if you do call and Stephanie cannot get back to you straight away.

One of the ladies who has fostered for us for many years has sadly had to give up her role due to ill health. We thank Pauline for all the care she has given to the cats over the years and wish her well for the future.

Fortunately, Caroline volunteered to have Pauline’s two pens, and these have already been moved to their new location.

One very important rule we follow when taking stray cats and kittens into care (also young kittens from feral colonies) is to get some of them blood tested for FIV/FELV. As also mentioned before, we do not mix cats from separate sources because this prevents cross infections occurring. During lockdown we took in a stray cat who did test positive for FIV, so had he been put in an area with other cats he could have passed this on to them. Although we do not see FIV cats that often, we do know that the local branch of RSPCA recently had three available for homing. Mixing cats that have not been tested could result in more cats being infected. Also during lockdown we took in, via local vets, a lovely stray cat that had broken his leg in two places. Humphrey’s leg was pinned, and he was put on cage rest to give it time to heal. He made very good progress apart from some damage to his tail. This was not considered to be a serious problem and Humphrey is one of the lucky cats to have left us recently, this time to one of the vets involved in his treatment. He is a very lovable cat and she could not resist him.

These little ones came in to me three weeks ago ,they were very young, approx. 4 days with eyes still closed, so it was 2hrly feeds of goats milk, the eyes are now open so it's 3hrly feeds.

I’m hoping it won't be long before they can feed themselves, the nest was disturbed and the mother took off.

Every year CHURCHES TOGETHER provides a Christmas Day Lunch for anyone living on their own in the Parish of North Walsham.

It is a difficult time, for all organisations trying to make a decision, whether to plan events for the Christmas Period, or cancel them.

Christmas can be a very lonely time of year, and we realise, that our decision will affect many people.

Churches together, Christmas Team, will make a decision at the end of October, with a letter going to all those who have previously attended the Christmas Day Lunch, and to all those who have volunteered to help, also, local welfare groups will be contacted.

Four weeks of contact training is needed before matches could start.

This Saturday should have seen the start of the Vikings’ campaign in London & South East Premier with a trip to Hertford, but September’s fixtures were postponed weeks ago and no date has yet been given when matches will be allowed. With the season’s length uncertain, the League has been split into two Conferences and the season three phases. Fixtures have to start by 10 October for there to be time for all three phases. In phase one the Vikings play the six teams in their Conference (CS Stags 1863, Hertford, Maidenhead, Sidcup, Tring, Wimbledon) home and away. Phase two would see them play the other Conference’s teams (Brighton, Dorking, Havant, Sevenoaks, Sutton, Tunbridge Wells, Westcombe Park) home or away, with those fixtures reversed for phase three.

Leisure Centre Swimming Pools to Reopen

Everyone Active’s swimming pools across North Norfolk, managed in partnership with North Norfolk District Council, are set to reopen in August after being closed for almost five months due to Coronavirus.

Following the successful reopening of gyms and group exercise studios last month, Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre and Victory Swim and Fitness Centre will reopen their pools for bookable lane swimming on August 20.

Swimming lessons will commence on August 22.

The Government update on 9 July confirmed leisure facilities were now safe to reopen, with strict operational measures in place. A variety of measures have been introduced across the facilities. These include booking in advance for sessions and fewer lessons within the pool at any one time, to allow for both children and swimming teachers to social distance. Lesson

times will be staggered so there will be fewer classes starting and finishing at the same time and only one parent/guardian is asked to attend with a child, to reduce the number of people in the centre. Full details on Everyone Active’s reopening measures can be found here.

Beach Safety Warning

North Norfolk District Council is urging people to be extremely cautious when visiting the beach. With many people choosing to enjoy ‘staycations’ and make day trips to the area, local beaches will be busy and it is more important than ever to respect the sea, and to be aware of your surroundings to accommodate social distancing guidance.

People who regularly visit the beach and enjoy the sea will know how fast the tides can come in, or how quickly the sea conditions can change, but it is crucial that visitors understand the risks presented by the sea and cliffs and know what to do in an emergency.

People are reminded that they should not climb or dig around the base of the cliffs. Cliffs should not be used as quick access to the beach, as they are extremely fragile and could slip at any moment. In the last 12 months alone, our cliffs have experienced several major slips, therefore we must urge people to stay safe and avoid causing further instability.

We would also remind people that cliff jumping (or jumping from structures, such as Cromer Pier, which is not permitted under any circumstances), especially as there is limited or no lifeguard presence, is extremely dangerous, and may result in serious injury. Swimmers enjoying the sea should also be mindful of rip tides or unexpected currents to take hold and render swimmers unable to get back to safety and should not use inflatables on the sea.

In recent days there have been a number of emergencies along the North Norfolk coast involving HM Coastguard and the RNLI lifeboats with other emergency services responding to incidents in the sea and on our cliffs and we want people to stay safe and enjoy themselves without placing strain on the emergency services.

Beach hut owners have been able to enjoy using their huts and chalets again, however for this year, given the large numbers of visitors and the need to facilitate social distancing on narrow promenade areas, we ask that hut and chalet owners either sit inside their huts and chalets, or on the beach. This allows passers-by, particularly wheelchair users or pushchairs, to pass at a safe distance.

We want visitors to the beach to enjoy themselves and the hot weather safely. Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration, avoid the sun during peak hours and please use appropriate SPF to avoid sunburn. The NHS has a comprehensive guide for more advice on coping in hot weather.

Please use this advice and look out for vulnerable friends and family members, such as the elderly or children.
