Ambulance Trust pledges to review cuts to ambulance service The current Chief Executive of the Ambulance Service Trust, Hayden Newton, has pledged to ensure the Trust continues to monitor the situation in North Walsham following meetings with Act on Ambulances campaigners.
Last month, as the 6500-signature petition was gathering momentum, Act on Ambulances campaigners welcomed a u-turn on some of the cuts to the service in Cromer and North Walsham, but said that the plans did not go far enough.
North Walsham will now see 112 hours of the ambulance returned to the town – in addition to the 24/7 rapid response vehicle – but there will still be losses of 56 ambulance hours a week due to government cuts.
On 26 September North Norfolk Labour Party campaigners, who organised the petition, made the trip to Cambourne in Cambridgeshire to meet with the Trust to call for more support in North Walsham.

National Trust joins fight to save traditional textile industry The National Trust is doing its bit to keep one of England’s most important traditional industries alive – thanks to pioneering work being carried out at Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk.
“It is very important that initiatives like the Living Looms Project are successful,” added Eleanor. “The National Trust is founded on the principle of preserving our country’s heritage and open spaces forever, for everyone. If we want to maintain the intrinsic character of ageing properties like Felbrigg Hall well into the future, then we also need to preserve the traditional skills and machines that will make that possible.”
In a UK first, Felbrigg is hosting the pilot project for a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to preserve the time-honoured knowledge, skills and technology of England’s textile industry – important aspects of our heritage that face the threat of extinction.
Specialists from the Living Looms Project will be using traditional methods and machinery to create a replica of a historically important, vibrant Georgian carpet from Felbrigg Hall’s Gothic library. The original carpet dates from the 1830s and is now extremely faded and worn. When finished, the replica will be fitted as a replacement for the original, bringing the library back to life and giving visitors a taste of the room’s original grandeur.
Samples of the material have already been taken to the Living Looms Project for detailed analysis, to discover the carpet’s original colours – once thought to be lost forever. “It is very exciting,” said Eleanor Akinlade, the National Trust’s house manager for Felbrigg Hall. “We’ve found out the original had vibrant plum purples, deep shades of green and impressive blues – completely different to the faded colours left after nearly 200 years of use and exposure to daylight.”
Results show the carpet is particularly noteworthy as it contains 29 colours in an intricate 3 ft by 3 ft floral design, making it a rare surviving example of a Printed Tapestry carpet.

Where hair care is still an art
The Living Looms Project runs a small number of unique, late 19th century carpet looms from its workshop in Stourport-on-Severn in the West Midlands – the last looms of their kind in the world and the only looms capable of producing an acceptable replica of a Printed Tapestry carpet like the one in Felbrigg’s library.
Mo Mant, from the Living Looms Project, said: “England has already lost many of its traditional technologies, designs and skills and the textile industry has been one of the worst hit.
“Without the Living Looms Project, numerous more historic textiles, including carpets and tapestries, will disappear. That is why it is vital that we work handin-hand with conservation organisations like the National Trust. Once gone, these textiles will be lost forever.”

North Norfolk praised for cleanliness and given five star award
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has been recognised for keeping its communities very tidy and been handed a five star award for the cleanliness of the district.
NNDC’s efforts to keep the district clean have earned the award in the 2012 Clean Britain Awards.
Anonymous inspections assessed 13 key criteria, including general litter, chewing gum and smoking-related litter, fly-tipping, graffiti and the provision and condition of litter bins. North Norfolk was inspected in August, at the height of the holiday season.
Areas inspected included Fakenham town centre, high school and college and Wells Road; Holt High Street and Country Park; Sheringham High Street, sea front and train station; Cromer sea front, promenade and Cromwell Road; and North Walsham High Street and Market Place.
Comments in the official Clean Britain Awards report included:
“Holt could hardly be faulted with near perfect scores in the town centre and a perfect 100% in Holt Country Park with the latter receiving glowing praise from the judges.”
“Cromer promenade was amazing given the high volume of people there in high season. The litter bin provision to cope with the additional footfall was excellent.”
The area round Sheringham Station was said to be “only small but nonetheless, an extremely clean, pleasant and tidy entrance to the town”. While North Walsham was praised for its “nice tidy town centre”, and Fakenham was described as “an extremely well kept and tidy town”.
John Lee, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “Great efforts are made in North Norfolk to keep the environ-

We offer a lunch club to the villages surrounding Blakeney, but do need car drivers to collect people from their homes and bring to us at Thistleton Court in Blakeney for lunch and social interaction.
This service is so appreciated by those people who do not have transport, or are no longer able to drive.

ment clean and tidy for both visitors and people who live here. “We are very pleased to receive five stars, but equally it is important to maintain our efforts and ensure standards remain very high. “We can always do even better and will aim to do so in the future.”
The awards are run by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) in association with the British Cleaning Council and are open to all local authorities and other organisations involved in managing public spaces.
Steve Lee, chief executive of CIWM, said, “Our communities deserve well maintained and attractive public places and the Clean Britain Awards recognise and reward the efforts made by councils and other organisations to keep our local areas clean and welcoming. “The quality of our local environment contributes directly to our sense of wellbeing and civic pride and plays an important role in improving the economic prosperity of our towns, cities and rural districts.”

Historic Lodge Wins North Norfolk Conservation and Design Award
The 2012 North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Graham Allen Award has been won by a ‘weekend retreat’ which was once the favourite of Edward VII. The retreat, now The Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market, dates from the 19th Century and was the former lodge to Gunton Hall. The building had been in decline and looked to be following the same route as so many other traditional watering holes. However, considerable intervention, restoration and re-modelling has breathed new life into this important Grade II Listed Building. The owner’s intention from the outset was to reinstate the building’s original character and architectural features. North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said “This is an excellent example of a restoration scheme that respects the original structure. The scheme pays close attention to detail and new elements complement the historic structure. The building has been brought back to life and is a credit to everyone involved and to North Norfolk as a whole”.
A modern piece of contemporary design has been highly commended. The Atrium, North Walsham, perfectly marries community needs with innovative spaces and striking design. The judges said the building was a bold architectural statement which has added another dimension to community facilities in the town.
This year two schemes received a commendation, Moor Hall Farm, Briston and Brookside and Blogg Cottage, Kelling. Moor Hall Farm saw the restoration of a derelict 18th Century MM F. COOKE OF ROUGHTON farm house and outbuildings with the addition Manufacturer and Supplier of a striking three-storey ‘tower’. The scheme of Concrete Products at Kelling saw the sensitive refurbishment of Display at Groveland Fruit Farm, Brookside Cottage and the erection of the Thorpe Market Road, Roughton NR21 8TB matching Blogg Cottage. This project was RELOCATION SALE praised for its locally distinctive approach, ALL STOCK MUST GO vernacular design and overall contribution to the setting and appearance of the Kelling ConMAKE ME AN OFFER servation Area. Ashcroft, Chapel Road. Roughton NR11 8QP
The awards were presented at North Norfolk District Council’s offices on 8 October by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

The Norfolk Hospice
The desire to provide Norfolk with the level of hospice care it requires has always been central to the mission of our Hospice, Chief Executive Richard Shaw, told members of the Rotary Club of Holt at their weekly Luncheon Meeting. A crucial part of this aspiration is to develop a purpose-built Hospice for adults living in Norfolk and the Fens, something which is not available in the County outside the Norwich catchment area. ‘Our vision is of a full service purpose-built Hospice - to include in-patient beds - on a new site, in a more central location, to serve North and West Norfolk and the part of the Fens we cover. This project will only come to fruition with the support of our benefactors and the communities we serve. As the range of services we offer increase, so does the amount of money we require to continue supporting those living with a life-limiting illness. The people of Norfolk and the Fens urgently need and truly deserve the very highest standard of Hospice care for everyone who requires it. We have established a Capital Campaign to raise funds for the New Hospice which involves appeals in Norwich and London. They were given five acres of land in Hillington, east of King's Lynn and outline planning permission has been approved. The initial cost of the project was nine million, but this had been halved’. In addition since taking charge he had reduced current costs and reinforced the Ethos. 45 per cent of the new facilities will be devoted to Cancer, with a similar amount to Neurological problems for which there is no cure, chronic heart disease and lung failure, mainly in age groups 18m to 21. Day care and day service will be developed and there will be 12 beds. A relationship is being developed with the NHS which provides some six percent of the funding, the rest of the annual cost of 1.7 million being raised from the public, to serve 380 people a month. Locally, Greshams and various other schools around the county provide support, across activities, in addition to the 250 volunteers who help.

Skydive raises more than £7000
A skydive at Beccles Airfield raised more than £7000 for Big C, Norfolk and Waveney’s own cancer charity.
The dive, on 9 September, saw 12 people jumping out of a plane and raising thousands to go towards the charity’s work supporting people in Norfolk and Waveney who are living with cancer.

North Norfolk Speakers Club hosted the Area Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest on Wednesday 3rd October at Rossi’s Leisure, North Walsham.
The event was well supported by members and guests from North Norfolk, Norwich, Dereham and Brandon Speakers Clubs. President Gillian Beecroft opened the evening with a welcome speech before handing the floor to the Contest Chair, David McNaughter. Contestants delivered speeches of a very high calibre and Stuart Richards from North Norfolk Speakers Club consolidated his success at club level by winning the Humorous Speech Contest, against stiff competition. James Allison from Norwich Speakers club ably secured his well deserved place in the next round, winning the Table Topics Contest.
The charity funds ground-breaking research into beating cancer at UEA as well as paying for support and vital life-saving equipment. It runs support and information centres at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and on Regent Street in Great Yarmouth, as well as offering a drop-in service on Mondays at the Millennium Library in Norwich.
If you would like to find out more about the charity’s work or help us by volunteering, fundraising or joining our consultation group, please call us at the Big C office on 01603 619900 or visit our website at www.big-c.co.uk.
Diane Northway, Big C’s North Norfolk community fundraiser, made the leap herself. She said: “Everyone really enjoyed it and some of us wanted to do it again next spring. I’d like to thank everyone who took part and helped us raise this amazing amount of money.
Very Humourous
Money raised goes to help people in your community who are affected by cancer.

Members, 2 guests and 1 visitor attended the lunch on 2 October. The meal supplied by the Links Hotel, West Runton was well received and then we moved into the function room for coffee and the talk.
Graeme Simmonds’ presentation was based upon the many “recovered artefacts” which he had brought along. He selected items in turn, telling us how he had come across them and involving us in discussion about their purpose and historical implications. Graeme demonstrated the

depth and breadth of his knowledge relating to flint axes, clay pipes, buckles, coins and other assorted finds.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 6 November, when the topic after lunch will be “Cars with a difference” presented by David Morton. He has told us little about the content as he wishes to retain an element of surprise, but he did let on that it involves plenty of interaction with the audience.
David is a mechanical engineer by profession and still works in that field, fitting in a considerable number of talks to groups of all ages, including Probus Clubs.
If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@ hotmail.co.uk for more information.
Since the last meeting, one of the guests has applied to join and the visitor has also said that he would like to join so, if you pay us a visit, you will not be the only “new boy”.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE WINTER GREENHOUSE
winter and early spring. A small sowing of a lettuce such as ‘Little Gem’ can be made in October and the resulting seedlings pricked out and spaced out in a seed tray and grown on in the best possible light and covered with fleece if the weather gets really cold. In December the plants are moved into 3 ½ inch pots and carefully watered and fed. Growing the lettuces in pots allows for good air circulation and reduces the threat of fungal infections such as Botrytis.
Cutting begins as soon as they are large enough. The first pickings will be good leaves which will make excellent salads. The remaining plants will develop hearts and can be cut as required. Using this method fresh and tasty lettuce can be cut as needed over an extended cropping period when commercial supplies tend to be insipid and expensive.
The winter greenhouse can be a very depressing place. The tomato plants have been cut down from their supports and the green tomatoes put on the staging to ripen. Pot plants are looking tired and are either consigned to the compost heap or cut down to overwinter underneath the staging. The lawnmower, garden furniture and children’s toys are thrown in to await the spring.
However it is possible to keep gardening in your greenhouse throughout the winter and I am going to try to produce colourful flowers and some edible crops even though the days are getting shorter and colder and there is no special heating.
It is surprising that many gardeners who grow excellent summer crops in their greenhouses fail to use them for vegetable production in
features in mind, the capacity to flower in the short days of winter, tolerance of extreme weather and the ability to stay compact and not stretch and fall over when mild weather eventually comes. In general pansies produce larger flowers but not many of them, violas carry many more flowers but they are smaller. Violas also tend to be tougher and more weather resistant. On the basis that it is preferable to have many small flowers rather than one or two larger ones I have concentrated on violas and currently have fifty or more little plants, all subtly different flowering in the greenhouse. Only time will tell whether they will be too coddled and develop some form of disease but it will be fun trying and hopefully I will have a good display to fight those winter blues that many gardeners suffer.
Other suggestions for your winter greenhouse include bulbs especially prepared hyacinths and daffodils and why not try some potatoes which are now in the garden centres especially designed to be grown in containers and give you some new potatoes deep in winter.
To bring colour into the greenhouse I am experimenting with winter pansies and violas. They are often a little disappointing when grown outside as they fall prey to rain, wind and snow and of course the attentions of slugs and snails who seem to have a preference for the petals over the stems and leaves. Buying several trays of pansies and violas from local garden centres and violas I have put them the plants into one litre pots and displayed them on the greenhouse staging where I can look them in the eye. I will now be able to see whether it is too warm or dry for them under glass or whether they will enjoy the extra care and protection. I will report back.
Bob Wilkinson
Winter pansies and violas were developed by breeders with three

Pumpkin Star prize of a free family ticket for next year’s visit of Thomas the Tank Engine at the beginning of May.
And, of course, there’ll be a Ghost Train. On Hallowe’en itself, Wednesday 31 October, the Ghost Train will leave Sheringham at 6.30pm for a trip to Hallowe’en Hall and back. The fare is just £9.50 adult and £5 child (not suitable for under 8 year olds) and may well include a refreshing little surprise.
SiS and Angel Packs Update
The usual Rover fares apply all week for all normal service trains: £10.50 adult, £7.00 child 5 – 15 (under 5s free) and £9.50 senior citizen. The family ticket at £35 (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) includes a £5 voucher to spend on refreshments or gifts.
There have not been any incidents requiring the use of an Angel Pack in the last few weeks which is great news! SiS are delighted to announce that they raised £270 with their "Prize a Time" tombola during Carnival Week! This means that the Angel Pack Fund is very healthy and hopefully will not require any more funds for some time, which is a wonderful position to be in! As so much was raised a further Angel Pack will be situated at Blooming Blooms in The Granary, Station Road, Sheringham, and also at Weybourne and Holt Stations on the Poppy Line Railway. Thank you to everyone for their support for this ongoing local initiative!
SiS are continuing with their local fundraising and will be holding a Tombola and Raffle on Saturday 24 November - the day of the Christmas Lights Switch-on - outside the NatWest Bank from 10am - 5pm approximately. The money raised will be split 50/50 between our Local Macmillan Cancer Care Group and Sheringham ABC (After Breast Cancer). The Sheringham ABC Group have recently heard that their funding has been cut so this event will, hopefully, raise funds to help to keep this important group going. Please come along and support us on the day!
Save lives with the extra hour When the clocks go back this October, what will you do with the extra hour?
Stay in bed? Fit in an extra gym session? Spend time with family? How about saving a life? NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are reminding the public that it only takes an hour to give blood. With blood in constant demand, new and existing donors are being urged to donate in Sheringham to ensure that sufficient blood is available for patients.
There are many ways that donated blood can save the lives of the sick and injured. Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia.
Giving blood can dramatically improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions, in fact a single donation can be broken into three component parts (red cells, plasma and platelets) which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said “As the weather gets colder, people are more likely to stay indoors. We would like to remind people that they only need to spend an hour of their time with us in order to help save lives. With the increase in the cold and flu this season, it is vital that those that are able to donate do so, to keep stock levels healthy”.
18
Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk Sheringham Independent #354 27th October 2012
North Norfolk Cliffs Inspire Leslie
It was a simple chance observation that made Leslie Nockels choose “North Norfolk Cliffsâ€? for the title of her painting show, part of the COAST Festival at the Blue Sky CafĂŠ, for the cafĂŠ stands on the highest cliff west of Cromer. She has spent the summer walking the whole of the North Norfolk beaches looking at the cliffs, from Mundesley to Weybourne.
Cliffs in North Norfolk differ so widely in character. Chalk as in the short variegated cliffs at Weybourne, the great raft pushed up at Overstrand, the sea worn arch at Runton (featured on BBCs Country File), or the so soft gorgeously coloured but contorted sands of Happisburgh to the hideous frightening caldera of liquid clay eating back deep into the high cliffs of Trimingham.

We are lucky - cliffs allow us see into the landmass and discover the secrets that lie beneath our feet, simply because the sea has swept away the foot of the cliffs to reveal the interiors. She tells of thin layers of grey clay, white chalk, and cream marl all swirled together as if by a gigantic wooden spoon (Mundesley, Sheringham) – and wonders what forces twisted and folded these delicate layers, surely such a great force would destroy all layering -they are Battlefields of Feathers!
Leslie has been painting these stories of the earth in acrylic and oils and they can be seen at the Blue Sky Cafe, Runton Road car park, Cromer, 27 October - 3 November, but she is also at COAST's exhibition taster being staged at Sheringham Library 20 October – 3 November.
She has walked these beached all her life, but never really looked properly at the cliffs, as she says ‘Oh what we are missing when walking on the beaches we invariably turn our backs on the cliffs and gaze out to sea’!

Sheringham and District Society
This year has been another record year for both the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre and the Peter Coke Shell Gallery which the Sheringham and District Society look after.
Fishermen’s Heritage Centre The Fishermen’s Heritage Centre opened for 166 days between Easter and the end of September. This was 40 days more than in
2011.Thanks are due to our volunteers who put themselves out to make this possible. 10,700people visited the historic Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat – 1,200 more than in 2011. Over 125 overseas visitors visited the Centre. They came from 24 countries with the USA and Australia being the most frequently mentioned.
The 2012 special display was Fishermen’s Nickname’swhich proved very popular. Families such as the Cox’s, Craske’s, Farrow’s, Pegg’s and West’s visited the Centre to find out about their great-grandfathers. They were told children how “Plug” Emery set sail one day with the plug missing from the bottom of his boat and got rather wet!
The many positive comments in the Visitors Book include: "Boat looks wonderful”; “Loved all the photos - fascinating displays”; “Wow - our boys loved it”; “I liked the big boatit was epic”; “Lots of memories from my last visit 20 years ago”.
Peter Coke Shell Gallery With 8,250 visitors this year (1750 more than last year) the Gallery continues its upward trend. This is due to our volunteers again who have opened the Gallery for more days this year than in any other year,
FOG TO FOLD!
as well as to the power of word of mouth recommendations, children, who perhaps have visited as part of an organised school visit, bring in their parents. This year we invested in much more stock and also decided to experiment by buying in some more expensive shells which have sold well.
The visitor book is completely full of positive comments such as: “The most fantastic shell collection we have ever seen.” “Unbelievable! Never seen anything like it.” “Wow!!” “Awesome!”
It will be a shame if it comes to that and I am hoping that there are parents reading this who feel they can make a difference and join us.
This is a desperate plea to all parents, grandparents and carers of the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Young Leaders who attend the Sheringham Headquarters on Cromer Road, and to the girls themselves:
Girl Guiding is the UKs largest Voluntary organisation for girls and young women. I think a lot of people are unaware of the work that goes in to organising the different activities that our girls do each week, every week of the term. No-one gets paid a wage, everyone does it because they enjoy it. BUT we need to fund-raise! This is where FOG help out (Friends of Guiding)
Whatever time you have spare, whatever skills you may have… WE NEED YOU!!
Contact me on 01263 824743 or 07786 618816 or email tcghanbouri@hotmail.com or send me a message on Facebook: Tracey Ghanbouri
We should be a group of parents raising money throughout the year. The money raised goes towards the upkeep of the Headquarters, so; if you meet at the headquarters for your weekly unit meetings, or you drop your daughter off there every week, this appeal is aimed at YOU!!

In order for the fund-raising to continue during the year FOG need a committee. There are just two of us at the moment! We need more people to come on board and be part of our fund-raising team.
EͲmail: paul@myersͲgroup.co.uk Website: www.myersͲgroup.co.uk
It’s not a huge commitment. There are no long meetings to attend and the more people we have to help, the less everyone has to do!
We need people who are: • computer literate • willing to help come up with new fund-raising ideas • willing to organise a cake stall in town • happy to be part of a team • happy to help organise the annual Xmas Fayre • happy to help at the Discos (we have one every school term) You don’t have to do all of the above but if you are willing and able thenWE NEED YOU!!
If we don’t get a committee formed then FOG WILL FOLD. Simple as that. No more discos, no more Xmas Fayre, no more fund-raising.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time, we mentioned the little cat that was missing but had not been chipped. Unfortunately the person who was thought to have taken her said this was not the case and she appears to have disappeared without trace. As she was a pedigree cat we believe she has been stolen and her owner deeply regrets not having her chipped.
Talking to other branches of Cats Protection on a Cat Forum it is apparent that the situation regarding stray and unwanted cats is the worst we have experienced as a charity. However, compared to some areas of the country we are quite fortunate. Although we have a waiting list for cats to come in, we do not have to limit this to stray cats and can, given time, take those that are in a home at present, but for whatever reason need to find a new one. The general consensus also indicates that fewer people are coming forward to offer cats and kittens new homes. Perhaps some are under the misapprehension that we charge a lot of money, but this is not the case. Looking at the ‘dreaded’ websites we see cats and kittens being offered for far more money and without the health checks, vaccinations and routine treatments ours have all received. Others are being sensible and considering the costs they could incur owning a pet should it become ill or have an accident and maybe deciding that they can only afford one where in the past they might have given a home to two. These are worrying times but we will continue to help as many cats and kittens as we can.
Earlier this year we launched a “Free Neutering” campaign and several vets in the area agreed to participate. Although this was intended for those who were having difficulty in paying for the operation and to prevent more litters of unwanted kittens, we know that people who could afford to pay took advantage of the offer. The offer has now closed and approximately £12,000 of branch funds have been spent on this. Because Stephanie receives so many calls about neutering it has been decided to set up a special phone line to take these calls. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat in future please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible), and not Stephanie.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

Dear Grumpy Old Man
I am 100% with you. You do not stand alone in this respect. I, too, do not use a computer and have been subject to similar experiences. Fortunately I have a wife who can work the box and two children who will, if sometimes reluctantly, press all the appropriate buttons to get me what I want. The only advantage of the ‘plastic god’ is to make things quicker but at my age I can afford the time. Seems that to cram everything possible in to every minute of every day (even on holiday!) is the norm now but hey! Are things any better with computers? Nope!! Notice when the computerised system in your local shop fails to perform, no purchases can be made. The favoured excuse for inaction is ‘the computer’s down’. Ask for something and the reply might well be ‘the computer won’t let me do that!’ Whatever the machine says is right – brainpower is eroded. We are supposed to talk through the box via e-mail thus doing away with the art of conversation, letter writing and/or penmanship. I don’t advocate a return to the past but those in the present should acknowledge that until every last dinosaur has left the planet, consideration should be given to those who want to wallow in the luxury of yesteryear. Grumpies unite!!! Terry Dacktill (correct name and address supplied
Dear Grumpy Old Man
Having read your item in The Sheringham Independent complaining about computer use and how difficult you find it – your problems probably started with those 2 hour classes. I first acquired a computer at age 60 – 13 years ago – and am self taught. I now run an online mail order business as well as a designer/maker business and B&B – all have their own websites and would not exist without an online presence. Anyone not computer literate now is cut off from so much. Skype for contacting friends and family in far flung parts of the world – this is a free mode of keeping in really good contact with children, grandchildren and friends. Shopping online for groceries if one is housebound or unable to drive in this rural area where one can be very isolated. All one needs is to use email and Google for all these contacts and information. Trouble is if you can’t - then you don’t know what you are missing. Don’t be so luddite – it’s not helpful to others and its negative. Many older people are very computer savvy and enjoy all the benefits from this. Facebook, Twitter and all the rest are optional! Dear Margaret
Although the new toilets on the prom look very nice and the colourful beach hut theme fits in well with its surroundings I feel the design has many faults. The main one being the doors opening outwards onto the prom was not a good idea. Someone must have realised this as a few days later yellow lines appeared (which no one takes any notice of), and then notices appeared urging caution when opening doors. These two measures should be enough but small children and dogs for instance do not know what yellow lines are for and cannot read the notices. On many walks along the prom I have seen people using the yellow lined area as a walkway and have narrowly missed being knocked over. Also people with dogs on leads leave them wandering ahead and they are frequently near the doors. If this had been a traditional style toilet block, but with a beach hut style frontage, perhaps it would have been less likely to have been vandalised. There is absolutely no excuse for vandalism but in this day and age every public facility has to take the possibility into account when it is being designed. I would be interested to know who designed the toilets, who passed the plans and how much did it cost and who is going to pay for the cost of the vandalism. P Whitworth

Autumn Leaves
There’s a nip in the air, Autumn is here, The countryside is beautiful At this time of year. Sunlight filters through the trees, Making everywhere so bright, I watch the river sparkle, Such a magical sight. I see a red squirrel whizzing up a tree,
The speed that he is moving Quite surprises me. Gold and brown leaves spiral down And crackle where I tread, The colours are amazing, Sometimes the leaves are red. My spirits are lifted At the colours I see, I long for days like this, They give such joy to me. Diane Berthelot
