Norfolk Wildlife Trust is raising funds to secure 143 acres of land that will connect the outstanding nature reserves at Cley and Salthouse Marshes and create an exceptional stretch of coastline in conservation care. It all forms part of our vision for A Living

Coast in North Norfolk. Alongside the land purchase and its restoration, we are seeking to create the Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre, a new building that will complement and expand upon the existing visitor centre’s design and increase the area of available space for visitors. This will be a flexible, multi-purpose space that allows us to accommodate school and community groups and provide scope for lectures, exhibitions and events.

Freepost ANG20591, Bewick House, 22 Thorpe Road, Norwich, NR1 1ZW

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

FROM FUNGI TO FLOWERS

It was planned that the October talk to members of the Sheringham Horticultural Society would be on the subject of fungi and mushrooms but the unavailability of the speaker meant that we had to arrange an alternative talk on butterflies. However the late withdrawal of this new speaker due to problems with his computer meant that a third speaker had to be found at short notice.

Despite all these problems the evening was a great success attracting over 50 members and visitors who were treated to an illustrated talk on the Flowers of the Norfolk Broads given by local naturalist Simon Harrop who has just published a book on this subject. Simon had recently returned from South Africa and leads a very busy life combining his writing on many natural history subjects with leading groups of bird lovers to exotic locations all over the world so we were very lucky that he was available to talk to us.

In 2013 Simon is visiting the Philippines, Nepal, Borneo, Oman and Bahrain, and Northern India but his talk demonstrated that we do not have to travel so far to see wonderful sights and that a journey through the marshes, fens, broads, rivers, ditches and dykes of the Norfolk Broads to see our local flowers is also exciting, much cheaper and will not give us jet lag.

Our final talk of 2012 will be held in St Josephs Parish Centre on Thursday, 29 November at 7.30 pm when Eddie Anderson, Producer and Presenter of Anglia Television’s ‘Bygones’ programme will talk about his own collection of Norfolk artefacts and ephemera.

Please contact me about this meeting or any other information about the Society’s activities. Our 2013 programme already includes a visit by Nick Hamilton who will be talking about the life of his father Geoff and the filming of Gardeners’ World at Barnsdale. Bob Wilkinson

But don’t hang about – trains are already filling up fast. St. Andrew's Methodist Church Ladies Association At our Coffee Evening on Tuesday 23 October our speaker was Mark Loades, Fund Raising Partnership Manager for East Anglian Children's Hospices or EACH. He has his office at Quidenham where the South Norfolk hospice is, but also raises funds for the charity's other two hospices, one at Milton near Cambridge and the new hospice in Ipswich, called Treetops. This was opened by the Duchess of Cambridge, who became a patron of the hospices after visiting them and seeing their good work.

Many of our members attended the evening including five new ladies. Although the subject was a sad one, Mark was a good speaker, and explained to us clearly how the work of the hospices and the facilities there can greatly improve the lives of very sick children who are not expected to reach adulthood, and also help their families, in so many ways. They are places where the children are cherished and their abilities, both mental and physical, can be enjoyed to the uttermost. The hospices have special facilities to make this possible. They have sensory rooms and playrooms and the children can also enjoy individual music therapy, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy. Each child admitted has a personal care plan

and receives one-to-one attention, usually just for short break care, although 24 hour emergency care is available too. The charity also works in the children's own homes and in hospitals, supporting the whole family.

The three hospices are not large with each one catering for only six resident children, but there is also space for visiting families as there are large lounges and rooms where parents can stay. Mark was especially familiar with Quidenham, and explained that it is an old and very homely house, not purpose built, but in the grounds of a monastery which houses a silent order of Carmelite nuns. The hospice has an excellent chef who provides whatever the children fancy and he also feeds the staff very well it seems. Sister Wendy, the TV art critic (who is not in the silent order) lives in a caravan in the grounds, and visits the hospice most days although now with some help as she is becoming increasingly infirm. Everyone who has ever visited Quidenham speaks of the very special spiritual atmosphere that surrounds this hospice in the countryside.

Of course, much of Mark’s work is concerned with raising awareness of the financial needs of the hospices. Only 25-27% of the money needed comes from government funding with a small amount from Primary Care Trusts as well. They receive nothing from the Lottery

Norman Lamb MP Supports StartUp Loans for Young People

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is calling on young entrepreneurs to take advantage of a new scheme to provide loans that will kick-start business ideas. or Children in Need, so fund raising is vital since £15,000 a day is needed to keep all three hospices running at their present level of operation. There are 13 shops throughout this region that accept donations for the hospices and this year they hope to raise £650,000. It is hoped that another hospice can be opened in North Norfolk. Most of the money raised comes from small donations, from gifts, wills, fund-raising walks, Santa runs, collections, coffee mornings and the like. Altogether this year £5.75 million will be needed. Let us hope that Mark and his helpers will be successful this year and for the years to come as the number of children and young people up to 19 years old who need the hospices is growing. We were able to buy Christmas cards in support of EACH and will be sending a cheque in due course.

Our next meeting on 13November should be light-hearted when our Committee will be encouraged to reveal details of themselves when young! If you would like to visit or join us please ring 01263 822807.

really is a fantastic initiative, and will reap dividends for decades to come. I would strongly urge young people who think they have a good business idea to explore the opportunities offered by StartUp Loans.” StartUp Loans is a government-backed project, lending up to £2,500 to any young person wanting to start a business. Foundation East, an Industrial and Provident Society based in Bury St Edmunds, is a delivery partner for the scheme in the East of England. Their website is: www.foundationeast.org

Refusal of Treatment and End of Life Care

By Miranda Marshall, Partner at Hayes + Storr

The two major professions of Law and Medicine inter-connect in the emotionally-charged subject of end of life care directives.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (“the Act”) greatly aided doctors by standardising the assessment of mental capacity and setting out what was needed in ‘best interests’ decisions in patients who lack mental capacity. The Act also created the Advance Directive (“AD”) (colloquially known as a “Living Will”) and the Lasting Power of Attorney - Health and Welfare (“LPA-H&W”). Enduring or Lasting Powers of Attorney relating to property and affairs have been possible since 1985, but the area of health and personal welfare was uncharted and dangerous legal territory.

Put simply, an AD allows you to specify in advance what treatment etc. you do or do not want in the future if you are ever mentally incapable of such decisions for yourself; whereas an LPA-H&W allows you to appoint one or more persons whom you trust to make decisions on your behalf, should you lack capacity.

It is important to make a distinction between ‘treatment’ and ‘care’. Healthcare professionals recognise four different classes of treatment: preventative, curative, palliative and life-sustaining. The differentiation relates to the intention rather than the type of treatment and some treatments may fall into more than one category.

Whereas the first three classes of treatment are fairly easy to define, what is ‘life-sustaining’ is not. It was therefore intentional that the Act did not provide a definition and so it has been left open to allow clinical professional judgement to be exercised. It is very much dependent on the context. Doctors are able to withdraw active treatment if it becomes apparent that survival will not happen and in such cases the questions of ‘dignity’ and ‘comfort’ become over-riding. The medical profession recommends that lawyers should not to be too restrictive in drafting ADs as to do so can ultimately prevent the doctors exercising their professional judgement as to what is right in the circumstances. Clinicians are skilled and experienced in such decisions and have a professional duty to provide the best possible end-of-life care. Working with the Attorney or

other appointed person the doctor can tailor the care in each specific case to provide the best last hours or days of a person’s life. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are always pleased to see our cats and kittens leave for loving new homes but especially so when the cat(s) in question have come into care and, because of their age/health, we believe they will be with us for some time. When Stephanie was contacted to take Pebbles and Mudge into care (two 16 year old cats whose owner had recently died), she had concerns that once with us they would have to wait a long time before someone was prepared to give them a new home. To receive a telephone call the same day from a person who wanted older cats and did not mind what colour or sex providing they were healthy, was really good news for these delightful cats. They hardly had time to settle in, go for their vet check and be vaccinated before they were off to their new home together.

Interest has also been shown in Trinnie, a lovely little tabby and white cat, 13 years young who requires medication for hyperthyroidism and, fingers crossed, she will have left for a new home when you read this article. Hyperthyroidism is quite common in older cats (Spice, one of my older girls, has recently been diagnosed with this condition) but it is easily treated. However, it takes a little time to get under control and if, like Spice, your cat does not like taking tablets a little guile has to be used. Hiding the tablet in some meat has solved the problem for us.

Plans are now well advanced for our Christmas Sale in the St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham on 17th November and we hope that lots of our friends and supporters will be able to join us there.

Adam and Eve, brother and sister, 5 months old - owner could not afford to keep

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Rescue and rehoming

Are you considering a new pet? There are many local rescue centres inundated with animals requiring homes, however before embarking on a rescue crusade there are things you need to consider: COST - You will need to feed/vaccinate/worm/de-flea/neuter/cover unexpected vets bills and make a donation to the rescue centre. CARE - You will need to provide adequate walks and play for whatever breed or species you take on COMPANY - Consider how much time you will be able to spend with your new pet when they first arrive, a puppy that has just come from a large litter going into a home where he will be completely alone for hours on end will probably become withdrawn and may develop separation anxiety issues. VACCINATIONS - Starting at £60 for the complete puppy course (2 injections 2 weeks apart) this vaccination gives protection from some of the most deadly canine diseases including Lepotospirosis which can be transferred to humans. Starting from £57 for the complete kitten course (2 injections 3 weeks apart) this vaccination give protection against Flu, Enteritis and Leukaemia all of which can be fatal. WORMING - Essential for puppies and kittens from around 2 weeks of age when still with mum, then at 10-12 weeks (around the time of 2nd Vaccination) then monthly until 6 months, at which point a 3 monthly regime should be continued for life. Many worm species pose a risk to human health. FLEA CONTROL - Also an important, on-going part of responsible pet ownership, monthly flea and tick control is essential for happy healthy pets. Cost approx. £30/month (20kg dog) – fleas and tick, £23/month for cat – including worm control and mite control INSURANCE - An essential, though not yet legal, requirement of dog/cat ownership. You need to read the small print of each policy to ensure you are getting the cover you require. Beware of 12 month policies, often cheaper monthly costs but will only cover a condition for a year, after which you will not be able to make further claims. Rough guide to cost – Labrador puppy in Sheringham £30/month, Domestic Short Haired kitten living in Sheringham £15/month. Having talked mostly about puppies and kittens above, the same applies for any age pet you may take on, they will still need regular vaccinations, worming etc despite their age. Insurance costs will vary for older animals. RESCUING - If you have considered all the costs and other implications of becoming a pet owner and are still keen to go ahead it can be very rewarding, a companion to come home to or a great way to get some exercise with your dog. Rescue centres are often full to capacity of various breeds, usually a lot of Staffy type dogs are available. This particular breed make very loyal companions though as with any breed or species their compatibility with other dogs, cats or children in the family needs to be investigated prior to adoption. Often these animals have been dumped, neglected or abused by previous owners leaving them scared and vulnerable. With little history available about their past it can be difficult to assess their temperament without a little trial and error, usually after a few weeks in the rescue centre the staff have the measure of these animals and will make recommendations about their ideal home and situation. Be guided by advice – not how cute they are!

01263 822293

PLEASE – do not be tempted to buy or rescue a pet as a Christmas or birthday present for someone. All too often these animals end up in rescue themselves as un-wanted gifts or unsuitable pets. Many rescue centres have a non-rehoming policy over the weeks leading up to Christmas for this very reason.

A Handful of Magic at Sheringham Little Theatre Fee, fye, fo, fum – the panto’s back in Sheringham!

And this year’s seasonal offering sees Jack and The Beanstalk burst on to stage in a frenzy of festive foliage at the Little Theatre.

Opening on Wednesday 5 December and running until Saturday 5 January, the production promises more than a touch of magic for young and old alike.

Written and directed by West End star Killian Donnelly, one of the male leads in Phantom of the Opera, it will offer a stunning selection box of singing, dancing and jolly panto japes, according to theatre director Debbie Thompson.

“We are so excited to have Killian’s involvement this year – it should be a truly outstanding show,” she said. “We have some wonderful special effects planned - which we are, of course, keeping under wraps - and have signed up a superb cast who will really bring the whole performance to life.”

Stepping back into the spotlight at the Little Theatre will be delicious dame Russel Hicken. This year he’ll be slipping into his colourful collection of outrageous costumes as Molly Coddle, Jack’s mother.

And joining him on stage will be Cornelius Garret, playing Jack’s father. Cornelius is also returning to the venue, having played the role of the evil Abanazar back in 2010.

“We have some new faces too,” said Debbie. “We are lucky enough to have Jonathan Broderick with us this year, playing Jack, and Rachel Waring, as Jill. Both these young ac-

tors have recently graduated from drama school. Then we have hilarious double act James Lavender and Benedict Martin, who will be taking on the roles of Ralph and Snotmill.”

This year’s spectacular set will be designed once again by Matt Nunn. Ron and Charlotte Sayer are returning to oversee the music and Kate Withers will be back to create a fantastic collection of costumes.

“We cannot wait to get started on the rehearsals,” admitted Debbie. “Last year’s pantomime, Dick Whittingham, was marvellous, and we hope this year’s show will be just as much fun.”

Jack and the Beanstalk runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 5 to Saturday, January 5. For more information or for tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

- A Separate Peace. By Tom Stoppard Some years after the end of the Second World War, in the early hours of the morning, a Mr. Brown arrives at the Beechwood Nursing Home and admits himself to a private ward. He is not ill but seems happy to be in hospital. What is his secret and what does he want? His nurse, Maggie, gradually gets him to open up and we learn why Mr. Brown yearns for his ‘separate peace’. A warm and sometimes amusing mystery centred on the relationship between a stranger and his nurse

- The Burbot. Autumn’s upon us...

It has been a marvellous year if you’re a slug or snail, but for the rest of wildlife and for us gardeners included it has been unpredictable and far from ideal. The strange start to the year adversely affected our frogs as warm water encouraged early spawning, only to be scuppered by the torrential downpours of colder rainwater in mid to late spring. Our butterfly numbers have also had a massive decline this year due to the same weather, and many ground-nesting species including underground bees have had similarly poor breeding success.

Despite the weather, it has been a very busy year for Barry and Rob’s Gardening Services. We diligently work in all weathers (excepting a few jobs!) to offer a professional and friendly garden creation and maintenance service. Our success however is down to our wonderful clients and gratitude must go to them for offering us many interesting challenges with much reward from the services we have offered. We have put together wildlife ponds, erected numerous types of fences, tidied borders, laid turf, planted shrubs and flowers, mowed and treated lawns, made

vegetable plots including raised beds, planted and maintained orchards, trimmed hedges, felled and pruned trees as well as hung bird boxes and provided many people with useful advice on wildlife-friendly gardening.

From little acorns...

It has now been over a year since our first appearance in local magazines and since we first started our new business. November is the time of year that most things in our gardens and around our countryside are coming to a close: annuals have completed their lifecycles, perennials and shrubs have all produced seed and berries, and birds are beginning to flock around our gardens. Jays are very busy caching acorns for the winter and look overhead for Pink-Footed Geese arriving from Greenland.

Grow mighty Oaks...

Autumn is very much upon us and now is the ideal time to look at planning for a new garden year. It is an exceptional time to think what you want for your garden in the coming year – do you need new fencing or hedging to help divide

or border your garden; would you prefer a classic, formal look or a less formal setting? Perhaps a secret garden or secluded oasis where you can relax from the stresses of life?

All this and lots more can be achieved with a little foresight, planning and know-how, and now is a great time to start.

Barry and Rob’s Gardening Services can offer single garden jobs such as garden clearance, landscaping, hedges or fencing, to the smaller jobs such as single border tidy-ups, fruit tree pruning, leaf sweeping, pond clearance or small trees. Alternatively we can offer a regular visit tailored to your needs – weekly, fortnightly or monthly as required. We pride ourselves on offering a professional service which fits with our clients’ needs. Hopefully the upcoming gardening year will be far better for our gardens and wildlife and we will be basking in glorious sunshine next summer, not paddling like ducks.

Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society Voices Young and Old join together for Britten Saint Nicolas

On Saturday 8 December at 7.30pm Cromer Parish Church will resound to the wonderful and miraculous story of Saint Nicolas (better known in England as Santa Claus or Father Christmas) as told in Benjamin Britten’s witty and dramatic Cantata. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, directed by Nathan Waring, mark the centenary year of Britten’s birth as part of Britten 100, celebrating the life and work of the great composer. They will be joined for this performance by the Jiminies from Gresham’s Prep School. This is particularly apt as Benjamin Britten was himself a pupil at Gresham’s School.

This concert takes place close to St Nicolas Day (December 6) which, whilst little celebrated in the UK, is a major feast day in much of mainland Europe, particularly Sweden and Germany. In Cromer’s twin town of Nidda, St Nicolas brings gifts for the children on 6 December not 25 December as is the tradition here.

Tickets priced £10 on the door and from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office 01263 822347. For further details please visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk

Concert Notes: St Nicolas was the first major work which Britten composed specifically for non-professional forces. The sometimes jaunty, sometimes dramatic music speeds us through the life of this wonderful saint from birth , through dramatic shipwreck to Palestine and onwards to be bishop of Myra and then prison. And then the miracles and the dramatic high of the cantata "Nicolas andthe Pickled Boys". The cantata brilliantly and entertainingly portrays the devotion, piety and marvellous works of the man we now know as Santa Claus or Father Christmas.

Ladies Captain’s Charity Day

111 golfers responded to an invitation by the Ladies Captain at Sheringham Golf Club, Lesley Goodman, to join her to raise money for The Ladies Captains Charity, ‘The Friends of Kelling Hospital’.

The Ladies welcomed the Gentlemen and some guests to play on a Tuesday which is normally the preserve of Ladies only! The weather was fantastic with sunshine and little wind, perfect golfing conditions. The views from the course were stunning. Sheringham was at its best.

Over the season Lesley has attracted sponsors from local businesses who, for a small donation, advertised their businesses on the course at the Ladies key events. These sparked a great deal of interest amongst the players and visitors and provided prizes and donations. Crayford and Abbs very generously sponsored a Hole-in-One prize of a Nissan Micra, which was played for on Tuesday. One player, Steve Hudson, only just missed the hole which would have won him the car! But we all enjoyed trying for it.

After the golf there was a putting challenge, various raffles and the day ended with a

much needed space so that patients have somewhere to go, away from their beds, during their rehabilitation.

The event including the sponsorship, raised £2150. Lesley would like to thank everyone who helped on the day and who contributed to this wonderful result. The Competition results were:

First - M Read, F Spink R Linge & N McFarquar

It's been a few days now since my return from the Camino – St Jean Pied de Port France to Santiago de Compostela Espana- 800 kms in 34 days.

Many have asked the inevitable question 'so how was it?’ Difficult question to answer in one sentence so let me enlighten you with a few details of my journey.

Inspiration originally came from Wilna Wilkinson who walked the same route four years ago, wrote a book and dedicated it to her friend who had cancer. I walk every morning, adore walking especially out in the quiet countryside. I did not envisage the journey as a challenge more through curiosity from Wilna's book.

Seeing Wilna two days before I left, one of the many things she advised was once you've done the first couple of days the rest will be easy. Also, to walk alone.

I left for St Jean on 1 September, walked 34 days non-stop, arriving in Santiago at the beginning of October.

The weight of my rucksack was ten percent of my body weight. One set of clothes to wear, one spare. Wet weather gear, sleeping bag, emergency food, two litres of water, towel, minimum of toiletries etc - after a while the bag became part of me.

So, halfway through the trip I left my walking companions and ventured off on my own. This itself felt quite a scary step to take, being totally in charge, totally responsible for myself, for everything I did or did not do. But I soon got used to the routine of looking for the yellow arrows and other signs of the Camino. Walking alone you can talk or not talk to your neighbours. You can stop and look around, you can do what you like and not be answerable to anyone! My lone journey after a few days became calmer, less of a panic, not easier but definitely more enjoyable. Wilna was right - walk alone!

Up at 5.45am, leaving half hour later, at times with no breakfast, bag hurriedly packed and then out into the darkness, often stumbling on uneven stony ground until daylight arrived. It felt like I was on an Army route march with no time to take in my surroundings let alone smell the roses! A shift occurred when I was talking with Renata, a 74 year young German lady, who ended our conversation by saying ''Rebekah, you need to walk your own journey and not that of someone else''.

Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority Reference no. 432055 Principal- Paul Myers

All along the route I met some wonderful folk of all ages, of all nationalities, from all around the globe. A few spoke no English yet managed to converse using hand signals and facial expressions. Familiar faces came and went only to be met up with again further along the route. I saw amazing scenes where I felt I was looking down from the top of the world on to stunning countryside vast and wide.

Sheringham Independent #355 10th November 2012

I walked for days alongside tall gentle windbines, along near dry canals, along huge busy new motorways with lorries of enormous size. I trudged through cities where with backpack, sticks, tanned legs and dirty boots I felt very much like a homeless bag lady amongst the well dressed hustling and bustling to work or to the glitzy shops. I trudged through forests of eucalyptus trees, oak trees with trunks too big to get your arms around, open fields of newly cut corn, areas of maize and vineyards that appeared to go on for miles. Through many a farm yard where underfoot I dodged vivid green slimy cow dung! Over large slippery rocks that made a bridge over the streams of rushing water underneath.

Almost everyone en route - fellow pilgrims, well weathered farmers and wives, shop keepers, children, the general public - all gave the usual greeting ''Buen Camino'' - good journey.

Often I would come across monuments large and small dedicated to those, for whatever reason, who had died along the way. Even a story board of one particular area which alongside the Spanish words was written again in Braille.

I stayed in Refugios (hostels) where prices varied from 5 to 10 euros per night. Some had 'mod cons' such as washing machines/dryers but most laundry rooms consisted of a couple of cold water taps, often outside, for washing your clothes, which were then hung outside if you were lucky to get space on the linen line. Some Refugios provided a communal supper otherwise there were restaurants that served a special pilgrim menu of 3-4 courses, wine and bread for 9 - 12 euros. As in France one was hardly ever served more than one vegetable, chips were plentiful. Breakfast cereal, unless bought from a shop, seemed non existent in Spain so my first meal of the day consisted of thick milky coffee and delicious pastries, lunch large filled baguettes. With three meals a day I still managed to lose 5 kilos!

Most of the refugios are run by volunteers of all ages, from various countries, most who have previously walked the Camino. They worked relentlessly 24/7 for a whole month. One could only stay at the hostel if you produced your pilgrim’s passport which

Sullivan

Where hair care is still an art

would be stamped and dated when you paid for your very inexpensive night's stay.

Sleeping was difficult most nights with so many people coming and going at different times. Lights off and on, whispering, rustling, you were lucky to get 4-5 hours decent sleep, sometimes none at all if next to a couple of snorers! A hostel might have 300 beds or maybe just 15. Occasionally you had use of lockers for your backpack, one hostel even had a sign above stating 'Remember not all pilgrims are pilgrims'! - could that be a sign of the times?

I was incredibly lucky with the weather, only encountering two days of rain where I was soaked through to my underwear.

One hundred and fifty kms from Santiago someone happen to mention 'we have only six days to go!' What an impact that short sentence had! Suddenly there was excitement in the air! Relief no doubt for the walking wounded. Much talk of what we'd like to eat or do when we reach our destination. Some drooled desperately of a decent haircut or nice shoes to wear or having a hot bath or eating a curry - luxuries that we had not had since leaving our homes.

Day 34 finally arrived and here I was in Santiago! The air was heavy with excitement mainly coming from the pilgrims meeting up with other pilgrims. Families meeting up with their sons/daughters, partners meeting up with their spouses, all was so, so emotional. Many wounded seen walking into this famous square, two pilgrims in fact with plaster casts on. My walking pal Subagh and I managed to catch not only the Pilgrims mass at the cathedral but the 'Botafumeiro' the incense burning ritual which was so incredible.

Back to the original question - 'how was it?' The Camino for me was a journey like life itself. With many ups and downs, stony and smooth roads, dark and light days, emotions of highs and lows. I came also to realise how little a pilgrim must have had or needed in his life. How little we really need. Life for many of us has become one of discontent. We take so many things for granted - people, daily life, nature, possessions, food and so on. To have good friends, compassion towards others, be happy with what we have and not what we have not, must be a good start towards being rich in life.

Affirmation seen written whilst en route - ''less is more''.

My thanks to my sponsors who have helped me raised over 900 euros for Breast Cancer and Diabetes charities

and headed to Finisterre. Finisterre - known as the end of the world - the real icing on the Camino cake! What a joy it was to visit this fishing town with its sea of crashing waves, small boats, excellent inexpensive fish restaurants and above all - peace. I sat on the harbour for quite some time just looking out to my first sight of the sea. How did I feel? Very emotional, near to tears. realising also just how lucky I was to have just completed an event that some would love to do but can only dream about. I was indeed blessed during the 34 days with no knee, feet or blister problems. My only health issues were bed bug bites which thankfully have now fully gone.

Kelling Probus Club

On Thursday 18 October Chairman Terry Penrose welcomed 25 members and one guest. He asked them to stand in silence to remember Vic Allen who had been Chairman twice and also served as secretary.

After lunch, Probus member Dr Michael Bennett entertained us with an impromptu account of his time working in Trinidad in the 1950s during the last days of colonialism.

A chance remark by his Professor at Kings College had led him to the London office of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. With nearly 100 ex-patriot scientists, it was one of the world’s leading agricultural institutes, doing research into a range of tropical crops. One of those projects concerned sugarcane, and it had been decided to recruit a specialist in colloidal chemistry Michael’s own field for his PhD.

He had just married Mollie, who was a King’s 22

College physiotherapist and they willingly took the opportunity to work in such a prestigious outpost of the British Empire.

In 1954 there were no direct flights to the Caribbean so they sailed for 14 days across the Atlantic in SS Golfito, a Fyffe Line banana boat – of shallow draught and without stabilisers! On board they struck up a friendship with Clyde Walcott, the West Indian cricket hero, and his family, who kindly showed them around Barbados for three days and introduced them to the problems of segregation.

Professionally, Michael found that the sugar industry was largely unexplored by his specialism, and he was able to make rapid progress. Mollie had been recruited into the local Health Authority to help in the polio epidemic.

Socially he and Mollie were enjoying life with two quite separate circles of friends – ex-patriot colonial Academia and West Indian

medics – which, perhaps, would have been unthinkable ten years earlier.

He recounted some amusing tales of his experiences in this bygone age. During his second three-year term at the College, as Trinidad approached Independence, things began to change, and when Michael got an offer to join Tate & Lyle in the UK, they decided, with regrets, that this was the time to bring their young family home.

Michael was roundly applauded for his entertaining insight into the dying days of Caribbean colonialism.

Three new members, Bruce Bedwell, Geoff Goodman and Bill Day, gave brief introductory talks on their ‘previous lives’.

NB Please note the changed date of the next Probus meeting which will be held on Thurs 22nd November - a week later than usual. Nick Grice of Sheringham Lifeboat will be our speaker. Please phone Kevin Clingo (01263 824624) if you would like to join us.

Restorative approaches in Norfolk

In Norfolk we believe that restorative approaches work by building relationships, maintaining relationships and repairing relationships when harm has been caused.

Restorative approaches support emotional and social development and literacy and equip people with problem solving skills and the ability to manage conflict when it occurs.

Restorative approaches help build respect, responsibility, resolution and reintegration. In broad terms, Restorative Approaches constitute an approach to challenging behaviour, which puts repairing harm done to relationships and people, over and above the need for assigning blame and dispensing punishment (Wright, 1999).

Many people will behave and work in a restorative way without recognising it. This is because restorative principles underpin a variety of different practice models and techniques. If you are working with people, there is a high level of support and a high level of control. You have a clear bottom line about what you can and can’t do, and everyone involved has an equal voice in resolving an issue.

Restorative principles are: • Respect • Responsibility • Reflection • Working ‘with’ people • Giving everyone involved an equal voice • Fair and consistent process • Honesty • Inclusion

• Empowering people to be part of solving the problems they face • Clear bottom line

Restorative approaches provide us with the foundation to build, maintain and repair relationships positively with families, communities, staff and partners. By working together with people, in equal measures of high support and high control, we can achieve our aim to develop responsibility and ownership, and from that, sustainable families and sustainable communities.

Norfolk County Council Children’s Services is the lead partner in a multi-agency partnership that aims to establish Norfolk as a restorative County by 2015.

There has been significant progress since 2010 and the benefits of restorative approaches have been shown in a number of local arenas including criminal justice, education, communities and social care.

The outcomes that have been experienced as a consequence of restorative activity in the county has prompted Norfolk County Council to announce their commitment to becoming a restorative authority. These outcomes include:

• Reduction in Looked After Children in the Youth Justice System by 52% • 19% reduction in Police call-outs to Residential Homes • Reduction in school exclusions

• Improved school attendance rates • Improved school attainment • Reduction in persistent absentees • Improved victim satisfaction rates • Reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour • Empowered communities • Reduction in first-time entrants to the youth justice system

There are a lot of exciting developments happening across Norfolk to embed restorative approaches in all our work with children, young people, families and communities. Norfolk is seen as a leader both nationally and internationally in the field of restorative approaches. We have been gathering lots of evidence about the impact and will continue to do so.

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm Project

In response to the recent news that Statoil and Statkraft have acquired the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm project, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business Enterprise and Economic Development and Deputy Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “North Norfolk District Council welcomes this exciting announcement. The council has had an excellent working relationship with Statoil and Statkraft over a number of years during the building of the Sheringham Shoal offshore windfarm. That project is

Grumpy Old Man Serving our best interests!

I am going to tread into a dodgy area this issue – local politics! (universal groans from all!) Looking back, it was a sad day when political parties took over Local Government and sadder still when it was decided to pay councillors attendance allowance, enabling people who would previously not have voluntarily served to take time off from their employment for Council duties and to enjoy a paid hobby.

Prior to that, councillors and aldermen (remember them?) were independent people with altruistic principles who stood for office to serve their fellows, concerned to put something back into the communities in which they had grown and prospered. They were, in the main, capable, well-respected, unfettered

by dogma and earned their reputations through their actions, mostly still manifest in fine public buildings, parks and amenities of which they were proud progenitors.

Nowadays men and women of this calibre stand very little chance of being elected to office as independent because people are conditioned to vote for political parties by the weight of expensive, organised campaigning. Joining a party entails sacrificing individual independence in order to get elected and becoming part of a faction, which consequently means if it is a minority group you won’t get anything constructive done. If it is a majority group and does achieve something, no individual gets any kudos, nor the blame if it subsequently goes wrong.

It is hardly the recipe to spur people on.

Instead it crushes ambition. The system is unlikely to change because those long-serving councillors enjoying their part time second careers in Local Government get too comfortable and are not obliged to retire in rotation after a set number of terms in office in order to make way for fresh faces and new thinking. This is a major cause of voter apathy and an obstacle to progress.

I rest my case and await howls of indignation which must surely ensue.

Sheringham Society Coffee Morning

It was standing room only at the last coffee morning when we had a wonderful talk from Christine Adams. Mrs. Adams is the niece-in-law of May Savidge, an extremely feisty lady who, when her ancient hall house in Ware was threatened with demolition to make way for a roundabout, decided to more the whole house, brick by brick and beam by beam down to Wells-next-the-Sea. She was 59 when she began the exercise and, although she lived till her 80s, it was still unfinished when she died. It was left to Christine and her then-husband to take on the task and finish it.

There was no coffee morning in October - instead we took a trip to Wells to look round this fascinating house.

The next coffee morning will be held at St. John Hall, Wyndham Street, Sheringham on Thursday, 29 November, when the speaker will be Bishop David Leake.

Bishop David was the Bishop of Argentina for many years, originally going there as a missionary. He and his wife, Rachel, raised their three children living with the native Indians with no electricity, no car and living miles from civilisation. It should be a most interesting talk and I hope it will be well supported.

Admission is £2 which includes tea or coffee and homemade cakes. Everyone is welcome.

Over the last 16 years we have carried out annual house-to-house collections on behalf of the above Appeal in the Holt Road, The Meadows, Greenlands, Shepherd Close, Trentham Drive, Orchard Close and Meadow Way areas of Sheringham.

As we will not be continuing with these duties, we would like to sincerely thank all the kind residents in these areas for their wonderful and loyal support over the years. Councillor Slams Poor Mobile Coverage in Sheringham

Sheringham Councillor Richard Smith is calling for a solution to be found after a phone mast in Sheringham has been dismantled - leaving locals without vital coverage.

The Vodafone mast at the former fire station site has been dismantled to make way for the new Tesco development. However, there is currently no replacement leaving the town reliant on two other distant transmitters.

Commenting Cllr Richard Smith said: “A lack of mobile coverage is not only a nuisance for residents but it could result in life or death situations if emergency workers can’t contact each other. The tragedy in this case is a lack of joined up thinking between the County Council, Vodafone and Tesco. With a bit of forward planning this disruption could have been easily prevented. Instead we are left with a situation where our mobiles are virtually useless in parts of the town.”

A Vodafone representative has commented on their customer forum that a replacement site has been built, but still has to be connected. The representative also goes on to say ‘we’re working on something temporary”.

“I would urge Vodafone to resolve this issue as a matter of urgency as they could well face a lot more disgruntled customers if the outage continues,” said Richard.

Local knitting enthusiasts have been busy putting their talent to good use by creating knitted or crocheted poppies in time for Remembrance Day.

Anglia Funeral Services are raising money for the Royal British Legion by offering these handcrafted poppies for a donation to the charity.

“We hope people will come along and support the armed forces and their families by making a donation for one of these colourful and original poppies, expertly crafted by generous members of the local community, We would like to thank everyone in the community, for responding to our appeal and donating wool or giving up their time to make the poppies” said James Nelson from Anglia Funeral Services.

The woollen poppies are available at Peter Taylor Funeral Services, Haysel House, Station Road, Holt, NR25 6BS from 29th October 2012.

New Chairs and Flooring Works

St. Peter’s Church, Sheringham, is pleased to confirm that we have been granted a Faculty by the Diocese to replace the Church chairs, many of which have woodworm, and to sand and varnish the parquet flooring. The works are likely to be done during the first three weeks of January 2013. We are very grateful for a legacy to cover the cost of the chairs and flooring works.

We will have to remove all the old wooden kneelers which means that the fabric/embroidered ‘hassacks’ (kneelers) are no longer suitable. Volunteers have agreed to use some of the hassocks to make up thicker kneelers, some can be used in other parts of the church and some could be used to make up a collage, in place of the existing hanging which will be returned to the museum.

If anyone made up an old kneeler or knows anyone who did and thinks they may like to have it back, they should speak to me as soon as possible. David Rivett, Churchwarden, Tel 01263 821973
