All in a day’s filming for the ladies and gents of Shannock Court ... Way back in 2009 the BBC approached the residents of Shannock Court in Sheringham to ask if they had any willing volunteers who would be prepared to take part in the filming of a one off drama for Channel 4 entitled Every Day. The willing volunteers were filmed sitting on a bus and were each given £30 for the two hours of filming.
The programme stars Shirley Henderson of Bridget Jones Diaries (Jude) and Harry Potter fame (Moaning Murtle) and over two years later has only just hit our television screens (15 November).

All in a day’s filming for the ladies and gents of Shannock Court... continued from front cover...
Sharon Bowen from Shannocks Court recalls... ‘Shirley Henderson is the nicest of people and didn`t mind giving autographs or taking photos and she filmed with the producer’s children.
The steam train is scheduled to leave Sheringham at 12.40pm, and will run twice to Holt and back while passengers tuck into a mouth-watering 3-course menu including (of course) roast turkey. Salmon in white wine and broccoli and stilton crumble are also offered. The price of £42.50 per person includes the train fare. The interesting wine selection features a sparkling Prosecco, and wine prices start at just £14.95 a bottle.
So if you don’t want to visit the Enchanted Grotto on one of the Poppy Line’s famous Santa Specials, why not book up for the lunch train instead? Places are limited, so don’t delay – call 01263 820800 or visit www.nnrailway.co.uk.
The coach was Sanders - they were very happy as they had been paid for a full day shoot so they took us for a ride to Weybourne after filming which was a bonus. And they did say if they were ever filming and needed extras again they would call on us...so we must have been good! It was an exciting experience for the ladies and gents and a day that will never be forgotten...we will probably blink and not see ourselves on the TV but for anyone who watched the programme we took the bus from Holt going to the prison to visit John Simm who is the father’ Autographs available on request I’m sure!!

Norfolk Recruit Sets Sail on a New Career
A 20-year-old recruit from Holt is on course for a life on the ocean wave after completing the first phase of his Royal Navy training at HMS Raleigh, in Cornwall.
Trainee Air Engineering Technician Jack Burt arrived at the gates of the Royal Navy training establishment in September. During a 10 week intensive course Jack and his fellow recruits have been taught the basic skills they will rely upon throughout their Service careers. The training culminates in the passing-out-parade attended by families and friends.
The former pupil of Sheringham High School worked in a bar before embarking on his Naval career. Jack said: “I joined the Royal Navy for a respected career with good opportunities.
Initial naval training is very hard. It felt terrible doing it, but to complete the course feels great. The highlight for me was the military exercise on Dartmoor and the physical training, such as the obstacle and assault courses.”
With the first phase of his training complete Jack will transfer to HMS Sultan, in Hampshire. There he will learn how to carry out scheduled maintenance as well as preand post-flight servicing and inspections for the Fleet Air Arm's helicopters.
The Royal Navy's Initial Naval Training course is underpinned by nine Core Maritime Skills that are the foundations of naval life and underpin operational effectiveness. Recruits are taught the basics of Naval discipline and customs. They learn about navigation and are given the chance to take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a

waterborne orienteering exercise. With Royal Navy personnel playing a vital role in Afghanistan and other land-based operations, recruits undergo training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field. Fitness is a key component of the training and is delivered using a disciplined method of military fitness which focuses on developing co-ordination and individual physical strength and endurance. As the course progresses the recruits take part in three extended exercises to test their skills and understanding of the principles they have been taught.
Details of career opportunities within the Royal Navy are available online at www.royalnavy.mod.uk or by calling the Recruitment Line on 08456 07 55 55.
Ellie Farrow would like to thank all the wonderful people in Sheringham who responded to the ads and posters for her lost little cat, CC - ‘we just wanted to say how much we appreciated the support and how the town pulled together to help us look for one very special little guy’.
CC has now been found – sadly it looks like he may have suffered a heart attack and died on the night he went missing. Sleep well, little man.

MP for North Norfolk takes to the shop floor MP Norman Lamb left his day job behind and took to the shop floor in a bid to encourage more people to volunteer at the Barnardo’s shop at 25 Market Place, North Walsham earlier this month.
The North Norfolk MP rolled up his sleeves and volunteered at the store as part of national Make a Difference Day. It’s the UK’s biggest day of volunteering, and provides opportunities for thousands of people to volunteer across the country.
The theme of this year’s event is: “Everyone has a skill they can use to help others. What can you do?” and although the event’s official date was Saturday 27 October, activities still took place across the UK at the beginning of November.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “Make a Difference Day is a great initiative to encourage people to use their skills to help others. We can all do something, big or small. It was a real pleasure to help out with the volunteers at Barnardo’s in North Walsham and if you have been thinking about volunteering I would encourage you to get in touch.”

“We always welcome new volunteers to our friendly team in North Walsham. There are roles to suit all and you can do as much or as little as you can manage. If you have time on your hands and would like to get out and about, please do pop in for more information, or visit the Barnardo’s website at

Raphael Neill started with Stead Mutton Griggs in February 2011 and quickly became a familiar face in the office excelling in his role as an Architectural Technologist.
Having responsibility for several of our high profile projects including work at Gresham School and Sheringham's own Little Theatre, Raph developed the company's reputation as an honest, dependable organisation of talented Architects. Earlier this year Raph joined a group of SMG staff members in an expedition to scale the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales. The trip was a success and raised around £1,000 for our Managing Director's chosen charity which offers help to Ugandan Orphans.
Sadly for SMG, Raph has recently left the practice having been offered a place including partial bursary for fees on an MSc course at Cranfield University studying Water Management, Community Water and Sanitation. The course started on 1 October and will prepare him for his plan to provide safe, clean drinking water and sanitation in countries where these facilities cannot be taken for granted.
We all wish Raph the very best in this life-changing plan which has been his ambition for some considerable time. Sheringham Independent #356 24th November 2012

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time I mentioned someone had shown an interest in Trinnie, our little cat with thyroid problems. I am therefore happy to report that Trinnie has now left for a loving new home, has settled in well and enjoying being back in a home environment. Her new family are happy to give her the one tablet she needs each day to keep the hyperthyroidism under control. Good news also for Adam and Eve the little cats in the photograph as they too have left for a new home together. In the last edition of the North Walsham Times the Miramar Veterinary Centre in Sheringham had placed a very large advertisement which covered everything people need to consider before giving a home to a new pet. The article was relevant to other animals as well as cats but did cover everything people need to think about. Several of these items will have already been provided for cats and kittens that we re-home (vet check, treatment for fleas/worms, vaccination, worming, micro chipping and neutering). However, any ongoing expenses will be the responsibility of the new owner. For over 10 years we have had a stall at the “Craft and Things” Fairs in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham. Over the last year we have found that with the present economic situation people were less likely to buy the goods we have for sale. We therefore decided that we need to look for other ways and venues to raise
money for the cats and advised Sally who organised the Fairs of our decision. As a consequence she decided to discontinue the sales at North Walsham next year. We thank her for her support over the years and wish her well at her other venues. We would also like to thank all our friends and customers over the years for their support. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit Matilda was a stray and needs www.cats.org.uk/northa home as the only cat walsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number. If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Action for Children - Quiz Fundraiser
David Starling hosted another quiz in aid of Action for Children at St Andrews Methodist Church earlier this month. Always a good laugh, the task for all the teams is to avoid wearing the odd hats, compulsory for teams scoring least in each round. Over £330 was raised by the eight teams, the raffle and various sponsors’ donations. The next one is scheduled to be hosted in February - a fun evening guaranteed in the middle of winter. Pop into Stalings for exact date when booked.
A sorrowful "MacTail"
Do you remember "H" our last "Tail"? Well he finally found his dream home and even has a new girlfriend in Lily, a lovely fawn greyhound. This "Tail" is just as sad as "H's" in that a beautiful blue male greyhound living happily with his best friend Judy, a female greyhound, suddenly had his life completely turned upside down when both he and Judy lost their home and had to be re-homed separately. Mac found the change very difficult, lost weight, became an even bigger baby than he was already and his new family did not meet his needs.
Mac is now back with us and is still the very lovely boy we first homed (albeit thinner). He is housetrained, very affectionate, needs lots of TLC and will be the best friend a similarly loving person can have. Mac will be quite clingy at first, and probably later, but this is an endearing characteristic. If there is a lonely female greyhound out there then Mac would be the perfect pal, not that we are a dating agency at all!
If you think you could give Mac a loving home and would like to meet him, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797 Sheringham Independent #356 24th November 2012

“A hidden Cromer gem
“Outstanding dining experience
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club Chairman Ken Macnish welcomed two newly-enrolled members and one visitor at our lunch on 6 November. We enjoyed the meal supplied by the Links Hotel, West Runton and then moved into the function room for coffee and the talk.
The presentation was by David Morton, who is a mechanical engineer by profession and mainly works in the automotive industry. The talk took the form of a quiz with questions ranging across a technical spectrum which included GPS satellites, microwave ovens and motor vehicles. David’s session was well-received and a vote of thanks was proposed by David Paton.
The next lunch will be our Christmas event, to which partners are also invited. As advance booking is required, it is too late to join in at the time you are reading this. Nevertheless, we invite enquiries for the new year from prospective members and anyone who might be interested in coming to present an after-lunch talk.
If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome. Sheringham Independent #356 24th November 2012

For a small town with just over 7000 residents we can boast more than our fair share of church denominations and religious institutions. These churches have thriving communities whose clergy and lay ministry teams work within the local community to support those in need of spiritual and pastoral care. Most of Sheringham’s churches have their own local projects in this regard but ‘Churches Together in Sheringham’ pools the talents and resources of all the Sheringham much needed, local churches in order to provide initiatives.
One such initiative is ‘The Stable Door Housing Trust’. This Trust has been in operation since 1993 and has grown into a sizeable Housing Association with seven properties available for rent by local people. Raising the funds to purchase these houses, with the help of grants, has been, and is, an ongoing, mammoth endeavour and a tremendous achievement for all those who are involved.
When the Trust allocates tenancies, it gives priority to families with children but it must be properties are let on a short term stressed that basis. The Trust cannot provide a tenancy for life as that is not its primary objective. Contact to the Trust can be made through Gill Wilson on 01263 822271.
This last summer saw another successful ‘Churches Together’ project that attracted around 200 children and young people across four days of activities at the end of August. ‘Beach Life’ is designed to offer fun and games, arts and crafts, music and an opportunity to learn more about Jesus Christ. It was attended this year by local children and young people, holiday-makers and visitors to Sheringham, ranging in age from babies and toddlers to 17 year olds. ‘Beach Life’ is an annual event, no matter what the weather! If you missed out this year why not make a date in your diary for next year’s ‘Beach Life’ event, which will take place between the
27 You can find out - 30 August 2013. more about this event at www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk
Another recent project undertaken by ‘Churches Together’ is the Cromer and Sheringham Food Bank. Over thirteen million people in the UK now fall below the poverty line. People in our communities form part of this statistic. These vulnerable people would go hungry each day if they could not rely on the Food Bank. The Food Bank operates through the Roman Catholic and Methodist Churches in both Sheringham and Cromer. This important initiative will only succeed in the long term if it has the support of local people. You can help by bringing tinned and long life foodstuffs to the dropoff centres either in Cromer or Sheringham. Foodstuffs can be left in St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham on Sundays between the hours of 10am -12 noon, or at any time on Wednesdays.
The Food Bank distribution point for Sheringham is St. Joseph’s Church Hall, Cromer Road. Distribution of food stuffs will commence in Sheringham on 28 November and will continue to operate on all subsequent Wednesdays throughout the year.
In Cromer, food supplies can be left at Our Lady of Refuge Church Hall, Overstrand Road, on Sundays between the hours of 9.00am -
10.30am and on Wednesdays and Fridays between the hours of 9.00am and 10.00am. Alternatively, food may be left in Cromer Methodist Church Hall on Thursdays between 1.30pm and 3.00pm. To find out how you can support this project you can phone 07826 376343 or make contact by email at: info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk
If you wish to find out more about other ‘Churches Together’ initiatives in Sheringham you are welcome to attend the group’s Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm in St Peter’s Church on Thursday, 22 November. This year the meeting will be followed by a special ‘Service of Thanksgiving’ to celebrate our local churches’ commitment to working and ministering together in our town and beyond. This service will commence after the meeting at approximately 8.00pm. All are welcome. Refreshments will also be available.
And so, what next? Dates for your diary of course!
Last year, the Christmas Tree Festival in St Peter’s Church raised £3,500 for participating charities. This year the festival will be hosted by St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham between 13 and 18 December. You can see further details of the festival on the St. Andrew’s Church website at www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk
Another fun, annual ‘Churches Together’ evening that will raise funds for local charities is soon to take place at St Peter’s Church. The annual ‘Town Christmas Carol Concert’ will take place this year on Thursday, 20 December when church choirs from around the town will join with the Salvation Army Band to provide a cracking, good evening of Christmas band music, carols and songs. See you there!

Songbird Survival
Songbird Survival is a UK wide charity for songbirds made up of members who are lovers of the countryside, gardeners and farmers, ornithologists, conservationists and town and country people throughout Great Britain who are deeply concerned about the effects of increasing predation on songbird populations.
Local member Eddie Bullimore takes up the story...
“Songbird Survival first caught my attention in the local press. Living and working on the land all my life the work they are doing is of great interest to me. Songbird Survival are doing research to find out why we are losing so many birds. As a country man, one of the reasons is
the amount of predators in the countryside. There are other things as well – modern farming, pollution, loss of habitat, roadside verge cutting where nests have been cut through and hedges being cut when the birds need the berries for their winter survival. As far as the owl population is concerned there used to be buildings, stables, barns and cattle sheds which have now been turned into living accommodation.
The farm I look after for conservation has another problem in that there are footpaths which do not get used properly by dog walkers. Dogs are supposed to be kept on leads but not all walkers keep to this rule and I have seen nests of ground birds destroyed. Please do keep your dogs on leads and help to protect our birds. As active members of Songbird Survival we are doing everything we can to help raise money for research. We are very grateful to The North Walsham Times for running our advert in their Free Ads section for saleable items – this has generated items from the general public for us to sell on our table top sales and at our yard sales – thank you to everybody who has donated items to us. So far we have raised over £2000. We are also grateful to
10 am to 5 pm
Steve at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott for the support he gives us.
We would also like to thank our volunteers who give up their time to help us.
On a personal note I make and put up owl boxes and small bird boxes and I have had broods of owls in some of my boxes – tawny owls, barn owls and little owls”
If any readers would like to find out more about Songbird Survival please visit their website www.songbird-survival.org.uk and if you have any saleable items you would like to donate please see their ad on our Free Ads page (Tel 01692 400780)

Looking Forward to Sheringham Christmas Lights Thanks to the ‘Pink’ fundraising party and donations from traders, Sheringham Christmas lights switch-on promises to be a huge success.
The switch on is taking place on Saturday 24 November with events on the stage by the town clock from 3pm and an exciting finale of fire eaters and performers. The lights will be switched on by the Panto Dame, and the school choir - Salvation Army and Baptist Church will be providing entertainment.
The town will look somewhat different this year with the introduction of decorated swags and wreaths covering the shop fronts. Open Door Art will be painting the town clock in a festive theme, and two giant trees will dominate the town centre.
The Pink party raised £450 towards the lights and was only possible with the party organising skills of Jeannie and Erica, donations from the Burlington Hotel, lights and effects by Stephen, music from Mista Splinta, and many other contributors.

BBC Two’s Antiques Road Trip comes to Sheringham
The historic Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat housed in the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre in Sheringham has recently been featured in the popular BBC Two’s Antiques Road Trip.
Around the time the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre was due to open at Easter this year, the Sheringham Society had a visit from the producers of the BBC television series Antiques Road Trip who thought they might like to include a short piece about the Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat in the programme. The team spent most of the morning looking round the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre, getting ideas for the programme.
At 9.05 on the morning of 18 May the TV team arrived and finally departed about 3pm with the TV crew taking many retakes as the RAF had chosen that morning to practise manoeuvres over Sheringham, causing numerous interruptions!
The presenter Mark Hales must have been filmed about 20 times coming through the door saying something along the lines of “Wow, it’s huge, is this really a rowing boat?”
Built in 1894, the lifeboat which is over 34 feet in length and made from oak planking, saved 202 lives in very difficult circumstances. Sheringham Society
Pop Till You Drop This Christmas
A year ago when my novel PRIVATE LONDON was published Random House publicity department phoned me up with the good news that they were going to do a pop up shop for it, over a few days on the main concourse at Victoria Station. I probably should have been delighted but - as I had absolutely no idea what a pop up shop is – I probably mumbled something ungratefully like ‘oh that’s nice’. Now it seems pop up shops are all the rage. Appearing all over North Norfolk with everything from antiques to jewellery and crafts and vintage clothing, ‘lived in and loved in’ as my friend from the Alby Craft centre would call it. Looking out of the window at a driving rain storm the other day, my partner Lynn had an idea. We had been decorating and building wardrobes, with everything piled into one room and she realised just how much ‘little worn’ and vintage clothing, jewellery, accessories, not to mention shoes etc., etc., that she had. Given the quality and the weather - car booting wasn’t the answer – a pop up shop was. Anyone can do it. Simply book a venue and let people know, and bingo bongo you too can be a modern entrepreneur!!

Campaigners criticise North Norfolk man’s three hour wait for ambulance
Campaigners against the move to cut the ambulance service have criticised a heart attack patient's three-hour wait for an ambulance in Sheringham.
A 999 call was made for James Sadler, 65, on Sunday 28 October at 4.45pm when his wife suspected he was having a heart attack.
Although paramedics were quick on the scene, it was not until 7.45pm that the ambulance arrived at his home to rush him to hospital. The first ambulance that had been called to Mr Sadler’s home was diverted elsewhere, while a second was delayed because the driver had to fill the vehicle with petrol.
Denise Burke handing over results of the petition to the Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust Hayden Newton and chair Maria Ball.
The incident is yet another worrying story about ambulance response times in north Norfolk.
Denise Burke from the North Norfolk Labour Party, which set up the Act on Ambulances campaign, said “These horror stories about ambulance response times in north Norfolk only represent the bigger picture before the government cuts have hit. As demand continues to grow across the country we remain deeply worried about what will happen when we arrive in the busy winter months, which is when Norfolk loses approximately seven double-staffed ambulances.”
She added: “The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has pledged to review the cuts in north Norfolk on a monthly basis, and so we hope that patients like the family of Mr Sadler will continue to speak up about their experiences.”
The local Labour Party is continuing the petition against the cuts through the winter months. Residents can log on to www.actonambulances.co.uk or write to Act on Ambulances, 40 Hempstead Road, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6DF.

NHS Mandate has improving patient experience at its heart
The NHS Mandate published this month puts the patient’s experience at its heart, says North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb.
The document sets out the priorities for the health service over the next two years. It is agreed between the Government and the NHS Commissioning Board and has been drawn up following extensive consultation over the summer. It shows how the Government and Commissioning Board will be held accountable on a series of progress measures.
Key goals include: • Improving standards of care, especially for the elderly • Better diagnosis, treatment and care for people with dementia • Better care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period • Making it easier for patients to give feedback • Making it easier to access GP services – booking appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions, and accessing your own health records – online • Preventing premature deaths from the biggest killers • Putting mental health on an equal footing with physical health
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “The Mandate reaffirms the Government’s commitment to the founding principle of the NHS – a comprehensive and universal service, with care available to everyone according to clinical need rather than the ability to pay. It also sets out our priorities for the coming years. The patient’s experience is at the heart of the document – whether it’s giving people more control over their own care, making it easier for them to access GP services and information about their local NHS online, or to report concerns. I am particularly pleased to see the focus that is placed on mental health. This is something I fought hard for. Never before has any government prioritised mental health in this way. This issue affects so many of us and yet has never been treated as seriously as physical health. That has got to change.”

At the recent Eastern Region volunteering conference held in Essex our North Norfolk Group was very surprised, firstly, with one other Group, to be award-nominated under Diabetes UK’s new Inspire Awards for volunteering, and then to become the regional winner of the Voluntary Group Award. This is wonderful recognition of all the achievements by North Norfolk Group’s committee and members.
Kate Brown and John Simmons were present to receive the award as they had travelled there to present a cheque for £6,600 raised over the past year in support of Diabetes UK’s national work and campaigns, which included £1000 to support a specific diabetes research project being undertaken by Imperial College, London.
Beyond this however regional award winners are also entered for the national award, which is to be decided and presented at Westminster in December. A much now anticipated event.

National Trust launches search for Norfolk’s good talkers
The National Trust is looking for people from Norfolk to speak up on its behalf.
The charity is expanding its team of volunteer speakers to meet growing demand and wants to hear from anyone interested in spreading the word about the Trust’s work and ideology.
Speakers visit groups, organisations and societies to give fascinating and entertaining illustrated talks on a wide range of subjects, from heritage and history to wildlife and the outdoors.
Jennie Jordan, Talk Service regional manager, said: “We’ve revamped our popular Talk Service and would love to hear from anyone from Norfolk interested in joining the team to give talks on behalf of the National Trust. It helps to have experience of public speaking but if you like people and have enthusiasm for the Trust and its philosophy then we will support you and provide training.”
The National Trust was set up in 1895 with a mission to protect places of historic interest and natural beauty forever, for everyone. These
days it is one of the largest landowners in the country and cares for a wide variety of historic buildings, nature reserves and stretches of coastline.
The revamped Talk Service features new speakers, new topics and new digital technology, meaning the Trust can provide everything required, including projectors and sound systems.
Jennie added: “The Talk Service is a great way for people to learn all about the National Trust and our work, either out of curiosity, for fun or as preparation for visiting one the many beautiful places we care for.
“We now have a wide range of fascinating subjects on offer, from the history of the National Trust, our historic houses and different periods of history to talks about gardening, the coast and the countryside. There really is something for everyone.”
Popular subjects include how Humphry Repton created Sheringham Park, discovery of the Sutton Hoo treasure and the top secret military history of Orford Ness.
Talks usually last about 40 to 60 minutes and are fully illustrated. The service is free but, being a charity, the National Trust asks for a small donation – usually around £1 for each member of the audience – and for the speaker’s travel expenses to be paid.
For more information about the Talk Service or to make a booking please call 01284 747566 or email talkserviceenquiries@nationaltrust.org.uk

Plea for more family time from 1 in 5 kids Tel: 01263 837901
While watching television and DVDs tops the YouGov poll as the most common way for parents and children to spend time together in the UK 26% of children aged 8-11 years old and nearly half (49%) of all parents surveyed said they would like to spend more time together just going for a walk.
To help families get out on an Autumn walk, users of the website Mumsnet have provided some top tips on making sure that parents have got everything ready for a fun day out such as climbing a huge hill, flying a kite or hunting for some treasure on a beach.
Simon Pryor, Natural Environment Director at the National Trust, said: “Despite the fact that TV seems to be dominating family life its really encouraging that children and parents want to spend more time together and that walking is seen as a great way of doing just that. Walking is a brilliant way for families to spend time together, get fit and discover the joy of the British countryside. And with so many great activities taking place at National Trust properties around the country there’s no better time to get out and go on a walking adventure.”
Mumsnet co-founder and CEO Justine Roberts added: "It's all too easy to end up spending all family time in front of screens, watching TV or playing video games. Spending time with the
children outdoors can be just as cheap as well as fun and educational and offers a bit of balance in a world dominated by X-Factor and Fifa 12."
Dr William Bird, a GP and an expert in environment and health, said: "Children can benefit hugely from walking in the outdoors. High blood pressure, cholesterol and depression can be detected in children as young as 10, due to inactivity. Spending time with family, in the outdoors, can invigorate even the most TV or X-box-obsessed children!"
Families can also download free family friendly trails from www.nationaltrust.org. uk/greatbritishwalk and they can also share their favourite walks online for the chance to win a stay in a National Trust holiday cottage.
Other findings from the research include: Eighty one per cent of children aged 8 to 11 surveyed said they watched TV and DVDs with their parents in their free time, 69% go on activity trips and days out, while 66% go to the park together, 61 per cent said they went go to the cinema together, 50% playing sport and 52% on walks.
When asked the same question, parents of children 18 and under who spend their free
time together, answered slightly differently but TV still came out top, with 72%. According to parents, the second most common joint activity was going to the park (47%), followed by going on activity/day trips (46%) and going walking ranked fourth with 37%.
When asked which activities they’d like to do more with their children, 18 and under parents said day trips were the only activity that was more popular than walking, with 56% of parents saying they would like to go on more joint outings with their kids, compared to 49% that said they’d like to spend more time on walks with their children.
The 8 to 11 year olds surveyed said they’d like to spend more time with their parents doing outdoor activities such as going to the park (47%) and playing sport (46%).
Over half of the parents surveyed (54%) said they spend more time with their children than their own parents did. And one in three (35%) of parents said that they would like to spend more leisure time with their children.
Not surprisingly, the figures for teenagers (12-15 year olds) wanting to spend more time with their parents (13%) drop off though only 2% of 12-15 year olds want to spend less time with their parents.
North Norfolk loo blocks flushed with success!
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) new loo blocks in Happisburgh and Sheringham have both achieved Gold Awards in the 2012 Loo of the Year Awards. The Happisburgh toilets have also been shortlisted for a National Category Award for England and a Market Sector Award for Car Parks.
The two toilet blocks both built for NNDC by Thrower & Rutland of Felthorpe and designed by Stead Mutton & Griggs of Sheringham, were among 1432 entries from across the UK including Male, Female, Accessible, Changing Places and Family (baby change) loos, which required Loo of the Year inspectors to visit and judge over 5,000 individual toilets over the summer.

The inspection process covered 100 criteria including signage, décor and maintenance, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care. The 2012 Awards were sponsored by Lepicol, The Changing Places Consortium, Clos-o-Mat, The Toilet and Washroom Cleaning Company and are supported by the four national tourism bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “We’ve spent many a penny on building these two excellent toilet blocks and I would like to congratulate everyone who made such excellent work possible.”

Winter walkers to enjoy ‘green’ lighting on Sheringham’s East Promenade
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) contractors began installing ‘green’ lighting columns on Sheringham East Promenade this month, providing sustainable illumination for those enjoying their seaside walks along the ‘prom’ on darker winter days.
Twelve solar and wind powered lighting columns will be installed along the town’s East Promenade, following a trial of the system in 2010/11. As a result of the pilot scheme improvements have been made to the sustainable technology, to ensure that it works effectively, particularly in the harsh winter conditions experienced on the north Norfolk coast.
A former scheme, using traditional mains powered electric lights, was originally considered as part of the Sheringham regeneration project in the early part of this century, but it had to be dropped owing to the prohibitive cost and significant disruption of having to replace failed underground electricity cabling along the length of the Prom. Subsequent discussions between NNDC, Sheringham Town Council and Sheringham
Regeneration, along with a public consultation, concluded that there was general agreement that lighting was desired and that an innovative low-cost and sustainable alternative might be possible and affordable. This led to the ‘green’ pilot scheme in 2010.
The work, which started on 12 November and should be completed by the end of the month, was deliberately planned for the late autumn so as to be outside the main visitor season but before the onset of the harshest winter weather, and so in time to illuminate the East Promenade for winter walkers.
Following a formal tender process the work, which will cost nearly £53,000 and is being funded by NNDC with contributions from Sheringham Town Council and Sheringham Regeneration, will be undertaken by specialist firm Marlec Engineering Co. Ltd. of Corby.
“Sheringham is an all-year-round resort and I am delighted that by working together we have been able to reinstate lighting on the East Promenade. I am even more pleased that it will be innovative, effective, efficient and lowenergy, reinforcing North Norfolk’s growing reputation as a champion for a sustainable environment.”
Sheringham Mayor, Doug Smith, said, "Sheringham Town Council is proud to be a funding partner in this exciting project. Sheringham will be one of the first towns in Britain to showcase this innovative, environment-friendly lighting on a seaside promenade. Once again Sheringham leads the way with a superb all-year-round facility for residents and visitors alike."
NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said,

Council announces free pre-Christmas parking for Sunday shoppers North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that to encourage shoppers to spend their cash in north Norfolk over the festive period it is introducing three hours free parking in all of its car parks in the district on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas (2, 9, 16 and 23 December).
The announcement, which is in response to a suggestion from Holt Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is being introduced as a way of boosting trade on Sundays during the peak pre-Christmas shopping period.
Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Business Enterprise and Economic Development said “The District Council was approached by Holt Chamber of Trade and Commerce,

which is urging all local shops to follow the lead of Holt's largest business by opening for business on the four Sundays preceding Christmas Day. The Council was asked to help boost the initiative by providing free parking in the town. I am pleased that the Council will provide three hours free parking, not just in Holt, but at all Council owned car parks across the whole of North Norfolk to allow traders across the whole district to benefit from this initiative and we encourage them to grasp this chance to boost their trade. We hope that residents in North Norfolk will be encouraged to take the opportunity to shop locally rather than go further afield and look forward to welcoming visitors from other areas on those days to our many excellent shops and eating places.”

Question & Answer Surgery
Readers might be interested to hear that on 27 November Norfolk County Council will be holding a “question & answer surgery” on day care charging at the Age UK North Norfolk Daycentre, Good Companions Hall, 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham, NR26 8DZ between 10.00am and 12noon.
It will be an ideal opportunity for anyone who has a relative or are themselves receiving day care via Social Services to address any issues they may have about their charges. They will also have an opportunity to talk to someone face to face in private about their own particular circumstances if they feel that their financial assessment is incorrect and perhaps they are paying too much.
This is something that is affecting more and more people in our area now and I think it is an ideal way to talk to the people who are directly responsible for the day to day running of day care charging.
The “surgery” is open to all and refreshments will be available for anyone who wishes to come along.
It will also give an opportunity to those who are thinking of attending our Day Centre to come and visit us and see what services we can offer.

A Wet Winter’s Day
What a morning – after a couple of bright sunny days, Saturday 10 November was wet!
Having had to postpone the September meeting because of work commitments I was thinking of cancelling this last meeting of the year by the Sheringham LokeRiverCare Group. Just as I was about to leave, however, Margaret, a stalwart of the group turned up so as we were there we headed for the becks to start the winter stream –clean.
Again we were soon collecting the usual plastic bags, discarded cans and wine bottles from the banks and stream beds. I suppose if you cannot drink responsibly there is little hope you can dispose of the bottles and cans responsibly either!
In addition, a plastic chair and some old paint tins were recovered – the latter being particularly worrying as the contents could pollute the streams, although on this occasion no evidence of this was noted. By the time we had completed our rounds of the Loke, Back Common and Top Common the rain had stopped. If you are interested in joining the Group our next meeting will be around March 2013. Please look out for the posters nearer the time.

Liberal Democrats delivering radical reform to shared parental leave and flexible working families and careers. It should, ultimately, also mothers and – Lamb be good for business. We need to get the best fathers will be
Norman Lamb has welcomed the Government’s announcement of radical reforms to parental leave, allowing both parents to share up to a year’s leave to look after their new-born children. The North Norfolk MP was closely involved in shaping the proposals during his time as a Minister at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
The changes will deliver a long held Liberal Democrat commitment to make parental leave more flexible, allowing fathers to play a greater role in raising their child, helping mothers to return to work at a time that’s right for them and creating more flexible workplaces to boost the economy.
New proposals are also announced today to extend the right to request flexible working to all employees, to give greater choice and freedom to workers and businesses.
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “Shared parental leave is about fairness for women in the workplace and equality for men and women as they plan their
out of both men and women in the workforce, and these changes should help allow that to happen. These plans will give real flexibility to families to work out an arrangement for caring for a new born baby which suits both employer and employee. The changes will help employers to attract and retain women in their organisations and prevent women dropping out of the workforce once they start a family. Liberal Democrats have long supported more flexible working and parental leave and I’m incredibly proud that the Coalition Government has delivered these revolutionary reforms.”
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, said “Liberal Democrats believe that our current system of maternity leave is out-of-date and out-of-step with the wishes of modern parents who want much greater flexibility in how they look after their children. Reform is long overdue and the changes we are making will shatter the perception that women have to be the primary care-givers. In the future, both
