And yet the need is so great that a child who receives a shoebox this year is unlikely ever to get another. The charity which began with one person continues to be about individuals. Each person who fills a shoebox is making a difference.

Pictured is Harry with one of the many boxes piled up and ready to go to Samaritans Purse.

BUSY YEAR
2012 has been an especially busy year for local man Andrew Parish, as Clutterbugs, the oven cleaning and specialist cleaning services business which he set up in 2005, has continued to prove very popular with customers throughout North Norfolk!
The Cookers by Clutterbugs service is available for for any type of cooker and includes cooker hood cleaning and oven light replacement where required. Sunday market to boost Sheringham’s pre-Christmas trade
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is to extend the popular Sheringham Saturday Market to cover Sundays as well, over the four pre-Christmas weekends in December.
The new Sunday Market, which will see stall-holders in business on Sheringham’s Station Approach car park 9.30am – 2.30pm (weather permitting) on Sundays 2,9,16 and 23 December as well as on Saturdays as usual, is being introduced alongside the Council’s initiative of offering three hours free parking in its car parks on the same four Sundays.
This move is seen as a further fillip to local trade, encouraging people to shop in their excellent north Norfolk market towns and boosting business in the build-up to Christmas.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “The council is determined to do all it can to support local business. By not only offering free parking on the four Sundays before Christmas to encourage local people to shop locally, but also supporting a special Sunday Market on the same days, we anticipate that Sheringham will have a really exciting pre-Christmas buzz this year!”

Kids go free at Cromer Pier’s Festive Fun Family Show
Cromer’s Christmas Seaside Special is now in its 8th year and has become something of a festive tradition for the whole family – and this year in a commitment to try and introduce a younger audience to live variety, families can bring children along free of charge
A memorable mix of fun, laughter, spectacle, song and dance, it is a truly dazzling spectacle that promises to fill you with sparkle and festive cheer.
This year’s show continues the feel good factor of the past year with inspiration taken from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and the wonderful London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. What better way to round off a fantastic year of celebrations than with a fabulous seasonal trip to the theatre!
Popular home grown comedian Olly Day is back for his 4th successive show and will be joined on stage by comedienne Jo Little – a great comedy pairing sure to have their audience rolling around the aisles with laughter! Also returning is the lovely Lulu Alexander whose delightful voice was a real treat last year. Lulu is joined by male vocalist Eddie Bushell who has lived in Cromer for most of his life and been involved in music and singing from an early age – this will be Eddie’s 4th performance on Cromer’s historic pier.

Of course no Christmas Seaside Special would be complete without the sensational Seaside Special Dancers who always delight and dazzle their audiences with their energetic routines and amazing costumes designed by Cromer’s very own Laura Whyte.
Joining Laura on the creative team once again this year are Director and Choreographer Di Cooke, Musical Arranger Nigel Hogg, Scenic Artist/Set Designer Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations and Amanda Hill of Pink Panda Company.
Audiences will delight in big production numbers featuring ever popular Christmas songs including Happy Holiday, Walking in a Winter Wonderland and It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas as well as a beautiful quartet, a choir and children from Cromer’s very own Marlene’s School of Dancing.
Music will take them on a journey through a traditional Dickensian street into modern day London with a skyline that includes The London Eye, The Shard, The Gherkin and Big
Ben as well as an amazing modern musical medley and a fun and cheery finale that is sure to send everybody happy.
Christmas Seaside Special 2012 runs from 1st to 30th December with afternoon and evening performances almost every day. It promises all the magic of Christmas with more laughter, more laughter, more sparkle and more high energy dance routines than ever before. Discounts are available for group bookings, Tides Bistro is available to book a pre-Show supper and, with children going free (limited to two children aged 16 & under per full paying adult) what better way is there to celebrate the festive season?

Joyeux Noel
A varied programme which includes a first half of English madrigals and lute songs by John Dowland plus Stanford's “The Blue Bird” and a choral arrangement of “Autumn Leaves”. The second half has a French flavour and includes “O Holy Night” by Adam Adolpe, Christmas motets by Victoria and Sweelinck, “Gabriel's Message” and French carols as well as carols for audience participation.
Programme:
6.30pm - Saturday 15 December St Andrews Church, Holt There will be a retiring collection and all proceeds will go equally to the St Andrews building project and FALCON Children’s Festival
This is the second of a proposed series of concerts set up to provide a regular way of raising much needed funds for St Andrews Church and F.A.L.C.O.N. The intention is to build, both a showcase for local talented musicians, and a performance opportunity for pupils from the Purcell School, giving audiences and performers alike a rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
F.A.L.C.O.N will now be an annual child-centred festival, providing opportunities for children to engage with and experience the creative arts, alongside a programme of occasional events with F.A.L.C.O.N ‘flying-out’ to schools and other venues. In building towards the festival we aspire to in the future, we are inevitably looking for practical and material support, and would be enormously grateful for any help and support
you felt able to give. A generous donation to the retiring collection, would be an enormous help to both groups and very gratefully received.
F.A.L.C.O.N would like to thank Father Howard and Susan Wharfe of St Andrews Church for working with us to make this series of concerts possible.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
On 17 November we held our Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham and I am happy to report that £1623.32 was raised for the cats in our care. Despite the rain, the sale was very well attended and a steady stream of customers passed through the doors. We always enjoy this event as so many friends and fellow cat lovers come and support us and those who have had cats from us update us with news of their beloved companions. Cats like Vikki, re-homed by us in 2004, had always lived outside until she came into care but now never attempts to set a foot outdoors, even when she goes round the country with her family in their caravan. Vikki sends us postcards from the many places she visits and is a much travelled cat. Also, looking at photographs of two kittens which left for a new home in the summer with two of our new volunteers, Rachel and Ant, and seeing how much they have grown; or talking to the couple who asked for our help, having bought a holiday cottage and discovering they had a feral colony living close by, which was rapidly increasing in size and using their garden as a toilet. They trapped all the cats, took the adults to be neutered and brought the kittens to us to be rehomed. So many stories we could tell and so many cats we have helped over the years.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Nimrod - looking at him now it is hard to believe he was underweight and poorly when he arrived in care
A Bit of Christmas Magic
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club were delighted when Santa took time out from his busy schedule to drop into the Christmas Show last month. The annual event raised over £600 in aid of local charity PACT Animal Sanctuary.
During these difficult economic times the Sanctuary is seeing donations fall while the number of animals needing urgent help is increasing, so were over the moon at the generosity shown by club members.
Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training. For further information on the club and classes available please call 01263 720730 or visit our web site

Christmas is coming…………..
The tinsel is out, the tree is up and fairy lights are a plenty! In the canine and feline world however, Christmas is not such a fun time. There is sometimes a lot of disruption to everyday life with more people in the house, some of them not very well known. The cat’s usual sleeping place on the spare bed is suddenly unavailable and there is a great big tree in the front room! So, sometimes our pets get upset at Christmas and when you really stop to think, it’s no surprise why. With so much sudden change, a dog or cat with an already nervous disposition may well be tipped over the edge and start protesting with strange and somewhat unwelcome behaviours. Cats may start to urinate or ‘scent mark’ in the house, they may become more vocal and start picking fights with their housemates – of any species. Dogs tend to get vocal and disruptive; the tree may be used as a lavatory, after all that’s what trees are for outside – silly humans for bringing them inside! There are things you can do to relive the stress on your pets but most of all you need to consider them in your plans. Try to keep their routine as close to ‘normal’ as possible. Provide an alternative bed if the spare room is unavailable, maybe a crate with a blanket draped over. The cat may insist on sleeping on top of the wardrobe for the duration of the festivities, let them, as this is where they feel comfortable with everything that is going on.

Some other tips for Christmas with animals Don’t buy a pet as a present – so many end up as unwanted gifts and in rescue homes by New Year. Don’t feed your dog chocolate – it is toxic to dogs – they can become extremely unwell and some quantities of dark chocolate can be fatal. Provide a den or use a plug-in calming device (available from the surgery) to ease the nerves of stressed animals when everyone arrives for Christmas. Keep routines as normal as possible If you are worried about your pet’s behaviour during Christmas or at any other time during the year do get in touch with the nurses at Sheringham for some sound advice.
We would like to wish all of our clients a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year

Gary Parrett’s (The Grove) Recipe 2 Loin of Gunton venison with toast pine nut and red onion mash, braised red cabbage and rich cacao sauce
This is a fairly challenging dish with plenty of preparation, but it’s well worth the effort.
Gunton venison is probably the best around at the moment, and with summer well and truly behind us it’s the perfect meal for those dark winter evenings.
The Grove maitre d’, Gary Taylor, has discovered a cracking Chilean red, the Emiliana Pinot Noir Reservea - full bodied, hearty, smooth and intelligent, a real autumnal wine - which compliments the Gunton venison perfectly.
Ingredients (for two meals):
200g of Gunton Venison loin from Icarus Hines in Cromer. I get Icarus to take the skin off and leave a little fat left on (trimmed) For the mash, 10g toasted pine nuts, Half a red onion (sliced) Two potatoes salt - pinch, pepper - pinch 80ml double cream 25g salted butter
Method:
1. Boil some water and add your peeled diced potatoes.
2. While they are cooking toast the pine nuts and caramelize the red onions in a little butter
and sugar. Mix the nuts and the onion together and turn your attention to the mashed potato.
3. Once the potatoes are soft (don’t over-boil) drain them in a colander for at least ten minutes – you’ll want to get all moisture out of them.
4. Return the empty potato pan to the stove and add the drained potatoes. Have the pan on a low heat, so not to burn them, and when all the steam has stopped evaporating add the pine nut mix, butter, double cream and salt and pepper, and mash. Expelling moisture is the perfect way to prevent the potatoes releasing gluten, giving you nice fluffy mash instead of it being gloopy and stodgy.
Ingredients - Braised red cabbage:
200g cabbage (finely sliced), 10ml white wine vinegar 80g demerara sugar Half a bottle of red wine, (I steal some Chilean from Gary for its fruit and spice…) 8g toasted fennel seeds salt and pepper 2stp olive oil (any) 50g diced onion 5 sprigs of thyme (stripped)

Method:
1. Heat a saucepan with the olive oil until slightly smoking, add the onion and cabbage and continue to sweat on a medium heat until the cabbage has a shiny glaze.
2. Add the thyme leaves and fennel seeds and stir.
3. Once this is done add the white wine vinegar and the sugar, and stir in the half bottle of red wine.
4. Slowly cook until the cabbage is very soft and the sugar has given it a nice glaze, season to your liking and set aside.
Ingredients Chocolate sauce
1 beef knuckle bone 1 chicken carcass (both obtained from your local butcher, they may even give them to you for free if you ask nicely…!) 2 sprigs of rosemary
1 stick of celery (chopped) 1 white onion (diced) 1 red pepper (diced) 1 leek (washed and chopped) 2 carrots (chopped) 5 cloves of garlic (chopped with skin on) 500 ml of red wine - Bordeaux if possible 500ml of beef/veal stock, 5-8 g of dark bitter chocolate – minimum 70% but 100% if possible
Method:
1. Put your beef knuckle bones and chicken carcass in a tray and roast the bones to release the bone marrow. The gelatinous content of the marrow will thicken your sauce, so there’s no need for flour or any other thickening agent, making this dish completely gluten free. Don’t burn your bones as it will mar the taste of the finished sauce.
2. Heat a saucepan - add a little olive oil and add your diced and chopped vegetables. The trick here is to burn the vegetables to the bottom of the pan and then add half of the red wine to de-glaze them. This gives the sauce its colour and its richness. Turn the heat down and check on your bones.
3. When the bones have been roasted well and the marrow is out of the knuckle, add them both to the vegetables. You will notice that some of the marrow and bits of the chicken have been left stuck to the tray. These are the really flavoursome bits, so to remove them heat the tray on the stove and add a little of the red wine, then scrape with the back of a wooden spoon. This will lift the pieces and all the flavour that was stuck to the tray. Add this to the sauce pan.
4. Add your 500ml of beef stock to the pan and boil until the liquid has reduced to half.
5. You now need to strain the liquid into a separate pan, discarding the the bones and vegetables in the process. When you’ve done this put the remaining liquid back on the stove on a medium to high heat and continue reducing the stock until it has thickened slightly - keep a wary eye on this as your sauce will thicken very quickly!
6. Once done remove from the stove, add the bitter chocolate, and whisk.
This sauce gives the whole dish gives a unique twist, the pairing of the bitter chocolate sauce with the sweetness of the onion mash and the earthiness of the venison marries very nicely indeed. Although it’s a lengthy process, the rewards are well reaped and you will be the talk of the dinner table for weeks to come. Season the steak and cook to your liking; my preference for loin is medium rare.
When serving you will only need a little of the chocolate sauce because of the intensity of it - do not use this sauce as gravy; the whole dish should not be covered in sauce.
I serve this dish with fried parsnip crisps to garnish, the crunch of the parsnip adds a lovely texture to the plate.
Good luck!

R.I.P. Oddball Cedric
Oddball Cedric, aptly named by the ladies of Shannock Court as they knitted him out of odd balls of wool, was entered into the Sheringham carnival and WON!
But what do you do with a redundant 25 foot sea serpent afterwards. He was too large to House and cost too much to feed so they decided he needed to be reincarnated into something useful.
Overstrand church minister Sharon Willimott was fund-raising for their church disabled toilet and to extend their kitchen so they thought they could help out by turning Oddball into Christmas tree decorations. So after three days of unpicking Oddball, the ladies used his very nice crocheted parts to turn into a blanket and cushion and his oddments to make the lovely mice, stockings and crackers to hang on the church Christmas tree.
It is hoped that people will then buy the decorations and fund the new works for the church.
Well done to everyone at Shannock Court for working so hard.

Bootiful! By Miranda Marshall Partner at Hayes + Storr
If a decade or so ago, you’d asked your average visitor to Norfolk to name a famous Norfolk person, the chances are they would have chosen either Horatio Nelson or Bernard Matthews.
Bernard has recently posthumously regained media attention, by leaving his English and French estates in such a way that led to some big legal battles between his adopted children and his mistress. Limited space requires me to simplify the facts.
The dispute arose over Bernard leaving his French villa (with a value of Euro 15,000,000) to Odile, his mistress of 20 years. French succession law imposes ‘forced heirship’, (i.e. you are restricted as to whom you can leave your assets). The French rules required Bernard to give 75% of his French assets to his children and he was only free to leave Odile
25%. Three of his four children insisted on exercising their rights, and on that basis, Odile could only have a 44% share of the villa. Those children (who had received substantial assets from their father during his lifetime) also brought a claim that the English estate should discharge their liability for French inheritance tax on the villa. It is worth mentioning as part of the wider picture that the son who agreed that Odile could take his share of the French villa had received his father’s residuary estate worth £40,000,000.
There was abundant evidence that Bernard knew that he was required under French forced- heirship rules to benefit his children by his French estate; but, there was also good evidence that he did not intend that his English estate should bear the tax on his French estate. The French succession rules were applied to the villa and the children received their enforced share; however, under English law the children had to pay the tax on their French inheritance from their own resources as they were unsuccessful in disputing the English Will. It was quite clear that Bernard had never wanted his children to benefit further from his

Country Markets - One of Norfolk’s Best Kept Secrets Take some of the hassle out of shopping and cooking for the festive season by making one of Norfolk's 12 Country Market cooperatives your starting point. With this being the International Year of the Cooperative there is no better time to come and take a look and perhaps think about selling some of your produce too.
Often not known outside their immediate areas, Country Markets offer a great range of home baked goods and preserves, containing none of the preservatives or flavour-enhancers so loved by mass-production factories, and there are often tasty samples for you to try. The great selection of food is sold alongside home grown vegetables and plants, which have often been in the ground up to the day before the Market, while crafts have been lovingly made by experienced people who have more interest in producing something exclusive, rather than another thousand of the same boring t-shirt! What's more, shopping at a Country Market means you are supporting the local economy and in terms of the environment, cutting right down on food miles.
and controlled by the members they serve. The nationwide Country Markets organisation, which embraces Norfolk's 12 markets, can trace its roots back to 1919 when the government of the day sponsored the setting up of co-operative markets to sell surplus produce. There are now over 350, each belonging to one of 65 Country Market Societies, responsible for ensuring the proper running of the local Markets. These Societies offer not only the opportunity to sell homemade produce but also present the wide variety of people that join them a personal social network. Anyone wanting to join their local Country Market as a producer selling home baking, garden produce or craft items should contact Norfolk Country Markets but if there isn't a Market near you, there's also the opportunity to start Cooperatives are business enterprises owned your own. Moo-sic to the Ears
From Molly Coddle the milkmaid to Jack, Jill and even a full-size panto cow; the cast of this year’s seasonal Sheringham show have arrived in town.
And Rachel added: “Jack and the Beanstalk is going to be so much fun. I can’t wait for all the singing and dancing. I know the kids will love it.”
Causing something of a commotion in their colourful costumes, the actors caught the eye of passers by as they ventured out on to the High Street.
Delightful dame Russel Hicken said he was thrilled to be back in Sheringham to flutter his eyelashes for yet another Christmas season. “This is my third year running so Sheringham feels like a home from home to me now,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started on the show itself, especially as Kate Withers, our costume designer, has created such a beautiful array of outfits for me.”
Opening on Wednesday, December 5, and running until Saturday, January 5, Jack and the Beanstalk promises high jinx and festive fun for all ages.
Written by West End star Killian Donnelly, one of the male leads in Phantom of the Opera, it will offer a stunning selection box of singing, dancing and jolly panto japes, according to theatre director Debbie Thompson.
Joining them on stage will be Cornelius Garret, playing Jack’s father. Cornelius is also returning to the venue, having played the role of the evil Abanazar back in 2010.
Hilarious double act James Lavender and Benedict Martin will be taking on the roles of Ralph and Snotmill.
“This is the most ambitious pantomime the Sheringham Little Theatre has ever attempted,” she said. “It is a huge step but we are really looking forward to it.”
Among the actors joining vivacious Russel on stage will be Jonathan Broderick, as Jack, and Rachel Waring, as Jill.
Jonathan said: “I have never visited Sheringham before but it is such a lovely place – it is almost as if it has been made for Christmas.”
Signal Box Move
Sheringham East signal box has returned to its original site overlooking the level crossing. It had previously stood on Platform 2 at Sheringham Station.
This year’s spectacular set will be designed once again by Matt Nunn, with Ron and Charlotte Sayer returning to oversee the music.
“This pantomime really will be something special and so we are relishing the prospect of being able to produce something truly magical this year,” Debbie added.
*Jack and the Beanstalk runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 5 to Saturday, January 5.

This is another major step in returning the whole station to its historic appearance.
The box is 106 years old, and the new position is pretty much where it would have been in 1906. For the past 40 years it has stood on platform 2. When built, the box would have controlled the level crossing gates across Station Road as well as the signals to the east of the station. The move is part of the long-term plan to restore the station site by re-instating the buildings on Platform 2 as they were before Dr Beeching shut the through line in the early 1960s.

the foliage. Always ask the shop to wrap it in paper right around the top of the foliage, or put it in a plastic bag so that it is completely protected.
Poinsettias have become synonymous with Christmas and millions of them will be given as gifts in the next few weeks. The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson ‘blossoms’ sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolise the Star of Bethlehem, and the red bracts represent the blood sacrificed at the crucifixion.
Sometimes a poinsettia will start wilting once you get it home, and continue to deteriorate, no matter what you do. This could be due to the plant having been stored in cold conditions in the shop before you bought it. Buying plants from a reputable supplier is therefore recommended.
Water poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the water has begun to dry out. The life of the plants is extended by humidity, so mist regularly. Feed monthly with a low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser. They can suffer from grey mould if overwatered and may also be attacked by common pests of indoor plants such as scale insect and mealybug.
Poinsettias are often disposed of once they start to fade as they are disappointing in their
They are cheery plants with their brightly coloured bracts, usually red, but new varieties are available including ‘Silver Star’ which has dusky pink bracts and variegated leaves, ‘Lemon Snow’ with pale yellow bracts and ‘Cortez Burgundy’ with deep plum bracts. If you are buying a plant be careful when transporting it from the shop to your home, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage

second year, but it is possible to get a good display in the subsequent years and the Royal Horticultural Society gives the following advice: ■ Prune back the plants hard in April, to about 10cm (4in) ■ Re-pot them, growing them in a light, cool place over summer. A temperature of 15-18 degrees C (60-65 degrees F) is ideal ■ Repot using three parts John Innes No 3 to one part grit
Poinsettias can be propagated by softwood cuttings in May but make sure that you wear gloves as the sap can be an irritant. In the United States there is a common misconception that the poinsettia is highly toxic. This idea was spread by a 1919 urban legend of a two-year-old child dying after consuming a leaf but its toxicity is relatively mild.
Some idea of the size of the poinsettia trade can be seen from the activities of one nursery in Kent. In March their poinsettia cuttings are taken from mother plants in Ethiopia which are then flown to a specialist nursery in Germany to be rooted and they then arrive in Kent at the end of June to be grown on for Christmas.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
Having had a very successful and enjoyable in-house evening in October, we settled down to an extremely original and informative demonstration by Dulcie Lofting for our November meeting. Dulcie’s first tips illustrated how best to use the shape of your container and oasis (she used white chamfered oasis) to blend with the design of the arrangement, and how to check out the gardens of good friends for different foliage!
Using freely available sticks and materials from her garden, and a variety of beautiful flowers, many from the supermarket, she created six very stunning and outstandingly simple designs, all beautifully enhanced by her choice of containers and supports. We were treated to lime green carnations, purple gladioli (take out the tops to stop them folding over), white lillies, nerines (don’t forget to leave the bulbs on top of the soil when planting), beautiful copper coloured canna lilies (very supple if stood in shallow water around the edge of a bucket so that air circulates, then warm stems with hands before use). Our lucky raffle winners took these wonderful prizes home.

REPLY TO GRUMPY OLD MAN FROM GRUMPY remaining faithful Home affairs Committee, Our manager has OLD COUNCILLOR toSheringham this town and now trying to put been to an International conference all telling
Thank you for your thoughtless, ill-informed and destructive comments from Grumpy Old Man in issue 355.
Although your comment could be labelled at some councillors in my experience it would be of a very few, as I have found most councillors conscientious and dedicated to their communities.
You would of course not know but many like me put as much as 40 plus hours a week into council work and also remain available at weekends to answer the electorates questions. And of course unlike you are prepared to put our heads above the parapet and be visible and open to the public.
I could part agree with your comment regarding political parties, for me standing as a Liberal Democrat, having a very good MP in Norman Lamb has given me a platform with support to promote local issues, we are not whipped unlike other parties who are expected to tow the party line, this gives me more independence to use my own discretion, and bring a bit of common sense into the frame. For me as you say, a LONG SERVIVING COUNCILLOR ENJOYING A PART TIME SECOND CAREER, often asking myself is it really worthwhile, especially after reading and hearing comments like your own.
Being a local man, raising my family in
something back.
I am satisfied in quite a few things I have been involved and achieved by my own persistence. It’s quite ironic that on page 24 backing on to your piece also stating, ‘SERVING OUR BEST INTERESTS’ is the work I have been championing for the last 8 years, taking the concept of Restorative Approaches from a low level issue used by a few individuals to a county wide project being used by Schools, Police, Children’s Residential homes, Probation Service etc, etc.
I also hold myself as most other councillors open to the scrutiny of the public by declaring all necessary interests and all allowances I receive. DO YOU????
All expences etc are online for all to see. My philosophy is if you can’t say something good about someone don’t say anything.
Brian John Hannah Should you have read that piece I hope you Liberal Democrat Member of Norfolk County would recognise the benefit this is having with Council. Sheringham Division and North our youngsters and with the community. Norfolk District Council Restorative Approaches are now firmly embedded in the County Council structure, this I have also as a member promoted single handed. Rotary Clubs throughout East Anglia are taking part in a relay event to I also happen to be raise money for the charity ‘Wheel Power’, each Club having pledged to very pleased with the raise at least £250 during their leg. The ‘Wheel Appeal’, as it is called, way my staff have aims to raise £6 million nationally to provide over 2000 disabled people embraced this with a new sports wheelchair, training and coaching which will enable subject and them to participate and enjoy competitive and recreational support. promoted it over Locally, the relay - which involves handing over a book signed by Norfolk, myself with each Rotary President - reached Cromer last month and Rotarians staff have spoken to from Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club took the book by sea to the parliamentary Sheringham where it was handed over to members of the North Norfolk Rotary Club.

Very many of us, myself included, regard the so-called festive season with dread.
The celebration of the birth of Christ is now trampled under a three month saga of rampant commercialisation which we cannot escape. It is no longer possible to look forward to Christmas with feelings of goodwill and pleasurable anticipation. Instead we are harried, coerced and cajoled by weeks of relentless and steadily rising pressure into a state of collective anxiety causing us to rush about like lemmings trying to conform by buying goods and gifts and stocking up with enough indulgent food to stand a siege, as though the shops were due to close for a month. But they only shut for one day.
This horrid state of affairs has come about through exploitative commercial pressure and has reached a pitch where some sort of control is needed but nobody dare apply it.
I used to love Christmas and the warm and happy feeling it engendered during the run up to it during December. Nowadays, by the time December arrives I am fed up with hearing about it and paste on a smile in order to conform with the imperative to be jolly so as to keep out of trouble. How wonderful it would be to get back to the situation in my youth when Christmas Day and Boxing Day were the only days off work and January was
the only month for sales. Back to the time when the year had some real shape. Now if you fall ill over the Christmas and New Year extended holiday period you discover that your doctors have shut up their surgeries whilst the supermarkets never close.
Going to the local church at midnight on Christmas Eve was to understand what the wonder of it, the Faith, the Belief, was all about. It felt good. I haven’t been for years as the sincerity has been knocked out of it. It is now Xmas – the X standing for Xcess and life is like the DFS sale, perpetual and deceptive, where nobody wants to pay the full price for anything, including transgressions in a world of discontent.
Self indulgence has cost us a great deal. Is it not ironic when in these politically correct times a Christian street preacher is arrested for allegedly causing offence to non Christians by publicly proclaiming his views, yet not a word of protest is heard from the authorities when the entire country is force-fed an over-prolonged Christian festival? The answer is money, which is esteemed way above principle. Must we put up with this joyless state of affairs?

PS Thanks for responding to my diatribe about computers to Jan Horrox and fellow Grumpy Terry Dacktill (nice one!). I am pleased that Jan is so competent with the keyboard, but I have to say I am no luddite as I appreciate technology brings so many benefits - it is just that I would rather somebody else deal with it, it is not my forte. Practical and artistic work are meat and drink to me, I can paper a ceiling even at my age but I bet Jan has to call in a professional. Each to his own, they say!

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club have had a busy but enjoyable time over the past few months. Apart from the usual business meetings on the second Tuesday of each month they have had an enjoyable social side.
One evening in September some of the members had a guided tour of the historical parts of Great Yarmouth and heard many interesting facts as well as gruesome tales of the past. The tour was followed by a hot supper.
Also in September they visited the home and workshops of Wing Commander Ken Wallis who invented the Autogyro and flew “Little Nellie” in the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice”.
In October they organised a very successful “Quiz & Chips” at The Morley Club and are planning to hold another in the New Year.
On 27 November the Lions held a Charity Darts Competition in aid of Nelson’s Journey (a charity for bereaved children) and other Lions charities.

DVLA deal ‘good news for Norfolk Post Offices and motorists’
Former Postal Affairs Minister and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has described the deal that will see the Post Office continue to deliver tax disc and driving licence services as ‘good news for Norfolk Post Offices and motorists’. Motorists will be able to tax their cars and apply for or renew driving licences at the Post Office for at least seven more years in a deal with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) announced yesterday by the Coalition Government.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “I’ve had many letters from constituents who were worried that their Post Office was in danger of losing this vital service, so I am extremely pleased that the Post Office bid has been successful. Post Offices are a vital part of our communities here in Norfolk and this news, along with the Coalition’s commitment to invest £1bn in the Post Office network, helps to put them on a more sustainable footing for the future. This news also furthers the Coalition’s aim to see Post Offices as a front office for Government and I am pleased that this contract means that the Post Offices will be able to bid for other services in the future.” Miss Terry 0' Neill Is seeking a new premises licence for The Funky Mackerel Cafe Beach Road East Promenade Sheringham NR26 8BH For provision of regulated entertainment and sale of alcohol (As part of dining experience 24/7 but will not be open 24/7)

Give the most Superfast broadband priceless gift is on its way to Norfolk you can this – Lamb Christmas Norman Lamb has welcomed the news that the Coalition Government’s
People across our area are being urged to show some festive spirit by giving blood this December. As the Christmas holidays approach and people find themselves busy preparing for the festive break, it’s easy to forget that appointment in the diary to donate blood.
As a result, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think of hospital patients who need blood transfusions during the festive period just as much as at any other time of the year.
While many people will soon be taking time out to celebrate with friends and family, others will spend December receiving cancer treatment or undergoing life-saving surgery and emergency care, so NHSBT is calling on people in Cromer to make a date to donate now.
This winter also sees NHSBT aiming to recruit 100,000 new donors in 100 days to protect future blood stocks. Every year new donors are needed to replace existing donors who drop out of the system but this year, the need is more urgent after a dramatic decline in the number of younger donors signing up.
plans to bring superfast broadband to Norfolk have been approved by the European Commission.
This approval paves the way for the Coalition Government’s £530m rural broadband scheme. Work on laying cables can now start in earnest for local authority broadband projects all around the UK, including Norfolk.
The Coalition announced last year that Norfolk would get £15million to provide superfast broadband across the area.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “Superfast broadband is crucial to build a strong economy, where everyone has the opportunity to make a success of their business. This will create jobs and growth for us in Norfolk and ensure we can compete fairly with the big cities. It is also very important for local and national government to deliver public services effectively online and increasingly people want broadband to go about our everyday lives. For too long, our area has missed out on investment in broadband. That’s why I’m glad that the European Commission has approved the Government’s plans.”
NHSBT lead donor relations manager Derek Carr said: “While we appreciate people are often very busy shopping for presents and planning get-togethers at this time of the year, donated blood is needed just as much as ever in December.
“As a result, we are appealing for people here in Cromer to show warm hearts by taking just a little time out to give blood this Christmas. We are particularly keen for younger people and those who haven’t given blood before to get in touch so that they can become the lifesavers of the future.”
Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

surface. A gentle vacuum sucks your skin while the diamonds gently abrade and polish it. This is followed by a complete oxygen and vitamin facial. Skin resurfacing can reduce the effects of aging on our skin. Skin resurfacing is a treatment that improves wrinkles, skin texture and colour by removing the topmost layer of skin leaving it more supple and vibrant. Skin resurfacing also stimulates the elastic tissue beneath the surface of the skin resulting in a healthier and firmer appearance. A wonderful alternative or compliment to chemical peels or laser treatments, the diamond microdermabrasion treatment is non-invasive, pain-free and requires no down time after treatment. Diamond microdermabrasion is suitable for most people.

Great Music - But He Can’t Read a Note!
You would think that a two hour show featuring the amazing sounds of the latest Yamaha keyboards would need a top player who could read music - but the latest music star to visit the Briston Organ Shows just doesn't read music! However, you wouldn't know, because he has an
amazing ear for melodies and harmonies, and he thrilled a really packed Copeman Centre with such gems as 'Take the 'A' Train' (with an amazing piano solo!), some haunting Pan Pipe Myers Financial Management songs from South America, some catchy For a free initial consultation Latin numbers like 'La Bamba', and an Contact us on: unforgettable version of Tele: 01263 821147 Jeff Wayne's 'War Of The EͲmail: paul@myersͲgroup.co.uk Worlds' complete with the Website: www.myersͲgroup.co.uk Richard Burton spoken introduction - it was absolutely stunning! No wonder the audience didn't want to go home afterwards and kept calling out for more!
His choice of instrument was in fact two Yamaha keyboards linked together, with a separate pedal board for his feet, all running through a top quality amplification system, and the resulting sounds had to be heard to be believed. As usual with the Briston Organ Shows, proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments benefitted the Copeman Centre's funds to the tune of £151.20, and the ladies who run a fundraising stall for the East Anglian Air Ambulance raised £68 for that very worthy cause too. What a great result it was for everyone.

‘Bonnie & Clyde’ in Trimingham? - Norfolk band’s new pop video
Norfolk rockers The Sharps release their new single and music video ‘Cage of Love’ this month, along with a limited free download of the song.
The band has just finished recording their debut EP at Headline Music Studios in Cambridge. Entitled ‘Road Movies’, it will be released on 10 December. Along with ‘Cage of Love’, it features three new songs and a re-mastered version of their previous single, ‘My Love Ain’t Gonna Save You’.
It’s been a busy few months for the boys. As well as hastily putting out a short music video about their friend Jamie Fox, the famous Norfolk ‘Human Scarecrow’, the band has just completed a mini-UK tour. Gigging in London, Southampton, Cambridge and Leicester, The Sharps also performed a live acoustic version of ‘Cage of Love’ on BBC Norfolk.
They are currently booking a full UK tour for February and March next year, with help from their recently-signed, London-based publisher, Rainbird Music Ltd.
The ‘Cage of Love’ video, written, directed by and starring the band in multiple roles, makes use of the Norfolk landscapes in its road movie style. It parodies films such as ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’, focussing on three outlaws who escape from prison and steal

a van in their desperate attempt to find freedom. Where in ‘Thelma & Louise’ the finale sees the couple reach the edge of the Grand Canyon, these local lads wind up at the more modest cliffs at Trimingham Beach. The band was given permission to shoot a scene at the Feathers pub in their hometown Aylsham, in which drummer Sam Evans plays a barmaid. Last month the pub also allowed local band 24 Robbers to shoot part of the video to their song ‘Halloween Hitlist’ in its premises. “The flat, epic landscapes in rural Norfolk make the perfect backdrop for a road movie,” says Callum Morgan, bassist and singer in The Sharps. “We’re very lucky to live somewhere people are willing to help out.”

It’s that time again when Blickling Hall plays host to some traditional Christmas fayre over the first 3 weekends of December. Come and be welcomed by characters from the past into this wonderful stately home, beautifully decorated for the festive season and be tempted by an array of exclusive gift ideas.
Wander through the house into the garden, where a trail of decorated, lit Christmas trees lead you to a temple, where you will be drawn in by the welcoming aroma of mulled wine and mince pies. The “Christmas Courtyard” will be home to a marquee full of Christmas gift ideas as well as festive snacks and drinks. Christmas trees, wreaths and greenery will also be on sale along with garden gifts, hot chestnuts and other seasonal delights. Father Christmas will be in his grotto each day to take those all important orders and there will be traditional Christmas lunches served in a decorated Lord Lothian’s study or less formally, in Hobarts on demand. The air will be full of festive cheer, with music and carols to ensure that you leave, touched by the spirit of Christmas.
Over 8-9 December, the accent in the marquee in the ‘Christmas Courtyard’ will be on Toys and Games, including a Xmas trail and additional activities for children. And the final weekend, 15-16 December, the marquee will be adorned with Christmas Fayre – including a fabulous selection of delicious local food & drink.
Doors open 11am-5pm and access to the Christmas Courtyard, the shop and restaurant is free. Entry to the house & gardens will be free for National Trust members, with a special price of £9 for adults and £4.50 for children.
