Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Some exciting news for the New Year - the Sheringham Independent is expanding its circulation to 5600 copies printed fortnightly.
The delivery through letterboxes will continue at the same level as before (approx 4600) but with more pick-up points established in surrounding villages. A full list will appear in the first edition of 2013, published on January 17th/18th.
We hope that you will like some of the other changes we are making to the magazine as well, including the addition of colour throughout the magazine. Eric, Pete and Margaret and all our staff and distributors wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas break and prosperous New Year.

"It was with great sadness that we received the news of the deaths of Keith and Andrea Johnson. Keith was a conscientious colleague, committed public servant and, above all, a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and all those who knew and loved them.
"I have met with my fellow Conservative Councillors this afternoon and we have agreed that, as Keith's deputy, I should become acting group leader while we are all allowed time to grieve and to consider the future.
"Keith and Andrea were wonderful people and we shall remember them always with affection."

Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson explained the film screenings were always popular in Sheringham but now she hoped even more movie-lovers would come along.
“Audiences will be able to see more recent film releases with us and they will be amazed by our all-new cinema experience. The new screen and sound system are fabulous,” she said.
Statement issued by Tom Fitzpatrick, the Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council, following a meeting of the Conservative Council Group on the day the news was released:

ÂŁ600 tax cut for working families Fuel Duty raise scrapped
Changes to the personal tax allowance announced in today’s Autumn Statement will mean that by April, income tax bills will have been cut by £600 a year.
People working full time on the minimum wage will have seen their income tax bill cut in half. Raising the personal allowance was a flagship Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment.
In Norfolk, 34,040 people have been lifted out of tax altogether since 2010. 312,300 people in the county will get a tax cut from April next year.
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb welcomed the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement which also included measures to tackle tax avoidance and evasion, extra spending for transport, skills and schools, and cancelling January’s planned increase in fuel duty.
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said: “My priority, and the priority of the Liberal Democrats, is to ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share and to help the ordinary families who need it most. The measures announced today reflect that commitment: cutting income tax for those on low and middle incomes, cancelling the
planned fuel duty rise and increasing the basic state pension by 2.5% in line with the commitment to the triple lock, a Lib Dem manifesto commitment. At the same time, the Coalition Government is clamping down on tax evasion and introducing the first ever General Anti-Abuse Rule – something Labour never did in their thirteen years in power. It is clear that we still have a long way to go to fix our damaged economy, but we are on the right track.
The Chancellor also announced reforms to the last government’s controversial Private Finance Initiative, which locked some schools, hospitals and Government buildings into poor value contracts, at great expense to the taxpayer.
The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital was one of the first NHS hospitals to be built under the PFI scheme. The contract was renegotiated just three years after it was first signed and costs local taxpayers ÂŁ37.7m for each of the 35 years of the contract.

Everyone is welcome at the Army!
The new Private Finance 2 (PF2) model will help secure better value by allowing the taxpayer to take a share in projects. The new system will also be more transparent, requiring projects to publish financial performance figures every year. Existing PFI deals have been renegotiated and ÂŁ2.5bn of savings made.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said:
“The announcement on PFI is really significant. The last Labour government were utterly careless with taxpayers’ money, spending vast sums on these poor value contracts.
“PF2 will ensure that the taxpayer shares in the profits from these projects. In the past, the proceeds simply lined the pockets of private contractors.

Failure to address ambulance targets should trigger u-turn on cuts, argues Labour
Cuts to the ambulance fleet in north Norfolk should be overturned after the ambulance service failed to reach vital targets for another month, North Norfolk Labour Party has argued. The local Labour party, which created the Act on Ambulances petition with over 8000 signatures, was assured by the East of England Ambulance that if demand continued to increase and response times were not addressed in the rota shake-up they would request more funding to ensure all cuts are overturned in north Norfolk.
However, it was revealed in November that the ambulance service in north Norfolk had failed to reach the A8 target to reach at least 75pc of most serious calls within 8 minutes, and fewer than a quarter of Norfolk stroke victims had reached hospital within the 60 minute guidelines.
“These figures confirm what we have been hearing on the ground from patients who have suffered from long waits for an ambulance," said Denise Burke of North Norfolk Labour Party. “They highlight the pressure the ambulance service is under with the £50m of government cuts they have to make. The data also shows that even before these cuts were made the ambulance service did not

Members recently enjoyed an entertaining and informative evening with a talk given by Icarus Hines, the local well known butcher. He told us how he came to his trade after a less than successful schooling by extending a Saturday job, from the age of 15, at Baxter’s butcher shop in Dereham and found that he was considered a ‘natural’ at butchery.
After a brief break in which he began a course on training as a chef, he returned to his chosen trade with Dewhurst butchers and in time became manager of their shops in Swaffham, North Walsham and Bowthorpe, before coming to Cromer in 1986 when he opened his own shop, ‘Mack’s’ initially with father and son business partners, before branching out alone and coming to Sheringham. George, the ‘father’ of his partnership, can still be seen around both Cromer and Sheringham in the form of George the butcher who stands outside each shop.
We were entertained with anecdotes from his career as Icarus traced the changes in taste of meats and presentation, the cuts and various sauces which come and go in fashion and the rise in popularity of ‘fast food’ chains such as MacDonalds alongside the increase and enjoyment of barbecued meats.

Questions were invited from the audience which resulted in discussion and useful cookery tips.
Icarus finished his presentation with a light-hearted introduction to his 2013 ‘saucy’ calendar in which George makes many appearances. These can be found at both of his shops and are free, with an invitation to donate to The Big C Charity.
In a previous meeting of the Association members of the committee shared memories of their lives in the 50s, resulting in nostalgia for many things including stiff petticoats and vinyl records. Later this month we will be sharing a Christmas meal cooked for us on the premises at St Andrew’s Hall which promises to be enjoyable.

Sheringham church site flattened
The site for Sheringham Baptists’ new church centre has now been cleared, following demolition of the old Abbeyfield House, and the generosity of church members has provided enough funds for building work to commence.
fund-raising events through the year, including table-top sales, book sales, a plant sale, Christmas Fayre, cosmetics evening, Barn Dance, Music Night etc.
The brand new centre for Sheringham Baptist Church on Cromer Road in the town will occupy a site almost three times as large as their current Holway Road premises. Contractors have been clearing the site, and foundations are about to be laid. It is expected that the steel frame will be erected in January.
A recent members’ gift day has raised gifts and pledges amounting to £72,000, with offerings still coming in. “We know that God wants us to
build this new centre, and we are trusting Him for the funds”, said church treasurer Chris Gould. “This is an amazing amount to have raised this time, however, as it follows three previous gift days, and comes at a time when regular giving for general church finances is also holding up well.”
Donations are now starting to arrive from grant-making trusts, and a grant of £20,000 from one source has just been announced. In addition, there have been a number of
“This will be a superb modern purpose-built centre for the church and the community” said the church’s Pastor Brayn Pickard. “It will not just be a worship centre, but will house a number of activities for the benefit of local people. We want this to be a place where Sheringham folk feel they call in and be a part of.”
Anyone wishing to contribute should send an e-mail to Chris Gould at treasurer@sheringhambaptistchurch.co.uk. More information can be found on the church website : www.sheringhambaptistchurch.co.uk. The church also has a presence on Twitter and Facebook; type Sheringham Baptist Church New Build into Facebook for the latest news. Autumn Notes from the Commons
On a fine sunny September (1st ) morning, dragonflies were still actively hawking over the Newt Pond, with the large bronzed-winged Brown Hawker joining the more familiar blue and green- bodied Southern Hawkers. Basking in the sunlight on the mauve water mint in the marsh, the same morning, was also a large black and yellow hoverfly, Sericomyiasilentis, whose larvae develop in small boggy pools. As the good weather continued, the Ruddy and Common Darter dragonflies, Red Admirals, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood and Small Copper butterflies were all still actively feeding (3rd Sept). A strange fly, Conopsquadrifasciata, was noted (4th Sept). These flies are part of a group of parasitic flies, whose hosts include wasps and bees.
A Hobby passed westwards (5th Sept) and another was noted heading east by Mark Clements, the following day. Work again took
me away from the Common for the next month but Mark and others continued the observations. The first skein of the Pink-footed Goose was reported by Mark (14th Sept) numbering 25 and heading west. Also on 14th Sept, Nick Owens, visited the Commons and observed Barbut’s Cuckoo Bumblebee – the 13th species of bumblebee recorded for the site. Norfolk has presently 18 bumblebees, so with 13 recorded, the Commons are an important area for the group. Nick also reported a number of Bog Bush Crickets present in the central mire. An uncommon beetle turned up (18th Sept) and was observed
Sullivan
by Mark. It was the Red-breasted Carrion Beetle, which has only been recorded once before on the Commons, prior to 1987 by Ken Durrant.
The autumn migration was well under way as September drew to a close, with Mark recording Redstart and 150+ Swallows passing over the Commons (26th Sept).Mark also spotted five Common Buzzards, 25 Cormorants, a Curlew, a Firecrest and 24 Jays (4th Oct). It was an interesting period for Jays, as all along the coast large numbers of these colourful birds were observed heading in from the sea. Counts exceeding 600 birds were made at Hunstanton and the immigration was apparently due to a failure of the acorn crop in Europe, thus forcing the birds to seek new areas for food. By mid-October the winter visitors were arriving in strength with Redwing (18th Oct), Woodcock (21st Oct), Fieldfare (22nd Oct), Brambling (24th Oct) and Water Rail (25th Oct). The Water Rail was known to the old countrymen as the Danish Rail, which alluded to its arrival from Scandinavia. Another wanderer was noted over the Commons following some strong north-westerly gales (26th Oct), a bird more typically seen over the open sea, an adult Gannet.
It was seen to circle the Commons then apparently drop down as if to land. A couple of days later I was told that it had indeed landed, in Sheringwood, where it was found exhausted and taken the following day to the Animal Rescue Centre at Bacton.

As November came so did other migrants and the beautiful Waxwings put in a brief appearance with
two overflying the Commons (7th Nov). Redpolls and Siskins were also moving in small parties at this time. Following the mowing of some of the marshes by English Nature contractors, the open space gave three Foxes (17th Nov) the chance to play and a Barn Owl to hunt (18th Nov). Towards the end of the month some quiet still days saw some quite large movements of Pink-footed Geese and a small group of seven Bewick’s Swans also passed south-east (24th Nov). Wild swans are quite a rarity in this area and the last record for Bewick’s over the Commons was back in 1986.
The weather, for the most part throughout the autumn period, has remained open with few frosts recorded. Will we get another snowy/cold winter or is it going to remain relatively mild?

Sheringham Lifeboat returns home
The Sheringham Museum is pleased to announce that the B702 Atlantic 75 lifeboat that served in Sheringham between 1994 and 2007 has returned home following a five year stint in Northern Ireland. This has been made possible through a kind donation to the museum from the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows who originally purchased her for the town.
B702 was the first Atlantic 75 class lifeboat to enter full operational service for the RNLI after the prototype and initial test vessel, which makes her a special piece of lifeboat history. She was the permanent replacement for the Oakley class Manchester Unity of Oddfellows lifeboat which is also currently on display in the Sheringham Museum. The museum now owns 4 of Sheringham’s original lifeboats. When including the Henry Ramey Upcher and
Solo Hair Major Refurbishment
current Atlantic 85 lifeboat, this brings the town’s total to six original Sheringham Lifeboats – unique to any other town in the country.
Museum Manager Philip Miles said: “Weather conditions for the delivery weren’t perfect with high winds and rain, but the skill of the RNLI crane operator and the teams past experiences with boats made the process run smoothly. The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows will be a fantastic addition to the museum collection and I can’t wait to get her on display to the public.”
In the first two weeks of January, Solo Hair Fashions will be undergoing some major refurbishment. Nigel and Sharon told the Independent, “We will be closed for the first two weeks, both the main workrooms in the salon will be having a complete makeover, including new furniture, plastering and decorating. Although the salon will be closed between January 1st and 14th, we will keep as many appointments as possible by way of home visits. Should you wish to take advantage of this please call us.” “We are expecting to re-open on Tuesday 15th, but on the Monday we shall relaunch with a glass of bubbly - just pop in between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Everyone is welcome, no need to call.” There is also a 20% discount for your first visit to the salon in January or February.
RSPCA
The Manchester Unity of Odfellows B702 will be temporarily stored in a boat shed whilst extensive conservation work is undertaken to make her ready for museum display. This has already been partially undertaken by the RNLI who have fitted dummy engines and
stripped out internal fittings reducing the weight of the boat. The museum will now seek funding to install the boat permanently into the museum building, creating a new display area specifically designed to accommodate her.
The museum will be open between the 27th and 30th December with a temporary display showing the B702 Atlantic 75’s history in Sheringham using photographs from the museum archive, including new images from her delivery this week. There will also be a chance to see the newly installed RNLI first day cover exhibition featuring over 240 UK lifeboat images and Coxswains signatures spanning 40 years, recently donated to the museum by Ron Pegg. Visitors are reminded that three hours free parking in Council Car Parks on Sundays has been provided by NNDC during December making a trip to the museum even better value for money.
The local Branch of the RSPCA (East Norfolk) are appealing for cat food to help feed the cats over the busy Christmas period. Currently we are full to capacity and are having many more abandoned and neglected animals than ever before.
You can help by popping a tin of food or sachet in to the RSPCA support charity shop at 11 Mundesley Road, North Walsham.
Also if anyone has any large dog crates they no longer require these can be useful in emergency situations, or for animals on cage rest.
If you would like to re-home one of our cats please call 07867 972870 all our animals are in a private boarding cattery in Stalham or with foster carers throughout our branch area. Brandy in the picture is just one of our cats looking for his forever home.

He has just come out of Phantom of the Opera, is currently starring in Billy Elliot and will appear with Russell Crowe in January’s big screen sensation Les Misérables.
But Killian Donnelly says what he is most looking forward to at the moment is Jack and the Beanstalk at the Sheringham Little Theatre. It was back in June that the Irish performer was persuaded to write and direct the seasonal show for the Norfolk town’s venue, when theatre director Debbie Thompson’s 14 yearold daughter Katie contacted him via Twitter.
“I love doing panto – coming up with the stories and writing the sketches,” he admits. “I was so pleased when Katie asked me if I would be involved. I was excited to be taking my work to such an intimate venue and I had never been to Norfolk before.”
Katie, a pupil at Sheringham High, had been following Killian on Twitter since seeing him star as Raoul in hit musical Phantom of the Opera, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket.
And, to her surprise, he responded to her suggestion and sent her mother a script for Jack and the Beanstalk.
Originally, says Killian, 28, the plan was that he would direct the entire show but now a co-director, Damien Douglas, has been brought in to help out. “I was really looking forward to doing the whole thing but was then offered the role of Billy’s older brother Tony, in Billy Elliot,” he explains. “I realised I would not be able to dedicate as much time as I had hoped to the panto so this seemed a good solution.”
Killian, who comes from Kilmessan, in County Meath, Ireland, joined West End show Les Misérables as “a swing” (a cast member who is always ready to substitute a number of minor roles) but quickly won more major parts in the production. He then moved into Phantom and won roles in television shows including The Last Furlong and The Tudors.
“I started in Billy Elliot in November and am finding Tony a great part to play,” he says. “He is a very driven character, who, unlike Billy, is similar to his dad – and doesn’t understand why his brother is into ballet.”
But, says Killian, 2012 has also been an exciting year for him as he has been filming for the new Les Misérables
movie, which opens in January, and stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.
“I play Combeferre, one of the students at the ABC Café,” he explains. “I spent two months of the summer filming and I loved working with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. They were both so down to earth. I had to get into a fight with Russell Crowe’s character, which was great fun.”
Killian says he likes to “put his fingers into a lot of different pies” but stresses panto remains a passion.
“It is such a joy to do something like a pantomime and to be able to take it to children in Norfolk at Christmas. There really is something quite magical about it all.”
*Jack and the Beanstalk runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from Wednesday, December 5 to Saturday, January 5. For more information or for tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

Christmas Seaside Special review
The Christmas Show opened at The Pavilion Theatre Cromer on the 1st December with a spectacular performance of variety entertainment.
Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed, has created a highly professional and massively entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg, Musical Director and arranger.
Olly Day linked the whole show brilliantly in a lighthearted and entertaining way, assisted in no "little" way by Jo Little, comedienne, whose personality and talent shone through.
The two lead singers, Lulu Alexander and Cromers own Eddie Bushell gave us tremendous performances with great solo efforts, but also featured in the whole company scenes. Lulu also gave us a brief glimpse of her

talent as a championship skater. Helen Gulston and James Morgan who are part of the superb Seaside Special Dancers joined Lulu and Eddie to great effect as the Christmas Quartet.
The Seaside Special dancers gave their usual talented, enthusiastic and high octane performance supported by the delightful and extremely talented children of Marlene's School of Dancing. Marlene also provided the brilliant members of the Youth Choir who linked well with the professional cast members. We can certainly be proud of our local performers.
The scenery was designed by Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations, costumes by Laura Whyte and sound and lighting by Amanda Hill added greatly to the enjoyment of the show. A very talented bunch.
This is a fantastic show which runs until 30th December so book early to get into the Christmas Spirit.

Over the past 21 years together with the local www.faracharityshops.org population and government, FARA has been assisting hundreds of children and young people, many of them with mental and physical disabilities, forgotten and locked away in horrible state institutions, often living a life of daily abuse. We’ve grown into an organisation of excellence, developing innovative programmes to ensure that these marginalised children and young people are able to live a dignifying life and accepted in their own community. Police cold caller warning Police are reminding residents to be vigilant to cold callers in the run-up to Christmas.
The warning comes as ACPOs (Association of Chief Police Officers) National Burglary Awareness campaign focuses on distraction burglary – crimes where people trick or distract residents in order to gain entry to their property.
The most common form is for people to pretend to be from a water company, gas or electric provider and trick the homeowner into thinking they need urgent access to his phone. Other methods include pretending to be doing repairs or maintenance or impersonating figures of authority to enter homes.
Detective Sergeant Pete Jessop, from Norfolk Constabulary’s Operation RADAR team, which specialises in doorstep crime, said while offences had fallen significantly in recent years it still pays to be vigilant.
“I would urge people to remain vigilant when they receive a knock on their door. Cold callers are men or women or make up stories to gain access to a person’s home to steal and will often prey on the vulnerable such as the elderly.
certainly think twice before inviting anyone into your house. A genuine caller should not mind you checking.”
Police would also give the following advice:
• Close and lock the back door before answering the front door
• Use a spy hole or window to look at the caller before answering the door.
• Elderly householders should be on their guard and members of the public who have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative should be vigilant.
• Always ask for identification from any unexpected callers and do not let anyone in if you are not comfortable with who they are.
“If you do decide to open the door to someone, ensure that you ask for identification and

• Tell someone you trust about uninvited callers to your home. • If necessary, report it to police

The First Day’s Trading at Waitrose
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb visited the new Waitrose store in North Walsham last month to hear from staff about their first day of trading.
Commenting, Mr Lamb said “There were an amazing number of people in the store and everyone is so pleased it has opened. The staff were very positive. This could be a real boost for the town. Local traders, on the whole, are supportive and I am glad that Waitrose is working closely with the town’s Chamber of Trade. I hope that this will lift the whole town, particularly now in the run-up to Christmas.”

Nathan’s recipe for Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients 400g Fresh Cranberries - 240g Caster Sugar - 3 tbsp Cherry Brandy 75ml Water - 3 Bay Leaves - Lemon Juice (optional) Method Place all the ingredients in a nonstick pan and simmer on a low heat until the sauce thickens. The North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club supports the ‘Foodbank’
Having enjoyed a festive Lunch at The Links Country Park Hotel the members supported a raffle with prizes donated by “Dawn Fresh” “The Links” and others.
Sufficient money was raised to enable the Club to purchase over £180 worth of Fray Bentos Pies and Puddings and other tinned meat products which the Sheringham and Cromer “Foodbank” coordinator Kevin Willimott indicated were needed to supplement the other generous donations which had been made by local people and firms.

Dear Margaret
AVIAN PREDATORS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SONGBIRD DECLINE
In response to the article ‘Songbird Survival’ in the 24 November edition of The Sheringham Independent, I would like to add a few relevant observations.
This is a complex problem with numerous factors responsible for the decline. Mr Bullimore expresses his concern for ‘the effects of increasing predation on songbirds’. It would have been helpful if he had specified which predators he means. However when I spoke to him, about a year ago, he was convinced that birds of prey and the sparrowhawk in particular are causing songbird decline. Scientific research has already established that this is not the case. The sparrowhawk is the main avian predator of small birds up to the size of the wood pigeon. However it should be noted that the Norfolk Bird & Mammal Report for 2011 states that there were only 16 breeding pairs recorded. Obviously some nests would have been undetected and even with the addition of passage birds, the dramatic decline could not be attributed to this species alone.
There are other predators such as stoats, weasels, rats, badgers, foxes, grey squirrels and corvids. However the main mammalian predator is the domestic feline bringing home 55 million birds annually in the UK. This does not include other birds either eaten or damaged in the field. Songbirds that winter in Africa have yet another problem. They have to traverse the Mediterranean Sea in spring and autumn and each time must run the gauntlet of the so-called ‘Mediterranean hunters’. These individuals kill 1 BILLION birds annually.
Last year BTO researchers trapped five Cuckoos in Norfolk and fitted tiny geolocators before releasing them. Satellite-tracking technology allowed each bird’s progress to be followed all the way to the Congo in central West Africa. On the return journey two of them died in the Sahel region just south of the Sahara desert. The most likely reason for their deaths was lack of food. At this time of year it is the dry season in the Sahel and there are few insects available to enable them to put on fat, which is the fuel needed for the return flight.
Twenty years ago insects were so abundant locally that they smeared the car windscreen, even on quite short journeys. This is not the case today as insects are much scarcer now due to the cumulative effect of insecticides in our arable farming areas. By contrast in Teesdale, for example, the situation is quite different as arable farming is virtually non-existent and therefore insecticides unnecessary. Instead cattle and sheep farming dominates so there are masses of Swallows which are able to raise two or three broods each summer. Thus in East Anglia avian predators play only a small part in the decline of songbirds; other factors are much more potent.

Pupil worries about speeding outside school
Norman Lamb MP has written to Norfolk County Council about speeding in Gresham village following an email from a young constituent.
Eleanor Bailey, a Year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class at Gresham village school, emailed the MP because of her worries about speeding cars outside the school. She wants to see a 20mph limit both outside the school and in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer.
Every day in the UK, 19 adults and seven children are knocked down and killed or seriously hurt when on foot or bike. Road safety charity Brake is campaigning for local authorities to make 20mph speed limits the norm across built-up areas and for drivers to slow down near schools and shops. In a national hands-up survey conducted in schools, Brake found that 74% of pupils in East Anglia thought that drivers should go slower around their school or home.
In her email Eleanor said “I am a year 6 pupil in Kingfisher class (yrs 4,5,6) in Gresham village school. I am taking some of my spare time at home to write to you about the speed limits outside the school. It should be 20mph and regular speed checks around there. As well there should be 20mph around the corner in the far end of the village on the way to Cromer!”
Commenting, her father Arthur said “It is no good saying sorry afterwards; a slight delay will not cause you any problems, but it can save a child’s life.”
Norman Lamb MP said “I commend Eleanor for raising the question of safety around her school. I strongly support the case for 20mph limits, as a matter of course, outside schools. This seems to me to be a very sensible standard principle. Walking and cycling are excellent ways to stay healthy and active so it is a shame that fears about road safety put people off.”

Kelling Probus Club
At the October meeting Chairman Terry Penrose welcomed 25 members and one guest. He asked them to stand in silence to remember Vic Allen who had been Chairman twice and also served as secretary.
After lunch, Probus member Dr Michael Bennett entertained us with an impromptu account of his time working in Trinidad in the 1950s during the last days of colonialism.
A chance remark by his Professor at Kings College had led him to the London office of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. With nearly 100 ex-patriot scientists, it was one of the world’s leading agricultural institutes, doing research into a range of tropical crops. One of the projects concerned sugarcane, and it had been decided to recruit a specialist in colloid chemistry – Michael’s own field for his PhD.
He had just married Mollie, who was a King’s College Hospital physiotherapist, and they willingly took the opportunity to work in such a prestigious outpost of the British Empire. In 1954 there were no direct flights, so they sailed for 14 days across the Atlantic in the SS Golfito, a Fyffe Line banana boat – of shallow draught and without stabilisers ! On board they struck up a friendship with Clyde Walcott, the West Indian cricketing hero, and his family, who kindly showed them around Barbados for three days and introduced them to the then problems of segregation.
Professionally, Michael found that the sugar industry was largely unexplored by his specialism, and he was able to make rapid progress: Mollie had been recruited immediately into the local Health Authority to help in the polio epidemic. Socially, he and
Mollie were enjoying their life with two quite separate circles of friends - ex-patriot colonial Academia and West Indian Medics - which, perhaps, would have been unthinkable 10 years earlier. He recounted some amusing tales of their experiences in this bygone age. During their second 3-year term at the College, as Trinidad approached Independence, things began to change, and when Michael got an offer to join Tate & Lyle in the UK, they decided, with regrets, that this was the time to bring their young family home.
Michael was roundly applauded for his entertaining insight into the dying days of Caribbean colonialism.
Three new members, Bruce Bedwell, Geoff Goodman and Bill Day, gave brief introductory talks on their ‘previous lives’.
NB Please note the changed date of the next Probus meeting which will be held on Thursday 22nd.
Motoring Future Comes to North Norfolk
The future of motoring has arrived in North Norfolk after local car retailer Crayford and Abbs Ltd was appointed to join Nissan’s expanding elite band network of specialist EV (Electric Vehicle) outlets last month. The exciting appointment means the Bodham dealership is now able to sell and service the groundbreaking Nissan LEAF – the world’s bestselling 100% electric car.
Meanwhile, Crayford and Abbs Ltd will also become a popular destination for existing LEAF drivers as it has been fitted with a hightech charging point – part of an ever expanding nationwide network.
It follows a period of intensive manufacturer-led training for dealership staff and the appointment of James Abbs as a dedicated Electric Vehicle Relationship Manager on hand to assist customers with all driving and ownership queries.
And Kevin Abbs is predicting no shortage of interest in the stunning LEAF – the 2011 World and European Car of the Year – from potential customers eager to experience its winning combination of zero-emissions, ultra low running costs and effortless practicality.
Kevin Abbs said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for our business and for the region’s motorists. By becoming a Nissan specialist EV dealer we have effectively made 100% electric motoring an affordable and practical reality for the motorists of North Norfolk”
He added: “The Nissan LEAF is an incredible vehicle which drives and handles just like a conventionally-powered car. But the benefits are amazing. The running costs are super low while trips to the filling station and forking out for things like road tax and congestion charges instantly become a thing of the past.
A spacious and generously equipped family hatchback, the LEAF is capable of travelling up to 109 miles on a single charge which could cost as little as £2.03 on an overnight electricity tariff. In addition, its zero-emission battery-powered motor means it’s TILED ROOFS, SLATE ROOFS, LEAD ROOFS, completely exempt from road tax and the FLAT ROOFS, CHURCH ROOFS, LEAD FLASHINGS, London Congestion GUTTERING & FASCIAS Charge.

The Nissan LEAF is available now priced from £25,900 (including a £5,000 government grant).
