Sheringham Playpark Fund Grows
The heavens opened once more on the Sheringham Playpark on a late December day but this time it wasn't just rain that soaked the parents and children who are raising funds for a well overdue upgrade of the facilities.
of our community. Your generous gift has made us ever more determined to continue fundraising until we reach our goal. We will provide Sheringham with a modern play park that would make Jamie proud and leave his name as a lasting legacy for this town. Thank you to Nessa, Emily, Chris and all the family." Also on hand was Brian Hannah, local councillor who is supporting the project, which needs to raise around £100,000. "I'll be doing what I can to help, but we all know times are difficult and the settlement from the government is not good."
Nessa Wright, widow of Jamie Wright who was just 38 when he died from a rare blood disorder in mid October, made a special trip to present a cheque for £1245.73 to the Revamp Fund. Crab & Lobster Festival hands out grants totaling £7,500 to community groups across Cromer and Sheringham
Last month the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival proudly handed over grants totalling £7,500 to local charities and organisations from monies raised at this year’s Charity Windbreak Auction.
This year the Fishermen’s Mission was chosen as the Festival’s main charity for the vital support the Mission gives to fishermen and their families. On behalf of the Mission, senior superintendent Tim Jenkins, collected a cheque for £2,500.
The remaining £5,000 was distributed between fourteen local organisations who joined members of the Festival’s committee at a presentation on Sunday 2 December at The Constantia where cheques were presented to local groups who work tirelessly for the benefit of the local community.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp opened the presentation by thanking all those who had helped make the Festival and auction in 2012 such a success, as well as all those who had worked to construct the Crab Pot Christmas Tree in Cromer. The grants were handed out to representatives from
the organisations present by Festival presidents Hilary Thompson and Noel Gant.
The organisations who received grants from the scheme were Open Door Community Arts, Sheringham U18s Football Team, Suffield Park Infant & Nursery School, Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association, The Cromer Bells Project, RNLI Cromer, After Breast Cancer Sheringham, Cromer & North Norfolk Festival of Music, Dance & Speech, Cromer Exhibition Foundation, Cromer Christmas Lights, Sidestrand Hall School, Cromer & District Garden Society and Age UK North Norfolk. On receiving their grant, After Breast Cancer Sheringham said “this grant will enable the group to keep going. We were in a position where we could only survive until Christmas but this grant means we can keep going for another year”.
Many of the projects which were successful will be working will local school children including Sidestrand Hall School (funding a School Garden), Cromer Tennis Club (funding free taster session in local
schools) and the Cromer & District Garden Society (funding their annual Schools Garden Competition). Cromer Exhibition Foundation will use their grant to provide grants to Cromer school children who are going onto Further or Higher Education to help with course materials.
Representatives from Age UK North Norfolk said their grant would go towards their ‘Learning to Live Again’ programme which helps older people access activities throughout North Norfolk.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “this year’s grants help to continue the Festival’s tradition of raising money for local charities through the Annual Charity Auction and we are delighted that so many local community groups will benefit from them”.
Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £24,000 to local charities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and community groups are more important than ever before and these grants will really help at a grassroots level.
The Festival will be announcing details of their annual art trail for 2013 in January. In 2013 the Festival will run 17-19 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival via enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Sheringham Independent Expands
The Sheringham Independent will continue to deliver 4700 copies through the letterboxes of residents and businesses in the town through 2013. However we have been asked to expand our coverage into surrounding villages as well as to enable those not on one of our regular rounds to collect their copy from convenient locations. We will now have a circulation of 5,600. The pick-up points so far arranged are listed below - there are more to be agreed which we will list next month. The other two magazines in the Rose Villa Publications group - the North Walsham Times and Cromer Times will also be increasing the number of copies printed - Cromer will rise to 6,000 in total and North Walsham to 6400. They will be covering locations such as Mundesley, Trunch, the Runtons, Holt and Bodham as well as Aylmerton and Alby, which do not have a letterbox round. We do not know how many readers we have, but what we do know is that most people in Sheringham like to read our magazine. We hope that in the coming year we will be able to continue to make our magazines the most read in North Norfolk.

Save a Life for Your New Year’s Resolution People from Sheringham are being asked to consider saving a life or three for their New Year’s resolution by giving blood in 2013. As the festive cheer leaves us and people ponder how to make the New Year better than the last, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is challenging people to spare an hour of their time to donate blood.
The New Year’s resolution message comes at a time when there a need to recruit new donors after a dramatic decline in the number of younger donors signing up in 2012. NHSBT aims to recruit 100,000 new donors in 100 days to counteract this drop and protect future blood stocks.
NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS
8
Tuesday 29 Janyary at ST ANDREW METHODIST CHURCH, CROMER ROAD, SHERINGHAM 1pm – 3.15pm and 4.30pm – 7pm
With blood donation sessions available for people to book an appointment throughout 2013, it is important that people from North Walsham help to maintain stocks as hospital demand for blood remains high at the start of the year.
Derek Carr, NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia region said “New Year’s resolutions have become a bit cliché over the past few years as people always set themselves up for big challenges they are unable to complete. Our challenge is a simple one plus we can guarantee donors a warm welcome, a hot cup of tea and a biscuit to help boost their sense of achievement not to mention the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping sick and injured people in local hospitals with each and every donation they make.”
Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Property at Auction
by Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr When buying a property at auction, you will find that it is very different to the normal conveyancing process. If you are the successful bidder then you have effectively exchanged contracts when the hammer falls, and both you and the seller will face financial penalties if either of you fail to complete the transaction on the completion date.
All investigations and surveys on the property must be done before the auction date, as you cannot back out of the purchase if you discover something untoward in your searches or survey after the hammer has fallen. This does mean that you will incur costs before the auction even though you may not be the successful bidder. The auctioneers will make an auction pack available, which contains legal documentation
about the property, and the auctioneer’s terms and conditions. Your solicitor can advise you on this paperwork before the auction.
If you require a mortgage to buy a property at auction then it is wise to ensure that you have your mortgage offer before the date of the auction. If you do not, and your lender does not issue a mortgage offer or is not ready to release the funds in time to complete your purchase, you could lose the property and your deposit. If you are the successful bidder then you will be required to pay the deposit (usually 10%) immediately. The remainder of the purchase price will be payable on the completion date. The date for the completion of your purchase will be in the paperwork provided by the auctioneer and is usually 28 days after the date of the auction. If you do not proceed with your purchase you are likely to lose your 10% deposit and could also face a claim for additional costs from the seller.
A purchase at auction can sometimes be a bargain, but it is essential that you prepare properly before the date of the auction so that you know exactly what you are buying and you have the necessary funds in place.

Leonardo’s Osso Buco
Osso Buco means ‘slowly braised’ in Italian. This is a family recipe - my great-grandfather, Leonardo Bizzarri, was the former maître d’hôtel at the Savoy in London and studied under the legendary chef Georges August Escoffier. My great-grandfather retired to Overstrand, and in his dotage was a bit of an experimenter in the kitchen. He married the rich flavours of Escoffier’s stock to the succulent Norfolk beef he found here with fantastic results.
The recipe’s been passed on to me and is a great, simple dish that is a bestseller when it’s on the menu at the Grove.
We’ve had a really busy Christmas and New Year, and from January we’re introducing a real lunchtime bargain for all those hardy souls who brave the Norfolk winter. If you’re over fifty you can enjoy two courses for £10 (or £6.95 for one course) plus coffee off the specials boards from Wednesday through to Friday – great local food and a lovely setting to relax in front of the roaring woodburner.
I hope you enjoy Leonardo’s Osso Buco...

During the week the charity is encouraging people to get silly with their socks – organising activities such as wearing silly socks to school for the day, decorating socks in Beat’s colours, knitting socks and selling them on Ebay for charity and getting sports teams to wear silly socks for a training session or match.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As the branch enters its 13th year we do not know what challenges we face in order to help cats in our area. During 2012 we again re-homed over 200 cats and kittens and believe that before the end of this year we will re-home our 3,000th cat, quite an achievement for a small branch run entirely by volunteers. During last year we also paid for nearly 300 cats to be neutered from branch funds (this figure does not include those helped with our fixed payment vouchers) and we will continue to help people on low incomes and benefits in this way.
Several of the cats and kittens which came into care last year had health problems. Cats like Nemo and Dori, victims of road traffic accidents who required cage rest, or kittens like Dollar and Tuppence who developed polyps which have required extensive surgery because they had cat flu when quite young for which they did not receive treatment before joining us. Also older cats like Simba (diabetes) and Trinny (thyroid) both now on medication for life who have settled in new homes with caring new owners who understand their problems. Veterinary care is expensive but we will always help a cat if we possibly
Husky Dogs Attack on Sheringham Beach
can. Unfortunately, sometimes, we have to make the decision we all hate for the cat’s sake, as in the case of Sheba, the little stray who had a massive tumour in her mouth and could not eat.
At present we still have some of last year’s kittens in care that are now classed as young adults. They have seen their litter mates leave for new homes and for some unknown reason they have not been chosen. All are beautiful and, because they have been with us for longer than usual, are well loved by their carers. Kittens like Tiger Moth, Comet, Piggy Malone Golly, Penny, Bluey, Graham, Patsy,Vulcan and Dakota, who are all micro chipped, vaccinated and neutered, and will make lovely companions giving lots of pleasure to their new families.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Do you know, or are you the owners of, three Husky dogs, two of which attacked a small Lakeland Terrier on Sheringham Beach on Sunday 30 December between 1pm and 2pm? The owners of the Huskies did not stop and may not have realised that the Terrier was badly injured and required veterinary treatment for biting wounds. These owners continued walking with their dogs towards West Runton & Cromer. The Terrier's distinctive collar and identity tags were also lost in the attack. Happy New Year!
At Miramar vets we are looking forward to some exciting changes in 2013. We are sad to be losing Daniel our South African vet, who is moving on to pastures new. We wish him every success in the future with his move and career. We will be welcoming Jennifer to the practice in early January, she will be stepping into Dan’s shoes. Jenni trained at Edinburgh, recently qualifying, and has been working on a research project into new graduate education. We have also launched our new website go to www.miramarvets.co.uk for all the latest news and promotions. Throughout January we have a special promotion on all our ‘lifestage’ foods made by Royal Canin. Sheringham Society Coffee Mornings
The talk in November was given by Bishop David Leake, formerly Bishop of Argentina. It was a most fascinating story of his life as a missionary amongst the indigenous tribes in the north of the country. He and his wife, Rachel, raised their three children with the tribal children and without any amenities such as running water or electricity. It made our lives here in the United Kingdom seem really luxurious.
There was no talk in December, but 32 members had a Christmas lunch at the Beaumaris Hotel. We had an excellent lunch, as indeed we did last year. It was a very jolly gathering and I think everyone enjoyed it.

Who rattled your cage? I've followed with interest the recent exchanges about computing and local politics, and chortled at your stance. Well, your column wouldn't be 'Grumpy' unless taking a swipe at something now would it? And I suspect most readers take it with a fair pinch of salt, albeit secretly agreeing or disagreeing with some of the gist (thought: how you must miss Alf Garnett!). However, I do feel for those who dare to disagree with you, such as Jan, who received a rather patronising response to what I thought sounded like a very positive story. And as for Brian, who stuck his neck out in defence of long-serving councillors, I shudder to think what you might say ('hit a raw nerve' perhaps?). Yours is a powerful position, such as it is when protected by a Harry Potteresque 'Cloak of Invisibility'... so try not to be too defensive when others think differently please. After all, taking the politics point, it sounds like you'd be the sort of bloke to approach the experienced older chap with the Brillcream parting in the DIY shop rather than the newly rotated, though arguably more independent, spotty youth (apologies to any new councillors who have long forgotten about the trials of teenage acne). Typed from my new IPAD4 (Jan.. you know what that means even if he may think it's a four bedroom flat). Yours sincerely A Nonnie Mouse, (name & address supplied) Editorial Note - Yes, Grumpy is meant to be taken with a pinch of salt - sometimes the issues may be a little controversial, but also there are some issues that are worth airing.

Grumpy Old Man - A Word in your Face I have noticed with increasing irritation how usage of the English language is becoming sloppier and unthinkingly formulaic, with broadcasters, news publishers and even the Prime Minister getting into the habit of saying the same thing twice - for example 7 p.m. this evening or 10 a.m. this morning, as if catering for people who have no idea what a.m. and p.m. mean. Even worse is 17.30 p.m. this afternoon! The time honoured (no pun intended) word ‘o’clock’ has fallen out of favour – too old fashioned I suppose, but Bill Hailey singing ‘One, two three p.m., four p.m. rock’ rather lacks the same impact.
The latest example which had me reaching for my pen as I perused my newspaper is – electronic e-mail! I suppose it will not be long before somebody states they have received an electronic e-mail on their computer, just to make sure we are aware it didn’t drop through their
letterbox in a stamped envelope.
Nick Robinson, reporting on BBC News, has just referred to prisoners on early release reoffending again. Re-offending is all that is needed, unless they are repeatedly re-offending, in which case say so.
My point is that these careless little slips in the correct use of grammar, of which there is an increasing number, mean misunderstandings and misinterpretations can easily arise, causing errors in judgement and leaving the sort of loophole that lawyers and accountants love. David Cameron has recently stated that a simple in or out referendum on membership of the EU gives the voters only two choices. No, it’s only one choice. Help us all!

capitals, two simple commands: ‘Accuracy! Listen to instructions’.
We used to regard this as his little idiosyncrasy, but I have come to realise that the wisdom of this statement, which was never rubbed out, if followed, will save you a mighty lot of trouble throughout life. Lack of accuracy and failure to listen properly will constantly drop you in the soft and smelly.
I received a draft of a legal document a few years back and was mystified by the wording in several places which could be interpreted in different ways. ‘Oh,’ said the solicitor airily, ‘if a problem arises any law office will be able to explain it!’ How appalling. How inaccurate! How condescending. The solicitor will charge for their explanation ...
Time to stop writing now, as it is 3 o’clock p.m. in the afternoon and my train leaves at 15.45 hours. Confused? You should be!

Baptist Youth Quiz Norman Lamb
Sheringham Baptist Youth Group played host to Norman Lamb last month as he visited to discuss issues of global justice. He was responding to an imaginative “bunting” petition that the group had sent him during the summer calling for greater transparency by companies extracting precious resources from African nations.
His visit enabled the young people to quiz him further on this issue, and through drama and a DVD presentation represent three more issues of concern - unfair trade laws, climate change and human trafficking.
Peter Bending, aged 17, quoting from Proverbs 31 about speaking up for the poor and needy, told Mr Lamb, “A love for God and for others is at the heart of the Christian faith and that is why these issues are of such concern to us”.
The group presented him with a pledge, which he willingly signed, asking him to strongly support effective EU rules requiring extractive industries to publish what they pay to developing countries. He also pledged to make sure the UK takes a lead role on the issue of corporate reporting, encouraging other EU countries to follow suit and to make these regulations a first step towards a stronger programme in 2013 to reduce tax dodging in developing countries.
He also agreed to represent the concerns of the young people to David Cameron about climate change and human trafficking.
Youth Pastor Rev Peter Skivington said “I think it’s really important to for young people to engage politically, and to understand that they can use their voice to bring about change for those trapped in poverty and injustice.”
Mr Lamb was very impressed by the young people’s knowledge of the subject and desire to make a positive difference in the world. He invited the group to continue to petition, and to visit Westminster in the New Year to discuss progress. For more information about the activities of the youth group, visit www.sheringhambaptistchurch.co.uk/youth

On behalf of North Norfolk Rotary Club may I thank all our sponsors and supporters for the generosity and help in making our recent Charity Dinner Dance such a success. We are pleased to confirm that we will be donating £7500, being the proceeds from the evening, to the Holt Youth Project, with specific support to the Young Carers. We have pledged to financially support the Young Carer section and with the proceeds of our Golf competition, Morrison’s bucket collection and our Dinner dance we have over achieved our objective for 2012 / 2013 with the surplus going into the main Youth project. We would also like to acknowledge and thank Julie Alford and her marvellous team for all the excellent work they do supporting all the youth and young carers in the community. Kevin Abbs

Awards on the hunt for the heroes of green places 12 Cooperative St, Sheringham Ͳ (01263) 823812 Ͳ info@pcsimple.co.uk
A two month search began this month for the unsung heroes of the environmental movement in the 2013 Octavia Hill Awards.
Organised by the National Trust and Countryfile magazine, the awards were set up in 2012 to celebrate the life and legacy of social reformer, environmental champion and one of the National Trust founders, Octavia Hill.
Nominations for the four categories – natural hero, green space guardian, people’s champion and Love Places will be judged by a panel of experts before being put to a public online poll. Helen Timbrell, Volunteering and Community Involvement Director at the National Trust, said: “Most of the special places that we all love are dependent on the commitment,
dedication and passion of volunteers. These awards are all about recognising that energy and showing that the legacy and spirit of Octavia Hill is alive and well in how we value our green places as a nation.”
The panel of judges for this year’s Awards include Julia Bradbury, Countryfile presenter and winner of a 2012 Octavia Hill Award, Fergus Collins, Editor of Countryfile Magazine, Grahame Hindes, Chief Executive of Octavia Housing, Matt Smith, winner of a 2012 Octavia Hill Award and Helen Timbrell, Volunteering and Community Involvement Director at the National Trust.
In the 2012 Awards more than 170 individuals and organisations were nominated for the
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
There was a good turnout for our Christmas lunch on 4 December which was enjoyed by members, guests, visitors and some widows of former members.
The Chairman, Ken Macnish, was pleased and grateful to announce that our two vacant committee posts are to be filled by volunteers Gordon Hatchett will be Secretary and David Brown will be Programme Secretary.
As we meet on the first Tuesday of the month, we have taken a break in January and will be back to our usual routine on 5 February when Nick Walmsley will give a talk entitled “R101 and the Norfolk connection” after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.
If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.

Octavia Hill Awards. The online poll to decide the winners attracted nearly 7,000 votes.
Fergus Collins, Editor of Countryfile Magazine, commented: “It’s fantastic to be involved with these awards, which recognise the tremendous hard work that so many communities and individuals put in to protect the green spaces that are essential to our wellbeing.”
The closing date for submitting nominations for the Awards is Thursday 28 February. More information about how you can nominate people or organisations can be found at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/octaviaawards and the hashtag #octaviahill will be used on twitter during the Awards.
There will then be an online poll in late March to decide the winners, which will be announced in the June issue of Countryfile Magazine and at a special Awards lunch in London.
Runton Parish History Society
– recalling the 1953 storms
The 31 January 1953 is a date that has remained in the memory of many Norfolk people who live on the coast. On that night a combination of a high Spring tide and a severe north westerly gale caused extensive flooding down the east coast of England. Norfolk was badly affected with some 82 people losing their lives as the North Sea crashed through defences demolishing everything in its path.
Worst affected was the North West of the county where there was large loss of life. Sea Palling was badly hit as well where seven people died. The area between Weybourne and Mundesley came off comparatively lightly with the protection of the high cliffs, but much damage was caused to Cromer Pier.
Sixty years on from that dreadful night Runton Parish History Society will be recalling the events with a presentation by local historian Brian Hedge at East Runton Village Hall on 31 January at 7pm. Admission is £3 including tea and biscuits.

Mammoth Effort
In late December, the Bingo Club at Bernies in East Runton presented the cheques for their year-long fund-raising efforts. The club meets every Sunday and Monday, organised by Anne Harding and Ali Dixon and over the last few years have raised over £14,000 for good causes.
machine, which will allow us to give a thumb prick test on site for quick results. Also it will allow us to do SATS tests on babies to check for lung disease which will save patients a trip to Norwich."
In 2012 they have split the money between Cromer Health Practice and Walsingham Midwives Team (covers North Norfolk). Each received a cheque for £1500.
Dr Pam Ripley commented, "The money will be really helpful. It will be used to buy equipment for the practice that is not funded by the NHS. A cholesterol testing
So you want to be a rock star?
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that it is to work in partnership with three Norfolk arts organisations to provide a diverse and exciting programme of music activities for young people in north Norfolk over the next two years.
The Garage, Community Music East and Creative Arts East have each received funding from national charity Youth Music to help raise the creative aspirations of young people across the district by offering broad opportunities ranging from learning how to create different styles of music to managing and promoting a music event.
Community Music East, with funding from NNDC, is running a series of ‘rock school’ workshops across north Norfolk in 2013. Aimed at 14 – 18 year olds, the workshops have been designed to help young people develop their ‘band’ and performance skills. Activities will include song writing, instrument tuition, stage craft, recording and video making.
The programme will begin in January 2013 and will run until October 2013. Those taking part will be offered the chance to perform at the Young People’s Venue as part of Norwich Sound and Vision’s annual

Debbie McCoy from the midwives, said, "We will use it to purchase new digital weighing scales as well as a Sonicaid heart monitor. Proprietors of Bernies, Keith & Heather Hindson, said that not many people realise that the Bingo Club is free membership and they raise a fantastic amount of money for their charities.
There is expected to be a Quiz & Chip night in February with the Cromer & Sheringham Lions.
"On any given Sunday or Monday there will be at least 30/40 people, sometimes standing room only," commented Ali. "The Christmas Raffle tonight (and earlier) also raised money for the East Anglian Air - in total we will be giving Jamie Edghill £225." festival which will run in October 2013.
John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet member for Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services said, “These projects bring tremendous opportunities to the young people of north Norfolk to engage in music making and to learn new skills.
“The projects will also give young people the chance to consider the creative industry as a career option with activities designed to make the most of their talent, ranging from events management to working as part of a creative team”
If you are interested, have enthusiasm, commitment and enjoy working as part of a team, please contact NNDC’s Arts Officer Brenda Seymour on 01263 516053 for more information.

He spent his working life visiting several National Trust properties valuing houses and their contents (furniture, works of art etc),
cottages and land throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Seventeen years ago he retired and was asked by the Trust if, as a volunteer, he would be prepared to raise funds.
He realised that he could use his interest and expertise buy selling books donated by National Trust members through a shop set up in a small room at Felbrigg. The idea proved popular with members as they saw the funds raised spent on local projects and improvements. This proved so successful that the Trust asked him to start another similar shop at Blickling – but in a bigger room! Many old and some very rare books, dated 1542 and 1548, have been donated. Stamps have recently been added and six ‘Penny Blacks’ have passed through the shops.
Staff and volunteers, some with expert knowledge, sort the donated books and stamps and value them before selling them either in the shops or through auctions.
David says the secret is to have the right book in the right place for the right customer and is proud that his idea has raised nearly one million pounds for the Trust.
After several questions David was thanked by Richard Bottomley for such an interesting and entertaining talk.
An enjoyable Christmas lunch with Ladies and Guests was held at the Pheasant Hotel which is now being refurbished.

Fat transfer for facial and body contouring
A three dimensional face lift or body lift.
A lot of us think about improving our facial or body contours, whether it is to lose some fat from diet and exercise resistant areas or just to look good. Liposuction has come of age and is now performed purely under local anaesthesia. What is even more attractive is that we can now recycle this fat to fill out areas where you have lost volume from!
Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler'. It is an active metabolic tissue and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements which make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement.
What happens with facial ageing? The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.
What happens with ageing of the body? Redistribution of body fat occurs due to changes in metabolism and ageing. Fat is lost from certain body areas and face and accumulates in other areas such as chin, jowls, hips and thighs. These localised deposits of fat can be resistant to diet and exercise.
What is fat transfer? Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of your body to another. A doctor must carefully harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill out or plump up other body part like hands, cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known as fat injections or autologous fat grafting.
How are fat injections different from commercial fillers?
There are many commercial injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm etc that are available for facial rejuvenation. Each of these products has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. An ideal substance would be readily available, inexpensive, longlasting, naturalfeeling, and would not cause adverse reactions. Autologous tissue meets these requirements. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required.
What happens during the procedure? This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The process requires gentle fat removal using lowvacuum limited liposuction and the use of thin, delicate, non-traumatic fine tubes to protect the survival of each harvested living fat cell. The fat cells are then purified and slowly injected through tiny skin incisions into the tissue of the recipient site utilizing a small syringe and cannula. Tiny droplets are placed throughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell will have an adequate blood supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells.
What areas can be treated? The fat injections create a lasting youthful appearance.

Fat transfer to FaceFacial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift. Fat transfer to HandsFat injections to the hands achieve the effect of fuller more contoured hands as those of younger hands. Fat transfer for Breast enhancementFat can be taken from abdomen, flanks or thigh/ hip areas and delicately placed in fatty layer around the breast tissue. It can add around one cup size to the breast volume. Fat transfer to Buttocks (Brazilian Lift) – Liposuction of the waist and flanks combined with fat injection in buttocks. Microfat grafting can add fullness to any part of, or the entire buttocks to create the desired look. The fat is first gently liposuctioned from the abdomen, flanks, hips or thighs and then processed using a sterile decanting technique. The purified fat is then injected into the buttocks with special cannulas.
What will my recovery be like? Patients who have fat transfer experience a quick recovery. Our patients comment that they can go to work the next day. You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hours you may increase your activity as tolerated. Most patients are back to work within 2 to 5 days. Refrain from heavy exercise for a few weeks. Some amount of swelling and bruising can occur. Ice compresses are applied for 24-48 hours to minimize inflammation. Discourage massage and excessive facial animation immediately following fat grafting. These restrictions are to prevent migration of fat away from the desired areas of treatment. Call 0800 0430737 or log on to website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more information or to book a appointment.

Winter wonders, the remedy for January blues? January can make even the most energetic of us feel down in the dumps. The merriment of Christmas is now a distant memory, short days, cold often dreary weather and a lack of money - it’s not surprising we’re all in need of some cheering up.
To help you feel better and brighter than ever this January, the National Trust thinks it may have the answer to easing those winter blues – experiencing nature’s winter wonders…
MAGICAL WINTER SKIES Often remembered for being grey and overcast, we often forget the amazing winter skies full of intense colour, the perfect backdrop to witness huge flocks of birds passing through. From the vast flocks of geese that can be seen in North Norfolk, roosting on the coastal marshes at Blakeney Freshes to the sight and sound of hundreds of widgeon and teal taking to the air at Wicken Fen, this is definitely the time of year to be looking skywards. Don't be in a hurry to rush home either, the amazing winter sunsets are just as breathtaking.
FABULOUS WINTER GARDENS The bleak midwinter may not be the most obvious time to visit gardens, but this time of year brings its own magic. Trees without their leaves reveal new views, statues cast long shadows from the low lying sun – our gardens take on an enchanted appearance. The winter garden at Anglesey Abbey in particular, with some 150 species of plants is an oasis of rich winter colours that lift the spirits. It won’t be long before snowdrops start emerging here and at Oxburgh Hall, Peckover House and Sheringham Park, creating stunning displays that transform the woodland floor.
STUNNING JACK FROST As the temperature drops, staying inside in the warm may seem like the most sensible option. But waking up after a hoarfrost, our landscapes can become scenes from a winter wonderland. Coated in white, icicles and soft frost crystals transform the countryside.it’s as though everything has been covered by a blanket of snow. Ickworth, Wimpole and Sheringham Park in particular lend themselves to scenes from a Christmas card, the perfect spots to bask in nature's majesty with frost-covered topiary, ice-rimmed lakes and breath-taking vistas. WONDERFUL WINTER WALKS Why not wrap up warm and banish those winter blues, on a walk that blows the cobwebs away and sheds the extra pounds you’ve put on over the festive season? When the country is at its most wild and wintry, there are some great walks to enjoy at Flatford and Dunwich Heath, offering some of the best crystal clear views of the year. Wonderfully varied habitats to explore; savour the views and absorb the history and rich variety of trees, bird and animal life along the way. You can always call in for a warming brew at the end of your stroll.
LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW You’re never too old to have fun in the snow and it’s well worth visiting your local National Trust place when there has been a fresh dump of the white stuff. Hatfield Forest and Blickling Hall not only look beautiful, they’re great spaces for families to build the ultimate snowman, make snow angels and igloos of all shapes and sizes. The slopes at Dunstable Downs lend themselves to sledging too. Of course remember to wrap up

warm, take care when having fun in the snow and make plenty of time for hot chocolate breaks.
For more information about where to visit this January visit our website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/eastofengland Many of our places just have a car park fee at this time of year. Check on the website before visiting for opening times and prices. National Trust members free.
Sheringham Muzillac Twinning Association
Forty Members recently enjoyed their annual preChristmas Supper and Quiz at St Peter's Church Hall in Sheringham. They were joined by our Mayor, Doug Smith and his wife.
To give the ladies a rest all the food was expertly prepared by the men and proved a big hit. Due to the success next year's meal is being planned!
If you are interested in joining the Twinning a varied programme will be available in our Newsletter due to be circulated to members before Christmas and also there is a website and blog. The next visit to Muzillac in Brittany is planned for the end of August 2013. For further information please contact the Secretary, Mary Penning on 01263 514353 or visit www.sheringham-muzillac.co.uk

New statistics confirm ambulance response times are worsening – North Norfolk Labour Party
Less than half of the urgent emergency calls to the ambulance service last year in north Norfolk were answered within a target of eight minutes, and the percentage of ambulance staff reaching patients within nineteen minutes in 2012 dropped from 80.6% to 72.4%. Although the overall targets are set by government for the whole of the region, the data seen by North Norfolk Labour Party confirms in north Norfolk a decline in response times, and supports concerns about reducing the number of double-staffed ambulances in the district.
The data from the ambulance trust shows that although there were fewer life-threatening emergency calls in 2012 (4380 in 2012 compared to 4937 in 2011) the ambulance service has seen more delays in the time it takes for first responders, rapid response vehicles, or ambulances to reach patients based
on those 'A8' and 'A19' targets. The number of serious, but not life-threatening, calls in north Norfolk rose to 10,288 (up from 9862 in 2011). Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “These figures raise further doubts
North Norfolk Labour Party praised by Ed Miliband for campaign efforts
Two shadow ministers joined North Norfolk Labour Party at their annual Christmas dinner, when local members also received praise for a local ambulance campaign from the party leader Ed Miliband.
Rachel Reeves, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, told party members about the state of the economy and the threat that the country may end up in a triple-dip recession next year. Meanwhile Luton MP Gavin Shuker, Shadow Minister for Water and Waste, spoke of the challenges ahead for the Labour Party.
North Norfolk Labour Party was congratulated for their campaigning efforts and the partial u-turn over ambulance cuts in north Norfolk. Gavin Shuker MP said that the Act on Ambulances campaign was “spoken about in Westminster with a sense of pride by those not even in the region”.
Ed Miliband also sent a personal message to the party: ”I want to pay tribute to every single one of you involved in North Norfolk Labour.” He added: “I also want to recognise the fantastic work you are doing with the Act on Ambulances campaign. You have gathered signatures face to face and online, and won some great coverage for the cause. Your merit award for the campaign was richly deserved, and you are showing what a great campaign force you can be”.
The shadow ministers were thanked for their visit with a piece of Cromer – silver crab napkin holders.

about the government’s programme of savings which is taking £50m from the ambulance service over the next five years and has seen the number of double-staffed ambulances in the county reduced. With fewer emergency ‘red’ calls being met within the eight minute and 19 minute targets, and an increase in the number of green calls in north Norfolk, there is a clear need for more ambulances – not less – in our district.
In 2013 we will continue to press local MPs who support cuts in the ambulance service to rethink their stance, and we want to see less talk and more action at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where there needs to be vast improvements in ambulance turnaround times.”
500 ambulance hours lost at the Norfolk & Norwich
Ambulances wasted more than 500 hours in October last year waiting to hand over patients at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The total is nearly three times as high as the second worst hospital, Addenbrookes in Cambridge, which lost 185 hours.
The October figure of 537 hours is a 57% increase since July. The figures were obtained by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb. Mr Lamb has persistently highlighted the problem of ambulances ‘stacking’ at A&E, exacerbating the problem of slow response times in the county. Commenting, Mr Lamb said “These figures show the impact delays handing patients over are having on our ambulance service. It is the equivalent to having an ambulance out of action for 22 whole days in a single month. The consequences of that are obvious. Part of the problem is that the hospital is constantly under pressure. The hospital was built using the widely discredited Private Finance Initiative and with limited bed numbers. This means its always virtually full which makes it difficult to move patients into the main hospital from A and E. I have been saying for some time now that a key factor in poor response times in North Norfolk is handover delays at the Norfolk and Norwich. These figures absolutely support that. I am pleased that at the meeting I had last week with key people in the NHS in Norfolk, there was a clear recognition that the problem must be resolved. Cracking this issue is absolutely critical to improving the service here in Norfolk.”

Medals for veterans of the Arctic Convoy
It was announced by the Prime Minister at the end of last year that veterans of two Second World War campaigns will receive new medals, following a campaign by veterans’ groups. Veterans of the Arctic Convoy will be recognised with an Arctic Convoy Star medal, while the aircrew of Bomber Command will be awarded a Bomber Command clasp. The news follows a review by Sir John Holmes into the rules and principles governing the award of military campaign medals. The Coalition Agreement included a commitment to review the rules surrounding the award of military campaign medals, as part of work to strengthen the military covenant. Liberal Democrat support for the National Defence Medal campaign led to the scope of the review being widened and Sir John Holmes, a former UK ambassador, being appointed to lead it. A previous review conducted under the last Government was widely criticised for not consulting with outside groups. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I raised this with the minister on behalf of the many constituents who contacted me to voice their support for recognition for the veterans of the Arctic Convoy. I am thrilled that the Prime Minister has seen the importance of this issue and particularly of resolving it swiftly. The Liberal Democrats in Government have been working on the medal review for over a year now to get it as robust, as fair and as transparent as possible so that the extraordinary service of our veterans is recognised, no matter how long ago their bravery was displayed. In their thirteen years of government, Labour refused to look at specific medal campaigns. I’m proud that the Coalition is putting that right.
