Dear Margaret

Dear Margaret

Whilst I do not wish to alarm anyone, I want to warn readers of a scam currently targeting the area.

We have knowledge of two incidents where elderly individuals have been targeted by phone, by a call centre in which the caller states that they have reason to believe that there is a problem with their internet or email service. The caller then states that their "firm" can fix the problem on their computer for a fee and asks for bank details and their internet access codes.

These people are convincing and very persistent. As many people, especially of an older age group, are not always confident with new technology this request can seem compelling; especially when they are in their own home and feeling safe and off guard.

It is extremely unlikely that any reputable email/ internet service provider would ever cold call a customer in this way and clearly if you had a problem with your email or Internet service it would be more likely that you would bring it to your service provider's attention than the other way around.

If this happens we would strongly suggest that you put the phone down, without giving any details then refer the matter to Norfolk Police. If you have given details and have been targeted in this way then I would suggest that you contact Norfolk Police for advice as to what to do next. J Glen

It remains ironic how our MPs in Westminster are quick to support cuts, but when services are at risk in their backyard they are quick to show their concern, like they live two separate lifestyles. The latest story is the government cuts threatening the Norfolk Green Coasthopper which has been at risk after a fall in funding which led to a visit from Transport Minister Norman Baker who posed gleefully on a bus with our local MP. While I am pleased this route has been given the recognition it deserves, the ministers should also have visited nearby towns and villages in north Norfolk where there are many rural bus routes that have been axed. The results are leaving our elderly isolated, and workers having to source other modes of transport to carry on in employment.

These cuts across the county will continue to hit our rural areas the hardest and threaten the lifeblood of many of our most thriving tourist hotspots. Jono Read Holt

A Choral Feast at St Peter’s Sheringham

On Saturday 16 March at 7.30pm St Peter’s Church Sheringham will welcome Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society directed by Nathan Waring for their Spring Concert. The choir, which this year celebrates its 80th Anniversary, will perform Karl Jenkins Requiem which was composed by the Welsh musical wizard just a few years ago. Jenkins is now reputed to be the most performed living British composer.

Alongside this will be a performance of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams written some 100 years earlier. Ralph Vaughan Williams is arguably the greatest composer Britain has seen since the days of Henry Purcell. He composed music notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. Five Mystical Songs is a setting of four poems by George Herbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. The baritone soloist will be Jamie Wright, a choral scholar at York Minster. The concert will also include a short organ recital by Lawrence Tao, organist at Gresham’s School. He will play Bach’s Trio, Prelude and Fugue in C Major BWV 545. Tickets £10 (£12 on the door) from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office (01263 822347) and K Hardware, Cromer. Under 18s go free. For further details visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk

Dear Grumpy Old Man

As a self confessed inveterate pedant when it comes to abuse/misuse of our English language, I wholeheartedly share your irritation. ‘Reverse backwards’, ‘serious crisis’,’ restarted again’, ‘future ahead’ – for me this is akin to the scratching of fingernails down a blackboard – sorry, chalkboard. Then there’s what I call lazy English. The snooker commentator who says ‘he’s hit it perfect’ and ‘he did that previous’ - is it really too much to put ‘–ly’ on the end in each case? Equally irritating are the ‘in’ words and expressions – ‘basically’ and ‘at the end of the day’ are now well-established. More recently we don’t seem to have problems any more but we have issues instead (a problem is not an issue and an issue is not a problem!) ‘How do you solve an issue like Maria?’ No, I don’t think so! ‘To be frank’, ‘to be truthful’ and ‘to be honest’ have all been replaced with ‘to be fair’ even when it is inappropriate. When asking how someone is, the response is now usually ‘I’m good’ – no, I am asking about your health and well being not your behaviour or morals! Then there’s MP speak – their ‘in’ word seems to be ‘clear’ for example ‘I want to make it absolutely clear’ or ‘I couldn’t be more clear’. Returning to sports commentary, it seems that some commentators are incapable of communicating to their listeners anything of any substance or meaning. For example, during the recent world bowls tournament one player/commentator said ‘The fewer bad bowls that you play means that you have a greater chance of winning’ and one football manager commented ‘If we had scored, it would have been a different result’. If you have nothing to say then for pity’s sake say nothing. Then there’s the pseudo Afro Caribbean/West Indian/cockney accent where every sentence is punctuated with ‘like’, ‘innit’ (even when it doesn’t follow a question) and ‘know what I mean?’ So basically, at the end of the day and to be fair, I want like to make it absolutely clear that this is the end of my rant as my wife, who is slightly pregnant and is expecting a pair of twins, needs me to help innit as she has an issue with the washing machine, know what I mean? If you or someone you know has to go into care, what will happen to your home? by Christina Attridge, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

Of course, the answer to this question depends upon the circumstances eg. ownership and occupation etc.

iii)Where the same is a former partner who is either divorced or estranged from the resident but who is a lone parent.

Here I deal only with the rules relating to what is known as the ‘disregard’.

The value of a resident’s former home will be disregarded in the following circumstances:-

i) Where the same is occupied by a partner, husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner except where the resident is estranged or divorced from them.

ii) Where the same is occupied by a relative who is aged 60 or over or a younger relative who is ‘incapacitated’. ‘Relatives’ include parents, parents-in-law, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, spouse or unmarried partner of the foregoing and also including adoptive parents and adoptive children. ‘Incapacitated’ refers to a person in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or anyone not in receipt of the above but whose incapacity is equivalent to that required for one of the above.

Where hair care is still an art

iv) Where the same is occupied by a child under 16 whom the resident is liable to maintain ie. is a dependant.

The value of the home must also be disregarded if the stay in residential care is temporary and the resident intends to return home or the resident is taking steps to sell it to find something more appropriate to return to.

The Local Authority also has a ‘discretionary’ power to disregard the value of the property where it is the home of someone else not included on the above list and may be exercised where:• The home is the sole residence of someone who has given up their own home to care for the resident, or

• Where someone is an elderly companion of the resident, particularly if they have given up their own home.

The Local Authority will also disregard the value of a resident’s former home for the first 12 weeks from the date of the resident’s admission into permanent care.

If that resident has entered the care home on a temporary basis and then decides to stay permanently the 12 week disregard runs from the date when the stay becomes permanent.

We support all local festivals such as COAST and Sheringham Carnival, run free art workshops for children and make the town come alive by painting the clock tower. We have run the Christmas Lights switch on for three years, and contribute to the town’s decorations during the 1940’s weekend. The group also support local players by making scenery for productions, and we helped create the controversial Cromer Christmas tree. To keep Open Door sustainable we need your support, and a lot giving a little goes a long way. So join us for an evening of puzzling fun and keep Open Door alive. Norman Lamb MP supports Post Office DVLA win

The Post Office will continue to offer accessible driving licence and tax services to millions of customers in the UK, including in North Norfolk. Local MP Norman Lamb attended an event in Parliament last month to show his support for the win by signing a dedicated congratulations board.

Commenting, Norman Lamb, former Postal Services Minister, said “The Post Office is a vital part of communities in North Norfolk and has long provided a platform for essential and every day government services. I was thrilled when it was announced that the Post Office bid has been successful. I am dedicated to ensuing local residents can easily access services they need and think this is another step in reaching that goal. When I was Postal Services Minister I kept a close eye on the Post Office’s work on winning the contract. This is the tenth success in a row for Post Office Limited. It is also great news that we have the lowest member of Post Office closures for 25 years.”

Martin Moran, Commercial Director at the Post Office said “We are delighted to have the support of Norman Lamb MP. The Post Office has a strong track record in successfully delivering essential government services. Winning the DVLA contract again is testimony to the quality of our staff and subpostmasters, whose longstanding commitment to serving local communities contributed greatly to this success.”

The Post Office secured the seven year Framework Agreement with Department of Transport in November 2012.

Office has made a commitment to no more branch closure programmes. It provides around 170 different services and products spanning financial services including savings, insurance, loans, mortgages and credit cards. Post Office also offers Government services; telephony; foreign currency; travel insurance and mail services.

Norman Lamb signing the board It confirms that the Post Office will continue to deliver DVLA services from spring 2013, including:

It serves around 20 million customers a week and half of all small businesses. More than 99 % of people live within three miles of a Post Office branch. For many rural communities the Post Office is the only retail outlet. Post Offices remain highly valued and trusted and are the focal point for many communities. For more information, visit www.postoffice.co.uk

• Driving Licence photocard renewal • Motor Vehicle Licence Issue • Statutory off road notices (SORN) • Duplicate Vehicle Licence. Many other driver transactions and motor vehicles services will also be offered through Post Office branches as a result of the agreement meaning customers will be able to access a wide range of DVLA services under one roof.

The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, has an unrivalled national network of over 11,500 branches across the UK, more than all the high street banks combined, and sits at the heart of many communities across the country. The Post

I would like to give a huge vote of sincere thanks to all local businesses and individuals who have responded so generously to our appeal for sponsorship of Sheringham Carnival 2013. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

Carnival dates for this year are Saturday August 3rd to Sunday August 11th and the theme for this year is “Anything Goes”.

We have listened to the opinions of local businesses, residents and holiday makers and there are some key changes to carnival week this year – the biggest change will be the Parade which is returning to the Wednesday evening position (August 7th). We will also be bringing back the Torchlight Procession – leading to the firework display on Sunday August 11th. As a result of Parade Day changes, the Street Races will be moved to Tuesday night. After the sold-out success of the last Masquerade Ball last year we will be holding another Ball this year on Saturday 7th September. The Raft Race (date to be confirmed) is expected to be even more brilliant than last year! Please note that the date for the Ball has recently changed. We will be searching for a Carnival Queen 2013 in the not too distant future; if you are interested, or know anyone who might be interested, we would love to hear from you - contact Della McClean: dellamcclean@hotmail.com

Finally, a plea, if anyone would like to help with the carnival please get in touch with me at stuart.mcclean1@yahoo.co.uk Stuart McClean - Carnival Chairman Sheringham Independent 361 February16th 2013

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

With the daylight hours increasing and hopefully the weather getting warmer, Spring is once again in the air for the un-neutered members of the cat population. Although most people are aware that it is important to get their female cats neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies, there are those that believe it is not so important to neuter their tom cats. Unfortunately this can lead to heartbreak when the cat goes missing in search of a member of the opposite sex. In the past week Stephanie has had phone calls from two people whose cat (both under a year old) had gone missing. Although both these cats had operations booked, their hormones kicked in before the appointed day. A male cat will travel a long distance to find a receptive female and there are no guarantees he will be able to find his way home afterwards. These cats very often end up coming into our care several months later with no indication as to where they came from and sadly the worse for wear. There are also the added dangers of crossing busy roads where they could be hit by a car and injured, or worse. Un-neutered tom cats are also more likely to contact FIV or FELV should they get into a fight with another tom that has been infected with either of these nasty conditions.

Having your cat neutered is important and we will always offer vouchers to people on low incomes or benefits to help with the cost. Please pick up the phone and ring our neutering line if you think you are eligible as it could save a call to Stephanie to report your cat is missing.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

A"Tail" of Wonder

I wonder why I am sitting here! I wonder why people look at me and walk by! I wonder why I have been here so long! I wonder if I have done anything wrong!

All these thoughts and more must be going through the head of a lovely little greyhound called Dana. She has just had her 5th birthday and is a really sweet and loving girl. She has been really well behaved when promoting Homefinders at shows and on walks. Her black coat with little white flecks all over it stands out and she will make a lovely, lovely pet for someone.

So why I wonder has she been sitting in a kennel for four months watching others around her go to new homes. Dana will make a loving, loyal companion as she adores being fussed and cuddled.

If you think you could give Dana a loving home and would like to meet her, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797 or drop in at our kennels at 51 Cromer Road (A140), Hainford (between Aylsham and Norwich). We are now open every day from 10am to 2pm.

February Offer Safe ‘chips’ for Dogs

The ‘Control of Dogs Act 1992’ states that: every dog shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner attached to it; this means it is a legal requirement for your pet to be identified when out in public places. Unfortunately collars often come off or can be removed; the only permanent form of identification for your pet is by placing an ID chip into the skin of the ‘scruff’ between the shoulder blades. This simple procedure can be carried out by our vets without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. Puppies are normally ‘chipped’ at second vaccination at 10 weeks old. We are offering these id chips at the special price of £15.00 (usually £25.00) for February only. To book an appointment please call 01263 822293. Please bring this coupon with you to claim your discount.

Cllr. Oliver

He succeeds Cllr. FitzPatrick, who was appointed Leader of the Council in December. It was also announced that Russell Wright would be joining the NNDC Cabinet.

Educated in Holt and living in Aylmerton, the new Deputy Leader was elected as Ward Member for Sheringham South in the District Council elections in May 2011. At 22, he is NNDC’s youngest member, the 2011 council elections coinciding with his final exams at Imperial College, London, from where he successfully graduated with a degree in physics. He is currently studying for a law degree and is a keen racket sports player, representing Cromer in squash, table tennis and tennis. He will be a candidate for the Sheringham division in the county council elections in May.

Commenting, Cllr. Oliver said, “I have been actively involved in politics for over five years and am interested in all areas of local government. North Norfolk is a wonderful place but we know that as a

council we can help our communities to make it even better. I am particularly keen to show that young people can make a real difference and I hope that my appointment will encourage more young people to get actively involved in their local communities.”

Cllr. Fitzpatrick

Russell Wright, 53, Member for the Astley Ward, which is centred on Melton Constable, and who runs a well-known design and build landscaping company, will join the six existing members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet, Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver (Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, Trevor Ivory, John Lee and Wyndham Northam. Cllr. Wright was a member of NNDC 1991-1995, he was re-elected in 2011 and is currently also a member of Norfolk County Council.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said, “I am delighted to announce these two new appointments. Cllr. Wright will bring to the Cabinet many years of experience at both District and County authority level. He has solid business experience and this will be of real benefit in our work to help the economy in these challenging times. Cllr. Oliver has proven himself to be very able in his time on Cabinet and I am looking forward to working further with him in the coming months. I believe both these appointments will be welcome news.”

Labour select Cromer publisher Jen Emery as by-election candidate North Norfolk Labour Party has selected Cromer publisher and business woman Jen Emery as their candidate for the district council by-election taking place in the town on 21 February.

Mrs Emery runs the independent publisher Salt Publishing in the town, alongside her husband Chris, and the company narrowly missed out on winning the prestigious Man Booker Prize for literature in 2012.

She is no stranger to local politics having campaigned to save the jobs at the iconic Cromer Crab Factory, and fought against the district council’s decision to increase parking fees in the tourist town. More recently she has passionately petitioned against the decision to cuts the town’s ambulance fleet through Labour’s Act on Ambulances campaign. This led to a partial u-turn from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, but concerns about cuts and response times still remain an important issue in the town.

Jen lives in Cromer with her three children attending local schools. Before creating the publishing firm she spent twenty years working in the NHS and working to help some of society’s most vulnerable people.

On her selection Jen told North Norfolk Labour Party members: “I am delighted to have been selected as the Labour candidate for the Cromer by-election.

I live and work in the town and can think of no better place to be with my family.

As a business owner I understand the pressures faced by small businesses in the town, and the difficulties hard-working families face due to cuts and the rising cost of living.

I have had many years of experience working in the NHS which is one of the reasons I threw myself into the Act on Ambulances campaign when it was announced our fleet was to be reduced while response times are poor.”

More information can be found about Jen Emery at www.jenemery.co.uk

During the last few weeks St Peter's Church, (1897) has been transformed inside.

Under the leadership of church warden, David Rivett and the long term planning of the vicar, Revd. Christian Heycocks, the old wooden chairs have been replaced. These were probably as old as the church, and many were wood-wormed.

Money became available through a generous gift, the Harrison legacy, so a PCC decision could be taken, not only to buy comfortable new chairs but to renovate the wooden flooring as well. A team from the congregation removed the old chairs and hours of sanding and staining were undertaken professionally. A vast open space was created before the new furniture arrived. It is unlikely that anyone living will have seen the empty church before.

Do look in to see the work that has been done. The church staff, PCC and congregation are all delighted.

Grumpy Old Man - Retail Therapy the day hangs in the balance …

A couple of shopping issues this month, the first up being of particular interest to men.

Men shop differently to women. If we need to purchase specific items we seek out sources and buy with the least possible fuss. Women enjoy shopping, apart from the weekly grind around the supermarket shelves, they love to browse and nowhere more than in fashion stores. If their husbands or partners accompany them, which when retired is pretty frequent, the men are in for a tough time.

From long experience I know that if I exhibit the slightest sign of disinterest or restlessness, a palpable tension manifests itself between us. Hanging around aimlessly soon makes my legs ache. Acres of space crammed with clothes and displays to hold female interest, but nowhere to sit down. In winter, wrapped in cumbersome outdoor clothing in a very warm store, adds to my discomfort. Preoccupied with my petty miseries it is disconcerting when my nearest and dearest suddenly confronts me with the question ‘What do you think of this?’

Caught unaware I have no idea whether I am expected to approve or disapprove, and domestic harmony for the remainder of

I am sure that being expected to quote these insincerities over and over ad nauseam during their shift at work seriously inhibits staff from interacting naturally with customers. Some of us like a bit of banter, others do not. Most of us dislike overfamiliarity, appreciate politeness and a natural smile and cannot bear indifference from staff, which is inexcusably rude. Are the retail gurus aiming to train the humanity out of their staff to a point where we will be unable to distinguish between them and the automated self service tills (which order us about like Daleks) in the hope that we will get used to dealing just with machines and screens? I think they may be. What a dreadful prospect. Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ is becoming a reality, with a sheep-like proletariat kept amused and controlled by a small, powerful elite.

When will the retail trade wake up and realise that if shops provide sufficient handy seating for men in their fashion departments, preferably with a few newspapers to peruse, everyone will be happier. Women will be able to relax and take their time knowing that the old man is comfortable instead of irritable and that he will be more likely to contentedly nod approval at a purchase.

The second issue which raises my hackles and mars the shopping experience is the way large organisations coach their staff to converse with customers in a pre-determined and formulaic manner which is so insincere that silence is preferable. A few examples: • ‘How are you today?’ • ‘Have you finished all your shopping today?’ • ‘Did you find everything you were looking for?’ • ‘Enjoy the rest of your day’ and so on. We are all peppered with these trite phrases to which we are expected to respond in an equally automatic way, knowing full well neither party gives a toss for either question or the answer. Conventional moves keep our irritation in check.

Before you dismiss me as a miserable old nutter, just think how browsing in shops, a social activity, is rapidly being replaced by browsing the internet, a solitary activity, with the huge social consequences already apparent.

British railways’ biggest engines come together at Poppy Line Steam Gala

After the second World War the newly-nationalised British Railways was faced with the need to replace hundreds of worn-out steam engines. Chief engineer Robin Riddles designed a range of different standard types, from giant express engines to more humble freight movers. And the Poppy Line is celebrating the finest of these in a special Steam Gala which runs Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March, and Saturday/Sunday 16th and 17th March.

Interest will be focused on two crack engines, “Britannia” and “Oliver Cromwell”.

Both played a big role in restoring the UK’s express routes, and “Oliver Cromwell” hauled the fast trains from Norwich to London. The Poppy Line Gala will be the first time these two iconic engines have been seen together in preservation. Contrasting with them will be the giant freight counterpart, the 140-ton “Black Prince”, which Riddles built to handle heavy iron ore trains from the ports to the steelworks. Three other engines from the fertile drawing board of Robin Riddles will also be running, including one – no. 76084 – which has just been restored, and which will become a regular on the Poppy Line. The British Railways Standards Gala is a first for the heritage railway movement. General Manager Trevor Eady says: “It’s taken a couple of years to organise this event, and it should get our 2013 season off to a rousing start!” Because of the cost of bringing in these giant engines, the railway has had to increase prices for the event – but there’s a 15% discount on all tickets booked in advance before March 1st (call 01263 820 800 or go to www.nnrailway.co.uk). Rover tickets (which are valid all day on all trains) are £21 adult, £20 senior citizen and £13 child 5 – 15. Under 5s are free, and a family Rover (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) is £54. 2- and 3-day Rover tickets are also available at discounted prices. There will be intensive steam services every day of the Gala.

No.70013 “Oliver Cromwell”, once in charge of the fastest trains from Norwich to London.

Healthy 2012 Visitor Numbers For The Poppy Line

Despite one of the wettest summers ever recorded in Britain, despite the rival attractions of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, and despite the difficult economic situation, over 148,000 passengers travelled on the Poppy Line in 2012. That’s just 1.5% down on the record number of the previous year.

Key to this sparkling performance were the railway’s special events. The programme included the tribute to the Ealing comedy “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!” in June, the Beer Festival in July, the Grand Steam Gala at the end of August and the re-enactment ’40s Weekend in September (which itself drew record crowds). “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!”

helped to increase June visitors by 2,500 (17%) over the previous June. General Manager Trevor Eady commented “We certainly noticed a drop in passengers over the Olympics – probably a combination of the Games and the dreadful weather – but the full-year performance reflects great credit on our volunteers and staff.”

Thai King Prawn Green Curry with Sticky Jasmine Rice and Asian Style Vegetables This is a fantastic Thai curry passed down to me from a previous head chef who had lots of experience with Asian foods, and it’s stayed with me ever since. It’s the perfect time of year for curries generally, and this one is a real winter warmer – in fact one of the owners here calls it ‘The Suffolk’ because it’s slightly thicker than normal… (!)

from Head Chef at The Grove, Gary Parrett

As we keep one eye on a couple of big occasions coming up here at the Grove – Mother’s Day and Easter – we’re continuing to run our over 50s lunchtime special – two courses plus coffee off the specials board for just £10 – so do pop in and see us Wednesday through to Saturday. And don’t forget our amazing Sunday lunch too!

The delicate blend of flavours give my Thai King Prawn Green Curry a starring role on our upcoming Valentines menu – details at eatatthegrovecromer.co.uk.

Ingredients: 50g Thai green curry paste or more for extra heat* 4 tins of full fat coconut milk 15g lemon grass 15g finely sliced fresh ginger 1 lemon (zest and juice) 2 limes (zest and juice)

50g fresh coriander 3 pulped cloves of garlic 100g of peeled raw tiger prawns (half and remove the tube through the body) 50g sliced Chinese cabbage, either from the supermarket, or ask Andrew or Lisa at the Cromer Farm and Health Shop ½ finely sliced red onion 2 peeled and finely sliced carrots 1 finely sliced courgette halved Jasmine rice as you require

*Thai green curry paste - try to use mae ploy, but if that’s not available Blue Dragon is also ok – just double the weight as it’s not as strong. Alternatively there’s a good recipe online that I’ve used before: www.kitchenbutterfly.com/ how-to/make-thai-green-curry-paste/ - all the ingredients can be found at the Cromer Farm and Health shop on Tucker Street.

Method: 1. Empty the contents of the coconut milk into a saucepan and gently simmer. 2. Into this add your sliced ginger, chopped lemongrass, citrus zest and juice, garlic and your curry paste. Reduce the mixture until it has thickened slightly, remove from the

That’s it, serve how you wish – though it’s always nice with some wedges of lime and chopped corriander.

From Sheringham to the Caribbean

Sheringham Singers’ very own Val Crowe has recently returned from a three week Fred Olsen Caribbean Cruise where she had the privilege of being the cruise ship's choir conductor.

Val told The Sheringham Independent ‘This has been a new experience for me, having never been on a cruise before. After practising one hour most days, we were asked to present a Christmas concert to the passengers and we got the audience singing and acting to `The Twelve Days of Christmas' as well as well-known carols and other popular Christmas songs. Near the end of the cruise, we presented another concert in the theatre. The audience sang along with a number of old tyme songs and choruses accompanied on the accordion. They also joined in with the choir with choruses such as `Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud' and `You are my Sunshine'. A good time was had by all and on the last night of the cruise, the entertainment director praised the choir in front of a very large audience for the enjoyment they had given to their audiences’.

heat and strain back into the saucepan. 3. In a separate pan boil the rice until the water has disappeared, then drain - the texture should be fluffy and sticky. 4. Place the curry sauce on a medium to low heat and add your vegetables; these need to be crunchy in texture so only a few minutes cooking in the sauce is needed. 5. Once your vegetables are done add your halved peeled prawns and chopped coriander. The prawns will only need a about a minute as they will be delicate after halving.

More money for cycling in Norfolk Norfolk is eligible for more money to improve cycling infrastructure, the Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Norman Baker has announced.

Norwich will be able to bid for a share of the £30m available to improve infrastructure so that more people have the confidence to take up cycling. The Broads national park, in partnership with local councils, will also be able to apply for a share of a separate £12m fund to improve conditions for cyclists.

Meanwhile, Norwich station is due to get secure, sheltered bike storage with 242 new spaces as part of a £15m boost to the Community Linking Places Fund aimed at improving cycle-rail integration.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “Cycling in the Broads is a real pleasure and popular with visitors to the area. By encouraging more people to get on their bikes, we can help strengthen our local economy. That’s why I will be working hard

18

to secure a slice of the money so we get our fair share and get those improvements in as quickly as possible. I often cycle in Norfolk and, while we’ve seen improvements in the past, more work is much needed. This additional money comes at the right time.”

Commenting, Norwich South MP Simon

Wright said "I’ve had very positive discussions with Norman Baker and Greater Anglia about providing more cycling facilities at Norwich station, and I’m delighted that Norwich is getting the vital infrastructure it needs. Making our streets safer and encouraging sustainable transport is so important. This investment is welcome news for cyclists wishing to use the train.”

Commenting further, Norman Baker said “Cycling is a great way to get around. Not only is it good for the environment and the economy, but evidence shows that with people who cycle living longer than those who do not it is also great for your health. The country’s success at the Olympics and in the Tour de France has brought cycling right into the public’s imagination and there is a huge appetite for better cycling provisions. This announcement capitalises on that and adds to the significant investment that we have already made to allow more people to get on their bikes.”

Sheringham & District Coffee Mornings

Our talk on 31 January was by Ivan Hardy from the East Coast Truckers. This charity helps disabled and disadvantaged children by taking them on trips to the cinema and theatre and their biggest, and most famous, trip is when 80 trucks go in convoy to Pleasurewood Hills and then on to Great Yarmouth where they parade along the seafront. We were shown a film of one of their trips and the happiness and excitement on the faces of the children was very touching. It is a really worthwhile charity and deserves to be better known.

Our next talk will be given by Graham Lubbock of the National Trust, who is in charge of Blakeney Point. He will tell us something of its history and also tell us about the Trust's plans for its future.

The talk will be on Thursday, 28 February at St. John Hall, Wyndham Street at 10.15am for 10.30. Entrance is £2 which includes tea or coffee and homemade cakes. You do not have to be a member of the Society. Everyone is very welcome.

SoS Supper Success

The annual SoS supper of the Sheringham Branch RNLI held in Upper Sheringham Village Hall was another great success. Despite the freezing weather many members, friends and supporters turned out and enjoyed a great evening of food, fun and music. Three piece folk band Red Oktober delighted the audience with their skilled and popular music and front man Paul Marriott had the audience shaking with laughter with his jokes, many aimed at people in the audience. Local MP Norman Lamb took a few well-meaning jibes in good heart, not least that he was having an evening off from research for his government post… watching Casualty.

The event and food was organised by Anne Little and a great team of supporters. Branch treasurer Mick Holford hosted the evening. Two fine pictures, one by Brian Lewis and the other by former Sheringham and Cromer lifeboat mechanic Paul Wegg, were sold by silent auction before Chairman Phil Hawes conducted business in a fiercely contested auction for the privilege of tea for two on the terrace of the House of Commons. The evening came to a close with rousing choruses of the folk anthem, ‘All around my Hat’ before fittingly ending with a lively version of ‘What Shall We Do with the Drunker Sailor’ led, of course, by the mighty Red Oktober.

All agreed it was a fantastic community event and the evening raised a magnificent £894.07 for the RNLI. Thank you to all who gave so generously.

Crime figures show Norfolk stays ‘on top of its game’ Latest Home Office statistics reveal that crime across Norfolk fell year on year by 8 percent.

The report from the Home Office for the year ending September 2012 shows there were 3,455 less crimes during the period under comparison.*

With a crime rate of 46 crimes per 1000 population, this is well below the English national average of 68 crimes per 1000 and makes Norfolk the joint safest county in England.**

Among the highlights include burglary which reduced by 19%, compared to an 8% national reduction. Burglary from a dwelling was down by 22% across the county and there was a drop of 16% for burglary other than a dwelling. Norfolk has the joint lowest rate of burglaries in England *** with only 4 offences per 1000 population.

Criminal damage reduced by 19% to 7,617 offences, compared to a national reduction of 13%, while robbery reduced by 19% to 189 offences. The year to date from 1 April 2012 to 30 November 2012 shows a robbery reduction of 34.1%.

Vehicle crime has reduced by 17% to 2,766 offences compared to a national average of 8%.

All Home Office categories saw reductions in the number of offences in 2011/12 compared to the previous year with the exceptions in violence against the person, drug offences and fraud.

WHITE HORSE Overstrand

Violence against the person year on year increased by 3% - a rise of 277 offences. Much of this increase is in the category of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress and represents an increase in the activity by police to tackle violent crime and identify offenders.

Drug offences increased by 9% - a rise of 191 offences. This is classed as a ‘preventative crime’ by the force.Consequently, this rise can again be put down to police action to tackle and disrupt criminal activity to combat drug crime. Fraud and forgery increased by 11% to 768 offences. This category of crime is one of those currently ‘under-reported’ in Norfolk.

Deputy Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: “The Constabulary can rightly feel very proud of these results, alot of hard work has taken place to ensure the Constabulary continues to perform exceptionally well. The county remains a very safe place to live and with our partner agencies, we will continue to deliver a high quality service.”

Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner Stephen Bett said: “Whilst the figures are somewhat historic, I am pleased to yet again welcome a positive performance by Norfolk Constabulary. I congratulate the Chief Constable and all police personnel on their contribution to making Norfolk a safe county. The challenge for me, is funding them to sufficient a level to maintain that.” * Comparing 2010/11 to 2011/12 (1 October to 30 September) a reduction of 42,697 crimes to 39,242 ** The same as North Yorkshire *** The same as Cumbria

Henry Blogg Museum calls for straw donkey The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is searching for a straw donkey, and other special souvenirs, to feature in an exciting new exhibition.

On Saturday 23 February members of the public are invited to visit the museum bringing with them a souvenir that holds a memory.

Chosen souvenirs will then have the chance to be displayed in a forthcoming exhibition. Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick!: A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29 March to the 14 April 2013 at the museum. Looking at the history of souvenirs, including items salvaged from shipwrecks and RNLI memorabilia, the exhibition will explore what makes objects special to us. People have always collected keepsakes as reminders of special events, holidays, moments in history, places or people and this will be reflected upon within the display.

The exhibition will feature items from the

museum's own collection including an emotive tile salvaged from the Sepoy. This memento commemorates Henry Blogg's rescue of the two crew members from the barge in December 1933. Hand painted to depict the scene the tile shows a desire to remember and commemorate the event.

Also on display will be a photograph of three elegant Edwardian women riding donkeys at Lowestoft. This souvenir shows a more light-hearted recording of events. Taken exactly 100 years ago, the image was preserved in a photograph album belonging to Joyce Taylor, which was later donated to the Henry Blogg Museum by her son and also includes images of Cromer lifeboats.

The museum is hoping that visitors will bring a range of souvenirs on the 23 February ranging photos and memorabilia for us to record and help to identify faces and events from our community archive. This month there will be a talk on “Some other Poppyland 5 Old Pictures”. Drop in, admission free.

Events at Cromer Museum Children’s Art Workshop Victorian Decoupage

Thursday 21 February 10.30am-12.30pm & 1pm-3pm Try this Victorian hobbycraft and make your own holiday scrapbook to take home with you. Drop in, admission free. Under 8s must be accompanied by an adult

from Mexican sombreros to RNLI memorabilia and, of course, the elusive straw donkey. Whatever the souvenir this is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see their own objects on display and tell their stories.

Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘I hope that many interesting souvenirs are shown on the day, especially ones related to the RNLI, and I look forward to seeing some become part of our exciting Easter exhibition.’

Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said: ‘I am eager to see the mix of items that the public will bring to the museum and am particularly interested to hear the fascinating and varied stories behind them. We obviously want to find that straw donkey!’

£600,000 to help pupils in Norfolk catch up £600,000 will help Year 7 pupils who didn’t reach the expected level in literacy and maths when they finished primary school in Norfolk catch up with their classmates who did.

Schools will receive £500 per pupil who didn’t reach the expected level to help them through catch-up classes and individual tuition.

Evidence shows only five per cent of pupils who don’t achieve Level 4 in both English and maths at Key Stage 2 go on to achieve five GCSEs at A* to C, including English and Maths.

This extra money, announced by Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg in September at Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference, is to help these children catch up with their classmates.

Schools will have freedom to decide how best to use the catch-up premium, but examples could include: • Small-group tuition supported by new

school struggle to catch up by the time they take GCSEs. Catch-up classes and personal tuition are targeted at those who need a helping hand, so their chances of success are increased rather than letting them fall further behind. This could also allow whole classes to move forward faster together, by boosting pupils’ motivation and thereby reducing disruptive behaviour in class.

classroom materials and resources, which could take place at lunchtimes or after school;

• Holiday support to deliver intensive catch-up over a short period.

Commenting further, Nick Clegg said “Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy in a fairer society, enabling everyone to get on in life. Education is critical to that. The consequences of a pupil being left behind in the basics when they start secondary school can last for the rest of their education. The catch-up premium money being handed out to schools today will help pupils catch up with their peers as quickly as possible. Every child should have the chance to succeed and get off on the right foot when they start their new school.”

• Additional services and materials to add to those provided by the school, such as tutor services or proven computer-based learning or online support.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “No pupil should be left behind in our schools, to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to get on in life. To achieve this it is hugely important that every child has a strong grasp of maths and a good reading ability when they start at secondary school. The evidence shows that pupils who are behind when they start secondary

Sheringham Singers Concert

The Sheringham Singers had an excellent audience at their Christmas Concert on 7 December at the Methodist Church Sheringham. As usual, in the interval, the choir had donated homemade cakes with tea and coffee, and the raffle enabled us to make a donation to Crisis for Christmas, a Salvation Army Charity which provides Christmas food parcels for the homeless.

We had an excellent audience who also sang along with the well-known carols and Christmas songs whilst Val Crowe played the accordion. Our guest musicians were Bob Kerr on bass guitar, David Nightingale on cornet, and Janet his wife, our soprano soloist. We also had the pleasure of three students from Sheringham High School who have always been part of the Singers concerts - Bridie Matthews on clarinet, Amelia Ghambouri on flute and Emily Phillips on the violin. All three students have been part of our concerts and always accompany our audience singing. The choir are very appreciative of their commitment.

From January, Val Crowe will be the accompanist for the Sheringham Singers and Ro Curtis, a very well known musician and singer, will take over as choir conductor. If any ladies wish to join the Sheringham Singers please get in touch with Val Crowe , e-mail address crowe_val@yahoo.co.uk or tel 01263 825149. The choir meet at the Friends Meeting House in Cremer Street Sheringham on a Tuesday afternoon 2pm -3.45 with tea/coffee break at 2.45. You do not need to be a music reader.

Dear Margaret

Most of the members of our society have been opposed to the building of a Tesco supermarket in the centre of Sheringham. There have already been alterations to the proposals which were given planning permission and Tesco’s scheme was given the go ahead over a rival scheme submitted by Waitrose to be sited near the Splash Leisure Centre. It was agreed that many of the “green” issues which had been proposed for the alternative supermarket would be incorporated in the Tesco proposals and planning permission was given, with various conditions attached. Tesco is now seeking to overturn this and eight other conditions. This application runs to 12 A4 pages with 16 revised drawings. Conditions are attached to a permission for good reasons, for the benefit of the community and to be acceptable to the applicant. At this late stage we have found that Tesco had cut down trees which were scheduled to be kept and are intending to plant less than was originally proposed. They have also decided that one of the generators is no longer required and that this space would become a delicatessen – an increase in the retail area. Tesco has also requested that details of the pedestrian walkway from the High Street to the store and associated open air art space which were to have been given before the start of construction may now be given after the start of construction. This could mean a delay to the establishment of the walkway. We feel that the District Council should resist this and hopefully many of the other conditions which Tesco is seeking to change. We would encourage people, like our society, who care about the future of Sheringham, to access the District Council’s website, look up the details of Tesco’s proposals, and stop them from “ fine tuning” their application.

Yours faithfully Peter Strudwick, Chairman Sheringham and District Society

All work guaranteed

Please see the recent photo of me and my wife Grainne enjoying the recent lovely cold snap. We have drifted apart somewhat, and I blame the unreasonable expectations caused by the John Lewis Christmas advert. I imagine you are snowed under with similar letters.

Our nearest store is 25 miles away (and I can’t easily find size 19 snow boots). Coupled with the fact that a recent pay freeze has reduced my disposable income, meant I had to shop locally. A pair of red charity shop woollen socks failed to melt her heart, even though I told her they were special thumb-less mittens. This frosty reception means our relationship is currently on ice but I hope we can rebuild it, given time. The weather is taking a turn for the worse unfortunately with rising temperatures and some sunny spells and time is against us. I may therefore have to water down my expectations.

Dear Margaret

There is a desperate shortage of both adopters and foster carers throughout the UK and more people from all walks of life are needed to come forward.

Many people still believe being gay or lesbian, whether they are single or in a same sex relationship, is a barrier to adopting or fostering, but this is just a myth.

Through our work, the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) has met many amazing adoptive parents and foster carers from the LGBT community who have given hundreds of children a loving, safe and secure family life. We are, therefore, very pleased to support the LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (4-10 March).

There will be information events held across the UK, throughout the week, which will include opportunities to speak to others who have already become a family through adoption or fostering. So if you are thinking about adoption or fostering, please come along and find out more. To find your nearest event, please visit www.lgbtadoptfosterweek.org.uk or for more general information about fostering and adoption, please visit www.baaf.org.uk. Dear Margaret

THE GARTH - Let me tell you about The Garth – well actually it is De Morley Garth to give it its correct name, not far from Sheringham town and just off Holway Road – a little circle of some 27 houses, mostly bungalows. Quite a few of the residents are elderly – in fact taxi drivers who often pick up residents from here call The Garth ‘God’s waiting room’ but what a wait! We all know each other, know when anything is not right, anything is needed, anyone needs help and give it. Everyone feels cherished, cared for and special. If anyone is ill, a lovely card will appear through your letterbox or a bouquet of flowers on the doorstep. I, as one of the residents of The Garth, realise how blessed we are to live here. How wonderful if all our streets could be similar. Get to know your neighbours! Pam Tibbs

Dear Margaret

Please could you thank readers of The Sheringham Independent for the stamps they send me for the various charities that I support. I am now getting short of stamps so if any readers have any stamps or know of anyone who does, please could I ask them to send them to me at the address below. Could I also ask readers if they would be so kind as to make sure they put the correct postage on as I have had several lots where I have had to pay handling fees. Best wishes to you all and keep saving stamps Yours sincerely Jayne Manning, 111 Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0AD

The Fishermen’s Heritage Centre and Shell Fine Art Gallery Are you able to spare just 2 hours a week?

The Sheringham Society is looking for new volunteers to greet and interact with visitors to bring alive the historic Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and the unique Shell Fine Art Gallery on Westcliff.

The Fisherman’s Heritage Centre is dedicated to demonstrating the history of the lifeboats provided by the Upcher family of Sheringham Hall in the late nineteenth/ early part of this century and contains the famous Henry Ramey Upcher Lifeboat. The Shell Fine Art Gallery contains an amazing collection of nearly 200 shell-art creations, all the work of Peter Coke

Over 19,000 visitors visited the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and /or the Shell Fine Art Gallery last year. Visitors comments include: “Loved all the photos-fascinating displays”; “wow-our boys loved it”; ”the most fantastic shell collection we have ever seen”;

The Society is planning to open the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and Shell Fine Art Gallery this year from Easter to the end of September , as well as during the spring and autumn school half term holidays. They are looking for people who could do a two hour slot a week, either between 12am and 2 pm, or between 2 to 4 pm.

If you feel able to spare two hours once a week, or even to be available to fill in occasionally, please get in touch with Paula Chapman on 01263 824338 or by e-mail secretary@sheringham-preservation.org.uk.

Our visitors are invariably in a relaxed, friendly mood and enjoy looking round, so it is a pleasure to greet and chat with them. The basic information to answer the usual questions can soon be acquired and there are no complicated tills or other equipment to operate.
