Sanders Coaches Ltd are certainly keeping their eye on the ball
After a successful taster session in the summer, North Walsham girls under 12s was formed. The team was lucky enough to sign up 10 keen local young footballers. The team now competes in the under 12s Norfolk Women’s & Girls Football League, training once a week on Wednesdays with matches taking place on Saturdays. The girls went on to win the first game of the season 5-0 and now sit mid table in the league. The girls are run by Josh Roper and Georgia Bryant who recently passed their level 1 coaching award. Just a few weeks into the season the team approached Mr Charles Sanders, MD of Sanders Coaches Ltd who kindly agreed to sponsor the brand new kit. ‘The team are constantly improving week by week, all of them have been brilliant so far and have been a joy to coach. The team hopes to stay together for the next few years’.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
Our first meeting of the year took place on 5 February when Nick Walmsley gave us a talk entitled “R101 and the Norfolk connection” after lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.
As well as telling us about the construction of the airship, Nick related the story of its disastrous final flight in 1930. The speaker was astonished to hear that two of our members had seen the R101 fly overhead on that night in North London and Tonbridge respectively.
There were two visitors and one guest at the meeting and it is pleasing to report that all 3 have applied to join.
The next meeting will be on 5 March which will feature Dr. Ian Keymer giving an illustrated talk entitled "A vet's adventures in Colonial Africa". If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out.
If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Now that most people who require neutering vouchers contact us on the “neutering line most of the calls which Stephanie receives are for people looking for a new cat to join their family or for cats to come into care. However, a high proportion of the calls relating to cats to come in relate to “strays and I use this term loosely as so very often the cat concerned has a home not too many doors away from the caller. Stephanie was recently contacted by someone who had been feeding a stray for several weeks and was assured that neighbours had been contacted to check it had not got a home in the area. When a space became available Josh came into care and fortunately for him his fosterer checked to see if he had been micro-chipped (this is normal procedure with all strays that come into care). A few phone calls later we were able to reunite Josh with his family, who lived just a few doors away from the person who had handed him into care. Unfortunately they had misguidedly started to feed him when he was passing through their garden. They have now been advised not to encourage Josh to stray from his home by offering him food. We do now micro-chip all our cats. Kittens may also be chipped depending on their age, or can have this done when they go for their second vaccination. Those already chipped when they come into care are registered to their new owners when they leave for their new homes. This gives them a better chance of being reunited with their family should they go missing. If you have not had your cat chipped please consider doing so.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

Spring into action for Mother’s Day
As Mother’s Day approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think about new mothers and babies when they make a date to give blood.
Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures in hospitals. In addition to accident and emergency situations, blood is often essential to new mothers during or after pregnancy. Premature babies may often need a blood transfusion as well, to replace the blood that is taken for essential testing as premature babies do not make many new blood cells in the first few weeks after birth.
NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, Derek Carr, said “During this month we would like people to think about not only their own mother, but also the mothers and families they can help with their blood donation. As one donation can help three adults or seven babies, donors really can make a difference and help to save a life. We have made it through the winter months due to the dedication of our existing blood donors, but the need for blood doesn’t stop and we still need donors to come forward throughout the year.
Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information, to book an appointment or to find a local blood donor session please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk Sheringham Independent 362 March 2nd 2013

Broadland Model Railway Club
The Broadland Model Railway Club (BMRC) who organises the Bure Valley Railway sponsored Model Railway Exhibition at Aylsham every year has moved to new bigger and better equipped premises at Catfield. This is the Club’s third move in six years however its origins go back more than three decades. It was first formed in 1982 at Royal Air Force Coltishall as the RAF Coltishall MRC. When the former Battle of Britain station was listed for closure by the end of 2006 it was decided to rename the Club as the Broadland MRC in December 2004; this in
anticipation of the inevitable shut-down. However the Club was fortunate in that it was permitted to remain at RAF Coltishall until 31 December 2005. It then moved to two successive locations until finally ending up at Catfield at the beginning of the year.
As a result of moving into larger premises the Club is now in a situation where we can happily welcome new members. For details about the BMRC please contact the Secretary, Peter Kerton on 01263 734553 or E-mail peterkerton@talktalk.net

in master classes. It is certainly not an everyday occurrence to be taught by a BBC Young Musician of the Year cellist Guy Johnston.
The Britten Centenary Festival continued its celebrations at Gresham’s last month with a weekend of premieres as Britten’s work was celebrated via music, exhibitions, film and a book launch.
The Festival welcomed the acclaimed Aronowitz Ensemble, the members of which enjoy international solo careers alongside their ensemble playing. The Senior School Quartet and three pianists from across the Prep and Senior Schools were chosen to take part
Saturday 9 February was another day of firsts as figures from the world of music gathered together in the School’s Auden Theatre for the premiere of the film Benjamin Britten – Peace and Conflict. This full-length documentary drama from Capriol films and narrated by John Hurt, CBE, examines through drama, a series of interviews and original footage, Britten from his days at Gresham’s until his early death at the age of 63. Alongside a cast of professional musicians and actors, many school pupils were involved both in front of and behind the camera and it was clear from the reaction of the audience, the film was a great success, a wonderful and memorable experience for all those involved.

It was the turn of Gresham’s pupils on Sunday 10 February and a concert in Gresham’s Memorial Chapel which brought together singers from the Prep and Senior Schools. Recounting the life of Nicolas, Bishop of Myra. Tenor Julian Forbes sang the part of St Nicolas. The audience was also treated to Britten’s Hymn to the Virgin, written at Gresham’s and his Te Deum. Britten centenary celebrations continue throughout 2013 and the School is particularly excited about the forthcoming performance of War Requiem on Sunday 10 March when Gresham’s Choral Society, staff and pupils from the Prep and Senior Schools perform Britten’s epic choral work War Requiem. The performance starts at 6.30pm, tickets cost £15 and are available from the Auden Box Office 01263 713444 boxoffice@greshams.com
An exhibition of Britten’s time at Gresham’s is currently on view at Gresham’s Auden Foyer. This information is to update you on what happens when you have a blood test taken either at Cromer Hospital, in the surgery (only for special tests) or at home.
If you having a blood test done at Cromer Hospital please remember to take your request form with you and if you are needing a Glucose Tolerance Test(GTT) then you must ring and book an appointment at Cromer Hospital (Tel 01603 646217) beforehand.
All the blood specimens go to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital to be analysed. Depending on the test requested, many of the results are available that same day.
ALL the results are sent electronically to the Doctors at the Surgery. Sometimes if the result is urgent or has a problem that needs attention
that day, the Pathology Department will telephone/fax the Doctor directly. The Doctors look at every result and make a decision how you should be informed of the result and this is always recorded on the computer.
1. Satisfactory/borderline results: If the Doctor hasn’t arranged to inform you directly, when you ring the surgery you will be informed by the receptionist who is following the Doctors direction. If you require any further information then the reception staff are happy to refer you to the Doctor who will call you back. 2 Unsatisfactory results. Again if the Doctor hasn’t contacted you directly the reception staff will be informed on the computer to tell you when you telephone what to do next. The key thing now is improvements for patients – Norman Lamb
The East of England Ambulance Trust is to bring in more full-time ambulances to provide extra cover for towns and villages including Cromer and Potter Heigham.
Commenting on the news, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I welcome this news, which is a sign that the Trust is taking these issues seriously. I have persistently highlighted the problem of unacceptably slow response times, taking up concerns from the public and from ambulance staff themselves. The key thing now is that these steps bring improvements in the service for patients.
I pay tribute to local paramedics who have consistently raised important concerns. They deserve our thanks.”

CAllINg All VOlUNTEErS!
On Saturday, 2nd and Sunday 3rd March The Bure Valley Railway will be hosting its Volunteers Open Weekend for anyone interested in volunteering on the railway. The day will give the opportunity to meet existing staff and volunteers and see behind the scenes, including a chance to drive a steam engine! The Bure Valley Railway is Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway and operates over the nine miles between the market town of Aylsham and the Broads town of Wroxham.
The railway is owned by a small group of enthusiasts and is operated entirely on a not for profit basis, with any profits being reinvested. With the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the railway now carries over 100,000 passengers each year.
Andrew Tunwell, General Manager, says “the volunteers’ contribution is essential to the running of the railway and its long term future. Volunteering for the Bure Valley Railway is a great way to get involved with the local community, make new friends and learn new skills. Whatever your age, whether you are male or female, if you have a couple of hours to spare or can make a more regular commitment, we would welcome your help”.
The Bure Valley Railway invites you to see what fun you can get from becoming a volunteer and looks forward to seeing you.

Cromer Pier Seeks New Manager Ian Hall, General Manager of Norfolk’s iconic Cromer Pier is set to move to pastures new after seven years at the helm of one of Norfolk’s best known landmarks and for Openwide Coastal, the company that operates the attraction on behalf of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), the search is on for Ian’s replacement. During Ian’s time at the pier he has seen it change from a summer season visit without even a cup of tea available for up to five months of the winter to becoming an all year round attraction with a diary of shows and a level of support and customer loyalty that is the envy of many other theatres. Ian has this to say about his impending departure next month “I am sorry to be leaving Cromer and my biggest regret will be to leave behind the many friends, colleagues and wonderful people that I have met and who from the start made me feel so welcome. The pier is an incredible place to work each day, the location is fabulous and it has been an honour to be involved with the continuing success of the famous end-of-the-pier show Seaside Special. The pier team under Openwide management has lots of fresh and exciting initiatives underway to ensure that the business moves forward and has even more appeal to its customers. I feel strongly that the future for the pier is a very bright one.
“With the current major refurbishment of the pier on target and due to be completed this year it is clear that NNDC, the owner of the pier, sees a sustainable and thriving future for the pier too. An exciting job opportunity combined with family reasons now take me away from Cromer, but I look forward to being one of the millions of people who enjoy their visits in the years to come.” Steve Cutbush, Managing Director of Openwide, is equally enthusiastic about the future of the pier. With these exciting prospects in mind he will be enlisting Ian’s help during his remaining time in Cromer to seek a suitable replacement to lead this much-loved venue. He wishes Ian every success for the future. John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Cultural Services, said “We are very sorry to hear that Ian will be leaving Cromer Pier. He has not only acted as an excellent link between the District Council, which owns the pier, and his employers, Openwide Coastal, who manage the Pavilion Theatre and other business outlets on it, his work has also ensured that Cromer Pier, and especially the iconic Seaside Special shows, remain incredibly popular and something we are all very proud to be associated with. His successor will have a hard act to follow.

CLAIRE MARTIN and her band
AUDEN THEATRE, HOLT - Wednesday 27 March at 7.30pm
“The most gifted jazz singer this country has produced in twenty years” Clive Davis – The Sunday Times
Linn recording artist and BBC Radio 3 presenter Claire Martin has spent the last 25 years honing the craft of jazz singing. To worldwide critical acclaim she has established herself as a tour de force on the UK jazz scene, gaining many awards, including winning the British Jazz Awards six times- along the way.
Thanks to her jazz loving parents, Claire grew up in a household full of great music. She became a professional singer at 19, and three years later she realised her dream of singing at Ronnie Scott’s legendary jazz club in Soho. Signed to Linn Records in 1984 Claire has since released 15 cds with the label, collaborating with musical luminaries including Martin Taylor, John Martyn, Stephane Grappelli, Mark Nightingale, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Jim Mullen and Nigel Hitchcock on many of these recordings.
Claire has performed all over Europe and Asia with her trio and she also performs regularly with Richard Rodney Bennett in an intimate duo setting both in England and in America where they play to sell out crowds at venues including the prestigious Algonquin Hotel in New York City. Claire is also a featured soloist with the Halle Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the BBC Big Band and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The BBC Radio 3 programme Jazz Line Up, which she co-presents with Julian Joseph, is now in its 13th year and Claire has interviewed many of her musical heroes such as Pat Metheny, the late Michael Brecker, Brad Mehldau and Roy Hargrove. Her 2009 CD ‘A Modern Art’ prompted Jazz Times USA to claim: “She ranks among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet”.
Claire was thrilled to win both the 2009 and 2010 ‘Best Vocalist’ category at the British Jazz Awards and toured extensively throughout the UK, Scandinavia, Russia and China,
At the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2011, Claire was awarded an OBE for her Services to Jazz.

Without the Merchant Navy, Britain would not, and could not, have survived the Second World War. Yet the stories of the brave men who served under the ‘Red Duster’ flag have largely been ignored – until now. Cromer can make the difference!
Keystage Arts and Heritage is collecting stories of Merchant Navy veterans as part of a largescale project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They are also working with the Merchant Navy Association and historians from Anglia Ruskin University. Now they need the help of local people to research and gather these stories.
We invite local people to attend the free Merchant Navy at War Roadshow. Keystage will show you how to research Merchant Navy stories, tell you about their exciting project and the amazing discoveries already made. They will tell you about the project’s unique exhibition, book and touring play not to mention a dedicated website in which the stories will be held for future generations.
We ask locals: please do your bit to make sure that the amazing stories of the veterans of the wartime Merchant Navy never sink without trace.

Much more than Flowers Emms Stems at Southrepps is much more than a florist.
Yes they do specialise in floral displays of all kinds - for Weddings, Funerals and special occasions such as the up-coming Mother's Day. As well they are part of the Eflorist network so can make UK and International arrangements as well as delivering locally across North Norfolk. However they have many lovely handmade items from local suppliers and from far afield too.
"We have unique gifts, many from local suppliers such as 'Wooden It Be Lovely' who make handmade seasonal items such as hearts for Valentine's Day, handmade bunting and items with a seaside theme."
Handmade jewellery from Aviv in Israel is lovingly crafted in silver and semi-precious stones to suit every occasion. There are glass and ceramic vases, chocolates, helium balloons, Teddy Bears, local honey from Gimingham, handmade goodies from Bali, even Kew Gardens.

Something different for the gardener (or non-gardener) with special greetings cards which you plant in the ground from which flowers will grow.
"We're not difficult to find," said Emma. "Coming from Cromer, take the left turn at the crossroads (signed for Southrepps) just before you get to Thorpe Market, then turn immediately left again into the unmarked Hall Road and you will find us on the right hand side a few hundred yards down the road. And there is plenty of parking space."
Emms Stems also has a really useful Reminder Service, which help to make sure you don't forget that important person or occasion. Just visit www.emmsstems.co.uk and fill in the reminder service form or call into the shop and see Emma about filling the form in with you. Then Emma will send you either a text or email a week before the event to remind you to order your flowers.
Any business needs the personal touch when dealing with the big special occasion (full wedding service, corporate) and Emma has now a comfortable seating area so that customers can take their time and talk through their

The St Andrew’s Ladies’ Association Members recently enjoyed an interesting and informative talk on ‘The Squires of Felbrigg Hall’ given by David Frost, a volunteer room steward at the Hall.
Aided by slides, we were regaled with the history of the estate from its early times when Gyth, the brother of Harold of Battle of Hastings fame, held the manor before Simon de Felbrigg, standard bearer to Richard II, became Squire.
Many changes have taken place in the hands of at least five Williams and other members of the family. The original church was rebuilt, the West Wing added, the Cabinet designed, a new impressive staircase was created along with the removal of the entrance from the front to the side of the house. At various times, the stable block, the Orangerie, the Walled Garden and the dovecote were also added. More recent times saw bathrooms installed, although electricity did not come to the Hall until 1954 – a fact which saved the Hall from requisitioning during WWII.
It was the interesting titbits of information which brought the family members to life the young William Windham II on the Grand Tour collecting treasures for his home, and entering into an engagement which his parents had problems disengaging him from! We heard of friendships with ‘Famous People’ of each era, including Dr Johnson, Humphrey Repton
and Queen Mary who was a regular visitor when at Sandringham. Unlike her usual habit of acquiring gifts through simply admiring them, Queen Mary showed her appreciation of hospitality by giving a Staffordshire teapot to the family, which is still on display today.
A clause in a Will resulted in William Lukin Windham residing in The Parsonage, a big house on the estate, for 40 years before he could move into the Hall, having to wait for the previous William’s widow, Cecilia, to die. Perhaps the most infamous event in the lives of the Windhams, (their names being spelt variously with an ‘i’ or ‘y’ according to which branch of the family each member descended from), was the famous ‘Great Lunacy Case’ of 1861. William Frederick Windham, known as ‘Mad’ Windham, was accused because of unpredictable, at times wild, behaviour, of lunacy. He entered into what was considered an unsuitable marriage and spent vast quantities of money, draining resources from the estate. The court case resulted in his bankruptcy, leading to the sale of Felbrigg and its lands.
Among the most touching slides was one of a photograph of Richard Windham with his aeroplane in front of the Hall. Richard was to die in the Second World War and his brother, Robert, planted an avenue of trees known as the Victory V in his memory.
This brought us to the present time with Robert, a bachelor, leaving Felbrigg to the National Trust on his death in 1969. He
Annual Boxing Day Dip Cheque Presentation
This year’s Annual Boxing Day Dip at Cromer organised by the North Norfolk Beach Runners was held in aid of The Benjamin Foundation and last month a cheque for £1603 was presented to Chris Elliott, Marketing and Fundraising Manager for The Benjamin Foundation. The money represents the bucket collection and the sponsorship from some of the “dippers” that were sponsored.

stipulated that nothing was to be brought into or taken from the house, a wish which the National Trust upholds as best possible, in keeping with the wishes of the last of this most interesting family.
If you would like to join The Ladies Association to hear other talks and enjoy a variety of social evenings, you would be most welcome. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. For more information please contact Chrissy on 01263 822807.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER SPRING IRISES
The Iris is a genus of about 300 species of upright, rhizomatous or bulbous, sometimes fleshy rooted perennials.
The leaves are arranged in fans, sometimes variegated, and the flowers have six tepals (a word used for sepals or petals when they are not easily distinguished). They are grown mainly for their distinctive flowers produced in spring or summer. Taller cultivars are suitable for mixed or herbaceous borders, the smaller cultivars for rock gardens, raised beds and troughs and water irises for the margins of pools and streams.
At this time of year it is the brave, bright flowers of the early flowering bulbous irises that bring life to the gardens. Whatever the weather in late winter or early spring clumps of these brave, bright flowers are ideal for banishing the winter blues. To see them poking through a blanket of snow is a joy. They are quite simply indispensable and fortunately relatively cheap and widely available either as dry bulbs to plant in early autumn or growing

in pots at this time of the year, all ready to bloom.
Recommended varieties include ‘George’. Sturdy rich purple flowers are borne in early spring. 12cm. ‘Harmony’. Royal –blue flowers with a yellow central mark on each fall. 10-15 cm. ‘Major’. Deep blue flowers ‘Joyce’. Deep sky-blue flowers ‘Iris danfordiae’. Yellow flowers with greenish yellow markings on the fall. ‘Katharine Hodgkin’. Delicately patterned blue flowers with yellow and blue marks on the fall. ‘Cantab’. Pale blue flowers with deeper blue falls, each with a yellow crest. ‘J.S.Dijt’. Reddish-purple flowers with a central orange mark on each fall. (Falls are the reflexed outer petals)
Cultivation notes • Grow in well-drained, neutral or slightly alkaline soil in full sun. • Keep just moist during dormant period. • After flowering, feed with a high potash fertiliser to encourage large bulbs to form • Slugs and snails may be a problem, as may grey mould and thrips. • Bulbs planted in potscan be brought into the house to flower but not until the buds show colour to avoid them drying out. • Most of these bulbs usually flower well, but after flowering once, some break up into bulblets of varying sizes. The largest of these may take one or two years before they get to flowering size, and the smallest may take twice as long.
Propagation • Plant Reticula bulbs 5-10 cm apart at a depth twice the height of the bulb, or deeper. • Lift and separate bulbsin mid-summer to early autumn. • Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn or spring. Bob Wilkinson
The early irises associate well with early crocuses and can be used in groups underneath deciduous shrubs such as Daphne mezereum, the fragrant Chimonanthus praecox and the winter noneysuckle Lonicera x purpusii. The irises are not heavily scented and would combine well with winter-flowering SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB violas in containers. February saw us holding our Annual General Meeting when, after the official business was over, members settled down to tuck into a delicious finger buffet, have a good chat, and pit our wits against a Floral Quiz and ‘Old Money’ Brainteaser. Both of these proved quite taxing, but an enjoyable time was had by all.
