Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (SCCS) are delighted to announce that the Society has been awarded a Grants for the Arts funding award of £31,110 by Arts Council England towards the costs of commissioning and performing a major new choral work from the renowned composer (and former Classic FM composerin-residence) Patrick Hawes who lives nearby in north Norfolk.

Grants for the Arts awards are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work. Such support is crucial to the success of this project and the Choral Society is now seeking additional grants and sponsorship to cover the remaining costs.

The new work will be performed for the first time in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1. Based upon Edith Cavell’s own notes and annotations in her personal copy of Thomas a Kempis’ Of the Imitation of Christ, the composition will be large scale choral work with solo soprano, chorus, children’s choir and chamber orchestra and organ. We plan to have the first performance on Saturday 12 July 2014 in Norwich Cathedral where Edith Cavell is buried and remembered especially on the anniversary of her death/execution in 1915. Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society Continued from front cover...

We are delighted to have the support and encouragement of the Dean and Precentor at the Cathedral as well as the local Edith Cavell commemoration committee. This premiere performance will provide a unique way of commemorating the outbreak of the Great War by recalling the life and faith of Norfolk’s courageous WW1 heroine.

It is planned that the performers will include the celebrated soprano, Elin Manahan Thomas, and the English Chamber Orchestra. The children’s choir will be provided by students attending the international Britten Music Course at Gresham’s.

Following the premiere performance in Norwich there will be a special performance in St Peter’s Church Sheringham on Remembrance

Noel Gant is Labour's candidate for Sheringham

North Norfolk Labour Party have formally announced Noel Gant as their candidate for the Sheringham division in the forthcoming county council elections in May.

Noel served on Sheringham Town Council for many years until 2011, spending three of those years as Mayor of Sheringham.

He has always endeavoured to raise and maintain the status as Sheringham as a viable tourist attraction and a town which is desirable for all of us in which to live.

weekend 2014. We plan to liaise closely with veterans associations and other groups to ensure that this is a significant occasion. There is already the possibility of further performances in 2015 in Norwich and Peterborough to mark the centenary of Edith Cavell’s execution.

During the development process Patrick Hawes will hold a workshop in May 2014 at the Auden Theatre in Holt for adults and school children. He will talk about the composition process and provide the opportunity for those present to sing some of his newly composed music. Patrick Hawes who is ambassador for The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts is probably best known for composing the Highgrove Suite for Prince Charles’ sixtieth birthday. Nathan Waring, Musical Director, said “This Arts Council England funding makes it possible for us to move ahead with a tremendously exciting opportunity for our choral society here in north Norfolk .

As the Society celebrates its 80th anniversary we prepare to break fresh ground. This is definitely a once in a life-time opportunity and we are hugely honoured that Patrick Hawes has chosen to work with us. As a community choir we intend to involve as many local people as possible in this project. I am particularly pleased that Patrick intends to involve a children’s choir alongside the approx. 100 adult singers in our choir. We expect there to be very close collaboration between Patrick Hawes, SCCS and Gresham’s throughout the composition, rehearsal and performance process.”

It is the intention that the new work will be published and made extensively available to other choirs in the hope that it will be widely performed elsewhere throughout the four year WW1 commemoration programme. There are also plans to record the work so that it can reach a wide audience through the likes of classic FM where Patrick Hawes has an extensive following having been composer in residence for several years.

Noel was born in the town, and only left Norfolk to join the RAF. After returning with 24 years of service to his name he established a community physiotherapy service until his retirement in 1999. He then set about putting something back into the town in appreciation of the benefits he received from growing up here.

Mr Gant is a ready listener and prides himself on being approachable to anyone and everyone. He promises to serve Sheringham and Beeston Regis on Norfolk County Council to the best of his ability.

The Labour Party have also selected Jono Read as their candidate for Holt division, Scott Eastwood for Cromer division, Callum Ringer for Melton Constable division, and Martyn Sloman for Wells division. Further information about the candidates and their divisions can be found at www.norfolklabour.co.uk.

School Admissions – Parental choice or Hobson’s choice? By Wanda Szczygiel, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

It’s that time of year where many parents are waiting to hear whether or not their child has been offered a place in the school of their choice. Every parent (or guardian) is entitled to express a preference for any school where they would like their children to be educated. Despite the promise of parental choice, many families fail to be offered the place of choice for their child. All schools have admissions criteria to decide which children can be allocated places.

Admissions criteria vary between schools. For example, schools may give priority to children:

• • • •

who have a brother or sister at the school already who live close to the school from a particular religion (for faith schools) who do well in an entrance exam (for selective schools eg grammar schools or stage schools) • who went to a particular primary school (a ‘feeder school’) • in care or being looked after (all schools must have this as a top priority)

If you've been refused a place at the school of your choice, then you're entitled to a school appeal before an Independent Appeal Panel. The admissions authority has to provide you with reasons why they have not offered your child a place and also why to do so at an appeal would prejudice efficient education at the school.

Places for children in Years 3 to 11 at school are classed as a 'normal prejudice appeal'. In these cases the Independent Appeal Panel makes its decisions based on the facts and merits of each case. The panel has to consider three things:

1. Have the admission arrangements been properly implemented? The admission authority's decision to refuse you a place should have been consistent with those arrangements. If the panel decides that the arrangements were not properly implemented and your child should have been offered a place, the appeal will be successful.

2. Will the admission cause problems for the school? If the panel decides that the admission authority properly implemented the school admission arrangements, it will then go on to consider if admitting your child will, or will not, cause problems for the school. If the panel decides it won't, then the school appeal will be allowed.

3. What are you child's needs versus the needs of the school? If the panel decides that the school cannot admit another pupil without causing problems, it will then balance the needs of your child against the needs of the school. If your child's needs outweigh the school's needs, then the appeal will be allowed. If not, it will fail.

For reception or Years 1 and 2 applications, then your school appeal will be dealt with as a 'class size appeal'. These type of appeals are covered

Sheringham Independent 363 March 16th 2013

by legislation which limits class sizes to 30, unless there is more than one school teacher present. In these appeals there are only two grounds on which school appeals can be successful:

1. The admission authority made a mistake and which resulted in your place being denied. 2. The decision was unreasonable, based on the information available at the time.

If for some reason it is not a class size appeal then it will be dealt with as a normal appeal.

The various different types of schools may have different criteria which can be challenged, for example entrance exams. They can also be challenged on the basis of discrimination, if this has been a factor.

As each case is decided on the facts and merits, it is imperative that your case is presented as fully as possible.

If your child has been refused a place and you wish to discuss the prospect of lodging an appeal or any other issue relating to your child’s education, including special needs, disability discrimination, exclusions or suspensions, then please contact Wanda Szczygiel at Hayes + Storr on 01328 863231 or by email: wanda.szczygiel@hayes-storr.com

Aylmerton Church - Passion Sunday on 17 March 3pm. Story of Christ's Passion told in words and music with the choir of St John the Baptist church and lessons read by members of the resident congregation and from the other four churches in the Benefice. Special service continues a tradition at St John's that has been going for at least ten years. The Cross of Christ, a Devotion for Congregation and Choir, was written way back in 1956, and has been popular ever since. The pattern of hymns, lessons and anthems leads us through the momentous events leading up to Christ's crucifixion - a fitting preparation for Holy Week and Easter. There will be refreshments available after the service. More Music Maestro Please!

Although we are surrounded by the most amazing music on our radios, TVs, iPods and tablets, there are still lots of people who like to hear quality LIVE music, which is probably why the Briston Organ Shows always prove so popular!

The next show is on Friday 22 March at the Copeman Centre, Briston, and will feature the very popular Jon Smith. John plays organ, keyboards, piano, melodica, and sings as well (but not all at the same time!) and always attracts large crowds to his performances, probably because he plays everything from pops to classics - and everything in between too - and he also has a great sense of humour as well!

As with all the Briston Shows, proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments will benefit the Hall's ongoing improvements.

The show starts at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). Tickets are ÂŁ6 each (juniors half price) and you can book yours by calling Carol on 01263 860844. We advise advance booking, as tickets sell out quite quickly.

Sheringham Youth Choir gets new name

The successful “Gospel Voices youth choir, based at Sheringham Baptist Church now has a new name.

The choir will now be known as "Sheringham Youth Choir" and is open to anyone of High School age, regardless of what they believe their singing ability to be. There is no requirement to be able to read music.

“People who believe they cannot sing are often amazed at how good they can sound when they join together in song, said Jenny Skivington, the choir leader, “And it’s an excellent way of making new friends

The choir meets to practise from 6 to 7pm every Wednesday, mainly during term time.

The “Gospel Voices choir has been running for two years, and has sung in a variety of places around the county, including Norwich Cathedral and outside the Forum, and have been well received locally. The music is a diverse mix of pop, gospel, spiritual and world music.

They will be taking part in the Good Friday parade around Sheringham later this month, and will once again be appearing outside the Forum in Norwich as part of the “Celebrate Norfolk festival from 7 to 9 June. Anyone wanting further information please visit

HMS Gnar Heralds a New Dawn

HMS Gnar, the world-unique fishing boat feature of Sheringham Skate Park, was unveiled to the public recently. The new skate park on Weybourne Road is the result of seven years of design, fundraising, project management, and construction – and judging by the number of skaters who turned out to ride the new park, it’s already a great success story!

“As soon as Maverick (our construction partners) cleared and reinstated the site, we had skaters from all over the region dropping by to try the park out. We came to say hello late one evening, and the park was full of skaters, BMXers, and bladers all riding under our floodlights in the freezing cold. We knew when we started this project that it’d be successful - looks like 2013 is going to be a great year for coastal skating and youth tourism!” commented Sheringham Skate Project Chairman, Rob Sayles.

The Sheringham Skate Group also launched a ‘Best Photo of the Park Being Ridden’ competition, sponsored and judged by local skate company and professional riding team

Milk Skateboards. The winner of the competition was announced earlier this month as Nick Russell of Sheringham who won the competition with his creative photography and compositions. Milk also awarded a second prize to Yarmouth’s Ollie Mawby. Both winners won a brand new Milk skateboard and special wheel sets. The Group will be running other competitions throughout the year.

Rob outlined the Group’s plans for the future “We’re now planning an official launch event for the public on 6 May. As it’s a long bank holiday weekend, we’re hoping lots of people will come to see what we’ve created, how skaters use the park for socialising and fitness, and also to join in our celebrations. There’ll be bands and DJs, food and drink, prizes and giveaways, and lots of skate demonstrations and displays. We’re also working behind the scenes on a new promotional campaign, which will feature the park and surrounding area – it’s all a bit hush-hush at the moment, but will be the first of its kind and will really showcase Sheringham to the world.”

Sheringham Independent 363 March 16th 2013

The project team is now working with its funding organisations to secure funding for a new youth shelter and upgrades to the floodlighting system. Souvenir exhibition at Henry Blogg Museum

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is excited to welcome visitors to a special exhibition this Easter holiday. Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick! : A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29 March to 14 April at the museum.

LARGE RANGE OF CAR PARTS & ACCESSORIES

WE FIT WIPER BLADES & BULBS FREE OF CHARGE

OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK: MON-SAT 9AM- 5.30PM SUN, B/HOLIDAYS 10AM- 12.30PM 93 STATION ROAD, SHERINGHAM, NORFOLK

TELEPHONE: 01263 823338 www.carpartssheringham.co.uk

The exhibition looks at the history of souvenirs and considers what makes objects special to us. An event held on the 23 February encouraged visitors to bring in their own mementos, especially any straw donkeys! The chosen highlights from this day are now on display alongside their personal stories.

Sadly no donkeys appeared but an interesting variety of souvenirs were discovered. These include Keith Wiles’ beautiful Cromer related milk jug, Cromer lifeboat crew member Paul Russell’s collection of RNLI souvenirs and souvenir secretary Victor Brett’s 1960s lifeboat man doll.

A brass ‘Escape’ sign salvaged from the SS. Teddington and mounted upon a carved wooden block also forms part of the exhibition. The Teddington was a steamship attacked by German aircraft in 1941. The plaque was retrieved from the ship by a fireman, given to Jack Rounce from the lifeboat committee and later donated to the museum. The plaque has become a decorative ornament showing how events are commemorated.

Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick will make an entertaining visit for all the family and includes plenty of child friendly activities. There will be dressing up hats, an interactive Seaside Sally, a Punch and Judy theatre and visitors will be able to design their own postcard.

Drop-in creative sessions will also run on Saturday 9 and Saturday 16 April. These will take place throughout the day between 10am and 4pm. Visitors will be able to create their own Seaside Sallys which consist of decorated frames with peep-holes for the face. It will be a real chance for children, and their parents, to get crafty. Museum Manager Jacqui Palmer said: ‘This is a very exciting exhibition which displays the RNLI collection alongside souvenirs from the public. We look forward to hearing people’s responses and hope they will find it interactive and engaging.’

Rebecca Fletcher, Exhibitions Assistant said: ‘It has been great to work on this exhibition especially as it has involved so many wonderful stories. I hope it will prove enjoyable for all.’

Admission to the museum is free, but donations are always appreciated. Please remember that the museum is closed on Mondays.

The BIG Switch and Save - cheaper energy bills supplied by people power!

North Norfolk residents could save money on their energy bills thanks to a new scheme being introduced by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

A website (www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk) has been set up where residents can submit their details to be included in a ‘reverse auction’ to find the cheapest energy tariff for those householders. By grouping hundreds or even thousands of households together, it is possible to negotiate much lower energy tariffs than if an individual was changing supplier on their own. Schemes elsewhere in the country have seen residents save an average of £171 per year on their bills!

The scheme opened on 1 March and then after the scheme closes for online applications on 8 April, energy suppliers compete in the auction to make the best offer to those customers who applied. This deal is then offered back to those who signed up, who will then see how much

they could save compared to their existing tariff, and be able to make a decision on whether to change to the new tariff. If the householder opts to change to the new tariff, the switch of supplier will be carried out automatically.

The more households who join, the stronger the bargaining power to drive down individual energy bills, and so NNDC has teamed up with other Norfolk councils under the banner of ‘The Big Switch and Save’. People can help by spreading the word among friends and family, but it is also possible to register up to five households on the same email address, which means neighbours and family members could help each other sign up too.

Anyone who wants to benefit from the scheme can sign-up today via

www.bigswitchandsave.co.uk.

Registering is quick and easy - all that is needed is a recent energy bill (one year’s

worth of bills for best results), and a helpline is available on 0800 0488285. For residents with no access to the internet, it is possible to apply over the phone or arrange an appointment at the council offices to get help to register. Call 01263 516044 for more details. Applications can be made until the end of March 2013 (online applications until 8 April).

NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, John Lee, said, “We all know that energy costs are soaring and energy switching is one way individual households can reduce those costs. NNDC is delighted to be able to offer the Big Switch and Save to people in North Norfolk; it could help a great many people cut their energy costs in these difficult times.”

Both projects have been made possible thanks to NNDC’s successful bid for funding from the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s ‘Cheaper Energy Together’ fund.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We recently had to have three cats put to sleep because they had FIP, a fatal disease which is caused by the feline corona virus. Infection with corona virus is very common in cats but generally does not cause any problems, other than mild self-limiting diarrhoea. It is only when the virus changes (which does not happen often) that it mutates and causes FIP. The corona virus itself is common, and experts believe that between 25 to 40 per cent of household pets are infected. The virus is shed in faeces and cats become infected when grooming or eating. Although a cat may be infected with the virus it does not mean it will mutate and that the cat will develop FIP; in fact the number that do is very small. The reason why this happens is not clear and there are several factors which could be involved

This is the first time we have had any experience of FIP and it was heartbreaking to lose them. Two were young cats, littermates, which had joined us from a feral colony. One other kitten from the litter is still in our care and will stay with us until we have the all clear to re-home him. Although there is no blood test which can indicate whether or not a cat has FIP we can check for the corona virus. Another kitten from the same litter found a home before these three came into care and his owner was informed. She decided to have him blood tested to see if he had the virus and his blood tests came back negative. The other cat in care which had FIP was much older and came to us from a multi cat household. Fortunately the other cats which came in with him are both fit and well.

On a happier note we were delighted to be nominated as one of the “Community Matters Charities” for February

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - WOAD

At their next meeting members of the Sheringham Horticultural Society will hear a talk from Ian Howard of the Woad Centre which is situated at Beetley near Dereham about woad and the benefits of using plant pigments.

Woad looks like a cross between spinach and sugar beet and has been grown in Europe since the Stone Age and has had a long association with East Anglia, notably with Boudicca and the Iceni tribe who used it to colour their faces before going into battle. It was thought that they used the colour to scare off the opposition. However, as it has anti-septic properties, it is now suggested that woad could have been painted onto their skins to help heal potential wounds.

At the Woad Centre Ian and Bernadette Howard have developed a range of textiles and toiletries, incorporating woad, mostly made by local craft specialists. The product range includes jackets, jumpers, jewellery, toiletries and stationery.

The meeting will be held at St. Josephs Parish Centre on Thursday 21 March commencing at 7.30 pm. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free to members and there is a £2 charge for visitors. Bob Wilkinson

Spring is fast approaching, the daffodils will soon be flowering, the grass will need cutting and the WORM EGGS will be hatching! Yes, the WORM EGGS! The large amount of dog mess seen on the streets of our towns over the winter months will start becoming a real health issue as the weather warms up. One dog can pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, that’s a lot of eggs going by the amount of faeces on the streets. The council will issue on the spot fines of £80 to anyone caught leaving dog mess in a ‘scoop the poop’ designated area, with court action if the fine is unpaid. Heavy worm burdens may cause anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting and malnutrition. There is also significant risk to human health when dealing with Toxocara Canis (dog Round Worm) as this worm may be transferred to humans by poor hygiene after contact with your pet, especially if your dog likes to lick your face and hands. Worm eggs in the environment may survive for many years, when in the larval form they are infectious to animals and humans. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) recommends a MINIMUM worming frequency of at least every 3 months for dogs and cats or monthly treatments in higher risk situations (i.e. if your pet scavenges/hunts or is in close contact with children). Regular worming of your pet is a fundamental part of responsible pet ownership as well as picking up after your dog in public places. With our March promotion at Miramar Vets, we are trying to encourage the dog and cat owners of North Norfolk to worm their pets by offering 15% off worming tablets throughout the month. Pets need to be registered with the surgery and an accurate body weight must be recorded on their record card. New clients will need an appointment with the nurse before treatment can be dispensed. You will receive a reminder through the post when your next treatment is due. We also have some poo bags and dispensers to give away to encourage owners to pick up after their pets for a cleaner, healthier town. There is limited stock so hurry along to the practice for your freebie.

Rock Bodham launches its lineup for 2013

Rock Bodham launched its full line up for 2013 to a packed crowd at The Crown Inn, Sheringham last month, with a live performance by Johnny Romance and the Lovers plus a special set from DJ Hagster.

Now in its second year, Rock Bodham was set up to showcase local live music from all over Norfolk and this year features eight live bands. Rock Bodham, which takes place on Sunday 21 July on Bodham Playing Field, is part of Bodham Big Weekend which runs from the evening of Friday 19 July through to Sunday afternoon 21 July with a feast of activities for all the family.

The first Bodham Big Weekend, set up by Chairman Peter Bedell and a team of community stalwarts, took place in 2008 and coupled the original Village Fete alongside an evening of live music.

Peter said ‘In 2012 Rock Bodham was formed as part of Bodham Big Weekend and the rest is history. The Big Weekend has gone from strength to strength and 2012 was the largest event in Bodham's History. 2013? We can't wait!’

Bodham Big Weekend Sunday Funday begins at 12noon and is followed by Rock Bodham which runs from 4pm – 11pm on 21 July. Rock Bodham was started by local music promoter Ben Carpenter, Callum Ringer and Peter Bedell to expand Bodham Big Weekend and to showcase hidden talents from across Norfolk.

This year’s line up includes The Yows Yows, BrickRed Cardio, Drop the Clutch, Jake

Morrell, Kamikaze Radio, The Wreckoning, Johnny Romance and the Lovers, JackDaniel and DJ Hagster.

In 2012 six bands played to over 800 people. Darryl Bliss, drummer from Drop the Clutch who also played in 2012 said ‘It was great to be a part of Rock Bodham last year and we're really chuffed to be invited back again this summer. When you spend your time playing late at night in pubs and clubs you don't get to play to such a mixed audience, which for us makes this a cracking event. It's an ideal opportunity for local people to see some amazing local talent too, and maybe it will influence some of the youngsters to take up an instrument, get practicing, join a band and get on stage’

It is hoped that in 2013, with an expanded line up of live music, Rock Bodham will be even more successful for the village. With ticket prices only £2 for adults and free for U12s it is a fabulous event for all the family to enjoy. A BBQ and bar will be available from 12 noon. Organiser Ben Carpenter said ‘Rock Bodham is dedicated to the local music scene giving bands a chance to get a feel of what it's like to play a mini festival. All acts and volunteers have given their time up for free. So if you are a fan of entertainment and live music then this is for you, it truly is a wonderful event, so be sure to come along and support it’

Monies raised over the whole weekend will go towards Bodham village causes such as the Playing Field, the Church and Village Hall as well as a meal for the village OAPs and a Children’s Christmas Party. A donation will also be made to Holt First Responders who cover the event.

The audience can expect a day filled with entertainment and live music from a variety of different acts, with feedback from 2012 overwhelmingly positive, organisers are looking forward to this year’s event. Ceridwen Smee who attended in 2012 said “having witnessed the vibrant, eclectic mix of fantastic live music I was thrilled to have attended the jam packed day set in some of Norfolk’s most beautiful countryside. Unique, fun and appealing to all ages it is amazing value for money”.

Ceridwen went on to say ‘I simply can’t wait to rock it out this year with my family and I shall not hesitate to rave to others and spreading the word that Rock Bodham 2013 will most definitely be one event not to miss!’

Rock Bodham is sponsored by Starlings Toymaster for the second year running. Jon Starling from Starlings Toymaster said about the event ‘it was such a popular event last year I can see this year being even bigger. Not only are we sponsoring because the event raises money for local causes but because the event lets lots of up and coming local talent play a big stage which they otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to do. Being a musician myself I understand how important this is. We’re really excited about being part of this mini festival!’ The event is also sponsored by Sanders Coaches who will be putting on a bus to get people home after Rock Bodham. From 11.15pm Sanders Coaches will be running buses for only £1 to Cromer, Sheringham and Holt.

Other sponsors for both the Big Weekend and Rock Bodham include The Crown Inn, Sheringham, CT Baker, Graphic Edge Crayford & Abbs and local residents.

Bodham Big Weekend and Rock Rodham would like to thank all the artists and sponsors who are giving up their time for free to help this village event along with committee members and many volunteers from the village who make the day such a success.

Winter Notes from the Commons

December remained relatively frost free with a temperature high that nearly reached 14°C (23 Dec). South-westerly winds dominated throughout the month bringing a fair amount of wet weather.

The wildlife of the Commons was mainly residents with few winter visitors at the start of the period. The Green Woodpecker, a regular winter sighting (1 Dec) and the Woodcock (2 Dec) were present on many days during the winter. A Red Fox was noted (6 Dec) and Mark Clements spotted two Canada Geese overflying and a Grey Wagtail (8 Dec). A surprising find was made by Carl Brooker when he visited the Newt Pond (13 Dec) and saw three large Koi Carp. On the following day (14 Dec) four Common Snipe were present on the marshes and Mark reported 20 Fieldfares heading west over the Common (15 Dec) plus three Siskins and a Woodcock. A Kingfisher made a fleeting appearance (17 Dec) and a party of five Bramblings were seen by Mark (25 Dec). After Christmas the Newt Pond was cleared of silt and rank vegetation. This involved the use of a digger and the work was carried out for the Town Council by Ed Farrow. Just before the operations started a Barn Owl was watched quartering the area north of the pond. The Koi that had so far eluded the attentions of a Heron were quickly netted being quite sluggish and later transferred from the Newt Pond to a more

Goldfinches of at least 60 birds made an impressive site (11 Jan). The Goldfinch was known by the country-folk as ‘King Harry’ and Draw-water. Draw-water is a direct translation of the Dutch word for Goldfinch Putter and apparently refers to caged birds being trained to draw up water. The next day (12 Jan) was a sunny and ‘warm’ day on which Mark found a queen Common Wasp and a Common Frog. However, with snow occurring from 14 to 21 January, any other selfrespecting insect or amphibian would remain in hibernation! The Barn Owl was again frequently seen after the rapid thaw, generally in the early afternoon.

(18 Feb), after which the weather then turned decidedly wintery again with a chilly blast of east to northeast wind, which brought the occasional snow flurry. A further change in the weather saw the return of sun for the last couple of days and a drop in the wind thus ushering in March as a ‘lamb’. Should we expect March then to exit like a ‘lion’! Bramblings and Siskins were still evident as February closed and a solitary Common Snipe was present (27 Feb). To close the month a Common Buzzard circled overhead and slowly drifted west (28 Feb). No frogs had appeared in the ponds at the end of the month but with warmer weather predicted for early March by the time you read this they are likely to have spawned.

A Firecrest was spotted by Mark (2 Feb) and a wintering Chiffchaff was found by Peter Beard (3 Feb). Other signs of ‘Spring’ noted included Hazel catkins and ‘pussy’ willows out (11 Feb). Francis Farrow, Hon. Warden The following day (12 Feb) Mark recorded a www.beestoncommon.org.uk mixed flock of finches, including Brambling, Siskin and Redpoll with Coal and Marsh Tit present. Bramblings are a northern finch and a winter visitor to the UK. If you would like to see these pretty orange and black finches up close and in some numbers hurry along to the ‘Hawk and Owl Trust’ reserve Six smaller portions of exciting at Sculthorpe Moor, near Fakenham dishes for you to enjoy before the end of March. The Trust has placed many bird Available each Thursday - Saturday feeders in front in the Barn Restaurant of hides and has attracted 150+ £30 per person Bramblings this Booking is essential winter. The ‘spring’ theme continued for Restaurant and Children’s Menu a bit with four Song Thrushes singing also available (15 Feb) and the flowering of Book now for our super Sunday Snowdrops and Family Roast served from 12 noon Winter Aconite (17 Feb). A Common Buzzard heading west and 23 Siskins were seen by Mark

suitable place. Whoever released them into the Newt Pond was being irresponsible in that such fish do-not take to the ‘wild’ naturally and are generally pampered in garden ponds with filtered water and a continuous food supply. Also the area being part of an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) it is illegal to introduce species and especially so if the species are of a non-native variety.

January was less wet than the previous month although colder and with snow from around mid-month. With snow it is always good to do some tracking and the Newt pond produced an interesting combination of Grey Heron and Red Fox tracks along the margin of the Newt pond. Mark reported a Stock Dove and eight Lapwings flying over (3 Jan). A Reed Bunting was present (6 Jan) and a flock or ‘charm’ of

I have had occasion to visit both the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and the new Cromer Hospital variously in recent times. What a contrast they represent.

The car park at Cromer is always unexpectedly empty perhaps because you have to buy three hours time for two quid, even if you are only nipping in for an x-ray or a blood sample, so the road outside is cluttered with vehicles.

Arrive at Norwich Hospital and it is like trying to park near the football ground on match day. Our enormous county hospital is overwhelmed with unremitting demand day and night whereas Cromer Hospital is in reality a part time very posh clinic dealing in the main with blood sampling and x-rays, and takes no strain off the Norfolk & Norwich.

Still, there it is, newly built and very imposing, but A&E and hospital beds are still 30 miles away from us coastal dwellers who still face a long and uncertain wait for an ambulance

Sponsored Hair Cut for The Little Princess Trust and Alzheimers

Bee van der Does from Sheringham had eight inches of her hair cut off at Hair Couture in Cromer on 31 January to donate to The Little Princess Trust. The Trust make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or other medical reasons.

Bee is also raising money for The Alzheimer's Society in memory of her mother-in-law Gerrij van der Does Lindeboom, her friend Julia Boswell and her father who all died with Alzheimer's plus her sister-in-law who lives with Alzheimer's and was diagnosed in her 40s. Bee said "I have watched people I love deteriorate to the point when they no longer recognise family or friends and their personality completely changes. This is heart-breaking and painful and gives a feeling of helplessness because they cannot express their emotional state or physical pain".

If you would like to donate to The Alzheimer's Society please go to

www.justgiving.com/BeevanderDoes.

Alzheimer's will receive the money directly plus GiftAid.

Bee was inspired to have her hair cut off by Lucy and Sue House and Molly Butterworth.

to get us to Norwich. It is no fun – I have made the trip.

What amazed me most having arrived at A&E was that our ambulance crew were idle for an hour before being freed only after booking in their patient. As I recall there were six ambulances crews queuing up at the same time, all kicking their heels. If the system allowed them to hand over on arrival to a third party to deal with the waiting time they could load on a new trolley and get back on standby. Too simple, I suppose.

Trying to change the NHS is difficult and inefficiency is perpetuated because of apathy. My daughter, 25 years with the NHS, highly qualified and experienced, is wasting her skills now, forced to deputise for a department head who has been on leave for over three years (not in Norfolk). She regularly gets her reports and

forms completed on time, but as all the other departments are less efficient, she has, unbelievably, been asked to make late returns so as not to show the other laggards up.

The same principle applies here as GP surgeries no longer take blood samples, but issue an instruction for patients to trail off to Cromer Hospital instead, which gives the place work, but wastes time and makes much inconvenience for patients.

Will it change? Don’t bet on it …

Laser Facelift at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic More and more patients with busy lives are looking for less invasive treatments with less downtime to improve their profile and tightness of their face and neck. The laser assisted face and neck lift is an exciting, effective, and safe option for patients who wish to tighten the skin and underlying tissues of their face and neck. For good candidates, liquefying a small amount of fat to smooth the contours and heating the underlying tissues to tighten the skin may be the answer they are looking for.

We like it best as it avoids a tell-tale skin incision or scar in front of the ear. Any surgical procedure can cause a scar so we try and avoid this risk by not cutting the skin.

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director and Laser Surgeon at the Coltishall Clinic explains- “We use the newest generation of laser-assisted lipolysis [fatdestroying] and skin tightening devices. This is a third generation laser using wavelengths that allows the melting of fat and the heating of soft tissue to stimulate collagen formation to tighten the overlying skin. When used on the face, it is called a Laser Facelift.”

When to Choose the Laser Assisted Facelift Treatment Laser assisted facelifting is great for men or women. A good candidate for this procedure is: • in good general health • not smoking • has localised areas of fat in the jowl area and under the chin • has good skin integrity.

Skin tightening alone can be accomplished on underweight patients. Dr Gheyi will examine your face and neck to determine if you are a good candidate. A laser facelift is safer than and more economical than a traditional full face or neck lift.

How does the Laser Facelift Work? Dilute solution of a local anaesthetic is used to numb the areas treated on the face and neck. This can be done with minimal discomfort.

You can be listening to your favourite music while this is being done.

Once the area is numbed, three or four tiny 1mm openings are made, one behind each earlobe, and one or two under the chin. Small hollow metallic tubes called cannulas are passed through the fatty layer under the skin to make tunnels.

Then, a tiny 0.6 mm laser fibre is passed through fat between the skin and the muscles. The laser energy heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors.

Lastly, a small amount of fat, the amount varies from patient to patient, is suctioned away when needed.

Recovery and Results Typically, only one treatment is required to obtain optimal results. Initial results can be seen within one week, with continued improvement over the next three to four months as tissues continue to tighten and heal. Some patients may benefit from a limited incision or mini-lift at the same time if they have significant sagging in the jowl area. This can also be combined with a thread lift for additional tightening.

After the Laser Facelift, your face will be wrapped in a gauze compression dressing. The next day, you

E. & M. Grimes

BUILDERS Telephone (01263) 740274

will be fitted into a facial compression garment. Under most circumstances, compression will be required for three to four days followed by nightly use only. Compression helps to push out swelling, decrease scar tissue formation, and promote smoothness of the treated tissues.

Laser facial sculpting is less invasive and less traumatic to tissues than a traditional facelift. Therefore, there is less downtime for recovery. Most patients are able to resume work in two to five days and return to all usual activity, including vigorous exercise, within two weeks. Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the initial post-operative period with gradual resolution of discomfort in the following days to weeks. Snugness of the skin may be experienced for a matter of months.

Coltishall Clinic offers a full range of Cosmetic Medical and Surgical Laser procedures. We offer a range a solutions including non-surgical face and neck lifts, liquid facelifts, thread lifts and now the innovative laser facelift.

Norman Lamb MP visits British Heart Foundation shop the 30th annual No Smoking Day campaign. emotional burden smokers endure by feeling in Sheringham The data showed money matters often prick the guilty about the impact their Norman Lamb, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, visited the British Heart Foundation store in Sheringham at the beginning of this month to find out more about the BHF’s No Smoking Day campaign.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Lamb commented “Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with people who have never smoked. The work of organisations like the BHF in helping people to stop smoking is incredibly important - I know myself how difficult it can be to quit”.

Nearly a third (29%) of smokers surveyed admitted their children or family hates them smoking and a quarter enjoy smoking less nowadays because they feel more guilty about it.

Proving loved ones can often come a poor second to cigarettes, almost one in five (19%) of smokers confessed they could buy more for their family if they were to quit smoking, according to figures released by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to mark the launch of

conscience of smokers; as just over a third (34%) said they feel guilty about the amount they spend on cigarettes and a similar number (28%) stated they avoid thinking about it.

Not only were smokers keen to dodge calculations on cost but self-deception was also evident, as one in five (18%) acknowledged they probably underestimate how much they spend on cigarettes.

Out of the 2,000 smokers questioned, a quarter (25%) surprisingly reported that money is actually a bigger motivator to quit smoking than the effects on their long-term health.

The BHF is using this insight for its No Smoking Day campaign this year by encouraging smokers to ‘swap fags for swag’ and think about the financial incentives of quitting. An average smoker, based on 20 a day, can save £7 a day, £49 a week, £210 a month and £2,555 a year if they quit. Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the BHF, said “These figures reveal the

addiction has on family life and their finances. Fortunately, if you smoke and want to stop, we’re here to help.

“More than 750,000 smokers will have attempted to quit on No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March so why not get ready to join in and reward yourself and your family with the money you save when you ‘swap fags for swag’.”

Each year, the No Smoking Day campaign is responsible for helping more than 750,000 people across the UK attempt to quit on the day, and for inspiring another 1.5 million to seek out information to help them quit in future.

Approximately 10 million UK adults smoke but about two thirds say they want to give up. Smokers who want to find out more can visit WeQuit.co.uk, call our free helpline on 0800 434 6677 or join us on twitter using the hashtag #NoSmokingDay.

Beth and Simba - what a team!

Fifteen Beth Poulter, who is currently in Year 11 of Sheringham High School has a particular passion for dogs and regularly competes all over the country in a sport called Dog Agility. Beth told The Sheringham Independent ‘I have been lucky to compete within the sport on an international level at Crufts in Birmingham with my Shetland Sheepdog, Simba who I have personally trained from the age of nine years. I train at several different clubs, travelling around the country competing for my county and country’. ‘In 2012 I attended the British Agility Association finals held in August, held at Ashfordby, and came away re-gaining my title for the second year running 'Under 16 Elementary Junior Handler of the Year'. I am

hoping to go on and regain this prestigious award this year. What’s more, at these finals I also won the over twelve junior jumping finals, along with a second place in the British Open Championships against other adults’. ‘Last month, I travelled to Maidenhead to compete for Team England at the Open Junior Agility Championships. It was a massive honour competing with both of my dogs, Simba and Poppie. I had a fantastic time and also enjoyed successes while at the Championships. I gained two bronze medals for Over Twelve Team Jumping and Over Twelve Medium Singles. But best of all I received a fantastic trophy and Over Twelve Medium Overall Singles, second place’. ‘At the BAA finals this year, I hope to go on and achieve even better, after receiving my GCSE results in August. My Shetland Sheepdog and I have a very special, unique bond for a person of my age. Growing up with Simba has been a massive honour and I really couldn't wish for anything better’. Well done Beth and Simba – we wish you well for your future competitions.

Aylsham's Festival of Quizzes

Two great Aylsham events have joined together to present a "Festival of Quizzes". The pair of quiz nights, one in April, the other in May, are being staged by Aylsham Wide Sky Festival and Aylsham Food Festival respectively, each having its own distinctive format but offering a discount on ticket prices if you go to both! Aylsham Town Hall is the venue for both quizzes with the first on Saturday 6 April. Questions for this will centre around the Aylsham Festival's 2013 theme of 'Paths & Patterns'. Tables will be for up to six people and tickets are just £7 per person, which includes a Ploughman's Supper.

Regular Aylsham and district quizzers will be familiar with the Food Festival's annual event

where the quizmaster comes up with a hundred or so questions all linked in some way, no matter how tenuous, with food and drink. This year the Foodie quiz will be on Saturday 11 May, again in the Town Hall with tables for up to six and the ticket price is also £7, this time to include a 'Savoury Pie Platter' for all contestants.

In addition to the food on offer at both quizzes, there will be a licensed bar with a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks.

Dedicated quizzers - or those just wanting a couple of sociable fun evenings - will no doubt want to take advantage of the Festival of Quizzes special offer: if you buy tickets for

both events at the same time, the normal cost of £14 will be cut to just £12 - a saving of £2! Tickets for the two quizzes are available from Salad Days fruit & veg stall in the Market Place on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings or log on to the Aylsham Wide Sky Festival website at www.aylshamfestival.co.uk

Aylsham Wide Sky Festival runs this year from Thursday 23 May to Tuesday 28 May while Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, will be from Friday 4 October to Sunday 6 October. There's more detail at the Aylsham Festival website, above, and at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk

Happy 90th Birthday to Barbara Wallers

On 19 February Mrs Barbara Wallers celebrated her 90th birthday party at St. David’s Care Home in Sheringham.

999 Day

Very exciting times ahead with the up and coming 999 day the 'Friends' are organising at North Walsham Infant, Junior School and Nursery, Manor Road, North Walsham. This will be held on Saturday 18 May from 11am - 3pm.

Originally from Hertfordshire, Barbara moved to Norfolk to be near her daughters approximately seven years ago and moved to St. David’s in 2010, where her daughters say she is well looked after, taking part in all the activities and enjoying her life with the other residents.

There will be refreshments, craft stalls, car boot, arena events, business stalls. Visits from the 999 services including ambulance, fire engines, police dogs and more.

We are opening it up for people to join us so if you would like a car boot spot please contact Laura on 07867 928080.

All the staff at St. David’s wished Barbara very happy birthday and she was joined by most of her family for a lovely afternoon and birthday party.

If you would like a craft stand please contact Tina on 07787297279. And if you would like a stand for your business and all other enquiries then please contact Amanda on 07799307299.

This is going to be a fantastic fundraising event so we can purchase a defibrillator for the site.

Everyone at The Sheringham Independent wishes Barbara a belated Happy Birthday.

We have many children, teachers and visitors to our school so we realise how important it is to be prepared for any eventuality.

Twenty-nine members and guests enjoyed lunch at the Dales followed by Ian Duffill speaking on ‘The Restoration of past and present Boats’. Ian’s working life started in computing, working in the European Union in Athens. He later became a Deputy Headmaster and also delivered sailing yachts, but it was obvious that the boat connection was ‘the love of his life’. He now spends his time ‘breathing life back into boats’. His talk was illustrated with photos and he howed us some of the specialist tools used and explained operations for bending timbers – oak, ash and larch- into the required shapes for the wide range of boats he has restored. A lightweight, easily moved Uffa Fox boat, built in 1938, required cutting away and replacing

rotten timbers, but a crane was needed to restore the 26 ton fibreglass Liverpool built Pilot Cutter with two Rolls Royce engines (each generating 410 horsepower). This boat was later used for diving parties and maintenance work on offshore lighthouses. The former Wells lifeboat, Lucy Lavers, saved numerous men from Dunkirk. As a Trustee of Rescue Wooden Boats, Ian is involved in her restoration, aimed at sending her back to Dunkirk for the 5015 Reunion. Afterwards she is to be used to give parties of school children a ‘taste of the sea’. Ian encourages those interested to join him in building and restoring boats. Roasted confit of Norfolk Gressingham Hoi Sin Duck from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett We have a great Easter coming up at the Grove, with a Good Friday Fish Night, the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday (perfect for kids) and a superb selection of best Icarus Hines’ roasts for Sunday lunch – phone to book on 01263512412.

This is a lovely starter that’s extremely popular whenever it’s on, and will certainly be featuring throughout the Easter period. When it first appeared the manager made a small mistake on the menu, and word spread that The Grove was serving the most delicious hoi-sin Guck (much to the amusement of both our diners and our front-of-house staff). However, this Gressingham duck is the best around and I love cooking with it.

Serves two Ingredients: 2 Gressingham duck legs (available at Icarus Hines) 1 small jar of duck fat 1 white onion (diced) 1 carrot (diced) 1 leek (diced) 1 stick celery (sliced) 1 litre vegetable oil

20g Chinese five spice 20g-35g Jubberwacky plum sauce (available at Cromer Farm and Health Shop)

to serveI spring onion finely sliced 200g cucumber (diced)

cooled a little (but not all the way) strip, discard any fat and shred. Put the duck on a roasting tray and sprinkle the Chinese five spices over. Roast until the duck is crispy, and while still warm add the delicious Jubberwacky plum sauce.

Method: Take both duck legs and trim around the top of the leg joint to remove the tendons. This will ensure the duck stays nice and tender This can be served with your spring onion and thoroughout the cooking process. In a report looking at all local authorities across the country, the Tax Once the duck has Payers’ Alliance pointed out that NNDC was one of 118 local authorities that increased the number of senior staff being paid over £50,000 between the financial years 2010/11 and 2011/12, with overall staffing costs increasing as a result.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Finance, Wyndham Northam, said in response, “The Tax Payers’ Alliance should really be looking at more recent figures. The situation they describe is completely out of date. The Council undertook a radical restructure of its senior staff a year ago, over the winter of 2011/12, reducing the Corporate Leadership Team from 5 to 3 and the number of Senior Managers from 13 to 7. This has not only helped to improve efficiency, which was the primary aim, but has also reduced staffing costs by £231k.

Sheringham/Muzillac Twinning Organisation

A wonderful roast meal supper was served at St Peter’s Church Hall on Friday, 22 February, prepared and cooked by members. Forty people very much enjoyed the evening which incorporated a raffle, charades, much chatter and laughter. The evening was likened to an amazing indoor street party with the bunting, colourful tables and merry atmosphere. The object of the evening was to have a Winter Warmer

get together with members and friends and to aim at raising funds for the Twinning.

Notice of our AGM : Tuesday, 26 March at St Peter’s Church Hall in Sheringham at 7.30pm followed by a Talk with a French Theme by Julia Hurlbut. Glass of wine and nibbles. All welcome.

Sheringham & District Society Coffee Morning

A full house enjoyed a very entertaining talk and slide show given by Graham Lubbock, a National Trust ranger with particular responsibility for Blakeney Point and the seals and birds that live or nest there. It was an excellent talk and gave us food for thought when considering climate change and the changing sea temperature.

Our next talk will be on Tuesday 26 March and not the normal last Thursday. This is Holy Week and our speaker will be Bishop Peter Fox who will be giving us a talk on Magic and giving us examples of his craft.

As St. John Hall is being demolished shortly, this will be our last coffee morning in the Hall. Doors open at 10.15am and the talk will begin at 10.30am. Admission is ÂŁ2 which includes tea or coffee and homemade cakes. Everyone is most welcome - you do not need to be a member of the Society.

In future, from April, the coffee mornings will still be held on the last Thursday of the month but in St. Joseph's Hall in the Cromer Road. Although this is a bit further out of the town, there is a large car park.

We look forward to seeing you.

100km London to Brighton Challenge Hello! My name is Libby Ashton and on the 25th and 26th May myself and my friend Tina Foster (both from Sheringham) will be taking part in the 100km London to Brighton challenge.

We will be part of a team of four and we will be walking the distance through the day and night. We are aiming to finish in around 24 hours. I will be fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK and Tina is fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Our target is to raise a total of £800 between us, £400 for each charity. I had already decided to take part in the challenge but decided on the charity after the sad death of a work colleague from pancreatic cancer. Tina decided on her charity as her niece suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and The Cystic Fibrosis Trust has been a wonderful support for the family along with the brilliant research they do into the condition.

Our New Year’s resolution this year was to make 2013 our fittest year so we have been doing lots of training together. We both plan on entering Norwich Half Marathon later this year (this will be Tina’s second time at the event)and several other 10km events but this is by far the hardest fitness challenge we have ever set ourselves (or ever
