Young Sheringham Stars in Musical Spectacular!
Hills are not usually the first things that spring to mind when Norfolk is mentioned, but soon hills will be alive with the sound of music, as this well loved show comes to North Norfolk. Starring in this well known show are two sets of Von Trapp Children, all of them local, and all of them incredibly talented.
and Dramatic Society, who have a reputation for putting on hugely successful shows.
The story of the would-be nun, Maria is well known, and this production promises to be another outstanding success with its lavish sets and costumes, slick production and glorious singing accompanied by a full orchestra. You can’t help but tap your feet to these catchy songs. You will be inspired by the astounding emotion of ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain,’ sung by Janette Davison in her role as Mother Abbess, and which, for many, is the most dramatic song in the entire show.
From Sheringham, Hope Emery-Adams and Max Merron, both aged ten, will play the roles of Marta and Kurt, in the Schnitzel team at the Pavilion theatre, Cromer in May. The other team, as you’ve probably guessed, is the Strudel team!
This is great all round family entertainment Max and Hope at its best. The show runs from May 25th to Hope, who goes to Sheringham Primary School, June 1st, with matinees on Sunday 26th May and Saturday 1st June. wants to be a dancer or a teacher when she is an adult, while Max, who goes to Greshams Prep school in Holt, has his eye on being a footballer. Tickets available from the Pavilion Theatre, Box Office Cromer, on
These youngsters have been rehearsing with the other Von Trapp children since January, and have been learning songs, stage directions, scripts and even dance choreography to make this show a huge success. The show is being presented by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic

"Quality Legal Advice You Can Rely On"
On Cromer Road, next to the play park, in Sheringham you will find the very welcoming office of Silver & Ward Solicitors Ltd
They specialise in making sure that every client has the opportunity to explain their legal needs in a personal, friendly and professional environment that is not intimidating.
"It is vital to keep costs competitive for our clients’, particularly in a tough economic climate and with Legal Aid effectively disappearing from the 1st April", commented Clare Mayell, “We have over 20 years’ experience and can offer the same legal expertise you would expect from a big city solicitors or a larger local firm, but at very competitive rates. Our office may be smaller than other firms but the legal expertise the same. We are delighted to say that because of our approach our reputation is far reaching and we now act for clients’ who are not based in
Norfolk but live further afield, including London, Leicester and South Shields, location is not an issue."
"We pride ourselves in being one of the very few solicitors that offer new clients a free first consultation, to give the best advice in tackling whatever the legal problem may be."
Silver and Ward have 'A fresh approach to law!' - "We make it our priority to remove the stress and worry for clients’ going to see a solicitor and the misconception that solicitors are expensive and make a legal issue bigger than it needs to be. We aim to resolve your legal issue in the most simplest and cost effective way possible."
"We want our clients to be able to make an informed decision as to how to proceed in what can be a difficult time for them."
They also offer free parking and disabled access/parking and can offer home visits, even if you are not in Sheringham.
Last word from Clare Mayell, "If you have any legal issue then why go anywhere else? We can offer a free first appointment and know that the service we can provide, the legal expertise and very competitive costs help us to stand out from other firms. We are here to help!"
If you would like to make your free first appointment, whatever your legal issue is, either at their office or at your home then please telephone 01263 823465 or email Clare at clare@silverandward.co.uk. www.silverandward.co.uk 15A Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8AB
Sheringham Medical Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG) waiting room, funded by the PPG. Monthly news ‘Clinical Commissioning Group’s (CCG) and you as patient’
When Andrew Lansley (ex Health Minister) first sprang Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) on the World in 2010 he pledged they would be the most important bodies in his new, radically restructured NHS. As he said: ‘CCGs are at the heart of our NHS modernisation plans. They will put healthcare professionals in the driving seat so that they have the freedom and responsibility to design services on behalf of their patients – delivering better-quality and integrated care’.
Three years on and North Norfolk CCG is made up of 20 GP Practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland. A GP representative from each practice has voting rights and makes the important decisions about local healthcare. As well as GP’s the Governing body has lay members, a hospital doctor and a registered nurse. The CCGs will be replacing the present PCT’s as from 1st April 2013. For more information www.northnorfolkccg.nhs.uk
How can you become involved? All the 20 GP practices in North Norfolk have patient groups (PPGs). They offer the opportunity to become more involved in how
NNLD
the practice runs. This could be about the physical building, waiting times, services offered or wider health issues. WE have an active PPG at Sheringham Medical Practice made up of patients and staff.
If you need further information or just want to come and talk confidentially about any issues or concerns you have to a patient member then we are trialling a walk-in session on every Wednesday morning 10.30 to 12 starting in April at Sheringham medical Practice. If this is not convenient to you telephone Noel Gant Tel 01263 825538 or Pauline Craske (Practice Manager) Tel 01263 822066

North Norfolk Chamber Opera
The wait for North Norfolk Chamber Opera's production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera is almost over.
The Threepenny Opera is a seminal work of the 20th Century with a number of hit tunes, a surrealist plot that Monty Python could only envy and a satire that is shocking in its relevance to today's society.
Prepare for an evening that is fabulous, funny and frightening ...

Dr Roebuck Departs From Sheringham Medical Practice
The team at Sheringham Medical Practice announce that Dr Roebuck is leaving the practice for pastures new. He has been a partner and core member of the practice clinical team for nearly eighteen years and recently decided to pursue his career outside the locality.
Dr Roebuck said: “After approaching eighteen years of investment in a community of which I am very fond, it is with some regret that I have taken the opportunity to embark on a new challenge in the next phase of my professional career. This difficult decision has been arrived at after some months of consideration and is entirely a progressive and positive move from both a professional and personal perspective. I wish all at Sheringham Medical Practice well for the future and have little doubt they will continue to deliver innovative and outstanding Primary Care.”
Dr Ian Smith, Executive Partner at the practice, said: “We would like to thank Dr Roebuck for the outstanding contribution he has made to the provision of excellent clinical care at Sheringham and we are very sad to see him go.”
Dr Roebuck will remain with the practice for a six month period prior to moving on in August. His patients will not need to take any action as all patients are registered with the practice rather than individual doctors. All patients will continue to be cared for by the team at Sheringham.
Drs Smith, Sampson and Scott remain as full-time partners with the practice and they will recruit with a view to supporting the long term future of high quality clinical care in Sheringham. “In recruiting a replacement for Dr Roebuck we hope to add positively to the skillmix and capabilities of the clinical team in a way that will really benefit our patients. We will let patients and the local community know as soon as we have made an appointment” said Dr Smith.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
Our Taster Menu is proving to be very popular with our diners and we are delighted with the comments we have received. We are going to continue with the menu for the coming months while we start thinking about our summer menus. Planning new menus is always an interesting and exciting task, with so many local growers and producers in north Norfolk choosing fresh produce is a pleasure. We endeavour to use as many local suppliers as possible as we believe in supporting local businesses and know that we almost certainly will not find better.
With Easter just a week or so away we are expecting a busy time and are looking forward to serving some of the many visitors to Overstrand who return to the village each year for the Easter break. Our special ‘Family Sunday Roast’ will remain on the menu for the coming weeks, it’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast and
we believe real value for money. We have just launched our new Wine List, retaining some of our most popular bottles whilst introducing some new and tantalising wines for our diners to try. Have a good Easter and we hope to see you at the White Horse very soon.

Nathan’s recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients 16oz Good quality Chocolate 2oz Salted Butter 12oz Granulated Sugar 4 Large Eggs 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence 2oz Cake Flour Pinch of Salt 14oz Chocolate Chips 4oz Pecan Nuts Chopped and Toasted
Sheringham Independent 364 March 30th 2013
Method Melt the 16oz of chocolate and set aside.
With an electric mixer combine the sugar and butter, add the eggs then add the vanila, salt and flour.
With mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted chocolate and add chocolate chips and pecan nuts.
Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment.
Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop, or two tablespoons, scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes.
This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

Guides and Air Cadets go for Badges with St. John Ambulance First Aid
For a number of meetings, members of the Cromer Air Cadet Squadron have attended the 2nd Sheringham Guide Unit to help the girls achieve their First Aid Badge.
Pilot Officer Brian Keerie RAF VR(T), the Training Officer at 1895 (Cromer) Squadron, and whose wife is one of the Guide Leaders at 2nd Sheringham Unit, was accompanied by Cadet Tammy Glover (14).
Cadet Glover is also studying to earn her St John Ambulance Youth First Aid Award and supported the Guides in their training. She is also participating in her Duke of Edinburgh Award and the visit will be helpful for her to achieve her Service commitment.
During the training, the Guides have covered topics including how to deal with first aid situations, casualty care, CPR, recovery positions, how to deal with shock and many other skills which one day may help them save a life or at least participate in emergencies and be on hand to offer first aid.
Pilot Officer Keerie discussed the joint training effort, “The Guides are attentive, eager to participate and clearly engaged in the training. Cadet Glover is learning, assisting and being a great ambassador for the Air Cadets. All this training will ensure the Guides all become efficient at first aid and this will be of considerable use to them in the future. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
After the Guides earn their badge some may want to continue to learn to earn the St John Youth First Aider Badge.
Make the most of longer days
With the days getting longer, NHS Blood and Transplant is asking people to think about blood donation as they start to make more plans. As Spring starts, winter hibernation can be forgotten - with extended daylight, Bank Holidays and Summer holidays to look forward to. But when you’re planning how you’re going to enjoy 2013, make sure you fit in giving blood. Or if you’ve never done it before, why not book in now?
Blood donations are a vital part of treatment for many conditions including cancer and long term illnesses, people involved in accidents and in maternity care. Hospitals across England and North Wales need 7,000 units of blood every day and each unit can save the lives of up to three people.
Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said: “More daylight makes us all feel better and like we have more time and we’re asking people to think about giving blood as they start to make more plans. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives. We urge regular donors and those who haven’t been for some time to book appointments now. We also need new donors, especially 17-24year-olds, and would encourage people to find out more and sign up.” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

Don’t forget the Dog this Easter! A New Norfolk Guide -
Easter is a time when we traditionally treat ourselves to a chocolate egg or a slice of delicious Simnel Cake. Such treats are intended for us humans to enjoy but do also contain ingredients that are poisonous to our four legged friends.
Chocolate contains Theobromine which is poisonous to dogs and dried fruits are also toxic. Please always consult your vet if you are concerned that your dog has eaten something poisonous.
So why not treat your dog to a tasty Liver Cake this Easter. Go on, they’ll love you for it!
The ingredients you will need for the cake are: 500 grams of flour, 500 grams of raw liver, 4 eggs and a cup of milk.
In a blender, whizz together the liver, eggs and milk until smooth and resembles a bloody milkshake. Pour into a mixing bowl, add the flour and mix well. You’ll end up with a stodgy, gooey mixture. Pour into a greased baking tray, cover and bake at 200 degrees for an hour and a half – two hours, until cooked through. Allow to cool then for the topping combine 100 grams of soft cheese such as Philadelphia with half a teaspoon of honey. Mix well and spread over the cool cake. Decorate with doggie choc drops. Store in the fridge and use within one week. Can be frozen (if it’s not all been eaten!)
From all at Animal Magic Dog Club we wish you a safe and happy Easter.
Dogs Welcome... on the North Norfolk Coast
This new guide from the Appleyards is intended to help all dog owners enjoy their time on the North Norfolk Coast - it is helpful for visitors and residents alike. It covers the entire stretch of the coast from Snettisham to Winterton on Sea, providing lots of useful information, including the best dog friendly pubs, cafes, restaurants, campsites and visitors attractions. It advises on the restrictions applied to dogs on the beaches and promenades at the towns and villages on the coast. It also suggests the best dog walks - many incorporating the Norfolk Coast Path. The book finishes by reminding dog owners to be responsible, by reiterating the parts of the Beach Code and the Coastal Code which relate to dogs. This 64-page A5 book is illustrated with 170 colour photographs - taken by the Appleyards as they walked along the Norfolk Norfolk coast with Archie and Rosie, their two Norfolk Terriers. Steve & Alyson Appleyard have lived on the North Norfolk Coast in East Runton, for the past 12 years.
Editors Note: As a dog owner I was really impressed with this latest book from the Appleyards. It is a comprehensive guide not only to the beaches along the north Norfolk coast, and the restrictions imposed at different times of the year, but also to the coastal pubs, cafes, restaurants and attractions where dogs are just as welcome as their owners! Always nice to stop for refreshment when out on a walk and even nicer when our four legged friends are assured of a welcome too! An essential guide for dogs and their owners visiting our beautiful north Norfolk coast.

That person will win one of the most popular cakes to take home and enjoy.

Aylsham Country Market manager Debra Kidd commented, "We have a fantastic range of cakes every week, from lovely light sponges to wonderful fruit cakes. We thought we would give our customers a chance to try some of those they might not ordinarily buy. At the same time, it will give our hard working producers the opportunity to get some valuable feedback."

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Stephanie has had several phone calls recently from people asking for advice because their cats have been toileting in inappropriate places. Discussing the problem with them she found that in each instance there was no litter tray in the house for the cats’ ablutions. It is important to have a tray, especially with young cats, and at this time of the year as it is difficult for them to “go” outside. Some people are concerned that the litter tray will be smelly but this does not happen if it is cleaned regularly. It also provides an opportunity to identify possible health issues.
When we re-home cats and kittens one of the most important questions we ask of new owners is that they keep their cats in at night and provide them with a litter tray. Keeping cats in at night (especially the very young ones) is as important as providing a litter tray and we recommend this for all cats whether re-homed by us or from another source. A recent instance of this was a cat which came into care because she was “weeing” everywhere who, after just one day, started to use the litter tray and has now been re-homed with no behavioural problems.
Most people are now aware that we microchip all our cats and kittens and the new owner’s details are recorded on-line as soon as possible after they have been re-homed. On occasion we take into care cats that have been micro chipped before joining us and in some instances the owner’s details have never been registered. We have also had instances where the cat has changed hands before joining us and the change of ownership has not been recorded or the owner has moved and not advised the micro chip company of the change. If these cats had gone missing there would have been no way of tracing the owners. If your cat is micro chipped please do make sure that its registration details are up to date.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
Our monthly meeting was held on 5 March, when an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton was followed by an illustrated talk by Dr. Ian Keymer entitled " A Vet's Adventures in Colonial Africa".
Ian spoke mostly about the political and social aspects of living and working in Malawi (then Nyasaland) but also covered his groundbreaking research into the lifecycle of a malarial parasite.
The next meeting will be on 2 April when the speaker will be Jacqui Palmer, the manager of the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, on the subject of “The Heritage of Henry Blogg”.
Many of our new members are introduced by existing members but approaches from other retired, or nearly retired, gentlemen are very welcome. Indeed, there have been 2 such phone calls since the last report.
The hotel has assured us that they have plenty of room for more of us so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend a lunch. There is no obligation to join immediately; come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.
Britian’s third most popular pet is finally finding its feet in the Veterinary consulting room. For our April promotion at Miramar vets we are offering FREE rabbit clinics with our qualified nurses to promote the health and general well-being of these complex creatures. The rabbit’s digestive system is complicated, if not fed the correct diet, rabbits can suffer with serious digestive problems and dental issues for life. Unlimited hay or grass should always be available, with a mixture of fresh leafy green vegetables (the darker the green the better) and a complete pellet type food. Avoid the colourful cereal mix as this promotes selective feeding, resulting in an unbalanced diet. Fresh water from a bowl or bottle should also always be available. Any dietary changes should be made gradually, over several weeks, starting with small amounts of the new food gradually increasing in amounts while decreasing the old food. Rabbit Awareness Week Avoid grass cuttings from lawn mowers as they can lead to severe digestive disturbances. Fruit tree branches make excellent chewing sticks and keep rabbits amused for hours. They May 4th-12th need stimulation, so toys in the form of flower pots and paper towels that they can shred themselves must be available for your rabbit to be content. Cages need to be a MINIMUM of 60x24x24 inches per average rabbit, with a separate sleeping area and living quarters and daily access to a run for exercise. Rabbits should be placed in the hutch at night and covered in the winter months with waterproof covering, where possible take hutches into sheds or garages in wintery weather. In door rabbits still require daily out-door exercise with access to grass to eat and the sunshine for vitamin D production. Clean your rabbit out daily where they toilet, they usually go in one area of the hutch or run, with a thorough weekly clean of all straw and newspaper. Check your rabbit twice a day for signs of flystrike in the summer months. Rabbits may suffer with heatstroke in temperatures above 27˚ shade must be provided in the summer. Rabbits need yearly vaccinations to protect against Myxomatosis and RHD (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) both of which are often fatal. Worming is also an important part of rabbit care, required 2-4 times a year to prevent parasite s such as E. Cuniculi.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GARDENING WITH CHILDREN
Hopefully by the time this article is printed Spring will have arrived and we will be busy in the garden and this is the perfect time to introduce children to the joys of gardening. From the time they can walk they will naturally want to be out in the garden with you and want to join in your activities – digging, helping to push the wheelbarrow, watering crops, adding weeds to the compost, and so on. If you can find them small tools the enjoyment is even greater.
Children need a safe space to play but you can also set aside an area, perhaps a raised bed for them to grow vegetables and flowers of their own. Choose chunky seeds such as nasturtiums which will provide plenty of colour (and introduce them to blackfly) or runner beans which will remind them of Jack and the Beanstalk. Make a colourful sign telling everyone who is the gardener of the plot.
You can also use your time together in the garden to teach your garden about wildlife. Point out how the robin will come down to pick up the worms and insects that are
disturbed. Show how bees and insects pollinate the plants, how frogs and toads eat slugs and snails which might otherwise eat their plants.
You can involve all of the children’s senses: • Smell: Encourage them to smell flowers and herbs. Get them to rub the leaves of herbs and see if they can identify the different smells especially between the different types of mint.
• Taste: Grow vegetables and encourage children to taste fresh peas straight from the pod. Let them pick the first strawberries and raspberries and begin to realise the flavour of fresh fruit.
• Sight: There is so much for children to see in a garden and what a perfect way to learn all about their colours, buttercup yellow, rose red and cornflower blue.
• Sound: The garden is full of noise, the birds singing, the bees buzzing and the wind in the trees so encourage children to listen carefully to everything around them.
• Touch: Children reach out to feel what they see so encourage them to experience different textures outside. Let them feel the rough texture of a runner bean or the warm, smooth skin of a tomato. Just handling the soil and getting dirty is a great lesson in itself. Older children can also be tempted away from their computers if they recognise your enthusiasm.
Why not get them to grow for the local produce show. The Sheringham Horticultural Society’s Carnival Show will be held in August with special classes for children. When the details are finalised full details will be included in this column.
Here are some of the things that children can be encouraged to do right now:
• Fill a large pot with multi purpose potting compost and distribute a dozen dwarf broad bean seeds evenly over the surface. Show them how to push the beans into the compost to about 4cms depth, then cover them and water well.
• Another simple idea is to grow mustard and cress on a sheet of wet kitchen paper on a saucer on the kitchen window. The results are very exciting. If growing both mustard and cress the cress needs to be sown a few days earlier.
Summary
• Encourage children to join in and provide them with their own tools and their own space.
• Help children to experience the wonders of the garden by using all their senses.
• Encourage wildlife into your garden for all round interest.
• Sowing seeds and harvesting are great fun. • A sense of competition with prizes can be a great motivator for older children.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
Barbara Collins from Peterborough was the demonstrator at our March meeting, with her theme “Brighter Days Are Coming”. Barbara’s arrangements were full of bright and colourful Spring flowers such as narcissi, tulips and hyacinths, all of which were then accentuated by the addition of roses, carnations, many varieties of foliage and even herbs. Complemented by a mixture of traditional and unique containers and bases, all of Barbara’s displays were unusual in shape and size and made extremely welcome raffle prizes for six lucky members to enjoy at home.
This was our first meeting in the Club’s new ‘home’, and it went very well indeed. We meet on the first Thursday in the month at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham at 7pm, in time for tea or coffee and a chat, before a 7.30pm start. At our next meeting, on 4 April, we will be having an in-house demonstration. There will be essential supplies for sale, and everyone is invited to bring along a bunch of flowers and ‘have a go’ if they wish. Not all our members are ‘arrangers’, many just have a great love of flowers, and if this sounds familiar, why not come and join us one evening. We are a friendly group and very happy to welcome visitors to come and try us out.

SHERINGHAM IN BLOOM
the future of slimming
Ever wondered how the planters, tubs and hanging baskets keep on blooming each year in our town?
Well, it’s the work of Sheringham In Bloom’s group of local volunteers under the leadership of Joan Thame.
Joan heads a band of people keen to see colour a little bit of nature in Sheringham throughout the year. They have also developed the gardens at the Health Centre, the roundabout, Ottendorf Green and the space at the bottom of Beeston Road. This year a group of Sheringham High School’s students at ‘The Patch’ are getting involved by growing on seedlings and plugs, which will be ready for planting in May.
Or course this work, for the benefit of the town, isn’t without cost and many local traders and businesses are generous with their sponsorship. However, this year we have found that some of the tubs and planters are coming to the end of their usefulness and need replacing.
YOU CAN HELP!!.... by buying a DINGBATS QUIZ sheet for £1 . Answer the ‘batty’ clues and you could win a share of £70.
You can get your copy from The Library, The Tourist Information
WAR REQUIEM
As part of the Gresham’s Britten Centenary Arts Festival, on Sunday 10 March, Gresham’s converted its Sports Hall into a large concert hall to enable more than 300 performers to take part in a spectacular performance of Old Greshamian, Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.
Under the energetic and accomplished direction of Mark Jones, Director of Music at Gresham’s, the Choral Society drew singers from across Norfolk. The Chorus was joined by singers from both the Senior and Prep School and was accompanied by a large Symphony Orchestra made up of sixty guest musicians. An audience of nearly 400 attended what is one of only two

performances of Britten’s epic work in Norfolk this year.
The work began with an atmospheric Requiem Aeternum with tolling bells and shimmering strings. The work is also scored for tenor and baritone soloists and a twelve piece Chamber Orchestra, who work together to intersperse the Mass setting with nine poems by Wilfred Owen. Britten’s evocative musical settings held the audience spellbound and the depth of meaning within the poems was heartrendingly brought to life by the two soloists, tenor Ben Thapa and baritone Robert Davies.
The Dies Irae filled the hall with impressive brass fanfares and the electrifying atmosphere sent shivers down the spines of both performers and listeners alike. From the balcony, the ethereal voices of the Prep School boy choristers joined by the girls’ choir, floated over the heads of the
Shortthorn’s
other performers. The third soloist, Posy Walton- Soprano and vocal coach at Gresham’s, came to the fore particularly in the Lacrimosa and the Libera Me where she managed to soar above both choir and orchestra with her impressive vocal range and timbre. The work ends with all forces combined and the hall was filled with a wall of sound that had the audience clinging to their seats.
What an amazing occasion this was to celebrate the centenary of one of the leading composers of the twentieth century.

St Andrew’s Ladies Association
Members were recently entertained with a talk by a fellow member, Josie Rushing, about her experiences of living for more than 20 years in America, married to an American.
Having been brought up near the American air base at Mildenhall, a society which creates its own mini-America, Josie felt that she knew the country but soon showed her audience the differences in the way of life.
Josie married her American husband in a romantic little chapel at Reno, Nevada, and made her home in Yuba City in Sacramento Valley, California. Her first experience of America was in the month of July when temperatures stayed at around 110 degrees for 11 days! Very soon after they were married, her new husband’s work took him to Japan and Josie had to find her feet in a new country. She enjoyed gardening and found the climate excellent for growing roses, she planted more than 250 trees and bushes. Josie described the beauty of Sacramento Valley, which is sometimes called Del Monte valley because
of the variety of fruits grown – peaches, pineapples, grapes and many other exotic fruits flourish alongside almond and walnut trees. She once had great fun learning to drive a tractor and harvesting showers of walnuts.
Pestered by ‘cold calling’ telephone calls, Josie finally gave in to one company and went along to join their fitness centre where she was soon promoted from a swimmer to an instructor and over time became the deputy director. This led to the opportunity to open another pool for the handicapped and to enjoy the challenges this presented.
She was approached to have her own television programme which went out twice a week and featured her with her pug dog William, sitting in her rose-filled garden talking to the American public about her life in England, with a mention of Sheringham.
More than once she was recognised by fellow residents who had returned home from the base in Mildenhall, people she had met years before around her Suffolk home.
Sheringham History Group
At our March meeting, Dr. John Gardiner gave an informative talk about the history of the Upchers, their lifeboats and their generosity to the Sheringham fishermen.
It was 1826, when the Hon. Charlotte Upcher loaned money to Henry West to build a larger fishing boat which was occasionally used for rescues. This was named The Upcher. When six Sheringham fishermen drowned and Charlotte's daughter died in1836 Mrs. Upcher had the first lifeboat built for Sheringham and named it The Augusta after her

Josie also founded a club to provide company for fellow Brits away from home, The Brit Pack, enjoying many outings to the beautiful Lake Tahoe and The Nappa Valley.
The sad death of her husband and the recent problems in the American economy has resulted in Josie returning to England and settling in Sheringham. Members hope that the British climate and the social life of our small Norfolk town live up to her experiences in America.
The Ladies’ Association has a Fashion Show evening on 9 April at 7.30pm featuring clothes from ‘Whispers’, modelled by members. Refreshments are included in the entry price of £3.50 and a raffle will take place. All proceeds from the evening will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
If you would like to join us for a varied programme of talks and social evenings you would be most welcome. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month. For further information please contact Chrissy on 01263 822807.
daughter. It was thought the Augusta saved 1,000 lives and served 56 years.
The Augusta was replaced by The Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat in 1894 built by Lewis 'Buffalo' Emery. HRU's most famous rescue was the crew of the shipwreck, The Ispolen, 1897. HRU was launched for the last time on VJ day 1945. Incredibly, it has been preserved and can be seen at the Fisherman's Heritage Centre on the slipway, Sheringham. Mr. Gardiner ended his talk by asking for volunteers to work at The Fishermen’s Heritage Centre to replace retiring members. It is staffed entirely by volunteers who talk to visitors from all over the world about Sheringham's heritage.

Reach new heights with EACH
Thrill-seekers will once again have the opportunity to scale new heights for charity as East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) offers fundraisers the opportunity to abseil down one of Norwich’s tallest buildings.

EACH has launched a charity abseil event today which will see participants descend 150ft down the Norfolk Tower. It’s one of the city’s tallest buildings offering participants breathtaking views across the whole of Norwich.
The abseil is very kindly supported by MAHB landlords of the Norfolk Tower, who have again offered EACH the use of the building free of charge.
The event, once again being managed by the Norfolk Army Cadet Force, will take place at The Norfolk Tower, Surrey Street, Norwich on Sunday April 14 between 10am and 4pm. It costs £25 to register and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. Only 60 places are available and are expected to be taken quickly.

the abseil event. It was a fantastic event last year and quite unique - scaling one of the tallest buildings in Norwich City Centre. There are limited places available and I would encourage people to get involved, take part and raise funds for local children and their families.”

said “We’re really looking forward to the abseil.
We ran it for the first time last year and it was a great success. To have the support of Matt and MAHB in giving us free use of the building once again is absolutely fantastic – we raised an incredible amount last year and we are looking to increase on it this year.
“To deliver our services this year we need to raise £5.75 million which amounts to £15,000 a day, every day of the year and events such as this will go a long way in helping us achieve this figure. With only 60 places available we expect demand to once again be high so I would urge anyone interested in the abseil to sign up as soon as possible.”

Councillors support £60,000 grant to Sheringham Sports Association
North Norfolk District Councillors (NNDC) have welcomed a £60,000 grant to Sheringham Sports Association to help with its plans to secure a multi-sport facility and alterations to the pavilion to improve disabled access.
The £60,000 was secured by the District Council from Tesco in lieu of a like-for-like playing pitch which formed part of the original Tesco planning permission for the new Sheringham Community Centre. The District Council ring-fenced the funds for community use in Sheringham, passing responsibility for the final decision as to where the money would be best spent to the Town Council. The award to the Sports Association was made by Sheringham Town Council at its meeting on 12 March.
NNDC Deputy Leader and member for Sheringham South, Rhodri Oliver, one of NNDC’s two representatives on the Sports Association said, “I am delighted that after all our hard work the Sports Association has taken a massive step towards securing more sports facilities for people in the town. So many volunteers have put in a huge amount of time and hard work into this and it is great that it has paid off.”
Cllr Richard Shepherd, the second NNDC representative and also Member for Sheringham South said, “The Town Council made the right decision last night in giving this money to a vital community group in our town. I would like to thank all the people who made this possible, particularly Charles Sanders, the Association Chairman.” Sheringham Independent 364 March 30th 2013

A Little Help from Boyer's
Boyer’s Body Centre Limited can be found opposite the Amazona Zoo entrance, off Hall Road, Cromer. The business was conceived by the entrepreneurial Matthew Boyer, a very Norfolk lad, who saw a gap in the market for a quality, professional - yet friendly – vehicle body repair service. Being the largest vehicle body repair facility north of Norwich, Boyer’s encompasses the type of traditional business values seldom seen today. From the restoration of classic to repair of present day vehicles, Matthew takes great pride in providing a first class service that ensures repeat clientele. "In a little over the two years I have been operating, I am astonished at the support of the local community. In this current difficult business environment I have been surprised and indeed overwhelmed by the loyalty of my clientele base. I am very grateful" says Matthew.
Calls for action from Vodafone
North Norfolk Labour Party is calling on Vodafone to resolve problems affecting signals across north Norfolk - with reports of long-running issues affecting areas as widespread as Sheringham, Mundesley, Cromer, and North Walsham. Last year the local Labour Party had written to all phone providers calling for an improvement in communications infrastructure, and to ensure that there is a push to provide 3G signal in towns, and a decent signal for calls elsewhere. Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Limited (CTIL) representing O2 and Vodafone have since responded encouraging the district council to meet with the company to work together to meet these aims. However, in the shorter term, there is an urgent need from Vodafone to now resolve on-going problems affecting customers across the district with customers taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Reports of signal problems has stretched from Cromer to Mundesley and Sheringham to North Walsham. The party is now writing to Vodafone calling for urgent action - particularly as many local businesses who rely on mobile phones are losing trade as a result of the on-going issues.

Dear Margaret
How can anyone be so negative about so many sections of the NHS as the "grumpy old man". Let me put the other side of the situation... Firstly GPs provide primary care. Hospitals provide secondary care where that is needed. Cromer Hospital is far from a " very posh clinic". It is a modern hospital built for the modern day, as nowadays many treatments do not require an overnight stay but do need secondary care and once this is given patients are far more comfortable in their own homes. I - and many others - attend there for life prolonging treatment. On a regular basis many patients attend, as I do, for blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks. This definitely relieves the strain on the Weybourne Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is incredibly busy. Patients come from some distance to get their transfusions as this is a treatment which cannot be unduly delayed. There are numerous other specialities at Cromer Hospital including haematology, ophthalmology, renal, ENT and rheumatology, where consultants visit and many varied treatments and appointments are offered. The nursing staff are responsible for some very complex treatments and are highly skilled in their roles. All the remaining staff at Cromer Hospital do their utmost to care for their patients and help in any way they can. Finally, not all GP surgeries send their patients to Cromer Hospital for blood tests. Many employ phlebotomists/nurses who take blood samples at their surgery premises and this can avoid unwell patients having to make that journey to Cromer. Regards Rosie, North Walsham
Dear Margaret
I have just read the article from the Grumpy Old Man regarding Cromer and Norwich and Norfolk University Hospitals. There was one important thing he didn’t mention and that is Eye Surgery. At Cromer Hospital if you have an appointment to see the consultant in the morning you can return to have an operation the same afternoon. The service is excellent and I believe only happens at Cromer. However I do agree that it would be helpful to patients if car parking was, for example, 50p for 30 minutes as this would encourage people to use the car park. Yours sincerely Maureen, North Walsham

Dog Fouling Unfortunately we have had a lot of complaints again regarding people not clearing up after their dogs. We ask you all to take pride in Sheringham and clear up after your dogs. They do not deserve the bad name they are getting and soon there will be dog exemption areas if the situation continues. We love our dogs and do not want this to happen. PLEASE clear up after your dogs. Kind regards Avril & Judith, Sheringham Enhancement Group
Dear Margaret
Would you please convey my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all family and friends who celebrated Tony's (Lambert) life on 16 January after his sudden death on Christmas Eve. The North Norfolk Railway did him proud with a steam run to Holt and supplied all the wonderful food & drink with so many volunteers working that day. Special thanks on that day must go to David Boardman who cleared the snow from Upper Sheringham Church and then was on the train serving drinks. Special thanks also to Nessa & Peter and Father Phil and of course Blyth & Sons. Donations were collected for East Anglian Air Ambulance and The North Norfolk Railway raising an amazing £1018 for each. Thank you to all. George, David, Paul & Rachel

Adventure Playground
The children at the Gresham’s Pre-Prep have been enjoying playing on a brand new climbing frame in their adventure playground. The old climbing frame had been out of use for a number of months and it was therefore with great excitement that the children watched the old climbing frame being removed and the new one being built.
The new climbing frame was funded by a donation from The Gresham’s Foundation, a donation from a Charitable Trust, a contribution from the School and money raised by the Pre-Prep Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
An official opening ceremony took place at the end of February and the children have been putting the climbing frame to good use!
Gresham’s Pre-Prep in Holt offers a Nursery School alongside the Pre-Prep School. For further information please contact Mrs Julie Higgs, preprep@greshams.com or tel 01263 714575. Open Day is on Monday 6th May.

Questions asked about the announcement of additional ambulances in Norfolk
North Norfolk Labour Party ‘cautiously’ welcomed a decision from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to put five additional ambulances on the road in Norfolk – including additional hours in Cromer – but have criticised management for the fact that none were in action on the day they were meant to start operating.
The Labour Party launched the ‘Act on Ambulances’ campaign last year following reports that cuts were taking away doublestaffed ambulances at the main bases of Cromer and North Walsham. Campaigners have argued with MPs and health officials that more ambulances were needed, and that 26
resorting to Rapid Response Vehicles would not improve response times.
Now the East of England Ambulance Service Trust has announced five more will run in Norfolk – but it is currently dependent on ambulance staff doing the overtime to run them. In the first week it was reported none of those additional ambulances were running.
Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “While we cautiously welcomed the announcement last month, we still continue to have concerns about the service north Norfolk is getting, especially as none of these additional ambulances were actually on the road days after the announcement.
When we met both the previous and current chief executives of the trust, they were adamant they could not fund extra resources without making cuts elsewhere. So how is this being funded given the government cuts hitting the service, and for how long will it last?”

Delight as partial bus service is returned to Sunway Park Sheringham After making representations and penning letters, Sheringham Councillors, Richard Shepherd and Rhodri Oliver welcomed the move by Sanders Coaches to partially reinstate a bus service that was lost from Sunway Park late last year.
Previously the service up to Sunway Park from the centre of Sheringham had been reduced to once an hour. This made it difficult for many people who needed to take home their shopping as they either had to wait a long time or make the considerable journey by foot. However a number 22 bus will now ensure that on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays they will be a half hourly service for people in and around Sunway Park. This will be of great benefit to traders in the town by making it more accessible for residents and allow the residents to enjoy some of the flexibility they used to have. NNDC Deputy Leader and member for Sheringham South, Rhodri Oliver said ‘It caused real concern to residents that many of the older people in the area around Sunway Park were no longer going to have the same access to public transport as they had in the past. Many people were going to struggle to get their shopping up the hill when they had shopped in town or further afield. I am incredibly pleased with the constructive response we have had from Charles Sanders on this matter and the way he took account of residents’ views.’ Cllr Richard Shepherd, also Member for
Sheringham South said “Bus services are vital for people in rural areas in North Norfolk and this move by Sanders in Sheringham is a step in the right direction for everyone.”
Charles Sanders, CEO of Sanders Coaches said ‘As a locally focused family business employing over 100 local people we will do all we can to provide the best services to our community. Unfortunately in a time of great austerity and rising fuel costs it is not always easy. However we are delighted we can provide the new 22 service Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays which will enhance services to Sunway Park and connections to many other routes. Full details of this and all our other services are on our website www.sanderscoaches.com
Kelling Primary School Celebrates World Book Day
This year's World Book Day saw Kelling Primary School transformed into the most exciting children's literary adventure. Normal lessons were suspended as the school celebrated with a day of book-related activities including a second-hand book sale at the end of school. Children arrived at school to find the teachers dressed as The Snow Queen, Pocahontas and Bertie Wooster. The children themselves had each chosen their character for the day ranging from The Cat in the Hat, Where’s Wally and Buzz Lightyear to Mary Poppins, Astrid from How to Train a Dragon and Wilbur the pig from Charlotte’s Web. Prizes were awarded for the most thoughtful costumes to Luke Caistor, Ava Weston and Kezia Ball.
HEADS AHEAD Ladies & Gents Hair Designers

Mr Platt said ‘This World Book Day was the school's best ever. All the children and staff had a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see everyone working together to celebrate their love of books”.

NORTH NORFOLK COMMUNITY TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION NWACTA Changes its Name
It was in 1999 that the community transport operation based in North Walsham to serve sections of North East Norfolk was created, and its full title was North Walsham Area Community Transport Association (NWACTA).
In the course of the last dozen years our operations have extended into a much wider area. It was in 2004 that our sister organization, based in Holt, had to cease operations and NWACTA took on the provision of their services. In subsequent years, we have also taken over the community transport provided by other organizations that were unable to continue. We are currently exploring how to further extend the area we serve, particularly in a westerly direction. It means that for some time we could more accurately have been described as the North Norfolk Community Transport Association, which is the title that the Trustees have now adopted.
One reason for informing you about the change of name now is that Waitrose have very kindly agreed that in April we will be one of the three charities that it will support. (Waitrose is a popular destination for some of our passengers.) We would be delighted and grateful if your readers would put their green discs in the container labelled North Norfolk Community Transport Association.
We are in the process of improving our fleet. We have just taken on two new vehicles; a Mercedes 16 seater mini-bus and a Kia Seconda mpv (generously financed by Victory Housing some of whose tenants travel with us) which we can use when a small vehicle is more suitable than a minibus. Both are fully accessible. We would like to remind readers that we provide a range of services:
Your Orchestra Needs You!
Did you use to play a musical instrument and regret giving it up? Have you got a violin gathering dust in the attic or a trombone hidden away in the corner of the garage? If so, why not come along to Cromer High School from 7-9pm on a Monday evening. Cromer Chamber Orchestra is a friendly group of amateur musicians who meet during term time to enjoy playing a variety of musical styles ranging from Mozart to Les Misérables. New players are always most welcome, no audition is necessary and there are no age restrictions our youngest player is 14 and our oldest 86! Why not come along and rediscover the enjoyment that playing a musical instrument brings!
Our dial-a-bus services are door-to-door and take people to the various market towns; we provide group transport for charity and community organisations to take their members to meetings or on excursions; we have a car service to take people to medical 4appointments both to hospitals and to doctors’ surgeries and for other medical purposes.
To learn more, access our new web-site at northnorfolkcommunitytransport.co.uk on which you can also make bookings if you wish. Most people still prefer to email us at admin.nnct@ btconnect.com or phone us on either 01263 839009 or 01692 500840.
We are keen to know of new passengers and places in North Norfolk which are currently without transport services that we might be able to supply. We are able to help all age-groups who are without public transport at the times or to the destinations they need so if readers know of gaps please let us know so that we can look for ways of filling them.
We look forward to serving many more of North Norfolk’s residents.
We would particularly like to hear from string and brass players who have reached Grade V standard and above.
If you are interested in joining us or would like further details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.

CYCLE RIDE ACROSS IRELAND FOR CHARITY!
This Easter a local family of three are planning to burn off their Easter Eggs by getting on their bikes to support two local organisations. The photo shows Keith and Jali Packer and Lara Williamson at the Norfolk Cycling Academy in Norwich in training for their planned ride coast to coast across Ireland from Dublin to Galway - about 150 miles. “Even the preparation is proving to be a challenge” says Lara, “Every time we try and get out on the bikes it seems to snow or sleet!” But they’re looking forward to getting fit and tackling the peatlands of the middle of Ireland, and all in aid of two very worthwhile causes. Funds raised will be shared
between Cruse Bereavement Care and Hindolveston Community Gym. Cruse offers free support from trained workers to any adults or children in Norfolk who are finding it difficult to move forward following the death of someone close, and it relies entirely on local voluntary fundraising to continue to offer its free service. Judy who runs the Hindolveston Gym says “We’re proud to be associated with Keith, Jali and Lara's challenge. Our gym is non-profit making and relies on the community in order to continue offering a local, affordable amenity where our members can work on staying active, flexible and fit.
Good luck to them on their trip!”
To donate (any amount small or large will be gratefully received) call Cruse on 01603 219977 or go online to
localgiving.com/charity/crusenorwich/ project/new-project-the-irish-challenge .
Alternatively pop in to the Hindolveston Gym in the Village Hall on a Monday evening (6-9pm) or a Friday morning (9.30am-1.30pm) and ask to add your name on the sponsorship form. The plan is to complete the cycle between 9-11 April and collect all sponsorship by the end of that month.
