A Perfect Day for a Classic Country Drive
The annual St Geroge’s Day ‘Drive it Day’, organised by the North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club, set off just after 10 am in bright sunshine and virtually no wind on Sunday April 21st. Near perfect conditions could mean a record number of entries, something over 250 Classic Vehicles all raising money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, hoping to exceed last year’s £3000. They use Station Car Park as it is by far the largest car park in North Norfolk. There is a choice of two routes of about 45 miles for the drivers, both wending their way to the beautiful park setting of Hoveton Hall Gardens near Wroxham. All the cars, trucks, bikes were waved on their way to Hoveton Hall by Mayor of Sheringham Cllr Doug Smith and Sheringham’s own Town Crier Tony Nelson. Future Car & Bike Events June 9th - Classic Car & Bikes (organised by The Lobster) July 22nd - Show & Shine at Sheringham Golf Club (part of Sheringham Carnival) July 27th - Harley Davidson Ride Out (organised by The Lobster) September 1st - Summer Fair at Beeston Regis Caravan Park (in association with ‘About with Friends’) There are many more events organised throughout Norfolk - go to Club website www.nncvc.org.uk for more details.

Shell Gallery Celebrates Peter Coke’s Centenary
3rd April was the 100th anniversary of the birth of Peter Coke, actor and playwright, famous for his role as Paul Temple in the popular vintage radio series. Peter took the Victorian art of shell craft to new heights of inventiveness, sophistication and variety. Almost 200 of his stunning shell sculptures, made from shells from all over the world, are on display in the Shell Gallery on West Cliff in Sheringham which bears his name.
Peter Coke started to collect antiques at an early age. Later, in his antique shop in Sharrington Hall, near Holt, he had a number of Sailor Valentines, eight-sided arrangements of shells which 18th century sailors were said to have made on the return journey from the West Indies for their wives and girlfriends back home (though often they bought them ready made). During visits to friends in Barbados he was able to collect shells to repair examples which were damaged, and from this he progressed to making reproductions of
Sailor Valentines. This led to a fascination with the amazing variety of shapes and colours in which seashells, especially from tropical waters, are found.
Having collected shells as a hobby for many years, and having experimented with various ways of using them decoratively, he spent increasing amounts of his time in this activity until, in his early 80s, he was persuaded by friends to mount the first of what became a series of exhibitions of his work in London. These were a great success, with about half the pieces on display usually being sold at prices far greater than he had originally imagined. His work has been purchased by many well-known customers in the arts and entertainments world and by members of the royal family. Eventually, he turned his antiques showroom into a shell-art gallery and devoted all his time to his art. He continued working daily on his shell sculptures until just before his death in July 2008 at the age of 95.The quantity and variety of his output is amazing. His work ranges from two-dimensional geometric arrangements, such as the Sailor Valentines ,to shell pictures in the Chinese style, to shell encrusted boxes, obelisks and figures and finely detailed model garden scenes in three dimensions. All the colours are natural – unlike many Victorian predecessors he did not artificially colour his shells.
Holt Bowls Club
With warmer weather finally arriving why not have some fun by trying out the game of bowls.
Holt Bowls Club is having an Open Day on Saturday 11 May at 1.30 pm. People of all age groups would be welcome and a pair of flat soled shoes is all that is required. Tuition will be given.
Shell artistry is an unusual art-form and there are currently very few practitioners of this art-form in Britain, though some are to be found in the United States, and it will probably become increasingly rare as time progresses, partly because of difficulties in sourcing the shells.
Before his death, Peter Coke had hoped for some time that, instead of being dispersed to collectors, a substantial body of work representing the range of his output would be available for the public to see. After spending two years searching for a venue which was large enough to house the collection, the opportunity arose to base it in part of the former longshore fishermen’s sheds at Westcliff, Sheringham, restored by Sheringham Preservation Society and approximately 12 miles from his home.
Most of Peter’s collection is permanently on display, with some variation from year to year. The Gallery is open from 12 to 4pm each day (subject to volunteer availability) from 4 May to 30 September (and the school Easter and Autumn half term holidays).

THE JUBILEE PLAYERS - CALENDAR GIRLS
The all female cast members of our summer production are hoping that the weather will warm up by June, when they will be performing ‘Calendar Girls’ by Tim Firth, at The Tithe Barn in Horstead.
The play is based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund. When Annie’s husband, John, dies of Leukaemia, she and best friend, Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four other WI members to pose nude with them and news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire. The calendar is a huge success but the new found fame has unexpected consequences for the women involved.
Based on the film released in 2003, ‘Calendar Girls’ became the fastest selling play in British theatre history when it was first performed in 2008. The amateur performing rights have now been released for a limited period and will raise further funds for The Leukaemia Research Fund.
The Jubilee Players are delighted to be one of the amateur groups granted the license to perform and hope you will join us for an evening guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and come out singing ‘Jerusalem’! Please note that we are extending our performances to Saturday for this production. Book early to avoid disappointment!
‘Calendar Girls’ will be performed from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th June at The Tithe Barn, Horstead 7.30pm. All tickets £6.00 from Carol White, The Forge, Horstead. Tel: 01603 737665

Sheringham Society Coffee Mornings
Our last coffee morning in St. John Hall was an intriguing talk on the history of magic by Bischop Peter Fox, a former Bishop of Samoa. He told us all about the history of magic through the ages and gave some extremely clever examples. It was a most entertaining morning.
From now on the coffee mornings will be on the last Thursday of the month as usual but in St. Joseph's Church Hall in the Cromer Road. The next talk will be by Barry Walker Moore, a bee keeper who will be telling us all about bee keeping and has promised to bring along some bees. This is, of course, a most important time for bees with many people trying to persuade the Government to ban certain pesticides which appear to be very harmful to bees.
There is plenty of parking for people behind the hall. Doors open at 10.15am and the talks begin at 10.30am. As usual, admission is £2 which includes tea or coffee and home-made cakes. All are welcome, so please do come along. You may learn quite a lot.

Sheringham Shantymen to manage Oddfellows Hall
Sheringham’s Oddfellows Hall is to be run by the Sheringham Shantymen over the summer, as they take on a temporary licence of the historic property from its owners, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).
Oddfellows Hall, which was built in 1867 and looks out over Lifeboat Plain in Sheringham, has a long association with the sea, serving as the first RNLI station for the town and as a meeting place for fishermen. Following problems with the slip-way the lifeboat station moved in 1901 and the hall became associated with the Independent Order of Oddfellows, a benevolent charity that provided an early form of medical insurance for residents, including members of the local fishing community, before the creation of the National Health Service. Bought by the Oddfellows in 1931, they sold it in 1947 and from 1948 to 1960 it was used as a shoe factory, after which it was purchased by Sheringham Urban District Council.

Sheringham Springs into Cinema
New releases, late night horror, local locations and the return of Saturday morning Kids Club in lottery funded programme revamp
Cinema going in north Norfolk will be transformed in May when Sheringham Little Theatre takes a big leap forwards to launch Spring into Cinema. Thanks to a £5,250 grant from the British Film Institute through the National Lottery and a £1,500 contribution from Norfolk Country Cottages, this much-loved community arts venue can considerably enhance its cinema programme. This will enable the theatre to show more of the latest releases, more vintage classics, introduce a new Saturday morning kids club and a season of Friday late-night horror screenings. There will also be both adult and teenage film clubs enabling people to be more involved in the cinema as well as opportunities to join in with discussions and learning opportunities.
Sheringham Little Theatre Director Debbie Thompson commented, ‘It’s a real thrill to be able to introduce these new developments for people in Sheringham and North Norfolk. Alongside the increased number of new release films, I’m also pleased that we shall be featuring films with local connections
a rare chance to see the full 144 minute uncut version of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic The Shining starring Jack Nicholson. The morning of Saturday 11 May finds the launch of the weekly Kids Club. Before a screening of Gene Wilder’s original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (U) Bo Nanafana and Hocus Pocus Theatre will be on hand with opportunities to meet the Oompa-Loompas and the Bucket Grandparents, to help young film fans make a giant lollipop and design their own Wonka Bar – and someone will win the Golden Ticket!
Later in the day The Vintage Film Club launches, perfect for a sedentary Saturday afternoon. On offer is the wonderful Breakfast At Tiffany’s (PG) starring Audrey Hepburn followed by afternoon tea and musical accompaniment from DJ78, spinning an eclectic selection of popular music on his twin 1930s HMV wind-up gramophones.
regularly, more provision for children and young people and some late night horror for the brave!’ Debbie continued ‘We also really want to hear which films and types of films people want to see and joining the new film clubs is an ideal way for them to tell us’.
Throughout May there will be special events to launch Spring into Cinema. On 7 May there will be a special introduced screening of the critically acclaimed new film A Late Quartet (15) starring Christopher Walken and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Preceding the film and introduction a live string quartet will perform at a VIP reception. Other launch activities include the first Late Night Horror show on Friday 10 May with
The following week Cinema Memories (18 May) is a special presentation from Cinema Plus, the education programme at Norwich’s Cinema City. Their project Norfolk at the Pictures aims to capture, share and preserve the heritage of 100 years of cinema-going in the county. At this free event senior archivist Jane Alvey of The East Anglian Film Archive will introduce films about Norfolk cinemas in years gone by and attendees will be invited to share their memories, photographs, memorabilia and films. The building that is now Sheringham Little Theatre itself first showed silent movies in 1914 (then Sheringham Town Hall) later becoming The Picture House and Empire Cinema before becoming The Little Theatre in 1960.
Norfolk based Director Tony Britten will be in Sheringham to introduce his recent films, set and filmed in Norfolk. In Love With Alma Cogan (12A) starring Roger Lloyd-Pack and Niamh Cusack shows on 19 May and his latest, Benjamin Britten: Peace and Conflict (cert tbc) with John Hurt, can be seen on 26 May.

his opponents with difficulties. He was only a single victory away from the next stage but could not quite grasp the points he needed, and this led to his elimination. Again, he can be pleased with his final placing 79th in a total entry of 114. Johnny fared less well in his second poule, lacking some fine technique to press
In reality, nothing could have been further from the truth. Clare Mawson from Melton Constable in Norfolk, making her first foray into any form of competitive fencing, took part in the tough Senior Girls’ Foil Competition. She fought with grit and determination avoiding the first round of elimination to demonstrate a cool head when dealing with opponents with much more experience. She was, unfortunately, knocked out in the first round of the direct elimination section of the event, but not before giving her, highly seeded, opponent a great deal to think about. She should be delighted with her final placing of 28th in a total entry of 39.
Pictured Humphrey Ho (without helmet)
Many schools, such as Millfield and Shrewsbury, have fencing clubs with forty or more participants and a long tradition of dominating this event. Therefore, it was a brave decision after only two terms of fencing at Gresham’s to send participants, bearing in mind the very real possibility of a whitewash.
The following day saw Olivier Johnson from Salthouse in Norfolk and Johnny Willcox from Heydon in Norfolk participate in the Mount-Haes foil competition, the youngest age category available. Short of recent training time both wobbled a little in their initial poule fights, but avoided elimination in the first cut. In his second poule Olivier fought cleverly and turned his slight build to an advantage, providing many of
home the advantage, although he again should be encouraged by a final placing of 87th of a field of 114.
On the same day Humphrey Ho, the quiet man of the group, tackled the Junior Foil event. The foil is not Humphrey’s favoured weapon but he seemed to enjoy making short work of many of his opponents in his first and second poule
rounds, easily qualifying for the knock-out section of the competition. He automatically earned a place in the last thirty-two of the event, thanks to his numerous victories earlier and his first opponent seemed to be unable to read Humphrey’s attacks, leading to a 15-7 victory. This saw Humphrey through to the last 16, where his next opponent proved to be a tougher nut to crack. Using a more physical style than Humphrey he made greater stamina tell, allowing him to defeat the Greshamian 15-9. Nevertheless, Humphrey’s final placing of 15th from a field of 119 is highly creditable. After a long journey back to Holt from Crystal Palace that evening, and another early morning on Thursday Humphrey was again in fine form for the Junior Sabre, his favoured weapon. Again, victory in most of the poule matches appeared easy and he went through to the knock out stages. An early draw against the sixth seeded fencer saw Humphrey upset the odds with a convincing victory, which saw him through to the final 16. His next opponent was skilled, but unfortunately not skilled enough, and Humphrey won through to the final 8. However, his next opponent had fenced at international level and in a nail-biting fight Humphrey was defeated 15-13, which saw him exit. At the time of writing his placing is not certain, but he will be at least eighth in an entry of 75.
Mr Hall, Fencing coordinator at Gresham’s would like to thank all fencers involved for their hard work and willingness to travel a long distance, and Mr Stimpson for his excellent coaching thus far this year. The coming terms will, without doubt, see fencing at Gresham’s go from strength to strength.
Cruse Bereavement Receives £1,500 from Tesco
As part of the Sheringham Community fund, Tesco is giving a grant to Cruse Bereavement Care in Norwich. The grant will allow Cruse to continue providing counselling and support services to adults and children dealing with the loss of a loved one. The money will be used to train more volunteers as counsellors.
Cruse Bereavement provides support in a range of ways from a telephone helpline to one to one free home visits. Last year Cruse provided 1183 free one to one counselling sessions and answered 623 phone calls. Many individuals are referred to Cruse by their GPs. However, many have also heard about Cruse from their friends or come across 14
the service on the internet.
Linda Jeckells, who received support from Cruse, had this to say “The grief hit me like a ton of weight when I lost my father in 2010. I couldn’t think straight or work. Cruse helped me turn the corner and I don’t know what I would have done without them.”
People like Linda have been helped by a team of dedicated volunteers like Ann Barnard. The enthusiasm for the services Cruse provides is also reflected in its dedicated team of volunteers.
Ann Barnard, a former nurse, drives hundreds of miles to carry out assessments and
appointments. She said “I’ve always helped people and volunteering gives me the satisfaction my job used to. At Cruse you can see you do make a real difference.”
Simon Petar, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, said: “We are pleased our grant will allow Cruse to train more volunteers. There are a number of people on the waiting list who would greatly benefit from the support and comfort that Cruse provides.”
Tesco has set up the Sheringham Community Fund which will give out small grants of up to £1,500 from a pool of £50,000 over the next two years.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
While pregnant mums and mums with kittens are in our care, we give them extra attention. It is important to make sure that the mother cat receives additional food both while pregnant and once the kittens are born, so that she has sufficient milk to feed the kittens to ensure they are healthy and will thrive. As a general rule we are guided by the mother cat as to how much food she needs.
When a pregnant cat comes into care, we always check for fleas and worms and the ideal time to treat her is before she has her kittens. However it is important that we use the correct products as some should not be used and our vets recommend those which are suitable. Because worms are passed to the kittens via the mother’s milk, treating mum while pregnant creates a lesser problem once the kittens are born. Treatment for kittens also depends on their age or weight and the products used. This applies for both flea and worm treatments and, again, some products are not suitable, so veterinary advice is/should always be sought.
We often see kittens offered for homing at 6 weeks old. This is far too young as they have not built up their own immunity. Kittens do on occasion come into care without their mother at this age but they are kept separate from other cats until they have had their first vaccination. Although this does not provide full immunity, it does give them some protection should there be other cats in their new home. If both kittens and mum are still with us when the kittens are nine weeks old, we will get the mum neutered (she may have already started to call again) and also blood tested to ensure she is not FIV or FELV positive. She will then be vaccinated and micro chipped so that she is available for re-homing. Providing the blood test is negative for mum and she is healthy, we can assume the kittens will be too.
LOST IN SHERINGHAM Two sets of keys on Saturday 23 March Anyone with any information please ring 01263 711611 Thanks Although this is our normal routine, sometimes things do not go as planned. Pregnancy is not always straightforward and there have been occasions when the cat has had to be rushed to the vets for a caesarean (you can guarantee the norm for this is at night when the emergency vet is on duty), which is an expensive operation. The kittens may be in distress as a consequence and very often some do not survive. For poor little mum, very often still just a kitten herself, this is quite likely to be her first experience of motherhood and now safely with us, will thankfully be the last.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER AN ELECTRIFIED DANDELION
Investigating a flash of yellow on a vacant building plot I found a clump of unusual, seemingly malformed daffodils. Looking through old bulb catalogues I found one photograph that gave me a possible identification and some research on the internet confirmed that the variety I had found was Narcissus ‘Van Sion’, also known as ‘Telamonious Plenus’. One American website stated ‘When people ask us to identify a double daffodil they have found in an old garden, a vacant lot, or way out in the middle of nowhere, it most often turns out to be ‘Van Sion’’. It seems that this daffodil has been around for centuries and it is
so tough that it multiplies where many other daffodils can’t even survive. It evidently never gets basal rot but does sometimes produce seed pods and any seeds may germinate in grassy areas and produce new clumps.
What makes identification difficult is that it is so variable. It has been quite accurately described as a fairly mad and electrified dandelion. It is said that cattle never eat it and that rodents leave it alone which probably explains how it has survived the local muntjac deer.
The first spring after the bulbs are bought from a supplier they will bloom with all the doubling neatly contained within the trumpet. But that is the first spring and every year after that the same bulbs will produce quite different blooms – shaggy powder -puffs with no sign of a trumpet and in some years or some gardens they will be heavily marked with green or they will open gnarled or imperfect. They may be weirdly charming but they are not the sort of bloom most people would want to see in their well kept flower beds.
E.A.Bowles, the famous gardener wrote about this daffodil in 1934 ‘Its first appearance in England is first chronicled by Parkinson who
tells us in the Paradisus that Vincent Sion, ‘borne in Flanders, dwelling on the Bank side (London) in his lives time but now dead, an industrious and worthy lover of faire flowers cherished it in his garden for many years without the bearing of any flowers until the year 1620’. Another gardener A.M.Kirby wrote in 1907 that ‘it is not only the most important of all doubles, but probably the most important of all varieties, single or double’. This variety has been used, especially in New Zealand, for breeding many of the double varieties we buy today.
So here we have growing on a site in Sheringham, soon to be developed, one of the most historically important and unusual daffodils. Hopefully it will survive the builders and pop up in future years to surprise the new householders.
The new bulb catalogues are arriving now, so make a note of any narcissi you want for next year and get the orders off nice and early. There are certainly plenty to choose, from the historical varieties such as Van Sion at £1 a bulb right up to this year’s modern show quality daffodils which can cost over £25 a bulb. Bob Wilkinson
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
The April meeting took place on 2 April at the Links Hotel in West Runton, where the members enjoyed another excellent lunch, followed by an interesting talk by Jacqui Palmer, manager of the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, on the subject of “The Heritage of Henry Blogg”.
Jacqui told the story of a particular rescue involving the barge Sepoy in 1933 which illustrated the skill, bravery and leadership of Henry Blogg. She went on to talk about some of the education and research work in which the museum is involved before taking questions which tended towards the current operation of the RNLI.
The next meeting, on 7 May, will feature a presentation by Stephen Scott-Fawcett entitled “Everest to the South Pole”. This will be an opportunity for members to invite lady guests and will conclude the programme of talks for the current “club” year. The AGM will be held in June followed by a new programme which will commence in July. More details of this will be announced soon.
Recent new members have found us a friendly bunch so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend a lunch. There is no obligation to join immediately - come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.

Reepham Festival secures rising roots star for 2013
Reepham 13 Summer Music Festival organisers have secured a prestigious addition to this year’s roster of artists, with the announcement that rising folk-roots star and BBC award-nominated Luke Jackson will be performing over the weekend of 10th and 11th August.
Just eighteen years old but with a bold, show-stopping voice and honed guitar skills, Luke is a confident and captivating performer demonstrating an impressive maturity. He has been making ripples on the thriving acoustic scene supporting such luminaries as Show of Hands, Paul Brady, Steve Knightley, Martyn Joseph and Boo Hewerdine and he has played the prestigious folk and roots festivals at Sidmouth, Bristol, Shrewsbury and Trowbridge.
Championed by the likes of Bob Harris, Simon Mayo and Mike Harding, his debut album ‘More Than Boys’ has received plaudits from critics and airplay on numerous radio stations.
Luke says, looking forward to the August weekend in Reepham, ‘It’s so much fun playing festivals because every one of them has its own vibe and feeling. I am very much looking forward to playing at Reepham Festival this year - let’s hope the sun comes out!’
Reepham festival chairman Steve Jenkins says ‘Each year we aim to provide a wide, eclectic and exciting range of music and entertainment, and 2013 is no exception. We’re really pleased to welcome Luke to Reepham. It’s good to be associated with a rising star and it looks as if this will be a case of ‘remember where you saw him first’!’
Headlining will be masters of rhythm and blues Dr Feelgood, that most perennially popular of the legendary R & B bands. Monster of rock Buster James is back by popular demand and there will be around fifteen hours of music for
all tastes on the Saturday with a full afternoon’s music on the Sunday.
The now-famous twin stage in the main arena minimises the time between bands so that the entertainment continues without a break from mid-day on the Saturday through to the evening. Hot and cold food and drink will be available throughout.
The festival atmosphere continues on the Sunday afternoon when well-known local heritage attraction and festival main sponsor, Reepham and Whitwell Station, hosts the music at the station site.
and we felt we could do something to help.’
And once again this year under 15s can enjoy the fun for free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Admission to the Sunday event is free to Saturday ticket holders. Those wishing to make a weekend of it can stay at the festival campsite, which is filling up fast with half the pitches already booked. “Reepham Festival strikes the right balance between a family day out and a marathon treat for music fans’ explained Steve Jenkins. ‘It’s all easily accessible. People don’t have to walk miles from their car to get to the music. It’s a local festival with a big atmosphere and it brings visitors to the town who are often pleasantly surprised by this historic gem in the Norfolk countryside. Now that we’re firmly established on the festival calendar we find we’re getting people travelling from as far as Scotland, Manchester and the West Country. We must be doing something right!’

As always, the weekend offers something for all the family – and for 2013 the organisers have held tickets at last year’s prices. ‘That was a big decision’ explained Steve Jenkins. ‘People tell us it’s a good value-formoney day out. We never lose sight of the fact that we’re raising funds for local charities and the festival is not run /7' / 7' for personal profit but even so, these are difficult times, ,,1685$1&( $33529(' 1685$1&( $33 35 52 5 29(' financially, for many, $&&,'(17 5(3$,5 63(&,$/,67 $&&,'(17 5( (3 3$,5 63(&,$/,67
Aylsham Foodie Quiz back for a fourth year
It's back! Slow Food Aylsham's popular 'Foodie Quiz' is making a welcome return on Saturday 11May. With over 100 questions featuring links - no matter how obscure - to food and drink, food lovers are assured of a fun night that's designed for all the family.
Quizmaster Roger Willis has again trawled through his reference books, the internet and other dark places to come up with the questions, ranging from lighthearted subjects like Jasper Carrot (geddit?), to the more esoteric, "ingredients of Welsh Cakes".
The Quiz, now in its fourth year, will be in Aylsham Town Hall and during the interval quizzers will be served with a Savoury Pie Platter comprising locally sourced ingredients. Liquid refreshment will be available from a licensed bar.
Tickets, at just ÂŁ7 per person - including supper - are available from Salad Days fruit and veg stall in Aylsham Market Place or by phoning 07833 096931. Proceeds from the Quiz will go to help finance this year's Aylsham Food Festival which runs from 4th to 6th October. Sheringham Independent 366 April 27th 2013

Summer Sun
August. The gripping tale focuses on former writer Sidney Bruhl and his thoughts of murder when presented with a script by an unknown playwright.
Comedy, drama, spice and intrigue – the summer season at Sheringham Little Theatre looks set to offer a dazzling array of exciting shows.
Tickets have just gone on sale for this year’s summer rep and, with a carefully chosen programme of plays to choose from, theatregoers are sure to find something to entice them.
Debbie Thompson, director of the Sheringham Little Theatre told us that this year’s season launches into action with Teechers, by John Godber, on Saturday 6 July. This will be followed by Deathtrap by Ira Levin, We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figurines Aboard the SS Farndale Avenue by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr, Tom, Dick and Harry by Ray and Michael Cooney and Lettuce and Loveage, by Peter Shaffer.
“We can’t wait for 2013’s summer rep to begin – we are so excited about all the different plays,” she said. “And this year many of our best-loved actors are returning, having been carefully chosen for roles we know they will really shine in.”
This summer sees Rupert Mason, Madeleine Brolly, Sarah Langton, Loraine Metcalf, Ryan Starling and Richard Keightley take to the stage. They will be joined by Rebecca Todd,
Cornelius Garrett, Harry Williams and Ellen Waite in taking on a number of roles each.
John Godber’s fast-moving comedy runs until Monday, 15 July and then returns between
Saturday 3 August and Tuesday 6 August. Set in a high school, it takes a wry look at the education system and tells the story of three students.
Ira Levin’s Deathtrap is a dark thriller that opens on Wednesday 17 July and runs until Thursday 25 July before returning from Monday 19 August and Saturday 24
We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figurines Aboard the SS Farndale Avenue sees the cast take on the various roles of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society for a romp aboard the SS Farndale.
This runs from Saturday 27 July to Friday 2 August and then again from Monday 26 August to Saturday 31 August.
From Thursday 8 August to Saturday 17 August the hilarious tale of three brothers, Tom, Dick and Harry, will have the audience in fits of laughter while another comedy, Lettuce and Loveage, keeps them chuckling from Tuesday 3 September to Saturday 7 September as they follow theatrical Lettice Douffet’s own take on being a tour guide at potentially the dullest stately home in England.
“It is going to be a brilliant summer at Sheringham Little Theatre,” said Debbie. “All these plays will have something really special to offer and together will offer a fabulous season of shows.”

The April meeting began with a brief AGM followed by a talk about "The Singing Postman".
Long standing Sheringham resident Des Barney shared his recollections about his boyhood pal, Alan Smethurst.
Des felt he may have started Alan, the Singing Postman's interest in music, by sharing with him his own love for music and, at the time, a 'shedfull' of records.

Alan's own interest in music included American Jimmie Rodgers and George Formby who was from Lancashire, as was Alan's father. According to Des, Alan bought a ukelele at a second hand shop in Co-Op Street for half a crown and composed tunes, including the third verse of "I Don't Work for a Living". At this point Des sang three verses. Des and Alan composed verses of schoolboy humour but Des refrained from reciting them this evening. As the Singing Postman, Mr. Smethurst's most notable song was "Have You Got A Light Boy? Des sang the title then played the song from a cd.
Alan's mother was from Stiffkey. During the summer, his parents sent him to stay with his great grandmother in Stiffkey while they rented his room to Sheringham visitors. Mr. Barney used to visit Alan there and he mentioned the "Little Miss from Diss" had a sister also whom he met. Mr. Smethurst had his ups and downs as Des revealed, at one time outselling the Beatles in Norfolk, appeared on Top of the Pops, and played The Hippodrome in Yarmouth. When he died in Grimsby in December 2000 Des Barney attended the funeral of his boyhood friend.
The enjoyable evening was completed by excellent tea and biscuits, as usual.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club
We have been busy over the last three months planning our Fundraising and Social events for 2013.
On a cold February afternoon we had a most interesting visit to Archant Press in Norwich and saw how the news is gathered and collated before going to press. This was followed by a visit to the printing area where we were then shown how the newspapers are printed. After the visit we had an enjoyable meal at a local hostelry.
In March we held another very enjoyable “Quiz & Chips” night in aid of Nelson’s Journey and other Lions charities. We also held an “Easter Egg Hunt”. Local pubs/clubs each had a card where they sold squares at £1 each and one lucky person who picked the winning square received a large Easter Egg. Again the proceeds are being donated to Nelson’s Journey and other Lions charities.
In April we started our street collections, the first being outside the Co-op in Cromer. We will be having our charity stall at Kelling
Heath Holiday Park’s Retro Weekend on 7 July and also on The Lea’s, The Esplanade, Sheringham on 4 August.
We do have on ongoing Lions project where we collect old spectacles which can be recycled and sent to Third World countries to help the visually impaired. We have collecting bins in Lloyd’s Chemist in Sheringham and also in Cromer Hospital. We would kindly ask you to please donate any unused or broken spectacles in these bins so that we can send them off to a central area where the spectacles can be sorted and any that can be used are then boxed up and sent off to various destinations. If you cannot get to either of these collection points you can ring Lion Sally on 01263 825560 to arrange for someone to collect them.
We are now in the process of organising a six day luxury coach holiday departing 31August. The holiday includes staying in 18th Century hotels together with a steam train trip from York to Carlisle, a boat trip and visits to Gretna
Green, the Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and Vindolanda. The cost of the holiday is £ 460 per person (single supplement £95) for dinner, bed and breakfast, the train fare, boat trip and entrance to Vindolanda. For more information please contact Arthur on 01263 570009 or email arthur.j.bailey@btinternet.com
If you are interested in anything we do and would like to come along to a meeting please contact the Club Secretary Lion Brian on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com for more information.
We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at The Morley Club, Sheringham at 7.30pm. The first meeting is usually a business meeting but the second meeting is normally a social get together. Why not come along; you will be most welcome.
A Historical "Tail"
In 1087 William 11 succeeded to the English throne and was more commonly known as Rufus the Red due to his ginger hair. He was a keen huntsman and was always accompanied by a number of greyhounds.
Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders have a ginger brindle greyhound called Rufus who is looking to rule a home, using the sofa as his throne. He will celebrate his sixth birthday in June, is not bothered about hunting, is an easy going, laid back sort of a fellow and loves to be with and around people of all ages. Rufus has a lovely white face and very endearing eyes, he makes friends easily and is much loved by our volunteers. He has a regal air about him and will certainly be loyal to his subjects... sorry I mean to his new owners.
If you would like to meet Rufus, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797. 20

Cromer Carnival Confirms Aerial Acts for Carnival Day Cromer Carnival committee have confirmed the aerial acts that will wow crowds at this year’s Carnival Day on Wednesday 21 August.
The Carnival will welcome not one but three aerial displays.
The mighty Blades Aerobatic Display Team and the Wildcat Aerobatics Team will be joined by The Princess of Wales Parachute Display Team – The Tigers.
The announcement comes after the disappointing news that the Red Arrows will not be appearing at this year’s Carnival.
The Blades are amongst the most experienced display pilots in the UK and all are former RAF fast-jet pilots and all are former Red Arrows. Their air display is renowned world-wide and audiences will be treated to a 15 minute, jaw-dropping sequence of over 30 separate manoeuvres.
In the skies on Carnival day visitors will also see the spectacular Wildcat Aerobatics in their iconic biplanes. The Wildcats are East Anglia’s
premier formation aerobatic display team and deliver a crowd-thrilling formation spectacular that encapsulates both close-formation aerobatics and synchronized pairs flying.
Carnival Day will also see the return of The Tigers Parachute Display Team for Cromer. Dropping into the arena, smoke trailing, flags flying they will be performing several amazing formations both in the air and under the parachute.
Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted that crowds at this year’s Carnival will be treated to three aerial displays on Carnival Day.”
He added “Since hearing the disappointing news about not getting the Red Arrows members of the Carnival Committee have worked hard to secure these very exciting aerial displays. Both the Wildcats and the Blades are well known for their displays at many of the country's top air shows and will
Sheringham Independent 366 April 27th 2013
be an exciting alternative to the Red Arrows. They will be a great enhancement to the arena programme we already have booked for Carnival Day.”
Carnival Day will offer crowds not only thrills in the air but thrills on the ground too with acts in the arena confirmed as Woodforde’s Dray, The White Helmets Motorbike Display Team, Romford Drum & Trumpet Corp, West Lancs. Dog Display Team and Out on a Wing Falconry.
The Carnival has also released the dates for this year’s Royal Family competitions.
The Miss Cromer and Senior Attendant Competition will take place on Friday 3 May at 7.30pm at The Cliftonville Hotel. The Junior Attendants competition will take place on Friday 24 May at 7pm at The Cottage in Cromer. The Prince and Princess competition will take place on Sunday 26 May at 3pm at the Community Hall.

Our full restaurant menu is also available as is our Children’s Menu and super bar snacks so the choice is yours. As with all out dishes we have sourced as many of the ingredients as possible from our local suppliers and continue to insist on the very best quality fish, meat and vegetables that we can find. With the promise of warmer weather on the way we are expecting our garden and children’s play area to be in more demand particularly with younger families giving Mum and Dad the chance to enjoy eating ‘Alfresco'; while the children play.
The Easter holiday was a busy period for the pub and we would like to thank all our

Dear Margaret
I would like to let all the good people of Norfolk know that there are still people out there who care.
In August 2012 we accepted an offer on our property which was in the hands of Arnold Keys of Cromer and was given all the help that was required.
In October of the same year our buyers pulled out a few days before exchange, leaving us out of pocket and very, very angry.
We are now in April 2013 and we have now SSTC again and I firmly believe that this time it will be OK.
The confidence to continue with this very stressful situation has been down to the support we have received from the following people:
• Kelly Moran of Arnold Keys Cromer (now to be working with Watsons of Sheringham) - we will miss her, but i am sure Emma will take care of us.
• Michelle Hann (W.H. Brown Cromer) who arranged our mortgage for our new property in Sheringham.
• and Sue Seal-Coon of Hansells Solicitors North Walsham.
Both my husband and I could not have come back from the brink without the help we received from those people. We certainly had help from family and friends but help from the sources involved with conveyancing was invaluable. Yours sincerely
Jayne and Brian Lowe
Dear Margaret
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the Grumpy Old Man re charities.
I really am sick and tired of all the appeals on TV - there are two charities I support - Arthritis Care and Kitalie (orphans in Uganda). I know where I want my money to go - I have SLE hence Arthritis Care.
If you read the blurb on charity bags, a lot say that things will be sold at low prices to those who need them. I only put stuff in bags for recognised charities. I have a notice on the door, saying 'No Charity Bags - it just gets ignored. The same as double glazing salesmen - the double glazing was done a couple of years ago. I ended up sending a recorded delivery letter to the Managing Director of Everest, saying that if I wanted double glazing, I would ask for a number of quotes - I wouldn't just buy from someone who turned up on the doorstep - especially when their shirt was untucked and their breakfast egg was down their shirt front and that they could take us off their database and that any further communication would be considered as harrassment. We are bombarded with appeals - I am unemployed and on a very small pension, hence I am very careful about committing myself to any regular payment. I hate being approached in the street for charity - 'only £4 a month.' I explain very carefully that I am a pensioner on a very small pension and that I can not commit to a monthly direct debit. No one has ever done anything to help me - I've paid tax for who knows how many years and no one wants to help me. I have managed all these years - and no doubt I will continue to manage.
I think charity ought to begin at home. Why are we sending all this money abroad? There are plenty of deserving causes here. Why do we think we have the right to interfere with another countries rules and politics? Their ways may not be the same as ours - but that is their choice. If I go to another Islamic country I have to obey their rules - including veils and no alcohol. I have to obey their rules - so why, when they come over here, do they expect us to follow their rules?

The club in West Runton has ensured good procedures are in place, including for child protection, and has expanded its activities by running regular coaching sessions for juniors and by providing group and individual coaching in conjunction with the Norfolk County Golf Partnership.
The Links has bucked the national trend by increasing its membership numbers in each of the last two years and is set for further success. The club is very welcoming and the course provides a strong challenge for more experienced golfers, while still being enjoyable and accessible to juniors and beginners.

LINKS AWARDED GOLFMARK
The Links Country Park Golf Club has achieved the GolfMark award for high standards in Coaching, Playing and for having a junior and beginner friendly club environment.
Woodburners, multi-fuel and gas stoves supplied & fitted
The nine-hole course has seen significant investment and improvement over the last two years, including the addition of new teeing grounds, reshaping of fairways and a new irrigation system.

An appeal has been raised in the run up to the spring bank holidays asking people to consider giving blood before they pack up to go on holiday. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are requesting that people donate before they travel to help maintain blood stocks throughout the summer.
Nationally 7,000 units of blood are needed every day by hospitals to treat people suffering from a wide range of ailments and injuries. Blood donations are also a vital part of treatment for many conditions including cancer and long term illnesses.
Traditionally, the routine of giving blood can be disrupted during the holiday period as people are planning or enjoying trips away, often overseas. Certain holiday destinations could potentially increase the risk of travellers getting infections such as Malaria so, although the risk of infection is low, donors are asked to wait for six months after their return, before giving blood. NHSBT would urge donors to give blood before they travel to ensure blood stocks are maintained. Travellers to areas where West Nile Virus is

England Golf, the national body for amateur golf, awarded the Links GolfMark status, while Sport England, the national body for all sports, has also recognised the Links with its ClubMark award.
Presenting the award, Karen Young of the Norfolk County Golf Partnership said, ‘I am delighted to present the Links with these awards. The club is an ideal venue for juniors and beginners to learn golf and to continue to enjoy playing the game throughout their golfing lives’.
Dominic Dyer, PGA Professional at the Links said ‘GolfMark is further recognition that we are achieving high standards. The club has a very welcoming atmosphere and we must thank our current members for that. They help visitors and new golfers feel at home and help make the club a place where you want to spend time and relax’.
present no longer have to delay donation. As they can be tested following their return, they are able to donate right away. If people are not sure if travel restriction apply to them, or have any questions, they can call 0300 123 23 23 to find out.
Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT for the Anglia area, said “We would love to see both new and existing donors come down to one of their local sessions in May. We understand that people’sroutines change as they start to think about holidays and enjoying time away from their everyday lives to spend with family and friends, but we hope people will consider giving blood before they travel to help keep stocks stable throughout the summer months. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives.” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way!
– and tickets for the Opening Concert are now on sale
This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival and tickets for the Opening Concert are now on sale.
With numerous events this year’s Festival offers plenty of fun for all the family across the weekend of 18 & 19 May. Events however, have already started with the launch of the Scrumptious Seafood Trail and the start of the Festival’s Lifebuoy Art Trail on 15 April. With the Festival’s first Seafood Snack Trail already underway, people are out and about visiting local cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels, sampling the Festival specials available on over 25 menus.
the group has entertained at prestigious Maritime Festivals at Bristol, Southampton and Portsmouth Festival of the Sea.
John Conolly has based his style firmly in the folk tradition. His finely-crafted songs are performed with warmth, good humour and lilting accompaniments on guitar and melodeon. Many of John’s songs have a tang of the sea, inherited from his upbringing on the east coast of England.
The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with an Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday 17 May. This is a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradtion of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour.
The ever-popular Olly Day returns to host the Concert which features music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen, internationallyrespected singer John Conolly and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer.
Local sea shanty group the Sheringham Shantymen have, over 20 years, developed their own style of performing songs of the sea and as well as hundreds of local performances
Olly Day is firmly established as one of East Anglia’s finest performers. His unique style combines an irresistible sense of humour, lots of Magic and an impressive singing voice. Olly has just completed his fourth year on stage at Cromer with the Christmas Seaside Special, to rave reviews from both the press and public alike.
Sheringham Independent 366 April 27th 2013
Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer is a natural comedian, using daft poetry, hilarious stories and his uncanny ability for acting the fool on stage to get a laugh. His 'country boy' style of presentation adds an extra twist to his performance that has his audience in stitches.
Tickets are only £5 and are now available from the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263 512495. Festival organisers said “the concert will be an evening of great entertainment to open the Festival weekend”.
The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 18 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 19 May with a programme which promises a feast of superb seafood, scintillating street entertainment, music, film, seafood competitions and the return of the Festival’s World Pier Crabbing Championships.
Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “In 2012 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend, thousands followed the deckchair trail and hundreds of children entered the design competition – it is hoped this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events will achieve the same success and bring more and more people to this fabulous area”.

Vodafone to pay compensation
Compensation for Vodafone customers Norman Lamb has received confirmation from Vodafone that compensation will be paid to customers who have suffered serious inconvenience following poor coverage in the Sheringham, Mundesley, Aylsham, Cromer and North
Walsham areas. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I am pleased to hear that Vodafone will be compensating customers and strongly feel that it is the right thing for them to do. Paying customers rightly expect a certain level
Waitrose Support Mundesley Under 13s Football Club
Waitrose North Walsham presented a cheque for £260 to Mundesley Under 13s Football Club earlier this month as part of their 'Community Matters' scheme. Andy Wicks, coach to the boys said "This money is most welcome as the boys need to some extra kit and it will help to provide warm up jackets" Each month Waitrose provides £1000 that is split between three causes and customers 'vote' for their preferred choice by placing a token in the box. The picture shows Kevin Woolstenholmes of Waitrose presenting the cheque to Andy Wicks and the team.
Groups come together to promote voluntary community car schemes
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recently brought together community groups, parish councils and local GP practices in an effort to promote hospital transport schemes across the constituency. Brilliant volunteers in some of our local communities organise such schemes for local people to get them to hospital. Can we get more schemes established in other towns and villages?
At a meeting in Cromer just before Easter, the MP highlighted the more than 2,000 journeys made each year by the Holt Caring Society, which has been in operation for more than thirty years. Similar schemes exist in communities across the constituency, including in Ludham, Potter Heigham and Hoveton. Other areas, however, including Cromer, are not covered.
The meeting was intended to provide
26
inspiration, information and advice to people who might be thinking of establishing a similar scheme in their own area.
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I am regularly contacted by constituents having difficulty getting to doctor and hospital appointments. Public transport from rural North Norfolk into Norwich for a hospital appointment is simply not a realistic option for people. My own mum, who is 94, was lucky enough to have the Holt Caring Society scheme available to help her get to hospital appointments in recent months. It is a fantastic scheme, very simple, very local, but of real practical benefit. It is a lifeline for people like my mum who cannot drive themselves.” Andrew Wilkinson, Business Manager at Holt Medical Practice, said “I’m indebted to Holt Caring Society and their
of service, and if that isn’t delivered then it is only right that they should be reimbursed. Vodafone have confirmed to me that they will look at each case individually and reimburse customers depending on their situation and how they were affected.”
drivers, and so is the practice as a whole, for the fantastic service they provide. I am delighted to support and endorse the valuable service the Holt Caring Society provides to our local patient community. The meeting was extremely useful and informative for those communities hoping to set up similar schemes in North Norfolk. I just hope the momentum can be maintained and more schemes are set up in the future”.
Commenting further, Norman Lamb said “Similar schemes in other communities are invaluable for local residents. At the meeting we heard from groups in Holt, Ludham, Potter Heigham, Hoveton and Aylsham about how to set up and run a scheme, and the difference it makes to local people. The community car schemes we already have in these villages and others in North Norfolk show what a difference a small group of committed people can make. The question now is whether we can extend and support these brilliant schemes. If you want to discuss the situation in your community, or think you could help as a volunteer driver, do get in touch.”

Opportunity to comment on development plans for Holt site
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is seeking comments from the public on a draft ‘development brief’ for land at Heath Farm and Hempstead Road, Holt.
The consultation, which began on Monday 22 April and runs until Monday 20 May, includes an opportunity for members of the public to discuss proposals for the site with NNDC Planning Officers at a drop-in exhibition at St. Andrews Church Hall in Holt on Tuesday 30 April (3-7pm).
The site at Heath Farm and Hempstead Road is one of those formally adopted by NNDC in February 2011 in its development plan for the district, which identified a variety of sites for housing, employment and other uses.
The 18 hectare site between the A148 Cromer Road and Hempstead Road could provide up to 290 new homes, including many affordable homes, employment development, public open space and community facilities including new allotments.
A development brief sets out key requirements regarding layout, open space, access arrangements and the appearance of the development. It provides a master-plan to which all developers working on site will need to adhere.
Those unable to attend the drop-in event can see details of the draft development brief at Holt Library from 1 May until the end of the consultation period.
The document and further information can be found at: www.northnorfolk.org/majordevelopments.
Representatives from the two largest landowners of the site will also be on hand at the 30 April exhibition, presenting indicative plans for the development on their part of the site, which it is proposed will include a residential
development for 200 - 215 dwellings along with five hectares of employment land and public open space. The purpose of their exhibition will be to obtain the public’s views on an outline planning application on their land, due to be submitted by the end of May 2013.
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning, Rhodri Oliver, said, “North Norfolk District Council really values the views of local residents and it’s vital we know what people think about development proposals such as this. I look forward to hearing what people in and around Holt have to say so that we can give their views full consideration in any future discussions.”
Comments on the development brief should be received by Monday 20 May, addressed to: Major Developments Team, North Norfolk District Council, Holt Road, Cromer, NR27 9EN or by email to majordevelopments@north-norfolk.gov.uk
Roadshow visits Timeline Antiques BBC Televisions popular programme ‘Antiques Road Trip’ recently visited North Walsham’s Timeline Antique Centre to film a piece for a future programme.
Owner Michael Jones welcomed antiques expert James Braxton and a BBC film crew to his centre. James, who had stayed the previous night in Upper Sheringham, had driven over in a converted vintage Citroen 2CV open topped car. He was on the lookout for bargains to be sold later at Gaze & Sons auction establishment in Diss, in the hope of making a profit for charity.
James scoured the centre in the search for bargains and was pleased to find something to satisfy his taste and pocket, before the time honoured ‘haggling’ took place and all parties were happy at the outcome.
The BBC hopes to broadcast the finished programme sometime later in the autumn. Some 30 dealers take space in the Timeline Antiques Centre,

Overstrand Hall the perfect venue for photoshoot The sun shone on the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society’s photo shoot at Overstrand Hall earlier this month. Members of the Society are getting ready to put on the well known musical The Sound of Music as part of their fundraising for Parkinson’s UK, their chosen charity this year.
The production team included Melanie Lodge, a make-up artist from Cromer and Paula Faires from Roughton, who made sure the wigs were styled in the fashion of the day. Yvonne Kidd, who owns Renaissance hair salon, in Bond Street, Cromer, also made sure the hair styles were correct for the time in which the musical was set and Yvonne Howard from Stratton Strawless was in charge of the costumes. The photos will be seen in the production programme, on the CSODS web site, at the Pavilion Theatre box office and in shop windows in Cromer soon. Tickets for the show, which runs from Saturday 25th May to Saturday 1st June, are available from the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263 512495.
6th April sees income tax cut for more than 300,000 people in Norfolk
Saturday 6 April marked the largest ever rise in the personal allowance as it went up to £9,440.
As a result, 312,300 basic rate taxpayers in Norfolk will see their income tax cut for the third year in a row. Meanwhile, 34,000 of the lowest paid in the county will have been lifted out of paying any income tax at all since the Coalition came into government.
Local Liberal Democrat MPs Norman Lamb and Simon Wright hailed the change as an important step towards the party’s goal of a fairer tax system. The personal allowance will rise again to £10,000 in April next year under changes announced in the recent Budget. It was £6,475 under the Labour Government.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “These changes would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government. Times are tough but we are committed to building a fairer society and this change will help people on the lowest incomes. In future I think that anyone earning the minimum wage should not have to pay any income tax at all.”
Commenting, Simon Wright said "The Liberal Democrats are committed to helping people on the lowest incomes and I'm delighted we have been able to meet this commitment, that was on the front page of our manifesto, a year early. The last Government hit low earners hard by slashing the 10p tax rate - now people who paid that rate before have been lifted out of tax altogether, and people earning the minimum wage have had their tax bill cut in half. For low earners in Norwich this extra cash will make a real difference."

Making a Dramatic Entrance Sheringham Little Theatre is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Youth Outreach Programme this year.
The scheme, which has supported dozens of youngsters, who have gone on to carve out careers for themselves in the theatre, was launched in 2003 and includes classes in both Sheringham and North Walsham.
which is part of the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, and could end up being staged at the theatre in London.
Youth outreach manager Bridget Robinson, who has overseen the programme from the beginning, said participants had gone on to win places at drama school and to take up jobs in theatre, television and film.
“We work on performance skills in our classes and so the sessions are ideal for those with an interest in theatre or acting, and who perhaps want to take it further. They offer a pathway to all sorts of opportunities later in life,” she said.
But, she added: “The classes are also great fun and are confidence-building for those who just enjoy taking part.”
This year has seen youngsters from the outreach programme win roles in Sheringham Little Theatre’s community production of Annie. Some are also starring in The Guffin,
children the chance to appear within a real, working theatre,” she said.
“Furthermore, every year, we are swamped with applications from Year 10 pupils looking for work experience at the theatre. As we cannot accept them all, we do give priority to those in our classes.”
Hour-long classes are run at the Sheringham theatre on Monday evenings and at North Walsham High School on Thursdays. Sessions are held at different times for different age groups.
Recent success stories include the likes of Ryan Howes, who is about to graduate from renowned drama school Rose Bruford College, and has parts in this year’s professional summer rep at Sheringham.
The classes focus on stage skills, drama and dance for young people aged four to 16, giving them a chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications and step out on stage at a professional venue.
“These classes run by Sheringham Little Theatre are exceptional in that they give the
Thousands of Norfolk electricity and gas users set to make savings
Nearly three thousand North Norfolk households will find out in the next couple of weeks how much they could save on their electricity and gas bills, now the initial results of a council-run scheme to use the power of numbers to negotiate reduced household tariffs have been announced. Across the county six local authorities are involved in the ‘Norfolk Big Switch and Save’ scheme. In North Norfolk, where the scheme is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), 2,796 households registered with Big Switch and Save. On 8 April, at the end of the registration period, energy companies in the UK were asked to take part in a ‘reverse auction’ and submit their lowest offers, the best of which would then be offered to all those who registered to see whether they could get a better deal. The auction was a great success, with three companies, Sainsbury’s Energy, Scottish Power and British Gas winning in three different categories – dual fuel, electricity only, and prepayment meter customers. Overall, 71% of the people who registered could make a saving on their annual electricity and gas bills by switching to one of the offers, with an average saving of £111. The highest average saving would be £139 for Dual Fuel customers opting for online billing. John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said, “A lot of hard-pressed residents of North Norfolk could soon be in for some really good news.” Households will be contacted over the next couple of weeks with their own specific offer. They are under no obligation to switch supplier after receiving the offer, meaning that those customers not offered a saving through the scheme can be reassured that they are already on the best deal for them. And all is not lost for those who missed the opportunity this time round, as NNDC is hoping to run the scheme again later in the year. Sheringham Independent 366 April 27th 2013
“We are very proud of what our young people achieve – we have seen many of them grow and develop with us over the years,” said Bridget.
“We look forward to continuing to work with them for another 10 years and to watch many more go on to achieve great things.”

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition featuring photographs from local photographer Guy Metcalf. The exhibition includes many shots from around the north Norfolk coast as well as others from locations around the world. The photographs are in both colour and black and white and demonstrate how various dimensions of light can change an image. Each shot brings the atmosphere to life, making an image peaceful, mystical, striking or minimalist.
Guy is currently studying with the Photography Institute. He’s spent months travelling the world, and yet strongly believes that some of the most beautiful landscapes and views that he has captured are here in north Norfolk. See the region through Guy’s lens, from beautiful sunrises to powerful, evocative images of the North Sea.
NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work.
