Silver Jubilee celebrated with village mural
Bodham and Beckham village hall celebrated its Silver Jubilee on Saturday 27 April by unveiling a splendid mural of 12 canvasses showing 12 scenes from the two villages. The mural was the work of Kettlestone artist Gill Baguley who had been commissioned to produce views of village life. The final result is now fixed as the backdrop of the stage at the village hall.
Among those who came along to the unveiling were many past members of the village hall committee who had presided over the construction of the building 25 years ago. The new mural seems a very suitable addition to a building which plays an important part in enriching village life.
Large numbers of people from the two communities came to see the unveiling by the artist. Pam Baker, chair of the committee and Peter Bedell a committee member, coordinators of the project, explained how a donation from the former Bodham Bingo Club had been made for a specific project and it had been decided to commission the work. The mural was dedicated by the Rev’d Peter Alexander.
At the reception afterwards there was an opportunity for people to go and examine the work closely. “It has been a very exciting project” said Pam Baker “and I am over the moon with the finished article”. Her sentiments were echoed by all those attending.

FAIR TRADE
As a result of sales and stalls in the past few months, including a special Coffee Morning during Fair Trade Fortnight, you have helped many Fair Trade farmers and craft workers by buying their goods. All the profits from these sales go to Traidcraft Exchange, the charity which helps marginalised workers in the Third World. We have just sent off a cheque for £300! Well done and thank you to all the helpers and buyers in the Sheringham and Cromer areas. Brenda Smith
New name, new building for Sheringham church
“Lighthouse” will be the name of a brand new church building which is growing daily in Sheringham, and “Lighthouse Community Church” will be the new name for the local Baptist church which expects to move in during August.
The project started when the folk at Sheringham Baptist Church went to view a replacement site for their crumbling premises back in December 2009. The site was purchased, planning permission granted, and building work commenced in December 2012.
facility for the benefit of the local community. We will be expanding our work with children and young people, and introducing a tea club for the more mature members of the community. We want this to be a place where Sheringham folk feel they can call in and be a part of”.
“Raising that sort of money is pretty miraculous” said Pastor Bryan, “but that is down to God’s provision – We believe this is His plan, so He has enabled the funds to become available”.
The church is now raising finance to complete the fitting out, and to buy chairs! There have been a number of fund-raising events over the last couple of years, including table-top sales, book sales, a plant sale, Christmas Fayre, cosmetics evening, Barn Dance, Music Night etc.

Olly has just completed his fourth year on stage at Cromer with the Christmas Seaside Special, to rave reviews from both the press and public alike.

NNR Receives Grant The North Norfolk Railway has received £99,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards its project “The Railways and the Suburbs”, which focuses on the impact which the railways had on the development of the London suburbs.
It will include an exhibition to enable visitors to learn about how the railways influenced the growth of the suburbs, and about the technologies involved in the design of locomotives and carriages specifically for suburban commuting.
North Norfolk Railway already operates a substantial education programme involving
local schools. This project will add significantly to its existing geography, history and science elements, and will also give volunteers the chance to experience the two extremes of preservation: hands-on restoration and the anagement of a major scheme.
support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and are confident that the project will further the public’s understanding of a vital aspect of everyday life for millions.”
The project includes the restoration of two carriages introduced for suburban travel. These will complement vehicles already on the railway and allow visitors to travel on three generations of suburban trains dating from the ’20s to the ’60s.

Car Park fire damages Signal Box
On Monday 21st April, a fire believed to have started in a parked car in the Station car park, damaged at least two other vehicles as well as the 106 year old signal box. At the end of last year the box had been moved ready for refurbishment, which had begun only a few days previously.
No-one was hurt in the incident, which included the carpenter who was working on the other side of the box.
Photo courtesy Alan Reeves of Sparks Electrical Supplies
North Norfolk Railway’s General Manager Trevor Eady commented, “I am relieved that there were no injuries from the incident. It appears that the damage to the signal box is superficial and not structural. On the side facing the car park we had already done some of the restoration work, but we will as always overcome the problem and continue with the work.

DADS’ ARMY LIVE!
Weybourne Station, Saturday/Sunday May 25/26
LPG & NATURAL GAS
The famous “Royal Train” episode of the evergreen Dads’ Army was filmed at Weybourne station on what was then the fledgling North Norfolk Railway in 1973. Forty years on, with the Poppy Line now one of Britain’s top steam railways and the station beautifully restored, the episode will be commemorated in “Dads’ Army Live!”.
The event will run on the Saturday and Sunday of the late May Bank Holiday. The station will be under the control of the Walmington-on-Sea platoon, with volunteers playing the parts of Captain Mainwaring and his colleagues. Corporal Jones’s butcher’s van will be on hand to add to the authentic atmosphere. And on the Sunday afternoon, our intrepid volunteers will re-enact the soaking the platoon got at the end of the episode, when the royal train sped through the water troughs and left them all drenched.

Buying and Selling Property - Summary of the Searches
By Jim Pallister, Partner Hayes + Storr
The purpose of the searches is to advise the Buyer of any public requirements, restrictions or obligations affecting the property and any other matters on public registers affecting the property. In this area of the country we generally carry out the following searches but other searches may be needed depending on where you are buying:-
Local Search
The Local Search reveals any Local Government Charges affecting the property. There many Local Government Charges but the main ones include Planning Charges, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings and certain Renovation Grants. It also tells the Solicitors where the nearest public highway is. This enables your Solicitor to check that there are appropriate rights of access to the property. The Local Search will also often reveal planning permissions affecting the property since 1974 and the most recent Building Regulation Completion Certificates.
Drainage Search
The Drainage Search confirms whether the property is on mains drainage and mains water supply. It provides details as to where the nearest mains run. It also confirms whether
the property is charged on a metered basis for water use.
Chancel Repair Search
The purpose of a Chancel Repair Search is to find out whether the property comes with a potential liability to maintain the local Church. This search is required by many Mortgage Lenders and at present is generally to be recommended.
Commons Registry Search
The Commons Registry Search confirms that none of the property is Common Land. As well as having to be open and often subject to grazing rights Commons should not be built on. This search is recommended for most properties in a rural area or close to a village green or common.
Environmental Search
The Environmental Search looks at the previous uses of the properties and reveals whether any of those uses are likely to have led to contamination or pollution of the land. It also confirms whether the property is within the flood plain area. This search is generally to be recommended.
Plan Search
The Plan Search comes in a variety of different forms and can advise whether Planning Permissions have been granted in the area, local crime figures, schools etc.

Concert by great British duo is recreated at Gresham’s
Almost 50 years after Benjamin Britten’s final performance at Gresham’s in Holt, the School is recreating the event with an evening of music on the same stage that the great musician performed on.
The year was 1964 when Headmaster of the time, Logie Bruce-Lockhart, succeeded in inviting Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears to give a recital to the boys of Gresham’s. Britten himself left the school in 1930 to attend the Royal College of Music, and despite remaining in contact with the school (arranging a place for his protégé David Hemmings and contributing a song to the school’s quadricentennial magazine in 1955) had never actually returned to perform.
Bruce-Lockhart remembers that “Although it was relatively remote from my study, his (Pears’) practising of scales and the clarity of his words made a great impression on the usual queue of boys outside my study and our guests in the drawing room.”
The concert itself took place on the stage of Big School and was a programme of songs by Purcell, Handel, Schubert and Winter Words by Britten. He also took the opportunity to talk to the assembled audience to share his memories of playing for school prayers and being told to get his hair cut!
Gresham’s recreates this concert on the very same stage that Britten and Pears performed on, and already many Old-Boys of the school who remember the 1964 event have decided to come back for a trip down memory lane. The piano however will not be the original piano, but instead will be the inaugural performance on the new Steinway model B grand piano that recently arrived as part of Gresham’s All-Steinway School status.
Playing the part of Peter Pears will be the tenor Thomas Hobbs. A recipient of the Peter Pears Scholarship at the Royal College of Music, Thomas Hobbs has performed and recorded with many leading ensembles including The Cardinall’s Musick, The Tallis Scholars, I Fagiolini, Consortium, The Sixteen, Polyphony, Ensemble Plus Ultra and Ex-Cathedra. Director of Music at Gresham’s Senior School, Mark Jones – also a graduate of the Royal College of Music, will accompany him.
Tickets for this unique event will be held on Friday 31st May at 7.30pm in Big School, Gresham’s.
Tickets are £12 and are available from the Auden Theatre Box Office, 01263 713444 or via boxoffice@greshams.com.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch
The Sheringham Lifeboat was launched at the request of Humber Coastguard at 10.15hrs on Monday 29 April to go to the assistance of two swimmers thought to be in trouble approximately 200 metres seaward of the shelter on the East Promenade known locally as the ‘Tank’ at Sheringham. The tide was in full flood with a 15 knot westerly wind generating a 1.5 metre swell.
A concerned member of the public had alerted a Deputy Launching Authority (DLA) of Sheringham Lifeboat who alerted Humber Coastguard.
The Lifeboat was launched and escorted the two swimmers back safely to shore. Launched with good intent.

Grumpy Old Man: Road Closed
‘Sheringham Traders Angry at Road Closures’ – so ran the billboard headlines recently, propped outside the newsagents.
Investigating, I read that pedestrian crossings were to be installed and thought ‘how welcome’, as there are, unusually, none in Sheringham town centre streets to protect the harassed shoppers and that the traders ought to be pleased life will be a bit easier and safer for their customers.
In due course Station Approach was closed whilst the contractors got busy behind their red and white barriers and the bus services did their best to carry on.
A few days later normality returned, but after all the expense and disruption the result was
not a proper pedestrian crossing as I had fondly imagined. A strip of brickweave had been laid across the road, flush with the tarmac, meeting a dropped kerb at each side and the double yellow lines carefully rejoined.
I deduce the purpose is to provide a level crossing point for those with pushchairs, trolleys and wheelchairs. However, it gives no protection for their users or for other pedestrians who must still defer to road traffic, but it has introduced an element of uncertainty, as I have observed it does tempt walkers to cross after dithering at the kerb whilst glaring at oncoming drivers in a battle of wills to see who backs down first. We already have one of these brickweave pathways across the lesser one-way traffic of Station Road and it seems
we may get another of these ‘shall I, shan’t I?’ crossings which are, in my opinion, of as much use as a chocolate teapot, actually adding to the hazard of using the streets.
Why the Highway authorities are messing about with these baffling novelties at considerable expense I fail to understand. It is best summarised by a woman who, in the act of pulling her elderly mother back onto the pavement, told her crossly, ‘if you get knocked over you won’t have a leg to stand on’!
It seems the traders were justified in being angry after all.
The Great Operatic Bake Off!
Over £700 was raised last month by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, by selling dozens of freshly baked cakes, made by members of the Society. The fund raising event was held at the Community Centre in Garden Street Cromer. They also had craft stalls, a bric-a-brac stall, a tombola stall and served light refreshments. Mr Andrew Grey, who works for Barclays Bank, has asked Barclays to match the amount raised, and they have agreed, to a maximum of £750.
Many of the cast and crew were involved including Jack Jarvis 9, from Saxthorpe, and Callum Adkins, 13, from Aylsham. Both boys took to the streets wearing sandwich boards advertising the cake sale and the show, The Sound of Music, in which Jack plays the part of Kurt von Trapp and Callum plays Friedrich von Trapp.
The Society Treasurer, Mr Peter Howell, who is also the director for the forthcoming production of The Sound of Music said that the amount raised was tremendous, and that the effort was magnificent.
Society Chairman, Mr Andrew Payne, congratulated all those who were involved and said that they did a fantastic job. The Sound of Music is on at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer from 26th May to 1st June. Tickets are available from the Box Office: 01263 512495

Rich Chocolate Torte
from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett
Since the runaway success of last month’s Proper Sticky Toffee Puddin’ my chef de partie David Chattenton has been pestering me to let him write up another recipe for you, and after he promised to mop the floors every night for six weeks I couldn’t really say no. Apparently he’s being approached in the streets for autographs and there is a book deal around the corner, and as I stand to pick up 50% of the profits as an agency fee I think I should encourage him wherever possible…
This rich chocolate torte is a demanding recipe but extremely worthwhile – it broke the hearts of many of our Valentine’s Day guests a while back and will be featuring throughout the season on our table d’hôte.
The summer à la carte is now in full operation and it’s great to see so many happy diners enjoying their food with us. Don’t forget we’re privileged to be hosting the marquee lunch and tea when Cromer CC entertain the world-famous Lashings Cricket Club on 11th August – tickets are still available so visit www.cromercricketclub.com to reserve yours! I look forward to seeing you soon. Gary Parrett

RICH CHOCOLATE TORTE
For the chocolate sponge base 225g plain flour 350g caster sugar 85g cocoa powder 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 free-range eggs 250ml milk 125ml vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 250ml boiling water
1. Preheat the oven to 180c/350f/gas mark 4. Grease and line a 40cm tin.
2. Place all of the cake ingredients except the boiling water into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or electric whisk beat the mixture until smooth and combined.
3. Add the boiling water to the mixture a little at a time until smooth – the mix will be very liquid but that’s no problem.
4. Pour the mix into the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 25 – 35 minutes until the top is firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
5. Set aside to cool.

For the torte 250g dark chocolate (70%) 2 tbsp golden syrup 570ml double cream 4 tsp instant coffee granules 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp mint extract
1. Break the choclate into small pieces into a large heatproof bowl. Spoon in the syrup and pour in ¼ of the cream. Stand the bowl over (not in) a pan of hot water over the lowest possible heat and leave until the choclate has melted. Remove the bowl from the pan and stir to combine, then leave until barely warm.
2. Pour the rest of the cream into a very large bowl and tip in the coffee, mint extract and cinnamon. Whip the cream until it’s a milkshake consistency.
3. Fold the two mixes together with a large metal spoon in a figure of eight movement.
4. Pour the torte mix onto the sponge and put in the fridge for one hour.
We had a gentleman in for dinner at the weekend who asked for a spoonful of raspberry sorbet with his torte – it worked so well that we are sending all our tortes out with raspberry sorbet now!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As we have mentioned in the past, all cats and kittens that come into our care visit the vets for a health check before they can be offered for adoption. As can be appreciated not all cats arrive in the best of health or condition and some may require treatment which can be ongoing, others may require an operation. For those which have/have had had a significant problem our vets will complete a Medical Summary Form. As well as showing the history of treatment for neutering and blood tests it outlines the condition treated, whether it is currently ongoing or resolved and also the likelihood or not of the condition recurring. A copy of this form is given to the new owner when the cat is re-homed. They can share this information with their vet and may be asked for it if insuring their pet.
Although we may occasionally offer help for treatment where a cat has a significant problem (e.g. diabetes, thyroid) once it has been re-homed, it is the responsibility of the new owner to pay for any future treatment. We would obviously like to help more but unfortunately our resources are such we cannot afford to do this. Generally speaking most cats that leave our care have had their problems resolved before they leave and
Doorstep Crime
Norfolk Police are taking part in a week-long national operation to raise awareness of rogue traders and tackle any cold callers reported in the county.
Officers from Operation RADAR are dedicated to dealing with doorstep crime in Norfolk 52 weeks of the year. They work with partners to target rogue traders and highlight the dangers of consenting to having work carried out by cold callers.
The week of activities is being led by Operation Liberal, the national intelligence unit for distraction burglary and associated travelling criminality, and Trading Standards.
Countryside Cottages
no further treatment will be required. On the rare occasion when a cat leaves us which may require treatment in the future thesituation is explained to the new owner to ensure they appreciate the situation.
It is fortunate for Stephanie that most people are now aware of the special number to ring to obtain help with neutering costs as the “cat phone” has been extremely busy lately with people ringing to offer new homes to the cats in care. We have already re-homed more than 70 this year. Phone calls to vets, fosterers, potential new owners and people with problems take up on average nearly two hours each day (this is just the calls she makes and does not include those she receives) so please be patient if you are waiting for her to call you. As the cats are not all in one location it is also necessary to ring to find out where individual cats are.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Frankie Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

The Grove Opens New Rooms
One of Cromer’s oldest family firms is looking forward to the summer season with optimism.
“Several Cromer firms contributed to the end result - for example All-Tile provided the flooring and Postles took care of all our electrical goods - and it just goes to show that the town has plenty of great companies offering high-quality services”, added Richard. “We have a superb relationship with many local firms and it’s been a real pleasure to work with them on this project.”
The Grove on Overstrand Road hit the headlines in 2012 with the launch of a restaurant complimenting the ten bedroom Georgian summer home, and last winter saw yet more expansion – this time new accommodation nestled in the four acres of woodland grounds.
The Orchard Rooms are five timberframed, custom built guest rooms built on what was part of the Grove’s vegetable garden and framed by a small copse of trees. They were designed by Rob McVicar of A2 Architects in Norwich, built by Norfolk Post and Beam and ND Willan and encompassed a whole range of local Cromer businesses in their outfitting and finishing.
Partner Richard Graveling is delighted with the results. “We’d been looking at increasing room capacity for some time but at the same time were reluctant to extend the house itself which could have dramatically altered the setting. We also get lots of enquiries for ground-floor accommodation, and these new rooms are all suitable for people unable to manage stairs. We’re lucky enough to have decent-sized grounds and there was a perfect spot at the end of the garden in which to build.
“The timber-framed design was put in place deliberately to keep the build time down and make sure we were open for Easter, and Norfolk Post and Beam did a great job. I must say they look absolutely wonderful and we are extremely pleased and proud of them.”
The Grove has also freshened up their management team to oversee what is sure to be a busy summer season. Harriet Blake is heading up the restaurant operation alongside head chef Gary Parrett - the summer menu launched on May 1st - and Carolyn Millman is looking after the front desk.
The interiors of the new rooms were designed by Richard’s wife Jo and reflect varieties of English orchard fruit – Merryweather (damson), Gladstone and Honey Pippin (apple), Sunburst (cherry) and Victoria (plum).
Dance in Sheringham
Dance teacher Yvonne Sidebotham is bringing her skills to the Coast with a new class for beginners in Sheringham.
The 'Absolute Beginners' class for Ballroom and Latin will start on Tuesday, June 4th 7.30-8.30pm at the new Sheringham Community Centre. With the chance to be at the beginning of a new venture with them Yvonne said "I am very excited to bring my knowledge and experience to this prestigious new Centre, where all can benefit from it by learning to dance, socialising, having fun, keeping active and fit all at the same time". Yvonne, who runs the Lane School of Dance, said the classes were suitable for couples or single dancers.
Yvonne, who is also teaching at the Atrium in North Walsham started her love of dancing at age three. "My original training was in ballet and acrobatics which I continued with until my teenage years when I then moved into the Ballroom and Latin field". After taking time out to bring up a family she continued with her passion, passing her teaching qualifications. She said: "Strictly Come Dancing has done a lot to encourage and inspire people to want to learn to dance. The complete beginner needs to build up their confidence by being taught the basic steps and technique correctly which gives them a good foundation".

SUNLINE GETS SEALS’ APPROVAL
The lifeboat house has not housed a lifeboat since 1922 and has a very interesting history - if you haven't been to Blakeney, maybe now is the time as the reserve is not just known for its seal colony, it has several National and International conservation designations and is renowned
Usually you would expect to see seals at Blakeney point but on Wednesday 17th April there was an addition to the Point by way of two fitters from Sunline Curtains and Blinds. The National Trust had pproached Sunline for blinds for their recently renovated property at Blakeney point and of course Sunline rose to the challenge.
The lifeboat house on Blakeney point stands approximately three and a half miles along a shingle spit and was built in 1898, replacing a smaller building from the 1850s. The National Trust acquired Blakeney point 101 years ago, becoming the first nature reserve in Norfolk.
for the breeding Tern colonies as well as other important species of flora and fauna.
Last word to one of the fitters, who was heard to say, "It certainly has been a different experience for us today - we just hoped we had remembered all the equipment we needed otherwise it would have been a long swim back for one of us!" To celebrate the Centenary last year, The National Trust initiated a major refurbishment programme, which was completed last month, the blinds being the finishing touch.
Mr Duffill managed to keep on dry land for the measuring side of the job as he was transported by Land Rover along the shingle spit to the lifeboat house but due to the conservation area and the breeding birds on this route it could not be used for the final stage of the job. So the fitters, blinds and all their tools had to make their way by boat to complete the job. Mr Duffill said “After 32 years of business this has to be a first for us to travel to a job by boat”.

All the blinds and tools had to be wrapped in plastic to protect them from any water spray and as you can see in the photos the fitters also had to be well prepared for the sea trip. As Sunline prepared to leave, the English weather had been kind and the trip over to Blakeney point was a pleasurable one taking in the beautiful surroundings and looking out for seals. On the return journey however the wind had picked up and the fitters got a little wet from the sea spray and I have to say looked a little green around the gills... We are looking for people willing to get involved with Guiding locally, to help run unit meetings / take on the running of one of the units. Unit helpers do as the name suggests, assist at all levels during the meetings, a leader/ assistant leader is the one who will deliver the meeting with the help and support of her team - crafts, adventures, discoveries, games and life skills, aimed age appropriate.
This is not as daunting as it sounds. You are allocated a mentor, the training is similar to an
NVQ, requiring observations and evidence gathering and there are many resources to help you on your way. There is always someone who has the solutions!
A lack of adult leaders threatens the long term viability of some of the individual units.
Do you think you would like to get involved?
Below is a selection of statements, all true, to give you a taste of what guiding is all about.
● Working in a team is much easier than working alone.
● There is no such thing as failure, only a change in plans, so always be flexible.
● No song is to silly to sing and nobody sings off key.
● You are never too old to try new things.

Guiding Leaders Needed
Girlguiding UK is the largest female organisation for girls in the UK. The Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units in Briston, Cromer and Sheringham are looking for adults to help on a regular basis at their weekly meetings, ideally wishing to train to be a Leader/assistant leader.
Ladies & Gents Hair Designers
● There is no such thing as junk, only
future craft supplies. ● A girl’s smile is worth a thousand words.
● If a Guider can’t do it, nobody can. This is a selection from a list of 27 statements about Guiding.
You need a good sense of humour, the ability to turn a disaster into a success, a positive outlook, the ability to encourage, support and praise young people, keep some modicum of control but not make it feel like school. You also need to be able to do / think of several things at once, as a leader you are always in demand and the girls expect you to know how to salvage their craft disasters and make the impossible, possible. You also need to be flexible and like a challenge for which you are paid in smiles and happy faces.

Annual Open Door Art Fundraiser
Join the Open Door Art team for their annual fundraising night which this year will see the launch of the ‘Friends of Open Door’ scheme. On Saturday 29 June the team will be holding a Caribbean themed night at the Sports Pavilion, with music, food, dancing, a raffle and a prize for the best dressed.
All funds raised from the event will go towards keeping Open Door Art a fixture in Sheringham. This will enable the team of volunteers to keep running free art workshops, painting the clock tower, organising carnival events, decorating the town and railway for the 40’s weekend, and many more arts activities. The majority of the money raised will help pay for the rent of Open Door’s workshop base on the Weybourne Road industrial estate, which is essential for the running of their projects, details of which can be found on their website www.open-door-art.com.
Open door are a non-profit making voluntary organisation and are always looking for new volunteers, if you are interested in becoming involved please come along to this event! Tickets cost £12, but this includes food and automatic entry into our fancy dress competition; they can be purchased at Starlings of Sheringham.

Ladybird Nursery Receives funding towards new shelter
As part of the Sheringham Community fund, Tesco is giving a grant to Ladybird Pre-School Nursery. The money will go towards a shelter for parents as they wait for children at the end of their session. It will also protect parked buggies from the weather.
Karen, whose daughter attends Ladybird said “It will be so good not to have to wait outside in the rain”.
Louise, the Nursery Manager said, “parents will be able to leave an empty buggy in the shelter instead of having to take it home and bring it back again”.
Ladybird Pre-School Nursery is a Charity and voluntary run pre-school for 2-4 year olds. It also offers holiday activities for all children under the age of eight. The Nursery helps the children, in Sheringham, to thrive and develop their abilities and talents.
Ladybird also holds a number of events like the annual Carnival Prince & Princess Disco. The Nursery is always grateful for offers of help from the local community, particularly the skills of local trades’ people and volunteers who give generously of their time and expertise. Donations and fundraising help to replace worn out equipment and maintain the building and play areas for the benefit of the hundreds of children who pass through Ladybird’s doors. Currently we are fundraising for wooden storage units for books and toys, a filing cabinet and most expensive of all, a large new shed to replace one that leaks.
Simon Petar, Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, said: “We commend Ladybird for ensuring that these children have the best start in life. We are pleased that our grant will go towards supporting these children and their families. ”
Tesco has set up the Sheringham Community Fund which will give out small grants of up to £1,500 from a pool of £50,000 over the next two years.

Britten Centenary Award
Through the generosity of a member of the Fishmongers’ Company, the Foundation has funded a new Britten Centenary Award. The creation of this Award is to mark the Britten Centenary celebrations taking place at the school in honour of Old Greshamian Benjamin Britten. This will provide a talented musician wishing to join Gresham’s Senior School and who can demonstrate a good standard in piano performing the benefit of a music bursary.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY May News
Slightly warmer weather arrived just in time to allow the full range of spring flowers to be available for the Society’s first show of the year. Following the very late spring, which had caused the cancellation of the Cromer show, it was decided to simplify some of the daffodil classes by reducing the number of blooms that were required in some of the classes from three to one. This not only allowed members to exhibit individual blooms when they might have had difficulty in finding three of the same variety but encouraged new exhibitors.
The Britten Centenary Award was given in March 2013 to Sam Aldersey-Williams currently a pupil and Head Boy Chorister at Gresham’s Prep School. Sam’s musical career started at Gresham’s Pre-Prep School in Year 2 when he started to take music lessons. Despite only being 13 years he has developed a huge repertoire of musical experience already. He currently plays classical piano where he is working towards Grade 8, the church organ, recently completing Grade 4 and is now studying Jazz piano. In addition he is studying for Grade 7 in trombone and if that’s not enough he also takes singing lessons where he is aiming for a Grade 6 at his next singing music exam!
Sam is obviously passionate about music but it is testament to the huge range of musical opportunities on offer at the School that has helped to fuel his passion for music and performance. From his younger years at the Pre-Prep where he first learned to play a musical instrument to the Prep School where the music department has supported and cultivated his love of music. He has enjoyed a huge range of musical opportunities which has helped to develop Sam’s confidence and ability to perform in front of audiences large and small. For example, performing at the School’s Auden Theatre on a Steinway piano, participating in the School choir and School concerts as well as performing at the Kings Lynn Festival alongside other participants of Gresham’s Britten Music course. Sam has shown that through hard work, his love of music and the support of his music teachers and School it can inspire greatness.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE?
‘Know your blood pressure’ is one on the recent slogans of the Stroke Association and last month Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club together with many other Rotary Clubs across the country, cooperated with the Association to organise a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’. Almost 100 members of the public stepped into Cromer’s Community Centre (WI Hall) to take advantage of the service – 57% more than the last time a few years ago.
Surprisingly, 43% were recommended to have a routine follow-up test within a month because of moderately raised blood pressure and 7% were urged to have a follow-up within a week – three due to low blood pressure and four due to severe hypertension.
“The results demonstrate the value of routine blood pressure testing”, said Rotarian Donald Mayes, a retired pharmacist formerly with Lloyds who organised the day. “Hopefully, we have been able to a number of people identify warning signs at an early stage.”
King Henry’s Incredible Band
When a Tudor ‘band-leader’ has such an unreliable group of musicians that he is never certain whether they will turn up or not, his only solution is to play all the parts in the band himself!
When Master Robert Fitzgerald performed at St Peter’s Parish Church, Sheringham recently, this is just what he had to do. A very un-Tudor like piece of technical trickery allowed him to record all the parts himself, and fill-in for his ‘absent’ friends. He peeped behind the curtain from time to time to see if any of them had arrived.
The almost full-house was treated to a fascinating excursion into the world of the krummhorn, which looked like a sawn-off walking stick and was apparently a favourite of Henry VIII, the melodious gemshorn (as from the animal), the shawm and the string drum to name but one or two from Robert’s large collection. Even the recorders sounded very different to the schools’ version.
The music of the period included well known pieces such as Holborne’s ‘Honie Suckle’, Susato’s fanfare-like ‘Moor’s Dance’ and Praetorius’s ‘Three dances from Terpsichore’ plus many that were probably new to the very appreciative audience.
Robert Fitzgerald has generously given the proceeds of the concert to St Peter’s Church. He is also available for similar performances with the band:

St Andrew’s Methodist Ladies Group – Sheringham Our last meeting was held on Tuesday 23 April which was, of course, St George’s Day and how appropriate that the speaker was Laura Bishop, a volunteer with Help for Heroes.
Chrissy read a poem ‘A New Strength’ and certainly the servicemen and women need this in order to overcome the most horrendous injuries sustained in the name of our Country. Laura became involved with this organisation because her Grandad had died serving our Country during the Second World War and sadly his body was never recovered.
The charity was launched in 2007 and, as we all know, our two royal princes, William and Harry, are very much personally involved with this. The charity provides a road to recovery which starts at the moment of the injury and anyone whose life has been badly affected in the line of duty qualifies for support. So many of our servicemen and women have made the ultimate sacrifice and many lives have been changed forever by the wounds that they have suffered. For these selfless people it is after the guns have fallen silent that they deserve the very best support for life. The war in Afghanistan may be nearly over, but for

those who have suffered life changing injuries, their battles are just beginning and Help for Heroes vow that they will not fight these alone. Their mission is to deliver an enduring national network of support for both the wounded and their families and to inspire and enable those who have made sacrifices on our behalf to achieve their full potential.
Laura showed us several videos of some of the victims, their terrible loss of limbs and how with the help of Help for Heroes they are trying to rebuild their lives and strengthen their bodies and their minds. It made us think hard and we were all affected by their courage and determination. The journey along the road to recovery begins at the moment of injury and the casualty is flown from the point of injury to the field hospital where the medical team try to save their life. From there they are flown home to Birmingham to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and their relatives are able to stay nearby.
On Friday 4 June 2010 HRH Prince William of Wales opened the Help for Heroes Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court – the very first project which the charity was to deliver. When the casualty has recovered sufficiently they are moved to this complex to
begin medical rehabilitation when they will begin to think about their future.
Sport plays a key role in their lives and we marvelled at the courage of those trying to ski with only one leg for example. We felt we should never complain about our aches and pains and we were all humbled by these videos. Recovery and Assessment Centres work with each case officer to create an individual recovery plan. It enables the wounded to focus on what they can achieve, rather than what they cannot. Not everyone will strive to be a paralympian, but everyone can achieve a personal best. Help for Heroes works closely with other charities, including the British Legion.
Our young men and women have had their lives changed on our behalf and we, the people of this Country, not just the Government, owe them the best support in return. Sadly for some, this is a price paid with their lives, but for many more it is to return to their homes and families with life changing wounds and disabilities.
We will be making a donation to Help for Heroes at our AGM in June, the time we donate to all the charities we support.

This is a charity dance to raise important funds for the Veterans Return Fund 2014.
We will make it a memorable evening keeping it 1940s throughout – light refreshments 1940s style (as there is a war on, you know!), music by DJ UXB 40s and 40s singer Sean Andrew is not to be missed. Please book your tickets now to avoid disappointment. We have veterans local to Cromer attending the dance – let’s make this an evening for them to remember.
There will be a raffle and 1940s dress would be a big bonus if possible, if not smart dress.
Tickets available from Kathryn Smith on 07903 693905 Yours sincerely Kathryn Smith
Dear Margaret
After a fall on 16 April outside the Co-op I would like to thank Amy (first aider), staff from the Salvation Army charity shop, two ambulance paramedics (who arrived within 15 minutes) and Bob (Pegasus taxi driver) who all helped care for me and got me home safely. No broken bones, just bruises! Yours sincerely Glenise Pearse

Dear Margaret
I refer to your recent report on the meeting called by Norman Lamb about the need for more voluntary community car schemes. It highlighted the lack in Cromer and Sheringham and the surrounding area.
North Norfolk Community Transport has in fact recently started this service but with only 2 voluntary drivers at the moment is looking for more in order to be able to provide for a greater number of people needing to get to the hospitals or their local surgery. This is a much needed and greatly appreciated service so if you have any readers who would be interested in driving (expenses are paid), they should phone 01263 839009. The same number applies for those who want to book transport to their medical appointments. Missing from the list of established voluntary schemes was that which has been operated for several years by NNCT in the North Walsham, Mundesley, Stalham and adjacent areas. This scheme also can always use more drivers, as the numbers using the service in the last year has doubled. Both potential users and new drivers should phone 01692 500840. Yours sincerely Mollie Whitworth
Dear Margaret
Egmere Windpark Development Today I heard on the local radio from Norman Lamb who was opening the new facility. It is truly a great scheme which will be built upon in the future with new skills and jobs being created. However Mr Lamb had little or nothing to do with it. A great deal of hard work has been put in by NNDC and its leader, Tom Fitzgerald, along with all the checks and balances of the planning committee. No mention was made of the council without whom the scheme would not have lifted off. Can it be a coincidence that County elections are forthcoming? Plus the fact that the site is not even in Mr Lamb’s area. I believe it to be another example of "supporting" but not actually doing anything! Please let's fight a clean fight and not resort to desperation politics. District Councillor Dick Shepherd, Sheringham South

Kelling Probus Club
On Thursday 18 April the Club met for lunch at The Dales Country House Hotel, Upper Sheringham, attended by 27 Members and Guests. Our newly-elected Chairman John Dunsire introduced the Speaker Mr Michael Baker, Managing Director of C.T Baker Ltd, better known to some as Bakers & Larners of Holt.
Mr Baker’s talk concerned the history and development of the Builders’ Merchant division of the Company, the origins of which can be traced back to 1770 when John Baker acquired his business of “coal and colour merchant”, a business started by Adam Custance in 1732. During the 19th century, the Holt based business expanded into Agricultural Merchanting until farmers developed their own facilities. Building materials were not a particularly successful venture until the Builders’ Merchant business of Jack Edmunds, with branches in North Walsham and Stalham, became available in 1989, and the Baker family decided to buy it to create a major North Norfolk business activity. With the country in recession, the
timing was not good for the family in its new venture, but with new management and a lot of hard work, the three branches of the C.T. Baker Group soon began to prosper.
Now the company has expanded again by building a fourth Builders’ Merchant outlet at Aylsham, and again, the opening has coincided with national recession. Mr. Baker noted that a substantial part of the capital investment of about £1 million was necessary to comply with the raft of new Governmental regulations covering such aspects as “health & safety”, energy efficiency and water drainage to meet 1-in-a-100-year storms. But with the current housing demand, the Company is confident of success.
Several Members asked questions and Alan Chapman proposed a vote of thanks to Michael Baker for a most interesting talk. The next meeting will be at The Dales Hotel on Thursday 16 May, when Beverley Cooper’s talk entitled “In The Footsteps of Our Fathers” will revisit the sites of the Normandy Landings and liberation of Holland in WW2. If you would like to come along and join us, please call Kevin Clingo on 01263 824624.

North Walsham Organist at Worstead
Renowned organist Henry Macey, from North Walsham, will be bringing his talents to Worstead this May to accompany the local choir. The Choir Worstead will be performing Faure Requiem and other well-known classical pieces, including Hymn to the Virgin by Britten at St Mary’s Church on 18 May at 7.30pm.
It is the first time the community choir has tackled a classical concert and musical director Beverly Downes is hoping it will prove successful. “The choir members have been working hard on the material and the church is an amazing setting for the music. We hope it will attract people who have seen the choir before and a new audience.” She said the choir was always looking for new members to join and after the concert date would be ideal when the group would be working a new set of songs for Worstead Festival on 27 and 28 July.
Henry, who lives in North Walsham with wife Melanie, who has joined the choir, is organist at Aylsham Parish Church and accompanist for the North Norfolk Chorale. He also freelances as conductor, repetiteur, accompanist and organ recitalist and is president of the Norfolk Organists’ Association.
Tickets for the concert are £7.50, which includes tea/coffee or a glass of wine. Buy on the door or book on 01692 538941.
May
It’s a beautiful day in the middle of May, Not a cloud in the bright blue sky, I’m sitting on a little stone bridge Watching the trout swim by. I have a packed lunch with me No need to walk back home, Sometimes I think it’s really Great to be out on my own.
How lovely are the buttercups, This field has a golden glow, I must remember to pick a few Before I have to go.

Building Excellence award wins for North Norfolk District Council North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) scooped four awards at the 2013 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on 26 April.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of Building Control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards are a celebration of the best projects in the region (including Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk) for quality and compliance with building regulations. NNDC, building on last year’s award, were the most successful authority on the night, scooping four wins from twelve categories.
The four winners, nominated by Local Authority Building Control Surveyors, were:

BEST COMMUNITY BUILDING – Cromer Hospital

BEST TECHNICAL INNOVATION – Cromer Hospital Contractor – Mansells Architect/Agent – Purcells Client – NHS
BEST COMMERCIAL BUILDING – The Atrium, North Walsham Contractor – Farrans Architect/Agent – Tom Ground (Ground Designs) and NPS Client – North Walsham High School/Norfolk County Council. Judges called the building “aesthetically pleasing and functional, with “good sustainable features”.
Two buildings were finalists in their respective categories and NNDC Building Control made the final in the ‘Best Partnership’ category in recognition of working closely with CNC Building Control:
BEST TECHNICAL INNOVATION –
43a Norwich Road, Cromer Contractor – MB Construction (Mike Brown) Architect/Agent – SMG Architects
BEST EDUCATIONAL BUILDING – The Atrium, North Walsham Contractor – Farrans Architect/Agent – Tom Ground (Ground Designs) and NPS Client – North Walsham High School/Norfolk County Council

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver attended the event and said “What a fantastic achievement for all concerned. I’d like to congratulate all those involved in the commissioning, designing and construction of these projects and I believe the success that NNDC has achieved at the LABC Building Excellence awards is indicative of the high standards and quality here in North Norfolk. I am very proud of what NNDC, architects, builders and local people have achieved to enhance our built environment”.
The four award winners will be submitted as entries for the forthcoming national Building Excellence awards that will be held in London in the autumn.

CROMER CRICKET CLUB v LASHINGS WORLD XI ‘Mammoth Day for the Club’
The new cricket season is under way and Cromer Cricket Club is gearing up for the biggest match in its history when the Club entertains The Lashings World XI at its Norton Warnes Ground on Overstrand Road Cromer on Sunday 11 August.
The Lashings World XI are a team of former International cricketers who want to give something back to the “grass roots” of their sport and they play a number of matches around the country to raise money for local clubs and charities. This will be the first time they have ever played a match in Norfolk let alone Cromer, so it will be a mammoth day for the club.
