World Class Skatepark
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Chairman of the Sheringham Skatepark Club, Rob Sayles was delighted to be hosting the opening of the new world-class skatepark in Sheringham, reports Eric Hayton. It has taken more than 10 years and £150,000 to have the new facility built, but it looks well worth the time and money. Free to use for all, the skatepark is located in front of Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre on the Strip and replaces the old wooden facility, which basically fell apart seven or eight years ago. But the new facility is also a world class state-of-the-art skatepark, which allow in the fullness of time serious competitors from all over the UK and Europe to compete. It also features the unique concrete Ship, which Rob told me is not just a fancy centrepiece, but is 'skateable'. Not just for skateboarders, children and adults will also be able to ride BMX bikes, blades and scooters around the course. This will be an excellent location for local youngsters to enjoy themselves and socialise. Rob said, " There are not many sports where you get an 18-year-old looking after a six-year-old.”
As well as Rob, present at the opening were Trevor Ivory, NNDC cabinet member, Sheringham mayor Cllr Doug Smith and Marya Parker. The NNDC has contributed £30,000 from the council's Big Society Fund,

Marya Parker engineered serious money for the project from the Big Lottery through the Groundwork Community Spaces Fund. "The medal for this project's success has to be pinned on one man's chest," commented Doug. "Rob's drive, enthusiasm and determination to succeed against all the odds is an inspiration to us all. Helen Continuing in Family Business
Helen Wickes has been the Funeral Director at Blyth & Sons on Cremer St in Sheringham since March 2011. Step-daughter to the owner Mr Blyth. Helen graduated with an honours degree in Biological Sciences from the University of East Anglia in 2005 before joining the family business.
She first joined the family business in January 2010 as trainee Funeral Director at Lloyd Durham Funeral Services in High Kelling before also taking over Blyth & Sons Ltd in Sheringham in March 2011.
Helen decided to study for a Diploma in Funeral Directing, so recently she has been studying hard, whilst simultaneously running Blyth & Sons and the High Kelling office.
She is now pleased to announce that her hard work has paid off and that she has gained her Diploma in Funeral Directing, a qualification of which she is extremely proud.
Helen, as a fully qualified Funeral Director and a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors, continues to take pride in looking after families with great care and understanding during what is an obviously distressing time.

North Norfolk District Council to appeal wind turbine planning decision Tel: 01263 837901
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that it will appeal against the decision of the Planning Inspector regarding the proposed wind turbine at Pond Farm in Bodham.
NNDC believes that approval of the turbine, as proposed, flies in the face of the will of the local community and that the structure, which would be placed in a prominent position and could be seen from over five kilometres away, will form an unwarranted intrusion on an otherwise unspoilt landscape.
This decision could result in further applications for many more land-based wind turbines in the area, failing to take into account either the feelings of local people or the best interests of the North Norfolk tourist economy
which draws much of its appeal inland from our tranquil and unspoilt rural setting. NNDC firmly believes that onshore wind turbines detract from the unique landscape of this beautiful area, in which tourism forms the most essential element of the local economy.
Legal advice has been sought as this matter has wide implications for the economy of North Norfolk. Counsel has concluded that there are arguable grounds for challenging the Inspector’s decision and at a meeting of the Council's Cabinet this morning earlier this month it was decided that NNDC will seek to challenge this decision in the High Court.
NNDC acknowledges the development of off-shore wind turbines, as they have a very different impact. There are clear economic advantages in building offshore wind turbines with
Sheringham History Group
During our May meeting at the Mo Musem, Mr. Colin Seal talked about 'Painting the Town' in Sheringham. Mr. Seal was the artist who painted the historic pictures along the seafront and Crown approach. Colin was also involved in art projects such as the murals - Twixt Sea and Pine near W H Smith, Beach Huts on the sea wall and Train at the Railway. As part of the Open Door Art Group, Colin Seal has been an enthusiastic leader, actively promoting community involvment in The Sheringham Carnival, The Crab and Lobster Festival, The 40's Weekend and The Christmas Lights. Some examples of their art work in recent years include The Viking float for the Sheringham Carnival, Giant cut-out Postcards, and decorating with painted cladding around the Town Clock for various events including Christmas Lights.
Mr. Seal was recognised by the Sheringham Town Council in April for his contributions to the community. He believes anyone can do art and encourages people to get involved with The Open Door Art Group and the local events. Their website is www.open-door-art.com. Be sure and see the film made at the 40's weekend which the Open Door Art project hope to enter into Coast film festival.
Sheringham Society Coffee Mornings
Our first coffee morning held at St. Joseph's Church Hall was a great success. The speaker was Barry Walker Moore, also known as Barry the Bee. He gave us a fascinating insight into the life of a honey bee hive and even brought us some bees to look at. Our next speaker will be Rob Spray, who is coming to give us another illustrated talk on the incredible chalk reef which lies just off the North Norfolk coast. It is the longest chalk reef in Europe and probably the world and stretches from Overstrand to Hunstanton. Since Rob started diving on the reef, several previously unknown species have been discovered including a purple sponge. The talk is on 30 May at St. Joseph's Hall where there is plenty of parking. The doors open at 10.15am and the talk begins at 10.30. Entry costs £2 and includes tea and coffee and homemade cakes. Everyone is welcome and I know it will be well worth coming to hear Rob Spray. their associated on-shore support structures and NNDC actively encourages the benefits for the local economy from the offshore developments taking place off the coast. Its promotion of the Local Development Order at Egmere to facilitate this industry and build on the jobs already created is indicative of that commitment.
NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Benjie Cabbell Manners said, “I strongly feel that our locally-based Development Committee is best placed to take into account the facts relating to this area when considering planning decisions of this nature as they have wide implications for the residents of our often quite isolated local rural communities. We regard tourism as a vital component of the economy of North Norfolk and do not wish to see any development which would adversely detract from this offering.”
At Sun Court Nursing Home we provide a wide range of musical entertainment for residents.

Holt Festival Art Prize 2013 Cash prize and Sainsbury Centre exhibition for winner
Holt Festival is delighted to announce the second Holt Festival Art Prize following the success of the inaugural competition last year, which attracted almost 400 entries from as far afield as Scotland and Cornwall.
The Holt Festival Art Prize is open to artists everywhere. It has a cash prize of £1,500 and the winning artwork will be exhibited at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the autumn.
This year’s judges are Colin Self, Amanda Geitner and Ian Collins. Renowned Norfolk ‘Pop Artist’ Colin Self has been a major part of the art the scene since the early 60s and is a painter, sculptor and innovative printmaker. Amanda Geitner became Head of Collections and
The 2013 competition is now open and the deadline for entries is midnight 30 June. Judges will select a shortlist of 20-30 that will be exhibited at the Nicholson Gallery, Gresham’s School, Holt from 20-27 July.
The winner will be announced at a private view on 19 July. The exhibition is part of the Holt Festival Art Trail that also takes in other galleries around Holt.
Last year’s competition attracted an extremely high standard of entries with artists from around the UK submitting work. First prize was presented by actor John Hurt to Katherine Hamilton from Reydon near Southwold for her painting A temple in southern Burma. The oil on canvas picture showed a single figure in a holy place flooded with light and darkness and was inspired by her travels in Burma.
Ian Collins is an independent curator, writer and collector, Art Correspondent for the Eastern Daily Press for over 30 years and contributor to The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. He has curated the forthcoming major exhibition Masterpieces – Art of East Anglia for the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
Holt Festival Director Delaval Astley said ‘We were overwhelmed by the success of the first Art Prize and are delighted to include it as one of the key elements of the Festival. It demonstrates our commitment to the creation of new work and encouragement of emerging artists, in Norfolk and beyond ’.
2012 winner Katherine Hamilton being presented with her cheque by John Hurt CBE.
Exhibitions at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in 1998 and was recently appointed Chief Curator. She is responsible for the development, care and display of the collections at the Sainsbury Centre as well as a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Gresham Pupils Visit Leicester Tigers
On Saturday 6 May sixty pupils from Gresham’s had the privilege of travelling to Welford Road the home of Leicester Tigers. The boys were there to help launch the new Tigers’ rugby shirt for 2013-14 and carried an 18 meter by 15 meter replica on to the pitch as the players ran out for the match. As the boys entered the stadium carrying the T-shirt they were thrilled to get a cheer from the crowd! When their duties were done they retired to the stands to watch Old Greshamian’s Ben and Tom Youngs of Alysham who were recently selected for the British Lions tour to Australia. A try from Ben and some huge hits from Tom livened up the afternoon as the boys cheered on Leicester to a win.

The Norfolk Pigeon Loft, fast approaching its first year, is full to the brim with affordable inspiration selling fabulous scarves, hats, handbags and costume jewellery, catering for all ages and every style imaginable. The Norfolk Pigeon Loft started life as an online business run by Donna Cherry as an opportunity to sell her handcrafted velvet silk scarves and corsages.
It was a memorable day for both staff and pupils and the School has already been invited to attend next year’s launch.
"Our story so far is full of excitement; we’ve been open some nine months now, participated in our first Christmas and Easter in Cromer and we are looking forward to a colourful, sparkling summer, which will be perfect for our Summer hats, evening shawls and quirky jewellery." We can also have a go at bringing back to life your broken costume jewellery, whether it’s a simple broken clasp or altering the length of a necklace – we will always be happy to take a look."
What’s next for the Norfolk Pigeon Loft? "We have an on-going commitment to our shop and customers here in Cromer where we are continuing to add new stock on a daily basis. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Our branch of Cats Protection has now been in existence for nearly 13 years and we are pleased at the difference we have made to the lives of so many cats. Although most of these have been healthy, some have joined us with infectious conditions such as ring worm, toxoplasmosis, enteritis, cat flu or other infectious conditions. These have all been contained within the individual family groups and no cross infections have ever occurred. This is primarily because when cats and kittens join us they are kept to their separate family groups, in individual pens and not mixed with other cats, thereby preventing any chance of cross infection. Coming from a home or outside environment to a cat pen is in itself stressful for the cats and on occasion there has been a need to put additional barriers between the double pens to make life easier for those who do not appreciate being so close to other felines.
Another reason why we have not experienced cross infections is the cleaning regime that takes place on a daily basis. Bedding areas are wiped clean and floors swept and washed each day. Disinfecting the litter trays and replacing the litter, washing the food and water bowls and replacing any soiled bedding also help contain any problems. On those occasions when we have had cats that have had an infectious condition their pens have been the last to be attended to. With some conditions it has also been necessary to don protective clothing or in one instance when a fosterer was caring for cats and kittens with different infections, she changed her outer clothes before going from the first to the second family and then again before going in to her own animals.
One benefit of taking these precautions is the complements we receive from visitors on the cleanliness and lack of catty smells in the pens (unless an unneutered tom has recently taken up residence) of which our fosterers are justifiably proud. It does take up quite a lot of their time but at the end of the day it does pay dividends.

Flystrike in Rabbits
Between April and October it is really important to check your rabbit twice a day for a condition called ‘MYIASIS’, more commonly known as ‘FLYSTRIKE’. In the warmer weather blow flies lay their eggs in the fur of rabbit’s hindquarters especially if the rabbit is debilitated by some underlying health problem such as obesity, dental disease, diarrhoea, arthritis or a skin wound. Dirty hutches and runs are also very attractive to flies so always make sure you are cleaning soiled areas daily. www.miramarvets.co.uk Check your rabbits hindquarters morning and evening throughout summer as this condition happens FAST causing serious skin damage. The fly larvae hatch in the fur of the rabbit and burrow into the skin and flesh of the host resulting in shock and septicaemia, a potentially fatal combination. Products are available to help prevent this condition. Prevention is far better than cure where ‘flystrike’ is concerned as a cure cannot be guaranteed. Miramar Vets 7 point plan for a tip top bunny 1. Check your rabbits hindquarters at least twice a day 2. Make your rabbits hutch insect proof by using thin mesh over doors and windows 3. Use preventative medication on your rabbit regularly through summer 4. Keep your rabbit at the ideal weight 5. Feed a balanced diet rich in hay and grass to promote digestive health and therefore avoid diarrhoea or weight gain 6. Clean your bunny out regularly, this may mean twice daily removal of soiled bedding in the summer months 7. If you find maggots on your rabbit contact the vet IMMEDIATELY, the faster we can act the better the chance of survival Natalie, one of our qualified nurses, has a keen interest in rabbits and is on hand to offer advice on husbandry and preventative healthcare, just give her a call on 01263 822293.

STEVE THRILLS BRISTON CROWD!
It's a long way from Dorset to Briston, but keyboard superstar Steve Hubble made the long journey on Friday May 10th. to thrill a capacity audience at the Copeman Centre, Briston, with his wonderful performance using his twin keyboard set-up based on the amazing Yamaha Tyros. His incredible show really did have something for everyone - including a Barbra Streisand medley, the theme from the film 'Out Of Africa', some Herb Alpert numbers, a very convincing orchestral version of 'The Blue Danube Waltz', the 'Pink Panther' theme, and the Carl Jenkins haunting 'Palladio'. It was no wonder the crowd applauded so loudly, such was the quality of Steve's music no wonder he sold so many CDs during the
interval. Steve recently appeared on TV's 'Celebrity Big Brother's A Bit On The Side' to much acclaim, and you can also hear him in action on YouTube.
Proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments were donated as usual to the Copeman Centre's funds - a very useful £128, and the stall raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance made a very respectable £70 too! The next in the series of Briston Organ Shows is on Friday June 21st, when top organ star David Thomas will be playing on one of the latest Roland digital organs. Advance booking is always recommended for these very popular live music events, and tickets (just £6 each, juniors £3) can be reserved by 'phoning 01263 860844.
If you like good live music played to perfection, do come and join us for this next show - you will be very welcome, and will definitely have a great evening's entertainment!
News from the White Horse, Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
Summer is almost upon us and we are preparing for a busy season and looking forward to introducing our new menus to our regular dinners and the many holiday visitors who enjoy their holidays in North Norfolk.
We have received lots of postive comments about our ‘Taster Menu’ and I am pleased to announce that we are to continue with the menu until the end of June.
Our special ‘Family Sunday Roast’ will remain on the menu for the coming weeks. It’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast and we believe it’s real value for money.
Our new Wine List has been well received, offering diners some exciting new wines whilst retaining some of our most popular bottles.

From Pot to Plate
– The Norfolk Crab and Lobster Cookbook
Elliott Bloomfield and John Lee Published by Red Flannel Publishing
Two local authors and a local publishing company have worked together to produce From Pot to Plate... The Norfolk Crab and Lobster Cookbook.
This beautifully illustrated 64 page book will further enhance the reputation of Cromer crabs and lobsters as the tastiest in the world.
Elliott Bloomfield is the head chef at Cromer’s
Rocket House Café and John Lee has crab fishing in his blood, carrying on a tradition that has been passed down in his family for at least eight generations. It is not only the fishing skills that have been passed down to John, but the knowledge of how to “dress” a crab as well as recipes for turning the crabs into tasty meals.
Like John, Elliott was born and raised in North Norfolk and after studying for a degree in engineering he worked at a London based design consultancy, but his real passion was cooking. After a few years he quit his job and moved to California to gain professional experience as a chef, ultimately returning to Norfolk to join his sister and brother in law after they opened the Rocket House Café in Cromer.
Pot to Plate features a range of recipes from the simple, such as the crab sandwich and a crab dip, through favourites like crab crostini and potted crab to the more sophisticated crab pappardelle and tagliatelle with spicy lobster and tomato ragu. Every recipe is well illustrated withphotographs showing both the methods and the final dish.
The book is, however, more than just a cookery
Beeston Becks Spring Clean
book as it gives an insight into the world of crab fishing through the profile of John the fisherman as well as photographs from John’s family album. A further two pages show “The elements of crab fishing”.
The publisher behind this project is Steve Appleyard who set up Red Flannel Publishing when he retired to East Runton and has written and published a number of Norfolk guide books including Norfolk Beaches, Children’s Norfolk & Suffolk and recently Dogs Welcome in North Norfolk.
SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER«
On Saturday 27 April the Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group set about its first stream clean of 2013. This was an organised ‘stream clean’ in the way of a litter-pick along the Back and Top Common’s becks and was carried out by regular member, David Braithwaite who joined with Francis Farrow, the Beeston Common Hon. Warden.
The morning clean-up followed a sharp hail shower, however, by the start of the litter-pick at 10.30am the sun was out and it remained pleasant throughout. Three large plastic sacks of rubbish were collected including a rotary clothes line, plus the usual assortment of plastic bags, bottles and cans from along the bank of the loke.
AFTERNOON TEA ON THE LAWNS Classic cakes, sandwiches, loose-leaf Enngglish tea and Matthew Algie coffeee 2.30 ² 4.30PM E VERY THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY FROM WHITSUN
Around the Dew Pond, Cuckoo Flower and Water Crowfoot were seen in flower and Three-spined Sticklebacks were noted from the becks. The next stream clean will most likely be held in June/July so please look out for the posters and lend a helping hand if possible. If you are interested in joining in with this and similar projects and would like to be contacted before the next meeting please email Francis at hon.warden@btinternet.com Sheringham Independent 368 May 25th 2013

Sheringham Community Centre
A quick look round the brilliant, modern Community Centre is enough to make anyone want to be there. I was taken round by key-holder/caretaker Gerry Burgess, writes Eric Hayton. This state-of-the-art building is already attracting substantial interest from groups interested in hiring the many different sized rooms, attractively priced. The Main Hall on the ground floor (see photo opposite) can seat over 200, has a projector screen and substantial kitchen and measures, in old money, about 48 ft x 44 ft. It has a sprung dance floor, French doors opening on to a fenced-in lawned garden, which makes it suitable for wedding receptions or children’s parties and playgroups. It also has a removable stage. Upstairs there are four more rooms available, combining the two of them can make a 44ft x 21ft space, the other two making 21ft x 16, once again there are kitchen facilities, identical to those for the Main Hall. Modern toilets on both floors and a lift between the floors completes the picture. Of course there is substantial free parking available at the front and sides. Later this year it is expected that the council offices will be relocated here, as well as holding council meetings. Anyone interested in having a look should contact the Denise Medler, town clerk, or deputy Sally Gill on 01263 822213 or email shercouncil@btconnect.com.

Roll up your sleeve for World Blood Day
Blood donors will be recognised all over the world next month as internationally acknowledged World Blood Donor Day is set to take place on Friday 14 June. Falling during National Blood Week (10 to 16 June), World Blood Donor Day recognises the birthday of Dr Karl Landsteiner who discovered the ABO blood group in 1901. Blood donation and blood grouping are as important as ever. Hospitals across England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day, and it is vital that NHS Blood and Transplant collects the right amount of the different blood groups to provide the blood patients rely on to survive. Individuals across the region have the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and donate at a number of donor sessions in June. Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said “During this year’s National Blood Week, we are hoping to encourage people in the local area who have never given blood before to commit to give blood for the first-time and to remind those who have not given for some time, to come back and donate. Please come and help us to provide the blood that hospitals and their patients need. A donor saves and improves lives every time they donate – and you could too!” Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

Sheringham Lifeboat
‘The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch - Sunday 5 May
The Sheringham Lifeboat was launched at the request of Humber Coastguard at 15.13hrs on Sunday 5 May to go to the assistance of a swimmer thought to be in trouble. The swimmer was reported to be approx ½ ml off shore off West Runton Car Park. The incident occurred approximately one hour before High Water. The tide was flooding against a 7 knot easterly breeze. The swell was estimated to be ½ metre. The partner of the swimmer was very concerned when after about ½ hour he did not return to the beach and phoned Humber Coastguard who in turn tasked Sheringham Lifeboat to attend. The Lifeboat was duly launched and located the swimmer as he finally reached the shore safely. Launched with good intent.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
The Club held a “hands on” evening in April, when members and guests brought along their choice of flowers and, after a demonstration by two of our ladies, went on to create arrangements of their own. The atmosphere was very cheery and chatty, and some very innovative and colourful designs emerged.
May has so far been busy, starting with one of our ladies creating a stunning arrangement which was displayed in the window of Lloyds Pharmacy for all to see. We then welcomed Gill Shanks of Peterborough to our monthly meeting with her theme ‘A Blooming Good Read’, an unusual title and one that Gill portrayed brilliantly with her six beautiful arrangements, all of which gleefully went home as raffle prizes to the lucky winners.
We have now settled very comfortably into our new venue, St Andrew’s Methodist Church on Cromer Road, and Judy Barham from Norwich will be our demonstrator on 6 June with her theme ‘A Colourful Collection’. We meet at 7pm for refreshments and a chat, before our 7.30pm start.

Spring has arrived…
…and at last we can begin concentrating more on our gardens; often a great place to start is our lawns.
Following last year’s wet weather moss is a common sight. Iron Sulphate is most commonly used to remove moss. We recommend a liquid type applied with watering can or pressure sprayer, though lawn sand can also be used if spread evenly and correctly.
Moss will quickly turn black and the following week you can scarify your lawn. This can be done with a metal fan rake or powered scarifier and the aim is remove all dead moss and grass. If your lawn is compacted you can use a fork to wiggle the roots around, creating aeration in the soil.
Following this you can remove any large weeds and apply seed to any patches. A high-nitrate feed can also be applied in Spring, though great care must be takens as too much can cause unwanted weeds and may even burn the grass. Again, we recommend a diluted liquid unless you have access to a spreader.
If you love flowers, even if you are not an arranger, why not come and join our friendly group. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month and guests and visitors are always welcome. Shirley on 01263 825059 would be pleased to tell you all about us.
By following these simple steps and with the most basic tools you can help to ensure you will have a beautiful green lawn all summer long.
The meeting which took place on 7 May followed the usual format of lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton followed by a speaker, but numbers were swelled as a result of the decision to invite lady guests on this occasion. The event was so successful that we have established this as a new tradition for our May meetings.

North Norfolk Labour Party
As Labour candidates contesting the county council elections in North Norfolk, we would like to thank everyone who voted Labour in May. The Labour vote across North Norfolk increased by 137% since the last county elections in 2009. This time we came very close to winning in North Walsham West and came second or third in four other divisions. The results show that North Norfolk will be a four horse race at the general election in 2015 - between Labour and three 'Tory' parties. Only Labour can stand up for ordinary people in tough times.
Labour will continue to campaign in our local communities on the issues that are important to local residents. We would urge Labour voters to join us in these campaigns and join the Labour Party to help build a better North Norfolk.
With many thanks for your support on 2 May. Denise Burke Chair of North Norfolk Labour Party Thrums, The Hill, Happisburgh, Norfolk

Dear residents & visitors to Sheringham
There have been several complaints regarding the cleanliness of the town centre - with that in mind we had a meeting with Sheringham Enhancement Group, The Chamber of Trade Commerce, various departments of the NNDC, Kier & Sheringham Town Council. We all agreed that the streets could and should be cleaner. This letter is a request for all our residents and visitors to our town to help us by taking part and “doing their bit” to keep our streets as clean as possible. We are writing to all our local traders requesting they do the same. If like us you are proud to live in Sheringham it is a small price to pay if you pick up a piece of litter and put it in the bin even if it isn’t yours. If a bin is full you could telephone Kier 0300 123 1163 and advise them. There is an ongoing campaign for Dog Fouling at the moment, we would ask all who have dogs please, please pick up after your dog. As a tourist destination and market town the worst thing that could happen to us is for dogs to be banned from our Town Centre. In the current financial position it is up to us all as individuals to each play a small part in keeping Sheringham clean and tidy and make it a town to be proud of. Chamber of Trade and Commerce Sheringham Enhancement Group, Sheringham Town Council
Dear Margaret
Dear Margaret
My name is Chris, and my wife Chloe and I would like to ask for your readers’ help and support to raise both much needed funds and awareness for the fantastic work done by the staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in central London.
On the 13 July we are holding a Charity Disco with a Raffle & Auction, the night having a “Doctors and Nurses” theme, at The Links Hotel in West Runton.
In April 2012 our son Kieran was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), also known as a ‘hole in the heart’. As the ‘hole’ has not repaired itself and this in turn has slowed his growth the decision was made at the end of last year to operate. From the moment we were told, the support we have received from the consultants right through to the booking team has been second to none. On 20 May this year he will travel to GOSH to have surgery to repair his heart. Although this is a relatively straight forward procedure the stress, heartache and upheaval for our whole family has been incredible. This is where we thought of what we can give back and how we can help GOSH.
Tickets for the night are available from Dawn Fresh Greengrocers, The Chocolate Box and C&C Windows in Sheringham. Tickets can also be purchased from ourselves (telephone 01328 316041 mobile 07765 085617 or email skybluebubble@sky.com. We hope to have further places selling tickets in Cromer and the Runtons in the near future. Yours sincerely Chris & Chloe White
From a window at the back of my house I can clearly see the large expanse of land being prepared for the construction of the new Tesco Supermarket. I have watched monster machines rip up well established trees, knock down two perfectly good houses and remove yet one more of the few remaining areas of green grass in the town. In addition, I have experienced my house being shaken for a number of days while the ground on which this Megastore will be built was compacted and as a result of which cracks in my neighbour’s property have appeared.
So I start wondering about this company which has been given permission by ‘our representatives’ to come marching into our town with their hobnail boots, giant contraptions and huge, profit-driven scheme. And, during my research on-line into its affairs, I come across its ‘Annual Report and Financial Statements for 2012.’ And, there, on page 96, I discover that it is in debt to the tune of approximately ten billion pounds. Yes, that’s right! You read it correctly! 10 billion pounds! I am forced, therefore, to conclude that a percentage of everything we buy in its stores must go towards servicing this debt.
But, in my opinion, an even more serious consequence of this method of arranging human affairs, i.e. via debt-fuelled growth, is that one day this whole economic system is going to collapse and we are going to be left with a huge white elephant on our doorstop. Well, bring it on, I say! Perhaps then - but, hopefully, long before this or some other cataclysm occurs - we will have started to think about taking back control of our lives and surroundings from remote and distant bureaucracies, especially in Government and Big Business, and organising our own affairs for and by ourselves.
Then, once this more advanced system is introduced, we, the residents of Sheringham, will be able to decide for ourselves, amongst many other things, how this now abandoned site could be used – maybe, as a community facility, with the trees and grassed areas restored, while our shops are given over to making available as many locally produced, necessary and useful goods as is possible. NORFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION 2013 Dear Margaret
I would like to say a huge thank you to all who have again put their faith in me to carry Sheringham Division forward for the next term of Norfolk County Council.
As a local man it is a great privilege and honour to be given that trust during what is a very difficult time for all.
We do live in a wonderful part of the world, a safe and thriving environment, with marvellous support of many, many volunteer groups, I do intend to keep it that way.
We are all in this together. Brian Hannah County Council Member for Sheringham and Beeston Regis
Dear Margaret
May I through the medium of The Sheringham Independent express my gratitude to those members of the Sheringham community who had the trust and confidence in me to cast their votes for me in the election of 2 May.
We tried. Noel Gant
Dear Margaret
I am writing to thank everyone who voted in the County Elections on 2 May in Sheringham and Beeston Regis. I was honoured that some people chose to support me and I would like to especially thank those who contacted me or took the time to talk to me on the doorstep. I would also like to say a huge thank you to all those kind people who helped in my campaign and especially Richard Shepherd who was, and continues to be, such a great person to work with. I found that there was substantial support for the ideas that I had for Sheringham and I will continue to push for them to be implemented.
Rhodri Oliver District Councillor Sheringham South Deputy Leader NNDC

FOXGLOVES, FULMARS AND FUDGE
All gardeners are busy at this time of the year getting their gardens, hanging baskets and containers ready for what we hope will be a sunny summer. However as we walk around the garden centres looking for geraniums, petunias and busy lizzies we should spare a thought for the wildlife all around us and choose some plants that provide shelter and food for birds, insects and other creatures.
If you have enough room consider planting

a tree and pick one that is friendly to wildlife. Willows are trees rich in insect life, 250 species of insect have been found harbouring among their leaves and branches (do not grow a large variety too near your house). In autumn their seeds are a favourite food of siskins, redpolls and other finches. Other trees that attract insects and which are suitable for small gardens include the rowan, field maple and hazel.
There are also flowering plants to choose which attract insects and birds and increasingly garden centres are clearly labelling ‘bee friendly plants’. As well as adding colour to your garden well chosen plants will support a vast number of moths and butterflies as well as bees and other insects. These insects, and in late summer the seeds of the plants, will be eaten by a variety of birds.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has a list of recommended flowers to grow to attract insects and birds including –Foxglove, Valerian, Pinks, Thyme, Godetia, Cosmos, Cornflower, Candytuft, Michaelmas Daisy, Marjoram and Sunflower. As a general the more simple and open the flowers the more likely they are to be good for wildlife.
The affinity between gardeners and wildlife can be illustrated by the news that Nigel Colborn, the garden writer and one time presenter of Gardeners’ World has been awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour. This is the highest award made by the Royal Horticultural Society and the number of
holders of the medals is strictly limited. If you look carefully at Alan Titchmarsh when he presents the Chelsea Flower Show you will see a tiny badge in his lapel which shows that he is also a proud holder of this medal.
Nigel is a great bird lover as well as a great gardener and he is also a frequent visitor to North Norfolk. He spent his school days at Beeston Regis and writes in a recent blog about his joy in seeing fulmars returning to the cliffs where he saw them as a schoolboy. He writes fondly of this area as follows ‘The most wonderful coastal features, between Sheringham and Cromer are the cliffs. These are not proper cliffs, towering majestically and holding the sea at bay with indestructible granite or steadfast slate. No, no. These cliffs are tired, folded, collapsible and nsubstantial...made of glacial till, they have the consistency of fudge – not the bendy fudge that is offered, for example at Sheringham sweet shop Fudgetastic – but the crumbly sort you make at home’
He also writes about the sand martins nesting in the cliffs and describes this area of cliffs, breakwaters, birds and waves as a perfect picture, ‘so lovely so stark, so Norfolk’ and finishes by stating ‘I’d love to live here again’. Nigel’s blogs can be read on ‘silvertreedaze.blogspot.co.uk’. Bob Wilkinson Photo is of the cliffs between Sheringham and Cromer that Nigel Colborn writes about
