East Coast Warriors do the Double

Congratulations to East Coast Warriors under 12 football team who completed the double by winning the North East Norfolk Youth Football League title for the second

consecutive season and also the Cup, for the first time, in a season where they went unbeaten in all competitions.

East Coast Warriors are based at the Sheringham Recreation Ground on Weybourne Road behind the “Splash” swimming pool, where all home matches are played on a Sunday.

This coming season will see the team moving up from nine-a-side to 11-a-side, in the under 13 age group, and the coaches and existing players would welcome any new players who wish to join a fun and friendly team.

For further information and details please contact: Chris Long on 07786 654559 or cj.long@tesco.net Ed Copeman on 01263 821796 or alicopeman@btinternet.com

Join the 2013 Sheringham BeachLife team this summer The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people on Sheringham sea-front last August attracted crowds of youngsters, and the organisers are now recruiting volunteers to serve on the team for this year.

Last summer, the activities kicked off each day with the “Beach Special”, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Lees for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme. Guest appearances from the Funky Chicken and “Mr Cornetto” with his bizarre ice-creams added to the frolics. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch. The afternoons saw a “build a boat” challenge on the Sheringham boating lake, mini-Olympics at the High School and a tide fight on the beach. There was a circus-themed afternoon with barbecue on the last day, when the Lees resounded with screams of laughter, as nearly 100 children and young people enjoyed circus activities, stocks, plate-spinning, sumo-wrestling, space-hoppers, and a bouncy castle.

Evening activities for over-11s included a treasure hunt around the town, swimming at “The Splash” and a “quiz and chips” evening, all of which were well attended.

This year’s outreach will run from Tuesday 27

E-mail Rev Peter Skivington at to Friday 30 August 2013, anyone wishing to youth@sheringhambaptistchurch.co.uk or join the team is invited to submit an application phone 07919415554. form, which can be downloaded from the website. “BeachLife has been a huge success, and large numbers of children and young people have had loads of fun whilst finding out more about God" said organiser Pete Skivington, "But we intend to build on that success, and are planning for this year's outreach to be even bigger, brighter, and possibly louder than last year.”

Group (PPG) - June Monthly news

The role of the Nurse Practitioner (NP)

It is a year since the Sheringham Medical Practice employed two Nurse Practitioners, Jeanette Rigby and Angela Helmsetter. They are both very experienced and qualified nurses who have undertaken extended training to enable them to see patients with a wide variety of conditions and minor injuries. Both of them are able to prescribe medications, organise investigations such as X -rays and blood tests and refer on to secondary care if needed such as physiotherapy, dermatology and the breast clinic.

There is a Nurse Practitioner on duty every weekday morning and afternoon. Patients do not have to go through the telephone triage system and can either book appointments in advance or on the day. They are also available for telephone advice if required.

The NP service enables the Doctors to have more capacity to see the patients who have more complicated and time consuming conditions.

If you would like to speak to someone confidentially in the PPG, either with a concern or you would like to get involved then please do contact Pauline Craske, (Practice Manager) Tel 01263 820512 or Noel Gant (patient member)Tel 01263 825538.

The Practice’s patient newsletter will be available in June.

Woodgate Nursery Garden Show raises £647.96 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance

Over 3000 visitors were treated to a wonderful weekend of gardening inspiration at the recent Woodgate Nursery Garden Show. From Chelsea Flower Show inspired garden designs and willow weaving demonstrations to birds of prey displays and a children’s treasure hunt there was something for everyone. Mrs Joice from Hoe said " We come along to the show every year and just love the show gardens and talking to the garden designers. We think it’s wonderful because we can find solutions to all of our gardening needs in one place and we also love coming to Purdy’s Tea Room, their cakes and lunches are just delicious”.

The winner of this year’s best show garden, voted for by the public, was won by the

into character and dressing up as land girls. KJ Myhill Building and Gardening Services came second with his courtyard garden featuring a hand built pergola and water feature. Erin Flock won top prize in the competition and will be receiving £75 worth of garden vouchers to spend at Woodgate Nursery.

Woodgate Nursery would like to thank all the exhibitors for their hard work over the two days and everyone who visited for their kind donations.

Pictures from this year’s event can be seen on the gallery pages of the Woodgate Nursery website www.woodgatenursery.co.uk

Beetroot pappadelle, Blakeney mussels, basil and pinenut pesto cream sauce, rocket and parmesan

The sun has come out and our sous chef, Ally Streatfield, has come up with a great pasta recipe that I’m sure will feature on our specials boards all summer. The scullery has been festooned with gorgeous spinach and beetroot pasta hanging to dry, which is a great sight and very much enjoyed by the owner’s children. However it wasn’t enjoyed quite as much by their grandfather, who has been hunting around for his garden twine which had been ‘requisitioned’ by Ally to drape his pasta over...

We’ve hit the summer season with a bang – full houses over both Bank Holiday weekends and the pleasant surprise of an AA Gold Award and Dinner Award last week. We’re lucky enough to have a great staff and it’s a reflection of all their hard work and dedication. And to celebrate we’re putting on a summer-long lunch deal – groups of four get one meal completely free. So get your nearest and

dearest along to see us for lunch this summer – 01263 512412 to book! BEETROOT PASTA 9oz pasta flour / strong white bread flour 6 egg yolks One cooked beetroot (pureed) Tbsp olive oil Tbsp celery salt Place the flour and all the other ingredients into a blender until it’s of a nice doughy consistency. Roll out with a pasta machine and cut into 2cm ribbons. MUSSELS 200g Blakeney mussels ½ white onion 1 clove garlic Cup white wine 250ml double cream 1 tbsp pesto (see below)

Heat up a pan and the finely diced onion, then the garlic. Place in the mussels, add ½ cup of white wine, the tbsp of pesto and double cream (250ml will be enough). Cook until the mussels open. At the same time, boil the dried pappadelle then add to the mussels in the pan. Serve with toasted foccacia and top with some lovely fresh rocket and a little bit more parmesan.

PESTO 1 bunch of green basil 100g toasted pinenuts 1 clove of garlic 200ml olive oil 100g parmesan

Blend the basil, add the garlic and parmesan, blend a little more then add the rest of the oil and flavour.

Matters to Consider when Buying a Property By Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr When buying a property, particularly if you are a first time buyer, there are many matters you should consider.

One issue is the costs involved in buying a property. The largest expense when buying a residential property is usually the Stamp Duty Land Tax which is normally payable if the property you are buying is worth more than £125,000. It is important to budget for all the expenses you will incur during your purchase. They include legal fees, a Land Registry fee and search fees with the local authority, water company and others.

If you plan to renovate or extend a property you should check to see if it is a listed building or in a conservation area, as this will affect what you are allowed to do. You might need to apply for planning permission or listed building consent before beginning work. In addition, you may also need to apply for building regulations approval - your Solicitor

or the local Council will be able to give you more information.

There can also sometimes be restrictions in the title deeds to a property requiring consent from a third party before an extension or conservatory is added. It is important to find out if this applies to your property, and this is normally explained during the conveyancing process.

When buying a flat it is important to check how many years are left on the lease. Most mortgage lenders require a minimum of the mortgage term plus 25 years, and sometimes longer than that. Your seller may need to arrange for the lease to be extended if there are not enough years left.

If you want to renovate a flat, there may be restrictions in the lease limiting what you can do with your property, such as preventing you from knocking down any internal walls. Your Solicitor will be able to advise you on this in more detail.

JAPANESE KNOTWEED

www.brgardeningservices.co.uk

I have been asked to raise awareness to local people regarding the incidence of Japanese Knotweed being found in Sheringham. This is a Non Native Invasive plant species (see picture) which is notoriously difficult to control once it has become established.

A root which can extend up to 7m from the plant and reach 3m or more in depth (particularly of note is that it can undermine footings and some mortgage lenders will not lend should there be such on the property)

If you find Japanese Knotweed on your property you need to take immediate action:

• Seek advice from Conservation Officers on how to treat and destroy it. • Obtain advice on suitable herbicides particularly near watercourses. • Seek advice from the Environment Agency on disposal of plant material.

As a landlord or tenant it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside act to spread the species around the countryside.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY JUNE NEWS

The Sheringham Horticultural Society is celebrating the retention of the cup awarded at the annual Inter-Society Quiz between garden club members from Cromer, Hoveton and Sheringham. The Community Hall in Cromer was packed with keen gardeners, made up into tables of four, but it was one of the Sheringham teams comprising Jo Hayton, Sally Quarterman and Judy and Bob Wilkinson that finally triumphed after trailing at the interval. Thanks are due to the Cromer members who organised a very successful evening, with a delicious buffet and challenging questions on horticulture and general knowledge.

The next event on our calendar is the visit to Holt Hall on Thursday, 20 June for a guided tour of the gardens with tea and cake. Members should meet at 3pm at Holt Hall but I would appreciate a call from anyone who intends to be present to ensure adequate refreshments are available.

BILLIARDS and SNOOKER PLAYERS WANTED

Would you like to attend the league presentation and finals night as our guest? It will be at the Morley club on 15th June, finals start at 7-30 pm followed by presentation of trophies and a buffet. The ALBY BILLIARDS DARTS AND SNOOKER LEAGUE was formed in 1932 “to foster and improve the games of Billiards, Darts and Snooker in a sporting atmosphere”, in the North Norfolk area. At its height there were 18 Billiards teams who also had a darts team playing at the same time and venue and 48 Snooker teams in three or four divisions. Over the last few years this has gradually diminished to 5 Billiards teams that no longer play any darts and 7 snooker teams. To allow this league to continue and again grow in strength we are looking for new players for the Billiards and the Snooker teams or new 6 man teams that play in the Holt, Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley, North Walsham, Aylsham and Hevingham area. If you are interested in playing Billiards or Snooker in a friendly atmosphere and are free on Thursday night for Billiards or Monday night for Snooker please contact General Secretary who will advise you of your nearest club. If you can form a full team we will be welcome new teams or returning teams and venues. The league AGM will be held in Aylsham on 15th July where the league fees are collected and new teams nominated so any applications should be made known to me as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. Dave Curtis Alby League General Secretary Mobile 07586 035605 or email albybdsl@outlook.com

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Twenty four members and one guest met at The Dales, Upper Sheringham on Thursday 16 May.

After lunch, Chairman John Dunsire introduced Mrs. Beverley Cooper who gave a fascinating talk entitled “In the footsteps of our fathers” in which she described how she and a friend Melanie Hare retraced the route their fathers had taken in 1944 after the Normandy landings Melanie’s father was Lt. Col. James Hare, serving with the Ox & Bucks Regt. and Beverley’s father was Pvt. Cliff Turner, serving with the Highland LI.

They set off in June 2005 on a 2500 mile journey which was to take them to Juno Beach in Normandy, and eventually to the town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch in Holland where Melanie’s father had been killed, she being just a baby at that time. Their route took them over the Pegasus Bridge, taken by glider troops, to La Bijude, a desolate spot where 36 men died, and Pierrefitte, where some German sentries disguised as trees had been caught in amusing circumstances.

Everywhere the two ladies went they were greeted with the utmost kindness, help and respect, and they were able to put together a remarkable collection of memories and memorabilia relating to those epic days. They crossed the Seine at Les Andelys, and the Somme at Amiens , going through Belgium, and entering Holland at Eindhoven. It was at ’s-Hertogenbosch where they were enquiring about a girl who, as a teenager at the time of the Allied liberation, had been seriously wounded by a bomb, only to find that they were actually talking to her husband. Beverley concluded her talk by showing us a Heuer 10 inch bladed knife which her father had taken from a German POW at Calais after VE day. David Coslett proposed a vote of thanks to Beverley for such an interesting and emotional account.

Secretary Geoffrey Goodman read the minutes of our last Meeting, and the Chairman called for a Committee Meeting on Tuesday 27 May.

Our next Meeting is at The Dales on Thursday 20 June, when Cllr. Brian Hannah will talk on “Restorative Justice”.

If you would like to join us, please call Kevin Clingo on 01263 824624.

EMPLOYMENT PLUS LOCAL (E+ LOCAL)

“Work for all” was a corner stone of William Booth’s (the founder of the Salvation Army) social programme outlined in “Darkest England and The Way Out” and the first job centre was established by the Salvation Army as early as 1890.

Today independent evidence demonstrates that good, worthwhile work is important to physical, mental and spiritual health. The Salvation Army’s belief is that every individual is important to God and helping people to discover self worth through work, not only improves their self confidence and motivation, but helps contribute to their own, their family’s and their community welfare.

within a supportive environment. Attending E+ local is entirely voluntary, absolutely free and is available to any unemployed person who is looking for work.

The primary activities at E+ local are to provide back to work support and to support the government’s new Digital strategy by improving awareness in the community.

We would want to provide:

As a leading provider within the voluntary sector, with roots into community and a powerful motivation to work “with heart to God and hand to man” The Salvation Army has an opportunity to provide a bridge between unemployed people and the local labour market.

EMPLOYMENT PLUS LOCAL in Sheringham commenced at the end of last month at The Salvation Army Centre in Cremer Street running between the hours of 10am -12noon initially. It will be a place where unemployed people can find information and guidance on their journey into employment,

• Access to resources such as Computer/laptops

• Access to both local training opportunities and basic IT courses to acquire new skills or improve existing ones.

• Help, advice and guidance to apply for jobs, including completion of job applications, CV writing and interview techniques. • A secure, friendly, inviting place where one to one or group learning activities can be undertaken.

• Time! - an important ingredient when Job Centres are busy and have limited time to give to each client.

• Tea and Coffee

New Attraction in Briston!

With so many country pubs closing these days, it is really encouraging to see one that has been given a new lease of life.

The former ‘Green Man’ at Briston has now reopened as the ‘Explorer Bar and Coffee House’.

Situated in Hall Street, just a couple of hundred yards south of the Copeman Centre, the new venture is already attracting loads of favourable comments from both villagers, holidaymakers, and other Norfolk residents who want a comfortable place for a pint, a coffee, or something to eat. It has been completely refurbished throughout, and has loads of car parking right outside, although locals will no doubt make sure their evening stroll will just happen to include this part of Hall Street!

Access to such facilities has the potential to change lives of unemployed people in the area. Due to the fact that the nearest Job Centre is in Cromer and the surrounding areas are very rural, the establishment of this programme will could be of great benefit to many people in the villages that surround Sheringham.

What is the + element? Barriers to finding work are diverse and often take a long time to address. Employment Plus Local can become a familiar signposting point, directing people to a range of resources and advice within the community. There may be domestic or health issues, debt, housing problems or addictions or other challenges that require long term support. What an employment plus local can add is a friendly, caring environment where people are interested in the whole person, providing a personal, holistic and longer term response – providing continuity, without pressure where the participant can steadily progress at their own pace.

There are many stories around the country where people have been helped by Employment Plus locals – “Work for All” on the salvationarmy.orguk/employmentplus site gives some excellent illustrations and we want the people of Sheringham and the surrounding districts to have all the help they can get in finding meaningful employment, and cope with the ever changing digital world.

St. Andrew’s Methodist Church Ladies Association

At our meeting of Tuesday 14 May we welcomed back Patrick Thompson for his third visit to give us an ‘Update on Royalty’.

Patrick, who has now retired, was Deputy Master of Household for the Queen, and still has links with the royal family. Patrick is a natural and relaxed speaker, so his talk was more of a rambling chat than a structured speech although obviously, being a very loyal subject of Her Majesty, he could not give away too many secrets.

On 2 June it will be sixty years since the Queen’s Coronation. Patrick pointed out that soon she will be the longest reigning monarch ever, surpassing even Queen Victoria’s long reign. This led him on to reminding us that if we know of any 100th birthdays or diamond wedding anniversaries approaching, we cannot expect the Queen to have a list of all those upcoming events to hand so that she can send a card. It is up to friends and relations to tell her, and to send in a copy of the relevant birth or wedding certificate to ‘The Anniversary Officer, Buckingham Palace’ in good time. When the postman delivers a card they are

supposed to be signed for, since they are considered to be valuable items, but one of our members who received a diamond wedding card recently says she doesn’t remember signing! There are many, many more of these special occasions nowadays than when the Queen began her reign.

Patrick wondered whether any of us had been to any of the open days at Buckingham Palace. While there he had purchased an apron from amongst the ‘Luxury Goods’ at the Gift Shop, only to discover that it had been ‘Made in China’! He complained, and was told it came from a UK supplier, but he insisted that the Gift Shop should take pride in selling only British products from such a prestigious outlet. As a result, he is now sent any new Gift Shop contracts to peruse before they are signed.

Patrick feels very privileged to have had so much contact with our Queen, and told us that he felt God had suited her uniquely for her role. She has very blue eyes and the wonderful ability to make whoever she speaks to feel they have her whole attention. She also has a keen sense of humour. She wholeheartedly entered

into the James Bond helicopter stunt for the opening ceremony of the Olympics. It seems that life in the royal household has changed considerably in the last few years, since the Queen Mother died. Previously, there had been quite a Victorian atmosphere. Patrick also told us that the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall were very close, and that the two princes were glad that their father was with the woman he loved, although of course they would always adore their mother.

It was a pleasure to listen to Patrick, who has a special knack for accents, and could range from the royal accent when he spoke about ‘Sarndringham’ to good, broad Norfolk for a Norfolk tale. Patrick grew up in Lowestoft, and now lives in Gorleston. You might have caught a glimpse of him on TV at the opening of Parliament where he was ‘all scrambled egg and feathers’ as his father used to tell him, in his official uniform. We hope it won’t be too long before we have another update from Patrick.

We are now looking forward to an outing to see ‘The Sound of Music’ on Cromer Pier, the Flower Festival, and our AGM before our summer break.

YOUNG OPERA SINGERS IN GALA CONCERT

On Saturday 6 July The Auden Theatre, Holt will resound to the fabulous sound of the combined forces of Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Norfolk Symphony Orchestra.

This feast of choral and orchestral music will celebrate 80 years of music-making by the local choral society. Under the sparkling baton of musical director, Nathan Waring, this performance will also celebrate the centenary of the birth of composer Benjamin Britten in a unique way. As well as performing his beautiful Te Deum in C and Jubilate Deo the choir will perform Gounod’s magnificent, yet rarely performed, Messe Solennelle de Sainte-Cecile as a personal tribute to Britten who was born on St Cecilia’s Day in 1913. St Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. And, all very fittingly, this concert will take place in the Auden Theatre at Gresham’s where Britten himself attended school.

The orchestra will also perform Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite – most suitable for what should be a very English summer evening which will include an extended interval so that the audience and musicians can enjoy an extended interval and picnic on the lawns outside the theatre. A wine bar will be available. A similar picnic concert in 2012 proved highly popular with a capacity audience and this year’s event is expected to do the same.

Tickets available from the Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 priced £15 (£12 concessions – students and OAPs – under 18s FREE)

The soloists are three young opera singers, two with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Emma Smith soprano; Gavin Horsley bass) and one with Glyndebourne (William Knight tenor).

Another feature of the programme will be Saint-Saens fabulous Symphony 3. Known as the “Organ” symphony followers of the Babe movies may recognise the theme tune! For this extravagant performance, Nathan Waring will hand over his baton to Lawrence Tao, assistant musical director, and take to the keyboard on an organ which will be moved into the theatre especially for the occasion.

Have you noticed the difference at the National Trust? Quirky signs encourage people to enjoy the outdoors...

Visitors to National Trust places in Norfolk will be forgiven for doing a double-take as they read signs telling them Keep on the Grass, Please Do Touch and RESERVED: for fun and games.

The colourful signs, which at first glance look like warnings or instructions, are part of a fun campaign by the Trust to encourage people to enjoy the natural world all around them.

The conservation charity also wants to challenge out-dated misconceptions that it is all about rules or is a bit stuffy. It aims to make it easier for families in particular to feel comfortable exploring the great outdoors by breaking down perceived barriers or restrictions.

Ben Cowell, the National Trust’s Regional Director for the East of England, said “The National Trust cares for some truly special natural places, such as woodlands, heaths, parks, beaches, gardens, fields and nature reserves.

“All of these places come to life in May and June, with bluebells, buttercups, rhododendrons and roses in bloom, while some of our most colourful wildlife, such as songbirds and butterflies, start to make an appearance.

“We know from research that some people still view us as being very formal with lots of rules and regulations. I would encourage those people to come along and see how we have changed over the years. We are experts at conservation of our built and natural heritage but we also make sure that we offer enjoyment and access to history, wildlife and outdoor experiences too. We think these new signs are a fun, tongue-in-cheek way to help people reconnect with nature and enjoy our outdoor places to the full.”

The signs show messages like:

• ATTENTION! You will need this to spot the abundance of wildlife in this area • QUIET PLEASE – and take time to hear the birdsong • PHOTOGRAPHS taken from this spot look fantastic • PLEASE DO SIT HERE – it’s such a lovely spot

Visitors will be able to spot the signs at Blakeney Point, Blickling Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Sheringham Park, Oxburgh Hall and the Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre from the end of May and throughout June.

Grumpy Old Man

When I was a boy, a visit from the doctor was an important event. On each occasion I was routinely and carefully examined. A general appraisal of my appearance and colour, whilst I sat mutely with a thermometer stuck uncomfortable under my tongue, preceded observation of the state of my ears, eyes, tongue and throat with a little torch and a wooden spatula employed with close analytical attention – ‘say aaah …’

My pulse was taken, my back sounded with rhythmic taps of his fingers. Out from the black medical bag came the stethoscope and I sat fascinated as Doctor dabbed the business end around my thorax and abdomen, his eyes unfocussed and non-committal, murmurs of uh-huh, ah-ha, hm-hm accompanied his aural exploration of my inner workings. All this took about ten minutes.

A rash or a pattern of spots usually produced a quick and certain diagnosis, particularly so if some of my pals were similarly afflicted, but the examination routine was never skimped or skipped. My mother was instructed regarding my care and a prescription issued on the spot. This was before the advent of the NHS, so there was always anxious but careful consideration before sending for the doctor because his fee was settled by the patient, so the call for his services was never casual or

frivolous and his care and attention earned his living. Back then doctors were almost exclusively male and generally were held in very high esteem in the community and accorded great respect and deference.

When the NHS was established, the ethics of the profession and its relationship with the community carried on habitually, much as before, except poorer people were relieved of the anxiety of bills for medical attention which previously they could not afford.

The system was still essentially local run on traditional lines and worked pretty well as complaints were rarely heard.

Fast forward to today and the NHS is in a pickle. Political interference over decades with more centralisation and diktats from a burgeoning bureaucracy has gradually

crushed the medical profession into a cynical conformity in which the computer and the telephone are now the first response to the ill or wounded. General practitioners work office hours from grander premises and don’t turn out to visit the sick if they can avoid it.

Inefficiency is rife and the national organisation is so hopelessly huge and overblown it has become unmanageable.

Call for entries for the Graham Allen Award Renovation projects and new buildings that sensitively capture the distinctive character of our local architecture could be in line for a prestigious award from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

Entries are now being sought for this year’s Graham Allen Award, the annual NNDC award for excellence in conservation and design.

The closing date for entries is 30 June, 2013 and the award will be announced in September.

Inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late GS Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the Graham Allen Award recognises the scheme which makes the biggest contribution to North Norfolk’s unique built heritage.

During the lifetime of the awards, a diverse range of projects have been recognised for their excellence, ranging from the new cloisters and refectory building at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham to the innovative contemporary design of Curve House at Edgefield, and last year’s winner, The Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.

For more information, or an entry form, please visit www.northnorfolk.org/planning/12799.asp or contact Paul Rhymes on 01263 516367, email: paul.rhymes@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Award Winning Beaches

Buckets and spades, ice-creams on the prom and award-winning beaches, North Norfolk’s seaside resorts are some of the best in the country – and that’s official.

Keep Britain Tidy announced last month that North Norfolk has four award-winning resort beaches, offering visitors great facilities, a litter free and safe environment and, in the case of Blue Flag awards, meeting the highest international water quality requirements.

Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts in 2013 are Cromer, Sheringham and Sea Palling. All three are continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised with the awards of Blue Flag status last year. And this year East Runton beach has been 20

Call for entries for NN Environment Awards

Schools, small businesses, local community and voluntary groups in North Norfolk are being invited to enter one of the district’s most prestigious environmental awards. North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) ‘John Sweeney Award for the Environment’ is now open for entries from local organisations who have been involved in environmental projects in the district. Any organisation that has worked to cut their own or others’ impact on the environment, or been involved in projects that have protected or enhanced the local or global environment is invited to submit an entry before the deadline of Friday 21 June. The awards are now in their 19th year, and continuing last year’s format the winner of the John Sweeney Award will be presented with a prize of £500 and a commemorative plaque, with all shortlisted entrants receiving a certificate. Last year’s joint winners were a low-carbon new-build scout hut in Mundesley and a local environmental education programme based at Holt Hall. Details of all past winners and runners-up and a copy of the entry form (also available by post from NNDC) can be found on the North Norfolk District Council website www.northnorfolk.org/environment/215.asp. Entrants are assessed on how they have made a contribution to the environment, for instance by reducing their environmental impact, improving natural spaces or raising environmental awareness, and judging of all shortlisted entries will be carried out by a small panel in July. The awards will be presented at a ceremony during NNDC’s major environmental event of the year, Greenbuild, at Felbrigg Hall in September.

Anyone interested in entering or who would like to nominate an organisation in their area, should email sustainability@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 01263 516331.

awarded the new Seaside Award, recognising its high standards of beach management.

Cllr John Lee, Cabinet Member for Environmental, Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “We are delighted that three of North Norfolk’s Blue Flag resort beaches have retained their awards this year and that East Runton has achieved the new Seaside Award. This, following the excellent comments we received in the Good Beach Guide earlier this year, confirms the district as a wonderfully clean, tidy and safe place to live and to visit, with some of the best seaside resorts anywhere.”

Five North Norfolk beaches, these four plus Mundesley beach, were recently awarded the

highly sought after ‘Recommended’ status in the Marine Conservation Society’s ‘Good Beach Guide’, which demands stringent water quality standards.

To qualify for a prestigious Blue Flag resort beaches must achieve a high standard of bathing water quality, something that’s regularly monitored. But that’s not all. They must also show high standards of environmental education and information, such as clear signs and beach-related activities and events; environmental management, such as clean and accessible toilets and beaches, with regular beach cleans; and safety – bathers at all NNDC Blue Flag beaches are protected by RNLI Lifeguards.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We recently had a young cat of about eight months old handed into our care which was a stray and obviously quite poorly. First priority was to get her to the vets immediately to discover what the problem was and to commence treatment. It was apparent to the vet that Millie was having great difficulty breathing and an x-ray quickly identified the problem. This poor little cat had either been in a road traffic accident or been kicked and had a punctured lung due to damaged ribs. The vet had reservations as to her chances of surviving and prescribed steroids and antibiotics to give her the best chance possible. It was then down to her fosterer to provide lots of loving care and ensure she was kept calm and quiet to help her recover. It is now a month since Millie came into care and she is so much better. She will be gradually taken off the medication and we are hoping that, providing another x-ray indicates her lung continues to mend, she will be fit and well enough

Meet Benson … A Muddled "Tail"

Described as white and black or black and white, a big, strong boy who is sometimes afraid of his own shadow, can run really fast but spends most of his time in bed not moving, aged 4 years (28 in human terms) but is a big baby, or should I say puppy, loves making his own bed in his kennel but hates going into the kennel after a walk.

This is Benson, a very handsome greyhound waiting for a home in Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinder's kennels. Benson's bed, like himself, is always in a muddle, he had a great racing career without ever quite reaching the heights but above all he absolutely adores people and loves to play, be cuddled, stroked, fussed, groomed, hugged and talked to.

He is a muddled character but will make a lovely, loyal pet for someone.

If you would like to meet Benson, get more information, or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797

to be neutered in a few weeks.

At our recent Plant Sale in North Walsham we raised nearly £600 for the cats in care. We thank everyone who supported us either by providing plants or coming to the sale. The winner of our Raffle was Mrs. Jenny Bates from Little Melton. Plans are now being finalised for the Hog Roast on Sunday 23rd June which will once again take place at Stephanie’s home in Dilham. Tickets, still only £10 each, are now available by contacting the “cat phone”. Why not come and join us? We usually have a good time including those fined by the dreaded “Car Park Attendant”.

We recently had a call from someone whose cat kept going missing. She was upset as she had discovered that a neighbour was feeding her cat and encouraging it to go into her home although she had asked her politely not to. This is unfair on the owner and on the cat and it should not be encouraged to stay unless with the owner’s agreement. It could also, of course, be classed as stealing should the cat take up permanent residence. If the owner is happy then that is a different matter.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

The 'one-stitch facelift': Can one little stitch knock off a dozen years? What is a One Stitch Face Lift?

The idea for the procedure was prompted by an old Hollywood trick in which actresses used tape to pull slackened skin upward, taking great pains to hide the tape with hair or wigs. A Cosmetic Surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills took the concept and developed a procedure that would accomplish the feat more permanently.

How is the procedure performed?

The One Stitch Face Lift is a minimally invasive procedure offering Face Lift like results, but without the need to undergo major surgery and resultant prolonged recovery. It is a brief procedure performed totally under a local anaesthetic. We have modified it slightly so that instead of relying on one stitch, we use a few hidden stiches under the skin. There are few risks associated with the treatment and, due to its minimally invasive nature; it is safe for patients with diabetes, heart conditions or other medical problems. Most people find they

are able to return to normal activities the following day, but as there may be some associated swelling or bruising with the procedure, some may find it more comfortable to take a few days to recover.

What results will I see?

What alternative treatments are available?

The results are subtle but are often just enough to give patients a fresher and firmer appearance. Patients who are looking to achieve subtle results without prolonged recovery time will really benefit from this procedure.

What are the risks?

You can have non-surgical treatments such as a liquid facelift, a full or modified facelift or the innovative laser facelift.

With any procedure there are risks such as risk of bleeding, bruising and infection. Minimally invasive nature of this procedure however minimises these. Another name for this procedure is a Facelift Retighten, which enables patients whose facelifts have started to sag due to the ageing process to get an extra lift.

What are the costs?

The fee for one stitch facelift is £1750 which compares very favorably with the cost of a facelift under a general anaesthetic.

SEE THE MONSTERS THAT OUSTED STEAM

During the 1960s, steam locomotives were swept away as British Railways’ Modernisation Plan introduced hundreds of diesel locomotives. Love them or loathe them, diesels transformed our railways, and their contribution to railway history is being celebrated by the Poppy Line at a Diesel Gala, which runs from Friday June 14 to Sunday June 16. The Gala is sponsored by diesel enthusiast magazine Railways Illustrated.

Star of the show will be the huge “Peak class no.45133. The “Peaks were built over 50 years ago for the Midland main line, and feature a massive 264 litre, 2,500bhp marine-type engine. Top speed was 90mph. Enthusiasts are looking forward to the sound of this mighty engine as it climbs the 1-in-80 gradient from Weybourne to Holt!

The event will see a bigger range of diesel engines than ever before on the Poppy Line. A diesel shunter will be giving brake van rides. And if all the activity raises a thirst, there’s a beer tent at Sheringham Station and some on-train refreshment.

Fish ‘n’ chips will be on offer on the Friday and Saturday – when trains after 6.00pm will be at reduced fares, and the fish ‘n’ chips will be free!

Gala Rover tickets give unlimited travel all day on any train, and cost just ÂŁ16 adult, ÂŁ15 senior citizen and ÂŁ8 child 5-15. Under 5s go free.

NNDC’s First Floor Gallery presents:

A mixed-media exhibition by Mike Pert - 21 May – 22 July

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a stunning new exhibition featuring photographs and collages from local artist and photographer Mike Pert.

The exhibition includes atmospheric black and white photos as well as colourful abstract shots from north Norfolk and other locations around the world, along with vibrant mixed media collages.

Born in 1947, Mike studied art for three years from 1964 to 1967. He has regularly exhibited in joint exhibitions throughout the UK, with previous solo shows at The Henderson Gallery in Edinburgh, at the National Trust’s Blickling Hall, Aylsham, and Wimpole Hall, Cambridge, at the Coast Festival 2012 and previously in the NNDC First Floor Gallery.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

The Gallery Plus Spring into Summer Exhibition

A great selection of two- and three-dimensional artwork by well-established and new artists from around the UK. New for the summer is Paul Evans....

Paul is one of the leading landscape painters working today. He is widely known for his highly individual watercolours and acrylics inspired by East Anglia's landscape and coast. Paul finds himself drawn to quiet places off the beaten track, sometimes spending the whole of each day just recording the changes in light and weather - painting as much as possible on the spot, together with quick colour notes and drawings for further work in his studio. His paintings convey a deep sense of place and come from places very familiar to him, to which he returns on a regular basis.

Gallery Plus has an open and airy exhibition space, boasting unrivalled natural light. There is an on-going mixed show of original paintings, original prints, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, and more. The main aim is to offer something different from other galleries in the area. The exhibition space is regularly updated, so you're sure to see something new every time you visit. Trevor Woods’ Contemporary Art Studio is also on site and open to visitors all year round.

B-Max Tested

I had the opportunity to test drive the Ford B-Max supplied by East Coast Motors in Beach Road, Cromer, reports Pete Smewin.

The B-Max is the Ford model between the Fiesta and Focus and is a really good recent innovative and ingenious addition to The Ford range.

It comes in three styles, Studio Zetec and the top of the range Titanium. The model I drove was the mid range Zetec.

It is a five-door, the rear doors are sliding and when the front and rear doors are open give you an impressive unobstructed 1.5 metres opening making it easier to load and unload, especially when you are strapping children into a child safety seat. The B-Max achieves this by concealing its central strengthening pillar within the doors rather than in the body side giving you the unobstructed opening. The front passenger and drivers seatbelts are housed within the seat structure rather than the bodywork which was the only thing that I had to get used to.

The range consists of four petrol engines including the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine which gained Ford the prestigious engine of the Year award in 2012.

The Zetec model I drove also features the Ford EcoMode driver information system, which is a smart software monitor of your driving style. It displays the impact on your cars fuel economy, which definitely helped me change my style of driving. This was a delightful experience to drive this well equipped and responsive compact car and I could not fault it for comfort, ease of driving and its loading and unloading capabilities. All in all this is a very classy little car. Prices start from just £12,995.

I would urge you to give Adam or Graham, at East Coast Motors (01263 513181) an early telephone call to book your test drive in this impressive car. I do not think you will be disappointed.

A host of loyal excited fans thronged Cromer Pier on Friday 31st May hoping to get their photograph taken with ventriloquist Steve Hewlett who is competing in this years Britain's Got Talent The very talented and popular ventriloquist did not disappoint, inviting fans up onto the stage of the Pavilion Theatre to have their picture taken along with Arthur Lager Steve's cheeky and very forthright puppet. As always Arthur stole the lime light saying of Steve "He wouldn't have a job if I was not around". Steve said he was looking forward to performing in the semi final in front of judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden and says no matter what happens in the competition Cromer and the Pavilion photo courtesy Carla Marfleet Theatre will always be one of his favourite places to perform. Steve was placed 'in the top three' of last weekend's show. Shadow act 'Attraction' won the outright place in the final based on public vote, leaving the judges to decide between Steve and singer Jordan O'Keefe for the second place in this Saturday's final - judges votes were even so it was down to the public vote to decide. Unfortunately this went in favour of the young singer, leaving Steve in third place. But all may not be lost - there is one last chance of a place in this weekend's final by wild card - who will the judges choose as their wild card? Good luck Steve.

Springwatch in my Backyard

Couldn’t resist this photo of father blackbird feeding just fledged (31st May) youngster. We have been watching the breeding pair build their nest, which took about three weeks. Thenabout two weeks ago we noticed them taking extra food in the evening back to the nest. Then came the squeaky voices of feeding. And today there are 3 fluffy cute things flapping about in quite ungainly fashion. Brilliant.

June Wedding

June is a special month, The month I chose to marry, I remember the day so well, The cream roses that I carried, The rustle of my silk dress, As I walked up the aisle, Then seeing the man I love, Turn to me and smile. But that was 50 years ago, The world is changing fast, As we sit in our garden, And reminisce about the past.

New General Manager for Cromer Pier

Openwide Coastal Ltd is delighted to announce the appointment of Rebecca Wass to the role of General Manager of Comer Pier and Pavilion Theatre.

Rebecca joins Openwide Coastal to lead the growth of Seaside Special and all the Pier’s trading operations into new markets and comes with a wealth of experience in the local area and throughout communities in Norfolk. With a solid background in theatre management with Live Nation at both the Beck Theatre and Sunderland Empire, Rebecca has also gained experience within the museum and attractions industries and is well placed to optimise all elements of the unique and exceptional attraction of Cromer Pier. Openwide Coastal manage the Pier and Pavilion theatre on behalf of North Norfolk District Council and produce the UK’s oldest and most successful full summer season variety show, Seaside Special, now in its 36th year and still performing to over 45,000 people every summer.

John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “The Pier and Pavilion Theatre are important not only for Cromer but for the whole of the north Norfolk coast. They are iconic attractions, providing enjoyment and entertainment for tens of thousands of local residents and visitors alike, throughout the year. The council looks forward to continuing its excellent relationship with Openwide Coastal Ltd, who manages the Pier and Pavilion Theatre on our behalf, and wishes Rebecca every good fortune in her new role.” Rebecca’s diverse career has also seen her training and developing young people throughout many differing communities in Norfolk and her network of contacts with community groups will prove to be a great opportunity for the Pier and our Seaside

Special show to reach into new areas of the community and encourage a new generation of lovers of variety and “live” family entertainment.

Keep Trade Local and get to know your North Norfolk businesses!

The Federation of Small Businesses is holding an event at Fakenham racecourse on June 20 for you to see the small businesses that exist in North Norfolk and what they have to offer. Nine out of ten businesses in the UK employ less than fifty people, with small firms often providing services and creating fantastic products from their homes or a small office space. Unlike large firms, who often have advertising budgets and shop fronts to attract customers, small businesses can be reliant on word of mouth. Derek Baldry, who runs RAS accounting in Sheringham, has been in business in the town since 1997, trying to give small firms more of an edge over the big guys. Derek has previously worked in the army, as well as previously being a retail manager for a national chain. It is this ‘big business’ experience he is now passing on to the small firms which make up his customers. By measuring the purchase and selling activity of these firms each month, he is able to tell them how well they are doing, before the end of the year when for some small firms it may be too late. Helping small businesses to be proactive in facing any issues they may have is just one of the ways they can grow. The benefits to using a local business are numerous - for every pound you spend with a Sheringham firm around 70p stays in the local economy, compared to a maximum of 30p if you choose a national business. Local firms also know their community and will often be involved in supporting it in a number of ways. For Derek his long attachment to North Norfolk gives him even more of a passion to help the businesses within the area thrive. Show your Business, at Fakenham Race Course, will be a great opportunity to see how when you choose to support a local business, you are often indirectly supporting a chain of other small firms, such as Derek’s, who help keep these businesses ticking over. The event aims to show you a small business that you might never know existed, whether for a service like accounting, or an artisan producer! If we don’t use our independent and high quality firms, we are in danger of losing them and North Norfolk losing its quaint and unique charm.

The Prince of Wales stand will be open from 2pm until 6pm. For further details please visit www.fsb.org.uk/eastanglia If you are a business interested in taking a stand, please visit www.showyourbusiness.eventbrite.com
