Visitors flock to the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Over the weekend of 18 & 19 May a record number of people flocked to the fourth annual Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.
The skies were at times overcast but the spirit of the Festival saw people turn out in their droves to a crowded Cromer on the Saturday and into a sunny Sheringham on the Sunday.
Local businesses have reported an upsurge in trade with local B&Bs, hotels and caravan parks reporting full houses and return visits specifically for the Festival. Many local businesses have reported one of their busiest weekends of the year. One local cafe in Cromer said “we've had a really busy weekend, it's been absolutely full on in the kitchen!”
Festival president Hilary Cox said “even the grey weather on Saturday didn't dampen the wonderful atmosphere or cool the charisma of the festival, it was a fantastic weekend”. A family visiting the Festival and staying locally said “What are the dates for next year? We want to make
NEW COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE!
sure we can book in to the B&B in good time”.
With over 40 events, this year’s Festival offered activities and entertainment for all the family across the weekend. The Festival kicked off in style with a sell-out Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday night. Compered by the fabulous Olly Day the audience were treated to finely-crafted folk music by John Conolly, a beautiful display by Marlene’s School of Dance, comedy from Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer and the buoyant sea-side sound of The Sheringham Shantymen. Visitors flock to the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival
Continued from front cover... The weekend saw the Festival’s now traditional mix of superb seafood, scintillating street entertainment, music, comedy, film, seafood competitions, traditional seafaring craft demonstrations, local food and craft stalls and the Festival’s Cookery Theatre.
This year the Cookery Theatre played host to an array of demonstrations by local and notso-local chefs and master seafood specialists. Audiences were shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year offered a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that got the audience’s mouths watering and their taste buds tingling”. In Cromer this was hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar from Woodforde’s which included the Crab & Lobster Festival ale. One visiting family said “We're from Lyon in France, this is just a lovely event... you're all so friendly and helpful, and we love the cookery sessions”
Unfortunately the ever-popular World Pier Crabbing Championships had to be postponed due to rough seas on the Saturday. However
this has been rescheduled for Sunday 25 August when the Festival hosts its annual charity auction on Cromer Prom.
Scores of people queued up to take part in the Crab Dressing Demonstrations hosted by Julie Davies and accompanying this there were demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making.
Children at the Festival were entertained by Punch & Judy shows, craft events and street entertainment for the whole family. Adults and children alike were fascinated by the tank of live crabs and lobsters at the Festival which was hosted by the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.
Local museums offered a host of events across the two towns and on the evening of Saturday 18 May, the premiere of a new film entitled ‘Crabs & Shannocks – The Longshore Fishermen of North Norfolk’ was screened in Cromer.
The Festival, which has been hailed as the most successful so far, is enthusiastically looking forward to 2014 with the dates provisionally announced as
16 – 18 May 2014. As one family said of the Festival “We've come from Leicester each year since you started, we love it and this is certainly the best yet”.
The committee would like to thank everyone involved in the Festival – the sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, performers, chefs, stall holders and visitors – without whom, the Festival would not happen.
Events continue until mid-August with the Seafood Trail and the Festival’s Lovely Lifebuoy Art Trail. A leaflet containing both trails can be picked up at Cromer or Sheringham Tourist Information centres. The Seafood Trail has been attracting avid seafood followers since it launched at Easter, one family following the trail in Sheringham said “We've been here all day, it's been wonderful and we've managed to eat at three places... it's the best seafood we've ever tasted!”
Sheringham History Group
At our June meeting Tony Nelson, in a different role from his usual one as Town Crier, gave an informative talk on the history of Sheringham Little Theatre.
Tony set the scene by describing the social and economic times after the Railway arrived in 1887. Crabs were being exported and the railway brought people to Sheringham. Money was flowing and big houses and hotels were being built. It was soon realised people needed something to do. Thomas Wallace and Richard Carter built a secular hall sponsored by Jarrold's printing.
Silent films were shown in the 1900's and during the First World War it was known as the Electric Picture House. Tea rooms were added and it remained a picture house until 1960. Sheringham Urban District Council took over when the picture house closed. With great foresight SUDC did not sell the plot, but allowed the theatre to remain.
The first summer repertory season was the summer of 1960 and by 1961 it was known as Sheringham Little Theatre. In the early 1970's local government was re-organised and the SUDC eventually turned over the Little Theatre to volunteers, at a peppercorn rent, who kept it going. After two successful lottery bids in 1996 and 2007, Sheringham Little Theatre has become increasingly professional in Box Office and Front of House with a new hub and decor. There is also new digital film equipment, increased outreach to young people, improved fundraising, and an annual community show. Finally, Tony shared with us his personal philosophy "you only get the maximum benefit if it is live, live concerts, live theatre".

CREEPY HOUSE Launch on Saturday 20 July 10-12.30pm at Sheringham
Library or sign up any time during the school holidays. Creepy House activities every Thursday 1.30pm - 3pm. Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge at Sheringham Library Dare you enter the Creepy House? There's a spine-tingling adventure waiting for children when they take part in the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge – Creepy House. They can join the adventure at any Norfolk library during the summer holidays. Pick up a pack and explore the Creepy house, discover it’s secrets and meet some of the hair-raising residents! Read six books and collect stickers that reveal the creepy residents of the house. All children who read six or more books will be presented with a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement. Look out too for the Mungler Top Trumps cards to collect and swap with family and friends. Children can choose any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books or picture books. Audio books and e-books count as well, so long as they borrow them from a library. Are children in Sheringham brave enough to explore The Awful Upstairs, The Gruesome Ground Floor and The Spine-tingling Cellar?
Volunteers Wanted
We are looking for Challenge Champions during the summer holidays to help with Creepy House activities and talk to primary school age children about the books they are reading. We welcome people of all ages but this is a good opportunity for young people 13-18 to share their passion for reading and help us run the summer reading challenge. Try something different this summer and volunteer in your local library. For library opening times visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE NORFOLK NURSERY NETWORK • Creake Plant Centre, South Creake, Fakenham – Wide range of shrubs, herbaceous and climbers, many rare hellebores, old roses and salvias
• Hoecroft Plants, Wood Norton – Ornamental grasses, variegated and coloured foliage plants
• Norfolk Herbs, Dillington, Dereham – Herbs, scented pelargoniums, bay trees and terracotta
It may have been an awful winter and disappointing spring for us gardeners but we should spare a thought for the specialist plant nurseries in our area. The large garden centres can survive such difficulties because they have diversified their products and have restaurants, cafes and similar attractions which bring in customers regardless of the weather but this is not so easy for the specialist Norfolk Nurseries that just concentrate on producing a huge range of plants and they need our support and custom.
We are very fortunate in Norfolk to have a network of specialist nurseries who have joined forces under the title ‘The Norfolk Nursery Network’ to grow the best plants for our garden and offer expert advice and service. Between them, these eleven nurseries have more than 16,000 species and varieties of the finest quality plants available, some of which can be ordered online.
The network comprises the following nurseries
• The Plantsman’s Preference, Diss – Hardy geraniums, ornamental grasses, unusual perennials and woodland plants
• Reads Nursery – Growers of high quality fruit trees
• The Romantic Garden Nursery , Swannington – A specialist nursery of mature trees and shrubs, topiary, terracotta and lead planters
• Thorncroft Clematis, Reymerston – Extensive range of clematis
• Urban Jungle, Old Costessey – Palms, tree ferns, bamboo, bananas, cannas, gingers and grasses
• Walnut Tree Garden Nursery, Rockland St. Peter – Herbaceous perennials, ornamental trees, shrubs and roses
• West Acre Gardens, West Acre, King’s Lynn – Wide range of plants including an extensive range of alpines
• Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham – Over 600 varieties of perennials; shrubs, trees and climbers, fruit trees and bushes, seeds and bulbs, annuals and veg. Plants

A leaflet setting out full details of opening hours etc. for each nursery is available from Tourist Board offices and in this leaflet Alan Gray, from Radio Norfolk’s Gardening programme states ‘Anyone can grow and sell plants but members of the Norfolk Nursery Network have the expertise and knowledge of their subject to offer the very high standards that are required to become a member of this august group’. ‘When you buy from a nursery affiliated to the NNN, you are assured of quality and value and your purchases will have been grown to the highest quality’.
Some of the members of the NNN will have stalls selling plants at the following events (Please check with the nursery website or telephone if you want to ensure that a specific nursery is attending) • Sandringham Flower Show, Wednesday 31 July

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, a progress report on Millie the little cat mentioned last time. On a follow up visit her vet was so delighted with the progress she had made that she decided it was safe for her to be neutered. The operation was carried out the same day and Millie is now back with her fosterer and by the time you read this she will also have been vaccinated and chipped and ready to be put up for adoption. Wonderful news for this delightful little cat, who has battled to fitness with the care and attention she has received from her fosterer vet. Roger, another young cat has also been causing concern but happily, he too, is now up for adoption. He originally came into care with six other cats and had settled into a new home as the only cat. However, after a few weeks, he developed balance problems and holds his head to one side. Because he had an eye infection while previously in care, antibiotics were prescribed to see if the problem improved. In the meantime his new owner fell over him and was concerned this could happen again so it was agreed that we should take him back. As there was no improvement to his condition further investigations

were necessary. As his symptoms indicated that he could have FIP blood tests were taken and thankfully although initial results indicated this could be the problem the results of all the blood tests ruled this out. Tests were also undertaken for FIV and FELV and these were also negative. X-rays were then taken to see whether the problems were caused by problems in the inner ear and clearly indicated this was not the case. His vet concluded that the problem could either be caused by a tumor or a vascular bleed. A course of steroids combined with antibiotics were prescribed and his response to these indicate he did have a vascular bleed which has caused some scarring, the cause of the balance problem. Now of low dose steroids we are hoping that in time his balance will be restored, although there are no guarantees. Roger is now looking for a new home. He is a very friendly lad, who loves receiving a fuss, rolls over for tummy rubs and loves other cats. We all love him. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
New Practice OPEN in CROMER
We opened the doors to our new practice in Cromer on 3rd June. After a few teething problems with the computer systems, all seems to be going well. We have had many visitors through the doors, some with appointments and some to just have a look, we welcome them all! The purpose built surgery has 3 consulting rooms, a laboratory www.miramarvets.co.uk and will eventually house a large pet shop at one end. Sometime in the future we will be adding a theatre and kennel rooms so we can operate at the site too. We would like to welcome Ruth Farall to our team at Cromer, she will be running the practice and pet shop and with past experience in the shop environment and knowledge of veterinary products, she will be happy to advise you. If you would like to come and see us just pop in to Unit 1, Old station Yard, Norwich Road, Cromer. Or give us a call on 01263 513976. Please note – there has been NO CHANGE to our Sheringham surgery facilities or hours, we are still open all day, every day Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings – at Sheringham and Cromer too!

Sparkling End to Probus Year
s
AB
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club’s outgoing Chairman, Ken Macnish, was surprised when the AGM was interrupted by the Restaurant Manager of The Links Hotel, Jason Brown. On behalf of Mackenzie Hotels, Jason presented Ken with a bottle of champagne to mark the end of his year in office.
Ken thanked Jason both for the unexpected presentation and for the excellent service which the club has received over the past year from Jason and all the other staff. He also mentioned the members’ delight at the demise of the previous difficult cutlery.
The usual business of the AGM was then
conducted. All of the committee members were thanked for their work over the year and it was acknowledged that it had been particularly difficult due to the sudden and untimely death of Peter Cooper, our former Secretary. Matters were concluded with Ken inaugurating Dave Vickery as Chairman for the coming year. Dave expressed his thanks to all the members who had welcomed him into the club exactly three years ago. He said that he is constantly surprised by the number of people to whom he talks that seem never to have even heard of Probus, so his goal for the forthcoming year is to raise the profile of the Cromer and Sheringham Club and Probus generally. The speaker programme has been designed to help in that endeavour.

West End Star Liz Robertson is Special Guest at Sell-out Amateur Show
The well known actress Liz Robertson was the special guest of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society in Cromer earlier this month.
The Society, which was putting on the musical, The Sound of Music, had had sell out performances all week, crowned with standing ovations most nights. Liz and her husband Patrick Deuchar were at the final performance on Saturday 1 June, and after the show, Liz signed the theatre’s guest book and was presented with a posy of flowers by the two youngest actresses, Nina and Emily, who shared the role of Gretl, the youngest von Trapp child.
Liz played the role of Maria in the Sound of Music at Sadler’s Wells in 1992, so was no stranger to the play. The Society put on a musical each year at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer, as well as two plays at Sheringham Little Theatre to raise funds

for their chosen charity. This year, their chosen charity is Parkinson’s UK. The actress Jane Asher, wrote to the society to send her best wishes for the show and to tell them about her work as President of Parkinson’s UK.
audiences, cast and crew raised a recordbreaking £2437 during the week for our chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK - a truly wonderful result from a memorable week.
The Society also received letters from Nicholas Hammond, who played the part of Fredrich in the original film, and Johannes von Trapp, the youngest son of Captain and Maria von Trapp, also sent a letter wishing the company a successful run.
The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic Society, who will be celebrating their centenary next year, are already getting ready for next year’s musical, ‘Oliver!’ which will be just one part of the year long celebrations and fund raising events planned for this award winning Society.
Andrew Payne, Chairman of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society said “The audience reaction to this production has been so gratifying and makes all the hard work done by so many not just on stage but off, so worthwhile. The full houses and standing ovations were just the icing on the cake!
And our generous
Liz Robertson was kind enough to e-mail the following to the Society after her visit: On Saturday 1 June I was treated to a performance of The Sound Of Music by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier. From the moment the curtain went up any idea that I was watching an amateur production never entered my mind.
Under the direction of Peter Howell the performances were all of a very high calibre, with special mention to Helen Hayes who played Maria with huge charm. The children were excellent. These can be difficult parts to cast, but in this production they were so natural not at all 'stagey' and with great singing voices. Little Gretl was utterly adorable and stole our hearts when she sang So Long Farewell. Many a professional rendition of this show would have been thrilled to have achieved the polished performance I saw last Saturday.

Charity Golf Day for PSP
Four local ladies – Sam Hele, Fiona Spencer, Ali Cook and Sally Ling - recently set out on a mission to raise money for Progressive Supernuclear Palsy, and at the same time raise awareness of the illness.
The resulting charity golf day was held at Mundesley Golf Club on Friday 14 June and far exceeded their greatest expectations. The total raised has not yet been finalized but it is in excess of £4500.
Joint organiser Sam Hele continues ‘The Golf Day was a huge success. The sun was shining, the atmosphere was great and all the golf teams had great fun. Some played better golf than others but all those playing thought the course at Mundesley was in fantastic condition. The money raised will be used by the PSP Association to help research the disease and to help support families and carers of those suffering with the disease’.

Whilst researching the history of the telescope, one of our Trustees, Tim Groves, came across a historic photograph dating back to around 1860 actually showing the telescope with its first Coxswain owner – Robert Long. This makes the object priceless to the museum as it is a living piece of the town’s social history. We are incredibly grateful to the Australian branch of the Cooper family for their kind donation. ”
The original “nautical refractor” telescope used aboard the ‘Augusta’ fishermen’s lifeboat in the mid-1800s and the ‘Henry Ramey Upcher’ lifeboat up to 1930 has been kindly donated to the museum by Mr Tom Cooper, formerly of Sheringham, who retired to New South Wales in Australia in the 1990s taking his family heirloom with him. A musical evening featuring local folk and jazz musicians celebrating the return of the telescope will happen at the start of the 2013 summer season on Saturday 29 June from 7pm. Guests will be seated amongst the historic fleet of fishing boats and lifeboats on the ground floor of the museum for a unique experience (booking advised).

LIVE STEAM – LIVING HISTORY
Sheringham Independent 370 June 29th 2013
Top of the Class
The summer repertory season at Sheringham Little Theatre opens on Saturday, 6 July with a journey back to school. John Godber’s comedy runs until Monday, July 15 and then returns between Saturday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 6.
Set in a high school, the play takes a wry look at the education system.
“I started out with the theatre when I was still at school, taking part in the drama groups, and then as a workshop leader,” says Ryan, who comes from North Walsham but is in his final year at the renowned Rose Bruford drama college, in London. “This is my first professional role and it is very exciting to be taking it on in Sheringham.” Director of the Little Theatre, Debbie Thompson, adds: “Ryan took part in our first major production, Bugsy Malone, when he was younger so it now feels as if he has come full circle. With his involvement and Warren’s, there will be a very Norfolk feel to Teechers.”
It tells the story of three students and their various trials and tribulations – both in class and in life, explains Norwichbased director Warren Cathrine.
“I have directed Teechers before and am looking forward to doing it again,” he says. “I think it’s a great play because, despite being written in the 1980s, it is still very relevant today. It also tackles a subject that I am passionate about – education.
“I like the sophistication of the play. John Godber tells such good stories and even though the play is humorous, there is still a strong message behind it.”
One of the challenges of the production will be having just three cast members playing
Warren, who brought Blackout to Sheringham in April, is looking forward to working more closely with the venue.

£12000 GIVEN TO CHARITY
At the meeting of Rotary Club of North Norfolk on 3 June a cheque for £1,000 was presented by the president Denise Lattaway to Julie Alford representing the Holt Youth Project.
The Rotary Club of North Norfolk has again adopted the Holt Youth Project as its chosen charity for this year.
“I love the theatre – it is so efficient and professional while also being relaxed,” he says. “I can’t wait to see Teechers staged there as part of the summer rep and feel very honoured that it will be opening the whole season.”

Ladies who Lunch
During the year the club has organised various events including a golf day at the Royal Cromer golf course, a diner dance held at Pinewoods in Bodham and a bucket collection at Morrisons in Cromer and has raised a total of over £12,000 which has been passed to the Holt Youth Project to assist with the excellent work carried out by them in the area. The Holt Youth Project was featured in a program aired by the BBC on 22 May this year. Whilst thanking the Club for its support Julie reported that the Youth Project has just received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services, Julie said “this is the equivalent of receiving an MBE.”

Calling all plumbers, heating engineers and electrical installers!
During tough economic times, do you need another pair of hands to help with your workload but cannot afford to invest in qualified staff?
The answer could be to recruit an apprentice. Modern apprenticeships have changed significantly, and are now an excellent way to grow your business and take on those additional jobs while keeping costs to a minimum.
JTL is a registered charity and one of the leading training providers to the Building Services Engineering Sector. JTL works with 3,500 businesses and supports 9,700

Angela Carpenter, Employer Engagement Officer for Norfolk, is keen to make plumbers, heating engineers and electrical installers aware of a very special offer to businesses.

SEASIDE SPECIAL SPECTACULAR
The summer season of Seaside Special opened on Saturday 15th June, with a dazzling spectacular performance of variety entertainment.
The first of two shows, show 1, is called Variety Dotcom. All concerned can be very proud of this entertaining show.
Di Cooke, who devised, directed and choreographed the show has created a highly professional and entertaining show along with Nigel Hogg who is the musical director.
Dain Cordean, Danny Posthill and Jo Little linked the whole show with skill, comedy, fantastic impressions and magical moments.
The male lead singer David Jon O'Neill, The boy from "Oz" is tremendous and gave not only fine solo efforts but also featured well in the brilliant whole company scenes.
Jo Little kept us laughing with her own brand of Yorkshire humour as well as delighting us with her fantastic singing.
Last but by no means least the fantastic Seaside Special dancers gave an enthusiastic and high
octane performance supported by the delightful and talented children from Marlene's School of Dancing. They always give us the local "wow"factor, and this performance was no exception.
The scenery, Ian Westbrook, costumes, Laura Whyte, and lighting, Amanda Hill, are excellent and add to the complete enjoyment of this superb show.
This is a great show of which the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier can be truly proud.
We are now looking forward to show 2, Strictly Seaside.
Celebrating 36 years as one of England’s bestloved summer variety shows Seaside Special is a rich blend of comedy, music, song and dance featuring colourful costumes and stunning stage sets.
Cromer’s iconic Pier and Pavilion Theatre delivers that extra magic to a show that has an ever- increasing fan base bringing together people of all ages who have one thing in common, the love of variety.
In today’s TV and gadget world it is a rare treat to sit and watch a live performance where the cast interact with the audience and bring an extra sparkle to the Show.

Where hair care is still an art
This year’s Seaside Special features a diverse blend of music from today’s charts, top West End ballads and the classics. Add to this a mix of comedy, illusions, impressions and dance routines and you have the show. In fact you have two shows – ‘Variety Dotcom’ and ‘Strictly Seaside’ promising something for everyone.
Over the years Seaside Special has helped forge the careers of many of today’s performers and even today is giving new talent a chance to perform in front of an audience and enjoy that feeling that can only be found in live theatre.
Steve Cutbush Managing Director of Openwide Coastal said “I am very excited about this year’s Seaside Special. I believe we have created two very different shows that will bring out the best in all our artists and be a colourful and memorable experience for our audiences of all ages. This year we have introduced a Family Fun Saturday Matinee by adding a little bit more for the younger members of our audience. We understand the need to encourage families and young people to come and see the show and have created some great value family packages to help facilitate this. It is important for the future of live variety that we inspire the younger generation as they are as much a part of the future of live variety as the Pavilion Theatre is as the venue to one of the top variety shows in the country - Seaside Special”.
Seaside Special runs until 28 September Tuesday – Saturday at 7.30pm with Matinee performances starting on Tuesday 2nd July at 2.30pm

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival
The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th July.
The festivals have been run for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk. Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of nearly £14,000 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham RNLI. This charity received the most votes from visitors to the festival who were invited to select from several choices of charities.
Every year the floral arrangements of the festival are designed to a specific theme.
Last year’s theme was “reaching out” with floral arrangements depicting many ways that this is done – from the light of a lighthouse reaching out to guide and direct to the many ways that God’s love reaches out to everyone. Our photos from last year’s festival give a flavour of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject.
This year’s Festival theme, “We have a lot to be thankful for” will be depicted by more than 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.

Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members.
All letters must be supplied with name and full address (full address will not be published). Anonymous letters will not be published. Comments, views and opinions in readers letters are not necessarily shared by the editors or the publisher and we reserve the right to edit or not publish.
Dear Margaret,
With reference to Colin Millen’s Campaign for Self-Government (Sheringham Independent 25.5.13), many old people who no longer have a car due to their age and the fact they can't afford the prices of the small shops, need a supermarket - FACT.
Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts and crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, Stained Glass Art,
Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle and various quizzes.
Catering forms a major part of the Festival and many past visitors have complimented us on the quality of light lunches, cream teas and the extensive choice of cakes that are on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival can be considered a great day out.
Opening times of the festival are Thursday, Friday & Saturday 10am to 6pm, and Sunday 12 noon to 6 pm. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities.
Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information on St Andrews Church in general can be found on our web site www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk
We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

Statements of Tesco for 2012 are nothing to do with it whatsoever and if, as you say, they will charge more for the goods they sell then they will lose out, and, if you are right, then they will have to sell the store and there would be loads of other stores willing to take it on. End of problem.
Multi-purpose compost 50 litre bags £3.99 each or 3 for £10
Tesco was given the right to build the store by the NNDC after many years it was given the go ahead by democratically voted for by a small minority of Sheringham residents.
Debt-fuelled growth as you called it, is already taking effect of this country and many others and is already affecting economic growth all over the world, or have you not noticed this?
Where were the people that never bothered to look at the plans for this store and why did they do nothing to make sure the plans were right for Sheringham? How many wrote into the council and said we will need a roundabout at the junction of the Drift and Cromer Road as traffic will have to turn across the flow of traffic towards Cromer to get back to Weybourne, Bodham and westerly directions, or will be turning left up the drift or up Common Lane which will be mayhem.
It is no good moaning now it has all been planned and passed in the name of progress. You all had your chances and let them go by. But at least the old people will get their own supermarket even if the road is congested due to bad planning agreed by the NNDC. Keith Colman Sheringham

Ladies of the Band
Behind every group of successful men, it might be said, there is a group of successful women. This is certainly the case with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass band. Whilst the men outnumber the ladies by about six to one, the contribution made by the fairer sex in this ensemble certainly equals that of their male colleagues.
Jenny Thomas, a recent player with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band, plays tenor horn. However, if you are one of those people who go to the concerts of other bands in North Norfolk, you would most probably have seen her playing French horn or perhaps trumpet. To say she is a performing enthusiast is to greatly understate the fact.
Julie Snaith sits in the largest section of the band and plays cornet. That she is surrounded by men is definitely not a problem to her! She has no trouble holding her own with the best of them.

In charge of the Band is Jane Bussey, who in her role as Director of Music, keeps the musicians under control with her baton. Thursday evenings are practice nights, when the band members are put through their paces in preparation for upcoming events. Occasionally Jane will replace her baton with a brass instrument, or accompany a soloist on the piano.
Heather Shepherd along with the two men in her section, occupies the kitchen department – percussion section to non musicians. So, she needs to know how to play a variety of drums and cymbals, as well as instruments like the xylophone.
But why not come along to see and hear them in action? As part of the Patronal weekend of St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be presenting a concert, featuring the Church Choir, on Saturday 29 June. It starts at 7.30pm and admission is free, although a voluntary donation at the end of the evening would be greatly appreciated. We look forward to seeing you.

Spring Notes from the Commons
This year’s spring must go down as one of the coldest and longest spells of non-spring weather in living memory, certainly in my recording of the wildlife of the Commons since the 1960s I do not remember such a slow start to the season. We have had snow and wintery showers frequently throughout March and continuing cold winds / rain/ fog in May, all of which has given the wildlife and plant life a few setbacks.
A number of winter finches were about as to be expected during the first week of March, which included Brambling, Siskin and Redpoll. It was at this time the weather improved for a few days and the warm sunshine around 5 March brought out a few Common Frogs, although wintery conditions soon returned. It was also at this time I was away due to work, however, Mark Clements kept an eye out and reported increased numbers of finches, 25 Bramblings and 30 Siskins on 6 March with 15 Redwings, two Fieldfares and a Fox (12 March). Mark also reported the first frog’s spawn for the year the following day (13 March). This was followed by sightings of two Common Buzzards (15 March), a Barn Owl (19 March) and a Water Rail (22 March).
On 30 March members of the Norfolk Fungus Study Group paid a visit to the Commons and apart from finding some fungus species new to the Commons they spotted six Adders and two Common Lizards on the snow flecked heath. In addition they enjoyed close views of a female Sparrowhawk feeding on a Woodcock. Many wild flowers were late in flowering but by the end of March the delicate pale blue of the Lesser Periwinkle’s blooms were showing above a mass of dark glossy leaves.
Back from my offshore work I spotted a Buff-tailed Bumble Bee queen and a Common Buzzard (3 April), which was followed by the quiet song of a Firecrest (4 April) from a tall ivy-covered tree making it almost impossible to locate. With increasing amounts of sunshine and a rise in temperature, (7 April) a Chiffchaff was heard calling loudly from some scrub. Generally these birds are back claiming territory in mid-March. The improved weather also brought out Comma and Small Tortoiseshell butterflies. Mark also spotted seven Common Buzzards circling on thermals above the Commons that day. The Norfolk Birding Forum website carried a post that two Mediterranean Gulls were seen overflying the Common. This was at a time when many such birds were present in the county. By 13 April at least six Chiffchaffs were singing around the Commons and as the good weather continued
many Common Toads could be seen making their way from the scrubby areas towards the breeding ponds. A Tree Bumble Bee and a Common Lizard were also noted. The first Swallows of the year passed westwards over the Commons (15 April) and Willow Warblers with their distinctive down-scale song had joined the ever increasing bird chorus. A female Marsh Harrier was noted by Mark hunting over Pill-box hill and the following day (16 April) he spotted a lone Red Kite passing over westwards. Green Tiger Beetles and Dark-edged Bee-flies were also out and about at this time along with Blackcaps. The myxomycete, Reticularia lycoperdon, which forms a hemispherical white mass on the side of dead wood, was present from 17 April. After a frosty start (20 April) the sun came out and an early Speckled Wood was noted but the highlight of the day was when seven Common Cranes were spotted flying west. Subsequently the cranes were tracked by birders to end of the county as they crossed the Wash towards Lincolnshire. Although it was past mid-April flowers were still few in number but Wood Anemone (18 April), Moschatel and Wood Sorrel (21 April) were beginning to appear. Common Whitethroat (21 April) recorded by Mark was a species that was on time as it generally arrives on the Commons between 19 and 24 April. A small day-flying micro-moth, the Early Long-horn, which has only been found in 14 out of 69 10km squares in Norfolk was present in small numbers (max.25) at the top of Sallow bushes (23 April). During a walk with a U3A group from Briston (24 April) a Black-banded Spider-hunting Wasp was seen as was the mining bee, Andrena clerkella. Bluebells, again late in flowering were beginning to come out and the song of a Lesser Whitethroat came from deep cover (28 April).
Commons also.
A Slow-worm and a Red Admiral were reported by Mark (7 May), which as far as butterflies go only left the Green-veined white to make an appearance to ‘tick’ all of the ‘Spring’ butterflies. A small ‘micro’, another day-flying moth was noted 11 May on Marsh Marigold. These were Microptrix calthella, a primitive moth that has retained functional mouthparts, which enable it to feed on pollen. Mark finally turned up the Green-veined White (14 May) and the last warbler species that is a regular to the Commons, the Garden Warbler (22 May), two days after I left for another offshore stint. Mark continued to record and it really showed what a little sun could do over the early days of the bank holiday before the mist descended! The first real dragonfly of the year was seen over the main pond, a female Broad-bodied Chaser and also an Azure Damselfly. The following day (28 May) Mark saw a Common Buzzard flying south and an Oystercatcher went east over the Common. A number of insects were out including a Green Hairstreak Butterfly, a
Soldier Beetle Cantharis rustica and a Click Beetle, Athous haemorrhoidalis. A slow-worm and a Roe Deer were seen. As May ended cool north-easterlies were still holding the countryside back and this was particularly noticeable in the lack of butterflies and wildflowers. We await better conditions over the summer months. Francis Farrow, Hon. Warden www.beestoncommon.org.uk
A Cuckoo calling on 1 May was a fine start to the month but unfortunately it hasn’t been heard since (at least to my knowledge). Also on this day Orange-tip butterfly and Large Red Damselfly were reported by Mark. The Barry & Rob’s following day Mark spotted Holly Blue, Green Hairstreak, Brimstone, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies during a warm sunny afternoon. The Green Long-horn, another Small & large clearances, fences, turf-laying, day-flying moth was small trees, hedges and much more present (6 May) but in considerably less Call Barry on 07717 575633 or 01263 834830 numbers than previous Email br.gardeningservices@gmail.com years and Swifts www.brgardeningservices.co.uk appeared over the

Dark Thoughts and Dubious Motives Murder is afoot at Sheringham Little Theatre when the summer repertory season continues with Deathtrap.
Ira Levin’s dark thriller opens on Wednesday 17 July and runs until Thursday 25 July, before returning from Monday 19 August and Saturday 24 August.
The gripping tale focuses on former writer Sidney Bruhl and his thoughts of murder when presented with a script by an unknown playwright. There follows an intricately woven plot, which transports the audience through a rollercoaster ride of thrills, twists and frights, says director Helen Leblique.
“Deathtrap contains, as Charles Spencer put it - reviewing a London production a couple of years ago - ‘more twists than a bucket of snakes,’ at the same time as it wittily deconstructs the conventions of the thriller genre. Audiences can look forward to
a howling storm, an unreliable power supply, a Dutch psychic with a sense of impending disaster, and some violent set-pieces.”
Helen says the play, which stars Rupert Mason Loraine Metcalf, Joshua Jefferies, Cornelius Garrett and Rebecca Todd, looks set to be great fun.
“The challenge for me as the director is to maintain the balance of comedy and thriller, so that there are both laughs and screams,” she admits. “I am delighted to be returning to Sheringham Little Theatre after the success of The Norman Conquests last year, to tackle my first thriller!
“I am also really looking forward to working with several of the actors I directed last year,as well as some new ones. One of the newcomers to Sheringham is Joshua Jefferies, who I directed at East 15 acting school a couple of years ago. Josh studied acting

and stage combat, and I anticipate putting his skills in stage violence to good use in Deathtrap.”
Josh said he was also excited to being involved in the thriller: “Not only am I performing in two very different thrilling plays and working with two amazing directors, but I also help choreograph and perform some stage combat. This, along with the rest of the action, will leave the audience stuck to their seats wanting more!"
