Local Author and Artist Featured in A Gospel of Wild Flowers display

The Rt Revd Tony Foottit, retired Bishop of Lynn (now living in Reepham) and Pat Albeck, a well-known National Trust artist (who lives in Aldborough) are the author and illustrator of a unique book being featured in this year’s Summer Display at Aylsham Methodist Church.

Both author and artist kindly gave permission for numerous enlarged excerpts from “The Gospel of Wild Flowers” to be exhibited on 10 large display boards at the recently refurbished chapel in White Hart Street. Pat Albeck, who studied at the Royal College of Art, is well-known for her designs of wallpapers, textiles, ceramics, calendars and, as patrons of NT shops happily know, numerable tea towels. She has also written childrens books and “A Cat’s Guide to England”.

Following ordination, Tony Foottit served in team ministry in Norfolk, later becoming Archdeacon and Suffragen Bishop of Lynn. Brought up in a country vicarage, he has a life-long interest in plants, especially wild flowers. In the book he seeks to show something of their spiritual significance.

Extracts from the book will be on display 9am-5pm from 7 -30 August. Admission is free and visitors, holidaymakers and residents are most welcome.

David Hodson takes over the kitchens at the Grove

Local lad David Hodson takes the reins with a brief to grow the Grove’s reputation off the back of a prestigious AA Dinner Award achieved earlier in the year.

Born in France, David was raised and educated in Norfolk. He worked under Gordon Ramsay at the Aubergine in London, has launched restaurants in Selfridges and Harvey Nicks, and has decades of experience working in Rosette and Michelin starred restaurants all over the world, as well as cooking for private households including two overseas royal families and HRH the Prince of Wales.

Now David is looking to return to his roots and produce high-quality, locally-sourced food in the beautiful suroundings of the Grove, tucked away on Overstrand Road.

“Norfolk has been calling me for years, but I was just waiting for the right opportunity to come back home”, David said. “The Grove is an incredible place, owned by the same family for nearly eighty years and full of history and charm, and I fell in love with it as soon as I walked through the door. The potential here is considerable. We are lucky enough to have the best coastline amazing shellfish; Cromer crab and lobster as well as fresh line-caught fish, and a wonderful farming heritage seeing a real revival with pork, beef and poultry some of the best in the country. We use as much fresh produce grown in the Grove gardens by John and Ann Graveling - as possible, so we have a winning combination.

“We have lots of diverse activities planned – we’re already working with About with Friends, a super local charity, who provide our afternoon teas – and I’m very excited about what we can do here. It’s great to find a house and family keen to take things forward, and as we develop and grow the aim is to become one of the top five restaurants in Norfolk.”

Owner Richard Graveling was delighted to secure David. “Our previous head chef, Gary Parrett, did a wonderful job getting us off the ground and transforming the place from a B&B to a fully-functioning restaurant, and we’re now looking to David to build on those foundations and really give the Grove a healthy dash of experience and quality,” he said. “We’re aware that customers nowadays are incredibly particular about where they go out and we are keen to try to live up the reputation of North Norfolk in general as a terrific place to eat.”

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition featuring a collection of works by local artist Claire Davies, of Sloley, near North Walsham.

Speaking of her art, Claire says “My paintings are influenced greatly by Abstract Expressionism and are in oil pastel and Indian ink. My nature inspired designs are following a decorative path, lending themselves to wallpaper motifs and collage work, currently with the theme of birds.”

With a B.A Hons in Fine Art Painting and Printed Textiles, and after a 15 year break and varied mix of life experiences, it was motherhood which brought Claire back to painting and provided a catalyst for the passion and intensity which invests and drives her work. Claire’s paintings are vibrant with colour from a minimal palette, scored by Indian ink, a medium which constantly inspires her and which can offer the observer new depth, insight and discoveries over time.

For more information on Claire Davies visit: http://clairedaviesartist.co.uk

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm and Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS

Tuesday 27 August

at CROMER HIGH SCHOOL, NORWICH ROAD, CROMER 1pm – 3.15pm and 4.30pm – 7pm

DONATE BLOOD BEFORE YOU GO

In the summer months, as many of us head off abroad in search of sun, sea and sangria, NHS Blood and Transplant would like to remind readers about the importance of taking time to donate blood before you go away.

Hospitals in England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day to treat patients with a range of health issues, so the need for blood is constant. So please donate now, before you pack your suitcase and jet off to sunnier climes. This is especially important for those donors who are O Rh negative (O-) and B Rh negative (B-), as these blood groups are most vulnerable.

Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations, but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia. Blood stocks can dip in the summer and with red blood cells only having a shelf life of 35 days and platelets a shelf life of seven days, it is important that NHS Blood and Transplant maintains vital blood stocks by collecting enough blood to meet patient needs.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHSBT, said: “Summer is the time of year that everyone looks forward to. The longer days, warmer weather and the plethora of outdoor events put everyone in a good mood. But with some people jetting off to exotic countries, we like to encourage eligible donors to donate before their holiday, rather than afterwards, to ensure that the blood stocks are kept healthy.”

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

NEW FREE GREEN GUIDE TO THE BROADS: Where Adventures Begin‌ this week. Celebrating the best of the Broads, the free publication results from a partnership between the sustainable tourism agency, Greentraveller, the Broads Authority and Cool Places MD, Martin Dunford, who was one of the founders of the Rough Guides and who has been visiting the region nearly all his life.

A 44-page publication that inspires readers to discover the many sustainable adventures available in the Broads National Park launches

Pretty Corner Summer Festival

The Woodland Trust and North Norfolk District Council are inviting people from across the region to the second Pretty Corner Summer Festival on Thursday 22 August between 10:30am and 4pm. Last year’s event attracted over 600 visitors and this year’s is expected to be bigger and better.

Entitled The Broads: Where Adventures Begin‌ A Guide for Green Travellers, the full colour booklet written by Martin Dunford features over 100 recommendations for what to see and do in this atmospheric wilderness of rivers and lakes. It covers everything in this jewel of Britain’s family of National Parks, from great pubs, fabulous places to stay, historic towns and the beautiful Norfolk coastline to the best boat hire outfits along the miles of magical waterways.

A wetland of international importance, more

than 60 Broads (or small lakes) are linked together by approximately 200kms of safe, lock-free waterways. They are home to the UK’s highest concentration of rare and endangered species of plants, animals, insects and birds. Over 7 Million people visit the area each year to enjoy the wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities that it offers, but it is also a very fragile environment needing constant care and attention.

The new guides are available as part of the Love the Broads initiative. Copies will be freely available (beside a donation box) at dozens of outlets and attractions in the region, while those wishing to apply for a copy of The Broads: Where Adventures Begin‌ A Guide for Green Travellers in the post can apply for a copy by calling 01603 610734, or visiting www.broads-authority.gov.uk

Pretty Corner

Summer Festival 22nd August 2013 10.30am-4pm

Attractions on the day include woodland crafts, sculpture building, donkey rides, pond dipping and many more. Most importantly the Summer Festival is free for anyone to attend.

Woodland Trust Site Manager Michael Ryder, said: “We had a great turnout last year and we’re looking forward to welcoming more people this summer. It’s a great chance to see how we’re working with the council to make the woods an even more interesting place to visit and take part in some fun activities on the day too.

The 75 acre woodland, jointly looked after by both organisations, is one of the most visited woodland sites in the region, with great walks and views out to sea. Pretty Corner has also recently been awarded Green Flag status.

The event is open to all, but children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are welcome, but should be kept on a lead. Parking will be signposted on the day but is limited; people are encouraged to use public transport or car share where possible. Prestigious Green Flag hoisted again at Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood, and now also at Pretty Corner

Holt Country Park and Sadler’s Wood have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2013/14 and now they have been joined by the most aptly named Pretty Corner.

It is the ninth year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.

In 2005, the country park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.

Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag last year, and this year they have been joined by another area of excellent open space in North Norfolk, Pretty

Corner Woods near Sheringham.

Pretty Corner has been awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is unusual and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers.

The three sites are among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award at the end of last month.

John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces. But Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are up there with the best of our countryside. Our staff take great care in looking after them, while many groups make use of them and also take part in their conservation and management. Congratulations to everyone whose dedication has paid off, with the recognition that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods are three of the best free open spaces in the country.”

Fundraising Success!

The Open Door Art team would like to say a big thank you to all those who attended our Caribbean themed fundraising night which raised an amazing £800 for the group. The Cricket Pavilion came alive for the night with the sound of reggae music and the soft glow of lanterns. The amazing backdrop and scenery created by our fundraising team Erica and Jeannie helped revellers imagine they were in hotter climes, and the food certainly spiced up the evening.

Thanks to all local traders who donated very generous raffle prizes and added to the glamour of the evening. A big thank you also goes to the gentleman who auctioned himself off for a day – a very brave effort and a massive thank you needs to go to Martin from Ellie's Cafe who kindly donated all the ice-creams for the evening.

The evening could not have been possible without Jeannie and Erica’s hard work promoting the night, collecting raffle prizes, decorating the venue, cooking food, and generally entertaining everyone – thank you ladies!

Paul Watson, On behalf of the Open Door team.

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

“Quality green spaces are absolutely essential to happy, healthy communities. They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages. That is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Kittens, and even more kittens, have needed to come into care and all our pens are now full. Another 10 plus two mums arrived this week because their owner was unable to care for them properly. Fortunately six kittens have left for loving new homes and a further four will leave when they are old enough and had their first injections. Those still needing our help are receiving excellent care whilst they wait for a pen to become free. Stephanie has also received calls from outside our area where people have been unable to get help from their local charities because they too are full. We do, however, give priority to those needing help locally.

As well as calls relating to cats needing to come into care, there have been several enquiries recently from people needing to catch stray/feral cats for neutering, etc. Mention of the loan of a cat trap sometimes puts people off and I must admit that before I had actually seen one, my reaction was the same. They are a safe way of catching cats without fear of injuring the cats or the person catching them. Food is put at the far end of the trap and when the cat steps on the mechanism the door closes at the other end. Another way to catch a nervous/stray cat (providing you can get close to it) is with a “crusher cage”. Again, it sounds horrendous but actually is the opposite. A crusher cage looks similar to an ordinary wire carrying basket with an additional opening, plus a restrainer inside,

which allows the vet to examine the cat without fear of injury to him or the cat. I have used one with the additional opening on the bottom and it is a much less stressful way to catch cats in certain circumstances; just drop it over the cat, quickly replace the floor and the cat is secure. Those with additional side openings are very handy for transferring a cat from a trap ready to be examined as they are designed to fit together for this purpose.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club

Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we’re all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke which can be fatal.

Here’s our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars.

• Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.

• Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer - Most breeds

Sullivan

Where hair care is still an art

seem to really appreciate this.

• Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors.

• If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns.

• Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts.

• Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations.

But most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Colour In Motion

In August, The Gallery Norfolk celebrates its first year – and affirms its reputation for vibrancy and colour – with an exhibition of paintings by the Norwich based painter Leon Bunnewell.

Exuding atmosphere and energy, Bunnewell’s landcapes, seascapes and townscapes have attracted a great deal of attention from visitors to The Gallery Norfolk since it opened in Summer 2012.

“People love the passion they feel in Leon’s pictures,” says the gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, “They evoke strong emotions. His paintings of Cromer and the beaches here have understandably proved very popular here, but earlier this year he showed me more of his work depicting other towns, like East and West Runton and Sheringham – and as for his landscapes ... they really blew me away! He is a master at capturing a sense of movement – whether it be in the waves of the sea or in a scene on a beach or in a street... But he also manages to instil an apparently serene landscape with his trademark intensity and dynamism. The effect can be quite mesmerising, and that motivated me to create an exhibition that does justice to the full range of his work.”

Leon Bunnewell works primarily with oils, although he is also experienced with acrylics, watercolours and pastels and has produced many pencil drawings. Largely self-taught – as he says “painting for love” – he nearly always

works outdoors, “on the spot, throughout the year and in all weathers. I paint quite quickly, in a single session, working loosely and often vigorously and aiming for spontaneity and freshness. My wish is to create a painting with character, personality and feeling; evoking how the subject behaves and feels – and the sensations it creates in me – rather than just capturing how it looks.”

"Compare your signature with your best hand-writing, all your character is in the signature and that's what I put into my paintings."

a specialist framing service: “The emphasis is on helping customers to find a creative framing solution that really works well in their home – as well as being crafted to very high standards for a realistic price.”

Over the past year, demand for The Gallery Norfolk’s paintings, drawings and prints has grown, with pieces by new local names now complementing the work of artists who helped set the gallery’s creative direction from day one. They include Sarah McMenemy and Andy Lovell: “Sarah’s six new prints of Cromer – available as a limited-edition set – are proving especially desirable, as are Andy’s three new silk-screen prints,” explains Polly Miller. Visitors to The Gallery Norfolk are both impressed and surprised by the range of art on offer from both established and rising names. Prices start as low as £30 for original works of art, but there are also pieces to tempt the more serious collector. The gallery also offers

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club has made donations to 12 charitable causes during the year to 30 June 2013 totalling £1680.50.

Most benefactors were local, the largest donation being to the President’s chosen charity, Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind who received £600.

The Club was able to make these donations through its fundraising activities which included street and store collections in the area, car boot sales, a stall at Wells Summer Fayre, Quiz and Chips evenings, darts throw competitions and an Easter egg hunt. Our sincere thanks to those who have supported our efforts, for without this support, none of this would be possible.

Also offering an array of craftwork and jewellery, the gallery has become a popular source for gifts. In everything it does, The Gallery Norfolk sets store by colour, originality and strong design.

“We’ve built close relationships with individual craftspeople, such as jewellers, ceramicists and glass-makers, but we also now stock a hand-picked collection of vintage glass by makers such as Murano and Dartington. It’s an eclectic mix, but it all gives the gallery its special personality.

”Pop in to view the exhibition on Church Street at the east end of Cromer, or call Polly on 01263 515745 or visit www.thegallerynorfolk.co.uk

S U MMER EX H IB ITIO N Paintings by the Norfolk artist Leon Bunnewell 10th – 31st August 2013 Leon Bunnewell paints outside, on the spot – throughout the year and in all weathers. His style is fresh, loose, colourful and vigorous, alive with spontaneity. Leon does not just paint what he sees: he brings a scene to vivid life, evoking sensation and emotion

It is somewhat gratifying to have achieved this success as it was the Club’s first year in existence. This was at a time when the building of the Club was taking place and, whilst some would have heard of the Lions organisation, no-one would have heard of this particular Club. We have, until now, been a branch of the Taverham & District Lions Club as, until we have 20 members, we cannot be a stand-alone Club.

We are pleased to report that it is likely that we shall soon be a Club in our own right but we are still looking for new members who may be interested in helping our community as well as making new friends and taking part in a variety of social activities which, as a Club, we enjoy.

Please contact Hazel on 01263 821276 who will be pleased to provide you with more information and answer any queries you may have. Sheringham Independent 373 August 10th 2013

Attractions for all at Bodham Big Weekend

Once again Bodham Big Weekend was a tremendous success. It incorporated traditional village events such as a quiz and horticultural show with a family fun day and a rock concert which attracted contributors and an audience from around the county. Not surprisingly the organisers of the event expressed themselves “well pleased” with the success of Bodham Big Weekend.

there was little barking and no problems. The puppy that stole the hearts of most spectators though was a young Lhasa Apso called Dudley.

Sunday Funday had an unusual beginning this year. BBC Radio Norfolk’s popular programme Treasure Quest included Bodham Big Weekend. In fact the treasure was hidden on the coconut shy run by Derek Sayer and Terry Linford. At a few minutes to twelve Julie Reinger and the Radio Norfolk car turned on to the field and with a little help from spectators, Julie located and opened the treasure. She also kindly opened the Funday proceedings on the field before leaving. Despite the cloudy and misty weather visitors and local families arrived at the field.

The children did well, but there again there were dozens of them and J.P had his work cut out to contain their enthusiasm. A ladies team put up a good time pulling the tractor over the required distance. However a new course record of 1.31.8 seconds was achieved by a team calling themselves the Silver Foxes. When Can I Access My Neighbour’s Land? By Stephanie Connor, Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

Sometimes it may be necessary for you to go on to your neighbour’s land in order to repair your house, or to remove a tree which has become dangerous and unstable and needs chopping down.

The most straightforward way to do this is to simply ask your neighbour for their permission to gain access to their land. You may need to arrange for the works to be done at a time to suit your neighbour. It is always advisable to try to remain on good terms with your neighbour if possible.

If however, your neighbour refuses you access to their land then there are steps you

can take. The Access to Neighbouring Land Act 1992 gives the right for you to access neighbouring land for the purpose of ‘carrying out basic preservation works’ to your property. These works include the maintenance and repair of a building, repair of drains, sewers or cables, filling in or clearing a ditch or tree felling if the tree is dead, diseased or dangerous. The Act’s reference to ‘preservation’ means that it is unlikely to be of use if you wish to build something new, such as an extension.

To utilise the Act you need to be granted a right of access by applying to the County Court. A Court fee will be payable.

The Court will decide whether the works are reasonably necessary and whether they would be very difficult to carry out without access to neighbouring land. The Court Order will state exactly what work is to be carried out, when and where it will take place and might also provide for you to pay compensation to your neighbour for any loss or damage.

The Court could decide to refuse access if it believes it would cause hardship to your neighbour or significantly interfere with their enjoyment of their own land.

Once a Court Order has been obtained, you will then be able to access your neighbour’s land but you must only do the works specifically authorised under the Order.

Is your family ready for the National Trust’s North Norfolk coast 50 things adventure? The National Trust is challenging families to have a go at a series of exciting and fun activities along the north Norfolk coast during this year’s summer holidays.

The Trust’s Norfolk Coast team has put together a list of the top five things to do at each of the special places it cares for along the coast, from Brancaster Beach and Brancaster Staithe in the west to Friary Hills and Blakeney Point in the east.

Activities include Fly a Kite at Brancaster Beach, Make a Mud Pie at Stiffkey Marshes, Track Wild Animals at Morston Quay and Hunt for Fossils and Bones at Blakeney Point. Alex Green, a National Trust learning officer at the Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre (BMAC), which specialises in outdoor activities for kids, said:

“We care for some of the most special places on the north Norfolk coastline and they are very popular with families, both those living here and those enjoying a holiday. To help kick-start some family adventures we have created a fun and informative little guide to

enable them to get more out of their time together on the coast and visit other places they maybe didn’t know about.”

The activities are drawn from the Trust’s hugely popular 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. And it’s good news for anyone on a budget - Many of the activities are free or low cost.

“Our guide is full of activity ideas as well as hints and tips of what to wear or what to look out for, plus it has a handy map showing all the locations along the way,” added Miss Green. “So whether whatever you want to do, the guide will help you make the most out of your trip to the seaside.”

Those wanting an even greater challenge can also try things like kayaking, raft building or a muddy harbour ramble exploring Brancaster’s creeks and wildlife. There will be a charge of between £5 and £10 for these additional activities.

Dark circles under eyes? Non-surgical solutions can help

Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic explains…

Dark circles under eyes are a common problem. These can result in a tired and dull appearance even though you may be full of energy. So what causes these?

and even underlying bone of this area change and shadows start to appear. Sometimes this can be a result of surgery in this area.

So what can be done for tear trough correction?

Dark circle may actually be due to excess pigmentation in the skin under the eyes. This is more common among dark Asians. It can sometimes be due to underlying medical problems, nutritional deficiencies or due to congestion caused by allergies or hay fever etc.

Vast majority of suffers however do not have any underlying medical problem. The usual cause is not true dark circles but such appearance due to shadows cast by overhead light. The medical name for this is naso-jugal grove or more commonly referred to as ‘tear troughs’

Tear troughs is the area where lower eyelid stops and cheek begins. The skin along this area is attached to the underlying bone by a dense ligament. Young plump skin and underlying tissue hides it. This, however, changes as 30s and 40s roll on. Skin, soft tissue

This is one condition where surgery will not help. A better solution is an injection of hyaluronic acid fillers to plump out this area so that shadows become less conspicuous. And remember - less is more here. Too much filler and a bluish tinge will be visible or the area will swell. Bruising as a result of treatment is now very much a thing of the past. New technology and injection techniques now make it possible to have this as a ‘lunch-time’ procedure without any downtime although it is best to allow a few days to be on the safe side.

Is this procedure painful?

We use restylane or juvederm these are natural products and allergy test is not required. Another big advantage is that it can easily and instantly dissolved should there be any problem.

How long does the filler last?

Usually up to a year or more and then it can be repeated.

What other treatment options are available?

Specialist skin creams including depigmenting agents, gentle chemical peels and fractional eyelift also known as ‘Madonna lift’ can rejuvenate skin around the eyes and sometimes combination approach works best.

To book an appointment call 0800 0430737 or log on to our website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

No, this is performed under local anaesthetic and this area is usually less sensitive so pain is not an issue.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Twenty two members met at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on Thursday 18 July when our guest speaker, Val Crowe, assisted by her husband Mike, gave a fascinating slide-show and talk entitled “Dubai”. She had lived there in 1992-97 and again in 2007-09, and had seen it grow from a sandy skeleton town to the sophisticated modern city of today. She described the United Arab Emirates as a multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-racial country where one went to work and earn money: provided one respected the laws and culture of the land, one was made extremely welcome, but if one caused offence, expulsion could be immediate.

The prosperity of the Emirates is based primarily on the massive Dubai container port which uses satellite- read bar-code tracking systems, and handles the trans-shipment of bulk cargoes. From fishing and pearl diving, the UAE economy has progressed rapidly to international tourism, incredible shopping centres, golf and other major international sporting activities including horse, motor and power-boat racing and now soccer. Dubai is a city of the wealthy: as Val put it, “if money can buy it, they do!”

On a more personal note, with her professional musical background, Val set up the highly successful Dubai Wind Band, which was commissioned to play at all the major hotels and, on one occasion, at the British Embassy in the company of Julian Lloyd Webber. Geoffrey Goodman proposed a vote of thanks, warmly endorsed by our members.

Chairman John Dunsire announced that the Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club had invited us to a joint meeting at The Links Hotel on Tuesday 4 March, when David Clayton of BBC Radio Norfolk will speak on “The cars of my life”. Programme Secretary Ken Murray would be preparing details of two specific outings for members to consider and Secretary Geoffrey Goodman informed members of an invitation to visit the new North Walsham Museum of Magic.

The meeting closed with the presentation of a Probus tie and pin to Terry Penrose in appreciation of his long service to the Club. Our next meeting is at The Dales on 15 August, when Erica Murray of the Norfolk Broads Authority, will talk on conservation issues. For more details, please contact Kevin Klingo on 01263 824624.

HIGHWAYS ISSUES AROUND SHERINGHAM DISTRICT

Parking on our roads in and around the town has been brought to my attention on several occasions both when going around at election time and since.

Obstruction on roads (preventing the passage of vehicles) or footways (preventing the passage of wheelchairs or child’s pushchairs) is extremely annoying and unnecessary. On footways this forces pedestrians, particularly those with children, to walk in the road and be in danger from oncoming vehicles, and where there are no dropped curbs it makes it very difficult for wheelchair users.

Obstruction must be referred to the police on the 101 number to our Safer Neighbourhood team. On street parking enforcement, including yellow lines and time-limited spaces, is now not dealt with by our Police but carried out by Civil Enforcement Officers employed by local Authorities.

To report illegal parking in North Norfolk telephone 01553 617222 or e mail parking.operations@west-norfolk.gov.uk.

To those who indulge in anti social parking, please be more considerate.

Denise Burke elected as Labour’s General Election candidate for North Norfolk Between 2004 and 2010 she worked for the Mayor of London on

North Norfolk Labour Party has selected its party chair Denise Burke to run as the Labour Parliamentary Candidate in North Norfolk at the 2015 General Election.

Denise Burke from Happisburgh is no stranger to local politics having led a number of high profile campaigns including the Act on Ambulances and Protect Our Post campaigns. She told Labour Party members at a selection meeting in Cromer that she is “not just another man in a suit" and would offer "a real choice in 2015" with an alternative to "the three Tory parties".

childcare and youth strategy. Previously she worked as a tax inspector for ten years, and headed up early years and childcare for Peterborough city council.

She has pledged to fight for better care and health, more jobs, improved transport, affordable housing and coastal protection in north Norfolk all areas she believes Norman Lamb and the government have failed to adequately address.

Denise has been chair of North Norfolk Labour Party since 2012, and is a school governor and volunteer in the community. She works with her husband, Stephen, on a number of initiatives to improve care for both young and older people. She runs the Good Care Guide - a 'TripAdvisor' style website for families using childcare and eldercare - and United for All Ages bringing young and old people together.

Hedgerow pruning...

August is a great time of year to prune evergreen hedges like Leylandii, Privet and Yew and also some deciduous hedging; although formal hedging and more vigorous varieties can also benefit from a second or third pruning in early spring and summer. Winter and late-autumn pruning should be avoided for evergreens, due to frost damage. When hedging is pruned regularly and correctly it will have a dramatic effect, restricting outward growth to provide a denser and fuller hedge.

A hedge should always be thicker at the bottom than the top (the “A” shape above) to allow sunlight to reach the lower branches and thus be dense from top to bottom. This shape can very quickly be lost if regular pruning is not carried out, and re-shaping is not always easy or possible at a given time of year, depending upon the species. Most overgrown hedges can be reduced dramatically at this time of year and will grow stronger before winter.

Flowering hedging including Lavender, Berberis, Escallonia and Rosemary are best pruned immediately after flowering. It is always preferable to lightly trim the tops of Lavender each year, rather than cutting into old, woody stems. For other varieties of flowering hedging there can be more specific pruning regimes (i.e. after fruiting) and we highly recommend reading up before pruning.

By allowing just a little time each year you can have a hedge which stays dense, looks good and produces an abundance of flowers. Barry & Rob’s Gardening Services

POPPY LINE TO STAGE MASSIVE STEAM GALA AT END OF AUGUST

Two of the most famous steam locomotives in Britain are set to star in North Norfolk’s Poppy Line Gala, which runs from Friday August 30th to Sunday September 1st.

Tornado, the only steam loco built this century, is joined by Oliver Cromwell, the giant engine that commanded the Norwich – London expresses until diesels took over.

There’s also a remarkable survivor in the programme. No. 76084, one of the standard locomotives built for British Railways after the second world war, was rescued from the scrapyard 39 years ago and spent the next 30 years as a super-large ornament in a Retford garden. Set up to restore her, the 76084 Locomotive Company has now completed the task, and the engine will be running on the Poppy Line for the next two years.

Other engines lined up for the Gala include former Southern Railway King Arthur class Sir Lamiel, which used to haul holiday expresses from London to the West Country, and the railway’s popular B12 express resplendent in the apple green colour of the old London and North Eastern Railway.

There’ll be an intensive passenger service on all three days of the Gala, and demonstration goods trains will also be operated (the first of these, for the early bird photographers, will leave Holt at 7.20am each day).

On the Friday and Saturday evenings, a special beer train is scheduled, and it’s hoped that fish ‘n’ chips will also be on offer.

This is a super value day out. Rover tickets, which give unlimited travel on all trains all day, are just £19 adult, £18 senior and £11 child 5 – 15. Under 5s go free. There’s a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children, or 3 adults + 1 child) at £45, and 2- and 3-day tickets are also available. If you book in advance (online at www.nnrailway.co.uk or on 01263 820 800) before August 23rd, you’ll enjoy a generous 15% discount on the walk-up fares.

New for Old at Poppy Line

The Poppy Line's "new" steam engine, British Railways Standard Class 4 no.76084, pulled its first train for more than 40 years on Sunday 21 July.

The train was a special, reserved for shareholders of the 76084 Locomotive Company, which carried out the restoration. The engine was officially relaunched at Holt Station when John Oldcorn, Chairman of the company, broke the traditional bottle of bubbly on the front buffer beam. Our photo catches the moment. The engine was built in 1952 as part of the British Railways re-equipment programme after the Second World War. It was saved from the famous Barry scrap yard in Wales in the early '70s, but then spent some years as a very large garden ornament at a Retford address. Saved again by the 76084 company, it has been restored by enthusiast Ian Storey and his team. Painting into lined-out BR livery was carried out by the North Norfolk Railway works at Weybourne.

THE NIPPIES WERE IN TOWN...

Debbie and Lesley, two of the SiS group members dressed as "Nippies" for a recent "Afternoon Tea" held at Myrtle House B & B in aid of our local MacMillan Cancer Support Group.

18 guests attended the special invitation only event. The food was paid for by two local residents who had recently lost a very close friend ("Mutsy" David Hutton from Harefield, Middx) to cancer, and MacMillan were very supportive to him. The afternoon tea, along with a sale of hand-made items made by the SiS members, donations and an auction of the flower arrangements was a good way to make the initial donation grow to a wonderful £340! The new Chairman of the North Norfolk Branch of MacMillan Cancer Support - Nick Bell, attended to thank the guests and SiS for their hard work. Everyone seemed to enjoyed themselves and SiS hope that they can hold a similar event near Christmas in aid of Sheringham ABC - after breast cancer group who also need continued help with funding!

St. Andrew’s Methodist Church Ladies Association

The Ladies are now enjoying a summer break after a full and varied programme in our 2012-13 year. Our membership numbers have grown to 61 this year. We have been entertained by some excellent speakers, had friendly social events and outings, and of course have held a few fund raising events as well for various charities. Among these was our first Table Top Sale, which raised £400, while our bric-a-brac and jewellery stall at the Flower Festival raised £1,227.21 for the Church and charity. We held another Fashion Show in April, open to the public, where we raised £345.50 for the Motor Neurone Association. Our subscriptions and entrance fees have also swelled our coffers, and so we have been able to send out cheques this summer to the following charities, chosen by our speakers: Hillside Animal Sanctuary (East Runton) East Anglian Children’s Hospice The Big ‘C’ The Mouth and Foot Painting Association The National Trust (Felbrigg Hall) East Anglian Air Ambulance Help for Heroes The Osteoporosis Society

Dedication of Jubilee Screen

Parishioners and honorary clergy from the Quintet benefice congregated at All Saints Church, Beeston Regis on Sunday, 28 July for evensong and the dedication by the Archdeacon of Lynn, the Venerable John Ashe, of the new tower room screen.

The screen commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, and depicts the Royal Coat of Arms and that of the Duchyof Lancaster, patron of All Saints church on the side panels.

Our photograph shows the Archdeacon with churchwardens Vivienne Baker and John Meikle together with Kay Corbett who was responsible for the woodwork and Joe Flack who did the artwork. Sheringham Independent 373 August 10th 2013

Dear Margaret,

We applaud your front page leader (The Sheringham Independent issue 372 July 27 2013) ‘Blyth & Wright Raffle in Memory of Andy and Jamie) which we wholly support.

Over decades, Blyth and Wright have been the backbone of Sheringham Carnival support. Turning the clock back exactly 40 years (1973) we were privileged to serve as Committee Members under organiser local PC Peter Cripps. Sadly, as with Andy and Jamie, he is no longer with us but happy memories live on.

Looking back, we would not change those ‘fun years’ for anything – part of a team generating much needed funds for local charities. 1973 will be remembered for when a record number of floats, 48 in all, assembled on Beeston Common and paraded through the town to ‘the old Rec’ in Holt Road.

Ken Goodwin, of ‘The TV Comedians’ fame, crowned local lass Annie Ferguson. It was customary then that the Carnival Committee entered its own float. Our choice, with our children, was classical – Robin Hood. We even ‘found’ a real Greenwood tree and several square yards of turf to make it look as authentic as possible – I believe we got a prize! The original group photo shows left to right Robert Cripps, Caroline Thirtle, Andy Wright (somewhat distracted!), Suzanne Cooper, Suzanne Thirtle, Diana Cripps, Catherine Wright, Nicky Wright, Christopher Wright. Happy days, eh!

Note the strong influence the Wright family had on the Carnival float – sons and daughter of Richard, Ronnie, Maisie and Bridget. We wish every success to Sheringham Carnival 2013 in the very capable hands of organiser Stuart MacLean and his team and hope that they enjoy the occasions as much as we did 40 years ago.

Yours sincerely Charles and Jan Thirtle

Dear Margaret,

And so it goes on – this relentless passing of control over our lives and surroundings to remote and distant bureaucracies, the most recent local example of which is the proposed move of Sheringham Town Hall to the out-of-town, so-called ‘Community Centre.’ (TSI, 13/7/13, page 4, and TSI, 27/7/13, page 26)

In a more enlightened and advanced society, a real administrative Community Centre would exist in the middle of the town surrounded, amongst many other things, by outlets for necessary and useful goods, most of them locally produced.

The only way, it is suggested, in which this vision could become a reality is by transferring ownership of all the land, houses and buildings, falling within ‘the catchment area’ of the ‘Self-Managed Community’ of Sheringham, to all of the people who live here. Then, there would be no publicly or privately owned property. It would all belong to ‘The Community’ – to be used as and how all of its members, i.e. permanent residents, think fit, thereby returning to us power and control over our lives and surroundings. But, more than this, by democratically introducing this change, we would also be creating a happier, more secure world in which to live, especially in the area of housing and employment, which we could then pass on to our children and our children’s children. Yours sincerely Colin Millen, Campaign for Self-Government

Dear Margaret,

Further to your article All Aboard, this play was really brilliant, so much so and so funny that we are going to see it again!

We saw it on the opening performance and on the next day booked to see it again in the second week of its showing during the week 26 to 31 August.

We are sure many readers would like to know this, and get tickets, so as not to miss this gem. Mike and Jean Rayner
