New Lighthouse church born in Sheringham AUTOMATIC DRIVING LESSONS

A new church came into being in Sheringham this month, as the town’s Baptists moved into their brand new centre on Cromer Road, and became known as the Lighthouse Community Church, in a move to become more accessible to the community.

On Sunday 1 September, the congregation gathered at the old building for the final time to give thanks for all that had been achieved there, before walking down Holway Road go stop at the top of the town for prayers and songs. They then walked along Cromer Road and symbolically “crossed over” the main road into the new centre, known simply as “Lighthouse”, for a time of celebration, followed by coffee and doughnuts.

Cromer and Sheringham

Probus Club

The September meeting was well attended by members plus one guest at the Links Hotel in West Runton.

After another excellent lunch, George Carrick gave a fluent and interesting presentation on the historical use of railway carriages as accommodation. He mentioned early use as holiday homes in seaside locations as well as permanent homes being created by the joining together of two carriages or by building an extension on to one.

George told the story of the conversion of a railway carriage into a small cottage, situated at Holt Railway Station on the North Norfolk Railway. The interior is set up to re-create typical conditions from the 1930s and George urged those who had not already visited to go along and have a look.

The guest who attended was on his second visit and has indicated that he intends to join. He has been very complimentary about the quality of the speakers and said he had enjoyed both the food and company at lunch. The club is very pleased to announce that Keith Skipper, the local writer and broadcaster, and his wife have accepted our invitation to attend the Christmas lunch on 3 December as the Chairman’s “Guests of Honour”. At the next meeting on Tuesday 1 October, Thomas Spencer will give a talk entitled “Pensthorpe: Past, Present and Future”. Pensthorpe “wildlife and gardens” boasts lakes, woodland and abundant wildlife in the Wensum Valley. Thomas is one of the wardens and comes to us as a highly-recommended speaker on the subject.

Recent new members have found us welcoming so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend one of our monthly meetings. There is no obligation to join immediately; come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.

New Lighthouse church born in Sheringham Continued from front cover...

“We have waited at least 18 years for this day” said Ivor Charsley, one of the church leaders, “During that time we have coped with cramped and dated facilities. Now God has given us this fabulous new centre.” The need for a new building became more acute a few years ago when it emerged that the Holway Road Baptist church building required significant structural work. A re-build on that site was considered, but when the old Abbeyfield care home became available in late 2009, it soon became clear that this was the site that God had chosen for the new church centre.

“Although it has been a long journey” said Ivor, “everything has fallen into place when it needed to, including the funding, which is a sure sign that God’s hand has been upon this project from the beginning”.

The project has cost £1.5m in total, which has been raised by selling existing property, grants, loans, fund-raising and the generosity of church members. “We took up a special collection to help meet the remaining £25,000 needed to complete the fitting out of the building” explained Finance Manager Chris Gould. “That collection raised a stunning total of over £50,000, which means we will be able to purchase the rest of the equipment needed.”

The fellowship are now working hard to prepare for the grand opening of the new centre on Saturday 21 September. The public are invited to view this striking new building from 10.30am to 12 noon, and enjoy coffee and cakes in the café. There will be a special guest appearance by Daniel Cutting, the Guinness Book of Records football “keep ups” champion, who will be demonstrating his skills. The new “soft play” area for younger children will also be available.

The main celebration of the day will follow the official opening at 2pm, and the day will conclude with tea and more cake.

“This does feel like we’ve now arrived” said Pastor Bryan Pickard, “But in actual fact this is really only the start of our journey. We want to share this wonderful new facility with our community in North Norfolk, and show them the joy we have in knowing God”.

Paul Thetford Photographic Exhibition

Paul Theford will be exhibiting his unique photographs at Upper Sheringham Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday 28/29th September from 10 am to 4pm.

He uses a Sony Digital SLR - "I take all my photographs 'raw' rather than shooting in jpeg because that way you decide what the picture will be and not the camera," Paul commented.

Paul has lived in the Sheringham all his life and is probably better known by local people for his flooring services but he has a 30 year passion for photography, though he started taking his photography seriously about four years ago.

He is self taught and specializes in land and sea scapes. This is his second exhibition and he has done two Aylsham shows and the feedback was amazing and very positive - his work being very reasonably priced.

"I have been commissioned for some work and would welcome even more. I also offer a sensor cleaning service as well as mounting and framing services.

QUIET HAVEN

"My aim is to work full time on my photography, with a view to opening my own gallery."

Quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, but within a short walk of the shops and sea. Have you found us yet? Our light and airy restaurant overlooks the garden, where the steam trains puff by! It is cosy and candlelit during the winter evenings.

Keep Safe this Winter

Gas Safety Week is an annual Safety Awareness week trying to raise the profile and importance of both natural and LPG gas safety.

Its aims are to encourage the public to take care of your gas appliances especially as we approach the start of the heating season. It is co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register with support from the gas industry including retailers, manufacturers, consumer bodies and their Gas Safe registered engineers.

♦ Twenty one million households in United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey use gas (natural and LPG) for heating, hot water and cooking, yet we take it for granted that our boilers, cookers and gas fires are safe. Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

♦ Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

♦ Gas Safe Register estimate that there are a hard core of around 7,500 illegal gas fitters operating across the UK

and up to 250,000 illegal gas jobs may be carried out each year (Gas Safe Register Research 2009).

♦ Although there is awareness that gas appliances need to be safety checked annually, 43% of Britons don’t do it, and 10% have gas appliances which have never been checked

(Gas Safety Week Research 2011).

This year sees the third Gas Safety Week taking place, from 16th – 22nd September 2013. With national advertising, media coverage and events throughout the week, we want gas safety messages to reach far and wide right at the start of heating season.

KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE We rely on our gas boilers, cookers and fires to keep warm, have hot baths and showers and cook hot meals. It’s important that gas appliances are safety checked every year and regularly serviced to help keep us safe. Just as you get your car MOT completed and serviced every year, you should have your home gas safety checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you rent out your property, even to family or friends, it is compulsory by law that

this is done annually to avoid the risk of invalidating your home insurance. You can find a list of Gas Safe registered engineers in your area on their website www.gassaferegister.co.uk

Don't forget to check your engineer's Gas Safe ID card. They should all carry one with them. If you are unsure, you can check this also on the Gas Safe website or by calling 0800 408 5500

Getting your appliances regularly serviced can actually save you money too as it helps to ensure that your system is running efficiently, thereby reducing fuel costs. It prolongs the life of your system much the same as having your car serviced does for your vehicle.

Remember also that if you have had a new boiler installed in recent years, then annual servicing of such helps to validate your boiler warranty.

There are a number of Gas Safe plumbing & heating engineers in the Sheringham Independent Service Guide and throughout the magazine. (Information supplied by the Gas Safety Register and Aquaflow of Sheringham)

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Mimosa, Kingston and Harvey, three of the kittens from the feral colony, have left for new homes and the other five are now all available for re-homing. Kirsch made a good recovery and is a very loving little lad. Dorothy and Felicity the dumped kittens (also mentioned last time) have now gone to new homes. We do still, however, have lots more kittens available in most colours and sizes, all just waiting for that special person to come along and claim them.

more contact and play with their fosterer’s children, her kittens, Hocus and Pocus, should soon also be available.

You may have already seen in the press the story of Nugget, Sometimes, persistence does pay as we have discovered recently with the little cat one little cat. Unfortunately she moved the Sonny and Cher, two recent arrivals, years but now kittens before we could trap her and although she returned for food now up for adoption happily reunited nothing was seen of the kittens for some time. Finally, the gentleman with her family, who had been feeding her was able to trap her and the kittens and they because we discovered she was micro- chipped when she was handed in came into care. WORMING ADVICE

can cause damage to tissues and organs and in rare cases with very heavy worm burdens; fitting, anaemia and eventually death.  Some worms pose a potential risk to human health as well as the health of their host (your pet). Children, the elderly and people with compromised immunity are most at risk.  You cannot prevent your pet from contracting worms but you can regularly ‘manage’ the situation with a good worming regime.

Different types of worm

 Roundworm – common in puppies from 2 weeks old. Cause lethargy, bloating, diarrhoea and weight loss. RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH.  Tapeworm – eggs are present in the environment, linked closely with fleas. RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH.  Whipworm – seen more commonly in kennelled dogs, symptoms include diarrhoea.  Hookworm – can cause anaemia and diarrhoea RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH.  Lungworm – caught from slugs and snails, cause breathing problems and effect blood clotting. May also lead to paralysis and is sometime fatal.  Heartworm – spread by mosquitoes causes coughing and anorexia, can be fatal. UK is currently free from heartworm though it is found in southern Europe, the USA and Australia. TREATMENT REQUIRED AS PART OF THE PET TRAVEL SCHEME From the list above it is clear that not only do worms pose problems for our pets but they are also a potential problem for us too. Even more reason to get up to date with worming routines. Experts recommend you worm your pet at least 4 times a year, however younger animals and those at greater risk, for example keen hunters, may require more regular worming.

Poppy Line’s Retirement Natural Shoreline Treat for Dean of Norwich Photography Exhibition

There’s a long-standing tradition of railway enthusiasm amongst clergymen, so it was fitting for the Poppy Line to mark the forthcoming retirement of the Very Rev Graham Smith, Dean of Norwich, by giving him the opportunity to travel on the footplate of “Oliver Cromwell”, the massive steam engine that’s visiting the railway for this weekend’s Steam Gala. And as “Cromwell” once hauled Norwich – London expresses, the engine was very much an apposite choice for the Dean.

Local artist Sharma Jamieson has two exhibitions of natural shoreline images - at the Rocket House Cafe, Cromer, and Priory Maze Cafe, Beeston Regis, Sheringham through September and October - where her framed photographs and canvases can be viewed and bought. Sharma writes ‘I feel that North Norfolk is a part of the world you choose to visit, rather than passing through, and this adds to its uniqueness.

The Dean of Norwich on the footplate of no.70013 “Oliver Cromwell” taken by the railway’s General Manager, Trevor Eady.

The Dean travelled on the 09.48 train from Sheringham last month. Climbing down from the footplate, he said “I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It’s a wonderful machine, and the warm welcome of the crew helped make this a very special occasion for me.”

Dean Smith retires later in September, and will be moving away from Norfolk – taking fond memories of North Norfolk’s steam railway with him.

I was drawn here seven years ago and live in Sheringham. The ever changing face of the seashore is so diverse it brings an opportunity to meet and photograph some very strange and exotic sea life, illuminated by the vast sea skies. NEWS FROM NORTH NORFOLK COMMUNITY TRANSPORT

North Norfolk Community Transport (NNCT) is delighted to announce that its bid to the Big Lottery Fund, on which its Chief Officer, Eileen Oliver, worked for over a year, has been successful. The award of £168,000, to be paid over 3 years, is to be used to develop community transport in the areas of Cromer and Sheringham. It will enable NNCT to research the unmet need, particularly in outlying parts of the area, and on the outskirts of the towns, for transport into the towns to shop and use other facilities, and, especially important, to get to appointments for the full range of medical services whether at one of the hospitals, doctors’ or dental surgeries, the chiropodist, or whatever. Once the need has been ascertained then existing services will be developed and new ones provided to meet those needs. There will be two main ways of providing the transport : NNCT’s Dial-aBus, door-to-door minibuses will take people into the towns and provide group transport for community and charity groups to meetings or on outings, while the mediride service, provided by volunteer drivers in their own cars, will take people to their medical appointments. The Big Lottery award will fund a new minibus, a part-time project officer to research and set up the services, and finance to help run the services during the early years. The project will start early 2014, with services getting started a little later once the preliminary work has been done. NNCT already provides some services in these areas, but only on a small scale. The expanded scheme will need more volunteer drivers both to drive the minibuses and to drive people to medical appointments. All drivers are paid their expenses (currently 42p. per mile). If any readers have need of these services, or know of others who need help, or who would be interested in the possibility of becoming a volunteer driver, then we would be delighted to hear from them. We can be contacted on 01263 839009, or emailed at nnct@btconnect.com; our website is www.northnorfolkcommunitytransport.co.uk NNCT has recently signed a partnership agreement with Victory Housing who themselves are undertaking research into transport need, especially among their own residents, and who are providing some funding. Taken together, the outlook for the transport isolated of North Norfolk is suddenly looking brighter!

A Taste of what it’s like to be blind – on a plate

We are delighted to be working with the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind as we launch this year’s Grove event in the Norfolk and Norwich Food Festival.

Together we are hosting a prestige evening on October 4th where guests will be blindfolded to sample their dinners – unaware where the food is situated on their plates.

It’s a great opportunity to sample some of chef Charlie Hodson’s award-winning fare, created as always with a much locally-sourced produce as possible, but this time with the added quirk of not being able to see what you’re doing with your knife and fork! And as always Charlie has some delightful food waiting for all those brave enough to go under the blindfold… “Those of us lucky enough to have the use of our sight tend to make some big mental decisions when we see the food arrive on the tables, and utilise our other senses – taste, touch, smell – after that,” said Charlie. “So it will be very interesting to hear if, for example, people notice the flavours more intensely, or the aromas as the food comes up to the table. “It’s going to be a lovely event and we are really looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to having to concentrate on using other senses as they eat.”

The charity’s events manager and former Norwich City footballer, Jeremy Goss said: “Just imagine trying to eat a Sunday roast when you can’t see to cut the beef, slice a roast potato or identify where the carrots and peas are. It would be a nightmare for sighted people, but it’s a situation blind people are confronted with every day. It’s compounded when they are eating out when it can be embarrassing to be seen touching your food.”

The Blind Dining Experience is being held on October 4 at 7.30pm, and will include a talk on how blind people cope by the NNAB’s leisure co-ordinator Mark Smith, who is himself blind.

Mr Smith said: “Like everyone else, I love eating out with family and friends, but it can prove difficult at times when you literally can’t see what’s in front of you. I’m hoping that by highlighting the situation and giving people the opportunity to sample what it’s like for themselves, both restaurants and diners will understand the need to be tolerant.”

The 2012 Norfolk and Norwich Food Festival

saw the very successful Jazz Tapas come to the Grove, and this year we’re delighted to be working with the NNAB, who are dedicated to helping visually impaired people live as independently as possible, reaching more than 5000 Norfolk adults and children each year with a range of services.

The NNAB receives no State funding, relying completely on donations, legacies and fundraising events.

Only a few tickets remain for the evening, at £40 a head for the locally-sourced three course meal. Diners will not be expected to wear blindfolds throughout the meal – simply to try the experience to learn more about the problems blind people face.

Please call the NNAB on 01603 629558 to book tickets.

Sheringham Medical Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG)

September Monthly News - Training of Junior Doctors

Sheringham medical practice has been a training practice for doctors wanting to become GP’s for 8 years. Following a recent visit from the Regulatory authority for the East of England the practice has just been approved for another 4 years as a training practice. The practice was delighted to have had some very positive feedback from the visit such as ‘a friendly and caring environment’, ‘the staff are very friendly and positive’ and it is ‘a good learning climate’. The usual training period to become a GP is 3 to 4 years after having qualified as a Doctor and worked for several years in a hospital setting. Trainee GP’s in a Practice are usually known as Registrars.

Until now Dr Martyn Scott and Dr Ian Smith have been very involved in the GP training and development of these qualified doctors as part of their GP training while they are in the practice for periods of 6 to 12 months. From the end of June 2013 Dr Simon Downs has joined the Practice team seeing patients on

Fridays and also supporting and teaching the GP trainees. Dr Downs is an Associate GP Dean at the East of England Deanery.

The practice is pleased to announce that the two GP trainees that will be attached to the surgery are Dr Madeleine Lameris, who is in her third year of GP training and will be with the practice for one year, and Dr Pahlavi Dave, who is in her first year of GP training and will be with the practice for 6 months. They will both have their own surgeries but be supervised by their GP trainer. As these two female doctors become more experienced their surgeries will operate the same as the other GP’s working within the Practice, including home visits.

Copies of the latest surgery newsletter are available at reception in the surgery, at Boots and Lloyds pharmacy plus the local library. Surgery Open day Saturday 28

September 10am – 1pm – Look out for a leaflet with more details PPG AGM – Everyone welcome Wednesday 16 October 7pm - 8pm at the surgery.

PPGs are now established in most GP surgeries throughout the country. Here in Sheringham we are a group of patients and staff, who work with the practice to improve lines of communication between the patients and the practice and contribute to the quality of patient services. We meet on a monthly basis – copies of our minutes are available for you to see on our notice board in the surgery.

If you would like to speak to someone confidentially in the PPG, either with a concern or you would like to get involved, then please do contact Pauline Craske (Practice Manager) Tel 01263 820512 or Noel Gant (patient member) Tel 01263 825538.

Sheringham History Group

On Saturday 7 September, the Sheringham History Group arranged a group visit to King's Lynn. Approximately two dozen intrepid voyagers participated in the journey by small coach arriving in time for a tea break. This was closely followed and led by an excellent tour guide on a very informative walking tour along pedestrianised areas.

The visit and guide was arranged by our chairman, Hugh Bradbury and tailored to the needs and interests of our group on the day.

As for the historic information, there was plenty - beginning with St. Margaret's Church founded in 1101 and still remaining. There is a Heritage trail to walk for those with more time, but for us it was an introduction of Norfolk history in this town originally called Bishop's Lynn.

There was a brief time to do some shopping or relaxing on the first Saturday of September in the year of 2013 before returning to Sheringham. All went well.

To the People of Sheringham

Andy Tanser and Andrea Bassil, two artists with national and international reputations have been commissioned to produce an illustrated Timeline of Sheringham which will be situated between the station and the new Tesco’s store. Andy and Andrea spent a day at the hub on the 30th July discussing with many of the local people ideas. As a result of the information they have been given they have now drawn up two rough drafts and invite the people of Sheringham to vote and contribute to this stage of the development as decisions about the concept and contents now need to be made. Concept Andy and Andrea have developed two concepts for your consideration. • The first is a chronological time line placing as many of the illustrations in a historical sequence as can be achieved in the given size. 1.2metres / 0.6metre • The second has a panel with a chronological time line on but the illustrations have been grouped to tell the story of Sheringham in a narrative structure. • We are giving you a choice of a flat coloured back ground or pattern of the sea. PLEASE VOTE FOR YOUR PREFFERED OPTIONS by the end of September By email to andrea.bassil@ntlworld.com Or by talking to Noel Grant 10 Chesnut Grove, Sherringham, NR26 8PH 01263 825538 noel217@btinternet.com Content Andy and Andrea are very keen to have chosen the most important events and locations. If there is anything that has been omitted this is your chance to tell them so important adjustments can be made before the final art work is produced. Please inform Andrea if you find any incorrect information. They are also missing information you may be able to help supply: 1. When were the sewers laid ? 2. When was the Cricket Club built ? 3. When were gas lamps introduced ? 4. The dates of Beeston Bumps being used to listen to E-boats ? 5. When were the sea walls built ? 6. The dates of Sheringham Primary School ?

7. Is the correct name for Sheringham Primary School Sheringham Community Primary School ? 8. The dates of the Little Theatre ? 9. When were the beach huts built ? NOTES 1. We are seeking reproduction rights to all the logos and several photos. If they are not granted we will either make substitutions or replace with illustrated versions. 2. The rough blue ribbons with white text on will be replaced with illustrated patterns of Ganseys. 3. The photos used here are mainly borrowed and many will be replaced with illustrations. 4. The Salvation Army are providing a replacement photo of Brian Peg conducting the Salvation Army Band on a lifeboat. They may also provide photos of old fisherman they have the reproduction rights to so the characters shown here may change. GIVE US YOUR VIEWS You can visit the Oddfellows and see larger reproductions of these images allowing you to read the text and see more detail. Sheringham BeachLife activity week attracts record crowds The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people on Sheringham sea-front last month attracted over 200 children and young people, in a week of glorious weather.

Planning for the event started last autumn, following the success of last year’s mission. BeachLife was organised by the churches in Sheringham, and run by an army of over 50 volunteers, mainly from Sheringham churches, but joined by helpers from as far afield as County Durham. The event was supported by Scripture Union.

The activities kicked off each day with the “Beach Special”, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Lees for music, games, drama and fun and to introduce the day’s theme, which was one of the miracles of Jesus each day. Guest appearances from the Funky Chicken, the Gorilla, and “Mrs Viennetta” with her bizarre ice-creams added to the frolics. The children

and young people then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” sessions to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.

The afternoons saw an “egg parachute” challenge, micro-raft racing, mini-Olympics, and the special appearance of Christian illusionist Steve Price, who enthralled the crowds with his skill as well as delivering a gospel message. There was a circusthemed afternoon with barbecue on the last day, however, and the Lees resounded with laughter as over 150 children and young people and their families enjoyed circus activities, a gladiator challenge, space-hoppers, and two bouncy castles.

Evening activities for over-8s included a treasure hunt, Laser-quest and beach sports, putting, and a “Sheropoly” trail around the town, all of which were well attended.

“BeachLife has been another huge success, helped by the glorious weather this year” said

Rev Pete Skivington, co-ordinator of the event. “We had record numbers of children and young people attending, and having had loads of fun whilst finding out more about God. Feedback has been extremely positive, with many people asking when next year’s BeachLife would be, so that they can plan their holidays in Sheringham. And it has also strengthened the links between the churches in Sheringham, as we have needed to work as a team to make this happen.”

Next year’s outreach will run from Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August 2014. But Sheringham youngsters will not have to wait until next summer to continue the fun, as the team are already planning for another “BeachLife Extra” day in February.

Visit www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk for more information about the event.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818

The Sheringham Lifeboat was launched on Tuesday 3 September at 19.30 hrs at the request of Humber Coastguard to go to the assistance of a small rib with three persons on board thought to be in trouble approximately ½ mile seaward of Beeston Hill.

A member of the public was ‘sea gazing’ from Beeston Hill when they thought they saw three persons waving from the small rib and thought they were requesting help. With no other way to verify the situation Humber Coastguard requested the Lifeboat to launch and investigate. The three people were found to be safe and well but were escorted back to shore by the lifeboat.

The Lifeboat was rehoused and ready for service at 20.15hrs Launched with good intent.

Sheringham Park makes the top ten in new ‘secret walks’ list

UK’s top ten secret walks revealed for the Great British Walk 2013

To celebrate the launch of The Great British Walk last month (the National Trust’s annual walking festival), the Trust has revealed the top ten secret trails that can only be accessed by foot, with Sheringham Park in Norfolk making the list.

The list has been carefully selected by experts at the National Trust to showcase unique walking experiences. This comes following new research, which found that 82% of people in the East of England like discovering new places when on a walk, with 60% describing a feeling of euphoria on reaching an amazing viewpoint.

The top ten secret discovery walks are:

1. The White Cliffs of Dover The land acquired by the National Trust last year is now opened up to the public for the first time, allowing visitors to walk a new route to the South Foreland Lighthouse, which offers

a previously unseen view across this iconic landscape.

2. Minnowburn, Northern Ireland The Giant's Ring is the largest henge and stone circle in Ireland. It was built around the same time as Stonehenge and Avebury in 2,700BC, but its story is little known. This two mile walk starting from the car-park reveals a hidden side to the well know city of Belfast, which lies less than three miles away.

3. Erddig, Wales A love story between two of Erddig's family servants has been brought to life in a walk taking in rarely visited parts of the estate. Retrace the footsteps of where the lovers met and see for yourself, though treasured mementoes how love blossomed.

A Big Thank You to Weybourne Community Fund

photo courtesy Bob Wilkinson 4. Sizergh Castle, south Lake District Hidden and hard to find – the secret here is a 1,600 year old yew tree, buried deep in the woods.

5. Sparrow Dale, Sheringham Park, Norfolk Often overlooked by visitors to the park, Sparrow Dale is a hidden valley that’s perfect for wildlife lovers. It has a wide variety of trees making it a great place to spot birds of prey.

On Wednesday 28 August, 29 members and friends of the Weybourne Good Companions enjoyed their annual outing.

This year the venue was Wroxham for a one and half hour Broads tour trip with a cream tea to follow at Wroxham Barns, both recommended!! With grateful thanks to the Weybourne Community Fund, we were able to offer the round trip by coach, at a reduced cost, as they settled the account with Marrett's Chariots, whose driver made sure we were all comfortable and secure.

The Community Fund does so much for the villagers in Weybourne, with funds raised at their excellent recent Fun Day & May Craft Fair and we, in the senior age group who always try to support them, feel very privileged to live in a village with such caring folk who give up their time for the benefit of all.

Thank you WGC Valerie Ball, on behalf of the Weybourne Good Companions

Dear Margaret,

During another splendid Carnival week in Sheringham this year, it was a pleasure to be part of a small event during this time that promoted Norfolk Freemasonry in the Town.

From 7 to 10 August, a new 'Information Trailer' was based on Ottendorf Green, and many local residents, as well as those on holiday, came along to have a chat and find out more about the organisation and the local and national charitable causes it supports.

For many it was a surprise to see such a prominent display (see photograph) and it provided an opportunity to talk directly with the public, answer questions and (in a few cases) dispel some myths about being a 'secret society'. It was also nice to meet fellow Masons and their families from around the country, all enjoying holidays in Sheringham and in particular the Carnival.

The event was very successful, with some people expressing an interest in contacting a local Lodge and joining over 3000 other Masons in Norfolk, and I would like to thank all those members of the public who came up to find out what we're all about during the week.

If anyone reading this was unable to come along, but would like to know more about Freemasonry in Norfolk then please visit www.norfolkmasons.org.uk Yours sincerely, Simon Pegg

Dear Margaret,

Through your excellent correspondence page, may I write congratulations to the Committee of the Weybourne Horticultural Show, on giving villagers and friends a splendid day on Saturday 31 August.

It seemed there were many more entries in some of the categories, and how lovely to see the interest from the village children, after an absence of a few years. The display of work from pupils at Kelling School, was an eye catching backdrop to the exhibits in the hall, and the newly placed Floral Art section at the top of the hall, was inspired. The displays were stunning, as were the floral and pot plant categories.

As for the Home Produce, Vegetable & Fruit and Craft sections, their entries looked the best ever. The paintings were beautiful, and pencil drawings donated by one of the exhibitors created great interest at the end of the auction. The raffle prizes all donated, by businesses and villagers, were eagerly snapped up by the winners. All in all, I think this was one of the best shows ever, in recent history.

Well done, all of you. The villagers certainly showed their support this year. Valerie Ball, Weybourne

Dear Margaret,

The people of Sheringham should be aware that some of the advantages that they currently enjoy are now under a real and present threat. Chief among these is the existence of the Poppy Line, one of our major tourist attractions. If the NNR is allowed to proceed with its plans to turn the Poppy line into just another link in a regular train service between Norwich and Holt or beyond, it cannot possibly retain its present character, and Sheringham will lose its fame as a unique, steam train town, and will become just another stop on a main line route. This would be a disaster for our town. Another advantage that we currently enjoy is that of free access to our main street via Station Road, the main entry point to Sheringham. Not a great privilege, you might say – no more than we have a right to expect. But this too could be denied to us if the NNR is allowed to build level crossing gates over this key route, which will be closed every time the regular train services pass through. The Shannocks of the 1960s abandoned their station and opted for a bare stopping platform instead precisely in order to get rid of their level crossing gates, which even then were an intolerable obstruction to traffic. To restore them now would not be in the public interest. If motorists learn to avoid Station Road because of the regular blockages there, what are the alternatives? Any suggestion of using Beeston Road as a main entry point to our town is, of course, a joke. This leaves only Church Street as an alternative. But the Church Street bridge is narrow and dangerous, as is Church Street itself between the bridge and the church. Surely our traffic problems are bad enough already without adding to them. Will the existence of level crossing gates encourage people to come to Sheringham? I rather doubt it. They are more likely to avoid our town as it acquires a reputation for traffic congestion.

Our shopkeepers too should be concerned about the NNR’s plans. If our town is regularly bisected by trains trundling slowly through its heart, it is our shopping streets that will be cut off, but access to Tesco will remain unimpeded. Drivers might well come to think, ‘Why risk a jam? Just go to Tesco.’ In short, the NNR’s plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway will be an unmitigated disaster for Sheringham if they are allowed to proceed. What are our local councillors, who ought to be governing in the interests of Sheringham instead of those of the NNR, doing about it? Let’s see, shall we? First, half of Ottendorf Green, once a pleasant, open, green public space for us all to enjoy, was handed over to the Railway Interest. They built a track over it. Then they were allowed to extend that track over our main street, linking up with the main line, all with no public consultation whatsoever. Now the signal box has been moved, and level crossing warning signs have gone up on Station Road. What do you think is going to happen next? If the NNR decides to throw up crossing gates over our main street, will they ask us for our permission first? Will they even ask us for our opinion? No, our irresponsible councillors will simply nod their plans through again in the same way as before. Their behaviour has been absolutely disgraceful. I have never lived in a town whose local government has been so blatantly neglectful of the interests of those people who elected it. We certainly need a referendum on this issue before the plans of the Melton Constable Trust are allowed to proceed any further. I suggest that we should all write to our councillors to demand one. If it is refused, they should do the honourable thing and resign in disgrace. Ross Wordie Sheringham

Circular Railway to Norwich

LAND PURCHASE FIRST STEP TO ESTABLISHING ORBITAL RAIL ROUTE - New fund raising drive launched

The ambition to establish a Norfolk Orbital railway has moved forward with the purchase of a vital piece of former railway track bed at Holt – and the charity behind the scheme, the Melton Constable Trust, is appealing for £85,000 to secure the next stretch.

The eventual aim of the company behind the Norfolk Orbital railway, the Holt, Melton Constable and Fakenham Railway (HMCFR), is to link the existing rail heads at Holt on the North Norfolk Railway and Dereham on the Mid Norfolk Railway, via Fakenham, to create a passenger carrying railway line that brings rail travel back to communities throughout Norfolk that are currently entirely reliant on car and bus transport. Both the existing railways have connections to Network Rail at Sheringham and Wymondham respectively and the line would be built on the track beds of railways closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching axe.

The first stage, however, is to bring a regular rail service to Norwich back to the town of Holt. The purchase of the key section of former trackbed to the south of the North Norfolk Railway’s station on the outskirts of Holt brings this aim a vital step nearer reality. The company has also agreed terms for the purchase of a further section of land and paid a £15,000 deposit.

“This is major progress of the most practical kind, said Trevor Bailey, one of the trustees of The Melton Constable Trust, the registered charity that plans to rebuild a railway extending from the North Norfolk Railway's present terminus into and beyond Holt. “Now we can offer the best of reasons why the public and organisations should give financial support towards the next stage.

The Trust is now launching an appeal to raise ÂŁ85,000 to secure the next stretch, crucially requiring ÂŁ20,000 by 30 November this year. Last year the Trust had a significant success in being accepted into the Big Give, one of the country's main challenge funds for charities. The Big Give partially matched donations from the public.

David Bill MBE, a trustee of the charity whose family long worked on the railway before its closure in 1964, had been impressed by public support. “We were amazed how enthusiastically people from the local area and all over the country responded to our initial,

quite small scale, fund-raising push. It is down to them that the Trust now owns this vital piece of land. We are today launching a new fundraising campaign to enable us to buy other key sections. We need every donation we can get in the coming weeks.

The Trust's immediate intention is to secure the land for the route, so that nothing can physically block the building of the railway, the construction of which will be subject to the normal statutory permissions and standards.

The plan, drawn up by expert railway engineers, W S Atkins, takes the railway for part of its route onto the wide area of land alongside the Holt bypass, the road having taken the original trackbed. There are detailed design issues but Norfolk County Council has made it clear that it has no objections in principle.

Now 'Wheelchair Friendly'

SHERINGHAM 01263 824444

An agreement has been signed with the North Norfolk Railway covering the extension of the railway into Holt and the principle of a through transport service from the Bittern Line.

The Trust's Patron, Lord Walpole, had received news of the first land purchase with delight. “I am so pleased. So much work has been put into this project. Now we can see it starting to become real in no uncertain terms. I urge everyone who cares about public transport, the history and the future of the rail system, car-free tourism, the local economy and the Norfolk environment to support the next stage with any donations they can afford before the end of November.

Local tourist organisations have welcomed the development. Mark Durrant, operations manager at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, said: "It looks like exciting times are ahead for the Melton Constable Trust with works now going ahead to prepare land for the potential extension to the heart of Holt itself. Tourism is the largest industry in the region and Kelling Heath fully support the proposals to improve the accessibility both to and from this unique part of North Norfolk.

“There is no doubt this development would increase visitor numbers to the region and provide a well needed boost to the shops, restaurants, accommodation providers and businesses not only in and around Holt but also in the wider North Norfolk area."

Donations can be made to The Melton Constable Trust, The Railway Institute, 6 Briston Road, Melton Constable, Norfolk, NR24 2DA.

Trevor Bailey emphasised that the Trust's first Contact details: 01263 740044 or concern was to restore train services to Holt 07779 345437 (9.00 am to 5.00 pm) and beyond in order to provide efficient and feedback@norfolk-orbital-railway.co.uk environmentally friendly public transport. or www.norfolk-orbital-railway.co.uk. “The North Norfolk Railway has already been reconnected to Network Rail's Bittern Line at Sheringham. Youth HUBs aim to be centre of local Youth Communities

North Norfolk Youth HUBs is the new service supported by youth charity MAP, which is committed to providing an open and friendly space in which young people can socialise and take part in FREE, enjoyable, positive activities and local projects. The HUBs aim to support and provide useful information to all young people aged 13-19 years old in North Norfolk. The activities and focus of each HUB will be discussed and planned by the young members themselves, as will the taster sessions and any future community projects with which the HUBs will become engaged. The intention is for the HUBs to meet every fortnight.

Will, the Senior Youth Worker for the NNYH project, says, “These HUBs are a welcoming space where young people can relax and enjoy themselves with the support of trained Youth Workers. They also provide a great opportunity for those young people who wish to grow in confidence or gain valuable experience in planning, fundraising and leadership.”

Will and Hannah, both from MAP, have already had great success with the new Cromer HUB, and are about to open another three HUBs in Stalham, Mundesley, and Sheringham

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GROWING HERBS ON THE DANUBE which would indicate that the chef did indeed use them when preparing the meals.

The temperatures and conditions on the Danube can be quite extreme, we had readings of 90 degrees plus but it can get very cold, wet and windy and if the herbs can survive in such difficult conditions it only confirms that we could all grow herbs in our own gardens, containers or on the window ledge.

Advertisements for river cruises seem to dominate television at the moment especially Viking who sponsor Midsommer Murders, Poirot and numerous other whodunnits.

Their ships claim many features to attract customers including a walking track on the deck (26 laps to the mile), various games and sports including putting and outdoor chess and perhaps most surprisingly an organic herb garden ‘atop the deck’.

When we chose to travel along the Danube with this company I was interested to check whether there was in fact an herb garden and although the use of the term ‘garden’ is a slight exaggeration there were indeed herbs growing on the deck although they were planted in a series of small containers. Most of the commonest herbs were there such as mint, sage and thyme and they looked well trimmed

Planting herbs in a container is particularly good because it means that you can have them in a convenient place near to the kitchen. It also means that it is possible to move the herbs around so that they receive the summer sun and the winter protection they require in order to survive. Containers can be planted up with herbs as easily as any other plants, look attractive and smell delicious. Variegated or coloured forms add extra interest.

Herbs can easily be grown from seed but to save time ready grown plants are always available from markets, garden centres, supermarkets and even your local greengrocer. If you have bought large plants split the clumps to make more plants and space them out in the container. Depending on the variety you should be able to fit six plants in a 12 inch container.

• Suitable herbs. Most herbs are suitable for containers, providing they have welldrained compost and a sunny position. Small herbs such as chives, basil, marjoram, oregano, parsley and sage are particularly suited to container cultivation.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB

Our very enjoyable summer season started with our fundraising Strawberry Tea at the Village Hall at Upper Sheringham in late July. We had a super attendance on a bright sunny day, with a very cheerful atmosphere, and lots of fresh strawberries and cream and delicious home-made cakes on offer. Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us and made our event so successful.

In August, demonstrator Crystal Dyball gave us a colourful and exciting demonstration of her own particular style, together with some brilliant tips for home flower arranging and decoration, and her hubby’s expertise in creating some very original frames didn’t go unnoticed!

September saw us welcoming Pat Barton with her theme ‘Plan B’, demonstrating how versatility and quick thinking ensures a back-up when ‘Plan A’ goes wrong! Her humorous commentary caused many a laugh, and her six very colourful and original arrangements were a delight to see and to take home if you were a lucky raffle winner.

We meet on the first Thursday in the month at St Andrews Church, Sheringham, starting at 7.30pm, with refreshments available from 7pm. On 3 October we will be having an ‘in house’ workshop and guests would be very welcome. Shirley on 01263 825059 has more details. Sheringham Independent 376 September 21st 2013

Larger herbs such as rosemary need regular trimming. Tender herbs such as coriander and basil are fairly easy to grow in a container if they are given winter protection, but - since these herbs often deteriorate over winter – they are best re-sown annually to ensure a new growth of vigorous plants. Mint is so invasive it is best planted in a separate pot.

• Pesticides. Avoid pesticides whenever possible. If you must use them, select those suitable for use on edible crops and that have short persistence. Check for pests and diseases regularly and deal with them promptly.

• Freezing to preserve. Store chopped herb trimmings in ice for use in the winter when herbs are scarce. Thaw, and drain them if necessary before use.

The cruise itself was excellent with passengers from all around the world, but the greatest number came from the USA, and the reason for this brings us back to the power of television. It seems that in America, Viking River Cruises sponsor Downton Abbey and many of the Americans we spoke to were absolutely fanatical about the programme and to satisfy them the two series of the programme were available, on demand, in the cabins. SUMMER NOTES FROM THE COMMONS

What a summer we have had – after the long cold spring we have had the best summer since 2006 according to Met Office records. This good weather has contributed to a number of good sightings around the Commons and a selection of observations made during June, July and August follows.

Common. Another rare visitor, the Clouded Yellow butterfly was found by Mark (July 5) and a Mediterranean Gull was seen flying over. A Poplar Hawkmoth was noted (July 9) and Mark spotted a Hobby (July 12). Another Hobby was seen circling over Pill-box Hill (July 16) and the uncommon hoverfly, Volucella inflata, was briefly observed feeding at bramble flowers before flying off. The first White Admiral of the year was noted (July 17) and a Black-tailed Skimmer turned up (July 19). The small colony of White-letter Hairstreak butterflies that seems to have established itself on a Japanese Elm hybrid were in evidence again (July 26) and Purple Hairstreaks were also seen around the tops of oaks. Also this day Mark reported Brown Hawker, Ruddy Darter and Banded Demoiselle dragonflies as well as a juvenile Firecrest. Some consistently easterly winds at this time probably brought a Dark-green Fritillary butterfly to the Common, most likely from its normal coastal colonies at Horsey and Winterton. The last such an occurrence of this butterfly was in 1992. Six-spot Burnet moths were also seen and were also probably wind-blown from the nearby cliffs at Beeston Regis.

Mark Clements, who regularly records wildlife on the Commons, saw two Common Buzzards heading south, a Lesser Whitethroat and a Brown Argus butterfly (June 3) followed by White-letter Hairstreak a Broad-bordered Bee-hawkmoth (June 4). A Ringed Plover was seen by Mark Butterflies, which had been scarce, were also (August 4) and a Whimbrel followed (August beginning to appear, although most species 10), also reported by Mark were a Stoat and a were emerging up to two weeks later than Firecrest (August 21). The Common Blue and Orange-tip following day (August 27) a Common Redstart were all noted. About 20 and a Migrant Hawker were noted. A warm Canada Geese headed west evening (August 30) gave the opportunity (June 9) and Red Kite, of watching a Noctule Bat hunting over the Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Hobby Common and another migrant, a Wheatear, and Common Buzzard were was seen by Mark (August 31) on the recently all observed overflying the baled grass as well as five Common Buzzards Common within an hour (June passing over. 11). In addition, Large Red, Azure and Blue-tailed Towards the end of August Natural England Damselflies plus Broadcontractors began mowing some areas of bodied Chaser were all out the Commons. NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS

Tuesday 17 October at ST ANDREW METHODIST CHURCH, CROMER ROAD, SHERINGHAM 1pm – 3.30pm and 5pm – 7pm

Swap Hibernation for Blood Donation

With the days getting shorter and the long summer days drawing to an end, NHS Blood and Transplant is asking people to swap their sofa for a donation chair at one of the upcoming blood donation sessions in local area.

The change of weather also sees the start of the colds and flu season which can mean existing donors are unable to donate whilst they are unwell. With only four per cent of the eligible population giving blood regularly it is important that others come forward to donate blood if they are able to do so.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “For many, October can be a quieter time of the year socially and, with the dark nights drawing in, it can be tempting to stay indoors. However, we would ask people to fight the urge to hibernate and save lives instead. If you are generally in good health you could potentially help to save up to three lives with every donation you give. Colds and flu can have a knock-on effect with blood stocks, this is why we need people to act now to help save and improve patients’ lives across England and North Wales.”

Every day hospitals in England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood to treat patients with a range of health issues including patients with cancer, patients in A&E and women needing blood during maternity care.

North Norfolk’s Fairy Dog Mothers

Your Woof Is Our Command!

Zoe Hall and June Phipps, both members of Animal Magic Dog Club have been appointed as the club’s very own Fairy Dog Mothers.

The scheme has been set up to allow the club to support local dog charities with their doggie related community events. Club Manager Bronwen Bell said "we receive so many appeals for help from charities and good causes that we were becoming overwhelmed with requests. Our Fairy Dog Mothers are volunteers, donating their time and expertise to assist the charities who need our help.” Whether it’s advertising your event, loaning equipment or just offering a helping hand, our Fairy Dog Mothers are just the wave of a wand away.

Every Christmas one lucky charity will be chosen to receive a significant donation from Santa Paws who delivers presents to the dogs Christmas party.

The Fairy Dog Mothers have wands at the ready waiting to grant your wishes. If you’re a canine charity who needs a helping hand and a sprinkling of Animal Magic, please get in touch.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

NHS Blood and Transplant collects blood across England and North Wales and plans sessions to ensure the right volumes of blood are collected, tested and delivered to meet the needs of patients.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. Whilst we can’t collect blood in every town and village there are regular opportunities for people to attend blood donor sessions across the region.

For more information or to book an appointment call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Older People from North Norfolk Area Come Together to Discuss the Challenges of Rural Living

Age UK North Norfolk is giving local older people the chance to share their experiences of rural living with local MP Norman Lamb.

The event is part of Age UK’s nationwide campaign, ‘Later life in rural England’, which aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities faced by older people living in rural England.

The event will be hosted by Age UK North Norfolk at Pinewood Park Leisure Centre, Holt Road, Upper Sheringham, Norfolk, NR26 8TU, on Friday 11 October starting at 10am.

Lyn Battrick, General Manager, Age UK North Norfolk said: ‘Living in the countryside holds many advantages for older people, including peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings and a strong sense of community. Yet while the ‘rural idyll’ holds true for some people, with poor transport links and large distances between towns and villages, living in a rural area can present unique challenges for older people. We want older people in North Norfolk to have their say on these issues and discuss solutions to these problems’.

Age UK’s campaign – ‘Later life in rural England’ – is calling for all levels of government to: • ‘rural proof’ policy and services that may have an impact on rural areas and make older people a priority in this process • take the ‘rural premium’ and social value of services into account • support community participation • target social isolation in rural areas

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

It is hard to believe we are now in the month of September, the weather is still good and we are still seeing plenty of holiday visitors at the White Horse and are pleased to see so many familiar faces from this time last year. We have just started our Autumn run of ‘Speciality Food Nights’, always popular they give my kitchen team a chance to offer a range of dishes that we might not normally cook and of course our customers even more food choices. Starting on the 18th September there will be a different them every Wednesday until we start our Christmas Menu’s in December. Already planned are the ever popular Seafood and Steak nights and along with Grill, Burger and Italian nights there are more themes still to be announced. Don’t forget that our Christmas and New Year Menus are freely available from the pub so if you are planning a Christmas party for workmates or with friends you should call in and get a copy, we are always happy to help with any special dietary requirements and for larger parties we are again this year offering a free disco.

This year seems to be a bumper year for apples os I have written my own recipe for Apple Pie always a favourite and so easy to make its an

ideal Autumn dessert which all the family can enjoy... Nathan Boon’s Recipe for Apple Tart

Peel, core and slice remaining apples.

Local MP Norman Lamb Attends Sheringham Play Park Revamp Campaign Fun Day

Local MP Norman Lamb recently attended a fun day for the Sheringham Play Park Revamp campaign. The campaign is run by a group of volunteers who are working together for the renovation of Sheringham’s main Play Park.

As well as providing a whole range of activities from bouncy castles to teddy tombola, the fun day also raised an impressive £890 which will contribute to the Play Park revamp.

Commenting, Mr Lamb said “I was delighted to attend the fun day organized by the Sheringham Play Park Revamp campaign. It was fantastic to see so many local people coming together to support this cause. The Play Park clearly plays a very important role in the Sheringham community. I fully support the efforts of the campaign to renovate the Play Park so that it can continue to be enjoyed by local people and visitors to the area.”

North Norfolk District Council awards funds to local community groups

Three local community groups are on course to benefit from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund in the first round since the Fund was re-launched in May 2013.

The Big Society Fund was set up by NNDC to help build strong communities in the district. The Fund aims to help communities to develop new and innovative projects which will improve their social and economic wellbeing.

The Big Society Grants Fund Panel awarded £5000 to Edgefield Village Hall Trust to support annexe repairs and refurbishment of the main hall area, including damp proofing, insulation and a new drainage system. The Trust is hopeful that their planned improvements will help reduce fuel costs long term, and will make better use of their facilities.

£1200 was awarded to local support agency Norfolk and Suffolk 4x4 Response to help buy Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for response members working in flood environments. The equipment will include flood suits, life jackets and helmets and will ensure that the group are suitably prepared to support multi-agency flood rescue efforts.

Sculthorpe Village Hall Management Committee was awarded £5000 to assist with an extension and refurbishment of the hall’s kitchen area, including the provision of a disabled ramp to benefit the many groups that currently use the facilities and with a view

to attracting many new ones.

Trevor Ivory, NNDC Cabinet Member for Localism and the Big Society, said, “I am really encouraged that many communities across North Norfolk have come forward with innovative projects seeking support from the fund.

“We are committed to making sure that the Council’s funds are used in the most effective way, so interested groups or organisations are invited to make an application that will be considered by the Panel. As a council we are delighted to support those that we are sure will improve our local communities and we look forward to excellent projects continuing to come forward.

“Last year the fund distributed almost £400,000 to 47 projects across the district. We have even greater resources this year, and with a pot of £450,000, we will help to ensure community projects succeed.”

NNDC continues to provide support to applicants that were not successful in the first round to help them develop projects that will become financially sustainable in the long-term and achieve their desired outcome.

If you have an idea or a project that you wish

to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local Councillor, get in touch with the Council via Sonia Shuter on 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@north-norfolk.gov.uk or visit www.northnorfolk.org/community/9687.asp

CCTV

North Norfolk residents will have been horrified to hear that the Conservative North Norfolk District Council is considering scrapping CCTV in our towns.

Although it is right that the council should review and consider whether CCTV can be run more efficiently with the right safeguards, turning the cameras off is not the solution.

C Ɣ joint, back, neck & muscle pain, stress, anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia, migraines and other recurrent headaches, tinnitus, ‘clicky jaw’; Ɣ colic, feeding & sleeping difficulties in b a bi e s ; Call for your free ‘Guide to Craniosacral Therapy’

I am keen to ensure North Norfolk continues to be an area where we have relative low crime and CCTV cameras act as a deterrent and keep residents, tourists and traders safe on our streets.

Doing away with CCTV will prove to be an unwelcome decision that will impact on the lives and safety of those living and working in North Norfolk.

Big generosity and smiles all round for Norfolk on Match Day Norfolk’s cancer charity Big C saw generosity by the bucketful on Norwich City match day.

Norwich City’s match at the and of last month was win-win for Norfolk. Not only did Norwich win their third match of the season, but the first charity collection of the season saw Norfolk’s cancer charity, Big C walk away with buckets filled with over £2,000 – all to be spent on supporting people in Norfolk with cancer as well as their friends their families.

Norwich City fans came from far and wide to help with the collection at the football ground on Saturday. There was a fantastic response to Big C’s call for help via Facebook and Twitter - it encouraged new and seasoned volunteers to help out on the day of Norwich’s home win.

So a win-win for Norfolk all round, plus the Big C team got to have their picture taken with the man of the match Leroy Fer.

If you need support with cancer, whether you’re a patient yourself or supporting a loved one, Big C can help. They have Support and Information Centres throughout Norfolk, with one at NNUH, one in Great Yarmouth town centre, support at the Louise Hamilton Centre at the James Paget Hospital and a Centre coming soon to King’s Lynn. Go to www.big-c.co.uk/support for more information or call 01603 619900.
