It’s Science, but not as we know it…

When pioneers in Science and Engineering such as Sir Christopher Cockerell, CBE who invented the Hovercraft and Sir James Dyson, CBE, inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner have walked the same corridors as many students from Gresham’s in Holt it is wonderful to see that Science and Engineering is still thriving at the School with many students still showing a keen interest in developing careers in these fields. Over the summer some Gresham’s students chose to spend some of their summer holidays attending courses to help further their knowledge in a variety of engineering fields hosted by The Smallpeice Trust.

The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes Engineering as a career primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 12 to 18. Clare Mawson, an Upper Sixth student at Gresham’s attended a Naval Architecture course at Plymouth University, she said “Gresham’s Physics department provided me with information about Engineering courses The Smallpeice Trust were running. It was a great experience as I found the Dock Yard tour fascinating and team design and build project on mini-submarines great fun. It made me all the more interested in pursuing a career in this area and I am now applying to study Naval Architecture at university.

course at The University of Manchester. The Smallpeice Trust, in collaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory provided an insight into some of the challenges facing nuclear industry today.

The course included a combination of Nick Twyman presentations, workshops, practical ‘design and make’ projects, and a final assessment which involved demonstrating their finished product, complete with design drawings, method statements and risk assessments. The design and make project challenged students to move spent nuclear fuel from a storage facility. It involved the students pitching their ideas in a “Dragon’s Den” type scenario in order to gain funding, allowing them to then go out and make their design.

Nick said, “Before going on the course I was nervous, as the only people who would possibly want to go on a “Nuclear Engineering” taster course, during their summer holidays, would be socially awkward “nerds”. This was not the case. I met many new people and had a lot of fun whilst learning a great deal about this field of work, which I had previously known very little about. The course consisted of one main engineering task and a variety of lectures. I highly recommend this and any other of The Smallpeice Trust courses as they really help to develop your knowledge in your area of interest.”

Gresham’s is also delighted to be entering the Student Robotics competition this year where students in the Sixth Form are tasked with designing, building and testing their own robots ready to compete against other teams. The School will this year be hosting the Eastern Region events with the kickstart opening event on October 12, with a number of local schools across Norfolk already signed up to take part.

Lots to bid for at Charity Auction

From tickets to the Cromer Pier Christmas Show to a cricket bat signed by the English cricket captain and the Essex team to a signed first edition of the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ from J K Rowling, the White Horse Charity Auction in Overstrand on Saturday 12 October in aid of Nelson’s Journey is sure to attract a great deal of interest.

The cricket bat, donated and signed by England cricket captain Alastair Cook and the rest of the Essex Cricket Team, has already created quite a bit of interest and is sure to by one of the star lots. Also attracting interest is the book ‘The Casual Vacancy’ written by JK Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. As a signed first edition it will perhaps in the future realise a considerable return. The Charity Auction on 12 October is accompanied by a 3-course pre auction dinner with £5 from every ticket being donated to the charity. Tickets cost £35 per person and are on sale now at the White Horse. Strictly limited to 85 people guests will be treated to pre dinner drinks and canapés upon arrival at 7pm with the dinner commencing at 7.30pm before the auction at 9pm. Brewers Greene King who are supporting the event have already donated a keg of their IPA with a free pint being offer to all those attending the auction. They have also agreed to sponsor the event, which will allow the White Horse to advertise the event to an even wider audience. Still to be announced by Greene King are the other lots that they will be donating to the auction. Greene King Sales Development Manager Andrew Galpin said “We are delighted to have been asked to support this great event and to help raise money for such an important charity. We wish the White Horse and everyone involved the very best of luck and hope that it will raise ‘lots’ of money”. Amongst the other lots already promised are tickets to a meeting at Fakenham Race Course, a food hamper, tickets for two to Newmarket races with access to the owners ring, a framed Norwich City shirt signed by the team and a year’s swimming pass from Woodlands Leisure.

Special Olympics Norfolk holds taster day at UEA TASTER DAY FOR BUDDING ATHLETES...

Budding athletes, cricketers and golfers, aged 16 or over, with learning disabilities from across Norfolk are amongst those being invited to take part in a sports taster day at Norwich’s UEA campus on Friday 11 October.

Organised by Special Olympics Norfolk, the day will showcase athletics, cricket, golf, tennis and boccia (a variation on bowls) with specialist coaches and volunteers on hand to organise mini competitions, provide training and support for all those interested.

In addition coaches and officials from Special Olympics Norfolk’s skiing, gymnastics and swimming sections will be present to provide information about the range of regional, national and global competitions delivered by the Special Olympics movement.

Richard Sanders, chairman of Special Olympics Norfolk, explained: “The taster day represents a welcoming and sociable introduction to sport for adults at the superb sporting facilities offered by the UEA campus.

“We hope as many adults as possible with special needs, aged 16 and above, will take up this fantastic opportunity to try out new sports, have a lot of fun and find out what Special Olympics is about and up to across the county.

“Although this event is aimed at adults over the age of 16, Special Olympics Norfolk is also hoping to hear from families of learning disabled children for whom we can arrange training from the age of 6 and competition in sport and athletics from the age of 8.

“We already have almost 100 people of all ages from every corner of Norfolk taking part in sporting events and competing regionally and nationally and, in some instances, on the international stage for Great Britain around the world.

“Special Olympics Norfolk recently had four gymnasts and a tennis player compete very successfully for the Eastern region at the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Bath at the start of September. They returned with a stunning haul of 24 medals between them!” added Richard.

The Group will be primarily aimed at younger adults with physical disabilities aged between 18 and 35. Activities will be decided by the members using the group. It has been acknowledged that there are limited social opportunities for younger adults with disabilities in the North Walsham area.

If this interests you, a meeting is being held to discuss ideas around setting up such a group and the type of activities people might like to do. The level of response will enable us to gauge the level of interest and decide how and if to move forward with the idea.

1917 Cromer lifeboat rescue to feature in RNLI’s national WW1 exhibition

The Cromer RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea on 9 January 1917, is to feature in an RNLI national touring exhibition commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The charity’s exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, is called Hope in the Great War, and will honour the courage and bravery of the lifeboat crew who risked their lives to save others during WW1.

Cromer’s lifesaving story of 40 men launching the lifeboat, the formation of a human lifesaving chain and a second launch of the

lifeboat in worsening conditions is locally renowned, and will now feature in the exhibition alongside five other RNLI lifeboat services that took place in communities across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Opening in February 2014 at the Henry Blogg Museum in Norfolk, Hope in the Great War will start a 4 year tour around RNLI museums, lifeboat stations and other museums.

Now the RNLI is asking the local community in Cromer for family memories, photographs and artefacts connected to the RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo. The most relevant items may be selected to feature within the exhibition allowing the fullest story of the rescue to be told nationally.

Becky Fletcher, RNLI Heritage Project Co-ordinator explains ‘The outstanding efforts by Cromer’s RNLI volunteers to save lives in WW1 will now be given a national voice.

Although many details are already known about the Pyrin and Fernebo rescues, finding personal memories and connections would undoubtedly be of further inspiration.

‘We’re involving the community in other ways too – locally, the RNLI is teaming up with members of the 1st Cromer Sea Scouts to create a piece of artwork for the tour. They are creating a stained glass interactive game which will feature within the exhibition.’

for us is a very proud moment in Cromer’s history. We feel immensely privileged to be involved in such an important project and by helping to share the Cromer rescue with the rest of the nation. Our Scouts, Cubs and Beavers are fascinated with the story of the rescue, particularly when comparing technology in our modern times and the lack of technology and kit they had nearly 100 years ago, but the RNLI volunteers still managed to save lives because of the crew’s sheer bravery.

‘We are thrilled with the youngsters’ enthusiasm for this project and we are sure it is something they will never forget. Hopefully they will continue to share the story and experience of this project with their children in years to come.’

Stylish New Look for Sheringham Little Theatre

Visitors to the Sheringham Little Theatre will soon discover the coastal venue has been given a completely new box office and café area. Work is currently underway to refurbish the foyer and visitor areas of the popular theatre, with a grand opening planned for Saturday, 30 November.

Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre, said the refurbishment would make access to the box office and café much easier and would allow more people to enjoy the space.

“We were very lucky to receive a grant of £66,000 from the Norfolk County Council Community Construction Fund to improve the box office and café bar. This will see us move the box office and make it far more open and welcoming,” she said.

“At the same time we are moving the bar into the centre of the café, improving the flow for customers and to make it more efficient in terms of how the food is served.”

The refurbishment will allow up to 62 people to be seated and will create more cohesion between the theatre itself and the interval area.

It is the second phase of a major renovation programme at the Little Theatre. The first stage saw the refurbishment of the exterior of the building while the third phase – expected to take place in 2014 – will see the creation of a new education and youth space.

“We are really looking forward to the new look café and box office,” she said. “Not only will the changes enhance the whole experience for theatre-goers but they will also be of great benefit to our fantastic army of volunteers who run the café for us.

“We will be holding a grand opening from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 30 November and hope members of the public will come along to see the new areas for themselves and to meet members of our pantomime cast.”

90 years old this September!

The WEA Sheringham Branch, which provides lecture series and day schools, is celebrating ninety years of adult education organised by volunteers in Sheringham this year.

Founded as the 'Sheringham Lecture Society' in the Autumn of 1923, the Rev. J Ingram Bryan,Ph.D. (Penn.) held the first series of evening lectures on 'The Philosophy of English Literature'. Cambridge University had created the Board of Extra-Mural Studies in that year and Sheringham was one of the only two rural 'outposts' it created. The fast train service connecting Sheringham to London via Cambridge meant that the lecturers could travel easily between the University and the Lecture Society.

The popularity of the lectures continued, with courses provided between September and March every year including during World War Two when the local population was augmented by the military personnel stationed locally. Homework essays and end of course exams became a thing of the past but the Lecture Society's contacts with Cambridge continued until 1991 when the University of East Anglia took over. Then, however, education cuts in 1995 meant the association with the universities came to an end and the Sheringham Lecture Society became a branch the Workers Educational Association which had been providing adult education throughout the country for many years.

New Actors at Sheringham Little Theatre

Two new actors are in the latest production from the award winning Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society. Matt Scantlebury, who lives in Upper Sheringham and Glen Hall who lives in Brisley, near Fakenham, are both looking forward to being part of the hilarious comedy. Neither actor has acted at the Sheringham Little Theatre before and they are enthusiastic about performing at such a popular venue.

Set in the 70s, the play is classic Russell - working class family life with all the joys and sorrows that come with it. At its heart lies the story of two sisters’ rivalry expressed through a battle of household purchases - Betty has a new sofa, but Reeny’s just had central heating put in!

Throw into the mix a daughter’s pregnancy, a slightly troubled adolescent and a bizarre moment with a ‘personal intimate massager’ and you have all the ingredients for an hilarious, but very poignant, story.

Oh, and it’s set at Christmas, and we all know how that is always a perfect recipe for peace and harmony…

Sheringham Playpark Revamp Fun Day Success

We had a very successful second Fun Day - the sun shone, we had a good crowd and got some great feedback afterwards to say that people had enjoyed the day. We raised a little over £890 which is fantastic!

Wizzy and the emergency services who gave up their time free of charge and to members of Sheringham Carnival Committee who loaned us equipment and helped us out on the day. Also a huge thank you to everyone who turned up on the day to volunteer their help and obviously all those who came to show their support.

There were bouncy castles, a teddy tombola, face painting, Dizzy Wizzy Children's entertainer who provided an outside disco and circus equipment for everyone to try - Minnie Mouse made an appearance too!

We also had a raffle and some games, as well as selling books, cakes and refreshments. The emergency services also joined us, we had the paramedics, police and the fire service. Even Stormy Stan from the RNLI was there!

Our fund total is now over £13,000! Our next event is our Kids' Halloween Party on Sunday 27 October 2pm - 4pm at the new Community Centre.

A Bridge-building Exercise

Another successful crossing has just been completed by the Beeston Common Management Group (BCMG). Volunteer members, Edward and Francis Farrow have just replaced an aging two-plank bridge with a four-sleeper width bridge over a muddy stream on the Common.

The extra width will allow the path mower to cross as well as increase the overall safety of the crossing and with its new wire-netting surface slipping should be prevented, as demonstrated by Bonnie (in the photograph), who tested the new bridge on its completion, Sunday 22 September.

The five re-cycled ex-railway sleepers, which make up the bridge were the final instalment of new-build and as required replacement bridges that were proposed as part of the ‘Sheringham Trails’, a 2007 regeneration project, which linked coastal and inland paths into a six-mile scenic circular walk, taking in the cliffs, commons, woods, country lanes and Sheringham Park.

70th Wedding Anniversary Celebrations for Tony and Joyce Morris

On Monday 16 September Tony and Joyce Morris celebrated their 70th (platinum) wedding anniversary at the Royal British Legion, Halsey House, in Cromer.

Earlier at the weekend they took their family out for a special lunch at the Pepper Pot in West Runton and then back to Halsey House for a glass of pink champagne and cake and to open their cards, including one from the Queen.

The past three months turned out as forecast giving us a warm and generally sunny summer.

During their 70 years of marriage a lot has changed. They got married during the war in Southend at 8.30am in the morning, as Tony was only able to take a few days leave from the Royal Navy. All their family and friends pooled their rations to create a wedding breakfast and cake. Then they went by train for a brief honeymoon in a cottage near Torquay which had been lent to them by a friend.

Luckily the sea breezes were kept to a minimum, July to September made up for the cold between January and most of June, the culprit for the cold being a long run of winds out of the north. It is worth noting that we have not been in a warming trend for 15 years and for this reason 'global warming' has morphed into 'climate change'. Thousands thronged Sheringham during 40s weekend last month Dear Margaret,

Last weekend will long remain in my memory. For me it started with the opening of the new Lighthouse Community Church. Worthy of an innovative design award for local architects SMG. So many hundreds turned up a visiting fire officer would have had an apoplexy. A triumphant start to an exciting new community project.

I continued fighting my way through vast crowds on to the old station to present prizes for the best presented 1940s businesses and staff organised by the Chamber of Trade who have encouraged 90% of our local businesses to take part. The Sheringham 1940s weekend was going full swing. The North Norfolk Railway ferried thousands to attractions up and down the line. Despite months of meticulous planning by Trevor Eady and Chrissie Rayment, overwhelmed by the numbers this year, they ran out of platform tickets.

The military vehicle parade and the Nottingham Youth Big Band kept the 1940s swinging late into

Saturday evening. Not being the tallest in the crowd it was only when I stood on the plinth to make my speech, just prior to the Sunday afternoon final marching parade, did I realise that it was not a few hundred people gathered but a few thousand. In every direction there were densely packed people as far as the eye could see, an amazing sight. Hundreds took part in the parade organised by Graham Deans, which respectfully ended the weekend with a minutes silence at Otterndorf Green.

As I write this letter hundreds of our volunteers will be waking on Monday morning feeling exhausted but elated that their efforts produced such a wonderful weekend. I cannot remember seeing quite so many happy, laughing, joking, smiley

people all in one place in late September. Sheringham wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just filled with vast crowds and warm sunshine, over those two days; it was filled with well deserved pride. Yours sincerely, Doug Smith, Mayor of Sheringham

It’s ‘hats in the air’ and ‘three cheers’ to everyone who made North Norfolk Railway’s 1940s weekend a resounding success at the Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt stations.

The official 40s programme heading under the National Crown stated ‘your courage, your cheerfulness, you resolution, will bring us victory’. It certainly did then and history has been repeated 70 years on!

The sun shone and crowds arrived in their thousands, decked in wartime uniforms and a magnificent array of 40s fashions.

More support than ever from the town of Sheringham and its retail businesses was so evident this year. After the Sunday parade through the town, (courtesy of the efforts of Graham Deans – Lobster public house landlord) a fitting flag lowering ceremony was held on The Green by Sheringham station.

North Norfolk Railway’s General Manager, Trevor Eady, incorrectly addressed as Managing Director, caused laughter from the crowd when he said ‘I didn’t expect managerial promotion this afternoon – I can only put it down to the success of this year’s 40s weekend!’.

He then thanked everyone for their magnificent support, stating that the event had grown steadily in popularity over the years.

A perfect rendition of ‘The Last Post’ was performed by the Salvation Army Bandmaster, Paul Winterbourne, bringing the curtain down on a truly momentous weekend for Sheringham.

Yes, we are proud to be British, and even prouder to be long-standing Sheringham residents.

Long may this wonderful nostalgic event continue, please accept our hearty congratulations.

I am sure I am among many locals and visitors who would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone on the North Norfolk Railway, both staff and volunteers, for a fantastic 40s weekend. I know there is a tremendous amount of planning and organisation involved and this all came together to provide the best 40s weekend so far. It has been getting bigger and better every year and the weather made it just perfect. The parade and closing ceremony on the Sunday was a great way to finish such an event, giving everyone the chance to remember those times and all those that lost their lives during the war. It was good to see how many local businesses took part this year with some brilliant window displays and many staff dressing up in 40s clothes. I was among many locals who also dressed in 40s clothes and, together with the re-enactors, it all added to the atmosphere of the weekend. Once again THANK YOU Sue Bourne, Sheringham

Sheringham/Muzillac Twinning Visit Deserves Five Stars

In August 22 members of the Sheringham/Muzillac Twinning Association travelled to Muzillac in Brittany. The journey by coach and train was organised by Stuart Meakin in his usual quiet, efficient manner. Careful pairing of hosts and guests, as well as a balanced programme, ensured it was a great success and, according to the Chairman, Hugh Bradbury, was the best of all five visits so far. Doug Smith, Mayor of Sheringham, was presented with a Muzillac town medal and books on the local area by their Mayor, Jo Brohan. The programme included visits to The Resistance Museum at Saint Marcel, the fascinating collection at Lizio of working models made from scrap metal which were powered by solar and wind power. All these were created by a poet who "Doesn't ask for the moon, only a few stars". A day trip to Quimper included a 'tasting' at a biscuit factory. A visit to a local oyster farm challenged the chairman's French when acting as interpreter! Evening entertainment included a 'bring and share', a pancake evening and plenty of singing and dancing. We are now planning the return visit to Sheringham next summer.

COAST 2013 - “Inspired by Film” Cromer & Sheringham Art and Literary Festival returns for the fourth year with over 50 events and exhibitions running from Friday 25 October to Sunday 3 November, half term week.

Brochures are available throughout the town listing over 50 events and exhibitions throughout Cromer and Sheringham, including writers, Bollywood dancers, crafts, African drummers, painters, film producers, glass makers, poets, musicians, actors, and youth drama workshops.

“Inspired By Film” is the theme, so there will be screenings of Coast related films from around the world. THE INTERNATIONAL STAFF SONGSTERS

In their 33-year history the International Staff Songsters have established choral boundaries of excellence for The Salvation Army worldwide. Founded in 1980 on the instruction of The Salvation Army’s international leader General Arnold Brown and under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel Norman Bearcroft, the ISS have acquired an impressive list of credits to their name. Over 25 recordings, radio and television appearances and many miles of travel both in the UK and abroad are indicative of a vigorous and continuous ministry.

Under their successive leaders - Captain Len Ballantine, Major Peter Ayling and Andrew Blyth - their musical horizons have continued to evolve. Their current Leader, Dorothy Nancekievill, who was appointed in October 2003, has brought to the group her own personality and passion for sharing Christian music. The sheer range of music offered by the group has become their hallmark. Concerts include a menu for any appetite from classics to contemporary.

Membership includes singers from a cross-section of educational, professional and commercial concerns, most of whom live within a 2½-hour drive of London. Weekly rehearsals in London and monthly journeys to the four corners of the UK to conduct Sunday worship services, visit hospitals and residential homes and give musical festivals, all demand a high degree of personal commitment from the songsters. Although a practical audition is mandatory for membership, the role of the Staff Songsters is not simply musical. The highest standards of Christian faith and living are required.

This helps to ensure that the group’s communication runs deeper than the music itself, sharing the message of God’s love with their listeners. Internationally the Staff Songsters have undertaken several overseas campaigns in such countries as Canada and Newfoundland, Norway and Sweden, the USA, France, The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand, and they have also undertaken a ground-breaking tour of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.

2007 saw the songsters visit Finland, Estonia and Sweden during a tour over the Easter period; most recently the songsters visited The Netherlands early in 2010. In 2012, the ISS made its first visit to the South American continent, with a tour of the South America East Territory, followed by participation in the annual Old Orchard Beach meetings, near Boston, USA, as guests of the USA Eastern Territory. The group believe that the Holy Spirit himself is at work in this and will continue to minister in homes around the world where their recordings reinforce that timeless theme. Bodham Big Weekend which took place in July, saw over a 1,000 people entertained over the three day event which played host to an array of events for all the family including Rock Bodham.

At Bodham Big Weekend’s recent AGM the committee decided to donate £750 apiece to the East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) and The East Anglian Air Ambulance with Bodham Church, Village Hall and Playing field each receiving £500. Holt Community First Responders, who this year provided a defibrillator for the village, will also receive £500. A further £1000 will be spent on a Christmas Dinner for Bodham's over 70s and

a Christmas Party for the village’s children. Speaking after the meeting, new chairman John Paul Ringer expressed his delight that they are able to give away a record amount this year, and paid tribute to outgoing committee members, in particular outgoing Chairman Peter Bedell and Treasurer Anne Green. In the absence of our Chairman on holiday, Vice Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 17 members and our guest speaker, Francis Farrow, to lunch at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on Thursday 19 September.

Francis is professionally a marine geophysicist but his hobby is the study of butterflies. His fascinating talk was entitled “Beeston Butterflies” and covered the remarkable range of butterfly species found on Beeston Common in Sheringham. The Common was designated a “Site of Special Scientific Interest” (SSSI) in 1968, and more recently in 2005, a “Special Area of Conservation” (SAC). It features a number of habitats, such as heath, bog and fen, grassland and secondary woodland, a combination particularly suitable for butterfly life, and some 33 species of butterfly have been recorded there. Francis has personally seen most of these, and he noted that only three more resident species have been recorded in the whole of Norfolk.

His excellent slide show followed the seasons through early spring and summer to show the very wide variety of habitats and plant species favoured by each of over 30 butterfly species. He commented on the changes which have been observed in the species populations, some of

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ‘GARDENERS’ WORLD STORY COMES TO SHERINGHAM’

There have been many presenters of BBC ‘s Gardeners’ World since it was first broadcast in 1968 but surely the best loved was the shows longest –serving presenter , Geoff Hamilton, who was associated with the programme from 1979 until his death in 1996 when he suffered a heart attack on a charity bike ride.

Geoff Hamilton’s son Nick Hamilton His practical hands-on experience, down-toearth approach to gardening, his desire to share his failures as well as his successes with the audience, combined with a gentle humour were some of the keys to his success and popularity. He was a committed and informed early

advocate of the organic approach to gardening, helping to dispel the rather widely held belief that organic gardening was slightly odd and cranky.

In 1985 Geoff was responsible for moving the show’s venue to his own garden at Barnsdale in Rutland. This garden, now consisting of 38 themed gardens over 8 acres remains open to the public and is run by his son Nick. Fears Royal Mail privatisation will harm North Norfolk's postal service

It has been announced that the government is pressing with plans to sell-off Royal Mail in the coming weeks, despite widespread opposition from North Norfolk residents.

North Norfolk Labour Party has been campaigning against the sale of another "national treasure" through street stalls across the constituency over the past few months. Nearly 2,000 people have opposed the plans, and residents have been particularly concerned about the effects privatisation may have on local communities.

It is expected that the company will be floated on the stock exchange shortly.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "The people of North Norfolk, much like the rest of the country, have serious concerns about what the government is doing with Royal Mail. This is a company that does make a profit - it makes a huge profit and so there is no reason why they should want to sell it off other than for the sake political ideology.

We are developing our services and want to recruit a team of volunteer complementary therapists who would be willing to provide a service to our patients living locally. This would enable those people, who find travelling difficult, to benefit from our service wherever they live. There is no minimum amount of hours required; support and supervision will be provided.

Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to help raise money for the much needed Cromer Skate Park when he completes a Skydive!!

Having spent many years coaching Youth Football, Phil is very keen on seeing both boys and girls of all ages and abilities follow their passions and desires and pursue their hobbies in the best surroundings with the best facilities and most of all with friends and other like-minded people.

"Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it," says Phil, "we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days. They canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy their favourite pastime without getting some stick from someone. This Skate Park is a must not just for the guys who want to use it, but Cromer as well â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it will create a great place for people to meet, and to practise their sport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create another great â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;drawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for the town â&#x20AC;&#x201C; look at the success of the Mundesley and Sheringham Parks."

Phil and wife Kay meet a lot of the guys in the shop as they look at the latest gear, and have got to know many of them well. "They are great kids, polite, well behaved and well-spoken, but above all show real passion for their sport," enthused Kay.

CONFIT OF DUCK WITH DAUPHINOISE POTATO AND SWEET BEETROOT JUS

► In a hot pan, sear the ducklegs in unsalted butter until golden brown. Place into an oven dish and season well with Maldon sea salt, thyme and garlic and a couple of bay leaves.

► Half-cover the legs with duck fat and cover with baking parchment and foil.

► Cook in the oven for five to six hours (depending on the size or the legs) on gas mark three. The meat needs to be soft but not falling off the bone.

► Extract from the oil and leave to rest. Tub the duck fat and when cool place in the fridge to use next time.

DAUPHINOISE POTATOES

► Pre-heat oven to gas mark three. Make sure your oven dish is evenly coated with butter.

► Peel five large potatoes – we get ours direct from the garden – thinly slice with a sharp knife or mandolin.

► Mix up 500ml of double cream, a couple of pinches of nutmeg, a good amount of seasoning and two crushed garlic cloves.

► Toss the potatoes in your cream mix, place everything into your gratin dish – layering the slices of potato – and bake for approximately an hour to 90 minutes, pressing down with a wooden spoon every 15 minutes.

► The potatoes will come out lovely and golden brown; leave to stand for at least ten minutes.

SIMPLE GARDEN BEETROOT JUS

► Boil your beetroots for two to threee hours and, while hot, peel them – wear rubber gloves of course! Dice up with a shallot, a mediumsized red onion and a knob of unsalted butter.

► Cook on a medium heat until soft, then add 50ml of red wine, a dash of white wine vinegar, Maldon sea salt and black pepper and 75ml of chicken stock.

► Remove from the heat, puree with a stick blender until smooth, return to the heat for 10 minutes and finish with a pinch of caster sugar to give some sweet balance to the acidity.

FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway! Throughout the half term holiday, 26th October to 3rd November 2013, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station. To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.

Sing (and giggle a bit) with Cantamus Community Choir

Would you like to sing the magnificent coronation anthem ‘Zadok The Priest’?

Composed by George Frideric Handel for the coronation of George II in 1727, this rousing piece has been sung at every subsequent British coronation, including the anointing of Queen Elizabeth II, and will be sung by Cantamus Community Choir at their coming October concert together with works by Haydn and Elgar.

Cantamus predominantly sing traditional and choral music. We are a very friendly choir, prone to the odd fit of giggles, so if you would like the challenge of singing choral music please join us.

We rehearse every Thursday at 7.30pm in St James Church, Southrepps, NR11 8NR. No audition or experience is required and don’t be put off if you have little or no experience of reading music. All you need is a desire to have fun, sing and add to Cantamus’ strong community spirit. Our members come from Sheringham, Happisburgh, Banningham, North Walsham, and towns / villages in between. Dear Margaret,

Having recently moved to Sheringham from Filby to help support our daughter, both my wife and I have found the area and its facilities very attractive.

I read an article in the local press regarding The Red Lion public house that used to trade in Upper Sheringham. I have spoken to a few local residents who assured me that it was a great ‘local pub’.

According to the article quite a few prospective landlords were interested in running this pub. Do your readers think it would be possible to start some type of petition or action group to ‘bring back The Red Lion’? Yours sincerely, J E Cox

Stitch Together

Stitch Together is a patchwork and quilting group which was formed in 2010 & until recently met in Holt but has now re-located to the New Community Centre in Sheringham. This year members made a group quilt entitled 'Our Norfolk' and entered it into the groups section of the competition at the Great Northern Quilt Show in Harrogate held from 30 August to 1 September.

The group were delighted to receive a 'Judges Merit' rosette for their quilt (technically 3rd place in the group section)

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Little did I realise when I wrote last time that we would have a perfect example of what happens if someone does not update their cat’s micro chip records when they move and the cat in question would be one that we had re-homed. We received a call from the vets when a little cat was brought in by a concerned member of the public as they have no near neighbours and it was apparent that it was a stray. As the cat was micro chipped they were able to establish that it had been in our care and, knowing that the owners no longer lived at the address on the records, contacted us to see if had been reported lost or whether we had any other contact details. Unfortunately, we were unable to help but are obviously concerned for the cat’s future welfare as the person who is caring for him at present does not want another cat. The vets have now been able to establish the area where the people have moved to and with co-operation from the cat owner’s own vet are trying to make contact with them. As the little cat is half way from the area where his owners now live and his old home we believe he was probably trying to make his way back there. We are hoping his owner can be found and he can be re-united with them, otherwise he may come back into our care.

Help Children in Zambia's "Building a Future" Project October 2014

Many of the street children of Lusaka, Zambia have been very ‘damaged‘ by their experiences - they need professional help. That help can be freely obtained from worldwide volunteers. We are hoping to build a house that will accommodate up to six volunteer doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals! We have a team of builders from North Norfolk who are donating their costs, time and skills to go and build it in October 2014! How great is that! They are also passing on their skills and tools to the older children, empowering them to earn a livelihood for themselves and future generations. We need to now raise £25,000 for the building materials. Please come along on 12 October to help us.

At this time of the year the vast majority of those re-homed are kittens although we have also seen several of the lovely young mums leave our care too. Some have been in dire need of some tender loving care when they join us and it is remarkable how quickly they respond when they receive it. Because they all receive a check at the vets before they go With all her kittens now to new homes we can also identify any in loving homes Bijou problems and this has been the situation with (not much bigger than two little kittens recently. One little kitten had her kittens) is now looking a hernia which will be repaired when he is for some to love her too neutered but the other has a serious heart murmur. Kittens do often have heart murmurs when they go for their first vaccination and these have usually disappeared by the time they have the second. This will not be the case in this instance however. Both kittens have been lucky to find new homes with understanding owners, the little girl with the heart murmur having been given a home with veterinary nurses who understand the significance of the situation and how this could affect her.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb challenges Vodafone Chief Exec over signal failures

Norman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of Vodafone, Guy Lawrence, to challenge Vodafone over its continued signal problems on the North Norfolk Coast. The local MP was made aware of the problems after two constituents contacted him to say they had been without signal for three days.

In his letter, Norman Lamb commented that “For there to have been yet another significant loss of service for Vodafone customers after the disruption that has already occurred recently is incredibly frustrating for customers. I also do not think it is acceptable. I would be grateful in the first instance if you could confirm what steps are being taken to rectify the problem as a matter of urgency. I would also be grateful if you could arrange for a senior representative of Vodafone UK to meet with me in North Norfolk to discuss steps that can be taken to improve the resilience of your network to ensure that this does not happen again”.

Norman Lamb met with representatives of the Countryside Alliance, who are running a “Sick of No Signal” campaign in rural areas to urge networks to improve their signal in the countryside.

65 extra frontline staff for north Norfolk's ambulance service

'Act on Ambulances' campaigners have welcomed the promise of 65 extra front-line staff here after the ambulance trust pledged to treat north Norfolk as a priority area.

The campaign, started by North Norfolk Labour Party, was launched after concerns about response times in the area over a year ago.

Throughout the campaign Act on Ambulances campaigners have kept the pressure on both the previous and interim chief executives pointing out to them the ambulance trust's failures and highlighting the stories they have heard on the ground.

The concerns about response times from both residents and campaigners were confirmed in the Anthony Marsh report earlier this year.

Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, has welcomed the news stating: "We hope the Trust will now deliver on this promise so that those living in north Norfolk can finally regain confidence in the ambulance service.
