SHERINGHAM IN BLOOM
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
St Andrews hosted the presentation of awards for 2013 Sheringham in Bloom, which are divided into two categories, judging done by the Sheringham Horticultural society, the rest by a random selection of Sheringham people.
The Residential gardens category is judged for us by SHS who have a great system for covering the whole town with their front garden competition and very kindly include our categories in their judging as well. Thank you to the SHS committee and all the members who take the time to get involved with this. And particularly to their Chairman Paddy Corden who will be presenting prizes for both the SHS and Sheringham in Bloom categories.

AuTuMn COLOuRS I walk along a woodland path, Scuffing leaves this way and that, Watched warily by a ginger cat. Leaves spiral from the trees, Helped by a gentle breeze. The autumn colours are a delight On this glorious day, I see beauty all around me, It carries me away
Diane Berthelot
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
The lunch meeting on 2 October was held, as usual, at the Links Hotel in West Runton. The Chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed Mike Osborne to the club as a new member, having previously attended twice as a visitor. Dave also confirmed that a speaker has now been arranged for next April, so the programme for the year ending next June is all in place.
There was a change to the advertised speaker as the warden booked had left Pensthorpe. Another warden, Darren Williams was drafted in as a result. It was his first formal presentation but it did not show and the audience were impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm.
Darren encouraged us all to visit Pensthorpe gardens, especially if we had not been before. He particularly recommended the Land Rover tours which he usually conducts!
In November we will have the benefit of two speakers coming to give a joint presentation about The Mardler talking newspaper. Jack Chapman is the Listeners’ Liaison Officer and Jolyon Booth is the Chief Recordist at The Mardler. They will describe the service they provide to blind and visually impaired people in North Norfolk and Broadland as well as the people and processes required to deliver it.
Recent new members have found us welcoming so, if you are interested, contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information and to arrange to attend one of our monthly meetings. There is no obligation to join immediately - come and give it a try, then decide if you wish to attend regularly.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER COLCHICUMS
powerful plants, since all parts yield the drug colchicine, a cure for gout.
Most of the colchicums flower without any leaves. These follow later and persist until early summer. Remember if you are planting them that the foliage takes up more room than the flowers and is very untidy.
Among the most spectacular autumn garden flowers are the Colchicums, also known as Autumn Crocus or Naked Ladies (and in Norfolk ‘Strip-Jack- Naked!). The name comes from Colchis (an ancient kingdom – and home of all sorcery – set between the Caucasus to the north and Armenia to the south) where the first plants are said to have sprung from drops of the potion brewed by the enchantress Medea, daughter of the king of Colchis, to restore youth to the ageing Aeson. They are certainly
The bulbs are still available as I write but they are not convenient things for bulb sellers to deal with as they are in active growth –first the flowers and then the leaves – over a long period. Colchicums generally like deep, fertile soil that is well drained but does not dry out completely. Though they will put up with some shade, they flower most freely in an open site in full sun. Deer, rabbits and mice seem to leave them alone but you need to guard against slugs. After three or four years you may need to lift and split overcrowded clumps.
Colchicums are sometimes recommended for growing indoors; just set on a saucer with no soil or water. They will flower, because in the wild they are used to hot, dry summers and only produce roots after Our first talk after the summer break was given by Stephen Cooper, son flowering, when the of our social secretary, Maureen.
Sheringham Coffee Mornings
He told us about his work with the Forestry Commission, about his work in managing the various woods in his area and how wood is now being used for various fuels. Much of our native woodland has been neglected over the years and is only now being properly managed, coppiced and thinned. Wood pellets are used by many factories and schools for heating purposes and the amount of log-burning stoves which use seasoned logs is increasing, particularly by those trying to be ‘green’. It was a fascinating talk and we learned a lot about our native woodland.
Our next talk on Thursday, 31 October, when our speaker will be Robert Smith, the Wells Harbour Master, who will be telling us all about his work.
The talk will be held, as usual, in St. Joseph's Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham and the time is 10.15am for 10.30am. Admission is £3 to include tea and/or coffee and homemade cakes.
Everyone is welcome and there is plenty of free parking at the church

autumn rains begin. However you must plant them outside immediately after flowering to build up the corm for future years.
There are many varieties but ‘Rosy Dawn’ and ‘Waterlily’ are very hardy and widely available.
Apart from planting colchicums there are plenty of other jobs that need doing to prepare for winter including: • Bring tender plants under cover before the first frosts • Plant spring bedding such as wallflowers and polyanthus • Batten down the hatches ensuring that nothing can blow about and cause damage on windy nights • Plant tulips and hyacinths • Clear up fallen leaves and compost them • Tidy perennials, removing dead stems but leaving seed heads for birds to eat • Rake fallen leaves from the lawn and then scarify, aerate and top dress the grass • Clear debris, weeds and excess oxygenating plants from the pond but leave them on the side for 36 hours to allow wildlife the chance to return to the water • Indoors, stand houseplants on trays of gravel to counteract the drop in humidity when the central heating comes on. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We are still trying to make contact with the owners of the young cat mentioned last time and, with help from the vets, will continue to do so. We are also still trying to catch the last cat from the feral colony but another kitten, Buckaroo, has been found and is now in our care.
There are many reasons for cats and kittens needing to come into care and we do have to give some special priority because their need is greater. A recent instance of this concerns four cats from a house where the marriage had broken down. Two of the cats had more or less been abandoned and were to be found outside the local store begging for food. Both of these cats had serious flea infestations with scabs in their coats and were underweight. Two of our fosterers live in Briston, the village concerned, and they and two local catteries were being contacted on a daily basis for something to be done. Fortunately, some other cats due to arrive at Hemsby at the beginning of the week went elsewhere so we had space available for the abandoned cats. Contact was therefore made with the owner to get him to sign all four cats over to us, which he was only

too happy to do. Our lives are often juggling acts and we could not take them in until we had space to hold them for a short time before transporting them from Briston to Hemsby. Andie, Amos, Remy and Riley are now making good progress, putting on weight and free from fleas.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Our nurse clinics are designed with you and your pets in mind. Whether you are thinking of getting a pet and are not sure what breed to choose, or you want some help and advice with an existing pet, our nurses are here to help for FREE!
Nurse clinics are run daily at our Sheringham and Cromer surgeries, booking is essential as these clinics do get busy, for Sheringham call 01263 822293 or for Cromer call 01263 513976.
CLINIC TYPES
• New pet – advice prior to choosing your new pet from breed type, approximate cost and training. • One to one puppy and kitten clinics – monthly appointments to monitor the progress of your pet and discuss any issues you may have along the way. • Monthly weigh and worm clinics – for puppies, kittens and older pets, bring them along and let the nurses take the stress out of getting that tablet down! • Weight clinics – got a portly pet? Come along for an assessment – we promise not to tell you off! Our nurses are trained to assess body condition and manage weight loss at a healthy level. With monthly appointments we are able to monitor progress and adjust the plan accordingly making our plans individually tailored to your pets specific needs. • Dental checks - a 6 monthly invitation to get your pets mouth assessed, our nurses are trained to spot signs of gum disease or other common problems – imagine if you didn’t clean your teeth every day – we are here to help prevent problems occurring . • Senior clinics – a hugely popular clinic targeting the older pets as they enter their twilight years. Covering topics such as free blood pressure testing and blood analysis for kidney or liver problems at a reduced cost, this thorough clinic can help rule potential problems out or offer fast treatment to anything detected (Please note – nurses are unable to diagnose conditions by law and referral may be required to the vet – this will be at a reduced cost if booked through the senior clinic). • Suture removal and post-operative assessments – after surgery animals need to be monitored to make sure healing is progressing and completed. Usually 2 appointments are sufficient with the nurse signing the animal off after suture removal. • Arthritis clinics – keeping the older generation of pets moving and comfortable we are able to assist with the correct medication and dosage as well as an individually tailored exercise plan, with monthly or 6 monthly monitoring depending on circumstance this clinic will keep up with the changes experienced by older pets. • Pet Health Plans checks – our monthly payment plan, spreading the cost of your annual booster injections, worm and flea treatment. These clinics concentrate on keeping your pet well and up to date with preventative healthcare.

BRISTON DAY CARE CENTRE GETS A ROCKET!
Well, more than one actually, because Briston's local seafood retailer, the Norfolk Larder, is putting on a Grand Firework display on Tuesday 5 November, with free entry to all, but asking that visitors make a small donation during the festivities to the Briston Day Care Centre.
The show opens at 5.30pm - the Bonfire will be lit at 6pm, and the Firework display itself starts at 6.30pm. There will be refreshments and other attractions there as well, so it will be a great night out for the whole family.
At last year's event, hundreds of people turned up to watch the amazing display, and it is hoped even more will come along to the Norfolk Larder, which is in Mill Road, Briston, and join in this year's fun. The owners of the Norfolk Larder, Dave and Margaret Chambers, say that as local people support them so well, they like to give something back to the Village, and of course the collection will benefit the wonderful work of the Briston Day Care Centre, which provides a good lunch, entertainment, and trips out for local Senior Citizens.
For more details on the Display, please telephone 01263 862991, and for information of the Day Care Centre, telephone them on 01263 861120 on a Monday or Thursday, between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

was operated again by members Neil Ackerley G3RIR and Dave Page M0BKH - we must congratulate them on their efforts and we know that other clubs will be gunning for them next year!
These types of competitions have been around almost since the hobby came into existence, designed to echo the scenario of setting up and operating a portable station in the case of an emergency or if you prefer under Field Day conditions! BDXG members operated their four stations from the clifftops at Trimingham and were helped with magnificent propagation over that weekend, with contacts all over the UK and mainland Europe as far afield as the Czech Republic.
Contesting is just one of the many aspects of amateur radio undertaken by the Bittern DX Group, if you would like to know more about the hobby, getting started etc. or more about the group itself. Please contact them via the group’s website www.bittern-dxers.org.uk or the Secretary Linda Leavold G0AJJ on (01692) 218592 in the evenings or weekends for further information and future events.
The singers were joined by two young musicians - Danny Murphy on the guitar and Maddie Wright on the soprano saxophone - both made an excellent contribution to the concert.
Advance notice - The Sheringham Singers will be giving a Christmas Concert in Saxthorpe Church on Saturday 14 December at 2.30pm.

Another Vodafone signal blackout hits Norfolk with regards to mobile parts of North Norfolk communication. Even in areas where there is
Vodafone users in north Norfolk experienced another three day "black out" of mobile phone coverage at the end of September following more technical problems at their transmitter in West Runton.
Customers in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham took to the Vodafone internet forum to complain about more signal problems, with North Norfolk Labour Party also complaining to Vodafone executives about the network failure and demanding that customers are compensated.
In a statement to the party, Vodafone told them “We are sorry for the intermittent loss of coverage to some parts of North Norfolk. The air conditioning in the cabin at our site in West Runton became faulty which caused the site to shut down as the equipment overheated. This had a knock on effect to a number of other sites in the area as they link into the rest of the

network through the West Runton site. We will continue to monitor the sites in the area to ensure that the coverage remains stable.”
The Labour Party here is continuing to press the major phone companies to bring better signal to North Norfolk and has been running a petition over the past 8 months to call for improvements from Vodafone. They raised the issue of poor mobile phone coverage in rural areas at Labour Party conference in Brighton in September.
Denise Burke, North Norfolk Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate, said “I have been inundated with messages from Vodafone customers who live in north Norfolk who have been let down by the company over the past 12 months.
This issue highlights the problems we are facing in rural north
The phone companies need to get their heads together and come up with a solution that brings a decent phone signal to the many here in north Norfolk.
I have written to Vodafone asking them to compensate customers, and telling them that customer service still isn't good enough.”
Customers still suffering from problems are advised to continue signing Labour’s petition at www.vodafonenfk.com, to tweet @nn_labour, or write to Denise Burke, Thrums, The Hill, Happisburgh, NR12 0PW.

He is also a talented photographer and took all the photos we needed for the portfolio and more besides. Any photos of ours that you have seen over the past few years will no doubt have been taken

Improvements planned for North Norfolk District Council offices
ork to improve customer service is planned for North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Cromer office.
Plans are in place to refurbish the reception and foyer to create an improved service environment for the benefit of customers and staff.
Officescape, a Kings Lynn based company specialising in office design, has re-designed the reception area to create a more accessible and welcoming environment and to make better use of the available space. Reeves Property Restoration Limited, a Norwich-based firm has been appointed to undertake the building work which is planned to start in early October.
A new desk will be added at the entrance to the reception area, allowing staff to ‘meet and greet’ visitors and will ensure they receive a more efficient response when they arrive at the council office. Three self-service computers will be available for public use, and staff will be on hand to assist customers wishing to use them to access

council information; or to make payments for services online to save them waiting to be seen. More complex enquiries will be dealt with in private interview rooms.
Councillor Russell Wright, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Customer Service said: “The Cromer reception area has not been reviewed in terms of how well it serves our customers since 1999. We are looking forward to fully utilising the space so that so that we can serve customers even more professionally and efficiently than we currently do. I am confident that the newly designed area will be a more flexible environment that will enable us to meet customer needs, whether they wish to talk to a member of staff or if they are happy to use our serve-serve computers. I would like to ask the public to bear with us during the refurbishment period and disruption will be kept to a minimum."
Works were due to start on Tuesday 8 October and are expected to take around six weeks to complete.

Norman Lamb gets flu vaccine, and urges those at risk to take up their jab when offered • had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) • diabetes • a neurological condition, for example multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy • a problem with your spleen, for example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed.
north norfolk MP and Health Minister norman Lamb visited the doctor himself last month to get his annual flu jab.
Because he has a history of asthma, and his work frequently takes him into hospitals and care homes, he was advised to get the jab by his GP.
Speaking beforehand, Norman Lamb said “I would urge anyone who thinks they might be at risk – and in particular those over 65, and pregnant women, to get the jab early. Flu is very different from just getting a cold – it can be a really serious illness, leading to prolonged stays in hospital and even death. Even if you had the jab last year, or have already had the flu, it’s important to get the vaccine this year because flu changes every year. Flu is caused by a virus rather than bacteria, so antibiotics don’t work once you are ill – and symptoms can come on very suddenly. As soon as your doctor gets in touch, take up the offer and get the vaccine.”
Summary of those who are recommended to have the flu vaccine: ■ everyone aged 65 and over
■ all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
■ all two and three-year-old children
■ everyone under 65 years of age (but over six months) who has a serious medical condition, including: • a heart problem • a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including bronchitis or emphysema • a kidney disease • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) • liver disease
■ everyone living in a residential or nursing home
■ everyone who cares for an older or disabled person
■ household contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised
■ all frontline health and social care workers
The final decision about whether you should receive the flu vaccine is made by your GP, looking at your medical history and other circumstances.

Weybourne Priory wins major council design award
The 2013 North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Graham Allen Award for building conservation and design has been won by the 11th Century Augustinian Priory at Weybourne.
The NNDC Graham Allen Award, which is now in its 32nd year, was presented at the council offices on Thursday 26 September by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.
The winning project involved the consolidation and stabilisation of the Grade I Listed ruins of Weybourne Priory, which had been deteriorating for many years and were becoming seriously eroded. The conservation work also uncovered a number of previously unknown features, including a gothic arched stone doorway to the cloisters.
The project also incorporates a bold new contemporary monopitch garden room, cleverly tucked away in amongst the remains of the historic priory. This innovative structure provides a new sheltered space within the garden for the owners.
The project was hailed a great success by the panel of judges, made up of NNDC Members led by Cllr. Sue Arnold. They all agreed it was worthy of the prestigious award, not only for its high conservation values and the expert approach adopted by the contractors, but also for the innovative way it has breathed new life
into what was previously a decaying and abandoned structure
Chairman of the judging panel, Cllr. Sue Arnold, said, “Weybourne Priory is an excellent example of classic conservation principles saving a threatened historic structure. The project has preserved the site of one of the district’s most important historic ruins and the owners are to be congratulated on what they have achieved.”
Hoppers Yard, a new retail development and holiday let in Bull Street, Holt, was highly commended. The yard, in the centre of the town, was neglected and unused but the project has not just restored the traditional brick and flint outbuildings, it has transformed the area by developing a number of opportunities for new businesses at the same time, all of which have proved extremely popular with both local people and visitors to the town. The project included the complete restoration of the Grade II Listed house ‘Greenways’, which fronts on Bull Street, for holiday lettings. The judges felt that the Hoppers Yard development shows how heritage can be at the very core of new business activity and conservation-led regeneration.
Also highly commended was the extension to St Andrews Church, Holt, which the judges said very effectively married community and
church needs with innovative and striking design. The extension is a bold architectural statement that has added another dimension to the church and its role within the community. Dragon House, a new house built on the site of a previous dwelling on Letheringsett Road, Thornage, received a commendation. The building’s large, curved, zinc roof and mixture of traditional brick and flint materials make it a particularly striking development. The building was praised for the way it compliments and responds to its surroundings and the landscape setting.

The 24 September meeting was opened by Pat who gave us a delightful grace which her little five year old granddaughter taught her whilst she was in America. Pat then welcomed Brian Hedge who took us back in time to the beginning of the century with his wonderful state of the art slide equipment, entitled "The way we were - from cradle to the grave". How appropriate this was following on from our weekend of 40s events in Sheringham.
Brian took us back to the time of our great grandparents and reminded us of the way they lived - no running water, electricity, no indoor toilets or bathrooms, no washing machines, all the things today we take so much for granted. How did they get their clothes dry without spin dryers! Bath nights were on Fridays with water

poured into a tin bath in front of the fire. Some of us remembered the mangles our grandmothers used on washing day!
During the Second World War three and a half million children were evacuated from the towns to the country for safety with just a very few belongings and their gas masks, not knowing who or where they would be living, fostered by families unknown to them. In those days children were given one third of a pint of free milk each day, but life would be so very different for them compared with life in the big cities. Playtimes were so different - hoops, skittles, marbles were popular and cycling became the easy way for transport - even sidecars were attached to bikes so that the wife could be taken out if there was no car! not too comfortable!
We saw slides of the many people who each September would take their annual leave and flock to the hop fields of Kent to pick the hops where they would enjoy the fresh air the countryside offered.
It was good to be reminded of the simple and harsh life of families in times past, and to realise just how fortunate we are today, to take time to be grateful for all that we have with our comfortable lifestyle.
Brian has many other programmes in his collection, and in thanking him we hope he will visit us again with more memories of past times.
Our second Jumbo Table Top Sale will take place in the Methodist Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham on Saturday 19 October from 9.30am to 12 noon. Tables ÂŁ7 can be booked with Chrissy 01263 822807.
May I on behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance thank everyone who supported our charity on Saturday 24 September at Woodlands Caravan Park, Holt Road, Upper Sheringham where ÂŁ663.35 was raised at a coffee morning, sale of cakes etc, raffle, donations and a 1940 Evening. EAAA are very grateful for the support given to a very valuable service. I would like to thank Dougie and William Wright for allowing us to fundraise at Woodlands Caravan Park.
I would also like to thank Bridget Mayes and all the people in the photograph who gave up their time to make this a very successful event.
Once again many thanks to you all.

Sheringham History Group
At our meeting in October a talk was given by Mrs. Elizabeth Budd which was packed with information about The Norfolk Records Office.
Elizabeth is part of the outreach staff that conduct tours and relay information to the community about the Norfolk Record Office.
Mrs. Budd talked for 45 Minutes about the 25 million records that are kept by the Norfolk Record Office. She mentioned it would take 42 years just to count the collection. She explained how the records are preserved in perfect conditions.
I wonder if readers know what a Norfolk book sofa is? It is a patented item in which to place historic books after accessing them from the archives.
FreeAds
Some of the areas of research Elizabeth mentioned included family history (start with what you know, your immediate family and work back rather than finding all the people with a specific surname, try electoral and census records - Sheringham Library can be helpful in starting a family tree) and house history (historic maps, deeds, tithe maps, land tax maps, electoral and census to find previous occupants or owners).
The Norfolk Record office is located next to the Norfolk County Hall at Norwich. It may seem daunting to visit but Mrs Budd took us through the process of registering when you visit, entering the search room and accessing records. Also mentioned was the Norfolk Heritage
Centre which is located at the Millennium Library in the Forum in Norwich City Centre.
Old newspapers are held on microfilm where you can read about historic events in Norfolk pertaining to local or possibly ancestors living at the time.
Several members expressed interest in visiting the Norfolk Record Office and a group visit may be arranged.

Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning
The grand total of £804.71 was raised on Friday 27 September when SiS, a group of local friends based in Sheringham, held a successful event in St Peters Church Hall, Sheringham. The hall was very kindly donated by the Church, free of charge, for the coffee morning and lunch. Melanie Brown Fit Together County Coordinator from Active Norfolk organised a walk to start and finish at the coffee morning. The walkers paid to take part choosing to have a soup lunch or just tea or coffee. One very enterprising walker, Kathy Lee, managed to raise the wonderful sum of £205 in sponsorship! A tombola, raffle and other stalls all helped to raise the total. Look out for next year's event and join in the walk and come to the coffee morning. Many thanks to all those who supported on the day to raise money for our local Macmillan Cancer Support.
MAJOR ENGINEERING BOOST FOR NORTH NORFOLK
In a deal expected to cost some £100,000, the North Norfolk Railway has acquired the order book, expertise and specialist machinery of Chatham Steam Ltd, one of the major companies specialising in boiler overhauls for the heritage railway movement. The new NNR Engineering will be based at the railway’s Weybourne Works, and Chatham’s operations and machinery will move there as soon as the workshops have been reconfigured internally. Chatham Steam director Robin Monday and key personnel will also be moving up to Norfolk. The deal has been under discussion for three or four months, and was ratified by the NNR Board on 28 September. Hugh Harkett said “You can’t just stand still in this business – we’re all delighted and excited about this major development.” Robin Monday commented that “being on a railway is where we should be – I’ve always looked for the right railway to go to. It’s a win-win situation, good for existing and potential customers. And it’s a great opportunity to hand our skills on for the future.” Overhauls will continue at Chatham’s Kent site at Detling, until the Weybourne shops are ready. Harkett summed up “It’s a great deal for the NNR, and significantly raises our profile amongst preserved railways, as we’ll be able to tackle complete boiler and chassis overhauls for locos both here and overseas. And we won’t ever be faced with our engines having to go away for boiler repair!”
HAPPY HALLOWE’EN ON THE POPPY LINE.
Hallowe’en is fast approaching, and the Poppy Line is ready with a week that’s full of treats and tricks. Ghoulies and ghosties abound! At Weybourne Station, if you’re feeling brave enough, you can enter the spook-laden Hallowe’en Hall, hellish haunt of witches, warlocks and shuddering spiders. You can get in (and out again!) free with your Rover train ticket. There are special free-to-enter prize competitions – a fancy dress con-
test for the best-dressed Hallowe’enster (age limit 15). And we’ll be looking for the best carved pumpkin, which will earn the winner a family ticket for a fabulous Day Out with Thomas next May. Naturally, there’s a special Ghost Train. On Hallowe’en itself, Thursday October 31st, the Ghost Train will leave Sheringham at 6.30pm, returning around 9.30pm. Listen to ghostly tales of Norfolk as you ride through the darkness – and make sure you bring a camera to grab ghostly images all along the line! Tickets for the Ghost Train are £10 for adults and £5.50 for children between 8 and 15. Booking is essential – online at www.nnrailway.co.uk, by phone on 01263 820 800, or in person at Sheringham station office.

But before we get to Christmas we have our Halloween Party Night to look forward to. It’s always a great night with lots of people arriving in fancy dress and of course enjoying the live music which this year is from a band with a very large following ‘Blonde Horizon’ who will be performing in the bar from around 8.30pm until late. Don’t forget if you have are
planning a Christmas party for you and your work mates or a get together with family and friends that for larger parties we offer a free disco as part of our Christmas party Nights so it is certainly worth having a word with us before you make your final decision.
nATHAn BOOn’S RECIPE FOR RED OnIOn JAM
Ingredients 4 large red onions finely sliced, 1 cup red wine vinegar 6 tbls sugar 1 cinnamon stick water to cover if required seasoning

Dear Margaret,
I feel I must write to answer the doom and gloom letter printed in your September issue from Ross Wordie.
As far as I am aware the NNR have no intention of running services between Sheringham and Norwich but only to extend the line to Melton Constable and then to Dereham as part of the coastal rail network.
It does however make sense to only have one station in town and I really think that the minimal disruption of two trains an hour will not bring the town to its knees .In any case any disruption could be minimised by implementing the one way system proposed some years ago, bringing traffic from a new mini roundabout on Weybourne Road down Church St then down The High Street then Wyndham Street and out of the town by way of Beeston road, with another mini roundabout on Cromer Road.
This would have the advantage of freeing up Station road for the relocation of both the Wednesday & Saturday markets and other events enabling more parking spaces to be available on market days, leading to more potential customers for the shopkeepers. As an aside, if our shopkeepers are so concerned regarding loss of trade, why were so many closed on the Sunday of the recent 40s weekend organised by The Lobster, in spite of the town heaving with ‘potential customers’.
I think on the whole our local councillors do a fairly good job but they could look at why some of the Common on the way to Beeston Bump is being fenced off by some of the houseowners along Nelson Road and also why there is no light working at the bottom of the black steps leading to East Beach from Vincent/ Cliff Road. I await their reply with interest . Yours sincerely, Graham McEvoy, Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
May I put your correspondent Ross Wordie right on one important point? The North Norfolk Railway is NOT behind the plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway, and certainly does NOT intend to turn the Poppy Line ‘into just another link in a regular train service between Norwich and Holt or beyond’, as Mr Wordie alleges.
Absolutely not. It is the NNR’s firm intention and future strategy to focus on running the steam heritage railway between Sheringham and Holt. Any plans the Norfolk Orbital Railway and the Melton Constable Trust may have (if they ever come to fruition!) will need to fall in with that strategy, which will not be compromised.
The Poppy Line, as Mr Wordie says, is one of our major tourist attractions. This year it is set to carry well over 150,000 passengers, many of them people who come to Sheringham expressly to ride on the railway, and who afterwards spend time and money in the town.
That’s reality. The plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway are, by contrast, so much “pie in the sky”.
And whatever those plans are, they do NOT, repeat NOT, come from the NNR. Colin Borg, North Norfolk Railway
28
Dear Margaret,
When myself and colleagues met with senior management at Vodafone earlier this year we told them the problems customers in North Norfolk were experiencing were simply not good enough. Indeed, from their full page advertisement in newspapers it appeared they had taken on board that they needed to improve.
Six months on it only takes a quick search on Twitter, a look at the petition at www.vodafonenfk.com, or a glimpse at Vodafone's online forum to see that the company has a long way to go.
Failures with equipment, like the incident with the cooling fan over the weekend of 21/22 September or the power cut in July, I accept are often unavoidable. However, how you deal with these problems make all the difference. There is still a delay in Vodafone accepting and communicating the problem, dealing with quickly enough, and issuing compensation for inconvenience, when appropriate.
The outdated technology that is in place in rural areas also means that when one transmitter has a problem (for instance in West Runton) customers across the district also suffer (as far as North Walsham). In May Vodafone accepted this large relay infrastructure was not ideal and part of the problem.
So far the company has conceded that in September those connected to the Bacton transmitter suffered more than 3 days loss of coverage and therefore will be compensated - I recommend that they take this up - but I still believe they need to go further.
Vodafone made assurances to me that North Norfolk was on the map for improved technology which could also include significant 3G upgrades. This is welcome, but with on-going problems continuing to plague customers I would appeal to them to speed this process up. After all, how many customers will they be left with if they continue to offer a poor service in Norfolk? Jono Read, Press Officer for North Norfolk Labour Party
Dear Margaret,
This afternoon, 29 September at 12.30 pm, I was riding my motorcycle along Station Approach from Church Street towards Station Road. As I approached one of these so called safety crossings, between the North Norfolk Railway and the Tea Rooms on the opposite side of the road, two members of the public without warning decided to cross the road causing me to do an emergency stop. I was then subjected to some foul language including four letter words in the view that 'I should have given way'. I explain that these crossings were constructed to aid wheel chair users and were not a proper pedestrian crossing. Still receiving a barrage of verbal abuse they remonstrated, 'how are we to know, we presumed we had the right of way'.
I believe those who visit our town are being misled by the construction of these crossings, as there is no signage to those using the highway and those pedestrians who believe that they have a right of way. If in the event of an accident say between a motorist and a pedestrian I believe that Norfolk County Council are leaving themselves open in court as no one is clear to what these crossings are designed for and who has the right of way.
I understand there are two more of these crossings planned to be constructed in other areas of the town, why? This is going to cause more confusion to those who do not understand why they have been constructed and why there is no signage to the road users as to who has right of way - planned confusion! Can someone explain to me why more of these crossing are planned to be constructed? Who asked for them? And in legal terms in the event of an accident, who has the right of way? Richard May, Sheringham

SOUNDS OF AMERICA!
A packed Copeman Centre at Briston on Friday 4 October was due to top UK organist Tom Horton playing one of the USA's best exports - a Lowrey Digital organ!
Tom is an expert on both electronic and Cinema Pipe Organs, as well as getting involved in musical projects all over East Anglia, including the annual Pantomime down at Southwold. On this occasion, however, he played music of all sorts and styles to a very packed hall. His programme included the theme from 'Star Wars', an Ivor Novello medley, a really jazzy rock version of the Surfari's hit 'Wipeout', some superb Big Band numbers from the 1940's, and even a medley of Hawaiian tunes he remembered from his Honeymoon in Hawaii. As usual, the show was a fundraiser for the Copeman Centre, making £170 for the Hall's funds, and also sales of greetings cards and preserves in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance made £55!
The next show is on Friday 15 November, when a very versatile young lady by the name of Elizabeth Harrison will be playing for us again she is not only a brilliant organist, but she is an HGV driver, has her own design business, and runs a Bed and Breakfast establishment from her home in Lancashire .... oh, and as a hobby, she collects vintage tractors! She will give you loads of top class and very varied music, as well as plenty of laughs. Tickets are £6 if pre-booked, with juniors getting in at half price. You can get yours now by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844 - she is pleased to accept cash, cheques, or most popular Credit and Debit cards. The show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm. If you like a good night out at a budget price, what are you waiting for? Get on the phone now!
Dear Margaret,
We would like to say an enormous thank you to all who supported the Macmillan Coffee Morning at Thorpe Market Church. An amazing £628.56 was raised.

Cornet or Trumpet - What’s The Difference?
Noooo! You don’t lick one and blow the other.
For those who may not know, they are two musical instruments which are almost the same - thinking about it, you could put a huge dollop of ice cream in the bell of a cornet and… phew, what a blow out! Seriously though, the difference between the two is in the shape of the tube through which the air travels to produce the notes. The result is that the cornet has a more mellow tone than the trumpet, which produces a sharper sound.
While cornets, and not trumpets, are the choice of brass bands, there are many musicians who play both, as do some of the bandsmen/women of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band.
But hey, to hear what a cornet sounds like why not come along at 7.30pm to the Band’s Concert at St Peters Church, Sheringham, on Saturday 26 October. The concert is being held to raise funds for renovation of the Church. Admission is free, although any contribution you would like to make to the retirement collection would be very much appreciated.
Finally, if you feel that deep inside you there lurks the desire to learn to play a cornet, or any other brass band instrument come to that, why not have a chat with a member of the band on the evening of the Concert. Alternatively, visit our web site below. Remember you are never too old, or too young, to learn to play. See you on the 26 October at St Peter’s Church. www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com

Local Artists’ Exhibition
Cromer artists, Leslie Hawkes Nockels and Des Clover, have work on show at a major NOVA (North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists) show entitled "NOVA EXPOSED” to celebrate the great new Atrium Gallery at North Walsham, 3 October 6 November.
Leslie is showing “Salthouse”, originally began in 2007/8 and after many changes , it was quietly sidelined, its framing made it too big for her car – until NOVA this summer decided to have a selected exhibition of abstract or semi abstract work. “Salthouse” was taken out of the frame, and she took a deep breath and
repainted the marsh, the dipping countryside and the sky filled with skudding clouds, with a total nonrepresentational expression of the fierce wind blowing over the marsh, the light, the shingle and the sea. Hence its title Salthouse: Wind, Marsh, Shingle, Sea – Inundation.
After Art School, Des Clover worked as a Graphic Designer and Book Illustrator for a London Publisher, followed by twenty five years as a Studio Potter in Cambridgeshire. He says ‘I have always painted but since moving to North Norfolk have been able to paint full-time.
