Heart-Stop Survivor Thanks Her Lifesaver at Sheringham Defibrillator Launch Cardiac arrest survivor, Sandra King, had an emotional reunion last month with the Community First Responder who restarted her heart. They marked the occasion by unveiling a new heart-starting defibrillator for the use of the general public, in central Sheringham.

At the unveiling, Sandra recalled the moment her family’s Christmas celebrations turned into a nightmare ‘I was at home with my children and grandchildren - we were just getting things ready for lunch and the next thing I knew was when I woke up in hospital two days later!’ Her children, Katy and Alex, had witnessed their mother collapse and realised that she was not breathing normally, indicating that her heart had stopped. Their first aid training kicked in and they immediately started chest compressions to buy Sandra time whilst her stunned husband, Dave, called 999 to summon somebody with a heart-starting defibrillator. The East of England Ambulance Service immediately dispatched a team, including the air ambulance from Norwich and the Sheringham Community First Responders (CFRs). Nathan Liberman was the CFR on-call, at his home just the other side of Sheringham, and he was at Sandra’s side within minutes. Continued on page 4...

I know it won’t be long before Sheringham’s new public-access defibrillator is used in a similar way and another life may be saved but this time the initial life-savers will be ordinary members of our community, people who know a bit about chest compressions and are willing to have a go.”

Nathan administered three shocks with his defibrillator before Sandra’s heart began to respond - just as the local paramedic arrived and the air ambulance was landing in a field across the road. Canaan Christian Centre

Blind singer and songwriter Marilyn Baker together with Tracy will be visiting North Norfolk in December.

They are running a day called ‘Listening to God’ at The Canaan Christian Centre at 21 Holt Road, Sheringham on Wednesday 4 December starting at 10am.

Everybody is welcome for a day of encouragement, looking forward to Christmas and all that it means. Lunch will be provided but you do need to book in by telephoning the Director, Evelyn Smith on 01263 478372.

Marilyn and Tracy together with their guide dog Staffi and hearing dog Goldie will also be at all events and often take part. Don’t miss this wonderful event.

40s Weekend

Sometimes visitors and residents can get the wrong impression. For example, recently a couple of letters have erroneously believed that the 40s weekend is organised by Graham at the Lobster when in reality it’s a North Norfolk Railway organised event and has been for many years. Many other people in the town, are involved in making this a colourful and very successful event., including the Lobster, the Town Council and Chamber of Commerce.

Changes to Council meeting programme

Owing to the building works taking place to refurbish and improve the main reception area at North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Cromer office, a number of committee meetings planned to take place during the building period have been re-located. This will provide easier access for Members and general public wishing to attend and avoid interference from any building noise.

Information Day for those living with and beyond cancer The Big C Centre, Norwich, opens its doors to offer help and support to anyone living with and beyond cancer. A special cancer Information Day is being held at Norwich’s Big C Centre on Saturday 9 November 10.30am – 3.30pm. Charities from the region, Big C and hospital professionals are coming together under one roof to inform cancer patients and their families and friends of all the help available to them in our region. This will include advice on work and cancer, talking to children, money matters, healthy eating, travel insurance, body image, psychosexual issues, keeping active and more. There will also be samples of sweet and savoury tasters for people to try.

A similar event was held in May this year, and saw people affected by cancer walking away armed with information and advice that could help them through their own particular cancer journey. One visitor, who had recently become a carer for their loved one, said, ‘As a carer, I now have a better understanding of how cancer affects you. I found it useful and am very grateful for the information’.

As part of the market-place style plan for the day there will be stands with information on local and national cancer support groups, stands from British Red Cross, Age UK and Crossroads, plus many specialists on hand for help and advice. Taster sessions of hand massage will be available on the day.

On receiving their grant, Holt Community First Responders said “thank you for this generous sum, we are reliant on donations and for a small village like Bodham to donate such a large amount is great. We always really enjoy being part of the Weekend too”.

Bodham Big Weekend’s outgoing Chairman Peter Bedell opened the presentation by thanking all those who had supported this year’s event. He said “the huge success of the Weekend means we can donate to both local organisations and causes beyond Bodham.”

The cheque presentation marked Peter’s last event as Chairman of the committee. From its beginnings in 2008 the event has grown to become an important event in north Norfolk’s summer calendar and now includes the successful live music event Rock Bodham.

This has been on the menu now for a while and is a firm favourite as it’s perfect for this nice windy Autumnal weather we’re enjoying! The boss was out on the ride-on mower on Saturday morning mulching up the leaves on the lawn, but of course by the time he’s finished the grass was thick with them again… I think he just enjoys riding around with Duran Duran in his headphones to be honest.

We’ve been extremely busy here at the Grove, with a two-week waiting list for most weekend evenings and full houses for Sunday lunch too. We’re opening for the first time in over sixty years for Christmas Lunch this year, which promises to be a wonderful occasion, so do pop in for a menu or call us on 01263512412 to book your table.

Brioche Bread and Butter Pudding (Serves 4)

Please enjoy my bread and butter pudding – it takes a bit of work but is most definitely worth it in the end.

See you soon, Charlie

1 small tin all butter brioche loaf 10 slices thick cut white bread ½ cup dark chocolate ½ cup white chocolate ½ cup muscavado sugar 1 vanilla pod 1 pint thick double cream 4 large free-range eggs 125g unsalted butter (melted) A lot of love

For the ice cream: 2 full cups of full fat milk, 2/3 cup double cream 7 free range egg yolks ½ cup unrefined caster sugar 2 good pinches ground ginger Two good tablespoons of stem ginger, drained and diced. ■ Using either enamel or glass Pyrex dish, brush with melted butter ■ Slice the brioche loaf and cut into triangles ■ Whisk eggs with cream and the sugar with the rest of the melted butter ■ Slice your vanilla pod down the centre and scrap the seed with the back of the knife ■ Add to the cream

and butter mix, whisk lightly. Melt both chocolates in a glass Pyrex bowl over a simmering pan on a stove until chocolate is tepid. ■ Place the brioche and white bread alternatively in four layers in your Pyrex dish, with the melted chocolate drizzled off the whisk between each layer. ■ Once all the bread and brioche are in the dish, add cream mix over the top. With latex gloves, pushing down so all your bread absorbs the mixture. ■ Drizzle remaining chocolate over the top ■ Bake in the oven on gas mark 4 / 5 (180) for fifteen to 30 mins depending on oven until golden brown. This is a basic recipe for crème anglais, with the stem ginger of course. ■ Run a medium- sized saucepan under cold water ■ Pour in the cream and milk and bring to the boil ■ Whisk eggs, sugar and ground ginger while waiting for milk to heat ■ Once boiled pour over the egg mix ■ Whisk and return the eggy mix to the saucepan ■ Return the saucepan to medium heat and gently cook through the Anglais, stirring continuously – DO NOT RE-BOIL!!! When mix coats the back of the spoon you know it’s done. ■ Put the saucepan into a bowl of ice water; once cool place in food mixer with butterfly whisk ■ Whisk in the diced stem ginger and place in a two litre ice-cream container, pop into the freezer ready to enjoy.

Festival launches Community Grant scheme The Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival has announced the opening of their Community Grant Scheme for the second year running.

After the success of this year’s Charity Lifebuoy Auction the Festival committee has announced a total of £5,000 will be donated to charity. To date, the Festival has donated over £24,000 to local projects since the first Charity Auction of Crab and Lobster Sculptures in 2010.

Charities and organisations in Cromer and Sheringham can now apply to the scheme which aims to benefit local good causes. On Sunday 25 August the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close with the annual Charity Auction which saw over 70 decorated Lifebuoys go under the hammer raising £5,000. Earlier in the year the Lifebuoys formed the Festival’s Art Trail and were displayed in businesses across Cromer and Sheringham. Over 200 individuals had a hand in decorating the Lifebuoys which were sponsored by local businesses.

The Community Grant Scheme is open to organisations and charities in Cromer and Sheringham to apply to for grant funding for specific projects or for work that they would like to embark on.

In 2012 the Festival donated a total of £7,500 to charity split between the Fishermen’s

Mission and the inaugural Community Grant Scheme. The Fishermen’s Mission was chosen as the Festival’s main charity for the vital support the Mission gives to fishermen and their families and received £2,500.

The remaining £5,000 was distributed between 14 local organisations and groups who work tirelessly for the benefit of the local community. The organisations who received grants from the scheme in 2012 were:

Open Door Community Arts, Sheringham U18s Football Team, Suffield Park Infant & Nursery School, Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Association, The Cromer Bells Project, RNLI Cromer, After Breast Cancer

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “the Festival thought it vital to support charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community.”

Kate Royall Festival Secretary said “We are welcoming applications from organisations or charities based in and around Cromer and Sheringham. Projects or activities can include local community events, groups, sporting activities, and purchase of specialist equipment. This list is not exclusive however and we urge anyone to get in touch to find out more.”

To apply for a grant organisations should fill in the application form which is available to download from the Festival’s website or by emailing enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or calling the Festival secretary on 07775 337201. Applications should be received by Friday 29 November 2013.

In 2014 the Festival will run 16-18 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival on 07775 337201 or email enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

Sheringham Players Perform The Unexpected Guest at Sheringham Little Theatre

For their Autumn production Sheringham Players present Agatha Christie’s ‘The Unexpected Guest’.

Lost in thick fog on a November night, a stranger (played by Tim Travers) arrives

at a remote house in rural South Wales. Approaching the house for help, he discovers Richard Warwick

dead, shot through the head. His much younger wife, Laura (played by Hazel Warrington) is found holding a gun. Did she do it? Or was it another member of this strange household, who all seem to have a motive? This is an unmissable play with a strong supporting cast. Follow the twists and turns of the plot to find out “whodunnit”. Can you guess the answer before the investigating officers? Test your deductive skills on Thursday 14 November to Saturday 16 November at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre. (Box Office 01263 822347, tickets £8)

Good wishes for the play have been received from Liza Goddard, Frazer Hines, Mark Wynter, Sophie Ward, and last but not least Renee Asherson. Renee Asherson is the only living Renee Asherson member of the original cast when the play was first staged at the Duchess Theatre in London’s West End, in August 1958. Many Agatha Christie devotees will remember Renee Asherson, now in her late 90s. So, it was a great honour for directors Greg Pope and Brenda Williams, and cast and crew to receive her good wishes for the play.

Curtains Up for Little Theatre Interns The Cast

An Arts Council programme has allowed Sheringham Little Theatre to offer two paid-internships to two young people in the local area

On the 23 September Sheringham Little Theatre began its new internship scheme with help from house (www.housetheatre.org.uk) and the Art Council England’s Creative Employment Programme.

The scheme has enabled the theatre to employ two young people (aged 18-24) as paid interns, with Evie-May being taken on as the new Administration Intern and Joe Burnham being chosen as the new Publicity Intern. Both are already representing the theatre in different capacities, including a recent appearance on BBC Radio Norfolk (see picture).

The Creative Employment Programme has enabled 11 venues to offer a total of 16 paid internships, with the programme covering 50% of the salary expenses and the venues covering the other 50%. Each of the internships lasts for six months.

Evie-May said “It’s a fantastic opportunity to work within such a supportive and creative environment. I’m really excited for all the experiences that I’ll encounter over the next few months. I’ve already been helping coordinate some of the work behind our upcoming pantomime – and it has been great to help local children get involved with the production. I’d love to run my own performance venue one day so everything I’m learning here is absolutely invaluable.”

Joe Burnham added “Working in the theatre industry can be very competitive, and lots of people my age can’t afford to continue doing free work experience to build up a portfolio of skills, so internships like this are absolutely fantastic. Right now I’m busy making posters, coordinating our social media and helping to apply market research Sheringham Independent 379 November 2nd 2013

throughout our venue’s publicity campaigns. This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time, and I can’t wait to see what it brings.”

Debbie Thompson (Director of Sheringham Little Theatre) said “We are very excited about the internships and are delighted to have found two very talented and motivated young people who are already proving a tremendous asset to the Little Theatre.”

The new Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham was packed at the end of September as people flocked to the Open Day and Opening Ceremony.

Lighthouse stewards opened the doors early to admit the large queue that was forming outside the striking new centre on Cromer Road in the town. Free coffee and cakes were on offer, and cut price speciality coffees were available, as people took the opportunity to view the new facilities.

The crowds were enthralled by demonstrations from the morning’s special guest, Daniel Cutting. He is the world freestyle football champion, and holds 5 world records for such feats as football “keep-ups” and other football

acrobatics. He is also a Christian, and explained the relevance of his faith.

Following a buffet lunch, the ribbon was cut by Heather Sheen, one of the older members of the fellowship, and Josiah Paine, one of the youngest. Those present then packed the auditorium for a special service of celebration, which included a drama from the Lighthouse Drama Group, and a song from the Sheringham Youth Choir. Rev Richard Lewis, Baptist Regional Minister, gave a talk, and greetings were brought from other Sheringham clergy, and also from the town’s mayor, Doug Smith. The day concluded with tea and more cake.

This has been the culmination of around 20 years of hoping, praying, and planning by the town’s Baptists as they struggled with their cramped and dated Holway Road premises, which developed structural defects in recent years.

“The fact that we have been able to raise £1.5m to finance this wonderful facility is

quite miraculous” explained Pastor Bryan Pickard, “But it shows that God’s hand has been in this all along- and we believe He will use us to do a great work in North Norfolk”.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER POPPIES

‘In Flanders fields the poppies grow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.’

Colonel John McRae, MD, Canadian Army, 1915.

There are over seventy species of poppies: annuals, biennials, and perennials occurring in a wide range of habitats from lowlands to high mountains. Most are from Central and Southern Europe and temperate Asia, a few from South Africa, Australia and America.

Many of these species make excellent garden plants, the larger species are spectacular in

mixed or herbaceous border whilst several of the smaller poppies are suitable for a rock garden or an annual border. Most of the poppies are fully hardy to frost hardy and grow well in deep, fertile soil in full sun except for the alpine varieties which need good drainage. Sow seed in spring: for annuals and biennials sow directly into the soil, for perennials, sow seed in containers in a cold frame. Divide perennials in spring or take root cuttings in late autumn or early winter.

However at this time of the year poppies mean only one thing, the red poppy that we wear on Remembrance Sunday. The poem quoted above by John McRae is believed to have been written because he was so moved by the death of a friend and the profusion of poppies he could see in a nearby cemetery. The custom of wearing a red poppy started in Georgia in the United States, where Moina Michael, a worker with the YMCA, was so moved by the Flanders field poem that she vowed to wear a poppy evermore. In 1921 the British Legion was formed and was approached by a YMCA friend of Moina Michael’s with samples of artificial poppies she had made. The idea of a ‘Poppy Day’, marking the anniversary of the Armistice, took off immediately. That year, on 11 November, the British Legion raised more than £100,000 from the sale of poppies.

The poppy is of course of particular significance in Norfolk in the brief fashionability of the cliff-top landscapes of Cromer and Overstrand, which were immortalised as ‘Poppy-land’ by the Daily Telegraph’s drama critic Clement Scott. Scott had taken to visiting these new seaside resorts in the 1880s and had fallen in love not only with the local miller’s daughter, but with the sight of waves of scarlet blossoms in fields and lonely churchyards, sweeping down to the very edge of the cliffs, and set against the sparkle of the North Sea in high summer. He began to write ecstatic columns about poppy-land in 1883, and started the fad that brought thousands of visitors to the little villages on what the Great Eastern Railway promptly named the Poppy Line.

We have therefore a plant that provokes powerful images from the East Anglia Arcadia of Clement Scott ‘Neath the blue of the sky, in the green of the corn/It is there that the regal red poppies are born’ to the sea of mud and suffering around the First World War battlefields thirty years later which we shall remember on Sunday, 10th November and again on Monday, 11th November, Armistice Day, when the British Legion is planting a ‘Flanders Field’ of poppies beside the ramparts of the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the final cat in the colony mentioned previously has still to be caught and neutered, we believe we will finally be successful as the cat is now going into the trap for food. It is just a case of catching the cat on a day when operating time is available. In the meantime, another cat not seen before has been caught and neutered.

Buckaroo, the little kitten which came in recently did give us cause for concern to start with as he had such a large tummy, which we now think was due to malnutrition. With regular meals he has lost his tummy and we are delighted to see him joining in the chasing and playing games with the other kittens.

Depending on the reasons why a cat has come into care, we will blood test for FIV and FELV. We do however always test when a cat is handed in as a stray. Fortunately over the years we have had very few cats where the initial blood test has come back as positive. In these cases a further sample is sent to an external laboratory for confirmation and we have thankfully had few instances where the second test has indicated the cat has got FIV or FELV.

When Bombardier arrived in care there was nothing to indicate that he would test positive for FIV but, unfortunately, he has and further tests have confirmed the initial result. This does not mean that Bombardier cannot find a loving home, merely that he will need to be an indoor cat either on his own or with other FIV positive cats. Bombardier is only five years old, is a handsome ginger and white lad, very friendly and laid back who I am sure will soon find someone to love him.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Remember, remember, the 5th of November

Carnival & religious celebrations, Bonfire Night and New Year - we enjoy fireworks year round, but they can be a source of fear for many animals. If not addressed, noise phobias tend to get worse over time so it’s always best to be prepared.

Here’s the Animal Magic Dog Club top tips for dealing with Firework Fear in your dog:

will only make things worse.

• Some dogs may want to hide when frightened, so providing a ‘doggy den’ may help them to cope. If you know your dog is going to be frightened on the night then set

• Dogs that are particularly fearful may benefit from a noise desensitisation programme, this needs to be undertaken many months in advance following guidance from your Vet.

Don’t forget other small animals: Cats should be kept indoors with somewhere warm, cosy and dark to hide. If your pets live outside, partly cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets so that one area is well covered from the sights and sounds of the fireworks.

• Give your dog a long walk during the late afternoon making sure that they go to the toilet and keep them indoors after dark.

• A meal containing carbohydrates such as well cooked rice, pasta or mashed potato may make your dog feel more sleepy and calm.

• Close curtains to hide the flashes of light and turn up the TV or radio to mask the sound.

• Ignore the firework noises yourself. If your dog shows any signs of fear or anxiety do not react – it’s important never to punish or fuss over your dog when it is scared as this

• Seek advice from your vet as there are a number of products which may help your pet to cope.

this up in advance so they are comfortable and happy inside.

• Don’t leave your dog alone in the house - he may panic and injure himself.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.

Lily Likes…

“We used to have one like that” is usually the first comment heard as customers enter “Lily Likes…”, Sheringham’s new pop-up shop, and see the vintage accessories, trinkets and curios which adorn the shelves. They then discover the framed original music sheets alongside stunning mounted photographs of wartime aircraft and local scenes by photographer Archie Dundas, as well as a selection of new, vintage-style costume jewellery in embellished gift boxes, and realise that this little shop offers a unique Christmas shopping opportunity.

Andrew and Sheila Parish, who also run The Sun Deck Bed & Breakfast, have opened the outlet in Sheringham for the run-up to Christmas. This is their first retail venture, which has arisen from a love of all things vintage – and an urgent need to cull their ever-growing collection! Lily Likes… is affectionately named after Auntie Lily, who lived to shop and who bought any item which took her fancy in every available colour. The shop will be open between Wednesday and Sunday every week until Christmas. Andrew and Sheila and their daughter Abbie hope that you will visit and enjoy browsing through their eclectic (and some say eccentric!) range soon.

TESCO SHERINGHAM OPENS

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB

Our members gathered in October to watch in-house demonstrations by two of our ladies. With the cooler, autumnal weather in mind, we saw how to make the best use of the many varieties of foliage that can be gathered from the garden at this time of year to create an unusual arrangement without flowers. The second demonstration showed how, with the aid of sticks, sticky foam, sparkling cord and twinkling adornments, star and other shaped ornaments can be made to enhance any flower or foliage arrangement. Members then set about creating their own arrangements and throughout the evening we all feasted on a delicious finger buffet.

For our 7 November meeting, we veer away from our usual format and look forward to welcoming a representative from Pensthorpe, who will be telling us all about the gardens, wildlife and activities at the awardwinning reserve which is right on our doorstep.

We meet on the first Thursday in the month at St Andrews Church, Sheringham, starting at 7.30pm, with refreshments available from 7pm. Shirley on 01263 825059 has more details and guests are always welcome.

Like it or loathe it, Tesco Sheringham is open. A long history of opposition goes back to 1996, October 13th 2010 was the date approval was given by the North Norfolk District Council, despite Sheringham Town Council having consistently voted down all proposals. Residents were divided almost exactly in two, when asked to vote for this and the Greenhouse Community Project, which would include a Waitrose. North Norfolk District Council said 1,180 were in favour of Tesco and 1,165 said yes to the Waitrose plan. We shall see how our our unique high street fares in the coming months and years. Photo opposite (courtesy Robin Myerscough) shows first shopper Pamela Henderson presented with a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates by the store manager Simon Nellis.

Dear Margaret,

I think I must be losing the plot! We hear there is no money in the District and County Councils pockets. We now find we have two new potential road death traps one each side of the Little Theatre. I have asked around and not one person thinks they are a good idea, in fact quite the contrary. Still, County obviously has money to waste, yet not on the School Car Park in Cooper Road £125.000 approximately if anyone has any spare cash. Tesco’s will not fund or contribute towards the car park although if they build houses behind the new Community Hall there will probably be more children! Then I read in the Sheringham Independent that the District Council is redesigning the entrance hall in their offices. How much has that cost to get re-designed and replaced. Surely as long as they have a table in there where visitors can sign in that is all that is needed in times of hardship. I do dislike wasting money and quite agree that the times of plenty are over and we all have to ‘do our bit’ and put up with less services than we are used to. But when the District and County can boldly waste monies in these cash strapped times it sets no example to the people who pay their council taxes, in fact it makes their whole budgeting a joke. Kind regards Avril B Duke-Millar

Dear Margaret,

Hey! We’ve been hoodwinked! We were told that the large building that has been erected on the Cromer Road near the roundabout was going to be ‘our new supermarket.’ No, it isn’t! It belongs to Tesco! It says so in big letters attached to and surrounding this impressive but, in our view, greedy, harmful and misguided development. We are left wondering, therefore, what effect this powerful, fiercely competitive and ruthlessly profit-seeking interloper will have on ‘The Community’ of Sheringham. For example, are we going to become just another ‘one of its towns’ in which case shouldn’t we be challenging the primitive system which gives rise to these huge predatory companies? And, when we do, let’s also start thinking about democratically transforming this perilous method of organising human affairs into one which is fair, sustainable and more advanced! Yours sincerely Colin Millen, Campaign for Self-Government, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

As a group we would like to say a few words with regards to the recent vandalism carried out at the Cromer Road Play Park. We are obviously very disappointed that some of the old equipment has been damaged - some so badly that it has been totally removed. It makes it even more upsetting to us in light of the efforts that we and the community are putting into raising funds for a brand new Playpark. We are very conscious of the fact that people will not want to donate their valuable time and money to the cause if it is going to be wasted further down the line because of vandals. We sincerely hope that when we reach our goal and provide an exciting new area that it is treated with greater respect than we have seen in recent weeks. Yours sincerely, Sheringham Playpark Revamp

Dear Margaret,

Has the population of over 65s in Sheringham exploded to such an extent that it was necessary for us to stand 10-15 minutes outside the Health Centre, in the rain, to receive our flu jab, slowly but gratefully snaking our way inside? Herded outside like cattle. By the time we actually had our injection we were chilled and wet. On being asked by the nurse if I had a cold, I told her I hadn’t before standing out in the rain but probably had now, I was told how lucky I was as at her surgery there was a wait of up to an hour – in the rain? We know at this stage of our life we are surplus to requirements so is this an unsubtle way of thinning out the ranks? I would estimate 75% of the people standing there had arthritis in some form or other and making us queue in those conditions showed such contempt. It hasn’t happened other years, why this year? Yours sincerely Mrs Doreen Hale

Dear Margaret,

Many thanks for printing my letter re new pedestrian crossings in Sheringham. I would now like you to print the reply that I received back from Norfolk County Council … ‘We are sorry to hear about your recent experience on Station Approach, Sheringham and would like to explain our reasoning behind introducing the new crossing points. A recent study identified that the pedestrian accident rate in Sheringham Town Centre was high, particularly so when compared to similar coastal towns such as Cromer. We have therefore developed a scheme to raise awareness of pedestrian crossing activity. The contrasting strips across the carriageway are ‘courtesy crossings’. They do not denote priority to pedestrians but are there to highlight to all road users a location where regular crossing activity is taking place. The intention is that pedestrians are focussed towards the most appropriate crossing point and this location is highlighted to drivers. In our experience, once the courtesy crossings become established, drivers will usually give priority to pedestrians. However, my colleague agrees that there is often a ‘bedding in’ period when a new feature is added to the highway that all road users must adjust to. Whilst courtesy crossings are not appropriate in all circumstances, they have proven to be beneficial to safety in low speed environments with regular pedestrian activity such as St Stephens Street, Norwich. We are sorry that you have experienced an unpleasant altercation at the Station Road courtesy crossing, but hope the above explains the rationale behind the scheme. My colleague is confident that once the crossings become established, these types of incidents will be rare and the crossings will improve road safety in Sheringham town centre. However, as with all highway schemes, we will continue to monitor the safety performance of this location and will take further action as necessary. I do hope that this information helps and that there is no repeat of this. If you have any further questions or concerns, do please let me know. Norfolk County Council is committed to excellent customer service and we would appreciate your feedback on how we dealt with your complaint. Your feedback will help us identify areas where we can improve and where we have done well. Regards Stuart Hellingsworth, Customer Complaints Case Manager, Norfolk County Council, Customer Service & Communication, 01603 495736’

Reply to Mrs Doreen Hale

Sheringham Medical Practice would like to offer sincere apologies to any patients who had to queue for a short while outside the Health Centre in inclement weather conditions whilst waiting for their flu jabs on Wednesday 16 October. Unfortunately, like many other practices nationally, we were affected by an unexpected delay in the delivery of our flu vaccine stocks from the manufacturer. This halved the number of vaccines that we received in time for our first clinic on Wednesday 9 October and led to a difficult decision over whether to reschedule one of the clinics until later in the month or to invite a smaller number of patients to the first clinic and a larger number to the second. In the interests of ensuring our “at risk” patients were given protection against influenza as soon as possible, we made the decision to go ahead on the dates originally planned but with a larger clinic on the second date. As a result, the second clinic was exceptionally busy, with approximately 1,500 patients being vaccinated on the day, and this in turn meant that there were periods when queues unfortunately did occur. As the weather was poor on that day we can appreciate that this caused discomfort and distress to some of our patients, for which we are extremely sorry. We take the provision of quality services very seriously and strive to deliver a high standard of patient care, but sometimes even the best laid plans can be affected by unforeseen consequences. As always, the organisation of this year’s clinics will be reviewed by the team prior to planning our campaign for 2014 and any necessary learning points will be taken into consideration for next year. Apologies once again to any patients who were affected. Yours sincerely Sheringham Medical Practic

Dear Margaret,

Readers can see that Mr Hellingsworth comments of 'once the courtesy crossings become established, drivers will usually give priority to pedestrians. However, my colleague agrees that there is often a ‘bedding in’ period when a new feature is added to the highway that all road users must adjust to’ and ‘the contrasting strips across the carriageway are ‘courtesy crossings’. They do not denote priority to pedestrians but are there to highlight to all road users a location where regular crossing activity is taking place’. Has Mr Hellingsworth thought how visitors to our town of Sheringham are going to be aware of this quotation? There will be an accident waiting between a car and a pedestrian! This will result in a 'test case' between the two parties ie who is in the wrong? Readers may be aware of a fatal death at Luton Airport, (LLAOL) reported in a recent EDP. The crossings were built and did not conform to regulations for crossings on normal roads. Judge Philip Bartle QC said ''In his view there was a foreseeable risk of injury or death to pedestrians, and the seriousness is that Luton Airport exposed 8 million visitors a year to that risk. The Health and Safety Executive took Luton Airport (LLAOL) to court - they were found guilty after a six week trail of failing to ensure the safety of people using the airport and contravening health and safety regulations. They were fined £75 000 with £197 595 costs. Norfolk County Council, I believe, have left themselves open for prosecution. I just hope that no one has an accident on one of these new crossings in Sheringham. From my own observations in Station Road and Station Approach, pedestrians seem to cross the road where they deem it fit to do so. In my view what a waste of public money plus they are now placing pedestrians at risk. Richard May Sheringham 23

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

FULL HOUSE FOR ‘GARDENERS WORLD’ TALK

The talk by Nick Hamilton on the years when his father, Geoff Hamilton, presented Gardeners’ World attracted a large audience to the meeting of the Sheringham Horticultural Society on 17 October.

Over 150 people came to the Lighthouse Community Church which confirmed the continuing affection for Geoff Hamilton and the interest in hearing Nick’s stories of the filming at Barnsdale. Nick was able to convey his father’s love of gardening and his mission to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with as many people as possible with personal anecdotes and photographs which brought back many happy memories to us all.

SHERINGHAM'S BID TO BECOME A FAIRTRADE TOWN As part of Sheringham's bid to become a Fairtrade Town we will be calling at all the shops to ask if Fairtrade goods are sold or used. This will be in the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing you. The Steering Committee for Sheringham to become a Fairtrade Town 01263 823134

The accommodation and facilities at the Lighthouse were excellent and contributed enormously to the success of the evening and the Society would like to thank Pastor Bryan and members of his church who helped us to stage an event which provided so many people with such an interesting and entertaining evening.

The Society’s final meeting in 2013 will be held in St Joseph’s Parish Centre on Thursday 21 November when there will be demonstrations on how to make Christmas decorations with material from the garden. The meeting will start at 7.30pm and is free to members with a charge of £2 for visitors. Bob Wilkinson

Gresham’s Prep gets on their marks for the annual Cross Country Championships

The eighth annual Cross Country Championships was hosted at Gresham’s in Holt on 4 October where the school welcomed over 600 children to compete in what has become one of the schools biggest sporting events.

The Cross Country this year attracted 31 schools, predominately primary schools, from across Norfolk. Despite the threat of rain throughout the morning, spirits were not dampened and the races were all run on schedule. What a wonderful sight it was to see so many children lined up on the starting line and watch them race across the course which took them over some of Gresham’s rugby fields and through the woods where they all emerged in the hope of securing a good finishing time for their schools.

Richard Brearley, Deputy Headmaster of the Prep School and organiser of the Cross Country event said, "I am delighted to see so many schools competing at the Championships. This year saw a record entry of 636 competitors from 31 schools. The main thing is that everyone completed the course which is impressive and says a lot about the determination and enthusiasm of the children competing. There were some fine individual performances by a number of runners and all are to be congratulated on their efforts. Perhaps the stand out performance on the day was by Ziggy Lampton from Colchester High School who won the Under 11 Boys race in a new record time of six minutes."

Gresham’s organises the Cross Country to allow local schools to come and take advantage of the superb facilities and compete in a very well organised, competitive local event. It has continued to grow in popularity seeing numbers rise steadily each year. Four races make up the Cross Country Championships, an under 9 and under 11 race for boys and girls.

Sports Development Director for Gresham’s, Steve Adams said “We are delighted to be able to offer a sporting event which attracts so many local schools across Norfolk offering children the chance to compete against like-minded athletes. The school is committed to providing access to its facilities through a variety of initiatives which have also included the settingup of a Tennis Club in Holt, Activity Camps and various sporting events held throughout the year.” The results of this year’s Cross Country Championships were:

BRISTON DAY CARE CENTRE GETS A ROCKET!

Well, more than one actually, because Briston's local seafood retailer, the Norfolk Larder, is putting on a Grand Firework display on Tuesday 5 November, with free entry to all, but asking that visitors make a small donation during the festivities to the Briston Day Care Centre.

The show opens at 5.30pm - the Bonfire will be lit at 6pm, and the Firework display itself starts at 6.30pm. There will be refreshments and other attractions there as well, so it will be a great night out for the whole family.

At last year's event, hundreds of people turned up to watch the amazing display, and it is hoped even more will come along to the Norfolk Larder, which is in Mill Road, Briston, and join in this year's fun. The owners of the Norfolk Larder, Dave and Margaret Chambers, say that as local people support them so well, they like to give something back to the Village, and of course the collection will benefit the wonderful work of the Briston Day Care Centre, which provides a good lunch, entertainment, and trips out for local Senior Citizens.

For more details on the Display, please telephone 01263 862991, and for information of the Day Care Centre, telephone them on 01263 861120 on a Monday or Thursday, between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

Local sportsman opens new remedial and sports massage clinic in Gresham

A new remedial and sports massage clinic has been launched in North Norfolk to help sporting and non-sporting people alike. John Battrick, a keen sportsman and runner himself, is the face behind the new venture, having qualified with a Diploma in Remedial Massage from the Northern Institute of Massage in Manchester this summer.

“Massage is a really effective way to relieve everything from stress and anxiety to back pain and muscle strains” he says. “Having suffered from my fair share of sporting injuries over the years, it’s a great feeling knowing that I have the skills to help people avoid injury and treat problems if they occur.”

John, who won the North Norfolk Beach Runners’ recent 8.9 mile Chase the Train race, practises in Gresham, near Cromer, and can be contacted on 07854 087754.
