Emily’s Head Shave
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Earlier this month seventeen year old Emily Phillips shaved all of her hair off to raise money for the Little Princess Trust.
The Trust uses the hair for wigs for children going through cancer treatment – Emily said ‘ I am raising money for them as it costs £350 to make one wig. I did it because quite simply I love my own hair and the thought of a child having to suffer cancer and hair loss as well is awful. This is something I can do, anyone can do, it's a personal sacrifice, yet at the same time all it has cost me is hair. Something simple, which I took for granted but I know this child won't. The support from my school and the local community has been outstanding and absolutely great. We have raised over £1000, and there is still more to come in. I have a Virgin Money Giving Page which is open for a few more weeks yet: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/ showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=Emilysheadshave
I want to urge anyone who can give seven inches of hair or more to do so, it's not much hair and yet you will make a profound difference to a young child suffering hair loss’. Our photo was taken just after the head shave L to R Head of Sheringham High School Mr Roderick, Emily, Mr Cooke Head of Sheringham 6th Form which Emily attends.

2012 - What will it be like this year?
White and her "dwarfs" will also entertain everyone and Roy Davenport with his magic will prove that "seeing is not believing". An LED parade will leave Station Road Car Park at about 6.30pm for the Town Clock led(sorry about the pun) by pupils from Sheringham Primary School and containing members of the Community Choir and the Salvation Army Band who will lead the Carol singing at the Town Clock immediately before the Switch On at 7.00pm.This will be performed by Roy Davenport and Snow White and anyone else he can magic up. The Town's shops will be open late and you will be able to enjoy their decorations, window displays and wares. Hog Roast, hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts will also be available in addition to refreshments provided by the Town's own wide selection of "hostelries". It would be wonderful if you would dress-up for the evening and with some form of illumination join in the parade. But whatever you do please come and enjoy yourself. ( if you wish to have a stall in the street please contact Mike Crowe 01263 821354)

of lots of board and picture books, fabulous fiction by top authors like David Walliams, Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Liz Pichon (Tom Gates) and marvellous pop up non fiction about space, sport, the human body and much more. Reading matters! A recent Institute of Education study found that children who read for pleasure made more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling between the ages of 10 and 16 than those who rarely read. Children who were read to regularly by their parents at age 5 performed better in all three tests at age 16 than those who were not helped in this way, although by the age of 10 children reading for pleasure was more vital to their progress than their parents’ education levels. Let us help you find your next great book. Visit ww.whonextguide.com to look at or ask advice from a library assistant. Come and see us soon at Sheringham Library, New Road. Sheringham Independent 381 November 30th 2013
December is a very busy time for us at the Grove and we have lots of great events during the leadup to Christmas. The highlight is our Carol evening - with miced pies and lashings of mulled wine - under the stars around our Christmas tree on 23rd December at 6pm. We’re being joined by the Cantamus Community Choir from Thorpe Market and we hope it will be a fantastic evening for the whole town to get together as the festive season really gets underway. The Carol evening will be free entry, though we will be collecting for the RNLI to help them with the great work that they do in Cromer, Sheringham and around the country.
We still have just a few slots available for Christmas dinner parties too - although they are selling out extremely quickly – a couple of tables left for our sumptuous Christmas Day lunch, and of course we are open for dinner every night and the best Sunday lunch in Norfolk!
This is a great recipe that features on our Autumn menu here at the Grove, and is proving extremely popular. It blends a traditional French cooking technique with some superb local produce, including some gorgous granola from Crush Foods and the
Icarus Hines’ Norfolk lamb with Dauphinoise potatoes, purple sprouting and beetroot
best lamb from Icarus Hines; is really scrummy and perfect for this time of year.
Very best wishes from us all at The Grove.
Charlie
THE LAMB Four French-trimmed three-bone racks of Norfolk lamb – any butcher will trim and clean the bones ready for the oven. For the lamb crust – 1 cup of hazlenut and chocolate Crush granola (made locally in Norfolk.) A handful of mint, handful of basil leaves, Norfolk rapeseed honey for a beautifully pure flavour - and helps the crust stay on the meat… Maldon Sea Salt, black pepper, cold pressed Crush rapeseed oil. ♦ Seal the lamb in a hot pan until all sides have a golden glaze. ♦ Leave to stand, baste the top fat with honey, and add herbs, granola and seasoning (blended or chopped very finely) to the honey glaze. ♦ Drizzle with a little cold pressed rapeseed oil and cook in a medium heat oven (gas mark 5) for between 20 and 30 minutes until pink. ♦ Cook the purple sprouting tips in seasoned boiling water for 45 minutes; drain and serve.
DAUPHINOISE POTATOES 5 large potato lovers (Norfolk tatties) 500ml double cream 2 crushed garlic cloves
Carols at the Grove The Christmas holidays will get underway in traditional style at the Grove with an open-air carol evening featuring one of the region’s top singing groups.
The Cantamus Community Choir will be leading the singing on 23rd December at 6pm, fortified by the finest homemade mince pies and lashings of mulled wine.
Proceedings will get underway with an opening prayer from the rector of St. Giles in Norwich – and former Cromer celebrity – Father Darren Thornton, and it is hoped that as many people as possible turn up to sing the Christmas festival in.
The evening is free to attend and all donations on the night will go directly to the RNLI.
Charlie Hodson, Executive Chef at the Grove, who is now a volunteer on RNLI Cromer’s team is keen to support Cromer’s local charities. He said, “This is another example of how The Grove can support our local community”. He added, “This is the first of several exciting events planned for 2014, which will benefit RNLI Cromer as well as other charities”. Sheringham Independent 381 November 30th 2013
2 pinches nutmeg Maldon sea salt, black pepper
■ Pre-heat oven to gas mark three. Make sure your oven dish is evenly coated with butter. Peel five large potatoes – we get ours direct from the garden – thinly slice with a sharp knife or mandolin. ■ Mix up 500ml of double cream, a couple of pinches of nutmeg, a good amount of seasoning and two crushed garlic cloves. ■ Toss the potatoes in your cream mix, place everything into your gratin dish – layering the slices of potato – and bake for approximately an hour to 90 minutes, pressing down with a wooden spoon every 15 minutes. ■ The potatoes will come out lovely and golden brown; leave to stand for at least ten minutes. Simple garden beetroot jus. ■ Boil your beetroots for two to threee hours and, while hot, peel them – wear rubber gloves of course! Dice up with a shallot, a medium-sized red onion and a knob of unsalted butter. ■ Cook on a medium heat until soft, then add 50ml of red wine, a dash of white wine vinegar, Maldon sea salt and black pepper and 75ml of chicken stock. ■ Remove from the heat, puree with a stick blender until smooth, return to the heat for 10 minutes and finish with a pinch of caster sugar to give some sweet balance to the acidity.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS Tuesday 17 December
CROMER HIGH SCHOOL, NORWICH ROAD, CROMER
1pm – 3.15pm and 4.30pm – 7pm
This year’s Must-Have Gift is blood
Call for people to come forward and give this year’s must-have gift NHS Blood and Transplant is calling for people to step forward and donate blood in the run up to Christmas so patients whose lives depend on blood transfusions get what they need over the festive period.
November through to the New Year is typically a challenging time for blood stocks. Hospitals in England and North Wales will need up to half a million units of blood to see them through the period. However, Christmas shopping, the party season, and the general rush together with the extended public holidays mean taking the time to donate can slip off people’s to-do list, putting pressure on blood stocks.
the gift they need to stay alive this Christmas.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant said “People are probably busy getting ready for Christmas, but we’re asking them to find time to donate blood. For thousands of patients across the country, this year’s Must-Have Christmas gift is blood and we’re asking you to help. Donating doesn’t cost a penny and saves lives, meaning many more children and adults can spend precious time with their families over Christmas.
“This is always an extremely challenging time of year for us as we need to make sure that hospitals are supplied with the blood they need to treat patients over the Christmas holidays. We need donors from all blood groups, but we especially need O Rh negative and B Rh negative to come forward. Whether you’re a regular blood, or have never donated before, you can make a real difference. So please make an appointment now or go along to an local session to save lives.”
If you’re 17 and over and in general good health, visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23 to find a session in England or North Wales near you to go and give blood.

As a unit of blood only has a shelf life of 35 days it’s crucial that enough donors come forward to donate over the next few weeks so patients get
Open Gate at The Patch
Sheringham Community Smallholding - known affectionately as The Patch - is issuing an open invitation to visit the site on Saturday 14 December between 10am and 1pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity to visit this amazing project, to see the exciting developments that have taken place over the last year and to learn about its plans for the future.
Besides an assortment of vegetable plots, flower gardens and polytunnels, The Patch looks after a flock of 25 hens, a mixture of ex-battery rescues, old breeds and Goldlines, which is particularly popular with visiting children. Anyone looking for an extra special Christmas gift could take out a sponsorship of one (or more!) of the hens. Sponsorship forms are available on the website, or for further information, contact Matthew Smith on 01263 820520 or email pm@the-patch.co.uk.
“The Patch is an award-winning community project, which recently won the Food and Farming section award in the 2013 Bernard Matthews Youth Awards,” says Matthew Smith, Director of The Patch and Business Manager of Sheringham Woodfields School. “Pupils from the schools in Sheringham have a particularly strong connection with the project, spending time there learning what is involved in food production and caring for livestock. However, we appreciate help from anyone who wishes to play a part in its upkeep, and look forward to welcoming members of the community to our ‘Open Gate’ event. Those people who haven’t visited The Patch before should be prepared to be amazed!”
The Patch is located on the site of Sheringham High School and Sheringham Woodfields School, Holt Road, Sheringham NR26 8ND.
Progress can be followed on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ThePatchSheringham) and on Twitter (@ThePatchSCSP).

Living as husband and wife Written by Margaret Smith – Solicitor with Hayes & Storr The recent unreported case of Swetenham –v- Walkley has considered the definitions of “as husband and wife” and “same household” in relation to financial claims against the estate of a deceased person by their cohabitant.
It also dealt with the question of whether it is the internal or external nature of the relationship that is more important. The background law to this is that, in order to bring a successful claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975, a claimant must show both that he/she and the deceased were living in the same household and that they were cohabiting ‘as husband and wife’.
The facts behind the case make interesting reading and the judge put great emphasis on the deceased’s eccentricity and obsessive behaviour; sadly, there is not space here to give full details! The parties had been together for over 30 years, were committed to each other and accepted externally to be partners. There were elements of the practicalities of their relationship that were unusual; however, they
appeared to the outside world to be ‘husband and wife’. This meant that they were held to have passed both the ‘internal’ and the ‘external’ tests.
The leading case on the subject has long been Re Watson where the judge emphasised the importance of the external appearance of the relationship and said that ‘one should not ignore the multifarious nature of the marital relationship;’ which, in this case, meant that it was not relevant that the couple had always slept in separate bedrooms and that they each owned a house.
In two other cases the internal nature of the relationship was emphasised. In Churchill –v- Roach the elements of permanence, mutual support as well as ‘a degree of voluntary restraint on personal freedom’ and ‘community of resources’ were stated. In Fitzpatrick –v- Sterling Housing ‘mutual interdependence, the sharing of lives and of caring and… support’ were given as important.
In Southern Housing –v- Nutting the judge required both the internal ‘mutual lifetime commitment’ and the external ‘that the relationship must be openly and unequivocally displayed to the world.’
This approach continues in Swetenham; one must first satisfy the internal test and then cross-check with the external test.

There was an excellent turnout for the meeting on 5 November at the Links Hotel in West Runton. 31 members, one guest and two speakers enjoyed a splendid lunch, conviviality and an interesting and entertaining talk on the subject of The Mardler.
The Mardler is a talking newspaper for the visually-impaired, servicing North Norfolk and Broadland, based mainly on content from the North Norfolk News. Jack Chapman and Jolyon Booth have been involved in the production for many years and were able to tell us first-hand about the establishment of the service and its development over the years. There were also a number of amusing anecdotes from Jack’s many visits to the listeners.

At the end of the talk and after some questions and answers, there was an impromptu statement of commendation from John Bolton-Maggs who has been a recipient of The Mardler for 20 years. He was unstinting in his praise for the work which Jack, Jolyon and the rest of the team perform. This was followed by a formal vote of thanks proposed by Nick Oliver.
Anyone who is interested in either receiving The Mardler or becoming a volunteer can contact them on 01603 279060.
As an additional event this month, some members enjoyed an excursion arranged by Kelling Probus Club to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. We are grateful to Ken Murray from the Kelling Club for organising the trip.
The December meeting will be our Christmas lunch, to which members may bring lady guests and other friends. This is proving particularly popular this year; 62 places had been booked by 10 November.
The club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.
Garden Friends, Frost & Winter Colour…
There’s a definite chill in the air and winter is fast approaching. Berries are abundant this year thanks to the favourable spring; however the leaves are late to fall this year and now is the time to tidy up the garden before the worst of the winter weather arrives. Be especially aware of hibernating toads, newts and hedgehogs, particularly the latter as numbers continue to decline in hedgehog populations. If you discover a hedgehog then you certainly are lucky for it to have chosen your garden to settle down in for the winter – rather there than beside a busy road! While the word “hardy” is often thrown around in haste, frost can be particularly disastrous for tender plants – small, potted plants can be transferred to the greenhouse or conservatory but some larger plants such as tree ferns can be packed with straw and wrapped to protect the crown and fronds. Gardens need never be dull this time of year. There’s plenty of colour to be found on trees such as Sorbus, Contoneaster, Viburnum and Holly. Why not bring the colour indoors with your own arrangements from the garden, or a Hyacinth vase? With less planning, instant colour can be had from typical bedding plants such as Cyclamen and Winter Pansies. A wide variety of grasses can add texture and movement to your garden, particularly with winter dew and cobwebs dangling between them. A popular local Norfolk variety is Carex elata ‘Aurea Bowles’ Golden Sedge, discovered by botanist EA Bowles in East Anglia.

Sheringham church makes drama out of a service The Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham will be launching into Advent with an alternative drama production instead of a morning service on Sunday 1 December.
a Nativity play – but not as you know it!”
The drama group was formed when the Lighthouse building opened in September, and performed a hilarious but relevant sketch for the church’s grand opening on September 21. Their aim is to give “food for thought” in a way that is entertaining, and often humourous.
The Lighthouse Drama Group will present the 4-act drama, called #relevantadvent, on Advent Sunday at 10.15am. It is hoped that the event will appeal to those people who wouldn’t normally come to church on a Sunday morning.
“We wanted to provide a modern take on the traditional nativity story” said organiser Helen Ward, “And to show that the Christmas message is as relevant today as it was over 2000 years ago. This will be

Poppy Line Explores Running to Cromer Earlier this month North Norfolk Railway managing director Hugh Harkett confirmed that the Poppy Line is exploring the possibilities of running to Cromer.
“We’ve been discussing it with franchise holder Greater Anglia (part of Abellio) and with the Department for Transport,” said Mr Harkett. “The plan is for a Sunday service in summer, with the NNR running five steam-hauled trains from Cromer to Holt, and Greater Anglia running from Cromer to Norwich. Trains would have to be ‘top and tailed’ with a steam locomotive at each end, as Cromer has no run-round facility.”
Only engines fitted with the mainline Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) would be allowed to run to Cromer, and the railway will need three locos with this equipment. The 1947-built George Stephenson, currently on the NNR, is already fitted with TPWS, and plans to fit two other recently restored engines are in hand. Trains will also have to include any other modifications that may be required by the Office of Rail Regulation.
“Greater Anglia is very supportive,” said Mr Harkett. “We are now waiting for comments on our proposals from the Department for Transport and the ORR.”

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
‘Pensthorpe: Past, Present and Future’ was the title of a very lively and informative talk given by Gary Mills at our November meeting. Gary’s knowledge of the 600 acre site was extensive, and his enthusiasm infectious. After detailing the original Saxon village and highlighting parts of the original buildings remaining today, Gary explained how land was landscaped in more recent times to create the lakes, and the initiatives used on their Conservation Grade farm to provide the natural habitat so essential for our wildlife and birds. We glimpsed stunning woodlands, the three gardens, and learnt of the fish life in the River Wensum, as well as the wonderful variety of birds and waders who inhabit or visit Pensthorpe throughout the year. Gary brought us up-to-date with current projects, including the exciting ‘hatching’ programmes for Great Crane and other chicks carried out in collaboration with conservationists throughout the UK and abroad. Our final stop was WildRootz, the adventure playground, Pensthorpe’s way of introducing children to wildlife and its conservation.
‘Xmas Magic’ is the theme for Jacqui Aldous’ demonstration when we next meet on Thursday, 5 December. If you would like to join us, please come along at 7pm for 7.30pm to St Andrew’s Church, Sheringham, or for more information give Shirley a call on 01263 825059.
SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY 2014 PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
The programme of talks and other events for 2014 is now being finalised. An interesting line up of speakers have agreed to come to Sheringham including Jim Bacon, the well known BBC weatherman, Trevor Harrison from South Creake Nurseries who will advise about propagating unusual plants, Ian Roofe who is a member of the Radio Norfolk Gardening Team and Ben Potterton from Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery who will talk about his horticultural travels. There will also Paperwhite Narcissi be the usual shows and we will be ‘at home’ to defend the cup in the annual quiz with members of the Cromer and Hoveton Societies.
Other events are being planned and full details and dates will be made available as soon as possible. In the meantime the Committee would like to wish all members a very Happy Christmas and an interesting New Year which starts with the AGM on Thursday, 16 January. Update on Highway issues around Sheringham from Brian Hannah - Norfolk County Member for Sheringham Footpath and Highway obstruction by Landowners
On numerous occasions I have, when walking around the town, seen hedges and trees endangering road users and pedestrians by encroaching onto footpaths and roads.
This has been addressed at some locations in town, with the Highways Officers implementing the Highways Act 1990 section 154.
This has been achieved by Highways Officers writing to the landowners pointing out their responsibility and asking them to trim back trees and/or hedges to the property boundary line within 14 days so the full width of the highway is available for use. With this, advice is also given when to carry out maintenance to avoid disturbing wildlife. This has been successfully done in some cases which is a huge benefit to pedestrians and road users alike.
New Highway work done in the High Street
I have had many comments on the work done in the High Street by Highways - some positive and much negative. This work had been in the programme for some time and was accepted by the Town Council and myself. I have asked Highways to give me an update on the use of these
YOUR LOCAL GARAGE DOOR MAN LTD
shared space crossing points which they have let me have, they are below:
‘In the past, pedestrians and users of motor vehicles were kept apart. Crossing points, such as zebras or pelican crossings let pedestrians across roads, road users were strictly segregated with kerbs, pavements, white lines and other markings etc.
In the installed shared spaces in Sheringham the approach is different. The idea is to mix, relying on eye-contact and mutual respect to keep people alert to each other. Without strict demarcation it is not clear who has the right of way, so people naturally behave with consideration to others, slowing down, being more careful and courteous. As a result motorists become more observant and responsible. Everyone has a more pleasant experience and there are fewer accidents.
The principle is that drivers would stop and let pedestrians cross out of courtesy and not that they are legally bound to.’
For me this comes down to a shared and personal responsibility for us all in thinking about others, perhaps something we need to do a little more of?

Help for Babies’ Development
What do babies get out of it? Other than sheer delight and excitement, the classes have been designed to help babies develop in the following areas: Language, Physical movement, Socialising and Emotions.
Lisa Stickells has just moved back to Norfolk from London and is launching Baby Sensory in this area (initially Cromer and North Walsham). "I have a 10 month old son (Stanley) who I took to Baby Sensory in Bromley from birth," commented Lisa. "He absolutely loved it (as did I).
Free Taster Sessions will take place at Cromer on Tuesday 10th December, 10-11am, Northrepps Village Hall, School Lane, NR27 0LB and North Walsham on Friday 6th December, 10-11am, The Atrium, Spenser Avenue, NR28 9HZ.
I completed my training last month and will be running free taster sessions in December and starting the first Baby Sensory programme in January 2014."
Baby Sensory and its benefits: The Baby Sensory programme has been designed specifically for babies from birth to 13 months. It offers a complete approach to learning and development with rich and varied sensory activities enabling babies to develop in every possible way!
Each week is different: With 40 themed lesson plans, babies can discover a magical underwater world, explore
a tropical jungle, journey in to Space and have fun at our Baby Athletics! All these activities are excellent for developing physical, social, emotional, and language skills. They also encourage co-ordination, awareness of the world, a love of music and the concentration so needed for further development.

Ambulance service recruits just seven additional paramedics in the last year
The net total of new paramedics recruited this year by the East of England Ambulance Service Trust was just seven - despite the trust pledging 224 more.
New figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the local ambulance service hired 44 qualified paramedics as well as three specialist paramedics in the first nine months of the year - but 40 paramedics left the service between January and September. The net total of just seven falls significantly short of the 231 promised.
North Norfolk Labour Party's Act on Ambulances campaigners have criticised the trust for freezing the recruitment process last year in a bid to make savings, and for still failing to fulfil promises of additional ambulances on the road.
parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said “These figures are very disappointing. We are never going to get the additional double staffed ambulances if we are not able to build up paramedic numbers – it is absolutely crazy. We accept there is not a quick fix to get the necessary qualified staff, but how much time does this trust need to become fit for purpose?”
She added: "We cannot continue to run an ambulance service where the existing staff are doing overtime, it is leaving the frontline staff frustrated with the organisation."
Also this month it was revealed the interim Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust could have been entitled to a £490,000 payout as part of the Government's recent reorganisation of the NHS. It was later revealed that as CEO

Local Nissan dealership Crayford and Abbs recently came first out of 32 dealers to win a trip of a lifetime to Abu Dhabi. They were the only East Anglian dealer to attend the four day holiday with the MD and Directors of Nissan.
During the trip Kevin Abbs said he ‘was entertained by driving the sand dunes in Dubai, visiting and eating at the world's tallest building, Burj Dubai and playing golf at the Colin Montgomerie Championship course culminating in a two day pass in the Red Bull hospitality suite which included a presentation by Mark Webber prior to the Sunday’s final race’.
In total there were ten winners from Great Britain who each enjoyed business class flights and a luxury holiday of a life time.

However Mrs Burke also criticised the Government for allowing this to happen: "Does our local MP, the health minister, think that the electorate is naïve enough to believe that they weren’t aware of the implications of disbanding the primary trusts? By passing the buck MPs are taking us for fools. This is money that should have been reinvested back into the NHS to deal with the impending winter crisis in A&E."

Andrew Morgan was still in employment within the NHS he was not entitled to the money, but reports suggest the total amount of payouts for executives of the former Patient Care Trust could have been £1.2m. This prompted much criticism from across the political spectrum.

Sheringham and District RAF Association
On Tuesday 18 October, members of the Sheringham and District Branch attended a buffet luncheon at Wolterton Hall. The luncheon was, as usual, enjoyed in the beautiful surroundings of the Hall with a splendid buffet and the opportunity for old friendships to be renewed and new ones made. Kenneth Macnish, the newly-elected Chairman of the Branch, welcomed those attending and thanked Lady Walpole for her hospitality.
The Committee wishes to thank all those who helped in collecting during Wings Week and also the members of the public who contributed. This year a sum of £4,231.65 was collected to which was added a further £1,000 from Branch funds giving a total of £5,231.65.
A programme of events for 2014 will shortly be published, we are hoping to have one event per month, taking place regularly on the third Thursday of the month wherever possible.
The Association welcomes new members, membership is open to all serving and former members of the RAF, and if you have never served in the RAF but wish to offer your support, you are welcome to join as an Associate member, assist in fund-raising, or attend one of the many events. Please contact either Kenneth Macnish on 01263 519684 or our Secretary Christine Martin on 01263 734977.
North Norfolk Photographic Society
Adrian Stone came from Peterborough on 6 November to talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society about ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. Not the Dickens ones, but the cities of Bath (UK) and Claremont (USA). He had visited the Club before as a judge of members’ images - it was the club’s turn to look at his!
Adrian’s photographs were used to show the contrast between Somerset's ancient Bath and Claremont - a town just outside Los Angeles.
Bath, steeped in history with the Roman Baths, the Abbey and its fine old buildings is all a bit different from the modern city in California, dominated as it is by its highly equipped Colleges of learning. Adrian was especially impressed by the gardens, lovingly tended and generously watered in what originally was the parched desert-like land in that part of the USA.
North Norfolk Photographic Society meets on alternate Wednesdays at the Loades Hall - behind Holt Methodist Church. Visitors are most welcome. Further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judy Knights on 01263 825418.

SKIES OVER BRISTON ABLAZE WITH COLOUR!
After a very wet start to the day, the weather kindly brightened up beautifully for the Grand Firework display at Briston on 5 November, when Dave and Margaret Chambers, owners of 'The Norfolk Larder', and their staff put on a truly magnificent free event for local residents. It was even bigger and better than last year’s wonderful effort, with a huge bonfire, and a spectacular display that not only lit up the night sky but could be seen from miles around. Other attractions included a hot dog stall, a shooting gallery, and a roundabout ride for the children.
Donation buckets were soon filled by happy families attending the super show, and these raised over £450 for the local Briston Day Care Centre. Indeed, some of the Day Care regulars came along in their minibus and got a front row view of the whole spectacle. Mr. Chambers said afterwards that the people of Briston had always supported his retail seafood business very well, and this was his way of giving something back to the village people, and helping the Day Care Centre at the same time, and the smiling faces of the generous crowd as they left for home showed that they had all had a wonderful evening!
Sheringham History Group
On a dark and dreary evening we met at the Mo museum to hear 'The Tales of a Sheringham GP'. The talk by Dr. Richard May was funny, informative and entertaining. However, it wasn't a talk about historical facts, figures and dates or statistics.
Dr. May gave us a flavour of what it was like to train as a doctor before the advent of modern medicines. For example, he brought a metal toolbox with an early 'tool' used for delivering babies. Was that before the invention of rubber gloves?
Born in Sheringham, Richard May couldn't decide whether to become a Doctor or a Vet. A school master asked him which one would he rather visit at 3am - a bedroom or a pigsty? He decided to become a doctor. Later, after all his studies, training and working on wards in London and Yarmouth Dr. May was asked if he would like to return to Sheringham as the local GP. He did and it was a "joy" from then on. This joy came across in the talk as every other sentence was followed by a laugh from those in attendance. Most enjoyable! Could there be a book in the future to add to Sheringham's rich history?
Please note: There will not be a meeting at The Mo in December, our next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th Jan 2014, the second Wednesday of the month. The first Wednesday is New Year's Day. The talk in January will be presented by Kay Reeve entitled "Wonders of the Waves" about The Scira Wind Farm. The Sheringham History Group are graciously allowed to meet within the spaces of the Wind Farm office at The Mo. Members free, visitors £1.
Rosa has now produced her latest quiz sheet - this time a seasonal one on the theme of pantomimes. The closing date for entries is 28 February 2014 with a prize of a £20 shopping voucher (in the event of a tie, a draw will take place to determine the winner).
Proceeds of the quiz are to be shared between EACH Quidenham Children`s Hospice and St. Andrew`s Church Funds.
Whether you do the quiz sheet on your own, or as a family, or with a group of friends, it is an ideal activity for everyone of all ages over the Christmas holidays. Why not send some out with your Christmas cards??!
Copies can be obtained from Sheringham Library or by post from ‘Pantomime Quiz’, St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8SA. Please enclose a large SAE and cheque made out to St. Andrew`s Ways & Means Committee Sheringham Independent 381 November 30th 2013

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Normally, at this time of year, we receive fewer requests to take kittens into care, but this has not been the case this year. We have had nine kittens in from one household since our last article. The five youngest came in with their mother and there are also another two adult cats on the waiting list. Fortunately, because the kittens are young, we can place them with our home fosterers thereby allowing us to keep the cat pens free for the older cats waiting to come in. Although some come into care because there is a change in their family’s circumstances, so many have come in because their owners discover they cannot find homes for them and cannot afford to look after them properly. In these instances we always offer help with neutering the mother cat to prevent the problem occurring again.
We still have lots of kittens of various ages, sex and colour in care. All will have had a health check at the vets and their first vaccination. If old enough they will also have been micro chipped and had their second vaccination (if not we pay for this to be done at the appropriate time). Older kittens may also have been neutered if the vets consider them to be big enough. Although we would love them all to be offered a new home, we would emphasise that they cannot be homed as presents at Christmas time, as introducing a young kitten to a new home when so much is happening there would not be fair to it.
As Christmas is fast approaching, we were delighted to see so many of our friends and supporters at the Christmas Sale on 16 November. We raised £1,259.18 for the cats in care and enjoyed catching up with news of some of our previous residents (including some lovely photographs). Congratulations to Mrs Rivett who won first prize in the raffle, a big thank you to all our volunteers for their hard work making the event so successful and many thanks also to the generous people who donated

A Furry Tail with a Happy Ever After
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club took part in the recent sponsored dog walk in aid of FAITH rescue centre raising a tail wagging £726.
June Phipps, Animal Magic’s Fairy Dogmother – our voluntary charity liaison officer, encouraged club members, friends and family to join forces and attend the fundraising event. The work of a Fairy Dogmother is never done and June waved her Animal Magic wand and granted a wish to one very lucky dog called Diesel. This lovely boy who’d been in the care of FAITH since May found his forever home with a friend of her family who’d taken part in the walk. Diesel has settled into his new home well and thanks to his Fairy Dogmother, his wish for a happy ever after really did come true.

Make sure you can vote in next year’s elections Annual Canvass of Electors
North Norfolk residents are being urged not to lose their right to vote in next year’s elections. Every year a revised Electoral Roll is compiled by the Electoral Registration Office for North Norfolk. This is to ensure the electoral register is as up-to-date as possible ahead of next year’s elections, which will include the European Parliamentary election.
All residents should have received their annual canvass electoral registration forms through the post during the last two weeks of October. A form needs to be returned for all properties, whether occupied or not, including empty properties, second homes and holiday lets.
Suzanne Taylor, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Electoral Services Manager, said “Registering to vote is quick and simple. All you have to do is update the annual canvass form with details of everyone who lives in the household and is eligible to vote. If the details on the form are those of a previous resident they should just be crossed off and your own details added. It only takes a few minutes to secure your right to vote.’’
Canvass forms should be returned immediately in the pre-paid envelope provided. The earlier the forms are returned, the lower the cost of the process to the council tax payer. If householders don’t return their forms by the
Appeal for a Peal!
middle of November, a final reminder form will be delivered to those households from which no electoral canvass forms have been received.
It is a legal duty to register and individuals are breaking the law if they do not, facing a fine of up to £1,000. Credit reference agencies use the Electoral Roll as proof of residence, so anyone not registering may find it difficult to obtain a bank account, loan, credit card or mobile phone contract.
Don’t lose your right to vote - remember to register for your place on the Electoral Roll. For more information see www.northnorfolk.org/council/7260.asp or contact NNDC on 01263 516401.
Southrepps Chorale is delighted that their next concert with Norfolk Brass will be in aid of the Cromer Bells Restoration Project.
The concert at Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 30 November at 7.30pm will see the Chorale, conducted by Musical Director Stephen Richards, accompanied by brass, guitar, percussion and their regular accompanist David Hillery, in music as diverse as ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, ‘Panis Angelicus’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. There will also be seasonal music and refreshments as we move into Advent and towards Christmas.
The Cromer Bells Project is to replace 140-year-old fittings around the six bells in the parish church, and to cast two additional bells, at a cost of £70,000.
Maureen Gardiner, bellringer and Steeple-Keeper for the town centre church, said “Being forced to raise £70,000 was a bit of a shock. We have had tremendous support but we are looking for new ways to raise the money and are really grateful to the Southrepps Chorale for giving the proceeds of this concert at the Parish Church to the Restoration Project.”
The community choir, Southrepps Chorale, is just two years old and continues to provide its members with a host of surprises emerging from rehearsals each Tuesday night. The excitement of learning to sing, and to sing with others, continues to delight all concerned. And of course they love to showcase their new-found skills to the wider community through performing.
Tickets, £7.50 (£2.50 under 16s) are on sale at Cromer’s Victorian Tearooms, KK Hardware, Merchants’ Place and Southrepps Post Office.

At a recent Awards Ceremony held by Greater Anglia Railways Cromer Station was named as the most improved station.
This was due to the hard work carried out by the Station Adopters John Dennis and Carole Blake keeping the station clean and tidy by emptying bins, sweeping up rubbish and cleaning the windows in the shelter. Not any easy task sometimes. Stan Foxall from Cromer in Bloom tends the planters on the platform. Earlier this year three more planters from Norwich station were added to help make the station more attractive for locals and well as visitors. There are more improvements in planned for next year. As well as the Certificate, a Garden Voucher for £25 was received. This has been used for bulbs and Spring bedding in the new planters. Homebase Cromer kindly donated the huge amount of compost needed to fill these planters together with Canary Palms for a real seaside look. Cromer Station is certainly looking much better these days!
Holt and District Probus Club
On 7 November at The Feathers Hotel, Holt and District Probus Club was given a talk by Colin Kemp on the Royal British Legion Today, especially relevant just a few days before Remembrance Sunday and thankfully, all were wearing their poppies!
Colin who lives in High Kelling has been active with the Royal British Legion for some years a couple of years ago he was Chairman of the Norfolk Branch. In existence for over 90 years, the Legion works to four headline aims - welfare, comradeship, representation and remembrance. Most visible, perhaps, is the annual Poppy Day collection and the Festival of Remembrance. The sale of poppies accounts for a large part of the Legion’s income - donations, corporate support and bequests also contribute. Not so visible to the majority is the welfare service that is provided to any Serviceman - who only has to have served for seven days to be entitled to help if he or she needs it.
VEHICLE DISMANTLERS & END OF LIFE VEHICLE RECYCLING CENTRE
Last year the Charity spent £90,000,000 helping 165,000 people. This can be anything from changing a lock in someone’s home to providing care homes such as Halsey House in Cromer and much else besides.
Members came away with a far better understanding of the range of the Legion’s activities and Colin was given a well-deserved vote of thanks.
The Probus Club meets for lunch and to hear a talk at the Feathers Hotel in Holt on the first Thursday of each month. New members will be made very welcome and anyone interested is invited to get in touch with Chairman John Evans on 01263 713159. Do give it a try with no obligation. CROMER CHRISTMAS SHOW IT'S A CHRISTMAS CRACKER OF A SHOW The Cromer Christmas Show at the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier is the best way to start the Yule Tide Holidays packed full of comedy, music, song and dance all wrapped up with that extra Christmas sparkle it will bring a smile to your face and set your feet tapping.
Starring Norfolk’s own Olly Day a very funny and talented performer and firmly established as one of East Anglia’s finest ‘all round entertainers’.
This is Olly’s fifth year performing at the end of the pier in the famous Cromer Christmas Show and he has been busy finding lots of new gags and helping to write the sketches. Olly is delighted to be back saying “It’s my home from home, I love coming to Cromer and appearing at the Pavilion Theatre”
Appearing with Olly is Eddie Bushel, the Cromer based singer who has gained a considerable following with his performances in clubs and entertainment venues across the County. Joining them for the first time in Cromer are Martyn James and Jane Watkins.
Comedian and Illusionist Martyn James has been performing for some
twenty-five years working both in the UK and overseas.
A member of the Magic Circle Martyn’s award-winning magic and illusions have won him much praise with audiences. Singer Jane Watkins has been working at holiday centres and in pantomime. She has just returned from a tour of Holland and Belgium performing as Dusty Springfield, and Cilla Black in the ‘British Pop Invasion’ show.
Of course no variety show would be complete without its dancers and the Cromer Christmas Show is no exception. Hard working and very talented the dancers bring that extra sparkle and glamour and energy to the stage.
The producers Openwide Coastal have once again created a show that will delight audiences of all ages. Devisor, Director and Choreographer Di Cooke is once again the visionary behind the show and along with Musical Director Nigel Hogg has created a show that will delight audiences of all ages. Cromer Christmas Show 30th November to 29th December.

Dear Margaret,
I don`t know if you want another comment about the new dropped kerb crossings in Sheringham but I would like to say Thank you to those who provided them. As a wheelchair pusher, I am very glad to see the new lowered kerbs and crossing places in the town. It will be a real asset to us. I had given up bringing my wheelchair bound parent into the town as I was unable to find easy places to cross the road. Well done to those who decided to provide these crossing places for us. Yours sincerely A Shannock (RW)
Dear Margaret,
Ref Tesco, Colin Millen I am hearing you bro! Sort of! Let us who said we didn’t want them here stand our ground and don’t use them. Just because they are here doesn’t mean they are here to stay. Yours sincerely A Member of the ‘No Tesco’ campaign (name and address supplied)
Dear Margaret,
We write in reply to Avril’s letter in your 2 November issue which showed the understandable confusion some people are experiencing regarding District Council policy. The point of the reception works happening at the District Council in Cromer is to save taxpayers around £30,000 per year after they are completed, by reducing the number of staff required to manage transactions. However this message has clearly not been explained well enough by the District Council so hopefully this explanation will provide the full picture. We continue to try to find savings in these difficult times to balance the budget and freeze council tax. Kind regards Cllrs Rhodri Oliver and Richard Shepherd
Dear Margaret,
You know who you are, but I don’t! So a big thank you to the kind person who found and posted an important letter I lost on Sunday evening 3 November. It arrived safely on 5 November. Joan Garrett, Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
We would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers at Sheringham RNLI Lifeboat house shop for their hard work this year. You will be pleased to hear that we have taken £9374.24 which is well up on last year. The boxes took £4350.37, another increase on last season.
Also many thanks to all the Lifeboat house personnel for their continued support. This was altogether a very successful season. Thank you Wendy Austin and Mary Blyth
