Sheringham’s Christmas lights went live on Friday 6th December to brighten up the town in the run up to Christmas. A white star on the clock tower is the foacl point. But it might not have happened if not for the Sheringham Carnival committee with Sheringham Town Councilsupport. The Carnival committe had voted to take over the organising and installation of the Christmas lights that had previously been organised by the Open Door Community Art Group for three years.

Cromer Pier Damaged Christmas Show temporarily suspended

The record surge tides that hit Britain and in particular the coast of Norfolk & Suffolk severely damaged Cromer Pier.

With one of the best ever Christmas Shows only just opened less than a week before, the damage to the pier and the Pavilion Theatre has forced the show’s cancellation at least for a few days.

The worst ever surge tide damaged a number of businesses small and large right around the coast as well as requiring the evacuation of substantial numbers of homeowners from the worst-hit areas.

Sheringham Carnival 2014

The Carnival Committee would like to offer everyone the chance to enter a competition to find a photo which best sums up Sheringham.

The prize will be to have this photo as the front cover of the Carnival Programme for 2014. Starting date is now, closing date is 8 March 2014.

It is to be hoped that the damage, which included many decking planks being ripped from the pier, can be fixed quickly so that the Christmas Show can continue, hopefully even before you read this story.

Val and John Laker, on behalf of East Anglian Air Ambulance, would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made our eighth EAAA dinner, which was held at the Constantia Cottage Restaurant East Runton on Thursday 21 November, so successful.

Thank you to the media who advertised the event, the Constantia staff, those who supplied raffle prizes and especially those who came to and supported the dinner. A big thanks also to Graham Jones who was our auctioneer for the evening.

Everyone had an enjoyable time. East Anglian Air Ambulance was presented with a cheque for £400. Watch out for the announcement of our ninth dinner in 2014.

All the colour of Snow White

The cast of this year’s pantomime have arrived at Sheringham Little Theatre in a blaze of colour.

As costumes are fitted and rehearsals for Snow White begin, familiar faces are being welcomed back and new performers being introduced to the coastal venue.

Russel said “This is my fourth year playing the pantomime dame at Sheringham so it feels like coming home for Christmas!

Written by West End star Killian Donnelly, who is currently starring in The Commitments, and has appeared in blockbuster film Les Miserables alongside Russell Crowe, it looks set to be a lively production.

Pantomime director Simon Thompson said Killian’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk was so successful last year that the theatre was keen to work with him again.

“Killian really understands pantomime – the tradition, the use of dialogue and what people are looking for in terms of pace,” he said. “His writing appeals to young people because it is contemporary but at the same time it has the right balance for adults too.”

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display

All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2014 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display, and organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute to come to Cromer.

This year’s display has been specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, representing the poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914.

“We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond.

“The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

3pm FUN RUN Work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog along Cromer Prom – or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! North Norfolk Beach Runners are organising their annual One Mile Fun Run as a curtain-raiser for the firework display at 5pm.

"This year, 1 January is a Wednesday, so linger longer and enjoy the evening. Cafés, pubs and restaurants will also be open, so there'll be plenty of places to get a cuppa or something stronger."

There will also be teas and coffees in the Church with mulled wine outside Cromer Museum.

Raising over £3,000 for local good causes – and funding the following year’s display – the annual display attracts up to 8,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day. "This year’s show will be as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever to produce effects that will light up the sea in a v ariety of colours, but this, as always, is all weather dependent.”

Starting from the pier forecourt at 3pm, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.

Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks.

Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (7pm approx) although Tides Restaurant will be open from 10am – 4pm.

The Two Santas –

A Christmas Short Story from Sheringham’s Roger Chamberlain

The Tagman Press (Norwich) has published Sheringham author Roger Chamberlain’s second Christmas short story, The Two Santas, as an e-book. The Two Santas (price £0.99) is on Amazon for Kindle readers and will soon be available on Kobo and Apple iBooks.

The Two Santas is set in the fictional small North Norfolk town of Hummingsby and introduces Hetty Hummer, Roger Chamberlain’s trusty mobility scooter.

The plot: Hummingsby is gyrating with seasonal activity due to television advertisers cajoling the townsfolk into a frenzy of late Christmas shopping.

Unconcerned, the town’s two resident Santas stare at each other from the safety of their command posts on opposite sides of the market place.

Their blood-red festive uniforms do little to hide their true feelings and, like modern day gladiators, they are eager to launch themselves into a duel from which only one can possibly emerge victorious. As the first shot is fired the unlikeliest of referees enters the arena. The battle has begun!

In 2006 Roger Chamberlain gave up full time work following a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, which he had probably had by then for over 30 years. He soon discovered his creative ‘gene’ and began writing. To date, he has written more than 28 very different stories. He has replaced his love of sailing, walking, climbing and conservation with ‘active’ writing.

Earlier this year The Tagman Press published Roger’s The Theatre of Limited Facilities in paperback and e-book formats. The book is a fictionalised account of his early childhood, growing up in Sheringham, surrounded by actors from The Little Theatre.

A Message for Freddie, a non-fiction short story of his childhood, is also available in paperback and e-book formats. Last year’s Christmas short story Jimmy & Riddlesworth’s Christmas Pickle can be found at all e-book stores.

Norman Lamb MP opened Sheringham Youth Zone to the delight of the youngsters who attended.

He paid respect to Julie Chalmers who saw the need for somewhere safe for Sheringham’s youngsters to have fun and also gave thanks to the team of volunteers. He was joined

by Snow White from Sheringham’s Little Theatre.

After six months of getting to opening night the words "Mr Lamb this is Snow White" was never an introduction Julie Chalmers had imagined!

Also present was Mr McGinn former Youth Club founder and Simon Nellis, Manager of Sheringham Tesco's who presented the youngsters with a £500 cheque.

The youth zone will be meeting every Friday 6-8pm at Sheringham Community Centre.

Norfolk MPs and Lib Dem councillors condemn council proposal to cut funding for student transport in Norfolk

Norfolk Members of Parliament have expressed their concern at the proposed changes to post 16 school transport. In a letter to the Leader of Norfolk County Council, George Nobbs, all nine Norfolk MPs urged the Leader of NCC to look at other ways to achieve savings rather than increasing the cost of transport passes. Norfolk County Council is currently conducting a consultation into the proposed changes. The consultation closed on 12 December 2013.

Chairman John Dunsire welcomed 25 members and our guest speaker, David North, to lunch at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on Thursday 21 November.

David has been with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust for some 10 years and his delightful presentation was entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Cleyâ&#x20AC;?. He described Cley Marshes as an outstanding European Nature Reserve, soon to expand by the acquisition of the adjacent 143 acres. This is a major environmental project and will include the creation of an education facility behind the existing Visitor Centre. The total cost of ÂŁ2.6 million has been met largely by generous public support which, together with Heritage Lottery Funding, should allow the project to proceed next year.

He eloquently described the features of Cley Marshes which make them unique in their natural beauty, and his slide show highlighted the skies, the ever-changing colours, the sounds and the migratory wildlife for all to see. He drew attention to the importance of the plentiful supply of fresh water, originating on

the Cromer Ridge and flowing from natural springs into the man-made catchwater drains. Appropriate environmental management of the marshes is essential for the preservation of the wild and natural character of the marshes, and includes adjustment of water levels, reed cutting, cattle grazing, and, perhaps above all, â&#x20AC;&#x153;managingâ&#x20AC;? people.

Teachers become students in charity Grade Oneathon

Musical director Emma Dale throws down ‘very, very tough’ gauntlet

Children at Beeston Hall School, West Runton have turned the tables on their teachers and taken over lessons. Luckily this educational revolution is all in a good cause, though some teachers are finding it tough coming to terms with being a pupil again.

It’s all about the Grade Oneathon, the brain child of Emma Dale, the school’s Director of Music. She challenged her colleagues to pass their Grade One in a musical instrument they hadn’t played before. Where possible, they were to be prepared for their exam by pupils.

There’s another twist: the 26 teachers taking up the challenge had just ten weeks to go from zero to hero. Since they are raising money for About with Friends, a Cromer-based charity that works to support people with learning difficulties in North Norfolk, there’s more than face-saving at stake.

Head teacher Robin Gainher says, “Each day sees a steady stream of teachers going to and from the Music School as they attend lessons and practise their scales and arpeggios. For many this is a first foray into the world of music.”

Being Head hasn’t protected Robin from the challenge- he’s been tasked with trying to learn the piano - “Believe me, it is very, very tough.”

Eleven year old Maddie is Robin’s ‘teacher’.

She says “He’s making steady progress, even though his only previous musical experience was playing the triangle.”

Robin admits that, perhaps against his

expectations, the Grade Oneathon is proving to be a surprisingly enjoyable experience. “It’s strange to be a pupil again after so many years, but we are lucky at Beeston Hall to have so many wonderful, patient music teachers – adults and pupils alike.”

Through the generous sponsorship of parents, friends and families the gallant teachers hope to raise £1,000 for About with Friends. “The Grade Oneathon is very appropriate, since we are planning visits, here at Beeston and at their centre in Cromer, where children from the school and the charity can meet to share music.

It’s Christmas

Today we’ll dress our Christmas tree With little gifts and fairy lights, It will be a sight to see When all lit up on Christmas night.

Children’s faces will glow with joy, When they each receive a special toy, We will watch the Queen on our TV, Then sit down to a scrumptious tea.

With activities from painting, crafting, pottery and knitting for Aid Africa to learning about how to use a defibrillator, splitting our sides with laughter at British comedy greats and been enthralled but aghast at the life and times of Horatio Nelson; we have all been challenged to try and learn new things.

There has been much laughter with nights such as our Glam and Casino night, where local Cromer model Ellie Burton put us through our paces with the ‘best catwalk dash’ and recycled little black dresses. Followed up by canapés and a whirl at the casino tables, great enjoyment was had by all. Theatre trips locally and in Norwich have been attended and members have also travelled and visited; York, Blenheim Palace, The National Memorial Arboretum, Stratford on Avon, How Hill and Holkham Hall for the Belinda Sassoon gowns exhibition.

However, it has not all been about pleasure for just ourselves. Working in the community we had great fun with Sherriff Jesse Jane and the children of Sheringham who turned up for the Children’s Fancy dress competition. With punk Queens and hungry caterpillars and Knights of the Realm it was a memorable afternoon for us all. As part of National WI campaigns to support our high streets we have also continued to hold our local produce and craft fairs enabling local producers to provide goods with reduced shopping miles and provide another attraction to bring shoppers onto our lively high street. Through our speakers we have also been able to support local and national charities. Our last act of the WI year was to proudly march in the Sheringham Remembrance Parade and honour the men and women who have given us so much through their death in service.

And so we look forward to another action packed year. After much merriment at our Christmas Dinner at the Burlington we look to making a difference in the community at our open meeting with Self Harm UK.

Rachel Welch will be coming to guide us in understanding this difficult and traumatic issue for families and individuals. As well as help to give support to sufferers and identify the causes and symptoms to recognise. Please come along and find out more if you are involved with young people and feel you need to understand more about this issue which is troubling so many of our youngsters.

The year then moves on to a whole range of activities from scuba diving to craft to a games show night, making garden sculptures, vintage hats, the Geographical society and hostage negotiations. As well as, all the usual community activities, trips and friendship that WI has to offer all of the time.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

With Christmas fast approaching it is time to reflect on the past year and to mention some of the cats that we have looked after.

With nearly 300 cats being cared for by the branch this year and over 210 having been found new homes, our fosterers have been kept very busy. Two cats which came into care as strays were reunited with their owners because they had been chipped, five cats were returned to their owners and sadly we lost six cats because they had serious health problems. Much to our delight several of our long term residents have been re-homed as have all of the older cats, apart from one. Max, the oldest cat still in care is, however, not available for re-homing as he is a “golden oldie” cared for by Pauline, one of our fosterers, and at nearly 19 years old is very happy to retain his position as a Cats’ Protection cat but also continues to enjoy his freedom and home comforts.

“vet check”, are vaccinated, micro chipped and in some instances blood tested for FIV/FELV. With several cats also needing operations, X rays, etc, our fosterers are familiar faces at the vets. For example, Caramel, a dear little kitten, who required cage rest after damaging one of her legs, and Mickey and Jim two of the older cats who needed dentals.

Fortunately, fundraising has gone quite well despite raising less money at two of our major events. As well as car boot sales, street collections, bingo and table top sales we have also been selling some of our goods on line and these sales are proving very successful.

Our final fund raising events for this year, a table top sale and a Quiz night, will have taken place by the time you read this. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved during the year, helping cats in their own special way.

We are delighted to have opened the doors to our brand new practice on 4th December at 8.30 am.

The Theatre has its own piped gas supply and is equipped to a very high standard.

There is plenty of Office Space for our administrative team and a comfy staff room for us to relax in at coffee time.

In the Shop we are stocking well-known brands such as James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange and Royal Canin. As well we have a good selection of toys, leads, collars and other pet supplies and necessary accesories.

With Christmas now only a few days away we need to remember the cats in our care and make sure that everything is safe for them. Securing the Christmas Tree (in case your kitten decides to climb it), making sure the decorations are shatterproof and the cat does not eat anything it should not (eg tinsel, chocolate) will ensure that everyone has a very Happy Christmas and large emergency vet bills will be avoided.

Autumn notes from the Commons

As summer gave way to autumn the transition was hardly noticeable as in the main the days continued sunny and relatively warm. A Brimstone butterfly was seen (1st Sept) and during the next couple of days a further nine species were recorded (Speckled Wood, Peacock, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Large White, Meadow Brown, Common Blue, Small Copper and Purple Hairstreak), also a Common Wasp’s nest was found (3rd Sept) that had been ‘dug out’ by a Badger. The remaining wasps were desperately trying to repair the damaged nest and to move the pupa.

Mark Clements, who regularly records wildlife on the Commons found a Wryneck and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth (5th Sept). The Wryneck is a small brown bird related to woodpeckers and a migrant, although it formerly bred in the UK. The Wryneck was spotted later (Sept 7th) feeding on the ground, where most likely, it was finding ants, its principle food source. In the spring Mark had found a Devil’s-bit Scabious Sawfly, but it could have been one of two species and to be certain which it was it would be necessary to find larvae. A larva was found (14th Sept) and the species was identified as Abia sericera. This year’s record was the first known for the site in over 25 years. A Dock Bug was noted by Mark (15th Sept) and the first Pink-footed Geese of the season passed over the Common (20th Sept) also the next evening (21st Sept) a Noctule Bat was observed hunting. The following evening (22nd Sept) an adult Hobby was watched coming in from the west, circling and then heading off to the northwest. Another unusual visitor was Birches a female Widgeon, on the pond (25th Sept). A late Hornet was seen to fly into a spider’s web (27th Sept) and was soon killed and wrapped up by the Garden Spider. A walk with West Runton Beavers proved eventful as

a large female Slow-worm was seen crossing a path. This gave the Beavers a wonderful ‘up-close’ view of the reptile, which made there day.

Red Admiral The relatively mild weather continued into October and over 40 flowering plants were spotted still in bloom (1st Oct). Fly Agaric, the well-known white-spotted red-capped toadstool, was also in evidence as were a number of dragonflies, such as the Common Darter, Migrant Hawker and Southern Hawker. A few days later (5th Oct), a large hoverfly, Arctophila superbiens, was spotted.

This species is a light tawny-brown bumblebee mimic, which apart from a small isolated population in Norfolk is more generally encountered in the north and west of Britain. Another scarce, but formally regular winter visitor, the Jack Snipe, was flushed from the Back Bog (11th Oct). The following day (12/10) there was a noticeable influx of Robins, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds and Redwings plus about 20 Bramblings and some Redpolls. Another regular recorder of wildlife over the Commons is Peter Beard and he had the lucky spot of a Peregrine Falcon overflying (13th Oct). As the days passed the number of migrants crossing the Commons increased, with Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Fieldfare, Common Buzzard, Common Snipe, Brambling and Red-legged Partridge being noted by Mark. A large number of Rooks had also visited the Commons, principally to feed on the abundant harvest of acorns. Mark had up to five Common Buzzards (17th Oct) and was fortunate to find a rarity - an Arctic Redpoll. Peter also during the same day had 10 Crossbills flying over. A Noctule Bat again put in an appearance (19th Oct) as did two Chiffchaffs the next day (20th Oct) and another rarity was seen, the Great White Egret, which circled the Common before heading off east (23rd Oct). This was the second record this year of the large heron-sized bird, which are being seen throughout the country more frequently nowadays, in fact, two pairs bred in Somerset this year. Mark also recorded a Woodcock, nine Brambling and a Marsh Tit the same day. A Dock Bug was still active (26th Oct) and Mark reported Goldcrest and Treecreeper (29th Oct) as well as Comma and Red Admiral butterflies and a Common Darter (30th Oct).

With no severe frosts having occurred, the trees were still green with little of the autumn golds, yellows and browns showing as we entered November. A Water Rail was heard calling (3rd Nov) and a Common Buzzard passed over the heath the following day (4th Nov). There was a large westerly movement of Fieldfares (5th Nov) and a Grey Wagtail and two Pied Wagtails were spotted by Mark. A beautiful Short-eared Owl flew up the central valley mire (7th Nov), but despite several attempts to hunt the bird was continually harassed by local Rooks, Magpies and a Sparrowhawk. Eventually it gave up and flew inland. Another westerly movement was noted (8th Nov), this time, by Starlings, with small flocks passing through all day. Mark recorded a flock of 16 Lapwings (12th Nov) heading west as well as a Water Rail calling from the pond’s outflow stream. A Roe Deer was calling (13th Nov) and a Weasel was found dead. It has been over 10 years since a Weasel was recorded and the last one in 2002 was noted swimming in the pond. Siskins were seen

by Mark (16th Nov) and a Woodcock and Common Snipe were flushed from the marsh (21st Nov). Five Cormorants headed east and a Nuthatch was heard calling by Mark the same day. A small flock of 10 Brambling heading south and a common snipe were also spotted by Mark (29th Nov). At the end of the month the weather has still been fairly benign and although the autumn colours have finally arrived many of the trees are still carrying a lot of leaves, which, especially with the birches have given the countryside a beautiful golden glow.

He flew from the UK to Katmandu then on to the notoriously short air strip at Lukla, high in the Himalayas of Nepal. From there he trekked through the pine forests and over long suspension bridges spanning deep gorges, gradually climbing higher into the more bleak mountainous regions.

Council calls for guarantee on ‘crucial’ Coasthopper service

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has called for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the Coasthopper bus service that links isolated towns across the district throughout the year.

In a motion approved at a meeting of NNDC Full Council last month councillors agreed to urge the County Council not to cut the service, and that if there were any proposals for changes to the service there should be full and meaningful consultations with residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk before any changes could be implemented.

The Coasthopper bus service, currently run by Norfolk Green, carried 545,523 passengers in 2012, with an estimated increase to over 570,000 this year. Norfolk Green has said that any cuts in County Council funding over the next two years would force them to reduce the level of service, most especially in the winter.

Police keep up pressure on rave organisers

Police have vowed to keep up the pressure on organisers of illegal raves after officers prevented an event in Thorpe St Andrew last month.

Twelve people were arrested and sound equipment seized after officers were alerted to suspicious activity at Pinebanks on Saturday 16 November. More than 50 people arrived at the site shortly afterwards becoming hostile towards police.

Residents, businesses and landowners are urged to be vigilant and to call police immediately if they witness similar activity.

Chief Superintendent Nick Davison, County Policing Commander, said "The action taken falls in line with our zero-tolerance approach to these events and its important people

understand the reasons for this action.

"These events are illegal, happen in uncontrolled environments and therefore pose a risk to the safety of people attending.

This was evidenced at two events disrupted in the summer where a young woman was airlifted to hospital after collapsing through taking a cocktail of drugs at a rave near Thetford while a man suffered head injuries after falling from a speaker rig onto farm machinery at a rave near North Walsham.

The consequences are potentially fatal and as the police we cannot be seen to standby and not make any intervention.

"These events, sometimes referred to as ‘free parties’, also impact on the wider community – people often drive to and from raves and with large numbers this can cause

significant disruption in local communities.

This is without the serious anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance, criminal damage and environmental impact...someone has to clean up after the event.

"We will continue to work pro-actively to disrupt events and take positive and appropriate action where necessary.”

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society had another visit from the Doctor on 27 November.

Not the Doctor with the sonic screwdriver, but Doctor Kevin Elsby.

Kevin had visited the club twice before to show his beautiful photos - this time he was judging the Society’s prints.

There were two competitions and the rules require that a member who wishes to enter the ‘Open’ section (subject - own choice) must first enter the section with a specified subject, which on Stickleback Lunch

this occasion was Natural History - which just happens to be something on which Dr Elsby specialises for his own photography.

In spite of some expectation of severe criticism, 27 members entered the fray and four were awarded full marks, the winner being Paul Keates with ‘Stickleback Lunch’ - which chiefly featured the Kingfisher enjoying it!

The Open section also drew a quality entry, five receiving maximum marks, and the winner being Judy Knights with ‘Evening in the Languedoc’ - a landscape of one of those lovely, peaceful French canals with an avenue of trees running beside it.

North Norfolk Photographic Society’s members were pleased to receive such a high compliment from such an eminent photographer. Thanks were given on behalf of the Society by

A Bit Like The Archers, but with Music!

On Friday 15 November, a packed Copeman Centre at Briston thrilled to the sounds of talented organist Elizabeth Harrison and her Roland digital organ. Her wonderful programme included such gems as the 'Thunder and Lightning Polka' by Strauss, a Bert Kaempfert-styled 'Swinging Safari', Del Shannon's 60's hit 'Runaway', the theme to the former TV series 'Howard's Way', and Robert Farnon's fast and furious 'Peanut Polka'. She also used an add-on box connected to the organ that reproduced the fabulous sounds of the Blackpool Tower Wurlitzer organ, and played some catchy dance medleys that had everyone's toes tapping.

But in addition to playing the organ all over the UK, Elizabeth also runs a small farm, collects old tractors, drives HGV vehicles, and runs a housekeeping and gardening business too - and she had us all in fits

UK Government turns down free EU aid as demand soars for Cromer foodbanks In a week when it was revealed that the UK Government is refusing to use free EU aid for foodbanks, Norfolk Euro MP Richard Howitt saw that demand for help with food was soaring in Cromer and district.

The Labour MEP dropped in to help with the Sheringham launch of a new national campaign this weekend to collect food donations from the public outside Tesco stores in the run up to Christmas.

He met generous shoppers and hard-working volunteers to see for himself how the service helps local people who are hungry.

Richard Howitt MEP said “The foodbank in Cromer and District has five distribution centres and is supported by over 100 regular volunteers. It opened in August 2012 and continues to see demand rising, with 1,496 people fed this year up to 1 November.

The rising need is fuelled by delays to benefits, the recent benefit changes and low income, with more than 50 per cent of those collecting food affected by delays in their benefits. I’ve told the European Parliament that half a million people in Britain are relying on food aid to fend off starvation, with a 230 per cent rise in numbers in my own East of England constituency.”

“And having campaigned against Britain’s opposition to drawing down EU monies for Britain’s food banks, I deeply regret that it has rejected taking any part of the £22 million in the original plan to help food banks, literally taking food out of the mouths of the hungry. Charities in the UK are pleading with us in Europe to take this aid, yet David Cameron and the British Conservatives, for ideological reasons, are intent on denying them anything more than the crumbs off the table.”

Dear Margaret,

May I through your letters page draw people's attention to the need to drive with less speed and more care now the dark evenings are here.

On Friday 29 November one of our cats – Mr Mog was hit by a car which was travelling at very high speed along Curtis Lane from Beeston Common.

Mog, who was not normally out after dark, had horrific injuries and his body was dragged for 40 feet up the road because clearly the car was unable to stop. I know these facts to be true because I measured the line of white fur which looked like it had been velcroed to the road.

Mog was wearing a collar with his name and phone number attached but the person who killed him did not have the decency to phone us. There are no pavements along Curtis Lane or over Beeston Common and people are obliged to walk in the road.

Mog was a wonderful and dearly loved part of our family and we are heartbroken. If this sort of reckless driving continues to be the norm by some irresponsible people (and believe me this was not a one off) then next time it could be a human being who is fatally struck down.

The person who did this and who drives so dangerously fast will know who they are and I hope in future they will take responsibility for their actions and keep within the speed limit. Thank you.

I am a Post Graduate student studying for an MSc in Environmental Management (Business) with Sheffield Hallam University , and I live in Dersingham, near Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

I am conducting some research for my final dissertation research project , so that I can finally produce a 15000 word report/ dissertation and I am researching the potential social, ecological , environmental and economical impacts ( both positive and negative ) of Wave Energy Conversion Technology, when compared to Offshore Wind Turbine technology.

I am particularly looking at a case study which compares Scira Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Turbine Array with Wave Energy Conversion Technology.

I have attached a link below for a 10 question survey and would like to request that people in the local community please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire.

There are only 10 questions and will literally take a couple of minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous, and also will only be used for my research purposes with the University.

The University has a strict ethics code and code of conduct for carrying out such surveys and I have strictly followed this process.

Dear Margaret,

What a delight it was to arrive in Sheringham on Sunday and to go shopping at Tescos for my groceries for the week. Since I have had my flat, I have brought all provisions with me from Northamptonshire. Not any more – I can now get quality vegetables and other food locally.

My only disappointment is that Tescos does not have a coffee shop.

I long for a decent coffee shop in Sheringham town. A coffee shop which opens early so I can have a drink after my morning swim, which does not have plastic table cloths, hard chairs in semi darkness, smell of stale fat, make lattes from a sachet and charge £2.30, wrought iron chairs in a wind tunnel or scones from cellophane. So many times I have driven to Holt for a drinkable latte in comfortable and pleasing surroundings. Costa Coffee - where are you?

Dear Margaret,

While pleased to receive approval and support for the ‘Campaign for Self-Government’ (TSI, 30.11.13), I would like to make it clear that it is not just anti-Tesco. It is anti all supermarkets and the business model which they and other enterprises pursue. Why? Because this business model does not work! For example, it turns people against each other and it contains the seeds of its own destruction and, possibly, ours! - since it requires for ‘its success’ ever increasing growth which, in a finite world, is a physical impossibility.

So, I say once again – before matters begin to deteriorate even further on this planet! Let’s stop just complaining about the injustices of the present system, with its methods of separation, hierarchy and domination, and, let’s start also thinking and talking about democratically transforming it into a more mature way of organising human affairs (perhaps based on ‘interconnected, mutually aided, self-managed communities’, further details of which can be obtained by going to the internet and googling, “ideas of change for a more advanced society.”)

So, come on, you dreamers, both young and old, rich and poor, of a happier and more secure existence for all people everywhere! The introduction of this more elevated and enlightened civilisation could begin right here in North Norfolk, given its greater understanding and, then, the political will!

Dear Margaret,

I paid a visit to our new Tesco's this afternoon and was greeted by very kind ladies who offered me a leaflet asking if I would donate to the local food bank. I cannot understand what this free food bank is all about as the Government are giving child credits to all parents today. When I was growing up in a tiny flat in London there were 10 of us, 8 children and my parents. We slept four in a bed two top and two at the bottom and my bedside cabinet was an orange box.

My mother was disabled with only one hand and one of my brothers suffered from epilepsy. There were no benefits in those days and if you didn't work you didn't eat as simple as that.

When the lights went out in our flat and there was no money until Friday we lit the candles. I did my homework in candle light and gained a grammar school place. Also we had no calculators to use either or mobile phones - talking of mobile phones how many of these people who turn up for the free food have one? Most of them I would say. I guess we have all noticed the amount of bingo sites that are now advertised on our TV sets - these companies must be doing good business otherwise they would not be able to afford the advertising.

Is this where most of the benefit money is going?

In days gone by there wasn't the morning after tablets or advice on family planning that is available free to one and all today so I say if you cannot afford to feed your family then don't have them.

Britain has become far too soft today on many out there who think the tax payers owe them a living.

Dear Margaret,

We’re now in the 21st century and dogs still foul our pavements as they did in the middle ages – the difference is that the people who walk dogs today belong to a society which is better educated and more civilised than ever before.

Each innovation introduced to curb this disgusting behaviour fails to address the underlying problem, which is that dog owners believe they have a right to use the streets and parks as a toilet for their animals.

Medical evidence proves the dangers to children caused by coming into contact with dog faeces : poop scooping only removes the physical evidence, not the remaining traces.

The proposal to appoint voluntary dog wardens is the politicians’ way of avoiding a very contentious issue. Penalising dog owners carries political repercussions : dog owners are voters and many of our politicians are dog walkers. To claim that a voluntary warden’s position could be ‘non-confrontational’ is either naïve or purposely misleading.

Dog owners need to be educated and made aware of the problems caused by dog mess and the potential dangers, or the dog licence fee needs to be re-introduced to cover the cost of employing official dog wardens who could issue on-the-spot fines to irresponsible dog owners.

It is with regret that we have to inform our loyal supporters of the closure of Sheringham Country Market at the end of 2013, after almost 20 years of trading.

We started in July 1994, setting up shop in the small coffee bar at the Little Theatre and trading every Thursday morning. A year or so later a change in policy at the Little Theatre saw us move to the St John Ambulance Hall in Wyndham Street, decamping every summer for a couple of weeks to the garden of the Lobster Inn opposite.

The fall off in customer numbers, the age of our producers and the lack of new younger producers, found us reducing our trading times to twice a month.

Then this summer, the sale of the St John Ambulance Hall saw us, at the kind invitation of the landlord Graham, selling our wares in the Lobster Inn garden, under the awning in good weather and latterly in the small room inside.

Now the time has come for us to call it a day here in Sheringham, but all is not lost, you may find one or two of us trading at the weekly Friday market in Holt.
