SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club have recently made two presentations of money. The first presentation was to Nelson’s Journey for £450, this is in addition to the £1,250 we donated last year, making a total of £1,700. The second presentation was to the East Anglian Air Ambulance for £450.

In addition to the above the Sheringham & Cromer Lions have, over the past 12 months, made a donation of £1,250 to the Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood victims. We have also purchased a bed and accessories for a two year old child who has several medical problems and also a some accessories for a special pushchair for a three year old girl who has a rare medical

problem. Both children are within the Clubs local area.

All the money raised in order for us to make the above donations was collected by means of street collections, Tombola stall at various events, Quiz & Chips Night etc. Please note that all money raised is used to support those in need etc., nothing is deducted for Administration purposes. If you think you would like to help why not come along to one of our meetings and see what happens. Just call Lion Hazel on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@ btinternet.com for more information.

It’s not all work, though, we do have an active

Social side. We recently had an evening visit to the Norwich Aviation Museum which we all found very interesting. Earlier this year we visited the Poppyland Brewery in Cromer and in September we are going to see the Summer Show at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre preceded by a meal.

We are holding a Quiz & Chips Night at The Morley Club, Cromer Road, Sheringham on Saturday 11th October at 7pm at £8 per person (includes hot supper). Just call the above number for tickets.

Bumper set of A-Level results for Gresham’s

Gresham’s School in Holt scored another impressive set of A-Level results today with a 98.5% pass rate and 88.5% of students gaining A*-Cs despite a fall nationally in results. A number of students achieved outstanding results which will see them take up places at some of the country’s top universities.

Douglas Robb, Headmaster-Elect, said “I am delighted with this year’s A-Level and AS results which is testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and their teachers. A-Levels are challenging and in this competitive market it is very pleasing to see such impressive results. I would like to wish our leavers the very best of luck in their future careers.”

Overall, 67.8% of all A-Levels were graded at A*-B. In addition, a large number of departments scored particularly well with 100% of students achieving A* to B in Chinese, Electronics, Japanese, Further Mathematics and Spanish, and over 90% scored A*-B in Art, Chemistry, Mathematics and Photography. In addition, 70.8% of AS students achieved A-C. Our students’ success is reflected in the diverse range of universities and colleges they will go on to study at Clare Mawson from Edgefield who including: University of Oxford, gained three A* and one A Durham University, Bristol University, King’s College, London and University of Leeds.

Simon Kinder, Deputy Head – Teaching and Learning, said “These are fantastic results across the board, especially when combined with our

outstanding IB Diploma results last month. It is inspiring to see our students unlocking their academic potential and achieving results that open up so many exciting pathways. The dedication of our staff and the hard work and enthusiasm of our students continue to make Gresham’s a stimulating and vibrant academic community.”

The school is delighted with these results and in particular would like to congratulate:

Clare Mawson

Miramar Carnival Dog Show

Many thanks to everyone that attended our Dog show on 2nd August. We were delighted with the turn out.

The have-a-go agility course proved very popular as did temptation alley with the temptations being just too tasty for most of the participants, while Gismo took a shine to the toys!

Winners included Phoebe for the fastest run down temptation alley and best sausage catcher.

Bracken and Merlin, two lovely labs won best rescues with their life stories. Best veteran was won by the oldest attendant at the show - Rioja.

Best ASBO was awarded to Snoop for running riot in the agility arena and the overall winner went to Gismo who kept us entertained throughout the afternoon with his fantastic personality! He then continued to entertain us with his new toy! Well done Gismo.

Indie won the fastest sit while best six legs was won by Poppy and her owner.

Hope to see you all next year!

Searching for Relatives

I am seeking descendants of Raymond Griffith’s daughter, AMELIA ELEANOR GRIFFITHS, born London in 1899, died Cromer.

She married William Charles Goulty, at North Walsham, in 1924. I would appreciate hearing from relatives in the Norfolk area, with any information.

My Great Grandmother, Jessie Griffiths, began the Australian line of the family. Her father was Raymond Griffiths, born 1822, medical chest cabinetmaker, of London.

Financial Advisors: Who to trust? Written by Helen Batten – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr

At Hayes + Storr, we are increasingly being contacted by clients for legal advice in relation to loss of confidence in their financial advisors. As in all professions, including the legal sector, there are good and bad people, but what should clients do when they believe the advice given is inadequate, not tailored to their circumstances or just plain wrong?

writing to the financial advisor concerned and ask for the matter to be investigated and for a written response. The financial advisor will have a maximum time period of eight weeks to respond. If not response is received or you are unhappy with the response, you can then contact the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) for investigate the complaint on your behalf.

Complaint to Financial Conduct Authority Firms and individuals can only conduct regulated financial activities in the UK if they are registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to do so. When engaging a financial advisor, always check their status in the FCA register, which can be found on the organisation’s website.

A complaint to the FOS is a free and independent service that aims to resolve disputes between clients and their financial advisors, but it is not suitable for every case. If you and your solicitor decide to make a complaint, the FOS will consider its content and ask the financial advisor for their version of events before making a decision. However, you should be aware that the parties do not have to accept the decision made by the FOS. Depending on the circumstances of the complaint, it may be more appropriate to make a civil claim in the County Court to recover your losses.

If you have already engaged a financial advisor regulated by the FCA and are unhappy with their conduct or services, then the FCA provides a service resolving disputes. You may wish to engage a solicitor to assist you in bringing your complaint to the attention of the FCA. The first step is to put your complaint in

Negligence Claims in the County Court A claim to the County Court is likely to be made on the basis of a financial advisor negligently advising a client to make an

unsuitable investment, which has caused loss. The Court will consider whether the advice given by the financial advisor was negligent based on a strict legal test. The Court will want to ensure that the loss caused to the client was directly attributable to the poor advice given. The Court, with assistance from experts, will then calculate the value of the loss suffered. The aim is to put the client back in the situation they would have been in had the poor advice not been given.

The solicitors at Hayes + Storr are available to provide advice on the conduct of financial advisors and where their advice may give rise to either a complaint or a County Court claim. Discussing the matter with our legal professionals often assists in clarifying your concerns and working out a plan of action going forward. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact our Litigation Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01692 503081. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Summer comes to an end but the need for blood is constant In September, as the summer holidays end, children head back to school and people return to work. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in the local area to make sure giving bloodis part of their routine.

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors new and old to make an appointment to donate blood to help keep stocks healthy

throughout the autumn months.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales. It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect enough blood in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do so.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We need to maintain healthy blood stocks all year round to make sure patients get the blood they need whenever they need it. Some of our donors might have recently been abroad to somewhere that means they need to take a short break from donating. So whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about giving blood for the first time, check out if your foreign holiday has affected whether you can donate now. If you can donate, please book an appointment to give

blood and save lives. You never know when you or your loved one may need a life saving transfusion.”

To find out whether where you’ve been on your summer holiday affects whether you can donate now, visit: www.my.blood.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/Travel

Blood is always required to treat patients for a range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergencies but also during surgery and treatment for cancer and blood disorders, like sickle cell anaemia.

You can register as a donor, find out whether we’ve got a session coming up in your area and book an appointment to donate whenever and wherever you are through www.blood.co.uk or by using our app on your Android, Windows or Apple device. To download an app for your device, search 'NHSGiveBlood' in the app store.

Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Hugh Mungus On Wednesday 13 August a prehistoric elephant again walked along West Runton beach.

This was a replica of the mammoth discovered on West Runton beach in 1990 by Margaret and Harold Hems and was designed and built by plane maker and restorer Jeremy Moore.

The idea to build "Hugh Mungus", as the replica has been named, came from Susie Lay the Event Co-ordinator at Great Yarmouth Time and Tide Museum.

Hugh Mungus is aptly named as he stands four metres tall and six metres long and will be used as a teaching aid. Photos: Barry Davidson

What a great summer it’s been – we’ve not stopped since Whitsun and the restaurant is still extremely busy as we move into September.

Our Christmas party menu is out and of course the Grove is a wonderful venue for your seasonal get-togethers; please call us quickly to book as we do fill up rapidly!

Out of all our dishes on the a la carte this year the most popular and best-reviewed is undoubtedly our fabulous Cromer lobster. We get ours directly from John Davies and to keep them as fresh as possible they are on 24-hour order only, but if you are adventurous they are good fun to prepare yourself – and they are great with our own garlic and chilli sauce.

John and Ann Graveling grow our chillis for us in the greenhouse, ranging from mild to, shall we say, intense. One of our kitchen porters was feeling brave and took on a whole red chilli last week and nearly had to dash across to Cromer Hospital for emergency treatment…!

We are freezing our prices

At Wiltshire Farm Foods, we are always working to keep the price of our delicious meals down. In the last few years, the cost of food has continued to rise - putting much of Britain under a tighter budget. To help you at this time, we are happy to announce that we’ve frozen the price of all our dishes from March 2014 until March 2015.

Cromer Lobster with Sweet Chilli and Garlic

Do come in and see us for the best local seafood and the finest garden produce (including spicy hot chillis!)

Chilli sauce 1 red pepper (deseeded) 2 red chilli peppers (deseeded) 100ml white wine vinegar 100g caster sugar 100ml water

Place all the ingredients in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for ten minutes until the liquid turns pinkish.

Cool, then place in a food processor and blend until smooth. Return to the pan and cook for twenty minutes until sticky.

Using a sharp knife, cut the lobster in half lengthways (you may need some force!)

Remove all the brownish-grey interior and discard.

Take the rest of the meat out of the shell, brush inside of the shell with chilli sauce and replace the superb tail meat in the shell. Crack open the claws and remove the meat; place in the shell too.

Spread garlic butter on the lobster, then coat with chilli sauce.

Bake in the oven gas mark 5 for 10-15 minutes. Feel free to eat with your fingers!

The Grove, 95 Overstrand Road, Cromer NR270DJ 01263512412 enquiries@thegrovecromer.co.uk

As well as this, we’ve grown our range to include 23 main meals priced below £3, meaning there’s something tasty and great value for everyone. All this with free delivery to your door, allowing you to happily continue to enjoy our selection of 260 frozen meals, snacks and desserts whenever they take your fancy – in the comfort of your own home.

Gail Rowley said: “We know that value for money is important to our customers, and we want to ensure that our nutritious, convenient meals remain competitive and accessible. Our tempting choice of meals, snacks and desserts includes plenty of choice for those with special diets: we have a range of dysphagia-friendly pureed, soft and forkmashable meals/ gluten-free, low-salt and low-fat options.”

Sheringham is a Fairtrade Town

Almost ten months after the Steering Group had begun work for Sheringham to become a Fairtrade Town the application had been sent off. "You'll probably have to improve on the numbers of Fairtrade users or check some facts, before you're accepted," a friend advised me.

So it was with some trepidation that I picked up the large envelope from Fairtrade. But no there it was "Congratulations on achieving Fairtrade status for Sheringham. Doing so is a fantastic achievement." Well done to everyone who worked towards this.

The Carnival Day on 3 August was a great success, including the Fairtrade Stall. Some came to the Stall after sampling Fairtrade

products, donated by the local Co-op, from the decorated trade-bike, wheeled along by two Edwardian ladies! The banana-suited person also caught the attention of people, who were invited to try a Fairtrade banana. The Fairtrade goods and Craft items sold well, as did tombola tickets with a Fairtrade prize every time.

The Town Crier kindly came to congratulate us on becoming a Fairtrade town. Meeting a Banana may have been the highlight of his day! Later a sudden squally wind almost blew the gazebo away, but helping hands, including the Mayor and her husband, soon averted the crisis.

We are planning a celebration in early Autumn to which everyone in Sheringham will be invited.

This achievement is the beginning of Sheringham's Fairtrade journey, and we will build on this. We're sure that with Sheringham's care and support we will be able to help more communities in developing countries to earn enough for today, and invest in a better tomorrow.

Galton Blackiston to Open 25th anniversary Thornage Hall Garden Fete

Thornage Hall is looking forward to the opening of their Garden Fete to celebrate their 25th Anniversary on 7 September by Galton Blackiston, the Michelin starred chef at Morston Hall. Galton, who has appeared on Anglia Television, Gary Rhodes Food Heros, Market Kitchen, Great British Menu and is a regular on Saturday Kitchen with James Martin

(BBC) is always keen to promote seasonal and Norfolk produce. In response to being asked to open the fete he said “I am delighted to be opening this years Thornage Hall Garden Fete this is a great opportunity to use high quality local organic produce from Thornage Hall in my cookery demonstration”

Preparations for the garden fete are now well underway. Over 700 people are expected to attend the Fete where they will be able to see the Thornage alpacas, take a guided walk around the farm, wander around a range of stalls from local businesses, as well as Thornage Hall’s own stalls with bio dynamic garden produce and hand made art and craft products on sale. Entertainment for the day will be provided by local bands East Coast, Trix ‘n Stix, and Jack Austin. Children will be entertained by a treasure hunt or playing the village games and there will be a debut performance of Macbeth by the Thornage Drama Group – a joint venture between people using services at Thornage Hall and pupils from Aylsham High School. There will also be a dog show and refreshments and a Barbeque selling Thornage’s own organic Beef Burgers and hot dogs.

Thornage Hall is a unique charity set in an idyllic setting in North Norfolk on the 70 acre Thornage estate. It aims to be an environmentally sustainable organisation providing supported living and work for adults with learning disabilities. Sheringham Playpark Revamp

Our Fun Day was once again a great success, despite several attractions cancelling at the last minute. We raised over £750 towards our project.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our Town Crier, Tony Nelson for taking part in our Fun Day and to our wonderful Mayor, Tricia Brooks who officially opened the new infant area of the Playpark saying 'What an amazing event to be asked to open. Two years ago a group of parents and other interested people came together to improve our beloved Playpark. With the help of Councillor Brian Hannah the Playpark Revamp Group was born. It has been a very difficult journey to find the funding for such an expensive venture. I have watched this determined group of people work so hard to see their dream of providing a modern and safe Playpark for all the children in Sheringham come to fruition. Today

we are here to see the first part of the project completed, the toddler and picnic area. You all should be so proud of yourselves to see the joy you are bringing to so many children. I know how important a safe play area is to families. My grandchildren have spent many happy hours playing on the old site especially the slide. This is only the beginning, the group have a dream for a super slide and other attractions and this is why we must all keep supporting them with time and money. This project is a beacon to the community as to how we can come together to improve our town. I have so much respect for you and you will have my continued support.'

Our thanks also to 'Mystico' (Rob Rathbone) who put on a very much unplanned impromptu magic show!

Kelling Probus

Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed twenty members and three guests to the August meeting of Kelling Probus at The Dales hotel. After a tasty lunch he introduced our speaker Andrew Bayles, Senior Urology Registrar at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated at Nottingham University, and later worked for a couple of years at the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital where he met his future wife whose father is a member of Probus.

His talk was mainly about prostate. Andy explained how the walnut sized gland works. With age the prostate grows and may cause problems by restricting or even preventing the passing of water.Medication is the first step in treatment and may be successful in reducing the size of the prostate. If required laser surgery is the usual practice now for this and other problems.

Prostate cancer is very common in 80/90 year olds and can be detected by PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood testing. While this prostate screening does seem to save some lives worries about overdiagnosis remain because there is a high risk of overtreatment causing side effects such as incontinence or impotence.Members were relieved to hear that in the great majority of cases no treatment at all is necessary. “You are more likely to die with it rather than from it!” was a very reassuring message.

This subject was of great interest to all present and members appreciated Andrew’s relaxed and informative talk which provided a first class forum for a question and answer session. Sidney Sturgess thanked Andrew on behalf of members of the Club.A lively discussion on Club business was concluded with Terry Penrose giving details of the Christmas lunch to be held at Sheringham Golf Club on 18th December.

Bill Day (01263 826083) will be pleased to hear from anyone interested in joining us at our next meeting on 19th September or from any members unable to attend. In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

We would also like to thank Love 2 Bounce, F1 Karting, our Police Community Support Officers, Rob Henry for taking photographs, Sheringham Carnival Association who loaned us equipment and particularly

Cris Glover and Rob Emery who pitched in, also all those who had craft stalls, the fabulous people who baked cakes for us to sell, the friends and family who helped out on the day and all those that donated raffle prizes. And of course, many thanks to all those who came along and spent their money!

A very special thank you goes to David Brooks who presented our group with a cheque for over £1200 on behalf of The Sheringham Lodge of Freemasons. David and Tricia Brooks have been raising funds for us over the last year and continue to provide us with much needed support, for this we are extremely grateful.

We are looking forward to proceeding with the Revamp of the Playpark in the very near future.

Kittens arrive in care in all colours and sizes and it is interesting to just compare the different starts in life the ones in care have experienced. There are the kittens which arrived having been found in a local boatyard. At present they are still being socialised as they had no contact with people before they arrived. On the same day, and from the same boatyard, we took in two more kittens, only about two days old, which have been hand reared. We also have three kittens which joined us from a feral colony. Fortunately, they were young enough to adapt quickly to their changed circumstances. Next, are eight kittens, born in care to one cat two days after she arrived! Mum is not very big, had already had at least one litter and, although one kitten gave us cause for concern, all have survived. Four more have come in having been born outside (the mum of two of these is also in care). The ones that came in with mum are very friendly and the other two, being slightly older and a little nervous to begin with, took a little longer to settle, but are now enjoying life in their pen. We also have two which have arrived via veterinary surgeons. One was handed in at four days old, (another hand rear) having, we were told, been found outside! The other, Mackintosh, had been in a road accident and requires cage rest. Unfortunately, no one has reported him missing. Finally, Tina, who spent the first night in care

in my bathroom, came in with her siblings at two weeks old, (again requiring hand rearing), having been found in a drain pipe. I think Irene, who fostered all the hand rears, is now looking forward to an uninterrupted nights sleep!

We also have kittens come into care because their owners have too many cats or, having bred them to sell on the internet find, (because there are so many on there), they have not been able to sell them. With regard to selling online, our Head Office is working with other interested bodies, plus a MP (who is introducing a bill to parliament), to bring in more controls to prevent irresponsible breeding, and stop people passing cats off as pedigree when clearly they are not.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Norman Lamb speaks out for social justice for coastal communities

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb met last month with Ostend residents and local Liberal Democrat councillors Lee Walker and Eric Seward to discuss the findings of a report by engineers Mott MacDonald into defence of the coastline at Ostend.

The report, which was commissioned by North Norfolk District Council after pressure from Norman Lamb and local councillors following coastal damage in the tidal surge last year, recommended a number of options for defending the coast at Ostend.

Norman Lamb will now write to the Environment Secretary asking if she will meet with a delegation from North Norfolk, including local residents and NNDC, to discuss the threat to homes at Ostend.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “We have to fight for social justice for coastal communities. Scientists have predicted that as a result of global climate change, severe weather events like the coastal surge in December last year could become much more frequent. It is essential that those who live on the front line are not left to face the consequences alone, and I am determined to stand up for fair treatment for those living on our coastline.” Sheringham Independent 399 September 6th 2014

Changing options for the treatment of unwanted veins. Days of open surgery, prolonged bruising and painful recovery are long gone.

There is no denying that patients today are choosing minimally invasive or non-invasive options where possible. In the past there has been a degree of scepticism about benefits of such treatments. How can a beam of light replace a surgeon’s knife? Is this too good to be true? Not any more.

Today non-invasive methods are replacing surgery at a very fast rate. So much so that NICE -The National Institute of Clinical Excellence has updated it’s guidelines on the treatment of varicose veins. It has recommended Endovenous laser treatment as the preferred option, foam injections second and surgery where the first two options are not suitable or declined.

How is EVLT or endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins performed? Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the faulty vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other

healthy veins after the laser therapy.

What about thread and spider veins on the legs? Thread and spider veins can be like tips of an iceberg. There can be hidden Varicose Veins that need to be ruled out before undertaking treatments for these veins. This usually means an ultrasound scan. It is irresponsible to start firing a laser at thread veins without first undertaking a thorough clinical and ideally an ultrasound evaluation. It is not a great idea to see a non-doctor with a laser as this is a dangerous tool in the wrong hands. We have seen patients with deep laser burns resulting from inappropriate treatments carried out elsewhere. Usually microscerotherapy or microinjections into thread veins work well. For tiny veins we have a range of lasers that can be used. It is important to choose a clinic with a range of lasers as one laser is never suitable for everybody.

How do you treat veins on the face? Sclerotherapy is very valuable for treatment of leg veins but laser and IPL treatment is safer and better for facial veins. Facial redness and spider veins are a common cosmetic and medical complaint. These are particularly common in rosacea suffers. Common associations are seen with sun damage, a fair complexion, stress, spicy foods and fluctuations in temperature which exacerbate rosacea symptoms. As with many conditions,

genetics plays a role too. Numerous treatments are available but laser and light based treatments are the gold-standard treatment options. We have a comprehensive range of lasers to treat these very successfully. Usually a few sessions are required for best results.

What are venous lakes and can you treat these? Venous lakes a common condition but unfortunately there is a lack of awareness even amongst the health professionals. Venous lakes are dark blue to violet compressible small swelling caused by swelling of venules. These are common on sun-exposed skin. They also commonly occur on lips and are uncommon before 50 years of age. We have patients travelling from all over the country to see us and so far we have managed to clear all of these in just one or two sessions.

What other vein related conditions can you treat? We can treat veins and blemishes such as angiomas, spider naevi, birthmarks and lumps and bumps anywhere on the body. With hand veins and blue veins on the temples it is better to disguise these veins by using fillers or fat injections rather than remove or zap these with the lasers as these may be normal veins which have started to become visible due to loss of volume.

1.6 million people across the UK are affected by eating disorders and Beat’s Young Ambassador scheme sees young people aged 14-25 use their personal experience of an eating disorder, raising awareness of these serious mental illnesses that claim the lives of one in five of the most seriously affected. Much of the Young Ambassadors role sees them representing Beat at events, holding talks at local schools or community groups, attending professional healthcare training among other activities to reduce stigma and educate others about eating disorders.

Laura, a current Young Ambassador based in Norfolk, said “Becoming a Young Ambassador for Beat is definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. The position has made me gain confidence and grow as a person. I am now able to do things that I would have never thought possible before. I have been given some truly fantastic opportunities which have enabled me to use my knowledge of an eating disorder in a positive way!”

Pavlina Parashkevova, Beat’s Young People’s Participation Officer said “We’re really looking forward to growing our Young Ambassador team in Norfolk, where we have our Head Offices. Not only do we hope that we will be able to continue to spread the word about eating disorders and our work in Norfolk but it is also always rewarding to see the development of the young people who join the team and how they flourish and grow as individuals, just like Laura.”

Applications to the scheme close on Friday 12 September or as soon as sufficient numbers are reached. To be eligible you must be aged 14 to 25, live in Great Yarmouth, West, North or South Norfolk, have a personal experience of an eating disorder and be at least one year out of inpatient treatment if you have received this form of support. Applications are encouraged from Thornage Hall 25th Anniversary those with experience of anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder and both males and females. 7th September 11:30am to 4pm • Adults £2.50 Under 16s Free

Captain’s charity golf marathon was rounded off in style with a 20 foot putt for par on the 54th hole

Liz Hewett, the Ladies Captain at the Links Golf Club, West Runton raised over £1,200 for Canine Partners by completing the challenge of playing 54 holes in eleven hours on the 23rd August.

Members and supporters had gathered around the final green to cheer Liz home. As the shadows lengthened, Liz holed a spectacular putt from off the green to complete the day.

Liz, who only got back into playing golf three years ago said, ‘I would like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported me in this challenge. I am pleased to have been able to raise so much money for such a great cause by playing a game I love. To get a par on the last hole was a dream finish to a special day’.

Norfolk Prepared Week 2014

Being caught in an emergency can be scary. Whether it’s severe weather, flooding or a power cut it’s good to know what to do to help yourself and those around you.

Every year the Norfolk Resilience Forum runs Norfolk Prepared Week to demonstrate the kinds of simple measures we can all take to make sure we’re ready for emergencies. This year’s theme is to ‘Be Prepared and Stay Safe’.

Norfolk Prepared Week 2014 kicks off at the Forum in Norwich on the 20th September 10am to 4pm with a whole range of interesting events, demonstrations, activities and competitions with some cool prizes.

Her day had started at 7:30 in the morning with the first nine holes which were played with club vice-captain Tim McCrohon. A different playing partner and caddy accompanied Liz for each of her nine holes and she was well supported in the clubhouse with collections and sponsorship.

The £1,200 will be added to money already raised during her year as Ladies Captain and will all go to her chosen charity Canine Partners who provide assistance dogs for people with disabilities.

In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

During the day you’ll be able to pick up top tips on everything from fire safety to First Aid, online safety, flood protection and more. There will also be some live demonstrations including car cutting from the Emergency Services and the launch of our App.

And of course you’ll be able to meet someone who’s always ready for an emergency….Ready Eddy the Emergency Teddy!

For more information on Norfolk Prepared Week please visit the Norfolk Resilience Forum Website at www.norfolkprepared.gov.uk or follow us on Twitter (@NorfolkPrepared).

Norfolk audiences were able to see the play first when it previewed at this year’s Holt Festival – where Director Jack Lowe returned to present the show at The Auden Theatre, part of his old school, Greshams.

tees hoodies shoes hats belts jackets wetsuits swimwear watches sunglasses skateboards scooters and much more!

The show has been supported by Escalator East to Edinburgh and Norfolk & Norwich Festival (where it also appeared earlier this year). This is the second year running that Holt Festival has previewed a show that has gone on to huge success at the Fringe. In 2013 David Greig’s The Events premiered at Holt before going on to win a Fringe First and tour the world.

Jack Lowe said ‘It has been so exciting to start our work in a barn in Spixworth, then take it to Holt and Norfolk and Norwich Festivals, then on to The Fringe with the brilliant support of Escalator East to Edinburgh. We can't wait to make work in Norfolk again.'

Norfolk based publicist Steve Forster, a veteran of 15 Edinburgh Festivals commented ‘to rise to the top of the pile at the Fringe is a very impressive achievement indeed. There are something like 3,000 shows being performed every day for three and a half weeks. curious directive will be recognized all over the world now!’

This is the second time the Norfolk based company has won a Fringe First – they also won in 2011 with their play Your Last Breath. In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

A Norfolk based theatre company, with a former Gresham’s School student as its artistic Director, has landed one of the biggest prizes at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Curious directive received a prestigious Fringe First Award for their play ‘Pioneer’ Often referred to as the Edinburgh ‘Oscars’ the Fringe First Awards were launched by The Scotsman newspaper 41 years ago. ‘Pioneer’ is a multi-media sci-fi thriller about an attempt to colonise Mars.

In presenting the Award The Scotsman’s chief theatre critic Joyce McMillan said curious directive have developed a trademark style that is both intricate and epic, conjuring up entirely new worlds and making them feel as believable as our own.

Like father, like daughter? Leon Bunnewell & Ruth Bunnewell

Summer exhibition at The Gallery Norfolk, Cromer 6th-27th September

The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer is spotlighting two Norfolk artists for its second annual summer exhibition: Leon Bunnewell, whose solo show a year ago made him one of the gallery’s most sought-after painters, and his daughter Ruth Bunnewell, also a well-established name, but exhibiting at the gallery for the first time.

together, and a fascinating feature of the show will be six works painted at the special request of The Gallery Norfolk’s owner Polly Miller. Here, Leon and Ruth have both painted the same three subjects, so visitors to the exhibition will be able to compare and contrast the work of the two artists. An example is

The artistic line in the Bunnewell family runs from Leon’s father, Leonard – a keen painter who in the 1960s established an annual exhibition for amateur artists in Great Yarmouth – and both Leon and Ruth excel at landscapes and favour oils as their medium, but the distinctive personalities of father and daughter shine out in their work.

Leon, who is largely self-taught, creates highly-coloured canvases, painted on location in a single session, and often alive with motion, while Ruth, who trained at the Norwich School of Art and Design, takes a more reflective and structured approach, working in the studio from photographs; she captures a specific, remembered moment, combining stillness with dramatic use of strong lines and vibrant pigments.

This will be the first time they have exhibited

daughter, but different in so many ways as painters” says Polly Miller. “Leon paints outdoors, as quickly as possible. Spontaneity is vital to him, and he doesn’t like to think too much about or rationalise what he is doing. Ruth works in a much more measured style, but she too seeks a sense of unconscious spontaneity: as she paints, she will listen to an audio book or a play on Radio 4 so that her mind is occupied with something other than what her brush is doing... There is an air of mystery in her work, a tantalising sense of a moment captured when something has just happened – or is maybe just about to happen. Leon’s work, by contrast, is very much of the moment.

“Each of them admires what the other one does. They obviously take an informed view, but they don’t believe in attempting to exert influence on each other, or to critique each other’s work. But I’m sure that visitors to the exhibition will find plenty to stimulate discussion.”

a tree-lined road near Heydon: rising up to meet the viewer, Leon’s wide-angle view bristles with cool and acid greens, lavender and sky blue, while Ruth’s tighter, more graphic composition counterpoints expanses of lime green with deep, calm greys and arresting streaks of red in the broad Norfolk sky.

“Leon and Ruth are very close as father and

There will be more than 25 paintings on show – including one on view only by Leon’s pace-setting father Leonard – ranging in size from just 30cm square to epically scaled canvases over a metre in length; prices will start at £250, rising to £2000.

Gallery Norfolk also offers an expert in-house framing service with a superb selection of mouldings and mounts.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER COASTAL GARDENS

windbreak also affects its efficiency. On the windward side, start with lower planting and build up the height. Good hedging varieties include Griselinia littoralis, Rosa rugosa, Euonymous japonica, eleagnus and escallonia.

Many people who move to the coast find that gardening beside the seaside has both advantages and disadvantages. They can enjoy fabulous light, dramatic views and fresh energising air but strong winds and salt spray can batter their gardens. Coastal climates can vary considerably even within a small area like North Norfolk so it is important to watch how the winds affect your garden and then hone your microclimate so that you and your plants can really enjoy the conditions.

Perhaps the first task is to create a windbreak. If possible surround the garden with a shelter belt of trees and hedges. Walls and solid fences can cause turbulence and picket fences or trees and hedges are more effective in filtering the wind. The thickness of the

In real problem areas consider using glass screens to preserve views, although this will create turbulence on the sheltered side. It is possible to find special glass that has a coating on one surface that reacts with daylight to break down organic dirt and causes rain and spray to form sheets of water that wash the glass for you. Glass used as a fence would need to be toughened or laminated. You can get stick-on transfers of birds of prey to scare other birds away and stop them crashing into it.

In really exposed gardens it might be possible to find or create a special spot where you can sit and eat sheltered from the prevailing wind. Although it means a lot of work sinking the seating area into the ground can be very effective. Excavate to a depth of 600mm (2ft) for the paving and put hedging or sturdy wind filtering plants around the upper edge. Planting can lift the wind for a distance of up to 20 times its height, even a metre-high screen affords

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

a 20 m-long space a degree of shelter.

Once you have sorted out the shelter problems, you can make the rest of the garden more open with lower planting. Try hebes, myrtle, broom, rosemary, crocosmia, osteospermums and cotton lavender. Fuchsias, pittosporums and cordylines also do well. Smaller grasses, thrifts and sedums are also attractive when windswept and will not obstruct the view. Look over the fence to see what is flourishing in neighbouring gardens and also see what the local council plants in their cliff top displays.

The lack of severe frosts may also mean that border line hardy plants and even exotic plants which other gardeners only dream of are worth trying near the coast. You only have to look around Alan Grey’s gardens at East Ruston to see the wonderful plants that can be grown close to the sea when there is a good shelter belt of trees and shrubs.

Finally, the free draining, often sandy soil found near the coast and the winds make it necessary to cosset plants for longer than normal. Soak them well at each watering but do not irrigate until it is really necessary, as this will encourage the roots to grow deep. Use mulches (gravel or coarse bark) to conserve water, and add organic matter to increase the humus levels and retain moisture.
