Sheringham History Group

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

Having visited historic King's Lynn for the past two years, on 3 September the Sheringham History Group travelled to Aylsham for an outing and soak up the history.

Although the focus was on historic Pubs and Inns there was much history to be shared beginning and ending at the Heritage Centre. Just off the town square was the Black Boys Pub and Inn visited by Horatio Nelson. The weather was favourable and the walk was relaxed, organised and informative amongst the busy streets and square of this market town.

The Heritage Centre included timely displays of photos and memorabilia from the First World War. This reminds one of the Mo Museum's current expansion plans funded by a Lottery grant to include room for more social history of Sheringham and meeting rooms. Take a look at the Mo Museum website for updates: www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk

Local Butcher Brings Home The Banger

Icarus Hines beat off the competition at the 10th Annual Battle Of The Banger earlier this month to claim the top prize of People’s Choice. Over 4,000 people attended the event held at the Forum this year with the majority of voters choosing Icarus’ Norfolk sausage. It was a firm favourite as it was also awarded the runner up spot in the Judges and Sponsors choice category.

With a vast array of flavours it was tricky deciding which variety to compete with so Icarus turned to Facebook to help. He thought it was obvious which sausage to enter.

“I was going to take our Traditional variety as it is our best seller but my family thought it a good idea to put it to a public vote via Facebook. We got a great response

and it surprised me when our Norfolk flavour received over half of the public vote. That persuaded me to change my mind, and it’s a good job I did. It just goes to show my customers know their sausage.”

Customers who voted on Facebook for their favourite sausage were also entered into a competition to win a year’s supply of Icarus Hines sausages. David Hobart of Southrepps was announced as the winner on Saturday. Icarus expressed how good it felt to tell David the news:

“Being able to give something back to such a loyal customer feels wonderful. I know that David will make the most of his prize and it will give him the chance to try every one of our sausage flavours.”

Competition at Battle of the Banger was stiff from the five other experienced butchers, so it was no mean feat to come out on top. The advantage may have come from being the only butcher to cook on charcoal but one thing is for certain, Icarus Hines can now officially boast he has the best sausage in Norfolk.

The Lifeboat crew were tasked to proceed to Weybourne and then return doing a thorough search of the inshore waters and foreshore back in an easterly direction as far as West Runton.

The Lifeboat completed an inshore water search from Weybourne through to beyond East Runton and then returned to Sheringham also doing a further inshore waters search before being stood down at 23.00 hrs.

The missing person was thankfully found safe and well, inland and about five miles from Sheringham. Good service professionally undertaken.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

Our Christmas Party Menu and Booking Form are now available for the pub and we have produced a leaflet giving details of all our Christmas events and I am delighted to tell you that we are already taking bookings so if you want to be sure of a particular date my advice is to book as soon as possible. But before we get to Christmas we have a great autumn to look forward to with new menus, and a few special surprises along the way.

Our web site www.whitehorseovestrand.co.uk has all the latest news, menus and special accommodation offers so it’s worth having a look. The village is still busy with holiday visitors and we expect to see many of our summer guests returning for a short break with us in the coming months. The outside of the pub is being painted and repaired before the winter weather sets in and the clocks go back which I might remind everyone is on Sunday 26th October so you still have a few weeks of lighter evening for a stroll around the village before enjoying an evening meal and a pint at the White Horse.

Nathan Boon’s Recipe Traditional Scone Recipe (serves 6)

Ingredients 250g Self Raising Flour 40g Sugar 1 tsp Baking Powder

55g Soft Butter 150ml Milk 2 Egg Whites

Handful of Raisins

Method Whisk egg whites until they have doubled in volume, then add the Sugar and Butter, stir and add rest of mix. Grease six ring moulds place on a tray on top of baking mat. Bake at 180 degrees for around 12 minutes or until you can push a knife into the scone and it comes out clean. Serve with Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream.

Sheringham Town Council

The Town Council recently received notification from North Norfolk District Council that the byelaws with regard to prohibiting cycling on the promenade are to remain in place.

The letter received from District Council noted the following information with regard to this issue:

A risk assessment has been undertaken by a District Council Corporate Health and Safety officer in relation to cycling on the promenade. The conclusion is that cycling should be prohibited at all times because the likelihood of a collision between a cyclist and a pedestrian and the seriousness of potential injury, particularly to a child, is too high. Appropriate signage will therefore be installed to make clear to promenade users that cycling is prohibited.

And maybe the signage at corner of Beach Road and the Prom could be better.

Norman Lamb plans sponsored cycle ride to raise money for local health charities

North Norfolk MP and Care Minister Norman Lamb is planning a 100-mile sponsored cycle ride around the boundary of his North Norfolk constituency, to raise money for a range of local health charities.

The cycle ride will be carried out over two days, on 23 and 24 September, starting and finishing in North Walsham. Norman is aiming to visit each of the local charities he is supporting during the cycle ride. Norman is also encouraging people who support his cycle ride to complete his survey on their priorities for better health and care services to help him campaign for improved healthcare in North Norfolk.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “One of my highest priorities as Member of Parliament for North Norfolk has been campaigning for better health and care services in our area. Here in North Norfolk, we are lucky to have some fantastic local hospitals in North Walsham, Cromer, Holt, and Wells – all of which have active “Friends” charities run by local volunteers who raise money to help improve the care and services they can offer. I am also particularly supportive of the work done by Break Charity in Sheringham supporting children with learning disabilities, and the national mental health charity MIND. I am really pleased to have this opportunity to support such a great set of causes, and the

Sheringham Football Club

excellent work they do.

If you want to sponsor one of these organisations, you can find details on my website at normanlamb.org.uk/bettercare. There is also a survey you can fill in to let me know your priorities for local health and care services and I would like to hear from as many people as possible.”

Our photo shows Sheringham Youth Under 8s team, which is the youngest team at Sheringham Football Club, with coaches Eddie Hammond and Chris Cude.

The team plays in the North East Norfolk Youth League, usually on a Saturday morning, with home matches played at Sheringham Recreation Ground, Weybourne Road (behind Splash).

Team sponsors are Bob Brewster from the Crown Public House Sheringham, Gavin Armstrong of GRA Civils Limited and Stuart Laidlaw of SL Property Maintenance, whose support has been invaluable. Training takes place on Friday evening on the Multi Use Games Area every week at The Recreation Ground. All players in that age group are welcome.

The Conservation Volunteers spearhead the last year of The Big Tree Plant

Free trees are being offered to communities across Norfolk and Suffolk to create new woodlands this winter.

The trees have been provided by the Government as part of Defra’s ‘The Big Tree Plant’ campaign which ends this winter. It brings together local communities and national organisations to get more people involved in planting and caring for trees.

Mark Webster, Health Projects Officer for The Conservation Volunteers, who are supporting the scheme locally, said: “A properly managed wood can provide a great habitat and food supply for birds, mammals and insects and we’re delighted to be able to offer trees, stakes and guards free to communities in Norfolk and Suffolk. These planting schemes will have enormous benefits for the people taking part as well as the local area”.

People or organisations wishing to apply for free trees should contact Mark via m.webster@tcv.org.uk or 01603 767 300.

in October and November, and evenings and weekends from Monday, November 24 until the production starts. Each team will then do one show a day throughout the run.

Young people aged eight to 21 are being invited to audition for Sheringham Little Theatre’s professional pantomime. Robin Hood will run from Tuesday, December 9, 2014, to Saturday, January 3, 2015, and will feature talented youngsters in a range of leading and chorus roles.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson invited anyone interested to come along to the venue at 9.30am on Sunday, September 21.

“They must be able to sing and dance but do not need to prepare anything as they will be taught a routine and song to perform on the day,” she said. “They will be asked to sing solo and are advised to wear clothes they can move in.”

Important roles include the likes of Jack and Jill (must be aged between eight and 13 years), Little John and Will Scarlett (16 to 21), the Merry Men and guards (boys aged 14 and over) and Nottingham villagers (aged 8 to 21). If chosen, younger actors will work in two teams, rehearsing on Sundays

Confusion at Christmas

Neil Robertson, who lives in North Walsham, usually spends his evenings training for his next boxing tournament. During the day, Neil works as a support worker at the Your Choice Social Centre, in North Walsham, but at rehearsals he is a seven year old boy who is obsessed with the well known TV game, ‘A Question of Sport.’ Will he remember that he is in a nativity play, or will he start adding to the script?

Another local man in this production is Neville Rowe, an ambulance driver from Trunch. Neville plays the part of Joseph, who gets stage struck and can’t remember his lines, or where he is supposed to stand on the stage.

“This is a huge commitment – for parents, as well as the young people – but it is also an incredible opportunity,” Debbie said. “While they do not have to have any experience, we do ask those trying out to be keen, enthusiastic and hard working. If chosen, they will be given the chance to be part of a professional and very popular pantomime and they will also find out just how much fun it is to be part of a show like this.” For more information on the auditions please visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

*Robin Hood runs at the Sheringham Little Theatre from Tuesday, December 9 to Saturday, January 3. For more information or to book tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

It turns out that they are not entirely clear about the Nativity story either. One of the shepherds, played by Zoe, tells everyone that there was a “fat man called John Burgeon” with Mary and the baby Jesus in the stable in the Nativity story. According to Zoe, it says so in the Christmas carol, Silent Night. (Zoe has mis-heard the line, ‘Round yon virgin, mother and child!)

Things are further complicated by the fact that no-one is sure of their lines or the songs they are supposed to sing.

Such misunderstandings are heard by primary school teachers every Christmas, some are very funny, some are just odd, but Tim Firth, author of The Calendar Girls has taken these priceless gems and written a hilarious play, called Flint Street Nativity based on a class-

room of children, waiting to present their Nativity play to their parents. Their long suffering teacher, has to deal with the angel Gabriel wanting to be Mary, an innkeeper who is determined to ‘improve’ the script to make it better, the new child who hasn’t fitted in yet, the class bully who is in love with the virgin Mary and much, much more.

Needless to say, their Nativity play does not go according to plan, and the ensuing chaos is made worse when the class pet, a stick insect, escapes in the middle of the play.

The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, who are celebrating their 100th year this year, are hoping to raise £500 for the BBC Radio Norfolk and the Salvation Army’s Tins and Toys appeal from this incredibly funny production.

Flint Street Nativity will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 15 to 18 October. Box Office: 01263-822347.

Eating disorder charity Beat offers autumn programme of workshops for families Norfolk-based charity Beat, the UK’s leading campaigning eating disorders charity, continue their partnership with the Norfolk Community Eating Disorder Service, offering another series of Collaborative Care Skills Workshops this autumn.

The eight free workshops begin on 1 October 2014 and aim to empower families and carers to support change and recovery through improved understanding of eating disorders. Practical skills for dealing with difficult situations are also central to the programme.

This announcement comes as the Government has promised a mental health task force to improve the delivery of services for young people, highlighting the need for effective care in the community. Beat understands that parents and families are part of the solution and can play a significant role in the recovery of children, young people and adults. The workshops seek to empower parents, partners and siblings of people of all ages affected by an eating disorder to support them in the community, preventing the need for inpatient care.

“Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, but the majority of people affected make a full

recovery,” said Louise Dunne, Volunteering Co-ordinator for Beat. “Support from family members can really help – but no-one can expect to understand eating disorders, how best to act or what to say without the right information and guidance. Eating disorders can cause drastic changes in behaviour which can be very distressing for the person affected and their families. In Norfolk, our Collaborative Care Skills Workshops have helped families to feel more confident in dealing with difficult situations and providing appropriate support.”

The series of eight free Collaborative Care Skills Workshops will run on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm-9pm at The Charing Cross Centre, 17-19 St John Maddermarket, Norwich NR2 1DN.

For more information or to register to attend, email norfolkgroups@ b-eat.co.uk or call 01603 753338.

Previous attendees have praised the workshops and the significance of the skills they learned. One local mother said of her son’s recovery: “Looking back to this time last year we can hardly believe that it’s possible he’s come so far in such a short space of time. Now he is in a healthy weight range, has a normal relationship with food again and is coping very well with what life throws at him. As a family we have all learned so much over the last year and I’m convinced that his recovery would have taken much longer without the very valuable lessons we learned at the workshops.” Beat runs a number of dedicated services in Norfolk including a helpline 0300 300 0115, email service norfolkhelpmail@b-eat.co.uk, free training for healthcare professionals, self help and support groups for eating disorder sufferers and carers and self help and support groups for those with emotional overeating.

Thorpe Market Church update

A picture to gladden our hearts! The Unpaid Work Unit has spent three days cutting the long grass, raking it off and barrowing it down to the Hazel Grove.

Church members spent time engaging with the young workers, boiling kettles and providing cakes. We found it a worthwhile experience and the young men seemed very happy to have people having normal conversations with them. They will return in October and the intention is to ask them to clear the Hazel Grove. The church mowers are still in dock, one is likely beyond repair and will need re-placing but the scything machine will enable us to keep on top of the churchyard for the rest of the year.

work, so further publicity to extend the volunteer base will take place in the near future.

Meanwhile, volunteers have worked on the borders around the church and the seat has been painted. The borders look rather bare because some of the lavenders had to be

removed because of old age but re-planting is on the agenda. Meanwhile the need is for volunteers, a posse of churchyard gnomes, to complement the current workers. Plans are afoot to paint gates, trim back over-grown hollies and buddleia and cut back the ivy on the walls.

Contact info@thorpemarket.org.uk or 01263 833252.

The churchyard is now well on its way to being restored to its former award winning glory. A regular schedule of services at 10am on the first and third Sundays of each month is now in place.

Offers of help with the routine mowing are already forth-coming although it is a case of many hands make light

The Lighthouse celebrates first birthday

The Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham is one year old this month, and is planning a special celebration, called simply ONE, on Sunday September 21, one year to the day after the opening ceremony.

There has been a Baptist church in Sheringham since 1929, but the fellowship had been seeking to move or expand for around twenty years as their 1952 building on Holway Road had become cramped and dated. Structural problems which emerged in 2009 prompted the purchase of a new site on Cromer Road which was nearly three times the size of the old plot.

The striking modern building was completed a year ago, and the first Sunday meeting was held on September 1 last year, when the congregation walked from the old building along Cromer Road and crossed over the zebra crossing into the new centre, known simply as “Lighthouse”, for a time of celebration, followed by coffee and doughnuts.

The opening ceremony followed three weeks later, and formed part of a day of celebration on September 21 last year, with the guest appearance of Daniel Cutting, the Guinness Book of Records football “keep ups” champion, who demonstrated his skills.

Since then, the church’s activities, which are all open to the public, have been thriving. These include the table tennis club, Kaleidoscope social club, Jigsaw toddler group, Art club, Youth Football clubs, School’s Out after school club, Mix youth club, Lighthouse Café, and of course the main meeting on Sundays at 10.15am. The Lighthouse building has also been used by many community groups, including Slimming World, Little Theatre, and several local choirs and societies.

“We’ve had a really exciting year since we crossed over that road into this wonderful building” said Senior Pastor Bryan Pickard. “We’ve seen significant growth in nearly all areas of church life, and we have been in the rich streams of God’s blessing, especially since the beginning of 2014.”

ONE will start with the weekly meeting at 10.15am on Sunday September 21, which will celebrate those rich

streams, and there will be an invitation for members of the fellowship to make a contribution towards repaying some of the building fund loan. The meeting will be followed by a free barbecue at around 1pm in Lighthouse grounds. Members of the public are warmly welcome to join in the ONE celebrations by coming along to the meeting and/or the barbecue.

The ONE theme will continue during the following week, as there will be a different ONE deal in Lighthouse Café each day. “Our first year has certainly been much busier than we expected”, said café manager Maggie Rothe, “but there must still be local people who have not been to see us, so the special offers running all week give you the excuse you need to sample our excellent coffee!”

Crab & Lobster Festival’s Auction a grand success!

The 2014 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 24 August with a Grand Auction of Bootiful Boats and World Pier Crabbing Championships in Cromer.

The decorated boats lined the slopes leading down to the pier, local food and craft stalls lined the promenade and lines were set ready for a fun-filled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding. The sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.

Under the hammer of renowned auctioneer Martyn Fox, the 70 boats sold in just over 50 minutes to raise over £4,100 which will be distributed to local charities via the Festival’s Community Grant scheme.

The boats were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival

We have many Unsung Heroes in Sheringham. For me one of the most deserving of praise and any award is Mr Colin Seal. He has done so much to brighten our town with murals depicting out history and attractions from Bathing Belles to our historic lifeboats, not forgetting our railways and Sheringham’s lifeblood, the Fishing Folk. Who doesn’t have memories of elderly gentlemen dozing in deckchairs, trousers rolled to the knee with a knotted handkerchief on their heads? I walked around the corner of the ‘Mo’ from the East Slipway and for a moment thought ‘I don’t remember a doorway on the steps down from the Crown car park, nor the flint wall’. It was just so realistic. Colin also loves to involve the children and any passersby in ‘having a go’. Thank you Colin. Mrs Margaret Gould, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

In response to the letter about Franklin Hill, Councillor Peter Cox has kindly supplied me with this information, “At the September 1902 meeting of Sheringham Urban District Council they discussed a letter from Frederic Franklin offering the crest of the then Hooks Hill and two access points in memory of his recently deceased mother Adelaide Franklin. In 1903 the gift of the Crest was presented to the town for the perpetual use of the public and was renamed Franklin Hill. At the 1974 Local Government change The Urban District Council became the North Norfolk District Council and they became the responsible authority.” I hope this information gives clarity to the question of to whom does it belong. The only body who presently cares for the Hill is Sheringham in Bloom. They desperately need new volunteers to help with the mammoth task of looking after so many areas of the town. Many people admire their work but admiration is not enough. Tricia Brooks Mayor of Sheringham, Hooks Hill Road

It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect blood of each blood group in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do so. John Canning, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We are asking blood donors in Anglia to make an appointment to donate blood to keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months. The whole process of donating only takes an hour or so and you will be helping to ensure that patients get the blood they need.

Blood is required to treat patients for a whole range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergency situations, during surgery and in maternity and neonatal care when either mum or baby need blood. It is also used as a treatment for cancer and for blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

Whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about donating for the first time, please book an appointment to give blood and save lives. You never know whose life you could save.”

As the first signs of autumn appear, many people swap outdoor picnics and day trips for meals at home and indoor gatherings. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in Anglia to get out in the cooler weather and get cosy at a local blood donor session.

Raft Race

The annual Sheringham Carnival Raft Race which traditionally marks the end of the town’s summer carnival took place at the beginning of this month.

This year’s winning team was from The Lobster pub in Sheringham. The best-dressed award went to the team of mermaids from Sheringham Play Park Revamp group and best raft went to Kevin Webb and Tom Codling from the Wyndham Arms pub.

Happisburgh and Mundesley Coastguard, who competed in a raft made from aircraft fuel tanks, were presented with a special emergency services award.

Financial Advisors: Who to trust? Written by Helen Batten – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr

At Hayes + Storr, we are increasingly being contacted by clients for legal advice in relation to loss of confidence in their financial advisors. As in all professions, including the legal sector, there are good and bad people, but what should clients do when they believe the advice given is inadequate, not tailored to their circumstances or just plain wrong?

Complaint to Financial Conduct Authority Firms and individuals can only conduct regulated financial activities in the UK if they are registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to do so. When engaging a financial advisor, always check their status in the FCA register, which can be found on the organisation’s website.

If you have already engaged a financial advisor regulated by the FCA and are unhappy with their conduct or services, then the FCA provides a service resolving disputes. You may wish to engage a solicitor to assist you in bringing your complaint to the attention of the FCA. The first step is to put your complaint in writing to the financial advisor concerned and ask for the matter to be investigated and for a written response. The financial advisor will have a maximum time period of eight weeks to respond. If not response is received or you are unhappy with the response, you can then contact the Financial Ombudsman Service

(FOS) for investigate the complaint on your behalf.

A complaint to the FOS is a free and independent service that aims to resolve disputes between clients and their financial advisors, but it is not suitable for every case. If you and your solicitor decide to make a complaint, the FOS will consider its content and ask the financial advisor for their version of events before making a decision. However, you should be aware that the parties do not have to accept the decision made by the FOS. Depending on the circumstances of the complaint, it may be more appropriate to make a civil claim in the County Court to recover your losses.

Negligence Claims in the County Court A claim to the County Court is likely to be made on the basis of a financial advisor negligently advising a client to make an unsuitable investment, which has caused loss. The Court will consider whether the advice given by the financial advisor was negligent based on a strict legal test. The Court will want to ensure that the loss caused to the client was directly attributable to the poor advice given. The Court, with assistance from experts, will then calculate the value of the loss suffered. The aim is to put the client back in the situation they would have been in had the poor advice not been given.

The solicitors at Hayes + Storr are available to provide advice on the conduct of financial advisors and where their advice may give rise to either a complaint or a County Court claim. Discussing the matter with our legal professionals often assists in clarifying your concerns and working out a plan of action going forward.

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact our Litigation Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01263 825959. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

I have been manning the phone while Stephanie has taken a well earned holiday and, yes, we have been inundated with yet more kittens. Two were found in Dilham in different places and several days apart but were obviously brother and sister. As we believe a further two were taken to another charity we think all four were abandoned. On the same day they came into care, three were left in a cardboard box on Irene’s doorstep. Fortunately, they were found by her husband returning to the house that evening, otherwise they may not have been found until the following morning. Three more are now being hand reared by Kelly while the two youngest are also being bottled fed by yet another of our fosterers, Lesley. One of these, however, required immediate veterinary treatment (thank you Luke at Westover). TO

care, several are now ready and waiting to be adopted.

In the early years of the branch, we were approached by one of the companies at the Bacton Gas Site as they had a feral colony there. With the help of the staff, the adult cats were all neutered and the kittens came to us for rehoming. Over the years we have supported the cats when they have required veterinary treatment and the company has supported us in Cotton Tail, one of the return in their annual charity awards. With five kittens being hand cats still living on site, the staff, who have reared by Kelly looked after them over the years, were concerned because they would shortly be leaving the site and the building where the cats sheltered was being demolished. Once again they approached us for help and Kelly and Lesley, (the two fosterers mentioned above), have now found a space for them in their stables. This has been just in time, as the last building was due to be demolished as the last cat was caught, and one of their main carers retired. It is a happy outcome for all the cats concerned.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

West Norfolk RSPCA

Ralph is a truly lovely boy and is a great favourite amongst everyone at the Centre. He is approximately six years old, is a Labrador cross and appears to be about 95% Lab!

Poor Ralph came to us from another RSPCA Centre and, after a while spent with us (for absolutely no good reason), I did find him a lovely home, with a single lady who absolutely adored him. She wrote to me about him, shortly after adopting him, saying how much she loved him and "I even love the smell of him". I thought that was lovely, and she was so proud of him, it was fantastic to hear. She sent us a photograph of him all settled in, looking so amazing and I wouldn't have recognised him. He was being such a good boy, and was loving his new home and especially being with his new Mum.

Tragically though it was not to last as his poor Mum suddenly became very seriously ill and was admitted to hospital. Why does life have to be so cruel, to split him and his Mum up.....I could cry for them both. Poor Ralph was transported back to us, from Hertfordshire, and I imagine he couldn't believe it when he found himself back behind a kennel door. We had a wonderful time in the enclosure with Ralph when I originally took his photographs, we had a lovely fuss with him and, at one point, when she stopped stroking him, he was giving For more details please call Beth Lea her his paw, asking her on 01263 478526 or 07443 858005 to stroke him again, which was fantastic to see. Back to School with Animal Magic Dog Club

Each season presents a different set of challenges to the dog owner. Many of us have battled to keep our dogs comfortable through the hot summer months by walking in the cooler mornings and evenings or splashing around in a paddling pool. Now that autumn is around the corner there are some new dangers to be aware of.

When I think of returning to school as a child after the long summer holidays I always think of conkers, they’d be falling from the giant Horse Chestnut trees in abundance.

But did you know that conkers are poisonous to dogs?

Another autumnal danger is the acorn, both are toxic, if swallowed whole could cause a blockage and if chewed their toxins could make your dog very ill indeed. 26

Dogs are naturally curious creatures and can be stimulated by the falling of conkers and acorns - if your dog is a scavenger it’s a good idea to avoid places where they could find these hidden amongst the fallen leaves. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time always seek advice from your vet swiftly.

Autumn does bring some advantages too, bright but cooler days are perfect for getting out and enjoying a walk with your four legged friend. Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham goes back to school for the autumn term in October, offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk. Sheringham Independent 400 September 20th 2014

Court sentence for 80 mile charity bike ride

Simon Court is taking part in a charity bike ride to raise money for the charity that supported his family through the diagnosis and treatment of his wife, Jane.

In 2010, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer after feeling considerable pain. She was diagnosed during her doctor’s appointment, and had to break the news to her three children, one of whom was away at university. “It was horrible. She was in a room filled with people. I told her to grab a good friend and take the phone somewhere quiet.”

Jane’s treatment began with a lumpectomy, and later a mastectomy, but also underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But Jane reacted very badly to the chemotherapy, which made her extremely ill. She required more medical attention, including out-of-hours doctors and anti-sickness injections.

everything that’s happened, and are moving on.

Simon and Tim, their youngest son, will be taking part in the Cambridge to Norwich Bike Ride on 28 September and raising money for Big C. Simon, a self-declared MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra) is excited by the 80mile distance after finding a love for cycling. Tim will be taking part two days after completing the Newbury to London Bike Ride, also for Big C. The family has already raised over £1,300 for the charity, whilst Jane was going through her treatment.

Though the last few years have been tough, the Court family are now pulling together to help give back to a cause that helped them through their most difficult days.

This is the fourth year of the Cambridge Norwich Bike Ride, and this year Big C are aiming bigger. This ride will finish in Earlham Park, over the road from UEA and the Norwich Research Park, where Big C have pledged £250,000 to fund the new Norwich Medical Research Building. This building will

Jane and Simon used Big C Centres to sit and relax while she was in hospital, and to have their questions answered using the Healthy Matters Programme. Her treatments lasted for almost a year, and now her family are drawing a line under

Gresham’s appoints Patrick Hawes as Composer-in-Residence Patrick Hawes is an English composer who has worked with the country’s finest musicians.

He topped the Classical Charts with his album Angel, has composed the Highgrove Suite for the Prince of Wales, and from July 2014 became Gresham’s Composer-in-Residence.

Patrick first visited Gresham’s as an Patrick Hawes Associated Board Examiner in the 1990s and wasimmediately taken with the musical excellence at the school as well as being a former adjudicator at the Senior School’s annual House Music Competition where he says the atmosphere was “electric.”

Patrick will join Gresham’s School in Holt as Composer-in-Residence from July until December 2014. His first task will be to write a new advent carol for the Prep School choir and organ and share in the composition process with pupils at the Prep School – which he hopes will inspire pupils to write their own music! Patrick will also work with GCSE and A level composers at the Senior School.

In addition, participants of this year’s International Britten Music course, an annual summer residential music camp held at Gresham’s Prep, had the unique opportunity of performing a specially commissioned piece of work written by Patrick to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Eventide: In Memoriam Edith Cavell was premiered in Norwich Cathedral on 12 July alongside the English Chamber Orchestra, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas. This performance will also be repeated with the Prep School

Patrick said, "Gresham's has a great musical tradition and it is an honour and a joy to become a small part of that. I am very much looking forward to working with Gresham's musicians and to writing a new Christmas carol for the school. My hope is that I can encourage and inspire pupils to fulfil their true creative potential."

WALK 10 for Marie Curie

On Saturday 30 August Jane & Mike Holmes from Sheringham successfully completed the WALK10 (6.25 mile) challenge on behalf of fund raising for the wonderful Marie Curie Cancer Care Foundation. The Sandringham Walk was a small part of a Nationwide series of WALK10 fund raising events.

On a beautiful summers evening Jane & Mike were part of a 1300 strong ‘army’ of fund raisers who took advantage of the kindness and generosity of Her Majesty by walking around normally unavailable tracts of the Sandringham Estate. The walk was a true challenge and many of the walkers arrived back in darkness aided by torches. Jane & Mike were able, as our photo shows, to complete the challenge ahead of twilight descending. They will be sending a cheque for £600 to the Foundation as their sponsored contribution from friends associated with Sheringham Ramblers and Felbrigg Hall.

The whole evening was managed and controlled superbly by the Marie Curie staff and volunteers and excellent free ‘donated’ entertainment over picnics, after the walk was completed, finished off a truly excellent evening for a cause which is so vital in the challenges presented by the Big C.
