New look for NHS patient transport service
The NHS patient transport service for Norfolk (excluding Great Yarmouth) has undergone a new look. The telephone access number has also changed.
From 1 October the service will be provided by ERS Medical. ERS Medical is a major force in providing non-emergency ambulance services to the NHS across the country.
ERS Medical is already a familiar name in the area as its courier division has been operating around Norfolk since July 2012. Its fleet of courier vehicles service the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn as well as GP surgeries, dentists and podiatrists in the region.
ERS Medical was awarded the 5-year contract to provide the service across all of Norfolk, excluding Great Yarmouth and Waveney, by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Norwich, South Norfolk, West Norfolk and North Norfolk.
The service carries patients who are registered with a GP Practice in Norwich, South, West or North Norfolk, who have a medical need and who are unable to travel without assistance. About 115,000 patient journeys were undertaken in 2013/14.
For patients there will be no change in service. If eligible, patients will still be taken to their appointment via patient transport vehicles. And regular patients will recognise familiar faces because many of the staff have transferred to ERS Medical.
The telephone number to book journeys has changed. Patients who believe they may be eligible and who need to make a booking will now call 0333 240 4100.
Mark Taylor, Chief Executive Officer North Norfolk CCG said “We are pleased to have re-procured a contract to run this service in compliance with public sector legislation. There were a number of bidders but ERS Medical was chosen because of the quality of the service offered and importantly, the value for taxpayers’ money.
“It will be good to work with ERS Medical and we have confidence that together we will continue an excellent and valued NHS service to our patients.”
Chief Brendan Fatchett, Managing Director for ERS Medical, said “We are delighted to expand our offering in Norfolk and build on the existing services we’ve been delivering to the area for a number of years. We look
forward to continuing to work with the Norfolk community and delivering a service which is focussed on patient care.”
ERS Medical is also working with Voluntary Norfolk to bring the ‘Car Link’ Volunteer Drivers’ Scheme back into operation. The Scheme will recruit and train volunteer drivers to transport patients and clients to health, social care and wellbeing appointments. Additionally, its national apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with YMCA Training, will see ERS Medical offering career opportunities locally to candidates aged 18 to 24. The scheme presents an opportunity to work within the healthcare sector on either a one or two-year fixed term contract while gaining Level 2 and 3 NVQ qualifications. Visit www.ersmedical.co.uk/apprenticeships or www.ersmedical.co.uk/volunteers for more information.

Reg Grimes
To mark the anniversary of the death of Reg Grimes on 11 September, former Chairman of the Sheringham and District Society, Mayor Tricia Brooks visited the Peter Coke Shell Gallery where a memorial plaque to commemorate Reg’s contribution to both the Society and Town had been erected.
Tricia met with family members, as well as members of the Sheringham and District Society and volunteers at the Shell Gallery and the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre.
The Mayor said “Reg was my friend and indeed a true friend of this town. It is a very special honour to be asked to say a few words about him.
For over 15 years Reg, as Chairman, was the guiding light of the Sheringham and District Society, pointing out and campaigning for things that would enhance and benefit the town, and help to retain the character of Sheringham. These include:
• initiating environmental conservation projects such as the purchase of the Black Poplar trees for planting on the Back Common, bulbs and shrubs for the entrance to Churchill Crescent, the clearance of Upper Sheringham Churchyard after years of neglect and a donation in support of Old Wood;
• agitating for a town museum which led to the formation of the Sheringham Museum Trust;
• setting up a heritage walk with blue plaques on significant historic buildings and encouraging research into the history of Sheringham and Beeston Regis; and
• keeping a watchful eye on planning matters and raising concerns where appropriate.
His lasting legacies are though The Fisherman's Heritage Centre and The Peter Coke Shell Gallery, which are here to be valued and enjoyed by both residents and visitors. Reg oversaw the renovation of the former
fishing sheds buildings on Westcliff and had the foresight to realise what an asset to the town, with its unique collection of creations made of shells, the Shell Gallery would become. From a slow start the Shell Gallery had over 11,500 visitors last year, a staggering 40% increase on the previous year and nearly double the number two years ago. The Fishermen’s Heritage Centre also saw similar numbers.
Reg’s achievements were based upon a wide range of skills, underpinned by a commitment to our community. In the Society’s newsletter earlier this year a volunteer in the Shell Gallery (Chris Player) expressed her appreciation for Reg’s equally important, personal qualities, such as humour, sensitivity, patience and encouragement of/belief in others. These qualities make up the man I knew, a man who I was proud to call a friend
Reg certainly left a legacy and it is our duty to ensure we continue to strive to keep Sheringham the special town he loved so much. Thank you all for coming and especially Amanda, Chantelle and Simon, family members.”

North Norfolk Jazz
Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) returned on 21 September with an inspiring and successful performance by the Simon Brown Trio. The group played a range of music by composers as diverse as Pat Metheny, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Kenny Wheeler that highlighted its versatility. The planned programme continues on Sunday 19 October when the Pinewood Saxophone Quartet takes its distinctive style and sound to this delightful venue. The ensemble was formed in 2003 by four of East Anglia’s best saxophone players and its repertoire is wide-ranging. You can expect every type of jazz from the 1920’s to the present day, with a hint of tango and celtic roots. The line-up is: Martin Thomas (soprano saxophone), Anna Parker (alto saxophone), Martin Eaton
(tenor saxophone) and Christine Godfrey (baritone saxophone). The performance starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 from the box office or on-line at www.sheringham littletheatre.com
We also remind you that the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band continues its monthly gig at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, on Sunday 5 October from 1.30pm. These sessions started as a “one-off” to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 but was so popular that the venue is now seen as one of the most popular traditional jazz venues in Norfolk. Admission is free and you can just drop in for a drink or eat in the restaurant or garden room. If you would like a table for lunch, however, it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600. Dates up to the New Year are: 2 November, 7 December and 4 January.

Sheringham Methodist Ladies Association
Our meeting on 23 September was opened by President, Reverend Jackie Smith who welcomed a visitor. Pat Glover gave us "a thought for the day" and our speaker was Mrs Sandra Thompson from Macmillan Cancer Support. The Organisation began in 1911 when Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer and his pain and suffering moved Douglas so much that he founded the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer. In 1924 the Society was renamed the National Society for Cancer Relief, aiming to provide practical help to both patients and their families. In 1977 the name was changed to Macmillan Cancer Relief and in 2006 to Macmillan Cancer Support, in order to help people understand what the Society aims to do. In 2013 it was voted the number one in the Charity Brand Index. Nearly half of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime, and the wonderful work goes on in fundraising all the time. The aim is that no one should face cancer alone, and that the necessary support will be available from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and beyond, a constant source of support enabling patients to take control of their lives again.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CONKERS
Do children still play conkers? Or is the game a victim of Health and Safety worries? It would be sad if children have stopped as conkers has a long history. The first mention of the game is in 1821 when snail shells or hazelnuts were used but from the 1850s horse chestnuts became fashionable. Conkers were also known as obblyonkers, cheggies or cheesers.
This is the ideal time of the year for children to plant tree seeds to learn all about growing and the link between seeds and trees. So take your children for a walk in the park or the countryside to collect some seeds such as conkers or acorns. Check the seeds do not have any holes in them – if they do it may mean that insect larvae are inside eating them.
Place some crocks at the base of a pot, then nearly fill it with compost. Ask your children to plant their seed about 2cm (0.8in) deep, then cover it over with compost and water it well. The pots can then be placed in a shady place in the garden for the winter. Make sure that the children check them from time to time to make sure the pots do not dry out. Explain how it will be necessary to wait until spring to see if their seed has sprouted. The plant should be repotted as it grows. It is worth planting several seeds just in case some don’t germinate.
If children do not collect conkers nowadays, the position was very different 100 years ago when in the autumn of 1917, a notice appeared on the walls of classrooms and scout huts across Britain. ‘Groups of scholars and boy scouts are being organised to collect conkers... This collection is invaluable war work and is very urgent. Please encourage it’. It was not explained why the conkers were needed but the children were offered 7s 6d for every hundredweight they handed in.
The secret, when finally revealed was that they were needed to help with the production of acetone an essential part of the propellant for shells and bullets known as cordite. Before the war acetone had been produced from wood, mainly imported from the USA, but it was soon realised that an alternative domestic supply was needed and a Jewish scientist Chaim Weitzmann developed a process
Young People had a fantastic, free summer of fun with North Norfolk Youth Hubs
North Norfolk Youth Hubs had a fantastic summer of activities with young people from Cromer, Sheringham, undesley and Stalham. The Youth Hubs is a Youth Advisory Board funded project that started last year, aimed at providing young people in rural areas with access to free, positive activities.
Youth workers from MAP—a young persons’ charity based in Norwich and Great Yarmouth—developed a range of activities for young people that help them learn new skills, build self-esteem, and raise confidence. Providing a safe and welcoming space for young people to socialise in is at the heart of the Hubs’ aims.
Activities included a four-day vintage photography workshop with Cromer museum, a paintballing excursion, a photo walk, a trip to Barton Turf to learn about the broads, a graffiti art session and a relaxing walk around Sheringham Park.
Now that the summer is over, the Hubs will be starting up again from 4-6pm at Stalham Youth Club and Oddfellows’ Hall in Sheringham every other Thursday, and at Merchant’s Place in Cromer every second Wednesday.
involving the use of maize and potatoes to produce acetone at factories in Dorset and Norfolk. Together the two factories produced 90,000 litres a year, enough to feed the seemingly insatiable demand for cordite. (The British Army and Royal Navy fired 240,000,000 million shells between 1914 and 1918.)
By 1917 the maize and potatoes were needed to feed the hungry people of Britain and another source of acetone was needed and Weitzmann suggested that conkers might be the answer and the appeal to boys and girls to collect horse chestnuts went out. Production was centred in Kings Lynn but there were technical problems and delays and the process was never as successful as hoped.
So did conkers help win the war? Well they certainly played a small part but perhaps the most surprising outcome was that Weitzmann, a leading Zionist, was rewarded by the British Government for his work on producing acetone by their support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine (The Balfour Declaration). When the state of Israel was finally established in 1948 Chaim Weitzmann became its first president.
So when you encourage your children to plant their conkers you can also include a bit of history and tell them of the role of this humble seed. Bob Wilkinson

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Yet more kittens have arrived in care, all from outside situations and most of which needing to be hand reared. Stephanie, Kelly, Irene and Lesley are all now bottle feeding kittens and I can honestly say we have never had so many at one time before. There are also more kittens outside which need to be caught before they become feral and eight cats to be trapped to be neutered. As volunteers we only have a limited amount of time to commit to these situations and do need to rely heavily on the help and co-operation of people living where the cats are situated. Fortunately, in most instances, people are only too happy to help as, at the end of the day, they will benefit. It is usually a case of asking them to identify where the cats/kittens are living, set a trap to catch them, and ring us once they have been caught. Once caught, the kittens come into care and we take the adult cats of both sexes to the vets and get them neutered. Although it only takes a few moments to set a trap and to give us a call once something has been caught, it does mean a far bigger saving of time from our point of view.
At present we have two traps in the garden of one lady and have recently caught one kitten and one cat there. We have already taken 12 kittens from this area so you can imagine how quickly the problem could have escalated if they had not come into care. Four of the 12 kittens were actually caught in another lady’s garden earlier in the year. She and her partner also managed to trap the mother who was neutered and returned to the area.
If she had not been caught she would have had at least one more litter by now and the three female kittens would probably have been pregnant too.
Apart from all the kittens now in care, we should not forget all the lovely adult cats in care that are also looking for a new home. Their ages range from a few months to the oldest, which are roughly 10 years old, so if you would prefer an older cat there are plenty to choose from.
Tansy and Dill, the two Dilham stray kittens If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

North Norfolk Photographic Society North Norfolk Photographic Society welcomed Dave Stewart LBPPA for a second time. Confessing to be a ‘photoholic’ - he just loves taking photographs and can’t stop doing it - his presentation was called ‘Pleasing Myself‘.
After some years as an amateur Dave turned professional. He reckons that ‘doing what I like doing and being paid for it can’t be bad!’ He showed pictures from his very varied portfolio. Dave was a race photographer
with Jet Skier Magazine for some years, and as well as action pictures of jet skis (often not the right way up but always with lots of spray) there were speedway, sand racing, vintage aircraft, pretty girls and landscapes.
In particular, Dave showed some portrait pictures and photographs of models using a wedding dress he had purchased, with the models posing in some very unusual places such as Holkham beach in the water and also

As the summer slowly fades the big news from the Grove is luanch of our Autumn menu, running from 9th October. It’s packed with our favourite dishes with a slightly mellower twist – North Sea scallops with pea and lime risotto, the finest Icarus Hines steaks and of course John Davies’ Cromer lobster – and it also features some returning friends, including Norfolk quail and pheasant. Lost Toy
Of course no menu is complete without a delicious dessert and this is one that the kitchen team have been experimenting with (liberally!) for weeks now... An added bonus of these pots is that they are gluten free – as are many of our desserts (our gorgeous cheesecake, for example). We look forward to seeing you – and of course our Christmas party menu is now available, please do book quickly as places are going fast! The Grove, 95 Overstrand Road, Cromer, 01263512412

Singer-Songwriter’s Epic UK Tour... in a Milk Float! North-Norfolk singer-songwriter Paul Thompson is planning a unique musical tour in 2015 to promote the release of his forthcoming CD ‘Lost in the Land of Midnight Sun’.
Starting from his home near Sheringham, Paul will be travelling in a specially converted milk float almost 2,000 miles around Britain during summer 2015, and the proceeds of the tour will be used to set up a community music project.
Performing at music festivals, centres for green technology, traditional music venues and ‘off-grid’ locations such as National Trust Parks, Paul will be travelling 30-50 miles per day with a whopping top speed of 15 mph. The specially converted milk float will double up as tour bus and performance space, with solar panels powering stage lighting and music gear.
Paul is hoping to raise the necessary funds for the milk float conversion by Christmas, and
has started a Crowdfunding campaign from his website. Fans can get involved in a number of ways, including joining the tour for a day or organising their own House Concert, and there is also an advertising opportunity for local businesses to put their name and logo on the milk float. Following the tour, the milk float will be used as a mobile arts café, recording and workshop space to bring music to rural parts of Norfolk.
travel in one”. After doing some research, Paul found a company in Oxfordshire who specialise in converting milk floats for the TV and film industry, and who will be doing the conversion ready for the tour. Paul will be keeping a blog and video diary, doing live radio phone-ins, and is also hoping to appear on the Channel 4 TV series George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. Further information about the tour and Crowdfunding campaign can be found at Paul’s website, www.paulsmusic.co.uk.
“I had the idea for the tour after watching an episode of Father Ted,” says Paul. “I wanted to think of an original idea to promote my new CD, and also find a way of touring that was environmentally sound. There’s a really funny episode of Father Ted with a milk float in, and I just started wondering how far you could
Weather with Ned Nimbus
Time to look ahead to the end of the year. The past three months came out as forecast with August taking the booby prize with a fair amount of unsettled weather following an early stirring up by ex hurricane 'Bertha'. October should give us another fine month overall very much in line with predictions made five to six months ago . These forecast are initially put together at that time out and firmed up, if necessary, closer to publication.
November will give us more a mix of weather but still, overall, a bias in favour of fair conditions and average or above average temperatures. December is likely to continue in the same vein but high pressure to the north and slipping slowly to the west of us will bring in winds from the north or north-west, eventually more unsettled weather will gain the upper hand. An initial look into the start of 2015 indicates an early reminder we are in the middle of winter and a drop of temperature, lasting for some time is a distinct probability.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB On Thursday 18 September, at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 24 members and three guests, all of whom we hope will be joining the Club shortly. Our speaker, Flt Lt Gary Walker MBE, joined us after lunch to give a most informative slide-show presentation on RAF Marham.
Marham air-base was first set up as an airfield in 1916, as a fighter base for defence against Zepplin attack. It was closed in 1919 and reopened again in 1937. During WW2, Marham was home to a number of different aircraft including Lancasters and Lincolns and then, in the 1950s, moved into the nuclear age with Vbombers, later becoming the home of the Victor tanker force, which was so memorably involved in the Falklands. Today, it is involved in several areas around the world, employing state-of-the-art aerial surveillance, reconnaissance and attack systems.
Three squadrons of Tornado GR4s are based at RAF Marham, together with a number of vital training, intelligence, and maintenance operations which also include business partners such as BAE Systems, Rolls Royce and Serco. RAF Marham is set to move even further ahead when it takes delivery of the first Lightning 2 aircraft in 2018, with a great deal of building work taking place at the Station, in order to accommodate them.
In excess of 3000 service personnel, reserves and MoD staff are stationed at Marham, which, together with approximately 5000 dependents and up to 1000 contractors, make up a community of nearly 10,000 , contributing a large amount to the economy of West Norfolk. In thanking Gary for his excellent presentation, Dave Vickery said that so few of us had realised the magnitude and importance of RAF Marham as a front line airbase. Dealing with Club business matters, the Chairman drew Members’ attention to the Special Meeting which had been called for at our last Meeting. After discussion, proposed changes to the Club’s Rules and Constitution were put to the vote and accepted nem con. He reminded Members that those wishing to attend the joint meeting with Holt Probus on November 6 should advise Hon Sec Ken Murray at the next meeting, which will be at The Dales Hotel on Thursday`16 October when our guest speaker will be Chris Elliott of the Benjamin Foundation. If you would like to join us for lunch, please call Bill Day on 01263 826083.

COAST Coming Soon
Known locally as COAST, the Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literary Festival is coming soon in autumn half term. The festival kicks off on 24th October with an evening featuring acclaimed blues musician Ron Sayer at the White Horse in Overstrand, followed by an exceptional week of exhibitions, music, poetry, dancing and fun on the theme of 'War and Peace'. Highlights of this year’s festival are an exhibition of photographs from Sir Michael Savory's personal archive at Muckleburgh, two special afternoons of poetry at Cromer’s Virginia Court Hotel, a war-time sing along at Sheringham Little Theatre Hub, creative writing and filmmaking workshops, a musical afternoon with the Honeybirds at the Sea Marge Hotel in Overstrand and a family circus event in Cromer Community Hall. Sally Wallace, Chair of COAST says “This year, building on the successes of the last 4 years, we are holding two exciting competitions to encourage creativity amongst our communities. Entries in the short film competition will be shown at a special screening, with tapas, on 28th at Sheringham Little Theatre. The 40+ entries to the poppy painting competition, showing a vast range of ideas, styles and content, will be on display at the Atrium in North Walsham from 24th October. We look forward to seeing you soon.” The full programme can be found on the COAST website at casaf.co.uk. If you particularly want to attend an event make sure you book your tickets soon - the Jarrold Literary Lunch is already sold out! In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

1940S WEEKEND
The ever popular Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton was host to another successful 1940s-themed evening on Saturday 20th September.
The group known as Groovy Gazza Productions preformed their act a Salute to the 1940s, packed full of songs and variety of a bygone era.
The show itself features a very talented company of six professional entertainers. Each established in their own field. Tributes are paid to Vera Lynn, George Formby, Gracie fields, Al Jolson and the Andrews Sisters.
The evening consisted of a three-course 1940s-styled menu with a modern day twist, colourfully decorated tables complete with union jack hand waving flags. The Runton Suite was decorated with bunting, sandbags and Spitfires hanging from the ceiling the whole

Dear Margaret,
Yes, it’s fun to dress up in the style of the day, as many people did - some quite splendidly and attractively - for The 40s Weekend in Sheringham, and have ‘a good time.’ It also made for ‘a good day out’ and, for the town, it was ‘good for business.’
evening was a wonderful tribute to the 40s and very heart warning it makes you proud to be British.

But what concerns me are the increasingly militaristic aspects of this event, such as army vehicles parading through the streets, people in uniforms carrying guns and even an old fighter plane flying overhead. Are we really saying, by these displays and our implicit support for them, that war is ‘a good thing’?
War is violent, bloody and murderous and, in my humble opinion, should never be celebrated. Of course, we must stand up to bullies, tyrants and dictators, wherever we have allowed them, willingly or not, to enter into positions of power and control.
But settling our most serious disputes by slaughtering each other is the sign of a very immature civilisation, especially when we, the so-called winners, go on to glorify such behaviour, as we seem to be doing here.
By all means, have a weekend nostalgically enjoying the fashion of the forties or, for that matter, any other decade. But, please, leave the weapons behind and let’s move on!
Yours sincerely,
Colin Millen, The One World Transition Party Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people involved in organising such a wonderful weekend, especially the residents and visitors who were dressed in the 40s period. It made Sheringham a very special place to be. Regards,

There is no glory in war. No glory in sending men to die. There is no glory in blood soaked mud. Where is the glory in the frailties of politicians And Generals sending men to die? Take time you leaders into war. Take time and ask, ' What am I doing?' Then, having paused, look behind you At the men you have lined up to die. And think again. Chris Hargest

MP set to raise over £6,000 for local health charities after 100 mile bike ride
North Norfolk MP completed a 100 mile sponsored bike ride at the end of last month to support local health charities. His efforts are set to raise over £6,000.
“It is a relief to have completed the ride in one piece but I am thrilled by the donations that have been made to support local health charities. The generosity of local people who have sponsored my ride is truly humbling.”
Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received so far is over £6,143 and with Gift Aid added they will be worth over £6,500 to local charities.
“The second day of the tour was a real slog because of the appalling weather,” said Mr Lamb. “I am particularly grateful to the staff at Wells Community Hospital who took pity on me and dried my clothes for me and warmed me up with a cup of tea!”
Sponsors included publisher and broadcaster Iain Dale who was Norman Lamb’s Conservative opponent at the 2005 General Election. Mr Dale encouraged Mr Lamb with a message to ‘Keep on Troshin’’ on his Just Giving web page. The 100 mile cycle route took in community health facilities at North Walsham, Cromer, Kelling and Wells as well as visits to the Break shop at Stalham and the Break headquarters in Sheringham.
You can still sponsor Mr Lamb via his website www.normanlamb.org.uk
FREE Spooky Fun at Bure Valley Railway!
Throughout the half term holiday, 25th October to 2nd November 2014, the Bure Valley Railway will be holding its popular children’s event, “The Spooky Express”. Trains will operate throughout each day from both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations (see timetable). A children’s competition to see how many spooky items can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this themed event. Also, the Railway’s resident Bear will be dressed up for the occasion to welcome each train at Aylsham Station.
To make this a truly family friendly event, the Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum of 2 children per adult, train only). No prior booking required.
Susan Munday, Business Manager and organiser of this event, says, “Children of all ages can enjoy lots of spooky fun without it being too scary!”

New information board reveals secret role of Beeston Hill
The secret past of Beeston Hill in Sheringham has been revealed, with a new information board allowing visitors to learn about its important role during World War II. Campaigned for by the Sheringham Enhancement Group, the new board was kindly funded by the East of England Co-op and designed by local business Graphic Edge. Mayor of Sheringham, Patricia Brooks and Phil Hartwell, Director for the East of England Co-op unveiled the new information board atop Beeston Hill. It tells the story of the octagonal ‘Y’ Station, the base of which can still be seen today. Once a small and busy unit, it was manned mainly by German speaking Wrens. Their role was to intercept radio signals from the E-Boats, gathering useful intelligence and, when possible, obtaining bearings on them. Christian Bone, Head of Member and Community Services for the East of England Co-op, said: “With a long history serving communities across Norfolk – including during wartime – we are proud of our heritage and so understand the importance of ensuring stories like this are passed down through the generations.”
Vote “Lighthouse” for Tesco community funding
Lighthouse Charity Trust is one of the five charities in the running for a £5000 community grant from Tesco’s “Helping Hand” scheme. The folk at Lighthouse are now appealing for locals to drop into Lighthouse Café, to see what the centre has to offer, and to vote for them in the poll. The Lighthouse Trust is affiliated to the Lighthouse Community Church, which celebrated its first birthday on September 21 with a special gift day and barbecue. The celebration was simply called ONE, with the ONE theme running throughout the morning meeting. A free community barbecue followed, attended by around 150 people in Lighthouse grounds. There were also ONE deals in Lighthouse Café each day that week. The Lighthouse Charity Trust works for the social, educational and general well-being of all age photo courtesy of Gareth Gabriel at groups and backgrounds, helping seniors, the lonely and the vulnerable. One of the fastest growing www.angelusmedia.co.uk aspects of their work is with children and young people, the group is now the largest provider of Children and youth activities in the Sheringham district. The grant would give the Trust the chance to buy new equipment and games to make the clubs they run even more exciting and engaging for local people. The Trust is expanding quickly so this competition is a timely opportunity for them. Free Help for Job Seekers “This day of celebration has rounded off an amazing year for Lighthouse” said Pastor Bryan Thursday Mornings 10.00am – 12Noon Pickard. “We have made considerable advances in the ways we are able to serve our local At the Salvation Army Hall community, and the equipment we are seeking to buy with this funding will enable us extend Cremer Street this even further”. The Tesco Sheringham Community Fund was set up in 2012 to accompany Sheringham the launch of Tesco’s new store in the town. So far the Fund has given out over £30,000 to local community groups and charities in the Sheringham area. Write and print Search for Computer jobs online skills People can vote using forms available in the Sheringham Tesco store, and also in local papers. your C.V. Voting closes on Friday October 24. Campaigners call for privatisation of North Norfolk’s NHS service to be halted NHS campaigners have called for the privatisation of North Norfolk’s NHS services to be halted. The call comes after it was revealed the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has budgeted for nearly £7m in private contracts over the next financial year.
The Labour Party in North Norfolk – who obtained the information through a Freedom of Information request – has said that voters need a proper debate about the future of the NHS and that the British public have never given their consent for the outsourcing.
National statistics from the Labour Party shows that NHS spending on private and other providers has gone through the £10bn barrier for the first time.
The total figure budgeted for private companies in North Norfolk stands at £6.8m with the CCG adding some contracts do not have a fixed contract value and are completed on the basis of work completed. Denise Burke, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “The public have never given a mandate for the government to carve up the NHS and for CCGs to privatisation our health service in this way. They even pledged no top down re-organisation of the NHS.
Since then for 2014 alone almost £7m has been earmarked in North Norfolk to go to private providers, and the CCG admits for some contracts there may be no limit to the spending.
We want to see the Health Ministers halt this outsourcing until after the General Election next May so the British public can have their say, and so the right values of the NHS can be returned to its heart.”

After a busy summer with a trip to the Time and Tide museum in Great Yarmouth, stalls on the carnival car boot, organising the Mad Hatters tea party and the children's fancy dress competition and finally the Vintage Tea party for Carnival, we were ready for a rest. However it was not to be as we were also busy moving into our new venue - Sheringham Community Centre.
Our first night there was a resounding success with many new faces appearing interested in joining, and our speaker Pat Williamson with her array of vintage hats and memorabilia really got us in the mood for the 40s weekend which followed afterwards. We had our own star hats in a favourite hat parade which was won by Louise Brock.
October 13th sees us going in a totally different direction with Stuart Offord, ex-Royal Protection officer, who will no doubt fascinate us with his tales of Hostage Negotiation. With the WI Centenary Baton coming to North Norfolk on 5 November and nights out to Rev de Cuba planned, the Autumn looks as busy as the summer was. Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings on the second Monday of the month at Sheringham Community Centre - doors open 6.45pm and meeting starts at 7.15pm.

Dear Margaret,
I agree with Mrs Gould that the paintings by Colin Seal are magnificent. I take my daily walk along the East promenade and they are a constant source of enjoyment. However, it is a great pity that one is subjected to the stench of sewage at the East corner of the Mo 365 days per year. Surely the Council can do something to rectify this. It does not seem to have anything to do with tide or weather as it is constantly there. Rod Greene, Sheringham

How to Save Tax
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Any Inheritance Tax saving scheme that looks ‘too good to be true’ almost certainly is. There is a politician-lead crackdown on tax avoidance scheme. This is more aimed at the super-wealthy than the man in the street with money in the bank or a house that is worth a bit, but impacts on them too.
Whatever you own, or once owned but still enjoy the benefit of, as well as anything you have given away in the last seven years is fair-game for the taxman when you die. I have written articles on using the various small annual exemptions and allowances in the recent past and those used consistently are beneficial.
Joking apart, spending is a good way of saving tax but spending too much can leave you financially-stranded at the time when you are most vulnerable.
Trusts are useful but are not a universal panacea. What might work to protect assets from being assessable for the cost of care might well not work for tax-planning. Social Services and the Local Authority apply different tests to those of the taxman.
ZULU WARS!
Inheritance Tax is saved for the benefit of one’s heirs and of course a solicitor has to be very clear who their client is. The solicitor’s duty is to their client and not to the wider family (other than in a very secondary way).
Giving your house to your children only ‘works’ for Inheritance Tax planning if there is no ‘gift with reservation of benefit’, which generally means that you need to pay a market rent; whereas, an asset protection trust (where your children own your home but allow you to live there rent-free) can still work for care fee protection if you do it long enough before nursing or other care is required. It all depends on intention at the time of the gift and is looked at together with all the facts and circumstances. This may change in the future as the cost of care spirals ever upwards and Local Authorities have less money to go round to spend on care of the elderly. Norfolk is particularly as risk of having to take a tougher line as we have a higher than the national average proportion of older people.
Remember always that it is only when you are worth more than £325,000 (or £650,000 in the case of a married couple, or civil partners) that Inheritance Tax will be paid on your death.
When the Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club met at The Links Hotel for its monthly meeting on 2 September, the Chairman, Geoff Mather welcomed two new members. Following the usual lunch, former Regimental Sergeant Major John Needham gave a fascinating and entertaining talk on the Zulu Wars. He illustrated his talk with his large collection of uniforms and weapons from both sides of the conflict, correcting some of the myths about the wars which have been promulgated in books and films.
Following the talk, a vote of thanks was proposed by club member Tony Lyons, but such was the interest in the subject that members were still asking questions and examining John’s military memorabilia as the meeting disbursed.
Probus Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired Professional and Business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining PROBUS, telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett for further information on 01263 826881.

There is no one-size-
fits-all answer. Advice must be tailored to the individual and their family and finances. Even hard-bitten tax advisors appreciate that schemes which save tax, but at personal inconvenience, are often not the answer. The important thing is to take advice early while you still have the health and energy to implement arrangements, to do this before a care home becomes anything close to a reality, and (using your crystal ball) more than seven years before you die.

Second national award win for Council’s legal team
eastlaw, North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) legal team has been named ‘In-house Legal Team of the Year’ at the Halsbury Legal Awards 2014.
The award is the second national accolade for the team, and comes hot on the heels of them being declared winners of the ‘Legal Services team’ category at the prestigious MJ Achievement Awards in June.
The eastlaw team saw off stiff competition from other entrants who ranged from small public sector bodies to large, multi-national organisations. Vying for the ‘In-house Legal Team of the Year’ award alongside eastlaw were Dell, Kent County Council, Simplyhealth, OneSavings Bank and thetrainline.com. The Halsbury awards are a celebration of
excellence in the law and the legal profession. They celebrate the values of the legal community and recognise and reward those who have made an exceptional contribution.
The trophy was awarded to the team at a ceremony hosted by comedian Marcus Brigstocke and was attended by some of the most talented and highly regarded names in the legal world.
Cllr. Rhodri Oliver, NNDC’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet portfolio holder for Legal Services added “Congratulations to eastlaw for winning this important award. eastlaw demonstrates what can be achieved by a small district council, focussing on the quality of its service and the outcomes it delivers for the community, whilst at the same time innovating.”
Emma Duncan, NNDC’s Head of Legal Services, said “I am so delighted at what my team has achieved. eastlaw has gone from strength to strength. We take pride and enjoyment in what we do and it is lovely to have this recognition.”
The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in its innovative ways of helping non-for profit organisations, setting up the coastshare group and bringing down costs.
Council to host evening for prospective councillors
Do you want to make a difference in your community but are unsure how to go about it? Are there things that you would like to achieve or problems you would like to sort out for the sake of your local area? North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is hosting a free event on Wednesday 15 October, 6.30pm – 8pm at its Holt Road offices in Cromer for anyone interested in becoming a candidate and who would like to find out more about what being a councillor involves.
Prospective candidates are being encouraged to attend the event to learn about how the council works and will have the chance to chat to serving District Councillors who will be able to offer an insight into the role of a local councillor and what it is like to represent a local community.
The next elections for all 48 seats (representing 34 wards) on North Norfolk District Council will take place on Thursday 7 May 2015.

Norman Lamb meets rail chiefs to discuss Greater Anglia services
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb and Liberal Democrat County Councillor Eric Seward recently met with key figures from Network Rail and Greater Anglia in Norwich to discuss the future of rail services in the East of England. Mr Lamb and Councillor Seward raised their concerns about the mainline service from Norwich to London, highlighting recent problems with the reliability of the service. They emphasised the absolute need for the new franchise to include rolling stock on the line.
The meeting also discussed the Norwich to Sheringham line - Councillor Seward emphasised the need for more regular services and station improvements. Since 2002, annual usage of the Bittern Line has increased from 461,000 passengers a year to 833,000, with most of the increase coming from passengers at Cromer, Sheringham, and North Walsham.
The new franchise for Greater Anglia services will begin in October 2016, with companies invited to bid in August 2015.
Commenting after the meeting, Norman Lamb said “I know that many people in North Norfolk have been frustrated by service problems on the Norwich to London mainline, and I emphasised to Network Rail and Greater Anglia the need to improve the situation. Looking to the future, it is absolutely essential that the new franchise for the service includes provision for new rolling stock on the line to bring this service up to modern standards. I will continue to lobby on this issue with other Norfolk MPs. I am also going to ask for a meeting with the Rail Minister in Westminster to emphasise to him the importance of the Bittern Line for the local economy. I am determined to secure the best possible deal for North Norfolk as part of the franchise process – I recognise how important rail services are for many local people.”
Councillor Eric Seward commented “More regular services on the Sheringham to Norwich line could provide a real boost to the local economy, as well as relieving pressure at the busiest times of the day – particular on the stretch from North Walsham to Norwich. Together with Norman, I will continue to make the case for proper recognition of the importance of the Bittern Line service as part of the franchise renewal.”

Holt Rugby Club celebrates Big Society Fund grant award
Holt Rugby Football Club (Holt RFC) players and spectators celebrated the completion of works to improve the club’s toilets facilities with North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Deputy Leader, Rhodri Oliver, at a recent derby match at Bridge Road.
The club was awarded a grant of £12,500 from the Big Society Fund (BSF) to contribute towards phase one of the ‘Clubhouse Redevelopment Project’ which the BSF Panel agreed was essential to support the club’s viability and growth. The improvements were determined following the club’s extensive consultation with players, spectators and other users of the facilities.
The programme was focused on improving the
toilets which now offer brand new toilets for men and ladies, a modern disabled toilet and baby-changing facilities, and disabled access. The club is confident that the much needed improvements will benefit players and Holt RFC staff and will encourage an increase in numbers of people attending the many social activities that it hosts.
Guy Roper, Holt Rugby Club’s Chairman said “I am delighted with the new toilet facilities. The Big Society Fund grant has enabled us to make really positive changes which I am sure will benefit everyone who visits Holt Rugby Club.”
Rhodri Oliver, NNDC’s Deputy Leader, added “I am really impressed with the new toilet
facilities, and it should not be underestimated just how important they are to those who use the club.
“I am delighted that NNDC’s Big Society Fund has been able to support Holt RFC in providing better facilities for not just its members, but for the wider community who can hire the club to host business or social events.”
The total cost of the project is expected to be £85,000. Holt RFC has launched its own fundraising campaign including a ‘buy a brick’ initiative to support further improvements to the club.
North Norfolk Hockey Club
North Norfolk Hockey Club, based at Cromer Academy is searching for female hockey players to join first and second teams. Now is a great time to join as the season is about to start. Training takes place on Mondays 7.30pm – 9pm and matches are on Saturdays.
The 1st XI had a successful season (as North Walsham Hockey Club) last year, gaining promotion to East Div 1N and are looking to boost the squad after losing players to injury, pregnancy and university.
We would love to hear from anyone who currently does or who used to play at school or college, is looking for a new challenge or wants to play at a higher level. All welcome! Contact Charlotte Fiske 07810 821082 or email charlotte_else@yahoo.co.uk or jotodd.jt@gmail.com
