North Norfolk Speakers Club Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest

North Norfolk Speakers Club recently held a Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest in North Walsham. The event was well supported by members and guests, and the evening was enjoyed by all.

Stuart Richards was awarded first place in the Humorous Speech Contest for his cleverly entertaining and original story – ‘The Extraordinary Tale of the Queen and her Bed’.

‘Competitions are always a challenge’, said Stuart, ‘but they do help to focus and hone speaking skills and gain experience in speaking to larger and varied audiences’.

‘Big Push’ for Y14-2014 appeal a massive success Continued from front cover...

The total for the Y14:2014 Appeal, which aims to raise £100,000 for our 102 year old J15/Y14 steam locomotive now stands at a whopping £87000. This latest burst will allow work to continue on the locomotive, which is now in the advanced stages of overhaul in Bury, Lancashire.

The locomotive’s boiler has now been successfully steam tested and several intricate and complex components which have had to be made from scratch using traditional techniques have now been completed. These include parts of the locomotive’s motion and traditionally forged chains and drawhooks between the locomotive and tender.

Humorous Speech Contest Chair David McNaughter (far left) with winner Stuart Richards and Table Topics Contest Chair David Ley (far Right) with winner Clive Willet.

Clive Willet won the Table Topics Contest, speaking on the subject - ‘Are DIY projects to be applauded or avoided? ’Table Topics, unlike prepared speeches, require the contestant to speak impromptu with no prior warning of the subject.‘Being able to speak ‘off the cuff’ is a really useful skill to have, whether in business or everyday situations’, Clive said.

North Norfolk Speakers Club meets on alternate Wednesdays, 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue, North Walsham.

For further information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk, email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or contact Gillian 01692 650250. Guests and new members are always warmly welcomed.

The Village Inn We s t R u n t o n

Now the locomotive is being reassembled, further works to repaint the locomotive in the Great Eastern Railway blue livery she carried when built as new can continue. This is complimented by works which will replicate original pattern components to retro-fit the locomotive into her original 1912 appearance.

Speaking on the appeal success to date, Neil Sharpe said “The response by our members’ to our call to help plug the gap in our appeal has been overwhelming. In just over a week we have added over £12,000 to the appeal total which makes a massive difference for our Y14 overhaul. I can’t thank everyone who has helped us enough”

“We are now so close to being on the home straight, we’re nearly there, but not quite. The most important thing for us to do now is to reach the appeal target so we know we’re home and dry”.

Subject to funding, it is anticipated that the J15/Y14 will be completed as early as the end of November, meaning running in trials can take place on the East Lancashire Railway. If all tests are successful, the engine will then be transported back to Norfolk for final painting to transform the locomotive.

It will then be officially launched back into traffic, with a special VIP day for members’ and supporters of both the Society and Y14:2014 appeal.

Anyone wishing to donate to the appeal should visit the M&GN Joint Railway Society website www.mandgn.co.uk for further details.

Help Norfolk prevent the spread of Norovirus this winter

Ahead of winter, people in Norfolk are being urged to help prevent the spread of Norovirus. Sometimes known as the winter vomiting bug, Norovirus is the most common stomach bug in the UK. It is highly contagious and can affect people of all ages.

Outbreaks of Norovirus in public places, such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools, are common because the virus can survive for several days on surfaces or objects touched by an infected person.

To prevent its spread, public health officials are asking anyone with vomiting and diarrhoea – or who has been in contact with someone with these symptoms – to remain at home and off work for at least 48hrs after their last symptoms. This will help to protect Norovirus from spreading into areas such as schools, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk.

Norovirus is unpleasant but usually something that normally healthy people can recover from at home without the need to see a doctor.

There is no specific cure for Norovirus, so anyone affected by the bug should let it run its course. It is usually mild and should not last more than a couple of days.

Lucy Macleod, Interim Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said “If you have Norovirus, there are lots of things you

can do to help prevent its spread. As well as washing hands regularly with soap and warm water, try to avoid direct contact as far as possible with other people or preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have disappeared. You may still be contagious, even though you no longer have sickness or diarrhoea.

“Our priority is to avoid the spread of the virus to GP practices, care homes and hospitals where it may put vulnerable people at risk and affect staff. Norovirus is more serious and even more easily spread among people who are already ill.”

Preventing the spread of Norovirus Norovirus is easily spread. If an infected person doesn't wash their hands before handling food, they can pass the virus on to others. You can also catch it by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.

To help prevent the virus spreading, the following measures should be followed: • wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water • don't share towels and flannels • disinfect surfaces that an infected person has touched

If you have Norovirus, you may continue to be infectious for a short period after your symptoms stop. You should therefore avoid preparing food and direct contact with others for at least 48 hours after your symptoms disappear.

Treating Norovirus If you have Norovirus, following the steps below can help ease your symptoms: • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration • Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains • If you feel like eating, eat foods that are easy to digest

Extra care should also be taken to prevent babies and small children who have diarrhoea and vomiting from dehydrating by giving them plenty of fluids.

Each year, it's estimated that between 600,000 and 1 million people in the UK catch Norovirus. Although the illness is sometimes called the ‘winter vomiting bug’ because it's more common in winter, you can catch the virus at any time of the year.

The Ocean Beckons for Samundar Indian Kitchen

'"Samundar" is an Indian word meaning "ocean",' explains Mathahir Ali, head chef and co-owner of the Samundar Indian Kitchen. "When we launched the restaurant earlier this year, we wanted a name that reflected not just our culture and the origins of our food, but also the importance of where we are based - here in the heart of Cromer, where the sea has always played such a central role in people's lives.' Mathahir and his wife have lived in Cromer for several years, and their two boys attend the local junior school. They recognise the importance of being part of the community the restaurant serves, and feel lucky to number many of the customers among their personal friends.

The Samundar Indian Kitchen offers a full traditional Indian menu, but with some exciting variations, including Cromer crab dishes, as well as cuisine derived from the owners' Bangladeshi roots. The restaurant is fully licensed, and is currently offering an exciting new wine list.

Mathahir has assembled an excellent team, and those choosing to dine in can rely on warm, friendly service in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

The restaurant caters for all diners, but family groups are especially welcome.

The restaurant also offers a takeaway service, and home delivery is available within a four-mile radius. Samundar Indian Kitchen 36 Prince of Wales Road, Cromer NR27 9HS 01263 519700 / 519701

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A further 17 kittens have come into care since our last article including one dear little girl called Duchess that came in from a barn and has sadly had to have her tail amputated due to a nasty puncture wound which had become infected. She also has a nasty bite wound on her leg and is still requiring treatment for this. This lucky little kitten has already incurred heavy vet bills even before she is old enough to be vaccinated. The cats in the colony mentioned last time are not turning up in time to get to the vets in the morning so we have to rethink our plans and consider holding them overnight in a pen. We do need to catch them all soon, before they have any more kittens!

Having recently highlighted the work undertaken by our fosterers we would like to recognise the work undertaken by our other volunteers, wit4hout whom the branch would have difficulty functioning. These include the ladies who come and help clean the cats at Dilham. They turn up in all weathers and, apart from cleaning, they also socialise the cats in care there.

Osteoarthritis in Cats

Some volunteers help by taking cats to the vets either for a consultation or, in the case of the feral cats, to be neutered, once trapped. There are sometimes Home Visits to be made when a cat has been booked. Our volunteers also help with collections and at our fund raising events. One Beana, one of our older lady makes up the very popular kittens, just waiting for hampers that Stephanie sells at the Christmas Sale. We also have the gifted someone to give her a home ladies who use their skills to make items to sell at our events, toys for the cats or items for the home. One recent newcomer to our fold makes lovely cards to sell and these are proving very popular in some of our veterinary practices and in various other venues.

Some of our volunteers also multitask and we applaud them all for all their hard work, not only with the cats, but also raising the money to ensure we can continue with the work that we do.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Most people recognise the sign of osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs but did you know it is also found in cats? Due to the stoic nature of cats and their ability to hide pain, OA can go unnoticed or be put down to general ‘old age’. Bony changes in the arthritic joint appear as rough surfaces, when these surfaces rub together they cause pain and inflammation.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

OA occurs when cartilage that cushions the joint gets worn away, this may be the result of injury – an old break or dislocation or mechanical ‘wear and tear’ as the animal gets older. It can be primary, which means no other problems are present & is due to ‘wear and tear’ of old joints, or it can be secondary which means there is some other factor to consider – for example an old injury. Obesity in cats, though not a primary cause of OA will certainly exacerbate symptoms if left un-managed.

Signs of Osteoarthritis

Reluctance to jump up or down onto sofa/bed etc, difficulty getting in and out of cat flap, difficulty using litter tray and stiffness or lameness in legs to name a few. Diagnosis - If your cat is displaying any of the signs mentioned above it may well be suffering from OA, to enable us to make a diagnosis you will need to bring your cat in to see one of our vets. Once we have a diagnosis you will be referred to one of our nurses for an arthritis clinic. How you can help at home - There are many things you can do to help your cat’s mobility. Such as: Provide a soft padded bed at floor level, prop open the cat flap or leave a door open to allow easy access to outside and provide a litter tray, with at least 1 low side, indoors so your cat doesn’t have to go outside. Diet and supplements - There are many supplements on the market for arthritic conditions, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are amongst the most effective. These along with any dietary changes required will be discussed at the Arthritis Clinic by the nurse. Medication - Once diagnosis has been made, it is most likely your cat will be prescribed an anti-inflammatory pain killer. This comes in a liquid form and is highly palatable to cats; this will be discussed by the Vet at your initial appointment. For the full article on OA in cats visit our website www.miramarvets.co.uk We will be holding an evening talk about Osteoarthritis in Cats at Miramar Vets, Sheringham on the 12th November at 7.30pm. To book a place at this event please contact us as soon as possible, places are limited. Refreshments will be provided! FREE GOODIE BAG! If your dog has epilepsy a new book by local author Gill Carrick could help

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from frequent seizures - and just why these happen isn’t always clear. But generally speaking, a brain tumour, a head injury or a reaction to a vaccine or some chemicals, is at the root of the problem. Genes have a role to play too.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions among our furry friends with as many as one in every 20 dogs affected, to varying degrees. It usually develops before a hound’s fifth birthday and can affect dogs of any age or breed. On the good news front, with the right veterinary care; a good (low-fat) diet and complementary therapies, most epileptic dogs can live a relatively normal life.

My Dog has Epilepsy, but lives life to the full – a practical guide for owners, contains expert veterinary advice; touching true stories and glorious colour photos. Available now at Jarrolds, or online at Amazon.com

Labrador Rehoming Norfolk Labrador Rehoming Norfolk is not for profit voluntary, breed rescue organisation rehoming Labrador Retrievers of all ages across Norfolk.

I have lived with this wonderful breed for almost 30 years and I have rehomed Labradors for 13 years. I offer a caring, knowledgeable, experienced and respectful rehoming service for Labradors in need.

The main reasons for rehoming Labradors are changes in family circumstances for example divorce or bereavement. Permanent caring and loving homes are required whereby someone is at home for most of the day, and where there is a private garden. Are you able to see the world through the eyes of a dog, and meet their daily needs and requirements?

The rehoming process involves a telephone interview, comprehensive prospective owner application form and current owner dog questionnaire, with direct home to home rehoming transfer. Follow up calls are made and support is available to my homes for the rest of their dog's days. Various documentation supports a rehoming including a transfer of ownership and an adoption agreement form. Are you in a position whereby you are having to give up your Labrador? Have your personal circumstances changed and you can no longer give your Labrador the time and attention he deserves? Non-judgemental advice and support is available.

I also offer Labrador breed specific advice to anyone. My service is completely free.

If you are interested in rehoming a Labrador or are having to give up your own Labrador, then please contact Mark Hardy on 01328 700024 or 07881990917, email lrnoffice@yahoo.co.uk. 112 Year old horse dray brought home

The M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway has successfully completed the restoration of an original Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Horse Dray, which dates to 1902.

it was transported to the NNR’s Weybourne workshops and the restoration of the dray was begun.

The dray, which has been painstakingly restored using entirely traditional methods from a number of skilled Norfolk artisans was original built to serve the former Norwich City station, which was built by the M&GN, a joint Railway company formed by the Midland Railway and Great Northern Railway.

Norwich City station closed in 1959 and the dray passed into private ownership. It eventually ended up in the Norfolk Museums Service collection and sat languishing at the Gressenhall museum of rural life near Dereham. The dray was kindly donated to the M&GN Joint Railway Society, whereby

helps us demonstrate how freight and goods were transported and delivered from railway stations in the days before motor vehicles. The fact that it was originally used to make deliveries from Norwich City station is the icing on the cake for us.”

To mark the completion of the restoration, the dray was moved in the time-honoured way using a trained shire horse from Weybourne to Holt Railway Station as part of the Society’s Members’ Day on 4 October.

Nigel Scarlett, who spearheaded the restoration said “The dray is very different from our usual ‘bread and butter’ overhauls of steam engines and historic carriages and wagons. It is an incredibly important part of our collection and

The dray is now on display at Holt Railway Station, where it forms part of the wider project to create a ‘Beamish style’ working goods yard and living museum attraction as part of the wider North Norfolk Railway. It is intended to work the dray with a shire horse during special events.

Further information can be found on the M&GN Joint Railway website, www.mandgn.co.uk

NEW VICE-PRESIDENT FOR SUPPORTING CHARITY

The M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway is proud to announce the appointment of Geoff Gowing as a Vice-President of the fifty-five year old preservation group.

Geoff’s involvement with the Railway stretches back to 1973 when he joined the Society and began volunteering. His appointment reflects a lifetime of work devoted to restoring the North Norfolk Railway and the many roles undertaken for both the supporting charity and operating company.

Geoff served as a Trustee of the Society continuously from 1978 to 1999, holding many positions including Membership Secretary, Treasurer and founded the successful ‘Wandering 1500’ club which raises funds for the Society’s unique B12 locomotive.

Along with working tirelessly for many years with the administration of the charity, Geoff has also held a number of operational roles on the

14

North Norfolk Railway, including Driver, Guard and Signalman and worked with other volunteers to extend the line to Holt in the late 1980s. In 1997, Geoff took to the Chair of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, holding the post for two years, at which point he was appointed as General Manager of the North Norfolk Railway plc in 1999, holding the post for ten years.

During his tenure, the Railway underwent the radical transformation that has now seen it become one of the top Heritage Railways in the country. Significant milestones achieved during this time include the purchase of Sheringham Station, the extension of Weybourne Workshops, the steaming of the Society’s J15 locomotive and the construction of Bridge Road Carriage Sheds near Holt.

It was at this time that Geoff retired as General Manager and after a brief pause, returned as a Trustee of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, until retirement from this post in mid-2014.

Full Network Coverage for Mobiles?

Ann Steward, the former Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member responsible for Economic Development and now the Prospective Parliamentary Conservative Candidate for North Norfolk, has welcomed moves by the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council to push forward with plans to allow mobile phone users to access full network coverage across Norfolk.

In June, the Government announced plans to force mobile phone operators to share their networks to eliminate mobile “not-spots”. These plans will follow on from similar schemes in parts of Europe where governments and even the European Commission promote passive infrastructure sharing among mobile operators. On Monday the Conservative group at Norfolk County Council will present a motion calling on all of Norfolk’s MPs to lobby together for the earliest possible enactment of the Government’s proposals. Ann Steward, who was a driving force in the County Council’s investment in the broadband upgrade, currently underway across Norfolk, thinks improvements in mobile phone coverage go hand in hand with better broadband. In recent months Ann has continued to campaign for better digital services for Norfolk and recently took part in a ministerial delegation led by George Freeman MP with the Minister for the Digital Economy, Ed Vaizey MP.

Ann said, “I know how many people and businesses are frustrated by patchy or non-existent mobile signal in parts of Norfolk; it's one of the

biggest issues facing our county. The problem is particularly bad in North Norfolk where rural communities suffer very poor mobile service and feel all the more isolated.

It has far-reaching implications, on our health and welfare, on our competitiveness, on our learning opportunities and on Norfolk's attractiveness as a place to live, work and do business. It is a Conservative priority to enable mobile phone users to “roam” across networks to access the best coverage and I hope to drive this forward at the earliest opportunity. TO I am passionate about releasing Norfolk’s economic potential by Acrylic | Gel | Shellac improving essential inPedicure | Manicure | Eyebrow Waxing frastructure; from upgrading phone and Opening Hours: Mon to Sat 9.30am – 5.30pm broadband provision to 24 Church Street Cromer NR27 9ES modernising roads and Tel: 01263 514 823 rail services.”

North Norfolk Ghost Stories for Halloween

As we approach Halloween this is a good time to remember that there are hundreds of ghost stories set in North Norfolk, some of which are much too close for comfort!

All Saints Church, Beeston Regis In the churchyard of All Saints there are two granite boulders, one is used to cover a grave and the other rests beside the north wall. The stones were originally each side of a pathway leading to a farmhouse in the grounds of the adjoining, ruined, Beeston Priory.

A local tale says that in the late 1930s, a farmer named James Reynolds often drove his horse and cart along this pathway. Several times, at sunset, a hooded grey ghostly figure leapt out from behind one of the boulders and tried to grab the horse’s reins before vanishing. The farmer decided that when he died this stone should be placed on his grave, in an attempt at ‘laying’ the apparition. James Reynolds died in 1941 and, in accordance with his wishes the boulder was put on his grave, his wife Ann Elizabeth was also interred there when she died in 1967. This boulder is engraved with both their names.

Black Shuck There are many stories about Black Shuck along the North Norfolk Coast and many go back hundreds of years. Black Shuck or Old Shuck as he is sometimes known is a large black dog with fiery red eyes as big as saucers. According to the tales the eyes will burn right

into your soul if you look into them. Round its neck is a piece of chain that clanks and rattles as it haunts its way along the coast from Sheringham to Cromer.

On stormy nights when the wind whistled around the chimneys children were told that if they did not sleep ‘Old Shuck will come and get you’.

It has been suggested that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle heard this legend whilst staying at Cromer Hall and that this may have inspired him to write ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’. The Shrieking Pits.

In North Norfolk there are many shallow pits in the fields which were once thought to be prehistoric dwellings. In fact they are early medieval iron workings. A few are visible in the parish of Aylmerton in the fields just north

When the pits were thought to be prehistoric, she was believed to be the ghost of a Stone Age Woman. Now some say that she is the spirit of a mother looking for her baby who had been murdered by her jealous husband who was convinced that it wasn’t his child. After burying the baby in the pit west of Aylmerton Church, he went back and murdered his wife.

A similar story is about the ghost of a woman in a ‘winding sheet’ who rises out of the ground and roams around Weybourne. North Walsham Church.

and west of Gresham Cross and these are known as the Shrieking Pits. The tall phantom of a woman in white is said to wander around these pits, sometimes peering into them, but all the while wringing her hands and moaning and shrieking.

In the olden days, there was a dare for townsfolk in North Walsham leaving the White Swan pub to run around the church backwards three times, after which it was said that organ sounds could be heard coming from the empty church.

When a man got on the shoulder of a friend to look through the church window he saw ghostly figures walking up the aisle towards the altar.

Twenties Book Found

This wonderful old book was found in a house on Mundesley Road in North Walsham. The new owners of the house found the book, and glancing through it, also found a photograph of the house itself. Not only are the old photos of the town fascinating, but also the adverts placed, reveal how different the world was in 1927. So to enable others to enjoy this trip into the past of North Walsham, we (Showcase Gallery) are having the book reprinted in its entirety. If you interested in pre-ordering the book, we are taking orders, so please do not hesitate to give the shop a call on 01692-500928.

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818

Service Launch – Sunday 12 October

At 12.00 hrs at the request of Humber Coastguard the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched to assist in the search for two possible missing persons who were thought to be ‘drift diving’. The visibility over the water varied between 100 & 200 metres. The Lifeboat was tasked to search to the east of the station to try to locate them. The first informant then informed the coastguard that both divers had returned to shore.

The Lifeboat crew were then tasked to proceed to the west of the station as it was thought that more drift divers had entered the water to the west. The lifeboat located one drift diver ashore who informed them that he was waiting for two colleagues to come ashore.

A member of the public saw two divers walking along the beach and informed the Lifeboat station who in turn informed the police. When approached by the police and coastguard the divers confirmed that they had been ‘drift’ diving in a party of three and that they were the two ‘missing’ divers.

Unemployment continues to fall in North Norfolk – Norman Lamb MP

Following the distressing news of the proposed closure of the Heinz factory there was encouraging news on the employment front locally. In North Norfolk unemployment dropped 106 in the last three months to August, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics, and over this Parliament unemployment in North Norfolk has now fallen by 799 from 1382 to 583.

Across Britain unemployment dropped 538,000 in the past year - the largest annual fall on record.

Norman Lamb said the Liberal Democrats in Government had taken positive steps to clean up Labour’s economic mess: “'At present our thoughts are with the workers and families affected by the proposed closure of the Heinz factory. It is, however, encouraging that our local economy continues to grow, creating new jobs for local people. The strong labour market performance hasn’t happened by accident. The Liberal Democrats have taken steps to ensure our labour market is fair and flexible - delivering opportunity for everyone and preventing exploitation of the most vulnerable. The Liberal Democrats have fixed Labour’s economic mess and are building a stronger economy and fairer society.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, “Our jobs rich economic recovery means that Britain is fast becoming the job creation capital of the western economies. Because our recovery plan is working, so is the country and in record numbers. Every job created is a family made more secure and is another step towards the stronger economy and fairer society that Liberal Democrats are committed to build.”

In a recent message to Norman Lamb following the news at Westwick, Dean Hunter at Fakenham firm Kinnerton said, “We provided some assistance with some employees who were made redundant from Cromer Crab Company - many of which are still with us and flourishing in the careers here. Kinnerton has offered it's assistance to Heinz via their HR Manager Nicola Sharpe and we are ready to provide any assistance we can to their employees. This could be in the form of permanent opportunities or temporary with our agency partner PMP in Kings Lynn.”

Crayford & Abbs Offers Free Checks to Help Motorists Get To Grips With Tyre Safety Crayford and Abbs will be educating drivers about the importance of healthy tyres as part of Tyre Safety Month this October, though they have decided to spread the message through November as well.

Last year (2013) saw the UK suffer the wettest winter on record and the Bodham and Mundesley dealership will be getting behind this annual campaign by TyreSafe – a non profit organisation dedicated to increasing levels of tyre safety - to increase awareness about the importance of correct tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and worn tyres.

Statistics show that more than 1,200 casualties occur on the UK’s roads every year as a result of illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres - a number further exacerbated by last year’s extreme wet weather.

Kevin Abbs said: “After a treacherous winter last year, we are glad to be supporting this year’s TyreSafe campaign, focusing on the importance of driving on tyres with adequate tread depth. We’re happy to offer our customers a free tyre safety check in order to make sure they will have maximum control, whatever the weather. It could literally be a matter of life and death. We also have the very latest Digital four wheel alignment system to ensure we offer the very best service.”

The tread grooves on a tyre help to clear water from the contact patch between a tyre and the road surface so the vehicle can grip properly. During wet conditions, tyres with a good tread depth can typically clear enough water to fill a bucket in around seven seconds. The more worn or under-inflated a tyre is, the less effective it is at clearing water.

In addition to the increased risk presented by worn tyres, driving on tyres that are below the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each tyre.

With this in mind the Bodham and Mundesley dealership is offering a variety of special offers on tyres throughout October and November. The Tyre Safety Month is supported by safety organisations such as the Highways Agency, the Chief Fire Officers Association and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as well as Road Safety GB.

To find out more about the special offers available, or for more information on how to get your tyres checked, visit either Bodham or Mundesley now or call 01263 588160 / 01263 720808.

There have been several articles in the media lately creating an awareness of the loneliness that can be experienced by the elderly population.

Current statistics reveal that up to 17% of the elderly have contact with a friend, family or neighbour less than once per week. This can have a detrimental effect on both physical and mental health.

It is well known that there is a large elderly population here in North Norfolk, and we, at Age UK North Norfolk Befriending Service, receive many requests for a volunteer to visit and brighten up someone’s day. Our volunteers are truly inspirational – they give up their own time to visit people on a regular basis, sometimes several hours per week, providing companionship and support.

Befriending Services such as ours have been proved to be effective ways of helping to combat loneliness and isolation, and we have had very positive feedback from our volunteers who visit, and from the elderly they befriend.

Demand for visits is high, and we are not always able to provide a volunteer to visit immediately. So if anyone feels they can spare an hour or two each week to brighten up someone’s day, do get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

Bessingham Manor wins North Norfolk Conservation and Design Award

The 2014 North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Graham Allen Award has been won by Bessingham Manor for the restoration of the previously derelict grand Victorian country house.

The Manor has a long and intriguing history involving fires, theft and bankruptcy. It has been to auction, been structurally condemned and was even scheduled to be demolished in February 2010.

Plans to replace the Victorian masterpiece with a replica manor house never came to fruition and against the odds the current owners stepped in and decided the building was far too important to be lost.

In just 17 months, Bessingham Manor has been transformed using entirely traditional materials and techniques, maintaining its original character and charm, with this latest phase

becoming another remarkable step in the building’s history.

The project has been hailed a success by the Judging Panel, not only for the honest and expert approach to conservation but also the endeavour and vision of those involved in the project for taking on such a daunting challenge.

The restoration and extension of a Grade II Listed building, ‘The Pightle’, Town Yard, Cley, won the Highly Commended Award. The building had suffered from neglect and was in a poor state of repair. The project successfully combined high quality repair and restoration with sympathetic contemporary new design. A new oak timber frame and glass extension has been seamlessly linked to the listed building, clearly defining 21st century architecture from the 18th century dwelling.

The complete restoration of one of the District’s Buildings at Risk, ‘The Old Rectory’, Wiveton Road, Blakeney was Commended.

This project has saved a Grade II Listed building and was carried out to the highest standard.

A Special Commemoration Award was presented to Langham Dome, Cockthorpe Road, Langham. Originally constructed in 1942 as a training facility for anti-aircraft gunners, the Scheduled Ancient Monument has been transformed into a new visitor attraction telling the story of RAF Langham and the brave service men and women who were based there during World War 2.

Funding for the project was secured from a number of national and local sources, including the Heritage Lottery Fund, and a team of local volunteers have come together to look after and run the Dome.

The awards were presented by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

Upbow Strings Day 2014

Gresham’s in Holt recently hosted a music event with a difference with over 100 children from schools across the region taking part in a massed string ensemble designed to promote string playing.

Upbow Strings Day was a one-day event where

young violinists and cellists were invited to work with Gresham’s music staff to practise and perform as part of a large strings orchestra. Over the course of the day, the pupils worked on six pieces before performing them to a large audience of parents and friends in Gresham’s School chapel. The concert also included Pupils performing in Chapel

music from Gresham’s Cello Quartet, Senior String Quartet and String Ensemble and finished with everyone’s favorite piece of the day, the theme tune to Wallace & Gromit! The ensemble was led by violin teacher, Keith Hobday, who also gave a spirited performance of Brahms’ Hungarian Dance, accompanied by Director of Music and organiser of Upbow, Nathan Waring. The school also welcomed during the day a local stringed instrument specialist, Daniel Bartlette, who explained how a violin is made and how it should be looked after and maintained.

The schools who took part were: Antingham and Southrepps Primary School, Corpusty Primary School, Holt Primary, Jane Austin College, Kelling Primary School, Rudham Primary School, Sheringham Primary School, All Saints Stibbard Primary School, St Nicholas House School, Wells-next-the-Sea Primary School.

The Hare & Moon Gallery showcases East Anglian artists

Claire Knight, a north Norfolk paper cut artist, opened The Hare & Moon Gallery at Alby Crafts and Gardens this summer to showcase her own work and that of other East Anglian artists.

The gallery will be hosting its first exhibition 'Art in Miniature' from Saturday 22 November. The exhibition will feature new work by Georgia Dodson and limited edition wood engravings by Andy English.

Georgia's work is strongly influenced by a tradition of seventeenth century northern European forest floor paintings. For this collection Georgia has been working 'plein air' in oil on copper sheets measuring only 10cm square. She seeks to re-engage the viewer with the detail and the complexity of life and decay on the forest floor.

“The vast history of wooded landscapes is impressive in itself, a definitive root to many cultures, yet perhaps overlooked and forgotten in the present,” explains Georgia. “My paintings seek to re-engage viewers with wooded landscapes by addressing contrasts between the perceived 'wildwood' of the past and the small pockets of ancient woodland remaining today, raising questions about human connections with nature.”

Andy English,a wood engraver from Little Downham near Ely, is renowned for his meticulous prints, which he describes as 'unashamedly small scale, rural and autobiographical'. All of his work starts off as a detailed drawing, which is engraved into a woodblock, often using a magnifying glass to achieve the fine detail he wants. He then uses his nineteenth century Albion press to print limited editions of the finished design. This exhibition features twelve of Andy's wood engravings, including ‘Hares, Ely’ and an artist's proof of 'Woody', a local cat of considerable character.

'Art in Miniature' opens at The Hare & Moon Gallery on Saturday 22 November at 10am.

Sheringham Helping Hands Sheringham Helping Hands is a small voluntary organisation providing a gardening service to the frail and elderly of Sheringham and the close surrounding area. We were formed in April 2003 by next door neighbours Graham and Jennifer Simms and Rodney and Angela Gwynn with the support of Age Concern (now Age UK) North Norfolk. Grants were gratefully received from The National Lottery, Norfolk Rural Community Council, Age Concern England, Blyth & Wright, St Peters Church Flower Fund, Citizens Action Millenium Awards (Help The Aged) and The Tesco Charity Trust. An elderly car donated to Age Concern by Mr. & Mrs Goodwin was provided for our use, Les Lay gave us a roof rack for ladders and Mr.& Mrs. Bill Day gave a trailer and a lawn mower. A Central Garage lock-up even became available at just the right time – it was obviously meant to happen! All of this wonderful support enabled us to purchase the initial equipment, set up the organisation and provide the gardening

service. Along the way, we acknowledge Maurice Longlands who donated a mattock and we have had a number of small hand tools given to us. The organisation would not be able to function without the very valued support of volunteer gardeners and grateful thanks are due to: Michael Noel, Susan Maxted, Mark Hill, Alison Craske, John Gwynn, Loraine Greer, Richard Bottomley, David Braithwaite, Nick Lynes and Malcolm Poore. Similarly, grateful thanks to the support received from local businesses Blyth & Wright, Central Garage, North Norfolk’s Garden Machinery Centre and Yvonne Catherine for helping us to keep the show on the road. Since 2003 we have given gardening help to over 270 different local customers and will have made a total of 5,000 individual garden visits by the end of this year. The generous financial donations from our customers enabled us to become completely self-funding within a short space of time and allowed us to give a total of £6000 surplus donations to Age UK in Sheringham to support the Day Centre and their work in the community.

PROBUS and the animals

When Cromer and Sheringham Probus club met for its October lunch the speaker who had been booked was unable to attend. However, at very short notice Imogen White, Manager and Head Keeper of Cromer’s Amazona Zoo stepped in and delighted members with a talk on the zoo and its animals.

Imogen, a graduate in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, spent time in South America and the Galapagos islands before bringing her expertise and enthusiasm to Amazona Zoo when it opened eight years ago. Club members were impressed not only with her knowledge of the animals in

Very regrettably, because of advancing years, health problems and difficulty in getting volunteers we have decided that we will have to close down the organisation at the end of this year. However, our most strongly favoured option is for the service to continue and we have tried to attract interest to continue this but have, so far, been unsuccessful. If there is anyone or group who would be interested in continuing this very worthwhile voluntary activity we would be extremely pleased to hear from them. It would be a great relief to many of our customers to know that the service can continue in its present form. Please contact Rodney Gwynn Tel: O1263 821661 if you think you can help. In the event that this does not happen then the vehicle and equipment will be sold in January next year and the proceeds given to Age UK North Norfolk. This could be a favourable buying opportunity for a gardener wishing to set up in business next year or existing gardeners looking to replace or supplement their equipment. If anyone wishes to register their interest in purchasing equipment in the event of this default option please contact Rodney Gwynn on the above number.

her care but also her obvious devotion and commitment to them. At the conclusion of the meeting, club member Ken Macnish thanked Imogen for her talk and presented her with a cheque to enable the club to ‘adopt’ an ocelot at the zoo.

PROBUS Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired professional and business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining PROBUS, telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett for further information on 01263 826881.

Experience Sheringham

Around 35 members of ‘Experience Sheringham' - the organisation that promotes all the good things that Sheringham can offer visitors and residents - met on the evening of Tuesday 23 September to discuss the further development of the Sheringham ‘brand'. The meeting was hosted by Online Web Marketing [OWM] at its offices in the new Sheringham Community Centre. OWM took over the management and operation of ‘Experience Sheringham' in 2013 when funding for Local Area Partnership Sheringham Plus came to an end. The presentation from the Managing Director of OWM, Paul Richmond, about how the UK population chooses its holiday destinations, and therefore what information the ‘Experience Sheringham' portal should contain, provoked lively and positive discussion. This also led to a discussion about the different ways in which the town of Sheringham and its immediate locality, its shops, restaurants, amenities and the many established and popular events it stages throughout the year, could be further promoted. The seminar will be followed by a members recruitment drive for ‘Experience Sheringham', with the objective of generating additional income which can be invested in the further development of the website and other promotional initiatives.

"The meeting was an indication of the commitment of members of 'Experience Sheringham' to the town and its future," sums up Paul, "and undoubtedly, the organisation will be stronger with a wider

Dear Margaret,

I would be grateful if you would allow me to use the Sheringham Independent to express my thanks to the multitude of people who have supported, helped, advised, cajoled and even bullied me over the last 38 years of community activity.

I started with erecting the Xmas Lights in 1976 and finished with the wonderful 40s weekend in 2014.During that time the townsfolk of Sheringham, ably supported by the town's businesses and a large number of visitors, have enabled me to achieve many things that even now I find it difficult to believe have been part of my wonderful life in the town. It is now time to finish and redirect my decreasing amount of energy to cycling, walking and my allotment (about time stc). To you all I say "thank you very, very much". I am proud of being a resident of such a wonderful town.
