Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society World War One Centenary Remembrance Concert St Peter’s Church, Sheringham, 8 November

Benjamin Britten’s arrangement of the National Anthem opened the concert in which the chorus and orchestra performed the first verse pianissimo, modulating to the dominant – progressing to a glorious crescendo to end. In Six Songs from a Shropshire Lad by George Butterworth, arranged by Lawrence Tao, the vocal projection and interpretations were so controlled by baritone Tom Stoddart who managed to rise above the orchestral accompaniment.

The chorus then performed For the Fallen by Douglas Guest in which Laurence Binyon’s famous words proved very apt for the occasion. Even though the words of Peter Aston’s So they gave their Bodies were written in 431BC they remain relevant today. John Ireland’s setting of Greater Love hath no Man than this is popular with many choirs because of the beautiful harmonies portraying the true meaning of the words. The choir were superb in performance of the three works creating emotion in an exciting way under the masterful direction of conductor Nathan Waring and accompanist Lawrence Tao playing organ.

Norfolk Rhapsody by Ralph Vaughan Williams performed by the English Chamber Orchestra transported the listener through the beauty of Norfolk with musical pictures of the landscape, waterways, big skies and nature itself. It is so

impressionistic and enlightening how music creates such mindful pictures.

A short film was shown before the second half in which the composer, Patrick Hawes, spoke briefly about Edith Cavell, her life, her faith and how the work Eventide came about. The performance began with the semi-chorus, consisting of Gresham’s Prep School Chapel Choir, singing the first verse of Abide with Me. Soprano soloist Rosamund Walton, sang a setting of words Edith Cavell wrote from prison to her nephew. Walton’s voice, pure and rich in tone, filled the church with its clarity with perfect intonation. The chorus in a setting of words from Psalm 63 performed with sincerity in interpretation of the words. The singing by the semi-chorus of the second verse of Abide with Me added to the already emotional atmosphere evident in the auditorium. The chorus continued with a setting of the words pronouncing the official declaration of the sentence handed down to Edith Cavell followed by the soprano soloist, accompanied by harp, singing the words of a letter “to my dear nurses”. With the singing of the third verse of Abide with Me the emotional impact became very real. Rosamund Walton’s singing of words from Thomas a Kempis The Imitation of Christ was truly beautiful. As the choir combined with the semi-chorus to sing the next verse

of Abide with Me the atmosphere became almost tangible as the soprano, chorus and orchestra combined for the Prayer of Thanksgiving, as prayed by Edith Cavell on 11 October 1915: such an uplifting experience. The fifth verse described the deep faith which she had. To close Rosamund Walton sang Cavell’s now famous words “Patriotism is not enough…..” her captivating voice bringing to an end this most emotional and wonderful evening within the hallowed walls of St Peter’s Church Sheringham.

Conductor Nathan Waring excelled in bringing out the best of the performers and presenting the full depth of Patrick Hawes intention with the libretto compiled by his brother Canon Andrew Hawes. Terry Keeler

Mustard Beer and Boots

When the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club met for their November lunch, they were joined by Chris Armstrong, the author of the recently published book, “Mustard, Beer and Boots”. After lunch Chris gave an illustrated talk about the eight businessmen in his book who brought wealth and prosperity to Norfolk in the 19th century. He told fascinating anecdotes from his research about each of the businessmen ranging from J. J. Coleman of Mustard fame to the retailer J. J. Jarrold. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chris Armstrong was thanked by Nick Lee on behalf of the club for a most interesting and entertaining talk.

Coming to Wiveton Hall Café on Friday 5th December...

PROBUS Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired Professional and Business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining PROBUS, telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett on 01263 826881 for further information.

Santa's coming to CAS

We at C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham are running for the second year our very successful Santa’s Sleigh Appeal.

We will be having a Santa’s Sleigh in our branch between 20th November and the 18th December and are hoping to fill the sleigh with lots of lovely toys and goodies which will then be presented to Break Charity on the 19th December. Break Charity will then distribute the gifts to the vulnerable children, families and young people they work with.

We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by the 18th December.

We really hope this year’s appeal will be even more successful than last year and we can make this Christmas an extra special one and put a smile on the faces of local children and families supported by Break.

Thank you in advance for your support.

With kind regards, Nina and the team, C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham.

Magic comes to Holt!

Holt and District Probus Club were treated to a scintillating show by Roy Davenport of Davenport’s Magic Kingdom on 6 November.

Roy did begin by performing a magic trick with a length of rope, but then stood on a chair and spoke about his family history in magic. Starting with his great grandfather Lewis Davenport who supported his family from the age of 8 years after his father died and passing on with grandfather, father and uncles (and aunts etc.) and culminating Roy Davenport with Bob Ward in Roy opening Davenport’s Magic Kingdom in North Walsham. This is quickly established as one of the most important tourist attractions in Norfolk.

Roy’s energetic talk ended with a magic trick performed with six solid metal rings - which magically linked together and came apart again. As Arthur Askey used to say, ’Before your very eyes’!

Thanks were given on behalf of the members by Alan Mason.

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

Christmas Pet Care

have a fun festive season without having to rush to the vets!

• NEVER give dogs human chocolate. It contains an ingredient called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Some dogs are crafty and will help themselves to chocolates hanging from the tree or unwrap themselves a selection box, if they do you need to contact us for advice. • If you buy toys for your pets as Christmas presents, make sure they are suitable ones, some are easily destroyed and parts can be taken off & swallowed whole. Also ensure that cats don’t play with baubles and tinsel hanging from your tree. • Christmas tree lights can be dangerous. If the wires are chewed your pet will be at risk from an electric shock. • Try and avoid giving your pets too many food treats, especially if your pets are not used to it, the last thing you want is for them to have vomiting and diarrhoea. • Do not give bones as chews; they can get stuck in your dog’s digestive system (giving us no option but to operate to remove them)

Have a look in our shop for some suitable pet toys and treats To celebrate the 1st birthday of our Sheringham surgery on 4th December, we are offering 10% off everything bought in the shop on that day.

On Friday 7th November our much loved tabby cat, Spike failed to return home for his supper. We have not seen him since earlier in the day.

If anyone has spotted a tabby cat looking a bit lost in the Bernard Road area of Cromer or beyond, please get in touch. Our house is so quiet without him – he is very vocal and affectionate and we desperately want him home.

Be Part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2015 One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country has announced its dates for 2015 and artists can now apply to take part. The Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (NNOS) scheme is a 16-day county-wide celebration and a key event in Norfolk’s visual arts calendar.

Annually drawing visitors in excess of 32,000 the scheme, which was established in 1994, is run by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in collaboration with local artists. Each year hundreds of artists across the region invite the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival artistic director William Galinsky said “The Festival is proud that the Open Studios scheme works with so many talented artists in a part of the world that has long and also for visitors to see artwork as it happens away from the traditional gallery spaces. Following on from last year’s record year, with the continued support of Wex Photographic, we hope to attract even more visitors in 2015.”

Artist Elizabeth Potter who creates three dimensional sculpture exhibited her work as part of the 2014 Open Studios scheme from her workplace in Saxthorpe, north Norfolk. She said “I enjoyed my first Open Studios experience, met lots of lovely people, other artists and made contacts.”

This year’s Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios grew with a record 585 artists and 480 school children participating across 272 venues. Art lovers and curious first timers alike were attracted to the scheme with 20 Art Trails and countless demonstrations, events and workshops by participating artists.

Emma van Deventner, Events Manager at Wex Photographic said “Wex Photographic is very proud to be supporting the unique NNOS programme again in 2015. We were delighted with its success last year and we are excited to be working alongside the Festival team to further raise the profile of this important and diverse event. We are all about supporting the artist and we cannot think of a better way to do so than in our home county through NNOS.”

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2015 will take place between 23 May and 7 June 2015.

Nigel Barnett at work in his studio

Research by the scheme’s organisers has shown that on average each participating artist or collective received around 120 visitors. In addition, half of visitors this year ate out at a local restaurant or cafe as part of their Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios experience and 38% also visited local shops.

Following a hugely successful inaugural sponsorship in 2014, Norwich based company Wex Photographic will be supporting the scheme again in 2015.

Artists wanting to take part can apply online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £100 for individual artists and £280 for groups of artists and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure with a print run of 35,000.

Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, posters, postcards and the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2015. The deadline for 2015 applications is Friday 5 December 2014.

For more information please visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk, email nnopenstudios@nnfestival.org.uk or call Ros Dixon on 01603 877762.

Dear Margaret,

Mayor of Sheringham, Tricia Brooks, hosted a packed hall to officially launch Sheringham as a Fairtrade town.

As former Mayor, I met Brenda Smith a year ago and asked my deputy Tricia Brooks to help Brenda set up a committee to bring Fair Trade to Sheringham. Under Brenda's leadership, tireless enthusiasm and hard work, Sheringham was granted Fair Trade status after the first application, an extremely rare achievement.

During the seemingly endless roll call of participating local organisations and businesses my mind wandered back 50 years, when as a teenager I asked my father who he thought were the most forceful people on the planet? He replied, "small, elderly English ladies who ride bicycles." I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

As we sat smugly celebrating our town's proud new status I realised we were also celebrating the remarkable success of a formidable, small softly spoken, bicycle riding English lady, who is changing the world for the better. Hats off to you Brenda, you have done us proud. Cllr Doug Smith

Dear Margaret I have been deeply touched by the amount of respectful silence heard in Sheringham over this last week. The community came together to remember not only the dead and injured of World Wars, but also those of subsequent wars together with the families who have been affected by grief and suffering.

Our week of Remembrance started with two lectures, organised by The History Society and hosted by The Little Theatre, in which we were reminded how the nightmare of WW1 affected Norfolk. One man’s horrific story was terrifyingly portrayed in the play, performed at The Little Theatre, “Clamber up the Crucifix”. The silence at the end this production was deafening.

The children of our town have also been very busy researching the lives of some of those named on the war memorial. The school cluster group portrayed a few of these lives, in a play called “Lest We Forget”, in front of a full house at The Little Theatre.

On Saturday evening Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society gave us a night to remember. In our beautiful Parish Church of St Peter’s we heard works by Benjamin Britten, a former Gresham’s pupil, and Vaughan Williams, who lived for a while in Sheringham. The major piece of the evening was the hauntingly beautiful and moving “Eventide”, written by Patrick Hawes to commemorate the life and death of Edith Cavell. The Chorus was supported by children from Gresham’s school and the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world, The English Chamber Orchestra. The final notes and silence will remain with me.

Remembrance Day brought out hundreds of people to support The Royal British Legion in their tribute to fallen comrades on the 100 years anniversary of WWI. Together with the rest of the Country we kept the two minutes silence.

On Tuesday, Armistice Day 630 Sheringham Primary school children walked from their school to St Peter’s Church to pay their respects to the fallen.. We heard poems written by the children which showed their understanding of the horror of war. At 11am on the 11th of the 11th, 630 young children kept the two minute silence, with not a whisper! Simultaneously, The Royal British Legion conducted a service at The War Memorial. On the same day members of Age UK in Sheringham held their own special service with a reading by Mary Bloom.

All of the events have been well attended and I know how touched The Royal British Legion have been by the support the people of Sheringham have given during this period of commemoration and remembrance. My thanks to The Royal British Legion and all those other wonderful people who worked so hard to help Sheringham remember the Centenary of WW.

Tricia Brooks, Mayor of Sheringham

Sheringham History Group

In the summer of 2014, the Sheringham History Group was called upon by then Mayor - Doug Smith - to arrange something to commemorate the Cententenary of the First World War. Chairman Hugh Bradbury's first thought was the outbreak of war in August 1914, and the speaker Tony Taylor-Neale. Because of short notice, summer holidays and other events at the time the talk was moved to 6th November 2014. Hugh called upon the Little Theatre to accommodate extra guests for the two talks which was kindly agreed. The first talk was "Norfolk Goes to War" by Neil R. Story well known Norfolk historian and author. It was well illustrated and the old photographs collected and researched by Mr. Storey looked amazing on the big screen at the Little Theatre. His latest book entitled "Norfolk Goes to War" is available at B. A. Watts and is a must for researching soldiers and regiments from Norfolk and others serving in Norfolk.

The second talk "Why Did it Happen?" by Mr. Tony Taylor-Neale was also illustrated and informative about world events leading up to war in August 1914. The speaker has done extensive research into the Great War and written articles for the Britain at War magazine.

FOR THE FALLEN

They shall not grow old As we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them Nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun And in the morning We will remember them refrain: We will remember them.

A Christmas Noël with The Jays

Norfolk’s celebrated chamber choir The Jay Singers bring their musically rich year to a stirring close with their Christmas concerts. After outstanding summer debuts at Binham Priory and Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, the Jays are delighted to return to familiar Norfolk venues, including St Lawrence’s Centre, South Walsham on Saturday 13 December at 7pm followed by St Matthew’s Church, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich on Sunday 14 December at 3pm.

Showcasing a rich mix of the unfamiliar and the usual suspects, the Jays will give the traditional Christmas themes an invigorating twist. Their seasonal programme will span music from the sixteenth century to the present day – from William Byrd to Richard Rodney Bennett, Tchaikovsky to John Tavener – with additional contributions by Britten, Holst and Whitacre. There’ll be well-known carols in arrangements by Kodaly, Poston, Rutter and Willcocks, and Poulenc’s atmospheric Four Christmas Motets will add French flavour to this Noël celebration. Entertaining and eclectic readings, – of both poetry and prose extracts from a range of favourite writers including Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy and U A Fanthorpe– will also feature, and each concert concludes with ingeniously fresh takes on the ever-popular Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland.

Musical Director, Neil MacKenzie continues to develop the Jays’ reputation for care, commitment and infectious enjoyment. He likes to keep the choir on its toes by choosing music that demands plenty of vocal colour, harmony and flexibility. And he’s similarly keen for audiences to take a few risks: “Plenty of comfort and joy”, he promises, “but with a nice bit of strangeness thrown in!”

Get into the Christmas spirit in top musical style. After all, as one reviewer recently commented “North Norfolk is fortunate to have a choir of the quality of the Jay Singers as part of its cultural landscape”.

A Very Merry Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre

A veritable feast of pantomime fun is being served up at Sheringham Little Theatre this festive season when Robin Hood is joined by the Babes in the Wood.

faces; much-loved panto dame Russel Hicken will return in all his vibrant glory in the role of Nanny Polly Tix.

West End star Killian Donnelly has written a special seasonal show for the coastal venue, which brings the classic tale of the Merry Men together with an old Norfolk yarn.

Robin Hood, which also features a number of modern twists, runs from Tuesday 9 December until Saturday 3 January and promises to be a colourful and lively show, with plenty for adults as well as children.

“We are so excited to be working with Killian again this year,” said Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre. “This is a completely new script, which will be just as much fun as Snow White was last year.

“Killian has written it to ensure we have been able to include lots of young people this year and of, course, by incorporating the home-grown story of Babes in the Wood too we know there will be plenty of local interest.” Wayland Wood, near Watton, is, of course, supposed to be where a young brother and sister were abandoned by their evil uncle centuries ago. In Killian’s tale, the uncle is the

Sheriff of Rottingham and the babes are Jack and Jill.

Callum Crowe, nine, from Bignold Primary School, in Norwich, plays Jack in the panto. “I think it is going to be a good story,” he said. “I was in Snow White last year and I am really pleased to be in Robin Hood too.”

Penny Othon, 10, from Sheringham Primary School, won the role of Jill after auditioning at the theatre. “My eyes lit up when I heard I’d been given the part – I love singing and dancing so much and being in a pantomime is especially good fun because all the characters are so funny,” she said.

The pantomime will feature new and familiar

“The main cast is, of course, professional and we are thrilled that this year they will be joined by so many Norfolk children,” Debbie said.

“We can’t wait for the curtain to go up on Robin Hood – we know it will be such fun and that everyone who comes will enjoy it immensely and leave with some great seasonal memories.”

*Robin Hood runs at the Sheringham Little Theatre from Tuesday, December 9 to Saturday, January 3, 2015.

A Helping Hand this Christmas

A Trust in Sheringham is hoping to make Christmas a little bit easier for some families through the award of grants. People in the town can apply for a Christmas Grant from The Sheringham Poors and Ploughlet Trust, which was set up to give financial assistance to people residing in what was the Ancient Parish of Sheringham and Upper Sheringham. Grants are made each December to assist with the expenses of Christmas and to provide a festive “perk. Applicants must be in receipt of a Social Security benefit such as Pension Credit, Council Tax Rebate or similar benefits. The trust is also able to give financial assistance to people who can show a particular need, for example those who might need household repairs, household equipment, aids towards a specific disability and so forth. The Trust can also help certain groups such as young and old peoples’ organisations and community groups. The overall consideration is that the applicant has to satisfy the residential qualification previously mentioned and to show that there is a need for assistance. Hugh Lansdell, a senior partner at Hansells, said “The Trust is a long established Parish charity, is very well off and routinely does not spend all its income. The Trustees would like to attract more applications, including for the Christmas Grants. These have for years been routinely provided to people who are entitled to benefits living within the ancient Parish boundaries. Get in touch with the Secretary of the Trust, Sally Gill by calling 01263 514559 or emailing sallyg5@btinternet.com

Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival

St. Andrews Methodist Churh Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s 5th Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 11 December to Wednesday 16 December.

Organised jointly by St Andrew’s and St. Peter’s Parish Church the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors. Last year’s event was held at St. Peter’s and raised over £6,000 for the 41 charities that took part. This year, again, over 40 local and national charities will be

represented. Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely

portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree and to

add to the ambiance the magical displays will be supported by a background of seasonal music.

After seeing the trees, visitors will also be able to buy last minute Christmas gifts from an abundance of stalls organised by the participating charities. There will also be a special craft section for children to takean active part in the festival while parents enjoy a cup of tea and light refreshments that will be available throughout.

The festival will be open Weekdays (except Friday) 10.30 -6pm, Friday 10.30am -7pm, Saturday 10.30 – 6pm and Sunday 2pm – 6pm. Admission to the festival is free and a warm welcome awaits. So come along, support your favourite charity and share in the love of the Holy Child, Jesus Christ in this special community event.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS

On the 24th October 2104 the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club were one year old. On this date we received our Charter which meant that we could operate as a self-sufficient club. Up until this date we were a branch club of the Taverham & District Lions Club.

When we are out collecting for our charity or at fetes, etc., with our Tombola Stall, etc., there are two questions that we are often asked: Who are the Lions? What do Lions do? Well I hope that the following will answer these questions.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with over 1.5 million members, active in almost 44,000 communities around the world. Lions are dedicated to selfless, effective service to answer the needs that challenge local communities.

Lions are ordinary people who do amazing things. They are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local and global communities. In the

FreeAds

British Isles and Ireland and the rest of Europe Lions donate around 5.7 million hours and 88 million pounds to humanitarian causes each year.

As a volunteer organisation, when a pound is raised by Lions Clubs it goes directly to charity. All administration costs are met by members.

Since the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club was first formed as a branch club of the Taverham & District Lions Club in 2011 it has raised approx £ 9,000 which has been donated to organisions including:■ East Anglian Air Ambulance.

■ Sheringham Woodfields School

■ Sheringham Health Centre for specialist equipment.

■ Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood appeal.

■ A bed for a baby boy with serious medical problems.overs etc. for specialised pushchair for a baby girl with serious medical problems.

■ Making up Christmas Hampers for needy families in local area.

■ Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind

■ Nelson’s Journey (a Norfolk charity for bereaved children).

We have also made various other smaller donations.

Our fundraising as mentioned above is through street collections, Tombola Stall and other game stalls @ local fetes etc. We also hold Quiz & Chips evenings.

Being a Lion is not all work. We do have a very active social life as well. Over the years we have visited local breweries, Archant Press, theatres, the house and workrooms of the late Wing Commander Ken Wallis (inventor of the Autogyro), had carpet bowls evenings and darts evenings.

I hope this has answered those questions often raised but if you would like to know more or even come along to a meeting please contact Lions Brian or Hazel Harris on 01263 821276 email brihaz@btinternet.com

Beeston Regis churchyard is filling up

It was estimated back in 2006 that, across the country, the total area available for burials would be filled on average within 25 years in Church of England/Wales churchyards, and within 30 years in local authority burial grounds, according to a government survey.*

The extended churchyard at All Saints’ Church, Beeston Regis, is now filling up and in ten years’ time it is expected to be full. The Rector, David Head, said:

Timb Win er dow Now s Avai lable

“The boundaries of Beeston Regis church parish changed in 1999 when much of Sheringham that had been part of Beeston parish was joined to Sheringham parish. That reduced the burden on Beeston Regis churchyard to give extra time.

“At Beeston Regis, we want to be fair to those who live in our parish, whom we have a duty to bury, and to those who have a very long family connection or strong personal faith connection to our church. So to honour this commitment we need to start restricting burials at All Saints’ to these people.”

Burials taking place in All Saints’ churchyard will now have to meet one of four categories: 1) those being buried in an existing grave of a loved one;

2) those who have currently been living or who have died in the parish;

3) those who have been long-term adult worshippers at the church; and

4) those who have several generations of their family buried in the churchyard.

Sadly, the Church Council will no longer be able to support applications to reserve a space in the churchyard as this may disadvantage others.

The church will continue to conduct funerals in All Saints’ for all whose families wish it, even if a burial is elsewhere or if someone’s body is cremated afterwards. The Rector, David Head, said:

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need! Wills + Probate Trusts + Tax Planning Elderly Client Services Powers of ƩŽƌŶĞLJ Court of ProtecƟon Matrimonial Law Buying + Selling Property Commercial + Company Law

“We have a garden of remembrance by the gate to the church, overlooking the sea, into which the ashes of all, irrespective of where they have lived and died, may be buried. I am pleased to say that there is no problem of space here.

“For those who live in Sheringham, and no longer in Beeston Regis parish, for whom a burial in a churchyard is important, Father Phil Blamire has said that both Upper Sheringham and Kelling churchyards are open to any who wish to use them. A funeral director will help you to arrange this.

“We are genuinely sorry for any distress this causes to those we will have to refuse. We will of course be discussing with the parish council what grave space might be provided in the future.”

Carers Rights Day - 28 November The Local branch of The Multiple Sclerosis Society in North Norfolk is having an information stand at Cromer hospital to raise awareness of Carers. The stand will be on the first floor from 10am to 1pm.

Carers Rights Day raises awareness of the needs of carers with the public, decision makers and professionals, helping to realise a vision of a society that respects, values and supports carers. (Carers UK)

Being a carer comes with huge responsibilities - people often give up their jobs and many enjoyable aspects of their lives to look after a friend, relative or neighbour. It's an ultimate act of human kindness.

A Carer spends (or intends to spend) a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to someone who is ill, frail, disabled or has a mental health problem or substance misuse problems.

Norfolk County Council has estimated that there are 94,691 carers in the county. (Health watch survey 2013-2014).

Carers are enormously significant in the provision of effective, person-centred care. The value that the care they provide has been estimated by Norfolk County Council to equate to £1.6 billion pounds annually (nationally, carers are estimated to save statutory services £119bn annually).

MS Society North Norfolk supports those with MS and also their Carers.

They have a weekly day care centre at Southrepps village hall; A monthly drop-in for relaxation, coffee and a chat at Sheringham Community Centre. They fund a one to one counselling support service for those with MS and for their Carers. They also fund support through CAB for help with benefit advice.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER WHEN AUTUMN LEAVES START TO FALL

Everyone has heard the apologies for railway delays due to ‘leaves on the line’ but how do small things like leaves manage to hold up a modern train? Well it seems that when leaves fall on the line, particularly in damp or wet weather, the rolling action of passing wheels compress them, causing a greasy mulch to cover the rails.

This mulch is to railways what ice is to roads. It reduces the adhesion between wheel and rail and acceleration must be reduced to prevent slipping and braking distances extended thereby causing delays.

Leaves are therefore obviously tough and as gardeners we should bear this in mind when making our own leaf mould which is so useful

in the garden. The best quality leaf mould is made from the leaves of oak, beech or hornbeam which decompose quite quickly but all leaves and even conifer needles will eventually break down. Thick leaves like sycamore, walnut, horse chestnut and sweet chestnut need to be shredded before they are added to the pile. Evergreens such as holly and laurel are better shredded and added to the compost heap where they will break down eventually rather than being added to the leaf mould pile.

There are potential problems to watch out for. Leaf mould can become infested with weeds, so use the resulting product cautiously, avoiding formal areas of the garden where weeds would be a serious problem. Street leaves are best avoided as they may be contaminated with litter and rubbish and chemical pollutants.

There are several ways of creating leaf mould but whatever your method it is important to keep the leaves moist: • For the Lazy Gardener. Pile leaves in a sheltered inconspicuous part of your garden and leave them to rot for two years. Alternatively fill black plastic sacks with leaves, perforate the sacks with a knife or garden fork, tie the top loosely and store them out of sight for a couple of years. • For the keen gardener. Build a cage of stakes and chicken wire to contain your leaves and stop them from

blowing away. Decomposition can be accelerated by turning the heap at intervals and also by running the lawn mower over the pile a few times. Grass cuttings can be added to the rotting leaves to add to the nutrient value

Leaf mould can be used in many ways: • Peat substitute. Use leaf mould in place of peat because it has similar qualities and it is a renewable resource • Moisture retaining mulch. Leaf mould can hold up to 500 times its own weight in water. Place it around, but not touching, the crowns of annuals, perennials and vegetables to help them maintain moisture during summer. • Soil conditioner. It is easier for roots to penetrate soil and take up nutrients when the soil is not too dense. Research has found that garden soil enriched with leaf mould had a 20 percent lower bulk density. The improved soil could hold a two-week supply of water for vegetables. • Seedling compost. Mix one part well-aged compost or worm casings for a nutrent rich potting mixture for seedlings.

As a postscript to my previous articles on the anniversary of the First World War I have found a little piece about the building of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, which is the centrepiece of the annual Remembrance Sunday parade. It seems that small shrines decorated with flowers began to appear in the streets of the East End of London from the summer of 1916, while similar private shrines were made in thousands of homes in the absence of the bodies of loved ones. In August 1918, 100,000 people laid flowers at a memorial shrine in Hyde Park. Intended as a temporary structure, it remained in place for more than a year and led to the building of the Cenotaph. The installation of poppies at the Tower of London seems to have had the same effect on the public with the calls for them to be displayed for a longer period. Bob Wilkinson

Norman Lamb welcomes local plan to improve care and reduce hospital visits

NHS England recently approved a local plan to use part of the Government’s national £5.3 billion Better Care Fund to improve care for the elderly and those with complex health needs in Norfolk and reduce hospital admissions.

In Norfolk, health and care organisations are investing £56m in delivering better care. They aim to reduce hospital admission in this area by 3.5%, saving £4.9m to be re-invested in local health and care services.

These local plans are at the heart of the Liberal Democrats’ plan to join up care in local communities, enabling doctors, nurses and carers to work together to support some of the most vulnerable people in society, including 30

the elderly, and those with complex long term conditions.

North Norfolk MP and Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb said “Currently, as a patient you have to negotiate a bewildering array of different organisations to access the care or treatment you need. All too often people can fall through the gaps, ending up in A&E because of uncoordinated care. The Liberal Democrats want to join up different services around the needs of the individual, so health and care organisations work together to provide the best possible care. This approach will help deliver value for money, so that our NHS and care system are protected for the future. But it is also about building a fairer

society - providing dignity to the vulnerable, and making sure people have the support to live their lives to the full.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “This approach will transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable in society. By getting local health and care teams working together to focus on prevention, we can stop families and the NHS from having to pay the price of unnecessary breakdowns in care. The Liberal Democrats are committed to joining up the whole health and care budget in the next Parliament, joining up the whole system around the needs of individual patients. Our health and care services have an essential role to play in giving everyone a fair chance in life."

Council to provide free spaces and remove evening car park charges

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet has approved proposals to introduce ‘mini-stay’ free spaces and to remove evening charges from its car parks from Friday 14 November.

Following recommendations earlier this year, the council was required to undertake a consultation process on the proposals. No objections were received and now the necessary changes can be made to the district’s Car Parking Orders.

To enable residents to ‘pop’ into their local town centre, from 14 November three free 30 minute parking spaces will be provided at Sheringham (Morris Street), Cromer (The Meadow), Fakenham (Bridge Street), Stalham

(High Street), North Walsham (Bank Loke), Holt (Albert Street) and Wells-next-the-Sea (Staithe Street) car parks. These locations cover the district’s seven main towns and these car parks were selected as providing the best town centre locations.

The decision to remove the current evening car parking charges (from 6pm to 11pm) was made following representations from town councils and business organisations. From 14 November parking on all NNDC car parks will be free from 6pm.

Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “we listen carefully to what our residents and community organisations say to us, and if we can respond

positively then we will. I am very pleased that we have found a way to provide a number of free spaces in our seven main town centre car parks and to remove the evening charge.

“Car parking charges will never be welcome, but they do form a significant part of the council’s annual income. Much of the car park income comes from the summer visitors who make use of North Norfolk’s facilities and the rest comes from residents who actually use the car parks.

Without this income we would be unable to provide many of our valuable and important services such as leisure facilities, public lavatories and tourist information services.”

News from charity RESCUE WOODEN BOATS Work has been continuing apace on lifeboat Lucy Lavers, readying her for her return trip to Dunkirk in May 2015, 75 years on, to mark the anniversary of the evacuation of troops from the beaches.

The difficult job of drilling through the keel to fit the centreboard has been completed and the newly forged centre plate is in place. Bronze work has been cleaned and where necessary cast to make additional parts. More coats of Witham paint have been applied to Lucy Lavers’ hull, with more to come. The engine has been stripped and restored and is ready for installation. The new build of the mahogany engine canopy is under way. The sails and spars are ready. You can see films of the work on our website. There will be a celebration of Lucy Lavers re-launch in Wells on Saturday morning April 11 2015 – do put the date in your diary.

Plans are well advanced for Lucy Lavers’ commemorative return to Dunkirk. With a different crew for each leg of the journey, she will be setting off from Wells-next-the-Sea in early May and calling at Lowestoft, Southwold, Aldeburgh, Levington, Harwich and Ramsgate on the way. There will be a big welcome home in Wells towards the end of May. After her return, Lucy Lavers will live in Wells and give pre-booked trips afloat.

w No g tin d t i F a te t R ien ‘A’ effic s sa rgy ene indow ard w and st

Would you like to get involved in the Dunkirk trip? You can: • contribute to a nautical mile (it’s 385 nautical miles and will cost £90 per mile)

• bid for a crew place on one of the nine legs (if you are comfortable being at sea)

• come and meet Lucy Lavers on route

• help at the information/exhibition stands at one of the ports

Do contact us if you would like to join us in this unique historic event. Leaflets with further details are available.

Don’t forget you can come and take a look at the work progressing on Lucy Lavers at the Visitor Centre in Greenway, Stiffkey NR23 1QF - open throughout the winter months on Saturdays and Sundays 10am- 4pm, and which also has nice things to buy – shopping for a good cause!

The Education and Events Room has been decorated by volunteers and is being equipped thanks to a North Norfolk FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group) grant with chairs, tables and electronic equipment in readiness for school and adult visits.

We have had well over 3000 visitors since opening in August 2013. Feedback from our visitors… “fantastic history and workmanship”; “enlightening and fascinating”; “interesting and cool, even for a grumpy teenager”

Over the summer our team has expanded, and we are always looking for more keen friends and volunteers with a few hours to spare.
