Traditional Norfolk Treacle Tart

we raised over £300 for the lifeboats despite hurricane conditions which led to the marquee taking a short flight at 3am, and coming to rest in a controlled crash against the lawn flowerbeds fifty meters away. Hopefully this year we are due some decent weather!

We are still very busy here at the Grove with our Christmas party season underway (though we still have a couple of slots available!) and full houses on Friday and Saturday nights.

This year we're delighted to be repeating our wonderful Christmas Carol Concert, with all proceeds to the fantiastic Cromer RNLI, on Monday 22nd December at 6pm. Last winter

It's a fabulous night so please do come along. We are also raising money for Ollie, 9 year-old nephew to the Gravelings, who is suffering from a horrible cancer behind his knee and is very ill in Brimingham Children's Hospital. Come along on the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th of December wearing your best Christmas jumper and donate for Ollie's fund, which goes to the great work that his doctors and nurses do for sick children in the midlands. We have a great recipe for you this week! There's nothing better at Christmas than a properly traditional pudding that really warms you up, and our Norfolk treacle tart is proving

The Village Inn West Runton

extremely popular this winter. It's a firm favourite with all our diners (and our staff!) so please do pop in to sample it. Happy Christmas from all of us!

Traditional Norfolk Treacle Tart For the short crust: 125g butter 125g lard 500g flour 100ml water

Cut the lard and butter into small cubes, add to flour in a big bowl and rub together until combined. Slowly add the water until thoroughly mixed and is a dough like consistency. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out pastry to ½ cm thick + line our tart case

For the tart: 4 slices of bread to be crumbled in a food processor 1 lemon, zest and juice 6 tablespoons of golden syrup

Heat ingredients in a saucepan until evenly mixed. Set aside to cool a little, poor into tart case you lined with pastry earlier. Bake for 25/30mins on 200/ gas 6 Table serve hot or cold with custard or ice cream.

Ollie and the Christmas Jumper

We are very lucky that the Grove has always been not just a business, but a family home too.

This is Ollie, our cousin Jo's little boy. Ollie is nine and in July he was diagnosed with cancer behind his knee.

He started intensive treatment in the Birmingham Children's Hospital in September and has been possibly the bravest lad you could ever have the privilege to know.

So on 12, 13 and 14 December we are helping Ollie and his sister Kira raise money for the people that are helping Ollie battle this terrible disease.

All you have to do is come in for dinner or Sunday lunch wearing your very finest Christmas jumper - that's right, knitted reindeer and everything - and donate anything from £1 upwards to Ollie's fund. Alternatively you can donate through JustGiving at www.justgiving.com/Kira-Swannell.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in your Christmas jumpers!

Council to provide free parking over the weekend before Christmas

Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s car parks will be free over the weekend before Christmas, 20 and 21 December.

The Council has decided to once again waive pre-Christmas parking charges. This year, following requests from town councils, parking will be free over the weekend of 20 and 21 December, to help persuade local people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies locally, to support North Norfolk’s traders at this crucial time of year, and as a gesture of goodwill for the festive season.

Over the weekend of 20 and 21 December shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any District Council–run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.

Councillor Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “One of North Norfolk District Council’s key aims is to support local businesses and, with Christmas being a critical time for traders, we want to encourage people to use the wealth of shops on their doorsteps. I hope that by investing in some free car parking over the weekend before Christmas we will encourage people to keep their shopping local.”

Holt Festival 19-26 July 2015

Holt Festival is an award winning annual feast of the arts taking place in the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town in the last week of July that has quickly become one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Norfolk calendar. It is also increasingly bringing visitors into the area.

Since its inception in 2009 the festival has featured an international array of music, drama, visual art, literature dance, comedy, free street entertainment, kids shows and workshops, taking over the whole town bringing the streets and venues alive with activity. The Festival has also presented opportunities to see Melvyn Bragg Holt Festival some of the most hotly tipped 2014 Edinburgh Festival shows before they head north. In 2014 it gave Norfolk audiences the chance to see curious directive’s Pioneer which went on to win a Fringe First Award in the Scottish capital. There are also lots of free events for children and families, an internationally acclaimed Art Prize and outdoor events that bring a blaze of colour and activity to the streets of the town.

Previous highlights include names of the calibre of Alan Bennett, Melvyn Bragg, 10CC, The Stranglers, Stephen Fry and Michael Palin. The 2015 event is still being programmed by new artistic Director Charles Pugh who promises that the first names will be announced soon.

Full details will appear at www.holtfestival.org

Northrepps History in The Golden Age

Northrepps in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is brought to life in a new book, The Golden Age, by Graham Ferguson who until recently lived in The Old Foundry. Based on the craft skills of John Golden and his father and grandfather, the book draws on villagers' memories as well as more formal archive sources. The broad range of topics includes foundry work, the Gallas plough, undertaker duties and the local church. As it happens, The Golden Age has recently been celebrated as Poppyland Publishing's 100th book. The book may be obtained from Jarrold's or Poppyland Publishing.

Sheringham Lace Makers

Sheringham Lace Makers meet every Monday afternoon, from 1pm till 4pm in St Andrews Church Hall in Sheringham.

We are friendly and, although it is not a teaching group, there is always someone to help with problems - some of the members are/have been lace tutors. We also have equipment to borrow, as well as many books in our library, which can be borrowed for as long or short a period as is necessary. We arrange workshop days, a summer afternoon tea, Lace Days and a Christmas Lunch at one of our local hotels, as well as putting the world to rights and producing some lovely lace items. We also demonstrate our craft at local fetes and events, so some of you may have seen us locally - or maybe NOT so locally!

Lace-making is a beautiful craft, using beautiful equipment, and Sheringham Lace Makers has several vacancies - people have moved away, have become ill or infirm - so if you are interested please contact Carol Adkinson, Chairman on 01263 570247 or 01263 822075, or on her mobile - mobiles don't work in her village, Gresham! - which is 07946 455162 and she will be pleased to give you more details. Carols for the RNLI

Come and join us at The Grove on 22 December.

After a fabulous debut last winter (despite the hurricane conditions!) we are once again hosting an evening of carols in aid of Cromer RNLI on Monday 22 December from 6pm. There will be the finest mince pies, mulled wine plus lots of other seasonal goodies from our family of wonderful local suppliers. And of course the chance to sing along with the great community that we have here in Cromer.

We managed to raise over £300 last Christmas and it would be great to top that this year - so please do come along!

Win A Free Christmas Hamper!

The idea of a Christmas Hamper is not a new one, they have been around for years, but this year is the first time Icarus Hines has put one together.

The launch coincides with the revamping of the website. In previous years you could download a paper order form to take into the shop but now it’s a full Click & Collect experience.

“I’m a modern butcher and thought it was about time we caught up with the modern shopping experience. People are short of time these days so what better way to get Christmas dinner sorted than to be able to go online and get everything you need, be it a Hamper or choosing from our Christmas range. What’s more, order a hamper and you might get it for free.” said Icarus.

Everyone who orders a Christmas Hamper, either online or in store will be entered into a prize draw to win their Hamper for free. For further details visit www.icarushines.co.uk.

A Musical Festive Treat!

The Cromer Orchestra will be performing a selection of popular festive music at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots) on Thursday 11 December at 7.30pm. The programme will include Christmas favourites, traditional carols and a special guest appearance by Southrepps based Cantamus Choir, singing music by John Rutter and John Taverner. This will be the first time that the orchestra and choir have performed together, so come along and show your support for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Tickets are priced at £5 for adults/£2.50 for under 18s and include refreshments. Tickets are either available on the door, or in advance from Cromer Tourist Information Centre or Kirkhams Hardware store. New players are always welcome to join the orchestra, particularly string and brass players. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at The Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand starting at 7pm. For more details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.

Cantamus are a mixed voice, non-auditioned choir who rehearse in Southrepps church on a Thursday evening from 7.30-9.30 under the direction of David Ballard. The choir is always looking to recruit new singers, particularly in the alto, tenor and bass sections; for further details please email davidballard@hotmail.co.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

I am happy to report that Leo came through his operation and when I saw him that evening he was full of life and raring to go. This lovely little kitten has been reserved and will be going to his new home as soon as he is given a clean bill of health and had his first vaccination. Great news also on Abi and Edd, two of the other kittens mentioned last time, as they will have left for their new home when you read this. Little Edd in particular stole our hearts as he is such a loving kitten and full of character. Sadly, not all good news though as Itzy, one of the little kittens caught in September, had to be put sleep on our vet’s recommendation as he had a serious health problem. Despite the number of kittens in care we are still sad to lose even one.

The lady we thought might be able to offer our old cat Aggie a home was not able to do so. As Aggie may have renal problems we are monitoring her health at the moment to check how serious this is. With the right medication and lots of loving care this should not be a problem for this old cat and she is now safe and well with a nice bed to sleep on.

Lepto4 Vaccination

Cats with renal problems can survive for years, as I know from personal experience.

Although recent articles have mostly been about the numbers of kittens we have had this year (and yes, they still continue to arrive, with another 10 in care since the last article), we have recently re-homed Leo several of the older cats who had been with us some time. Cats like 8 year old Fernie who came in because he was stressed living in a multi cat household, Billie and Betsie (both 6 years old) who had been abandoned in a block of flats, and Sir Andrew (12 years) and Michael (5 years) also abandoned, but this time because their owners now had a dog.

January 2015 we will be starting a new programme to include the new Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise if this potentially fatal disease.

In

Whether your dog is

Small

or

Big

The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter.

Woodland Trust Chief Executive visits Pretty Corner Woods

Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services and Nick Baker, NNDC Strategic Director, welcomed Beccy Speight, Chief Executive, Sue Roe, Ambassador and Mike Ryder, Site Manager, of the Woodland Trust, to Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, on 29 October.

Pretty Corner Woods (30.3Ha) is owned by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), while the Woodland Trust (WT) own and manage 32.2Ha of woodland to the south east, known as Old Wood. A further 10.0Ha of woodland to the north east, sold to Sheringham Town Council by Anglian Water in 2006, is leased to the WT and is included within their management operations.

A network of paths provides walks with spectacular views over Sheringham and the coast, and easy access paths are available for people seeking less strenuous walks. The

woods provide a home for a wide range of native wildlife and depending on the season visitors can expect to see birds such as buzzard, nuthatch and gold crest. Butterflies are numerous, especially the comma, gatekeeper and white admiral. Even glow worms can sometimes be seen at night in the more open areas.

For the past three years NNDC has been contracted by WT to undertake site management work on the WT part of the woods alongside its own area. Since 2011, major improvements have been undertaken, including path and ride maintenance, steps, fence construction and the clearance of invasive vegetation as well as resurfacing to the public car parks, path improvements, boardwalks to improve access, and clear markers and interpretation panels.

WT Chief Executive Beccy Speight was visiting the site to look at the management regime being operated by NNDC over the whole area and to discuss the excellent progress with NNDC Officers and Members.

For the past three years WT and NNDC staff have jointly staged a Summer Fair. In 2012 it attracted 700 visitors and in 2013 it attracted 1200 visitors, with 1600 in 2014. This event has consistently been the best attended event that the NNDC Countryside and Parks Team offer and it is to be repeated again in 2015.

The total cost of the scheme was £186,000 and funding was successfully secured by WT from the Forestry Commission Woodland Improvement Grant, evin ardy Heritage Lottery Fund, Leader and the SELECTED USED CARS Woodland Trust Legacy Fund with NNDC providing

Beccy Speight, Woodland Trust Chief Executive, said “I was delighted to see first-hand the results of such a successful partnership with a local authority; which has enabled great conservation work and a wonderful visitor experience to exist side by side.”

Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “I am extremely proud of the work that the countryside rangers undertake at Green Flag award winning Pretty Corner Woods. Working so successfully with the Woodland Trust has seen the Woods go from strength to strength making them an even better place for wildlife and people to visit”.

HAYES + STORR ELDERLY CLIENT SERVICES Written by Fiona Hewitt – Director at Hayes + Storr

North Norfolk is a great place to live and it is not surprising that many people choose to retire here. Its relative remoteness is part of its charm, but also has occasional drawbacks, particularly if friends and family are far away at times when you need extra help.

At Hayes + Storr we have a large Private Client department, covering all aspects of ‘private client’ law, including wills and probate, powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications, tax, trusts and claims against estates. We encourage all our clients to have a valid will in place, as well as Lasting Powers of Attorney to deal with the possibility that you may not be able to deal with your own affairs in the future. As people get older, it becomes increasingly important to make sure that all their legal affairs are up to date.

However, we know that in many cases, older people have other practical concerns which also need to be addressed. An important part of our Private Client department is our ‘Elderly Client’ team, consisting not only of specialists in the law, but also a pastoral visitor and care assessor, a benefits adviser, and a number of administrative assistants. As well as legal advice we can assist you in many other ways, so if you have no friends or family in the area with the time or ability to help, our aim is to ‘fill the gap’ for you. For example, you might need us to: • find a carer, cleaner, gardener or

handyman for you

• find someone to take you shopping

• help you to manage your bank accounts and bills

• arrange for your pets to be looked after if you need to go into hospital

• advise you on your entitlement to care and benefits

• help you find suitable residential care and assist with the practicalities of moving.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHRISTMAS CACTUS

The plant we normally see offered for sale at this time of the year called the Christmas Cactus is part of the genus Schlumbergia and is one of six species found in the coastal mountains of South America.

The plants grow on trees or rocks in habitats which are generally shady with high humidity. Most of the species have stems which resemble leaf-like pads joined one to the other and flowers which appear from aereoles at the joints and tips of the stems. This genus also contains other popular plants such as Thanksgiving Cactus, Crab Cactus and Holiday Cactus. Confusingly the Easter or Whitsun Cactus is placed in a separate genus (Hatiora).

It is believed that Schlumbergias have been in cultivation in Europe since 1818 and due to cross breeding there are now hundreds of

varieties. The aim of breeders was to produce plants which grow strongly, were upright at the point of sale rather than pendulous, had many flowers or buds, and were adapted to living as house plants. Much effort has also produced a wide range of flower colours including yellow. Despite all the confusion over names and botanical classification the following general advice should help you care for any plant you are given as a present or allow you to continue to look after that straggly specimen that granny passed on to you

• Growing medium - Free-draining, humus-rich, somewhat acid growing media are used for the commercial production, such as a mixture of peat or leaf mould and an inert material such as grit or sharp sand. A standard cactus compost or John Innes No.2 with added leaf mould or grit will help to improve drainage. Re-pot once a year (or at least every two years) to maintain healthy growth. This can be done at the end of March which is the beginning of the growing season. • Watering - They are more tolerant of

drought than many house plants, but can be damaged by both under- and over-watering. Keeping the soil just moist throughout the year avoids either extreme. Humidity can

be improved by using gravel filled saucers beneath the plants and keeping these moist.

• Light - They can be damaged by exposure to more than small amounts of sunlight. Too much light causes stems to take on a reddish colour; however, very low light levels will prevent flowering. Day length is important to cause flower buds to form and the ideal is said to be a period of about 8 days with 16 hours of darkness at 16 degrees. • Propagation - Use short pieces of stem, one to three segments long, twisted off rather than cut. Cuttings are allowed to dry for 1-7 days, forming a callus at the broken end, and then rooted in an open growing medium. Temperatures between 21 and 27 degrees centigrade in long day/short night conditions speed rooting • Pests and diseases - These plants are generally free from trouble apart from aphids and mealy bugs. Also look out for rotting of stems and leaves. There are chemical treatments.

Looking forward to next summer these cacti can be placed outside as this will help them ripen new growth and encourage flowering but you will need to protect them from slugs!

First seal pups of the season born at Blakeney Point

The first seal pups were born on Blakeney Point last month, marking the start of a breeding season that could see the National Trust nature reserve become England’s biggest colony of Grey Seals.

Blakeney Point, on the north Norfolk coast, has become famous for its breeding Grey Seal colony in recent years. Since 2001, when 25 pups were born, numbers have increased each year. Last winter, 1,566 pups were born, making Blakeney Point the third largest Grey Seal colony in England.

With numbers of pups born increasing by around 25% each year, Blakeney Point could become England’s biggest colony this year. A couple of weeks into the 2014 season and there are already significantly more pups than last year. By Thursday 13 November, 265 pups had been counted, 63 more than by the same date last year.

and no natural predators, Blakeney Point is a perfect breeding site for Grey Seals.

Ajay Tegala, a National Trust ranger who lives on Blakeney Point, said “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of Grey Seal pups being born at Blakeney Point in recent years. It is great news and a nice reward for all the effort the National Trust team put into caring for the Point, ensuring it is a healthy environment for these beautiful animals.”

Pup survival rates are high. With lots of space

“Grey Seal pups are born on land, with white coats,” added Ajay. “They are fed on their mother’s rich milk for up to three weeks. In this time, they triple in size and shed their white fur. The mother then leaves the pup to fend for itself. Mating takes place soon after pupping. Male seals, bulls, fight for territories and the dominant ones will mate with several females. This makes the colony a dramatic, but dangerous place.”

Blakeney Point is part of Blakeney National Nature Reserve, where the Ranger team protect and monitor the seal colony. For the safety of seals and visitors, the western-most mile of beach and dunes on the Point are fenced off during the breeding season, which runs from 1 November to 1 February. Pups are counted and taken to the RSPCA animal hospital if seriously ill or injured.

On the second Saturday of every month starting on 13 December to 11 April 2015 the Bowls' Committee would like to welcome allcomers to their Coffee mornings from 10 - 12 noon. On Saturday 13 December we are having a mince pie special Christmas Coffee morning with the local Breast Cancer Group having a Gift stall for their own funds and there will also be a raffle, tombola and Christmassy stall for the maintenance of our superb bowling green as well as your cup of coffee so you can sit and chat with friends.

Christmas Celebrations

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

On Thursday 20 November at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, the Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 24 members and our speaker Debbie Thompson, Theatre Director of the Sheringham Little Theatre, who told us the history of the Theatre from its Victorian beginnings to the age of digital projection. SLT was built as a playhouse in 1890, became a cinema in 1938, reverting to live theatre in 1960 when it became the ‘Little Theatre’. In 1973, the owners, SUDC, set up a Society to manage the theatre, but in 1990, serious structural problems necessitated major restoration work which was financed by one of the first National Lottery grants. Debbie joined the management team in 2002, and took her current post in 2008 with responsibility for arranging the programme. In the current fiscal climate, support from County and local Councils is being reduced, and her major task is to balance the books. She has therefore embarked on a number of schemes aimed at improving both cash-flow and profitability. The SLT team now arrange their own film programmes which has allowed a much wider range to be offered . The 2015 summer Rep season will feature five of the most popular plays from the past, and the coming Panto Robin Hood promises to be one of the best ever. Off stage, The Hub coffee shop provides an increasingly popular meeting place for Sheringham shoppers, and often has live music in the evenings. Bruce Bedwell congratulated Debbie for such an enthusiastic and entertaining presentation. New member Andrew Hyatt gave a brief account of his background: although his expertise is in endodontics, with his practise two days per week in Bedford, he also has a Ph.D in biochemistry. He has recently moved to Cromer for his retirement. Dear Margaret,

As previously reported in this paper Norfolk County Council are currently drawing up a residents parking permit scheme shortly to go out to residents for consultation.

I have long called for officers to consider Sheringham for such a scheme. However when I first cast eyes on the proposed scheme in a preliminary stakeholder meeting I was appalled. To be blunt the scheme currently on the table is primarily about filling the County Council's coffers by charging visitors to the town via premium rate on-street pay-and-display. Residents’ parking comes a clear second to monetising parking spaces.

I and members of the Sheringham Parking Action Group are calling on officers to scrap the proposed introduction of pay-anddisplay machines on areas such as the Esplanade, The Boulevard and the centre of town. Please sign our petition online at http://goo.gl/yMw8zj or go into local shops, who will shortly have hard copies. Richard Smith, District Cllr for Sheringham North

Dear Margaret,

I write regarding the insufficiently researched draft parking proposals for Sheringham put forward by Norfolk County Council. To my disappointment they involve introducing premium rate pay and display parking down by the Esplanade where there is currently free, unrestricted parking and pay and display machines throughout Sheringham. This, in my view, will have damaging effects on tourism and businesses. The scheme also looks to introduce residents parking, itself something I support, in such a manner as to cover almost all of Sheringham, north of the main road. This will inevitably prevent as many tourists visiting Sheringham in the height of the summer, leave low-paid workers having to pay for parking and drive the problem of visitors parking into the streets south of the main road. Alexandra Road, Garden Road, Suffolk Road and many others which already of have parking issues will be swamped by those seeking to avoid the proposals. I call on Brian Hannah, the Sheringham County Councillor, who brought these proposals to Sheringham to stop his council from introducing the expensive pay and display parking and provide an evidenced-based scheme for residents parking. We cannot have the County Council waste more public money introducing a scheme which damages the town. Cllrs Richard Shepherd, Richard Smith and I along with members of the Chamber of Trade, Sheringham Enhancement Group and Town Council have set up the cross-party Sheringham Parking Action Group to campaign for a sensible solution to on-street car parking in Sheringham. We do not want Sheringham to be damaged by the County Council using it as a cash cow and want a sustainable solution. However there must be proper consultation and residents must be happy with the proposals. If you want to prevent pay and display parking being introduced on-street the sign our petition at http://goo.gl/yMw8zj or go into local shops who will shortly have hard copies. Yours sincerely, Rhodri Oliver, Conservative Councillor, Sheringham South and Deputy Leader NNDC

Dear Margaret,

I wish to express strong concerns over the introduction of parking permits in the North of Sheringham. While the initial idea sounds really promising, when you start looking into details you will discover that although you may purchase a permit at something like ÂŁ40 each, it does not give you the right to park outside your home, or even in the street if there are no spaces left. This is particularly going to be a problem when you consider that some houses have 3 or more cars registered to that address and so can buy many permits. Furthermore many of us have holiday homes around us and at this moment we are not sure how they will affect the ratio of cars when they very often have 2/3 cars per home per visit. This would mean that all residents will end up paying money to the Norfolk County Council coffers without any added benefit. Added to this residents who live on roads with double yellow lines will have no where to park on the northern side of town unless they have off street parking. Tourists who come into town will have no spaces to park in and will instead have to use the proposed on street pay and display sites which will carry a premium rate after 45 minutes. I am sure we would all agree that at the moment, parking during the season is an inconvenience, especially if we have to go into the next road to park. However with the new system in place we will not have the opportunity to park in another road and so I would suggest that it would be a big mistake to change the parking arrangements in town and strongly urge householders to make sure you look into the details of exactly what is on offer re permit parking before agreeing to it. Norwich Eating Disorder Charity Scoops ‘Team of the Year’ Award

Beat – the UK’s leading eating disorder charity and the only national charity based in Norwich – were proudly named ‘Team of the Year’ at last month’s Eastern Daily Press Stars of Norfolk Awards. Now in its 25th anniversary year, the charity supports people affected by eating disorders and their families, through a rangeof face-to-face, online and helpline support.

Eating disorders affect an estimated 1.6 million people in the UK alone. With a consistently strong media and online presence, Beat campaigns to improve understanding, access to treatment, and to change the way people think about eating disorders – most recently encouraging men with eating disorders to speak up and seek support with its “Beat The Silence” campaign.

FreeAds

Accepting the award, Beat staff acknowledged the essential contribution of more than 1500 volunteers who devote their time to Beat’s jelplines, support groups and online services, fundraising, research or speaking publicly about their personal experiences. Their commitment enables Beat to maintain a national presence.

In Norfolk, Beat has a long-standing partnership with Norfolk Community Eating Disorders Service, providing monthly support groups at the Charing Cross Centre in Norwich, a dedicated Norfolk helpline, and eating disorders awareness training for GPs.

More recently Beat extended its remit to provide support groups for individuals who overeat for emotional reasons, with funding provided by the Department of Health.

Emotional Overeating Support Groups run once a month at separate locations in Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Full details of our local and national support can be found on the Beat website www.b-eat.co.uk.

Lorna Garner, Chief Operating Officer for Beat, commented “This a wonderful acknowledgement of the commitment, energy and drive that all the Beat team puts into the work we do. It is particularly special as Beat grew up from a local Norfolk based charity to become not only a national charity, but also the leading eating disorder charity in the UK, and we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary year this year. This award has given every member a great sense of achievement, and we thank you for selecting us.”

North Norfolk District Council celebrates ten-year relationship with Holt Day Centre

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is celebrating ten years of working together successfully with volunteers from Holt Day Centre at Green Flag award-winning Holt Country Park. For the last ten years, NNDC’s Countryside Rangers have been joined by volunteers from Holt Day Centre to undertake practical conservation work including building a sensory garden, making butterfly habitats, planting trees, gardening and creating habitats for mini beasts and amphibians.

Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Many of the projects that have been completed at Holt Country Park could not have been done so without the help of the volunteers from Holt Day Centre. Together with our Countryside Rangers, they have formed an enduring partnership that I hope will continue for many more years to come. “The volunteers have made a significant contribution to improving the natural environment at Holt Country Park while building confidence and self-esteem and developing strong working relationships with the Rangers”

John Orris, Holt Day Centre Supervisor, added “I’ve been bringing groups of volunteers to Holt Country Park for the last ten years and have witnessed the pleasure and the satisfaction they’ve gained from carrying out many different tasks, including the recent construction of the popular sensory garden.

“I am extremely proud of the attitude of the Holt Day Centre members and their positive contribution to the Park. I would also like to pay tribute to the Rangers who have worked with us so successfully. Their patience and skills and the cheerful manner in which they work really motivates the members who thoroughly enjoy their time at the Park.” Shrubs and a selection of gardening tools were presented to John Orris and the Holt Day Centre members by Cllr. Williams at an event held at Holt Country Park on Wednesday 19 November in recognition of the successful ten-year partnership.

British jobs market surging forwards – Norman Lamb

Britain’s economy has created a new job every minute of every working day with Liberal Democrats in Government, Norman Lamb has said. The North Norfolk MP was responding to news that unemployment fell by 115,000 in the last quarter. Between July and September unemployment dropped to 1.96 million the 18th consecutive quarterly fall.

Office of National Statistics figures also show earnings, excluding bonuses, rose by 1.3% in the year to September, ahead of the 1.2% Consumer Prices Index inflation rate. Employment now stands at a record high of 30.8 million, with 1.7million new jobs created since the Liberal Democrats entered Government.

Cromer welcomes a new Model Shop

Buoys Toys & Models, opened in July, and is located opposite the tourist Information Centre and specialises in modelling supplies and accessories.

Dave Medhurst, a modeller himself, wanted to create an olde worlde Dickensian style toy shop with small-paned windows, subdued lighting, beams and plenty of nooks and crannies. The shop goes much of the way to realising his vision with stock spilling across four rooms. It does thankfully fall short of recreating any of the dirt, dust and cobwebs associated with shops of that time!

So if you enjoy creative hobbies, or are simply looking for that special gift, then they may have just the thing for you. The shop is all about face-to-face sales, hence there’s currently no website, so you’ll need to pop in for a browse! You can however keep an eye on shop developments via Facebook (buoystoysandmodels) and for more day-to-day information Twitter (BuoysToysCromer).

The shop’s regular opening hours are Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat 09.30 – 17.00.

Buoys Toys & Models, 30 Louden Road, Cromer, NR27 9EF 01263 519652

Photos © Anthony Upton (BRC)

There are plenty of materials for modellers such as woods, plastics and metals, and these rub shoulders with scenics, paints, fillers, glues, small electrical components and other odds and ends that you didn’t even know you needed! If you’re a collector then it might be worth taking a peek in the display cabinets that house a varied selection of diecast models. The shop has an underlying creative theme

so you’ll find a whole host of kits and bits to suit many tastes. There is also a small developing shopthemed dollshouse section and a range of miniature hardware items, such as screws, hinges and clasps, for many a craft project.

Could you spare some time? Would you like to support people in your community? We are recruiting volunteers for our Older People’s Outreach Service across North, South and West Norfolk. The service supports older people to build and maintain confidence, self-esteem and to live safely and independently in their own homes.

Campaign to save Mental Health Services

We in the Campaign to save Mental Health Services in Norfolk and Suffolk find it hard to stomach Norman Lamb’s continuous efforts to present himself as the champion of the mentally ill. He has been a Health Minister and Secretary of State with special responsibility for social care and mental health for 4 years now. Under his watch funding for mental health has actually fallen for the first time for many years creating a national crisis in the provision of acute psychiatric care (over 1700 beds have been lost nationally).

In Norfolk and Suffolk, the so-called Nicholson challenge has meant a cut of £40 million over the last 4 years leading to the decimation of community care for the most vulnerable, the abolition of community mental health nurses who were attached to GP surgeries, the closure of specialist assertive outreach teams which provided intensive support and monitoring of the most severely mentally ill, the loss of the Mental Health Homeless Team in Norwich, and the loss of over 120 beds in Norfolk and Suffolk. Crisis Teams – one of Norman Lamb’s pet subjects – have also been badly hit by downgrading of staff and the loss of experienced practitioners. Currently, the main provider of mental health services, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), is in a precarious financial state and because of concerns about the standard of care has just been subject to an intensive inspection by the CQC. At any one time if any of your readers requires an urgent admission to psychiatric hospital it is unlikely that this will be to a local hospital. Last week there were 48 patients from Norfolk scattered across the country in hospitals in places as far away as Darlington and Weston-super-mare (see our attached Map of Shame).Other patients experience serious delays before they can be admitted and some have had to be held illegally in police custody until a bed can be found. Despite this dire situation NSFT are now facing a further 5 years of cost-saving (the 1.8% deflator) which will mean a further £40 million of cuts over the next 5 years and even more redundancies and loss of services.

Norman Lamb is fully aware of these problems because we have let him know consistently the full extent of the crisis, and to be fair to Mr Lamb he is very supportive of individuals who come to him for help, and therefore has a good grasp of the situation on the ground. However, he claims he is helpless to do anything about the funding crisis because NHS England are independent of government, He says he campaigns on behalf of mental health and now has a petition for the future funding of the NHS. But is he not a Minister in the current Government? Why does he need to campaign against himself? He and his fellow MPs voted for the Health and Social Care Bill which created our current system of funding. What is the point of voting for Mr Lamb if even as a Health Minister he is helpless? The Liberal Democrats are once again making promises about the future funding of mental health services, but we remember Clegg’s record on tuition fees. If you would like to support the Campaign please visit our website http//norfolksuffolkmentalhealthcrisis.org.uk/ or contact us on 01263 825967. We are holding an anniversary open meeting on 27/11/14 at 7.30 pm Vauxhall Centre, Norwich, where we will be debating the above issues and planning the next steps in our campaign. ALL WELCOME. Terry Skyrme, on behalf of the Campaign to Save Mental Health Services in N&S.

Mental Health Issues - Norman Lamb Responds

There has always been an institutional bias against mental health in our NHS, and in society. When the last government legislated for waiting time standards in physical health, they left out mental health. When they introduced a right to patient choice for hospital treatment, they left out mental health. And when they set up “Payment by Results” to tackle long waiting lists, Labour left out mental health. This has inevitably meant that, when money is tight, mental health loses out in local spending decisions.

As health minister, I have been determined to tackle this. We have legislated to be clear that mental health must have complete equality with physical health in the NHS. In April this year we extended the right of choice to include mental health treatment. And at the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow last month, we announced from next year the first waiting time standards for mental health too, so most patients will be guaranteed access to talking therapies in as little as six weeks from referral. We will also introduce a new standard next year to start treatment within two weeks of a first episode of psychosis.

At the same time as we announced these new standards, we published a five year vision for the introduction of comprehensive access and waiting time standards across mental health. The aim is to achieve real equality for those suffering mental ill health. These announcements were enthusiastically welcomed by charities nationally. It was described as a watershed moment.

We are also tackling the unacceptable inequality in mental health crisis care: Norfolk recently signed up to the “Crisis Care Concordat”, which sets clear national standards for emergency treatment. And in 2015/16 we are investing £30m extra in liaison psychiatry to make sure that psychiatric help is available in A and E departments.

But I am far from complacent: the fact is that in much of the country mental health services are still nowhere near good enough. In particular services for young people are sometimes completely unacceptable. I launched a Task Force earlier this year to look at how we can modernise services, improving access and ending the current “cliff-edge” when people move from under-18 to adult services. And as part of my current campaign (www.normanlamb.org.uk) to secure extra funding for the NHS next year, I am hoping we can secure investment to start delivering the improvements to young people’s services we desperately need.

North Norfolk MP recognised nationally for work on mental health

This week North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has been recognised by two organisations for his work on mental health.

Norman attended a ceremony with the Political Studies Association to accept their annual award for "Best use of evidence in policy making", recognising his work in driving reform of mental health services that have been neglected for far too long.

The judges for the PSA award said, “Norman Lamb was the unanimous winner of this award for his outstanding work on mental health. His work with the Royal College of Nursing, Skills for Health and Skills for Care to develop new guidance for professionals as well as workforce training guidelines must also be strongly commended”.

The judges also praised Lamb for his launch of Positive and Safe, a two-year programme to end the deliberate use of face-down restraint in all health and care settings.

Norman Lamb said, “It is a real honour to have been recognised by the Political Studies Association and Nuffield College for my work on mental health, and more generally. Mental health is an area that has been neglected for far too long and I am determined to ensure patients can access the support they need.”

MP presents cheques to local health charities after fundraising cycle ride North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recently presented a cheque to Cromer Hospital following his 100 mile fundraising bike ride in September. The money raised was put towards the purchasing of a new ophthalmology laser, nabling more patients to receive specialist eye treatment locally.

Norman Lamb said “It is a pleasure to be able to present cheques to the charities and hospitals we raised money for in September. It was good that we were able to support the acquisition of the new laser for Cromer Hospital which will provide new ophthalmological services for North Norfolk residents. Seeing the money put to good use makes everyone’s effort seem absolutely worthwhile”. Norman Lamb also visited other hospitals and charities across the constituency to present their cheques

with two other presentations at Kelling Hospital and at Wells.

Iain MacKechnie Jarvis, Chair of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said ‘We are so delighted that Norman Lamb included us in the charities he was supporting on his sponsored cycle ride. The money he has raised for us will go towards the purchase of a new renal dialysis machine for our Renal Unit which provides vital holiday respite treatment for those needing regular renal dialysis."

fortunate to have these wonderful services here in North Norfolk and I was pleased to be able to do my bit to support them. A total of £7200 is a really fantastic sum and I am incredibly grateful to all those who donated over the past weeks”.

Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received will be worth over £7,200 to local charities. Norman Lamb explained “We are very
