Local Author wins Book of the Month Award

Bretwalda Books recently announced that their Independent Panel of Readers have chosen "Douglas Bader" by Norfolk-based historian Michael Evans, who lives just outside Cromer, to be November's Book of the Month.

Sheringham Youth Zone

Sheringham Youth Zone is celebrating its first year anniversary. With over 100 youngsters signed up the Club sees on average 50 every Friday night.

The book is a biography of heroic RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader who fought throughout the Battle of Britain despite having lost both his legs in an earlier aircraft crash.

Without doubt the most famous RAF fighter ace of World War II, Douglas Bader joined the air force in 1928, but was invalided out after an horrific crash in 1931 cost him both his legs. After learning to walk and fly again, Bader rejoined the RAF in 1939, fighting over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain. In the later stages of the Battle, Bader played a leading role in the “Big Wing Controversy” that continues to divide military experts to this day.

Editorial Director Rupert Matthews says “There was some stiff competition in November from other books that we have out. In the end our Independent Panel of Readers settled on the biography of Douglas Bader. It is a worthy winner indeed. My congratulations to author Michael Evans.”

During their first year they have welcomed many guests including a watercolour workshop by Martin Sexton a knitting night with the ladies from Sheringham WI, a photographic workshop with Chris Taylor and many more.

Julie Chalmers who saw a need for a safe place for youngsters to meet and have fun in a safe environment said "The feedback from parents and youngsters is amazing, the success of the club is due to Sheringham’s wonderful youngsters, an enjoyable and varied programme of activities, a great team of volunteers, not forgetting the great support given from Sheringham Town council and the continued help and support given by the venues caretakers."

Any further information about the group please contact 07772737862. Sheringham Youth Zone are presently fund raising for an onsite defibrillator - any donation or fund raising ideas welcomed.

The Rose Bower, a collection of a dozen rose-themed short stories

Local author Joy Hodge has written a collection of a dozen rose-themed short stories, which have been developed from homework assignments from a creative writing course she attended locally.

The stories range in time from the 18th century to the present day and the settings include grand 18th century houses, modern offices and ordinary homes. There is a wedding, a suicide, and a death by drowning. Roses grown for both commemorative and national exhibition purposes are featured. The stories include a rose treasured by a soldier through his service in the Second World War and new beginnings for a wife in the aftermath of the loss of her husband. In contrast the goings on at a Garden Club and the conflict of a gardener who wants to decimate his wife’s beloved rose, offer a counterpoint of humour. Nostalgia for the rosebuds of childhood is revealed and there is a final waft of the scent of roses from beyond the grave.

The book is available from Jarrolds of Cromer, Watts of Sheringham and The Holt Bookshop. For further information please contact Joy Hedge on 01263 510392

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

Christmas is nearly upon us and we are very busy with Christmas parties, and our Christmas Day Luncheon is fully booked.

We do have a few places left in our restaurant for our New Years Eve Dinner but my advise is to book as soon as possible because I am certain they will not be available for very long.

New Years Eve is also our Party in the Bar with Chris Wilson performing a blend of rock and blues featuring the songs of Buddy Holly and Paolo Nutini creating a rich musical treat with songs from the 50s to today and an ideal way to see in the New Year. We are already planing our menus for the new year and will be announcing this very shortly.

I am pleased to confirm that your ‘Buy One Get One Free’ lunchtime offer will be available through January and February every Monday to Friday lunchtime and on Wednesday evenings our popular ‘Theme Nights’ will be back with a range of tempting dishes to bring a little cheer to winter evenings Don’t forget the annual Overstrand Pantomime in February, this years it’s Jack and Alice in Overstrandland, tickets are on sale from 5th January at the pub.

So may I wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on behalf of everyone at the White Horse, Overstrand.

Nathan

Nathan Boon’s Recipe Cranberry Sauce

WHAT’S ON WHERE

‘Calm Before the Peace’ on Sunday 21 December 4pm – 5pm at Lighthouse, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT – free admission - a Christmas celebration of drama and carols for all the family. Seasonal refreshments

A lifetime experience! Thanks to the wonders of modern digital technology Sheringham Little Theatre is now linked to the world by state of the art satellite.

Debbie, Theatre Director, is planning a programme of opera and ballet, specially selected for our local audience and beamed from all over the world, the Royal Opera House, the Bolshoi, the ENO and other venues but the inaugural production is not to be missed.

On Saturday 31 January at 7pm we will transmit a spectacular production of Madama Butterfly from Australia performed by Opera Australia in conjunction with Handa Opera.

This once in a lifetime production is set on a 42m wide floating pontoon stage in Sydney

Class change

The Keeping Abreast Group invite you to a Coffee and Chat Drop in Session at Merchants Place Church Street Cromer on Wednesday 14 January 2015, 10 am to 12 midday. Join us for coffee and a chat and find out more about Breast

Harbour with the iconic Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Sydney skyline as a backdrop – the Bridge is even used for a firework display during the wedding scene. It is a filmed production so you can see a trailer on YouTube and it is incredible but reviews from people who actually saw it are even more impressive.

“Spectacular, momentous, want to see it again and again and again”. “Heart-wrenching”. “The most memorable performance I have ever attended”. “Breathtakingly beautiful”. “Simply fantastic- not a dry eye in sight”. “Every human being should experience this special event. Wonderful does not really describe it!”. “The night metamorphosised into one of magic”. These are real quotations from real people.

If you love opera (or even if you want to dip your toe in the water) this is definitely not to

Reconstruction following Breast Cancer. Volunteers who have had breast reconstruction will be on hand to offer support, provide information and chat about reconstruction in an informal and relaxed atmosphere

be missed and a sell-out performance will reinforce the demand for world class opera and ballet in Sheringham. The future of the performing arts transmissions depends on this inaugural performance.

Tickets are now on sale at £20 with the usual concessions available and should you think this is expensive, opera lovers in Sydney paid over £200 for a ticket so you will be getting a bargain to see something you will remember forever. Note that the Little Theatre is the only venue in North Norfolk taking this satellite transmission.

Due to an instructor change the Pilates class intended to start on Monday 12 January 2015 has been moved to Monday 9 February at East Runton Village Hall with Teresa 10am - 11am.

We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. For more information please contact Wyn 01263 516305

The Cromer Society Spring Lecture Course

Also remember to book by 31 January 2015 for the 28 February 2015 performance of "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller

Meet the Pastons: 400 Years of Norfolk History Revealed Through the Paston Letters’That is the title of a 10-week course on Wednesday mornings, starting on 14 January at 10am and given by Dr. Robert Knee, chairman of the Paston Society at the Cottage, Louden Road, Cromer.

The Pastons rose to prominence on the death of Sir John Fastolf (who is partly reflected in Shakespeare’s character Falstaff). Controversy followed as recorded by this vast and precious collection of letters. Judge William Paston had secured the manors of “Cromere, Schypden and Ropers” with his wife Agnes, inheriting a life interest on the death of her husband. They owned

many other manors in Norfolk and there will be an opportunity to visit Paston places in Norwich. At times, Dr. Knee will wear the costumes of the various Pastons to present his course.

Dr. Knee at Oxnead Hall (another Paston Property) and dressed as a Paston – but which one? Come to the course and find out!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As we approach Christmas once again it’s time to reflect on what has happened this year. At the time of writing we have had 245 cats and kittens in care this year, with 192 having been found loving new homes? Our latest arrivals joined us on 6th December, a lovely little black cat with her six 10 day old black kittens, now safely tucked up in a pen with Kelly whose children are delighted to see the new arrivals. During the year we have Not, who came into care at five days old with her brother Spot lost 3 cats, 2 were kittens with serious health problems and the other cat Max, 19 years old, had been in the home of his fosterer as a Golden Oldie, enjoying the benefits of being in a home but with support from the branch for medical bills.

Several of the cats in care have needed dentals which made for happier cats, while others have had major surgery : cats like Billie, eye removed, Patsy, bladder operation, Duchess, tail removed and Not, whose foot was amputated and who will need further surgery when she is older. When cats come in from outside situations or multi cat households we also do blood tests to check for FIV/FELV and if the initial tests come back “positive” they are re-tested at an external laboratory. Thankfully only three cats were initially positive, one coming back negative from the external source. The two FIV positive cats are now happily settled in indoor homes. Because our fosterers follow the guidelines laid down by Cats Protection we are able to contain any infections and generally all our cats have happy and healthy lives while in care.

Our fundraisers have been very busy this year, not only at our major events but also selling at car boots, table top sales, street collections and on line to help fund the work we do. Two of our ladies, Barbara and Valerie who do not live in our area, deserve a special mention as they have raised over £1000 at events in their area and came to our Christmas Sale where they ran the jewellery stall.

It has been a challenging year but also very rewarding. Seeing the cats that have been in care happily settled in their homes makes it all worthwhile. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and to wish them a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Charity Fundraising

In September, Schola Cantorum, Gresham’s chamber choir, and jazz band performed a concert for The Rotary Club of Holt and District which raised a magnificent £1,460.

Pictured from left to right: Emily Joice, Mr Douglas Robb (Headmaster), Roger Percival, Michael Elsom (Rotary Club of Holt and District), Grace Douds and Helena Dye

Thanks to the generous monies raised that evening, half this amount will now be donated to the Scout Group in Holt to help fund repairs of their hut roof with a further £730 being donated to Gresham’s School’s charity of the year, The Olpalagilagi Primary School in Kenya. As a result, on Monday 8th December, Roger Percival and Michael Elsom from the Rotary Club of Holt and District attended a Gresham’s chapel service to make the presentation. During the service they thanked Gresham’s pupils and staff for their support in raising such a generous sum of money and presented the school with a cheque for £730.

A Norfolk Business History lesson was given to Holt and District Probus Club on 4 December. This very entertaining talk was given by Christopher Armstrong and was intriguingly titled Mustard, Boots and Beer.

Mr Armstrong, now retired from a senior position with Aviva (formerly Norwich Union, of course), was talking about the characters featured in his book about Norfolk business men of the 19th century who had been involved with - Mustard, Boots and Beer. And other things.

Mustard needed no explanation - JJ Colman, of course. Boots - this referred to Sir George White who as Chairman and joint Managing Director of Hewlett and White was the inspiration for the Norvic shoes business. And Beer: this was John Patteson of Steward & Patteson, “The largest of the Norwich Breweries.

The talk also included the founder of Jarrolds (John Jarrold), Sir Robert Harvey of Crown Bank, AJ Caley (chocolate) and Sir S Morton % ' $ ( Peto (who built railways and was the owner of Somerleyton House). All had interesting SERVICE IS NOT EXPENSIVE - IT’S PRICELESS ! tales as told by Christopher, all of Norfolk, and some of considerable notoriety!

Last Night of the Blickling Proms back by popular demand Early bird tickets available at only £29 until 31 January 2015!

Following popular demand after the success of the event over the last three years, Revival Productions are delighted to announce that on Saturday 8 August 2015, Blickling Estate will again be playing host to a grand, British Proms spectacular; an evening full of fun and nostalgia. The 2015 event will be celebrating a very special 75th anniversary for Blickling itself, so concert organisers have decided to throw a “1940s party!” to mark the occasion and Early Bird tickets are now on offer at just £29 (available until 31 January 2015); the perfect Christmas present for someone special.

So why is 2015 such an important anniversary year for Blickling? The estate’s last private owner, Philip Kerr, the 11th Marquess of Lothian, died in December 1940. This visionary man bequeathed the Blickling Estate to the National Trust, setting the seal on the National Trust Country Houses Scheme, which grew from an idea he had formulated with the help of James Lees-Milne. Under this scheme, many estates were saved rather than being broken up, and whole houses and their contents could be donated to the nation intact, in place of death duties. The Blickling Estate was the first of all the major properties to be left to the National Trust in this way.

“It’s going to be a special year for Blickling”, said Jo Bosch, Marketing & Visitor Manager at the National Trust Blickling Estate: “We have

some fresh and exciting things up our sleeves for visitors to see next year which will really celebrate the legacy that this visionary man left. The Proms is one of the year’s signature events, and we’re so pleased that the 2015 concert theme will help us to tell his story.”

clude with a stunning fireworks finale over the lake, choreographed to the music.

There’s plenty to celebrate so come and join the party. The Grace Spitfire will introduce the evening with a choreographed routine to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain” which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Seranade” by Glenn Miller, the main theme from “Gone with the Wind”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn. The second half will include all the traditional proms favourites like the British Sea Songs, Nimrod, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory. As is customary at these events now, song sheets will be provided so that the crowd can join in and sing along with their friends. The evening will con-

Sheringham Ladies Association

Our speaker on 25 November, David Frost, gave us the history of Binham Priory.

Founded in 1091 with 2,000 acres of land, it was a dependent house of St Albans Abbey, but was suppressed by Henry 8th in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries. It was sold to Thomas Paston who demolished the buildings so that the stone could be used for building purposes. The Priory was endowed with the whole of Binham village, so that the Abbot was also Lord of the Manor and set amongst farm fields with cows grazing nearby, the Monastic ruins are in a very tranquil setting. The 13th Century Nave is now the Parish Church and is open nearly every day during the year, containing much of its history.

Our delicious Christmas Meal on 2 December was provided by Mr Otty and his family, and a very happy evening was enjoyed by all the ladies, ending as usual with Christmas singing!

On 13 January our meeting will commence at 8pm when Sandra and Jo will tell us about flower essences.

Dates for your diary:

27 January - "What's in your cosmetics?" - Speaker Gemma Gumby 7.45pm for 8pm

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER NEPAL EXPEDITION 2014

and, as very few of the plants had enough flowers remaining to confirm identification, some surprises too.

Earlier in the year I mentioned that I had helped to sponsor a plant hunting and seed collecting expedition in Nepal by a team of expert botanists and gardeners. The plant hunters are now safely home and I have received a copy of their travel diary and a share of the seeds they collected.

Their story contains many highs and lows but they did manage to collect seed from 95 unusual alpine plants. It was a hard and sometimes difficult trek and many of the ripe seeds were in extremely small amounts but my 25 packets contain many interesting varieties and I hope to grow some lovely new things

The expedition started in Kathmandu where the group took a light plane and flew into a small airstrip in the Eastern Himalayas. After two long bumpy days on a twisty mountain road their jeep reached a slightly run-down hostel at the end of a muddy pot-holed track. It was traditionally furnished, with horse hair mattresses and the traditional hole–in-the-floor toilet.

They then started the trek along remote trails on which they did not see another tourist and climbed a very rough and rocky pathway following a glacial torrent. They first saw an impressive stand of hedychiums but whilst collecting seeds they found their bare legs covered in leeches. This was the last day they wore shorts! They next encountered a venomous snake which the sherpas drove off with rocks while warning the group that this species could in fact fly at them.

The Beauty Salon at Cromer Country Club

Our goal is to pamper you from head to toe.

Champney’s trained staff are here to offer you a warm, friendly and professional service and our aim is to ensure your experience exceeds your expectations. We offer a full range of Gatineau facials, Leighton Denny manicures, pedicures and gel nails, a wide range of massages & maintenance treatments along with the option of tailored bespoke packages. No membership required & free onsite parking.

One night they slept on straw mats and mattresses filled with yak hair on the porch of a local house. One member was woken by what he thought was someone stroking his hand but it was a rat and he had also been bitten by bed bugs.

However they also spent happy days taking photos in the thin mountain air and on climbing still higher found a plateau and lake which despite the heavy grazing of yaks held a treasure trove of fabulous flowers. Sheets of the rare Gaultheria trichophylla clung to the large boulders displaying clusters of ultramarine berries, contrasting prettily with the pillar-box red fruits of the equally prostrate Cotoneaster glacialis. There were also seed heads on the plants of the blue Himalayan poppy and also yet another treasure, Rheum nobile, the ‘Noble Rhubarb’, an alpine gardeners dream.

Finally they climbed above the levels where the yaks grazed and suddenly there were the plants that they had dreamed about and only seen in photos including the rare and incredible Megacodon stylophorus, the ‘Dinosaur Gentian’. Only a small number of seeds could be collected of this plant but everyone who sponsored the expedition has received in their parcel a few precious seeds together with seeds of the poppy and rhubarb varieties mentioned above.

The instructions recommend that all the seeds be sown immediately onto peaty compost with some loam and grit mixed in. No extra fertiliser is needed. The seeds are then to be covered very thinly with grit or fine gravel, watered and kept cold in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse until spring when most should germinate.

Many plants they found had no flowers or other clues to identify them exactly (one packet is labelled ‘Red-Berried Creeping Plant’) and the sponsors have been asked to feed back information on plants they manage to get to flower. If there are any expert alpine gardeners in North Norfolk I would be grateful for any help to make sure that I have some successes. (e-mail rwwilkinson@btinternet.com)

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first serious club competition on 3 December. Members who entered a print in the first section, where the specified subject was ‘Bad Weather’, were also allowed to enter the second, open, section.

Judging was done by Adrian Stone, who had visited the club a couple of times before. Adrian is curator of The Photographic Angle, which holds free exhibitions that travel across the UK transforming otherwise empty spaces into temporary galleries. The exhibitions showcase

contemporary work submitted by students, graduates and enthusiasts of the art of photography, giving the public the chance to explore this fascinating medium which can be art, an occupation, or simply a pastime.

David Tottman won the ‘Bad Weather’ section with a photograph of a gull in a very stormy sky, very close to some very stormy breakers on a very rough sea!

David Tottman’s picture Spirit of the Storm

The ‘Open’ section was won by a remarkable close-up

Altogether, Adrian Stone awarded top Judge Adrian Stone marks to six out of just over 50 competing images, and close seconds to another three. The quality of work by the North Norfolk Photographic Society continues to excel.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30 pm in Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Because of Holt Lights switch-on, North Norfolk Photographic Society met at Cley Village Hall on 19 November to hear Andy Langley talk about his work in photography.

Andy is a professional photographer and has a wide range of talents. He started by showing some images of motor and equestrian sport, went on through wedding photography to portraits and discussed his approach to each of these with the members.

Based at his studio near Fakenham, Andy reckons that to do a wedding justice involves around 5 days work. He always has a look at the venue some days before the ‘big day’ and discusses their wishes with the couple so that he can plan the shots he and they want to record the event.

Much of Andy’s work is in North Norfolk, but he also will travel anywhere (almost) and as well as his commission work, he also runs photographic courses which have been well received.

Most of the members of North Norfolk Photographic Society are keen amateurs and they saw another side of the photographic coin with Andy Langley’s fascinating talk, illustrated as it was with a number of his superb images. Meetings of the North Norfolk

Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7:30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Side Chapel Blessing at St Andrew’s

The Blessing of the newly refurbished Side Chapel at St Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham, took place on Sunday 30 November, St Andrew`s Day.

Following a reading and prayer by our Minister, Rev David Philo, our oldest church member, a lifelong Methodist and member of the former Station Road chapel before the building of St Andrew`s, Mrs. Doris West, cut the ribbon to formally open the ‘new’ Side Chapel.

There is artwork by church members on the wall which will be changed season to season and reading material from the bookcase is available to use as you sit there. There will also shortly be a box of toys for use by our young visitors.

The Side Chapel has been transformed into an area suitable for quiet reflection, prayer and Bible Study and is always open to church members and the whole community. A stunning feature of the room is the new stained glass effect window, depicting the

Sheringham Town Council rejects NCC proposals

The PROPOSED Norfolk County Council's Residents Parking Scheme and Pay and Display initiative would be seriously detrimental to all the residents in Sheringham.

It would deter visitors to the town and be harmful to businesses and the local economy.

Sheringham Town Council totally rejects all of the scheme's proposals.

Dear Margaret,

I am writing to pass on my opinions of the current plans for Street Permit Parking on the northern side of Sheringham. I would also like to say it is a pleasure to work with both political parties and how well they are working and pulling together with other community groups in this issue. Although these are in the early stages of consultation it must be noted that no one house or car will be guaranteed to have a parking space near their home or even in the street if the number of permits requested exceeds the parking available in the street, which could quite easily happen if some households request 2 or 3 permits for each of their cars. I myself run a B & B business and although I have parking for my guests, should they decide to take their car elsewhere in Sheringham they are either going to be unable to park if the car parks are full or have to pay a premium on the new on street parking meters that will be installed. This will have an adverse effect on business and will cause an ongoing effect with all the other tourist based businesses in and around the town, which in turn means that Sheringham will no longer be a viable tourist destination and the county council will have driven our holidaymakers to another area where parking is available. Avril Duke-Millar On behalf of Sheringham Enhancement Group Knollside Lodge, Cliff Road, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

I am writing as a concerned homeowner living in Sheringham. I understand from newspaper reports that the area in the boulevard is to have parking meters installed with 45 minutes free time and then a premium charge. As I live in this area any of my visitors are going to have to pay premium parking while visiting me. I am a retired person and looking at the figures it is going to have quite an impact on my life. Many of my friends are unable to walk distances so will find it hard to visit me. I hope that before any more plans are made the Country Council takes issues like this on board and I am sure I am not the only person in this situation. The same issue applies if I go to visit friends who have resident parking, for me to turn up unannounced means that I will have nowhere to park near their homes within the Sheringham area. Although parking can be an issue in the summer months I feel it is better the devil we know rather than bring in a new system that seems geared to fill County Council Coffers. Yours sincerely, Mrs Sally Warwick, Sheringham

20

Dear Margaret,

Having seen a draft of Norfolk County Council's proposals for on-street pay and display and permit parking, I would be interested to understand the rationale behind the specific proposals. I assume that before such a scheme was proposed much computer modelling would have been done to test out the likely effects on both visitors to Sheringham and its inhabitants. It would be interesting to learn what assumptions were made as to the effect of charging for on-street parking, in areas that are currently free, on visitor numbers. Would it deter people from coming to Sheringham for both holidaying and shopping? In addition what would be the likely knock on effects to both local traders and holiday accommodation providers? Have these effects been taken into account in the cost benefit analysis which must surely have been carried out? When it comes to the permit parking proposals what assumptions were made as to where workers in the town would park, bearing in mind that there is currently insufficient car parking spaces in the municipal car parks? Certainly no one who commutes into the town would be able to afford to pay for a day's on-street parking, which I understand to be at a premium rate. Presumably the modelling has shown that all that would happen is that the roads south of the Cromer Road would become the parking area of choice thereby just moving the congestion from the north of the town to the south. Meanwhile the streets of Sheringham North would be relatively clear during the day much to the frustration of visitors to the town unable to park there. Having considered the draft proposals I can only come to the conclusion that, although on the face of it permit parking seems attractive to residents, when combined with pay and display on-street parking they are a knee jerk reaction whose sole reason is to raise money for the County Council. I await with interest to be proved wrong. Meanwhile anyone concerned about the impact the introduction of pay and display on-street parking in Sheringham may have on the town should consider signing the on-line petition. Visit www.edp24.co.uk for a link to the petition. Yours sincerely, Bob Smith

Dear Margaret,

It is vitally important that the residents of Sheringham realise what is being proposed with respect to parking in the town by Norfolk County Council, vigorously supported by Councillor Brian Hannah. Every single street in the north of the town will be pay and display whether by residents permit or hourly ticket. There will be no guarantee that residents will be able to park outside their house and no guarantee they will be able to park on the street where they live. Visitors will still be able to park on the streets by purchasing hourly tickets at a "premium" rate. Nothing will change regarding parking congestion but everyone will have to pay. Every street will have a maximum stay, by hourly ticket, of three hours. Currently the maximum stay on Station Road and the High Street is 45 minutes. It is difficult enough to pop into the shops now. Extending the maximum stay will make it impossible. Families wishing to spend the day on the beach have traditionally parked free on the Esplanade. They will now have to pay a "premium" rate for a maximum stay of three hours. Does this encourage visitors to spend the day and their money in the town? It would seem that NCC are looking to plug their deficit for parking schemes operating in other towns, for example Gt Yarmouth, by milking the residents of Sheringham and discouraging visitors to the town. I would encourage everyone to ask how this will benefit them or the town and make their views known to their local County Councillor. Yours sincerely, David Brooks Sheringham Independent 406 December 20th 2014

Dear Margaret,

I am dismayed by the current proposals from Norfolk County Council around on street parking in Sheringham. There seems to have been little thought put into them which is disappointing given the importance of the issue to our town. The pay and display proposals down by the Esplanade will severely damage tourism on the West Promenade and affect the outlets down there. More importantly the residents’ parking appears to be almost every road in North Sheringham. This raises three questions : • Won't this remove 100s of car parking spaces for workers and tourists during the busy summer months - the lifeblood of our town • Unfairly, won't these mean that all of the residents I represent south of the main road will be inundated with people parking outside their houses because they can't park closer to the sea? • Why is it that none of the residents in the south deserve residents parking in some cases and what is the evidence that Brian Hannah and the County Council used to get to this decision? It is important that we have a proper and transparent debate about these proposals and not allow a money making scheme to be introduced by the County Council to Sheringham's cost. Yours sincerely, Richard Shepherd, Conservative Councillor, Sheringham South

Town council seeks to quash public debate on Parking Since the introduction of civil parking in the county in November 2011, the control, oversite and enforcement of parking in the town of Sheringham and Cromer has been carried out by the Borough council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk on behalf of Norfolk County Council.

In order to make the management of parking more efficient and allow the wardens to work more effectively Norfolk County Council are carrying out parking reviews in a number of towns where the pressure from residents, visitors and shoppers causes issues across the town.

Indeed in my time as a local councillor for Sheringham I have been approached many times with issues around parking in the town and this review is an opportunity to put residents and businesses first and better utilise the district run car parks.

Parking can be a real problem for our residents during the summer months.

We do need to welcome visitors to our town, but we have got to have sensible arrangements that encourage people to use car parks for longer stays and allow residents to park reasonably close to home. At the same time

HEADS AHEAD Ladies & Gents Hair Designers

we need to make sure that businesses and shops benefit from time limited spaces which encourage a good turnaround of customers.

As part of this review a survey will be sent to the entire town where parking is an issue asking residents about the issues they face in the busy times and what measures would be supported. The responses will help us develop a plan where the trouble spots are so that we could tailor parking management to help.

The measures that are for consideration are converting the existing 45 minute bays to Pay and Display whilst keeping the existing 45 mins free. This would allow visitors and shoppers to park as they do now free of charge but gives them the option of topping up and staying longer if they so wish. This can only help business in the shopping area. Pay and display is easier to enforce as the wardens only need to visit once rather than the three times

they do now so they spend more time in the rest of town. Parking on the esplanade could be managed in a similar way to encourage longer stay visitors to use the car parks, as after all on street pay and display is the norm in many successful seaside towns around the country.

To balance pay and display and encourage visitors to use the right area to park and give residents back their streets we could look at permit parking and create more kerb space by removing some of the unnecessary yellow lines.

The cost of this is a modest £40 a year per vehicle for Residents and £130 for businesses. This has worked successfully in Gt Yarmouth for a number of years and protected the quality of life for residents in high pressure areas.

We need to be able to look at this review as a way of supporting residents and businesses whilst making it clearer and easier for visitors to park more flexibly. The income generated will guarantee more efficient and better enforcement which, in the current climate must cover its costs. Be assured that this is not a money making scheme but is to allow more wardens to resolve issues you face and give you your streets back.

I am appalled that the Sheringham Town council has let itself be used by a few people with particular and personal interests to try and shelve this issue before local people have had the chance to have their say.

That is not the democracy I wish to be part of.

Brian Hannah, County Councillor for Sheringham. Common Lane, Sheringham.

New flood defence projects “fantastic news for Norfolk”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the announcement that plans are being developed for over 1,000 new flood defence projects around the country, worth a total of £2.3bn.

10 of the schemes announced are located in North Norfolk. The projects are still in the planning stages, and they would cost over £14m in total, protecting nearly 1200 homes across the District. Each of them will need to receive final approval for the business case before work could start. North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “This announcement is really encouraging, and fantastic news for Norfolk. These projects are still in the planning stages, and I will be monitoring them closely to ensure that good progress is made. It is particularly encouraging to see a significant proposal for the section of coast from Bacton gas terminal to Ostend included in today’s schemes, reinforcing the commitment I secured recently for urgent work to be done to explore ways to protect residents in Ostend. We need to make sure that work is done over the coming months to develop plans, and I will be holding a further meeting with ministers early next year so that all of the organisations involved can report back on the progress they have made.”

Sheringham WI

So much for a quiet Autumn after our busy summer! October saw us captivated by Stuart Offord’s Hostage Negotiations and brought home that the sleepy county of Norfolk suffers with many of the serious issues that we associate more often in large cities. As our Annual meeting is in November we very much celebrated our growing membership and the active and Leah Cutting handing over her fulfilling year we blanket to WI President Liz have had with a Withington. Leah knitted the tasty supper. It blanket after the WI came to also saw many visit the Youth Zone and teach knitting for an Aid Africa project members linking

with the Sheringham Youth Zone teaching 17 youngsters knitting and encouraging them to help knit blankets for our Aid Africa project. The youngsters also looked at the blankets and talked about what it must be like for children in Malawi who have nothing to sleep on unless they are lucky enough to have received a blanket from groups like ours.

since 1950 for our Christmas party at the Burlington. January 12th will see us back at Sheringham Community centre with an exciting year planned for 2015.

Anyone interested in joining us are welcome to visit and can contact Janice on 826801 or presidentsewi@ gmail.com or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

Members are also busy knitting for our Christmas tree at the Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival, which again is supporting Aid Africa. We will have also sung our way through the decades top number one hits

Successful Craft Fayre at Woodfields

Sheringham Woodfields School wishes to thank everyone who supported our 2014 Christmas Fayre. It was great to see so many people come and enjoy some time at the School. We were also so lucky to also secure a visit from Santa!

There was something for everyone in the run up to Christmas from smellies to handmade items. As has become customary, the freshly prepared bacon rolls sold out before the day had ended! This year saw the introduction of the ‘decorate a cupcake’ stall, provided by the catering team at NORSE. This proved popular with all visitors, young and old. NORSE kindly donated all takings to the school.

The Craft Fayre raised in excess of £1600 which will be put towards the extracurricular activities and events that take place in and around the school to support all pupils that attend the school. At present the school is working hard to redevelop its Sensory Room – a resource that is so vital for many of the pupils that attend the school. The success of the Craft Fayre means that the school is very close to reaching its target.

We are already busy planning a bigger and better Fayre for 2015. Hope to see you there.

Parallel Dance Studios in UK Street Dance Championship Finals

Having won the regional heats in the spring, on Sunday 23 November Parallel Dance Studios, based in Holt, travelled to Kent for the UK Street Dance Championship Finals.

Crayford & Abbs Sponsor Cromer Youth U8s Vikings and Pirates Our photo shows Cromer Youth U8s Vikings and Pirates showing off their new kit at Crayford and Abbs, Bodham.

Emma Graves from the Club comments ‘it was a really long day but the kids had a brilliant time and enjoyed the experience. There were 1800 people there and the competition was very tough.

Holt Juniors came sixth out of all Street Crews in the UK and our other Junior Reepham Team came sixth. Our Senior Advanced Team came sixth and also came second in under eight years solo. We also got through to the semi finals in Duets.

Left to right: Skyela Barden, Nicole Copeman, Samantha Graves, Ruby Temple, Ruby Stearman. All students of Sheringham Primary School and Holt Primary

If anyone is interested in joining Parallel Dance Studios please give Lucy Cook a call on 07747 796798.

The Club would like to thank Kevin Abbs of Crayford & Abbs who has generously sponsored the cost of the kit.

Cromer Youth have recently been named a "Chartered Community Club". In order to achieve this prestigious accolade status, a lot of criteria have to be fulfilled, including having teams for boys and girls as well as an adults team (Cromer Youth Old Boys) and that all coaches are Norfolk F.A qualified, level 1.

Kevin said ‘Crayford and Abbs are very pleased to support youth and sport in the community and are currently working with Lee Patterson – Royal Cromer Golf Club, Cromer Youth and the Holt Youth Project’. If you would like to join the Club as a player, volunteer or sponsor, please contact the Club Chairman through the Club website or their Facebook page.

Norman Lamb presents prize to winner of his Christmas card competition

At the start of the Autumn term, local MP Norman Lamb wrote to over 60 schools across North Norfolk inviting students to enter his 2014 Christmas Card design competition. He asked for the design to be based on 'Christmas in North Norfolk'. Norman received hundreds of entries, with a wide variety of designs. Earlier this month Norman Lamb visited Sidestrand Hall School to present a prize to the winning design. The talented winner, Jake Ellis, will have his Rudolph artwork featured on Norman Lamb’s Christmas cards for this year.

During his visit to Sidestrand Hall School, Norman Lamb revealed that he has produced 2000 cards this year and will be spending most of this weekend signing them! Jake's design will be going to Liberal Democrat Deputy

Prime Minister Nick Clegg and many others in Parliament.

Norman Lamb sends out a Christmas card every year to people who have helped him to do his work as local MP, including many of the organisations that work with his North Walsham team to resolve the problems that constituents raise with him every day. He also sends a card to local schools and care homes.

Jake receiving the prize – a framed version of his design – with his parents and Norman Lamb

Commenting afterwards, Norman Lamb said “We received some fantastic entries, and I’m really grateful to every child who entered.

Front and inside illustrations from Jake’s winning design

Picking the winning design was a real challenge, and I enjoyed looking through everyone’s drawings with my wife, Mary and the team in North Walsham. We all agreed that Jake’s design was both festive and funny! I send Christmas cards each year, as a way to say thank you to all those people who have helped me stand up for North Norfolk during the year. But I am incredibly grateful to all those who show their support for me throughout the year, and there are many more people to whom I would like to say thank you!”

£240m investment a “massive vote of confidence” in Norfolk renewables - Norman Lamb

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the recent announcement of a £240m investment by the UK Green Investment Bank in Scira Offshore Energy Limited, the owner of Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm.

The 317MW offshore wind farm off the coast of North Norfolk has been operating for two years, and generated over 1.1 TWh of net renewable electricity annually – enough to meet all of Norfolk’s domestic electricity demand.

The investment is part of the UK Green Investment Bank’s (GIB) strategy of strengthening the UK offshore wind sector by helping developers recycle their capital into new projects, and attracting new investors. By acquiring a 20% stake in Scira, the GIB will enable Sheringham

Shoal developers Statkraft and Statoil to recycle capital into other UK projects such as the Dudgeon offshore wind project planned off the coast of Wells-next-the-Sea.

Commenting on the news Norman Lamb said “The announcement of £240m UK investment in Scira is a massive vote of confidence in Norfolk’s renewable energy sector.

“Scira have made a real investment in building up local expertise and infrastructure here in Norfolk, and I am pleased to see that recognised. Sheringham Shoal has now directly created over 100 full-time jobs in Norfolk, as well as bringing valuable investment to other local businesses in towns like Wells. Britain has a real challenge ahead as we work to reduce our dependency on polluting fossil fuels and secure our future energy supply, and I know that Norfolk’s offshore wind generation industry has a crucial role to play in that, bringing jobs and growth to our community.”

Chair of Public Accounts Committee talks tax in Sheringham at Labour's Christmas Meal The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Margaret Hodge MP, joined North Norfolk Labour Party’s Christmas Dinner in Sheringham this month.

Mrs Hodge used her speech to explain further the work she does on the Public Accounts Committee and also the impact that corporations avoiding tax has on small businesses across the country.

Speaking on Small Business Saturday she cited the success of local independent book publishers SALT Publishing, but she expressed concerns that other small publishers had been less successful because of companies like Amazon not paying their fair share of tax.

She believed Britain had become a ‘tax haven’ under the current government and said that if the Labour Party clamped down on corporations like Starbucks and Google in a future government more money would be raised to pay for services. She said she was unconvinced that a "Google tax" unveiled in the Autumn Statement was enough.

Margaret Hodge was joined by Hywel Lloyd from the Labour Coast and Country group which is pushing for a ‘rural-proofed’ manifesto that works for both urban areas, rural areas, and coastal areas too.

Hywel spoke about the need for better transport links in North Norfolk 28

and across the county, and for policies that improve living standards in both city and rural areas too – particularly in the areas of education and health.

Denise Burke, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk and the chair of the local Labour Party, said “This year’s Christmas Party was even bigger than the last with a great turnout for our two key speakers. With the General Election just five months away we are now all geared up to hitting the doorsteps and spreading the word of the great work that both Margaret and Hywel are doing across the country.”

The Christmas Party at The Burlington in Sheringham was the last major social event for North Norfolk Labour Party before the General Election in May 2015. Find out how to join the Labour Party at www.norfolklabour.co.uk or call 01692 650816. Sheringham Independent 406 December 20th 2014

Chance to lobby the government on later trains for North Norfolk Transport campaigners are calling on North Norfolk residents to take part in the latest Department for Transport consultation surrounding the East Anglia rail network.

The North Norfolk Labour Party, which earlier this year launched a petition for later trains on the Bittern Line, are calling on those who wish to see later trains in the district to respond to a new consultation launched this week. The findings of the Department for Transport consultation will feed into drawing up the contract for East Anglia's rail network in 2016.

Campaigners met with Greater Anglia in September who claimed that midnight trains from Norwich to North Walsham, Cromer and

Sheringham could be possible - but only with a rethink from Network Rail which carries out maintenance on the lines overnight.

The Labour Party would also like to see the new hourly service at weekends continue beyond 2016, more capacity on trains at busier periods - particularly on Norwich City match days, and the inclusion of Worstead and Gunton in more train services.

Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "This consultation takes into account views on all of the train lines in the East of England and so we should not miss this opportunity to feed in our views on the Bittern Line too.

Hundreds of residents signed our petition earlier this year for later trains from Norwich to North Norfolk and this is a good opportunity to ensure it features on the specifications of a future contract.

The need for better public transport provision is regularly mentioned by residents on the doorsteps and we must continue to assert pressure on the government to make it happen."

The consultation will run until 16 March 2015 and can be found at

www.gov.uk/government/consultations/ east-anglia-rail-passenger-franchise

Ambulance response times better in October but targets still missed Ambulance response times in North Norfolk showed signs of improvement in October, but campaigners have warned that the figures have significantly varied since April, and that the service is still a long way off reaching important targets.

In October 2014 50pc of Red 1 category calls in North Norfolk were answered within the 8 minutes target - up from 42.42pc in September. 37.84pc of Red 2 category calls were answered within eight minutes slightly up from the 36.42pc in the previous month.

Act on Ambulances campaigners however are warning that the long-term picture still does not look as 'rosy' with the figures significantly missing the 75pc target and figures varying in the months between April and October.

There are also fears that there could be a reduced performance over winter - the busiest time of year for the NHS - with a number of concerning stories appearing in the press over the last month.

However the figures for the past six months have not been as rosy and there is a varying picture. There are already warnings about ambulance response times and A&E demand during the winter snap which could have an impact on figures in the coming months.

As we come to the end of the year I would like to pay particular tribute to the ambulance crews who have worked with great dedication and passion all year round.

We will continue to monitor the figures for North Norfolk, but we have our fingers crossed that the measures implemented will continue to have a positive impact."

Beachrunner John's Marathon Fundraising

North Norfolk Beachrunner John Battrick, 24, has been invited to take on the challenge of running in the London Marathon in April 2015, to raise money for the charity Breaks for Kids.

The charity, managed by The Youth Hostels Association, gives financial support to disadvantaged children, to enable them to take part in school trips and outdoor adventure breaks.

John, from Gresham and currently working for the YHA, said, “This charity means a lot to me. I provide the catering for large groups of disadvantaged kids at Patterdale YHA and I experience firsthand the

impact and difference these breaks make to young lives. Any support to help me reach my £1000 target will be greatly appreciated.”

John is no stranger to fundraising and challenges. At the age of 17, John and his father Peter climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, raising over £1000 for a local cancer charity and at university he continued to fundraise for various charities.

To support John and help change the lives of young people, please visit John’s fundraising page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ john.battrick
