Jazz at The Hub
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
NEW COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE!
The monthly jazz programme on Sunday evenings at The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre has been extremely successful and will be ushered into the New Year when local trombone maestro Dave Amis takes his quintet, Cyan Traces, to the venue on 25 January.
Dave is truly a local musician and still lives in Cromer. His father ran a well known band in the area, Dave sang in the parish choir, learnt piano and began playing trombone with the Cromer and Sheringham Town Band. As a child the family home was awash with the sounds of jazz (played on 78s) and the AFN Frankfurt and Voice of America Jazz Hour were regular ‘wireless’ programmes. In addition, the area was still heavily populated by American service men and they had an influence on the indigenous music culture.

Jazz at The Hub Continued from front cover...
With the seeds of his music career firmly sown, Dave’s yearning for jazz took him to London when he was sixteen. It was in the metropolis, where he met like minded musicians and attended music college, that his development continued and took him into a career in music.
Cyan Traces was formed in 2009 and the personnel have remained constant, all highly regarded amongst the most eminent players of all styles in the Anglia region. Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) Alex Best (drums/percussion), Holly Graham (vocalist) and Dave (trombone) are always in demand, whether it be symphony orchestras, big bands, theatre shows or teaching. The common denominator is a love of and commitment to playing jazz that is enjoyable and challenging and accessible for people to listen to.

CRANACHAN
A very happy New year from all of us at The Grove!
We are taking the opportunity of the early season to get some renovations underway; always interesting when a property is over 150 years old in places. The main kitchen once had an ‘emergency’ window fitted after our old friend Terry Bane fell through a single-skin brick wall during a tea-break, and removing paper from lathe-and-plaster walls is often done with heart in mouth! However no mishaps yet and we will be back open for Burns’ Night on 23rd January.
Spaces are going fast so please call quickly on 01263512412 to book your table! We look forward to seeing you all during 2015 when we are hoping to continue providing high-quality Norfolk food for you to enjoy.
Chicago
(a traditional Burns’ Night dessert)
Decorate each dessert with a sprinkling of the remaining 1 tbsp toasted oatmeal and the reserved raspberries.
Ingredients Serves 4 • 5 tbsp porridge oats • 300 ml whipping or double cream • 2 tbsp clear honey • 2 tbsp whisky • 400 g raspberries
Method Preheat the grill to high. Line the rack in the grill pan with foil and spread the oatmeal over the foil. Toast under the grill for about 3 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the oatmeal is golden.
Set aside to cool for about 15 minutes.
Put the cream in a bowl and whip until thick. Stir in the honey and whisky, then fold in 4 tbsp of the toasted oatmeal.
Reserve a few raspberries for the decoration. Layer the remaining raspberries with the cream mixture in 4 glass serving dishes, starting with raspberries and ending with a layer of the cream mixture.
Principal singers and dancers went above and beyond in true Gresham’s style to give the production its extra razzle dazzle and the superb chorus dealt with the challenging timings of the show.
The audience came away buzzing from the show which was a real reflection of some of the amazing talent amongst the pupils. In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

The Auden Theatre in Holt took on the atmosphere of a 1920s American speakeasy, staging a story of amoral characters singing and dancing their way through a dark comedy of jealousy, crime and showbiz in Gresham’s Senior School’s production of Chicago in December.
In the words of the Master of Ceremonies, Chicago, is a “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery.” From these opening lines, the audience were really drawn into the seedy world of murder with a stunningly underscore of jazz. The cast of eighty provided audiences with four sell-out nights of superb entertainment, in what was a demanding and Kitty Combe (Holt) complex school musical. The set was laid out in cabaret style with an art deco backdrop which transported the audience back to the roaring twentys.

PC Simple - On the Move
Nelly qualifies for Nationals
When Clive and Berni Sanham opened their first computer shop in Co-operative Street they never imagined how busy it would become in three short years. Since opening, the business has gone from strength to strength and now employs three full-time staff. Shortly after opening, Jon Hayman started as an apprentice (at Level 3) and rapidly developed a good rapport with customers, embracing PCSimple’s policy of delivering exceptional customer service. Jon passed his apprenticeship with flying colours and is now an important part member of the businessteam.
As more customers heard about the shop via wordof-mouth, Clive soon found that he needed someone to help with administration. Fortunately, his daughter Nikki, who had recently graduated with an Occupational Therapy Degree from the UEA, stepped in to help out and is now an essential part of the business. As the work increased it was again apparent that more staff were required and Scott Raddon, who had been volunteering while at school, signed on as a level two apprentice; this is ongoing and PCSimple is looking forward to keeping him as a full-timer if he passes.
With the amount of business being conducted, and increased staffing, it soon became apparent that there was hardly any room left for customers and Clive started looking for alternative premises within his budget. Finally, a suitable venue was found. PCSimple will soon be moving to its new site at 44E Station Road. Clive and all the staff are looking forward to having ‘space to breathe’. Clive is particularly happy to get his own work area at last and customers will be appreciative of the space as well.
Nelly Porter from Holt, a Year 8 pupil from Gresham’s Prep School, recently competed at the 2015 Norfolk Cross Country Championships held in Norwich, where the young athlete won bronze and qualified for the National Championships next year.
The race was 2.8 kilometres and Nelly completed it in 9 minutes 39 seconds in the Under 13 girls’ category. On the same day, Nelly also competed as part of the City of Norwich Athletic Club team which won gold with her team mates fighting hard for first, second and third place.
Nelly Porter with her medals As a result, Nelly and her team were selected to take part on Saturday 13 December against the South East of England in Oxford, where she was placed equal 19th in a time of 11:34 over 3000 metres. She now goes through to the Nationals to be held in Brighton in January.
THE NEW SHERINGHAM SINGERS
presented a sell-out concert on 7 December to an enthusiastic audience which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A raffle was held and raised £170 for the Norwich Shelter. The Singers will be performing a concert on Sunday 19 April at the Lighthouse Church in Sheringham and hope to see you there.

Norfolk Churches from the Air
Mike Page and Pauline Young A new book from Poppyland Publishing
Norfolk Churches from the Air provides a new perspective on the county’s famous churches. Stand anywhere in Norfolk and you’re likely to see four or five towers - take to the air and look down to see many more from a very different angle. Mike’s photos feature regularly in the local press and this new title makes a fascinating addition to the range of books he has already produced.
Mike has been flying and taking photographs for over 40 years. The combination of these skills enables him to make the most of the opportunities when weather and in particular light are right for the cameraman. His collection of aerial photographs now extends to over a 100,000 images and he is confident
there will be more books to come. For Poppyland Publishing, he has already made valuable contributions to Maritime Norfolk Part 2 and to the new history of Wells next the Sea, where pictures from above very much add to the story being told.
Pauline Young’s text does not seek to cover exhaustively the history of each building but provokes interest through some facts and figures and guides us to other information sources. The book notes the intention of the church builders to reach for the heavens, whilst providing markers to those journeying across the county. The towers and the bells called the faithful together - little could those congregations have imagined looking down
Trunch on their churches from the air and seeing a whole new vision of their place of worship.
The book is now in stock in East Anglian bookshops and also available direct from www.poppyland.co.uk. It can also be ordered through good bookshops throughout the UK.

Green Party General election candidate
Mike Macartney-Filgate has been selected as the Green Party's candidate for the North Norfolk Parliamentary Constituency for the General Election next May.
A recently retired Norfolk social worker and long-time resident of Catfield, in the constituency, he has been a parish councillor and has stood for the Green Party in the 1987 General Election and the 1989 European elections, in which he came third and retained his deposit.
Married to Anne, a teacher, he has two adult children, Samuel, a teacher and Nell (Eleanor), a clinical psychologist, both born, raised and
educated in Norfolk. His interests, outside of green politics, are organic gardening, DIY, sailing and cycling.
Welcoming his selection at a recent meeting of the North Norfolk Green Party, Mike said "I am delighted to offer the Green message of hope for our County, our countryside and our people. Faith in people to act locally and to live with global awareness has never been more vital. We need to share, listen and act to preserve our local health services, schools for our children, precious natural sites and pecies/ landscape, while not forgetting the wider world and all its peoples. Let's vote FOR what we share as people and with the world around us."
Medically supervised weight loss – lose inches but preserve muscle mass and skin elasticity
Obesity is a major worldwide issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems. Unfortunately some of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Rapid weight loss achieved by crash diets can be temporary and result also in muscle loss and saggy skin.
We have devised a weight loss program in conjunction with the Pronokal system which is a very effective physiological form of treatment for achieving weight loss. It is based on reduction of carbohydrates and fats and utilising protein sources. We see weight loss but preservation of muscle mass and skin tone. We also use external ultrasound to melt difficult to reach areas of fat under the skin. The treatment plan includes a customised dietary program. It is conducted under medical supervision and complemented by a multidisciplinary team of professionals
(registered dieticians, psychological adviser and personal trainer).
Typically 80% of target weight is achieved in the first stage of the treatment programme – 7 to 10kg weight loss in a month is not unusual. We also use ultrasound cavitation and radio frequency machine to mobilise fat cells from diet and exercise resistant body areas to achieve weight reduction. We recommend a minimum of six sessions, once every 2-3 weeks. Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FPCert BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic

Make a New Years’ Resolution to support the nook appeal
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is calling upon the people of Norfolk to make an extra special New Years’ resolution for 2015 to support the nook appeal.
The nook appeal was launched on 25 November in the presence of the charity’s Royal Patron, The Duchess of Cambridge, outlining the vision for a new purpose-built children’s hospice which will cost £10m to build and equip. The new hospice will replace the current facility in Quidenham which is extremely restricted in its facilities and development.
There are many ways in which you can make New Years’ resolutions which not only benefit you as an individual, but also the many life-threatened children, young people and their families who will benefit from your fundraising efforts.
Getting healthy is always top of the list, and there’s plenty of ways to do it and raise vital funds. You could get sponsored to go on a diet, give up smoking or drinking alcohol and you could also donate the money you save to the appeal too.
As well as abstaining, you could get active by taking part in a challenge to improve your fitness and there’s plenty to choose from: • Great East Anglia Run – King’s Lynn, 3 May
• EACH Ride for Life – Thetford Forest, 14 June
• London to Paris Bike Ride, 22 - 25 July
• Hold a coffee morning in aid of the nook appeal.
• Have a clear out at home and hold a car boot sale and donate the proceeds to the nook appeal.
• Organise a dress down day where you work and donate the proceeds to the nook appeal.
Not all resolutions need to have a fundraising element however – you could pledge to donate your time as a volunteer, learn a new skill or help raise awareness of the cause.
• Trek Fest The Peaks, 5 – 6 September (Global Adventure Challenges)
• City of Norwich Half Marathon 22 November
• Norwich Santa Run – Dec 2015
EACH are hosting three very special events this year with more planned as the year progresses. The EACH Colour Dash which will bring a colour explosion to the county as participants are showered with coloured powdered paint as they complete a 5km run. The nook appeal skydive will see participants experiencing free fall from 12,000ft reaching speeds of 120 mph while the nook 25/50/100 Bike Ride on September 6th will see cyclists getting in the saddle for the cause.
If you fancy something a little less active then why not commit to doing one of the following: • Have a collection pot at home and collect up your loose change for the nook appeal.
WHITE HORSE OVERSTRAND CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY WITH OUR SPECIAL MENU Saturday 14th February
Are you a technophobe for example and want to join the digital revolution? Then learn how to go online and use your new skills to promote the nook appeal in blogs, on Facebook and Twitter.
And if these options are all too much – make a simple resolution to make a donation to the nook foundation appeal and donate £10 in different ways including: • Text to donate - Text NOOK10 + £10 to 70070
• Just giving page justgiving.com/thenookappeal
• Send a cheque to - East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), Suite 5, The Old Dairy, Elm Farm Business Park, Norwich Common, Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18 0SW.

North Norfolk Young Carers Christmas Dinner CRACKERS AND CHEQUES
The Rotary Club of North Norfolk treated twenty five young carers to a traditional Christmas dinner at the Feathers Hotel in Holt on 10 December.
The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the young carers and the Rotarians, many of whom attended with their partners. The Rotary club has helped support this very worthwhile charity for several years and during that time have raised some £30,000. On the night Alastair Mayes, President of the Rotary Club presented Julie Alford, (on behalf of the Young Carers) with a further cheque for £2,500.
Wear a jumper for charity
Staff and pupils at Gresham’s Nursery and Pre-Prep School in Holt celebrated the last day of the Christmas term by joining in with a national campaign to wear a Christmas jumper for a day.
The ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ which took place on 12 December was launched by Save the Children and encouraged people to wear a jumper for a day and make a £1 donation for doing so. Both children and staff wore all manner of festive jumpers to support the campaign and were delighted to raise £167.35 in the process.
Janette Davidson, Headmistress said “We were delighted to host this event for Save the Children, as well as raising money, everyone had great fun dressing up.”

Thanks
On behalf of myself and my family we would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of sympathy and support, either in person or in the many condolence cards we received after the death of my husband John William (Jack Joyful) West on 31 October 2014.
It has been a great help to us to receive so many kind words from so many people.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the carers and people involved in looking after Jack when he came out of hospital. They all did a tremendous job and were so gentle, kind and helpful in our hour of need.

Dear Margaret,
We own a very successful and popular business providing self- catering holiday accommodation in Sheringham, and have done so for several years. We are in full support of Sheringham Town Council in rejecting all the scheme parking proposals. Our properties are all within easy walking distance of the town and beach, and we don’t have our own designated parking, so our guests are reliant on ‘street’ parking. Whilst guests who haven’t visited the town before will ask on booking how easy it is to park- we can honestly tell them that we have never had a problem – and we visit and stay in our cottages regularly so we can see the position from the residents’ point of view as well. We have never received any negative feedback regarding parking from our guests at the end of their holiday.
Yes of course the town (and therefore parking ) is busy at certain times, but the parking availability ebbs and flows during the day, even taking account of workers in local shops and businesses (they have to park somewhere). We have many regular guests who are very loyal to both us and Sheringham - would they continue to be if the resident permits and pay and display schemes were brought in? We don’t think so.
We are of the opinion that both aspects of the proposals (permits and pay and display) are totally unnecessary and the rationale behind them appears to be to try to address problems that don’t exist - (but justify raising revenue ) and would be detrimental to the wonderful and unique experience that Sheringham currently offers to visitors and tourists. Regards,
Thank you everyone involved so much.

Dear Margaret,
Forgive me if, as a new resident of Sheringham, I raise an issue which I believe has been brought to attention before. My concern focuses on the appearance, use and structural integrity of a series of buildings at the corner of Holway Road and Cromer Road trading under the title of “Coastal MOT Centre”. I am told the (Town/District) Council has addressed the problem hitherto and taken action with limited success. Locals and visitors alike entering and leaving the town by the main roundabout are faced with the Coastal MOT Centre garage and attached premises occupying a large site badly in need of renovation. In short it is an eyesore and spoils the image of the town. Furthermore the garage side entrance and about 30 metres of Holway Road look like a wrecker’s yard. Parts of the garage appear to be about to fall down and I suspect they would not pass a formal building inspection. Some of the cars parked at the side of the garage occasionally infringe the pavement and have not moved in the 6 months I have been here. In fact one of them displays a tax disc dating from the year 2007. Further at the side of the premises in Holway Rd, winter has revealed even more abandoned vehicles and garden rubbish. Here I should declare my personal interest. The few vehicles that move daily from inside the garage premises (about 6) are then parked on Norfolk Rd near my apartment. This area is a popular place to park and these Coastal cars occupy precious car parking slots throughout the day thus denying them to the public. I have spoken with the garage owner who is a charming man. Further he acceded to my request that he move one of his vehicles that had stood outside my apartment for over 2 week. So he is well aware of the difficulties he causes including forcing pedestrians and pram pushers off the pavement when customers leave their vehicles waiting to enter or leave the garage. Some readers may consider all this to be trivial. However apart from the aesthetic aspects, with winter weather in the offing, the Coastal buildings appear vulnerable, to the elements, liable to suffer damage and present a danger to the public. Moreover I believe the site is “out of place” in its present location and its long term future should be open to examination. Jack Broughton, Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
In response to County Councillor Brian Hannah's recent letter "let's park sensibly"
concerning parking proposals in Sheringham, I am unclear as to his view of democracy. As far as I was aware democracy is all about giving people the choice over matters that concern them directly. However, in order that they are able to make informed decisions, they need to be made aware of the surrounding facts and advised of the potential outcomes of their decision.
At first glance the NCC proposals for permit and on-street pay and display parking may seem simple in the extreme, however when carefully thought about an ill informed decision could have consequences for the whole of the town, which on the face of it, may not be immediately apparent. There have been a number of letters printed over the past weeks which detail the wider consequences of the proposals so I will not repeat them here.
The Sheringham Parking Action Group (SPAG) is a grouping of people and representatives of local bodies that have the wider interests of the whole town at heart. Their campaign is to ensure that residents are made aware of the full facts and potential outcomes, of the parking proposals currently being discussed before the NCC questionnaire is issued. The current on-line and hard copy petition against the pay and display only part of NCC's proposals was started to gauge an initial response to this part of the proposals. Hopefully once residents are in full possession of the facts, democracy will prevail and the town's residents will provide an informed response to NCC's questionnaire who, will in turn listen to and act on, their decision. This is what I believe to be democracy. Bob Smith Sheringham

An audience was treated with a showing at Weybourne Village Hall of the DVD "Weybourne Through the Four Seasons 2010-2011" presented by Weybourne History Group.
This was enthusiastically received and portrayed the fauna, flora and landscape of the area, as well as the events and activities of the parish. Ann Abbott and Claire Massingham who were responsible for the production display the DVD which is a historic record of these times for future generations as well as being entertaining. Paternalism –v- Empowerment
www. jweddingcars.co.uk
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Many decades ago the section of the court system that then dealt with those who were mentally incapable was the Chancery Division of the High Court which was said to deal with ‘wills, wives and wrecks’. In other words, probate matters (as now), matrimonial issues (now dealt with by their own court called The Family Court), and shipping matters. The ‘wrecks’ were maritime rather than human. Cases relating to those without mental capacity were headed ‘In Lunacy’. That was an age of paternalism; and not always very benign.
Gradually the law in relation to those lacking mental capacity entered a world of kinder paternalism where others knew best and the mentally incapable were treated almost as children.
The landscape has yet again changed and we are now in a culture where those lacking mental capacity are to be ‘empowered’

Weather predictions from Ned Nimbus
2014 was notable for its stormy and wet start followed by a fine summer other than August, a warm Autumn, giving way to more normal conditions in December. Overall, nothing out of ordinary for our changeable climate when no two years are the same.
It won't be long after Christmas that our weather will turn colder and that will set a pattern for January with high pressure never too far away but temperatures below average (5c) for much of the month - only towards the end of the month will we see a temporary rise.
February will see a mix of weather and temperatures with the chance of a warm spell mid month before temperatures return to average (7c) or below.
March will be generally unsettled with a notable colder spell 14th to 20th and thereafter, as the sun is getting stronger, any days with a little more warmth will set off heavy showers.
In summary a mixed three months with temperatures below normal for a greater amount of the time. Ned Nimbus 21 December 2014

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although we closed for re-homing over the Christmas break to allow our fosterers (who are all volunteers) an opportunity to spend some time with their families, we were very busy just before and also after the holiday period. Several of the cats and kittens were re-homed before Christmas. Others went to their new homes after the Christmas break because their new families were having visitors and it would not be the ideal time to introduce a new cat or kitten to their new home. This has continued into the New Year with several more cats and kittens being either re-homed or reserved.
One of our long term residents, namely Dash, is one of the cats re-homed since the beginning of the year. This dear little girl, one of the many black cats we have recently found new homes for, was very stressed when she came into care and took some time to settle and gain confidence. Part of the problem had been living in a home with other cats so we knew that she needed to be the only cat in the household. Although other people had been to see her she had not let them see what a delightful girl she was. However, when her new family came she had responded positively to their attentions and before too long was happy to sit on the gentleman’s lap in her pen. Dash had obviously made up her mind that this was her family and is now very happy in her new home.
The cats and kittens that remain in care range in age from 1 month old to 15 years. They include some of our longer term residents who will need homes with experienced cat people, plus the kittens, most of which are either black or white. Working with cats you tend not to worry about what colour it is but what is its temperament and character. However, whatever their colour or temperament we do love them all, even the naughty ones.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

You may have been hearing in the news in December concerning the NHS Care Quality Commission (CQC) and their inspections of GP practices in England. The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England and has a statutory duty to visit all NHS GP practices and primary care providers. CQC has categorised practices into one of six priority bands for inspection, with Band 1 representing higher priority and Band 6 the lowest. These bands have been identified in the form of risk or elevated risk of poor care, with Band 1 at very high risk and Band 6 lowest. Bandings are based on evidence which has been available publicly from national datasets for NHS GP practices which relate to important areas of care known as the Intelligent Monitoring Report (IMR).
The Sheringham Medical Practice IMR is readily available on the CQC website www.cqc.org.uk which clearly shows that the high quality of care within the Practice means it is least likely to need any urgent inspection from the CQC. The PPG is very proud that the practice has attained Band 6, which reflects the high standard of care given. But there is no room for complacency and the staff at the practice is always willing to listen to your comments and suggestions on how improvements could be made.
If you are registered at the practice would like to join our PPG then please complete our short form available at the practice, ring the surgery for a form to be sent to you or email us on sheringhamppg@nhs.net

St Peter's Church to close for six weeks In 2012 Builders completed Stage 1 of repair works to the fabric of St Peter's. This involved stripping plaster off the walls on the east and west end of the building which exposed damp brickwork. There were also repairs necessary to outside stonework. The exposed walls which had caused the plaster to peel has, we believe now, dried out so it is appropriate to now seal cleaned off bricks with lime wash and while the church is closed and scaffolding in place we will take the opportunity to paint the remainder of the church with the same colour. Works started in early January. The church is now in effect a building site so it must remain closed until mid February. Services and events will still take place but in the adjacent church hall in the same format as before works commenced. The church office will remain open as usual.
Both stage 1 and 2 have been funded by a generous legacy.
We are sorry if this causes inconvenience to anyone but we are maintaining the church for the benefit of generations to come.
David Rivett, Churchwarden

Cantamus Choir
Oh, we have had our fill of “Figgy Duff”. The ‘Three Kings’ have been sent back to their Persian Lands, ‘The Lamb’ is back in the box and “Frosty The Snowman” has gone away (well almost). So if like me, your have that New Year feeling of wanting to lose a few pounds and exercise, then come join the Cantamus regime - exercise those vocal chords and burn the calories in song and laughter.
Happily 2015 is taking Cantamus on a choral trip through English music from madrigals to Victorian part songs to a cappella – such wonderful delights as ‘Seal Lullaby’ , the ethereal 'Sure on this Shining Night' and rousing anthems e.g. “Zadok The Priest” and “I was Glad”, sung at the wedding of Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.
If you love singing come to a Thursday night rehearsal and try us out. Here are some reasons why members joined us… and stayed:
“Only came to sing the Messiah; 4 years later I am still here!” “Singing is great for my well-being – its fantastic relaxation. The laughter is an added bonus.” “I don’t read music, but since everyone helps each other I quickly felt part of the choir. I love it!”
Our members come from Sheringham to Stalham, Mundesley to Aylsham. So if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible. No auditions are required. With mixed ability singers, you’ll be surprised how soon you become part of the team.
For more information please contact David on 07785 782498. We look forward to singing and laughing with you - Thursday 7.30pm in Southrepps Church.

Launch Day for Record Breaking Ride
The National 3 Peaks Challenge is a considerable feat involving climbing the three highest mountains in the UK – Mount Snowdon (Wales), Scafell Pike (England) and Ben Nevis (Scotland).

Good friends Charles Graham-Wood and Jack Greenwood have set their sights on achieving just this … only instead of driving between the mountains, they’ll be cycling! They have named the trip ‘Pedal the Peaks’ and it will be a journey of around 470 miles on the bikes and more than three vertical kilometres over 24 miles on foot - and they have got just four days to do it in.
It’s all in the name of charity and they will be raising as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK as well as local charities including the Holt and Communities First Responders. On 13 April they will start with climbing Mount Snowdon and then it is about 210 miles to Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Then it is back on the road for roughly 260 miles to the bottom of Ben Nevis. With a bit of luck (and possibly some sleepless nights!) they’ll be at the summit of Ben Nevis by sunset on the fourth day. This will make them the youngest duo to complete the challenge in such a short time.
They have been in training for the last couple of months, gained support from local businesses and will be officially launching the event on Saturday 17 January at Budgens of Holt.
