£100,000 appeal to restore 103 year old engine achieved The M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has successfully raised £100,000 for the overhaul of the NNR’s oldest working steam locomotive. The appeal was launched in September 2013 to raise funds to overhaul Great Eastern Railway (GER) ‘Y14’ Class locomotive (LNER class ‘J15’), which is owned by the M&GN Joint Railway Society and has required a heavy general overhaul to ensure it can return to steam and start hauling trains once again.

Society Chairman Neil Sharpe who spearheaded the appeal said “The support for the appeal has been fantastic. Raising the six figure sum has been a hard task indeed, but the response by both our membership and by supporters of our plucky little engine has been phenomenal. I would like to put on record my most grateful thanks to everyone who has done their bit to help this fantastic engine steam once again.”

£100,000 appeal to restore 103 year old engine achieved

Continued from front cover... The extensive works have included a full boiler and mechanical overhaul. The total cost of the overhaul will exceed £350,000. The additional cost of the overhaul has been met by the support of over 3000 Society members, by the members of the engine’s supporting club and by the revenue generated by the Society’s other steam and diesel locomotives that haul trains on the North Norfolk Railway.

Society steam locomotive engineer Keith Ashford has led the project and said "The overhaul that we have undertaken is believed to be the most comprehensive that the engine has had since she was first built in 1912. It has certainly been the most technically challenging overhaul the Society has managed too. Brand new components have had to be made to replace worn originals, which involves working to very tight tolerances and high engineering standards. We are firm believers in 'doing the job properly' so whilst it has taken a little longer than planned, the quality of the work will really pay dividends in reliability in the long run"

The Great Eastern Railway ‘Y14’ class were built in batches between 1883 and 1913. They were the most numerous GER class and hold the illustrious title of the fastest steam

pioneers of the North Norfolk Railway.

locomotive to ever be built. In 1891 a ‘Y14’ class engine was built in the record time of 9 hours 47 minutes and went onto run for 36,000 miles before returning to Stratford works in north London for final painting.

It is also intended (subject to the completion of the overhaul and testing) for the locomotive to appear in the North Norfolk Railway’s Spring Steam Gala on 6th, 7th & 8th March 2015, where it will work alongside guest visitor, ‘D49’ class locomotive Morayshire and other resident NNR locomotives. It will then be used to haul trains throughout the year between Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt.

The Society’s ‘Y14’ is now the only one left of its type. It has unique historical pedigree for the North Norfolk Railway as it used to run on the line before closure under the Beeching axe in 1964. During its working life it was based at Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Norwich, before being withdrawn for scrap in 1962, which is when it was saved by the early INVITES LOCAL RESIDENTS

The overhaul of the engine, which is taking place at a the workshops of Ian Riley & Sons in Bury, Lancashire is now very close to completion and final testing will take place in late January and early February. Following completion of all works including final painting into original GER fully lined ultramarine blue, the engine will return to the North Norfolk Railway where a ceremonious launch day will be held, with free travel for supporters of the appeal and members of the M&GN Joint Railway Society.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon January is proving to be a busy time for us all at the White Horse with a number of private parties using the Barn Restaurant for special occasions and celebrations. Our 2 for 1 lunchtime offer every weekday will continue into February with a choice of tasty lunchtime dishes ideal for the colder weather.

Don’t forget to book your table for Valentine’s Day which this year is a Saturday. Our romantic 6 Course dinner served in the restaurant at just £35 per person is already booking so to be sure of getting a table I suggest you book as soon as possible. The Norfolk Jazz Quartet will be performing in the bar from 8.30pm so if you wish you can join the regulars in the bar and enjoy a musical end to your evening. Mothers’ Day is not far off and we will be announcing our menu for that very special day very soon but as ever my advice is to book early and remember that our children’s menu will be available so as much as it a special day for Mum the whole

family can enjoy a meal out. This month’s recipe is from our Second Chef Mark Young, which I hope you will enjoy making.

MARK YOUNG’S RECIPE FOR BANANA AND WALNUT BREAD INGREDIENTS 3 1/2 Cups of Plain Sifted Flour, 2 Teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda 1/2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon, 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt, 4 Large Eggs 2 1/2 Cups opf Sugar, 1 Cup of Vegetable Oil, 3 Cups of Mashed Bananas 1/4 Cup of Creme Fraiche, 1 1/2 Cups of Walnuts

METHOD Beat together the Eggs and Sugar, add the Oil, Bananas and Creme Fraiche. Fold in the sifted Flour, Bicarbonate Soda, Cinnamon and Salt.

An Evening of Music

February sees the start of the next series of concerts set up to provide a showcase and performance opportunity for ex-pupils from the Purcell School, as well as a way of raising much needed funds for both FALCON and St Andrew's Church Development Fund.

Come and enjoy an evening of music at St Andrew’s Church, Holt on 7 February at 6.30pm. This concert features Dorin Tuca playing violin and Daria Bitsiuk playing piano. Both musicians have won national and international awards and have performed with highly regarded orchestras and artists. No booking is necessary so do come along and join the growing number of people who have been delighted by the warm welcome, the quality of the music and the enthusiasm of the musicians. St Andrew’s Church provides a welcoming venue, with wine and soft drinks available before the concert and during the interval.

Donations are requested to support FALCON (www.Falcon-norfolk.org.uk) and the St Andrew’s Church Development Fund.

North Norfolk Chamber Opera

The North Norfolk Chamber Opera (NNCO) is an amateur performing group set up some 25 years ago by our President, Janet Bryant-Heron to perform works seldom, if ever, seen in North Norfolk.

Our venues have included Sheringham Little Theatre, Kelling Barn, The Maddermarket Theatre and for many years now the Auden Theatre, Holt. NNCO have put on an opera annually in the spring, performing such works as ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘Don Giovann’i by Mozart, and many operettas and one act operas. Our concerts in the autumn have been both serious and light-hearted including ‘The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Mozart’ and ‘Opera and Chips’ performed in a barn at a pub!

Our next production will be an English translation of ‘The Elixir of Love’ (L’Elisir d’Amore) by Gaetano Donizetti, nightly on 16th – 18th April 2015 at the Auden Theatre – a fun ‘Rom-Com’ in which a lovelorn young man takes an Elixir (actually only wine but he doesn’t know that!) in order to try and win his love.

We are a very small amateur group and new members are always welcome; non-performing as well as performing. Rehearsals are underway but there is still time to join us for the forthcoming production, in particular tenors and basses. Rehearsals take place in the Loades Hall, Holt on Monday evenings at 7:30pm.

COASTAL JAZZ

The popularity of the Norfolk Jazz Quartet continues to grow and the band has three dates on the North Norfolk Coast in February.

The first date will be Monday 2 February for Mundesley Rhythm Club at The Ship Inn. The club has been supporting local musicians and live music for many years and does not charge for admission. If, however, you buy a raffle ticket it helps the club to meet its costs. The music starts at 8pm.

On Saturday 14 February the quartet moves north along the coast to Overstrand for a St. Valentines event at The White Horse. The band will play in the bar and admission will, once again, be free but if you would like a romantic six course dinner in the restaurant (£35) it is essential to book. Tel: 01263 579237. The band will start playing at 8.30pm.

On Sunday 15 February the Quartet heads for The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre where a capacity audience is expected from amongst the jazz enthusiasts of North Norfolk’s premier seaside town. Tickets are £8 and are available from the box office in person between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Saturday (Tel: 01263 822347) or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

The Quartet plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book and really swings. The musicians also make-up two thirds of the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band, the county’s ‘coolest’ traditional jazz ensemble and will continue to play regularly at the Goat Inn, Skeyton, throughout 2015. This is another venue where admission is free and you can just drop in for a drink but if you want to be sure of a table for lunch it is always wise to book. Tel: 01692 538600. The next gig will be Sunday 1 February at 1.30pm.

Please contact Maggi Warren, Musical Director/Acting Chair on 01263 761482 or see our web site www.northnorfolkchamberopera.co.uk

Calling all musicians!

The new year marks the start of a new music group in North Norfolk. In contrast to existing orchestras in the area, the Sheringham Sinfonia will be a monthly repertoire orchestra. It will meet on Friday mornings, starting on 30 January. It will be for instrumentalists who would like just to 'turn up and play' with no commitment to practice for concerts. Sarah Coleman, the Sinfonia's conductor and organiser, stresses that there will be a broad spectrum of music to suit all tastes, ranging from baroque to Britten, from Mozart to modernism.

Anyone of a Grade 6 standard or above who is interested in being part of this new venture is requested to phone either Sarah Coleman on 01263 821514 or Su Pointer on 07900 003456, or email sarah.e.chadwick@btinternet.com or su5@btinternet.com.

Songbird Survival Christmas Raffle

The volunteers of Songbird Survival had a very special evening at The Lighthouse Inn in Walcott on 12 December.

We had the pleasure of Keith Skipper drawing the tickets in the raffle, which made the evening very entertaining. The Chairman, Robert Middleditch, founder member Mrs MacPherson and Georgina, Office Manager, also attended. I must take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses for the wonderful raffle prizes that they donated. The total sum raised was £1607. It is nice to know that local people can be so generous, especially local residents who have given items for table top sales that we hold throughout the year. We must also thank Steve at The Lighthouse Inn, Walcott for all his help and support. Steve does so much work to help local charities, not only us but many more besides.

Thank you to everyone who comes to our sales and gives us their support. Looking forward to seeing you all again this year. Eddie Bullimore In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

DISTRIBUTOR WANTED

On Thursday 15 January at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, ChairFOR THE man Tony O’Shea welcomed 23 members and one guest. Our speaker, Matthew Smith, joined us after lunch and told us enthusiastically about SHERINGHAM INDEPENDENT the work of the Sheringham Woodfields School for children with complex CALL MARGARET ON educational needs. Matthew is the Business Manager and he deals with the administration of the school as a business, covering such aspects as maintenance, catering, IT and efficiency - the school has a staff of 104, and a budget of £2m/a. The School is one of 11 in Norfolk and has 99 pupils between the ages of 3 and 19, each receiving a tailored curriculum. The extraordinary range of complex needs requires facilities ranging from those for deaf, blind and immobile children, up to the provision of teaching A level maths, chemistry and physics. The school has 14 classrooms but shares some specialist teaching facilities with nearby Sheringham High School and Sheringham Primary School. The school is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including a hydrotherapy pool and a sensory room. Educational progress is monitored following Ofsted guidelines that cover both scholastic ability and interaction with others in everyday life situations. In proposing a vote of thanks, Malcolm Bell congratulated the speaker on both the subject of his talk and his excellent presentation.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS On behalf of the members of The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club may I wish you all a belated Happy New Year.

UPPER SHERINGHAM The Church of All Saints

Volunteer drivers with their own cars to take patients to medical appointments

One of the tasks we set ourselves before Christmas is to put together some Christmas Hampers for less well-off families in our local community. We do this by asking local Supermarkets and businesses if they would kindly donate some goodies or vouchers so that we can purchase the required items to put in the hampers. Last year we received donations from Morrison’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Kinnerton Confectionery for which we thank them. Last December we also did a ‘Pub Dash’ where club members went round the local public houses in Sheringham & Cromer and we collected in excess of £250 which was used to buy items specifically for the hampers. We would like to give a huge thanks to all those people who dropped money into our collection buckets.

A SERVICE OF WORDS AND MUSIC FOR

CANDLEMAS With the Kelling Consort Director Angela Dugdale Organist Philip Adam

Together with the donated goodies or vouchers and the money collected during the ‘Pub Dash’ we put together 21 Christmas Hampers which were donated to 11 families in Sheringham and 10 families in Cromer. We would like to thank Action for Children in Holt and Sure Start in Cromer for undertaking the task of delivering the hampers to the families on our behalf.

We are now busy getting ready for another fundraising year. We will have our Tombola stall at both the Sheringham Carnival and Cromer Carnival, as well as other venues so please come and see us. We are also holding a fundraising ‘Race Night’ on 21 March at The Dunstable Arms. Look out for the posters that will be going up soon. Why not come along and have a flutter on the horses and/or dogs and have a good night out. If you would like to know more about the work of The Lions or even come along to a meeting please contact Lions Brian or Hazel Harris on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com

Double Celebrations for Crayford & Abbs

North Norfolk Nissan dealer Crayford and Abbs are celebrating 10 years of business this month.

The dealership, which is based at Bodham, is planning to mark its anniversary by raising money for two local charities; donating on every sale and service to their chosen charities are The Holt Youth Project and Sheringham Woodfields School. The birthday celebrations come close on the heels of their success as one of the country’s top dealerships for selling electric Leaf cars in 2014. The dealership came top of their league of 28 rural dealers nationally, having sold 21 Leafs last

year, more than double their target, which combines with other targeted achievements in 2014won them a luxury holiday in South Africa for Kevin and Elaine Abbs and a gala Dinner in Birmingham, hosted by Nissan Directors for Rupert, James and Paul from the sales team. The Leaf award is a particularly impressive achievement bearing in mind that rural north Norfolk does not have anywhere near the number of charging points as in the cities. Crayford and Abbs have been working with the NNDC to increase charge points in our area. Sales manager Rupert Fox said ‘For us at Crayford and Abbs, it is a great feat that we have

Crab and Lobster Festival 2015 From 15 - 17th May, Cromer and Sheringham will host the sixth Crab and Lobster Festival.

This year, the Food Trail will involve a bit of learning and a bit of silliness. 25 venues across Cromer and Sheringham will display a Sea Food Fact in their restaurant windows, writes Isaac Cummings-Knight. These facts will be, in the words of President Noel: “some true, some false, some silly!”, so it will be up to participants to work out which are true for themselves. A change from last year is that there will be no formal prize for the best score.

The Art Trail this year will be wheel decorating. It is £60 to buy a wheel. The winners will be announced 30th August.

The program for the festival includes music,

art, food, and heritage. Musical groups: Backdraught and the Sheringham “Shantymen” will perform. There will also be a cook theatre, a heritage marquee, fishermen activities, and many seafood outlets. Most stalls will be in Cromer but both towns will be sharing the major events between them. Chairman Tony Shipp said it is no longer possible to shift all activities and events from Cromer to Sheringham to split the festival evenly.

For the third year running, the Festival ran its Community Grant Scheme that aims to support local charities and organisations.

On January 15th the committee revealed a total of £4000 was successfully raised to make grants which have been awarded to the following organisations: Roughton Crazy Kids Club, Age UK, Sheringham After Breast Cancer, Halsey House, Cromer Walkers are Welcome, Sheringham Beach Life, Sheringham Primary School, North Norfolk Fit Together,

As we approach the end of our 25th Anniversary year, we look back on the support that we’ve provided since 1989, through our Helplines, UKwide support groups and online services – and forward to the challenges ahead in continuing to change the way people think and talk about eating disorders, improve the way services and treatment are provided, and empowering individuals to believe their eating disorder can be beaten.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

GROW YOUR OWN ‘ELEPHANT’ EARS

Their common names do not flatter bergenias. The dull greyness suggested by their nickname ‘elephant’s ears is very misleading as they can provide colour for much of the year from both their foliage and their flowers. Another name, ‘Pigsqueak’, derived from the sound of a thumb rubbing across the shiny leaf surface, is hardly more enticing. Unfortunately they have tended to be dismissed alongside privet and ferns, pampas grass and monkey puzzle trees as more suited to shady Victorian gardens.

At this time of the year colour is always welcome in our gardens and the first snowdrops and aconites always lift the heart. In front of the Priory Maze there are some very early daffodils already in bloom by mid January and beside the wall of the old police station in Sheringham the long bed of bergenias already have their pink flowers. This variety is B. Cordifolia but as mentioned below there are newer better

varieties. Bergenias are indeed one of the season’s most valuable plants – not only for their flowers and their richly coloured architectural foliage but for their value as foils to other winter plants and bulbs. For sheer brilliance of colour the variety ‘Eric Smith’ has long been a star. Created by one of the most famous breeders, and named after him when introduced in the 1970s by Beth Chatto; in some seasons the leaf colour is almost scarlet. The leaves are upright, the plants form tight clumps, and surrounded by snowdrops, the effect is dramatic. This variety has deep coral-pink flowers. A little more open in habit,

Children Go Free at Bure Valley Railway!

‘Bressingham Ruby’ has red-pink flowers and a burgundy tone to its leaves and more arching, slightly rippled foliage, while the neat, small-leaved ‘Abendglut’ also features more open growth with magenta flowers and leaves that are wine-coloured on the backs for months before the whole plant becomes purplish in winter. I also understand, that there are two variegated varieties although I have not seen them growing anywhere. ‘Tubby Andrews’ is streaked and splashed with gold and cream on a green background and cream-edged ‘Solar Flare’ is more hosta-like, with a green centre and an irregular cream and yellow margin. Bergenias are undemanding, growing happily in shade or sun as long as the soil is not too dry. Colour is often better in less fertile soil. Nip off old foliage as it turns brown so plants look smart before the surrounding spring bulbs flower. Mulch annually. When clumps become gappy lift, discard the older woody growth and replant the young strong shoots. Look out for vine weevils which can be troublesome. I leave the final words to the famous gardener, Margery Fish, a great fan of bergenias, who confirms their great virtues , ‘They do not mind at all where they grow, in sun or shade, in soil with or without lime, in walls or paving, fat living in rich beds or starvation in poor soil. You can pull bits off at any time and each piece will grow without the leaves showing any sign that an operation has taken place, in fact I cannot remember ever seeing a wilting bergenia.’

Bob Wilkinson

The Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway returns for the children’s half term holiday from 14th to 22nd February 2015. The Railway’s resident bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family!

Trains will operate from both Aylsham and Wroxham stations three times per day. A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event.

To make this truly a children’s event, the Railway is giving free travel to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). No prior booking required.

P.S. Don’t forget to bring your own teddy so that the Railway Bear is not lonely!

Every cat that comes into our care, visits one of our vets for a health check as soon as possible after arrival. Once they have established the cat is in good health and advised if flea and worm treatments are required, they will vaccinate and microchip the cat (if this has not already been done). If the cat has not been neutered, an appointment is made for this to take place. Kittens, however, will not been seen, unless they have a health problem, until they are 9 weeks old, which is when they have their first vaccination. They will not be chipped until they have the second vaccination which can be after they have left for their new homes. Because we believe vaccinating and chipping are important, we do pay for this to be done.

We do on occasion have cats come into care that have been chipped but have found in the past that the owner’s details have not been kept up to date and sometimes the owner has not even registered their details with the micro chip company. It is important to remember to do this, especially when you move home, to make sure that should your cat go missing after the move you can be reunited with it.

Vaccinating and chipping our cats is very important as is neutering them. As well as the health benefits for the cats it does mean that there are not so many unwanted and abandoned cats needing our help. It is one of the aims of Cats Protection to encourage people to neuter their pets and as a consequence the vouchers we now offer those who require help have been increased to £40 for females and £25 for males, which goes a long way towards the actual cost of the operations and will hopefully mean more people contact us for help. With fewer cats becoming pregnant at this time of the year, now is a good time to contact our neutering line to see if you are eligible for help.

Spring

It’s spring, it’s spring, How those birds sing! There’s just a little breeze Nodding the snowdrops Under the trees. A gentle fawn drinks by the stream, An owl swoops by, What a magical scene. In our garden we can see Daffs popping up here and there Under every tree.

Diane Berthelot

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Lepto4 Vaccination

In January 2015 we launched a new programme to include the new Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise of this potentially fatal disease.

Whether your dog is

Small

or

Big

The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter. North Norfolk Photographic Society

The New Year began for North Norfolk Photographic Society on 7 January when four members spoke to the club about aspects of their own photography.

First was Paul Hughes who went on a solo walk along the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. Of the various routes, the one from the French border is the best known ‘Camino’ and this was the one that Paul took. He called his talk ‘A Camera on the Camino’ and showed numerous pictures he took over more that 30 days of walking some distance of almost 800 kilometres. Paul described the accommodation along the way - one run by an English couple - excellent. Another infested with bed-bugs. Photographs were shown of the landscape, now fairly level farmland, then rugged and mountainous. Buildings from adobe (mud) agricultural barns

to lavish medieval churches.Paul said that although he went solo, he was never alone. Hundreds of thousands walk the Camino each year and a great sense of fellowship exists.

After the break, three short presentations were given. First by Judith Wells who spoke about her travels through climates hot and cold (Africa, the Amazon basin, north Norway and South Georgia to name just a few) and showed some of her photographs of birds from all these places, many of astonishing colour and brilliance.

Secondly, Robin Johnson showed some of the weird things that he does with his images, using the tricks built into software like Photoshop.

Last but by no means least, Judy Knights showed a number of the beautiful photographs that she had

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30 pm in Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Photographer's focus on RNLI

Timb Win er dow Now s Avai lable

Jack Lowe, grandson of actor Arthur Lowe, is undertaking an epic photographic project involving a visit to all 236 Royal National Lifeboat Institution stations to record the launch view on glass plates using a Victorian method of exposure and development.

Passionate about photography all his life, Jack Lowe visited Sheringham RNLI station on Sunday 18 January as part of the Norfolk tour of lifeboat stations along the county's coast. The Norfolk odyssey began in Great Yarmouth on 14 January and concluded in Hunstanton on 20 January, with visits to Happisburgh, Cromer and Wells in between.

The mission is to record on the sensitised glass and metal plates, a view from each station as seen by the crew when they launch. The completed works, which may take between 3 and 5 years to complete, will then be shown as a collection and be produced as a book to raise funds for the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea.

Arthur Lowe, Jack's grandfather, was well-known as his character Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, which was filmed in the county. Less well known is the actor's love of boats, so it is fitting that his grandson should visit and record in such an iconic way the views seen by the crew as they launch to help save lives at sea, and Sheringham volunteer crew were delighted to be involved in the process.

18

Jack visited each station in his converted NHS ambulance called Neena, which doubles as his dark room - since the Victorian photographic process invented in the 1850's means there is only a 10 - 15minute window between exposure and development, Neena is a vital link to ensure the plates are successfully completed. Neena could become a familiar sight around our coastline. Sheringham Independent 408 January 31st 2015

And the moral of the story is …

I would like to share with your readers a story of love and hope.

The old saying ‘never give up hope’ was no more true than when my sister and her family came to stay for a week’s holiday for carnival week in August …

Arriving on Saturday 2 August we planned out first day on the Sunday for a fun-packed day on the beach watching all the carnival activities. The tide was very high when we got there at 11am and the children were, as always, looking forward to going into the sea and playing on the sand.

My nephew Dale took his three girls down to the water’s edge to splash around and Dale went into the sea for a swim. Shortly after, disaster struck and his wedding ring came off in the sea. After the tide went out we all went down and scrabbled about on the shingle hoping, in vain, we might be lucky enough to find it … but no such luck!

We went home believing that it was lost to the sea forever.

On telling this to a friend of mine, Charles O’Regan, he suggested that we place an advert in Starlings Newsagents for any metal detector enthusiasts who might be able to bring it to light.

Two weeks later and after my family went home, a phone call came from a Mr Barry

Moore who offered to try and find the ring with his metal detector. We met by the Burlington steps and I showed him where we had been on the beach. We searched unsuccessfully for about an hour and when we left the beach he assured me he would continue to look as he regularly went to the beach, I also had calls from two other people offering to search, but again to no avail.

Then on 16 December, four and a half months later, I had the most incredible phone call. Mr Moore called to say he had found the ring. It was buried three inches down in the sand. He knew immediately it was the correct ring because of its inscription ‘T4E’ standing for ‘Together for Ever’.

I was bursting with excitement to tell my sister that her son’s wedding ring had been found! Like me, she nearly dropped the phone in shock but couldn’t think of anything better than to wrap it up and give it to them as a surprise on Christmas Day. Wrapping it in a large box, then a smaller box inside she nestled the ring in a box of confetti and wrote the words ‘remember to never give up hope, some things are meant to be together for ever’ and this really is one of them.

Christmas arrived and the whole family were so excited to think of them opening the box with the lost wedding ring inside as obviously after four and a half months nobody thought it would ever be seen again. When Dale and his

wife Gemma opened it together, as they were instructed to, they were so overcome with emotion, not just to have the ring back but to think of the efforts of the people in Sheringham to find it. My sister rang Mr Moore to thank him personally and my nephew rang me on Christmas Day to say how thrilled he and his wife were to have the ring back.

What a lovely way to end the year – Christmas truly is the priceless gift of giving, loving, caring and sharing with family and friends. Happy New Year to you all and thank you so very much to all who offered their help.

Carole Farrow

P.S. I like to think my late husband David was looking down on the ring and keeping it safe.

Sheringham History Group

Sheringham History Group had its first talk of 2015 on Wednesday evening 7 January at the Mo Museum.

Mr. Francis Farrow gave an information-packed talk about Beeston Common including Sheringham Common. Beeston back common is split by the Bittern railway line and along with top common is located north of Cromer Road. Beeston and Sheringham Common are located south of Cromer Road. Gone are the days of bonfires around early November, the grazing of goats and geese between the wars and the paper mill from mid 1700 until 1871. Also gone are a circus and assembly point for the carnival. In the ’70s ponies were found grazing on the common and they helped to manage it naturally. Mr. Farrow over-laid Fadan's map of 1797 on a current map of the Common, and some housing has been added on Sheringham Common. 22

Martin Lawes Painting Decorating & Tiling

As a Club, we look forward to seeing both old faces and new on 26 April - you can download an entry form from the website www.nncvc.org.uk or contact Christine Sparrow on 01603 781917 email csparrow57@gmail.com

Many people have come and gone with fond memories of the Common but Beeston Common lives on. A simple thank you seems not enough to Francis Farrow who claims he was nearly born on the common. A marine geophysicist, he has devoted much time and effort eventually forming an official management team in 1986. The pond and heath has to be cleared every 4-5 years. Mr. Farrow is Hon. Warden of Beeston Common and is much involved with the website www.beestoncommon.org.uk. He also contributes a thorough article about the common to the Sheringham Independent with back issues available through www.rosevillapublications.co.uk. If you are interested in birds plants or animals seen in North Norfolk area in the past, this is a valuable source available on the internet. Although Beeston Common was designated a Special Site of Scientific Interest in 1986, I am sure Mr. Farrow would agree we should visit and appreciate the commons that continue to contribute to this area. Ann Steward calls for NCC to withdraw Sheringham parking survey and start again

Norfolk County Council has recently issued a consultation on introducing parking charges in the popular seaside town.

Ann Steward, Conservative Perspective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk criticised the survey, saying “Norfolk County Council has wasted tax payers money on a parking survey for Sheringham that is not fit for purpose. I have yet to meet anyone in Sheringham who is in favour of parking charges. Our coastal towns are only just recovering from the economic downturn; we should not make it more difficult for them to attract visitors and new business.

The County Council has admitted that it has not worked with other stakeholders to agree the survey, and it has agreed that the Chamber of Trade could also do a survey. This is not joined up enough. Norfolk County Council has not spoken with partners to look at the issue. Norfolk County Council should withdraw this survey and take a more collaborative approach involving the businesses and residents in the town, the Chamber of Trade, North Norfolk District Council and Sheringham Town Council. Decisions taken about this need to be appropriate for now and for the next 20 years and more.”

The Parking Survey in Sheringham will continue

You will, by now, have witnessed another attempt by certain individuals to stop the survey on parking in Sheringham and Cromer.

This survey is the first stage of a study to consider resident permit schemes and on street parking charges that seek to manage the demand for parking in Sheringham and Cromer, based on local requirements. This first letter is not a consultation on any proposals - it is an initial survey.

AT THE PRESENT TIME THERE ARE NO PROPOSALS. Residents’ and businesses’ views and issues on parking in town will allow NCC officers to identify any hotspots that could be looked at. These will then go back to the local stakeholder group, Town Councils, Chamber of Trades, NNDC members etc and proposals will then come from these meetings with the stakeholder groups and myself, and only what is best for Sheringham will be the outcome.

Dear Margaret,

Val and John Laker, on behalf of East Anglian Air Ambulance, would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made our EAAA dinner held at the Constantia Cottage Restaurant in East Runton on Thursday 4 December so successful.

Thank you to the media who advertised the event, the Constantia staff, those who supplied raffle prizes and especially those who came and supported the dinner. A big thank you to Graham Jones who was our auctioneer for the evening.

Everyone had an enjoyable time and East Anglian Air Ambulance was presented with a cheque for £375.

Our next dinner will be a lunchtime event held at Sheringham Golf Club on 28 March. Details will follow later. Thanking you, Val and John Laker

Having been asked over the last few years by local people to do something about parking in their roads and town centre, now is the chance. Stopping local people having their say or being involved in what is a local issue is wrong. I will not sit and watch local views kicked into touch.

Interestingly NNDC, with other districts, set up the Norfolk Parking Partnership in 2010 and have a seat on the group setting up this study at County?

Also interesting is that most of those trying to stop this are the stakeholders in their various forms for a variety of reasons, some nothing to do with parking.

The Sheringham Society is looking for new volunteers to greet and interact with visitors to bring alive the historic Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and the unique Shell Fine Art Gallery on Westcliff.

The Fisherman’s Heritage Centre is dedicated to demonstrating the history of the lifeboats provided by the Upcher family of Sheringham Hall in the late nineteenth/ early part of this century and contains the historic Henry Ramey Upcher Lifeboat. The Shell Fine Art Gallery contains an amazing collection of nearly 200 shell-art creations, all the work of Peter Coke. Over 24,000 visitors visited the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and the Shell Fine Art Gallery last year. Visitors comments include: “Amazing; Unique collection, has to be seen; this a fabulous tribute to the lifeboat folk and their communities.

The Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and Shell Gallery opens during Easter and then from May to the end of September, as well as during the autumn school half term holiday.

We are looking for people who could do a two hour slot a week, either between 12pm and 2pm, or between 2pm to 4 pm. If you feel able to spare two hours once a week, or even to be available to fill in occasionally, please get in touch with Paula Chapman on 01263 824338 or by e-mail secretary@sheringham-preservation.org.uk.
