Love for Leo
Fundraising hats are firmly on again for partners Moss Taylor and Robina Churchyard, both well known for their fundraising.
Moss was the founder of the Sheringham Children's Trust, which gave financial help to bereaved children in the local area. Sadly, as with many small charities, donations diminished and the charity had to close, but it had helped many children over a number of years.
Robina was the founder of Animal Crackers, raising thousands of pounds for animal sanctuaries. The group had to stop fundraising when Robina's late husband needed full time care at home.
Now Moss and Robina have been inspired by Leo, a beautiful little boy who has cerebral palsy. Leo is three years old and is unable to talk, walk or sit unaided, despite which he never stops smiling or laughing, except when the serious business of eating is taking place. He has a special smile for Moss, his gramp.
Through local appeals and Leo, Moss and Robina have realised that children with cerebral palsy really need very expensive equipment that is not available on the NHS in order to improve their quality of life.
So hello to ‘Love for Leo’, fundraising not for Leo, but for local children with cerebral palsy, and hopefully having a pot of money available so donations can be made when necessary. Mary at the All Natural Company shop in the High street is kindly allowing us to have a tray with garden produce for sale when available and now Robina's homemade marmalade and preserves, with all proceeds going to Love for Leo.
Moss donated money from the sale of his books at his talk ‘Norfolk through the Lens of a Naturalist’ and will be making donations from future talks.
For more information contact Moss on 01263 823637 or Robina on 01263 823588.

Council calls on ‘Absent Voters’ to refresh their signatures
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has sent letters to 501 long-term absent voters asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.
Postal voters, proxy voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years, are being asked to provide the Council with a new signature if they want to remain an ‘absent voter’.
Returning the completed form by 2 March 2015 will ensure that absent voters will remain eligible to vote in future elections. Reminder notices will be sent to those who have not returned their form by 9 February 2015. If the deadline of 2 March 2015 is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.
A frequently asked questions sheet with more information concerning the absent vote signature refresh is available to view online.
For any queries relating to the absent voter signature refresh, please contact NNDC’s Electoral Services team on 01263 516046 or 516317.

Mid Norfolk Citizens Advice Bureau What we do
The Citizens Advice service helps people resolve their problems. As the UK's largest advice provider we are equipped to deal with any issue, from anyone, spanning debt and employment to consumer and housing, plus everything in between.
In the last year alone, the Citizens Advice service helped 2.1 million people with 6.6 million problems. But we're not just here in times of crisis - we also use clients’ stories anonymously to campaign for policy changes that benefit the population as a whole.
Mid Norfolk CAB offers free, confidential advice sessions in Briston and Sheringham. These are particularly useful for people who would otherwise be unable to access bureau services. Venue details below:
Sheringham YESU Centre (opposite amusements) Second and fourth Thursday of every month 10am – 1pm
Briston Salvation Army Hall (opposite the Co-op) First Thursday of every month 10am – 1pm
We are also able to offer specialist debt advice at each venue.

Binham Blue Stuffed Chicken Breast with a Green Been Salad
Although we still seem to be in the grip of a long, cold winter, the snowdrops are out and the Grove is re-open after a refurbishment in January. We’ve been overwhelmed with demand for the restaurant during the last two weekends, so if you would like to come along and try our fantastic two-rosette local Norfolk dishes then please do book first!
This season is going to be very interesting for Cromer; house prices seem to be rising and there are definitely many more posh cars navigating the one-way system. Is the Burnham Market effect sweeping round the coast? We will wait and see, and in the meantime concentrate on trying to provide the high standards that we have done over the last (nearly) 80 years.
We look forward to seeing you at the Grove!
Ingredients • 4 chicken breasts • 300g Binham Blue • 24 slices of pancetta • Rapeseed oil • salt
• freshly ground black pepper For the green bean salad • 4 handfuls green beans • ½ lemon, juice only • 3-4 tbsp cold pressed virgin rapeseed oil Preparation method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas 6.
2. Place each chicken breast between cling film and, using a meat mallet, bash out the pieces until about 0.5cm/0.25in thick. Remove the cling film.
3. Place a piece of Binham blue in the middle of each chicken breast, season and roll up the chicken 4. Place 6 slices of pancetta, side by side. Place one chicken breast on the pancetta slices and tightly wrap pancetta around the chicken.
5. Place the chicken breasts on a baking tray, drizzle with a rapeseed oil and cook in the oven for about 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted.
6. Meanwhile, blanch the green beans for a few minutes in boiling water and then refresh in iced water.
7. Toss the beans when cold with the
Newly formed North Norfolk based charity benefits from a North Norfolk Big Society Fund
‘Food for Thought’, a newly formed North Norfolk based charity has recently been awarded a grant from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund (BSF).
The charity runs support groups and lunch clubs for people with dementia and their carers. It was set up when the organisation that had been running the groups had to withdraw their support.
Food for Thought was awarded £2000 from North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund after the awarding panel commended the dedication and commitment of the Food for Thought volunteers who have worked hard to ensure that vital groups for people affected by dementia are still available.
Cabinet Member and Big Society Fund panel Chairman, John Lee said “Dementia has a devastating effect on those affected by the illness and their carers. NNDC has recently pledged to become a dementia friendly Council and was pleased to be able to offer a Big Society Fund grant to ensure the continuation of these vital support groups.”
Food for Thought runs supports groups in Bodham, Cromer and North Walsham on a monthly basis. For more information contact Catherine Moorhouse on 01263 721344 or visit Food for Thought’s website www.foodforthoughtnorfolk.weebly.com

As ever, the Potty Morris Festival will be held on the first full weekend of July, so keep Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July free.
This weekend of music and dance in Sheringham is so popular with the folk dancers and musicians of this country that, for many, it is a ‘must attend’ event in their calendars. We already have 34 morris and folk dance sides signed up, and many more on the ‘waiting list’. The committee members are working really hard to make this one of the best ever festivals that Sheringham hosts. There will be live music in the pubs on the Friday night and the ever- popular Shantymen will be performing on Saturday lunchtime at Lifeboat Plain and again in the evening in the Lobster PH garden. The Ugly Dog Skiffle band will be performing in their unique way at Lifeboat Plain on Saturday evening, giving you the chance to get your dancing feet working! If you are interested in helping in any way please don’t hesitate to contact either Clive on 822302 or Tony on 821514
Jumble Up - now a Regular Event at Sheringham Oddfellows.
Following the success of last year’s Jumble Up event held at Oddfellows in March 2014, dates have now been confirmed for 2015 with the opening event starting on 7 March. Jumble Up events aim to provide a local venue with a great atmosphere for buying and selling good quality secondhand and vintage clothing, homeware, kitchenalia, memorabilia and much more.
Our first event will be on 7 March - tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be on sale with 40s and 50s music playing whilst you browse. If you would like to join our happy band of stallholders, please ring Jeannie on 07867121760 or email me on Jeannie.dorrington@yahoo.co.uk In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk
Sheringham South Surgeries

Sheringham Shoal Community Fund helps people ‘get on their bikes' The Sheringham Shoal Community Fund, set up by the owners of the offshore wind farm to help local ‘green' projects, has awarded a grant of £6,800 to Kickstart of Dereham to invest in energy-efficient electric mopeds.
operation, and gave us a one-off grant to plug the gap while we got back on our feet. We built up our fleet by investing in more petrol-driven mopeds - the best option available at the time."
In a rural county such as Norfolk, travelling long distances to work or college is the norm, and for those reliant on public transport this may be impossible or if not impossible, constraining. Buses and trains do not always run at convenient times. This is a problem not encountered or even imagined by people living in cities.
And this is why Kickstart began - with two ladies who responded to the plight of two local youngsters who could not get to college by public transport, and bought mopeds for them to use. The number of bikes they bought out of their own pockets rose to ten, before, in 2000, the husband of one of the ladies began to research funding for the project. He found success in a number of areas, and was able to register Kickstart as a charity, increase the number of bikes to 40, and hire premises in Dereham. The project has had its ups and downs over the years, but today it employs nine members of staff, has a fleet of 261 mopeds, is 100% self-funding, and is the country's largest operation of its kind.
Dale Curtis took over as Project Manager in 2012, at a low time in the charity's history. Funding had dropped and he needed to find ways of sustaining income. "I was on a mission to keep Kickstart running for our clients and staff," he explains. "Fortunately, Norfolk County Council could see the benefits of the
managed by the Norfolk Community Foundation and provides grants to North Norfolk community groups that are looking for financial assistance for projects that fulfil strict criteria.
The application from Kickstart was successful, and Dale took delivery of the five Yamaha mopeds on 22 December.
It has been Dale's vision to expand the fleet with energy-efficient, greener, lighter, electric mopeds. Kickstart owned just one electric moped four years ago; it was big and cumbersome, and not very popular! However, he did his research, found a suitable machine at a reasonable price from a Yamaha dealer in Stafford. He discovered that battery development has moved on apace over the past few years. The battery pack on the new Yamaha is only one fifth of the size of Kickstart's first electric moped, and allows it to run for twice the distance (35 miles) before it needs recharging, (which can be achieved using a normal domestic supply), at the same speed as 50cc petrol moped.
With all his facts to hand, Dale applied to Sheringham Shoal Community Fund for a grant to purchase the mopeds. This fund is
The plan is to implement a 6-month trial of the mopeds with suitable clients, to make a comparison of cost, reliability and ease of use, with petrol-driven vehicles. "With a range of 35 miles before needing a 6-hour battery recharge, these mopeds won't be suitable for all our clients," explains Dale. "I see them coming into their own for point-to-point use - that is for someone to get to work or college and back home; they haven't the range for wider use. But if the trials prove to be successful, I would like to see 50% of our fleet being electric mopeds in the future.
"I am very grateful to the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund for allowing Kickstart to set off down the road of clean energy. Although development of the battery pack hasn't gone far enough to allow us to go all electric, it has taken huge strides when you compare them to what was available only four years ago. Today, huge investment is taking place in in battery development, and I'm very optimistic that we shall be able to go down this route in the future."
Since its establishment in 2010, the Sheringham Shoal Community fund has made grant awards totalling around £280,000 to local organisations.

Dear Margaret,
I am not sure to whom County Councillor Hannah is referring when he says that certain individuals wish to stop the Sheringham parking survey, The Sheringham Parking Action Group (SPAG) welcomes the survey.
To ensure that the survey is representative of residents considered views on the matter, it is vital that they are all fully aware of the facts concerning the reasons for conducting the survey, residents permit scheme and the pay and display machines that it might lead to.
Any survey that is based on a general lack of knowledge of the subject would provide a false result. I would therefore urge residents to give careful consideration when completing the survey. SPAG was formed in an effort to inform Sheringham residents of the full facts concerning both permit and on-street pay and display parking. Surely, for the future economic future of Sheringham it is important that such a survey is conducted in an open way with all the facts made available. After all if something looks too good to be true then it generally is!
It will be interesting to see what percentage response Norfolk County Council receives to the survey bearing in mind that if residents do not have access to the internet then they will need to pay postage to return their completed survey. Surely if a representative response was wanted, the survey would have included Freepost return. Bob Smith
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
Dear Margaret,
I am responding to the incredibly condescending and insulting letter from Jack Broughton on the subject of the Coastal MOT Centre, published in issue 407.
Firstly Jack, what has this got to do with you? You say you are a new resident of Sheringham so we know that the garage was in its present location and trading position when you decided to favour our town with your presence some 6 months ago. In fact it has been a garage since the 1920s and provides, at present, a living for 9 families. It seems that your real motivation is revealed when you say that the garage is situated near your apartment and that vehicles from the garage park near your apartment on Norfolk Road!
The remarks about the condition and appearance of the garage premises, looking “like a wreckers yard” are insulting and subjective, being merely your own opinion, it is a working garage after all. Most of us are not fooled by superficial cosmetic attraction and look beneath this for expertise, service and value. In July 2009, a controversial EU ban on fresh produce (26 types of fruit and vegetables) that failed to match standard shapes and sizes – such as bent carrots, curled cucumbers and knobbly potatoes – was lifted. Up to that point, an estimated 20% to 40% of UK fruit and vegetables was routinely rejected and dumped before it reached the shops. This produce was perfectly edible and tasty, it merely didn’t look like someone’s concept of perfection. I hope you understand the analogy!
Robin and his excellent staff have helped many locals, and visitors, out of serious mechanical predicaments and we are grateful for his continuing business presence in such a convenient and accessible location, notwithstanding your suggestion that the present location is “out of place” in the town. We welcome new blood but frankly, we are all getting fed up of people moving into our lovely town and then meddling and trying to change things they don’t like to conform to their own image of Sheringham.
It seems that you are actually the one “out of place” in Sheringham Jack and, if this is the case, I suggest you find somewhere more conducive to live that enjoys closer conformity to your concept of perfection. In spite of your tongue in cheek entreaty, you are certainly not forgiven by me, but I would turn out to wave you farewell and wish you success in your quest for Utopia. Cromer Air Cadets get Grant from NNDC Big Society Fund to develop a Flight Simulator
Cromer Air Cadets is now on its way to having a state of the art flight simulator. A grant from North Norfolk District Councils Big Society Fund has encouraged the Air Cadets to think how they can utilise their planned project to serve the local community.
improve the community for those that need it and make it a more welcoming place to live and visit.
Commanding the Squadron explains “Our Core Aims centre on promoting possible careers in aviation, including those of the RAF and commercial organisations. Having Norwich airport and other aviation based career possibilities in the region has given us the incentive to launch this project for the local community. I hope it will attract new cadets to 1895 (Cromer) Squadron and other local Squadrons and give them a solid ambition they can look forward to!”
Secondly the Flight Simulator will be made available for other local Squadrons to use for learning and enjoyment opportunities. In
The Flight Simulator will be able to provide a chance to fly virtual aircraft of all types including light training aircraft, commercial airliners or fighter jets. It will be based at the 1895 (Cromer) Squadron’s ATC Hut on the grounds of Cromer Academy but will be transportable so can be set up at various locations when required.
Serving the community is Cromer Squadron’s main aim when it comes to teaching the Cadets ‘Good Citizenship’ and the Squadron regularly helps out at community events or with local and national charities. Having the Flight Simulator will encourage non cadets to consider a career in aviation, either in the Forces or commercially and becoming an Air Cadet is a great start to fulfilling a long term ambition! More cadets will mean more opportunities to serve the local area and
It is early days in the project as yet, but plans are in place and progress will likely be steady! If you are interested in our project and possible use of the flight simulator once it is operational, then why not subscribe to our projects blog site www.1895flightsim.org.uk or check us out on Facebook at

Flight Simulator similar to the one being built. addition, local Youth Clubs, schools and other youth organisations will be offered as much exposure to its uses as possible. (If you are interested see how to get involved below).
Cromer Air Cadets is open to all Year 8 to 17 years olds to start (you can be a cadet until you are 20). We are always looking for adult volunteers (subject to the usual safeguarding checks).

Sheringham Little Theatre celebrates 55 years of its Summer Repertory by presenting its five best plays in 2015 ‘Best of the Best’ repertory season welcomes back original directors who first brought productions to life on its seaside stage.
Sheringham Little Theatre is thrilled to be producing a summer season of plays made up of the most popular past productions the North Norfolk venue has ever staged. The majority of these productions will feature the same directors credited with first staging the performances in Sheringham, including the return of Olivier Award winning actor Desmond Barrit, who will be directing the hilarious Willy Russell comedy ‘Educating Rita’ in July.
The theatre is one of the last in the country to produce a traditional summer repertory – this is a series of five plays, all sharing the same actors across the entire period. The strength of its professional summer season has earned Sheringham Little Theatre numerous accolades and a dedicated audience, ensuring that residents and tourists alike
continue scooping up seats the moment tickets go on sale.
The summer repertory is a legendary challenge for the actors involved, who are regularly required to perform in one play, learn directions for another, and memorise lines for more still – all at the same time. It’s this thrill and professional devotion which gives Sheringham’s repertory its distinct character, enabling it to showcase some of the finest acting and directorial talent in the country.
The decision to welcome back five of the most popular summer repertory productions was made to celebrate the season’s 55th year, giving audiences new and old an opportunity to experience the five ‘Best of the Best’ plays from the theatre’s past.
The first play in the season is ‘Educating Rita,’ running from 21 – 28 July. Desmond Barrit directs this classic comedy which tells the story of an alcoholic university lecturer who has his life changed by his bohemian new student.
This is followed by the Victorian costume drama ‘The Late Edwina Black’. Running from 30 July - 5 August, Warren Catherine directs this twisting tale of death and intrigue about an inspector investigating the sudden death of a wealthy aristocrat.
Next up is ‘Bedroom Farce’. Moving at a frenetic pace and featuring three separate bedrooms, this anticipated production runs from 7 – 18 August. Nicky Henson, a Founder Member of the Young Vic theatre whose career has spanned the Royal Shakespeare Company to Faulty Towers, returns to direct this much-loved Alan Ayckbourn comedy.
‘Perfect Wedding,’ running from 20 – 29 August, throws the audience into another fantastical situational comedy. Featuring themes of friendship, betrayal and ultimately love, the production returns after numerous requests for it to have another run in Sheringham. Simon Thompson returns to direct, following the critical success of ‘Caught in the Net’ last year.
Finishing the season is the Noël Coward gem ‘Private Lives,’ running from 1 – 5 September. Peter Craze, hot off from directing ‘The Trials of Oscar Wilde’ for its huge UK run, returns to direct this classic comedy of manners.
Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre said: “We are very excited about this anniversary season and look forward to welcoming back our renowned directors with their fantastic plays.”
Tickets for the event go on public sale on Monday 9 March, and will be available by calling Sheringham Little Theatre’s Box Office on 01263 822347 or by visiting www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

UEA Film students present talks and discussions at special dystopian film series in Sheringham Little Theatre
The theatre will be showing three fascinating films uncovering the darker side of cinema, including introductions and discussions by Film students from the University of East Anglia.
Sheringham Little Theatre is excited to be playing host to a great cinematic event, set to unite local students and film enthusiasts over three consecutive nights in February. The mini-film series ‘The End is Nigh’ will shed light on the ways in which directors, writers and cinematographers develop a dystopian world within their films.
For those who are particularly interested in expanding their cinematic knowledge there will be a chance to take part in post-screening discussions with film students from the University of East Anglia, who will also be introducing the films. The films were selected by Paston Sixth Form’s Film Club, who also helped organise the event.
The first film to be shown on Thursday 19 February is the German Science-Fiction film Metropolis (1927). This influential piece of cinema is set amongst the juxtaposition of two contrasting worlds.
In a highly stylised futuristic city, a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. Conflict arises when a privileged youth becomes intent on helping the workers to the dismay of his authoritative father.
The second film in the series is Delicatessen (1991) playing on Friday 20 February. Directed by Jean- Pierre Jeunet (well known for previous work such as Amelie), this French film is set in a post-apocalyptic apartment building. The story focuses on the tenants of the building, struggling for survival on the occasional delicacy of (somewhat questionable) meat from the butcher below.
Third on the bill is surreal, genre-jumping mystery The Bothersome Man (2006), in which a 40 year old man arrives in a mysteriously idyllic city with no memory of having travelled there, only to realise there is something decidedly sinister about his emotionally sterile new home.
This series is something new for the theatre, which is keen to establish closer links with Film students in the Norfolk area. This provides an

Dr Karina Aveyard, a Media lecturer at the University of East Anglia said: “These kinds of events are a great opportunity for our students to share their knowledge and passion for film with the local community. For audiences film talks and discussions can really add something special and memorable to the cinema experience.”
Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre said “When we’ve had film discussions and workshops in the past, it’s been fantastic to see how interested our audiences are and how hungry the local area is for these sorts of events. Working with the UEA in particular is ideal, as this provides a great platform for students to share their knowledge about the subject while opening it up to people who hasn’t studied it academically as well.”

Choral Society Returns to St Peter’s Sheringham for Spring Concert with Another Premiere Performance
Following on from their hugely successful First World War Centenary concert (which featured Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) commissioned from the composer Patrick Hawes) Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to St Peter's Sheringham for their Spring concert with music especially relevant for Passiontide. The concert will include the first performance of a new piece especially written for the choir by their Musical Director, Nathan Waring. A Lenten Prayer draws on words written for Ash Wednesday.
The choir will also be singing works by two quite different 19th Century composers, one British, the other Italian. The programme will include The Crucifixion by John Stainer and Stabat Mater by Giuseppi Verdi. Although very
different musically these pieces were composed just 10 years apart.
John Stainer's much loved oratorio The Crucifixion is written for choir and organ. It was composed for the choir of Marylebone Church and first performed on February 24 1887. It includes 5 hymns intended for audience participation. Giuseppe Verdi's Stabat Mater was composed in 1896-97 and now forms part of the Quattro pezzi sacri which were first performed on 7 April 1898 in the Grande Opera, Paris. The 4 pieces had been composed separately over the 20 years since Verdi 'retired' from composing after finishing his Requiem in 1874. The choir will once again be joined by two splendid male soloists whose singing has
Singing Songs of Love
To open their 2015 concert season, Norfolk’s celebrated chamber choir, The Jay Singers, make a welcome return to St Peter’s Church, Sheringham on Saturday 14 March at 7.30pm. Following their last sell-out performance at St Peter’s, they are looking forward to similar success this spring.
With Songs of Love as its title, the programme will chart a vocal range of responses to the emotion responsible for inspiring more music than any other: from simple stories to passionate outbursts, brooding melancholy to deepest devotion.
delighted audiences at recent concerts Tom Stoddart and Paul Smy – and will be accompanied on the organ by Lawrence Tao.
Tickets priced £12 in advance (£15 on the door) UNDER 18s FREE can be obtained from the Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office 01263 822347 or online via www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk
Brahms was usually desperately in or out of love and his Liebeslieder Waltzes (opus 52) for chorus and four-hand piano have an unexpected zeal and geniality, dramatising the variety of moods through characteristically brilliant key, rhythm and dynamic changes. Three folk songs by Holst, Vaughan Williams and James MacMillan introduce a more traditional but no less romantic flavour to The Jays’ evocation of love. Slightly off theme (at least in terms of secular love), Stanford’s tour-de-force Magnificat for double choir was completed in September 1918 and prompted by affection for composer C H Parry who had died the year before publication. And on the lighter side there’s a beautiful arrangement of Billy Joel’s And So It Goes, and of Blue Moon, by the American songwriting partnership Rogers and Hart.
Musical Director Neil MacKenzie continues to develop the Jays’ reputation for care, commitment and infectious pleasure in music making. He likes to keep the choir on its toes by selecting repertoire that demands plenty of vocal colour, harmony and flexibility. With Songs of Love he looks forward to delivering “a programme of beguiling beauty –encompassing traditional English and Scottish folk melody, Romantic German love poetry and the popular ardour of 20th-century America.”
The Jays are delighted that well-known local musicians Howard and Elisabeth Rooke will accompany the Brahms and they will also contribute a piece in the more popular genre.
What’s not to like – or even love?!
Tickets cost £10 (£5 under 18) from Box Office 01692 538916, Watts Stationers, Sheringham, or on the door. Alternatively, book online in advance and save money: £9 (£4 under 18s) www.jaysingers.ticketsource.co.uk For further information, email info@jaysingers.com or visit www.jaysingers.com

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Later this year the branch will have been helping cats in the North Walsham and District area for 15 years and many have been helped during this time. At the beginning, we had just 3 cat pens and it was easy to identify where each cat was when Stephanie received an enquiry from someone looking to offer one of the residents a home. As the number of pens has increased, so has the number of calls to the ‘cat phone’. When you consider just 13 cats were re-homed by us in the latter part of 2000 out of the total of over 3200 we have re-homed to date, the workload from the phone has increased considerably. We therefore took the decision for one of our volunteers to deal with enquiries relating to neutering on the special number listed below.
Because Stephanie still deals with all other enquiries relating to cats coming in (including information regarding the number of cats on the waiting list), cats being re-homed, general enquiries, feral colonies and contact with the vets, we ask callers not to ring the neutering number unless they require a voucher. At the end of the day, Stephanie will still have to deal with the enquiry and it just causes extra work for all

Indie is a very beautiful young chocolate Labrador cross and has come to us from a home environment.
Unfortunately, her owners felt she needed people with more time to devote to her. Indie has been very upset to be without her family as this is what she craves more than anything else - a peaceful, calm home with a good routine, with people she knows and loves.
Indie is a very loving and affectionate girl and adores a fuss and a cuddle. She loves to be close to you and to feel safe. Indie will need human company for a lot of the day please, although she can be left for a few hours and is not destructive. She will want, and need, a couple of good walks a day please in the countryside, or at the beach please, and is good on and off the lead (once bonded with you of course). She will enjoy playing in the garden with you, as she loves to run after toys, and your garden will need to be securely enclosed for a dog please. Indie knows basic commands and does a lovely sit. She was housetrained in her home and is very clean in her kennel.
Indie has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and can be rehomed outside of the county, within reason, subject to a successful homecheck. Indie is very good with other dogs and LOVES to play with them, but she would rather enjoy being the only dog at home please. She could live with older children aged 12+.
Indie will make a very special companion and will need dog-experienced new owners who will allow her to settle at her own pace in her new home. You will need to be kind, calm and patient and be able to give Indie the time she needs to shine!
concerned. Similarly, enquiries received via the Cats Protection website can sometimes be replied to but, here again, if it relates to someone wishing to re-home one of our cats or for a cat to go on our waiting list, a quicker response will be received if they call the cat phone as Stephanie does not use a computer for cat work.
Last year we had just two cats come into care that were over 12 years old. Already this year Tookey, one of the we have four such cats in residence. These lovely older cats in lovely cats have joined us because their owners care. She would love to can no longer care for them or have died. find a new home with Missy and Tookey, who have only just joined her companion, Missy. us, are lovely tabby girls who are in good health and just love having a fuss and a cuddle. As cats tend to live longer nowadays they could live for many more years and would be suitable companions for the older cat lover, of which I am one.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From Surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.
So what has changed? Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains- ‘three things’-

2] The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable ones-same as used in fillers.
3] The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgenceof interest in thread lifts.
A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.
How is the procedure performed? No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area.
What is the recovery like? After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days. There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Part 1 - What are the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards? by Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were established under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Mental Health Act 2007, to ensure that the freedom of people in care homes and hospitals is restricted only if there is no alternative, and that it is done in a safe and legal way. It must always be done in the best interests of the person concerned.
Any adult being cared for by such a provider, who has a mental health condition (including dementia) which prevents them from making decisions about their care or treatment, may potentially come under these safeguards. The Mental Capacity Act sets out the test for whether someone lacks mental capacity to make decisions, which I will consider further in my next article.
Before applying for a deprivation of liberty authorisation, the care provider must consider whether such care can be given to that person (let’s call her Mrs A) in a less restrictive way. If not, then the care provider must get permission to deprive Mrs A of her liberty. This process provides the following safeguards for Mrs A: 1. She will have a representative to protect her interests.
2. She (or her representative) will have the right to challenge the deprivation of liberty arrangements through the Court of Protection.
3. There will be procedures in place for the
deprivation of liberty to be monitored and reviewed regularly.
If the care provider considers it necessary to deprive Mrs A of her liberty in order to provide the necessary care, it must apply for authorisation to the relevant supervisory body, which in England is usually the Local Authority (LA). The LA will assess Mrs A to see whether the necessary criteria for DoLS are met, and will then grant or refuse the authorisation.
There must be at least two independent, trained assessors – a best interests assessor (a social worker, nurse, occupational therapist or chartered psychologist) and a mental health assessor (a doctor, usually a psychiatrist or geriatrician). They will report back to the LA, and if they find that the necessary conditions are met, the LA will authorise the deprivation of liberty, possibly with changes to make the care less restrictive. An authorisation should not be used where someone meets the criteria for detention under the Mental Health Act 1983.
The authorisation lasts for a maximum of 12 months, but should be for the shortest time possible. It must be reviewed regularly, especially if there is a change of circumstances, and the LA must remove the authorisation if it is no longer

01263 822838 required. They must also provide Mrs A’s representative, usually a family member or friend, with information about her care, and about any changes to the DoLS.
Because it is unlawful to deprive someone of their liberty without this authorisation, the care provider can grant itself an urgent authorisation, which will usually be valid for seven days. They must apply for standard authorisation at the same time.

North Norfolk Railway Application Successful
The Coastal Communities Fund has announced that North Norfolk Railway has been successful in its application for just under £½ million to develop its facilities at Sheringham Station and provide dedicated boiler shop facilities at its Weybourne engineering base.
The developments at Sheringham have been under discussion with North Norfolk District Council for approaching a year. The plans, which received planning permission in July last year, will see the old toilet block, operated by NNDC, demolished along with the current Tourist Information unit (TIC). In their place will be a new building, which will offer new toilet facilities to the station and the public, a new Tourist information facility and a new shop. The provision of the latter will release valuable space in the current station building, on Platform 1, which will be opened up to double the size of the current buffet. The Railway will take over the operation of the TIC and responsibility for the Toilet management. The TIC operation is a natural progression with the Railway being deeply involved in the tourism sector and the cross use of staff will provide year round tourism support instead of the current April to October period.
Trevor Eady General Manager said that the facilities planned will ‘ensure all our visitors and those visiting Sheringham see a major improvement in the tourism support for the town. The Railway has grown considerably over the past few years and it is important we keep pace with that growth to ensure the visitor experience is the best it can be’.
The boiler overhaul operation, which the Railway took on in September 2013, is proving to be an excellent addition to the Railway’s portfolio. The new machine shop is almost complete and work on providing a dedicated boiler overhaul facility can now continue to ensure the facilities are appropriate for the growing opportunities.
The awarding of the grant is an exciting stepping-stone in the development of North Norfolk Railway. Planning can now start in earnest with the new Sheringham facilities due to open in April 2016 and the boiler overhaul facility later this year.

Record numbers for the second year running
The North Norfolk Railway has, for the second year running, achieved record passenger numbers. In 2013 the Railway recorded its best ever figures of 158,700 passengers travelling on the Railway. The efforts of all the staff and the army of volunteers has seen that figure surpassed in 2014 with 161,054 passengers travelling. Trevor Eady General Manager states that 2014 started exceptionally well with good support for the all the events during the early part of the year which continued throughout the main operating season. The Steam Gala events attracted large numbers of both enthusiasts and family visitors while the themed events such as Thomas, Dads Army, Vintage Transport and the Beer festival drew in visitors with the appropriate interests ensuring the events were successful. The Thomas event has been recognised by HIT entertainment, who issue the licences to hold such events, for the high standard of the event by the presentation of an award to the Railway at a recent Thomas event in London. Thomas will visit again this year on 2nd to 4th May.
Trevor puts the success of the Railway down to the enthusiasm of its volunteers, which total approaching 400. He says there is always room for more with the intensive service we operate from the end of March through to November. Anyone interested should contact the Railway for a Volunteer pack for information on the wide range of activities available. The staff, although relatively small in number, make exceptional efforts to ensure the Railway operates safely and provides a value for money experience for its visitors.
The North Norfolk Railway operates services on a regular basis from Sheringham via Weybourne to Holt with up to 10 services a day in each direction. Special events take place throughout the main operating season with the incredible 40’s event in September being the highlight of the calendar. During recent years, the whole of Sheringham has been transformed into a 40’s town with parades and flypasts to mark the event. The Railway works closely with the Chamber of Trade and local business to stage the event of the year.
The recent success in secure funding for improvements at Sheringham Station will see much improved facilities for our customers. It is hoped that work will start in October with all being available for the 2016 season.
Calls for more urgent NHS services in North Norfolk Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, Denise Burke, has called for health officials to investigate bringing additional emergency NHS services to the district to benefit our ageing population.
Mrs Burke believes that urgent minor treatment centres at Cromer and North Walsham could provide the key to taking the strain off A&E in Norwich and our struggling ambulance service. These centres would provide treatment for those with urgent but non-life threatening needs.
She also backs Ed Miliband’s call for the government to reinstate a guarantee that would ensure patients could see their GP within 48 hours – something the Labour Party promises to reinstate if elected in May.
Denise Burke says "I have called on the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to explore the feasibility of developing 24/7 urgent minor treatment centres at Cromer and North Walsham hospitals to provide medical facilities for those with urgent but non-life-threatening needs.
I believe we need more facilities in North Norfolk to allow residents to be treated nearer to home, mirroring the vision of the Government’s recent Keogh Urgent and Emergency Care review. This would also mean that ambulances and A&E at the Norfolk & Norwich hospital could focus on the most serious cases.
I hope the Clinical Commissioning Group will look seriously at this idea and not follow the knee-jerk opposition from Health Minister Norman Lamb. An online poll following my initial comments suggested the idea was supported
In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk
by at least 70% of those who voted. This kind of thinking also has the backing of the chief executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust.”
Mrs Burke plans to meet with health officials this Spring to discuss the ideas further.

Do you or someone you know have a liver disease? CAN WE HELP YOU?
We are a voluntary group offering advice and support to people who have liver disease. We organise social events, talks by Consultants and other hospital staff, and have a very active role in fundraising for amenities and equipment for patients.
Liver disease does not receive the same publicity and financial support as other medical conditions and there is less awareness of the impact it has on people’s lives. That is why we are committed to making a difference for people with a liver disease, who will probably need ongoing care.
If you would like our help or to join our group, please telephone 01362 695624

We are fundraising for a portable Fibroscan machine, equipment that will be used at the Norfolk and Norwich and Cromer Hospitals. It will cost £27,000. It is a big cost ‌ but it will make a huge difference.
The Fibroscan uses a technique similar to ultrasound to help doctors assess the extent of any liver damage in people with abnormal blood tests, to monitor and measure liver disease, and to anticipate possible complications.
The scan is quick and painless, performed in clinic, with no need for sedation or anaesthetic. Patients can leave hospital immediately afterwards. Doctors receive the scan results instantaneously.
Delays in diagnosis and treatment can result in a liver condition deteriorating and needing a higher level of medical attention. This is why the Fibroscan is so important.
If you could help, please send a cheque to Paul Bond, 19 The Lizard, Wymondham, NORFOLK NR18 9BH for ‘The Friends of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’, marked on reverse ‘Fibroscan Appeal’ or go to our ukvirginmoneygiving.com online giving page and search for the Norfolk and Norwich Liver Group

North Norfolk District Council awards funds to “We are committed to making sure that the local community groups Council’s funds are used in the most effective
Ten local community projects are on course to benefit from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund (BSF) following the decisions of the Grant Panel at its most recent meeting.
The Big Society Fund was set up by NNDC to help build strong communities in the district. The Fund aims to help communities to develop new and innovative projects which will improve their social and economic wellbeing. Conditional BSF grant awards in this round were awarded to Walsingham Parish Council (£8,000) towards the provision of play equipment and Bacton Parish Council (£5,600) towards improvements to Bacton Pavilion including disabled access.
Grants to help improve the playing field in Aylmerton (£3,500) and multi sports court in Briston (£1,000) as well as the creation of a community woodland in Great Ryburgh (£6,190) will be of benefit to local residents of all ages.
Children and young people will particularly benefit from grants awarded to 1895 (Cromer)
Squadron Air Training Corps (£3,500) towards a flight simulator and FADLOS – Kidz (£4,500) for equipment to support drama productions.
A grant to NCI Wells–next–the-Sea Coastwatch lookout (£3,969) will enable the installation of motorised shutters to improve security and support the watch-keepers who maintain watch over the harbour and local coastline every day of the year.
NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I am really encouraged that so many communities across North Norfolk have come forward with innovative projects seeking support from the Council’s Big Society Fund, to match their own considerable efforts.
“In this round the panel awarded £43,760 to community initiatives and to date the Big Society Fund has awarded 113 grants totalling £968,270 across the district. As a Council, we are delighted to reward the hard work of many local people by providing support to projects that clearly benefit our local communities. We look forward to excellent projects continuing to come forward.
SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The daffodils will soon be in flower and the Sheringham Horticultural Society is coming out of winter hibernation. The first event is the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 19 March at 7pm in St Joseph’s Hall. This will be an important meeting with some big decisions to be made and all members are asked to attend.
Our Chairman, Paddy Corden has decided to stand down but hopefully he will still be around to help the Society with his enthusiasm and experience. Glyn Bottomley has decided to step down as Treasurer and although we have a willing volunteer to look after our finances we always need more people to serve on the committee. If we can spread the jobs amongst a larger committee, the load becomes much easier.
On 16 April we will be holding our Spring Show and hopefully by then the current dreary weather will be behind us and the spring flowers will be out to brighten up the hall. During judging there will be a talk by a local chiropractor entitled ‘Pull the weeds, not your back’
AGM papers will be delivered soon but if there are any enquiries about this meeting please contact me on 01263 825364 or by e-mail rwwilkinson@btinternet.com Looking further ahead, we are holding a plant and produce sale in May. Members are asked to bear this in mind when splitting up their garden plants or perhaps a few extra seeds can be sown to provide plants for sale. Volunteers to make cakes for the produce stall will also be very welcome.

way and I encourage local community organisations to make an application to the Fund.”
NNDC will provide help and advice to applicants at all stages in the application process to help them develop excellent projects that will achieve their desired outcome and become financially sustainable in the long-term.
If you have an idea or a project that you wish to develop and apply for funding, you are encouraged to speak to your local Councillor and get in touch with the Council via Sonia Shuter 01263 516173, email supporting.communities@north-norfolk.gov.uk or visit www.northnorfolk.org/bigsocietyfund

Update on Clubs With Friends
In April 2014 About With Friends launched Clubs With Friends; a programme centred around helping youngsters with Special Educational Needs to access mainstream community activities.
Since its launch we have successfully helped a number of young people with learning disabilities, autism, or mental health conditions to become involved with local clubs and groups. This has included traditional Youth Clubs as well as specialist groups like Drama Clubs. We have also supported others in accessing voluntary work.
The project is continuing and we have room to take on more youngsters. Referrals can be made by the young person themselves or by their families or any professionals working with them. To qualify, the person must be between 13 and 25 (inclusive), have Special Educational Needs, and live in the North Norfolk area.

We can provide a tailored service to meet the needs of the individual. We will spend as much time getting to know the youngster as is necessary to find an activity or club that suits them. We can then continue to support them to access that club and help them build the confidence they need to access it independently. Additionally we can provide young mentors who act as role models.
Those who have been on the programme so far have seen some of the following positive outcomes: • Being included in their local community • Attending youth club/activity • Family feel supported/ not alone • Widened social opportunities • More friends • Improved self confidence
