Beeston Hall School U.11 Boys crowned champions at the East Region IAPS Hockey Tournament In a thrilling final on Friday 27 February Beeston Hall School U.11s defeated the hosts, Bishop’s Stortford College, 2-1 with a late winner from Hari Moondi to be crowned U.11 IAPS East Region Champions.
In a tight first half Beeston took the lead through a well taken goal from Rafe Lochore following a short corner only to be pegged back by Bishop’s Stortford making the score 1-1 going into half time. Despite fatigue setting in for both sides after playing six matches already, Beeston took the lead with less than two minutes remaining on the clock through the captain, Hari Moondi. In an exciting final two minutes the defence held firm for Beeston to record a memorable 2-1 win in front of a huge home crowd watching the final. In the morning pool games Beeston won all four of their matches scoring twelve goals without reply. In the quarter final they met local rivals Gresham’s Prep winning 2-0 which meant a semi-final against Brandeston Hall School from Suffolk who had made similar progress winning all their games without letting in any goals. out to be probably Beeston’s best performance, they ran out 5-0 winners with Toby Pallister causing havoc down the right wing giving the Brandeston defence a torrid time. All nine boys were outstanding from the moment the first whistle went and thoroughly deserved their success. Many congratulations to the squad: Hari Moondi (c); William Stoppani; Sam Doncaster; Josh Means; Archie Case; Rafe Lochore; Toby Pallister; Robert Lapping; Ben Roper.
Cromer Pier refurbishment programme nears completion
A programme to refurbish Cromer Pier’s box office, gift shop and the restaurant following the significant damaged caused by December’s tidal surge is nearing completion.
Work has been completed since the surge to make significant structural repairs to the areas underneath the box office, gift shop and the restaurant and a full refurbishment programme of these facilities is almost complete. These areas felt the full force of the storm as waves hit the sea wall and were propelled up underneath the structure.
The iconic, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) owned pier had already been the subject of extensive, £1.4million renovation and repair in the 18 months before the surge struck; work which potentially saved the structure from far greater damage.
The Council is looking forward to the completion of the refurbishment programme, which is anticipated to coincide with the onset of warmer weather and increased visitor numbers.
Tom FitzPatrick, North Norfolk District Council’s Leader, said “The pier is a vital asset, not only for Cromer but for the whole of the North Norfolk area and helps to bring in many thousands of visitors from all over the country.
“A significant capital investment of almost £2million in the pier structure and the refurbishment programme has enabled us to return the iconic landmark back to its former glory. Despite the damage it suffered, the Pier has remained open for business, and I am looking forward to it being complemented by the opening of the box office, restaurant and the shop.”
A celebration event will be held on the Pier when the restaurant, box office and the shop are all fully open.

Cromer coast protection work update The second phase of North Norfolk District Council’s £8m ‘Cromer Coast Protection’ scheme has been extended and is expected to continue until early 2016.
The scheme, designed not only to maintain the existing level of defence, but also to withstand many years of predicted sea level rise, has involved more work than was originally programmed due to the storm surge in December 2013.
To ensure minimal disruption to the Easter and summer holiday periods, work will stop as originally programmed on 31 March 2015.
Following positive discussions with key stakeholders, including residents and local businesses to consider options for the continuation of the scheme, it has been agreed that the contractor (Volker Stevin) will start site set-up on Monday 7 September in preparation of site work starting on Monday 14 September.
Work, including repairs to the timber groynes, and re-facing the existing sea walls has been completed on the east end of Cromer’s frontage.
The extension will include work at the west end, the parapet wall, underneath the Pier and promenade surfacing.
The sea defences at Cromer protect the town from the force of the North Sea. They were built in various phases as the town expanded, the earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years, the walls and groynes have withstood many storms and have been maintained, enhanced and repaired as and when required.
The coast protection scheme will reduce the impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage as well as helping to maintain a stable beach in front of the seawalls for future years. The historical significance of some of the structures has been carefully taken into consideration and the overall character of the promenade should not change.
Pedestrian access to the Pier will remain during the work, and signage will be installed to direct visitors away from work areas when required. Cromer will remain open for business and the engineering operations are a spectacle that can
be viewed from many cliff top vantage points. Work will not be carried out for two weeks over the Christmas holiday period.
Cabinet Member for Coastal Management, Angie Fitch-Tillett said “The work we are undertaking now will protect Cromer, its residents, its businesses and its visitors for many years to come, and despite the difficult working conditions being blown off course temporarily by the tidal surge, the contractor has made good progress so far.
“Right through the work we have ensured that Cromer has been open for business and this will not change with the extension to this major engineering scheme.”
The Cromer Coast Protection Project has been chosen by the Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE) to be part of its ‘This is Engineering’ campaign. The campaign has been designed to bring together construction projects across the UK to show how civil engineers shape the world around and also aims to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Part 2 – What is Deprivation of Liberty? By Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
In my previous article I considered the purpose of and procedure for obtaining Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) authorisation.
This is required by hospitals and care homes when they consider it necessary to deprive someone of their liberty in order to provide the necessary care. It can only be applied to someone who has a mental health condition (including dementia) which prevents them from making decisions about their care or treatment.
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 sets out the test for whether someone lacks mental capacity to make decisions as being if they cannot do one or more of the following: 1. Understand information given to them
2. Retain that information long enough to be able to make a decision
3. Weigh up the information available and understand the consequences of the decision
4. Communicate their decision, by any possible means.
But what exactly does “deprivation of liberty” mean? A Supreme Court case recently provided the following definition – “the person is under continuous supervision and control and is not free to leave, and that person lacks capacity to consent to these arrangements” It is not relevant whether they actually object or not to the arrangements for their care.
Other cases have provided the following examples of situations and decisions which may amount to a deprivation of liberty: • Restraint of a person in order to admit them to hospital
• Medication being given against a person’s will, in particular to sedate them
• Complete control over a patient’s care or movements for an extended period of time
• Restrictions on where they may live, against their wishes or that of a family member
• Refusal to release a patient into the care of others

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!
• Restriction of a person’s access to their family and friends
• Restriction of their movements within a care setting, including the locking of doors
• Restraint being used when giving care or treatment
• One-to-one supervision
• The use of bedrails and wheelchair straps.
A deprivation of liberty can consist of one major decision by the care provider, such as restraint or not being able to leave the care setting, or several smaller decisions, combined. Ultimately it is the amount of control that the care provider has over the person that will decide whether there is a deprivation of liberty, and each case has to be looked at individually.
The Supreme Court has observed that there have been far fewer applications for DoLS authorisations than was envisaged when the legislation came in. However, it appears that care homes in particular are increasingly applying for a DoLS authorisation whenever they have a client who lacks capacity to make decisions about their care and treatment. This may be in part to protect, quite understandably, their own legal position, but should hopefully as well provide the intended safeguards for the vulnerable person.
If you have a loved one in a care home or other care setting, it may be worth checking whether a DoLS authorisation is in place, in case you have not been made aware of this. Sheringham Independent 411 March 14th 2015

A Celebration of Holt 1st - 8th May
The Holt Society, founded in 1965, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and everyone is invited to share in a week of community events from 1 to 8 May. Don't miss out - put the dates in your diary now.
An exhibition 'Holt People and Stories' will run all week at Picturecraft Gallery with intriguing photographs of the town and it inhabitants. Did you know, for example, that Winston Churchill was photographed here in 1940? Find out more about why he was in Holt.
We will celebrate Holt's culinary talents with a Bake-Off on Saturday 2 May. Alison Yetman will be judging your entries, baked at home not on the spot. No experience necessary, but start practising now! Think attractive, delicious and fun - possibly inspired by something unique to Holt. Open to everyone adults and children.
School will be exhibiting pupils' displays on Wednesday 6 May, and the Holt Family History Project will show you how to research your family history on Tuesday 5 May. And saying it with flowers, the Holt & District Flower Club will be creating a Flower Festival for your enjoyment.
Spread the word and join us in May. Further details will be published in the Holt Chronicle, and regular updates can be found on the Holt Society's website www.theholtsociety.org

Also join him and some of the contributors sharing poignant memories at a sociable evening at the Community Centre on Friday 8 May.
Be inspired by the one-day-only POP-UP exhibition based on the theme 'A Sense of Place' on Monday 4 May. has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for approximately 3 minutes, adding the vanilla.
1. If you are using gelatine leaves, soak them in cold water until floppy, then squeeze out any excess water. Stir the leaves into the hot cream until they are completely dissolved. If you are using powdered gelatine, sprinkle it onto the hot cream in an even layer and leave it to absorb for a minute, then stir in the cream until dissolved. 2. Pour the mixture into four 125 ml ramekins. Cover each with a piece of cling film and refrigerate until set. 3. Unmould the panna cotta by placing the ramekins briefly into a bowl of hot water and then tipping them gently onto plates. Serve with fresh berries.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Quite a few of the cats that come into care arrive from loving homes for various reasons. Their owner may have gone into a home, or died, they may be moving and cannot take their pets with them or because they have not got their female cat neutered, they now have kittens and as a consequence, more cats than they can afford to care for properly. We also have other cats arriving that have obviously had a home in the past but for whatever reason they now have to fend for themselves as best they can. The female cats often arrive with a litter of kittens and generally speaking neither female nor male cats have been neutered.
As a general rule we blood test mother cats that come into care, plus any strays, to see if they have been infected with FIV/FELV. Although it may seem unlikely that a cat that has arrived from a home could have been infected, we have in the past had cats that blood tested positive for FIV (after all they cannot choose their contacts and the infection is generally transmitted when mating or fighting).
Joe, a lovely friendly lad, who has now been re-homed, came in as a stray and, as he had not been neutered but had obviously had a fight or two, could have been infected but thankfully his test was negative. Pussy Galore, a young mum with three lovely kittens, was not so lucky as her test proved positive for FIV. A blood sample then had to be retested and confirmation has been received that the original test was correct. Her kittens, Domino, Solitaire and Octopussy will now need to be tested. Because they have had contact with the disease via mum, a different test is required which will be done later this month. If their tests come back indicating they are also infected, they will need to find loving homes as indoor cats, either as the only cat or with other cats with FIV. A negative result will however mean they can go to a new home with access to the outside.
Apart from the fact that we see so many unwanted kittens, one of the reasons we encourage people to get their cats neutered, is to prevent the spread of FIV and FELV. Cats can also become Pussy Galore with her kittens, pregnant from as Domino, Octopussy and Solitaire young as four months old, when they are still growing themselves, and apart from the risks mentioned could also require help when giving birth.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.

Springtime Safety
Despite the wet weather the springtime plants are starting to appear. Snowdrops arein bloom and even the daffs are starting to poke their greenery above the surface. It is a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family.
Daffodils -
If your pet licks or eats any part of a daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower – they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine that can irritate the tissues of the mouth and throat and
Taking a few simple precautions to avoid any plants known to be deadly to pets can prevent a potential tragedy for you and your family this spring.
Here are a few common plants to be aware of:
Tulips and Hyacinths -
Tulips contain allergenic Lactones. Lactones are derived from chemical compounds and taste a bit like Whiskey. Hyacinths contain similar compounds. It is the bulbs of these two plants, not the leaves or flowers, which are toxic. There is no antidote if your dog is poisoned by eating a Tulip or Hyacinth bulb, and severe symptoms need immediate treatment.
cause excessive drooling. Lycorine can also trigger a gastrointestinal response like voiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. In more serious cases, heart and respiratory problems can occur. Severe symptoms such as these require immediate attention by a vet.
Crocuses -
The variety of crocus plants that blooms in the spring is a member of the Iridaceae family. Spring crocuses can cause gastrointestinal upset in your pet, typically vomiting and diarrhea.
Lily of the Valley -
The substance in Lily of the Valley that is toxic to your pet is called cardiac glycosides. If you think your dog has ingested a Lily of the Valley, you should get him to your vet for a checkup as soon as possible.
If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time please seek veterinary advice.

Council to coordinate commemorative events to mark Centenary of World War 1 More than 20 representatives from key North Norfolk- based organisations attended a meeting at North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices recently to discuss ideas for commemorative events and activities to mark the Centenary of World War 1.
Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, previously indicated at the Council’s Cabinet meeting on 6 January how the Council would act as a co-ordinator and a promoter for events being organised across the region during a period of four years (2015 – 2018) to commemorate World War 1.
The North Norfolk WW1 Network (NNWN) has been set up to create networking opportunities and to help those with ideas and initiatives understand what the Council can do to help them.
Representatives included 11 Town and Parish Councils, four branches of the Royal British Legion, three museums, five local historical societies, historians and publishers, officers from Norfolk County Council’s Record Office (NRO) and the Swanton Morley-based Light Dragoons.
Councillor Glyn Williams said “We had a good turnout of enthusiastic participants for the first meeting of the North Norfolk WW1 Network. All are completely committed to the project which is a great outcome”.
Colin Chambers, Chairman of the Royal British Legion’s North Walsham branch added “The meeting proved to be very productive and useful networking opportunity. It was also pleasing to see four Royal British Legion branches represented; all sharing ideas and working together with the district, town and parish councils.”
Cabinet agreed a budget of £20,000 to support activities at its meeting on 6 January and this will be used during the four year period to:

Police Interceptors Hunt Armed Robber!
John Meikle, who admits to being over 21 and who lives in Sheringham, has temporarily come out of retirement, changed his name to Sergeant Graveling and joined an elite police squad as disturbing news is heard.
An armed robber is on the loose! The crack team of the Norfolk Interceptors is tasked with apprehending him. Armed with sharp local intelligence they proceed to the last known whereabouts of this desperate criminal. With PC Bumphrey also having to interpret between the broad Norfolk accent of her partner, Sergeant Graveling and the knife sharp Oxford accent of the Inspector, things are not quite what you would expect of Police Interceptors. This witty and well observed comedy will have you aching with laughter as this fly-on-the-wall spoof proceeds to its surprising conclusion.
With an ex-copper as one of the writers, this production will not only have you creased up with laughter, but will change the way you look at our wonderful police force in the future!
This self-penned production will be put on by Sheringham Players at Sheringham Little Theatre, as one of three short plays under the title of Ménage a Trois. The event runs from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 March.
Tickets available from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office on 01263 822347.

Council completes polling districts and polling places review
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has recently completed a four yearly review of its polling districts and places, to make sure voting is convenient for people and polling stations are up to the job. Improvements have been identified and will be made with immediate effect.
The review considered whether communities are properly served by the places and facilities chosen for polling at election times; and took in to consideration how a sparsely-populated rural area can sometimes pose challenges.
A consultation exercise enabled people to suggest new places for polling stations, or comment on the suitability and existing ones. The small number of submissions that were made have been considered, including those which were set out by the Returning Officer at the start of the review and the following changes will be implemented with immediate effect:
Back to Blue Note
Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) continues on Sunday 29 March at 7.30pm. The performance will be by Back to Blue Note, a band currently making its mark on the local jazz scene. A stellar line-up playing classic numbers from the 1950s and 1960s heyday of the famous Blue Note record label.
Music by people such as Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon and so on. The musicians will be Martin Eaton (tenor saxophone), Chris Cooper (piano), Andy Doyle (bass) and Rob Masters (drums). Tickets are £8.00 from the box office (Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com
• To improve wheelchair accessibility, offer better parking facilities and more space, the polling place and polling station for the polling district of Fakenham North will change from Trap Lane Pavilion to the Conference Hall at Fakenham Academy.
• To improve wheelchair accessibility, the polling place and polling station for the polling district of Cromer Town (West) will change from the Methodist Church Hall, Hall Road to the Bullen Joinery office block in Central Road.
• A new polling venue has been located for the polling district of Holkham at The Victoria Residents Lounge, Park Road (previous location of the Rose Garden café unavailable).
• To improve wheelchair accessibility, offer better parking facilities and polling accommodation, the polling place and polling station for the polling district of Sheringham South will change from St Joseph’s Parish Hall to Sheringham Community Centre, Holway Road.
A copy of the full report, which includes information about the manner in which further representations may be made regarding the review decisions, is available for public inspection at the Council’s offices at Holt Road, Cromer and Oak Street, Fakenham. It is also available online at www.northnorfolk.org/council/8850.asp
St. Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market Village Library
After a very busy month welcoming so many visitors to see the church snowdrops, the Village Library facility, where books may be borrowed, exchanged or purchased is seriously depleted and in need of replenishment.
Donations of clean, unwanted books may be left at the back of the church and will be gratefully received.
Theatre director, Debbie Thompson, says that Jazz at The Hub has proved to be very popular with regional musicians playing to capacity audiences. The venue has developed a reputation as a beacon for jazz on the North Norfolk coast.

WildWorks World Premiere at Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2015
An immersive journey takes its audience deep into a world of shape-shifting humans and animals, created specially for the enveloping dark woods of Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall
The major theatrical highlight of this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival is a new commission from acclaimed outdoor theatre makers WildWorks, co-produced by Norfolk & Norwich Festival running from Tuesday 5 - Saturday 23 May (except Sundays).
Wolf’s Child is an immersive journey deep into the dark dense woodland surrounding Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall. It takes its audience on a journey into a world of shape-shifting animals and humans. An original landscape theatre commission from the masters of the genre, this promises to be an unmissable theatrical experience.
Created specially for the evocative woods around the National Trust property, the story is partly inspired by the Ancient Greek myth of Callisto, who became a beast and was killed by her own hunter son, and also the astonishing true story of Norfolk born Shaun Ellis, who spent two years as a fully integrated member of an Idaho wolf pack shunning all human contact. This extraordinary grown-up fairytale of love and betrayal opens in daylight against the magnificent backdrop of Felbrigg Hall. Then, as dusk approaches, the show follows an otherworldly journey through the trees to places of magical transformation; where
crows talk and wolves sing, and where one disobedient serving maid discovers her inner beast.
Norfolk & Norwich Festival enjoys an evergrowing national and international reputation for innovative and inspirational events. It is one of the UK’s big four arts festivals and one of the oldest, being able to trace its roots back to 1772.
Shaun Ellis is a special consultant to WildWorks on the project.
Wolf’s Child features original live music, a cast of 13 professional actors and musicians and up to 50 locally recruited participants.
Bill Mitchell, WildWorks Artistic Director expanded ‘Wolf's Child is a thrilling journey from safety and security into the untamed wild. We trek deep into the woods with a woman running from ‘civilisation’, confronting untamed beasts in the wilderness, and finally our own beast within’.
William Galinsky, Norfolk & Norwich Festival Artistic Director said ‘Wolf’s Child is our major commission this year. This brand new piece of landscape theatre is being created specially for us by one of the world’s most exciting site-specific theatre companies. They have created iconic productions across the world and we’re proud to be bringing them to Norfolk.’
WildWorks create sitespecific theatre that responds to landscapes and the stories within them; their most recent piece at The Lost Gardens of Heligan was part of the national 14-18 NOW programme and their critically-acclaimed The Passion with Michael Sheen drew an audience of over 25,000 to the streets of Port Talbot. From their base in Cornwall they have taken work us all around the world, hosting workshops in Palestine, leaping off harbour walls in Newcastle or awakening castles in Belgium.
The 2015 Norfolk & Norwich Festival runs from 8 – 24 May.

First Highlights announced for Holt Festival
Pop, politics, poetry, chat, drama and cuisine for North Norfolk’s premier mixed arts festival Holt Festival has announced the first highlights for the 2015 Festival. Under the stewardship of new Artistic Director Charles Pugh, the seventh Festival is already looking to include something for everyone.
From comedy to cuisine, politics to pop and classical and much more, Holt Festival brings you the best in music, theatre and the spoken word in a glorious artistic celebration. Staged in the last week of July with the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town as its backdrop, this award winning annual feast of the arts has quickly become one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Norfolk calendar. It is also increasingly enticing more visitors into the area.
‘My principal objective for 2015 is to ensure that there is quality arts and entertainment
across a range of styles and disciplines. These early announcements give a flavour of the full programme of shows and events that we shall be revealing in May,’ said Charles. He continued ‘Past successful visits from the likes of David Starkey, Melvyn Bragg, Sandi Toksvig and Michael Palin have demonstrated the appetite for this type of afternoon event so I’m pleased to be welcoming speakers of the calibre of Jeffry Archer, Michael Buerk, Dame Stella Rimington, Loyd Grossman and Tom Parker Bowles as well as the inimitable Blofeld and Baxter to Holt.’
Other big names at the festival include chart topper and pop pioneers Steve Harley with his band Cockney Rebel, influential and constantly evolving folk rock legends Steeleye Span and the rejuvenated original punk poet, comedian, movie radio and rock star John Cooper Clarke and his special guest Martin Newell. ‘I’m looking to make my first Festival as director intriguing, provocative and amusing – and of course entertaining’ said Mr Pugh – I hope these first few shows are setting me well on the way to achieving that goal and I’m already looking forward to announcing the full programme in all its glory in May’ Tickets for the early shows go on general sale on 9 March.
Entry details for the Holt Festival Art Prize, which attracts submissions from far and wide will be announced soon.
The 2015 Holt Festival runs from 19 – 26 July.

Dear Margaret,
My letter printed in issue 407 of The Independent obviously touched a raw nerve with Marie & Peter Johnston who, it would appear, do not have to endure the deprivations forced on local residents by the activities of Coastal MOT. Nor do I see what the EU and vegetables has to do with the problems created by Robin and his Merry Men. I do not wish to prolong the agony of the Johnstons, but I would point out that on Sunday 22 February, there were 19 vehicles parked outside the garage and I would guess less than half of them were roadworthy. If the owner were to get rid of these ‘wrecks’ he would have plenty of space to accommodate the vehicles of his customers and staff. I would add that I think Sheringham is a lovely place to live in and visit, but I do not think it is perfect, and I commend members of the Town Council who are working hard to improve the town’s appeal. Jack Broughton
Dear Margaret,
It’s with great sadness that I note the passing of our former county councillor Margaret English. For those who were not involved at the time it will be difficult to appreciate how much we owe to this lady. When my first son started school at the century old George Street primary school I thought little of it, only to return home after work one day to see on the local news the Rev Austin chairman of the governors, berating the state of the school particularly the pupils rife with worms. Horrified I investigated to find the new headmaster had fully expected to find he would be getting a nice new building, instead of which the lighting had been improved. So he now had a school built for about 250 now housing 500 in converted bike sheds etc. with outside toilets, leaking roofs, but wonderful lighting! On speaking to the relevant politician Mrs English I found there was a site planned on the recreation field next to Lawson Way, but this was well out of the way for most parents, and unfortunately had bi-annual sheep rights across it. Luckily an alternative site was found on a greenfield site next to the high school. So a meeting was convened of all the great and good at NCC at which it was revealed the site was on running sand which would need prohibitively expensive footings. Now Mrs English was at the best of times a daunting lady, now she was ballistic. Suffice it to say at a time of closure on public spending our school went from also ran, to top of capital expenditure in two years. This with core buildings and mobiles. What we actually got was the whole building, all the furniture and a library. Now we have one of the best primary schools not only in the county but in the country thanks to the staff who have inherited this building and thanks to Margaret English. Brian Wilson Woodland Rise, Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
On Sunday 22 February, I was walking along Sheringham High Street at about 10am. Outside Sainsburys in the middle of the pavement was a large pile of dog dirt. Coming towards me was a lady Police Community Support Officer.
Without more ado, she proceeded to produce rubber gloves and a plastic tray. She cleaned up the entire mess saying she didn’t want anyone to tread in it or wheel a pushchair through it. I did make a note of her name and number – and promptly lost the note! My apologies! But the force will know who she is.
This was an act of true community spirit as a Police Community Support Officer – a credit to our Police and I thank her. Yours sincerely, Margaret Gould

North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society counts all levels of ability among its members. On 18 February one of them, a top expert, showed what he had been doing since the 1970s.
Until 1996 Howard Denner worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food where he was Chief Scientist (Food) but he took early retirement and became a professional freelance press photographer, specialising in rock, blues and jazz music. However, he had always taken a passionate interest in photography as an amateur, giving lectures to camera clubs, and judging
competitions.
With great good humour, Howard told in his soft, still gently Welsh accent how his aim was to leave the viewer with the incentive to get out and take photographs. Most of the pictures that he showed were of people, some of them posed, but a lot candid, including some taken surreptitiously in a ‘red light’ district of the girls at their windows - until he was rather more than just warned off by the minder of one of them!
At the end of his talk, Howard showed some of his music photographs, mainly taken ‘live on stage’ at gigs. One of his early ones (before
becoming professional) was Kenny Ball, and there was Django Reinhardt, Ravi Shankar, Larry Adler, Madonna and many others.
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesday each month from 7.30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.
The link between Blakeney Point and Iraq! The distinguished local naturalist, Richard Porter, was the guest speaker at the February meeting of Holt and District Probus Club.
Richard has been reported as saying that one of the reasons he lives at Cley is to be near Blakeney Point, probably his ‘favourite place in Britain’. He talked about the Sandwich Terns and the Little Terns - the Point is an important breeding ground for these, as well as for many other species. He told of the brown hares which are common on the Point now, whereas the rabbits have all but gone; and how
important it had become to keep foxes away to protect the terns’ nesting sites.
In stark contrast - Iraq! The Mesopotamian Marshes are a vast expanse of reeds and open water twice the size of Norfolk, and are the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East. They support a number of species of global conservation concern, for example it supports the only breeding population of the globally endangered Basra reed warbler and holds the world's highest wintering numbers of the threatened marbled duck.
The charity ‘Nature Iraq’ is doing much to
Sheringham Independent 411 March 14th 2015
support and nurture the conservation of wildlife in Iraq, which is recovering somewhat after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
Richard has helped by running training schools for young biologists - which for a time were run in Syria, but of course that country is now also racked with conflict.
Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

Thread lift goes non-surgical

A unique non-surgical facelift from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic
We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.
So what has changed?
Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains - ‘three things’1. The procedure has changed from a surgical procedure to non-surgical. We do not need to use a knife anymore.
2. The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable ones-same as used in fillers. 3. The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.
How is the procedure performed?
No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones.
Sheringham Independent 411 March 14th 2015
Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area.
What is the recovery like?
After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days.
There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

John Hurst Exhibitions 2015
The Norfolk Wildlife Trust are holding a major solo exhibition by well-known local watercolourist, John Hurst to launch the new extended and eagerly anticipated visitor facilities at Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre.
Open from 1 – 27 April, 10am – 4.30pm daily, the exhibition showcases the artist’s work in support of conservation and features John’s vast coastal skies and fleeting weather patterns.
Called ‘New Ground. Cley and Beyond’, some paintings record Pope’s Marsh, the new reserve purchased by the Trust with the support of Heritage Lottery grants and public subscription.
John enjoys painting daily life on the coast too, hence detailed beach studies will be found juxtaposed with minimal marsh watercolours.
“I am fortunate to have the support of wonderful patrons from far and wide”, quoted John, who has recently completed a heritage book of original watercolours for Liam Botham, comprising of twenty moorland studies. He has also just completed a painting of the Tidal Transit fleet in Wells harbour. The exhibition culminates with a ‘live feed’ watercolour techniques demonstration in the new facilities on Saturday 25 April at 4.30pm in which John will show images of his work and paint whilst being filmed. The cost is £3.50 for Trust funds and it is advisable to book in advance by contacting Cley Marshes Centre on 01263 740008 as places are limited.
John’s 2015 shows, including a fine selection of his signed prints and books, continue in St Nicholas Church Room on Blakeney Quay from 2 – 8 May, Salthouse in August and Blakeney in September and October, all of which can be viewed in ‘The News Section’ of www.marshlandarts.co.uk

WANTED
Oddfellows Hall & Lifeboat Plain ~ Ideas for Possible Future Development
After almost a year, the Sheringham Shantymen Oddfellows Hall Management Group (we are all unpaid volunteers) are about to sign a lease with North Norfolk District Council to manage Oddfellows Hall for the foreseeable future. After a year’s trading including some financial investment by the Management Group we are confident we can manage the hall and develop its usage for the benefit of the wider community of Sheringham.
In order to acquire the lease, the Shantymen produced a detailed business plan which among other things, looked at the financial management and general maintenance issues of the hall but importantly expands on a variety of ideas which could be implemented to formalise the use of Lifeboat Plain and the Hall into a community hub (for lack of a better expression).
On Long Lease or Rental 2 Bedroom Property, Unfurnished
With Garden in Sheringham, Beeston Regis or West Runton Dog (Mature) Owners Parking Space or Garage Preferable Telephone 01263 825252 22
In order to develop these ideas further, we have met with some elected representatives, local businesses and residents and they have given us unanimous support to date. We would now like to meet with the wider community of Sheringham and seek their ideas and see if we can develop a way forward together.
Clearly, if you are in agreement ,there will be many hurdles to overcome, many practical considerations to take account of, a lot of people to be convinced and money to be raised; but you have to start somewhere.
You are therefore cordially invited to attend a public meeting at Sheringham High School on Wednesday 25 March at 7pm.
Please feel free to contact Brian Farrow (or Sharon) on 01263 824 311 or 07748 641707 if you have any queries and it would be really nice to get an idea of how many people will be attending – and if you cannot come - ask a friend.

Onwards and Upwards for Special Olympics Norfolk
The new Chair of Special Olympics Norfolk is predicting exciting times ahead for athletes across the county with learning disabilities. Nicola Fish, who hails from Norwich, has taken over the reigns following the retirement after four years of previous chair Richard Sanders.
She commented "Richard has been an outstanding leader for Special Olympics Norfolk and I'm delighted he'll continue to be involved in other areas with the organisation. As the parent of a daughter with learning difficulties, I am delighted to take on the position of chair of the organisation. I am part of a great and committed
team of people that are passionate about providing sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. "My aims, going forward, are to develop our existing sports clubs across the county and look to offer more opportunities for competition as well as working in partnership with existing mainstream sports groups to widen the choice of sports offered by Special Olympics Norfolk.
“We have some great Special Olympics athletes within Norfolk, some of whom will be representing the county in national competitions over the next 12 months and possibly Great Britain so it is an exciting time for all of us," added Nicola.
Special Olympics Norfolk runs a range of sports for people with intellectual disability across the county, including skiing, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, tennis, cricket and boccia.

Youth services at AWF receive funding for another year!
Cromer based charity About With Friends are delighted to have their Short Break Activities contract for children and young people in Norfolk extended for a fifth year! This means we can continue to offer a great service to young people with a learning disability and their families. For the under 18s we offer social activities during the evenings, weekends and school and college holidays. We offer a whole variety of activities from discos to theme parks; shopping trips and special events; sailing and train trips. In fact, we offer our young people exactly the same sort of experiences their mainstream peers enjoy. We are very much driven by what our members want and if they ask for something we do our best to provide it.
We have supported over 80 young people over the years and are pleased we can continue our activities for another year –
and will be tendering for another long term contract with Children’s Services when the opportunity arises.
We have received great feedback from parents, members and other professionals for the flexible exciting programme we offer – our service was described by the Contract Review Group, made up of commissioners, parents and the Children with Disabilities team, as ‘unique ‘ and that we ‘make the impossible a reality for disabled young people’.
Our services are: 9-12s - Friday evening youth club in Cromer - referrals can be from any
interested party with a disabled child.

Gallery Plus Picture Framing
As well as having our unique, open and airy exhibition space, did you know that we also undertake bespoke picture framing?
With our expert advice and friendly guidance, we can transform your paintings, prints, photographs, and more, in our on-site framing workshop.
Here's a 'before and after'; this beautiful oil painting was framed in a very traditional manner, with a gold slip and a cloth slip, and finished in a dark wood frame, all of which made it feel rather enclosed and overpowered. We changed it for a more complimentary and lighter-coloured frame and, as a result, the whole painting has come alive!
A wide range of moulding and mount boards are held in stock and we always use conservation standard materials. Pop in and see us with your items for framing for a no-obligation quote.

Sheringham Ladies Association
At our 24 February meeting Mrs Emily Philo gave us memories of her days with the Salvation Army and, recalling some of the amusing moments of her long career, she kept us entertained all the evening!
Rising through the ranks she greatly enjoyed her time responsible for the the children’s home. She advised us never to take a party of children to the zoo as she and her assistants had! On the way home in the coach full of children she was aware of a flurry of feathers on the back seat - upon investigation she discovered that a penguin had been smuggled out of the zoo! It was duly returned!
The nativity presented by the children one year certainly had a surprising addition. Mary and Joseph approaching the innkeeper asked the usual question "have you any room" to which the innkeeper replied "no" whereupon Joseph turned to Mary and said "there you are, I told you we should have booked".
Emily also worked in an old people’s home where she was called to examine an elderly lady who appeared to have suffered a stroke - her jaw was hanging down one side, so an ambulance was called. Emerging from the room the ambulance crew reported no stroke but the lady shared a bedroom and had unfortunately put her roommate's teeth in by mistake!
Of course, there were sad moments when children were brought to the home and one little boy kept asking Emily if she loved him and she reassured him that she loved him and all the other children, but "do you love ME" he asked over and over again and eventually Emily said she did - "then you can adopt me" he said. Thank you Emily - laughter is the best medicine but there was also plenty of food for thought What a fulfilling career you had!
Our future meetings are as follows: 24 March - The work of the Norfolk Hospice – Speaker Lindsey Atkin - 7.45pm for 8pm 14 April - The Harmony Singers 7.45pm for 8pm 28 April - "Continuing his ramblings" – Speaker Mike Crowe 7.45pm for 8pm 5 May - Committee Meeting 7.30pm

Now is the Time of Year…
…when the Brass Band stirs from its post-Christmas hibernation to leisurely contemplate what airs and melodies it will perform for its followers in the forthcoming seasons.
What a load of codswallop! Just two weeks off over the Christmas period, that is all members of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band get.
At the beginning of January the musicians return to their many pieces of festive music - carols, sleigh ride jingles, novelty numbers, songs about snow (that pretty, fluffy white stuff that flutters from the sky and then deteriorates into a horrible grey slurry) to the Band librarian - and in return receive a generous wad of parts which include a variety of compositions such as marches, traditional airs, popular melodies and well known tunes from film and stage. Then the Band continues its regular Thursday practices, honing its performing skills in preparation for a first appearance in March.
Pop to the Band’s web site www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com where you will discover a great deal of information, including where the Band will be appearing throughout the year - it is updated as soon as further engagements come along.
However, a particularly special occasion worth marking on your calendar is the Band’s Open Day on Saturday 11 April to be held at St Peter’s Church Hall, Sheringham. From 10am you can drop in to chat to members of the band over a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. Be our guest. Learn something of the Band’s history. Have a ‘blow’ of a brass instrument, who knows you might be surprised at your undiscovered skill, and even consider how you can join our ranks. Age is not an issue, the youngest member is ten years old, and the oldest is … well lets just say he has had a bus pass for some years.
But hold on, the day doesn’t end there. The band will be playing a variety of musical pieces that evening at a Concert in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham from 7.30pm. There is no admission charge, just make a small financial contribution as you leave. We look forward to seeing you. Sheringham Independent 411 March 14th 2015

North Norfolk Wheelers Cycling Club Black Bikes sponsors North Norfolk Wheelers CC Time Trials Series.
Independent Sheringham bike shop Black Bikes is sponsoring this year’s time trials series organised by North Norfolk Wheelers Cycling Club.
The club is running a full program of time trials this season racing over 10, 15, 18.5 and 25 miles. These events are held on the public roads around Sheringham and Holt at quieter times of the day. The events are properly marshalled and local police are fully appraised. Black Bikes is helping the club with competition numbers and signs.
Events are open to guests as well as members of the Club. North Norfolk Wheelers Club Secretary, Nigel Walsh, said “Time trials are pretty straight forward - it’s just about how fast you can ride around a course. You race yourself and not other riders. Each rider is started a minute apart and the aim is to better your best
time at that distance. The event is strangely addictive and although no special equipment is required riders often to go to extreme lengths to find those extra seconds off their times. Odd-looking skin-suits and hats and specialist bikes are not uncommon but anybody can come along and have a go using a standard road bike. You can even bring your old mountain bike along if you’re feeling extremely fit! The events are open to both sexes and all ages.”
Black Bikes owner, Greg Saunders, said “I see plenty of the club members in my shop and I’m pleased offer North Norfolk Wheelers support with their time trials series. At Black Bikes we deal with everything from basic budget bikes to specialist carbon fibre racers. Everybody involved with time trialling wants to go that little bit faster and is always seeking a few seconds advantage from their bike. We love to help them but the real truth is that the most important part in going faster is the rider and

not the machine!”
Time trialling is organized nationally by the CTT (Cycling Time Trials) and has taken part on British roads since the early 1920s. Britain has a strong tradition in this event and Bradley Wiggins is the current World Champion. Aerodynamics play a big part at the serious end of the sport and Britain’s Formula 1 skills, for example, cross-over perfectly into designing the ultimate bike.
Dates and times for the North Norfolk Wheelers events can be found on their web site www.nnwheelers.co.uk
Everyone is welcome.
