Thumbs up for 'Birdseye' Wagon Restoration
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
Volunteers of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) have successfully completed the restoration of a unique 'Birdseye' wagon, believed to be the only one in the country.
The recently overhauled wagon was launched over North Norfolk Railway's recent Spring Steam Gala and will now be a permanent addition to the Railway's demonstration freight train.
To celebrate the launch, the NNR volunteer Biz Bizzel dressed up as Captain Birdseye to launch the vehicle into traffic.
The wagon is just the latest in a string of restorations funded by the 'Joint Heritage Coach Fund', which restores carriages and wagons with unique East Anglian history to working order.
Nigel Scarlett, who spearheaded the project said “It turned out to be a bigger project than anticipated. We ended up making the container entirely from scratch, using as many salvaged bits from the original as possible.”

Thumbs up for 'Birdseye' Wagon Restoration Continued from front cover...
He added “The highlight has been seeing it in traffic over the Steam Gala weekend. The reaction from visitors and passengers was great.
Getting Biz dressed up as Captain Birdseye was the icing on the cake.”
A conscious decision was made to paint the container in Birdseye colours because of the rich history it represented. Whilst coal was king in the Midlands and the North East, in East Anglia, agricultural produce and latterly fish were the moneymakers. Millions of tonnes of fish were transported by rail overnight from the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft to markets in London and further afield. Birdseye still operate a factory at Ness Point in Lowestoft.
Birdseye were approached to sponsor the wagon, but no response was received.
The wagon is a 'Conflat' type (No.B502824) and the container a British Railways 'AF' (No.AF65970B) type. The 'Conflat' was restored in 2011 and the container was purchased from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 2014.
Sheringham History Group
On Wednesday evening 4 March, Sheringham History Group heard a talk about the Norfolk dialect, entitled ‘Memoirs of a Norfolk Dumpling’.
The speaker was Mary Gurteen, aka 'Dumpling', born in Cawston as were many of her ancestors.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary dumplings or dumplins are a type of paste or dough, originally attributed to Norfolk. The word is used to characterise a resident of these parts and may be from the Norse word dumpe, to drop suddenly.
Mrs. Gurteen related stories of her own childhood in Norfolk, told in such a way you could picture what it was like in the '50s. These were illustrated with readings from Boy John Letters by Sidney Grapes spoken in Norfolk dialect. When the often humorous stories about grandfar were told, it seemed as if it was about her own family or grandfather. The Boy John Letters were originally published in the EDP.
Mary Gurteen's talk was a very relaxing, funny, entertaining way to introduce and preserve the Norfolk dialect that many people believe is dying out. If you have an opportunity to hear her again don't miss it. It is interesting to study the local origins of words and there is a group called FOND, Friends of Norfolk Dialect, with Peter Trudgel as President. The website is www.norfolkdialect.com.

They seek the help of organisation and experts in building up an archive of literature and sound recordings. Their aim is to record as many of our county's traditional words as possible, together with sayings, stories and songs. The sound archive is located at the Norfolk Record Office.
a pub full of rustic style & character set in the charming village of West Runton
If you enjoyed last summer’s concert featuring Martin Bartlett and friends, you will certainly remember Filip Cwizewicz, the young violinist who played with such skill and intensity. We are delighted that Filip and his elder brother Michal will be giving a concert on 16 May at St Andrew’s Church, Holt at 6.30pm. This promises to be a wonderful evening as Filip and Michal’s programme include their own musical arrangements of Polish folk music as well as more traditional pieces. Both musicians have won national and international awards and have performed with highly regarded orchestras and artists.

A Fond Farewell for Judy Knights at North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society said a fond ‘goodbye’ to Judy Knights at their meeting on 4 March.
Judy has been a key member of the club for some years past, serving on the Committee (in recent times as Club Secretary) and having achieved recognition along the way from the Royal Photographic Society and from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, it has been no surprise that she has won many of the club’s competitions.
charismatic judges, Jim Hartje from Peterborough, in the Open Competition, Judy’s print ’Going Down’ was a worthy winner. A spiral staircase looking a bit like a snail shell if it were not for the chap going down the stairs, it beat Hugh Barton’s ’Red Squirrel on Stump’ into second place, followed by Diana Knight with ’On the Lookout’.
Just before moving from Sheringham to be closer to her family, Judy made her point by winning her last competition.
Judged by one of the club’s familiar and

The set subject for the evening was a panel of three prints - which calls for three pictures with some relationship. The winner in this was Lizzie Wallis’s ’In for the

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
With Easter just a week or so away we are expecting a busy time and are looking forward to serving some of the many visitors to Overstrand who return to the village each year for the Easter break. We are busy planning our summer menus at present and thinking ahead to our ‘Strictly Norfolk Week’ and ‘Beer Festivals’ both of which are scheduled for later in the year. In the meantime we are still offering our great value traditional Sunday Roast and are for a little while longer continuing with our Wednesday ‘Speciality Food Night’s including Italian, Steak and Fish. Don’t forget that we have five Real Ales and a selection of Lagers and a great wine list to compliment our food. Plus a range of coffee and teas and soft drinks which now the weather is getting a little warmer can be enjoyed in our garden. Come and see us soon and buy a ticket on your great Easter Draw with Easter Eggs and Soft Toys to be won. Have a good Easter and we hope to see you at the White
Horse very soon. Full details can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk

JAZZ DATES
The Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band’s popular monthly events at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, continue to draw enthusiastic audiences. The gigs are usually held on the first Sunday of the month but in April and May they will move to the second Sunday, ie 12 April and 10 May. We can also tell you that the band will perform at The Crown Inn, Banningham, on Easter Monday, 6 April. All gigs start at 1.30 p.m. Admission is free and you can simply drop in for a drink and enjoy the music at either venue but if you would like a table for lunch it is essential to book. The telephone number for The Crown is 01263 733534 and The Goat is 01692 538600. We are also pleased to tell you that Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) continues to play to capacity audiences and Phil Brooke, one of the region’s finest guitarists, takes centre stage on Sunday 19 April at 7.30pm. Phil is highly regarded by other musicians. He is comfortable playing a variety of styles and he will re-visit the music of some of the exponents of the guitar in jazz trios. People such as Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel with Oscar Peterson, Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney with Red Norvo and Oscar Moore with Nat Cole. He will be accompanied by two musicians who are no strangers to The Hub and are also amongst the best in their field, Simon Brown on piano and Ivars Galenieks on double bass. A highly talented trio. Tickets are £8 from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

North Norfolk is all set for an egg-citing Easter of fun activities
For the best egg-citing Easter fun, North Norfolk is the place to be, with a bumper activity programme for all the family to enjoy during the Easter holiday period.
North Norfolk District Council has organised 50 sessions covering 29 different sports and activities for the whole family to enjoy across all three community sports centres in the district.
Alongside this, there are also some special countryside events taking place at Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, Bacton Woods and Pretty Corner Woods.
Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “We are confident that with a host of activities to choose from, there really is something for everyone to get involved with and enjoy this Easter. The programme has been developed to enable individuals from across the district to take part in a wide variety of recreational activities. Keep your eyes peeled for the Easter bunny, who will be hopping in to some of the activities to deliver some delicious treats.
The activities will take place across the district from Monday 30 March to Thursday 9 April 2015. Among the events on offer are mix of traditional sports such as netball, trampolining along with more adventurous activities such as rifle shooting and KMX Go Kart Racing.
Programme guides have been distributed to schools in the district and are available from most council facilities. For further information including details on how to book or to receive a copy of the programme guide, contact Colin on 07917834960 for the sports activities or for the countryside events contact Annie on 07920576634. To download a copy please visit: www.northnorfolk.org/sports
Early booking is highly recommended for the sports activities as spaces are strictly limited and are selling out fast. However, no booking is required for the countryside events, just turn up with your family and friends!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Domino, Solitaire and Octopussy, the kittens mentioned last time, have now been blood tested and we are at present waiting for the results to come back. We will advise you of the result in the next issue.
If you include the cats that arrived last year, but were still with us in January, we have had 71 cats in care this year, 35 of which have found loving new homes. 36 of the total of 71 were signed over to Cats’ Protection by someone who was not their owner but was concerned for their welfare.
We are aware from their history that some of these did indeed originally have homes but for whatever reason their owners had abandoned them. This was the situation with a colony we dealt with last year where the owner of the adult cats, none of which had been neutered, were left when the people moved. In another instance, a mother cat had taken up residence on a car park where cats were being fed regularly by a member of the public. It is easy in these circumstances to identify the cats as
being genuine strays and not just one of those that likes to wander.
When a cat turns up in someone’s garden it is essential to make appropriate checks to ensure that there is not an owner in the neighbourhood and that we are not “stealing” their pet. This is because, in law, a cat is regarded as being the ‘property’ of the owner and to take it would be regarded as theft in the same way as any other property. Obviously, if the cat is in danger or requires attention we can take it in if we have the room, without making the necessary checks. In these instances we would hope the

owner, if there is one, would contact us to enquire whether or not their cat has been handed in. We would not attempt to re-home the cat straightaway in case it had an owner. We have in the past had cats brought to us as they look quite frail, only to find that the cat is actually well loved and receiving attention for a medical condition from their vet.
Generally speaking, efforts and checks always need to be made to make sure the cat is a stray. Enquiries to the local vets, checking with all the neighbours and putting a paper collar on the cat are the usual ways to do this and are very often successful. It can be as simple as a recent case where the cat had moved to the area and had lost its bearings or, in another instance, where the cat liked to wander but still went home regularly. However, by making these checks we can identify the genuine strays (like Joe who was mentioned last time). Whatever the circumstances, when dealing with strays, we always hold them for a short while just to make sure there is no owner out there.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Dear Margaret,
Are you interested in supporting people with a visual impairment in your community? Guide Dogs is searching for a key volunteer to complete their newly formed Cromer and Sheringham supporter group.
Daniel Ingram from Guide Dogs explains “The Banker role is hugely rewarding. Not only do you know you are helping make a positive difference to the lives of people in your local area, it is also a great way to meet others in your community, use existing skills or build new ones. If you enjoy keeping things organised this role will suit you. ”
You will play the important role of maintaining accurate records of funds raised and ensuring they are banked. You will also have the chance to help out at local events to be decided by the group such as social evenings, quiz nights, collections, and selling Guide Dogs items.
More than 180,000 people in the UK rarely leave home alone due to being blind or partially sighted. Guide Dogs is committed to enabling people who are blind or partially sighted to get out and about on their own terms. This group will raise funds and awareness to make this a reality.
Sue Dunn, Banker for a Guide Dogs group in Suffolk got involved when her husband lost his sight “I felt a need to do something due to the amount of money needed to provide a guide dog. I saw information regarding the local Guide Dogs group in the local paper and knew I could help. I feel a great satisfaction from knowing that I am making a difference to people’s lives. I’ve also had the chance to meet people who have similar interests to me and build community spirit in my local area.”
If you are interested in the role or joining the new group; contact Daniel on daniel.ingram@guidedogs.org.uk or 0118 983 8741. Visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/ volunteer for more information.

I’m sure it is a relief to Sheringham residents to learn that the local Police will be strengthened by two new members, and that my old school-friend, Constable Meikle (alias Graveling), is coming out of retirement. Not only have you printed a photo of him on page 14, but also I was thrilled to see a strip of four more snaps of John on Page 21, though I suspect the latter were taken when he was in the Sixth Form! May the Force be with you John! Reminds me of the days when we had a resident Inspector in the police house on Weybourne road. His name was Inspector Bocking, which is why that house, to this day, is known as Bockingham Palace! Yours sincerely, Tom Jump, Regis Avenue

The news that the 4290 surveys sent to Sheringham residents resulted in only 230 returns saying there were parking problems in the town speaks volumes. The fact that almost 95% of those surveyed did not respond leads me to assume that they do not think that there is a major problem with parking in Sheringham. Of the 1233 returns that were made over 71% were not in favour of the permit and pay and display on street parking proposals made by Norfolk County Council. It is interesting to compare the survey response to that of the petition set up by SPAG (Sheringham Parking Action Group) asking for signatures if people were against the introduction of on street pay and display throughout the town. Almost 4000 signatures were collected from on-line and just a number of businesses in the town where the petition was available. Bearing in mind that people were not obliged to sign, the majority of the households in Sheringham have sent a clear message to the County Council that their on street pay and display parking part of the proposal is definitely not wanted. It may be that a small number of people are in favour of limited permit parking in certain hot spots, but as the Council's proposal needs both parking schemes operating to be financially viable, it is obvious that the proposed scheme is not sustainable if the views of Sheringham's residents are to be taken into account. It should be remembered that the proposed scheme is only financially viable because the Council will need to rely on fines for parking violations to make a profit. Incidentally, it is worth noting that the Deregulation Bill that is expected to become law in April reminds Councils that they should not profit from any sort of parking enforcement. I therefore expect that if the wishes of the vast majority Sheringham's residents and visitors are not to be ignored but listened to, and with the benefit of the new laws, the Norfolk County Council's parking plans for using Sheringham as a cash cow are dead in the water. Bob Smith, Sheringham

Sheringham to Yarmouth – An Easterly Viewpoint
East Norfolk through the eyes of eight local painters – including six members of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer has teamed up with eight artists – most of them members of the distinguished East Anglian Group of Marine Artists – for its most ambitious exhibition yet.
evokes breaking waves, and Su Chisnell, a seasoned sailor whose work captres the grace and dynamism of yachts. Joining Jones and Chisnell in ‘Sheringham to Yarmouth An Easterly Viewpoint’ are six members of EAGMA: Richard Dack, Paul Darley, Andrew King, Patrick Boswell, Raymond Leech and Jane Cort. Their eminence in their chosen artistic field is affirmed by the initials after their names, such as RSMA (Royal Society of Marine Artists) and ROI (Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI).
From 27th March 2015 to 21st April, ‘Sheringham to Yarmouth - An Easterly Viewpoint’ will show some 40 paintings, focusing on the Eastern corner of Norfolk, from Sheringham to Yarmouth, and including the Norfolk Broads. This breezy, rural area, with its sometimes austere landscape, has long attracted and fascinated artists, particularly for its light, which Lowestoft-born Richard Dack, Chairman of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists (EAGMA), describes as “ethereal, shifting and delicate, different to anywhere else in the UK”.
“The Gallery Norfolk has always had a focus on the sea and nature,” says Polly Miller, who established the gallery in 2012. “We’ve shown work by established Norfolk painters and also commissioned other well-known names to give us their particular take on the coastline. As it happens, The Gallery Norfolk is one of the most
The idea for the exhibition grew from a discussion that Polly Miller, who runs The Gallery Norfolk, had with two marine artists whose paintings have become identified with the gallery: Gareth Jones, whose imagery

easterly galleries on the North Norfolk coast, so we decided to look east with this exhibition to a part of the county that is every bit as beautiful as the perhaps more picturesque areas to the west. Gareth Jones and Su Chisnell are already part of the Gallery Norfolk family, and I am delighted to welcome six EAGMA artists to Church Street in Cromer. As some of the finest marine artists in East Anglia, they are much in demand from galleries around East Anglia and around the country, so it is an honour to have them here for this exhibition.”

Sheringham Town Council Sheringham Community Awards
The Sheringham Community Awards scheme, set up to recognise the achievement and effort of individuals or groups for their work in enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors to Sheringham, is now in it’s third year. A Community Award is the Council’s way of publicly honouring a group or individual whose work goes largely unrecognised and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large.
The Mayor of Sheringham, Cllr Tricia Brooks, presented the awards at the Annual Town Meeting held at the Community Centre in Sheringham on Monday 2nd March 2015. Please find below details of recipients of the Sheringham Community Awards along with reasons for their nominations for the year ending 31st December 2014. Joan Thame Joan has worked tirelessly for Sheringham in Bloom for many years, being the Chair for the last
eight years. She has not only been “hands on” with planting but has organised the group and dealt with entering into the Anglia in Bloom competition, which entailed a great deal of work. More recently she has been responsible for obtaining sponsorship for Sheringham in Bloom.
Brenda Smith Brenda’s exceptional dedication and determination in persuading a vast number of organisations and businesses to become Fairtrade users and suppliers has resulted in Sheringham becoming a Fairtrade Town at the first attempt, almost an unprecedented achievement.
Mike Crowe Mike has worked tirelessly for Sheringham for nearly forty years involved with many things including: the Little Theatre, the Carnival, the Christmas Lights and the “40s” weekend. Mike has served the community well over many years.
MPI Workboats providing vessels at Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm
Graham and Wendy Austin In their time in Sheringham they have committed themselves to many aspects of local life including, RNLI, The Mo, Little Theatre, Morris Dancing and the Allotment Site on Weybourne Road. They give a hundred percent to anything they become involved with and Sheringham is fortunate to have such exceptional people.
Avril Duke-Miller Avril has worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Town. Sheringham Enhancement Group managed to create and fund a memorial to the people who worked on Beeston Hill during the war. Avril and her group have also worked on many projects including toilets, pedestrianisation and car parking.
The Royal British Legion The British Legion have contributed so much to the Town during this year being the anniversary of World War 1. The “Poppy Appeal” this year has raised more money than other years and due to the dedication of Members many ex-servicemen and women in the area are supported.
The Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm has awarded a contract to MPI Workboats to supply three passenger transfer vessels [PTVs] and crews to transport its turbine technicians into the wind farm field to carry out the maintenance work which is essential to its the efficient operation.
Three MPI vessels will shortly arrived at the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm (Image courtesy of MPI)
The vessels, which will operate from the Outer Harbour at Wells-nextthe-Sea in North Norfolk, are each capable of carrying 12 passengers, 3 crew members and two 10 foot equipment containers. The company operates a fleet of purpose-built aluminium catamarans, and MPI Snowball, which has already arrived in Wells-next-the-Sea, will be joined by MPI Altisidora in April 2015 and MPI Lucinda in June 2015.
Commenting on the award of this charter contract to MPI Workboats, Bjørn Mo Østgren, the General Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, said: "MPI Workboats worked on the Sheringham Shoal site during the construction phase of the wind farm, and we are pleased to welcome the company back to work with us in our O&M phase." Dear Margaret
Selbrigg Wind Turbine
Do you remember when it used to snow in Norfolk? I don’t mean the dustings we get nowadays, (that still seems to produce chaos); I mean the proper deep snow that fell overnight which produced great drifts and snow that used to slowly melt away over weeks, often remaining on the verges of roads sometimes until late April. If you’re over 45 I guess you do, much less than this I doubt it. So think about it - what has happened in that period sums up climate change - for me at least; what is it going to be like for the next generation and the one after that…
I’ve been asked why do it? Basically my view is because we all need to tread lightly on this planet, some ‘buy now pay later’ may disagree. I feel, why should I expect our grandchildren to take the environmental rap for our action or in-actions today, why should anyone? Why expect someone else to invest in clean green energy if I have the site, which is most suitable – surely that would be a NIMBY approach.
I completely understand that some people don’t like the look of wind turbines, and those sited badly do the pro-wind supporters great harm. Others quite like their gentle giantness. Unfortunately, a lot of myth and hearsay is recounted as gospel and that understandably worries people. I would suggest people consider the turbines at Swaffham – the one with the viewing platform by Waitrose is 100m to the top of the blade tip. My proposed turbine is 78m to the tip, sited in Hempstead Parish near to the Bodham boundary. Concerns that have been voiced about my proposed turbine include effect on:-
Health and noise: At Swaffham homes have actually been built closer to the turbine since it was erected and there is no evidence from GPs or reports in the EDP of abnormal sleeplessness. This is because modern turbines are quiet, where confusion occurs is that 1st generation turbines were noisy; not so now. Indeed Kings Lynn hospital begin construction this month of a very similar sized turbine to that I propose, next to the hospital, - I don’t expect they want to harm their patients.
Tourism: There are lots of surveys and evidence about this, I suspect that results depend how questions are positioned. Personally I have never looked to see whether a holiday destination has wind turbines nearby or not, but I dare say someone somewhere just may have. With 88 turbines offshore at Sheringham I suspect those staying away already are; a single onshore turbine won’t change visitors intentions. Indeed Swaffham’s turbine is an attraction. What is true and evidenced is that both Cornwall and Scotland that have lots of turbines both on and off shore continue to report increases in visitor numbers.
Precedent: Some fear that my turbine will open the flood gates for many more. There are two reasons I don’t think this will happen- The Ministry of Defence will only permit 10 turbines within a 10 Square Nautical Mile radius – There are 8 of varying sizes already recorded and built. Mine would be the 10th the difference being the ‘slot’ for the possible turbine at Pond Farm. Secondly the National Grid locally is reaching capacity, without major capital investment no further major Solar or Wind installations will get sufficient connection to the grid. Should any proposal overcome the first hurdle the second is likely to make any business case uneconomic.
Wildlife: Great care has been take to select a turbine that blades swipe is above the flight path of bats but below that of migrating birds. A full independent ecological assessment has been conducted that supports the choice and location of this turbine. A shorter turbine with fast blades could kill bats. The RSPB at Sandy have recently applied and had granted permission for a 100m turbine to be constructed, they too completed a similar ecological assessment, and would not expect bird casualties.
Landscape: Selbrigg is well screened, particularly between Holt and the end of High Kelling, it would be unrealistic to say you can erect a 78m structure and it be invisible, but from High Kelling and Hempstead villages it pretty much will be. It will be more prominent further away and from Baconsthorpe. It would be set on land 64m above sea level, not astride the Cromer Ridge which is about 90m above sea level. The skyline is already dominated by Baconsthorpe water tower sited 80m above sea level and the two masts at West Beckham.
Broadband and TV: Again a full assessment has been undertaken and detailed in the planning application. Again a great many sites are ruled out because of microwave links that run over them. There are no microwave links in the vicinity of this proposed turbine. A very few homes directly sited in line between the TV transmitter masts the turbine (including my own) could be affected. This is usual with all wind turbines and the council ensure homes are not affected by imposing a condition to say alternative TV provision must be provided – and this is usually done by Satellite, free of charge for any home affected. I live here too, and give an absolute guarantee of not depriving anyone of TV.
As is usual with major planning application Community Benefits are included. Over £4500 per year index linked split between Hempstead PC / Holt Youth Project / Parish news /Toadwatch and further restoration of Selbrigg pond where fishing will continue to be free to locals. 1 parish cause; 2 people centric and 1 environmental, ALL LOCAL. This amount is almost double the Renewable UK’s expectation, and is because I am completing the turbine development myself, and whilst it needs to make economic sense for funding, because it is on land I own and don’t have to acquire I can be more generous than a ‘windfarm developer’ might be.
With climate change we should all be responsible and play our part individually and collectively. According to what each can reasonably do, for some that may be improved insulation or solar on a roof, for me I feel as I have a good site with above average wind speeds away from people’s homes, so there are no noise, or shadow flicker issues; a turbine can make good sense, but don’t let this stop you from doing your bit too!
In a changing world, we still need to keep the lights on, and so a medium sized wind turbine that will produce enough electricity for 343 homes makes a modest but sustained contribution. Clean green energy, no pollution, no radiation legacy for our future generations, no global warming. Preserving fossil fuels to last longer.
If you can, please support this single medium sized turbine application but I would encourage everyone to have their say. A quick link to the council website is www.tinyurl.com/selbriggturbine. If you would like more information or a computer CD of the whole application please contact me selbrigg@gmail.com or my agents Farmwind on 0845 567 1212 or view the ‘documents’ section on NNDC’s website or in person at their offices.

WI Centenary with a very special performance by the Norfolk Belles.
The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. Since then, the organisation has grown to become the largest women's voluntary organisation in the UK with over 212,000 Members. It was set up to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation; education and the sharing of skills have always been at the heart of the WI and this remains true today.
The Norfolk Federation itself has 165 WIs with over 5000 members and continues to grow. In the run up to the centenary celebrations, the national federation launched a ‘Singing for Joy’ competition for all WI members and so the Norfolk Belles were formed. The choir has approximately 25 members led by professional musical director Margaret Collingwood. The singers come from across the county, some were novices to begin with, others have been singing for years and they are ably accompanied by Matthew Bond. Practising 2-3 times a month, the choir is looking forward to some big performances in 2015, including joining the orchestra on stage at Last Night of the Blickling Proms to sing ‘Jerusalem’.
Lisa Ward from organisers, Revival Productions said “We are delighted that the Norfolk Belles have agreed to perform for us as ‘Jerusalem’ has a special significance for the WI and it’s one of the songs that attracts a very patriotic

Sally Paramour, a member of the Norfolk Belles and past Chairman of the Norfolk Federation said “It’s been great fun singing with the Norfolk Belles. We all enjoy getting together for rehearsals, either here at our headquarters in All Saints Green or at the Methodist Church in Chapelfield, and we’re really looking forward to joining the orchestra on stage at the Blickling Proms, it should be a great evening.
‘Jerusalem’ was taken up as the WI’s anthem after the copyright was passed on by the suffragette movement in 1928, after they had achieved their ambitions and women won the right to vote. Many WI meetings through the years have opened with members singing the anthem.
Thereis plenty to celebrate so come and join the party; the concert will be led by conductor Roderick Dunk with the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra. As well as having free parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their flags, picnics and wine, dress for the occasion if they so wish and soak up the atmosphere with friends.
Those not wishing to bring their own picnics have the option to order food & drink in advance. H G Graves will be providing a delicious hog roast and Carluccio’s will be supplying all the hampers and there will also be a bar on-site.
So, don’t miss out! Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) and all event details are available at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts of up to 20% are also available.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER BARNHAVEN PRIMULAS
Every garden centre, superstore and market stall is currently full of primroses, polyanthus and primroses in their many forms. The appearance of trays of these highly coloured plants is a sure sign that we are leaving winter behind us. Every year the flowers seem to get bigger and the colours brighter. These plants certainly make an impact when planted in tubs or other containers but flowers with more subtle gradations of colour, and which more closely resemble the wild species from which they derive, are perhaps better choices for planting in the garden borders.
I have always been a great admirer of the Barnhaven Primroses originated by Mrs Florence Bellis (1906-87) in Oregon, USA , who dedicated years of work to hybridising these flowers. Mrs Bellis managed to produce plants in a rainbow of colours whilst retaining the richness of scent and the traditional primrose charms and elegance. Hardy in cold climates, winter blooming in mild these primroses bring a thrill, when after a grey winter, the fresh green leaves unfurl, the fat buds rise from the crown and the flowers open. Clean, brilliant, sparkling colour and soft, luxurious shades that fill the surrounding air with scent that reminds some of violets, pansies and freesias.
The full story of the work of Florence Bellis is told in the latest edition of the RHS magazine ‘The Garden’ where there are also many pages
of photographs of her wonderful creations but her story is an intriguing one which bears some repetition here. She began her work in the 1930s, in the depths of the Great Depression. She moved into a derelict barn on a sloping site alongside Johnson Creek in Gresham near Portland, Oregon naming her new home Barnhaven as she felt safe there. There was no electricity, just kerosene lamps. Legend has it that in 1935 she spent her last five dollars on packets of seeds from Suttons Seeds in England, including Munstead strain (developed by Gertrude Jekyll) and two of Sutton’ reds. From this beginning she produced ranges of plants such as ‘Grand Canyon – brilliant coppers, coffee, all spice – true browns of heavy crepe or velvet substance and often gold edged’ and ‘Indian Reds – clean, flaming scarlet, orient red, vermillion, crimson – stunning colours, violent as war paint’.
I have just managed to buy a second hand copy of her book ‘Gardening and Beyond’ and in it she describes how, on a spring day at Barnhaven, ‘I sat on a footbridge over a creek and looked with stars in my eyes, at my first primroses blooming along its banks under the catkined alders’.
her to ‘hang up her shovel and her hoe’. For the first time in over 30 years, the pollinating sheds at Barnhaven fell empty.
However she decided to return her stock to England and she chose a couple who ran a nursery in Kendal, Westmoreland to continue her work. The nursery has changed hands several times since then and currently much of the supply of Barnhaven seeds and plants comes from Brittany. (www.barnhaven.com)
Primroses are very hardy and enjoy a situation under deciduous shrubs and trees, that give them full sun in winter and cool, summer shade. They prefer good soil that does not dry out in summer. Splitting plants every three or four years keeps them vigorous. You can divide immediately after flowering or in the autumn.
The work of Mrs Bellis and the other hybridisers have brought us a wonderful array of plants to brighten our spring gardens and it is worth looking beyond the mass displays in the various garden outlets for these more unusual primroses. Bob Wilkinson

Lucy’s Handpicked Home
Lucy’s Handpicked Home is a new home interiors and gift shop opening at Alby Crafts and Gardens located on the A140 between Alysham and Cromer. It is a shop with a differenc. The shop is divided into ‘rooms’ creating a real home setting, and an inspirational backdrop for the handpicked items. The shop is an eclectic mix of old and new furniture, home furnishings and those special gifts.
Lucy developed the concept for the shop after managing several house renovations. She felt there was a real opening for a home interiors and gift shop focusing on selecting items that are a bit different. The ideal space became available at Alby Crafts and Gardens offering not only the 22
space, but a real atmosphere alongside skilled crafts people, interesting shops and a fantastic Tearoom. Lucy’s Handpicked Home centres round the idea of finding individual items and displaying them in an inspirational environment. The shop will have an extensive collection of products from furniture, cushions, china and candles to children’s toys, pyjamas and accessories. The products for the shop are British and handmade where possible and always from fair trade companies.
The shop Grand Opening is on 28 March, there will be 20% off everything, free face painting for children and demonstrations by local artists including Keith Nash and Bob Payne.

Crayford & Abbs Support Red Nose Day
Crayford and Abbs Nissan at Bodham are pleased to have raised £250 for Red Nose Day earlier this month.
The money was raised by offering a car wash with donations to Red Nose Day.
In conjunction with North Norfolk Radio, we also offered Woodfields School in Sheringham free face painting to three of their classes – this was much appreciated by the pupils and fun was had by all. Nicki from NNR was superb and made a lot of very happy faces come alive!

CROMER NEEDS A NALU BEAD!
Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ company Nalu Beads, will be running a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer! Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe & Worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that characterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place. The beads are hand made by skilled artisans using Murano glass that’s sourced from Italy that helps to create that unique finish to each bead. Normally the designs are done by Nalu Beads themselves, but this time it’s up to you! Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘Nalu beads are that special memento from the surf destinations you love; they reflect everything magical about that place’. ‘Our aim is to create an amazing bead that is unique to Cromer, but we want the design to come from the people who live here or visit here, those that are
NEWS FROM KELLING CE PRIMARY SCHOOL
The children and staff had great fun on Friday 6 March, celebrating World Book Day. Children came to school dressed as their favourite literary characters, these included Peter Pan, Paddington Bear, The BFG and an Oompa Loompa amongst many others. Prizes were awarded for the most thoughtful costumes. Also that day teachers and children buried a time capsule in the school grounds to give students attending the school in 50 years’ time an insight into what life was like in 2015. Pupils filled the capsule with a selection of items from the school including photos, letters, drawings, a dinner menu and prospectus, as well
the most passionate about the area’. Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis is delighted to be involved with the competition ‘We’re really excited to be teaming up with Wet Dog to run a competition to ‘Design a bead for Cromer’. These competitions are always really popular, it’s a great way for people to get involved in the creation of a Nalu Bead for somewhere that means so much to them.’ Entry forms will be available in Wet Dog, Tucker Street, Cromer as well as a version to download on Nalu Beads’ own website. The start date is 27th March with the closing date for entries on 17th April. The winning design will be selected from the top five entries and the winner will be presented with their new bead together with a selection of existing Nalu Beads worth £100.
as school newsletters, leaflets and other general information. The capsule will remain buried in the school grounds until 2065 when it will be dug up and opened by students, allowing them to see how school life has changed in half a century. Headteacher, Miss Dolan said: “The children have greatly enjoyed thinking of items to put in the capsule, getting them together and creating their own pieces of work too. It will be really interesting to know what future pupils of Kelling CE Primary School think of our lives in 2015”.

Beachcombers Dining Club
We met on 2 March at The Feathers Hotel in Holt and enjoyed a delicious meal followed by a presentation by Neil Storey entitled "A Tonic for All’.
Neil has been a guest-speaker at Beachcombers before, but the subject matter this time was a ‘total revelation’!
Early physicians attempted to diagnose illnesses using charts, herbal remedies were prescribed right up to the 18th century. On the demonstration table was a large array of instruments including a ‘phleme’ to lance boils, a ‘bleeding bowl’ used by barber/surgeons, a ‘scarifier’ to scrape the skin and an instrument for boring a hole into the skull. We learnt that opium tablets were widely used as a ‘cure for all ills’, and that mercury was injected as a remedy for unmentionable diseases. It was hardly surprising that no-one volunteered to be the patient while Neil graphically described the action of surgically removing a limb in 26 seconds using a Liston knife - a Liston knife was allegedly used by Jack The Ripper! A brilliant presentation and we eagerly await his next visit.
Beachcombers Dining Club meet on the first Monday of the month at 6.30pm for 7pm at The Feathers Hotel in Holt. Our next meeting is the AGM on 6 April - with no speaker booked. You may like to consider joining and know more about Beachcombers. If so, please contact Hazel on 01263 838566. She will then pre-book a meal for you.

Council consults on development of Leisure Facilities Strategy
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) held the last of its planned consultation evenings earlier this month in Cromer to consult with stakeholders, including sports clubs, facility owners/management, individuals with a sporting interest and local members, regarding the development of its Leisure Facilities Strategy. The Strategy is being developed to provide NNDC with options for future provision of sports and leisure facilities across the district.
Four consultation meetings have taken place in locations across the district, all of which have helped inform the development of the Strategy. Ensuring the Council has a strategy document in place is part of future service and budget planning and is essential if NNDC or local sports clubs are to apply for any external funding from organisations such as Sport England and the Lottery Fund. Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sports and Leisure Services, said “The final meeting, as with the other consultation meetings that we’ve undertaken, was very successful and encouraged plenty of useful, healthy debate. “The information we have gained has been incredibly helpful to the Council and has ensured that we have a full understanding of what the current indoor sports provision is, and what the key issues for sport and recreation organisations are. This will help us plan for what is required over the next five to ten years”.

North Norfolk Wheelers Cycling Club Black Bikes sponsors North Norfolk Wheelers CC Time Trials Series
Independent Sheringham bike shop Black Bikes is sponsoring this year’s time trials series organised by North Norfolk Wheelers Cycling Club.
The club is running a full program of time trials this season racing over 10, 15, 18.5 and 25 miles. These events are held on the public roads around Sheringham and Holt at quieter times of the day. The events are properly marshalled and local police are fully appraised. Black Bikes is helping the club with competition numbers and signs.
Events are open to guests as well as members of the club. North Norfolk Wheelers Club Secretary, Nigel Walsh, said, “Time trials are pretty straight forward it’s just about how fast you can ride around a course. You race yourself and not other riders. Each rider is started a minute apart and the aim is to better your best time at that distance. The event is strangely addictive and although no special equipment is required riders often to go to extreme lengths to find those extra seconds off their times. Odd-looking skin-suits and hats and specialist bikes are not uncommon but anybody can come along and have a go using a standard road bike. You can even bring your old mountain bike along if you’re feeling extremely fit! The events are open to both sexes and all ages.”
Black Bikes owner, Greg Saunders, said, “I see plenty of the club members in my shop and I’m pleased offer North Norfolk Wheelers support with their time trials series. At Black Bikes we deal with everything from basic budget bikes to specialist carbon fibre racers. Everybody involved with time trialling wants to go that little bit faster and is always seeking a few seconds advantage from their bike. We love to help them but the real truth is that the most important part in going faster is the rider and not the machine!”
Time trialling is organized nationally by the CTT (Cycling Time Trials) and has taken part on British roads since the early 1920s. Britain has a strong tradition in this event and Bradley Wiggins is the current World Champion. Aerodynamics play a big part at the serious end of the sport and Britain’s Formula 1 skills, for example, cross-over perfectly into designing the ultimate bike.
Dates and times for the North Norfolk Wheelers events can be found on their website www.nnwheelers.co.uk. Everyone is welcome.

Silver medal for Gresham’s fencer
Bobby Rash, from Melton Constable and a pupil at Gresham’s Prep, took part in the Norfolk County U12 Fencing Championships on Sunday 22 February where he won a silver medal.
The event, which was held at Town Close School in Norwich, saw the Year 6 pupil win four out of his seven fights in the poule rounds, putting him in third place going into the direct elimination stages. He then won his next two fights, which saw him qualify for the final, where he fought hard, but ended up, narrowly losing to finish in second place with a silver medal.
Bobby Rash being presented with his silver medal
Bobby has only been fencing for two years at Gresham’s Prep under the instruction of coach, Paul Stimpson. Given that many of his opponents were considerably more experienced, this was a fantastic achievement at his first official fencing competition.
