New Guide Dogs group for Sheringham, Cromer and the surrounding district

Guide Dogs is appealing for people who live in the North Norfolk area to volunteer for a newly formed group that will plan and support fundraising activities.

You can join a growing number of people in your local area who are volunteering to help this National, well loved Charity by giving just ONE HOUR of your time. You will be making a real difference by helping Guide Dogs transform the lives of blind people by enabling them to live a full and independent life.

When you become a member of the team you will have the chance to plan and help out at local events which will include such activities as social evenings, quiz nights, collections, and selling Guide Dogs merchandise. Guide Dogs receives no government support and is funded purely by those who are willing to give time and help to this valuable cause.

The Charity plans to hold a coffee morning in the area soon so that everyone interested can meet to shape the group’s future but in the meantime If you would like to know more about the new support group please contact Daniel at Guide Dogs on 0118 983 8741 or you can email him on daniel.ingram@guidedogs.org.uk.

It’s been an incredibly busy start to the season here at the Grove. We’ve seen our Spring Menu launch to great acclaim and the house and cottages have been full of holidaymakers enjoying the delights of a sunny March by the sea.

As we move into the season properly the vegetable garden is ready to explode with the fantastic fuit and produce that John and Ann Graveling deliver year after year. The only thing is preventing the multiple grandchildren from upsetting the seedlings as they propogate in the family conservatory!

This is a classic Bakewell Tart recipe, perfect for a summer Spring afternoon with a cup of English tea. Do come in and see us soon!

Classic Bakewell Tart INGREDIENTS 50g jam of choice 100g butter 50g ground almonds 2 eggs 100g caster sugar 50g flour Splash almond essence Pastry to your favourite recipe.

Line a flan tin with 2mm pastry. Prick well with a fork. Spread with your jam

Frangipane Beat the sugar and butter until well combined. Slowly add the eggs and mix well Fold in the flour and almonds (add the essence if required)

New Chairman of Kelling Probus Club

Kelling Probus Club held its Annual General Meeting at The Dales Hotel on Thursday 19 March. Twenty four members were present and, after an enjoyable lunch, outgoing Chairman, Tony O’Shea, welcomed members. He said he was pleased to see so many members at the AGM as, in the past, it has been one of the least popular monthly meetings. Tony outlined a very pleasant year, where the club has enjoyed some very interesting and thought provoking speakers. He was pleased that most meetings had been so well attended, and that the club appeared to be moving forward. Membership had remained steady, and new members had been recruited.

The reports of the Club’s Secretary and Treasurer were well received and the new officers for 2015/16 were elected. Tony then handed over the chain of office to new Chairman, Mike Bennett, who promised the Club he would do his best to continue with good monthly speakers and the occasional visit to a local place of interest.

Main Officers of the Club are Chairman Mike Bennett, Vice Chairman Dave Vickery, Treasurer Tony O’Shea and Secretary Ken Murray. The club meets at The Dales Hotel for lunch and a speaker on the third Thursday of each month. Membership is open to retired professionals and businessmen. Anyone interested in coming along should contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Spread the frangipane over the jam carefully Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into ½ cm thick strips. Arrange neatly in a criss-cross pattern over the frangipane and trim. Brush with egg yolk

Bake on gas mark 4/5 for 30/40 minutes.

Sheringham Ladies Association

The speaker at our 24 March meeting told us all about The Norfolk Hospice at Tapping House and the services they are able to offer patients at the moment. They try to ensure that the people they care for and those close to them, can live to the full, have relief from pain and suffering, experience peace, respect and dignity to the very end of their lives. Their current services cost £7,000 per day and the NHS contributes only 10% of this, whereas all their services are provided without charge. They are constantly trying to find ways to fund raise including the profits from the hospice shops - we have a shop in Holt where they sell good quality clothes, household items, CDs etc. They have support from over 300 volunteers which enables them to offer services and care desperately needed by so many in this area and where at present we do not have a full service bedded hospice. They can offer Hospice at Home and referral for this is made through the GP, or community nurse. Our future meetings will be as follows:14 April - The Harmony Singers, 7.45pm for 8pm 28 April - Continuing his ramblings - Mike Crowe 7.45pm for 8pm 5 May - Committee Meeting 7.30pm 12 May - Social Evening with Hazel and Judith 7.45pm for 8pm 26 May - Michelle and Sarah - their visit to Kenya 7.45pm for 8pm 28 May - Lyn Stead is organising an outing to Cromer Pier to see Copacabana (phone Lyn on 01263 824652)

The Sheringham Society is a registered charity which has worked hard, since being formed in 1979, to preserve the best features of the area from developments which could destroy their character, as well as stimulating interest in the area. The Society has contributed over £150,000 to a wide variety of local projects which have improved and conserved the local environment and made life more pleasant for residents and visitors. These have included: • initiating environmental conservation projects (clearing of undergrowth and litter, planting of trees, shrubs and bulbs), • setting up a heritage walk with blue plaques on significant historic buildings, • successfully renovating the Fishing Sheds on Westcliff which houses the famous Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat and the Peter Coke Shell Gallery; and more recently • arranging for a re-fresh of the popular sea wall BATHROOMS. murals. 2014 had been successful in that the Branch achieved a total income for the year reaching £7,615. This income was over £1,000 in excess of 2013 despite having fewer collectors this year, and appreciation is acknowledged of the generous public support of the RAF fund, which does so much to help disadvantaged exserving RAF personnel.

ing forward to take up these positions – without additional help the future of the Branch is at risk.

This success was reported at the Branch’s AGM held this year at the Morley Club, Sheringham on 17 March.

The President, Air Commodore Tom Benson, welcomed those attending, in particular Warrant Officer Steve Roberts, Branch RAF Liaison Officer from RAF Marham, and Flight Lieutenant Brian Keerie of the Cromer ATC Squadron. He thanked members of the Committee for their efforts over the last twelve months but warned that due to ill-health some members of the committee were not standing this year and we had to appoint a new Treasurer, Secretary and Welfare Officer. He stressed the importance of the work of the committee and asked that more volunteers consider com-

members who had contributed significantly. The President’s Cup was this year to be shared by two members - Christine Martin (Secretary) and Shirley Warden, both of whom had made outstanding contributions to the Branch. A cheque was also presented to the cadets of No 1895 (Cromer) Squadron of the ATC in recognition for their support of the Branch during the year.

The 2015 committee was elected – the new members being Air Commodore Jack Broughton ( Secretary), and John Lawford (Treasurer). The Branch RAF Liaison Officer (Steve Roberts) gave a resume of the operations flown by the squadrons based at Marham and of the planned work services to be carried out prior to the arrival of No 617 Lightning Squadron. He also informed members that the RAF Marham Heritage Centre would be open on the last Saturday of each month and that special arrangements could be made on other days for parties of 10 to 15 visitors.

A new programme of Branch events will be issued to all members in the near future - new members and friends are always welcome.

North Norfolk Photographic Society World famous wildlife photographer, Holt’s David Tipling, said how nice it was to be able to walk to the venue, as he started his talk to north norfolk Photographic Society last month.

He also has started experiments with aerial photography, using a kite.

As well as showing a number of the photographs for which he is best known locally, members also saw pictures of tribesmen in Papua New Guinea wearing exotic bird feathers in their head-dress and penguins in South Georgia. But it was clear that David is as happy taking photographs of his children at play in the North Norfolk countryside - and of course also of Pink Footed Geese, Avocets, Shelduck and other marvellous birds of the area.

Always adventurous, David has recently made a movie film for Norfolk Wildlife Trust about a year on the Cley Reserve.

And not only birds - another venture is into underwater photography in particular (very topically just now) frogs mating and spawning in local ponds.

Winter notes from the Commons

The winter months passed quite quickly with very little snow and ice seen, although temperatures did dip from time to time and a few frosts occurred. It was a period of cold and not so cold days with no prolonged spells of either.

put in an appearance, a Water Rail, Siskin and three Fieldfares were observed by Mark.

January started with another Kingfisher sighting by Mark and the local Linnet roost had 53 birds present (4th Jan), also up to 50 Blue Tits were present in three flocks moving through different areas of scrub. The Marsh Thistle was still flowering (19th Jan) and a Bank Vole was seen by Mark. A Firecrest was again present (24th Jan) as were Common Snipe and Pink-footed Geese were seen overflying. These geese have not been so numerous this year.

Such was the ‘mild’ weather that two Chiffchaffs were present (4th Dec) and were joined by a third and a Firecrest (6th Dec) as noted by regular recorder, Mark Clements. The Chiffchaffs and Firecrest remained throughout the month. Most winter visitors seemed to be in short supply so it was a bonus when As we entered a Brambling and a February the Kingfisher were seen weather remained by Mark (9th Dec). comparatively mild Common Buzzards with Norfolk missing were also evident most the snow that affected days. A springlike day (9th Feb) brought out a Buff-tailed Bumblebee which was seen busily collecting pollen from Gorse. By the middle of the month, woodpeckers, particularly the Greatspotted Woodpecker could be heard ‘drumming’, a process that usually involves the male woodpecker banging its beak at a great rate on to a hollow tree to create a resonating sound. This is usually done in the spring to attract a mate or to advertise a territory. The weather continued less cold and a Common Frog was noted hopping around a wet woodland area (21st Feb) and a few days later (25th Feb) an Adder was seen at 9:15 in the morning. Although it was sunny the air was cool and the Adder was lying uncoiled with its body ‘flattened’ to present a large surface area to aid its warming up. This was the earliest sighting for an Adder recorded for the Common. The next day was wet and then the following day (27th Feb) after a frosty start the sun came out. By midmorning up to three Common Buzzards were circling over the Common and two Bramblings were seen in a scrubby area. Mark also found an Adder and an Orange Ladybird. On the last day of the month (28th Feb) Mark spotted a flock of 11 Goldcrests. With the weather being a bit warmer it should not be long before the Frogs and Toads return to the ponds to spawn and the first butterflies appear.

Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival A feast of fun, food, art, music & heritage The 2015 Seafood Trail & Wonderful Wheel Trail are Rolling Out!

The Crab & Lobster Festival Food and Art Trails always aim to surprise. Each year sees Cromer and Sheringham eateries offering great seafood dishes, and both towns are arrayed with a quirky series of uniquely decorated objects which have been generously sponsored by local businesses. So look out for some Wheely Wonderful Ships Wheels this year... there are 101 wheels to spot!

At nearly a meter in circumference these solid wooden wheels have been a real challenge for the wheel decorators, and there certainly seems to be no lack of creativity in North Norfolk! Hundreds of people have been working away for many weeks - including professional artists, enthusiasts, families, friends and staff as well as groups such as Cromer Academy, Cromer guides, Sheringham brownies, Colby School, Woodfields School, Cromer Junior School and Sheringham Primary School - and all the Wonderful Wheels will be on display by

Good Friday.

Wheels are clustered in the Cromer and Sheringham area, but some have rolled as far as Woodfordes brewery at Woodbastwick. All the places displaying a wheel hope you will also pop in and browse, there are gift and craft shops, cafes and pubs, churches, charity shops, putting greens, book sellers, estate agents, galleries, boutiques, museums, restaurants and many interesting places to visit on the trail.

to offer a taste of seafood.... often freshly caught that morning! Combining the two trails is a great way to explore our towns and the local area, to find out more about our seafood, and to discover some of the very special flavour, which this part of North Norfolk has to offer.

Trail leaflets are available from Tourist Information centres and from various points around the towns and nearby villages. You could win a meal for two, or tickets to the fabulous Summer Pier Show by voting online for your favourite wheel at www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk.

Remember to come back for our Grand Charity Auction on 30 August - you could bag yourself a Wonderful Wheel to take home - and all monies raised go to help local good causes.

The Food Trail includes 30 very different eateries and 30 fun True or False seafood facts. Cafes, chippies, tea rooms, restaurants, Ah, you, Snowdrop, who with green bullet head pubs, hotels and crab Have forced your way through cold brown winter earth, shops are all aiming

Inner Wheel club of Cromer, Sheringham and District – Visit of the District Chair of Inner Wheel

Twenty-one members of the Inner Wheel of Cromer, Sheringham and District met at The Virginia Court Hotel for their March meeting. All the ladies enjoyed a very good meal together.

A short business meeting followed with invitations to forthcoming events for members who wished to attend. This included the treasurer’s report, which gave details of the charities we had agreed to support during 2014/2015 and the amounts that had been sent to each.

And succeeding, celebrate with bright, white joy.

We who have seen only the cold and brown winter, Smile with joy and hope. You, dear Snowdrop, bring dreams Of summer days and butterflies and singing birds.

Like a peaceful army marching you drive out Cold and grey, and leave a white carpet of spring Swaying in the wind, and blooming in our hearts.

Chris Hargest

Our guest speaker was Mrs Yvonne Easton, the Inner Wheel District Chair who had travelled from Lowestoft to give us a very interesting talk, with a lot of laughter. She spoke about how she became a member of Inner Wheel only five years ago, shortly after the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years. Many tales she told of her working life and the charities she obviously still enjoyed working with especially Age UK and a Canine Dog Group.

Members showed their appreciation with a small gift of a Poppyland plate and admiration for all the meetings she had travelled to speak to around the East Anglia District.

If anyone is interested in joining the Ladies of Inner Wheel please ring Mrs Carol Selwyn on 01263 513717. We meet at The Virginia Court Hotel in Cromer on the 1st Thursday of the month at 6pm.

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

A farmer’s daughter from Carmarthenshire, West Wales, dubbed the “Cowshed Cinderella”, has won £1,300,000 from her parents for her 30 years of work and the loss of her young days of freedom.

The High Court in Cardiff was told that Eirian Davies, 45, missed out going to dances to look after the cows on the family dairy farm while her sisters partied. Hard-working Eirian was assured by her parents Tegwyn and Mary that “you will have the damn lot one day”. Eirian gave her life to the farm in the belief that her patience and hard work would be rewarded and that she would take over the thriving farm and its pedigree milking herd when her parents retired.

Until she reached 21 she worked for nothing. After that she often received as little as £15 a day for milking the cows. If she complained

A Chaplain at Cromer? I thought I saw one …

about her treatment, her father told her “not to kill the goose that lays the golden egg”.

Both her sisters Enfys and Eleri left home to pursue other careers and for the past 20 years Eirian was alone on the farm with her parents. Eirian was shown a copy of a Will in 2009 which left nearly all the farm to her. Relations with her parents deteriorated when she formed male friendships. A family fight broke out and the parents began proceedings to evict Eirian. Eirian launched a legal battle for her ‘rightful share’. The Appeal Court found that she had relied to her detriment on her parents’ promises and thrown herself into working on the farm. She was thus entitled to a “beneficial interest” in the business in order to reflect her “suffering” and the promises made to her.

It was ruled that the farm was worth about £3,800,000 and that an “appropriate award” for Eirian would be £1,300,000 for her to start a farm

Well, maybe it was me! I am Janet Stewart, part time Chaplain at NNUH and Cromer Hospital. I usually come in on a Friday morning but days can be variable and staff can contact me if needed. The Dialysis Unit is a special port of call and patients are always a privilege to meet.

The canteen is another special place – with opportunities to talk and perhaps be an encouragement to others through difficult times.

One initial query was ‘Why do you wear a green shirt?’ Answer ‘Because I haven’t ironed the blue one!’ But that question and others sometimes show a desire to share. Waiting on one’s own can be lonely and talking about anything, whether pets, NCFC or God, are all equally important.

So maybe I will see you around, look out for the clerical collar and the coloured shirt! Rev Janet Stewart

of her own.

The legal way of preventing this problem would have been to put in place a properly drafted Partnership Agreement to protect the respective interests of the different parties. This advice would apply to any family business.

Sheringham Museum Celebrates 5th Birthday The Sheringham Museum in its present form at “The Mo” on The East Promenade of Sheringham has turned five years old.

The Museum celebrated this landmark year with a cake designed and made by Museum Volunteer Lauren Perry in the shape of the museum, complete with its iconic panoramic viewing tower. The Museum moved to the present site thanks to an £800,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant made between 2004 and 2010 which enabled it to convert ‘The Mo’, an Anglian Water Sewage Pumping Plant building built in the mid 1990s, into a modern museum. The Museum houses three historic Sheringham Lifeboats, four historic Sheringham Fishing boats and the unique Social History collections of the town all under one roof. It was officially opened on 25 March 2010 by HRH The Duke of Kent.

Museum Manager Philip Miles said “The Museum only exists thanks to all the hard work over the years of the museum volunteers, including the board of Directors and Trustees who are also voluntary. They should be very proud of what they have achieved. I look forward to celebrating more achievements with them over the next five years.”

Over the past five years the museum has welcomed in excess of 80,000 visitors though its doors and become home to another major attraction - The Sheringham Shoal Windfarm Visitor Centre. The museum currently has ambitious expansion plans to enable it to serve its future visitors more effectively with a proposal to build a dedicated Education, Archive and Exhibition space on the current flat roof (as illustrated by the cake!). These plans are currently being developed thanks to a further grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Museum has many new displays for its fifth year, including a temporary exhibition on the effects of the First World War on the town, running for the whole of the 2015 season.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

At the Annual General Meeting of the Horticultural Society on 19 March, members expressed their appreciation to three members of the Committee who were standing down from their roles. Glyn Bottomley, Treasurer, Judy Wilkinson, Joint Secretary and in particular Paddy Corden, Chairman, were all thanked for their long and valuable service to the Society. The society was fortunate that Ian Hudson and Ralph Smith agreed to accept the roles of Chairman and Treasurer respectively and that the other members of the committee agreed tocontinue with their duties for another year. Unfortunately, no new volunteers for the committee came forward but if anyone is interested in joining the Committee we would be pleased to co-opt them at any time during the year. The outgoing Chairman reported on the activities during 2014 including the successful programme of talks and Jo Hayton, the Show Secretary, said that although more entries would be welcome there had been satisfactory support for the two shows which had included a number of innovations. Looking ahead the Spring Show will be held on Thursday 16 April in St Joseph’s Hall, Sheringham and whilst the judging is in progress, there will be a talk and demonstration by chiropractor, Michael L’Anson, who will advise us on how to avoid back injuries whilst gardening. The Schedule for the show and Spring Newsletter will be distributed shortly. On Saturday 16 May, there will be a plant and produce fundraiser outside ArnoldKeys, Estate Agents, and if members can help by providing plants or cakes for sale would they please contact me or any other member of the committee. Bob Wilkinson, Secretary

Weather from Ned Nimbus

Up until a week before Christmas, the weather was on the mild side but thereafter, and until the end of March, temperatures were below average, often with an added wind chill. The forecast was for such conditions, allied with high pressure never being too far away, which meant most low pressures systems were weakened off or steered away from us. This is exactly what happened with the stormy spell I had forecast for early/mid March, which meant only north-western areas caught a lively spell of weather, which was widespread in the north Atlantic.

Since 2010 our winters and springs have been on the cold side or very

Sheringham Independent 413 April 11th 2015

Dear Margaret,

II would like to thank all the wonderful people who took part in, helped at or attended my Civic Service on the 15th March. A large thank you to Christian and the members of St Peter’s Church who made us very welcome. It was a truly moving and inspirational service which was enjoyed by all, so much so we did not want it to end. I now ask you to support the Town Council St George’s Concert on the 23rd April, 7.30pm at St Peter’s Church. There will be no charge for the Concert but there will be a retiring collection for local charities. The Concert is crammed full of local talent with performances from residents,The Little Theatre,The Shantymen, local schools, choirs and a song from one of our own Councillors! In addition we will be hosting, the mayor of Muzillac and many friends from our twin town who will be taking part in the entertainment. It will be another night to remember so please come and enjoy the night. Yours sincerely, Tricia Brooks, Mayor of Sheringham

cold in respect of the start of the decade .There is still a lot of cold air in the northern hemisphere so the next three months will be influenced by this. April will see average, or below average, temperatures with rain/showers and rather windy conditions for most of the month.

May and June will see a gradually increasing amount of fair weather, especially late May into mid June - either side of these periods rain or showers and cool conditions will prevail . Ned Nimbus

As you may know, we sent £247 to the Traidcraft's ‘Fair Necessities’ Appeal after Barbara's Big Birthday Brew.

During this Coffee Morning, and between January and the end of March, 25 more Fairtrade stalls have been held in North Norfolk. The profits from these stalls, plus donations amounted to £400, which has also been sent to the ‘Fair Necessities’ Appeal.

Groveland Farm Shop, Restaurant & Garden Centre

Over the winter months the team at Groveland have been busy updating and refurbishing both the kitchen and garden centre, ready for the spring. Due to increased demand in the busy restaurant, the kitchen has benefited from a re-fit allowing them to develop the range of pies, pasties, quiches and other delicacies they provide for the deli counter as well as managing the busy theme nights each month.

Meanwhile the new look Garden Centre has been re-stocked with a large range of seeds, shrubs, bedding plants, herbaceous plants, trees and gardening tools. You’ll also find a wide range of food and accessories for your pets and wild birds. Darren, the new garden centre manager, will be in store five days a week and will be happy to offer tips and advice to help your garden flourish. Darren developed his love of gardening from the age of 6 when he regularly helped his grandfather in the family garden, and eventually went on to study horticulture at college. After many years working in the horticulture business we are delighted that Darren has decided to join the Groveland team and look forward to watching the garden centre grow and flourish.

Aspiring young cyclist is given support by council

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is supporting a local talented 16-year old to help reach her goal of becoming a professional cyclist.

16-year old, Isla Rush, competes in Track, Road and Time Trials cycling. She already has an impressive portfolio of accolades under her belt and is currently ranked 10th in the country of her age group (Youth A girls). NNDC and Place for People are supporting Isla’s training by giving her free use of the gym and pool at Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre.

Circuit, 25 Mile and Hill Climb Champion.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council said “The council is committed to showing strong support for athletes in the local community to help them reach their potential. I have been active in sport as a competitor, coach and official and believe it is an ideal way for young people to make the most of their abilities.

Left to right: Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council, Isla Rush and Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services.

Isla’s accolades have included representing the Eastern Region twice at the UK School Games (Road inter-regionals 2013, Track inter-regionals 2014), as well as cycling for the Eastern Region at Road inter-regionals. She also holds titles of being the 2013 U14 Girls National

Add life to your years

Freda Cutter, aged 91, and Joan Joyce, aged 88, are regular participants of the TLC (totally low impact conditioning) class at the Lighthouse Church, Sheringham and both have noticed an increase in mobility and flexibility.

Freda says ‘After joining the classes I am now able to walk without my walking stick, my balance has improved and at the end of the exercises I feel a release of tension. I also enjoy the company of the other members when we have a chat and a drink after the class’.

Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services added “The Olympics in 2012 provided a wonderful opportunity to boost aspiring athletes and for everyone to participate in sport across the country. It is important we champion local future stars such as Isla and help in any way we can to support her aspirations to become a top level cyclist.”

Isla said “I really want to thank the council and Place for People for allowing me free access to train at Splash. My training is invaluable to my performance. I started off doing triathlons and competitive swimming before I started cycling, I currently ride for a team called WyndyMilla. My goal at the moment is to race in Belgium in the Spring. In the future I would love to be a professional cyclist living in Europe and racing for a pro continental team.”
