Sheringham Shantymen 25th Anniversary Concert The Sheringham Shantymen have been singing sea shanties and songs of the sea since 1990 and this year are celebrating their 25th Anniversary.
Alongside the already very busy year planned they will be putting on two special concerts to tell the story of the journey so far and to celebrate this achievement. The first is to be held at the Lighthouse Community Church on Saturday 31 May. This will be a free concert with a retiring collection on behalf of the Lighthouse Church.
The second will be held at the Pier Theatre Cromer in November, details to follow nearer the date.
The Shantymen have always had close links with the RNLI and this is shown by the badge worn on their shirts. They are the only outside organisation allowed to wear this badge. Over the years, they have raised many thousands of pounds for various local Charities. In 2007 they raised £20,000 for a D Class Lifeboat which is based in Wicklow Ireland, The Sheringham Shantymen have travelled far and wide over the years and, with several new younger members recently joining the group, hope to continue for many years to come.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GREENHOUSES
At this time of the year, many people will be considering buying a greenhouse to allow them to grow plants and crops that need more shelter and higher temperatures than are found in the open garden. Greenhouses are season-stretchers – earlier springs and later autumns. For summer food think tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. In winter they can be filled with hardy salads. Sowing seeds, growing on plug plants, propagation and protecting plants on chilly spring nights are just some of the other advantages. Deciding to buy a new greenhouse is the easy bit, deciding which one to buy is harder. There are greenhouses for every taste and every budget. My golden rule is to buy the biggest and best you can afford – you will never regret it.
Choosing which product to buy: Wood or aluminium? Aluminium is usually the material of choice for a greenhouse, whether in natural metal or with a painted frame. A colourful frame may fit into the garden better, especially if the structure can be seen from the home. Aluminium needs no upkeep, and the glazing bars are thin, casting little shade. Wood is an attractive, traditional building material and better suited to some garden styles. However, it needs periodic upkeep.

Shape and size The taller a greenhouse is at the eaves, the better the light transmission and therefore the wide the range of plants that may be grown. The eaves should be at least 1.5m tall. The ridge should be at least 60cm above the eaves to allow
a door that gives easy access, sufficient slope to shed rain and to encourage loss of excess heat. Glazing to ground level gives the greatest heat flexibility, but half-walling, using masonry or timber will reduce heat loss. Ventilation It is important to ensure that a greenhouse has plenty of windows that you can open to provide sufficient ventilation. Roof vents are also essential, and ideally should be on both sides of the ridge. Automatic vents that open or close in response to greenhouse temperatures can be useful. Plastic or glass glazing? The best glazing material is glass, as it lets 90% of light through and does not degrade in sunlight. Toughened glass should be used for doors and anywhere where people might fall onto the glass. I have referred above to the importance of ventilation and this reminds me of the village blacksmith from Letheringsett, near Holt, named Johnson Jex. His headstone in Letheringsett church, illustrated here, shows the range of this man’s achievements but interestingly back in the 1820s he invented devices for opening windows on greenhouses and conservatories in order to automatically control the temperature and passage of air. (Full details can be found on www.salthousehistory.co.uk). Bob Wilkinson
North Norfolk Age UK says thank you to Sheringham Helping Hands
After providing gardening services to local residents for 12 years, Graham Simms and Rodney Gwynn closed the Sheringham Helping Hands service at the end of 2014. Lyn Battrick, General Manager accepted a final donation cheque of nearly £6,000 and said that, on behalf of the charity, she would like to thank them and all of their volunteers for all the hard work and commitment providing the service throughout the years. Previous donations from them had been used to purchase a new boiler, also new dining tables and chairs, and this donation will go towards further refurbishments for the Day Centre.

Local business owner sponsors event to put smiles back on the faces of bereaved young people
To celebrate the help and support received from the Norfolk business community, Nelson’s Journey will be hosting their first ever Smiles Awards on Thursday 14 May at Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel, Norwich.
Twenty three local businesses have been nominated for 9 awards, and the winners will be selected by an independent judging panel, which includes Lady Dannatt, High Sheriff of Norfolk.

Norfolk-based charity, Nelson’s Journey, is dedicated to providing support for bereaved children and young people. During the past seventeen years, thousands of young people have benefited from the emotional and practical support of Nelson’s Journey staff and volunteers – none of which could have been achieved without the generous support of local businesses.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon Our Wednesday Night Theme Nights, particularly our Grill Night, has proved so popular that we have decided to run them for the next six Wednesdays so that all our patrons will have a chance to enjoy a White Horse Grill.
The Sunday Lunch Roast served every Sunday from 12 noon - 3pm is a delicious Norfolk reared rib of beef, goose fat roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, red wine gravy and seasonal vegetables for just £11.95 with a Child’s Roast at £5.50.
Our Children’s Menu is also available so there is almost certainly something for children of all ages.
Our ‘All Day’ Coffee and a Slice of Cake for £3.50 is still going strong and has proved very popular with many of the Overstrand ladies who meet at the White Horse each week.
With two Bank Holidays in May we expect to be busy and if the weather is fine our garden and children’s play area will be the ideal place to sit and relax over a leasurely lunch while the children let of steam. Regular readers of my column might like to know that our annual charity
car wash will be taking place on Saturday 6th June from 9am, so make a note in your diary and bring your car along and while the volunteers are cleaning you can enjoy a bacon roll and a cup of tea or coffee.
Full details can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk

9 – 16 May at The Atrium, North Walsham
As a preview and lead up to this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, artists from North Norfolk, Broadland and Great Yarmouth are having a Taster Exhibition at The Atrium in North Walsham from 9 to 16 May. The launch evening is on Monday 11 May, 6pm – 8pm.
This annual group exhibition gives visitors an overview of up to 70 individual artists’ work in one place before the start of the main event on 23 May. Details of all participating artists and the location of their studios can be found in the Open Studios brochure which will be freely available before and during the exhibition or online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk.
The exhibiton will be open every day from 10am until 5pm except on Sundays and artists will be on hand to greet and talk to visitors. Demonstrations by working artists are planned on the two Saturdays. Guided tours can be arranged and parties are very welcome.
The fabulous light and airy exhibition space at The Atrium has become the regular host for this preview event featuring ceramics, glass, jewellery, sculpture and textiles in addition to framed artwork by local artists.
This year we hope you will notice posters featuring one of Phil Arthur’s distinctive jugs. Phil, who is based in Buxton, makes terracotta slip-decorated bird jugs with influences from both 17th century English slipware and pre-Colombian pottery animals. We have decided to use his ‘Puffin’ to help lead visitors across North Walsham to The Atrium. Follow the Puffin!

Volunteering at the North Norfolk Railway
It’s not all about steam, soot, oil and grease... You can lend us a clean as well as a dirty pair of hands!
The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has launched a new upbeat campaign aimed at attracting people of all ages and skills to help the award winning tourist attraction steam on into the future.
The initiative entitled ‘Clean Hands – Dirty Hands’ was launched on Monday 13 April and is aimed at informing people that there is much more to volunteering at the NNR than just getting your hands dirty and that there are many opportunities for people who may prefer tasks that keep their hands clean.
New leaflets have been produced with custom made display boards at each of the NNR Stations to inform people who visit the railway how they can get involved
NNR Director John Durrant said “Through research we have discovered that many people think volunteering at the NNR is all about steam, soot, oil and grease but that could not be further from the truth. The railway has endless openings for people who do not want to don overalls such as station staff, waiting staff on the dining train, bar staff on the Muddle and Get Nowhere Buffet Car, administration work, shop staff and helping with our highly successful Santa Specials at Christmas to name but a few of the many opportunities available.
Trevor Eady, who is the General Manager at the NNR, commented “Although the NNR is a massive business and has a number of paid staff
the railway is mainly operated by volunteers, in fact without them it would not be here. All profits are ploughed back into the organisation, there is no private gain and our object is to keep trains steaming along the North Norfolk Coast for many years to come. We need people with a wide range of skill sets to achieve this and there has been the false impression that it’s all about getting your hands dirty. By launching this initiative we hope that people who prefer to stay clean will see that the NNR is the ideal place to volunteer and be part of something that is now gaining national recognition in the heritage world”
For further information please contact John Durrant on 0791 998 7557 or Trevor Eady at the NNR on 01263 820800 or e-mail j.durrant4@ntlworld.com
Local Rotary Club gives £900 to Air Ambulance
The charity chosen by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club this year is the East Anglian Air Ambulance and, at the last meeting, the Club was able to present the organisation with a cheque for £900.
Receiving the cheque, Jamie Edghill, the EAAA fund-raising coordinator for North Norfolk, told the meeting that each life-saving flight cost Jamie Edghill is seen receiving the cheque around £2,600. Over the from Rotary President, John Williams last few years, demands on the service have increased steadily. Public support as recently enabled the purchase of an additional helicopter and recruiting Prince William has also raised the EAAA’s profile further, he said. The £900 was raised by the Rotary Christmas Sleigh collecting for two evenings around the streets of Cromer and two days outside Morrisons.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although Pussy Galore and Domino are still with us at present, we have said goodbye to some of our long term residents since the last article. Smuts (now Phoebe), a lovely black girl, joined us at four months old and although the kittens had been in a home environment, they had not been socialised and were very timid. Her brothers and sister were quick to respond to the care they received and left for new homes some time ago. Phoebe was reluctant to have contact with her carers but by being patient and not trying to rush her, she began to realise that she could trust us (the little treats did help with this but not with her waistline). Phoebe has now gone to a new home with a lady who already has one cat that needed time to settle. She will let her adjust to her new life at her own pace. Although it does take some cats time to settle they do often surprise us and settle happily straight away.
Felicity (now Fliss) came into care at 9 months old, the same week as Phoebe. She too had received little contact from her owner so was very
nervous when she joined us with her mother, four siblings and four younger kittens. Although mum tested positive for FIV the other cats and kittens tested negative and most were soon re-homed (including mum to an indoor home). However Fliss and her sister Verity have been waiting patiently for someone to Verity, patiently waiting to realise what lovely cats they are and again, be chosen within the week, Fliss, like Phoebe, has been re-homed. We are now hoping someone will come along and choose Verity too. Fliss and Phoebe are beautiful black cats and so is Verity, who is a very gentle girl with a lovely nature. She just needs someone who is willing to give her time to settle because, once she does, she too will make that person a wonderful companion.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.

Magnificent music from Mark!
A packed Copeman Centre once again thrilled to the sound of superb live music, when top UK organist Mark Thompson visited Briston again on Friday 27 March.
He played a Yamaha digital organ, with the most varied programme of popular music you could imagine from 'Tiger Rag' to Brahm's 'Hungarian Rhapsody, via 'Angel In Blue' the 'Can Can', the haunting 'Somewhere in Time, and a medley of bouncy Marches, to mention just a few. We had two solid hours of magnificent entertainment, coupled with Mark's laid back 'Geordie' humour, with an excellent raffle in the interval that made £200 for the Copeman Centre's funds! It was certainly a show to remember, and the 100 plus crowd went home very happy with big smiles on their faces!
The next Briston Organ Show is on 15 May, when we will welcome another great organist, Andrew Varley, to Briston for the first time. If you enjoy the best in live music to suit all tastes, do come and join us. Tickets are just £6 each pre-booked (and accompanied under 16's get in absolutely free too) and the number to call to join in the fun is 01263 860844.

Cheeky and amusing exhibition
Alison Stockmarr ’4 B Facebooks The Gallery Norfolk offers a handpicked 24th April - 15th May 2015
selection of art, glass, photography, ceramics, jewellery and stylish gifts.
The Gallery Norfolk has a new exhibition of artworks called ‘Facebooks’ by Alison Stockmarr opening on the 24th April 2015. Alison’s ‘Facebooks’ is a collection of work poking gentle fun at the social networking site Facebook. She matches old photographs and images with suitably titled books, to create an old-style ‘Facebook’ profile in a collage, like a library of invented friends of yesteryear in an artwork to hang on the wall. And, it has to be said, appropriate, and sometimes inappropriate, narratives are composed to complete the picture! So beware, some can be a little cheeky…. But we hope you ‘like’ them.

Everything Goes!
When The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway, first opened in July 1990 it had no steam locomotives of its own and had to rely on those borrowed from The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years on the Railway now has five steam locomotives purpose built for the line. During the Everything Goes Weekend, 23rd - 25th May 2015, all available locomotives, coaches and rolling stock will be in action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry. The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection of some of the world’s most powerful 15inch gauge steam engines on display and in operation”. Train fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Children under 5 travel free.

Launch of Air Jump at Hilltop causes jumping bonanza
This month marked the launch of a new outdoor activity, Air Jump, at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in North Norfolk, which is the first of its kind in England. Air Jump is a 16 metre (52ft) jumping tower with various height platforms for people to jump off, before free-falling into a giant air bag. It was officially opened by the Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Councillor Brian Hannah who cut the ribbon and Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council who took the first plunge from 10 metres to celebrate. Air Jump has varying jumping heights to choose from, which include two fun level jumps at 4 metres (13ft) and 5 metres (16ft), three high adrenaline jumps at 7 metres (23ft), 8 metres (26ft) and 10 metres (33ft), as well as a 13 metre (43ft) jump planned for the near future for the most extreme adrenaline junky. Sheila Oxtoby commented “The addition of this unique and exciting activity at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Sheringham is fantastic news for local thrill seekers and for visitors looking for an experience with a difference. “Tourist attractions contribute significantly to the wellbeing of North Norfolk’s economy and I

SoulSpace - A place to reflect
At the beginning of 2014 James Stanbrook, the Head Teacher of Woodfields SEN School, was approached by Simon Fenn, a Children, Youth & Family Missioner for the Church of England, about running a ‘Prayer Space in Schools’ event at his school. Initially, James Stanbrook wondered how such an initiative would be accessible and meaningful to the pupils at Woodfields, but after he and a small group of pupils visited the ‘SoulSpace’ at Sheringham High School, a weeklong event that provided approximately 600 students a creative and imaginative space for prayer and reflection, he was convinced that a similar event would be beneficial to the pupils’ spiritual and emotional development. He said, “I was surprised at how such simple activities could be used to stimulate such thoughts and feelings from the pupils.”

Once Simon Fenn was given the go-ahead from James Stanbrook, he worked in partnership with Pete Skivington, the Youth Minister from the Lighthouse Community
Church in Sheringham, and the school to ensure that the event was relevant and accessible to the pupils at Woodfields. This involved a lot of liaison with the teaching staff, trying things out and adapting the activities and instructions where necessary. Just a year after Simon Fenn’s initial conversation with Woodfields, their main hall was transformed into a SoulSpace using fabric, lighting and music. It was filled with interactive and creative activities aimed at encouraging the pupils to engage with prayer and thoughtful reflection. The pupils were excited about the space and clearly wanted to enter the hall as they did so with enthusiasm.
The feedback from pupils and staff was overwhelmingly positive. The practical and fun nature of the activities enabled the pupils to express thoughts and feelings that the staff had never heard before, and they were astonished by the pupils’ reactions and responses. Staff reported that pupils who normally found it difficult to be still and be calm were able to relax quietly, pupils who often struggle to share space with others were able to do so calmly, pupils were able to begin to let go of negative experiences and feelings, and pupils were able to identify positive things in their lives and be thankful for them. Some pupils with significant emotional difficulties were able to share their thoughts and fears to staff for the first time which will enable the school to work with them on their anxieties and develop coping strategies.
Saturday Family Advice Mornings (available by appointment only) The Point, 1 Augusta Street, Sheringham NR26 8LA If you’re thinking of separating, have a dispute with your ‘‘ex’’ over your children, or just want some family legal advice why not come along to one of our free family advice mornings for a chat? The SoulSpace was also made available to parents and other staff after school. Some
staff were pleasantly surprised by what they found as it was very different from what they had imagined. They quickly saw the value of the space and many of them talked to the Deputy Head, Bec Tate, about needing something permanent in school to allow the pupils a space to be still, quiet and think. One member of staff said, ‘an amazing place, it created instant calm and relaxation’ and another said, ‘I would love to spend hours in here – fabulous’.
The feedback from the parents was equally positive, one parent wrote in the comments book, ‘what a wonderful calm and relaxing place, our children could really benefit from having a permanent place like this’, and another said, ‘it gives you a great chance to reflect’.
James Stanbrook spoke to many of the pupils after the event who all said they had enjoyed it and would like to have the experience again. The school is investigating the possibility of having a similar permanent space to work in with pupils to improve its ability to meet their emotional and social needs. He said ‘this has been a fantastically successful project and certainly something we would like to repeat in the future.’
Although many of the pupils at Woodfields have multiple and complex needs, the SoulSpace has highlighted the need to provide all pupils, regardless of their abilities, the space to be still, to think and reflect on the important things in life. Simon Fenn will continue to work with the school on future projects and support their provision for the spiritual, moral, cultural and social development of the pupils.
Sheringham High School will be running their third annual SoulSpace during the first week of July 2015. If you would like to visit, please contact Simon Fenn directly.

The Festival runs from 15 - 17 May, starting at 7.30pm on Friday 15th with a fabulous variety show at Cromer Pier Pavillion Theatre. TV & Radio favourite, David Whitely is our host and the acts include Backdrafts - firemen’s rock band, Pat Nearney - the Norfolk nut, Marlene’s Dancers, My Bad Sister, and The Sheringham Shantymen. Special Festival Tickets only £7.50 (from Pier box office)
Each Town brings its own unique flavour to the weekend’s celebrations. The main Festival site on Saturday and Sunday is at Evington Lawns in Cromer with stalls, crab sandwiches, entertainment, cookery theatre, heritage exhibits, crab dressing, Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority giant fishtank, live performers etc. On Saturday evening there’s an enormous paella cook-up plus Woodfordes bar and music from the ever popular Fishwives Choir and a visit from the touring milk float with singer-songwriter Paul Thompson. There will also be
events around the pier including “behind the scenes” theatre tour and a very special crab race on Sunday!
Sunday in Sheringham will be buzzing with live music, street-mosphere, cookery demonstrations, morris dancers, The Shantymen, crab shell painting, Coastguards, and very much more. Extra this year will be town linking projects following the newly relaunched Norfolk Coast path, plus heritage events from our Libraries and the Museums at Night Project. The Food and Art Trail starts at Easter and runs till late August, with 101 decorated ships wheels to track down, and 30 interesting eateries (with cheeky seafood facts) to choose from. The final event is on Sunday 30 August - The World Pier Crabbing Championships, plus stalls & entertainments followed by the Grand Charity Auction when all the wonderful decorated ships wheels will be sold to the highest bidder. All funds raised go to support local charities... and you could bag yourself a unique piece of wheel art!

ABC – U?
The Sheringham ABC (After Breast Cancer) Group gives support to anyone who has had breast cancer at any time.
We meet on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month from 7pm – 9 pm at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Cromer Rd, Sheringham. We usually do a variety of low impact exercises and a relaxation session, followed by refreshments and chat, sometimes about cancer related issues and sometimes not. Occasionally we do other activities instead, perhaps a speaker or a walk but it is always a social event as much as anything else. For many people, it can be a great help to relax and just be with others who have been in a similar situation, and to share experiences and information. The regular members just make a small contribution towards the running costs but any new people are welcome to come along for free and see if it suits them. We’ve been lucky enough over the many years we’ve been established, to have received additional financial help from a variety of sources for which we are very grateful, and we also do some fundraising events ourselves to help boost the funds. If anyone is interested in joining us then do please contact me for further details, or just come along to a meeting. Sheila McGinley, 01263 820924 or email sheilamcginley@aol.com
Council welcomes Albert Bartlett to the district
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), are delighted that the former Heinz Westwick factory near North Walsham has been acquired by a growing, international company - Albert Bartlett. Following the announcement last October that Heinz was considering closure of the factory, NNDC has been offering support and assistance to staff on future employment and retraining options. Support has included organising a careers fair event attended by ten local businesses, offering Heinz staff the chance to sign on to the Council’s temporary employment register as well as offering employability support surgeries and self-employment advice. In addition to this, several meetings involving senior officers and Leader

of the Council have taken place with the both Heinz and prospective purchasers of the factory. The contact with Heinz has offered advice and guidance on the forthcoming closure whilst advice and information about potential grants and funding streams have been offered to the new purchasers - Albert Bartlett. Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council said “After all the uncertainty about the future of the plant over the past six months, the news that Albert Bartlett is acquiring the Westwick factory is fantastic and a really positive development for the local economy, whom obviously see North Norfolk as a great place to invest and do business in. Sheila added “Albert Bartlett is a growing, international company and we are committed to offering our fullest support and working with them to ensure the best possible outcome for the local economy and people of North Walsham.”

It’s get set, go, for council Chief Exec
The Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council will be putting her best foot forward for charity at this year’s London Marathon.
Sheila Oxtoby is spending every moment of her spare time in between her busy schedule training for the London Marathon to raise money for Sense, the UK's largest organisation offering support to deafblind people and their families. Sheila will be sharing where she enjoys running the most and offering tips of the best places to run in North Norfolk @NorthNorfolkDC #SOLM (Hashtag stands for: Sheila Oxtoby London Marathon) Chief Executive of NNDC, Sheila Oxtoby, said “This is my first and most probably my last marathon! I wanted to push myself and do something special to help raise money for such a good cause.
“Supporting Sense means supporting a vision for a world in which all deafblind children and adults can lead full and active lives in our society. The work they do is amazing and I would welcome anyone who wishes to support me and in turn help me to help a deafblind child tell his mummy "I love you" for the first time.”

Richard Kramer, Sense Deputy CEO added “The very best of luck to Ms Oxtoby with her first marathon effort! The London Marathon is no mean feat and we can’t thank the Chief Exec enough for all her hard work to raise awareness of the work Sense does in Norfolk and vital funds for deafblind people to enjoy the things that most of us take for granted.”
