Sheringham Woodfields School Opens New Sensory Room

On Friday 17 April a milestone was reached at Sheringham Woodfields School. The school is purpose built for children with severe and special educational needs and it officially opened its new Sensory Room on this day.

David Gooch, Deputy Sheringham Mayor and Ruth Diver MBE, a retired Woodfields School teacher who was awarded the MBE for her outstanding work with children and teenagers with learning disabilities, were there to perform the opening ceremony.

The new Sensory Room will provide physical and mental stimulation to Woodfields School pupils and has been financed by 18 months of fundraising which, along with many generous donations, raised the necessary £50,000. Some donations came as a result of bereavements in families with a close association with Sheringham Woodfields School.

New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

The Sensory Room has been supplied and fitted by Experia Innovations and is fully accessible to wheel-chair users. It will be in full-use during term time but also available to the wider community after hours or during holiday times when the school is closed.

Ten pupils can be in the room at the same time and it is driven by its own computer server system. It features bubble tubes, a bubble wall, mirrors and stars, an infinity tube, water bed, a sound activated fantail, a digital projector, scanners and trackers, an aurora projector, fibre optics, a sound system and a colour control system. Everything can be controlled by an ipad by staff, or by any of the pupils in the room.

"I'm very pleased the room is being put to good use and proving beneficial to Sheringham Woodfields School pupils," said Matthew Smith, Business Manager of Sheringham Woodfields School.

He continues, "I would like to express my gratitude to everybody involved in this project; and to Simon Turnbull, Site Manager, for all his hard work and support throughout the project."

Wild Wes Weekend set to celebrate the films of Wes Anderson with special introductions and discussions Film students from the UEA collaborate with Sheringham Little Theatre to create a weekend showcasing the acclaimed American writer and director

Sheringham Little Theatre is excited to continue its special cinema seasons - this time by shining a light on indie-film favourite Wes Anderson, who has quickly risen to a household name since his first feature Bottle Rocket came out in 1996. The season starts on Saturday, 16 May and runs until Sunday 17 May.

Anderson’s films are popular for their use of quirky characters, colourful imagery and charmingly choreographed symmetry, which is found in almost every scene. His work isimmediately recognisable for its distinct tone, and his stories are full of enticing escapades which make him a favourite choice for audiences across all ages.

Film students from the University of East Anglia will introduce each screening, and will also lead discussions on each picture after it finishes. This gives audience members a unique chance to learn more about these films in a fun, informed and relaxed setting.

The season kicks off with the family favourite The Fantastic Mr Fox, continuing with The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom, and then concluding with the recent favourite The Grand Budapest Hotel. While each film is dazzlingly different, they are connected through the themes of family, adventure and nostalgia.

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre, said “These film festivals are a lovely way for our audiences to really immerse themselves in a topic or filmmaker, and enjoy a rare chance to see these fantastic films on the big screen again.

“We’ve been having a lot of requests to highlight Wes Anderson in a season, especially as his films are so widely loved by both film buffs and families alike. We’re all really excited about the UEA’s Film students leading these discussions, as every time we’ve had these Film seasons before they’ve been a huge success.”

Tickets for the event are already on sale (with a discount for a full Weekend Ticket), and are available by calling Sheringham Little Theatre’s Box Office on 01263 822347 or by visiting www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

CROSS-BORDER RAID IN NAME OF CULTURE Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is gearing up for another cultural raid over the border to draw old rivals even closer together.

Last summer’s Suffolk safari with his Missionaries of Mirth delivered enough home truths and raised sufficient hearty laughs to warrant an action replay at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre on Sunday 7 June at 2.15pm.

‘Here We Are Again!’ is a natural fun-packed successor to the highly successful ‘We Come in Peace!’ with both shows born out of a burning desire to knock down old prejudices and build new bridges. “Rumours are rife that Lowestoft could do with at least one more” said Skip after a recent recognisance trip under the cloak of darkness.

Of course, there is added spice this time with Norwich City and Ipswich Town both embroiled in the big Championship promotion race. The hope is both sets of supporters will accept their respective fates in the true sporting spirit.

“We have much more in common to celebrate than marked differences to force us apart. Our glorious dialects meet somewhere in the middle before Suffolk starts singing. We both laugh at Essex, ourselves and each other.”

Skip will be joined on stage by Mundesley favourites comedian Pat Nearney (The Norfolk Nut), Sheilah Olley (The Norfolk Fairy), Mik Godfrey (bus-driving Bard of Bodham), fiddler supreme Chris Holderness,

melodeon maestro Ian Prettyman (who also acts as cultural attaché in his native Lowestoft) and singer Danny Platton.

There will be a collection for the Eastern Daily Press ‘We Care Appeal’ at the end of the show.

All tickets are £10 from the Marina box office on 01502 533200 or online at www.marinatheatre.co.uk.

“I have been to Suffolk before” said Skip “after being told Southwold is no more than Cromer with an A Level. I did take to the waters at Aldeburgh – but they didn’t come up to my expectations. It was much more fun holding elocution lessons in Walberswick.”

Sheringham Lace Makers is a group of lace makers (surprisingly, perhaps!) which meets in clint_brown_1@hotmail.com St Andrews Church Hall, in Sheringham, every Monday afternoon in term-time, from 1pm to 4pm. We all make - or have made - bobbin lace, but our members also crochet, knit, embroider, and do all sorts of other crafts, and we would be more than happy to welcome new members and their crafts at our meetings. We are also pleased to see any holiday visitors at the meetings. During the year, we arrange an October ’Make Lace, Make Friends’ Lace Day - with speaker and suppliers - several workshops, a summer event sometimes a strawberry tea, other times a lunch - and there are refreshments at each meeting. Sheringham Lace Makers also demonstrate at local fairs and events during the year, and the group has an extensive library of books, and also equipment, which can be borrowed, and as several of the members have taught, or still do teach, there is always someone around to help with any problems. Our members do come from all over North Norfolk, from Hunstanton, North Walsham, Holt etc, so - if anyone is interested in joining us, please do give our Chairman, Carol Adkinson, a ring on 01263/822075 - she will be pleased to give any more information.

Crayford and Abbs Practical Car and Van Rental

Practical Car Hire and Van Rental is returning to its roots with the arrival of Crayford and Abbs joining the franchise at both Bodham and Mundesley.

Practical Car & Van Rental is one of the largest vehicle rental companies in the UK, with over 170 outlets, dominating the mid-range market. Practical Used Car & Van Rental was founded in 1984 by Bolton Agnew (from Oulton, near Aylsham) and Harold Williams, taking an American concept of renting older cars and vans from small community based garages as an add on to their core motor trade-based business. The company changed name in 1990 to Practical Car & Van Rental, allowing them to offer newer vehicles, yet still looking to make the most of their experience and history.

To date Practical has not had a franchisee in North Norfolk for many years. However, that all changes in May, when Crayford and Abbs at Mundesley and Bodham officially join the Practical Company!

This addition to the Crayford and Abbs business all stems from a recent prize trip to South Africa for the MD Kevin Abbs. During the Nissan holiday, Kevin and Elaine spent time during their safari with Graham and Sally Furneaux, whose company had purchased Practical in 2014 and, following discussion regarding the business and the open point in North Norfolk, Kevin felt there was a gap in the North Walsham and Holt areas for Car and Van rental, hence this venture being launched this May!

Practical’s business model is based around excellent customer service at competitive prices, so mixed very well with the ‘ideal’ of Crayford and Abbs. Adding to their existing ties with Nissan they will run a small fleet of Nissan cars, with every model available, including automatics and electric cars. Alongside a selection of vans to include an electric eco one! They have access to all variants through Practical and also offer ‘one way’ transactions.

Crayford and Abbs are also establishing their own car club – they see many customers who for various reasons give up their car ownership, but need the use of one for holidays or infrequent trips not sufficient to justify ownership of either a larger car or indeed total ownership – please call Tom for further information. This venture is operated from both Bodham and Mundesley under the manager Tom Partridge who can be contacted on 01263 588160.

Cherishing Churchyards Week

Wildflower Identification Workshop at St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market.

As part of the national ‘Cherishing Churchyards’ week, which runs from 8 – 15 June, St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market will be hosting a wildflower identification day on Saturday 13 June, starting at 10am and ending at 1pm. The churchyard is noted for its richness in terms of the diversity of plant species.

This event is being organised by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, who run a Churchyard Conservation Scheme. They provide free plant surveys and advice to churches on how to manage their churchyards for wildflowers and other wildlife.

The workshop will be led by Chris Roberts, a local botanist who spends her working life surveying and recording in woodlands, grasslands, by rivers and ditches, as well as in churchyards. She asks that those attending the workshop bring along a notebook, pencil, and a hand lens or magnifying glass if they have one. This event would be of particular interest to those who are involved in the management of their churchyard and are interested in learning more about wildflower identification. This is not a condition of attendance. No previous botanical knowledge is assumed.

Places are strictly limited and must be pre-booked. There is no charge. Car park available and all facilities.

Reservations please to Geoffrey Hunter info@thorpemarket.org.uk or 07980 695385.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

At their Annual General Meeting on 15 April, North Norfolk Photographic Society elected Malcolm English as Chairman. Derek Cattermull had held the post for some eight years, so on his ‘retirement‘ he was thanked by being given Life Membership of the club and a gift token.

The Society membership has doubled during Derek’s stewardship and, judging by competition results, the standards of the members‘ photographs

has also got better and better.

After the meeting, the Society held a friendly competition - members were asked to submit pictures for projection with the subject ‘Blue(s)’.

All Blue Bells by Lizzie Wallis

The competition was judged by the members themselves - everybody voting for their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. There were two winners - ‘All Blue Bells’ by Lizzie Wallis and ‘TV Blues’ by Malcolm English. These were followed by ‘Blue Tit’ by Hugh Barton.

A lively discussion then took place, a ‘no holds barred’ criticism of each picture, led by Bill Day.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com. Forthcoming meetings include a talk by Ann Miles entitled ‘Monochrome My Way’ on 6 May.

Dear Margaret,

Well done Sheringham Town Council (with special thanks to Doug Smith) for the fine new town signs that we see on whichever road we enter Sheringham by. They show the two towns we are twinned with, and that we are a Fairtrade Town. I am sure visitors will be interested to see the sign as they arrive. Yours sincerely, Brenda Smith

New arrivals at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. No ink is safe…

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has announced the arrival of two new high powered lasers.

“The last few years have been very exciting for us and we have continued to invest in training and education and to add new services to our treatment menu”, says practice manager Trish. “We already have four different IPLs and 10 different lasers in addition to light emitting diodes and diamond microdermabrasion. Now we have added another q switch Nd-Yag and a KTP laser which will help us not only remove dark and red tattoos, but also treat people with deeper pigmentation and sun spots”. This laser produces very high powered and short nanosecond [one billionth of a second] pulses of light that shatter and disperse pigment particles without damaging the skin. This will allow us to treat all skin types, from very fair skin to dark skin concerns.

In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Q switched laser is the ‘goldstandard’ laser for removal of tattoos and Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic will be very pleased to provide this service with five dedicated lasers to remove tattoos of most colours.

One other application of this laser is a very quick ‘lunch-time’ facial that literally takes only a few minutes and a course of these can help rejuvenate the skin very well.

For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham is delighted to announce its popular annual Garden Show is back this May in aid of the Liz Jones Memorial Trust, which supports young children around the Aylsham area through various projects.

In addition, the Trust wishes to create an opportunity for a community apprenticeship.

Free to attend, the Garden Show will take place on 16 and 17 May between 10am – 4.30pm and will aim to build on the success of last year’s event, which welcomed more than 3,000 people and raised an incredible £1,840 for The East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Packed full of inspiration for the garden, the annual show is a great day out for everyone including budding young gardeners who can have their face painted, compete in a fun Treasure Trail to win their very own seed kit, strike a pose with Woodgate’s ‘head in the hole’ board and get up close and personal with birds of prey. garden full of colour and interest. Peter Purdy, founder of Woodgate Nursery, comments “The Garden Show is a fantastic opportunity for gardening enthusiasts across Norfolk to come together, share tips with local people and businesses, and raise HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY funds for a worthwhile, local charity.”

PLANT SALE

The next event on the calendar for members of the Sheringham Horticultural Society is the Plant and Produce Sale which will be held outside ArnoldKeys, Estate Agents in Sheringham on Saturday 16 May. The sale will start at 9am and continue until 1pm.

The Spring Show held on 16 April was well supported and the overall cup was won by Paddy Corden. During the judging there was a fascinating talk by Holt Chiropractor, Michael L’Anson, who gave a detailed account of the effect of strenuous work on our bodies, particularly the spine. He made suggestions on how to avoid unnecessary stresses including the value of doing warm up stretching exercises before reaching for the spade! Bob Wilkinson

Reverend Andrew Beane, from The Vicarage in Aylsham, adds “Thank you so much to Woodgate Nursery for choosing the Liz Jones Memorial Trust as their charity for this year’s Garden Show. I am positive Liz would be over-joyed with how local people and businesses are connecting with her memorial fund.” A host of Norfolk guest experts and demonstrators will be attending this year’s Garden Show including Green Thumb Lawn Care, Home Grown Revolutions, Mowbile Mowers, Rutland Willows and Aylsham Flower Club. Woodgate’s tearoom, Purdy’s will be serving a delicious range of homemade cakes, light lunches, ice creams, tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout the weekend.

Woodgate Nursery will also be holding a raffle and prize draw to win up to £300 worth of gardening must-haves and vouchers to spend in store. Peter continues “I hope this year’s Garden Show proves a great success and visitors walk away armed with plenty of enthusiasm for their garden.” Entry is free but donations to the Liz Jones Memorial Trust are welcome. Holt Festival announces new shows

Two new shows and a change of date have been announced for this year’s Holt Festival with more comedy, politics and a whole lotta soul!

Jenny Éclair, has been a top stand-up comic for many years and was the first woman to win the coveted Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Fringe. Recently she took part in the return of TV’s Grumpy Old Women with their live show 50 Shades of Beige, toured her own show Eclairious and published a third novel Life, Death and Vanilla Slices to rave reviews. In Holt’s Theatre in the Woods she will be in conversation for the very first time in public with Margaret Hodge, MBE who first became MP for Barking in 1994. Recently she has served as the first elected and first female Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, tasked with overseeing government expenditures to ensure they are effective and honest. In this role she has relentlessly subjected the great and the good (and sometimes not so good) to verbal grillings in pursuit of value for the taxpayer. For this first public coming together, these two formidable forces will interview each other about people, politics, power, petticoats, performance and passion. They are likely to touch on growing old gracefully (or disgracefully), the challenge of carving out careers in fields where, and at a time when women were rare and men often

tried to wield inappropriate power.

‘I was delighted when Jenny Eclair accepted my invitation to speak at Holt’ said artistic director Charles Pugh ‘She is a highly intelligent and perceptive writer and radio raconteur who has agreed to do a conversation with former Minister of Culture Margaret Hodge MBE, now famous as (outgoing) Chair of the Public Accounts Committee where, in pursuit of value for the taxpayer, she has subjected the Great and the Good to grillings that in the Guardian’s words are “brief, brutal and very public”.’

For the UK’s very own resident Godfather of Soul his appearance in Holt will be a homecoming of sorts. Geno Washington first came to the UK with the US Air Force in the sixties when he was stationed right here in Norfolk. Upon leaving the military he settled in England, becoming one of the biggest draws on the live circuit and hogging the album charts – his first live album was in the charts for an unprecedented 48 weeks. Pink Floyd, Georgie Fame, The Small Faces, and Jimi Hendrix were his support acts. Since then his powerhouse, soulful vocals and foot stompin’ band have established him as one of the world’s great entertainers. He was the subject of Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ hit Geno and his magnetic stage presence and his love of performance (and of life!) makes him an

Singer/songwriter needs help!

inspiration and a joy to behold.

There’s a change of date for Norfolk born Henry Blofeld and his great friend and foil Peter Baxter. Originally set to appear at The Auden Theatre on Monday 20 July, Festival Artistic Director Charles Pugh has moved them to The Theatre in the Woods for Saturday 25. ‘I felt that they warranted a bigger venue, and the opportunity to juxtapose the women’s conversation between Jenny Éclair and Margaret Hodge on the day before.’ he explained. Rogues on the Road is a brand new show crammed full of even more wonderful (and occasionally outrageous) reminiscences and anecdotes from Blowers and Backers. The two Test Match Special stalwarts take in much more than cricket in these tales of two extensive careers spent broadcasting around the globe.

Holt Festival has already announced other names such as Steelye Span, Jeffrey Archer, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Michael Buerke and Stella Rimington and there’s lots more to come when the full line up is revealed in mid May.

Kelling PROBUS Club held its April monthly meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 16 April. Twenty four members and two guests attended. After a delicious meal, members welcomed Adrian Barlow, a historian from Cambridge, who gave a fascinating talk entitled ''Memoralising the Great War''.

His talk covered many of the memorials in France and England which remind us of the great sacrifice endured by many soldiers and their families during the Great War. He talked about Mons, Etaples, Thiepval, Rancourt, Sanctuary Wood, where not only are there British graves but also French, German and Commonwealth graves as well. He stressed that not only were these areas important in remembering the British fallen, but it was important to remember all that were killed. The second part of his talk was on memorials in the UK. He mentioned and showed slides of the famous Cambridge memorial commemorating the returning soldier but also examples in Edinburgh, London, and other places.

He finished his talk with comments on Sheringham's own memorial in the Boulevard which he had visited the previous evening.

He was thanked for his talk by Ken Murray and enthusiastically applauded by members.

The next meeting is at the Dales on 21 May at 12.30pm when the speaker will be Ken Murray talking on ''Being an Examiner''.

New members are always welcome and can contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 for details.

Administering an Insolvent Estate

Written by Anna French – Chartered Legal Executive with Hayes + Storr Dealing with the administration of an estate of a friend or family member can be a daunting prospect, particularly if there are a number of debts outstanding and not many assets.

It is very important in cases such as these to ensure that the debts are repaid in the correct order, as failure to do so could result in the Executor becoming personally liable.

If these are sufficient assets to pay all the debts but not to pay all of the legacies and gifts made by the Will, then the estate is “solvent”. All debts must be paid and then the legacies reduced proportionately.

If there are insufficient assets to pay the debts, then the estate is “insolvent”. It is essential for the Executor to obtain full details of all the outstanding debts. The Executor should also consider placing Statutory Notices to creditors in a local paper and the London Gazette. This would provide protection for the Executor if any unknown creditors came forward in the future.

The Executor then needs to prepare a list of the debts. Secured creditors take priority and this includes mortgages registered against properties. The usual course of action would be for the creditor to obtain payment by releasing the security (i.e. selling the property).

Reasonable funeral and administration expenses, which includes legal fees, are next in line and can be paid before other liabilities.

The unsecured debts must then be paid in the order of priority according to the Administration of Insolvent Estates of Deceased Person’s Order 1986.

The first of these are “preferred debts”. These include wages or salary owed by the deceased to an employee. Ordinary debts follow and this includes overdrawn bank accounts, credit cards and outstanding care fees. This is the category where most debts are likely to fall.

The next category is the “deferred debts” and this would include a loan made to the deceased by his or her spouse.

The debts must be paid in the order of priority and so all preferred debts would have to be paid in full before moving down to the ordinary debts and so on.

If there are insufficient assets pay all the debts in one category, then they must all be reduced proportionately and the figures agreed with the creditors. If no agreement can be reached, an application to Court will be needed.

There are complex rules regarding property which is co-owned and passes automatically to the surviving owner, and whether this can also be taken into account when calculating the funds available to pay the debts.

This can therefore be a complicated area and the Executors should do all they can to protect themselves from personal liability. If you find yourself in this position, we would recommend that you take legal advice as soon as possible.

Update on appeal against refusal of Planning Permission for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm, Bodham, Planning application PF/11/0983 and the case was determined in the High Court in the Council’s favour. North Norfolk District Council has been notified that the appeal against refusal of Planning Permission for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm in Bodham has been withdrawn and the pending inquiry set for 9 June 2015 has consequently been cancelled.

The application for a wind turbine on land at Pond Farm, Bodham, was refused by North Norfolk District Council in August 2012. An appeal was made to the Secretary of State and the Inspector, Mr. Novitzky, allowed the appeal and granted permission for the proposed turbine. The decision letter was issued on 8 April 2013.

The Council initiated a legal challenge against the Inspector’s decision 22

Following this, the applicants applied to the Court of Appeal, seeking leave to appeal against the High Court judgment. Permission was refused on 2 June 2014 as “the sole ground of appeal does not have a real prospect of success.”

The consequence of the High Court decision was that the appeal was remitted to the Planning Inspectorate for reconsideration. The Secretary of State called in the appeal for his own determination following representations from the Council and a local action group and the appeal had been listed for hearing at an inquiry to commence on 9 June 2015. Following the notification of the appellant’s withdrawal, this will no longer take place. Sheringham Independent 415 May 9th 2015

North Norfolk estate agents voted the best in the East of England by its customers

Harrisons Estate Agents, based in North Norfolk, has been crowned the best estate agent in the East of England at the national ESTAS Awards 2015.

put a smile on their face and made a genuine difference to peoples’ lives. These awards help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year.”

The awards were presented at a lavish ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane in London last month.

The industry awards, attended by 800 of the country’s top estate and letting agents, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK. The winners are selected as a result of feedback provided by customers about the service they have received.

Harrisons, which has offices in North Walsham and Cromer, was presented with three awards by TV property expert Phil Spencer.

The North Walsham office was presented with the ‘Best in County’ award and the overall Gold award for the East of England region. The Cromer office was also presented with the Bronze award for the East of England region, resulting in Harrisons scooping two out of three of the top rankings available in the region.

Mark Tunneycliff, managing director at Harrisons Estate Agents, said “This award is extremely important to us because it is our customers who have judged our performance.

The Harrisons’ team collect their ESTAS awards from TV property expert Phil Spencer We were proud enough to have been presented with the regional Gold award and Best in County award at last year’s ceremony. To have retained these titles for the second year running really shows that we are genuinely committed to providing an excellent service.”

Phil Spencer, who has hosted the ESTAS every year since they began in 2003, explained “An agent’s role is about guiding people through one of the most stressful times in their lives and that’s not an easy job. The ESTAS are about those who have made people happy,

Sheringham Independent 415 May 9th 2015

Simon Brown, who owns the ESTAS, said “The ESTAS are special because the shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. In fact just taking part shows an agent’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. For the winners this is the highest accolade they can receive in the industry.”

Alex Chesterman, Founder & CEO of headline sponsor Zoopla Property Group, said “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. The ability to collect and act on customer feedback is essential to the success of any business and rewarding those who provide the best service in the industry, as these awards do, is perfectly aligned with our business. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”

SHERINGHAM LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

On Wednesday 1 April Sheringham Local History Group held a brief AGM at the Mo museum followed by a talk called, appropriately, ‘Someone to watch over me’. This was a reassuring title for a reassuring talk given by Richard Edwards who made what could have been rather a dull subject, into an amusing and entertaining evening. Richard is one of 40 volunteers who man the ‘Hut’, the lookout station 52 metres (150ft) up on the cliffs with views to Blakeney Point, the pines at Wells next the Sea, the railway, Sheringham Park and the Golf Club, who own the hut and receive rent for it. There is nothing between this hut and the North Pole, apart from the sea of course! This part of the coast is remote and isolated, with deep water. Facilities inside the hut are spartan (the bushes act as a loo!), there is no electricity or mobile phone reception but it is equipped with some of the most up to date technology for which funds have to be raised (a telescope costs £2,500). Richard, who has lived in Sheringham for 14 years has had a varied career in education, ironmongery and ballistics, gave a very informative history of the coastwatch going back to the days when villages such as Cley next the Sea, Wiverton, Wells and Weybourne in particular were bustling ports (hard to imagine now) and shipping was heavy. This brought the problem of invaders, ‘ne’er do wells’ and of course, smuggling. To try to combat the latter, revenue cruisers were used to patrol the coast, but people had their own means to alert the smugglers to their presence. It was said that the owner of Weybourne Mill (who was pro smuggling) would stop the sails if the revenue men were sighted. Those acting as lookouts were said to bury themselves up to the neck in shingle to avoid being seen! Beacons were lit at various places along the coast to alert people to danger, (eg at Roman Camp) and signal stations used a ball and flag system to send messages to

the Admiralty. During both World Wars gun emplacememts were erected at strategic points, to watch out for a possible German invasion as that part of the coast was extremely vulnerable (these concrete constructions, known as pillboxes, can still be seen). Now the emphasis is on saving lives instead of goods, and telescopes are trained not only on the sea but also on the beaches and footpaths. Everything is logged, whether or not in any danger, so that if an incident does occur the exact time can be logged for future reference. This is done by entering what is seen (eg a ship) and the exact time it is seen, into a book using not a computer but an ordinary pen! The volunteer who takes over at the end of a shift is briefed so that he can continue to observe, log and make sure there is no imminent danger. This ‘spot, plot, report’ method works very well and means that anything untoward can be reported to Her Majesty’s coastguard. The wireless, used by the coastguards, is set at channel zero. There is also a weather machine to record the weather and rainfall every 4 hours. As there could be dozens of ships of the same name there is an automatic identity system (AIS) to plot how far away it is and the direction it is going, whether it is underway or anchored and its destination. There are 3 watches per day, 365 days a year, from 8.30am to 4pm and 8.30am to 6pm in the summer. The coastwatch volunteers liaise with the coastguard but, unlike them, they do not get paid. There are between 50 and 55 coastwatches in the country and a sea safety group in Sheringham. Each volunteer undertakes rigoures training and works first of all under a fully trained volunteer. Tests are in place to ensure that each volunteer is thoroughly briefed regarding the technology. Inevitably there have been cutbacks and sadly tragedies have occurred which could have been averted had there been a coastwatch in operation at the time. It is reassuring to know that when you next stroll along the coastal path or take a trip in a boat there is ‘someone to watch over you.’

Four Rowers, 2,500 Miles, One Boat!

On 2 May, four rowers from Bournemouth Surf Boat Club departed from Boscombe Pier, Dorset, in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the oldest Australian Surf Boat to be rowed around Britain.

During the course of their three and a half month circumnavigation, a core crew of four will be joined by three auxiliary rowers assisted on land by several volunteer minibus drivers. Rowing approximately 25-30 miles a day, they will camp on land overnight, or take up offers of accommodation from coastal communities. The team of Ellis Hagger, Gary Cure, Mark Green, Sean Leddy, Steen Stones and Mark Vidler expect to arrive in Cromer/Sheringham sometime around 10 May.

The expedition aim is to raise £100,000, to be split equally between two charities - The Royal Marines Charitable Trust and Wessex Cancer Trust. Expedition leader, Ellis Hagger, explained how the idea evolved “We initially investigated an Atlantic row, but the costs were prohibitive. However, thanks to extensive restoration work on our 26 year old surf boat by local craftsmen John Clarke and Matt Williams, we realised that we already had a seaworthy vessel.”

With Sir Ranulph Fiennes as their patron, the challenge is already attracting lots of celebrity interest including Pete Goss, Helen Glover and Sir Steve Redgrave who have all voiced their support.

They list their aim as ‘to boldly row a surf boat where no one has surf rowed before – by circumnavigating Britain and raising as much money and awareness as possible for our two charities’.

Mountain Bike Challenge in aid of Macmillan

Forty one year old upholsterer Jason Cockaday from Sheringham and Robert Haylett, a 28 year old British Gas engineer from Badersfield, will be taking part in a mammoth off road event on 14 June in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Having not ridden a bicycle since he was a child, Jason decided that he and his wife Tracy should get mountain bikes to get fit and lose weight. As if that was not enough, he decided that to keep himself interested he would embark on a biking challenge, The Clennell Colossus. Not being able to persuade Tracy that she should join him, he enrolled the youth of the team, that is his niece’s fiancé Robert Haylett.

Robert, not realising what he was letting himself in for, instantly agreed and they both signed up that same evening, leaving Rob the weekend to buy himself a mountain bike.

Both of them are now in training and realise that their levels of fitness are worse than they first thought, so should you see two men riding mountain bikes, red faced and out of breath, around Sheringham Park, please give them a wave. Being Norfolk men they realise that living in a fairly flat county does not bode well

for mountain biking, but both are very determined and are finding hills in Norfolk they previously did not know existed.
