Voyager and Age UK
Voyager Community Group in North Walsham and Age UK North Norfolk have joined forces to create the new ‘Voyager Keep in Touch’ activity group with an aim of lessening loneliness in our community by encouraging people to get out and about, meet new people, have a natter over a cuppa and to hopefully make new friends; thus leading them to become less socially isolated. Our hope is to give people the opportunity to engage in new activities, enhance their creative skills, and with any luck their confidence; to learn something new and to have a little fun along the way.
The launch party is completely FREE to attend and is being held at the Church Room on Vicarage Street in North Walsham on Wednesday the 3rd of June 2015. It starts at St Nicholas at 12 noon and there will be a FREE buffet lunch as well as live entertainment from the local group the Squeegees who will be playing popular music from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Voyager Keep in Touch will meet at the St Nicholas Room thereafter every Wednesday from between 2-4pm, and will cost £2 to attend, where the activities will vary from week to week. We have an exercise programme being run by ‘Extend’ planned for the 10th of June followed by an indoor curling afternoon.
The group is supported by the National Lottery as part of Age UK North Norfolk’s befriending scheme. Age UK North Norfolk currently runs ‘Keep-In-Touch’ groups in Cromer and Sheringham. The Pop-In group meet every Friday morning at The Cottage on Louden Road between 10-12 noon. Whilst the KIT group meet in Sheringham on alternate Mondays from 10.30 onwards at the Community Room on Anchor Close. Lots of different and fun activities are organised by each group

Age UK Norfolk to Open Shop, and Information and Advice Centre in Sheringham
Age UK Norfolk is preparing to open a Shop and Information & Advice Centre in Sheringham.
The new Age UK Norfolk Shop and Information & Advice Centre will be opening this summer and will be conveniently situated in the centre of the town so that people can drop-in to make purchases in the shop, obtain information and advice or bring donations for the charity to sell. Age Concern North Norfolk (formerly Age UK North Norfolk) has decided to focus on its role as a day centre and befriending provider and following the closure of its Information and Advice service the charity has been working closely with Age UK Norfolk to ensure continuation of this support for older people in the area.
Age UK Norfolk has provided information and advice services in North Norfolk for many years in partnership with Age Concern North Norfolk. The new walk-in Information & Advice Centre based in the new shop will offer an additional option for local people in the area wanting to access these services.
Hilary MacDonald, Chief Executive of Age UK Norfolk said, “We are very excited to be opening our first Age UK Norfolk shop in North Norfolk and looking forward to welcome local shoppers and those wanting to access our services.”
Age UK Norfolk is looking for people who would like to support older members of their community by helping on a regular basis as retail volunteers or volunteer information and advice providers based in the shop.
If you would like to find out more, please contact the Age UK Norfolk recruitment line 01603 785241 or email info@ageuknorfolk.org.uk

Gresham’s awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund
Gresham’s School has recently been awarded £10,000 through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) ‘First World War: then and now’ programme to create a dedicated website as part of its commemorations for the Centenary of the First World War.
This award will enable the School to provide an interactive website devoted to the 110 fallen pupils and three staff, with profiles and supporting documentary evidence of those who lost their lives, plus a database of information on the 500 from the School who served. They will also be able to carry out essential conservation work on important sources, such as the roll of honour and photograph albums, to make sure they are available for future generations.
Academic Deputy Head, Simon Kinder, commented “I am absolutely thrilled about Gresham’s success in its application for an HLF grant. The Archive resources relating to Gresham’s during the First World War are an extraordinary educational and community resource and it is tremendously exciting that
the HLF grant will make this material fully accessible to a national and international audience for generations to come.”
The School Archive is a fantastic resource for historians of all ages to study the conflict, including letters from the front and obituaries published in the Gresham Magazine, as well as photograph albums, a vellum roll of honour, home front accounts, and biographical material donated by family members. Thanks to a project developed with Charterhouse, Year 9 pupils are fortunate in being able to use the collection to enrich their WWI history lessons, and Gresham’s would like to extend this opportunity to pupils in other schools. Liz Larby, School Archivist said, “The new website will provide digitally recorded materials which will give access to school children, historians, people researching their family histories, and the local community to study the conflict and its impact on the School. Pupils will be involved in researching information for the website and members of the public will be invited to contribute their own family photographs and documents
to add to our knowledge.”
In conjunction with Holt Library, Norfolk Record Office and the Norfolk Regimental Museum, Gresham’s took part in a family Vellum roll of honour history day on created by Gresham’s 5 May which Housemaster Wynne was a great Willson in honour of the opportunity for boys of the junior house local people to who were lost in the War, use online and one of the items which written records will be conserved thanks to find out to the grant. about their WWI military ancestors with help from professionals. There was also an opportunity to visit the School Archives and to see some of our WWI collection.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
The evenings are ‘pulling out’ and the warmer weather means our garden is becoming ever more used by families. Mum and Dad can enjoy a relaxing drink while the children play and the family lunch or evening meal will be served to their table in the sun. Older children can also enjoy a game of pool in our pool room although we do ask that they are supervised while they are playing. We want everyone enjoy their time at the White Horse so I always advise everyone to book their table in advance particularly at weekends and at busy times like Bank Holidays. We have an exciting summer ahead of us including our Strictly Norfolk week in July and Beer Festival in August. More details of both these events in the coming weeks so keep reading this newspaper to find out more.
Don’t forget our annual charity car wash will be taking place on Saturday 6th June from 9am so make a note in your diary and bring your car along and while the volunteers
are cleaning you can enjoy a bacon roll and a cup of tea or coffee.
Full details can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk
Nathan’s recipe for Red Onion Jam
Ingredients 4 large red onions finely sliced 1 cup red wine vinegar 6 tbls sugar 1 cinnamon stick water to cover if required seasoning
Method Peel and finely slice onions, add these to the rest of the ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer on a low heat, stirring occasionally. Add more sugar if required. Remove from heat when a jam consistency is achieved. Allow to cool and store in sealed jars in the fridge. It’s a great jam to have in the house; its versatility makes it an ideal accompaniment
New ‘Seaside Chef of the Year’ Award Up For Grabs by Norfolk Chefs
Seaside chefs in Norfolk can now battle it out to put their resort on Britain’s culinary map, thanks to a new ‘Seaside Chef of the Year Award’ created by England and Wales’ ‘Best Bistro.
Aspect Bar and Bistro, in the Lancashire seaside resort of Morecambe, scooped its national title in the FOOD Awards 2014. It is now seeking to champion fine and quality dining experiences in other seaside resorts, to help change the public perception of food served by the seaside.
Its new Seaside Chef of the Year competition is open for entry to any seaside chef, other than celebrity and TV chefs, and those working in restaurant or hotel chains who do not have control over their menus. The competition has a list of resorts from which it would expect chefs to come.
To enter, an eatery or chef needs to submit a menu, on paper, under three headings: First Fathom (starter); Full Tide (main course) and Ocean’s Heaven (dessert). The menu does not need to be based on seafood, but should have a distinctly local flavour. The menu submission should include details of how the dishes would be presented and priced and show a commitment to quality dining. Chefs should also highlight which local produce is used and can enclose photos of their dishes.

Made in Norfolk
A special exhibition of Norfolk crafts in a special setting. Wednesday 27th May, 11am till 5pm VENUE: The grounds of Felbrigg Hall
Our county is renowned throughout Britain for the large concentration of artists in all media and food specialists all of whom have set up their own small businesses making and promoting their unique products. They depend on YOU the public, to visit local fairs and exhibitions where you might be tempted to buy or you may even commission a unique item for your own home using their skills – an item which will be unique to your home and the only example in the world.
One such exhibition will take place in the wonderful grounds of Felbrigg Hall, a hidden National Trust treasure close to Cromer on the 27th May between the hours of 11am and 5pm.
We can promise you a wide range of stands (as we go to press 30-40), ranging from locally produced food and preserves, artwork from photography to hand made pottery, glasswork, aromatherapy oils and a further wide range of interesting objects. Bring cash or your cheque book since you are bound to be tempted and since it is an outside venue cards will be impossible to use.
In attending such an event and being tempted to buy you will be helping local producers to run their own little businesses and leading to future expansion of small businesses a key part of Britain’s recovery.
If you have the time don’t miss a visit to the walled garden at Felbrigg considered to one of the best in the entire NT trust portfolio and of course the Hall itself is also open to the public on Wednesdays.
There is adequate car parking available (not always the case in North Norfolk) and if you don’t want to visit the Hall itself, bring your dog and have a wonderful walk through the extensive estate. There is also a wonderfully restored restaurant at Felbrigg Hall.

All the money raised will help Marie Curie provide more free care to people living with a terminal illness in their own homes and in the Marie Curie Hospices.
EDP Food & Drink Awards Finalist, Emma Thorburn, host said: “We hope that the local community in Sheringham will join us at our event and help support Marie Curie. There will also be vouchers for any 10% off any bookings with Buns of Fun (the 10% will also be donated by Buns of Fun to Marie Curie) All the money raised will help Marie Curie provide expert care, guidance and support to help people living with a terminal illness get the most from the time they have left.”
Emma’s tea party will join others taking place across the country this June 20-29. Last year across the UK the Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie raised £667,000, which pays for 33,350 hours of vital nursing care.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
understanding of Beethoven’s composition.
JANE LINDSAY (Cello) and JENNIFER HUGHES (Piano) Templewood, Northrepps
For the penultimate concert in the current series, Cromer Music Evenings presented two artists of consummate skill, evident after just four bars of Debussy’s Sonata for cello and piano which was chosen for the opening piece, where the rapport between the two was immediate - captivating, even awe inspiring, the interpretation was so magnificent in dealing with the technical demands of Debussy’s colouristic writings in which the listener can imagine what they will, during the impressionistic compositions of Debussy’s style.
Ravel’s Piece en forme de Habanera was
beautiful in the performance of this short work, having a Spanish flavour, probably because Ravel’s mother was Spanish.
Seven Variations on Bei Mannern from the Magic Flute by Beethoven added a classical contrast to the writings of Debussy and Ravel: Lindsay and Hughes adjusted to the textures and interpretations with superb and mature
The major work in the concert being Rachmaninov’s Sonata for cello and piano Op 19 in four movements, proved to be a sheer delight - not in just the wonder of Rachmaninov’s music, but in witnessing such an accomplished performance from both players of this immense and demanding work, in which the pianist is challenged to perform such difficult rhythms, glorious eight note chords with delicate lyrical textures in the upper register of the piano - and the cellist soared above all this with a directness of the melodic lines - producing such a beautiful depth and warmth of tone and emotion.
A wonderful performance to end this concert, which I hope will be remembered by all present as one of the very best, enjoyed within the delightful Music Room at Templewood.

Sheringham Players Summer Production
Following their very successful spring production of Ménage à Trois, Sheringham Players’ summer production is "Flying Feathers", a farce by Derek Benfield.
The play runs from 17- 20th June at Sheringham Little Theatre from 7.30pm and tickets are now available from the theatre box office for just £10.
The play is set in the peaceful country house of the late lamented Bernard, brother to Chief Constable Henry Potterton and his sister, Sarah. When they come to visit, they are astonished to find several scantily clad ladies wandering about, not knowing that during Bernard's temporary absence on a religious commune in the Orkneys, his
housekeeper, Nora Winthrop, has turned the place into ‘a house of sin’. As Nora is not expecting a visit from the Constable, and is fearful of the questions he will ask, she hastily tries to hide the truth from him. This leads to many hilarious comings and goings involving one of her clients, who is dressed as a vicar, a window cleaner in a laundrette basket and a meek solicitor on horseback - not to mention the aforesaid scantily clad ladies. When Bernard also turns up from the Orkneys (or from heaven?), and it is seen that he and Henry are identical twins, the household is thrown into further confusion and chaos leading to an unexpected climax.

The Accompanist would be required to attend and accompany all rehearsals on the piano, as required by the Musical Director. Ideally, the Accompanist should be competent to provide cover for the Musical Director in case of need. The Accompanist would be expected to work closely with the Musical Director in the choice of music to be performed and, when appropriate, assist the Musical Director in the preparation of rehearsal schedules etc. The opportunity may arise to perform at concerts and provide accompaniment at occasional ‘Come and Sing’ events. It would be expected that the appointee would play a full part in the running of the choir.
a community choir with approximately 100 members. It was founded in 1933 and new members are welcome without audition. Each year the choir performs three concerts in the locality with professional soloists and either orchestra or organ accompaniment and also runs a 'Come and Sing' event in the autumn. The repertoire is varied but has consisted, in the main, of major choral works from the 17th to 21st century. In recent years, concerts have ranged from Bach’s B Minor Mass to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and, in 2014, Patrick Hawes’ Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) with English Chamber Orchestra, which was especially commissioned by SCCS.

Dear Margaret,
A huge thank you is due to the residents of Sheringham South for returning me as District Councillor along with my new colleague Judy Oliver. You all greatly exceeded our expectations! Commiserations to our worthy opponents, particularly Julie Chalmers and Rebecca Fish. Judy and I will of course continue to serve you to the best of our ability along with our friend Doug Smith on Sheringham North. There's plenty to do in these crucial and interesting years and we'll get around to visit as many of you as possible with what ever concerns you may have. Congratulations of course go to Brian Hannah for retaining his seat on Sheringham North. Finally, a word of thanks to the Neanderthal creature who sprayed crudities over my sign in Aylmerton Woods. I left it up, and it turned out to be the best advertising we could possibly have had! Not so the creatures of the same tribe who damaged the UKIP signs. There cannot be many of these people existing in our wonderful Norfolk. Dick Shepherd and Judy Oliver. District Councillors Sheringham South
Dear Margaret,
May I, through your pages, thank the 378 people who voted for me in the district elections. May I also thank my agent George Crocker who did a great job particularly as I was ill the week of the election with bronchitis and unable to canvas. People who voted for the winners may like to ask them where are the people who will move into the 50+ houses they are planning for off the Holway Rd, the 50+ homes on the old Hilbro school site plus how many they are going to build on the old Baptist Church site? Which school or which health Centre they are going to attend as they are both over subscribed? yours thinking of Sheringham Graham McEvoy UKIP candidate South Ward Sheringham
Dear Margaret,
Am writing to thank the residents of Sheringham North for electing me to the North Norfolk District Council on 7th May. Just as I have worked for our community as a Town Councillor for the past twelve years and served four years as the Mayor of Sheringham, I will now continue in a different role as one of your District Councillors. To be able to represent one of the most vibrant and successful small towns in Britain is both an honour and a privilege. I thank the electors of Sheringham for their faith in giving me this special opportunity. Cllr Doug Smith

Our Local Firemen Saved My Pub!
From Eunice – The Landlady of the 15th century pub The Crown at Smallburgh
With the chimney ablaze and the medieval thatched roof ready to follow her cry for help was met by not just one but three of our fire stations – Stalham, North Walsham and Norwich all rushed to her aid.
Eunice was so grateful and so impressed by their brilliant job that she pledged to raise money for their charity to say a big thank you.
Following the fire she was deeply touched by the local community helping her to recover within a day, so to thank everyone it was party time, she says “ all my customers are truly my friends and it seemed the whole village was there to support me”.
and with a vibrant personality. She knows how to have a party and how to create exciting foods so then it was time for another party to raise the money she had promised.
Again friends rallied round, one arranged for a whole Lamb to arrive, another created a barbecue complete with rotisserie and Eunice worked her wonders in creating a delicious dish of Lamb marinated with all spices that only she knows of from her home country.
Eunice is a lady from the Ivory Coast in West Africa
Dread Pirate Skater Bobbi ...The One That Got Away
‘The party raised £150 for the fire fighters charity which she was delighted to present to Gary Miller – a senior representative of the local fire fighters.
A good selection of real ales and a really warm welcome awaits you from a well managed fire! All the family, your children and your well behaved dogs are welcome in The Crown.
ARRGGHH! This poor pirate was left out of the Crab & Lobster Festival Art Trail leaflet – but can still be seen during opening hours at Cromer Putting on the Marrams, Runton Road.
The Art Trail and Scumptious Seafood leaflet lists the other 100 entries – including the Golf Wheel of Fortune at The Meadow Pitch&Putt but the Crab & Lobster Festival organisers may have to walk the plank if Dread Pirate Skater Bobbi catches up with them. “Bobbi’s channelling Princess Bride and Peter Pan, but is now coming over a bit Bluebeard,” warns John Morgan at Cromer Putting. “We’ll get worried when she starts lighting the fuses in her hair.”
Eunice has an attractive Restaurant offering a tempting menu of both English and her exciting African cuisine throughout the week and a superb
Traditional Roast on Sunday.
Eunice does ask please call her if possible and book on 01692 536314 as the menu is freshly prepared using local ingredients wherever possible and she prepares this herself. A warm welcome awaits you!
Eunice from the Ivory Coast – Landlady of the Smallburgh Crown says: “I would like to give you an insight to some wonderful vibrant menu’s from my country in West Africa, The Ivory Coast.
Some you can prepare yourselves, some will need a little practice and others and I will prepare for you myself.
Just like yourselves my recipes have been handed down to me by my family and have been taught to me from a very young age, some very basic products you will know of such as couscous, my secret is in the preparation and in the spices, and my couscous will not be the same as another – that is my secret which I hope to share with you.”
Crabster Art and Seafood Trail leaflet designer Siri Taylor said “We’ve been caught red-handed, but ship’s wheelers can still vote for Dread Pirate Skater Bobbi using postcose NR27 9AU.”
The putting team are using their two Ship’s Wheels to raise money for maintenance costs of the new Cromer Skatepark at The Meadow, and hope Bobbi will be in the Grand Charity Auction on 30 August.

Win a Magnum of Champagne at the Blickling Proms 1940s Party
The sights and sounds of the 1940s will fill the air on Saturday 8 August, when Blickling Hall is playing host to the “Last Night of the Blickling Proms” for the 4th year running. Now firmly established as a favourite in the county calendar, this year’s event is celebrating the special 75th anniversary of Blickling Hall being handed over to the National Trust in 1940, and organisers are planning a host of treats to put concert-goers in the mood.
The Grace Spitfire will introduce the evening with a choreographed routine to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain” which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller, the main theme from “Gone with the Wind”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “We’ll Meet Again”, made famous by Forces’ Sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn when she performed at outdoor concerts for the troops in the Second World War. The second half will include some rousing Proms favourites and organisers are delighted to welcome the Norfolk Belles WI choir to the stage as part of their centenary celebrations, to sing “Jerusalem” which will be a proud moment for all. A is customary at these events, audience participation will be heartily encouraged.
The 1940s was a time when the British unified and people pulled together and organisers are encouraging visitors to bring their own ‘street parties’ - for those who wish to get into character, there will be a magnum of champagne on offer for the best-dressed visitor as well as four tickets and a hamper for the 2016 event! If you are not sure what to wear – here are a few 1940s tips!
It’s easier than you think to recreate the classic look, the key is to keep it simple as Tamsyn Morgans, stylist at Sandra Reynolds Agency explains “The 1940s were an iconic era for fashion, and with the revival of vintage style clothing in most high street stores, it’s really easy to dress top to toe 40s style. A pretty floral tea dress catches the mood of the decade really well, especially when teamed with a fake fur stole or tweed jacket. Accessorize with a string of pearls and a handbag.
Hair was just as important as the clothes themselves. Youtube is full of tutorials for vintage hairstyles, so arm yourself with some grips and a can of hairspray and create elegant victory rolls for true 40s glamour. When it comes to make up, pillar box red lipstick is a must, along with groomed brows and winged eyeliner”.

As well as the iconic Spitfire that was used by the Royal Air Force and other allied forces during
the Second World War, visitors will also be spoilt with a fly-past by a 1940s Tiger Moth, the primary training aircraft for the RAF and others at that time, remaining in service with them until the early 1950s.
“It’s going to be a special year for Blickling”, says Jo Bosch, Marketing and Visitor Manager at the National Trust Blickling Estate. “We have some fresh and exciting things up our sleeves and the Proms is one of the year’s signature events; we’re so pleased that the 2015 concert theme will help us to tell the story.”
There is plenty to celebrate so come and join the party. The concert will be led by conductor Roderick Dunk with music by Sinfonia Viva. As well as having FREE parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their flags, bunting, picnics and wine, dress for the occasion if they so wish and soak up the atmosphere in the outstanding Blickling Hall setting.
So, don’t miss out! Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) and all event details are available online at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts of up to 20% are also available. Photos – courtesy EDP

Next month we will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the meeting held in the Community Centre to find willing cat loving volunteers to set up a branch of Cats Protection to help cats in North Walsham and District area. So much has happened in the intervening years and as well as finding loving new homes for over 3000 cats and kittens, we have had fantastic support for the work that we do from so many people and companies and we are very grateful for all their help. Our volunteers work so very hard to ensure we can continue to help needy cats in the area and long may this continue.
We have over the years noticed that you will often have lots of cats of a particular age or colour coming into care over a short period of time and then go for a long time before seeing anything similar. We know that we will always have lots of lovely black cats coming into care of varying ages but often find that nearly every other cat will be of one particular
Rabbits
colour. Last year, for example, we had a larger than usual number of white cats whereas this year there have been none. Again, last year we only had three older cats come into care compared to 10 already this year, (three of which have already been re-homed). Cats like Simba (10 years), a lovely ginger boy and Benji (9) and pale ginger and white lad who arrived because their owners have died, or Sweep (12) a very friendly black boy who was living as a stray after his owner went into a home. Another of our older cats is Mange Tout(10), another ginger lad who needs to lose a little more weight before we can put him up for adoption. As cats to live much longer nowadays, giving a home to an older cat is definitely worth considering especially for us older cat lovers looking to give one a new home.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

Rabbits are now Britain’s 3rd most popular pet.
They are an intelligent species that need company and plenty of mental stimulation. Preventative healthcare for rabbits is just as important as it is for Dogs and Cats. A combined vaccination is available to protect against the 2 most common diseases, Myxomatosis and RHD both of which can be fatal. Owners need to be aware of other diseases, like dental malocclusion and potential problems such as Fly Strike, especially with the warmer weather approaching. Rabbits need checking at least twice a day to prevent this extremely distressing and often fatal disease. It occurs when rabbits back ends become soiled with faeces, this attracts the flies which then lay their eggs on the fur and skin. The maggots then hatch and start eating the skin and surrounding tissue, releasing toxins which make the rabbit unwell. If rabbits are left unchecked in the warm weather this can prove fatal as so much skin and tissue can be lost. Some interesting rabbit facts:
Rabbits thump their hind legs when the feel threatened or can sense danger approaching Rabbits do have a voice – they communicate by humming to indicate affection Rabbits can jump 1m high and up to 3m long Rabbits teeth are open rooted – this means they never stop growing and they rely on chewing action to wear them down Rabbits cannot vomit Rabbits jump and twist when they are happy this is called ‘binkying’ Rabbits can see behind them without turning their heads however they cannot see straight in front of their nose!
Our nurses offer FREE healthcare checks for your pet rabbit, providing advice about feeding the correct diet, housing and environment. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER FORGET-ME-NOTS
torrents of a violent stream while picking a few of the blooms growing along the water’s edge. As he is carried away he casts a handful of flowers onto the bank, crying ‘forget me not’ to his helpless lady. Coleridge popularised the name in his poem ‘The Keepsake’ in the early nineteenth century: Nor can I find, amid my lonely walk, By rivulet, or spring or wet roadside, That blue and bright-eyed flowerlet of the brook, Hope’s gentle gem, the sweet Forget-me-not’.
The genus name, Myosotis, is derived from the Greek words for mouse and ear and refers to the soft erect leaves, resembling the ears of a mouse. The origin of the common name forget-me-not is not so clear. Some link it to the tragic German tale of a chivalrous knight, clad in heavy armour, slipping into the
These references probably describe the water forget-me-not, one of fifty species of Myosotis. All are annual or perennial herbs with alternate, hairy leaves and small salver-shaped flowers that are predominately blue, pink or white. The perennials are rather short-lived, and for garden use are usually grown as biennials. The usual garden choice is M. Sylvatica in its many varieties and it is extremely easy to grow from seed. Forget-me-nots are strongly associated with the English cottage garden style, to which their propensity to self-sow lends itself perfectly. They cover the bare ground in
Sheringham Independent 416 May 23rd 2015
spring, but also form a unifying theme throughout the garden. The blue flowers hugging the ground make an excellent foil for other plants, like the acid-lime-green euphorbias and the rich reds and oranges of tulips such as ‘Red Georgette’ and ‘Ballerina’. Not difficult to grow, forget-me-nots will thrive in any good garden soil as long as there is plenty of moisture. Powdery mildew can be a problem in dry conditions, but in general not until the end of the flowering season. These plants are extremely sensitive to nutrient deficiencies, and can therefore be useful indicators of problem areas. Poor soil conditions will cause stunted growth and discolouration of the leaves. Under stress the flowers often change colour from blue to pink, and this very often happens when plants have been moved in full flower.
At the end of their flowering season plants can be pulled out as soon as they become tatty or mildewed. Do not worry about the seed being ripe, forget-me-nots have such a long flowering season that by the time they have lost their looks enough seed will have set for next year’s plants. Easy and rewarding forget-me-nots deserve to be remembered and grown in every garden.

Mystery and Misinformation
Just the name ‘Mary Celeste’ conjures up an image of mystery. And much of the story that has been told for a century and more contains much misinformation. Ian Pitts did much to clarify the tale when he spoke to Holt and District Probus Club on 7th May.
The ship was an American merchant brigantine that was discovered in 1872 off the Azores Islands, sailing with no one on board, and with her lifeboat missing. She was in a seaworthy condition, and her cargo (of alcohol) was intact, as were her crew’s personal belongings.
At salvage hearings, there was speculation about mutiny and piracy, but no firm conclusions were ever reached as to what happened to the ship, and this fed theories about giant squid, submarine 22
earthquakes, fumes from the alcohol among others.
The story received wide attention when Arthur Conan Doyle, then only 25 and not yet known for his Sherlock Holmes stories, told a highly fanciful and inaccurate version of the story in 1884; and there have been many more such.
The ship returned to service after her mysterious recovery, but eventually was deliberately run aground, probably as an insurance fraud.
Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society continues to attract the very best visiting speakers.
Ann Miles was the most recent. World famous photographer, distinguished lecturer, teacher and judge, Ann is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (among others) and has been a Member of the London Salon of Photography since 2004; she seems to have the ability to conjure more time than is available to most of us for all the travel and photography that she does!
others from Brussels, Barcelona and almost every UK location you could think of!
The illustrated talk was entitled ‘Monochrome, My Way’ and members were shown scores of photographs where Ann demonstrated that properly handled, a black and white photograph can often seem to show more than one in colour.
Different moods that can be created using the monochrome medium were shown, from stark barren snow scenes to dark threatening skies in landscapes and seascapes. There were detailed architectural studies and soft artistic renderings.
Ann Miles comes from Cambridge, and some of the images she showed were of Cambridge, but there were
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7:30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

St George’s ‘Drive it Day’ run 2015
North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club produced a tremendous turnout form this year’s ‘National Drive it Day’ event for classic vehicles.
the final destination being the Royal Estate, Sandringham where the vehicles parked up in the large grass area in front of the church of St Mary of Magdalene.
Sunday 26 April saw some 330 classics roll into the Station Road car park in Sheringham where crews picked up their tulip style route instructions.
Two scenic routes of approximately 50 miles each were split 50/50 between entrants with
A somewhat forbidding forecast in the run up to Sunday luckily came to nothing, and the day turned out to be basically dry with some good sunny spells during the afternoon which made for a very convivial atmosphere among the entrants.
Proceeds from the run were collected on behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance with a record of just over
£5,000 being taken.
Sponsorship for the route maps and photographs was kindly provided by Anglia Car Auction at Kings Lynn (next Classic Car auction date is Saturday 13 June) and a huge debt of gratitude must go to the Sandringham Estate for providing such a magnificent setting.
Aylsham Heritage Centre evening talks
Aylsham Heritage Centre’s popular series of evening talks continues in May featuring two more events with a local flavour. Local author Peter Goodrum is first up, on Wednesday 20th May, with an illustrated presentation about Norwich in the 1950s and 60s. Peter will be drawing on the content of his well-researched books on this subject, promising an entertaining evening. The cost of the talk is just £4 and the evening starts at 7pm.
ALDIS MOTORS LTD
Cromer Lifeboat Operations Manager, Richard Leeds, will be joined by Derek Hinds on Wednesday 27th May for a talk about the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). So many people owe their lives to this wonderful charity and proceeds from the evening will go towards ensuring its continued success. Once again, it’s a 7pm start and the cost is £4.

The performance at Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club’s 40th Anniversary Celebration by Olly Day was “entertainment personified” according to one of the Probus members present.
Almost 100 members and guests attended at the Links Hotel in West Runton on 5th May. The host club Chairman Geoff Mather and Olly close the event had extended an invitation to the Holt and Kelling Probus Clubs to join the celebration and they were both well represented. As a result, seating arrangements could be made for each table to have members of at least two clubs dining together.
The Probus members, their wives / partners, and other guests enjoyed an excellent lunch before Olly took to the stage and provided great entertainment in what can only be described as a one-man variety act; he told jokes, sang a few songs, performed some magic, and his comedy ventriloquism act was enjoyed by all, but particularly by those sitting at the “dummy’s” table.
Geoff Mather, the Cromer & Sheringham chairman, had been the instigator of the celebration which was organised by the Lunch Willing victim Alan Mason Secretary, Dave Vickery. Geoff acted as host from Holt Probus with Olly for the event and presented Dave with a bottle of champagne in recognition of the effort he had put in and the successful outcome.
Mike Bennett, the Kelling chairman, thanked the whole of the Cromer & Sheringham Club on behalf of all the guests and congratulated them on the success of the occasion.
If you are a retired, or nearly retired gentleman and you would like to find out what Probus offers, you can call Dave Vickery on 01263 824306. The website is www.candsprobus.club where there is information about the club and more photographs of the celebration can be seen.

Bronwen Bell Club Manager of Animal Magic Dog Club said “We cannot stress enough the importance of early socialisation, for example; show an eight week old puppy a hoover, motorbike or a donkey and it will take encounters with these in its stride for the rest of its life. But wait until its six months old and you could have a dog that is fearful all of its life. Statistics show that the number of people requiring treatment following a dog bite are increasing year on year, often caused by under-socialisation of the dog at an early age.
At Animal Magic Dog Club, we take puppy socialisation seriously and we work closely with Toll Barn and Miramar Vets to provide FREE puppy socialisation workshops for puppies not yet fully vaccinated. We also offer FREE puppy events such as walks and playgroups for vaccinated puppies that have attended the workshops.
A healthy, well socialised puppy is a happy puppy and a happy puppy equals a happy owner. Dogs bring such joy into our lives that they deserve the very best start to their life with you so with this in mind we’ve created a number of fun activities for puppies and their owners.
If you’d like to join our next FREE puppy fun day which will include games, walk and tea party on Wednesday 10th June @ 10.00am then please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or e mail secretary.animalmagic@btconnect.com. Puppies must be under 6 months on the 10th of June.
