Canaries back in Premier League

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

Norwich City bagged two goals early in the first half to earn an instant return to the Premier League with victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley by 2-0. Both sides crashed the ball against the woodwork in the first few minutes. First Bradley Johnson and then 'Boro's Jelle Vossen

limiting Middlesbrough to half chances and were well worth the immediate return to the top flight.

Worth an estimated £120m to the victors, Cameron Jerome took advantage of a Daniel Ayala error to put the Canaries ahead, slotting the ball past 'Boro keeper Konstantopoulos at the near post after just 12 minutes. Three minutes later Nathan Redmond fired in after good teamwork in the build up. Norwich were excellent defensively for the rest of the match,

Age Concern North Norfolk - Trustees Wanted Have you ever thought about becoming a trustee to give something back to the community and area you live? It doesn’t have to be as time consuming as you might first think but if you can spare at least half a day a month you could make a real difference to a substantial amount of local people. If this sounds like something you are interested in then Age Concern in North Norfolk would love to hear from you.

Becoming a trustee should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. You can become involved in your community and help to change it in a positive way. Trustees can come from all walks of life - maybe you have just moved to the area or are recently retired, then this might be an opportunity for you to meet new people, learn new skills or use your invaluable existing skills in a cause or project that you believe in. Our charity’s mission is ‘to promote the well-being of all older people and help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’. If this is something that is equally important to yourself or maybe your life has been touched by the work of our organisation then please consider becoming a trustee. Alternatively, you may want to build on your CV with a fresh challenge, be looking to experience new, constructive, insights into the charity sector before a change of career or have expertise that may be of a benefit to our organisation. Most of all you will be part of a team as a trustee and will have the opportunity to add your unique skills and experience while learning from others too in an open, productive environment; either way this could be the ideal position for you. Age Concern in North Norfolk provides a day centre and lunch club, a befriending

service, a pop-in coffee morning and a variety of activities.

The four-day per week day centre offers personal care, laundry services, lunches and entertainment. The befriending service, funded by the Big Lottery, matches volunteers with isolated people who they visit at home thereby helping to relieve isolation and loneliness in our community. We have clubs across Cromer, Sheringham, and soon to be North Walsham, which provide companionship and activities for older people and an opportunity to get out and about. We often arrange outings and events as well as promoting regular intergenerational activities, fundraising and partner charity work. You can find information about the role of charity trustees at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ charity-commission. Whilst you need to have an interest in older people, applications are welcome from people with a wide variety of backgrounds.

Most importantly we want you to make a difference to not only our charity but to the whole of North Norfolk by promoting our mission and believing in a better life for everyone in later life, your skills and

North Norfolk Railway (The Poppy Line) Crossing the Line Appeal

A reminder, that our appeal for the two footbridges to be erected at our Holt and Sheringham stations remains open. The donations continue to come in and we are now just £3,700 short of our target. Our furthest flung donation has come from Australia and we have had considerable support from the local residents who have also contributed. I would like to thank all of our donors who have given so generously.

The bridge at Sheringham will replicate the original structure at the time of closure and will, along with the relocated signal box, help restore the railway presence at the main ‘gateway’ to the town to that of the 50s. The footbridge at Holt, replicating the M&GN bridge at Drayton, will substantially ease access to the station for visitors using our ‘overflow’ car park. Both bridges should also provide additional photographic opportunities for our visitors, as well as enhancing the look of the Railway.

Our current plans are to erect the Sheringham footbridge, in conjunction with the remodelling of the station. This will be contracted out as it is a fairly complex task and needs to be coordinated with the overall station ‘development’ as we do not want to have two sets of contractors trying to work in the same physical area at the same time. At Holt we intend to build the bridge whilst maintaining the width of the platforms as we have plans to lengthen the platforms on the Railway to enable us to cater for six coach trains in the future.

Just to reiterate the appeal fund is still open and if you haven’t already done so you can contribute through the shop on our website (www.nnr.co.uk), purchase shares (with enhanced privileges) or donate using Gift Aid which enables us to reclaim the tax on your donation, if you are a taxpayer. A donation of £1000, or over, will entitle you to a brass plaque, with a simple dedication

of your choice, to be fixed to whichever bridge you prefer. So please help us close the gap if you can. (More details of how to donate, if required, can be obtained by calling at Sheringham station or ringing 01263-820800)

I would again like to thank everyone who has contributed so generously to this project and ask anyone who has not, to consider doing so. This will enable us to convert our plans into reality. The recent Coastal Community Fund grant to the Railway was solely to improve employment prospects in the area and only covers the remodelling of the station at Sheringham and improvements to the boiler shop at Weybourne. The footbridge was not included.

Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of this year’s Blue Flag and Seaside Awards and once again, North Norfolk’s beaches are the place to be. Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts this year are Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and Sea Palling. The end of last month marked the three year anniversary since SiS launched the Angel Pack Initiative.

Incredibly, the packs have been used 44 times to help people in Sheringham!

Thanks you to everyone who has supported and encouraged us with the Angel Packs.

Thank you all for your support! If anyone would like a talk about Angel Packs for their group please let us know - we do this free of charge locally but a donation towards the Angel Packs is very welcome!

We held a fundraising tombola on 17 May as part of the Crab & Lobster Event and raised £144.38 profit, which will go towards keeping this Initiative alive.

inviting locals and visitors alike to spend an evening with Norfolk’s very own mardler in chief, Keith Skipper, who will be holding court at the Village Hall in East Runton.

Keith, who is well known as a freelance writer and radio broadcaster, will be regaling the audience with tales and wit about what it means to him to have been born and brought up in Norfolk.

No doubt he will be giving newcomers to the area a bit advice on how to ‘speak proper’. As if that is not enough, local man Bob Wright will be bringing his large collection of postcards and photographs portraying the village through the years.

Admission is £4.50 and tea, coffee and biscuits will be included.

Protecting North Norfolk’s Beach Huts

Beach huts, that most quintessentially British feature of our coastline, are making headlines these days. From appearing in TV adverts to shocking stories about six-figure price tags, they’re rarely out of the media. In recent years, beach huts in Norfolk have also made the headlines, but not always for the right reasons. The terrible storms and tidal surges of December 2013 wreaked havoc that’s all too fresh in the minds of many, with dozens of beach huts along the coast being reduced to matchwood. Since the storms, North Norfolk District Council has required hut owners to have at least £500 of insurance cover to pay for the removal of debris and site clearance, should such destructive weather

strike again. Previously, the cost burden fell upon council tax payers, with some feeling this unfairly subsidised beach hut owners.

It’s good to know that the beach ‘hutters’ of Norfolk can rest easy thanks to Love Your Hut. As a leading provider of beach hut insurance, they’ve made it their mission to help protect as many huts - and hutters - as possible. Their market-leading policy provides site clearance cover as standard. Love Your Huts’ senior underwriter and resident beach hut guru, Matthew Briggs, said “As a true hut enthusiast, I’m delighted that we’re supporting hutters in Norfolk. The hut community on this coast has been through a lot in recent times, and I’m proud of the fact we’re more than just a company that sells insurance. In fact, we’re rather obsessed with beach huts - after all, they’re a great British institution!”

VALUATION

Dear Margaret,

Electors in Sheringham North - It is a great honour to again be elected to serve Sheringham North on North Norfolk District Council for the next four years. As a local man brought up in Sheringham, and having raised my own family in Sheringham, I have a good knowledge and feel for the town, and I intend to work to keep this a thriving community and the incredibly nice place to live that it is. My part in that can only happen with your continued support, it does not stop at the ballot box. Again many thanks. Brian Hannah

Dear Margaret,

As candidates in the recent local elections, we would like to thank those who supported us over the campaign, particularly Joyce Corless but our sincerest thanks must go to those in Sheringham North who voted for us to take Sheringham forward. We ran a campaign solely on local issues, however, as the election ran concurrently with the general elections, it was national trends that unsurprisingly dominated the local election results. It was, however a heartening campaign. The good wishes we had from young and old, and particularly the support we had amongst first time voters engaging in politics for the first time - it makes it all worthwhile. We shall continue to support Sheringham and campaign on local issues effecting the town. Finally, our best wishes to Cllr's Hannah and Smith for the next four years. Many thanks Noel Gant and Callum Ringer (NNDC candidates, Labour - Sheringham North)

Dear Margaret,

I had the great pleasure of a front row seat at the recent St George's Day Concert, a wonderful concert showcasing the talent of many people in Sheringham. Mayor Tricia Brooks presented our group with £143 of the collection taken that evening. On behalf of Sheringham Playpark Revamp, I would like to thank Tricia for her much valued support over the last year and we hope she enjoys a well-earned rest now! Thank you to all who contributed to the collection. Regards Emma White, Sheringham Playpark Revamp

As part of the national Cherishing Churchyards week Thorpe Market Church will be welcoming visitors on 13 and 14 June to see the churchyard conservation areas when they are at their blooming best!

An excellent selection of used books are there to be browsed. On this occasion the church kitchen will be serving strawberry teas. Free entry. Church will be open to visitors on Saturday 13 June from 2pm and Sunday 14 June from 12 noon.

Twin Town Visit to Sheringham Twenty one Otterndorf residents from Sheringham’s twin town in Germany arrived by coach on 13 May 2015 for five nights on their biennial visit.

They were welcomed at a civic reception at the Community Centre by Deputy Town Mayor David Gooch, when gifts were exchanged. All the hosts and guest were invited to choose a cut out butterfly for them to hang on the apple trees presented to the town two years ago. Each butterfly had words describing different aspects of twinning on each side in both German and English. The varied programme included visits to the Sheringham Museum, Blickling Hall and Norwich. They travelled on the North Norfolk Railway, which included a very interesting tour of the Carriage and Wagon workshop at Weybourne. The visit this year coincided with the Crab and Lobster Festival. Guest and members attended the Variety Show at Cromer pier pavilion theatre after a fish and chip supper. They were then able to enjoy some of the many activities organised in Sheringham on their free day.

On the last night of their visit, a farewell BBQ was held at the home of Madeleine & Rex Ashcroft attended by over 40 visitors and hosts. We had all enjoyed a very busy and successful few days and we can now look forward and make preparations for a return visit to Otterndorf next year at the end of August.

For further information about this twinning and the 2016 visit please contact Evelyn Meakin (Chairman) Telephone 01263 823818

Rejuvenate, Rebalance, Restore Holistic Health Therapies

Hi, I’m Karen. I have recently moved to Norfolk from London where I have been working as an ITEC and Vodder trained registered therapist for 15 years. Based in Northrepps, I will now be working as a mobile therapist in Cromer, Sheringham, Overstrand, Mundesley, Holt and North Walsham.

My therapies include holistic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and manual lymph drainage (MLD), including compression bandaging and limb measuring for compression garments.

MLD is an extremely relaxing therapy, which affects the nervous system with direct analgesic (pain relieving) and stress relieving effects. MLD treatments are advised for pre and post-operative surgery, in particular facial surgery and liposuction, to improve healing and reduce the recovery time following surgery. Treatments help reduce fluid retention, swelling and puffiness, as well as inflammation and bruising. MLD is also treatment for lymphoedema and lipoedema and a variety of other conditions including constipation, IBS, migraine and sleep deprivation. MLD facials (non-surgical facelifts) are extremely relaxing, reducing dark circles, puffiness and sinusitis problems.

Holistic therapies have great physiological and psychological benefits. To book treatments and for information please contact me directly on 07583 973050 or via my website www.holistichealththerapies.co.uk or via www.mlduk.org.uk.

I look forward to meeting you soon. Karen Modle (Registered Therapist MLDUK)

At 17.12 hrs at the request of Humber Coastguard the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched to assist in the evacuation of persons seen to be trapped on the rock groyne at the east end of Sheringham off the ‘Tank’. As the lifeboat approached the groyne, the people managed to scramble ashore to safety and the lifeboat was stood down.

These rock groynes are covered with both barnacles and seaweed and are very slippery and have the potential to cause serious injury or entrapment.

Flying Feathers

Local chef Matt Warrington has played a variety of roles in his 25 years with the Sheringham Players, but dressing up as a vicar, surrounded by a bevy of scantily clad women, and hiding a body in a laundry basket is probably one of the most bizarre.

Although, claiming that "this was nothing new to him, he has just never done it on stage before", only goes to reflect Matt's wonderful sense of humour, characterisation, and slick delivery, which he brings to the role of the Reverend Roger Featherstone in Sheringham Players’ summer production of ‘Flying Feathers’, a farce by Derek Benfield, which will run at Sheringham Little Theatre from 17 - 20 June. Tickets are available from the Theatre Box Office.

The play follows on from their very successful spring production, and is set in the peaceful country house of the late lamented Bernard, brother to Chief Constable Henry Potterton and his sister, Sarah. When they arrive at the house they are astonished to find several scantily clad ladies wandering about, not knowing that during Bernard's temporary absence on a religious commune in the Orkneys, his housekeeper, Nora Winthrop, has turned the place into ‘a house of sin’.

As Nora is not expecting a visit from the Constable, and is fearful of the questions he will ask, she hastily tries to hide the truth from

him. This leads to many hilarious comings and goings involving one of her clients, who is dressed as a vicar, a window cleaner in a laundrette basket and a meek solicitor on horseback - not to mention the aforesaid scantily clad ladies. When Bernard also turns up from the Orkneys (or from heaven?), and it is seen that he and Henry are identical twins, the household is thrown into further confusion and chaos leading to an unexpected climax.

The play directed by Tim Travers, promises to be great evening’s entertainment filled with a wonderful blend of comedy, drama, misunderstandings, mix-ups, mayhem and surprises.

Liz Underdown - The Heart of the Band

Liz Underdown is the familiar face at the heart of the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and its sister ensemble, The Norfolk Jazz Quartet.

Her musical pedigree extends far beyond playing bass in the rhythm section of jazz bands however and, through her teaching, is able to develop and encourage many young and not so young musicians.

Liz started to play trumpet when she was eight years old and moved on to double bass following a demonstration at her school when she was ten. She thought it was an “unusual but cool instrument”. She was recruited to the Bromley Youth Chamber and Symphony Orchestra to play bass, which led to her playing at The Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and touring Austria and Spain. After leaving school, she gained a B.A. Hons. Degree in music from Exeter University and she is now a full-time school music teacher. Liz also plays piano, and is known

Local businesses come together for the Nelson’s Journey Smiles Awards

Over 170 people from 25 local businesses attended the inaugural Nelsons Journey Smiles Awards, last month at Sprowston Manor. The awards ceremony, which recognised the contribution ofthe local corporate community to the work of the charity, crowned winners in 8 categories, from 23 nominees, with one ‘Overall Impact Award’ winner being chosen from all those nominated.

The BBC’s David Whiteley presided over the awards, which were announced and handed over by members of Nelson’s Journey’s Youth Panel, a group of young volunteers, many of whom have used a service from the child bereavement charity. The judges of the awards included last year’s High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Pippa Dannatt and former HM Coroner for Norfolk, Bill Armstrong OBE.

Winners on the night included Aviva for the ‘Employee Contribution Award’, sponsored by East of England Co-op, recognising the support that their employees give to the charity,

everything from bake sales and helping with making resources, to offering a team of employees to help as ‘muscle’ during the move to Smiles House.

The husband and wife team Pippa and Mark Redmond at Norwich Print Solutions were awarded the ‘Major Sponsor Recognition Award’, sponsored by Almary Green and Smith & Pinching, for their work with the Nelson’s Journey Christmas Quiz, which has raised nearly £20,000 in three years. The judges felt that “for a small company to make such a massive and dedicated commitment to Nelson’s Journey over three years has to be commended.”

Overall winners on the night were Ashton KCJ who won the ‘Overall Impact Award’, sponsored by Ruth Elizabeth Events Ltd. This recognises the long-term commitment that the solicitors firm gave the charity by providing a ‘home’ for them within their Meridian Business Park offices. This saved Nelson’s Journey around £80,000 over the four years they spent at the firm. The judges commented that “Ashton KCJ provided a very considerable benefit in kind, never wavered from their support, despite the length of Nelson’s Journey’s tenure with them and the fact that staff members increased from five to 13, which is truly admirable.”

Gena Moore, Corporate Funding and Marketing Officer from Nelson’s Journey explained why the event was so important “It was brilliant to have business supporters, old and new, all in one place to be thanked and recognised by the charity. There was such a buzz all night long and all the guests were so generous. It was a real celebration and we thank everyone who was involved, especially the event’s sponsors. Each year we receive more and more support from local companies, and last year we saw over £115,000 raised from the business community in Norfolk. In addition to this we also had support through employee volunteering and donations of resources and services, saving us even more money. This backing is invaluable in allowing us to help the growing numbers of children and young people who are referred to us each year for bereavement support.”

For more information about Nelson’s Journey, please visit their website at www.nelsonsjourney.org.uk.

As I write this it’s a beautiful early summer’s day. The cricket season is well underway and we are delighted to be sponsoring Cromer First XI this season, including their overseas players Damien and his wife Michaela who are also working at the Grove for the next few months.

We have had a very busy start to the season and as usual we have been busy recruiting staff members to cope with the summer demand. We have also been joined by a parrot, who is yet to be seen but has been making himself heard by wolf-whistling at the Orchard Room guests as they make their way down for breakfast. The parrot has set up home in a large bay tree in the Secret Garden and will provide accompaniment to our wonderful al fresco

The parrot hasn’t developed a taste for crab yet, which is fortunate because as usual this superb Cromer delicacy is very, very popular. And a slightly more unusual way to try it is as potted crab as this recipe shows.

Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Ingredients • 400g crabmeat • large pinch cayenne pepper • zest and juice of ½ lemon • 300g butter • fresh parsley leaves, to decorate

Method Combine crab, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and zest, and season well.

Pack into 8 small or 1 large ramekin.

Benson and RAF Cadets visit the Red Arrows

On 18 May, nine Royal Air Force cadets from Greshams school accompanied by the Contingent Commander Squadron Leader, David Bailey and Benson the school Labrador, visited the home of the Red Arrows for a tour and Aerobatic display.

The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, is one of the world's premier aerobatic display teams and the visit was arranged by Mr David Boyce who himself is an honorary member of the Red Arrows. During their visit to RAF Scampton, the cadets had a comprehensive tour of the engineering wing followed by a photo shoot with the Red Arrows team.

Melt the butter, then pour over until the crab is covered with a thin film.

Top with a parsley leaf, then cool in the fridge.

St Andrew's Ladies’ Association

At our April meeting, we once again welcomed Mike Crowe who has an abundance of interesting tales to tell, having been around the world more than once.

We began in Nepal, that poor country ravaged by earthquakes recently. Mike told us that the bridges there were made of string, obviously very difficult to negotiate, and that when he had a celebration meal there, first of all he had to catch the chicken to eat! Kathmandu was then a beautiful city and the people charming. Onward to China to see the Terracotta Army and the luxury hotels in Bejing, then to Malaysia, Borneo and Australia, where he travelled from south to north by train and encountered two feet of rain in two days.

He visited New Zealand and spent Christmas in Hongkong, enduring quite primitive living conditions along the way - he kept us amused regarding sanitary conditions around the world!

On 12 May, our social evening arranged by Hazel and Judith was great

fun, even if lots of us did not know all the answers.

Chess Challenge success for Norfolk schoolboy

An eight year old pupil, who has been competing in Chess Tournaments since he was five, has just become Supremo Chess Champion in the U8 division of the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge 2015 Megafinal XVII in Norfolk. Oscar Ellis, from Oulton, who attends Gresham’s Pre-Prep in Holt, will now qualify for the Northern Gigafinal which takes place Oscar with his trophy in Manchester in July. Oscar, who is a member of Norwich Junior Chess Club, was very leased with his achievement saying "The trophy is bigger and shinier this year!" This was the third time Oscar participated in this competition, which is now in its 20th year. In 2012, when he was five, he came second in the U7 section. In 2014, he was the Supremo in the U7 category and went on to compete in the Gigafinal, where he came 5th out of 42 competitors, reaching the last 2000 out of an original entry of 55,000 players! This year, he took first place in the U8 event winning a trophy and a rosette having scored five out of a maximum of six points. The UK Chess Challenge began in 1996 with 700 schools entering, involving about 23,000 children. The numbers have continued to grow with now more than 2,000 schools currently taking part. Seven rounds are played, during which time children win badges, spots, mascots and other prizes. All ages can take part with the qualifiers for the Megafinals being the top scorers in the tournament across each age group from U7 to U18. The best players can then go through to the area Megafinal and if successful on to the North/South Gigafinal and National Terafinal.

Cromer Nalu Bead Competition!

Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer, together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ company Nalu Beads, ran a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer!

Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe, and worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that haracterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place.

Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘We were overwhelmed by the response to this competition and by the standard of the entries’.

was just amazing’.

‘We all have different takes on things, and to some, the representation of Cromer was the cliffs, others the sea, the pier, and obviously crabs came into it a lot as well’.

‘The choice of colours used across the entries was varied too, as they took in the mood of the area, blues, greys, yellows, browns and oranges, all having relevance’.

‘We wanted to create an amazing bead that was unique to Cromer, and seeing how people had thought about what Cromer meant to them and then transferring that visually,

Sheringham Independent 417 June 6th 2015

Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis was really impressed with the top five selected entries. ‘We loved all five designs as they all represented Cromer really well, but the winning design was also the best for working in glass, as

well as fitting nicely into the rest of the UK bead range’

So, the overall winner was 11 year old Juliet Price Thomas of Cromer whose design incorporated, the sea, the sun, surfing and the famous Cromer crabs. Not only will Juliet’s bead be produced in time for the summer season but she also receives the first prize of £100 worth of Nalu Beads.

Rhiannon added ‘Although Juliet’s bead was the overall winner we thought the other four were amazing too so have provided a prize for each of them also’.

Phil and Kay of Wet Dog would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition for supporting it with such passion. Cromer truly is an inspirational place.

Celebrating 25 Years of Steam in the Bure Valley

When British Railways closed the line from Wroxham to Aylsham in 1982 and the track was lifted in 1984, many thought this to be the end of the route as a railway. Through the vision and drive of a committed group of enthusiasts and collaboration with a supportive local authority, the 15” gauge Bure Valley Railway was opened on 10th July 1990. The railway had a fleet of new, high quality, purpose built coaches, but no locomotives to haul them. To overcome this problem, locomotives were hired in from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years after opening the Bure Valley Railway is steaming ahead and will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on 10th July 2015.

To celebrate this milestone the Railway will hold its Steam Back in Time event on Friday 10th July. This event will see the return to Norfolk of Winston Churchill from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, the locomotive which hauled the very first train. All passengers on this day only will travel at the same fares as when the Railway first opened in 1990 (Adults £5.50, Juniors £3.95 and Under 5’s Free).

The celebrations will continue over the weekend of 11th & 12th July with a Steam Gala including two engines visiting from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent, In addition to Winston Churchill, Green Goddess will also make a return to Norfolk. They will be hauling trains alongside the home fleet of Bure Valley Railway engines with an intensive service in operation on both days (Adults £12.50, Juniors £6.50 and Under 5s Free).

Andrew Barnes, General Manager of the Railway, says “through the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the Railway has developed into a thriving and self-sustaining tourist attraction for all ages. The scale of our trains are very popular with the younger audience and our disabled coaches allow wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers to travel together.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Since the last issue, several cats that had gone missing in the area have been reunited with their owners, primarily because they were micro chipped. In one instance, one of the cats re-homed by us had been missing for several years and you may have read about this in the local press. Tookey, one of the older girls in care

Another, unbeknown to his owner, had taken up residence under her car and ran off when she stopped at traffic lights. This was another instance, where it was possible to reunite cat with owner, because he was chipped. We were also able to confirm that another runaway was indeed one recently re-homed by us who had escaped while her owner was fitting a cat flap.

Several other cats have been posted as missing on the face book pages of local vets and it has been a relief to see that these too have been found. It increases the odds of finding your cat if you do get it chipped (the vets very often have special deals for this) and then, should it go missing, advise your neighbour(s), the local vets, Animal Rescue websites (we have a link to one on the Lost and Found page on our website) and even post it on face book. These are good ways to achieve a successful outcome.

Because Cats Protection see so many unwanted kittens each year, our head office is working with the Pet Advertising Advisory Group to try and identify where cats are used to repeatedly breed kittens for commercial gain. They are also concerned at the number of adverts that go online offering kittens, usually for sale for a lot of money, that are for instance “part Persian” or “part Bengal” as when you look at the photo you can only see a sweet little moggie. They are at present talking with volunteers across the country to trying to find where this is happening and intend to use the information to protect the cats and prevent poorly kittens being bred. They will be sharing this information with government to hopefully introduce changes in the law to prevent this. Over the years some of the mums and kittens that have arrived

in our care have not been well looked after, so we welcome this initiative and hope they succeed in their aims.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have ny other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 a person can make a claim if they fall into one of six categories:-

01263 761905 or 07917 809237

CONTACT PETE ON

Where there is a Will there is a way! In today’s litigious society there is an increasing possibility of relatives making a claim against an estate. This is on the basis that the deceased did not make reasonable provision for them in their Will and can make an estate administration long and expensive.

All building, decorating & garden landscaping services

the death was being maintained by the deceased.

The claimant has to show the Court that under the Will the deceased did not make reasonable financial provision for them.

The Judicial and Court Statistics published in 2010 appear to show that there has not been a significant increase in the number of claims being issued in Court. However, this view is not necessarily shared by probate lawyers (or their indemnity insurers) who are adamant there has been a huge increase in clients with probate issues. So how can you avoid your estate being faced with a claim?

Making a Will for your dependants will ensure that the whole of your estate is available to provide for your loved ones. However, it may be that you wish to ensure certain people do not benefit. If your Will omits someone who falls within one of the above categories, they may

be able to claim against your Estate. In order to help protect against this possibility you can either make it clear in the Will or in a separate document why you are excluding that person. There are also additional precautions that can be taken to ensure that the validity of the Will is not contested in the future. It is therefore better to pay for a properly prepared Will than allow your Estate to face a costly claim in the future. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact our Private Client Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01692 503081. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our office or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Ken traced the history of examination boards from 1857/58 when the Oxford and Cambridge boards were formed, initially just to facilitate entry to the universities. The first female applicant was not considered till 1868, and the first examination certificates not issued till 1918. The board then became one of the main examiners of secondary school children with its School Certificate. The Cambridge Board covered the empire and later a lot of the world with examination expertise .Many countries still relies on Cambridge for help, advice, and the setting and marking of papers. The board generates a large income for the university, Ken ended his talk with statistics which revealed facts about dealing with countries all over the world, and how ‘’rights of appeal’’ worked. He was thanked by members for his talk after several questions were answered.

The Probus Club meets once a month on the third Thursday of each month at the Dales Hotel and is open to all retired or semi-retired business and professional people. They warmly welcome new members, if you are interested contact John Whittington on 01263 820333

After a delicious meal, the guest speaker was the secretary of the Club Ken Murray. Ken’s talk was entitled ‘’A World of Examination’’ he explained to the club that he had for many years worked as an administrator for the Cambridge Examination Board. During his work for the board he had visited 44 countries and spent an average of three months each year abroad.

From Snails to Pizzas

Aylsham High School’s Nurture Group had a great time making pizza last month as part of a visit from representatives of Aylsham’s Cittaslow Committee. Giles Margarson, chairman of the Committee, was accompanied by Mo Anderson-Dungar and Town Clerk, Sue Lake, between them explaining what Cittaslow is all about and how it benefits the town.

Rather than just a talk though, Giles, Mo and Sue used the pizzas as a metaphor for how the community comes together via Cittaslow: the pizza base represented Aylsham itself, the tomato paste the town’s infrastructure while the toppings are the local people. Cittaslow’s emblem of a snail was also discussed with the youngsters learning that ‘Cittaslow’ translates as ‘Slow Town’ so the use of the snail emblem is particularly appropriate.

The local community and its infrastructure was further highlighted by a discussion on how money spent with local businesses in the town often stays in the town to support the local economy.

Commenting on the event, the High School’s Head of Nurture, Danny Sweatman said “What a fabulous afternoon! Thank you Giles, Mo and Sue for providing such an interesting talk pitched perfectly for our young people. They thoroughly enjoyed it and I know they will now be very keen to do what they can to support our community even further.”

Aylsham is currently one of only five towns in the UK which have met the strict entry criteria of the Cittaslow movement, that internationally includes 147 towns in 24 countries. Cittaslow status is an accreditation that acknowledges the dedication and commitment of community members who work hard to make their part of the world a healthier, greener, happier, slower place to inhabit. There is more information at www.cittaslow.org.uk or locally contact Aylsham Town Clerk, Sue Lake at townclerk@aylsham-tc.gov.uk

ALL AMERICAN AT MANNINGTON HALL

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are going all American this July with two exciting events in north Norfolk. On Saturday 4 July, Independence Day, they have a Garden Party at Mannington Hall by kind invitation of Lord and Lady Walpole. The grounds will be open from 2pm to 5pm for you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Mannington Gardens. Tea and cake will be provided. There will be music throughout the afternoon. The choir will sing on two occasions and there will be incidental piano music from Geoff Cummings-Knight all with an Americana flavour as befits the day. Almost certainly the choir will provide one or two “tasters” to come from their Summer Americana Gala concert at the Auden Theatre the following weekend, Sunday 12 July at 6.30pm. This concert will provide a sumptuous tour of 20th Century American music ranging from Negro Spirituals from Michael Tippet’s A Child of our Time to Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei (choral version of his famous Adagio) and lots of lovely George Gershwin songs including excerpts from Porgy and Bess and popular standards such as I got rhythm and Someone to Watch over me. And the orchestra will play the Largo from Dvorak’s New World Symphony. It has become something of a tradition for SCCS summer gala concerts to include an extended interval so that performers and audience can enjoy a picnic on the lawns outside the theatre. What better way to spend a summer Sunday evening?! Wine (by the glass or bottle) will be available from the bar. For more information visitwww.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk Ticket Information: Independence Day Garden Party tickets £10 (£5 children under 14) ADVANCE PURCHASE ONLY from Mannington Hall Box Office Telephone 01263 584175 Email admin@walpoleestate.co.uk Summer Americana Gala Concert tickets £15 (students £12 UNDER 18’s FREE) from The Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 Email boxoffice@greshams.com
