New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

2015/16 Pre-season has started brightly for growing club Sheringham FC.

With the announcement of new manager Roy Bevis and his father Paddy Bevis to take on the first team, Sheringham hopes last season’s relegation to be a shortlived blip. Roy Bevis has fond memories of playing at the club. In his first season the team ended up at Carrow Road playing in the Senior Cup final, and his second season being part of the team that won the Sterry Cup. Roy has played at Gillingham, Fakenham, Wroxham, Diss and Norwich United. His father Paddy also has a history of management at Hempnall, Attleborough and briefly at North Walsham. With the growing number of youth teams at Sheringham, enthusiastic Bevis is keen to encourage the local talent coming through the ranks and seeing them get experience in the A Team, Reserves and hopefully first team over time.

Sheringham FC

Continued from front cover... The 2015/16 season starts brightly as the Shannocks are also adding strength to the club by using the services of local man Ben Price of Fast Forward Sports. Each team from the Under 7s through to the first team will benefit from coaching sessions throughout the season, supporting all managers, bringing consistency and development for all players. Ben Price comes with a depth of experience training starting his footballing career at NCFC academy, released at 16, playing at Southend United, Billericay Town, Cambridge City, Mildenhall, Sheringham FC and spending the last two years at Wroxham FC, the recent Senior Cup winners. Price started working in football at just 16 when he became a Level 1 coach, going onto his Level 2 where he worked for four years coaching for NCFC and gaining his UEFA B football coaching license. Nine months ago he set up Fast Forward Sports. Price’s team consists of Matt Halliday and Cedric Anselin.

The first team will see Price at matches home and away to support Bevis and the management team. Pre-season training is from Tuesday 16 June for all adult sides.

This investment in players and teams moves the club closer to feeding our local talent into the adult sides and providing good football in Sheringham for future years.

Sheringham FC now has excellent facilities with the recent addition of the Sports Associations Multi Games Sports Area (M.U.G.A). Using the M.U.G.A allows the club to stay off the grass pitches, resting them for matches and provides all weather training throughout the winter.

Despite the difficulties of the flagship first team over the last few seasons, this does not reflect the strength of the club. SFC has grown over three years from just two adult teams to 13 teams strong, now providing football for over 150+ local people. In addition to this, the club runs an FA Mash Up session for Under 14s and Mini Kickers for 4 to 6 year olds. It has taken a lot of time and effort to make the club sustainable and the rapid growth has required a lot of volunteers getting on board and working together. We are also very grateful to those local businesses who have supported us

over the last few seasons, helping us fund the rents, provide match day food, equipment and the many costs in running the club.

SFC are running their first Youth Football Tournament on Sunday 9 August for Under 8s to Under 11s, and a few spaces still available. We have a Fundraising Ball on 10th October at Pinewoods, and a sponsored run over the summer holidays to raise club funds.

SFC are looking for an Under 14s manager and assistant to start a new team, and more players in particular for our current Under 13s. More volunteers to help with pitch and match day prep, refreshments, fundraising and admin. We are looking for more local businesses to sponsor kits and/or buy advertising boards and just get behind the club.

If you have some spare time or wish to sponsor a team please get in contact with Sally Middleton 01263 588334.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

While we have had some kittens come into care this year, their numbers have been less than normal. We do, however, have several more litters waiting to come in once they are old enough to leave their mothers, who are often then neutered with help from the branch. The kittens will have a health check at the vets and be chipped and vaccinated at our expense, before going to a new home. When we take the kittens into care we are always happy to help their owners with the neutering of the mother cats. Unfortunately, not all kittens receive this level of care before finding a new home as, sadly, many are re-homed without any checks being made and the mother cat has litter after litter, which is not much of a life for her.

We recently took in two young cats and a kitten from a household where there were health problems, which meant they could not keep them. While talking to the owner it became clear that he did not realize, until after his young cats became pregnant, that a cat can get pregnant from about 4 months old. We know that a lot of people are not aware of this and, as a consequence, many young cats do get pregnant before they have finished growing themselves. It does indeed stunt their kittens’ growth and they are often smaller than normal and do not thrive so well. The owner wished he had known this as he would have taken action to try and prevent his lovely, well cared for cats, from having kittens.

On 5th July we will be holding the Hog Roast at Dilham once again. Tickets can be obtained via Stephanie on the ‘cat phone’. If you wish to attend please call her as numbers are limited. We also have many other fund raising events in the pipeline including a stall at the Fun Day in North Walsham on 28 June.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

It looks as if summer is finally here the weather is improving and we are beginning to see local strawberries for sale to I thought it was time to give you one of my own favourite desserts recipies, Shortbread with Strawberries and Cream. The White Horse is now in summer mode our new menu will be available in a couple of weeks time and we now planning our very popular Strictly Norfolk Week which celebrates the very best of Norfolk produce and Norfolk Ales.

This special week of Norfolk dishes commences on Monday 6th July and runs until Sunday 12th July. Our Beer Festival which this year is 31 July - 4 August is all about ‘Real Ales’ choosing the very best that Norfolk has to offer and this year bringing them all together in a marque in the garden, so they can be enjoyed ‘alfresco’ or around a table in the bar with friends and family. Don’t forget the Overstrand Village Yard sale on Sunday

12th July and remember to collect your free map from the White Horse before setting off around the village and of course book your lunch table before you go.

Nathan’s June Recipe for

Shortbread

Delicious with Strawberries and Cream

Ingredients 225g Plain Flour 75g Caster Sugar One Vanilla Pod 150g Unsalted Butter 50g Granulated Sugar

Method Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the caster sugar. Scrape the vanilla seeds from the pod into the bowl and add butter. Mix the ingredients together using your fingers or with a food mixer on low speed. Roll out to about 1cm thickness and cut into 15cm oblongs, place on baking sheet and bake for about 25

On Saturday 30 May Sheringham Shantymen held a concert at the Lighthouse on Cromer Road to celebrate their 25th Anniversary

They sang songs, old and new, to a packed house with over 250 people attending and enjoying the evening. The setting was full of atmosphere with the Shantymen backlit against the backdrop of this unusual modern building. The acoustics were perfect.

The concert was enhanced further by a slideshow presentation giving captions and pictures from the groups travels- tours which took them from Falmouth to Wicklow and international destinations from Europe to the United States.

One of the many highlights of the evening was a song especially written for this anniversary by Terry Read. It was appropriately called ‘Sheringham Boys’ and chronicled their 25 year history. The retiring collection raised £800 which will go towards Community projects run by the church, especially youth and children’s work.

Sheringham Classic Car Show

To conclude, an emotional vote of thanks was given by Bryan Farrow, leader of the Shantymen. The evening ended with calls for an ‘encore’ and the ‘Sheringham Boys’ sang their final song to thunderous applause. Wonderful! Elaine Fisher

Condoms to Coffins

After an excellent lunch, Holt and District Probus Club were entertained at The Feathers on 4 June by a fascinating talk from Martyn Fox.

Martyn has been associated with Keys auctioneers for over 30 years. He started as founder Geoffrey Keys’ assistant and now is a consultant with the firm, working part time, which gives him time to do a lot of charity work (for which he was awarded MBE in 2008) and to talk to clubs and groups.

Titled ‘Condoms to Coffins’, his talk referred to just two of the things he has had to sell by auction over the years. His main work has been selling insolvent stock - but he is also Keys’ wine sales specialist.

Martyn Fox and Probus acting The talk was well sprinkled with Chairman Bob Ward - with humour and was also illustrated with their respective gavels a pretend auction when two members of the Club were set up to dispute a bid for an imaginary item of furniture. The printed conditions of sale contain the solution to this and other difficulties that sometimes arise.

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

St Andrew's Ladies' Association

We were very grateful to Brian Hedge who came to our 26 May meeting at short notice and gave us another interesting evening with his wonderful ‘English Country Gardens’.

We saw Beth Chatto's five acre garden which began in 1960, as well as Hidcote Manor, started in 1907 and which has a series of outdoor rooms, Compton Acres, the birth place of Scouting and several other well known gardens open to the public.

We so enjoy his commentary as well as the wonderful photography, and hope he will be back again to show us the history of Sheringham. Dates for your diary: 2, 3 and 4 July - Flower Festival Stall (helpers needed) 28 July - Social Evening

At our June meeting, the talk was ‘Mishaps and Misdemeanors of Shannocks’ by Sheringham Town councillor, Mr. Peter Cox not to worry, no current names were revealed from council records as Mr Cox strictly adheres to the 100 year rule on information available in the public domain. The information he shared was gleaned from at least 200 hours researching public records for each of 10 years.

In 2015, the population in Sheringham was 27,500 - in 1715 the population was 150. Mr. Cox described the early settlers as violent, reckless boozers living in bare cottages with no water. Water was obtained from the beck off the common and later the reservoir where the town clock now stands. In the 1811 Enclosure Act, 400 people lived in a few streets. The 1838 Tithe map showed 600 people while the 1841 census listed 607 people in 127 households. The 1861 census listed 912 people with 175 shown as inshore fishermen - the most at any one time.

Between 1700-1820 there was an ale house (possibly where Two Lifeboats is now

located) with a history of being a house of ill repute with marriages arranged after childbirth or not at all. Many births were not recorded, one curate did not record any births in 1723. The poor were returned to their place of birth to receive relief - their legal place of settlement.

In 1813, 600 casks of jenever (gin) was captured being smuggled onto one of Sheringham's piers (docks?).

In 1814 the arrival of the Upchers to Upper Sheringham changed things. The first Christmas Mr Upcher gave sheep and coal to the poor and vaccinated children against smallpox. He also paid for their education. The poor had previously gone to Beeston Priory for charity. The arrival of the railway then changed Sheringham from a small village into a town.

As you can see, it is amazing what public records can reveal about the previously unknown history of a picture postcard Sheringham. Now it is up to Peter Cox to publish another local history book about these lesser-known events in Sheringham's past!

Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I am immensely proud to have been re-elected as Leader of the Council, and have great faith in the newly appointed Cabinet to build on the great strides the Council has made in the last four years. Our priorities will be firmly focussed on continuing to look after our beautiful and unique coast and countryside with a view to attracting funding to protect it for future generations, encouraging inward investment to boost our local economy and create jobs, empowering local communities to make their own decisions and ensuring that everyone in North Norfolk has the opportunity to buy or rent a decent home in a community where they want to live and work. The Society has in recent years held a ‘three way’ competition with two other clubs, Kings Lynn and Lutterworth.

This takes some organising, because 20 images in digital form (for projection) from each club are exchanged with all three clubs, who hold three separate competitions at their own places, with three separate judges.

The total marks given to each club by each judge are added up and a winner is then announced.

On 22 May, the North Norfolk Society learned that they were Howard Denner’s photo winners, by a comfortable of Esperanza Spalding margin. They gained a total of 981 points, against 955 for Lutterworth and 926 for Kings Lynn.

Special credit went to Howard Denner’s superb photograph of Esperanza Spalding at the Barbican Centre, which earned 20 out of 20 points from two of the judges and 19 from the third.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com.

Carry on Sargeant!

On Friday 3 July, one of the cleverest of all keyboard entertainers will be playing at the Briston Organ Shows for the first time!

James Sargeant has been a top name in the organ world for quite few years, using top instruments including the legendary Hammond organ. He now plays the Yamaha TRX system - a virtual organ made by connecting two keyboards (one of them the latest Yamaha Tyros) together with a bass pedalboard. He plays all styles of music, but his particular loves include Big Band and the thrilling 'Hammond' styles, with some classics and light music thrown in for good measure. Reviews of his shows suggest he is 'one of the most exciting keyboard players ever’ so if you like great music played live, this is a show you must not miss.

It is at the Copeman Centre, Briston, on Friday 3 July, starting at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm). Advance booking for these shows is now almost essential as they are proving so popular. Tickets are ÂŁ6 - accompanied under 16s get in free! - and can be booked by telephoning 01263 860844.

As usual, proceeds from the excellent raffle and refreshments will benefit the Copeman Centre's own fundraising, so everyone is a winner! Sheringham Independent 418 June 27th 2015

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

PAINTING PARADISE: THE ART OF THE GARDEN

wheelbarrow and gardening tools used by Queen Victoria as a child.

The exhibition divides the history of the garden into broad chronological sections including the splendour of the Renaissance garden with its sophistication and formality and its fascination with labyrinths and topiary, knot gardens and obelisks. It speaks of an age when the garden first became a royal status symbol.

A trip to London to visit the Chelsea Flower Show gave me the opportunity to see the changing of the guard and an excellent ‘gardening’ exhibition in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

Then there are the botanic gardens which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, as ships returned from the West Indies, North America and the East, laden with new species, both eye-catchingly beautiful and medicinally useful and also the great baroque gardens with their parterres and box hedges, their tree-flanked walkways and canal-fed fountains all laid out on a previously unimaginable scale.

The exhibition draws on the many riches of the Royal Collection, bringing together a wide selection of treasures – primarily paintings and drawings but with manuscripts, tapestries, furniture, porcelain, jewellery and even the tiny

This was followed by the horticultural profusions of the 19th century, when England became a green-fingered nation and the informal cottage gardens of both royal and commoner alike became the backdrops of family life.

help to illustrate this chronology. There are botanical drawings by Leonardo; a Rembrandt painting that depicts the newly risen Christ as a gardener complete with sunhat and spade and pruning knife; Gainsborough presents the Duke of Cumberland and his wife parading elegantly through a sylvan haven. The designers of Sevres porcelain play with a fanciful host of floral patterns, while Faberge captures the lily of the valley flower heads in delicate sprays of gilded pearls. Whether you are interested in the way they placed cloches in the 18th century, the political influence of the pineapple or the history of knot garden patterns this is an informative and fascinating show and it even includesa mention for North Norfolk. A manuscript presented to Queen Alexandra, which contains Francis Bacon’s classic garden essay (‘God Almighty first planted a Garden and indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures. It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man’ etc) is accompanied by a painting of a floral border at Sandringham.

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July.

The festivals have been running for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance, to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk.

Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of over £13,500 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham Woodfields School. This year we will be giving donations to both Sheringham Woodfields School and Sheringham Playpark Revamp Project.

Every year the floral arrangements of the festivalare designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was ‘Journeys and Adventures’ and our photos from the festival give a flavour

the Antarctic.

of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject. The first depicts a journey across the wilderness before reaching a beautiful oasis and the second a journey across

This year’s Festival theme, ‘A Touch of Wonder’ will be depicted by around 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.

Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from

donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members. Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club

The Probus Club of Cromer and Sheringham held its AGM at The Links Hotel, West Runton on Tuesday, 2 June and, after the usual formal business, the outgoing Chairman, Geoff Mather, handed over the Chain of Office to Ron Coleman for the ensuing year.

Dave Vickery then made a presentation on behalf of Club members to John Bolton-Maggs on the occasion of his last Probus meeting after 32 years of membership, to which the latter responded with a short and amusing valedictory speech.

The Cromer and Sheringham Club is open to all retired and nearly retired business and professional men, and if you are thinking of giving us a try, here are a few things to bear in mind:

We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER«

• You will NOT be expected to raise / collect / donate money to causes - we don't do that sort of thing. • All our subscriptions remain for use within our club - we don't pay any fees to any Probus organisation. • You will hear a series of speakers on a variety of topics. • You will be served a high quality lunch at a very reasonable fixed price at each monthly meeting. • You will meet a friendly and sociable group of men in a relaxed environment.

Please have a look at our website, www.candsprobus.club for the latest information or call Dave Vickery (Lunch Secretary) on 01263 824306.

Orchestras Live North Norfolk

This year, North Norfolk is again hosting , a series of the highest quality orchestral concerts developed by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) in partnership with Orchestras Live and community organisations.

The concerts will be taking place in Ludham in July, Trunch in October and Cromer in November.

The series begins on Wednesday 15 July by welcoming back the internationally acclaimed European Union Chamber Orchestra (EUOC) to the beautiful village of Ludham. For a contrasting and enthralling evening, don’t miss Warlock’s captivating Capriol Suite and the eloquent interpretation of stunning classics by Mozart and Haydn, as well as the performance of a specially-commissioned orchestral piece by local composer Jane Wells combining talented young instrumentalists with the EUCO professionals.

With the exceptional acoustics of St Botolph’s Church in Trunch, audiences on Saturday 10 October will be left spellbound by the world class wind soloists from Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment performing an evening of masterpieces by Mozart and Myslivecek.

The series concludes on Saturday 28 November at Cromer Parish Church with the much anticipated return of the exceptionally talented London Mozart Players, this year performing with Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society. A finale guaranteed to be an exciting evening of 20th century classics including the beautiful Vespers by Norfolkbased composer Richard Allain, showcasing north Norfolk’s most illustrious choral tones.

Watsons Branch Manager says Thank You to Seaview PreSchool

On Wednesday 3rd June, Caroline Lake, branch manager at Watsons Property, Cromer, paid a visit to Seaview PreSchool in Cromer to say a big thank you to all the children for designing and decorating their ship’s wheel which forms part of the ‘The Wheely Wonderful Ship’s Wheel Art Trail’ around Cromer through the summer, as a part of the Cromer & Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival.

Chrystal Howes, senior practitioner for Seaview Pre-school commented “This has been a really fantastic opportunity to work with Watsons Property, the children were very excited about decorating the ship’s wheel. We needed to consider our very 22

young age group of 2-4yrs, so it all started with the children sticking coloured pieces of paper all over the wheel and then each child created their own butterfly with their face on it, and these were all then stuck on too. We are very proud of how it has turned out and we really did have a wonderful time creating it. With the help of donations from parents we are really hoping we will be able to bid and win the wheel back for our school”.

When the trail finishes, all the wheels around Cromer will be auctioned off with all funds raised being donated to local charities & organisations.

Holkham Celebrates Anniversary of Signing of the Magna Carta

The Historic Houses Association’s (HHA) member houses, including Holkham Hall, are hosting special events this year to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.

You are invited to follow in the footsteps of families who have played a pivotal role in paving the way for the rights we enjoy today. Sir Edward Coke Holkham Hall will be holding an exhibition on the role of Sir Edward Coke, one of England’s foremost jurists, and founder of the family fortunes for his Coke descendants, later the Earls of Leicester, at Holkham. His reinterpretation and use of Magna Carta helped to limit the powers of the Stuart kings and, when opposing them, he used Magna Carta to help draw up The Petition of Rights. The exhibition will include some of his manuscripts and books from the Library and Archives, demonstrating the crucial importance that he attached to Magna Carta.

In 1628, as a precondition to granting any future taxes, parliament forced King Charles I to assent to The Petition of Rights. This asked for a settlement of parliament’s complaints against the King’s nonparliamentary taxation and imprisonments without trial, plus the unlawfulness of martial law and forced billets.

More than 100 years later, the cry at the Boston Tea Party of “no taxation without representation” highlighted one of the major grievances of the American colonies and so provides a direct link back to Sir Edward Coke’s interpretation of Clause 12 of Magna Carta from the original 1215 manuscript.

Holkham’s exhibition will run from 14 June to 29 October. It is part of the nationwide event, LiberTeas, where we take tea to celebrate the role of Magna Carta in protecting our liberties.

St Peter’s (Sheringham) Choir at St Paul’s Cathedral!

Recently, our Choir took part in a Festival Service in St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

This had been 18 months in the planning, and it was well worth the wait. As you can imagine, this was a tremendous occasion for us all, especially as many of our choristers had never been inside St Paul’s before. This was also the first time that several had experienced singing in a massed choir of several hundred, in a large venue (and they don’t come much bigger than this!).

The 9-second acoustic was both amazing to hear and challenging to sing in, as the sound seems to come back at you from all angles. I have to say that the Choir flew the Sheringham St Peter’s flag fantastically well and I am incredibly proud of them! Lys Morgan-Hart (Director of Music)

Thoughts on the day from our choristers…

“It was such a moving, uplifting and spiritual experience, never to be forgotten.”

“The sound under that dome was amazing, like a singing bowl. I loved every minute of the day and will remember it forever.”

“What a wonderful, moving experience. It was a sheer delight to sing in such a magnificent place! A memory that will be with me for ever.”

“It was great to be a chorister for the day at St. Paul’s; to be able to sing in a building where you get surround sound.”

“An incredible, amazing experience, and I now just want to do it all over again.” “Phenomenal”

Sophie Li-Rocchi, Head of Art at Gresham’s Prep said "It has been very exciting to have our very own GoGoDragon to decorate for the Norwich art trail. It has captured the imagination of the whole school and everyone has enjoyed watching Hopper come to life. The pupils have been inspired with some amazing designs and I am really proud of their creative efforts and interest. We can't wait to see our dragon on display and look forward to having him return to live with us at the school in September."

Sam had to compete against 70 other entrants to win this major national festival, which took place from 29 – 31 May.

As a finalist, Sam had the opportunity to work with the composer, Judith Bingham on his song, On the Grasshopper and Cricket, a setting of the sonnet by John Keats, which was then performed at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, Shropshire. Sam is a student member of the Royal College of Organists and earlier this year he was also awarded the prestigious Saxton Noble Memorial prize for gaining the highest mark in Norfolk in his grade 7 music exams, on the organ. He also enjoys jazz piano, plays trombone in the school brass ensemble and jazz group and studies singing.

Crab & Lobster Festival News! This year’s Crab & Lobster Festival was a super-smashing success, magically supported by superb sunny weather!

The opening concert at the Pier Pavilion Theatre was generously hosted by BBC’s David Whiteley and played to a packed house. The entertainment line-up offered something for everyone - with comedian Pat Nearney, Marlene’s Dancers, My Bad Sister, Backdrafts and The Sheringham Shantymen. We laughed, sang and stomped our feet to a truly superb evening’s entertainment.

The weekend continued in Cromer with top chef’s preparing delectable seafood dishes, market stalls and food samples, live music from The Old Wild Rovers and The Broken Maps, crab sandwiches, Punch & Judy, IFCA giant fishtank, heritage demonstrations, crab dressing, Woodforde’s Bar and Paella Night, with entertainment from the fabulous Fishwives Choir and

In Sheringham around The Lobster Pub, there was a friendly let-yourhair-down “village fete” at-

mosphere to attract the crowds with local chefs, ethnic foods, crab dressing demonstrations, Morris dancers, street entertainers, beer, bees, sheep, music, boats, coastguards, Shantymen - and Razz the Clown entertained in both towns!

Public asked to search for Norfolk’s most endangered buildings

The Victorian Society is asking the public to nominate buildings for its Top Ten most endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales. Appearing in the Victorian Society’s Top Ten list draws attention to a building's plight and can help save it. Nominations close on Wednesday 1 July.

Individuals, organisations and campaign groups are invited to name the buildings and structures that are most at risk in their local area - whether from demolition, neglect or inappropriate redevelopment. Buildings must have been built between 1837 and 1914. Buildings in the East of England which have previously featured in the Society’s annual Top Ten include the Jumbo Water Tower, Colchester (2013) and Ipswich’s former County Hall (2012) (see attached picture).

Christopher Costelloe, Director of the Victorian Society, said ‘All over the country fine examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture face neglect, demolition or unsympathetic re-development. We want the public to be our eyes and ears and nominate the Victorian and Edwardian buildings we are most at risk of losing. Whether it’s a school building, an empty pub, a redundant chapel or a neglected but impressive feat of engineering, make sure you tell us about it so we can try to save them.’

To nominate a building contact the Victorian Society via email (media@victoriansociety.org.uk), tweet (@thevicsoc), Facebook (facebook.com/thevicsoc) or post (1 Priory Gardens, London W4 1TT) with brief details of the building(s) on or before Wednesday 1 July 2015.

All the buildings nominated will be considered by the Society's architecture and conservation experts before the 2015 list of the Top Ten Most Endangered Buildings in England and Wales is announced. Sheringham Independent 418 June 27th 2015

Paul Thompson with his Milk Float.

On Sunday, charity walkers & ‘Cromer Walkers are Welcome’ linked the two towns, and there was a new Crazy Crab Competition from the Pier too!

Record crowds enjoyed the weekend & local accommodation was booked up weeks in advance. Every year, as the

Festival has developed, each town has added its own unique character to the event, and it is even more special because we believe this is the only two town Crab & Lobster Festival in Britain! The best news of all... dates for next year’s festival are 21-22 May 2016.

Cromer Pier Show 2015

The Cromer ‘End of the Pier’ show is now the ONLY one of its kind in Europe. A traditional variety show packed full of comedy music, song and dance.

No other Pier Theatre in Europe can boast the same credentials, making The Cromer Pier Show a ‘must see’ experience for all ages. This year sees the return of comedian Paul Eastwood, whose cheeky humour made him a firm favourite with audiences throughout the 2014 season with his quick rapport and natural charm winning him a legion of new fans and great reviews. Paul has had a busy time since last September and has spent much of the winter cruising with P&O Cruises in the Caribbean but did find time in his schedule to get engaged to his beautiful girlfriend Corea.

Also making a welcome return is Ben Langley who first appeared in the 2012 Cromer Pier

Sheringham Classic Car Show

Show with his very own brand of visual comedy. Earlier this year he made a brief announcement on Facebook “I will be premiering a comedy upside down straight jacket escape while suspended above the audience”. This brief statement has already led to much speculation amongst the fans of the show who are looking forward to seeing Ben suspended above their heads.

Making her very first appearance on the stage of the Pavilion Theatre is one of the country’s top multi-instrumentalists, Rachel King. Her music has taken her around the world and back again. Her versatility in violin, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute, panpipes and piano has given her the chance to work for some of the world’s most prestigious hotels and cruise companies. Rachel has also performed along-side acts including Bucks Fizz, David Copperfield, Simmons and Simmons, Jess Conrad and The Krankies.

Male vocalist Luke Walsh makes his very first appearance in Cromer and is looking forward to a summer season by the sea, which he says, will make a nice change from his home in Purley in South London. Luke has been singing since he was nine. His first professional appearance was at The Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. Amongst his other engagements Luke has appeared in the BBC’s Friday Night is Music Night, and at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. 01263 823258

Vocalist Jane Watkins appeared in last year’s show and is looking forward to another summer season in Cromer meeting up with friends and fans. Jane has spent the last few months at sea touring the world with Silverseas Cruise Line including a trip up the Amazon. After months at sea, Jane will still be performing above the waves but this time it’s just a short walk to dry land. No variety show would be complete without its dancers and the Cromer Pier Show is no exception. The Seaside Special Dancers will be working as hard as ever and displaying their talents in all forms of dance from tap to ballet. Add to this fabulous mix of talent colourful costumes, stunning sets, lights and music and you have a show to remember - The Cromer Pier Show.

The very talented and experienced Di Cooke returns for another year as devisor, director and choreographer, bringing her wealth of experience to a show that is now recognised nationally as an ‘incubator’ for talent, with many of today’s stars having trod the boards of the famous Pavilion Theatre, including Bradley Walsh, 2013 Britain’s Got Talent finalist ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, and 2014 BGT finalist comedy impressionist Danny Posthill. Di is not giving much away about this year’s show, except to say that it will be ‘an all round variety show experience’ and, with such a talented cast, that is certain to be the case.

BEACHCOMBERS

Rotary Club of North Norfolk is pleased to present their fourth Charity Golf Day

Royal Cromer Golf Club 10th July 2015 Tee times from 11am -3pm

Our speaker on Monday 1 June was Mrs Carolyn Williams on ‘The Origins of Nursery Rhymes’. Perhaps none of us realized that they were written as long ago as The Middle Ages by adults for adults - their way of protesting against the Church and the Monarchy and these rhymes were passed on by children from generation to generation.

£180 Per team of four (RCGM less £15PP). to include Main course and sweet.

Team Prizes, Longest Drive, Nearest the Pin

In the 20th century academics started to research the origins of these nursery rhymes - and clearly some of the original meanings are obscure. Their research suggests that ‘Little Boy Blue’ in some way is connected with Cardinal Wolsey and ‘Little Jack Horner’ to the Reformation of the Monasteries. It could be that ‘Mary, Mary Quite Contrary’ has some connection with a Protestant Martyrs' grave-yard. However, it is an historical fact that Queen Elizabeth I rode uphill on horse-back to visit Banbury Cross - hence ‘Ride a Cock Horse’. Mike Warner gave the vote of thanks for Mrs Williams' totally absorbing talk.

Pimms station with cakes.

Brilliant day, excellent course, raising much needed funds for ‘The Holt Youth Project’

Sports Massage

Sports massage is the management and rehabilitation of the soft tissues of the body, which include muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The Beachcombers Dining Club's next meeting is on 6 July at the Feathers Hotel in Holt at 6.30 for 7pm. We are seeking to recruit new members and if you wish to know more about the Club please contact Mrs Christine Jackson on 01263 711502.

It is a hands-on approach so the masseur has the ability to feel the problems of the soft tissue through touch.

Massage can benefit everyone, not just sports people and it can help guard against or recover from soft tissue injuries. The massage process aids in the prevention of injuries whilst helping to minimise recovery time if sustained.

Please note it is essential that you pre-book your meal beforehand.

Benefits of sports massage include increased movement and flexibility, easing of muscle pain, increased vitality on all levels, physical, mental and emotional, aids circulation in the body, helps remove toxins from the body, prevents of knotting in the muscles and helps maintain your body in better physical condition.

For enquiries please contact Holt Holistic Centre, Station Road, Holt telephone 01263 711898 or 07884 583025 and ask for Celina Berry.

NATIONAL GOLD VAULTS EVIE INTO GB SQUAD A young gymnast from Norfolk has been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Downs Syndrome Gymnastics Championship in Milan in November.

Evie Rodwell, already an established athlete with Special Olympics Norfolk, booked her place in the national squad with an outstanding performance in the recent National Downs Syndrome Championship in Leicester.

She now needs to raise £2500 to compete in Milan where she will be coming up against athletes from ten other nations including the USA, Russia, South Africa and Mexico.

Evie's mum Jo, a volunteer with Special

Olympics Norfolk, is spearheading the fundraising campaign and commented "We are so proud of what Evie has achieved and she came back from Leicester weighed down with medals and trophies.

"She has now got a national call up however we need to urgently raise sponsorship support from generous local businesses and individuals in order to make the trip to Italy possible and have set up a Just Giving page,”added Jo.

"Despite stiff competition, she won a bronze on the bars, silver on the beam and gold on the vault as well as a trophy for best junior artistic gymnast.

Evie, who turns 13 later this month and lives in Diss, proudly exclaimed "I'm so happy at being chosen for Great Britain and cannot wait for Milan!"
