Sheringham Lifeboat The Oddfellows’ B 818 Service Launch – Saturday 4th July
At 20.45 hrs the Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to try to locate a possible casualty who had a cardiac arrest either before or after falling down a cliff. A group of young people walking along the cliff toe has seen this person fall and dialled 999 and reported the incident. The original information given to the coastguard suggested the casualty was to the west of the station. The Lifeboat Crew initiated a westerly search but the Coastguard quickly realised the original information was suspect and re-tasked the Lifeboat to search the cliffs to the east of Sheringham. On arrival on scene the lifeboat searched the area, located the casualty who was attended by a coastguard and ambulance team and stood by in case they were needed. Because of the remote location the Coastguard decided to have the casualty airlifted from the cliff toe direct to hospital. It’s gradually turning into a wonderful summer and we are extremely busy here in the Gem of the Norfolk Coast. The vegetable garden is looking fantastic, with a dense foliage of broad and runner beans and a small forest of rhubard – all meticulously tended by the Estate Manager Emeritus - and so far we have only lost three kitchen porters in the search for new potatoes. It’s well worth it because the potatoes are delicious.
We ran a beetroot and blackcurrant mousse on the Spring menu which was absolutely superb – sharp and succulent with gorgeous, bright flavours – and in general mousses are a great way to enjoy terrific desserts without the

Breaking the Tunny Fish Codes …
Following the success of the Enigma talk at the Forties weekend last year, Sheringham Carnival is delighted to offer a talk and slideshow presentation by Dr Michael Bennett, entitled ‘Breaking the Tunny Fish Codes’. This is an account of the amazing events that led Bletchley Park to break the teleprinter codes used by Hitler to communicate with his generals. No other single event in WW2 contributed so much to changing the course of the war, and we only became aware of this when it was declassified in 2001 and presented as a BBC documentary in 2011.
There are two opportunities to attend the talk and slideshow – on Saturday 12 September at St Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall at 3pm or on Saturday 19 September (Forties weekend) at The Mo Museum (Wind Farm Room) at 5.30pm.
Tickets are available from the Carnival Caravan or Maisie’s Baby Boutique or call Paula on 01263 823546.

Pupils develop a scent for business
FREE
Year 7 pupils at Gresham’s Prep put their business skills to the test recently when they were challenged to create a soap product and present it to a Dragon’s Den of judges.
After an exciting day of soap-making, the winning teams will now see their products produced over the summer to sell in time for the school’s Christmas Fair.
Masterminded by Gresham’s Careers department, Gresham’s Futures, the event called the CocoMango Soap Challenge, tasked pupils to think as business people and work in teams to produce a soap, choose the oil combinations, design the packaging, produce the costing and develop a catchy radio commercial and web page name.
The Dragons who came to judge proceedings and provide feedback were Mr and Mrs Merron, Directors of Camp Beaumont. Mrs Merron said “We were highly impressed by the presentations given by the Year 7 children. All twelve groups brought something different for us to consider and their ideas were packed with creativity, commerciality and scents and aromas for us to imagine. The winning group, Sweet Dreams, used original ingredients and their presentation demonstrated excellent teamwork, as well as an all-important radio promotion.”
Four groups were selected to have their soaps produced - Sweet Dreams, MOAP, Scentury Soap and Colibiri. The children are now really looking forward to seeing all four winning soaps on sale at the Gresham's Prep School Christmas Fayre in December. Q: Why is the Duke of Westminster one of the richest men in Britain?
A: Because his late father’s estate was exempted from Inheritance Tax due to the ‘death on active service exemption’. The 4th Duke was shot in the knee during the Italian campaign in WWII. It was held that the injury accelerated his death 20 years later. It was a major reason behind the Grosvenor Estates being saved for the family.
‘Death on active service exemption’ is the oldest exemption in the long history of death duties (now called Inheritance Tax). It dates back to the reign of William and Mary and to the Probate Duty in 1694. It applies where the taxpayer died from a wound inflicted, accident occurring or disease contracted while on active service against an enemy or on other service of “a warlike nature” or involving the same risks. The death does not need to be on the battlefield: it is enough that the wound, accident or disease was inflicted, occurred or contracted when on active service. It does not need to be the only or direct pathological cause of death; it simply has to be a cause. The
thinking is that those who give their life for their country should not pay tax to their country on their death. This relief has been substantially extended and the reliefs increased by the Finance Act 2015. It now covers the death of emergency personnel and also the death of constables and service personnel targeted because of their status. The old legislation had only exempted relief from the death charge but this has now been widened and includes lifetime gifts. In order to claim the exemption a certificate must be obtained from the MoD.
The ‘death of emergency personnel exemption’ covers search-and-rescue services such as coastguards and RNLI, the police, fire brigade, medical, ambulance and paramedic services; it also covers humanitarian aid workers. The person must die “while responding to emergency circumstances”. The death may occur later and relief applies if the injury sustained was one of the causes of death. For the ‘constables and armed services personnel targeted because of their status exemption’ to

apply it is immaterial whether the individual was carrying out his duties when attacked. It applies to both serving and former police officers and service personnel. The case of Fusilier Lee Rigby is a good example of such a death as are many Royal Ulster Constabulary officers killed in Northern Ireland over the years. This surely must be the one tax relief which no political party will seek to overturn.

Record Breaking Doodle Challenge – Calling all doodlers: We need you!
Libraries across North Norfolk are to challenge children this summer to create the longest ever drawing…and it is all going to be created using every day sticky-notes!
During the summer holidays, children are being asked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note that best illustrates why they love to visit their local library. The doodles will be put together to make a record breaking piece of bunting. The record attempt is part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, an annual event, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by the library network across the country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books whilst collecting stickers to complete the fold - up poster.
To help inspire the children, local illustrator, Adam Faulconbridge, will be running free workshops in all eight North Norfolk libraries. At each session he will introduce and demonstrate many different types of book illustration from comic book drawings and Japanese Manga style, to traditional printing methods and classroom doodles before each child tries them out.
knows there may be a bit of ‘friendly’ interlibrary competition to see who can create, and contribute, the longest piece of bunting?
Don’t miss Adam at your nearest library -
• Cromer between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 28 July
All the doodles will be joined together to make a record breaking string of bunting and displayed on Cromer Pier on Saturday 5 September at 2pm. Come and join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee.
• Stalham between 11am – 1pm on Monday 3 August • Mundesley between 2.30pm – 4.30pm on Tuesday 4 August • Fakenham between 10am – 12noon on Wednesday 5 August
• Wells-next-the-Sea between 1.30pm – 3.30pm on Wednesday 5 August • Holt between 10am – 1pm on Friday 7 August
• Sheringham between 11am – 1pm on Monday 10 August
• North Walsham between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 11 August
These workshops are sponsored by FALCON www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk which aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.
Throughout the summer the children can drop-off their doodles on sticky-notes to their local library (whilst they pick up their latest book to read!) to contribute to their own library’s paper chain of doodles (they might draw just the one – they might draw twenty…it is up to them). Who

Rock Bodham
Rock Bodham is back again in late July with a bigger and more diverse line-up than ever. The music festival, which raises money for local charities (£3450 in 2014), takes place across two days, and at two village locations.
Starting at 2pm on Saturday 25 July at Bodham Playing Field, the first day will have a real festival vibe with not only a diverse mix of bands but also children's entertainment, circus skills workshop, a walk around magician, stalls, games, food and a bar. Special Guests on Saturday are The Last Great Dreamers. Fresh from a nationwide tour in April, the band, who are back together after a 17 year hiatus, toured extensively with a host of big named bands in the 90s and were even nominated for 'Best new British Band' at the Kerrang Award (eventually losing out to Skunk Anansie).
is Insaniac Drummer and Pro Wrestler Big Mike Waters.
Tickets for Saturday are £4 for adults, £1 for under 11s and 3 and under free, and are available for purchase on the day.
On the Sunday, the fun moves to the Bodham Red Hart Inn Garden. The day starts with a selection of chilled our acoustic acts through the afternoon (Rowan Young, Charlie Hield, Becca Hazel, Adam Meek). Into the evening Earlybird, Jim Higgs, Jack Daniel and The Naked Lights conclude the weekend's music. Entry on the Sunday is FREE though we will be collecting donations and having a raffle and BBQ.
For all the latest information and transport information, please like our facebook page www.facebook.com/rockbodham or follow @rockbodham on Twitter. If you can help us out for a couple of hours on the day, we are always looking out for volunteers, please get in touch (bodhambigweekend@gmail.com)

Traidcraft Appeal Success
Do you remember during the first three months of this year the Fairtrade group Traidcraft had a special appeal for donations, as the UK Government would match the amount raised?
An amazing £615,000 was raised including just over £1,000 from North Norfolk - and this will be doubled by the UK Aid Match scheme! So, for example, Traidcraft will work with more smallholder tea growers in NW Bangladesh, which has huge needs. Josni, was unable to feed and clothe her family, but now has improved her income over seven times, and has the skills, tools and confidence to keep moving forward This scheme has provided a great boost to Traidcraft's work with smallholders and producers across the world.
Your support for this work is making these improvements possible for thousands of families. Thank you, thank you North Norfolk, from Weybourne round to Overstrand and all the places in between for your help and enthusiasm.

Kelling Probus Club held their June Lunch Meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on Thursday 18 June at 1pm. After a very pleasant lunch, the club welcomed Brian Farrow from North Norfolk District Council to talk on ‘The Cromer Coast Protection Scheme’. Brian explained that he was a Coastal Engineer and was the organiser of the protection scheme, which stretched from Weybourne along the coast to well beyond Cromer. He told us that the main task involved was to understand beaches and the cliffs and promenades that were swept and bombarded by the North Sea. The present scheme, which was first envisaged in the year 2000, was in the process of using £6.4 million in protecting our local towns and villages. One of the problems was that the sea swept tons of sediment from our beaches towards Yarmouth, and therefore without building and maintaining groynes and other structures, our beaches would be much steeper and lacking in sand and pebbles. The 1958 storm that devastated our East Coast, initiated the task, which is still very important today. One problem encountered is that Cromer sea wall is listed so many agencies have to be consulted before any work can be done. Brian then talked about the damage done by the December 2013 storn surge which was greater in intensity than the 1958 storm. Luckily, lessons learnt in 1958 proved effective in 2013 and, although the damage done was extensive, there was no loss of life. He showed photographs of the damage and the remedial work including Cromer pier, which has been there for 120 years. At the end of his talk he was thanked for a most entertaining and interesting presentation. Kelling Probus Club meets once a month on the third Thursday, at the Dales Hotel. Guests and new members are welcomed and we can promise you will eat lunch and enjoy a speaker each month. Interested in joining or giving us a try, then contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently had problems with our branch phone line. Initially with lots of background noise but latterly, the phone has been dead when Stephanie answers or the answer phone starts its message. We cannot even transfer calls, which we normally do when Stephanie is on holiday, as BT have taken this facility away while trying to find the cause. As Stephanie had the same problem with her own phone recently, and some of her neighbours have been affected too, we are hoping that the problems will be resolved by the time you read this.
When giving a home to a cat for the first time, one of the most important purchases will be a cat basket for transporting your cat safely when visiting the vets or a cattery. These come in various shapes, sizes and materials so it is important to make sure you get one which offers security and is the right size for the cat in question (please remember if acquiring for a kitten, it will get much bigger). It may be because of problems in the past, (when cats have escaped from what has been believed to be a secure carrier) that, recently, several manufacturers have been indicating a weight restriction on their products. Although the basket may be large enough to hold the cat comfortably, if it is too heavy when lifted by the
Sheringham Players
handle, it can pull slightly apart, allowing the cat to make an unscheduled exit. Abbie would like a new When buying a home now that her new basket, please kittens have left us take this into consideration. If, however, you already have a basket and are not sure whether or not it is completely secure, hold it underneath rather than by the handle. Most people using Lyngate Road in North Walsham will be aware of the stall selling goods to raise money for the cats at Sharon’s home. All the items for sale have been donated to us by cat loving members of the community to raise money for the cats in care. Sadly, recently, there have been some items taken from the stall without payment, including a wicker cat basket. What sort of person does this we might ask? Not our sort of person and not a true cat lover. Perhaps someone has taken the goods to make money for themselves, even if they have not got a cat. Should you be offered a wicker cat basket, please be aware it could be the one stolen from the stall.
Sheringham's amateur dramatic group Sheringham Players followed up their very successful spring production with yet another brilliant set of performances in their production of "Flying Feathers" at Sheringham Little Theatre in June. The production was an enormous success, with a near sell out on each evening. The farce, written by ex-Coronation Street star Derek Benfield, and directed by Players’ members Tim Travers assisted by Shai Ashkenazi, was hilarious, with fantastic performances from the very talented and funny Matt Warrington and Greg Pope, as the dubious vicar and haplass solicitor respectively, and with great characterisation and comic timing from Graham Blyth, who played two roles as twin brothers, ably supported by the stylish Helen Simmons as their sister. Great credit must also go to the five girls, Sue Bignall, Fi Cross, Suzanne Challinor, Laura Wakefield and Rosie Gilding for being very brave in appearing scantily clad throughout and delivering consistent performances as the ladies of ‘ill – repute’. The back stage crew of Amy Knight, Hazel Randell and Harry Guilding- Hewitt, led by Stage Manager Guy Bartle, managed the play with superb staging.
The Players next offering from 19 - 21 November at Sheringham Little Theatre is ‘And Evermore Shall Be So’, a murder mystery with more than a touch of humour and a few twists and turns which will leave you guessing until the very last speech of the play. The Sheringham Players have been operating in Sheringham for 50 years, performing a wide variety of plays several times a year, and anyone with or without acting experience and who would like to join a fun, friendly, welcoming group or would like to know more should check the web site www.sheringham-players.org.uk or contact Chairman David Bull on David.r.bull101@gmail.com

In preparation for a future local history day, we would like to be able to have a display of ‘Weddings through the Years’. If you yourself, or someone you know, has such an affinity with our village church PLEASE encourage them to contact us on info@thorpemarket.org.uk
With modern technology there is no need for anyone to part with cherished family memories, a simple scan is all that is needed. Early 20th century, or who knows, even late 19th century would be a wonderful discovery. All the wedding registers are held at the County Records Office so we have access to details of all the weddings, even pre-dating photographs.
We have even had mention of wedding dresses still lurking in attics. Any reminiscences, anecdotes and especially pictures would be very welcomed.

Weybourne Methodist Church Pet Service
Weybourne Methodist Church recently echoed to more than the usual hymns when the church held a Pet Service.
Members of the congregation and friends from the village were encouraged to bring their four legged friends to join in an act of worship to remember God's creation.
The service was led by Rev David Philo, who spoke about Jesus being the Good Shepherd
and lead the congregation in a special hymn that he had written for the occasion as well as a psalm adapted for the service. A visitor from New Zealand completed the joyful time by singing a lovely solo even though she was accompanied by one furry friend who wanted to join in the song
The service was enjoyed by all (and the pets were well behaved). The day ended by members of the congregation, friends and their pets sharing in fellowship and refreshments in the beautiful church courtyard afterwards.
Ronald James Constable 15.1.1933 – 1.6.2015 In Loving Memory of my dear husband, Ron.
I would like to thank all my family and friends for the kindness and support shown to me over this difficult time.
The cards, letters and flowers have been overwhelming, also the generous donations which will help two worthy charities, EACH and the Big C.
I would also like to thank Sheringham Medical Practice for their faultless care of Ron for the last 14 years Yvonne

Non-surgical option for treatment of varicose veins Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.
Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour.
Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age. Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.
Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg. More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg, that can’t be seen at the surface.
The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy. Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins. For more information or to book an appointment, Call 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

Walks are suitable for older children and adults and start from Cromer Museum, unless otherwise stated. Some may include a steep walk or rough terrain. Suitable footwear/clothing must be worn. Advance booking essential for ALL walks. Cost: £4, Museums Pass £3.

Weather from Ned Nimbus
Unfortunately, the forecast for the period April - June was correct and any positive changes in the next three months will be slow but, as we get into August and into September longer finer spells without interruption can be expected.
With a mild winter many forecasters were expecting a warm spring and an early onset of a hot summer but a lot of cold air to the west of us, and a colder than normal North Atlantic and North Sea, cast into doubt such an expectation.
The odd burst of warm air from the continent has quickly been

Building Excellence award wins for North Norfolk District Council
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) scooped two awards at the 2015 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on Friday 26 June.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of Building Control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards are a celebration of the best projects in the region (including Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk) for quality and compliance with building regulations.
The wins this year were for: • the best small housing development, awarded for Three Ties Barn Brumstead Road, Stalham
24
• the best social or affordable housing development, awarded for Goulders Lane, Felmingham
Cllr Sue Arnold, Portfolio Holder for Planning said “This is great news and reflects the excellent work which North Norfolk District Council Building Control team does, and showcases how they can help deliver award winning projects for their clients.”
The award winning projects will now go forward to the national awards held later this year in November. Both categories reflect the excellent work that is on-going in delivering good quality, sustainable housing in North Norfolk.
The awards were accepted on stage by the developers accompanied by Stuart Tate, Sue Wootton, Daniel Theobald and Elliott Schubert of NNDC’s Building Control department who attended the awards ceremony.
If you would like to share in this success, why not become a partner of North Norfolk District Council Building Control?
All of our surveying team have a wealth of experience in building control and we can assist with pre-application advice and plan checking, regardless of where your project is located within the country. Once work is in progress on site, the relevant Local Authority will take over inspection of the work in the usual way, from plans already approved by us, so you always have a consistency of approach and interpretation. For further details of how NNDC Building Control can help with your project, contact Stuart Tate, Building Control Manager on 01263 516132.

The launch of Trust Norfolk - SEN; the co-operative with a difference
The Forum in Norwich will play host on Friday 10 July to the official launch of Trust Norfolk SEN, an exciting project designed to enrich special needs education throughout Norfolk.
Trust Norfolk - SEN formalises the longstanding collaboration of Norfolk's 11 Special Educational Needs Schools, which are situated across the county from Kings Lynn in the west to Great Yarmouth in the east and from Sheringham in the north to Attleborough in the south. In 2012, the Norfolk Association of Special School Head teachers (NASSH) aspired to build on and reinforce the support that could be offered to the Special Educational Needs community in Norfolk, and after extensive research, it was decided that a Co-operative School Trust would best serve everyone's needs. Trust Norfolk - SEN was born.
The members of the Trust will collaborate and support each other in a number of areas, ensuring high quality training, improvement in SEN development planning, leadership and management, the provision of SEN services, and in doing this, enriching experiences and opportunities for learning. It will become a Forum for its members. Details of the Trust's aims can be found at trustnorfolk-sen.co.uk along with how to join the Trust as a member.
Visitors to the launch will be able to witness at first hand the results of an amazing collaborative artistic venture - the unveiling of a 12-month creative arts project undertaken by students of all ages and abilities from Trust
schools, who have worked on a textile masterpiece - ‘Firework Celebration' with the artistic support of Dominique Clark. This artwork will remain on display for the entire weekend of the launch. Students from Trust schools will also join the launch on Friday to sing and sign together.
Two other collaborative projects have already taken place this year, the first in April, the second in May 2015. The first saw a large group of students travel to Italy to experience and develop ski skills, the second was a combined school outing to Bewilderwood, courtesy of owner, Tom Blofeld.
and learning in collaboration with the Local Authority and University of East Anglia. Our not-for-profit Co-operative Trust model will bring benefits to all members including parents, carers, staff, students and partners. We would warmly welcome others, who share our aspiration to enhance support for SEND across Norfolk, to become members and join Trust Norfolk-SEN."
"Bringing so many schools together to work, play and learn is a logistical challenge, but incredibly worthwhile," said Keith McKenzie, Head of Hall School in Norwich, and Vice-Chair of Trust Norfolk - SEN.
He added "This is an exciting and bold initiative. The official reinforcement of the relationship between our schools will bring untold advantages both in the management of the schools and educational provision.
"The creation of an organisation, which simply brings key partners together to improve support, can only benefit the SEND community across Norfolk. Trust Norfolk - SEN aims to strengthen the Local Offer, to enrich SEND teaching
