£2,000 Raised at Rotary charity cabaret evening

A fundraising Cabaret Dinner organised by the Rotary Club of North Norfolk was held at the Links Hotel, West Runton earlier this month. Over 100 guests thoroughly enjoyed listening and dancing to the excellent entertainment provided by Dale Bullimore, a Michael Buble tribute singer.

Alastair Mayes, President of the North Norfolk Club, thanked the many who contributed to success of the evening, and in particular Keith and Denise Woodcock who President Alastair Mayes (right) very kindly sponsored Dale. with Dale Bullimore It is thought that the event will have raised in excess of £2,000. These funds go towards helping local charities, and also towards helping worldwide disasters such as the Nepal earthquake by sending shelter boxes and other aid.

CARRY ON, SARGEANT! Local Guitarists Celebrate

A packed Copeman Centre at Briston thrilled to the amazing musical talents of organist and keyboard virtuoso James Sargeant on Friday 3 July!

Playing the diminutive Hammond SK2 organ, he took us on a musical journey through the years, from the sounds of the early Hammond organs of the 1930s via the Big Band sounds of the 1940s and '50s, right up to modern pop ballads, some exquisite modern jazz, a few numbers by the Carpenters, and ending with the wonderful 'MacArthur Park'.

Trinity Guildhall Exam Results

Anyone who’s ever learned to play an instrument will know just how much time and dedication is involved, but for those working towards graded examinations there is also the added pressure of having to perform in front of an examiner.

James has worked for Hammond in the past, but now uses his talent with the Yamaha musical division in the UK. It was a truly super show, and as usual, the proceeds from the Raffle and excellent refreshments benefited the Copeman Centre's own fundraising to the tune of £166.40, and our Vera, who has a stall fundraising for the 'Orbis' Flying Eye Hospital charity, made a creditable £72.60 from her sales of greetings cards, jams, and plants.

The next show is on Friday 21 August, when the very capable organist and very humorous Paul Carman, will be with us once again, putting one of the latest Orla organs through its paces. Last time he visited we were packed out, as he is such a popular entertainer. If you like the best music to suit all tastes, played live on an amazing digital instrument that can produce sounds ranging from Big Bands, lush Symphony orchestras, theatre organs, or a trad jazz band (or just about any other musical style as well!) do come and join us. The Copeman Centre is a very comfortable venue, with wide easy access, and free parking right outside. Tickets are just £6, and if you want to bring music-loving under-16 year olds with you, they get in ABSOLUTELY FREE, as long as you mention this when booking your tickets - which you can do by 'phoning Carol anytime on 01263 860844. The show starts at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm, with a break for refreshments and raffle from 8.30pm until 9pm. Hopefully you might come and join us for a great night out!

Earlier this month, five of my students did just that when they sat their Trinity Guildhall Classical Guitar exams, with outstanding results.

William and Robert Riches passed their Grades 4 and 7 respectively with Merits, while Stan Cooper, Benedict Bonham and Sam Briggs all passed the coveted Grade 8, with Ben achieving a Merit and Sam being awarded a Distinction.

I am extremely proud of each and every one of them, all of whom I’ve taught from the very beginning of their studies, and consider it a real privilege to be able to nurture and inspire all of my students on their musical journeys through life. Tim Mason MISM, Classical Guitar Tutor, (01263) 768056

Fisherman’s Gangway

A £138,000 scheme to improve the Fisherman’s Gangway at Sheringham was officially opened earlier this month.

The gangway, off West Cliff, has been refurbished, the concrete slope resurfaced and the winch has been replaced with a hydraulic winch housed in a new building.

The work was funded 60% by Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) and 40% by North Norfolk District Council. The official opening was marked by a performance from the Sheringham Shantymen, who are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.

Chairman of North Norfolk FLAG, John Lee said “This is a significant project which will improve facilities for fishermen at Sheringham and I would like to thank North Norfolk District Council for their continued support of the fishing industry.”

The Sheringham Gangway Project was granted final approval in 2014 by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) after having been promoted by the North Norfolk FLAG as a key infrastructure renewal project for the fishing industry.

The project forms an important part of the North Norfolk FLAG Programme and is the first major scheme in a series of key investments that are being made by North Norfolk District Council matched by MMO and European Fisheries Funds.

North Norfolk District Council is leading on these investments through the FLAG to ensure that future shore to sea provision for the local fisheries sector is open and safe for all.

Cllr Nigel Dixon, Portfolio Holder for the Economy added “The Council is conscious of the need to both maintain and enhance the capacity of infrastructure vital to the safe and efficient operation of local businesses. This project is just one example of how the council is supporting and enabling the local economy to prosper.”

Sheringham Morley Club

The Morley Club on Cromer Road in Sheringham held a very successful Bon Accord Open Tournament on Saturday 4 July.

The winning team of P Pettitt, J. Jermy and David Betts was from Carters of Norwich. In spite of the extreme heat, a very enjoyable day was had by all those taking part.

The Club was also very pleased to welcome Mervyn King (a former World Bowls Champion) and his wife to the event, especially as during his early bowling career Mervyn had been a member of the Sheringham Morley Club.

The next Open Tournament is on Saturday 8 August and is the Carnival Tournament. Entries of three people have to be in by 1 August at a cost of £15 per team. Ring 01263 824519 or 823240 to register.

The Morley Club is a Social Club with snooker, pool, carpet bowls, bridge, chess and quizzes on offer. Our newly refurbished bar, with air conditioning, is in a very pleasant room to enjoy a bar snack and a drink with friends. Please ring 01263 822087 and ask to speak to our Bar Manageress, Liz Green to ask for further details - our joining fee for this very friendly Club is only £10. Holt & District Probus Club

Beverley Cooper gives talks throughout the country titled ‘In the Footsteps of our Fathers’. In Beverley’s case, her father was a soldier in the Highland Light Infantry, City of Glasgow regiment who was among the troops that fought their way up after the D-Day landings through France, Belgium and Holland in World War II. Beverley made the same 2,500 mile journey with Melanie Hare, whose father was killed in 's-Hertogenbosch, part way through the Campaign. James Hugh Hare was a Lt. Col. in the Ox and Bucks regiment.

FREE VALUATION

As 's-Hertogenbosch is a bit of a mouthful to say the least, the town is usually known as Den Bosch, and was liberated between 18 and 28 October 1944.

On 9 July, Beverley Cooper gave her Beverly Cooper talk to Holt and District Probus Club. Her fascinating tale was illustrated with maps and photographs, service medals and even a German soldier's dagger which her father had 'liberated'.

Beverley is the Representative of 71 Brigade and as such attends reunions and commemorations every year with old soldiers from the Normandy Landings and the follow-up campaign - she is proud to call these men friends.

Not only British and Allied troops - but also considered a friend by the residents of the lands that were freed from the Nazi yoke along the way to ultimate victory.

Holt and District Probus Club meets for lunch on the first Thursday each month at The Feathers, Holt. Further details (perhaps to pay a trial visit) can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, Eric Dear at 01263 823297.

Successful Court Action

The company which owns a former hotel in Sheringham has been taken to court for failing to improve the look of the building.

Huddies Ltd owns the former Shannocks Hotel in Sheringham. On Thursday 2 July, Company Director Andrew Roper pleaded guilty on behalf of Huddies Ltd at Norwich Magistrates Court to failing to comply with a notice issued under section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

North Norfolk District Council took the court action because the building is situated in a conservation area in a coastal town popular with tourists and there was concern that its appearance was unsightly and creating a blight.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Portfolio Holder at North Norfolk District Council said “The council had concerns that the building was in an unsightly condition and a blight on the area. Taking legal action is always a last resort but we will not hesitate to do so in the interests of the community.”

Section 215 authorises the council to serve a notice on the owner of land (or a building) where the condition of it adversely affects the amenity or the area. The notice requires steps to be taken to remedy the condition of the land.

The Council served a Section 215 notice on Huddies Ltd on 7 March 2014 with a deadline to improve the building’s condition by the 7 October 2014. After visits to the property in October and January, the building’s condition had not significantly improved.

Failing to comply with a notice to remedy the condition of land is an offence and this was another case considered by North Norfolk District Council’s Enforcement Board, set up to tackle this type of problem.

Following the guilty plea, the magistrates fined Huddies Ltd £900, ordered Huddies Ltd to pay the council’s prosecution costs of £2,700 and a victim surcharge of £90. Sheringham Independent 420 July 25th 2015

Our speaker at the July Lunch was Chris Branford who gave us a fascinating and well- illustrated talk on Paxton’s Crystal Palace.

Joseph Paxton, born in 1803, the 7th son of a Bedfordshire farmer, worked for the Horticultural Society of London before becoming Head Gardener at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. His achievements there included developing the Arboretum, the Emperor Lake and its famous fountain.

In 1850, his design for the Crystal Palace in South London was accepted. Building began straight away and it was opened by Queen Victoria the next year, to celebrate the Great Exhibition. Following a serious fire which destroyed the building, a new Crystal Palace was built and opened by the Queen at Sydenham in 1854. This survived until November 1936 when it was burned down.

Paxton’s other plans included the design of the Great Victorian Way, a ten mile circular shopping mall around London along roughly the same route of the present day Circle Line Underground, but this was dropped in favour of building London’s sewerage system following ‘the Great Stink’ of 1858.

Our next speaker on 4 August will be Ted Heath (no, not the former Prime Minister ) revealing the full truth behind Hypnosis. Could be eye-opening (or closing!)

Any gentleman who is retired or nearing retirement will be made very welcome at any of our lunch meetings at the Links Hotel, West Runton. If interested please have a look at our website www.candsprobus.club, for the latest information, or call Dave Vickery (Lunch Secretary) on 01263 824 306.

Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds has chosen to support The Wensum Centre, a mental health charity in Fakenham, and the Benjamin Foundation – specifically the three Foundation projects:

• BOOM! – a young carers support and activity group

• Steven Newing House in Fakenham, which offers accommodation for young people • Ben’s Workforce, a service for people in north Norfolk aged over 65 who need someone to do small maintenance and repair jobs around the home.

Cllr Claussen-Reynolds said “I am really keen to raise awareness and funds for these two very deserving causes.

Debbie Brown, Co-ordinator at The Wensum Centre said “We are extremely pleased to have been chosen by Annie. It will make a huge difference to our work, raising awareness and provide much needed publicity.

Chief Executive Tony Ing of the Benjamin Foundation added “We were absolutely delighted when we heard that The Benjamin Foundation had been chosen by Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds as one of the NNDC Chairman’s Charities for this civic year. We never take our support or supporters for granted and are always most grateful when we do receive this recognition from people and organisations who share an interest in our passion for helping vulnerable people in ways that provide them with hope, opportunity, stability and independence.

“I would like to personally thank Cllr Claussen-Reynolds for choosing us, in the knowledge this will help The Benjamin Foundation both in terms of raising awareness of what we are able to do and raising funds that will make a difference to the services we provide.

1940s Proms Party at Blickling Welcomes Cars from that Era

The sights and sounds of the 1940s will fill the air on Saturday 8 August, when Blickling Hall plays host to the “Last Night of the Blickling Proms” for the 4th year and organisers are encouraging owners of classic cars from the era, to come along.

Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said “As well as having music from the 1940s and offering a prize for the best-dressed, we thought it would be fantastic to have a special area where these beautiful, vintage cars can be parked so that other concert-goers have the opportunity to admire them. We have had several enquiries and think it will be another popular attraction on the evening. Anyone who owns a vintage vehicle from around this time should enquire about parking when booking their tickets through the box-office.”

John Postle from Aylsham is looking forward to coming along in his MG TC (pictured). He has owned the car for over 20 years after trading in his Austin and Healy Sprite in order to take ownership. “She was in quite good condition and I had always wanted one so when the opportunity presented itself, in Norfolk, I had to go for it! There aren’t many

about as they were scrapped during the war for their metal and parts”. John’s interest in cars goes back to when he was 14 years old and his prize possession is a Triumph Gloria. “When I was growing up, our family car was a Triumph Gloria and as my interest in vintage cars grew, I was determined to try and find my father’s pride and joy and I did. I bought her in 1968 and I still have her now along with all the original paperwork.”

John has lived closed to Blickling all his life; his father was a radio engineer in the war and was stationed in nissen huts on the Blickling estate. The family have a strong local connection, as John explains: “My father started the Postles electrical business in 1922 and it has remained in the family ever since and is run today by my daughter and son, Nikki and Jonathan.

“We’ve been involved with the proms event for the last four years and if previous events are anything to go by, it will be a fun evening.

I’m looking forward to coming along in the MG and seeing some other classic cars too.”

Postles have four branches in North Norfolk including Aylsham, North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham and are the main local stockist of Stoves, this year’s title sponsors. Raffle tickets will be available to purchase in the Postles’ marquee on the evening and the winner of a brand-new Stoves cooking appliance will be drawn out of the hat during the interval.

The evening will start with a choreographed air display by the Grace Spitfire, to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain”, which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Serenade and “We’ll Meet Again”, made famous by Forces’ Sweetheart Vera Lynn. The 2nd half will include the rousing sounds of “Rule Britannia”, “Jerusalem” and “Land of Hope & Glory”.

There will also be a Gipsy Moth fly-past and a grand fireworks finale.

Music will be by Sinfonia Viva, led by conductor Roderick Dunk. Parking is FREE and guests can bring flags, bunting, picnics and wine and soak up the atmosphere with friends.

Tickets (£33 in advance; £36 on the night) available at www.revival-productions.co.uk or the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts available.

‘Boobie cake bakes’ theme for Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal

The annual Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal has been launched in support of breast cancer patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The Appeal, organised by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), asks people to get together with family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students on Friday 23 October for a fundraising afternoon tea party. This year the theme is ‘boobie cake bakes’ and people are encouraged to bake boobie-shaped cakes of all varieties. Proceeds from the Appeal will be used to support the charity’s ‘Bracode Campaign’; a world-leading five-year research study taking place at Addenbrooke’s, which could make personalised breast cancer diagnosis and treatment a reality.

Hot off the Press!

Michelle Gray, ACT’s Head of Community Fundraising explains: “Researchers at Addenbrooke’s are amongst those who have recently revealed there are 10 different breast tumour types, which are related to patients’ DNA profiles. Changes in the DNA can be regarded a little bit like barcodes.

Popular Norfolk printmaker, H.J. Jackson, has just released his first book.

ALL CAR SIZES AVAILABLE + AUTOMATIC & ELECTRIC VEHICLES OUT OF HOURS SERVICE ONE WAY RENTALS MEET & GREET 'Afloat & Ashore' is a 144-page hardback book on the work and life of Norfolk printmaker HJ Jackson (John to his friends). As well as a 24page biographical section, illustrated with images from his youth and examples from his early portfolio, the book gathers together the bulk of John's fantastic linocuts of fishing boats, railway buildings, Norfolk landmarks and glimpses of a Norwich long since lost to redevelopment. Detailed captions explain the stories behind the prints, and John's highly individual printmaking technique is set out - including the fabled tobacco tin used to burnish his prints.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the work of this master craftsman; in fact, it’s a must for anyone who loves art and/or Norfolk!

“If you love linocut you'll be blown away by the colour palette and depth of detail John captures....you really will be able to smell the sea.” (Helen Lawson) Available now from Gallery Plus on the Coast Road in Wells-next-the-Sea 01328 711609 info@gallery-plus.co.uk www.gallery-plus.co.uk

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GREEN MANURES

for example, or the frosted remains left as a mulch.

Readers might have noticed the ribbon of blue flowers flowing across farmland in Sheringham and Upper Sheringham. This plant is Phacelia tanacetifolia, which is not only attractive to bees but is a useful green manure. Green manures are fast growing plants sown to cover bare soil. Their foliage smothers weeds and their roots prevent soil erosion. When dug into the ground while still green, they return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure.

Green manures are useful on allotments or vegetable gardens and are usually sown in late summer or autumn and lock up ant nutrients, preventing them being washed away by winter rain. When dug in the following spring they release nutrients back into the soil. Green manures can also be used to cover bare patches of soil in the spaces between crops, or during intervals between one crop and the next. Fast-growing mustard sown before midSeptember can be incorporated in October,

Summer-grown green manures such as buckwheat and fenugreek form dense foliage that will effectively suppress weeds. Green manures that belong to the pea and bean family have the additional capacity of storing (fixing) nitrogen from the air to their root nodules, but only in summer.

Other benefits include protecting the soil from compaction by rain and shelter for beneficial insects such as ground beetles.

General advice on how to use green manures: • Sow seeds in rows, or broadcast them across the soil and rake into the surface • Once the land is needed for cropping, chop the foliage down and leave it to wilt • Dig the plants and foliage into the top 25 cm of soil • After digging in, the site should be left for two weeks or more before sowing or planting out as decaying green manures can hamper plant growth.

There are many cultivars to choose from, and the

following are some of those selected by the RHS: • Buckwheat: This half hardy annual will only grow well in spring and summer, best sown in April to August. Grows well on nutrientpoor soils. • Mustard: This annual crop from the brassica family should not be followed by other brassicas as it could encourage build up of the disease clubroot. • Grazing rye: This annual crop is good for soil structure and overwinters well; sow in August to November and dig in the following spring.

However there are a couple of potential problems –firstly, a dense carpet of green makes a perfect environment for slugs and snails, so control measures may be needed after green manuring and secondly, decaying green manures can suppress plant growth, so allow at least two weeks between incorporation and planting or sowing your vegetables.

Can I also remind everyone that the Sheringham Summer Show is to be held on 15 August in the Lighthouse Community Church, and although there are no prizes for green manure there will be classes for all sorts of vegetables as well as fruit, flowers, pot plants, cookery, handicrafts and flower arranging. Further details are available from the Show Secretary, Jo Hayton, on 01263 821463. Bob Wilkinson

Sheringham Carnival

Carnival is getting in to full swing now with an action packed weekend starting with The Harley Davidson Rideout on Saturday 25 July arriving at noon and leaving between 3.30pm and 4pm.

Sunday 26 July heralds a very exciting Three Plane Formation (noon) which you will be able to see from anywhere along the prom and which promises to be a "heart in your mouth" moment. This is followed by the Raft Race at 12.30pm (subject to RNLI opinion). We hope everyone has been building their rafts, maybe enter them in the Parade as well?

Well that's the Sea and Sky covered – now what's happening on Land?

The carnival caravan will be out in town and we have a special raffle for you - a 50-50 Raffle, that means half of the takings go to the carnival and half go to a winner. For just £1 outlay you could potentially win as much as £500 (obviously, that is not guaranteed, it depends on how many tickets we sell!)

The 50-50 Raffle will be on Sunday 26 July and then will run every day of Carnival Week (1 to 9 August). Raffle tickets will be on sale at the Carnival Caravan where you will also be able to buy Duck Race Numbers, Quiz Sheets and tickets for ‘Breaking The Tunny Fish Code’ (two dates in September), the Carnival Masquerade Ball (3 October) and the Adults

IB Diploma results place Gresham’s pupils in top 4% worldwide

Gresham’s School in Holt has announced another great set of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results with its Sixth Form pupils achieving an average score of 34 points, five points above the worldwide average.

Douglas Robb, Headmaster of Gresham’s said “I am delighted with this year’s IB results. The pupils and their teachers have worked very hard and they should be congratulated on their achievements. The school has produced excellent results placing some of our pupils amongst the top 3.9% of pupils in the world.”

Head Girl, Esme Haywood, gained a score of 44 out of a maximum of 45 points, equivalent to 5A* at A level. Esme from North Elmham joined Gresham’s Prep in Year 5. When she progressed to the Senior School in Year 9, she was awarded the Edinburgh Academic scholarship and an Honorary Drama scholarship. In 2014, Esme was appointed Head

of School following in the footsteps of her older sister, Sophia. Esme has accepted an offer to read Chemistry at Brasenose College, University of Oxford.

Esme said of her success, “I couldn’t have done this without my family and friends, they have been so supportive. The opportunities available at Gresham’s allowed L toR - Harriet Shaw from Scottow (who will me to discover a wide study Geography at the University of Exeter), range of activities and Esme Haywood from North Elmham (who will decide what to pursue. read Chemistry at the University of Oxford) I owe so much to the and Hattie Rowan from Holt (who will study support and teaching Modern Languages at the University of Warwick) given to me by the school.” When asked what she would like to do as a career she said, “I plan to take a gap year working at Gresham’s Prep, I want to get some work experience and give something back to the school which gave me such a great start. I don’t know what will come after Oxford but Chemistry opens up a wide variety of career paths.”

Esme was a member of the school’s Crickets Choir (which is made up of the top ten singers in the Sixth Form) and performed in many school concerts including the annual House Music competition. She plays clarinet and saxophone and has some unusual pets including three alpacas and three tortoises.

Following their IB Diploma results, Gresham’s pupils have already secured places to study at a range of universities including Oxford, Exeter, UCL, Warwick and Loughborough.

■ Overall 39 pupils sat the IB Diploma at Gresham’s this year. ■ The average score awarded was 34 points compared to the global average score of 29 points.

■ One pupil (Esme Haywood) achieved 44 points, only gained by approximately 0.7% of students globally. ■ Four pupils achieved 40 points or above placing them in the top 3.9% of students worldwide.

Gresham’s provides both A levels and the IB Diploma in the Sixth Form enabling each student to choose the qualification most appropriate to their chosen career path. The school is now looking forward to receiving A level results later in the summer.

Our speaker at our July meeting, Mike Crowe, was well known to our members and needed little introduction.

He claimed that the Sheringham Carnival was bigger than Cromer's. In 1966 one of our floats appeared in The Lord Mayor's Show in London. "Our pedigree is better than Cromer."

The word carnival is defined as "A feast before Lent. A period of riotous revelry and reckless indulgence." One board that Mike had prepared showed a list of celebrities who had crowned the Sheringham Carnival Queen. These celebrities included Jimmy Clitheroe, Stan Stennet, Mike and Bernie Winters and Dickie Henderson. The other board showed a list of bands, including The Grenadier Guards, The Irish Guards and The Norwich Pipe Band which had played, also a list of attractions, including The Royal Horse Artillery Free Fall Team, The Red Devils (The Parachute Regiment Free Fall Team) and The RAF Police Dogs.

The first regatta took place in Sheringham in 1877. In 1887 the carnival was so popular that The Eastern and Midland Railway brought many people to Sheringham from London for a return ticket costing ten shillings and six pence. At that time there were many races including a lifeboat race, a sailing race, a shovelling race (shovels used instead of oars) and even a "pig hunt took place at sea".

In 1892 there were not only lifeboat and yacht races, but also a tug-of-war when the fishermen beat the landmen, also a women's race when some men appeared dressed as women but ran off in a different direction. According to a report of the 1894 carnival, races included an obstruction race, bicyle race

and donkey race. "The weather was a great disappointment." In the tug-of-war, the Fishermen competed, married versus single. We were not told who won. In 1897 the Cycle Club performed a masquerade torchlight procession. 1890 was "a time of revelry in Sheringham."

The organisation was impressive. In 1928 over £340 was raised. This is the equivalent of £30,000 in today's money. The programme cost one shilling, equivalent to seven pounds in today's money. Mike showed the kind of detail in the programme, including all the races and competitions and all the floats in the procession. There was also a pro forma for people to pay a penny and vote for the best float in the procession. According to Mike, nowadays the organisors are often not sure who is going to take part in the procession until they form up on the car park! Some of the prize money for winners of races was surprising: five guineas (five pounds five shillings), equivalent to seven hundred pounds in today's money, for winning the one hundred yards! The entrance fee was a shilling. There was even a three-legged musical chairs. If that was not enough, Punch and Judy, gymkhana and a fireworks display was also included. The carnival made a loss in 1933 due to lack of sponsors. In 1953 the carnival took place on Coronation Day. In 1962 Sheringham Urban District Council took over the control of the carnival and agreed to contribute to its cost.

Mike only managed to reach 1964 when the Carnival Dance, a great money-spinner, was held at the pavilion at West Runton. The loss of such facilities had a big effect.

Hugh Bradbury, our Chairman, had to inform Mike that we had run out of time, but to popular approval, Mike agreed to give part two of his talk next year.

Recycle Your Unwanted Textiles in New Banks

People in North Norfolk are being encouraged to recycle their unwanted textiles, rather than letting them go to landfill.

A new contract has just been awarded for textile banks in North Norfolk District Council, Breckland Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Broadland District Council. Cookstown Textile Recyclers will now provide and maintain bring banks and collect textiles from approx 75 sites across Norfolk. To find your nearest textile recycling point, visit ww.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator, which includes a postcode search function which can list all local recycling facilities.

Once collected, the material will be taken to their depot in Hertfordshire, where it is bulked up and transported to the sorting facility in Ireland. These new lime green banks will take all clothing, shoes, bed linen, towels, curtains, belts, handbags, hats and scarves. Good quality items and clothes that are no longer wearable can all be placed in the banks. Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Portfolio Holder at North Norfolk District Council said “I am pleased that this new contract will offer residents yet another way to recycle their unwanted clothing and help North Norfolk increase our household recycling rate. As well as this new service, we would also encourage our residents to continue to donate high quality clothing to local charity shops who rely on donations to carry out their vital work.”

Peter Fisher, Operations Manager at Cookstown Textile Recyclers, said “We are delighted to have won the contract for the four Norfolk councils and will work to provide an efficient service. We hope members of the public will support the textile banks and save materials from going to landfill.”

If you know of a suitable location for a textile bank, please contact North Norfolk District Council on 01263 516195.

20

Cookstown estimate that 65pc of the materials will be sent for re-use in Africa and Asia, while the other 35pc will be sent to pulping mills in the UK, to be used as fillings for mattresses etc.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Thankfully, the phone is working at present, although Stephanie has been advised that a new line needs to be fitted as ‘wear and tear’on the existing one has been the cause of the problems.

Most people are now aware that all our cats and kittens are either micro chipped before leaving for their new, or when they return to the vets for their second vaccination. However, they may not know that as well as chips migrating to other parts of the body, they can also come out or fail to register after a period of time (although this is quite rare). We recently re-homed a cat which had been micro chipped some time ago and confidently registered the said chip to its new owner. However, when he was taken to the vets by his new family, the chip could not be found. Fortunately, the family contacted us and we were able to arrange for him to have another chip inserted. As it takes very little time to run a scanner over an animal, vets are generally happy to do this when it is taken for treatment or annual vaccinations.

Fortunately, problems with micro chips do not occur that often, as illustrated recently when I received a call from one of our fosterers. She had been contacted by someone who had recently

Guy wrote and directed the last Overstrand Pantomime, ‘Jack and Alice in Overstrandland’, and of course, being a panto, it had a happy ending when in this story the panto cow delivers a gold cowpat brought on stage on a snow shovel! So, a guard of honour formed by members of the cast was planned, holding aloft golden cowpats on shovels much to the surprise of the bride and groom.

seen a ‘new’ cat appearing in her garden and, armed with her scanner, she went to investigate and discovered the cat was fortunately chipped. By checking the number on the chip registration website, I saw that the cat had been registered as missing and we were able to contact the owner, who was delighted to be reunited with her pet, which had been missing for just over a month. It is such a lovely feeling for all concerned when this happens.

Author Ritchie Perry Goes Digital

Most people in the Sheringham area remember Ritchie Perry for the time spent as deputy head of the Primary School.

‘Further afield, I'm better known as an author. In fact, thanks to the library services of various countries, it is no exaggeration to say my work has been read by millions of people. All together I've had forty books published, roughly half of them thrillers. Apart from this country, the thrillers under my name were also published in the United States. Various titles were translated into Italian, French and German. There was even one Hungarian translation. A further two thrillers were published under a psuedonym. I was made an honorary member of the Mark Twain Society of Missouri for "my services to American literature" by descendants of the great man and I am a member of the International Thriller Writers based in New York. In this country, I have recently rejoined the Crime Writer's Association. Several American universities competed for the right to house and store the manuscripts of my

thrillers. I'm ashamed to say Boston University was selected simply because the representative of the university organised a cocktail party in London which offered the opportunity to meet Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

As for my other books, they were mainly for children aged 7 to 11 and included a couple which were actually set in West Runton where I've lived since 1987. Nearly all of them were translated into German and the Danes made two audio-books. In connection with the children's books, I gave talks and led workshops all over the country. I wrote a book and a play specifically designed for secondary schools and I believe the play was used as part of an A-level course. In nonfiction, I wrote a geography book about Brazil.

Unfortunately, about twenty years ago the same illness which ended my teaching career had a similar effect on my writing, otherwise I'm sure I'd have many more books to my name. It was quite a shock when Endeavour Press, the largest independent publisher of digital books, contacted me this May. Their

idea was to produce all my thrillers as e-books for Kindle and, once contracts were signed, they didn't waste any time. The first book, The Fall Guy, was published this month - for anybody interested it is available at Amazon books or at the Endeavour Press website. It was my first book and when it was published, in the dim and distant past, it was very well received by major newspapers both here and in the States. I am not certain how relevant these reviews would be today. The Times wrote ‘Ritchie Perry is the best newcomer to the thriller scene for many a year’.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society held its Digital Projected Images Annual competition on 1 July. There were more than 80 entries from almost 30 members – quite a task for judge Adrian Stone to sort out!

The winning image on the day was ‘Rather You Than Me’ by Mike Coles. This photograph Rather you than Me by Mike Coles of terrifying motorcycle stunts in vivid colour against a beautiful sky more than justified its title!

Second was Richard Bryan’s image taken in the Louis Vuitton gallery in Paris, showing a gentleman quizzically

Special mention goes to Roland Riddell, who was not the winner with any of his three images, but was the best scoring entrant with 29.5 marks out of a possible 30.

Cromer’s First Ever Soapbox Derby designs included a high performance bicycle hybrid, an ambulance Soapbox, a metallic model that literally gave off smoke - driven by Tim Wright of Trunch, and a clever Steamtrain-esque Soapbox, representing North Norfolk Railways.

After a trial run of the course by rally cars provided by the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk, and some impromptu Mexican waves, the competition began in earnest. Times varied wildly from 1 minute 30 seconds to just 25 seconds. Despite the best attempts of the British climate, and the close calls of multiple runoffs, the day ended with a clear winner in each of the eight categories.

Overall Winner Peter MacMillan in his Soapbox

Cromer’s first ever Soapbox Derby was held to great attendance on Sunday 12th July. In front of an audiance to rival the Carnival itself, over 30 contestants launched from a ramp and down the slope of Runton Road to compete for several prizes in gravity powered Soapboxes, writes Isaac C-Knight.

The Soapbox course included a chicane made from straw bales and a ramp to test the steering skills of each driver and the handling of their Soapboxes.

The Soapboxes themselves were a spectacle. Some of the most memorable

Among the Winners were: “The Stig” in the Fancy Drress division, Tim Wright in the Village division representing Trunch, and Tim Wright of Trunch embarking the smoking steel Fiona Barrs in Soapbox the 16 to 17 year olds division - driving the bicycle hybrid Soapbox.

Peter MacMillan of the White Horse, after winning the Pub division, entered the final standoff and became the overall winner and recipient of the Malcolm McGreadie shield prize.

Cromer’s first ever Soapbox Derby was a success, and perhaps marks what may become a familiar overture to Carnival Week in years to come.

The race has been planned for some time by the Carnival committee. After a suitable road with a slope was found, the council granted road closure. This allowed the event to go ahead.

In the words of Committee Chairman Tony Shipp, who also provided the announcements at the event, “We are always looking for something a bit different to mark the next Carnival event, and the Soapbox Derby provided that, as well as an extension to the Carnival season”.

The Carnival Committee also chose to hold the day outside on a different day to Carnival week, to create a different association with the event and, in years to come more stalls and events are planned to help the Soapbox Derby become an event in its own right.

Chief organiser of the event Bruce Stratton and the Carnival Committee would like give special thanks to the Cromer “Snowy” the Steamtrain Soapbox, businesses, who bought representing North Norfolk Railways banners at the event, for their support, and also to the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk, who also provided the rally cars that debuted the track prior to the Soapboxes, and timed the races to a professional standard.

Summer Exhibition

The Summer Exhibition at The Gallery Norfolk features a wide range of oils, watercolours and silkscreen prints by our most popular artists , most of which has been inspired by Norfolk landscapes, seascapes and nature.

Taking pride of place is Leon Bunnewell; the galleries top-selling artist - Leon has been painted a series of new oils of the North Norfolk Coast. Also

his daughter Ruth Bunnewell (a rising star in the British landscape artist scene and featured in the July 2015 House and Garden magazine) has turned her attention to the Norfolk coast for the first time with new works of Holkham and Wells. There are a wide range of quirky watercolours by Norwichbased Eliose O'Hare and limited edition prints from other gallery favourites such as Andy Lovell, Chris Wormell and Sarah McMenemy.

It has always been part of the gallery's policy to make fine art affordable so prices range from ÂŁ30 to ÂŁ1,000 in the show.

ART EXHIBITION by Samuel Thomas

Celebrated Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas unveils an exciting and refreshing array of colourful pop-art inspired Norfolk Landscapes at an exhibition at the Red Lion Hotel, Brook St, Cromer from 14 – 31 August (10am – 8pm each day). The artist’s distinctive and contemporary yet timeless paintings are collected all over the world with limited edition signed prints starting at £95 each.

The Cromer-born artist opens his large 18-day solo exhibition co-inciding with Cromer Carnival. On display will be his vast portfolio of artwork alongside some new original paintings, one of which will be auctioned off in a silent-bid charity public auction. The highest bidder becomes the proud owner of the artwork knowing that the total sum will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The new painting selected for this auction is valued at ÂŁ1400 by the gallery that represents the artist.

‘With the large crowd of people expected we are hoping the final selling price will be much higher’ explains the artist. ‘By supporting such valuable charitable causes I know that my artwork will make a real difference to everyone’ adds Samuel whom regularly sells artwork to clients as far as the USA and Japan.

Samuel prides himself on being a self-taught artist and he has developed a refreshing painting style that is truly unique, euphoric and mesmerising. This v aried exhibition showing vibrant Norfolk scenes designed to lift your spirits will show around 25 original paintings ranging from very small to large statement pieces from ÂŁ395 up to ÂŁ1500. Limited edition framed and unframed prints starting at ÂŁ95 will be available alongside a large range of greeting cards. Samuel captures a sense of nostalgia in his works similar to the now iconic ‘Come to the Seaside’ rail posters of the 1920s but with a modern twist. These are not backwardlooking pastiches, but aspirational projections of the self into a better future.

The informal exhibition welcomes everyone and the Red Lion bar and restaurant overlooks Cromer’s seafront. All of the artwork is available to purchase at the exhibition but you can also order online at www.samuelthomasart.co.uk Entry is free.

Ramblers launch national Big Pathwatch Scheme Can you help provide information about your local footpaths?

The Ramblers have this month launched the Big Pathwatch scheme which allows members and non-members alike the chance to help provide a snapshot of footpaths across England and Wales.

Come and enjoy a Luxury Spa Manicure or Pedicure. This is a must have treatment for tired, neglected hands and feet that will leave you feeling revitalised! Your treatment will include a hand/foot soak, nail re-shape, hard skin removal, hand/foot scrub, hand, wrist and lower arm/foot and lower leg massage. You will then have warmed paraffin wax applied in order to seal in softness and moisture. To finish your treatment you can opt for anatural buffed nail or a varnish of your choice. Introductory offer of £15. (Usual price £25)

Using an app or the web-site volunteers can pick a 1 km grid square and then report any problems with their local footpaths as well as highlighting wonderful things seen along the route. Many members from the ten Ramblers groups in Norfolk have already selected squares but there is much more to do to ensure that this survey comprehensively reports on the state of footpaths in the county. The information will be used both locally and nationally to ensure that footpaths remain accessible and open. Visit ww.ramblers.org.uk to sign-up in what is the biggest project looking at the state of the country's footpaths that has been undertaken.

Anyone for Tennis?

Sheringham Sports Association has been working very hard over the past two years to improve Sheringham’s sporting facility.

With the help of grants, the Association has managed to raise enough money to replace the old crumbling under-used tennis courts with a Multi Surface Sports Arena (MUGA), including improved flood lighting. This space now accommodates various user groups such as Sheringham Football Club’s 13 youth and adult teams during the winter months, the Baptist Church who run football and sporting activities on a Thursday evening for young people, Fast Forward Sports and other private hirers. You can book this space after school hours and on the weekends for children’s parties throughout the year. Throughout the summer, the MUGA is also available for tennis. Individuals can book a court through Splash Leisure Centre for £10 an hour. You can pre-book or take your chance and just rock up. Ideally the association would like someone to start up a tennis club to make the very most of this facility. If you see yourself as the next Andy or Judy Murray please get in contact with the Association’s Secretary. The small but active committee are still trying to improve the facilities and are currently working on raising enough funds to make the clubhouse disabled-friendly. The design of the clubhouse does not meet DDA regulations. The existing ramp from the car park to the upstairs clubhouse, where the toilets, kitchen and bar area are, is too steep for independent wheelchair users and the door threshold too high. This prohibits some people in our community enjoying sports, whether participating or spectating. Woodfield’s School have shown an interest in using the MUGA during term time if the Sports Association can raise enough money to make these improvements. So far, £31,500 has been raised towards the £66,000 project. Almost half way there! The Association has several grant applications under way and hope to make this much-needed project a reality soon. If you or your business can help in any way please get in contact. Finally, the Association is looking for a few new volunteers to join the committee to help run the fantastic facilities we have in Sheringham. We are a small group of dedicated people who could do with some more help. Have you time to attend a monthly meeting and assist with general committee work, two roles that we are specifically looking for is a Minutes Secretary and Treasurer. For any of the above please contact our club secretary, Sharon, at shazanded12@tiscali.co.uk
