Sheringham Carnival The sun shone for this year’s Carnival Week.

Visitors and locals alike enjoyed a week of activities and events when there really was something for everyone. The town was busy and full of smiling faces.

Carnival Queen Lizzie Swanson and her attendants Megan Gladman and Emma-Louise Glover worked tirelessly to promote the Carnival throughout a busy week of engagements.

The Carnival Parade snaked its way through the town on the Wednesday evening when an array of floats of all different shapes and sizes was greeted with applause and encouragement from watching crowds.

Raft Race will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, at 11am on the advice of the RNLI when sea conditions will be perfect.

The day before, Bank Holiday Sunday 30 August will see a brand new event for Sheringham Carnival, The Aqua Tug of Oar - a tug of war on a raft! Teams are invited to join in. See Martyn Jackson at Ellie's Cafe Sheringham for more details.

Charity stalls at Sheringham Carnival

Were there many charity stalls selling goods at the Carnival on 2 August? Yes, but only one selling Fairtrade goods. Did any of the others have Fairtrade tombola – ‘A prize every time’? I don't think so. Were they selling Traidcraft craft goods from the four corners of the World? (Well ok, not quite, but definitely from Asia, Africa and from South America). Again, I don't think so. Did they have a range of grocery items from gluten-free snacks to dried fruit and nuts, from chocolate to laundry liquid? I doubt it.

Only three teenagers admitted they had forgotten that Fairtrade meant a fair price is paid for goods, plus an annual premium that must be spent on projects that benefit their community, such as schools or health facilities.

I enjoyed chatting to people, seeing the Carnival Queen being crowned and watching those magnificent Newfoundland dogs, on a beautiful summer's day. Brenda Smith, Committee Member, Fairtrade for Sheringham

Cream Tea Fundraiser

Friends and neighbours of Mrs Ruth Bird of Southrepps, flocked to her home earlier this month to support the Cromer based charity About With Friends. One of her friends has a grandson with a learning disability who attends the charity every day and Mrs Bird wanted to raise some money for them. This is the third year that she has opened up her house and garden to the public. A beautiful array of treats were on sale including homemade Scotch Pancakes with cream and jam and cakes of various types. There was also a tombola, a raffle, and a Guess the Weight Of The Cake competition as well as a more local-flavoured Name The Crabs contest.

Fine weather helped make the afternoon a success and £180.50 was raised for the charity. About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.

Delicious lunches were served, (wonderful apple pie!) along with cakes for sale and also various other stalls.

Along with their helpers they raised the wonderful sum of £946.94 for the North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Funds. By passing the money to the local group funds, it means that the money will stay in this area to support those with cancer! Thank you to all who supported this terrific effort! Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig - St Peters Church Sheringham

During 2015 the Shantymen are celebrating their 25th anniversary having started in 1990. Musical Director Brian Farrow said “There was no definitive start date we just morphed from an unruly group of singers and musicians into a slightly less unruly group of singers and musicians but with a name!” Twenty five years later they are still going strong.

In order to celebrate this auspicious 25th Anniversary they planned to do two special gigs in Sheringham and one at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier. Secretary Dick Grieve said “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians.”

The first gig was at ’The Lighthouse’

Community Church on Saturday 30 May, which proved to be very popular.

The second celebratory gig will be at St Peters Church at 7.30 pm on Saturday 22 August. Entry will be free and there will be a retiring collection in aid of the St Peters. Chairman Bob Hawkins said “We wanted to make these gigs a bit special so we have designed a slide show to run in parallel with the gig which shows some photographic details of people and places in our 25 year history.”

The third gig will be at Cromer Pier Theatre on 6 November and will feature a well known local celebrity, more of which later.

They also plan to make another CD late this

year or early next, which will feature their favourite and most popular songs. Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “The Shantymen are going to make a list of their twenty four favourite songs and will then choose the most popular ones for the CD. However we thought the public might wish to have an input into what’s on the new CD so we are inviting them to let us know their favourite songs which we have recorded.”

You will find a list of all of the songs they have recorded in the discography section of their web site www.shantymen.com and if you have any favourites or there is something you would like to hear again they invite you to let them know.

Mardling and Music at Thorpe Market

Two of the area’s best-known entertainers are joining forces to present one of their popular Mardling and Music Evenings at Thorpe Market Church on Saturday, September 12 at 7.30pm.

Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper shares the platform with Ian Prettyman, a former teacher still busy on the Lowestoft and district scene as local Methodist preacher, choral enthusiast and muchadmired exponent of traditional East Anglian fishing and farming songs. “We relish a bit of NorfolkSuffolk rivalry but find

complete harmony on occasions such as this” says Keith. The pair have performed together countless times on Press Gang rounds of local theatres, village halls and other community meeting places and in productions of All Preachers Great and Small in local churches. They continue in harness for Mardling and Music Evenings across the region.

Keith will share favourite yarns from Church and Chapel at the Thorpe Market show as well as a Bible reading in his beloved Norfolk dialect. Ian provides the musical items - including a rousing medley on his trusty melodeon.

There are firm promises of “plenty of hearty laughs and chances to join In the uplifting musical fun.”

Tickets are £10, including refreshments, from 01263 822384 and info@thorpemarket.org.uk

Norman Lamb announces dates of annual village tour North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb will be running his annual series of ‘open air advice surgeries’ from 1 September this year. The tour of villages will start at Hoveton on Tuesday 1 September and end in Briston on Saturday 5 September.

Mr Lamb commented “The schedule is always tight, but every year I find it an incredibly useful and enjoyable week, and in the time that I have been an MP I have been able to help thousands of people across

North Norfolk through the Annual Tour and weekly advice surgeries. The idea is that anyone can turn up to discuss any issue of concern or ideas that they want me to pursue on their behalf. You do not need to book an appointment. You can just turn up. North Norfolk's Got Talent

Hot on the tails of the completion of the national television programme, North Norfolk has its own opportunity for local acts to show their talents and the chance to hit the big time!

Starting in September, heats will be running across North Norfolk, from Holt to Mundlesley, and from North Walsham to Sheringham, with the Grand Final of North Norfolk's Got Talent (#NNGT) in Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre at the end of October. The talent competition is open to all from song and dance acts, to magic and comedy. "We want to give artistes from across North Norfolk the chance to show what they can achieve," said Annie Lloyd who is organising the competition, "We know how much talent there is in North Norfolk and we want to give people the chance to show what they can do".

"We are hugely fortunate to have this event supported by legendary producer, musical director and Ivor Novello award-winner David Mackay, and Anna Mudeka Southburgh Festival of World Music organiser and musician," Annie continued. As well as being a judge at the final, David Mackay will introduce the winner to his contacts in the industry as well as take the winner behind the scenes at the production of his major musical production of 'The Elvis Years' which comes to The Pier Pavilion Theatre on the evening after the #NNGT final - truly a Money Can't Buy Prize. Planning for the competition is well advanced, and will step up a gear over the coming weeks. If you would like to take part in the competition or you can think of someone who you feel deserves to be, full detail are on the website nngt.uk. You can also find contact details there if you would like to help as a volunteer or sponsor all or part of the competition. #NNGT is being organised by the Coast Arts Festival in conjunction with Arts North Norfolk, Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre and Art is Medicine.

New Owners at Marmalades Bistro

10

Marmalades Bistro has been a popular restaurant in Sheringham for locals and visitors alike for over 15 years. Its delightful mix of classic British food alongside friendly, passionate staff has produced thousands of satisfied customers. Marmalades has been expertly run by two couples to date, and now there is a new pair ready to take up the challenge. Local couple Ian and Sarah Collarbone will be taking over this 26 cover restaurant from 1 September. Ian will be putting his expert training, devotion and flare for cooking to good use in the kitchen, whilst Sarah will be heading up front of house and keeping the customers smiling. The couple, who recently married in Upper Sheringham, had just returned from honeymoon when they learnt that their favourite Sheringham restaurant was for sale. “As a family we’ve been regulars at Marmalades since I was 11 years old” says Sarah “It has come at a perfect time in our lives - it just feels like it was meant to be.” They plan to build on the dedicated work of current owners Ben and Julie, adding “The restaurant is so popular as it is with everyone, including us! We would be mad to change too much.” The young husband and wife team are incredibly excited to start welcoming customers existing and new, with extended opening hours and some delicious new additions to the menu. The restaurant will be open for lunches and dinners and, of course, Sarah is more than happy to cater for any special occasions, assuring us that no request is too much trouble. Come and visit this fabulous bistro from 1 September. Booking is advised on 01263 822830 or e-mail info@marmaladesbistro.co.uk Sarah and Ian cannot wait to meet you!

Cromer Society

The new season for The Cromer Society begins on Wednesday 9 September when a new eight week continuous extended lecture course takes place at The Cottage, Louden Road, Cromer entitled ‘Antartica Revisited’ and presented by Stephen Scott-Fawcett.

The White Continent is a place of mystery and discovery. In 1898 man first set foot on the fast tract of land (which is, in fact, two ice-encrusted land masses known as ‘Lesser’ and ‘Greater’ Antartica). This lecture series will explore the explorers - the early phase/Heroic Age of geographical discovery. It will also examine how, over the past 55 years in particular, the Southern Continent has shifted from being the ‘Great White Desert’ to the ‘Great White Laboratory’. Enrolment for this course is from 10am on 9 September, whereas the following Wednesday mornings the lecture will begin at 10.30am for two hours (until 12.30pm). There will be no half-term holiday for this course. The fee for the total course is £20 for members, £40 for non-members. Single lectures are £5 and £6 respectively.

Crabbie Comes Home

The Crab & Lobster Festival were delighted when they were offered the return of one of their original giant crabs recently.

The crab came from the first year’s festival art trail in 2010 and had been displayed outside for

some time, but wind and weather had not been kind to Crabbie.

For the past month she has been undergoing a complete make-over - deep exfoliation followed by a thorough rub down and a bright new-look has totally rejuvenated this Cromer Crabbie! She is now happily reclining in her very own deckchair in Cromer’s Tourist Information Centre window.

Crabbie’s carapace will be repainted each year to help promote the Festival activities.

Your Vote Matters Local residents to receive important voter registration information Households in North Norfolk will soon be receiving a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of North Norfolk District Council’s annual household enquiry canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. With the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place across the country in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the election takes place they will easily be able to take part. Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer at North Norfolk District Council said, “Anyone that wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year,

be sure to respond to the form straight away.

“We have invested in new automated services to make this easier than ever; you can make changes online at www.registerbyinternet.com/north-norfolk or confirm details are correct by Freephone to 0800 197 9871. You can even now confirm details via text message. Full details on how to do this can be found on the front of your form.”

“If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this online or by post.” It is particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered. Research by the Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. Be mindful that just because you have registered for

Council Tax at a new address, this does not automatically update the electoral register.

Kay Jenkins, Head of English regions at the Electoral Commission said “The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to easily check whether they’re registered. It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to registering is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.” “If you have changed address in the last year, it’s particularly likely that you will need to register at your new address, so check the form as soon as it arrives.” Residents seeking further information or guidance are encouraged to visit www.northnorfolk.org/register to view frequently asked questions about the annual canvass and Household Enquiry Forms.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the phone line has still not been repaired, the temporary solution seems to be working so, hopefully no more problems.

I had intended to move on from the subject of neutering this time but a recent phone call brings up another challenge we face quite often with regard to feral/stray cats. Last year after several visits to a car park in Aylsham, we managed to trap an un-neutered female and her kittens. As the mother cat was young, we had intended to socialise her and find her a new home. Unfortunately she was very unhappy being confined in a pen and took no interest whatsoever in her five week old kittens so the best course of action was to get her neutered. We were able to find someone who was prepared to offer her some shelter and to take responsibility for her once she was returned and, although still wary of people, she is happy with the life she now leads.

However, unbeknown to us someone living close to the car park had already taken one of the kittens, which had not been neutered and has now been abandoned it. Of course, inevitably, this little cat herself has now had kittens and we are back to square one. We were given to understand that there were originally two kittens although one has now disappeared! A trap has now been taken to catch mum and the remaining kitten, which is about six weeks old. It is so frustrating when this happens as you think you have solved a problem only to find its still there.

Cats Protection has recently been promoting the benefits of owning an older cat and, as we have several in care, we were delighted that the golden oldies were getting a special mention. Ivy, a sweet little girl who had been living as a stray, has now found a home and Tockey and Missy, who arrived because their owner could no longer look after them, have been reserved, and are just waiting for some decorating to be completed before they too leave. They go with clean bills of health from our vets and

CROMER and SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

The guest speaker at the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club lunch meeting on 4 August was 'Ted' Heath ( nicknamed after the famous band leader and not the former Prime Minister, we were assured!).

His subject was 'The truth behind hypnosis', a fascinating topic about which few of us knew anything, except as TV entertainment. The reality is clearly very different.

After a lifetime working in aeronautical engineering and later as an IT systems analyst, Ted followed up a boyhood interest in hypnotism, became trained and qualified as a professional hypnotist helping a wide range of clients overcome common phobias such as a fear of heights, dentists and spiders to name but a few. We learned that hypnotism can be used as an alternative to anaesthetics in minor surgery, a fact confirmed by one of our members who is himself a former surgeon.

Woodlands Indoor Bowls Club

This was a riveting talk, dispelling many of the myths surrounding hypnotism.

Our next speaker, on 1Upper September,Sheringham at the Links Hotel, West Runton, will Holt Road NR26 8TU be Christine Adams telling us more about the extraordinary story when 'Mrs Savidge Moved her House'.

BANK HOLIDAY BONANZA

at St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market Saturday 29 – Monday 31 August

Whatever else you do over the Bank Holiday weekend, make sure not to miss an exciting new exhibition and sale of work at St Margaret’s church, Thorpe Market, situated in a beautiful and tranquil setting, featuring three local artists. As always, a wide selection of used books will be for sale, costing 50p and £1 respectively for soft and hard backs, as well as refreshments in the form of teas, coffees and cakes. Entrance is free, the artists will be on hand throughout the exhibition and there is ample parking opposite the church.

ROSALIE OSBORNE GIBB - following two very successful exhibitions at St Margaret’s in May and June of this year, Rosalie will once again be exhibiting an exciting new collection of artwork in various mediums, as well as photographs, mounted art prints and greeting cards depicting her paintings and photos. Whilst Rosalie’s art covers many diverse subjects, the Norfolk coast and countryside remain firm favourites. Rosalie’s paintings have been displayed at exhibitions elsewhere and in the Beach Hut Gallery in Cromer.

THE CAT POTTERY - Winstanley cats have been made for the past 40 years, by Jenny Winstanley, assisted by her son Nick Allen and colleague Kim, both of whom have worked for the business for the past 30 years. All the animals, including the glass eyes, are handmade and hand painted, each one therefore being unique, making them highly collectable, in a range of sizes from the tiniest to life size. Although called the Cat Pottery, a complete menagerie is now produced, including hares, dogs, foxes, meerkats, badgers, lions, tigers, teddies, penguins and even the odd elephant. The Cat Pottery enjoys a worldwide reputation with their animals scattered across the globe from America to Russia.

GAYNOR HOULTON - working from The Beach Hut studio and gallery in Cromer, Gaynor designs and makes a wide range of adorable and unique coast and country-themed homes and interiors fabric creations. Having had an internet business for the last six years, doorstopsandgifts.co.uk, as well as supplying Coast and Country Interiors in Bude and items for Country Living magazine’s Spring and Autumn Fairs, Gaynor has also exhibited at major craft fairs. Gaynor’s exciting and diverse range of goodies includes pinboards, a wide range of doorstops, appliqued cushions, bunting, bags, aprons and even the odd crab, all of which can be made to your own requirements. Charity Auction & World Pier Crabbing Championships

August bank holiday will see all the fabulously decorated ships wheels on display at the pier forecourt. There really are some dazzling designs and beautifully crafted specimens available to bid for at the Grand Charity auction, and all proceeds go to support local charities and good causes.

Over the years, the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated nearly ÂŁ33,000 raised from the art trail auctions, thousands of people have benefited and hundreds of people have bagged a bargain piece of quirky art to take home with them.

The World Pier Crabbing Championship takes place before the auction. It is great fun and always a hit with all the family. There is a selection of prizes for the winners and a silver salver for the top catch plus stalls, face painting, music, and all the seaside fun and friendly local atmosphere which goes to create a day to remember! The event starts around 11am and ends around 4pm.

BEACHCOMBERS

Our Dining Club members were pleased to welcome again Mike Stew as their guest speaker on Monday 3 August, when he shared with us some of his stunning photographs of British wild flowers - shown in ultra-definition and filmed with extreme patience - so difficult to describe eloquently in this short report.

As he led us on a journey through hay meadows filled with buttercups, cowslips and ox-eye daisies, and through ancient woodlands carpeted with bluebells, violets and snowdrops, a poem "Oh to be in England now that Spring is here" by Robert Browning sprang to mind. A sad fact remains though: 98% of these habitats of British wild flowers have disappeared over the last 50 years.

Brian Bullock gave the Vote of Thanks and members showed their warm appreciation for a most enjoyable audio-visual presentation.

The Beachcombers Dining Club meet on the first Monday in the month at the historic Feathers Hotel in Holt at 6.30 for 7pm, where we enjoy a three-course meal.

16

The next meeting is on Monday 7 September. New members are welcome and if you would like to know more about the Club please contact Mrs Christine Jackson on 01263 711502. Please note: it is essential that you pre-book your meal beforehand.

A London-themed Major One-Man Exhibition by Trevor Woods at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea. Saturday 22 August - Saturday 5 September An engaging colour field of London paintings.

This exhibition by local contemporary artist Trevor Woods explores graphic, abstract shape and colour around London above and below ground.

These paintings have allowed Trevor to push his style further in terms of creativity, but still hold onto his core principles regarding the way he paints and chooses subjects.

Air Line

Along with the central theme there will also be a selection of paintings of familiar

London landmarks, plus one or two surprises. As part of the exhibition there will be a series of 10 paintings that won’t be revealed until the opening day… so you’ll just have to come to the exhibition to see more! Featuring over 50 brand new paintings, this is going to be an explosion of colour!

Of his paintings, Trevor says “My work has always been strong and graphic in style, featuring instantly recognisable scenes without the everyday clutter, which encourages the observer to look at everyday views in a new light. My style is always developing, and this year it’s become slightly more abstract, featuring flat areas of colour, broken up with rich painted texture and lines, but you can still see what is being depicted, and you can still see it’s distinctly

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER TEASELS AND OTHER FLOWERS FOR DRYING

This seems to be a very good year for teasels and they are abundant in gardens or in ditches or on waste land. The teasel is named from the use of its spiny heads to ‘tease’ out the separate fibres of wool before spinning or to raise the pile or ‘nap’ of finished cloth.

plant is young are connected in a curious manner by a green membrane, or continuation of the lower part of the leaf round the stem so as to form a cup. The stalk rises in the centre of the cup, and of these vessels, there are three or four above each other in storeys. When it rains, the drops, instead of falling off as from other leaves, run down these and are collected in the cups, which thus forms so many natural rain- gauges. If it is a large plant, the cup nearest the ground –the biggest- will hold as much as two or three wine glasses. The water remains there for a considerable time and it is fatal to numbers of insects that climb up the stalk and fall in. While the grass and the earth are quite dry, therefore, the the teazle often has a supply of water, and when it dries up, the There are several varieties and Richard Jeffries drowned insects remain at the bottom like caught the architectural elegance of the wild dregs of a draught the plant has drained. Round teasel in an essay written in the 1870s: the prickly dome-shaped heads, as the summer ‘The large leaves of this plant grow in pairs, advances two circles of violet-hued flowers one on each side of the stem, and while the push out from cells defended by the spines, so that, seen above the hedge, it resembles MOTs - REPAIRS a tiara; a green circle at the bottom of the SERVICING - TYRES dome, and two TAXI TESTING CENTRE circles of gems Est. 2002 contracted by North Norfolk District Council above.’

Bank Street, Stalham NR12 9BA

This teasel water or ‘dew’ has always been thought to have rejuvenating powers and in the eighteenth century was believed to remove freckles.

Teasels are one of many wild and garden flowers that can be dried for decorative purposes around the house and the following tips might help to grow and dry flowers such as larkspur, helichrysum, statice, lavender and grasses. • Sow seeds of annuals in spring in straight rows, so you can spot weeds easily

• Give plants a regular feed for maximum production

• Pick flowers when open and at their best on a sunny day after the dew has dried

• Keep picking as flowers grow. The more you pick the more the plant will produce

• During wet periods, deadhead the flowers

• Once picked, snip leaves off the stems and tie into bunches

• Hang in a dark, well-ventilated shed or room, so colours stay bright and flowers don’t rot

At the National Trust’s Cornish property of Cotehele they create a fabulous 60ft garland of dried flowers grown in their garden

Come and See a Record Breaking Doodle attempt

During the summer holidays children across North Norfolk have been asked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note. It was all part of a challenge linked to this year’s Summer Reading Initiative, an annual event run though the local library service in conjunction with the Reading Agency, which this year was based around the Guinness World Records.

Local illustrator Adam Faulconbridge ran eight free workshops, in all North Norfolk libraries, to help inspire the children to get creative over the course of their summer holidays. Their hundreds of doodles were both imaginative and witty, demonstrating artistic flair and a great deal of perception. A lot of fun was had by all, small, and big children alike and Adam, the organisers, and the local Library service would like to thank everyone that took part; as well as the owners of Cromer Pier for all their support and the generous use of the pier.

These workshops were sponsored by FALCON (www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk) which aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.

The doodles will now be brought together and attached to a piece of bunting. Hopefully, in doing so, they hope to create an unofficial

record for the longest ever doodle in North Norfolk. They will be displayed around Cromer Pier on 5 September from 2pm and everyone involved with the record breaking challenge would love to see as many children, and adults alike, there on the day to help celebrate the achievements of those taking part.

Fear not, there may still be time to have a go yourself and to make your own contribution to this unique record attempt. Either pop in a doodle to your local library, on a standard sized sticky-note, before 5 September or come along on the day. There will also be the opportunity to see an extraordinarily colourful and huge loom band of over

20 metres in length, as created by the wonderful children who took part in a record breaking event held at Sheringham library as part of their Carnival celebrations.

Finally, just remember to join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the doodle masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee.

Up from Down Under at Holt Probus Club The Feathers Hotel in Holt provided a splendid meal for the members of Holt and District Probus Club on 6 August after which Ted Wareham spoke about Sir John Monash.

Monash was born in 1865 to German Jewish parents in Australia, where his schooling rapidly nurtured his extraordinary talents. After being head boy at his school, he graduated with a Master of Engineering degree in 1893 and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law in 1895. In 1921 he added to his tally becoming a Doctor of Engineering.

Whilst at university Monash joined the university militia and became colonel commanding the 13th Infantry Brigade in 22

1912. When WWI broke out, he became commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade, in Europe in 1915 in time to take part in the Gallipoli campaign. A Major General and then Lieutenant General, he took part in much of the action along the way, including Messines and Paschendaele.

At the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918, Monash commanded the 4th Australian Division, supported by the British 5th Tank Brigade, and others to win a small but operationally significant victory for the Allies. He went on to plan the successful attack at the battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918, which helped to end the war.

Monash is considered one of the best Allied

generals of WWI and the most famous commander in Australian history.

Thanks to Ted Wareham were given by Roy Jackson, who added his own observations on the importance of the victory at Hamel.

Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries perhaps for a trial visit should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207.

Norfolk teenager and his horse Python invited to represent Great Britain in the U18 Eventing Development Squad

Charlie Jones, from Little Witchingham, and his horse Python (aka Sid) have been invited to represent Great Britain in the Under 18 Development Eventing Squad to be held at Millstreet, County Cork in Ireland, in August.

Next year, the 16 year old pupil who attends Gresham’s School in Holt hopes to reach the Long List for the Junior British team and ultimately to be selected to represent Great Britain at the FEI Junior European Championships.

As well as competing for Great Britain, Charlie and Sid will be travelling to Weston Park, Shropshire, in October, to represent the East region in the KBIS U18 Regional Championships at the British Eventing Festival of Youth.

26

Charlie and his horse Sid competing at the Barbury International Horse Trials in Wiltshire in July

Charlie first sat on a horse at the age of one and has continued to develop a real love for the sport. Initially focussing on pony racing, he

was crowned East Anglian Pony Racing Champion in 2009 and then shifted his concentration to eventing. Currently a pupil in Year 11, Gresham’s has given him tremendous support by allowing him time out of school to train and take part in competitions. Eventing involves all three disciplines of dressage, show jumping and cross country and, as a result of his dedication to training, Charlie is now competing at high level events.

Charlie and Sid continue to prepare for the championships ahead. If Charlie realises his ultimate ambition of selection for Great Britain at the FEI Junior Championships next year, it will be a dream come true and a huge personal achievement.
