It addresses the growing demand for maleorientated parenting groups, and is specifically aimed at giving fathers and their pre-school children the opportunity to have some fun and spend quality time together.

‘Who Let the Dads Out?’ is a growing Church initiative that aims to strengthen families and support the wider community by reaching out to fathers, father figures and children, primarily through Saturday parent and toddler sessions. It began in 2003 at Hoole Baptist Church in Chester and there are now over 140 churches, across all denominations, with ‘Who Let the Dads Out?’ groups supporting approximately 2800 dads and children every month.

A typical session will involve a relaxed welcome, lots of age-appropriate toys/crafts, juice and biscuits for the children, countless bacon rolls, great coffee, good conversations and men gathered around a table discussing the best strategy for making the most effective paper plane! Everyone leaves with full stomachs and happy memories.

Simon Fenn (Children, Youth & Families Missioner – Church of England) will be leading the project and said “as a new dad myself, I think this is a fantastic initiative that is much needed in the area. It’s an excellent way for the Church to engage with the wider community, provide dads with the space to build positive relationships with their children, socialise with other dads and give Mum some time off!”

The effect on fathers and children is significant, but it also impacts positively on the wider family. The sessions encourage dads to engage in parenting their children and consequently engage better with their partners in the role of parents.

The new group at St Peter’s will run every fourth Saturday of the month, except in December and August, starting 26 September 9am – 11am. Admission is £2 per family. For further info, contact simon.fenn@norwich.anglican.org / 07585 801450

GOOD NEWS ON THE BUSES

Ann’s World-Famous Marmalade

marmalade, some of which is sold (with the help of assorted granddaughters) in aid of a Malawian Hospital Charity and some of which is used in our restaurant.

And now the Cromer Times can exclusively publish her secret recipe.

Over the course of the season we are lucky enough to receive several compliments for our food and accommodation, but the majority are for our absolutely wonderful marmalade, served up for breakfast and even finding its way into the odd dish on the à la carte.

The marmalade is handmade on site by Ann Graveling, who for 28 years cooked, cleaned and basically ran the Grove as well as cooking for, cleaning up after and basically running a family of five children and a husband at the same time. A marvellous effort! And now, in retirement, Ann creates the most fantastic

Kelling Probus Club

If you want to try some of Ann’s marmalade then either buy a jar from the entrance to number 97 Overstrand Road, or of course pop in and see us for dinner – 01263512412 to book!

Ingredients (to make approximately 10bls of marmalade) 2 ruby grapefruit 2 large oranges 2 large lemons 6 pints of water 6lb sugar

Cut and juice your fruit, and shred the skin. Add to a saucepan with the six pints of water.

Kelling Probus Club held its August lunch meeting at 'The Dales Hotel' Upper Sheringham on 20 August.

Twenty four members and two guests were present. After the usual tasty lunch, the club was given a talk by Tom Ponder on ' Reaching for the Top'. Tom teaches at Gresham School and is well known in local and national sporting circles, particularly for his abilities in Cricket,Table Tennis and Soccer.

His theme was that in any sport it is very important if you wish to get to the top to practice and practice for several hours each day.He quoted such examples as the Williams Sisters in tennis, Tiger Woods in golf, and the Youngs brothers in rugby, who are all reputed to have practiced and trained for 10,000 hours in their lives up to mid teens.

Agassi in tennis is rumored to have hit one million balls in one year in practice.

Physicality is the other factor to success, and gym training is so important to all the top sportsmen. He reminisced about meeting top sportsmen 30 years ago when a cigarette was as important as training. He then covered the ability to react in sport and suggested that this was important in conditioning the players to react quickly.and far more speedily than they did in normal life. Tom stressed that in young players their dedication sport should be self motivated and not pushed by parents.

After questions Mike Clayton thanked Tom for his excellent talk. The Club’s next meeting is on 17 September when the speaker will be Christian Heycock, talking about being an Army Chaplain in Afghanistan.

We always welcome new members and guests - please contact John Whittington on 01263 82033.

September is a great month to start something new. There are lots of opportunities to sing in Sheringham, including the Community Singing Group ‘Sing For Joy!’ run by Teresa Verney.

Teresa opens her doors to singers and so called ‘non singers’, people who have never sung in a group and those who can’t read music. The emphasis is on having fun, making friends, and laughing whilst learning songs from all over the world. There is no pressure of performance as this only happens once a year and is a very relaxed affair.

The group that meets on Tuesdays evenings at the Quaker Meeting House on Cremer Street has spaces for new people. So why not come and have a go. Contact Teresa 01263 479931 for a chat or email teresaverney1@gmail.com if you are not sure it is for you.

At long last the phone line has been repaired and no more calls are being lost.

The young cat on the car park in Aylsham has now been caught and is being held safe until she can be neutered. Her kitten was also trapped and has found a new home.

A recent article in ‘The Cat’ the magazine produced by Cats Protection for volunteers addressed a query on heart murmurs in cats and we know from experience how worried people are when advised their cat has one. The article went on to state that one study of heart murmurs showed that around a third of cats do have one, that the murmur can come and go, and if heard one day may not be apparent the next. It also may only be heard when a cat is particularly stressed. The indications are that about 50 per cent of healthy cats with a murmur will have no underlying disease; it may stem from another unrelated disease to the heart or may even be a completely insignificant “innocent murmur”.

Heart murmurs are graded according to their severity and, again, can vary from day to day. We often see kittens with a murmur when they have their first vaccination and find this has completely disappeared when they have the second. If we have a cat or kitten in care which has a murmur we are always guided by our vets as to whether any further investigations are needed. If you have a cat that has a murmur or are interested in reading more about it, Cats Protection does produce a small booklet titled “Heart murmurs and heart disease” which gives a little more information on this subject. We usually have a small stock of these available at our major events, so please do not hesitate to ask if you would like one.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Small friendly classes with attention to the individual dogs, Kennel Club good citizen puppy foundation certificates to all puppies achieving the required level. Bronze, Silver and Gold classes also available and tests when reaching the required level by an independent Kennel Club examiner.

All classes are held on Wednesday evenings including a Clicker/trick training class for a bit of fun & bonding with your dog, Suitable for dogs over 12 months.

Assistance and search dogs can start at 6 months. We also have Agility and Flyball at our venue near Fakenham for dogs with Bronze or above. 14

Will Your Will Work?

Written by Fiona Hewitt - Director and Head of Private Client Services at Hayes + Storr

The recent case of Ilott v Mitson gave rise to some sensationalist media coverage and comment “Where there’s a Will‌ the person who wrote it may not get their wayâ€? (the Guardian); and “ ‘Your Will can be ignored’ say Judgesâ€? (Daily Telegraph) are just two examples.

The facts of the case were briefly as follows: Melita Jackson died in 2004, leaving her estate of almost £500,000 to charities. Her only daughter, Heather Ilott, a 50 year old mother of 5, was disinherited. Mrs Ilott had fallen out with her mother when she eloped at the age of 17. At the time of her mother’s death she was living in a rented house, and was reliant on state benefits.

Mrs Ilott made a claim against her mother’s estate, and was initially awarded £50,000. She appealed against this in the High Court on the grounds that it was too little, but the original order was then overturned in favour of the charities. When she appealed again, the Court of Appeal decided that she should receive a payment from the estate, and in the end she was awarded around a third of the estate.

Despite the media fuss over this and other similar recent cases, claims by disinherited children are nothing new. Faced with such claims, the court must take into account a number of factors, including the financial resources and needs of the applicant and

beneficiaries, the deceased’s obligations and responsibilities to both the applicant and other beneficiaries, and any relevant disabilities. The conduct of the parties can also be taken into account.

Mrs Ilott and her family were in financial need. Mrs Jackson had no particular connection to the charities she chose to benefit, and the Judge decided that she had acted out of spite rather than because she wanted to support their work. As for conduct, Mrs Ilott had made some attempts at reconciliation with her mother which had been rejected, and it was felt that the main cause of the broken relationship was Mrs Jackson herself.

It remains to be seen how much influence this case will have over future decisions, and all cases of this sort depend on the individual facts. However, the decision to award such a significant sum to someone who was otherwise completely disinherited has caused some unease for both lawyers and their clients. It is not uncommon to want to exclude certain family members from benefitting from an estate. If you decide to do this and you think it may cause problems, it is advisable to take the following steps:

1. Have a professionally drafted Will in place, clearly and unambiguously setting out your intentions.

2. Make sure you tell your legal advisor all the facts and background so they can advise you properly on the risks and safeguards.

3. Leave a letter of wishes with your Will, explaining not only why you wish to exclude someone from the Will (or give them only a minimal gift), but also why you particularly wish to pass your estate to your chosen beneficiaries.

Sheringham Float wins Cromer Carnival Best in Parade Cup

Congratulations to the Dunstable Arms for not only winning their class in the Cromer Carnival Parade but also for taking the Best in Parade cup as well!

And congratulations to the Tug of War Team for winning the Inter-Carnival Mark Harris Memorial Shield for the second year running!

Sheringham Carnival Committee and volunteers also had a great time taking part

in the Cromer parade with the Viking Ship built for the Sheringham 2016 Viking Festival (13/14 February) and delighting the crowds with the glorious fish created by Brian Lewis for the Sheringham Carnival Primary School ‘Finding Nemo’ float. It was great to see many other Sheringham floats there as well!

Sheringham Lifeboat ‘The Oddfellows’ B 818

Service Launch – Sunday 23 August

At 14.06 hrs at the request of Humber Coastguard the Sheringham Lifeboat was launched to assist two single seater Kayaks being taken offshore by a strong easterly wind & increasing easterly swell.

On arrival on scene, midway between West Runton & Sheringham, one Kayak had managed to get ashore and the second Kayak having been in the water for over 30mins was finally making a successful surfing run to the beach.

Whilst the Lifeboat stood by the coastguard beach team met with both persons onshore and determined that they had suffered no injuries and no further assistance was required and the Lifeboat was stood down. Good service professionally undertaken with a good result.

Sheringham Society 2015 Art Exhibition

The Sheringham Society held its popular annual Art Exhibition from 14 to 24 August this year at the Masonic Hall in Sheringham.

The exhibition has been a regular event since the late 1970s and provides a great opportunity for local artists to display, and hopefully sell, some of their work.

The mayor, David Gooch, attended the Pre-view evening on 13 August and met some of the artists. Some 49 artists this year displayed their work, including Peter Longstaff from the Mouth and Foot Artists Association. Over 65 paintings were sold. The profit from the exhibition, together with a donation from the Sheringham Society, will go to East Anglia’s Quidenham hospice this year.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - ‘GLEANINGS FROM GERTRUDE JEKYLL’

At the next meeting of the Sheringham Horticultural Society, the speaker will be the Norfolk Garden Designer Shelagh Ashe. Her topic will be Gertrude Jekyll, the influential British horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer. Miss Jekyll created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom and the United States (including the ‘Pleasance’ in Overstrand.) She also wrote many books and over 1,000 articles for magazines such as Country Life.

She is best known for her herbaceous borders and the radiant colour in the gardens she created and the brush-like strokes of her plantings - it is suggested that these Impressionistic-style schemes may have been due to her deteriorating eyesight.

Gill Morris won the President’s Millennium Salver for the Best in Show by all the judges for her Handicraft needlework showing off the best of Norfolk, whic also won the Fearn Saunders Cup for best exhibit in the handicraft section for the second year in a row..

This should be a very interesting talk about a woman described as ‘a premier influence in garden design ‘and it is open to all. The talk will be held on Thursday, 17 September starting at 7.30 pm in the St Joseph’s Parish Centre, Cromer Road, Sheringham and is free to members with a £2 charge for visitors.

As a footnote, her younger brother the Reverend Walter Jekyll was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson and it is believed that the family name was borrowed for the famous novel ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.

NORTH NORFOLK JAZZ

The Norfolk Jazz Quartet played the first of four dates at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, on 16 August and will be playing again on Sundays 20 September, 18 October and 15 November from 1.30p.m. The event was well received with more than 150 people turning up to listen to the band play swinging jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book.

The dates were arranged as the result of the popular Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band events on the first Sunday of every month. The management decided to pursue the jazz theme but wanted to provide something different. The quartet’s dates are in addition to those of the Dixieland band and, if they continue to be successful, will carry on into the New Year. If the music of composers such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, George and Ira Gershwin and Antonio Carlos Jobim (to name a few) appeals to you then make sure that you check-out the Norfolk Jazz Quartet at The Goat. Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums). Admission to the jazz is always free and you can just drop in and have a drink but if you want a table for lunch it is best to book. Tel: 01692 538600.

Another North Norfolk venue that has become known for the quality of the music it presents is The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre. The programme continues on Sunday 20 September at 7.30 p.m. with the Simon Youngman Quintet. Simon is based in Norwich and is comfortable playing a range of jazz. His quintet specialises in playing work by composers of the 1960s and the repertoire will feature music by people such as Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton and Wes Montgomery. The line-up will be Simon (alto and soprano saxophones), Dave Ingham (tenor saxophone), Tom Harris (piano), Owen Morgan (bass) and Cath Evans (drums). Expect groove and swing. Tickets are £8.50 and can be obtained from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Dear Margaret,

I wish to thank three very kind and caring people who came to my aid after I had a terrible fall in Huntley Crescent in January this year, causing a severe injury to my hip. A young woman with her child came to my aid as I lay in the lane, a kind resident provided me with a pillow for my head and another gentleman kindly provided a quilt to cover me until the arrival of the ambulance. I am indebted to these three caring people - unfortunately I have no idea who they were but a huge thank you to them all and to the paramedic/ambulance staff who were really outstanding in their care and professionalism. Indeed my sincere thanks to everybody who has helped me since that day. It is only now in August that I have returned to my home and I am able to write and say a massive thank you through The Sheringham Independent. Yours sincerely, Dorothy Batchelor, Sheringham

The Bure Valley Railway continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary year with an event on 26th and 27th September 2015 which celebrates the heritage of steam in a small scale. Alongside our home fleet of 15” engines purpose built for line, we will have two visiting engines: “Northern Rock” from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and “No. 24” Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. Ingworth residents latest to benefit from Big Society Fund award

Local children and their families are now enjoying a new play area in Ingworth after North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) awarded £7,500 from its Big Society Fund.

The grant of £7,500 towards a total project cost of £16,500 has enabled Ingworth Parish Council to buy a new swing and climbing tower.

NNDC’s Big Society Fund Panel recognised Ingworth Parish Council’s strong desire to improve the play facilities for the local community and in support of the work it had already undertaken to secure funding for the project, was happy to make an award. Ingworth Parish Council has also secured funding from Awards for All England.

Cabinet Member, Cllr. Sue Arnold, at a recent event to unveil the equipment, said “Ingworth Parish Council has demonstrated a strong will to support its local community so I am delighted that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund has been able to play a part in improving such an important facility.

“Play parks are a great place for local children to enjoy and a valuable community meeting point for parents and carers. I would like to particularly like to thank Ann Marie, Gill, other members of the Parish Council and all those involved in this project. Their hard work, commitment and dedication to improve play facilities are commended. I’m sure the new play equipment will be popular and well used.”

North Norfolk District Council set up the Big Society Fund in 2012 to help support, benefit and strengthen communities across North Norfolk. In the last three years, the Fund has awarded grants in excess of £1 million for over 120 community projects that are meeting local need and make a real difference to communities in North Norfolk.

How to lose Mummy Tummy… quickly!

Many women struggle to lose mummy tummy. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles. Hormonal changes cause the body to store fat and fluid. Whilst a lot of these changes get better with time, many mums struggle to get back to their pre-baby shape.

Combine this with an increasing workload, childcare, work and family pressures-unless you have a lot of help it is difficult to find time to devote to long hours of exercise and calorie counting. To top this- if you do manage to lose weight you find fat disappear from areas you don’t want such as your face or bust but those resistant fatty deposits in abdomen respond poorly if at all!

#

'

!

(

If you are gradually getting back into shape and happy with the progress you are making then it is great. Continue with the good work. If on the other hand you are struggling then we have many solutions to address your specific concern.

One of the best modern solutions is laser liposculpture, literally sculpting your new body shape with the laser. If you have excess skin we can help you with a mini-tummy-tuck. This is a good option if you also desire a scar revision. The advantage of this option over a traditional tummy tuck is that recovery is quick and you don’t have a long scar. If you have stretch marks and loose skin this can be tightened by our non-surgical treatments.

What about fat dissolving injections?

These can be an option for small areas of fat but we do not think these are a good option for larger areas. There is a lot of controversy about their use and when you consider total cost of the injections to achieve mild results at best- we advise to avoid these and go for the laser liposuction which is far superior, minimally invasive and provides wow results at comparable cost.

It is very important to stress that we like to wait at least a year after childbirth before we consider any surgical options.

If you also happen to have a caesarean scar it often tethers down the skin and results in a small bulge of overhanging fat above.

FREE COMMUNITY EVENT

Greenbuild is a fantastic event for those who want to find out how to lead a greener lifestyle. Talks and advice from exhibitors and volunteers will cover everything from growing your own food, advice on heat pumps and biomass boilers to retro-fitting houses for energy and carbon savings.

NNDC’s Planning, Environmental Protection, Waste and Recycling, Civil Contingencies, Environmental Services, Economic Growth and Sports Clubs and Hubs teams will also be ready to chat with visitors and answer questions.

Greenbuild offers something for the whole family. There will be plenty going on to keep children entertained, including theatre shows, face painting, a free children’s quiz with fantastic prizes and a chance to make wildlife homes with NNDC’s Countryside team. There will also be plenty of food stalls to visit, all offering excellent local food and fresh, delicious homemade and organic produce.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “Greenbuild has become a key event in the North Norfolk diary and I’m delighted that the National Trust will again play host to this fantastic free event in the beautiful grounds of Felbrigg Hall.

Norfolk Managers Boost their Skills

Two managers from Crayford and Abbs in Norfolk have successfully completed a Leadership and Management Programme. Kevin Abbs, Director of Crayford and Abbs, commissioned the programme with Callander Associates at the beginning of this year.

Rupert Fox (Sales Manager) and Mark Wright (After Sales Manager) have worked with Simon Arthur of Callander Associates on the programme.

“Mark and Rupert were able to combine their specialist knowledge with a variety of management tools and feedback and have taken their day to day work to another level. Their aim, and mine, is to make customers very happy. Happy customers come back and they tell others” said Simon.

The programme provides practical skills and tools which can be used immediately with customers, staff and colleagues.

Eco-Driving Challenge

The Challenge is on at Crayford & Abbs - be the most economical driver of a Nissan Leaf and win £250.

The Nissan Leaf Challenge is already happening at Crayford & Abbs and ends on the weekend of September 5th-6th, linked with North Norfolk District Council's Greenbui!d, the region's biggest green lifestyle event, at Felbrigg Hall.

The Leaf having a real world range of 80 to 90 miles, depending on driving style, is often assumed to be impractical and lacking from infrastructure so Crayford and Abbs have developed this challenge to dispel some of these fears!

The idea of the challenge is to drive at normal speeds whilst maximising opportunities to re-generate the battery charge and increase the maximum range. The challenge takes about an hour and a half and the course takes in , Weybourne, Wells and Fakenham, arriving back at Bodham.

Mark Wright, Rupert Fox, Simon Arthur and Kevin Abbs.

Kevin Abbs has seen immediate and ongoing results from the programme: “We have been very pleased to be associated with Callander Associates and in particular working with Simon Arthur. The confidence this course has given both Rupert and Mark has been immeasurable and is reflected by the overall team morale and the progress, we as a business, has made this year!”

“We have been so pleased with the training we have received from Callander Associates we are rolling out a CPD programme for the rest of the team to ensure we continue to invest in the future of both our team and as a business.”

Simon Arthur can be contacted by email: simon@simonjarthur.com

Director Kevin Abbs said, "The winner would be the driver who produced the best return and maximised regenerative charging. We want to encourage people to remember that the Nissan Leaf can be driven at the speed limit," he said. "We are just trying to promote green energy and the benefits of driving a Leaf. For the record, I started with a range of 98 miles and finished the 40.3-mile route with a range of 56 miles so I used an extra 1.7 miles of charge but many drivers have had a positive result, using less range than the route's distance."

One of those was Crayford's own Mark Wright, who started on 65 mile remaining charge – completes 40.4 miles and returns still showing 42 miles remaining!

"I think that is unbeatable," commented Kevin, "But there is only one way to find out - come and try the Challenge!"

Anyone interested in trying the Nissan Leaf Challenge should telephone Crayford and Abbs on O1263 588160, email kevin@ crayfordandabbs. co.uk, or visit the dealership in Gypsies Lane, Bodham.
