‘LIGHTS UP’
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
A locally star studded Variety Show extravaganza is coming to Sheringham Little Theatre for just one night only - and it is literally going to LIGHT UP the town. It’s all down to one man’s vision.
That man - Paul Starling - is like a big kid in a toy shop. Actually that’s his day job! But today he is like The Simon Cowell and Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber of Sheringham all rolled into one. ‘Sheringham lights up the town throughout the year with it’s fantastic series of events’ he said. ‘And we decided we wanted to give the Christmas Lights a wave of the magic wand and do something even more spectacular with them this year. At the big switching on ceremony we’re going to blow minds but hopefully not bulbs,’ he added with his trademark grin. ‘And this evening is going to raise the funds to do it!’

Residents reminded to complete Household Enquiry Form
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is reminding its residents to ensure they have completed the recently issued Household Enquiry Form.
Forms have been sent to all residents in north Norfolk, asking them to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of NNDC’s annual household enquiry canvass.
The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Reminders are now being issued to those who have yet to respond.
With the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place across the country in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the election takes place they will easily be able to take part.
Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer at North Norfolk District Council said “Although we’ve received a fantastic response from our residents with over 70% of households responding to the Household Enquiry Forms so far, there are still residents who have yet to do so. Changes can be made online at www.registerbyinternet.com/north-norfolk or confirm details are correct by Freephone to 0800 197 9871. You can even now confirm details via text message. Full details on how to do this can be found on the front of your form.”
Every household must provide the information requested on their Household Enquiry Form, even if the property is empty, is a second home, is a business premises, or is a property where no one is entitled to be registered. Failure to respond will result in further reminders being sent and potentially a personal visit to the property being carried out. Residents are encouraged to respond as soon as possible.

Older People’s Day 2015
J’s WEDDING CARS
Everyone here at Age Concern North Norfolk loves to celebrate age and see it only as a number.
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
We are supporting the up and coming Older People’s Day, as we do every year, with a special event. This year we hope to make it an extra special event as a tribute to our former Befriending Manager, Elva Gledhill, who very sadly and suddenly, passed away in July and who always befriended and helped anyone regardless of age.
It will be held at Sheringham Community Centre on 1 October between 1pm and 3.30pm. Local people are invited to come along to this FREE event where they can learn more about local services and social clubs. Those groups and organisations attending are Fit Together, Ben’s Workforce, North Norfolk Community Transport, The British Heart Foundation, the local Library and Police services and the Older People’s Forum. There will be information stands and talks from associations such as the Community Services on safeguarding issues, Dementia Friends on becoming a dementia friendly community and Be Ready for It Palliative Care Academy as well as from our own services including our Befriending Scheme (which is supported by the National Lottery) and our Day Centre. Our computer support group will also be on hand to offer advice about getting online and staying safe.
There will be plenty to enjoy with an exercise programme and Tai-Chi and we have live music on the day and always encourage people to get up and have a dance. There will also be hand massage and art workshops. Refreshments are provided including tea, cake and sandwiches; with fun being the operative word.
We would love to see you there on the day to help promote our aim of proving age is just a number and that Norfolk leads the way in uniting different generations. On the day, North Norfolk Stories will be on hand to record a stories from people who have memories of growing up, or working in the area, as part of their oral exhibition beginning in the New Year and we will also have our own Intergenerational Group, run in conjunction with the pupils of Gresham’s School in Holt, attending on the day. Excel2000 Course for Carers in North Norfolk
‘Care in the Community’ - there are still many gaps - those discharged from hospital and not able to care for themselves, or simply being isolated, lonely and lethargic, being reliant on family, neighbours and friends to provide their daily needs, have someone to talk to. Where does the carer receive training and support? There is a need to encourage safe physical activity, mobility and motivation, thereby improving quality of life for the carer and person being cared for.
The good news is that, following the two successful carers’ courses in North Norfolk, a third training course for carers is starting on 25 September at Kelling Hospital which is free to successful applicants thanks to being sponsored by the pro-active Kelling Hospital Appeal Trust, which understands the need for improving ‘Care in the Community’. This will relieve bedblocking whilst showing the carer how to improve lifestyle for themselves and the person for whom they are caring. The course is being tutored by the Charity Excel 2000 (Reg Charity No 1038307). The training will consist of 10 morning sessions and includes specialist speakers from statutory and third sector agencies and the President of the Charity, Bob Laventure, well known internationally for helping people to offset inactivity whilst encouraging a more active and enjoyable lifestyle. This programme is necessary at this austere time with so many cutbacks with the needs of carers being even greater than before whilst supporting local communities. Make the most of this opportunity!

A VERY WARM WELCOME IN SHERINGHAM - SUCH LOVELY PEOPLE
Having just spent an exhilarating week with a friend in her lovely home in Sheringham, my first visit to Norfolk, I thought I must convey my sincere best wishes to all the residents.
Everyone, wherever we went, was friendly, happy, smiling and always had the time to talk to us, whether it was the street cleaner, little antique shop, young lady check out operator in the supermarket, the lovely station master and his assistants, the bus drivers going out of their way to make sure you alighted the bus at the correct location, dog walkers telling you where you could get great views of the coast etc - the list is endless, plus a memorable evening with the Sheringham Shantymen. 10
We went on some gorgeous coastal walks, stunning views and so very, very clean - no rubbish about or dog mess!
I ‘take my hat off’ to you Sheringham - be very proud of yourselves. After only one week, I have made new friends (one actually lives just outside Sheringham - but I wanted to include him in my praise!) and I am very much looking forward to returning and enjoying more of your hospitality.
Thank you all for making me feel so welcome. Sincere best wishes to you all, Bridget

THOUGHTFUL EXPRESSIONS

Now in their eleventh year, The Retas are established as the summer event for the greeting card community and brings together the entire greeting card industry for an afternoon of celebration. The Retas recognise and celebrate not only the top independent and multiple greeting card retailers regionally and nationally, but also the new generation of retailers as well as employees of outstanding excellence. Gail said, “When the shop was nominated for The Retas this year, I put Kerry forward for Employee of the Year.â€? Dear Margaret,
The Chairman, Doug Hoy and committee of Different Strokes, support for younger stroke survivors, would like to thank the businesses/shops/public for their support towards our continued effort to enable stroke survivors to benefit from our weekly exercise programme of aqua-aerobics and gym sessions. This programme is supervised by Tonya Patten, a fully qualified fitness instructor in stroke rehabilitation. Tonya assesses the stroke survivor’s requirements and a personalised programme is drawn up for each survivor to follow. We hold testimony to remarkable results and have found that exercise is imperative in enhancing the daily life of a survivor. To help the support group achieve this we held the following events : • Sunday 2 August at the Carnival Charity Stall Day we opened our stall with tombola and games to play and raised the amount of £135. Thank you to everyone who supported our stall. • A collection on 12 August was held at Morrisons supermarket, Cromer branch. An amount of £216 was collected. The Chairman would like to take this opportunity to thank the management of Morrisons supermarket for their continued support and the public for giving so generously. • Last, but not least, our Treasurer Sandra Marston took the Three Peak sponsored challenge for our group and walked the five mile route around Beeston Hill (Bump), Incleborough Hill and Stone Hill raising an amount of £115. The Chairman, committee and members would like to take this opportunity to thank Sandra for her support Yours sincerely, Sue Bradshaw, Secretary, North Norfolk Different Strokes

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have more good news to report this time as Benji, the golden oldie mentioned last time, has now been reserved and will be in his new home by the time you read this. The tabby boy kitten featured in the photograph with the last article has also found a new home, which has left Fairy, the dear little black girl waiting for someone to offer her a home too.
Cats and kittens come into care for lots of reasons. Recently several have arrived because their owners are moving and are not allowed pets in their new home. It is not only distressing for cats but also for the people concerned. We also find it particularly sad when owners have to re-home their cats because they can no longer look after them. One such cat is Mange Tout, a lovely ginger boy who has always been an ‘indoor’ cat and, consequently, was rather overweight on arrival (over 8 kg). When any animal is overweight to this extent, it is important to lose the weight gradually to avoid damage to other organs. Although still not down to
his ideal weight, he has made remarkable progress since arriving and we believe Mange Tout would now benefit from finding a new home, initially as an indoor cat. He may always be happier without access to the outside world but, living in a house rather than a cat pen, would certainly give him more opportunity for exercise, which would help him reach his ideal weight. He will need, however, to continue having small portions of his special food, all carefully weighed, until this happens. Mange Tout has lost between 1 and 2 kg since he joined us, which is a remarkable achievement, bearing in mind he is confined

Patients can be referred for Physio appointments once the vet is satisfied with their diagnosis and treatment plan. Physio plans are then tailored to each individual case and may involve exercises at home with participation from the owners. Recovery times vary with each case; this will be discussed at the first 45 minute consultation. Appointments with Kathryn can be booked through our Sheringham or Cromer surgery; your pet must be under the care of a veterinary surgeon to be referred.

People from different lands Are moving to our shores, And we, the British people, Have opened up our doors. I feel for the children, Bewildered and afraid, I saw them on TV, For them all I have prayed. I wish I could be with them To lend a helping hand, But without my metal frame, It's difficult to stand. If immigrants came to my door, I would give them a meal, I guess the world is in turmoil, It all seems quite unreal.

A Doodle by the Seaside
If you were hardy enough to brave the strong northerly wind on Saturday, 5 September, and popped down to Cromer Pier then you would have been greeted by an unusual sight - a mass of colourful sticky notes, every colour of the rainbow, adorning the railings of the pier right along to the theatre end.
They were a record breaking attempt as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which this year was, aptly, the Guinness World Records. The library service across North Norfolk, sponsored by FALCON (Facilitating Arts and Literature for Children of Norfolk) challenged children to create doodles using ordinary sticky notes and how they rose to this challenge.
It was the brainchild of Community Librarians, Alan Leventhall, Jacquie Salter and Maria Pavledis and FALCON Vice-Chair Adam Faulconbridge. Adam, a professional illustrator, visited all eight North Norfolk libraries to deliver children’s workshops on different drawing styles, from Manga to Comic Book. Adam said ‘The aim of the workshops was to help children discover their own artistic talent and also to encourage them to see their local libraries in different ways as they were asked “what makes your library extra special?”
The eight North Norfolk libraries all contributed doodles to the finished piece along with some doodles from Stibbard Children’s Centre. A massive loom band was also made at Sheringham Library.
The sticky notes were joined to create a garland of colourful bunting. As Ms Pavledis pointed out ‘We wanted to bring the children’s work,

and each other, together at the one venue, uniting as one big community’. The garland decked the railings to make a wonderful decorative string. This was made all the more dramatic by the high winds, and waves crashing against the pier. The sound of several hundred little sticky notes flapping in the mild gale was quite spectacular.
Lots of people turned out, including local Councillors Hilary Cox and Tom Fitzpatrick, and lent a hand attaching the bunting as both they, and the doodles, got buffeted in the wind. Ms Salter said ‘I felt It made for a real sense of community spirit as many passers-by, holiday makers and locals stopped to take pictures and ask what the event was in aid of; bringing the libraries some much needed, positive, publicity. Many children along with their families have come, from as far away as Fakenham, just to see if they could spot their doodle.
Ms Cox thanked everybody for their effort and thought it was ‘Marvellous to see just what a great contribution our libraries make to our local community.’ Alan Leventhall added ‘The libraries do a lot more beyond the four walls of the library than some people realise.’
Stars of the Cromer Pier show helped celebrate the achievement by appearing in dazzling full costume before their 4pm matinee performance. The garland, when all joined together, circled the main body of the pier and was to the best of the organisers’ knowledge, a local record for the longest ever doodle.
We would like to pass on our sincere thanks to all those who helped out on the day, during the workshops and over the course of the summer to help make our ‘record’ attempt. Although tired by the end of the afternoon, everybody who was on Cromer Pier on Saturday afternoon will remember the fun, of a creative day out.
More photos of the day can be found at www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries or the official FALCON website www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk FALCON aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.

‘Fantastic time’ for all at Sheringham BeachLife
The BeachLife activity event for children and young people on Sheringham cliff top and beach last month was another outstanding success, which attracted well over 200 children and young people.
This was the fourth successive summer that BeachLife has taken place, and each year the event has built on the success of the previous years. It is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, as well as holidaymakers.
The activities each day included the ‘Beach Special’, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year was ‘High Fives’. A popular feature this year was the gunge tank, with the children nominating one of the leaders to get ‘gunged’ each day.
The mornings also included the ‘Going Deeper’ sessions where the children and young people split into age-groups to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.
The afternoons comprised a water challenge, which included making and sailing a boat and wet relay races, beach games, beach sculptures, a giant inflatable assault course and human table football, and the construction of a huge BeachLife logo on the beach using flints (pictured above). The week was rounded off with a family barbecue on the Friday, followed by the family tide fight. Evening activities for young people
included the return of the popular ‘egg parachute’ challenge, a quiz and chips night, town trail treasure hunt, and a ‘Sheropoly’ trail around the town, all of which were well attended.
One of the mums, Nicola Chiffins, whose son attended each day, said “Thanks to all involved for a fantastic time at beach Life. My son couldn’t wait to go each day! He is 5 years old and, on the last day, he said ‘Mummy... Do you know ... I know God and he is my friend!’ It was so lovely to hear! It was so well organised and a brilliant fun friendly team, Thanks to all the helpers and the time and effort you gave, It was really appreciated and we have put the dates on calendar for next year!”
Next year’s outreach will run from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2016. But Sheringham youngsters will not have to wait until next summer to continue the fun, as the team are already planning for a Light Party on Friday 30 October and another “BeachLife Extra” day on Friday 19 February.

London Mozart Players to perform at Cromer Parish Church On Saturday 28 November 2015 Cromer Parish Church will resound to the fine orchestral tones of the London Mozart Players (LMP).
Under the direction of Geoff Davidson they will be joining Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society to perform Norwich-based composer Richard Allain’s Vespers. This will be something of a coastal homecoming for this work which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus in 2011 to reflect the coastal heritage of Southend-onSea. Over the summer Mr Allain has re-worked and re-orchestrated this piece especially for this north Norfolk performance. The choir will be joined by a line-up of fine soloists including soprano Rosamund Walton, mezzo soprano Evie Anderson and tenor Oliver White.

Orchestras Live is committed to producing adventurous programmes that bring new and contemporary music alongside orchestral classics for audiences to hear and enjoy. We are especially pleased that pieces by two Norfolk-based composers, Jane Wells and Richard Allain, have been featured in this year’s concert series.”

Summer Notes from the Commons
The summer of 2015 has been summed up as rather cool and wetter than average and I think locally that is definitely the case.
It has certainly been reflected in the low numbers of certain butterflies and most dragonflies recorded, especially the second generation of butterflies. Some spring butterflies, however, seemed to have a slightly extended season with both Orange-tip and Green Hairstreak being recorded into the second week of June.
Following a spell of thundery weather coming up from the south a male Red-veined Darter dragonfly was spotted (6 June) resting on a path by regular Commons recorder, Mark Clements. Later in the same day a female darter turned up. These Dragonflies are continental species that seem to be turning up in the UK more frequently and may have on occasions also bred. For one night only (11 June) Cherry Farrow reported hearing the
Banded Demoiselle
‘churring’ of a Nightjar at 11pm. Up to a few years ago these nocturnal birds were more frequently seen and heard over the Commons. In fact in 2007 was one perched on the roof of my house! Work took me away for most of June but Mark continued recording and spotted a Broad-bordered Bee-hawk moth (15 June), Hobby (16 June) and Narrow-bordered Fivespot Burnet moth (21 June), however, an interesting discovery (22 June) was a Tortoise Shieldbug. This bug is predominantly a southern species although the Norfolk and Suffolk Brecks are also frequented. It is another insect that is advancing northwards in response to the shifts in climate conditions. Another Hobby was noted by Mark (29 June).
The start of July promised some warmer weather and again (2 July) a Hobby was spotted by Mark as were two Turtle Doves. Turtle Doves were a former breeding bird of the Commons but following national trends, where there has been a 95% population decline, these delightful birds have been ‘lost’. Grass Snakes have occurred on the Commons but are very
Privet Hawkmoth
elusive so to see two in a day (4 July) Mark was very lucky. Bee Orchids can also be elusive so the presence of these pretty flowers in the north-east corner marsh was a treat. The White Admiral made its first appearance on the edge of the central marsh. This butterfly is usually seen singly or at the most two together but was noted on a number of occasions throughout the Commons. A new arrival to the site was the Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner. This is the larvae of a micro-moth that has become a pest. It arrived in the UK from Europe in 2002 and was first discovered in Norfolk in 2004. The moth was first described in 1984 from Macedonia but the mines have since been found in preserved Horse Chestnut leaves in herbarium collections dating back to 1879. Its spread through Europe has been calculated at 60km per year facilitated by man through accidental transportation, either by road or rail. Although the trees are not killed they are less able to photosynthesize and therefore are less productive in producing ‘conkers’ and may be more susceptible to disease. By mid-July more dragonflies were on the wing with Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Keeled Skimmers and the beautiful metallic blue Banded Demoiselle males making an appearance. A small striking yellow and black soldier-fly, known as the Four-barred Major (most soldier-flies in recent years have been given military sounding English names) was noted (12 July) resting on foliage. A Heath Bumblebee was also noted by Nick Owens. The butterfly list for 2015 now reached 22 species with the emergence of the Purple Hairstreak (14 July). This small butterfly likes to fly around the tops of oak trees on sunny days – very rarely coming down to ground level. Also this day Mark found a Humming-bird Hawk-moth. The final resident butterfly species of the summer was noted (20 July). This was the White-letter Hairstreak, so-called because of the white ‘W’ mark on the underside of its wings. A moth-trap run overnight (25 July) produced over 30 species including the Large Elephant Hawk-moth and the Privet Hawk-moth. A brief visit of a Little Egret to the pond (28 July) was an unexpected sighting. At the end of the month, Whimbrel (a small relation of the Curlew) were noted passing over the Commons and a Ruddy Darter dragonfly was noted at the pond (31 July).
Mark found a Red Long-horn beetle, a predominantly East Anglian species (1 August) and two Roesel’s Bush-crickets were seen (2 August), both as the un-winged and the winged forms, the latter found by Mark. A Moorhen and chick were also seen on the pond and a Slow-worm was found basking in the marshes. Andy Clarke reported a sighting of a Lesser Diving Beetle from the small southern pond. A micro-moth, that often sits on the yellow flowers of Common Fleabane, known as the Dark Fleabane Neb, was present (5 August). This is considered a rare moth in Norfolk, occurring only in 10 of the 69 10km squares that cover the county. Two female Emerald Damselflies were seen (7 August) by Mark and were the first reports of this species since 1987.
Sheringham Independent 424 September 19th 2015 18
Tachina Grossa
A large bumblebee-sized black fly with a yellowish face, Tachina grossa, was noted (9 August). This is a parasitic fly, which lays its eggs in large moth caterpillars. When the fly larvae hatch they eat their host but only non-vital parts, thus allowing the caterpillar to pupate. After pupation the fly larvae continues to eat its host and then pupates itself emerging from the host’s pupal case the following year. Also seen was the Bee-wolf, a wasp that attacks Honey Bees and paralyses them before flying off with the bodies to place them in a nesting burrow. These burrows can be up to 1 metre in length with 3 to 34 short lateral burrows at the end, each terminating in a cell. A male Emerald Damselfly was also present at the small southern pond. The Emerald Damselflies bring the total number of damselfly and dragonfly species recorded this year to 17. Two long-horn beetles were noted on the Angelica flowers (22 August), the Golden-bloomed Grey and the Fairy-ring
Four-barred Major
Long-horns. A Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Warbler were seen by Mark plus a third long-horn, the Spotted Long-horn beetle. The warblers represented the start of the autumn migration with many birds spotted along the coast. Another migrant, a Whinchat was also reported (24 August) by Mark. A pair of Crossbills flying over was an unexpected sighting made by Mark (25 August) with further observations of Lesser Whitethroats, Blackcap, Common Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff for the next few days. Mark also had a brief view of a Spotted Flycatcher (29 August).
Parts of the Commons are being cut as part of the fen restoration programme and this will be ongoing to around mid-September, by which time we shall be heading into the Autumn – will it be wet and windy or an ‘Indian summer’?

Wanderlust at the Cley Marshes
A lady with twinkling eyes tells of her heroic journey of survival, an adventurer is lost on Ben Nevis battling against the snow and a man in a wicker chair remembers his dancing days with fondness.
Norfolk Wildlife Trust in conjunction with The Gramophones Theatre Company bring you a national tour of Wanderlust. Three women search Norfolk for local stories of adventure.
Hidden in the deepest, darkest depths of rural England, in the dusty corners of libraries are people with a burning secret. A story to tell... if only someone would ask...
Armed each with a dictaphone and a pair of wellington boots, three women began a search to satisfy their lust for adventure. Hunting in forgotten parts of Norfolk they made it their mission to bring back the most exciting tales.
Wanderlust brings together a touching assortment of remarkable stories collected from people all over the county.
Wanderlust weaves stories together using humour, verbatim and beautiful live music to take the audience on an uplifting journey. This theatre will take place in the new Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre, NWT Cley Marshes Visitor Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 8 October 2015. Tickets are ÂŁ12 Booking is essential as places are limited: call 01263 740008.
Enjoy a pre-theatre supper with stunning views across the marsh. Call for bookings and menu. A bar will be available from 6pm.
We hope you will tell your members about this uplifting and humorous theatre and we look forward to seeing you there!

Ian Semmons did not come to talk to Holt and District Probus Club about how he hit the National headlines last year when he was admitted to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and kept in a ‘cupboard’ for 9 hours before he was found a bed in a ward. That is another story!
What he did talk about was ‘Action on Pain’ a charity that he founded in 1998 to help people suffering from chronic pain. Although the NHS is creating more pain clinics than formerly, there can be a wait of several weeks after referral to get to an appointment and meantime the patient suffers.
Action on Pain offers advice, both on a dedicated telephone line and in booklets, lobbies government and health authorities for better NHS pain management services, takes a mobile unit to shows throughout the country etc. 22
DISADVANTAGES OF WINE IS THAT IT MAKES A MAN MISTAKE WORDS FOR THOUGHTS. SAMUEL JOHNSON
(there could be others!)
Ian told members that he was severely injured ‘having a go’ at stopping a robbery over 20 years ago. He had several operations, was in hospital for 9 months and in a rehabilitation centre for 12 months He knows a lot about chronic pain. His own experiences in managing his own pain led to the formation of Action on Pain.
John Evans thanked Ian on behalf of the members.
Ian Semmons Holt and District Probus Club meets at The Feathers, Holt, on the first Thursday in every month and enquiries about membership (or a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Eric Dear on 01263 823207. Sheringham Independent 424 September 19th 2015

The AGM of Christmas in Sheringham will be held at St Andrews Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham on 5 June at 7.30pm.
CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB Moving house, for most people, is one of the most traumatic experiences in life - and that is just moving one's belongings. Moving the house itself is almost in the realm of fantasy, but as Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club heard at its September lunch meeting, it can and has been done.
We heard the extraordinary story of May Savidge, as told and illustrated by her niece-in-law, Christine Adams. May owned and lived in part of a mediaeval house in Ware, Herts, when a decision was taken in the 1960s to demolish the house to make way for a roundabout. The redoubtable Miss Savidge would not let this piece of history be destroyed and after purchasing the rest of the house took the entire building apart. Every beam, floorboard and tile was carefully labelled and transported to Wells-next-the-Sea where
she had bought a building plot, and for the next twenty-three years following her retirement, she struggled daily with very little help to rebuild her piece of English history.
During her life she had thrown nothing away and after her death the caravan in which she had lived in dreadful conditions whilst rebuilding her house, was packed with a record of her life - every letter, card, invoice and shopping list carefully placed between the pages of the Radio Times on the appropriate day. Disused cereal boxes and washing-powder cartons had been used as filing systems.
In her will Miss Savidge left the house, not to the next generation, but to Christine Adams' children on condition that the re-building work and furnishing had to be completed first. We heard that this took a further eight exhausting years, is now complete, and Ware House, Wells is now run as a Bed and Breakfast.
Sheringham Independent 424 September 19th 2015
The full story has been published by Aurum Press and the contract for the film rights already signed.
Ian Urquart gave a vote of thanks to Christine Adams for an enthralling talk about an amazing, inspirational, stoical and perhaps eccentric Miss Savidge.
Our next lunch meeting at the Links Hotel, West Runton is on 6 October when the speaker will be David Balfour on 'Flying for Life', and an informal coffee meeting is planned for 10 November at The Hole-in-One, West Runton.
If you are retired or nearly retired and would like to meet a very friendly group of men for lunch and to hear our next speaker please contact our Lunch Secretary, Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website,

Aldborough
A North Norfolk Postmaster has come to the rescue of a village about to be left without a shop.
The village of Aldborough has a population of more than 600 people, many of them elderly, who are unable to reach other shops and services because they have no car. The shop also serves many surrounding villages including Thurgarton, Hanworth and Calthorpe.
Aldborough has already seen the closure of a butcher’s shop in recent years and one of its two pubs last year. It still has a Post Office and a popular doctor’s surgery as well as a successful school.
But the Spar shop in Aldborough is closing on 26 September this year leaving the village, designated a service village in North Norfolk District Council’s structure

plan, without a shop.
Peter Davison, 66, with the help of his daughterin-law Margaret Adams, 42, is stepping into the breach by making interim alterations to the Post Office to offer a basic service from 29 September. He said ‘I would hate to see the village without a shop. There are many residents that depend upon it for their basic needs. I was looking forward to retiring but I do feel that something should be done. I will start off providing simple needs such as bread, milk, eggs, tea, coffee and newspapers. We will not be a Tesco. I hope we can source much of our food locally, so we will be a local shop in every sense of the word. I will be talking to some local farmers to see whether we can take their meat, local bakers and other food suppliers,’ he said. ‘We will also try and keep convenient hours – from 8.30am to 6pm.’
Mr Davison’s family have lived and traded in the village for the last 100 years. His grandfa-
Peter Davison and daughter-in-law Margaret Adams are getting ready to welcome new customers to the Post Office in Aldborough
ther was a cobbler and bootmaker in 1914 and the family has had the Post Office for 53 years. Peter Davison has been postmaster since 1994 and he is now assisted by his daughter-in-law, Margaret.
Other members of his family and grandchildren live in the village and attend Aldborough school.

eastlaw shortlisted for prestigious award
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) award-winning legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the Law Society Excellence Awards 2015.
The Law Society has received a great calibre of applications for the Awards and nine exceptional legal teams have been whittled down as the finalists in the ‘Excellence in Business Development’ category.
The business environment and client expectations are constantly evolving. Law firms are finding new and innovative ways to secure new business and deliver legal services. The judges will be looking for examples of business development initiatives that challenge convention and create greater added value.
The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in generating income for the Council.
eastlaw’s innovative and agile approach has not only secured its position as a value for money, specialist legal service which is efficient, effective and highly regarded, it has been recognised nationally with a number of prestigious awards.
Cllr. Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal Services, said “Being shortlisted for yet another award is a tremendous achievement. eastlaw's excellent service to the Council and to other public sector partners was recognised by three awards last year and being a finalist for this important award in 2015 is a much-deserved further recognition of eastlaw's vital contribution to NNDC's work. We wish them the best of luck for the finals. The winners of the award will be announced on 22 October.
