AUTUMN EQUINOX

Summer has swum by with a very wet August and September and the Autumn Equinox has just past so the nights will draw in and the days shorten. We are still seeing a lot of wildlife in our gardens such as the resident butterflies including the Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone. Bumblebees are still taking nectar from the last spoils of the Lavender and Sedums. With the beginning of October we will see our pink footed geese from the Arctic flying in pulling their winter blanket over all of us. Alongside seasonal changes in our wildlife our gardens are also altering like the summer annuals ending and the fruit and vegetables coming to a close bringing us our classic harvest festivals. With other plants coming to life like the vibrant reds in the Virginia Creepers and the wonderful low Autumn sun sparkling the Miscanthus grasses. As a gardener it is one of our busiest times of the year, leafs to sweep, shrubs to prune back and constant dead heading to keep new buds growing for as long as possible. Autumn also is ideal for hedge cutting. Leylandii can have its final cut before the spring and Beech, Privet and Yew also benefit from Autumn pruning. Gardens are very cyclic as one season draws to a close its time to start preparing for the next, bulb planting for spring and lawn care for next summer or a general redesign. B R Gardening Services previously named Barry and Robs Gardening Services continues to offer a personalised, professional and friendly service as we look forward to gardening for our wildlife over the forthcoming seasons.

Sheringham Lifeboat Relief Lifeboat Boat ‘Martin Harvey’ B 835 Service Launch –Monday 28 September

At approximately 19.50hrs a respected local fisherman reported hearing someone trying to re-start an outboard engine at sea without success. He listened for some time and eventually reported his concern to lifeboat personnel who informed HM Coastguard.

After some deliberation between RNLI & Coastguard it was decided to launch the Lifeboat and a coastguard shore team to investigate.

The lifeboat was searching the area from Beeston Hill to West Runton when the coastguard at East Runton reported finding a small inflatable dinghy coming ashore.

The coast coastguard then established that this was the same dinghy that had engine trouble all the way from Sheringham to East Runton. Some good work by the coastguard team cleared the mystery.

Chocolate Fondant

Autumn is sometimes seen as a slightly depressing season as the nights get longer and the days become shorter, but we absolutely love it here at the Grove. We always look forward to launching our Autumn Menu an emphasis on delicious garden produce, succulent game and meats from Cromer's very own master butcher Icarus Hines - and of course this is the perfect period for the odd indulgent dessert here and there.

This lovely chocolate fondant makes a guest appearance on various party menus throughout the year, and it's a rewarding and fairly

straightforward dish to make at home. So treat yourself with a little bit of chocolate magic in front of your roaring fire - and don't forget to come and see us for the Autumn Menu from 12th October!

Jazz at The Hub

Ray Simmons and Ron Hockett have spanned musical genres. Ray was principal trumpet with the Royal Philharmonic for nearly 20 years and Ron was lead saxophonist and clarinet soloist with the “Presidents Own” U.S. Marine Band in Washington for nearly 30 years. They have both played with some of the greatest names in jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Bobby Hackett, Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland. The trio playing with Ray and Ron will be Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) and Brian McAllister (drums). They are highly accomplished in their field and regularly accompany top British and international artists. We are fortunate to have jazz musicians of this quality living and playing in the region and on 25 October you have the opportunity of seeing and hearing them at The Hub (Sheringham Little Theatre) which, for this performance, moves into the auditorium. The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £10 and are available from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Dear Margaret,

May we through your magazine thank all those who made the Macmillan Coffee Morning at Southrepps Church such a wonderful success. In two hours we raised ÂŁ603.65. Thank you, Mandy Hayward , Hazel Patrickson

Dear Margaret,

I would like to thank the caring couple that pulled into Pretty Corner car park next to me on Friday 4 September. I had stopped to read my papers but when I went to go, my engine was dead. I had a two mile walk ahead of me, and my window was half open. My phone was useless so the gentleman used his and got onto my breakdown service who said they would be an hour, which they were. This kind couple even came back an hour later to check that I was OK. They may not read this as I believe they were on holiday but I felt I would like to express my appreciation in the hope they are still local. Yours sincerely, Eve Large

Cromer, Sheringham and District Inner Wheel Club The first meeting after our summer break was led by our President Carol Selwyn.

After an enjoyable meal the speaker was Nikki Morris the Deputy CEO of the Big C Norwich, our chosen charity for the coming year.

Nikki was a very informative speaker and told us of many changes since the Big C was formed 35 years ago, starting with connections to the N & N Hospital and the number of centres that have been established throughout Norfolk. Then the exciting news that the following day 4 September a new group had been formed to meet at Cromer Hospital. Much work had gone into this new centre and it will save many people having to travel the N & N Hospital. Cromer, Sheringham and District Inner Wheel Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Virginia Court Hotel at 6pm for 6.30pm. For further information please contact, Carol Selwyn on 01263 513717 or email carol.selwyn@lineone.net Please note that our meeting in October will be at lunchtime – 12 noon for 12.30 p.m.

North Norfolk Speakers Club

FREE

President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, Stuart Richards, recently visited a Speakers Club in Asheville, North Carolina.

Both clubs are affiliated to Toastmasters President of North Norfolk Speakers Club Stuart International, which Richards (left) visits Speakers Club has 14,650 clubs in North Carolina worldwide and since 1925 has been helping people from all walks of life to gain confidence in speaking and develop skills in communication and leadership.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’, said Stuart. ‘Dress code was very casual, but even so it can be daunting visiting another club, especially wearing shorts! I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the hospitality I received and as members of Toastmasters there was common ground and shared experience. It was like visiting an extended family. I had a lot of fun, learned more about improvised speaking and left with new ideas to bring back to my own club.’

To develop speaking, communication and leadership skills, whether at work or socially, join us at North Norfolk Speakers Club. Meetings are on alternate Wednesdays at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue. For more information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk , email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or tel. Fitting tribute for John Wright Mob: 07900 252168

With the recent passing of John Wright of Sheringham, his family wanted to make a fitting tribute in his memory.

They were very grateful to receive generous donations at John's funeral, which were divided between North Norfolk Railway and Lloyd Court Housing with Care in High Kelling, where John and Anita moved to last year.

In memory of John, an original North Norfolk Railway bench now resides on platform 1 at Holt Railway station, where the family can sit and see both Lloyd Court and his daughter Sarah's home.

As well as this, the family has also recently presented to Lloyd Court a wonderful photo of a train under full steam heading along the Poppy Line. This photo taken by his son Steve who is a

Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig – Cromer Pier Pavilion Friday 6 November During 2015 the Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th anniversary, having started in 1990. This year, as well as the other forty odd gigs in their programme they also planned to do three very special gigs, two in Sheringham and the last one at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6 November. Musical Director Brian Farrow said This will be our final celebratory gig of 2015 and we are really looking forward to it. To make it really special we have asked Keith Skipper if he will join us for the show. We have always admired Keith’s work and he will bring his own unique taste of Norfolk to this show, which we have called ‘The Silver Darlings’. They are still planning the show details but Secretary Dick Grieve added, “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled over the last twenty five years and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians and I know Keith will add his own splendid blend of humour” The Shantymen are keen to demonstrate their thanks to the people of Norfolk who have supported them over the last twenty five years and have come up with a novel way to show that. Chairman Bob Hawkins said ‘We have decided to give all of the profits from the Pier show to four local charities, one of which is the RNLI with whom the Shantymen have always been closely linked. The

other three, which must be Registered Norfolk Charities, will be picked at random on the night of the concert from those who have expressed a written interest. So to be in with a chance, we are asking everyone to complete the form on our web site and send it to our secretary. He continued ‘This is your chance to be one of the Four Charity Beneficiaries from the Silver Darlings Concert on Friday 6 November at The Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier’. They also plan to make another CD late this year or early next which will feature their favourite and most popular songs. Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “The Shantymen are going to make a list of their twenty four favourite songs and will then choose the most popular ones for the CD. However we thought the public might wish to have an input into what’s on the new CD so we are inviting them to let us know their favourite songs which we have recorded.” You will find a list of all of the songs they have recorded in the discography section of their web site www.shantymen.com and the Shantymen have said that if you have any favourites please let them know. In summing up, Musical Director Brian Farrow said ‘This has been a wonderful year for us and this will be a very special show. But I would like to add some very specific thanks to all of the guys, some still with us, many who have left, but to all who travelled this

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to report that Fairy, the little black kitten, is now in her new home. She did however give her new family some worries when she disappeared shortly after arriving and, because they could not find her, they thought that she had managed to get out. After asking neighbours to search for her, this mischievous little kitten was discovered hiding behind the appliances in the kitchen. Needless to say there was a very relieved family with a kitten receiving lots of cuddles.

Before offering a home to a cat or kitten there are several things you should consider, avoiding heartache at a later date. Cats live much longer nowadays and it is not unusual to have a cat still fit and well in its late teens or even, like my cat, into their twenties. If not in the first flush of youth ourselves perhaps it would be better to offer a home to an older cat rather than a kitten. You will have the benefit of knowing the cat’s temperament and are also less likely to be tripped up by a very active youngster. If you are in rented accommodation you need to make sure your landlord will allow pets, and if so how many. Another thing to consider is the length of your tenancy. So many cats are handed into care because their owners have had very short tenancies and find, when they move; the new landlord is not so amenable and will not allow pets. Another consideration, if taking

short term lets, is the disruption to a cat each time you move which can cause behavioural problems. The final point to consider is the cost; not only how much will need for food Pickles, whose owners and cat litter but also how moved and were not you will pay for any veteriallowed to have any nary treatment. Although pet insurance will cover accident pets in their new home and illness you will still need to budget for neutering, vaccinations and flea and worm treatments. If everyone considered these points there would be considerably less cats and kittens out there needing our help.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. You can visit ww.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Members of Animal Magic Dog Club took part in their ‘Feed a Norfolk Stray Month’ which saw the club and its members donate over 200 kilos of dog food to local homeless dogs. The food was donated to Norfolk Strays, a local organisation dedicated to saving dogs who find themselves in the dog pound. Without them, after seven days, dogs remaining unclaimed would sadly be put to sleep. Over the past eighteen months they have saved over 200 dogs, who are now happily living in new homes and Animal Magic are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause.

Norfolk Strays is ran by a small team of dedicated volunteers. To find out more about their work or to make a donation please contact norfolkstraydogs@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page Norfolk Strays needing urgent rescue spaces.

Pictured with just a small amount of the donated food is Tash Rust from Norfolk Strays with Tia who is licking her lips in the hope that all this food is for her, with Fiona Leadbetter from Animal Magic Dog Club.

North Norfolk Photographic Society That talented doctor from Aylsham visited North Norfolk Photographic Society again on 16 September. Kevin Elsby showed photographs that he took when he and his wife visited Peru. He went, of course, to pursue his passion for natural history in general and birds in particular, and only incidentally as a special trip to celebrate a special wedding anniversary.

Kevin showed pictures of vultures, parrots and hummingbirds to name only a few families of birds, and spider monkeys and fungi among many other kinds of fauna and flora. His complicated itinerary included a trip up a tributary of the Amazon by canoe through extraordinary scenery The climax, perhaps, was a bit of a surprise. Clearly feeling that members might be saturated with wildlife photographs, Dr Elsby presented a series of breath-taking views of Machu Picchu, the amazing World Heritage site which Kevin and his wife included on their tour. It is quite easily reached by railway these days, though that is followed by a very energetic walk up the mountain. The sight of the railway far, far below the old city gave a vivid illustration of the labour it must have been to construct the buildings, bringing the stone to do so from many miles away and many metres below. Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society soon as this very funny play is over then it is all stations go, to face Martin’s biggest challenge yet as he'll be directing Calamity Jane, CSODS 2016 musical. Martin says "being part of CSODS is like having an extended family, and a joyful experience to be part of a highly acclaimed group representing Cromer and Sheringham and bringing musical theatre, comedy, and drama to the stages at Sheringham Little Theatre and Cromer Pier Pavilion.

At Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society rehearsals are in full swing for their next production, The Birds, The Bees and Therapy, a comedy play written by Jack Williams. This hilarious, fast-paced comedy is devised on a split-stage, half in the flat of Steve Kingsellar and half in the local Community Centre where he works as a group therapist.

After a rambunctious evening drowning his sorrows with the idea of forgetting about Emma, his married friend who he is in love with, he unfortunately meets Samantha! The play begins with Steve waking up with little memory of the night before, and he must get to work. His trouble-free life unravels at a rapid rate of knots, when the delusional Samantha reappears to declare her true feelings for him. Adding to the confusion his cantankerous flatulent father turns up, whilst Steve tries to fend off his flirty OAP neighbour. Throw in his group therapy patients who have various problems including anger, OCD, and an alcoholic, plus a lothario taxi driver. Everything comes to a head with his professional and personal life intertwining!

Auditions for ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ The hilarious stage show, The Vicar of Dibley, is coming to the Sheringham Little Theatre next February. This brilliantly funny production is already causing a lot of excitement among amateur actors and actresses in North Norfolk, as the auditions are open to anyone who thinks they have the acting skills to be one of the iconic characters in this show.

The only prerequisite is that you are a member of CSODS when you actually audition. Membership is £25 per annum and you can become a member at the read through, which is on Thursday 22 October at Cromer Junior School at 7.30pm. Audition details will also be given at the read through. Director Ruth Elliott said, ‘We are going to have so much fun -as well as a lot of hard work -with this production. The production team have already started work, and we are all really excited about putting on such a wonderful show.’

Steve Kingseller is being played by Cromer born Martin Rodwell whose first outing with CSODS was in Oliver as the Artful Dodger in 1981. With a break of 15 years he returned to join the Society for Camelot, as Daddy Warbucks in Annie, Guys and Dolls, as well as several roles at Sheringham Little Theatre. More recently Martin has taken on the challenge of directing, winning two NODA Eastern Region awards for best play, for How the Other Half Loves, and The Elephant Man. As

The award-winning Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, will be raising money for Comic Relief by putting on this production. Tickets are already available from Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347.

Sheringham 1940s Weekend Visitors came in droves to be part of this year’s 1940s weekend, organised by North Norfolk Railway.

There were many sights to see. There were many period shop fronts and displays on the High Street. Memorably, Roy Boy’s Cafe could be seen with a bomb sticking out of its roof, and a Nazi Messerschmitt fighter plane could be seen protruding in a similar manner at Blyth & Wright. Newspapers and other materials from the period were available to read in some displays and the Lobster was outfitted with a Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo! themed shopfront.

People from the past of all kinds could be seen strolling about Sheringham during the weekend - sailors, nurses, gangsters, and all kinds of soldiers and civilians. Several musician groups, such as the Sheringham Salvation Army Band and American Tan, could be heard throughout the town. 1940s vehicles could be seen everywhere - some commissioned to appear by North Norfolk Railway, others brought in by enthusiastic patrons of the event.

The weather was fantastic for both days and enabled the yearly spectacle of the Spitfire to fly over Sheringham safely and in plain sight. New this year, was North Norfolk Railway’s decision to expand the event and the share the weekend with Holt. This has proved to be successful because attendance was the best it has ever been for the event, with bed and breakfast establishments full to bursting and Sheringham High Street almost unrecognisable with bustle. The crowds stretched all the way to the seafront where spectators could hear the sounds of WWII gun placements, which fired every few hours.

Chief Organiser of the event, Chrissie Rayment of North Norfolk Railway, called it the most exciting 1940s event yet, and wishes to thank Graham Deans from the Lobster for organising the road closures, as well as everyone across the towns that got involved to make it such a memorable weekend.

The money from this raffle, plus a 1940s fundraising night on Saturday 19 September totalled £1700, with a further £100 donation and another £200 for another flight in the Tiger Moth that was purchased later in the evening! The money just kept rolling in!

Left to right: Peter Sanderson, main organiser; Donnie Sargant, pilot of the Tiger Moth who donated three flights as prizes; and Robin Allen, owner of Woodlands Caravan Park

Peter then presented a cheque for £2000 to Diane Evans and Elaine Twinn, representing North Norfolk Macmillan Cancer Support Group, who attended the 1940's night held at the Park. It was a lovely friendly fun evening. The owners of Woodlands Robin & Cherie Allen and all their staff worked so hard to make this event such a success. WEATHER SUMMARY and FORECAST FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS

The forecast for the past three months was going ok until early August, when a 'blocking high', settled to the east of us, halted or diverted unsettled conditions continuously across the British Isles, whilst most of Europe got prolonged summery conditions .

September has seen a slow return to more settled conditions and this should continue into October. However, it cannot be a given that high pressure will give us above average temperatures as seems to be a recent pattern - some of the time winds will come in from a colder quarter and give us quite a drop in temperature.

As we progress through to the end of the year, although there will be the usual trend to more unsettled weather, there seems to be little in the way of cold weather for us.

Two items of interest, and unknown influence, are the El Niño in the eastern Pacific, which in the past have increased stormy winter weather and, in 2010, an early and prolonged cold winter, so we won't know, with more certainty, until we are into the winter how things are going to pan out.

There is also a large area of cold water in the North Atlantic, which has been there for some time now. Ned Nimbus, Sepember 2015

Increase of Inheritance Tax allowance to £1 million where home inherited by descendants Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

“A family home is likely to remain the primary asset for many middle-income taxpayers. Fortunately there are new provisions in the Finance Bill 2015 that provide significant potential benefits to tax-payers leaving their home to descendants.” So says the Government’s preamble to the Finance Bill 2015. It must, of course, be passed by Parliament in order to become law.

The small print is far from straight-forward and this is not the universal panacea that it might first seem.

The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new section into the Inheritance Act 1984. It will provide an extra Nil Rate Band if the home passes to descendants. It will apply only to deaths after 6th April 2017.

The effect should eventually be to increase the Nil Rate Band for a home-owning married couple (or civil partners) to £1,000,000.

The relief will start to take effect in April 2017. It will be phased in, starting with an additional £100,000 in 2017, £125,000 in 2018, £150,000 in 2019 and then the final £175,000 in 2020. The ordinary Nil Rate Band of £325,000 will remain frozen until April 2021.

The home must pass to a direct descendant of the deceased, which includes step-children

but not unmarried partners who lived at the property with the deceased.

Any unused band will be transferable to a spouse or civil partner. There is tapered withdrawal of the new band for estates valued at more than £2,000,000.

To avoid those who sell their homes, to downsize or to move into care or to live with relatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposed that legislation will be included in the 2016 Finance Bill to extend this relief where the deceased downsized or ceased to own a residence on or after 8th July 2015. The provisions do not come into effect until 6 April 2017 and so it remains necessary to consider other options for effective succession tax-planning for the family home in the interim. As ever, it is important to take specialist qualified advice.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Kelling Probus Club held its September Meeting at 'The Dales Hotel' on 17 September. Twenty one members were present and enjoyed a pleasant lunch with the usual good fellowship. After lunch, our guest speaker was Christian Heycocks who is vicar of St Peters Church Sheringham.

Christian gave the club a potted history of his life, after which he concentrated his story on his time as Chaplain to the Royal Marines. He told us of his calling to be a military chaplain, and of his officer training, followed by his induction into the Royal Marines, with all the arduous training to gain his 'green beret', and later to do some training with Special Services. Christian had been a good sportsman in his youth, and this fitness helped him to pass this intense training, much of it done at Lympstone near Plymouth. He went on to tell us of his time in Iraq and Afghanistan, serving on the front line with his fellow marines, although not armed, marine chaplains are always up front with the men, not in reserve behind the lines. Christian then concentrated his talk on remembrance and post operations problems - it was often true, with modern transport, for a soldier to be in a war zone one day and three days later back home with family. He then talked through some of the problems of war injuries and stress which, with the benefits of modern casualty treatment, are not easy for the individual soldier to cope with. He ended his talk by remembering all those who served with him and those who did not return from the wars. Christian was thanked for his interesting and thought provoking talk.

NORTH WALSHAM’S CHIPPY IN TOP FOUR

The THREE COTTAGES FISH RESTAURANT received the news earlier this summer that in this year’s competition to find the best 50 Fish and Chip Shops in the United Kingdom theywere one of only four shops to receive a mark of 100% from the independent judges. Having been judged a top 50 shop last year, owners, Paula, David and Sam, are really proud that the extra effort put in by all the staff to ensure every customer receives great food and great service has led to this fantastic award. The annual competition, which is run by Fry Magazine, entails an unannounced secret visit by an independent judge who marks each shop on the quality of their food and the service received. Over 50 different aspects of the food and customer service are marked to help, compare shops throughout the UK. At the Three Cottages the aim has always been to try and serve “the best fish and chips in the world”. A mark of 100% for the quality of the food for the third year running reflects their efforts to achieve this. The owners told us “We are incredibly proud to have been judged one of the equal top four fish and chip shops in the country. The staff deserve special mention for their achievement in also attaining a mark of Sam Homfray, Kirstie Anderson, 100% for the service given to customers.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER HOPS IN FIELDS AND GARDENS

When we think of hops it is probably beer and hop fields that spring to mind but it is also an appealing and useful garden plant.

The traditional hop field, a forest of poles the height of three men, supporting a cat’s-cradle of wires, is an extraordinary scene with no parallels in English agriculture. It is hard to imagine the landscape in the main growing areas of Kent, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Worcestershire at the peak of hop growing in the 1870s, when nearly 72,000 acres were under cultivation.

The hop is a native wild plant of hedgerows and scrub but it was not until Flemish weavers settling in the weald of Kent in the 1520s introduced new varieties of hops together with cultivation and brewing techniques that hop growing developed. At the beginning of September the aromatic cones of the female plant are ripe for picking. Many hands were needed and it became traditional for families from London’s East End, gypsies, itinerant workers and local residents to spend

three to four weeks ‘hopping’ in Kent and Sussex. The hoppers were badly paid and provided with little in the way of shelter. Dermatitis sometimes results from harvesting hops and although few cases required medical treatment, an estimated 3% of the workers suffered some type of skin lesions on the face, hands and legs. Hops are also toxic to dogs!

At first hops were used because they prolonged the life of beer but their alpha acids also impart bitterness and their volatile oils give flavour and aroma. Each variety has unique qualities that give beers their range of tastes. By 2003 the acreage of hops in the UK had fallen to 3,600 acres on only 95 farms. Today hops are more likely to be seen in gardens with their highly coloured, golden or attractively variegated foliage trained over a fence or trellis or into a large shrub or small tree. The flowers/hops are useful for dried flower arrangements or you can consider brewing your own beer. Hop plants are hardy perennials and should be grown in the garden in moist but well drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade.

The basic variety is Humulus lupulus a rampant climber with oppositely held, green, lobed leaves on bristly stems. Rather coarse for the garden, but it may be of use in wilder areas for covering unattractive structures. The forms with coloured leaves are those most often seen, such as ‘Aurea’

which has fine golden foliage that is especially eye-catching in spring. Both male and female plants are in cultivation; the male is more commonly grown but the female is more desirable with its attractive flower heads in summer. Other varieties to look for include ‘Diva’, ‘Prima Donna’ and ‘Taff’s Variegated’.

To grow this plant sow seed at 15-18 degrees centigrade in spring, it is also possible to take cuttings. Hops are subject to Verticillium wilt. Hops are therefore well worth growing, for covering fences or trellises, for dried flower arranging and for brewing your own beer and if that is not enough hops are used in herbal medicine in a way similar to valerian, as a treatment for anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. A pillow filled with hops is a popular folk remedy for sleeplessness. It is believed that a hop pillow cured the insomnia suffered by King George III. Bob Wilkinson

Sheringham auctions itself on Sunday 11 October at The Lobster Gardens at 2.30pm.

The business people of Sheringham have rallied round Paul Starling‘s show LIGHTS UP and have offered to auction the whole town!

Well, the myriad of unique experiences that are available in the town, that is. Driving a tank, a plane trip along the coast, meals and bed & breakfast, art, food, wine, music, bakery bake offs. Never mind James Bond – when it comes to ‘nobody does it better’ well then that is Mr Sheringham, of whom nobody does it better! – or Lady Sheringham of course. No sexism in our beautiful town.

The familiar face of Rodge Smee has been helping Paul out by co-ordinating the massive amount of wonderful pledges - ‘I have been blown away by the generosity of the business people in this town’ said the postman. ‘They have really delivered! First class. They have

come out in parcel force for the event.’ And it is all raising money for new Christmas Lights for the town. Businesses have pledged big for a massive auction of Christmas goodies! Santa Roger Smee has come to town with a fleet of lorries with loads of goods, not a sled! If anything is special for you in the town – well you can buy it. The whole Sheringham Experience is up for grabs!

So get to the auction, get bidding and stock up now for some fabulous treats and pres-

ents you won’t be able to buy in the shop! With lots ranging from a Bake Off Masterclass from the genius behind Craft Bakery to a fantastic offer from North Norfolk Railway for their Thomas the Tank Engine event, to individual pledges on music lessons, framed art, a beach hut for the day, days out with meals and taxis included, seal trips, boat rides, sealing wax and string – Sheringham has all of your favourite things. It is a town with a big heart and it’s not just wearing it on a sleeve, it is putting it in a basket and gift wrapping it for you. Full details of all the generous gifts can be seen online on: www.facebook.com/ SheringhamChristmasLightsAuction

A list of all items to bid on, bid forms and bid boxes available at The Lobster Public House and Starlings.

Sheringham Lobsters success!

The Sheringham Lobsters netball team have been celebrating their summer league success with a third place finish.

After battling through the summer season with a few major injuries, they managed to secure a few good wins in the final stages of the league. They have continued this form with two comfortable wins in the winter tournaments.

The netball team have been playing together for over 20 years and include team members ranging in age from 16 – 50 years. They have recently received new sponsorship from Graham Deans at the Lobster pub, without which the team would not be able to afford new kit. Thank you Graham!

Borneo Trek

On 31 October, lifelong Norfolk resident Fred Corbett is embarking on a Malaysian expedition to raise money for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund and Classrooms in the Clouds.

Ellen was in her last year at Cromer High School when she died suddenly from an epileptic seizure. Since then her family and friends, led by her mum Lynn and dad John, have been raising money in her memory for Epilepsy Research UK.

Two years ago when Fred was trekking through the Himalayas, he was captivated by the quiet strength and warm hospitality of the Nepalese people. Classrooms in the Clouds is a small charity funding schooling in remote mountain areas, where some children walk for up to three hours to attend school. After the devastating earthquakes earlier this year, their work is even more vital.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Fred, a local cabinetmaker will be flying to the island of Borneo where he will be trekking through the rainforest, camping in local villages and staying in small lodges. He will also be visiting animal sanctuaries, including the renowned Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok. The climax of the trek will be climbing Mount Kilabalu at over 4,000 metres, South-East Asia's highest peak, then white water rafting the Kiulu river. In preparation for this challenge Fred, a hapkido black belt at Ellen's fathers Fighting Fit gym, has been regularly attending fitness classes and walking long distances on Norfolk foot paths, totalling over 150 miles so far. Fred is funding the entire trip himself, so all the money raised will be split equally between the two very worthwhile charities. In order to donate, please visit www.mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/fredcorbett1 or pop in to FFMA gym at Louden Road, Cromer.

The 1940s returned to the Links Golf Club with members dressing up for a special fun competition - our take on the ’40s weekend's being held on the North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham and Holt.

There were some great 1940s styles on show, along with some fantastic golf.

The players were only allowed to use three clubs and a putter and the winner was Chris Kime with an impressive 39 Stableford points. Although Chris wasn’t wearing full 1940s clothing he got into the spirit of the times with a Dad’s Army t-shirt.

Club Captain Tim McCrohon using a hickory putter with other members who got into the spirit of the ’40s.

In second place was Kevin Bonnett looking the part in plus fours and a waistcoat and in third was Talbot Field with 34 points.
